Reviews (page 8 of 11)
One of the first rap albums I heard as a kid. I appreciate the fun aspects, the boundary pushing and snoop’s flow. I get a little weary of the same key, tempo, etc. “murder was the case” was a highlight for me.
★★★½
Complete
I feel like this one holds up much better than most rap albums from the 90's. It sounds a little dated, but it still manages to sound cool 30 years later. I mean, I'll never listen to this album again as it's not for me, but it wasn't hard to get through. 3.4
Detta var bättre än jag förväntade mig.
Enjoyed the bass riffs throughout, and snoops lyrical style is very nice. Had to stop listening to the album though cause they were only singing about cocks and balls and being quite misogynist.
I have heard this album previous, and I think that it is pretty good. I'm not the biggest fan of Snoop but this is his classic that is pretty undeniable.
It’s good. I thought it was released recently, but it was an old one. Personally I didn't really enjoy the album. I can’t really point out what’s “wrong”.. could be lack of dynamic shift or harmonic movement.. could be the attitudes.. it’s like going into a nice well decorated hospital. I don’t hate hospitals, but the way the doctors and nurses look at me puts me off.
Look Snoop is a legend and Gin and Juice alone basically grants this album a 3 but I can’t fuck with some of these songs. I’ve listened before and I forgot how low-brow some of the content is, and early 90’s rap still has a lot of those corny rhymes to it. For its influence, for Gin and Juice, and for its production it’s a 3. Can’t go much higher on an album that’s mostly about a 19 year old describing his party lifestyle with little tact. High highs and low lows.
There were a lot more “frills” on here than I would expect from a snoop dogg album. For someone that’s so chill and raps about smoking all day, there was just too much extra stuff going on in the songs that I didn’t like too much. I’ve always loved snoops flow and when it’s just him rapping over a beat I was much more engaged. I’m very intrigued to listen to Easy Dick and the jack off hour on 187.4 FM
One of my favourite Snoop Dogg albums. I’m not a huge fan of all the Interlude like songs that are more talking than music but still a good album.
It was aight would listen again but not the hugest fan of this genre
Snoop is just a cool celebrity. The story telling is top end
surely a classic
What a trip to get a taste of the up-and-coming youthful Snoop. He's been such a TV personality known for his weed smoking and other extra-curriculars for so long that I almost forgot that at one point he was a very well respected rapper. I wasn't exposed to Doggystyle (beyond Gin and Juice many years later) or much of his early work so it was nice to sit and actually listen to this album in unison. I can see why its held in high regard. Snoop is smooth with his lyrics and has a nice flow that resonates really well with the background production. None of the songs jumped out at me as smash hits, but the whole composition was a pretty enjoyable ride that cruised by. I much prefer this style of hip hop rap (G-Funk I guess) to other contemporary gangsta rap sub genres even if none of it is really in my wheelhouse. I was too young to really be exposed or appreciate much of Snoop's musical heyday so to me he has always been kinda a clown that shows up on radio hits/remixes of pop songs or reality show bullshit. Snoop Dogg/Lion/Zilla is character no doubt, and I'm glad he at least has a sense of humor to take the piss out of himself or show up and lean into the ridiculousness. I'll always appreciate that about him. Props to him on Doggystyle which I've always heard is a great album and I'd agree belongs on the list. 3.01 stars
i'd say it's a solid 3.5 - some entertaining songs but just overall not for me
Funky as hell. Misogynistic as hell.
I'm not the audience here.
Doesn’t feel special
Snoop’s obviously got a great voice and flow, and the beats are funky as hell. The album has a clear identity and laid back feel that shines through. But the ganagsta-party-sex lyrics didnt grip me - I rarely find them insightful, clever, funny, or memorable. Things get repetitive…it feels like you can lift the vocals of any song and put it on a different song’s beat, and it would still work. The beats stay fresh though and hold my attention more than the rapping. I like the sound but it doesn’t sustain me for the full run length.
ok album none really stood out for me but that’s expected 🙏🏽
Slightly better than the other g-funk album we’ve had so far (the chronic) but still can be annoying and a bit repetitive. There are some really good standout tracks on here though, Murder was the case is a particular favourite.
I was pre cringe just thinking how badly this must’ve aged. Not bad actually. 3 great songs, amazing production. Lots of dumb skits made to be skipped on your CD player.
Что-то в этом есть, хоть я и не люблю рэп.
obviously an all time classic. never heard it all the way through. some songs dragged in classic 90s hip hop fashion. 3/5
I think I just have to admit to myself that I'm not as much of an early rap fan as I remember or would like. Love Snoop's voice. Love some of these songs (Gin and Juice of course, and Gz and Hustlas was a new surprise for me, same for Pump Pump), but the lyrics are like....a lot. Great beats though.
Personally, I was more of an Eazy-E fan when I was a kid, but this still has a G-Funk sound I like.
Börjar gilla gangsterrap ju mer ja hör det men denna har för många bra låtar för att udanstöka. Alla sketcher förstör den lite dock
I love the music and the humor. He's got style, this Dogg. But the use of b**** frequently really jars me. Can't deal with that.
3/5
enjoyable enough except for the rampant sexist that doesn't play well post me to.... ya feel me bitch.
Ha, that's a tough one. I acknowledge the quality of the flow & music, and I understand its importance, as it was one of the albums popularizing the West Coast sound. Listening to my share of US hip-hop in the late 90s/early 00s, this particularly resonnates. Now I guess I'm lucky not to be a native speaker, because I don't always listen carefuly to the lyrics. And this is a whole other story. I guess it's also a snapshot of history, and history is not always glorious or worth remembering.
Genre defining, not the biggest fan.
This was surprisingly enjoyable for me, considering rap and funk isn't a genre I'm particularly well versed in. It's positively leaking with that 90's inspired sound, with smooth rhythms, good beats and a laid back vibe. It's surprisingly easy to listen to Snoop displays some great flows and there's a decent production on this album, one you learn to expect from a Dre produced album. That being said, the lyrics leave something to be admired. There's rampant misogyny that leaves a bad taste in my mouth and at times, it comes cringey and a little cheesy. I absolutely hated the opener to this album, it made my skin crawl but the rest of the album managed to pick it up when I thought it was already over. Gangsta rap was of its time though and if we were to penalise every 90s rap album for such flaws, none of them would score particularly high. We can only be grateful it's not half as bad anymore at times. Overall, worth a listen with some fun songs on here to bop along to.
Culturally relevant - outside of the hits, its not really my style, but a good listen regardless.
норм.
JAIME 3 NURIA 4
What’s my mummy flipping name? Snoopy Doggity Dogg Dogg.
Why does Snoop Dogg always carry an umbrella? For drizzle.
Man, he is pure lyricism when he gets going, the rhyme eloquent, the beats insistent. Too bad for me I can't take the aggressive "I'm just telling it like it is" that I can't help but see as glorifying negative stereotypes. But it sure is engaging.
OK. I'll admit, I came into this listen ready to hate what I was about to hear. And I didn't. There were slick grooves and some good rapping and the first half of the record was pretty entertaining. I was liking it despite myself. I just don't buy the Snoop 3.0 going on these days, so that's coloring my opinion. I remember him being a misogynist jack-off, and I was starting to wonder if I was misremembering all that. But the latter part of the record started exposing that — just got too gutter and banal for me. But, that doesn't take away from some of the cool stuff going on here. So, credit goes to Dr. Dre too, and I'll call this one I didn't dislike as much as expected, but this isn't going to get any more spins from me.
It reminds me of a soundtrack to a movie or a random show hahaha it's so fun. The songs are really fun to dance too, and it flowed through but the songs sounded the same at points ans the lyrics are bit idk... Okay. It's well produced. Fave tracks: - G Funk Intro (I love that every album so far as such a good Intro song) - Murder On The Case - Pump Pump Honourable mention: Lodi Dodi was okies but the line "I PUT SOME BUBBLES IN THE TUB SO I CAN TAKE A BUBBLE BATH" scratches my brain 😭😭 Tha Shiznit & Aint No Fun was funny as well. However the last part of the album felt like a bit of a chore to get through ngl. I don't think it's my favourite rap album but I can hear how it's influential and significant to ofher rap albums, I hear it's influence in many later 90s and 00s records. But as per, influences get innovated.
Enjoyed most of it tbh. Not really any stand out songs other than the two everyone knows already but I didn't dislike any of them.
Not my thing overall though the hits are great.
Hip hop was definitely in a golden era in the early '90s, yet I've always preferred the East Coast style, from the claustrophobic paranoia of Wu Tang to the fearless creativity of De La, the jazzy cool of A Tribe Called Quest and the clear-eyed storytelling of Nas. On one hand, this is a fun listen, bouncy, funky as hell and full of colorful samples, if sometimes cartoonish. Yet like a lot of the Death Row stuff from this era, it's hard to get past the caustic misogyny and violence. I remain, at age 54, uninterested in how many bitches Snoop will be bangin' in 94.
I'm not a G-funk fan, but Snoop's flow is legendary. Still, it's messed up that the album list has both this and The Chronic, but snubs All Eyez On Me? I'm gonna stay mad at how they do rap.
Favorite Track: Who Am I
Still not into hip-hop.
old 90s hip hop 3/5
It's a really good album apart from the cringe inducing lyrics
This is satire, right?
Save for the lyrics, which are misogynistic to say the least, I have to admit that "nigga has rhythm". 7/10
tag a mate who's the mean old dogg catcha
т. к. не альбом детства и не ухватил классными битами, просто ознакомилась, ок) смутно показался хорни, но вроде не очень
When it hits, it stays
No strong opinion. Listened on the Friday and it’s now Monday. Ehhh
Innovative, groundbreaking in its day. This, unlike recent events, is what made us fall in love with the Dogg. Great album. Still sounding pretty good after all these years.
I know way more about Snoop’s d*ck and b@lls than I’m comfortable with.
Love: beats, flow, overall vibe. Hate: lyrics, recent sellout behavior. I guess that leaves me at a 3?
The beats are the real star here, like Who Am I (What’s My Name?) and Ain’t No Fun (If The Homies Can’t Have None). Snoop has a nice flow to his vocals and there is always the chicken and egg aspect of whether or not the lyrics reflect the environment or set it.
A couple of iconic songs but the skits before several of the songs haven't aged yet and were pretty annoying.
Torn because it's a good album but now he's supporting Trump?
Just a great album through and through
There’s some nostalgia to these songs, but overall doesn’t hold up as well as some other hip-hop from that time.
The beats and production is really good and his rapping is smooth and I liked Snoop Dogg around this time, but have never really been on board with his music as I got older. Lyrically, this was pretty gross, although typical for the era I guess, but nowadays that drops my rating. Rating: 3
I don't have every song in constant rotation, but the hits still are a perfect encapsulation of the g-funk era that made Snoop the legacy figure he is. Those hits still ooze style, which is exactly what they feel like - a stylish listen to vibe out to
Not bad for the genre. The obligatory’nigga’s’ and ‘muddafukkas’ are all there
Really fun, peppy, some absolute classics. Really liked gin and juice. I'll give it a three, but barely missed the cut for four
WHO’S a good boy! Whoooos a good doggy?! Good boy!
It's America's Favorite Uncle but back in the day. The G-Funk/Gangsta sound from Dre and Snoop is what makes this album pop like crazy. Dogg's smoothness and flow are solid at his young age on this. And speaking of young, hoo-boy, I was young once too and these lyrics are definitely juvenile. Have I said all that and worse at that age? Yeah probably so who am I to be a prude about it? But the lyrics are definitely problematic to say the least.
Gotta love some snoop! Fun to listen to. It’s amazing how many songs I didn’t know but somehow so many of those same lyrics turn into catchphrases and permeate into everyday vernacular. Yes, the lyrics are outdated and misogynist and such, and that’s typical of a lot of 90’s and early 00’s. I think people like snoop needed to push those envelopes to get to a level of sensitivity and awareness that exists today.
Snoop’s debut album introduces his unique flow and steeze to the world (‘Gs up, hoes down’), as well as classic rap anthems. Dre’s production is also notable, this being a year after The Chronic was released, which established Dre’s signature west coast sound of that era, and introduced the world to Snoop who was featured extensively in that record as a key collaborator. Revisiting it in 2024, a lot of tracks feel unmemorable, and while the features lift up LA icons like Nate Dogg, D.O.C., Kurupt and Tha Dogg Pound, much of the others fall short of Snoop’s iconic voice and verses. And while Snoop’s lyricism shines from a stylistic standpoint, he repeats a ton of the same things from song to song, giving the album a half-baked feeling when taken as a whole. The lyrical content is also a product of the misogyny-steeped stance of early 90s rap. Viewed through today’s lens it almost feels like satire given how prevalent these themes are on the record, but they were dead serious about those demeaning lyrics at the time. Now Snoop is a spokesperson for T-Mobile lol.
Grew up with some of these songs in the 90’s but have never heard the album from start to finish. Trying to review with context and think it’s a solid listen, but not everything stands up with the test of time. Definitely some new to me tracks that I really liked.
The beats and production of the album are great and the other rappers provide some nice variety and adds to the flow of the album. Snoop's rapping of this album is decent, but he's done better since this came out. I'd look to his other albums if I wanted to listen to him
oiia
[7/10] They should have called this sillystyle
I used to own this on cassette tape - so yeah I've been hearing this for a few decades, but I've never been a huge fan. Like with many 1990s hip-hop albums, the intro>track>skit pipeline is tiresome. The album feels bloated, the jokey interludes aren't funny, and it doesn't give a good listening experience as a full album. There's also a few crummy guest spots that detract from the album. And the misogyny is a deal-breaker for me (although the worst examples are actually in guest spots on the b-side of the album). All that said, there are approximately 38 minutes of solidly good material here, according to my calculations. I really like Dre's g-funk production on this. The synth melodies and relentless bassline go hard on the best tracks here. I also love Snoop's vocals from this era. He has a unique timbre and flow. There is some good songwriting too, with a blend of fun, aggression and smooth coolness. Shame it isn't higher, but for me it's 3*.
3.3 really wanted to like it but was just boreddd faves: G Funk Intro
Way better than expected, close to a 4
I´m not into hip-hop or rap but this one is quite catchy. Just because of that and of "Who Am I" I give it the three stars. 2,5
Iconic. Pretty dumb but iconic haha. The pursuit of cool isn't really worth much to me, however I do appreciate originality, and in this case it seems like Snoop and co were just having fun, doin their thing, and a lot of folks liked it. So it became cool. Which I think is pretty cool in its own right. But nonetheless dumb. And as with so much rap from this era, the masculine/ego shit is such a turn off. 2.5
Enjoyed this. Never knew how much Thug Lyfe was him 7/10
Snoop's delivery is velvety smooth and Dre's production is slick but it doesn't really press my buttons. Sadly I prefer the C&W parody of Gin & Juice....
Solid beats and production, good variety in flows and styles, and some entertaining moments. Lyrical content was not to my tastes, and several songs felt too long or uninteresting. Overall, not my style but I understand Snoop's influence on west-coast hip-hop and the genre at large.
Not a rap fan, but this was really good and easy to listen to.
Gin and Juice er gott. Who Am I er alveg funky. Rest er filler og jújú nostalgic fyrir marga.... ágætt en ah þetta er bara ekkert sérstakt.
I love old school hip hop and apparently this is one of the all time classics … But it’s never done much for me. Snoop’s got nice tone and flow I guess. But the content is pretty gross and I never really cared for P-Funk so G-Funk production is not my thing. A couple of decent hooks on there, but I reckon they are mostly recycled George Clinton anyway. Down the middle 3 stars I guess.
Good but kinda gross haha 😆
Opening skit screams ‘90s. Dr Dre’s signature production sound from the start. Surprised Gin and Juice is this old. Main themes: smoking weed and overt misogyny. Haven’t stopped nodding my head since the album started. Highlights: Murder Was the Case, Gz and Hustlas.
lol hell yeah. can't say I've ever listened to this album. Ok first song starting out with a female rapper?? nice. Tons of bangers: Gin and Juice.. Lodi Dodi Murder Was the Case - always liked this one Who Am I My sensibilities are much more delicate these days so this was a bit of a struggle at times lol but what a classic. 90s kid approved. 3/5
Catchy and entertaining if you don't mind the lyrics that much. Snoop has an awesome flow, but gangsta rap is dated
Yeah is good I enjoy
3, but I should really deduct a star for the awful album artwork and the boringly misogynic lyrics. I like Gin and Juice though.
I had heard parts of this album before- my brother had owned it growing up. It's a solid album- Snoop has a fun style and the hits are definitely hits (Gin and Juice is a certified banger). It did feel a little one note by the end though. 3.5/5, but not quite a 4
I'm still not wild about hip-hop, but I realize that this album is better than most from that genre..
I didn't expect to like this one. The lyrics are cringey in places and sexist/overly hedonistic throughout, and it lacks some of the fire behind the more "conscious" rap. But Snoop's flow and Dre's production still makes it a fun listen in places.
I do like Snoop Dogg generally, but the only way I can describe him across this whole album is a Wayne's World sketch stretched. Gin and Juice is still massive
Admittedly better than I expected it to be, with a lot of great melodic hooks that make each song have pretty catchy moments, and while Snoop's flow is iconic to the point of parody nowadays, here it's pretty solid. I think most of it lyrically just feels a tad one note for my liking. This doesn't dive into the world of the life nearly as much as its peers, and it means much of the album is very laid back and relatively safe. This fits his demeanor, but it still struggles to stand toe-to-toe with other iconic hip hop albums from the time, but I will admit it has the potential to be better than a lot of them. It just barely misses the mark.
Cooles Hip-Hop-Album. Die Synth-Lines unten drunter sind für mich charakteristisch.
Maybe it was banger back in those days. But now it feels like one long bad macho ganster vibes spread across 10+ songs with pause between them
I've never listened to this, but of course Gin and Juice is a classic and I can't help but still love it for the nostalgia. It's such a well produced album and I understand its place on this list, but for me it's a 3. I only go to 4 stars if I'd absolutely listen again, and I don't really want to listen to this again. I always do my best to understand when something is a product of its time, take the good, and leave the bad. I try to analyze how some things were acceptable then that may not be now, and why that is. But these lyrics are just nasty to women and I don't want to hear them again.
He’s not amazing at anything but overall it’s good and he’s really important to the scene. He’s basically rap’s Claude Makelele.
I like Snoop and I like Dr. Dre, but this album didn't move me. I found it just OK.
Highlights were Gin and Juice, Tha Shiznit and Murder was the Case
Not my genre but fun.
Snoop einfach Klasse. Geiler Flow, coole Stimme. Album aber geht so Songs der Playlist hinzugefügt: Keine
Some classic vibes here, and undeniable influence...but Snoop, as much of a personality as he is, always seemed a weaker rapper to me. This is dated.
The Shiznit:iä vitsinä, en jaksa samojen teemojen kehittelyä muissa biiseissä. 3,5
Classic but not for moi
Pre-listening thoughts: can’t say I’ve ever sat down and listened to snoop dogg. Sure sure the man is talented but I’ve just never really had the interest in listening to rap that is misogynistic like that 😭😭😭 Post/during listening thoughts: man my ears love this but it’s like so lyrically not aligned with what I want to listen to. The beats are crazy good and the flows are also wonderfully crafted. But my god almost the whole album is shallow subject matter - smoking, drinking, objectifying women. I want substance not substances 😞💔 also the interludes are attached to the tracks and are genuinely bizarre sorry 6/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah Fav tracks: Tha Shiznit, Gin and Juice, Serial Killa, Murder Was the Case, Gz and Hustlas Least fav tracks: For All My…, Ain’t No Fun, Pump Pump
3.5
3.5 rounded down honestly a lot more fun than i was anticipating.. i think i’m just burnt out on snoop. interesting to compare this to his more recent tv appearances at the olympics and whatnot highlights: gin and juice, the shiznit, who am i (what’s my name)?, ain’t no fun (if the homies can’t have none) (feb 23 2026)
The Good: S to the N to OOP and the D O G The Bad: It’s rap music... The Ugly: G-Funk rap music… Oddly enough, in comparison with The Chronic, which I hated, Snoop does have something enjoyable to listen to. Guess there is a little less bravado in his rhyming, and more of a “I’ll shank ya if ya don’t like it!” kind of thing. Going to go against my gut, and dish out a 3*...
First time listening to full album. It was okay. I heard some lyrics repeated across songs.
It's super catchy, but maybe not super work-appropriate, ha!
Good tunes, creative lyrics
I don’t think this holds up. But obviously holds its place in history
I thought it was a good album. I’m not a huge rap listener, so that’s probably why I’m not giving it a higher rating. But I’d give it a 3.5 out of 5. Sonically the album is very good. The sound engineering was excellent. Also the flow of the album from song into song was great.
Some were cool to listen to
snoop doggyyyyy dooooogggg I did make a face of disgust several times during this album so that knocks her down a rating for me 3/5
This is a classic. I love the catchy melodies and beats. But most of all I love Snoop’s style… but not so much the lyrics - they are, as many hip hop lyrics from back then, very outdated. But late 80’s early 90’s hip hop is just amazing
3/5
Decent
Just like a lot of people who have reviewed this album it is very hard to at today's standards, musically great, Snoop's flow great, lyrical content well that's where it falls down.
Very well made, but I'm not that excited about it.
Some classic songs with good beats. Enjoyed listening but wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to the whole album again.
Love the bass and beats of all songs, didn’t love in totality listening back to back
Banger, did not expect so much sexual stuff but probably should have tbh
I know that this a significant bit of hip-hop history, but it’s dated as hell and not just because they keep talking about their plans for 1994. The misogyny is really over the top.
Some great tracks, definitely helped change the landscape for rap artists, but some of it just didn't resonate with me and I didn't love the breaks between songs.
Like many rap albums, will this be sex noises interrupted by brief periods of music? Early signs point to yes. Yeah we start with an intro. This is nothing. Ooh it was actually an intro to the intro. Ugh this one is actually sick. Lady of Rage rules. Pretty fun, nothing overly offensive or annoying as of yet. Well except for this weird outro to the intro. Now one of the biggest rap songs of all time. Didn’t know the opening all these years was a urination sound effect. I could’ve gone without that. I mean I’ve heard this song like 50 million times, so it’s hard to imagine it fresh. I like to think one of the dogs was on the theramin. Snoop loves: Alcohol, Juice, thinking about his money. Snoop does NOT love: hoes. Simpler times. More weird intros followed by a beat that can only be described as funky as hell. It’s actually nice and foreboding before returning to simple funk. It’s really not saying anything like at all. It’s all flow. Which is kind of fun, but yeah, lyrically this would’ve been cool to me just for the shock factor at the age of MAYBE 12. That’s pushing it. Another horrible intro. Man they’re just so cringeworthy. Again, a cool beat rapped over weirdly. I didn’t expect to think so little of his lyrics but here we are. They’re terrible. The flow is still great. It’s actually very much a throwback to Slick Rick. Wait. It is a slick Rick cover. What is this album? Let’s get more intros. At least it didn’t mention testicles. At least I don’t think. I might be immune to mentions at this point. This one is creepier and tougher but it’s still very simple. This album is so convoluted and complex, but when a song emerges it’s very paint by numbers. Ah the lauded “posse track.” This is cool. This is kind of rap I like. Aggressive, violent. It feels urgent and like there is actually some emotion other than horny. Snoop is a laid back rapper but I always found that sounded cool on this kind of song. The gruff “SUICIDE ISSA SUICIDE” refrain can go away, but hey. Back to the funky, happy stuff. Dr. Dre is, uh, back? Was he here already? Not much to say here, it’s fun. A little pedestrian. Appeals to chronic fans. You know, the album. Then it starts to go off the rails with vocal runs. Kurupt (autocorrected to Kurt) doesn’t care! Writing lyrics, Recording in an expensive studio, producing/mastering/mixing and putting a song about how you “don’t give a shit” on your debut album is only funny for non-idiots. This song is kinda forgettable. Rugged like BF Goodrich. Supposedly. Waste of Lady of Rage👎🏻 Pass. Oh good, we’re back for the jack off hour. Good to see Warren G pop in for this lyrically garbage song! That’s right ladies, your only value is sex. He’s never met a girl that he loves??? Queer icon. I love that for him. Listen. These lyrics just suck. It’s weird that this is what nerds online pine for as they condemn progression. Buy a doll dipshit. Big time lame. Lowlight. The beat again is good, but the lyrics are boring/annoying. The beat is even annoying me now. Is this going to be 2?? Am I too critical? Do I like music? Who knows. This track is devoid of ideas. Ok. Well. This beat is good. The guitar/bass and even the weird nursery bells. I like it so far. You know what, the intro was even kind of fun. Snoop sounds energetic. There are no weird friends around embellishing and glorifying exploiting women. Mr. Malik provides some of the aggression that is missing from snoop himself. This song was a good closer. Party rap is shite. This album excels in this zone. When I listen to music, I have to sometimes compartmentalize the time and contexts from which things were released. I mean I can even listen to bad people and separate the art from the artist. Some of the lyrics here were too much for me. At those points this was not a pleasant listen. However, the beat selections and flows were simple but good overall and I found myself enjoying it much of the time. The interludes and intros were over the top and often unnecessary, and despite its many flaws I think “Doggystyle” just squeaks into the 3 territory due to its bursts of aggression, interesting features and overall catchiness. 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: G-Funk Intro, Serial Killa, Gz and Hustlas, Pump Pump
The O.G.
wow that's explicit and vulgar
Loved Snoop and this album as a kid so much. Such an iconic album cover too. Still super fun, but felt like a lot of filler too. Somewhere between a 3 and 4 for me.
definitely my favorite rap album but I don't like the genre overall so I didn't like the album. I can see why people like it and why its a good album but its just not for me favorite song: Gz and Hustlas
wasn't into it at first but then some melodies were really catchy. BIATCH
2024-09-13...
Enjoyed, but probably wouldn’t choose to listen again as it’s not really my style. Some of the word play was really funny, really loved all the dog variations on one of the first tracks.
Didn't really finish it. Funny lyrics but probably won't listen again
Probably like a good 3 out of 5
eh ja, gangstas. nicht so schlecht, funky: ja, aber auch nicht das „east coast original“ mit jazzelementen.
Not my style but appreciate the artist
A classic that is riddled with fucking skits that ruin the flow. Awesome cover.
better than expected aber die lyrics sind auf dauer nit zum aushalten leider
Snoop always has a good sound and style, but I found it tedious and unchallenging. Too much misogyny as well 3.2 stars
Love Snoop’s flow, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to.
For rap it isn’t that bad
Almost perfect album. Dre's production is some of his best, that G-Funk sound really coming to life as Snoop's flow balances between smooth and hardcore. The background singers are just spectualar!! However, the album kind of drags and could've been a bit shorter. The big problem here is the misogyny..... refering to women as "bitches" and "hoes" along with other vile remarks over and over and over again start to make you feel a bit sick with cringe halfway through.
Sure, it’s consistently vulgar and offensive throughout, but it’s not just for the sake of it. It’s intertwined with tremendous production, West Coast gangsta culture and usage of samples. As with a lot of rap albums, it’s medium-short songs in succession to compile nearly an hour’s tracklist, so it is a bit excessive. But it really doesn’t feel all too long here, as the listening experience is fun, and the album is cleverly chronological. Most certainly not my style, but I can get behind a few tracks.
How Snoop Dogg rose to popularity through rap and cemented himself as a culture icon is astounding given the fact that he is a very mid rapper.
Joyce Brothers didn’t care about boxing, but memorized every fact in existence about boxing because that was what she needed to do to become famous by appearing on “The $64,000 Question”. She wasn’t a boxing expert. She was a celebrity that needed to do something to become famous. I think Snoop is much the same. He’s not really a rapper, but rap was the best way to become what he is: a celebrity. It’s not that he isn’t a talented rapper, but that’s not his real calling. He was born to be famous and he achieved that, and this album- and his star turn on The Chronic before it - is how he did it. This album wouldn’t have allowed him to achieve the fame he was destined for if it wasn’t good, and it is, but I don’t think it’s great. It was on-trend and captured a growing movement at the time it was released, and so deserves all the credit it gets for those things. But as a work of art, I think it’s just okay. But how do you separate its artistic merit from its cultural impact? I will always be affected by having been a teenage boy in 1993 and being at ground zero of its cultural impact. I think it’s a good and important album but I’m not sure how much of that is nostalgia. As many people have pointed out, much of the lyrical content is abhorrent. A lot of the “we don’t love these hoes”-style lyrics sound like whistling past the graveyard to me. Girls and sex play such an outsized role in the psyche of adolescent boys that repeatedly describing how much they don’t care about women might have been overcompensating for what they perceived to be a weakness. It’s not dissimilar to the anti-simping rhetoric you see online today. That doesn’t make it okay, but it makes it a little more understandable. Snoop was a good rapper who had a nearly unlimited supply of charisma and charm. He leveraged those things to make him a celebrity and has played that role for the last three decades. Doggystyle captured everything he was at this time and I think it is an album that everyone should hear. That being said, it is not an album that I ever put on to listen to.
really more of a 2 but bumping it up bc of the Sukiyaki callback
I saw a post not long ago talking about how Snoop Dogg was in a weird situation where he had become known more for his cultural legacy and not his music. I listen to this album and I find that hard to believe considering the incredible beats and buttery-smooth delivery. Then I pay attention to the lyrics and I realize how hard this album clashes with Snoop’s wholesome modern image as your friendly weed-loving uncle, because this is an aggressively misogynistic set of songs. I guess the fact that he was a scion of gangsta rap is part of the entire joke of Snoop being considered so wholesome today, but I feel like a lot of people wouldn’t consider it quite so funny anymore if they were reminded of what he was actually saying back then. Can you ignore it? Sure, but it’s part of the package whether you do or not. This is a fun and brilliantly produced album, but it is something of a relic for good reason. Best song: Gin and Juice
Somehow I forgot that I used to listen to this all the time in high school, so I’m not sure if my enjoyment of it this time was because it’s really good, or if it was just nostalgia. The good news is no one cares, me. G’s up, hoes down xox
1993 Snoop was really into weed, and I don't think that's changed. He was also pretty misogynistic and into hard gang culture, but 1993 Snoop also made great music about it all. Who'd have thought he'd end up the unofficial U.S. Olympic mascot and best buds with Martha Stewart? Anyway, outside of the often unrelated skits I hate that were so prevalent with this type of album, it's a great record. It isn't repetitive and doesn't drag on. The songs are catchy as hell with good musical hooks and arrangements.
Didnt realize some of the iconic lines that originate from here, super catchy singles - as a project its okay
some fantastic beats, sizzling basslines, and great loping raps from Snoop - but loads of filler. this would have made a great EP. 3 stars because the good stuff is very good indeed
a few good songs but nothing too impressive
what da dogg doin 3/5
Just meh. Funk is good but lyrics are so juvenile it gets tiresome. I think I’m just too old for this one!
Gives me strong "Pacific Coast Highway" in a barely legal soft-top vibes. Both genius and "ooof - hasn't aged well" in equal measures. Having not listened to a whole heap of hip-hop originally (too many posh white kids pretending to be "street" at my school), am very much enjoying the chance to do so now. Even if it is through the lens of modern acceptability. 5 stars for the vibes, 1 star for the bitches.
Another musical cut from the g-funk era of Parliament, Funkadelic and Mtume beats. But Snoop's drawl is distinctive enough to stand out from the crowd. Still too long tho. What rap album wasn't (3 feet high and rising is the answer).
Notable track: Gin and Juice
Mostly fun vibe, no standouts for me but solid listen
Great chill-out album, but not so great in most other contexts
1 utwór jest git
3 stars, Snoop is a great mc, and Dre is a great producer, but the record gets repetitive at times. Must’ve been groundbreaking 31 years ago. Hard to judge with 2024 ears.
Distinctly D-O-DOUBLE-G.
thank you snoop for your insights
3 some good some bad. Some killer bass lines
Smooth grooves, but unnecessarily crude. Snoop was a teenager when this was made, and it shows. Otherwise, great talent 3
interesting
Snoop is a professional, he has an immense amount of swagger and a fair amount of talent. This album is a solid display of rap finding itself in the evolution of the genre. Snoop pushed flow and rhythm forward, but this is not an miraculous execution of his rap abilities. He is a complimentary force to a better rapper, and an extremely charismatic person, that doesn’t necessarily make the best rap album.
Some big singles on here. I didn't know Dre added the skits to get the album finished. The immaturity and misogyny stands out, but in a way, it's understandable given their youth and reality at the time. It's definitely a classic with massive influence. The funky beats still hold up. 3.8
Something of a one Trick Pony in terms of style… But he did it well …. The flow still plays well but the lyrics not so much today.
Además fue también el año de In Utero, Thirteen, Frosting on the beater, Siamese dream, Come on Feel the Lemonheads, Last splash, Gentlemen, Where You Been, los debuts de Björk, PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, The Cranberries, Counting Crows, Radiohead o Frank Black en solitario. Además de los últimos discos realmente buenos de algunos insignes grupos como fueron Zooropa, Songs of faith and devotion, Republic, Get a grip, dejando al margen bat out of hell... Incluso Are you gonna go my way, Cure for pain o Dream harder, New wave, Wild wood o One time, two times, three red light...
Has some classic early 90’s songs on here. “Who am I” is one of the great rap songs of that era. Love the G-funk. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again
Not my favorite album of his, but still solid.
Why I find Snoop's own presence on his most celebrated album so inconsequential and easily overshadowed? Not to mention half the songs are more akin to sketches and snippets than fully fleshed out works.
snoop clownin' many playful beats in here. 3.5
Snoop's instant followup to his breakout on Dr Dre's Chronic was a forgone conclusion when he broke out. At the time I didn't think he'd get much out of hit and would always be Dre's side man. He does something here with Doggystyle the other sidemen like Flavor Flav could never do, own his brand and rap about it. What Snoop does here that differentiates him from other rappers is blend his style with others. Adding the funk brings out another angle for his sound. 3.5/5
i liked this but it’s not something i’d listen to repeatedly
Not my tastes, a few excellent riffs. I don't love it but can see why people do.
There is no way I could listen to most of these songs in any sort of casual or social setting other than a college party. Vulgar and almost every song starts with a cold cut skit that I wish I could trim in the apple music app. With that being said, Snoop does have a pretty sick flow and the music in the backgrounds of the raps are pretty consistently good-to-great. I can deal with the obscenity of the album, it doesn't really offend me, but it does lose a star just for all the song intros.
This is to rap music what Fast & Furious is to action movies. Completely over the top, but undoubtedly pretty fun. Lyrics are best taken tongue in cheek, but the beats and bass lines are solid.
3.5
Day 21- June 22, 2024 Not a hip hop person, but not awful. 3/5
I didn't have a chance to listen to this all the way through, but it's an iconic album with some rock-solid singles.
This was a fun, funky record. Sounds really modern to my old ears. Lyrically a bit tiresome though. Favourite tracks: G Funk Intro, Gin and Juice, The Shiznit, Who Am I (What's My Name)?
Hmm... It is cool, but also annoying... Annoyingly cool, like trying too hard to be cool, I have a hard time taking it seriously, then again, the record is also not taking itself seriously... Middle of the road for me...
Good, good flow, good beats. The skits and interludes weren’t great.
Pretty good. Nice beats.
Some gems on there. I liked the back half most.
3.5★ Thoroughly fun. The production is the MVP, and Snoop's flow is inexhaustible. The features are weak/nothing to write home about, and the content/lyrics are unfortunately fairly fluffy/vapid so I doubt it can sustain many relistens before growing stale, even though I like most of the songs here. Still, very enjoyable.
idk what to say to this one it was like enjoyable to listen to but very samey & some of the lyricsmade me double take
Pretty good album, but a product of it's time
Never listened to a Snoop Dogg album. Clear to see why he’s been a huge inspiration. Gangster rap is not a genre I’m fond of, but I appreciated the smaller things like the interludes and skits. He first song I had heard from this was Ain’t No Fun from a Filthy Frank edit on YouTube that I ended up using to made a similar edit video of my friend in high school. Standouts: Gin and Juice, Serial Killa, Who Am I (What’s My Name)?, and Ain’t No Fun (If The Homies Can’t Have None).
Rollo. Le pondré un 3 por las últimas canciones y las primeras. Pero por el medio aburría..
Funny, sexist, g-funk
Good lord this was quite something for first thing on a Monday morning! Licking balls and so much pussy. I have no idea what to make of it tbh. Like it's a fun listen but it's not my music really is it.
Music good, lyrics bad
67/100
“Doggystyle“ is a very spotty album. It was heavily influential to the hip-hop scene, but for as many positive ways it changed the genre, it brought that many negative ones. The production throughout this can seem a little repetitive, but it’s a very hypnotic sound defined the G-funk era of hip-hop to a T. However, this is one of the most misogynistic hip-hop albums I’ve ever heard. Obviously that is not exclusive to this single album in rap history, nor am I saying all rap is like that, but here it seems like it open the doors for other rappers to be just like Snoop Dogg in, again, as many positive ways as negative. All in all, this album is pretty enjoyable and stands at an important position in hip-hop history, but the fundamental issues of this record cannot be ignored. Also, this is way better than “The Chronic”, just sayin.
Snoop is all style and little substance. I remember seeing him live and he spent 20 minutes of his 50 minute set doing a call and response with the crowd "What's my name?" "Snoop Dog!". His flow is incredible, but he takes 'leave them wanting more' to an extreme. For the positives, the beats are all great. This very much is a sequel to The Chronic and that's not a bad thing at all. Lady of Rage is a stand out and I loved every feature with her. Snoop's swagger and flow are both hypnotizing. You could easily listen to him read nutrition facts and it would sound dope. But in all the album feels inauthentic to me. Snoop raps about all of his women and drugs, but it feels like bad acting the whole way. The skits are corny as hell but not goofy enough to feel like they're in on the joke.
5 / 10 Rap clásico. No va conmigo.
This was the first complete Snoop Dogg album that I heard. I have heard some snoop's songs before, but my opinion about dogg's music wasnt very positive. This album change my mind in some way. The album quite surprised me, snoop's flow during the whole album is top, the collabs are great. The album a funky style that i liked. The thing i didnt like was the lyrics, i dont wanna be like boomers sayin' "rap only talk about sex, drugs and that shit" but this album talks about sex, drugs and that shit. It really doesnt bother me that much, but after some songs iy becomes repetitive, which is maybe my great issue with gangsta rap,i found it repetitive. Besides that is a great album and sonically i liked it. 3.5/5
Musically this is so much fun, but yeah, some of those lyrics are rough. I absolutely love Snoop's smooth, nimble flow and the whole G Funk retro vibe sits really well with me. So it's hard to get too mad at this, but I can only appreciate it so much. Fave Songs: Gin and Juice, Who Am I? (What's My Name?), Tha Shiznit, Murder Was the Case (DeathAfterVisualizingEternity), Lodi Dodi
I like snoop but this album is ridiculously crass and does not even have his best work. There are teases of potential throughout but in general it’s forgettable adolescent crap.
I laughed out loud several times. I'm not sure if that was the intention. Although the themes are the same of his contemporaries - money, guns, women, drugs - Snoop sounds like he's having a whale of a time rather than being just angry at everything and everyone. So I enjoyed it quite a lot more than I probably should have.
It’s rap. Not really my style.
2.5 - I thought I'd be bored with this, but the beats were pretty good, so that made it a more enjoyable listen. Lyrical content isn't my favourite, but whatever. It's hip hop from the 90's, I expect it to be sexist. But yeah, liked it a little more than expected, but it's nothing I'd come back to.
Gin and Juice Murder Was the Case (DeathAfterVisualizingEternity) Who Am I? (What's My Name?) Doggy Dogg World
Fantastic funk album!
Not really for me! Good cruising music tho lol. Has some misogynistic and often stupid lyrics I don't like, but still catchy. Pump Pump is prob my fave song on this.
Best Song: G Funk Intro Worst Song: Ain't No Fun
Great beats; less than great lyrics. Overall kind of fun, but not one I’m likely to revisit.
Snoop's charisma and flow combined with his Dre's bumping beats help him and his homies get away with a lot of questionable lyrics. And, as always, the skits add very little to the album. Highlights: "Gin & Juice", "Tha Shiznit" (a masterclass on freestyling and how to ride a beat), "Serial Killa" (sounds more like one of the posse cuts from The Chronic with a harder edge and multiple guests), "Who Am I (What's My Name)?" (It's obvious that this would be the first single. I'm surprised it wasn't the first track on the album), "Ain't No Fun (If the Homies Can't Have None)" (so fun musically, but oh-so-crude lyrically) Notable: "G Funk Intro" (why did the Lady of Rage never really make it?), "Murder Was the Case" (the remix is better)
Lik Ed it more than I thought I would.
Too much bad language for my liking, but a fan of Snoop Dog none the less.
I really like that west coast screechy synth sound he always uses that kind of sounds like a dentist’s drill.
It's alright, but I liked "The Chronic" much more, and this feels like a weaker version of that. Snoop's a cool dude and I like his voice, but it just didn't click that well on a first listen.
Not bad, but I still don't get rap or understand the lyrics very much. But it wasn't annoying to listen too.
Well, it's Snoop Dogg, so... Lots of F-bombs and sexual innuendos. But it's also fun and interesting and tolerable. Gin and Juice, Murder Was the Case they are classic.
Snoop is probably one of my favourite rappers but this album has a lot of gross content. Great beats, love the vibe but the lyrics brought it down for me.
Pretty good but not great
So this is the beginning of the legend that is Snoop Dogg. True to form, he created his own language in this album. It's so experimental and every track is unique. Surprisingly, there is only one song on the album that stood out for me.
Such a classic.
Snoop has a great delivery and the beats are fun and cool, but the lyrics are predictable at best and ignorant at worst.
Similarly to the last Gangster Rap album, liked the music, hate the lyrics. Too misogynistic

Never heard a Snoop album before. Definitely had heard a few songs because, let’s face it, who hasn’t at least heard “Gin and Juice”? There’s a lot to like here. I do think it’s front loaded with the better tracks, but a debut album is often uneven. That’s not to say anything here is bad, just that the quality starts to dip as it goes on. I wasn’t crazy about the misogynistic lyrics of “Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None),” though. Some things age well, some don’t I guess. That aside, I enjoyed this album, but not as much as I enjoyed Biggie’s debut “Ready to Die.” That still holds the top spot for rap albums I’ve heard so far in this project. You can tell he and Snoop were contemporaries just based on the backing tracks, the subject matters, and the sampling styles and features. The features were great though. Overall this was good. But I have a gold standard for rap albums now and if I’m comparing Snoop’s debut to Biggie’s (with Biggie’s being 5 stars), Snoop comes in at 3. Curious to see if this was his peak or if he continued to grow. It’s tough when your biggest hit is on your first album… Standout tracks: G Funk Intro, Gin and Juice, The Shiznit, Serial Killa, Who Am I (What’s My Name?), Pump Pump
Old skool Snoop
Classic snoop
So back up bitch because I’m struggling. Just get on your knees and start juggling, the motherfucking nuts in your mouth… This whole album is dumb, it was dumb fun sure but still soooo fucking dumb. Snoop wouldn’t know what to rap about if it weren’t for his name. Holy fuck was this stupid. 3 stars
Didn’t hate it
Some great songs on here but it would be cut in half if he couldn't use the fuck word
Decent album overall, a few great songs (Gin & Juice, Who Am I) stand out. Thank goodness we've moved away from skits on hip hop albums though
I'm finding that a lot of these early to mid 90s rap albums are not aging particularly well, it's hard to not view these through a modern prism and find them utterly reprehensible. I mean, I loved this 30 years ago but now it either horrifies me for its graphical content or repulses me for its childish immaturity, how can I really be objective?
I was really not looking forward to this, but (notwithstanding the mysogyny and homophobia, which is rife throughout) I found it very listenable. The music is fun, funky, interesting and cool. Ignoring the lyrics I really enjoyed it. Regarding the lyrics, I guess you can say it was of its time. I've no idea if Snoop's personal attitudes have moved on with society's. I hope they have. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Who Am I (What's My Name) Date listened: 18/04/24

Definitely never listened to this as an album! As you probably know, I'm not a huge fan of skits in the album unless they really add something. So far, all I learned is why Gin and Juice started with the sound of a dude peeing. I think I'd prefer just the music. Sick beats so far though! This is a really interesting blend/transition between the old school 80's hip-hop that was more stripped down and the late 90's/early 2000's hip-hop to come. Overall, it was pretty good! There was a good amount of fluff in it and the lyrics don't really appeal to me but the beats were great and the flow was nice. One last minor nitpick would be that the beats were all quite similar feeling and kinda blended into each other.
it’s fine, I like snoop more as a public figure than I like most of his output though
This was a massive record. The band is amazing. Lyrics are a little cringey now.
I said it before and it costs nothing to reiterate. Gangster rap and G Funk aged like milk. Total lightning in a bottle that worked for close to 20 years but has since curdled. But, revisiting Doggystyle leads to nothing but a bouts of enormous laughter. This album is full of childish metaphors and very simplistic analog beats, hilarious skits and it all just feels like shock and awe with very little substance. That being said, this culturally relevant and iconic chapter of rap birthed the development of rap that we have seen pretty active since the mid 2000's. Doggystyle was on the early end during the golden era of peace before East and West rap warfare began. Snoop Dogg demonstrated his rap capabilities and got his beginnings with Dr. Dre here too. The backstory and future is almost better than the album. But, respect it regardless.
Great music, superb flow, infantile lyrics
Tosi kovia taustoja. Tällaista kamaa kuunnellessa tulee kuitenkin fiilis, että en ole kohdeyleisöä
Too long and too many skits (like every fucking hip hop album). Some decent tracks but mostly the usual hoes/money/crime zzzzzzzz
This was a listen down memory lane. Overall it’s the music and beats that drew me in and really do show Dre’s production talent. But the unnecessary overuse of certain “words” in every song makes this a pretty tired album that wouldn’t pass by today’s standards. It’s clear that Snoop had lyrical talent with creative rhythmic delivery and word choice, and it would’ve been nice to see that more here.
A fun trip down memory lane. I started to think about how old I was when I heard this, which made me laugh. Picturing a middle schooler acting like he identifies with any of this… hilarious. Some super memorable tracks and on and I’m assuming the album most would count as his best. But man there is a lot of cringe on here. Enjoyed it but couldn’t get above 3
Dre’s beats are elite and there are some genuine bangers on here, but the sexism and dicknballs humour are hard to escape.
Classic Dr. Dre production from the G funk era - simple but catchy bass-lines, synth hooks (often high octave), creative use of other instrumentals (flute etc.) It’s definitely a patterned approach that repeats across many songs and albums. Snoop’s flow is smooth and distinctive, although at times I think the lyrics were driven by the flow, repetitive, and juvenile. Often times it seems that a cliche is thrown in just to fit the flow. That said, there are verses here that sustained across other songs for years after. This feels like an artist with incredible potential who is just raw lyrically.
Great beats. Too much ball licking
Really enjoyable, especially when looping back to give a deep listen having heard this around 1993. Some of the song constructions are too ever-present (e.g., the backing high synth that became a hallmark of this style). Also had to remind myself a few times that SD was 20-21 when writing this material, which puts some of the theming into perspective.
"No love for hoes." DJ EZ Dick
Chilled beats, very nice flow, enjoyable music to listen to for everyone, doesn't matter what's the background...until you listen to the lyrics. A bit chauvinistic, and certainly doesn't fit into today's culture. It was very rough at times to hear Snoop's lines in this. Stron 4 for the music, straight-up one for the lyrics, and just because of the old times it's going to equal with 3.
Bad ass.
Filth, but filth made by skill compared to modern rap
I liked it! Great beats. Honestly I may have a soft spot for hip hop😭
Was okay. 90s hiphop.
Seems like there’s no direction on any of the songs.
3,5
3,4
p dang catchy, tho i have the same issue with this as i do with a lot of grindcore albums which is overly long bits of chatting before tracks, i dont have the attention span for talking just get on with song pls faves: g funk (intro) gin & juice who am i (whats my name)? gz and hustlas
3.
Fun album. Best basslines made the best songs.
Rollo. Le pondré un 3 por las últimas canciones y las primeras. Pero por el medio aburría..
I know it’s one of the quintessential hip hop albums of all time, the track music saves what is otherwise not a great listen to me in my 40’s. Gin and Juice and What’s my Name are still bangers, but I can’t see myself coming back to this album. 3/5.
Not my favorite gangsta rap album, but I get the foundational elements of this record. Honestly, the Dre beats super cool and influential for kind of all hip hop after this. I also like how "chill" this record is compared to NWA or other early gangsta rap. While the lyrics are a bit silly and juvenile, I like how it just kind of flows and vibes. This is definitely smoke weed rap.
If you can get past the outdated lyrics, this is a good album.
Don't really like the skits and intro. The big singles and classics are definitely better than the rest. So interesting that he was about 21/22 rapping this album, can't imagine him being that age or a kid these days doing an album like this. Hearing Nate Dogg is a real reminder of how good a voice he had, so many great choruses. RIP.
A great reminder how great Dr. Dre is. Also a great reminder how much I love P-Funk. Kinda wish this site gave me one of their albums instead.
This was a favorite back in the day but I have outgrown it
Funky, fun rhythms and beats. Not really my genre but I had enjoyed it enough. Thought the lyrics were a little cheesy at times that made me laugh.
The Chronic, Part 2.
The synth sounds like gta stripper music and i could not get over it
It's weird how snoop has gone from misogynistic gangsta to wholesome dad, but this album was the high point of 90's small dick gangsta rap. Having said that, the beats are heavy, the flow is smooth and there are some absolute bangers here.
קשה לשמיעה אבל מסיבה אחרת לא עומד במבחן הזמן
Started off strong and I have some serious core memories of the song “Who Am I?” but still just decent.
Doggystyle has a place in music history for helping define the G Funk era, and that's really where this album shines. The sound and feel is incredible in that regard, it's instantly recognisable now but I can only imagine was transcendent when it came out, unlike much that had come before it except for The Chronic. Lyrically it's what you expect of hip-hop and rap lyrics, but the flow and dexterity is pretty high and it makes for a good if slightly samey listen. Who Am I? and Gin and Juice are the most known tracks for a reason; they're a class apart on the record, the rest of it is good enough to earn a 3 but nothing more. Said most of the time we've had this genre I prefer East Coast over West Coast sound and still stand by that, has more of a bite and a rawness to it, though I think Dre probably provides the majority of the exception to that rule.
Very iconic and groundbreaking for the genre, but personally not very invigorating. Loads of Parliament all over this record. Ain't No Fun is a bop.
This is hip-hop so i'm obviously out of my depth. But i like his overall style of rapping and the production is graet. Still, lyrics play a very important part for me and these lyricses.... are not for me... Highlights for me were : Lodi dodi, murdur was the case, for all my...,
A bit too much G-funk for me
Pretty good, will have to listen to it again
Didn't realize how many of these songs I knew from this album. Was solid. Almost forgot that Snoop was a rapper.
31 years old???
I enjoyed it! Some of the lyrics were a lot and it would be nice if he didn’t keep calling women “hoes” or “bitches”, but I didn’t mind most of the songs.
Un plaisir à entendre, les débuts du son West Coast. (La misogynie toujours présente bien sûr)
Surprised by how dated this sounds. & not only in the sense that, this could compete with 'Licensed to Ill' for how juvenile a lot of it sounds (it's like there was a challenge for how many skits & songs could be centered around dicks & balls) - but also in the Parliament-heavy sampling. Not bad, just certainly not timeless. & probably appreciated it more when I was 15 instead of middle-aged.
Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg pleasantly surprised me and wasn't as icky as expected. While it may not break new ground in rap, there are noteworthy elements. Snoop Dogg's delivery on the album is commendable, showcasing his charisma and lyrical skill. Additionally, Dr. Dre's backing provides a solid foundation, with tight production throughout the tracks. I believe that Snoop Dogg's personal life at the time added a mystique to the album, enhancing its allure. Furthermore, the strong mentor-protege relationship between Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre is evident, adding depth to the album's narrative. While it may not revolutionize the genre, Doggystyle offers some enjoyable moments and showcases the talent of both Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 3 STAND OUT TRACK - Serial Killa
Great beats Lyrics veer between ridiculous and brilliant
Good!!
Gewoon niet echt mijn muziek
Niet mijn favoriet maar wel lekkere pokoes
I liked it more than I thought I would. It's cohesive and gets you in the mindset it sets out to.
Snoop definitely has a unique west coast style and vibe. His delivery is cool and has decent clever lyrics. Though a major contributor to the style, there's nothing that I love here. It was very interesting to listen to, but nothing i'll come back to.
fun! shows how talented Snoop is/was since the get-go.
