Reviews (page 6 of 13)

Pretty good.

David Byrne discovered one drum can do one thing and another drum can do another thing.

Very good but a little out of style for me. A lot of songs I liked still

Fear of Music I love Talking Heads and I love this album, although it’s probably in the 2nd tier of their stuff for me. It’s probably the hardest to get into melodically but I love the rhythms on it and its overall atmosphere and sound. Eno’s fingerprints are all over it, adding texture and texture electronic gurgles and noises. Love the cover too. I Zimbra is one of my favourite songs on the album, with that Tina Weymouths bass, the shuffling beat and the African style guitar. Mind has its moments, including the guitar at the back end but it never quite feels like it quite comes together. I really like Paper, great guitar and bass and I love whatever David Byrne is barking on about. Kind of nice synthesis of Television and the disco-ish dance beat they play with. Cities is great too, quite a simple piano riff but I love the words. Life During Wartime is probably the strongest song on the album and is a great example of their combination of angularity, jerky rhythms and catchiness. Excellent. Despite the ominous bass and overall tone of Memories Can’t Wait it’s not one of my highlights. Air is great though, kind of funny lyric about breathing being bad but I love some of the little melodic runs before they veer off into odd directions. Heaven is superb too, the most conventional song on the album, with a noticeable air of sadness and melancholy. The ‘nuts and berries’ bit of Animals is great, but I’m not a fan of the rest of the song. Electric Guitar is fine, similar to Air in its unexpected melodic moments but not necessarily the strongest. And the. Drugs is fantastic, up there with Life During Wartime as a stand out track. Simple and insistent, atmospheric and oddly melodic, it really gets under your skin. For a lot of contemporaneous bands and a lot of bands in general this would be a 5, but for Talking Heads I’ll go a 4. That feels a bit low considering other albums I’ve given 5 to, but I think I’m judging them to a higher standard (a bit like Richard Hawley actually). There are some great tracks and in terms of ambition it is a step forward from More Songs About Buildings and Food, but it doesn’t feel as coherent and as rounded as Remain in Light, or my favourite, Speaking in Tongues. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Brian Eno take a bow.

Life During Wartime

Listened many times before. 2x. Great album.

01) I Zimbra - 8,0 02) Mind - 8,0 03) Paper - 8,0 04) Cities - 8,5 05) Life During Wartime - 8,5 06) Memories Can't Wait - 8,5 07) Air - 8,5 08) Heaven - 8,5 09) Animals - 7,5 10) Electric Guitar - 7,5 11) Drugs - 8,5 TOTAL: 8,18 (82/100) Quirky, funky, crazy melodies, David Byrne vocals and equally quirky lyrics, and Brian Eno production. Oh, and Tina Weymouth's bass. This sounds very good! If I were a teenager in 1979, I would definitely dig this album! I can't decide if "Cities" or "Life During Wartime" is my favorite track. I also like "Air" and "Drugs", but who doesn't, right?

surprisingly really enjoyed, a few skips but a few favs. docked points for weird memories

Good Album.

Tina Weymouth was the most important Head. Discuss.

This album isn’t bad. Talking Heads has always been one of those bands where most of their tracks are just middle-of-the-road, 3 out of 5’s. However, when they do make a track that’s a 5 out of 5, they really hit the ball out of the park. Unfortunately, I wish I could have the same experience listening to them like I used to, but I’ve really just burned myself out on them over the years. For a newer and younger music critic who’s still exploring different types of music, this is definitely an essential band to check out.

Love this. Talking Heads doing what Talking Heads do best, still sounds fresh after 45 years.

Pretty likeable and fun tunes. Even though I had to listen 3 times because I kept forgetting what I was going to write in my review, I surprisingly really enjoyed it and even added some songs into my current playlist. My top 3 tracks were Cities, Air, and Heaven, the last of which brought my rating of the album up to a 4

i love u david byrne

Another great Talking Heads record. I do have to say that the live rendition of "Life During Wartime" goes a lot harder than it does on the album, but I guess that's to be expected. Everyone who likes Talking Heads should watch 'Stop Making Sense.' Highlights: I Zimbra, Mind, Life During Wartime, Memories Can't Wait, Heaven

Singing Mouths

Really Interesting album. The best Talking Heads album I've heard so far. 4.0/5.0: Great

Talking Heads - mir gefällt‘s!

I listen to songs on this less than I do the songs on the other talking heads albums we've had. still good.

Definitely pretty strange, but at least it was an interesting listen with a few really good songs. 8/10

Never Boring

Very happy about this. I don’t have enough Talking Heads in my life, so thanks, list.

It's a solid album with lots of good songs. I think the legendary musician and producer Brian Eno's output on this record helps. The whole band is at their finest here. I did kind of expect it to be a boring, generic album before hearing it. It turns out that it's actually a fine LP. Moral: Try any new or unfamiliar albums - you might like it!

Perfectly weird, as new-wave and Talking Heads usually are. The more I listened to "I Zimbra" the more I became addicted to it.

4.1/5 Best Track: Cities

I can't believe this was released in 1979. So unlike anything that was getting played on radio in the US, and such an interesting progression from their first two albums. Fresh, different and unusual in a good way. In retrospect, I realize I didn't listen to side 2 all that much back in the day.

Muy buen album. Quizás no sea mi favorito de talking

They are iconic!

Can't really remember because this was weeks ago, lets say 4

Stop Making Sense made too many of these versions inferior

Weird but FUNky. Loved it.

W sumie fajne. 4/5

Not my favorite Talking Heads album but has some great songs - Life During Wartime, Cities and Mind among them. I Zimbra is different and interesting as well. Really wanted to give this a 3.5.

Right on

Fear of Music presents a departure from the band's more accessible sound, yet it remains a vibrant and important addition to their discography. While not the easiest Talking Heads album to digest, its complexities add depth and richness to the listening experience. The band's experimentation with unconventional rhythms and textures creates an atmospheric and thought-provoking sonic landscape. Tracks like Life During Wartime and Cities showcase the band's ability to blend disparate elements into cohesive and infectious compositions. David Byrne's enigmatic vocals and cryptic lyrics add an air of mystery to the album, inviting repeated listens to unravel its layers. While perhaps not as immediately accessible as some of their other work, Fear of Music rewards patient listeners with its innovative and boundary-pushing approach to art rock. Overall, it stands as a testament to Talking Heads' bold artistic vision and willingness to push the boundaries of popular music. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 4 STAND OUT TRACK - Life During Wartime

Liked it

Huh, I just got 77 2 days ago. I really liked it, so I’m more than down to listen to this album. In the end, it’s very good, but I definitely liked 77 more.

Excitingly weird

It's good I just liked the other talking heads album more

Kinda slaps. I've had the records before and after this and seems the closer in the discography to Remain in Light the more I enjoy the Talking Heads. This one has some really hilarious bits and I love David Byrne's vocals throughout, just so much character. 8/10

A couple of missteps at the beginning and end of the album, with a bunch of great songs in the middle.

What a great album this is. This challenge has really got me into Talking Heads, and Fear of Music is another example of why they are so highly regarded. There is a nervous, edgy energy running through the whole record, but it is still packed with hooks and clever ideas. Zimbra is such a bold opener, rhythmic and hypnotic. Minds is another standout, driving and slightly unsettling in the best way. The first three tracks in particular are an incredible start. They set the tone perfectly and pull you straight in. The album feels tight and purposeful from beginning to end. It is quirky, intelligent and genuinely engaging. This is definitely one I will be returning to. Favourite song: The opening three tracks. What a start to an album Least favourite song: None. They are all strong Album artwork: Simple yet superb. Stark and distinctive, even if it is not exactly one for a T shirt

Bueno y chilleo de música 70´s.

Lesser listened to Talking Head album with classics such as Cities, Life During Wartime, Heaven and Drugs

favourite songs: life during wartime, air really enjoyed this. not quite as good as the other talking heads albums ive listened to tho. four stars!

Overall, I liked it, and I thought that the best track was "Life During Wartime".

I am not generally a big Talking Heads fan but I love this album.

Haven't listened to much new wave, this is good album. My friend Lucas would like this album.

Very good album.

Feels like summer

Cool, hadnt heard much talking heads before. Will listen to that one album everyone loves

big suits

I’m waking up to the funky side of Talking Heads. Loved this one from the jump.

Bouncy quirky rock and roll. Loved it.

Typical great music from Byrne and his cohorts Loved listening to this album

This is a great record that defies categorization. It's challenging but accessible. It's lack of complete of complete bangers (there are some but not enough) is all that keeps it from a 5. It's an extremely strong 4.

Enjoyed it; lyrically interesting.

Veramente bellino, finalmente uno stile in cui mi riconosco

Probably my favourite band to hail from New York. Good to hear an earlier album than I'd known previously. Good stuff.

Funky, mildly wacky, old school, 70s

Did not expect to like this

I love Talking Heads, this is not my favorite album by them though. I'd give it 3.5 if I could

After a string of mediocre albums, it was refreshing to get this funky, cool, solid piece of art. Life During Wartime is a banger. The rest is slinky, a bit tense and slightly jittery. David Byrne can convey awkwardness and menace in the same song. Good stuff.

An incredibly groovy and fun record that builds on the great sound of their first two and pushes it into a more experimental territory, and features some of Byrne’s most eccentric lyrics (I’m looking at you, Animals). The closer Drugs is probably the weakest song on the album and is a bit anticlimactic, and really the only thing holding it back from a perfect rating

Pretty awesome album but a step below “remain in light” and “stop making sense” so like a 4.3/5

The best kind of weird

This is a solid album. Lots of complexity and Heaven is a beautiful song. Probably #3 of Talking Heads albums for me but that's a solid 3 albums. I think this album lacks some cohesion that other works have for them.

Last one through the door before "Remain in Light" kicks them into transcendence. Pretty good, but suffers a bit from the same issue as "Speaking in Tongues," where all the live versions of the songs on here are not just better than the originals, but completely blow them out of the water

David Byrne is still a genius.

Classic sound i feel

Mostly excellent

Not as good, nor as well produced as Remain In Light, but still fantastic.

Magical and confusingly interesting

The result of a quirky, eclectic band meeting a quirky, eclectic producer and bringing out the best of themselves. Odd rhythms, a range of subjects and characters in the songs and yet you can't help wanting to dance. Even if you may look like you're having a seizure, it's the coolest seizure you'll ever have. Best Tracks: I Zimbra; Cities; Life During Wartime.

About as high as one of my 3.5’s can be. 3.5/5

Really great album, but not the best by Talking Heads. I’m waiting to get Speaking in Tongues and Remain in Light so I can give them both 5 stars.

I hadn't listened to this one before, but I really enjoyed it. Not every track is a home run, but there are a bunch of great ones. You're either into Talking Heads or you're not, I find. Not many casual fans of this band.

Very good, I need more than 24 hours to really develop a fuller opinion.

Ooh yes modest fan of this one. This style of funk sort of post punk is tight. Nearly every song on here is too-the-point and nice

Me gusta ésta banda

More Talking Heads!!

Did they make a bad album? Classics Cities, Life During Wartime, Heaven.

An eclectic sound for the ‘70s but at the same time, very fitting for the time. Their creativity shines throughout the album and makes for a fun and groovy time. I think this is an album that deserves multiple listens before judging

Just feels nice to listen to

Seems quite original and has influenced a lot of music ever since.

Didn't get a chance to really analyze but I was listening to this while cooking some pork tenderloin. It had me moving out there. Best sear on pork I’ve ever done and I couldn’t have done it without David Byrne as my companion throughout.

A vision of music to come. Eno and Byrne in virtuous form.

More a collection of sound experiments than I remembered, though Byrne’s unique repetition of certain sounds and phrases is entrancing — “tune this - elec - tric - gui - tar.” “Life During Wartime” and “Memories Can Wait” could carry the worst of albums. Fortunately, Fear of Music is not that.

I’ve always been a Talking Heads fan but I don’t know much beyond the hits and Little Creatures so this is a good choice. Aptly named, cuz these songs are kinda scary and disconcerting. Heaven is a great homage to Bowie. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for this on vinyl. Tracks added to Spotify: 3

I liked it a lot but not as much as Remain in Light! :)

Great album, glad I finally listened. Life In wartime and heaven are both amazing songs, but I think their live performances on stop making sense are better

Original and energetic

The Talking Heads are weirdly delicious. I like a lot of their songs, but haven't really put them into my rotation...that might change now!

Talking Heads always deliver interesting rhythm, this album is no exception. Very creative but at times monotonous.

Day2- i wish i was introduced to the talking heads when i was younger. such a cool album

Pretty fun talking heads classic.

Innovative music. Lyrics make one think. Popular in the early 80s

I've slightly forgotten what I thought of this - it's talking heads so obviously I liked it but I don't remember any particular songs so it will go in the strong 4 category

Ironic that I start this project (one where I will discover new music) with an album I already have heard many times from a band I love. I do feel this is one of their weaker albums in terms of entertainment value. While it’s definitely progressive and shows the band at or near their peak of creativity and originality, that doesn’t mean it’s entertaining or capable of eliciting an emotional response, personal connection, or overt reaction other than “huh, that was cool.”

anders aber cool

Not something I would usually listen to but otherwise mostly enjoyable.

Banger after banger. Made me want to listen to more talking Heads.

David Byrne loves disco

Interesting listen. Did not think I would enjoy but I would listen to it again.

It’s so crazy that this is from the 70s!

Nice album.

I hope there are at least two more albums from these guys on this list. Personally Little Creatures Remain in Light and Speaking In Tongues are all superior albums. Love these guys those and also one of my fav tracks from them on here.

The Talking Heads know what they're about. Many of these songs are among the Talking Headiest of the Talking Heads' repertoire.

The Talking Heads love making generally fine albums with a couple absolute bangers on them forcing me to give it 4 stars every time

This one was a grower for sure. not the immediate funk of remain in light, but has become my second favorite from them. I zimbra, life during wartime, and cities are just amazing avant garde dance tunes. I've head them referred to as mutant disco and I couldn't agree more.

I have to listen to this record several more times. But after just two tracks I can already sense a tremendous depth in the songs. It's probably a record that you have to have.

This ain't no party; this ain't no disco; this ain't no foolin' around. Good album. Not my favorite Talking Heads album, but you can't beat some of these tunes: Heaven, Life in Wartime, Air.

Pretty classic TH, I give it 4 stars

Beautiful songs, easy to listen to but stylish and cool

I Zimbra, the opening track here, exemplifies everything Talking Heads really are and so much so than the few overplayed singles which made them famous. Tina Weymouth’s bass holds it all together. A dance track but with African rhythm. But not tribal, more artistic. Undeniably brilliant all the same. And then the pop sensibility kicks in on Mind and, despite the unwelcoming old style computer screen sleeve, we are confident progressive pop boundaries will be pushed. It’s edgy, more rhythmic than melodic but, in the main, pulsating. There are no hits per se here but the ensemble are creatively working towards what will be their eventual masterpiece, Remain in the Lighr. Essential listening. Cutting edge New York New Wave 1979.

Love some much on this album, but this lacks a little to put it in the category with Speaking in Tongues or Remain in Light. Still a great album. 4/5 Will listen again

A blend of showy dance music and some thought provoking lyricism. Dave Byrne’s quirky style may precede the band, but it doesn’t quite define it. The melodic chorus and sporadic guitar licks accompanying the chanting hooks are what serve the creation of an interesting and eclectic rock-blend. This is the type of music that you can’t not pay attention to, it’s too strange, and ultimately too intriguing to not give a chance, for better or worse. It’s definitely a better for me.

Super solid Talking Heads album. I always love David Byrne's vocal mixing on his projects. He's like a megaphone wielding orator screaming in the streets. The production is also very well done. Bringing us into the 80s pop scene.

Such a fun and funky, percussive group of songs discussing societal disfunction. First time listening to a Talking Heads album, and I automatically get why people say this album is a classic.

Its rhythmic experimentation is sheer genius...most of the songs just don't smack tho, except Life During Wartime.

classic Talking Heads funky music! david byrne's voice is very goofy sometimes and I appreciate that a lot! 4*

I am already a fan of the Talking Heads and love this album, so I'm happy to give it another listen today as it shows up on my rotation. Such a great album, and I know I'm way over-romanticizing the cultural context in which this album was written and recorded -- NYC in the late 70s and the people in the music and arts scene at the time -- but I still find it fun, so off I go. Back to this album itself: so many great tracks and we can hear the interesting direction the band was taking. Very cool rhythms, clever composition, and David Byrne finding his voice and style more and more. Superb album.

Really good album. I never really got into the Talking Heads, but this was a really fun album to listen to.

Love this band.

What a fun and quirky album. Sounds ahead of its time, has a big 80s feel, but its a 79 album. Often felt like listening to a Bowie album. Good stuff

A bit boring, but I like it. One of those albums where the singles stand out from the rest of the tracks. "Animals" was my favorite track that I hadn't heard before. "Life During Wartime" is such a great song and Pittsburgh shoutout so my civic pride rounds this album from 3.5 up to 4.

I feel like their music makes me want to move! I don’t always love David Byrne’s voice, but I liked the songs on the album.

i enjoyed this

Weird, quirky. Enjoyed it. Heaven, and Life During Wartime were the stand out tunes for me

Urgent spiky sounds with nice level of funky weirdness throughout

Excelent!

Overall enjoyed. Highlights were definitely I Zimbra and Mind. Didn’t love Air and Heaven but can’t put my finger on why.

Fantastic album from the Brian eno trilogy of talking heads albums.

Love it

not their best work, but still class

Неплохо, очень даже неплохо. 6/11 = 55%

Eclectic

Not sure why I’ve never listened to this Talking Heads record before? But I did and it’s good - the combo of African rhythms, art pop and post punk make for a satisfying listen.

I wouldn’t listen to this often but it is really cool and I like these TH/Brian eno records

I LOVE THE TALKING HEADS Now that that's out of the way, this album has eluded me as it doesn't contain their biggest hits. I love the experimental feel of the songs, quintessential Talking Heads/David Byrne, however, this album is a bit higher tempo which gives it a different feel. It is difficult to describe this music, but it's refreshing, especially for something made in 1979. It still holds up today. Not quite at the same level as their more popular albums. 3.5 stars rounded up

Fun album, really like it.

This is my favorite Talking Heads album. It is profoundly great. Brian Eno and David Byrne together for the third? time in a row comes with just the funkiest version of Post Punk one could've come with. This came out in 1979 and can hear the next several years of music erupting out of it. Honestly, have you ever tried to just sit still and listen to Cities? Impossible lest ye lack a single bit of soul in your body.

Great to hear this innovative band again, after many years.

Im a casual talking heads enjoyer. I dont recognize any songs on this album but im sure they are all delightful

They have grown on me over the years.

I like it

BASSY. That bass isn't walking he's strutting. I like the instrumentation on Life During War. I also enjoyed Heaven; it reminded me of Bowie, while Mind felt like something Daft Punk would have loved.

Weird but not boring

some real bangers here but side 2 is a bit of a drag

Decent album, enjoyed the variation in each song

Interesting.

probably one the first albums for me on the list where it sounds like genuine and original experimentation - that trippy jamming newness with originality - AND YET - they find where 'cutting edge' meets 'enjoyable' ... its a scintillating combination of tones and rythms and finds that certain happy groove that is constantly evolving without being tiring or annoying, (which is the Art of music... especially witht he number of albums i have put ont he 'never listen again pile' on the way to this one at number 325 in my 1001. aha - I am a third fo the way through this week. And there you go. Happy sounds from the Heads that Speak to me.... (and there are apparently better TH albums out there - bring it on)

It’s gives me that very nostalgic 70-80s rebel vibe but still pretty tame.

I like this one. I like air a lot 😁

First album! I liked it :) Especially the first song. Got a bit samey half way through, and Alexa cut it off stopping a timer, but it was either finished or nearly finished.

Not my thing but I enjoyed it

Fun times

Druuugggzzzz

Life during wartime and cities are great songs!

I Zimbra - 8/10 Mind - 8/10 Paper - 8/10 Cities - 8/10 Life During Wartime - 8/10 Memories Can’t Wait - 8/10 Air - 8/10 Heaven - 9/10 Animals - 8/10 Electric Guitar - 8/10 Drugs - 8/10 TOTAL - 89/110

Great album.

A really enjoyable listen, full of nervous energy and catchy tunes.

Incredible listen. Love all the different styles the Talking Heads put into each track

Other than a few hits, I haven't listened to a lot of TH, but this album showed me that this was a mistake. Love the lyrics, Byrne's voice, style and the unique-sounding music.

Great from start to finish. Real early 80s vibe

Solid Byrne boogie

Not sure if it's the best talking heads album

Big fan of Talking heads. This is a great album to start off with.

Good album but not sure if it’s one to hear before dying

Love the talking heads

Listened to this one for the first time like 2 days ago lol.

Better than their first album imo, more psychedelic. I really enjoyed this album to listen to.

Very experimental and bright. It's unique and different in its sound and it makes me feel like I'm in a dream. However, it doesn't seem very memorable. I love how the Talking Heads can make music that is odd in the right way. That's something a lot of bands can't do.

Great album.

3.9 Bops all around, a nice album to have in the background. Fave songs: I Zimbra, Life during Wartime, heaven

Interesting album, defenetly out of my comfort zone.

Ok, peters out at the end

At first glance I didn’t recognize any songs. Never knew the song was called Life During Wartime.

Good album. Definitely worth a relisten.

have listened to a few tracks from this before, namely "i zimbra" which i'm a fan of. rest of the album holds up to the same standard too which is good to hear, other highlights included "mind", "life during wartime", and "heaven".

Well, I'm going to be grading this one on sort of an unusual curve. This is the 4th Talking Heads album that I've gotten on this list, and it's my least favorite. It's honestly astounding how fast the first four Talking Heads albums came out, and how different they all are. I like the style of Remain in Light more than this album. It's not bad at all, and a lot of the little things that make this band good are here, it just doesn't hold up the way their other albums do for me. But, just because it leaves me feeling a bit flat doesn't mean that it's not a good album, it just doesn't meet the ridiculously high expectations that the Talking Heads set with their other albums 4/5

Fitting to the name, this whole album sounds very nervous, from the thin high-tempo guitars to David Byrne's panicked wail of a voice. That gives it a vibe I can't really compare to anything but which I inexplicably like. It's very fun and groovy as well as being weird and artsy, and those two things never feel like they're in conflict with each other. Definitely a band I'm excited to explore more. Best song: Life During Wartime

Saatanan hieno polyrytminen levy! 4/5

On se vaan kova. Life During Wartime on niiin tiukka. 4,5/5. Tämä tai RIL lienee bändin paras.

Talking Headsia aloin kuunnella vasta vuosi, pari sitten ja on kyllä hyvä bändi. Kuumeinen, taidokkaasti kömpelöntuntuinen ja kaiken kaikkiaan vaan kiinnostava levy.

Not my favourite Talking Heads album but I liked it

Can’t really go wrong with Talking Heads. I might be biased though, since Psycho Killer is one of my favourite songs

I think people either love / hate Talking Heads, not much in between. The good lady can't stand David Byrne - but how can you not love the strange rhythms and vocals. Is "nerd-punk" a genre?

Much better than anticipated. Cool sounds here worth a revisit.

Starts as a sort of jungle pop sound, with some chanting singing, which is an interesting way to start, but drew me in! The second song has Pink Floyd vibes, which I loved too. The rest of the album is classic TH, with the echo-y shout singing and fast tempo. Good album overall!

YES!!! Love talking heads. My second favorite new wave band next to Devo. Favorite album is Remain in light, but this one is up there. I like em all tho. Favorite tracks are Zimbra, mind, cities, animals, drugs. LFG

Disco for people with anxiety

Still crazy after all these years

This was a fun listen but overall it was missing that little bit of oomph to get it higher in my books. It is a four but probably only just

buen ritmo pero algunas canciones me dieron miedito haha me guarde AIR

I liked it but not amazing

I was writing songs I liked and I ended up writing all of them. Super catchy and Byrne’s voice is great.

Solid, fun album. Funky guitars and unique vocals. Animals, Wartime, and Cities are my favorites. Main drawback is you can't understand a damn thing this guy is saying.

The disco rhythms mixed into the rock instrumentation works really well. This album is a fun listen. Standouts: Mind; Life During Wartime;

I’m a big fan of the Talking Heads but this is not my favourite work of theirs. The album version of Life During Wartime really falls flat when compared to the live version, in my opinion. It’s still a good album though, I like it but expect more from them.

I GOT SOME GROCERIES SOME PEANUT BUTTER I liked this album Def vibed with it Especially the above lyrics and also "I've changed my hairstyle so many times now I don't know what I look like" It was just generally fun to listen to

Favorite Song: Drugs Super cool, very experimental feel. I can hear the influence on later music.

Rather like this. Like most of the albums here, I knew bits by the band but had never listened to anything deeper than what might appear on a playlist or on the radio. So the style was vaguely familiar, although the rhythms were bit of a surprise. Some clever stuff and it was easy to listen to and very pleasant. I'd probably listen to it again without a problems so it's an easy 4 stars.

I very much appreciate the sound that Talking Heads are able to create - it's so unique and distinguishable, and nobody pulls it off except for them. I feel like this album started out as a list of words that was given to David Byrne, and he just ran with it - really fun and weird lyrics, and the intricate, often syncopated rhythms just fit the songs so well. I hadn't even listened to this album before despite being a casual Talking Heads fan, but it's super fun. Fave tracks: I Zimbra, Life During Wartime, Electric Guitar, Drugs

Honestly, I really like Talking Heads' music (except for Once in a Lifetime) so I was expecting to like this as well. And I did ended up liking it but more than I'd expect.

One of my all-time favorite albums is Vivid by Living Colour. It took me 47 years to realize that my favorite song on that album was a cover of Talking Heads. Blew my mind.

I love how much of a role rhythm plays in Talking Heads' music. So many of these songs are built around tight, funky rhythms. But the music doesn't sound like traditional funk. They've got their own unique spin on it. This is an excellent album and has two classics, "Life During Wartime" and "Heaven" (which has great lyrics that read like a poem). Some songs can feel a little cold, which might be why I've listened to this album less than other Talking Heads albums. There are also a few songs on here that I'm more familiar with from the live album/movie "Stop Making Sense" and they come alive even more in that performance.

So much quirkiness in this band, I love it.

I really like this band and this record as well. Have it on vinyl and play it often. Kind of suprise to see it in the 1001, but hey !

I don't know how relevant it is to have so many Talking Heads albums in the challenge, but for sure, I won't complain. This one is my third favorite of the band and it's still incredible new wave music!

Really good and I love the classic talking heads sound

Talking Heads give me a reason to believe weird is good

This was my first time listening to any Talking Heads albums from start to finish, I really know their hits but I really haven't heard any songs from this album before. Couple things I noted -David Byrne's peculiar and sometimes eerie singing really is the driving force behind these songs, but I feel like sometimes this becomes too much in songs. -I really enjoy the instrumentals of the songs, I appreciated how they tried to make each song really unique to one each other, no song feels blended with one another; each track feels like a separate experience Notable tracks: I Zimbra, Air

Damn I wish the two days I had to kinda rush through these albums wasn’t for this one and Low end theory. Both have banger after banger. I’m surprised this isn’t one of the talking heads more acclaimed albums. Liked the grooves and guitar playing a lot on this one and of course the experimentation and David Byrne’s vocals are always cool. 👍: cities, memories, Heaven

Good album probably their weirdest and darkest

Brilliant

Very nice album

It's been a while but this is a classic and probably my fav Talking Heads album

fabulous

Objectively 4.5

Just the best dad music. Not my dad, of course, who's a Beatles guy - but someone's dad. Byrne is cool as fuck. Great rhythms. Great lyrics. Nice taste in suits. Rhythmic, angular, great life-affirming, funk-adjascent groove. I particularly like the section where Byrne says heaven is a place where nothing really happens. Dunno what it means but it feels like it means something good.

Not their best album, still very good

More Rock than I ever knew the Talking Heads could be. Some good tracks in there

Great album

The final Talking Heads album before The Big One. Truth be told, you can throw a dart at a board of the first five Talking Heads albums and land on a great one. That goes double for the Eno-produced ones. I love Live During Wartime, but the energy on the live version is undeniably better. The b-sides mostly sound like manic ramblings, which are actually captivating thanks to David Byrne's excellent delivery. Perhaps their most dissonant album. I like what it does and I've always liked how weird they are.

I love Talking Heads, not overly familiar with this one. Thought I didn't know any of the songs, but Phish had covered Cities. Byrne seems to put the wit in the back seat here. Good stuff.

Good album! Very funky and groovy.

Yup - so good. What a strong debut album.

Nothing quite like it. Hilarious and unsettling at the same time. Only (small) drawback is that thay managed to top themselves with Remain in Light in most ways. A great record.

Not the best Talking Heads album, but even an okay Talking Heads album is still amazing.

buen disco los amo talking heads 8.5/10

Love the Talking Heads, Life During Wartime is top 5 David Byrne. His influence on music is still being felt today. I listened to this one twice yesterday.

This was a really good album for me.

Very nice. I have weird fascination with 'Cities', it sounds so humorous to me which I quite like😆

One of the great ones.

Casi perfecto, toda la onda. Un par de temas medio fuera de lugar. Mejores canciones: 1- Life during Wartime 2- I Zimbra 3- Heaven

Awesome Talking Heads album that feels get a bit overshadowed by Remain in Light, unfortunately. I prefer this one over Remain in Light, since I find that the talking heads typical "groovy" sound is there is full form while remaining accessible. On Remain in Light, this sound is going overboard a little bit in the experimentation in my opinion. Incredible songs here like "I Zimbra", "Cities" & "Heaven" are really representative of the genius of Talking Heads. FUNKY 8,8/10

Love this band Love how this has the rub of Fela Kuti and moving towards the next albums Some of my favourite tracks … even if the Stop Making Sense live versions are wven better in my ears Why go to college …

I've always been a fan of Talking Heads but never spent much time with this album. I Zimbra sets the mood, Life During Wartime sounds eerily like the Bunnings theme song, and Dancing for Money is a trip. Overall feels just as relevant today.

Maybe my favorite talking heads album? It is catchy and accessible yet its not afraid to go out there either. For now 4 stars but might grow honestly.

This is my favourite Talking Heads album. The pure energy of I Zimbra announcing the arrival of the new Taliking Heads to the world as one of the first purveyers of true African Rhythms in rock music. This would reach its zenith on the next release Remain in Light. But this album I think better combines their punky, nervous new wave roots with the poly rhythms that they would become famous for. Filled with great songs from beginiing to end. My only gripe is the mastering of my somwhere close to original Canadian viny is a little thin and shrill at times. It doesn't allow those gorgeous rhythms space enough to breath the way they do on Remain in Light. 4.5 stars

another weird talking heads album

First time listening. Good album, enjoyed listening to it!

Loved it for the first 3/4 before it started to drag a bit, but never exactly got boring. Super high energy, quirky, head bobbing music and felt like a more organic and stripped back version of remain in light. The super tight choppy slap echo rhythms were my favorite part of the whole album, def plenty to learn here as a musician. Overall a great listen with a few tracks I was indifferent to.

The third Talking Heads album I've had and the only I've enjoyed. It's fucking weird and I actually enjoy it. Dunno why I like this over their other stuff, but this one is just weird enough that I like it. Not enough to say that I will regularly listen to the Talking Heads, but enough find it passable from them.

legal legal bem grooviezao

I really liked this album. It felt tight, groovy, funky, glamorous, and fun. It felt a little Bowie-esque. All of the tracks were extremely cohesive and let my mind imagine a world of fun characters to go along with the antics of the lyrics. In true Talking Heads fashion, the lyrics had a sense of humor, heart, and insight. Favorite Tracks: 1) I, Zimbra 2) Mind 3) Life During Wartime 4) Memories Can’t Wait 5) Heaven 6) Drugs 7) Electric Guitar Honorable mention: Air

i'd like to find the person who first told David Byrne he could sing, and then shake that person by the hand

A transitionary album for Talking Heads and just barely my least favorite of their first 5.

Heaven is such a beautiful song in such a great album. Oslid stuff

Enjoyed this, blends together a little but good music

If David Bowie was playing a character from Mars, Talking Heads are playing characters (and music) from planets that haven't received actual names yet. Super fun, weirdly, oddly funky. Favorite tracks: "Life During Wartime", "Heaven", "Animals"

Another album by Talking Heads. Good stuff as usual in my opinion. Saved tracks: Paper, Cities, Life During Wartime, Memories Can’t Wait, Heaven

Some real highlights on this album and I'll never get sick of the Talking Heads, but it falls just shy of a 5/5 album for me.

This reminds me of a very specific time so a biased 4

Felt way ahead of its time for 1979, eccentric music and lyrics but in a modern sounding way, really good

the talking heads - fear of music (1979) notes - second talking heads album that i’ve reviewed - this one accentuates the things that i liked about the first and tones down the stuff i didn’t enjoy - released 1 year after the other one - the guitar interplay on this is great! - david byrnes delivery seems a but more measured and intentional on this one - produced by brian eno fav song - cities - like the warped piano, lyrics and vocal performance - Bonus shout out to the song animals least fav - Electric guitar - I liked the bass and some of the weird sounds but the song itself was meh 4/5

Always fun to listen to Talking Heads. Their funky signature style gets you dancing every time.

Jag skulle aldrig vara rädd för denna musik!!

Oh. this is the talking heads. ~ psycho killer. qu'est-ce que c'est bah bah bah bah bah abah bah bahab ah ~

Would be a 5 but there are some strange, classic TH tunes on this one. Standouts are I Zimbra, Cities & Life During Wartime, which are all time songs.

Not my favorite talking head but life in wartime elevated

Good melodies and good beats. Need to finish listening.

Sums up much of what I love about Talking Heads. Rhythmic, manic, anxiety inducing, funky in parts. Produced by Brian Eno in possibly my favorite period of his career, having just worked with Bowie on his Berlin trilogy. Standout track "Life during wartime"

4.0 - It's David Byrne and Brian Eno so of course it's epic, right? For the better part of this week I bopped my head along, feeling the rhythms and noting the subtle studio quirks: on "Mind" Byrne's grunt fades seamlessly into a guitar solo, there's an extended outro on "Memories Can't Wait" that's awesome, and I love the ambient paranoia of "Drugs"...Still, the music won't burrow into my guts. Some of it sounds like "And She Was", some of it sounds like Blues Brothers ("Cities"). Mostly I hear the advent of NY punk, which I'm getting (kinda sorta) sick of?

fabulouussssssssssssssss 8/10

Funky shit funky shit catchy choruses

Probably the TH record I'm least familiar with although have always loved cities. Heaven is an obvious five star tune too. Overall somewhat darker offering.

Isang pagdiriwang.

Good variety of sounds and ideas, very creative band with undoubted talent

I wasn't expecting this to be so upbeat and musical.

Very nice. Familiar with it.

Cities is a real bop. The Talking Heads really lean into this funk disco sound on the open tracks on this album. Life During Wartime is rad.

This album still has David Byrne's oddities and creativity, but I would say this is a more accessible Talking Heads album that tones down some of his more "out there" ideas. The last two songs are definitely where he lets loose, leading up to that it's a bit more of a standard alternative rock album.

Super interesting album. Not great for background music or relaxing to. More for when you want to actually listen to some music and let your thoughts and emotions roam around a little.

Interesting, but I think their other work is better. Great to hear where the later sounds started.

I feel like I love pretty much anything Brian Eno works on. This album was a very solid surprise to me.
