Másters piece

Previously known. Fantastic.

super fire, perfect vibes

Un classique, gros banger

Crisp, soulful goodness

Clásico de Al Green, no me cansaré nunca de escucharlo

Awesome! Great album! R &B with soul, funk and jazz … amazing! Al Green is one of the greatest!

Classic soul. Al Greens voice is a national treasure.

i knew i loved al green but sitting and listening to this, wow, it was just phenomenal

Já começou muito bem. É muito louco como o destino me coloca pra ouvir esse álbum que eu achei que não conhecia, mas na verdade tem uma música que já ouvi por causa do meu pai. " How Can You Mend a Broken Heart"

Echt lekker, funky, soulful, origineel

Amazing vocals, pleasant music to chill

What a classic soul album. Easy to listen to, it is a perfect soundtrack to making breakfast on a Sunday morning or background music while a group of friends sit outside around the fire on a summer evening.

I'd obviously heard the title track before, and you know, you sort of vaguely know who Al Green is, you reckon you've heard some of his tracks on a date or whatever. But man alive, the voice on this man. Those little gospel influences. The smoothness of it all. It never gets better than 'Let's Stay Together' but that's tough going, and I think made comparatively more difficult by the fact that La-La for You is one of the weaker tracks on the album; if it'd been followed by How Can You Mend A Broken Heart we'd all be talking about it as an all-timer of an opening. Because the instrumentation on 'Heart' is incredible. If that opened a track this year I'd sit myself down and turn it up.

The entirety of this record is a hit. Incredible. Iconic. Love and happiness is one of my favorite songs. Love this record.

Classic soul; such a great sound! Producer/engineer Willie Mitchell is often given a lot of credit for the great sound on Al Green's classic albums. It's between a 4 and 5 for me; I'd probably do 4.5, if that were a choice (if only to avoid giving too many 5s), but I think this one has to be a 5, even though I guess I could have deducted for it being so short (about 34 minutes). Back in the day, though, albums tended to be around 20 minutes per side, so I guess this isn't all *that* short. Anyway, for me, it's a near-perfect album, so 5 stars it is. Worth it to glance at Wikipedia (preferably before listening) to get a full picture of the (fairly extensive) musical personnel involved to create a deceptively simple and pure groove and sound.

lovely

Very good!

Can’t get these songs out of my head. He is a gifted man.

Certified classic from start to finish, with no skips. Green's smooth as silk delivery is one of a kind.

Iconic

heel vibeyyyyy we love Al green

Super enjoyable - great message.

Al Green has a voice like spun silk. It is sweet and soulful. The album is a super chilled listen.

Turn me on Al

One of the best soul albums I've heard. Every song stands on its own, but it is obvious which ones were selected to be singles and proven hits. A great singer with a great album. 5/5

It was really nice, I liked his voice and it was groovy

This album is short and sweet, and I thought each song was great. 5/5

Uma pega blues, rnb, amei!!!

Awesome

It’s so rare to encounter actual emotions in pop music that we almost don’t know how to react. This is soul. It’s got feeling. It’s not fake or overpackaged. It’s goddamn great.

Smooth and awesome

Timeless

Não é o Al Gore salvando o planeta, mas salva o seu bom humor! Excelente album!!

let’s stay together is a pure total jam. the back and forth between la la (al al) is chefs kiss. pretty good bee gees cover. really like the up beat numbers.

THE BEST

Really good album the first one that I wish was longer

This fucking slapped. I am guilty for loving soul a bit too much, but this ticks all my boxes.

When to listen: relaxing, glass of wine, chill vibes. Have always loved this album and Al Green's voice

Let’s Stay Together // La-La For You // What Is This Feeling // Old Time Lovin’ // How Can You Mend a Broken Heart //

A classic!! Definitely adding to my collection. I want to give the whole album as a concept a 4.5

THIS is the type of album that deserves to be on this list. A true stand out amongst its genre peer group, outstanding musicianship and phenomenal vocals.

Absolute classic

To je tocno ta zanr k ga vec rabm v zivljenju

yes!!!!

SO PEAK ESPECIALLY JUDY

Banger start Smooth and melancholic. Very good overall. Nice discovery ! Loved it, top-shelf also! <3

What a great record! I needed to play it twice because it’s so good. Al Green delivers a smooth soul record that has everything I need.

I have to admit my shame in only ever listening to the hit single and title track “Let’s Stay Together” on this record. This was a welcomed and very enjoyable opportunity to dive a little further into Al Green’s music. This album is truly phenomenal, it’s smooth, it’s cool, and it’s so soulful. In the same vein it’s also subdued and chill(for lack of a better term). The vocals lack the powerful delivery of a lot of soul music of the era, but it really works wonderfully with Al Greens voice and the instrumentation itself. Speaking of instrumentation, every player on this record is dead on, and the production value lends itself perfectly to the style of music. Nothing big and flashy, just solid, well produced music to groove to. This is definitely an album I’d listen to again, and I’m looking forward to that.

classic. groove. chill. soul. heart.

This felt like LOVE and jealousy and a great romance book.

Opening with one of the most (deservedly) famous soul singles ever released, this album keeps the energy high even when the tempo drops. While tracks like Old Time Lovin' and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart are what my grandpa would refer to as "belly rubbing music" (slow dancing with your partner so close your bellies are touching, scandalous!); there's an infectious, optimistic spirit that pervades the album and makes me want to dance/jam along with this lovebird on every single track. Listening to this album while single feels borderline blasphemous, considering every track is downright limerent. I feel like I need a cigarette and beautiful woman to break my heart. If it means I'll feel half as expressive as Al Green is across this album, it'd probably be worth it.

I’ve long been a fan of The Reverend Al Green since hearing _Let’s Stay Together_ on the **Pulp Fiction**soundtrack. I had to hear more of that silky smooth voice and picked up a best of compilation on CD. I eventually moved onto studio albums including this one where he weaves his magical voice around these laid back soulful grooves. I could listen to him all day and have on occasion. The vocal and arrangement on _ How Can You Mend a Broken Heart_ is a masterful tale of longing.

It gives you a sense of peace; it was part of my morning routine while I was doing my vision board, and I was able to feel connected to myself. He has a beautiful voice.

Al Green is so tuff... so goated...

YES. Perfect. THE soul album. Loved all of them, but of course Let’s Stay Together Most. Al Green is a POS, but, damn, his music is good.

Effortlessly cool. Smooth. Restrained.

obviously brilliant. 5 stars

perfect album. never listened to it in full but wow. so soulfully somber

A classic!! perfect to throw on when cooking in your kitchen hosting folks

loved it! whole album was good imo

This is fabulous. Great to hear the well known tracks and discover some new Al Green. All compositions are his own with a glorious production sound. His voice is so distinctive and soulful with a fantastic vocal range.

Giving it the ol' 4.5 rounded up because this is just a damn pleasant listen. Put a smile on my face

come for the hits, stay for almost the entire album in between them that has no low moments (sonically). great start to finish

Seriously. All stars. 10 stars, 100 stars. The love songs, the soul, the funk, the sadness, the joy... This album is incredible. I listened to it twice back to back.

I have never listened to this entire album before. Shame on me! What a great voice love most every song. I will add this to my vinyl wishlist.

Lovely.

Phenomenal

One of my all-time favorite singers backed by my all-time favorite drummer (Al Jackson, Jr., also Otis Redding's drummer). I was prepared to dock this one a star because I didn't know every track before I listened - though the title track was the first song we had the band play at our wedding. Anyway, the rest of it's great. Including his cover of "How Do You Mend A Broken Heart?" That band found its groove and stuck to it beautifully. And he pushes his voice in a subtle ways that I hadn't noticed before. I also love his album "Call Me." Wonder if that's on the list as well.

Love this! Perfect couple tunes

So good. If you like Al’s greatest hits album and that is all you know then you are about to learn something new.

I've never listened to this album, but I knew one or two songs (9). Al is the best. Nuff said.

A classic for a reason. I'll never get tired of hearing this album.

loved this, was so good to listen to whilst cooking.

One of the great soul artists. This is a classic. Only two big hits on this album, but pretty much all of the deep tracks also bump. "I've Never Found a Girl" and "So You're Leaving" are particular favorites of mine. Green has the perfect blend of gospel influence and romance, soul with a southern swagger, and a perfect melodious voice. This is an all-time album and deserves to be on the list.

favs: lets stay together, how can you mend a broken heart and it aint no fun to me. sunday listens with fam hit the best.

This was such a feel good, jazzy album! I don't really have much more to say than that, it was a great listen!

It's Al Green. That's all ya need.

10 I feel like listening to this album felt like some kind of reward but I don’t know what I did to deserve it

Perfection.

Epitome of soul. Smooth, soulful, even joyful in spots. Can hear the southern gospel influence in his intonation and vocals. All around a great listen. Can’t not like it. Al Green may be my favorite soul artist.

I wonder how much it costs to build a conversation pit in 2025

Need this on vinyl!

Very relaxing and soulful.

Smooth soul classic

Love it!

Oh man the best.

Can't you just hear young D'Angelo as he's taking this album in with his mother's milk, thinking, that, yeah, that!

Kerri cued up this album while I was making her coffee. Callie started bopping to it immediately as it came on. So Callie gives it a 5 stars. Great morning coffee vibes in my mind too. Soul music is underplayed if you ask me. More soul less country please

I've listened to this a lot over the years. If you put Al Green on and can't get any action, it's not Al Greens fault. This one's a classic.

Al Green was just what I needed today. Some really good music :D

Love me some Al Green. Top album for a reason. Great album for sips on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

a classic

There are a lot of records like this, but this one is the best.

what a legend

Great soul, not sure I had ever heard Al Green before the Pulp Fiction soundtrack but this is some good stuff! I have never listened to one of his albums before but this album is really good, glad to finally get to hear more of his music and will definitely meed to dig deeper into his catalogue.

I LOVE AL GREEN AHHHH! OOH BABY LETSSSSSSSS.. WE OUGHTA STAY TOGETHERRR! Immediate 5 star, no notes.

"Let's Stay Together" war mein Hochzeitstanz, von daher muss ich hier die 5 zücken. Einer der großartigsten Sänger aller Zeiten.

As expected, this was excellent.

Love!!!

Come and worship at the altar of soul with the Reverend Al Green. Memphis Soul at its best. Mr Green is definitely in the top five soul singers of all time. This album is five star from start to finish. The embodiment of music with feeling.

Heard title track before and love it! This album makes me want to grab my husband and dance in the kitchen.

This is a fantastic album, this is what I expected from this 1001 albums list. Yeah, this is a 4.5 that easily rounds to 5 stars for me.

"Let's Stay Together" was my first dance with my spouse at our wedding, and I come back to the album time and again. A friend recently called Al Green - hot tub music - and I agree, but it is also road-trip music, lazy Sunday music, Friday Night Dancin' Music and everything else in between.

I feel like I've listened to this before but then again, I should have remembered an album this good. This is solid all the way through, with lots of hard-hitting soul here. It doesn't dip into the overly soft whiney type of song that Al Green sometimes does a lot of. This is funky and soulful all the way through the nine tracks. The first five tracks in particular are great. The title track is a classic. "Judy" is a great one I hadn't heard before. "So You're Leaving" on point. This is seriously a solid funk/soul album and belongs up there with the likes of Superfly, Cold Sweat, and What's Going On. 5/5

R&B so smooth, I might just be pregnant from listening to it

Al Green what’s not to like

Oh yeah baby. This album is kind of fire? This is coming from someone who could hardly be more removed from this genre. What I like is the organic improvisational style fills, the clever songwriting defying expectations in pleasant ways, and overall just a fun listen. The main problem is that the album is front heavy and back light (the best songs are all at the front). Still, I would put this vinyl on from start to end and feel good about it. A classic 5.

gym, loved it

Come on now. This rules.

I really enjoyed this! It was so smooth and chilled. Perfect evening or Sunday listening. I'd own this on vinyl if possible

Fun, good vibes with a couple of bangers. Nice!

Amazing album. So incredibly soulful, relaxing, and soothing. It starts, continues, and ends beautifully. I’m a fan of jazz, blues, and soul but had been doing the genres a disservice by not getting to older albums like this one sooner. An album I will be coming back to for sure.

"A no-brainer Five star album... it's Al Green... this album only has one "hit" on it... the title and opening number... there are some singers, that can sing ANYTHING and they can put, not only, their stamp on it... but make it great... The Reverend is one of them... and, just as i said about Buddy Holly, every song on this record is a master class in Soul and R&B... the organ, and horn section... so class.. produced by the GREAT Willie Mitchell... as for singing... Al Green is one of a kind... he can do it all and in his own way... NO ONE else sounds or has sounded like him... if you EVER hear any of him in what i do, and believe me, he is a big influence, then i would be so proud... this is NOT a Motown record... too raw... too real... the sound is way more Stax-Volt... (actually Hi Records)... "Old Time Lovin'" is so smooth... "I've Never Found a Girl" is truly bad ass... written by Eddie Floyd and Booker T... and when The Rev covers a song... he puts it to BED... "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart", already a standard in the Bee Gees' version, is taken to new places... "It Ain't No Fun To Me" is a funkified ending to this GEM... it sure was fun to ME... one of the world's ALL TIME BEST SINGERS... who also wrote just about every song on this record... FIVE STARS... forever."

fuck i love Al Green. classic. i mean it’s Al Green of course it’s gonna be a masterpiece. 5 star album. for the lovers & the yearners.

I could have seen Al Green at Glastonbury many years ago, but I was young and foolish and didn't know much at that age and had rather dismissed him as an old soul dude. I'm not sure about the exact set times but I think I went to see Keanu Reeves playing bass guitar on his short-lived rock band Dogstar instead. They weren't very good apart from a memorable moment during a lull in the set when a wag in the crowd called out "Keanu, there's a bomb on the bass". With hindsight, I should have taken that rare chance to hear the Reverend's legendary voice. I'm atoning for my error now by giving this a 5.

Sublime example of a bygone age!

There’s a reason this record feels eternal. Everyone knows the title track — one of the most perfect soul songs ever recorded — but what makes the album great is how effortlessly the rest of it glides around that centerpiece. The grooves are deep but unhurried, the arrangements are immaculate, and Al Green’s phrasing turns every line into something lived-in and human. It’s an album built on restraint and taste — the kind of mastery that doesn’t need to announce itself. Even the deep cuts have that Hi-Records warmth, all pocket and emotion. This isn’t just background music or nostalgia; it’s a master class in feel. Sometimes greatness doesn’t shout — it just sings.

Classic R&B from the legendary Al Green. It’s included in several “greatest of all time” lists. For good reason too. I really enjoyed it… I need to listen with someone very dear to me next time … 5/5

Played on repeat all weekend. Even knowing he’s a wife beater I still couldn’t give it less than a 5.

Fantastic album for getting busy 😉

Let's Stay Together - 10/10 La-La for You - 8/10 So You're Leaving - 10/10 What Is This Feeling - 9/10 Old Time Lovin' - 10/10 I've Never Found a Girl - 10/10 How Can You Mend a Broken Heart - 10/10 Judy - 9/10 It Ain't No Fun to Me - 10/10

Really any of Al Green’s 1970s run of albums from ‘Al Green Gets Next To You’ to ‘Call Me’ (and beyond) could be, and perhaps are, on this list. The Hi Records Memphis Soul sound is simply breathtaking, as stunning as, yet much subtler than Motown or neighbouring Stax. Producer Willie Mitchell conducts one of the best house bands ever put together, including the Hodges Brothers, Mabon “Teenie”, Charles and Leroy, on guitar, organ, and bass, the Memphis Horns, and drummer Howard Grimes, accompanying Al Green’s sensuous and expressive voice. Green, whether low and whispering or rising into his falsetto, truly was one of those singers who could sing the phone book. But everything he did, fragile at times, powerful at others, was in service to, and completely suited, the song. The classics are “Let’s Stay Together” and his version of the Bee Gees’s “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” but everything here is close to perfect, the lesser known numbers matching the quality of these two. And he released second, equally as impressive album, in 1972, ‘I’m Still in Love With You’…

Len Houmous tried to book Rev. Al Green for his marriage to Joni Mitchell. She hadn’t even said yes. Neither had Al Green! 4.8 7/9 How Can You Mend A Broken Heart

This isn't an album you need to hear before you die. This is an album you need to hear or you'll die. Jokes aside, Al Green is one of those artists who has never released a bad song. I knew his work because once I saw someone mixing the lyrics of "It's a Long Way To The Top" by AC/DC, with the rhythm of "It Ain't No Fun To Me" from this album, and that never leaved my mind. Even the first line is the same: "Riding down the highway..." Absolut 5 stars.

Obvious

One of my all time favourite albums. I have no notes, it’s just perfect to me.

soft soul

Beautiful voice - and great songs.

Great Soul album with beautiful vocals

What an album. Al Green is such quintessential soul music and his voice is amazing. I’ve listened to parts of this album before but never fully through. This album is mixed amazingly and the horns are such a nice addition. Loved pretty much every song. Fav track: Title Track Least Fav: Judy

Is there anyone on Earth who doesn't like Al Green? What a voice! And the production! It's just all a giant warm hug. Love this.

Pregnancy count for this journey: 2

It’s so good. Every song is good. The sounds are interesting, he sounds great. Perfect

Can I get an amen for the reverend?

Top 3 of my favorite soul albums. The delivery of Al Green is unmatched.

This album is smooth as silk and sweeter than honey. Wonderful soulful love songs, bittersweet blues. My rating: 5/5

Le meilleur album de Al Green. Je ne trouve pas qu'il s'est amélioré avec le temps par contre.

All his sordidness aside (and that’s a lot aside) - goddamn is Al Green the best. The smoothest voice in R&B, hands down, instantly making any party perfect vibes for the night. You’ll wanna dance, sweat, make out, and chill out all at the same time. Sexy, sexy soul music and pure perfection.

Over the past decade or so, Green in particular his Classic trilogy starting with this album, has replaced Curtis as my go 70s Soul fix. Green is a complex, contradictory figure. Without even getting to his domestic issues, it's interesting that he was the one to go full Reverend - even though his music contains little of the spiritual outlook and/or social Consciousness that Curtis, Stevie, Marvin and Donnie would show. That said, there *is* an other worldiness to these creamy vocals and the production - Willie Mitchell is to Green what Jimmy Miller is to the Stones - send these songs into the stratosphere.

Great old time folk/RB album 5/5

I already loved this Al Green's music, but had never sat down to listen to it all as an album. 34 minutes feels criminally short, I could listen to it on repeat all day.

Impecável do início ao fim. Voz, os instrumentais, tudo tão suave, e cool, e sensual. Sempre delicado e discreto. Fortíssimo. Começa perfeito, acaba muito, muito bom.

Loved this recording. 5 ⭐️

Excellent album. Knew a few songs on it, but overall very soothing.

Yes perfect morning music, groooves for days. Best track: Let’s Stay Together, one of the best openings to a song and album. 5.0/5.0

Il y a quelque chose d'unique avec Al Green. C'est reposant, délicate, jamais over the top, même dans ses morceux plus intenses comme It Ain't No Fun to Me. Il y a quand même toujours une drive le fun. Les performances des musiciens sont parfaites et c'est ça qui ressort le plus pour moi.

Great record!

I keep seeing these news stories about how the population is shrinking because younger folks aren’t interested in getting married and having babies. I have the solution, Reverend Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together. I imagine Reverend Green is already responsible for millions of births throughout the world, & I’m damn certain he’s the answer to our current issue plaguing society. I have no desire for children, but when listening to this album, I find myself perusing Facebook for a suitable future ex-Mrs. Lee Bratcher. You’ve probably heard a lot of the songs on this album, but it won’t keep you from wanting to hear them over & over again. Stop what you’re doing, find yourself a sweetheart, put on this album & help the human race survive. If you don't have a sweetheart, this album is still incredible; you just won't be cutting an umbilical cord in 9 months.

Wow, I was totally unaware of Al Green, but could easily recognise some songs that were singles! What an easy listening, easy going album, so effortless so good instrumental, the best vibes for my breakfast with my toddler. Got her dancing to the title track. A well deserved 5

Coming after Peter Frampton and The Monkees this was a very welcome change of pace. Al Green is one of if not the best singer of his generation. Like George Jones he can enunciate and make a single syllable sound like two words. Combine that with the excellent musicianship and varied sounds of this album and you have an all time classic. Only a 5 because the rating doesn't go any higher.

An absolute classic. A genre definer.

***** This album is a discovery to me. Some of the Songs Are welll known, but I think the Album is a great unit - Song by Song.

Really good. Extremely solid and fun to listen to. I think it totally deserves a 5

Absolutely fantastic. Smooth, funky, authentic, soulful, just gorgeous. Love this album.

10/10 perfect album thank u al green 🫡

timeless

Absolutely immaculate album.

Already listened to many many times before. Incredible, timeless, album.

I needed to listen to this album. I forgot how well the feel and lyricism stand out here. Al Green is A-class work as a musician.

Another easy 5. I'm a sucker for this soulful gospel type of music <3

This album was a gift; the kind you didn’t know you needed until you felt it in your toes. Al Green had me the moment he breathed out “I’m…” in that title track and never let go. “Let’s Stay Together” is the smoothest seduction ever pressed to vinyl, but it was his aching, stripped-down cover of the Bee Gees’ “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” that sealed the deal. Every note is drenched in velvet, every lyric delivered like a whispered promise or a late-night confession. It’s romantic, spiritual, and sensual all at once. Honestly? This might be the best gift 1001 Albums has ever given me. If you need me, I’ll be over here basking in the glow of Reverend Al’s falsetto and reconsidering every past breakup while pouring another glass of red.

Al Green is an amazing soul singer and here we have a perfect example. It's such a soft and smooth delivery over fast but not too crazy arrangements. This is great party, background and even dreamy-looking-out-of-the-train-window music.

Almost perfect, the only weak track, Judy, is saved by a wicked middle eight!

absolutely awesome album!

Ech ha jetzt mega lang gwartet bisi das Albom bewärtet ha. Eifach us em Grond dasi mi i dem Soul doch sehr frömd gfühlt ha ond so schwerig gfonde ha das Albom z Bewärte. Mini Meinig esch aber doch sehr positiv gstartet ond emmer no so blobe. Do chönnt mer also scho no chli meh probiere (zomendest) dass es no meh Kontrast zwösche de Songs ged. So schlemm esch das aber au ned, wel e gwössi Ähnlechkeit im Albom als Hendergrondmusig öberhaupt ned schadet wel e gwössi Konsistänz au zo gnaue Erwartige füehrt ond so sehr passend cha abgpellt wärde. E wiitere chliine Kritikponkt esch au weder sehr Subjektiv. So fescht sogar, dasi sälber au ned emmer dere Meinig wär. Also es Baba Albom

100% BANGER

This was perfect listening for a 4th of July car ride, just a stellar soul album with great horns and Rev Green preaching the gospel of love, baby, love. A remedy for what ailed me on this day I didn't feel all that celebratory about America's birthday

From top to bottom, the whole album is a vibe. Not new to me, but I still love it.

didnt know what to expect going in and i was surprised to have heard a few songs. the album was short and sweet

Green's voice is a miracle of tension: hesitating but explosive, terrified but audacious, quiet but at full throttle. Every word is annunciated w/ power as well as timidity, shattering its vicinity b/c it took everything to overcome his shyness, meekness, apprehensiveness: 'It's like burnin' fire, oh shut up in my bones.' This is displayed most magnificently on the six-minute + 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,' a sensational incarnation of fear and focus, a mournful but muscular will to live. I love the strings and horns, the drums are tight and palpable, but it's Green's vocals that have become something of a mythical achievement in the canon of soul music. Only Otis likewise knew the magic of holding back in order to find one's grit and fortitude.

Incredible

What a great fricken album. This may be my favorite album right now. So amazing.

Classic. Pair with Greatest Hits for good overview.

Evergreen

- Horns in this are unreal. Too funky too exist. -Fav tracks: "So You're Leaving" and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart"

Oh hell yeah! Marisol loves Al Green :). This of course is 5 stars!!

Took this album on a trip to the middle of nowhere outside the city to a clarinet shop. Absolutely calmed the nerves

Lovely

The Devine Reverend Green!

Smooooooth

Better than Coldplay

This albums is so good that it's absolutely mind-boggling that it's not a Stax release. Absolutely wall-to-wall and no skips.

EXCELLENT soul album, listened to it twice today

A stone classic and the best baby-making music on the other side of D'Angelo's "Voodoo."

ya its fun

10/10, I’m a HUGE fan of Al Green probably more than Marvin Gaye (mayyybe, it’s close) but yeah I love them both, so fucking good

I have this album 😁

Never listened to this album and it is as smooth as silk

Fantasitic songs, amazing voice, I love this album.

yes. this is the good stuff. big fan of this

I really enjoyed this album, I’ve never listened to Al Green’s albums before only the song(s) which I like. I will now explore more of his albums

A brilliant voice with a great sense of emotion. A stellar album.

This shit was amazing.

The most soulful soul that emanated from any soul, even if that soul was actually a brutally violent and abusive one. Weird how that works.

Smooth and sultry from the master of soul - if you don’t just turn it off after the hit single, you’re rewarded with minimalist funk and buttery vocals for the rest of the record.

So good. More horns and strings than I imagined! Lots of talk about love too. I wish he woulda made a song about riding the bus or something.

Like it

This is a great album.

I actually love this album so much. I wasn't expecting to like it but I was surprised. The music is very calming and it is stuff I would actually listen to so that was cool.

Classic

It's Al so it gets 5.

Excellent album! I'm going 5/5. I love Al Green

I love the interplay of the bass and drums. Some really catchy songs in this album as well as nice rhythm. Just listening to this put me in a good mood!

i like this dude very funky I LOVE AL GREEN HIS VOICE THE INSTRUMENTS i can tell where gnarls barkly was inspired from god i love this

Such a great vibe.

Reverend Green is the man.

Just brilliant, rich soul music. One of my dad’s favorite albums that I heard so often in the car. I also remember that guy singing Let’s Stay Together at karaoke one time and it was great. One of the more universally recognized great albums on this list. Everyone feels the longing and appreciates the expressiveness

Really great album. My favorite of Al Green’s. Anyone wanna see him at Ravinia this summer?

Love it

I had heard the title track before but never actually listened to this full album. This album has SOUL like no other. Every track is a pleasure to listen to and it doesn't overstay its welcome. It leaves me wanting more. My buddy Gio also told me about Al's life story, and knowing how much he went through while still pushing on through is inspiring. A great artist and a great album to start this project with.

Pure soul perfection.

I've put the title track on every "I'm about to get laid" playlist I've ever made, I have to pay proper respect

One of my favorites

Starting off with the title track, a bold, and absolutely correct, choice. This is a great song that is now unfortunately linked in my mind to the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. Al Green is a great soul music performer. It's hard to decide if I like 70s soul or 90s/2000s neosoul better. I'm loving the horns in this. Memphis soul might be the best soul. I knew I liked his hits, but this album is a revelation. Old Time Lovin' is great. This whole album is great so far. It's crazy to me that Darondo wasn't more popular...he has a very similar sound to this album. I'm not going to oversell the importance of an album's length on my rating, but it has some importance.

Super blissful listen

Great morning listen with work

It's an absolute must-listen, from the very first note, you're drawn into Green's smooth and velvety voice. Every song feels timeless!

Was ein tolles Album. Grandios :)

One of soul music's most beautiful voices with one of his classic albums. Includes Al Jackson Jr.'s immortal drums and Willie Mitchell's flawless production. 34 minutes of obligatory southern soul.

Excellent album, nice length, Al's voice is amazing. The kind of soul record to listen to on a chill Sunday morning

love love love. you can feel the emotion and skill. I love the reverberation in his voice.

WOW. A classic example of what true soul/R&B sounds like. Not a single song misplaced. This whole album is a painting that draws your ears to different flavors when it's needed. Nothing too overwhelming. I listened to the album twice over before I realized I had repeated it! 10/10 would smash to

Short album that just hits so so right.

I wonder how many people have gotten pregnant because of Al Green?

Loved the mixing and Al Greens lyrics and tempo. One of my favorite albums so far

It's like I manifested this in my Curtis Mayfield review

amazing, consistent soul energy! my personal favorites are “let’s stay together” and “how can you mend a broken heart…” but every song is just so wonderfully soulful.

You can tell this album is a 5 in the first :30 seconds

Very pretty and sexy. I love how soulful his voice is, and the instrumentation fits every song perfectly

Awesome, easy listen with some soul

Literally had the fight that led to breaking up with my girlfriend of 2 and 1/2 years while this album played in the background. Love this album so much but can’t bring myself to listen to it

Awesome

Smooooth

To start a record off with an all time classic then you’re putting yourself in a position to have to deliver exceptionally for the rest of the Album. He does that and more, such timeless music, smooth vocals and terrific production. I love this album, it’s just makes you feel good

Classic!

Alright. A total slam dunk for five stars. Amazing voice. Great recording. Soulful songs. Done.

tws good, never heard of the artist but will remember the songs since theyre memorable

Great music!

Coming into this album, I figured it'd have a similar issue to 2112 or MAGGOT BRAIN. Y'know, those are albums where their opening title tracks are so great and massively famous that no matter how the rest of the album stacks up, it can't help but be dwarfed in comparison. And it's not like I think that those title tracks don't deserve the acclaim they've gotten; I love them as much as anyone else. It's just that, at the same time, I can feel for songs like "Something For Nothing" getting a bit lost, y'know? And don't get me wrong here either: "Let's Stay Together" is as incredible as I've heard that it is. I can absolutely hear why it's as big as it's become, from every performance on it, but particularly Al Green's. He's so soulfully smooth, my goodness. I'm just thinking, it's such a good thing for the rest of the album that it carries itself as well as it does. I'm not sure if I'd say any of it is on exactly the same level as the title track, but let me say: if that's an 11/10, then everything else is an 8 or 9/10. They're really not that far off — especially that Bee Gees cover. A part of me was already inclined to love it, 'coz I do enjoy it whenever I see someone cover a Bee Gees song that didn't soundtrack John Travolta, and thankfully it lived up to my expectations beyond that. And "Judy" right after it? Like, wow, I just needa shout out those strings, I swear. A++ performances all around, my goodness. I'll admit, this is one of those albums where I wish I had more to say about it, but dang it, sometimes an album is just that simply good that you don't need too many words to describe it. This is classical soul, pure and simple, shared with any of the best by Otis Redding. I'll end a third paragraph in a row with this: my goodness. Unsurprisingly, I'm at a 5. My seventh in a row, even! Part of me feels like I've been too generous with those lately, and that I'm probably gonna look back on a few of these and figure I should've dropped a point at least (checking you, DESTROY ROCK & ROLL). This one, though? Nah, no chance. I'm gonna let this one stay, you can bet.

Not much to say from my end. It's simply some good ass soul, this album this. 4.5 bumped up to 5.

That is a smooth as silk 5. I only knew the title track going into this one – obviously, we’ve heard “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart”, but I didn’t realize Al Green ever did a cover of it. Past those two tracks, the other 7 were all mysteries to me, and my hope going in was that they would all be good enough to come together coherently and make a really strong album. It succeeded and more – just banger after banger after banger throughout this one, in 34 minutes of the smoothest soul music I’ve ever heard. I’ve only ever really known Al Green for “Let’s Stay Together”, but the vocal range and delivery exceeded what I was expecting. I knew he had a damn good voice, but he was channeling guys like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder & Ray Charles without a hitch, while still sounding totally unique to all 3 of them. His voice is the instrument that really carries the emotional weight of this album, and the overall church-y vibe to the whole thing gives it an intimacy that’s hard to replicate. If I had to knock the album anywhere, it’s that a few songs do sort of stagnate, and his vocals alone, as good as they are, can’t always carry some of these tracks to the finish line without my ears noticing a bit of repetition or padding. With that said, when this album manages to find that pure state of zen, it is *perfectly* executed. “Old Time Lovin’” & “I've Never Found a Girl (Who Loves Me Like You Do)” are great tracks that do a great job of setting the tone leading up to it, but his version of “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” is the shining example that hits the real emotional climax of the album for me. When it gets to that point, and the emotions simply take over, with his instincts going into auto-pilot, it’s a harmony felt by both Al & the listener, and it’s one of those indescribable things that just can’t be captured in words. I loved it, plain & simple – it’s the type of soul music I’ve been waiting to get from the generator for a while, and I can only hope we get more stuff like this sooner than later. Just an extremely easy 5 for my tastes.

As smooth as it is infectious as it is energetic. This record is unbelievably good!

So good, easy listening. Love it.

Awesome

This album consists of the magnificent Let's Stay Together and 8 more songs that are good, but not as good as Let's Stay Together. I think it just about deserves a 5.

Me listening to this: mmmmmm mm mm

I accidentally listened to this twice in a row and I loved it

this was a childhood favourite of mine and as i grow older and more yearnfull it only hits harder and harder... How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is just an absolutely devastating song. it absolutely floors me in its beauty... its so elegant, so longing... you can tell this mf has seen some shit. this is some real loverboy music for sure

Every song is a treasure, loved it!

Its not surprising how much I loved this album and why it's on this list. Al Green and his music is near perfection.

Često si pustimo, vrhunski album, vrhunski lik ♥️ Jedan od onih albuma za koje poželim da duže traju, zanimljivo kako dužina ne znači kvalitetu wink wink. Nemam šta puno duljiti, čista petica! 5/5, 9.5/10

Awesome 👌

Smooth and easy listening album. Soft spoken and simply a beauty. Arrangements are extremly good and Al's voice is soothing. Short and well thought album that must be a pillar in every collection.

Got me wet

Man, I've had a string of such terrible albums... calling this a welcome reprieve is an understatement. Al Green can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned.

Smooth operator!

Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh’m … sooo in lerve with youuuuu.

yes, let’s stay togetherrrrr

The reverend prevails. What an album. Absolutely excellent.

Warm liquid sunlight. I know that doesn’t make sense but it’s what it sounds like. An album so pure and golden that it seduced me into supporting this relationship with all my soul - no matter how dysfunctional it sounds.

Brilliant album.

godines

uffffff, ese inicio. No puede defraudarte un disco que empieza asi!!!

Favourite tracks: let's stay together; la-la for you; I've never found a girl

Al Green is always five stars

Fuckin' yeah

Absolutely fantastic. I think I just have to give it a 5.

Superb

Sian - love this album as it is beautiful and great for chilling too Deb - like it and I'm happy if you want to give it a 5

Absolutely classic. Not much more I can say about it that hasn't been said already. A great voice singing great songs on a great album. Can't ask for much more 👍

I mean come on, its a classic. Despite talking about heartbreak for part of it, it really makes me want to fall in love. How lucky it is for someone to experience it

Al Green is peerless. His voice is truly a marvel. This album is so copacetic and pleasant. Just a really beautiful record.

Soul. Grooves. Funky. Romance. 5/5

Очень приятный голос, а музыка - мед для ушей.

A groovy album with many classic unforgettable tunes!

Excellent. I really hadn't listened to Al Green other than the hits.

Amazing soul album

4.7 - This was soooo much better than I expected. Thought it was gonna be really generic after the bangers, but it really wasn't.

This is nostalgia, it was a classic already by the time I discovered in my high school years. It's such a smooth album

One of my favorites. Love Al green.

Stone classic. Not a bad track here.
