Oh man, I've actually been thinking about this album lately, the fact that I haven't sat and listened to it yet but I knew it was on this list and we'd get there eventually. Snoop is a legend in the rap game, one of those guys with an inexplicable appeal and crossover to white audiences that has stood the test of time. Collabs with Martha Stewart and that smokeless firepit company are the examples that come to mind. Here, he's riding that G-funk pioneer wave, obviously produced by Dr. Dre, and it works like a charm. I'd put this right up there with the Chronic, and it's possible I like even more songs on here than I did from the Chronic. Snoop just helms this so well. Crazy how inconsistent his catalog is overall, but this is an undeniable classic. Close to a five star for me, but just shy. Was curious if this would be a favorite rap album of its year for me, but then I saw it was 1993, and that year saw Midnight Marauders and Enter the Wu-Tang drop ON THE SAME DAY. Stacked year. Favorite tracks: G Funk Intro, Gz and Hustlas, Gin and Juice, Tha Shiznit, Lodi Dodi, Murder was the Case, Who Am I, Ain't No Fun, Doggy Dog World, Gz Up Hoes Down. Album art: Definitely iconic, it's a colorful cartoon image but it's obviously sexually suggestive too. This one is just an all-timer for West Coast hip hop. 4.5/5
G funkt. Nate dogg and warren g. He dont love girls. Exactly right line of ignorant/clever to make rap classic
G Funk Era Snoop: Parliament/Funkadelic influence is crystal clear. Ain't no Funk is horrible, rest is good. Pump Pump reminds me of Cypress Hill. 3.69 per track
Probably the most references to licking balls of album on the list. Luckily the beats and flows are ball-licking good
Lyrically this album isn't really my thing, and I don't really care for the skits between the songs. That being said, it sounds pretty good!
classic rap album, loved it but the skits were a little much
At the start of this album it made me wonder what happened to all the skits on Rap albums that was so prevalent during the 90's. As I finished the album it made me realize how much they bloat everything and make it a slog to get through, some are still great dont get me wrong! Anyway, fun album with some classic hits, hasnt aged terribly well but I still enjoyed most of it.
Lyrically it’s aged poorly and the beats get pretty samey as the album goes on and the fact that there isn’t some kind of radio segment to tie it all together at the end seems like an oversight… but this album is so fun! “I’m fresh up out my coma”
Snoop and Dr. Dre digests Parliament-Funkadelic samples in layers to enhance gangster rap with a relaxing oddball tone. Not quite as silly as Digital Underground who also based their albums on Parliament-Funkadelic samples. However, Snoop and Dr. Dre more thoroughly mix their influences and these samples to create party tracks that exude calm menace.
Dre's beats are a 6/5 Snoop's flow is a 5/5 Skits and subject matter are a 1/5 This is a really fun album but it's about as shallow as the kiddy pool. Misogynistic, braggadocios, and the skits are borderline obnoxious. Very typical of this era of hip hop and as a result I can slide that aspect of it under the rug to some extent. It's meant to be something you turn up to when you want to have a good time and it does that well. This album put a smile on my face this morning.

Definitely isn’t like a work of art as far rap goes, but it’s a super fun listen
Proper devil music, classic
I really like this album. love the 90s rap. I feel like 90s rappers paved the way for rap to be as big as it is today. I'm sure this album was a big part of that as well.
Snoop is the man he has probably my favorite rapping voice. Something about it just fits so perfectly. I am not normally a huge fan of early 90s rap but this album was awesome, the beats were never boring and the flow of the songs was great. Was trying to find a way to get this into a 4 the whole album, and Gz and Hustlas did just that. That was a legendary bassline the whole song.
Snoop is one of the best of all time. Great Gfunk vibes. The skits and interludes are stale and some of the content is cringey but the overall a fun listen.
love this older style of rap
This is a seminal g-funk album and is overall, a really fun listen. The beats are quintessential early 90s west coast rap. The funk influence is felt throughout along with the signature high synth that has become synonymous with the GTA soundtrack. Snoop himself has an iconic flow and his features are solid. We can split hairs over the portrayal of women and gang life, but the album remains an important document of that time both musically and socially.
Although hip-hop is not my thing, the album gets 4 stars. It's creative and fun.
Pretty good for a hip hop album
Great album, really dig the G-funk sound.
Interesting combination of melodic eloquence of depicting dark subject matter in gangster rap. Catchy beats that are quality Dre work and Snoop brings clarity in the delivery. Easy to see why this was so influential. Standouts are "Gin and Juice", "Who Am I (What's My Name)?", and "Tha Shiznit".
Lodi Dodi... 1993... Hypnotize 1996. I know it is sampled but... cannot but feel Notorious BIG heard Snoop's song and was not influenced!!
Smooth as gravy. Spooky, yet goofy. 4 stars ⭐️
This record is heat I loved the beats/instrumentals and the intros and bars were awesome and also pretty funny
Didn’t expect to know so many of the songs…
Funky and fun. Utterly ridiculous persona and story telling, but somewhat funny. It transports you to a time and place, very much of its era.
quite amazing!!
4 Actually really fucking good For a 90s rap album
7/10, I enjoyed it but not sure how it fits into my current playlists or my rotation in general. That’s a me problem tho. Gin and juice is an obvious banger.
Hammer!
A few absolute jams on this album. A few that stink - he didn't find his groove on extreme sexually explicit lyrics until later in his career. This is my favourite era of Snoop Overall. Great album for a hot 4 stars.
First off, hilarious that this album came out almost 2 years before I was born. Bathtub intro was weird. I think that’s how intros used to be. Gin and Juice is a classic and deserves that, but just not for me. It’s very LA vibes. Tha Shiznit was a good 4th song following Gin and Juice. I liked the beat.
Top rap album.
It's ok, better when not paying attention to the lyrics 'cause some made me cringeee
90s rap is almost objectively the coolest kind of music.
Best rap album we’ve had so far. Super cool, super creative; really dug this one.
Dre babyyyy
I'm not the demographic so kind of missed all of this strand of music when it came out. This is a glorious piece of work. Languid, trippy, hip hop with a hook and I really enjoyed it.
The production is so good on this and Snoop’s flow is just unmatched. I remembered it being really fun but there’s also quite a bit of diversity with some more intense tracks like Murder is the Case. The record’s so good that people still like Snoop Dogg despite him not really dropping anything of note for the 30 years since
this album is very dated, but i found it's dated aspects entertaining. i think a big difference between my reaction to this dated type vs. jay z's blueprint was that this one felt more fun and less taking itself seriously. i'm sure that is because it is a debut rather than a career milestone, yet it still lended to a more enjoyable listening experience. this one is probably more like a 3.7 or whatever, but fuck fractions like that. four stars. i would for sure go back and spin this when i want some sorta goofy 90's G funk.
Top notch G Funk
Good party music for when you're drinking gin and juice and need to get your mind on your money and your money on your mind.
solid gangster album, paved a lot of toads
It was really fun! G-funk is cool, some of the lyrics were pretty silly but so is Snoop so it worked and I enjoyed it!
catchy... will be coming back to some songs for sure. Woof
A pretty good rap album from Snoop Dogg. Besides his most famous songs, I am not familiar with any of his albums. So this is my first time listening to any of Snoop Dogg's albums. I do enjoy the G-Funk beats that is famous during this era of rap music. The lyrics are an acquired taste, and you just have to understand the social conditions when this music came out. Also, the flow is too smooth! Favorite Song(s): "Serial Killa", "Gin and Juice", "Who Am I?", "Tha Shiznit"
Good album with laid back beats, flow and lyrics. Decently funny skits. Even fairly classy by gangster rap standards. Favorite tracks: G Funk Intro, Gz and Hustlas
Snoop has smooth voice and his lyrics are so crisp that you can’t help but love these songs. •Big Booty B*tch• Just went on a journey to find out who originally wrote the chorus from the song “Hypnotize Me” because it was in Snoops song “Lori Dodi”. So, turns out Snoop and Biggie Smalls used it from Slick Ricks “La di da-di”. Spent like 20minutes finding that info. He doesn’t talk about women like they’re people but… I guess it was a different time… still liked it. 7/10
Ah man it's soooooooo smooth. Of course I know others may get tired of the rap genre because the lyrics are ridiculous at times but man the rest is amazing. I knew a good amount of songs off this album but was shocked at how great most of the beats were. Early Snoop had such a way of rapping that comes off so articulate compared to his later stuff. There are a couple tracks that I would skip for sure but great album all around. 8/10
Every song was a bop
Very Groovy album. Incredible debut for Snoop. Absolute banger. My favourite song is Gz and Hustlas. My only gripe is the intro song Bathtub is so goofy.
Enjoyed this way more than I thought I was going to! Both this and the Ice Cube record from 92' have been massive surprises for me. Snoop's voice is so funny to me it's like he's rapping about gangster topics but his voice is so silly and whimsical it's hard not to just smile and enjoy. Dre's production on this is an absolute bop on most songs. Can't wait to re-listen.
Snoop is the GOAT, great fucking album!
M-f'ing great and so m-f'ing cool, maybe the coolest of all hip-hop records, which is quite the achievement. Rich and vibey, with fun hooks and surprising turns galore. Snoop has an unforgettable voice and style and the beats are fantastic, well chosen and consistently groovy and surprising. The problems and shortcomings are endemic to the genre; gross sexism and misogyny; glorification of violence; the performative gangsta-ism, though apparently in his case it was more legit than that of others.
This is Gangsta Rap on prozac which is much better than Gansta Rap without prozac. I'll give Doggystyle some love for starting the West Coast Hip Hop genre.
I listened to this twice on the beach, and everything sounds better on the beach. I like the playfulness and the Parliament Funkadelic feel. I decided to re-listen to Dr. Dre and it was better than I remembered. The lyrics can be graphic, as in pornographic, & I’m usually not a fan of too much going on about bitches & hos but nonetheless this is a classic album.
one of the fun-est hip-hop albums ive heard. snoop doggy dog killed it
Excellent
Whilst I like hip hop, I've never been convinced that it was a genre of music that could lend itself to the album format This album has changed my mind. It flows, it's cohesive and every song is great.
Groovy
not my style
Good West Coast hip hop!
West coast classic
The music is high in the 4 star range. The lyrics about misogyny and gang life and stupid stuff like that definitely don't raise it to 5 star. Favorite song: Gz and Hustlas.
I enjoyed this more than I thought
Album that is a huge impact on many rappers that follow in his footsteps. Enjoyable listen.
Beats are good Lyrics are good Album is good Favourite tracks: G Funk Intro, Gin and Juice, Lodi Dodi, Who Am I, Doggy Dogg World
Snoop Doggy Dog
4.5/5 Take off half a point because its a little too silly lol. Really? Open with bathtub? Fuck it why not? Its the 90s babbbyyy. One of the first albums that made me fall in love with 90s hip hop. There are couple of songs sprinkled throughout that feels like Snoop just wanted an excuse to get some buddies in on the album. The songs that are good though, are so fucking incredible. Dr.Dre was top of the game in production and Doggystyle was the perfect place for him to screw around a bit. If songs like "Murda Was the Case" can make this suburban nerd feel like a unit, then you know it's some powerfully transformational music. Unfortunately, this album has, for good reason, come under some sexist complaints. Lots of 90's rap is misogynist and degrading to women. I don't think there is a great excuse to it, however I also don't think it should be something that is hidden to history. We can and should criticize the artists for such themes, but it needs to be analyzed under a wider microscope to why the culture may be more inviting to such a lack of respect towards women. I really wanna give this a 5 but there is just a few imperfections that either can't be looked over, or have been reevaluated by history to be in bad taste. Great album nonetheless.
Dope driving album
An incredibly fun, well written, project with snoops signature smooth and melodic voice; Doggystyle is a classic hip-hop album. Complimented with flawless features and smooth, rhythmic beats this album perfectly encapsulates the essence of being a west side gangster in 1993 L.A. The signature west side whistle synth, the smooth bass lines, panning vocals, comedic sketches, beat switches, all complimented by southern church organ and piano composition; the production on this album was and is to this day absolutely legendary.
Nice GTA san andreas vibes
Great! Some genre defining OG rap songs in there I like.
It’s Snoop.
Theres a reason this was one of the most anticipated albums of all time. And it certainly lived up to the hype. Revolutionary. Changed Hip Hop/Rap forever.
iconic
Love snoop, absolutely fire album but the fucking skits drive me insane
I was 10 when this came out and my parents refused to let me listen to it, understandably. Classic West Coast gangsta rap. Unapologetic. Hard to listen to at times due to the blatant misogyny, but I can appreciate the lyricism and clever flow. Snoop’s mission was to rap about surviving on the streets and bring it to the masses.
cool old school rap
Enjoyed the beats and flow more than I did the lyrics. 2nd listen through does win you over more.
Fuckinnnn huge.
The chronic part 2? Really smooth beats and melodies. The rap style of snoop can start to grate after a while. The bars are pretty simple.by modern standards. Still, a very enjoyable album.z Serial Killa is a great song
Great album and seriously funky 😎
Bra skiva
Nice
Nostalgic
An old favourite
Snoop has such a good funky flow to his tracks. One of the best.
Killer debut from snoop, good production that keeps the head bobbing
loll
7/10
Gin and Juice, not a fan of skits as part of the songs => when you want to listem the songs independently there are annoying but a lot of great songs
Very good
I've heard several Snoop Dogg songs over the years, but this was my first time listening to one of his albums. Overall, I thought this album was pretty good. Snoop's rapping was pretty good; I thought he had pretty good flow, and there's just something so distinct about his voice that makes his rapping enjoyable to listen to. I think it's that he sounds so relaxed, but so precise in his pronunciation that makes him stand out. I'm ashamed to admit that I laughed really hard at a lot of the interludes; the "W Balls" bit was particularly hilarious in my opinion. However, I thought the real winners here were the beats and production. I loved the psychedelic sound that was present on several tracks because it just meshes so well with Snoop's rapping and West Coast style. Overall, I thought this was great album. In addition to launching the career of a pop culture megasar, this album has had an enormous influence on popular music over the last thirty years.
Really cool old school 90's album, special mention for Gin and Juice
Pleasantly surprised! Don’t usually listen to hip-hop but this is a great record, fun and funny. Would only knock it points for some good old-fashioned misogyny.
Snoop has never been one of my favorite rappers but you can't deny that this one's a classic. It kinda gets repetitive as the albums goes on but it's so much fun that it doesn't matter.
An unbeatable classic of west coast hip-hop and gangsta sound. Dr Dre did an incredible job on this.
Really enjoyed it. Funny and clever
Snoop has good flow, but Dre's beats really make this album. Not my favorite subject matter, but hard to deny the music.
I think there are some good vibes on this album, but not every song is a hit
Always knew Gin and Juice, never really gave this a full shot as a front to back album but it’s damn good. All the songs are so funky and slick. This is fantastic party rap. Lyrics are SUPER misogynistic tho…can’t really avoid that one…kind of a turn off for songs like Lodi Dodi and Ain’t No Fun.
no skips except for the interludes
Nothing wrong with classic Snoop!
I'm arriving to the party 30 years late, but pretty great. Loses some points for heavy misogyny, even if I can see how it is reflective of a culture dealing with being socioeconomically trapped - still tough to listen to. But sometimes art is hard.
This album contains the same tiresome sexual bravado, misogyny, and glorification of murder that one hears in so much of this genre. The lyrics are in no way original. It comes with the territory. Disclaimer made. I noted in listening to Dr. Dre's The Chronic that Snoop Dogg was a highlight. He brought his strong qualities and presence here, and the funky beats and Snoop's smooth as silk voice made me enjoy this listen quite a bit and increased my cognitive dissonance in liking it.
Not surprised to see this album here, and I was keen to give it a listen. Snoop is definitely bringing his smooth style and catchy beats, but that wasn't enough for me to be dazzled today.
Yeah…
So much funk. Such a fun album from start to finish. Growing up we listened to mostly east coast rap, and when this album came out it was like nothing we had heard before.
This albums pretty good. It’s got like two bangers but the rest is just ok.It’s mainly carried by the beats.I love the g funk so much, I feel snoop doesn’t really do anything super interesting lyrically or delivery wise.Choruses aren’t amazing on most songs. But gin and juice and what’s my name are amazing.
HL: "Gin and Juice", "Lodi Dodi", "Murder Was the Case", "Who Am I" I'm not what you'd call a fan of gangsta rap. But G-Funk... well, I like g-funk. I will add though, despite the catchiness of the song itself, "Ain't No Fun" started to feel like misogyny for the sake of misogyny. Why must lyrics get in the way of a good song August 10, 2023
classic album. I'm not a rap expert, but you can feel from this album it's legendary quality. This is the genre's purest material.
Not a fan of the extreme misogyny, but Snoop’s flow has never been smoother. And those G-funk beats are perfection.
4/5 Best: Gin and Juice Worst: Lodi Dodi
Good music for the wannabe hustler in me. It makes me appreciate old hip hop where we had different flows and sounds vs the same of today.
7/10 there was some surprisingly good stuff here not a particularly memorable hip-hop album for me, but it was still generally good
I usually make it a point to seek out the original tracklist, but in this case, the generator gave me a version of this album that had no skits, so I left well enough alone. Just a classic West Coast G-Funk album. Best track: Gin and Juice
Snoop Dogg's breakthrough album still seems to hold up after nearly 30 years. Not my favorite style, but enjoyable none the less.
Great production, nice flow, good throwback to the 90s.
Good 90s hip hop album. Didn't get the chance to properly listen to it but will definitely revisit it
Alright I’ll cave - this is a 4. It’s a rap classic that hasn’t aged well. Misogynistic lyrics about rape and gang banging prevent this from being stone cold, some songs just sound comical and inappropriate to listen to now,. What I would have found exciting at 15-16 is now pretty bland and cringy. But the production and songs are still strong throughout, solid G-funk and Snoops best raps and hooks. He never attained this level of pure honest bliss again.
I like the funk influence, the bass lines, and his vocals are great as always. Have to put up with the gangsta crap: the violence and misogyny.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Gin and juice, Who am I?
Classic, in my line up came right after Dr Dre the chronic. Nice back to back.
Slaps
Dripping with style and swagger. Multiple stone cold classics on here. Snoops laid back style works perfectly with these g-funk instrumentals. Of course there is the requisite misogyny here, but maybe not in quite as reprehensible levels as some other records in the genre. Very easy to just bump along with this, and I wasn't frustrated by the longer running time. Fave track: Gz and Hustlas
4/5. A really enjoyable album. The beats are so infectious and Snoop’s flow feels laid back but passionate. None of the songs are bad but some of the songs are not necessarily perfect. It could go up to 5 but I’ll have to spin it a few more times which I will.
PREFS : G Funk Intro, Gin and Juice, Murder Was the Case, Who Am I?, Ain't No Fun, Doggy Dog World, Gz and Hustlas, Pump Pump MOINS PREF : For All My Niggaz & Bitches
Snoop Dogg has one of the most irresistible flows in rap — laidback and cool but with this fun, playful bounce. One of the most distinct voices in music. And the beats on this album are phenomenal, pretty much just as top-notch as anything on "The Chronic," released the previous year. Dr. Dre is so good as sampling these funk songs and turning them into rap anthems. "Gin and Juice" and "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)" are classics but really, all of these beats are excellent. Man, "Ain't No Fun" has a great, joyful party beat. It’s a shame that the lyrics are degrading, misogynistic b.s. I can deal with a little of that here and there but that song was too much. "Gz and Hustlas" is a personal favorite. I love the way that ice cream truck melody opens the song before the beat comes in. 4.5
A seminal album, such a product of its time, Amazing!
first listen dirty, misogynistic, and the coolest Dre production ever
8/10. The lyrics were held back by their utter inanity, and the fact that Snoop can only come up with like three dog-related sex jokes. That said, it sounded really fucking good most of the time. 8/10, great album to cook a massive pot of curry to.
G funk. 8/10
Is it vulgar? Yes. Does that make me like it any less? No, no it doesn't. Love the early 90s west coast hip hop and Snoops flow is so fun to listen to.
Classic, but man, I don't miss the era of rap albums having skits after every other track
I turned 16 in ‘93, so I have absolutely no excuse for not hearing this groundbreaking album while young and free. I heard the radio edit of Gin & Juice, and y was aware that snoop defined the hip hop scene in 94, but I’ll admit I‘m ashamed I missed this 30 years ago. Snoop has become an icon and this album is unapologetic west coast hip hop. 4.4/5
Not really my thing, but it grew on me through the second half of the album. Standout Tracks - Murder Was The Case - Ain't No Fun - Doggy Dogg World 4/1001 Listened 05/21/22
Classic hip hop
What a trip and a treat to go back and visit the debut album by the man who has got to be the most recognizable rapper in the world. Only, I can’t remember the last time I thought of Snoop, purely, as a rapper. This album is pretty good. Not great, overall. It’s a little too *funny*, maybe. Though sometimes I really dig the comedy! Like the opener, “Bathtub,” I really enjoyed. And the radio station potty humor bits are okay. Maybe it’s just long. Anyway…Dre’s production and the evolution of the west coast G-Funk sound coming off their work on The Chronic, paired with some essential gangster rap features from Lady of Rage, Warren G, The Dogg Pound, and others, and Snoop’s great lyrical work and flow, arriving in his debut as an artist fully-formed, makes Doggy Style, actually, yeah, great. I changed my mind. A song like “The Shiznit,” without any features or any real hook (besides some excellent sample choices—Billy Joel and P-Funk—and production from Dre), that offers nothing but pure bravado and bars from Snoop, really blew me away. And it all sounds really good. 4/5.
Dre and Snoop at the top of their game. I mean skip all the skits and just enjoy the ride.
Este disco es tremendo, lo escuché mil veces.
Snoop Dogg gives the impression of being a super chilled nice guy. I don’t know why, I’ve just always assumed he’d be a really cool guy to be friends with. I’m pretty sure I’ve only heard a few songs already so it will be fun to hear an album in full. Side note: I thought Snoop Lion was also such a fun side gig while it lasted. Songs I already knew: Gin and Juice, Who Am I Favourites: Who Am I, G Funk Intro First thing’s first: Who Am I is not a cover of the bombastic Jean Valjean song in Les Miserables. I don’t know if you expected it to be, but it’s not. Anyway, this album was so much fun… until it stopped being. I was having a fantastic time until the end of Who Am I, where it just seemed quite dull for the rest of the album. Until this point, I was loving everything, but these latter tracks left me feeling bored. I wasn’t expecting this at all from how it started, as the funk and that whistly synth, together with the vocals, sound excellent. It is still a pretty great album, but the perfection waned towards the end.
G funk is undeniable
I do feel a bit sorry for Snoop. Here in the UK, at least, he's become a novelty act, appearing in ads, in a way that feels just a teeny bit racist. I guess he's making lots of money. So it's easy to forget how he started out. This album just hits; that synth bass, the way his voice is mixed, the songwriting, it's all just so good, and it keeps moving and never feels too long. Admittedly, it's puerile in places, and Snoop does love rapping about his balls for some reason, but it's a reminder that he's one of the west coast's most talented rappers and not just a caricature used to sell fast food delivery services.
Great, classic old school Snoop. Just lacks a bit of something for me to call it a 5. 4.5
Ok, poor lyrics and cheesy skits. But snoops flow and dre's beats make this fun to listen to.
It's no wonder this and The Chronic changed the game of 90s hip hop. It's groovy and funky with accessible tracks. Many catchy classics with standout deep cuts. Dr Dre wins again with incredible production that shows you don't need samples. Snoop Dogg has a cool, laid-back voice, and his vocal techniques (e.g. his back-and-forth singing and rapping, his falsetto scats, change in tone) showcases his personality while maintaining flow. His collabs are good too, reflecting 90s R&B pop at the time, which is something I found disappointing in 2001. Only complaint that each song goes slightly longer than it should, and I got pretty annoyed by the long interludes in all the last few songs.
Funny I’d actually never listened to this before
It’s a west coast hip-hop classic for a reason. Snoop swaggers and sways through the 13 tracks here. Nailing every part of the gangsta rap attitude as you navigate through this your left feeling so much cooler than you started.
JP: FUNKY. It sounds sexual. In a devious way. This just sounds so different. Favs: Gin and Juice Murder was the case Overall: Its actually quite close to a 5. But not quite. Its a high 4 (8.7). Kind Regards, Taine Forster
With so much drama in the LBC, it’s kind of hard to give less than a 4, let alone a 3.
I listened to "The Chronic" just yesterday for this 1001 album project. This is another album that helped define the 90's West Coast sound and so-called "gangsta rap" as well. I've always enjoyed this album, though there are so many skits that it can break up the flow of the music. Even if you don't like rap, I think this is an album that must be heard due to it being Snoop's debut and how it furthers the 90's West Coast sound.
Very nice introduction to the Dogg world.
Nice
I’d heard some of these songs before and always liked them. Love the way the vocals are performed and the music is great.
Haven't heard this in a long, long time. Kinda forgot that it exists - I know Snoop is actually a rapper, but he's become a bit more than that in his celebrity. What's my name was the first song of his I heard. He uses a lot of Ice Cube-isms here, his inflection at the end of lines being an obvious one. But he has a distinctive voice and flow, and those Dre beats are just smooth as butter. The skits have aged like milk, and I'm sure at some point he'll get cancelled for the lyrics, but he'll probably be one of the last so he's got a while. Overall I really enjoyed it. Not perfect but still some of the best the mid 90s had to offer. 4/5.
It's got dem skiz-its. Does a pretty good job of transitioning from skit to song and dre did a good job with production. Some of the lyrics are a little weak and old school, but not bad for 93.
A classic held back by too many skits. While I love rap, I seldom choose to listen to most rap albums in full over, say, metal due to all the damn skits. Also, misogyny, but what else should you expect from the G-funk era? Still, Snoop never sounded better. He already stole The Chronic, and he goes all out here. Close to a masterpiece, but not quite. B
Snoooooooop. Doggystyle has one of the best rap songs of all time in gin and juice. A lot of the album is pretty awesome as well with heavy stylings of g funk. Snoop is always best when he has a feature with him but this album is definitely his best overall with the best production and lyricism. A true classic 90s rap album that made snoop Dogg more than just a Dr. Dre sidekick. 8.2/10
31st March 2023 Listened throughout the weekend, mainly worked on kitchen stuff with mum and dad. Classic 90s rap and hip hop from the DOGG.
Ein af fáum hip-hop plötum sem ég hlustaði á þegar hún var nýkomin út, svolítil nostalgía þess vegna. En mér finnst hún enn skemmtlileg.
Snoop is so likable. Lots of good songs here.
For the genre, this is one of the best.
- Love the G-Funk vibe - Effortless flow and classic voice - All around an enjoyable listen
Better than The Chronic. Very George Clinton inspired.
Not picnic basket. Picnic casket 😭. bunky boppy fun Beats by Dre I think. didn't really get to sink my teeth into this like the past albums. Hating on Coltrane took a lot out of me because he is so good. This was good front to back, and cohesive, which is at least a three. cant go above that because at four I have the white album and this is not as good as the white album. or is it?
I liked this much more than I thought I would. For how ubiquitous he is, I never really listened to Snoop Dogg’s music and I quickly realized how good he was. Dre’s production was so good too
Nice swing to the music and Snopp is quite self-deprecating but the songs aren’t really about anything.
Fire but also ew
Classic and pushes the envelope for the time. Like all skit s these don’t hit
Heard before, makes sense why this put him on the map. Just a shame he didnt keep dropping music like this
Good for it's time.
Tunes sound good and catchy however lyrics (and even the cover art) are questionable
Musical theatre for cool people. Not for me but I can't deny the incredible skill on display here.
Pretty cool, nice flow, skits that were unnecessary.
Two iconic hits with Gin and Juice and Who Am I (What's My Name)? but the most surprising bop was Gz and Hustlas. I hadn't ever heard that track before and it was so catchy I couldn't believe I hadn't heard it before.
Fun, probably not something I'd throw on all the time, but very glad this came up for me
Not entirely its fault but this made me think of Kendall Roy. Fair enough Ain't No Fun is being called out for its misogyny. As a happily married middle aged man I realise I have a different perspective from Snoop and his friends, but I only half jokingly think this is the saddest song on the album. It is a succession of grown men stepping up to the mic to proclaim "I CAN'T FEEL LOVE". The retooling of P-Funk to meet the needs of hiphop was a genius move of Dr Dre.
Grumpy goths
Bathtub - 2.5/5 G Funk Intro - 3/5 Gin and Juice - 4.5/5 Tha Shiznit - 3/5 Lodi Dodi - 3.5/5 Murder Was The Case - 3/5 Serial Killa - 3/5 Who Am I(What's My Name)? - 3/5 For All My & Bitches - 3.5/5 Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None) - 3/5 Doggy Dogg World - 3/5 Gz and Hustles - 3.5/5 Pump Pump - 3/5
Very rude of Mr Snoop to not love the hoes! It’s like he doesn’t even try But I do hope he got to kiss Mr Dre eventually
Music is pretty enjoyable tbh, but the lyrics are abysmal, the misogyny is unbearable.
Klassista länsirannikkoa, onhan se melkosta horny ahh jou jouta. En ehkä jaksais pidemmän päälle kuunnella, mutta meni kertaalleen läpi vähän välillä cringetellen.
Album #189 Snoop Dogg: Doggy Style I find old-school rap to be too corny and campy most of the time, and Snoop Dogg is probably the most famous example of a novelty rapper; I mean, the guy is a walking caricature of what a 90s gangster rapper is meant to be. If you’re old or white, then you probably think Snoop Dogg is the greatest rapper of all-time despite not knowing a single one of his songs, just because you saw him bake a cake with Martha Stewart. But whatever, we get it, you’re tall, smoke weed, and it’s spelt D O double G; I really can’t imagine that would be captivating enough to listen to over 50 minutes. But honestly? I can’t hate on this one too much. Despite it being juvenile and eye-rolly, and extremely repetitive in themes (yes, your name is Snoop Dogg, and you have a fat cock), this album is a pretty enjoyable listen. If you’re looking for one album to satisfy all the over-the-top camp of 90s gangster rap, it might as well be this. Dr. Dre’s beats are pretty consistently great, and Snoop Dogg has undeniable charisma and stature on the songs; it isn’t hard to see why he has been able to remain in the public eye as a persona for so long. So though it isn’t really my thing, I can actually see the merit in this one. Best Songs: Gin and Juice, G Funk Intro, Doggy Dogg World Worst Song: Serial Killa Score out of 10: 6
Snoop be Ware of dogg
Influential, but so dated its prety embarassing. Snoop hasn't done himself any favors with his later career, and the lyrics (even the non-offensive ones) aren't great. On the positive, the beats are pretty catchy and it influenced some later albums that were much better than this
Solid album, but it’s overly crude. Snoop Dogg sounds great on it though so I can’t complain.
114. Doggystyle - Snoop Dogg (1993) 6.16.26 Variety: 3 Adequacy: 5 Listenability: 4 Uniqueness: 3 Emotionality: 2 = 3.4 rounded down to a 3 "Hi, Snoop, what you wanna be when you grow up? "I wanna be a motherfuckin hustla, ya betta ask somebody" This one that everyone in the 90s heard the hits from. It was all over MTV and even mainstream radio would play censored versions. It was likely responsible for a LOT of suburban white kids getting into rap, and then discovering a lot of 70s funk ( pretty sure this was how I was introduced to George Clinton). But other than the hits, I never really connected to this one. I'm sure I heard most of it at some point or another, but gangsta rap in general was never my bag. This certainly had the reputation, well earned, as more of a party album I think, and did a lot of heavy lifting in the rise of Snoop as the cultural icon he would become. A good portion of these I have not heard since the mis 90s. I'm very curious how much it hold up. I won't be giving much attention to the interludes and skits unless they are more of the musical variety. Even the best skits on the best hip hop albums rarely do anything for me, and in this case I'm guessing will just highlight the immature nature of a lot of the material. THE TRACKS "G Funk Intro" - The party atmosphere hits you immediately, with The Lady of Rage providing the intro to the album. The P-Funk beats and the bass here is great, but the content does not give me much hope about this one holding up especially well. "Gin and Juice" - I'm glad we're getting to one of the big ones early on. An all-time classic in anyone's book. This laid back ode to the sticky icky and the gangsta lifestyle will live forever on the radio and in the playlists of millions. Not that he needed it, but I hope Tanqueray hit Snoop up with some lifetime freebies at the very least. "Tha Shiznit" - The funky flute and organ make this track, and add a bit of playfulness to Snoop's pretty serious story of street life, and talks up his reputation without much humor on this one. The tonal contrast between the lyrics and the instrumentation is pretty dynamic, and Snoops shows that he's not just all hooks and catchy choruses. People sometimes forget he's got a decently acrobatic , if steady flow, effortlessly smooth and full of charm. "Lodi Dodi" - One of my least favorite tropes is the lean into nursery rhyme references in lyrics. It was all over the place in 80s rap, and Snoop dips into it, even so much that his flow on here feels very school yard sing-songy. The instrumentation is at odds with the guest vocals from Nancy Fletcher as well. "Murder Was the Case (DeathAfterVisualizingEternity)" - This is one I remember getting a lot of play by my friends at the time. The instrumentation with the bells, and the dark tone works very well with the life and death narrative. Despite his reputation as a party guy, I think Snoop shines on these more serious tracks. "Serial Killa" - Several guests on this one take the spotlight, and we get a nice bit of variety added to the mix. A nice companion piece to "Murder Was the Case" "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)" - Here's what everyone came to see. Hands down the track on the album, and even beats "Gin and Juice" in the all-timer department. A lot of this is for sure due to the use of George Clinton's "Atomic Dog", but don't sell Snoop short. More than any song I can think of his ( or any of his features) his delivery here is the smoothest, the most charismatic. All the elements here are on fire all the way down to the female chorus. Possibly THE top hip-hop track of the 90s that is rivaled only maybe by Notorious B.I.G.'s "Hypnotize". Aces. "For All My Niggaz & Bitches" - Tha Dogg Pound takes over briefly, while Snoop presumably rehydrates after the last track. While this is fine enough, it's not why we're here, and I could take it or leave it. "Ain't No Fun (If the Homies Can't Have None)" - This one is fun and breezy lite bit of .... oh no. Well, yeah I had forgotten about this one. Maybe don't pay any attention to the lyrics and just bop your head to the catchy as hell summer jam that this sounds like it is. The skit that follows is just as charming, which is to say not at all. "Doggy Dogg World" - The least of the big singles on this squeaks by on the smoothness, but stays very middle of the road and aside from the vocal hook from the chorus, it lacks much in regards to memorability and has definitely lost whatever luster it once had. "Gz and Hustlas" - The piano sample from Bernard Wright's "Haboglabotribin'" completely makes this track, and adds some hard funk to an already very funky album. Snoop's energy on this one is also as high as it gets, which adds some nice flavor. "Gz Up, Hoes Down" - Lyrical content aside, this sounds like it should be the bedroom track, all slinky flutes, vinyl record cracks and smoothness. "Pump Pump" - Less successful self-hype track than anything that's come previously, and it skirts by on attitude alone, as musically it's pretty stale. HIGHLIGHTS - "Gin and Juice" - "Tha Shiznit" - "Murder Was the Case" - "Serial Killa" - "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)" - "Gz and Hustlas" - "Gz Up, Hoes Down" MIDLIGHTS - "G Funk Intro" - "Ain't No Fun (If the Homies Can't Have None)" - "Doggy Dogg World" LOWLIGHTS - "Lodi Dodi" - "For All My Niggaz & Bitches" - "Pump Pump" FINAL THOUGHTS Hits aside, the biggest legacy of this album is Snoop himself. The Willie Nelson of gangsta rap, the dogfather, the weed entrepreneur. Simultaneously astride the worlds of both hardcore pornography, and children's entertainment. He's become the beloved old reference that people who came of age in the 90s can all love, despite possibly never having heard anything other than the hits, much less a full album from the man. There is a very possible future in which Snoop Dogg has a perennially sold out Vegas residency that retired Gen Xers fork over $200 for tickets to, in which the 80-something raconteur of tells amusing anecdotes in between lounge lizard versions of his hits, no doubt closing with "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)". Am I glad I re-listened to this? Sure, it was a bit of fun, and also a bit of a cringey walk down memory lane through some streets that are nigh unrecognizable. Not that they ever were to me, but for a while gangsta rap invaded the entirety of the U.S. and changed the culture for good or for bad. There's no denying the impact though. As music, he hits are nostalgic candy to be gobbled up by people my age especially, but I'm not so sure much of anything else on here has any staying power. Lyrically, however representative it might have actually been of these guys' lives at the time, it does not hold up very well. Snoop will continue to feature on younger artists tracks who revere him as a godfather of sorts, he'll probably appear in some Old Navy commercials with his good friend Martha Stewart, and he'll probably keep finding new ways to rake in the dough. The man is not picky with his business ventures, after all. And he'll grow into old "grandpa Snoop", and remain beloved to some people who don't even know why. I liked more of than I didn't, but not sure I ever need to listen to this again though. PLAYLIST ALTERATIONS - Just let me keep the two biggest hits and I'm good FURTHER LISTENING - The Chronic by Dr. Dre - Regulate... G Funk Era by Warren G - Dogg Food by the Dogg Pound - Safe + Sound by DJ Quik
Yep... very famous, he wins all the medals, his lyrics were on the tongues of multiple generations of youth--cool. Moving on.
Okay you know what, I went into this with extremely low expectations because it's not my usual genre (not to mention the year of release, I was afraid of what I'd hear in the lyrics) and I actually had a fun time listening to this. I absolutely had to overlook the egregiously casual misogyny (unsurprising) and the frequent use of the n-word (which I don't hold against the album, it makes sense in its context, I just don't like hearing it) but Snoop Dogg is clearly very talented and has a flow that's enjoyable to listen to.
I wasn't expecting to but I did end up loving this album, specifically loved gin and juice, lodi dodi and most especially murder was the case.
I honestly think without Dr. Dre producing this entire project Snoop Dog would not nearly be as well known as he is today, this album made him a star and a pretty controversial one at that until his act got all cleaned up. I have to say I am pretty underwhelmed with this project as Snoop really doesn't seem like that competent of an MC compared to some of his feature material. I feel like Dre really does a lot of the heavy lifting for Snoop here while he just kind of fumble fucks his own project. I found a lot more of the songs in the back half of this project to carry more weight and really show off a lot of the featuring artists' abilities to carry these sick Dre beats rather than Snoop Dog himself. I still am not convinced of Snoop's ability of being worthy of such a luscious solo career but I will say there is a lot of great chemistry here which would be a sign of how versatile he would become on future projects for other people. Doggystyle may have a lot of nostalgia attached to it for anyone who grew up with this, so it hurts me to say this but it was never really that good in the first place.
No entiendo el rap. Es muy divertido hasta que escuchas la letra. Buen groove. Pero no es lo mío
Dated? Sure. But even with Dogg now being anything but a rapper this still has grooves.
Well... that's a bit rude Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (5/10) Total reviewed : 347 Already owned : 77 Purchased : 16 To buy : 3 Nope : 251
Difficult to rate. The misogyny and themes seem very dated now and Snoop is a sell out (his wine is not good!) but the music and raps are enjoyable.
Not really my thing, but I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would
la portada es excelente, el nombre del álbum también. La verdad me divierte, pero todo un álbum de 52 minutos me parece mucho… me termina aturdiendo.
I can see (and hear) why snoop was so significant when he came along. This is some powerful music. His delivery really brings you in. The background music is so dynamic. Unfortunately, I don’t like the misogyny which is much part of rap during this time. But, I’m not part of that culture, so I just need to accept it. Go Snoop!
Snoop Dogg's public image has had a monumental makeover in the last 30 years. This is not the record of a person shilling cookbooks and candle lighters with Martha Stewart. I like it musically. It's got some interesting production, and a cool, laid back flow that occasionally breaks into fast, witty lyrics. Still, at least from thirty years later, it just sounds like mostly generic gansta rap lyrics and topics. Sure, it might have been innovative at the time, but I can't help but find it boring when so many great rappers have tackled these topics so much better in the last decade.
It's good. Dre is good at producing. Some of the non-singles are more musically interesting than the hits.
A lot to like here, but ultimately I just don’t like all of the uses of “n*****s” and “b****s”
I don't think that I've listened a Snoop Dogg album this old , but it was actually quite enjoyable, given that it came out quite a long time ago. Overall, it was pretty chill leaving it in the background.
He is not fast but he has a great cadence and rhythm. There is no doubt he is super talented and really made some great music. But man its misogynistic beyond belief (Doggy Dog World) and homophobic, so I can't fully be on its side...but he is really talented and Gin and Juice and What's My Name are just so classic. This album is so cringy but at the same time so easy to dance along with. Another review said it great..."It’s both a 5 and a 1 at the same time so I’ll put a 3 and be done with it."
This album is fun and creative, albeit with ridiculous lyrics. Snoop has a unique unseriousness to him and he brings a charming humor to gangsta rap. Enough so that his bitches and hoes nonsense doesn’t annoy me as much as it usually does.
Bij wijlen verschikkelijk vervelend, maar dan toch ook weer hard
'Huuu rappers rappen alleen maar over bitches en geld en drugs >:( >:(' Snoop Dogg: klopt.
3/5 Favorite Songs: Gin and Juice Tha Shiznit Serial Killa Gz and Hustlas
How many times does he say his name, bitches, n-bombs & weed? Front half of this is good, the back half got real old, real fast. There's some weird Patrick Bateman shit in first few verses of Lodi Dodi when describes his washing techniques. What's My Name is a great song but I prefer Atomic Dog but George Clinton is there, so its alright. Ain't No Fun is disgusting, I got tried of hearing bout their dicks. I had an "uncle" who would everytime Snoop would show up on TV & whatnot. 3
God, the beats are great and the lyrics are cringe.
Snoop Dogg starting off strong. Being a pioneer in the early 90s; lots of collabs too. Fun overall.
Yes, too much swearing - “b******,” “n******,” “who**s,” and so on - bothers me in songs! It’s one thing if they pop up once or twice, but when it’s systematic and not a single song leaves them out, that’s just noise pollution! So, I borrowed the following sentence from another user review, simply because I couldn't have put it any better myself ;-) «It’s both a 5 and a 1 at the same time so I’ll put a 3 and be done with it.»
It’s aight but nothing spectacular to me
Can't believe this record is so early
I am not a big rap fan but Snoop can be funny and engaging and he does not take himself too seriously.
‘Gin & Juice’ is great, but overall this was just ok. Decent hooks, overall 2.75/5 not sure why I didn’t like this more
Not my vibe
nijaki tez 3/5
no spoczi pare zajebistych piosenek ale tez bez przesady
Overraskende snilt
another 90s one where the skits don’t hold up well. the homophobia and misogyny are too much. still, there’s undeniably great music on here
good, fine.
Knowing it wasn't something I would choose to listen to, it was surprisingly good. I can understand why it might not be everyone's cup of tea though.
Liked a couple songs. Didn’t dislike anything really so overall enjoyed it.
lyrics are very problematic and archaic (much like Snoop) but the beats still hit. special shoutout to Nancy Fletcher, Nate Dogg, and Warren G
Absolute classic.
Musically good, content not so much.
The bad: lyrics don’t age well. Very cringy and feels like they were written by and for junior high students. Hard to listen to the entire album all the way through. Sounds pretty repetitive. The good: undeniably great mixing and beats. Represents an era of rap and is fun to listen to if you can do so without paying too much attention to what he is saying.
Super!
Cool flow but the lyrics are so cringe
Smooth flow. Iconic. Not my vibe though.
Snoop definitely had a lot of sex in the 90s. Feel like the lyrics are a bit dead compared to more contemporary stuff.
Maybe its just overplayed, I don't see myself replaying it much more so it doesn't get past a 3. Gz and Hustlas was the only exciting discovery for me.
I have a nostalgia for 90s rap but there's better.
Iconic album but not a lot of depth to most songs.
The opening to this album is insane I’m howling whattttt… There’s good grooves in here with that classic high pitched 90s synth sound that always hits. Snoop’s rapping is good although idk what he’s saying most of the time - probably a good thing. Decent album.
My favourite part of this album was the bass playing, as might be expected. It served the songs well and had such a groove. The vocals were much better than some of the stuff we've had so far, in that they fit the music well and didn't overpower it. That being said I did find the lyrics a little distasteful at points, particularly in the way they treat women. Not likely something I'd listen to again, but I'm glad I did which is something.
funny to listen to these songs after his public image has shifted so much in the 30 years since it was released. aint no fun is a funny opening. i think this album is unironically pretty good its just freaky, doggy dogg world is my favourite. I think this album gets stronger as it goes on. prob a 3.5 but im rounding down
For the time, I'm sure it broke ground, but it was alright. I liked Gin n Juice and another one towards the end because both of them were more melodic like a song.
Not a fan but understand the Production and influence on the genre and the esthetic.
sippin' on gin & juice, laiiid baackk 🧃
Great production but that’s it.
RATING: 7.5/10 HIGHLIGHT: Who Am I? (What’s My Name) LOWLIGHT: Gz and Hustlas
Great flow, amazing production but the lyrics get very tiresome.
Gin and Juice from this album as covered by The Gourds might just be the best song ever. Please listen to it. That's really all I have to say. Moving this from 2 to 3 stars because of said song.
Ah it’s very dated but nostalgic nonetheless
Snoop has always been a little jarring
Cringey. This has aged poorly.
7/10. I know it’s a classic, and it hit at the right time for me—I’ve been listening to a lot of hip hop lately, so this fit perfectly. Super smooth, laid-back, but still hits. I even added a couple tracks to my workout playlists Not everything sticks, but the vibe is undeniable.
Good album, song really good songs. It’s has a comical edge to it. Snoop is already in great form here, but there is a genesis moment here for some of the sins of rap music through the late 90’s and 00’s - namely gang related aggression and the minimization of women. On this album I think the intention for these things is to be somewhat comical, but in the music that comes after and is inspired by this album these themes become unironic and problematic.
Good clean fun.
Honestly 3.5 stars. This was so fun. I thought the songs had good variety, too. And I just dig Snoop's whole vibe.
I feel pretty similar to The Chronic. Decent production. Not a fan of the lyrics
2.75. Snoop definitely is a good rapper with great flow, but the lyrics are what you would expect from a 19 year old
2.75 - I’m not sure there’s a 90’s rap album that truly holds up. A few iconic moments. Otherwise, it’s clear these lyrics were written by a 19YO.
very nice album! i like his flow n rhythm, js his style overall. sum o the songs ive heard b4, others not, dunno y he added the "i gotta pee" n then a pissing audio but yk.. quite explicit lyrics, not that i mind. i dont get ppl who say "i dont like rap" bc like.. wut? they usually say sum bs like "its js talkin, not even music" but that doesnt make sense bc the lyrics, rhythm n flow is music enuf 4 me. i didnt xpect 2 enjoy the album as much as i did, tho. i like his voice
2,5
Lots of sampling and inspiration from Atomic Dog apparently The bass and overall flow is on point but the lyrics I personally cant relate too less lol, basically the opposite kind of life that i lead and want to lead On that note though most of the lyrics are sexist/misogynist/objectifying as hell
It's hard to know how this album will be remembered. On one hand, it introduced listeners to Dre's G-Funk style, Snoop's inimitable flow, and the portamento saw wave lead on synth. It is, at times, hard to remember a time when this wasn't a core influence on hip hop and that alone makes it important. On the other hand, it's an incredibly juvenile album, full of Beavis-and-Butthead-style interludes and rhymes primarily about dicks and balls. To that end, the whole thing is awfully embarrassing in spite of its most redeeming qualities. As with so many other things, it leaves you wondering if it could be released today, or if it would be considered too toxic and misogynistic. I am not going to touch that specific debate, but I will say that even though I'm not much of a hip hop fan, I sure am glad that I was around to watch this all happen in 1993.
musically, it slapped. i decided not to pay attention to the lyrics.
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
I actually didn't expect to like this as much as I did. I mean it's still basically fast food in music form since no one is listening to this expecting any kind of meaningful lyrics, but the production holds up incredibly well and many songs are just so smooth and catchy, it's hard not to like it. There's a lot of charm here and that's worth a 3/5 alone
Snoop's recent rise to worldwide celebrity has coincided with growing legalization and widespread use of pot. Related, maybe? As for the music, I really appreciate the early 90s' intro to G-funk and would enjoy it more if not for the characteristic gangsta bravado, profanity and misogyny. I mean, Gin and Juice is a classic, and Snoop's THC-inflected, laid-back, drawling freestyle rapping masks some pretty aggressive material.
Love the production and the groove. Snoop Dogg has such a unique sound and flow. I think the album shines when it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The violent/gangster songs just blend in with the other rap songs of the era. A very high 3/5. Also, do we need that high pitched, theramin type sound on every track?
Not too bad but not my thing
I can’t decide if I like this. Snoop is obviously a great rapper, and his beats are good but the glorification of violence and drugs, and the objectification of women and sex just doesn’t do it for me.
Fucking snoop dogg bich
Snöööper besser als erwarted 3 doggystyle nach LA
Good jams make the body sway and the head nod. Makes sense now why the rap kids I knew in high school talked the way they did. I can't relate to the lyrics but the music is pretty great.
Wel tof, fundering van een unieke stijl en peak de Dre. Tikje eentonig
I’ve heard this before and I own it. It was a fun party album back in school but I wouldn’t consider it great by any means. I feel a lot of nostalgia listening to this which is going to bias my rating upward, but the whole “bitches ain’t shit” theme cancels that out. There are no bad songs and a couple of really good ones so it comes out as a solid 3.
This was fun and Gin and Juice is an all time classic, but Snoop gets monotomous quickly on this record. Loved the Slick Rick throwback on Lodi Dodi
Yes, there’s a lot of bitches, mfs, and n-words. Seemingly only outdone by the number of times that Snoop, Dogg, Doggy, or some variation is mentioned. Some overall silly ass lyrics. But ya know what? It’s still fun as hell. Great beats, great flow. Even my parents, who hate rap, were vibing.
A 3.5 that sadly must be rounded down. I like this album more in theory than practice. It has some of my favorite beats ever on it, but it does start to fall in the trap of the songs sounding fairly similar other than the standouts like Gin and Juice, Murder Was the Case, and Gz and Hustlaz.
meh
Buen disco.
I'm sorry, I went in thinking I was going to enjoy this but I just didn't. The Snoop Doggy-doooggy doooog is cute and funny - but ultimately quite novelty and goofy. Then the rest is just...very sexist? Which I know isn't exactly a revelation, just it's not actually enjoyable to listen. The first skit made me gag and so I think it just turned me off for the rest of the album.
Yeah good probs gonna be 3 or 4 enjoy the rap two saved songs which is pretty good
very effective imagining of cartoon-California, and i think an interesting way of engaging with Black music past - funk, obviously, but Snoop carries with him the almost-feminine slickness of r'n'b - but just not really my thing. i'm too much of an east coaster, art this Californian sets my teeth on edge, as perfect an expression of what it wants to be as this is
Not my first choice of a genre, but I can't say it's not great at what it wants to do. There's a reason he's one of the most famous people in the industry.
Catching this one closely on the heels of listening to Dr. Dre's The Chronic it's pretty easy to see the progression. It follows in the same footsteps with nothing much more to say. It did inform me that the song La-Di Da-Di by Mindless Self Indulgence is a cover, and one I enjoy much more than the original.
Yay, more gangsta rap. Look, Snoop is a gifted rapper and lyricist; this album is full of great samples and beats, and a lot of great verses that flow really well. But the relentless parade of abusive misogynistic sex, violence, and drugs gets old fast. What would Martha Stewart think?
i do understand the reverance. west coast classic. dr. dre's production is great, snoop dogg's rapping is good. honestly not a standout for me, but nice to throw on. favorite song is Gz and Hustlas
Rating: 7/10 Obviously a classic west coast hip hop gangsta rap album, and maybe the only good thing Snoop has ever really done. It's synthy and funky, and it's also chill and melodic, with great Dre production. A lot of songs are bangers, and Who Am I (What's My Name) is the best one here in my opinion. Pump Pump isn't my favorite as a closing track and skits make the album draw out
Review - bit dated, lyrically not great, and more features than I'd like, but Snoops voice and style is always good and the production is great. Rating - 7/10 Need to hear? YES
Snoop's voice and delivery is so smooth and I love how funky the beats are. But the entire album sounds the same and the lyrics are all so cringey and self referential so my opinion dropped more as it went on. And again the skits are terrible, but this time they're at the start of each song rather than included as separate tracks so if I wanted to add any songs to a playlist I'd have to sit through them each time.
How can a 47 year old white dude write any sort of meaningful review about this? Snoop was clearly talented and this is a highly skilled album. Not my bag but clearly really good. I'm sure he'll be pleased to know I think that
It's an above average rap album. Snoop is a great human being as well. Just living life doing everything that makes him happy without hurting anyone around him. I'll give it a 7/10
Упс!!! Талановитий Снуп)))
Que chido que antes snoop si hacía música en serio y ps dice demasiadas veces perro, perra y pilín pero está chido, aunque si dan risa varias por las cosas que dice jsjajaj Pero bueno, se llama de a perrito así que no podía esperar otra cosa
First half is all classics, great production and sounds so cool to listen to. 2nd half is a chore and Snoop kind of runs of things to talk about/interesting ways to say the same thing.
It started okay— Pretty well, actually. But the rest is just a lot of "nggas and btches" with a tad of fcky fck fkcs. Rounding up to three for the first two tracks, but this was a long hour.
I'm trying to think of an album with skits that I don't mess up my experience of the album. Can't.
