Reviews (page 13 of 14)
Didn't really vibe with it. Should give it another shot though.
i feel like a bad art gay giving this a 2 but these things happen
THIS ALBUM IS GOOFY LMAO
One of my favorite bands honestly, but this album could easily not be in this list, especially when they have better ones that weren’t included. They were barely getting started with letting the creativity flow here.
Ok
If there's one thing that will prevent me from completing this list it's the volume of talking heads records punctuating it like badly used apostrophe(')s. That being said, this is the most (only) listenable of theirs I've heard so far. A band and record I should like, but just don't/can't; lyrically it's just too poorly written.
Eh
Whatever
I get it - it was groundbreaking for its time, but it’s too goofy for me.
its al a bit the same sound and gets boring quickly
Verspielt, bisschen funky, erinnert mich manchmal ein bisschen an Falco. Nervt mich stellenweise ein wenig. Mir fehlt der Punch.
70s New Wave. Just kind of banal and repetitive. Only like Psycho -killer.
We’ve had our one album from these guys. David Byrne, the Elvis Costello of the US new wave movement is way too up himself to be taken seriously. Nowhere near as talented as his inflated ego would tell you, most of his crap is hidden by a stupendous band. Meanwhile he treats people like garbage and tells them he’s diagnosed himself with autism so he’s allowed to act like a arsehole. Fuck right off. And when you get there fuck off again. One Talking Heads album gives you the idea. One or two good to great songs. The rest is just onanistic nonsense. Would much rather Stop Making Sense or a greatest hits than this. Psycho Killer is a good song. The only good one on the album. Pfft.
Pretty certain I'd follow David Byrne anywhere, The Book I Read was mostly ululating—and saved to Liked Songs
I hate the vocal
Can't stand the voice
It’s hard to imagine this coexisting with Saturday Night Fever. Like, who walked into a record store and had to have this? Who is it for? These all sound the same. Psycho Killer is cool, but it's all the same otherwise.
It may be lynching talk but I've never seen talking heads as more than a novelty band. Given credibility by the scarcity of their albums and that there are one or 2 songs per album that are great. Such as psycho killer on this album. Sonically quite interesting but byrnes voice is annoying to the point of distraction
Some good instrumentation, but cannot look past his just irritating voice. Makes most of the tracks unbearable to listen to despite the potential for a few decent songs. Used to think Psycho Killer was a decent track but now all I hear is his ridiculous voice. 2/5
Ok but all sounded very samey apart from Psycho Killer
hurts my head to listen to why does he sound like that i think I'm gonna have an aneurysm
Not for me, nothing caught me
The music gets a plus for being upbeat, but man these vocals suck. I think Talking Heads might have been one of those bands you had to be around to get because I’m not seeing what everyone else is.
Really liked the music, disliked the vocals quite a bit. I usually like the alternative singers like this, but it didn't have anything special going for it. Inspired me to listen to the B-52s
Psycho Killer is the big hit from this one. The rest were fine, but again vocals lack.
I don't dislike it but I also don't really like it? His voice really starts to annoy me. But can't help but jam to psycho killer.
Talking Heads are weird. I like 'em, but this album isn't their best work. It gets old pretty fast.
I liked the hit single, but not really anything else.
So passé. Why are we still idolizing people like him?
I think I just don’t like the Talking Heads. I have an extra star because Psycho Killer is on this album
Too slow.
It's just not for me. They are clearly talented, but the vocals really rub me the wrong way.
not terrible, but not me.
Nope, I don’t like it. Can’t really tell you why. I think it’s his voice. Not a talking heads fan. I’ve tried three different times now, and my feelings have not changed.
Not the greatest debut album, hasn’t aged well. Psycho Killer the only stand out track
I really do not love Talking Heads. The whole vibe of the music feels a bit goofy, a little off to me, but not in a way that I can jive with. I don't love David Byrne's voice, which is very distinctive but comes across to me as comical. Even "Psycho Killer," a song that I have heard a lot and find myself singing, when I really listen to it, I don't love it. Talking Heads is just not for me, but I respect that clearly they've had a significant musical impact and people do quite love it.
Yeah... this is forgettable garbage
Weird and I didn't really pay attention
I was expecting a lot more from this.it sounds like a bunch of B side demos with psycho killer thrown in. I really don't like his voice either. Maybe this is where my dislike of post punk stems from? Anyway, a few good moments at the tail end. 2/5
Psycho killer is a banger but not for me the rest of it.
2.5
I now understand why I never became a Talking Heads fan. Don't get me wrong I love the singles they banged out in the late 70's and 80's, but i never scratched below the surface and listened to an album in full until starting this 1001 journey. Psycho Killer is the banger, the rest is not. Maybe i need to listen to them more to appreciatethe finer details of their work, but i probably won't.
Quite boring, psycho killer is good obviously, but the rest is kind of meh
Favorite tracks: Tentative Decisions, Psycho Killer Overall I can't help but to feel a little bored with this album. It feels like they're trying to cater to too many genres and end up sounding a bit generic because of it. There are definitely some fun and funky elements to some of these songs, but I just can't get behind the vocalist, who is largely quiet and monotone but tries to make up for it with random scatting.
Pretty chill vibes, kinda zoned out and did some "work" to this, also my first one! Good background music.
Psycho killer was good, rest not really my jam
Psycho killer excellent, every other song is mediocre
The music is interesting, generally upbeat with a positive tone. The vocals however, sound as if Mick Jagger had a smoother voice and wanted to add some Alt-Pop to his catalog. This album falls under that category for me of those who try to sound weird or different for the sake of just being different. Which is fine - but they had to listen back to these vocals and all should have come to the same conclusion that - it sucks. Sounds like a direct influence on modern bands such as The Flaming Lips, with good music and a vocalist that just wants to destroy the tracks to be a 'seen' frontman. Some vocalists are blatantly high on their own supply. If they were unknown and playing a show at an establishment I happened to be at, I'd leave in about 3 songs.
This is the first album generated for me! First song was great, then it felt like filler until No Compassion woke me back up. Psycho killer is obviously a classic, Pulled up is a grower bop.
Please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please let this be the last Talking Heads album on this list.
Liked some of it but not for me. Doubt I’d go back to it.
As with the previous Talking Heads album this process has thrown up, David Byrne’s stylised vocals for a full album is just too much. Psycho killer and first week/last week aside from the tracks generally blur into one for me.
This is a bizarre album. Its standout track is “Psycho Killer” - which is a song which does not fit the overall vibe of the album (which is quite… happy? For want of a better word). It also makes you wait for said standout track - it finally appears as the penultimate song on the album. By the time I got there, I had lost interest.
Not for me. Singing style grated on me.
No. Nope. No thank you.
This is the second Talking Heads album that has been presented on this list, and I must say, it is two too many, so it gets a two. I have discovered I really don't care for them. A somewhat generous 2.
More of the same drivel from Talking Heads that didn't impress when listening to "Remain in Light" album. The saving grace here was the song "Psycho Killer" which was immediately recognized and lightly mumbled along to especially during the "Psycho Kill-UR" pronunciation. AS it really isn't my music, this will get a similar 2/5 as their previous album in the generator.
Made for decent background music, but nothing too exciting. I kind of liked the first track had a little upbeat ska like feel to it at the beginning. After that the album got a little too synth pop 80s for my tastes.
I didn't love it.
Not my thing
"Yes, we listened to Modern Lovers and Television. How can you tell?"
Who is it has a nice sound minus vocals. No compassion has a cool break around the 3.30 mark. Do not vibe with the vocals at all, which sucks because some of the instrumentation isn’t half bad.
I liked three songs off this album. Gotta be honest, not great.
Fav songs: New Feeling; Psycho Killer I love how weird TH are and some of my forever favorite songs are by them. This is a good, solid debut but there is better TH. I'm not sure it's absolutely necessary to listen this particular album but I won't say it shouldn't be on the either.
Heard it before. I will be honest, this album is kinda boring except for 3 songs (No Compassion, Psycho Killer, Pulled Up) 2/5
flemme de fou
2.5 - not bad
my least favorite of the first 5 Talking Heads albums. not necessarily bad, and Psycho Killer is a really iconic and important song, but flat and a bit underdeveloped compared to their later work deserves to be one of the 1001? eh they have 4 albums on the list. the argument for it is there, but the other 3 albums i would leave on before this. so no. /shrug
Psycho killer still goes hard but the rest of the album is just okay
⭐️⭐️✨/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I know Talking Heads and their history but haven't listened to full albums. There debut was not at all what I expected and not something I enjoyed much either. It is so boring, almost lifeless sounding. Some songs sound like a very bad David Bowie impression. However, Psycho Killer is 1000% better than anything else on here! That song is awesome.
approachable and easily enjoyable but not all that interesting
Aside from Psycho Killer there really isnt much in this album that is for me. A lot of the songs sound similar and are sprinkled with weird for the sake of weird. Just not that enjoyable to listen to, at least for me.
Nothing for me
Bit too unconventional and quirky for me, has the foundation of something of really like but feels too all over the place
Couldn't finish it
#600. It's exactly what you'd expect from a Talking Heads album. 1 or 2 good songs accompanied by a lot of weird. 2/5: meh [I wonder if anyone will notice i just copied and pasted this review four times?]
Like kje Talking Heads, syns Psycho Killer e irriterande
This really seems like the kind of album I would like. '77-era punk. NYC art-school nonsense. The playing is just so stupid, and even at this early stage David Byrne is insufferable.
Lekkere dansmuziek I guess, voor de tijd, maar nee, niet voor mij
Psycho Killer is iconic, but the rest of the album was disappointing 70s rock.
Definitely not my favourite album. In fact a day later the only song that has any resonance is Psycho Killer.
I only knew Psycho Killer beforehand and honestly listening to this album gave me a lot of context into their music style. It was cool to understand, but I didn’t particularly like it.
Didnt like it at all
i just don't like em
Should have renamed their band to the 'Talking Asses' judging by the sheer amount of incoherent, infantile lyrics. I feel like the singer is singing at me like I'm a toddler in kindergarten. It's a damn shame because the instrumentals are good, funky even, but if I have to hear this guy do one more na na na na~ or Oh Oh OH~...
Not their best.
I just don't care for Talking Heads. I don't get it.
Sånn irriterende kul 70-tallsmusikk
Not really my taste
The rhythm section is on fire and doing lots of really interesting things. The songs themselves are largely unmemorable. Really the only exception is Psycho Killer, which is the only song most everyone knows from this album. Going with 2 stars. Would be 1 star, but the rhythm section had some really cool things going, so I'm giving them an extra star.
Country pub, jukebox, 80s guitar, warm. Not a genre I'm into
Very samey. While "Psycho Killer" is a great song, the rest of the album sounded like one song which was way too long.
Psycho killer is great but the rest just annoys me
Happy Day / 1 Shit 5. Who is it? / 1 Shit 6. No Compassion / 1 Shit 7. The Book I Read / 2 I like the intro until he starts singing 8. Don't Worry About the Government / 1 Shit 9. First Week/Last Week / 1 Shit 10. Psycho killer / 3,5 Catchy, maar je bent het ook gauw weer zat 11. Pulled up / 2 Funny but shit 12. Love -> Building on Fire / 2 Somewhat catchy but still shit 13. I wish you wouldn't Say that / 1 Repetitive shit 14. I Feel it In my Heart / 2,5 Nice instrumentation, vocals shit 15. Sugar on my Tongue / 2,5 I like that he doesn't sing as much, still shit
Massively out of step with what you expect from 1977 and that has to be applauded, but having heard later TH you can’t help hearing the elements that aren’t there yet. It is a bit middling overall.
Not really all that into this album. Didn’t really like the vocal style. The instrumentation was alright, but didn’t stick out at me as all that interesting. Probably like a 4 or a 4.5/10
Starts as funky white music, and doesn't really ever achieve that. This feels like they've watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show and tried making that into an album, badly.
not a fan
Album art:4
Refer to my review of fear of music. 2 stars
1 good track, still don't like this man's voice.
Tbh did not like this. Sounded too quiet and washed out. 2!
This is the third album I've heard from them, and I just don't get the appeal. The instrumentals are alright, but the vocals are terrible.
6/10 Highlights: Psycho Killer
These guys kind of suck ngl
Wow, David Bryne's voice is fucking grating at times man... album did nothing for me. Better came from Talking Heads after (if I remember correctly)
Everyone loves Talking Heads and Byrne, but I can’t get into it and it’s not my thing. Psycho Killer is a bright spot for me but only because I’ve heard it so many times.
Talking Heads 77 was weird back then and is still weird. Very one sound, and only one hit - but Psycho Chicken is a good one. (OK, Chicken is the Boston band The Fools cover version, which made it big in the local area.) As you know, this band gets better, way better. L = (1.5*s) which is generous due to 2 G&Ts J = (1.7*s) David, you’re singing too much but saying anything.
The song about his building was pretty funny but otherwise the album was not my thing. Funny, but just not my thing
I like Psycho Killer but otherwise not a big fan.
Not a huge talking heads fan. His jacket doesn’t fit.
2 - Never really cared for Talking Heads. Still don't.
I have a mostly hate-hate relationship with the Talking Heads. There are maybe 2 songs of theirs I genuinely enjoy. I feel like I should like them more and I have really tried to like them more, but I just don't. New Feeling was pretty good. Parts of No Compassion sound like a first draft for Wild Wild Life. I'm not sure why so many people love Psycho Killer, it's not bad, but it's not that great. Everything else ranges from mid to meh. 72 albums so far, this is the third Talking Heads album I've gotten. For whoever is angry with me, I'm sorry! OK?!
I started with "Psycho Killer" and then went back to the start and for a brief moment this registered much better than their #96 "Fear of Music" but I'm now through this and: Nope. Same cringe, simultaneously stilted and exalted, often intolerable vocals, just rather painful. With the video in mind of Byrne rehearsing dumb dance moves and then the Big Suit, I guess, this is all very much on purpose, but I need someone to explain the joke to me. Or, on second thought, don't. [...] Rating day. the analytical side of brain responds favourably do the guitar work here, but the sum of it all? It's better than "Fear of Music" but this album falls into the pattern of late 70ies white people with their forced attempts at deconstructing Rock just to make shit funk instead. Which sucks.
This didn’t click with me much , faded into back ground although psycho killer is a classic
The best song on the album was Psycho Killer. I didn't think the rest of the songs weren't as good unfortunately
Psycho Killer is great. The rest of the album is all kind of... the same? So I will give this one a 2.5 and round down.
This is okay. I don't love the vocals.
There are moments of music for these guys that I really like. But then there is a lot of junk around it and the singer is just terrible, should have found a career on a children's tv show or something.
Not a band i was ever keen on. Psycho Killer apart, this doesn't do much for me.
2.5/3 Standout tracks: - Don't Worry About The Government - 3.5/5 - Psycho Killer - 4.5/5
Not a fan of talking heads. I find it quite annoying
Wouldnt listen to anything other than psycho killer again
Definitely the worst Talking Head album on this list. Nothing was working, they didn't find the groove yet, vocal sounded terrible, it was boring and repulsive. I had hard time trying to listen to side a, not much better on side b. I guess one more star for the name, but it feels wrong.
Talking heads are not really my thing but I can still vibe to some of their songs. Wouldn't relisten to the entire thing.
Not my fave
Not very interesting, I don’t see the importance of them other than creating Psycho Killer and Burning Down the House Voice cut: Psycho Killer
Clearly getting on in years. Typical early Talking Heads sound that still sounds quite simple and develops little dynamics.
Another situation where I don't like the vocals. It's quirky and tolerable at times, but I can't listen to this more than once a year. I can see why Psycho Killer was the hit. It is the best song on the album. 2
2.5/5 no soy muy fan de talking heada
When his voice gets nasally, this gets bad. When it's not nasally, it's still not good, but it no longer is horrible. His vocal skill is just not particularly good at all. And the rest of the music doesn't really do much to hide or enhance it. Psycho Killer manages to catch some magic. There are some bad moments, but it's like the singing figures itself out, while the musicians find a fun groove for the whole song. Alright. The band does figure something out after Psycho Killer, and the album is at least tolerable from that point on. Favorite Song(s): Psycho Killer
This album makes me mad, but more because of how people speak about it as being so zany and unique but like, is it?? It's got great songs for sure like Psycho Killer and No Compassion but besides that it just feels like the same or less decent funky new wave song played over and over again and none of them interest me, they barely do something for me because they all sound basically the same (or worse in the case of Don't Worry About the Goverment). I think my frustration is partly how people talk about Talking Heads as the quirkiest band around (they aren't tbh) but legit you could be hearing a better version of Talking Heads 77 in the shape of The Contortions' Buy or Liquid Liquid's Optimo or really a myriad of bands that did this sound but better and crazier. This was such a disappointment. A competent album sure but not anything I could care for even within my favorite music.
I found this album a bit boring. Psycho Killer is a strong track but the rest just feels like filler to me. Not my vibe
Meh, only thing I remember is that Psycho Killer is on it. Not horrible though
yeah - nah... more nah really, with sometimes yeah... background music really
Disappointing, most songs were not pleasant to listen to and the lyrics didn't make up for it.
Not bad but definitely much prefer Stop Making Sense. My goodness his voice is insufferable on Happy Day, haha. Really liked the bass and beat of No Compassion. "They say compassion is a virtue, but I don't have the time." LOVE that. Psycho Killer a treat of course. Quite liked Pulled Up.
This is a one star album until Psycho Killer lifts it up to 2 stars or D+.
Пара лютейших имб но остальное не очень круто клас
Malo naporan
You hear the greatness, but it doesn't do anything for me.
The production is fun. Listening to David Byrne is kind of like listening to a super enthused Saturday morning cartoons character. It's good in small doses, but I don't think I'd want to sit through this album on a regular basis. A bit rough around the edges for a debut. Some bangers on here. It would be a better instrumental album.
I only just had a Talking Heads album a few days ago... Still shite 2 ⭐️
man, i thought i’d like this, but it didn’t do anything for me. the whole album felt like filler songs if that makes sense. i did like the popular one, “psycho killer”, though. this definitely made me want to check out some of their other stuff though. i have a feeling they have better albums
This one kind of passed me by. I listened through the whole album, but nothing really grabbed me apart from Psycho Killer, which is undoubtedly a great song. I was a bit surprised by how underwhelmed I felt overall, as I went in expecting one of those albums where you know the big single, and then the rest turns out to be just as good. I’ve also enjoyed other work by David Byrne, which made it even more surprising that this didn’t resonate with me. Perhaps it’s one of those cases where the band was still finding their footing, or maybe it’s just not my taste. Standout Song: Psycho Killer (Fa-fa-fa-fa, fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa) Score: 2/5 (Fa-fa-fa-fa, fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa)
other than Psycho Killer, nothing stood out on this album for me. Sounded like bog standard late-70s new wave. I couldn't hear what the fuss was about
Psycho Killer + a bunch of very skippable songs.
Not as good as I expected. I enjoy talking head hits, and had planned to listen to them more, but this somewhat disappointed
Fun, but can’t really listen to this all the way thru
Everything that David Byrne produces somehow misses me. I know he's like some brilliant thought leader and 1001 keeps trying to get me to like his music, but I just don't and can't.
Four TH albums on this list and apparently they were very influential for a bunch of bands I like....but I just can't get into them. The best thing I can say about them is that the songs aren't slow and boring. So at least they have that going for them.
En tykännyt laulajan äänestä, en tykännyt sanoista, joten ei kovin nautinnollinen kuuntelu. Jotkut kappaleet ihan ok, mutta se nyt ei kauheasti heilauta.
The second album I got in a row with bad singing and mediocre music. This album is pretty bad and I'm a little shocked by the amount of people that like it.
That's some...unique vibrato... 2/5
I already know and love "Psycho Killer" but didn't find much else I really liked even near to that level on this album. There were a few other bright spots that might grow on me maybe. I think though overall this is not really my thing genre wise, and this album isn't doing much to change that for me.
Unfortunately, this exercise has made me realize I'm only a fan of Talking Heads hits. Maybe this would inch up in my estimation with repeated listenings, but felt quirky in a way that wasn't really enjoyable. Except for Psycho Killer.
blöd.
Not as averse to Talking Heads as I used to be but this still started to wear on me. Not a fan
Nice in places
its a lot better than their third album, at least i can tell someone is having fun YNN

An intereresting album in many ways. I understand why I have only heard one of their songs before since they have a different sound through out the album. Not my kind of music and not something I will listen to again.
Found a couple songs just annoying. Maybe I was just not in the mood, but not a fan.
Couldn’t really get into this one. Most songs just grated after a while
Definitely not my favorite music
I guess I don't like the Talking Heads
2,4
The Talking Heads belong to a time I was never a part of. Honestly the whole thing feels dated and simple
A decent listen but to be honest they have much better
First listen Saved 4/11 Top track: Psycho Killer
got bored of it real quick
Meh.
Not for me! I respect the bands love for buildings and the importance of friendship though.
Yeah... this album isn't for me...
This was more annoying than the other Talking Heads album thats on this list.
I know I should like Talking Heads and in many ways I do. I like Stop Making Sense, Speaking In Tongues, Remain in Light but not this one. There's just something unbearably whiny about his voice like he's trying to sing a little higher than he can comfortably manage.
David Byrne's singing is like a grown child having a breakdown. Lyrics are simplistic and without nuance. Ironically their big hit Psycho Killer does rhyme, but mostly they cannot be concerned with rhyming. There seems to be one rule in David's song writing...if it's good once, it's even better twice. The repetition can be distracting, especially when you realize that without it, there just isn't much material. Interestingly, if you slowed down their signature beat, it would sound a lot like reggae.
Album 1/1001 - 28/7/24 Physco Killer = iconic track 5/5 Revisit Album - no, just didn’t do it for me I’m afraid.
Musically almost funky or groovy. Of course "Psycho Killer" stands out. But even on that song the voice is just annoying! 🙉
Mannnnnn that was hard. I love talking heads and what they did for music and all the artists I love. But this was an annoying album.
Not a lover of the voice, a bit dated now. Listened with my daughter. She was not impressed
I am sure my rating here is going to be too harsh. I normally am a fan of the quirky vocals and all that, but today was just a bad day and didn't have the Patience to deal with this. For my purposes only for finding albums to re-listen to, I'm giving it a fraction of a point that I can sort by. Favorite track "Psycho Killer" 2.2/5
I listened. Still do not like the singing. at all.
Nicht so mein Ding
better than all the others before it
My favorite TH record, but that’s not saying much.
Is it okay that I just don't like the Talking Heads that much? Am I going to have my cool card revoked? David Byrne's wailing just grates on me. Sorry not sorry.
A bit repetitive by the end
first song is nice. his voice is annoying i shouldve probably paid attention to the lyrics huh,,,,,lmao. sorry. wasnt in the mood to listen to new music tbh. im forcing myself rn so.. 2
Bored, aged and doesn't age well. Not for me.
I appreciate, rather than like, Talking Heads it seems
Psycho Killer is an incredible song. But every other track on this record was pretty cringe. However, this motivated me to make more of my music and care less about the quality of it or how it might come off to others. I'd be so embarrassed to share this record if it were mine, and yet, it's a timeless classic. Go figure.
Oh man. That's way too much David Byrne in 1 dose for me.
There's a world music meets funk sort of thing going on here, coming out of the new wave-ish/punk-ish world. Some odd-ish vocal deliveries. This album is still pretty unique in 2024. I can only imagine how innovative it must have seemed in 1977. I don't really care for it too much. Psycho Killer is alright. 2/5 May 12 2024
Sounds more modern than it is, I would not have put this as a 1977 release. Music is fine, doesn't do much for me. Favourite track: No Compassion.
Slogged through the first 2/3 of the album, the last 1/3 of the album was great.
still don't get talking heads. never thought i'd give an incubus record a 5 star and talking heads almost completely 2's across the board
A lot of same same tunes, Psycho Killer the standout.
Except for psycho killer, this all went in one ear and out the next
LCD Soundsystem covering this album is Tom's dream concert
Eh
Heureusement qu'il y a psycho killer! Ils sont chiants quand ils veulent.
Onore imperituro a Byrne e ai Talking Heads, ma in quest'album emerge solo Psycho Killer.
The music itself is fine, but I just can't stand the singer. Not an album I would choose to listen to again. 2/5
I wanted to like this more.
I wanted to like it. I liked some of the music, but it was repetitive, and the singing was annoying.
I like this a little less than the other "Talking Heads" submission. I think they got better as they got out of the disco era, which influenced the percussion a lot.
Nah
not their best ..(.
Enjoyed it more than I expected - made Psychokiller make more sense than it ever did before
A bit too arty farty.
This was goofy as fuck. It felt like I was listening to a random silly album and Spotify accidentally added Psycho Killer to the queue. It’s not like Psycho Killer is an island tho, David Byrne really tried the gibberish stuff on a bunch of these songs and was like “I just know one of em’s gonna make it work”
First week was such a shit song lmao. Psycho killer has been a favorite song of mine since they sang it in IASIP. The rest of the album was really not memorable at all. Don’t worry about the government was a troll song tho.
Just not very good is it. Post-punk in general is quite awful, these ones are at least musically competent so it's not an outright assault on your hearing. Don't make it good tho. Gets an extra half a star for Psycho Killer verging on being decent.
Not my cup of tea. It's a bit better than the usual post punk new wave garbage, but it's still not doing nearly enough for me.
sehr alt
Psycho killer kyl kova
not especailly into it
El point destacado de la wikipedia es "The single "Psycho Killer" reached number 92 on the Billboard Hot 100." 93 de 100 en el 77. Top 1001 albums noseque i me posen esto. De locos. Jueguen Metroid
This wasn't spectacular, but it wasn't bad. It was like hearing a garage band in high school, just some dudes having fun playing instruments, creating little ditties and guitar licks, and making noises with their mouth. I'm happy to have heard it since I know Talking Heads are a foundational influence to some of the artists I know and love now (c.2024), but I don't really see revisiting this album again.
Liked it at first, upbeat, was in the mood for it. But got annoying after a while.
I've heard better stuff in this genre so l couldn't really care for the album (excpt psyco killer, that one is a MASTERPIESE). HOWERE l undrestand without Talking Heads and their impact some of my favorite music wouldn't have been made so i'm glad i experienced listening to Talking Heads's first album although i don't wanna experince it again. The highlights : 3.Tentative dicasions : the hook/chourse part sucks ( girs and boys blah blah blah) rest is good 10.psyco killer : YOU START A CONVERSION YOU CAN'T EVEN FINISH, YOU TALK A LOT BUT YOU'RE NOT SAYING ANYTHING , WHEN I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY??? MY LIPS ARE SEALED!!! SAY SOMETHING ONCE, WHY SAY IT AGAIN?? 10/10
Couldn’t get through it
The second TH album I've listened to, I guess they are just not for me. Couple of ok tunes but it mostly just passes me by.
Talking Heads 77 is too new wave for me. Some of the music hits a nice groove, there are decent elements of funk in there, but the vocals aren't my thing, never have been across the genre, and bring it down wholly. Just a style that's somewhere between nonchalant and whimsically ironic, no thanks. No Compassion probably the high point of an album I didn't mind listening to (First Week/Last Week also decent) just didn't enjoy. 2?
Continuing to struggle to enjoy this album
Musically the album was fine but the singer could have done with some lessons.
Heel irritante muziek
arty strange vocals
Un 4
Very funky, more than I thought Talking Heads would be. Otherwise, it was.. _too much_ Talking Heads. Very monotonous. And I'm probably the only odd duck that doesn't like Psycho Killer.
Don't Worry About the Government and Psycho Killer are pretty good. The rest of the album is bland alt rock; not as good as some of their later stuff.
I really want to like the Talking Heads. This is my second album I've received from them. With the first album I was on the fence - and with this being their (maybe?) most acclaimed album, I don't think this band is for me. I love some of their ideas, some of the goofy bits of their music I enjoy. But it gets boring/old and then borders on annoying to me. Might be mostly the vocals that get on my nerves. I'm not sure. I don't think I'm going to completely give up on them like some bands I've written off after a full album or two. But it definitely hasn't "clicked" yet and I'm sure if it ever will.
I’ve largely been an avid despise of Talking Heads, but I can’t say I’ve ever sat down and given them a shot. I’m glad I did, but I can confirm that I don’t hate them — I just can’t find anything to like. I’m sure it was good at the time, but there’s nothing here for me.
Geht so. Nicht mein Geschmack
Was different. Didn’t really take. Will have to give it more listens
This is certainly Talking Heads in 1977. They haven’t quite found their footing yet.
I personally consider that this album lacks substance, it failed to tell me anything and it was majorly an indifferent listen. Best songs to me were "Psycho Killer" and "Pull up". There are no painful features in the project either. Expected Marc rating: 3.
Vaya pal d'àlbum. Totes les cançons sonen igual
There are all the foundations of what make the talking heads great throughout the years and it’s well produced but I think there is just some magic missing. I think the weird punk influence and odd instrumentation that create the grooves are missing if I had to guess. Well produced but the songs just don’t have the same hitting quality for me as subsequent records.
Annoying and overrated. Jeez.
I should recognize some of these pieces because I was 5, but I don’t. I only recognize the sound of their voices for songs produced in the 80’s. I had no idea Talking Heads was around before I heard them on the radio. “Don’t Worry About the Government” makes me think I could write a random song. It has the feel of a fun, thoughtless, babble that you might sing around the house, putting the words of what you are currently and actively doing into a tune that will be forgotten. A piggyback song of sorts. But it made it into this album.
Probably the most 2/5 album on this list
Psycho Killer was the only song I really liked.
Whenever we get a Talking Heads album I think of the adoring way Zach from Gilmore Girls says “David Byrne is a freak”. All respect to the freaks out there making weirdo art but this just didn’t do anything for me. Not particularly fun or interesting to listen to, just odd.
Could not wait for this one to end. Only redeeming song is Psycho Killer, obviously.
W E A K
The rest of the music isn't nearly good enough to get over the voice.
The heads are talking I guess.
Not my jam.
3 talking heads albums so far, hope it’s front loaded because I’m not sure how many more albums I can handle. This album seemed a little better than Food & Buildings, but not much. It seemed like the lyrics are what I do when I don’t know the words to a song and just start making them up to sing along. I thought it was his voice that might irritate me after a while but I went back and listened to “Remain in Light” album and that wasn’t the case. There is something about these albums that I just don’t appreciate I guess. Remain in Light seems on a different level.
Thisnshit sucked
Lame, except for ‘Psycho Killer’
Psycho killer is great, but the rest of the album doesn't reach their potential of what they will become in later albums
Very basic with one redeeming song.
Not my vibe. Didn't finish.
Great guitar riffs, interesting lyrics, voice too much
just so so
Good vibes. Classic talking heads weirdness. Bit boring and background music. Enjoyed it, but didn’t capture my imagination.
The two last tracks are really nice. The rest is meh. Not my type of music.
I always think of MTV when I see/hear Talking Heads, specifically the Once In a Lifetime song. At the time, I thought it was good, but now that we have listened to a couple albums by these guys, I don't really get it. Even the "big" hit Pyscho Killer is just OK. Nothing made me excited and nothing made me want to revisit or download. Found myself getting a little annoyed at his voice too. They do have a few very good hits. Swamp is absolutely a classic, along with And She Was. Outside of those, there is nothing else I find to be a must listen. Not for me. 2
definitely not as good as the other one
Can’t stand David Byrne’s voice but the rest of the band is pretty tight. Credit them for taking the punk spirit with an arty approach without the nihilist attitude.
At some point singer's wailing seemed the one i overheard last week at the dentist. Didn't enjoy it.
Some resistance popped up as soon as I read "Talking Heads." I'm going to give this album an unbiased listen...here we go! Already grooving on the opening track, "Uh-Oh, Loves Comes to Town." The lead singer's voice isn't my favorite but let's see if it grows on me. Despite not liking the voice, these tracks are funky and have my body grooving. But grooving wasn't enough - I find the lead singer's voice very annoying, and I'm not a fan of the straightforward lyrics.
Boring
I found the quirks to be more annoying than interesting
I like a lot of bands that were influenced by them, but I don't like the Talking Heads themselves as much. Singing is annoying. Songs are too monotonous. Not terrible, but it doesn't stick. Favorite song: who is it
I don't get talking heads, really doesn't do anything for me. It's not like it's terrible, but just doesn't grab me. Too be fair, this was probably better than I was expecting, but still don't think it's for me and won't be going back 2.5
It sounds like a Talking Heads album. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood today, but I got a bit bored.
American new wave doesn't sound much different than British new wave. Generic, mediocre, and annoying.
I haven’t quite cracked the code on why I can’t quite get behind Talking Heads, but it’s quite clear there no answers to be found in their sleepy debut.
talking heads' debut album released in 1977 has a cute title: talking heads: 77. but the actual album itself wasn't too exciting for me. my review for another of their albums allowed me to realize that i enjoy their hits but not much more. that holds true here, too. "psycho killer" is a certifiable bop of a song, but what sticks out the most is that talking heads replicate various aspects found in "psycho killer" into their other songs but nothing is as good or catchy. i did find myself intrigued because there's more funk than i expected (not mad about it).
I think I liked this Talking Heads album more than the previous one I received, but I am still not very enamored with them. I'm not sure what it is, but they just mostly come off as boring and sleepy to me. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love everything about "Psycho Killer"; it has been my long-standing favorite Talking Heads song, but the rest of the album just didn't live up to the hype that this song gives me. I will say, Talking Heads have always sounded very distinct to me, and on this debut album, that sound is just as present for them as it is on later albums. So again, props to a band who knew their sound from the very beginning. It just turns out that I'm discovering that that sound is mostly not for me. If I was JUST reviewing "Psycho Killer", this would be an easy 5 stars, but unfortunately the rest of the album drags the rating down for me.
Ok, this is my second Talking Heads album now, and I’m no further forward with them than an asthmatic ant carrying some heavy shopping. I just…don’t get it. What’s the fascination? What do they bring? Why should this be blowing my socks off? Why doesn’t it? Why do I feel so nonplussed by it? I’m sure there will be another 300 of their albums to plod through so maybe better luck next time?
2/5. I understand the vibe and the crazy jump in rock music but the songs are just not super fun to listen to. You can tell there is potential for sure but David Byrne doesn’t feel like he knows what he’s singing about. Like someone told him to sing these songs. They’re fine but some can be quite annoying. Best song: Psycho Killer, New Feeling
Love talking heads but honestly let down. when their songs are bad they’re legit bad but their good ones are nice
C Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town - 2 New Feeling - 3 Tentative Decisions - 3 Happy Day - 3 Who Is It? - 2 No Compassion - 1 The Book I Read - 3 Don’t Worry About The Government - 2 First Week / Last Week… Carefree - 3 Psycho Killer - 3 Pulled Up - 3 I don't really like the Talking Heads or this album, but it had some good moments. There were some low moments too. All in all, I don't understand the Talking Heads hype.
Just an alright record for me. I didn't actively dislike anything really but I didn't see any great reason to listen to this apart from the 2 best tracks - Psycho Killer which is cool but played so much throughout my life it's hard to not see it as radio filler/halloween novelty - Don't Worry About The Government which is legit an interesting song with a good hook and vibe
knew Psycho Killer from RB2 and always thought it was a weird yet kinda enjoyable track. the rest of this album is exactly that but it got kinda tedious.
Like kje Talking Heads, syns Psycho Killer e irriterande
Eeeesh, I wanted to like it, but man a little Talking Heads goes a long way.
I briefly listened to the album once, and it was ok. For such an influential band, there were sone highlights, but I also don’t understand the hype. Listen again: probably Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: Psycho Killer (the obvious choice) Worst Song:
Bassläufe oft nice, Gesang nicht so meins
It's okay, a bit above average. I like the vocals
This smoothly glided in and out of my years leaving now residue aside from “Psycho Killer”, which bangs. A clear concept well executed, I admire this record without it moving me: my loss.

I thought this would be a great album, one where I knew every song even though I never knew who sang them. Maybe I heard them all parodied on the Simpsons. But nope. I knew one. And it was awful. Let's put it this way. Any album where half the lyrics are "YEAH YEAH YEAH" or "NA-NA-NAAA-NA-NAH" or "BA BA BA" or just yelling into the mic, that's a "NO-NO-NOOO" for me. Still give this two stars since there are a couple of bangers. (Not Psycho Killer.)
I personally don't like the Talking Heads..
Not that special
Not a fan of the singers voice or how the songs are constructed. It just dosent click. But there are some redeeming qualities in some of the songs.
I liked one song.... otherwise just another old rock album with lots of boring music.
