The drum solo in Ba-Lue was extremely swingin. The other songs were pretty good. Idk, I don’t love listening to jazz but this is a good jazz album. 6.5/10
6/10 - Pretty good but I need to be in the right mood to listen to jazz. That mood was not when i was listening to it. Insaneintherain made a jazz cover of pokemon songs that I absolutely love because he took the songs that I liked and made them even more jazzy which was great. Sometimes jazz on its own does not do it for me.

It’s jazz. It’s nice, I guess. It’s good for background music at dinnertime. I wouldn’t ever choose to listen to it on the road or in my headphones, though.
this could have received a 1 expect for the fact the first song reminded me of when cats walk on a piano and manage to compose a piece that’s not a cacophony so … yeah

If I had to describe this album using one of the words from its title, corners wouldn't make sense at all, so I'll just go ahead and call this album brilliant. This is some great jazz right here. The work that went into this album is tremendous. The mastery of the instruments, understanding of music itself, and complexity behind the compositions make this a great listen. It serves well as good background noise for other tasks, but also has enough depth to it to be able to spend the whole 42 minutes just analyzing the sound. All of the instruments just blend well to create an album that's well worth a listen, or maybe even multiple. Light 4/5.

Listen, I've listened to a lot of jazz in my time and I have come to realize that I like more brass-heavy exciting jazz compositions rather than meandering slow, extremely improv heavy jazz. This album is the latter and I'm not ashamed to say I don't like it. This feels like background music at a restaurant, but I'm not at a restaurant I'm sitting and listening to this album straight through. Despite this record being technically very impressive, I just couldn't get into it.

This was kinda fun
A jazz classic, the performances on here are stellar and the melodies are incredible. It wanders around and takes you on a journey from start to finish.
The think I like about jazz is I think the improvisational aspect is as close to mapping the creative human mind we have. That said, the music itself (outside of a live setting) doesn't do too much for me besides background music. Although I do love playing it when I write. Monk is exceptional for me because of his eccentric playing style and I really liked a lot of this more than I thought I would. I like to think he's playing with hot dog fingers.
This had (what seemed to me to be) some very complex solo sections, especially Monk's piano and some saxophone bits. I can never tell how much is "composed" vs "improvised" but, either way, it sounds great.
This being the second Jazz album that I've really listened to all the way through, I couldn't really pick out anything particularly stand-out in the music. It was fine background music, the musicians are obviously incredibly talented but it wasn't really up my alley.
Really liked this one. Never spent a full album with TMonk - he certainly loves his dissonance, and I guess the title track took 25 takes. At one point the bass player couldn't be heard but it turned out he was just miming it. This one is right on the edge between 4 and 5 stars but I'm gonna go 4.

Have I heard this album before? No Highlights: Rating: 3.5/10 I’m not really qualified on what makes jazz music enjoyable. I looked it up and this album is hard bop. Monk is clearly quite good at piano, but this style of you solo, I solo music doesn’t really click with me yet.
amazing album for the time it came out, foundational
Monk is one of the kings of bebop/jazz and this album is a standout example. Great horn section, choppy piano and chill drums. This is what I think of when I think classic jazz.

Typical Monk: killer tunes superbly performed. I don't want to write any more because it would be 3000 words, minimum.
I can't say I've listened to all that much of Thelonious Monk's repertoire, so it's both fun to get an album by him and at the same time hard to know if this is outstanding or typical for him. Either way, I enjoyed listening to it. It's a bit of a bummer to read (the Wikpedia entry) about how challenging this album was to make, and how it ended up being more of a compilation album thanks to the complete dysfunction involved in recording the title track, especially given how each track *sounds* as if it's a bunch of friends having a good time riffing off each other. (But also pretty funny to find out that in one of the apparently 25 takes of "Brilliant Corners," the bassist was pantomiming playing in protest (or maybe just annoyance).) Tensions and egos aside, this is a fun album of clearly talented musicians.
enjoyed but wasn't blown away by this
I feel like I'm listening to the movie Whiplash without the scolding of JK Simmons. I can't deny the sheer talent in this record. The rhythm section alone makes me speechless. I'm unsure how to even rate this... Because it's brilliant all around. But st the same time... I don't really want to hear it again. I'd love to watch it. It's a 5/5 if I saw it live, but I am going to have to give it a 4/5 just listening to it. Even with that, I don't know if I'm being too strict with this rating. But I'm going with my gut.

Great stuff, stellar band! Whenever I listen to Monk, I feel like it's about to drop into chaos. Listening to this album, I realized it's because he plays so far behind the beat. Also, on I Surrender Dear I realized the piano has a few notes just a touch out of tune, which adds a little grit to the overall coolness and beauty of the recording. Fabulous!

A fine example of an artist I hadn’t had much exposure to in the past, whose discography I would now love to deep-dive into. Brilliant Corners was brilliant indeed. This is exactly why I enjoy the 1001 albums project so much, stumbling across gold like this.

That was some cool and complex sound coming at ya. Monk is working overtime here with his composition and play. Wonderful to hear an artist at work pushing the envelope.
This is some high quality background music, and I say that not intending to knock this in any way. Certainly this could be listened to as a main event, but I happen to be working with this in the background and it is a wonderfully stimulating without ever distracting. Pannonica is one that stood out to me. Also absolutely love the piano work on I Surrender, Dear. Completely stripped of supporting cast Monk strings together a captivating and soulful piano medley. I've definitely heard Bemsha Swing before -- either interpolated in other jazz or somewhere in a Hollywood production. This was fantastic and I plan to listen again soon. Only qualm I have is I wish the upright bass was punched up just a bit in the mix. Otherwise, this is a fine example of a high quality jazz collaboration. Monk's keywork underpins much of the album (obviously, it has his name), but Sonny Rollins' sax constitutes a great amount of the life force of this album. 5 / 5
b2b jazz! This one certainly has a different feel than the Bill Evans Trio. I really like that this album gives each instrument time to shine and it isn't too chaotic like some Jazz.
Back to back jazz albums which is cool to see the differences in style. This is more my style of jazz than Bill Evans. I like the walking bass in the background and the powerful horns. This would have been a great time to go see live at and dance the whole time
Listened to some Monk but not this one. Another one I’m happy I listened to on a gloomy day. Just really pleasant on the ears. This one’s a little “louder” than the last with some sax spiraling away on it. All about it easy 4.

Oh my god why with the jazz Random thoughts: • Are drums the only instrument on jazz records that are consistently enjoyable? • If I, a terrible piano player, attempted to solo by playing random, dissonant, syncopated notes over these chords changes, would the average listener be able to tell the difference? • Seriously, how to people get pleasure out of music that is simultaneously so dissonant and yet so bland? • I really like Mike Garson’s work with Bowie. Why does that work for me when this is so off putting? Maybe it’s because Mike Garson works when he’s the only one going nuts in a band. This is like if the whole ensemble is made up of people doing the solo in Aladdin Sane at the same time. • No shade to bass players, but electric bass solos are rarely good, and upright bass ones are worse.
I am too uncultured to properly appreciate jazz, but this seemed good.
Haven't listened to anything by Thelonious Monk before as far as I know, but I love this! Will definitely be listening to more of his stuff.

Great relaxing jazz. Good music to work to.
Like Thelonious Monk and his cast of all-star musicians on this album. He is, obviously, a virtuoso and his playing goes from lyrical and melodic, to chaotic and all over the place, often from bar to bar. Not 'easy' to listen to but it is enjoyable in the be-bop, late 50's jazz style.
First Jazz album since we started this that I actually enjoyed all the way through. The structure within this album was like a warm embrace compared to the chaotic madness that was Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew."

Thelonious Monk has always been an artist I knew about but never listened to and I was so happy to finally have a chance. The quality of the musicianship on this is just so good and despite its complexity, extremely easy to listen to. It prompted me to keep listening to jazz for hours after.
Good album, a bit boring as just instrumental but felt peaceful
I owe this album a revisit. It feels like a nice dinner party album.
Nice to have in the background! Some solos from Monk can be a bit spicy for me but not too crazy. I think this type of jazz probably is enjoyed best live but it is really nice to have in the background also.

Just heard the inspiration for Roger Radcliffe's "Cruella de Vil" song in 101 Dalmatians in "Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues Are," and my mind was pretty blown.
It's Jazz for 45 minutes. Okay. Nice for a while, got a little bored.
There are aspects of this album - like the title track - that help me speak the beautiful jazz vernacular. There are other tracks that stymie my scholarly pursuits in this arena. I’m still better for having heard it. I’ll round up a half-star correspondingly and get back to my studies.

Thoroughly enjoyed this album. Aware that Thelonious Monk was a giant artist of jazz but didn't prefer his style of playing. Appreciate it more now, loved the group. Favourite song is Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are.

Holy Shit! Three of the best at their instrument during their prime. Thelonious Monk (piano), Sonny Rollins (sax) and Max Roach (drums) (+ a few others) in 1957- Jazz doesn't get much better than this. Brilliant Corners, Ba-Lu Bolivar and Bemsha Swing are three of my all-time favorite jazz compositions. Enjoyed this with a glass of bourbon and some mood lighting. I had this on repeat all day.

Coming from someone who isn't very well-versed in jazz, this album seems like a good place to start. It strikes a nice balance of the familiar and the more abstract side of the genre so it doesn't feel overwhelming for a newbie.

This is the kind of music I would enjoy in the background at a fancy restaurant, but not the kind I would really choose to listen to. It's technically good, just not to my personal taste. That said, I did quite like the final track, "Bemsha Swing."

I hadn't listened to Monk in a very long time. It's been decades since I've carefully listened to old school jazz. It was enjoyable, but I don't think I want it to become regular again.
I didn't hate this, but I can't help but see this as nothing more than boring restaurant jazz. All the songs being instrumental definitely doesn't help, especially with how repetitive some parts can be. I liked the last song though, it's a shame the rest of the album couldn't have been more like that since I actually found that one to be really dynamic and interesting.

With as vast as jazz is, I don't know if I am able to truly comment on an album like this. That said, what I do know is how it made me feel. Despite struggling to find the pocket in the first and second track ,once arrived, it was a warm and entertaining listen. Jazz albums attributed to leaders always feel somewhat slight as the players across the board are masters in their domains and the limelight is spread and shared evenly. I'm excited to hear more as I progress through this exercise.

So this is a jazz album. If it has no singing I most likely won’t enjoy it as much. I do like jazz a lot though.
I dug it. Kind of go into a trance with jazz so hard for me to focus on a song itself if that makes sense.

I listened to most of it, but this type of jazz sounds like someone carrying too much stuff down stairs that are too narrow. It could be funny if it was less annoying.
I think my first time hearing about Thelonious Monk was in The Terminal (every time I say "bite to eat," no one ever gets the reference. I can't be the only person who's seen that movie), but I've never listened to any of his music before today. Jazz is one of the genres that I'm the least familiar with, and most jazz albums that I've reviewed have gotten three stars from me, mostly because I don't really know how to gauge them. However, now that I have little bit more experience with jazz under my belt, I think I can honestly say that I found this album pretty underwhelming. It was pleasant to listen to, but there just wasn't a lot going on that captivated my interest. Most of the arrangements were pretty bland, and I don't think I would have been able to identify any music from this album again, even if I had just listened to it five minutes ago. A pretty underwhelming experience.

A very solid jazz album. This LP has tremendous production for a fifties album too, it’s possible that it’s been remastered, but it doesn’t explicitly say. All the instruments have their roles and they all play their parts well.
This was a great jazz album, I love the longer songs too.

Great jazz album! Noted for future use.
I don’t think I’m very qualified to have much of an opinion of jazz music. It’s a very cozy album. Makes me want to sit in front of a fireplace with a comfortable blanket. Makes me think of the Christmas music I enjoy, or a fancy hotel lobby or nice restaurant. It sounded very technical. That mixed with the song lengths is very impressive.
I love the variation of sounds between songs. This record takes you on an awesome journey. Especially the title track. That song is all over, progressing, speeding up, slowing down. Its a journey. The brass, the keys, the bass are all on point and jam so tight together. The drums, however, really stand out. What I really like about this record is how they take risks but always keep it tight and progressing forward, each moment where you think its going one way, it always ties back to original song. I also did not realize the "Cruella Deville" is a total rip off of "Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-lue-ares." Super cool. Plus, that song absolutely slays. The jams are so good. Every instrument gets a moment that feels natural and non-forced. The keys in Pannonica are so dreamy. I like how this song slows down the pace, its moody and vibey but keeps the aesthetic of the rest of the record. Really fun and deeply engaging record.

Great album that I've never listened to before
I have limited exposure to jazz, so it's difficult for me to assess this album from a critical perspective. I find it to be easy to listen to, seems to be improvisational as many songs tended to lead me along a journey through various small sets of different instruments/rhythms.
Had nt heard this one before. I like but don't love Monk as sometimes I find the melodies a bit dissonant. But I really enoyed every minute of this album. Brilliant Corners is brilliant. 5 stars

Beshma Swing is one of my favorite compositions. Every note of this album is perfection. Monk was one of the all time jazz masters and this album reflects his genius. No brainer: 5 stars.
EEN JAZZ ALBUM, thank god. Na al die rock hiervoor ben ik blij weer even iets anders te hebben. Het is een prachtig album, met daarin slechts 5 nummers, maar deze zijn allemaal lang en nemen je mee op reis. Vertellen een verhaal zeg maar. De piano is de grote ster, logisch met Thelonious Monk als hoofdartiest, en dat vind ik wel eens fijn na voornamelijk de saxofoon of trompet als ster te hebben gehad tot noch toe. Het is een fijn album, zeker niet op het level van Kind of Blue, maar dat is dan ook een uitzonderlijk album. Wel vind ik dit gewoon echt een heel erg goed album. Ik snap volledig dat dit onderdeel is van de lijst, geef me alsjeblieft meer Jazz. FAVO: Pannonica, I Surrender, Dear, Bemsha Swing
Highlights - Brilliant Corners is an incredible composition. And as with yesterday's jazz adventure (Hot Rats - Frank Zappa) I really just enjoy being swept away by the music. Didn't like - Nothing, loved it. Overall - With jazz I just love to switch my brain off and vibe. I don't necessarily understand what's happening musically but it's obvious that there's an incredible amount of talent on display. And this came out in 1957! Absolutely pioneering. I will go back to this for sure.
If you love old jazz with piano, you'll like this. To be fair, I haven't listened to much Monk that I don't like.

Favorite songs: Brilliant Colors, Pannonica 1st listen: Harsh dissonant chords were surprising and abrupt. Whole album felt like 1 song. 2nd listen: I was waiting for those harsh chords, enjoyed the chaos. I began to hear the subtle differences between songs 3rd listen: Whole album feels like a movie with different acts. Easy to listen to on repeat. Sounds best when played in order.

Not a jazz fan, but I enjoyed this album. Great technique on all the instruments, an enjoyable listen. Of the five tracks, I liked I Surrender, Dear, the most.

This album was enjoyable as all hell. I love that it’s got such a back story of how complex these tracks were to play and the vision Monk had to push through the turmoil in order bring these tracks to life… now? Do I think you need to hear this album before you die? If you want to hear how Jazz became complex? How Jazz moved into the Miles, Coltrane technical era? Subsequently creating artists like Prince? Then I will suggest you listen. If none of that means anything to you? Then you have every reason to skip. But it is an enjoyable, albeit specific, listen that I’ll happily return to but I don’t know if others will

This one had me in the first half. The piano wasn’t my speed, and it brought me down in the first half. The songs also just weren’t that interesting to me. But the second half was a major step up. The last two songs in particular were amazing. While half of it isn’t that good, it’s worth it to see the second half. Cool!

Heard much better from these, this just largely passed me by. Not in a great way either, at one point I found myself turn it off as I couldn’t concentrate on what I was doing with that in the background. A few nice bits here and there, but I wont be back
This is exactly down the middle in what I expect from Jazz, it ticked all the boxes in a good way without ever really surprising me. It might be that this was the trailblazer that makes jazz sound like this, but I doubt it. Perfect background jazz when you don't want any curveballs but Im not bowled over by it. 3.5
A bit of a jazz overload - I didn't mind this to an extent. I like Thelonious, by Thelonious Monk, pretty iconic, but nothing stood out. Jazz can put me on edge, the lack of structure can be jarring.
This is the kind of jazz I dislike, long, self indulgent and too jarring to just have on in the background.
Too jazzy for me. Might be brilliant, but I wouldn't know and just can't really appreciate it. Not my thing, would never choose to listen to this, even as background music, as I think it's a bit too jarring compared to other more mellow jazz we've had.

Thelonious Monk is fantastic. This album feels so ahead of it's time for coming out in the 1950s. Love the sax work on it in particular.

Really good but not sure if it ever super gelled. I think I need some time with it and some future re-listens and I'm pretty sure I'll love it in time. I was the same way about Coltrane.
