Reviews (page 11 of 12)
I think the individual performances on the record are really strong, but it definitely has that non-cohesive jazz sound where everyone is doing something different and trying to keep up and it does not serve my ADHD well trying to hear different parts at the same time. I have zero doubt that this is a great jazz album if jazz is your thing, but man I just prefer music where everything is in sync and the instruments work in harmony to compliment one another. I had to skip ahead on each track because I couldn’t do 8+ minutes of them. I’d give it 1.5 stars ideally but I’ll round up because this feels like a me problem
I hate to say this for a legend like Monk but this album just feels so unremarkable. Nothing here really grabs me, no hook. None of the tracks particularly stand out, and though there’s some good moments, there’s nothing here that would really keep me plugged in. Just feels very generic, and not in a way I need to hear again.
Les solos de contrebasse, c'est non. Les solos de trompette, non plus. Just play the right notes!
Wasn't bad, but I wasn't into it. I think I probably just don't get it. Wouldn't relisten
Good background music Best track: I surrender, dear
Kind of music I imagine Ross puts on to "set the mood"
I likely won't revisit this due to my own personal taste. It was giving elevator music but I still can appreciate it! Good for working
I appreciate the complexity of the album, it was an easy listen, but not very engaging in my opinion, some parts dragged on a lot, or there were long solos, which made the album much less excentric and expressive. Overall I appreciate the record, but it just isn't for me. I'd give this album a 4,7/10.
This was jazz. Not an avid jazz listener, so I can't tell if it was good jazz or not. But I can confirm it was jazz. Stinks that I've been trying to listen to more jazz and yet didn't find this one all that compelling. Fav: Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are Least Fav: Brilliant Corners
Nice relaxed album. Was listening to it while doing some jobs and had it as background. A nice antidote to the hustle and bustle - reminded me of the scene in Goodfellas when Henry Hill is being followed by the helicopter while shopping for the pasta recipe.
Rolig jazz, deilig og litt kjedelig. Bemsha Swing on top
Neat!
i just can’t seem to get into this kind of jazz 2.5
It's Jazz, with brass instruments.
It's jazz, I just can't get into jazz. Rating: 2
Jazz is such a drag to get through. It's not terrible by any means, it's just incredibly boring Give me jazz-influenced genres any day of the week and I'll eat that shit up, but jazz by itself it too tedious. It's needs something else alongside it
Just not my bag
I think everytime jazz comes up I say the same thing. Nice ambience, not got enough of a palette today I like it or not
Jazzy stuff, didn't make feel anything to be honest, I understand the technical aspect of it, but I think it's not as appealing as other genres
It's jazz. It's kinda cool. If you like jazz. Which I don't.
Surprisingly I enjoyed 3 of these tracks. The xylophone solo was a deal breaker and the opening track’s timing fuckery made me feel like my atoms were in the wrong spot
i don't know a lot about jazz
?????
Too many discordant passages in this for me to really like. I like other music from Monk, but I didn't much care for this album 2.5
To me this is just your standard run of the mill jazz. Nothing too special
Thelonious Monk is one of the legends of Jazz music. I remember playing his music in Jazz band in High School. I hated Jazz Band in High School.
It's jazz. It worked fine as background music and it's annoying if you actually listen closely.
I hated this less than I expected. Still awful, but better than that Miles Davis trash I listened to here.
Jazz
I don’t get jazz but occasionally I enjoy some of it. I did not enjoy this at all.
Nice jazz. His style is a little frenetic for me, but you can't go wrong with a classic jazz artist like Thelonious Monk. It's more accessible than some of his other albums.
Not a fan of jazz but I gave it a try. Still not a fan of jazz.
Very old school Jazzy
2/5
I understand why this album made the list but it did not resonate with me
Not that big of a jazz fan.
A two star album, but Thelonious Monk is a five star name
Ahhh not for me Simpsons: Yes
I'm not a fan of this, but he has a cool name, which earns him an extra star.
Fine. Jazz, no lyrics, nothing super exciting
Yep, it's definitely jazz.
American Jazz. Good musically just not my thing
I'm going to preface this by saying that I was busy while listening to this and didn't give it the attention that I usually do with albums. This really didn't do much for me. It sounds like a bunch of guys that were hired to do the hold music for your telco got bored and started drinking.
Mm mm… that’s another jazz album over
I just don't like jazz.
I'm trying to like jazz - but mostly I just don't. This is in the never listen to again jazz category
That's not my taste in music
Never heard it. I generally don't like modern art or modern jazz I'm not qualified to judge this.
Not my jam. At all.
I'm not way into jazz as I once was. Overall, I can only say that it's pleasant.
Inspiring on such a subterranean level. I just couldn't sit and listen to this. I felt like I should be in some hepcat Bowery bar or coffee house in the mid-60's wearing dark shades and talking to others about communism and why it is or isn't going to overtake our world while this plays in the background. Oh! and smoking lots of filterless cigarettes.
Oh jazz, I will be so happy to quit you when this journey is over.
I couldn’t find a commonly accepted antonym for synergy. Dysergy derives from a medical term, dysergia, that refers to a lack of muscular coordination due to defective nerve conduction. No. Reverse synergy describes when the value of an individual unit might be more than the merged unit. Closer. In toxicology, antagonism refers to the case where the combined toxicity of two compounds is less than the individual toxicities. I think this comes the closest here. These musicians are wonderful players individually. But combined, I would need some toxic substances to enjoy their antagonistic creations.
Meh. Didn't care. Repetitive. Once again I don't do jazzz
Ermmmm, well it was just a load of old piano jazz. I guess it wasn't as insulting as some of the experimental jazz but still it just isn't my thing. Parts were quiet pleasant to have in the background.
Not my flavour of jazz. 2/5
Sounded very dissonant to me... was that the point.. I like "Bemsha Swing", and "I Surrender, Dear" as the top 2 on the album, but overall it was a hard listen, and not for me.
It's jazz. I generally like the sound of Jazz trios/quartets. However, this sounds a great deal like ever other combo I've ever heard and every song is almost undistinguishable to my ear. Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are sounds like the music from Cruella DeVil. This could be on in the background and it wouldn't bother me, but I couldn't see putting it on just to listen to it.
Solid jazz music. Can see why he was seen as a revolutionary. Probably would not listen again though.
No so brilliant in my eyes. I'm sure some Jazz aficionados would have my head for saying that but Jazz just doesn't click with me.
Not my thing
I'm sure this is a good and acclaimed jazz album, but I just don't enjoy jazz music.
Is this where the cruella Seville song came from?
No vocals huh? I guess they don’t need em. Nice melodies. Not my cup of tee though
There are jazzers there are anti-jazzers and I sit somewhere in the middle. But this didn't grab me. I did muse that if I was 18 years old when this came out I'd have been right on it, but they had invented words by the time I was born.
Still dont get this kind of improjazz.
Tror at det ville være godt at høre live. På pladen forsvinder magien lidt
Too experimental for me
Bossa Nova is the ultimate elevator music but this must come a close second
I like Jazz, but this is a bit unstructured for my ape-brain jazz tastes. Still enjoyable.
Good backdrop jazz.
I don't listen to this type of music but I did enjoy this, thought it was very cool. I probably wasn't listening hard enough or am not knowledgeable enough to fully appreciate this but I did like it
cool sound. I don't know if I would ever consciously listen to it again, but it was a nice experience.
Boring as all heck. I enjoy jazz but I don't understand what about this album stood out enough to have it on this list.
Bright, busy and bouncy. Hurt my head to try.
In not big on jazz outside Miles Davis but I'm learning more doing this project. As for this album I'm admire the musicianship and I liked some parts of it but unfortunately it wasn't really my thing. I found parts of it boring which I do with a lot of jazz but i understand this albums and Monk's importance not just in jazz but in music and why it should be in the book. I do think Jazz as a genre will grow in me and the more I listen the more I get it, but for now this is a miss for me.
A really odd listen. I’m just not into its weirdness.
Would probably say my first jazz album!! Going in, I worried that all the songs would sound the same. As of now (the third song out of five), I am pleasantly surprised. Loving bass guitar (??) near the end of Ba-lue Bolivar Ba-lies-ar. If only I knew what the title meant. Also really really liking the xylophone (???) on Pannonica. Is that a xylophone. If anything at all comes from this whole challengée hopefully it will be an ability to recognize instruments in songs.
I have tried to get into Monk many times and for decades, and nothing works. I believe him to be over-rated.
Non particolarmente significativo
not really my thing. as with a lot of jazz that i have experienced, it meanders and goes on and on. and as a general rule, i don’t like instrumentals.
Again: NOT A JAZZ GUY
jazz
Middling jazz
Jazz isn't really my thing
Instrumentation was nice I guess, but I found this boring and aimless.
Jerez this was bad
Amazing musicians but this is probably dating me as all I can hear is this music would be great on an episode of Mr Rogers neighborhood.
Jaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzz.
could i write poetry to this? n
Soothing & fun Jazz music. I don’t have much to say, as I’m a casual in this genre. But the vibes were there!
Jazz ain’t my bag but there’s a lot of objective talent on display here, especially when it comes to drum breakdowns. Listened to: on a bus to Quetzaltenango. Favorite track: Ba-lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are
I get that some people love jazz, I'm just not one of those people. I can admire the skill and virtuosity I just can't listen to it (I did though for the purpose of this exercise)
I liked it! Good instrumentals plus it was fun
I’m sure it’s good but I just don’t like jazz that much
It’s jazz. It’s nice, I guess. It’s good for background music at dinnertime. I wouldn’t ever choose to listen to it on the road or in my headphones, though.
this could have received a 1 expect for the fact the first song reminded me of when cats walk on a piano and manage to compose a piece that’s not a cacophony so … yeah
i didnt enjoy lostening to anything past the first few minutes of the first song.
Brilliant Corners presents an intriguing journey into the world of Thelonious Monk's avant-garde jazz. While the album is considered to have not necessarily reach the heights of Monk's most revered works, it maintains a cohesive sound throughout, with all musicians seemingly synchronised in their interpretation of the music. While it may not be ground-breaking, Brilliant Corners still offers a glimpse into Monk's innovative approach to jazz composition and remains a noteworthy addition to his discography. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 0 STAND OUT TRACK - None
This being the second Jazz album that I've really listened to all the way through, I couldn't really pick out anything particularly stand-out in the music. It was fine background music, the musicians are obviously incredibly talented but it wasn't really up my alley.
Jazz :-(
Good at what he does, I'm just not interested in what he does.
Yet another jazz album I didn't like.
Not my favorite jazz album
Yeah okay. If I want something in the background maybe. But this is just not something I'll grab very quickly if I have the choice.
Nice background music
I'll get around to listening to this in full. It's just that I can't stand jazz.
Я вникаю потихоньку в джазец, но мне все равно тяжело улавливать че там происходит на протяжении сорока минут
Nothing to object to but I haven't found it memorable.
Parp. Not sure what to say about this. It made me smile but I don’t think I’ll be listening again.
It’s okay
too safe for me but the fact that his name is Thelonious Sphere Monk is hilarious, dope name
Not for me.
I owe this album a revisit. It feels like a nice dinner party album.
I can appreciate it, the complexity of it, but not my jam.
Didn’t listen to all of it since i really don’t like instrumental music. Doesn’t really make the review fair but ye
Bit of a Marmite Album Some will love some will hate but a bit cacophonous for me.
This is the kind of music I would enjoy in the background at a fancy restaurant, but not the kind I would really choose to listen to. It's technically good, just not to my personal taste. That said, I did quite like the final track, "Bemsha Swing."
Nein, zuviel Jazz
Fave: Bemsha Swing
Some fun jazz and definitely influential but it doesn’t grab me as something I could listen to regularly. I imagine watching this live would be an 11/10.
Leaves me cold
I hadn't listened to Monk in a very long time. It's been decades since I've carefully listened to old school jazz. It was enjoyable, but I don't think I want it to become regular again.
I didn't hate this, but I can't help but see this as nothing more than boring restaurant jazz. All the songs being instrumental definitely doesn't help, especially with how repetitive some parts can be. I liked the last song though, it's a shame the rest of the album couldn't have been more like that since I actually found that one to be really dynamic and interesting.
spaccatura di minchia assoluta
Por mucho que lo intento no consigo engancharme al jazz.
Not my type of music
I think my first time hearing about Thelonious Monk was in The Terminal (every time I say "bite to eat," no one ever gets the reference. I can't be the only person who's seen that movie), but I've never listened to any of his music before today. Jazz is one of the genres that I'm the least familiar with, and most jazz albums that I've reviewed have gotten three stars from me, mostly because I don't really know how to gauge them. However, now that I have little bit more experience with jazz under my belt, I think I can honestly say that I found this album pretty underwhelming. It was pleasant to listen to, but there just wasn't a lot going on that captivated my interest. Most of the arrangements were pretty bland, and I don't think I would have been able to identify any music from this album again, even if I had just listened to it five minutes ago. A pretty underwhelming experience.
dominka crushed me at go robert christgau really likes this album "July 1960, as I recall. A British salesman at Sam Goody's advises Brilliant Corners over Misterioso. Objectively, he's right. I all but memorize Brilliant Corners. But in the end I prefer Misterioso" jazz is very subjective innit
Not for me - but fine as background music
If you told me this was good jazz, I would believe it. I don’t know. I don’t get jazz and this didn’t make me get jazz.
Still don't really like jazz :/
I'm really not into jazz, but I guess I wouldn't turn this off if it was on in the background or mind it if it was playing in a restaurant or something.
Not for me
C- Brilliant Corners 2 Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are 2 Pannonica 2 I Surrender, Dear (Harry Barris) 2 Bemsha Swing (Thelonious Monk, Denzil Best) 2 I always thought it was Felonious Monk. I'm blaming the Berenstein Bears for this one...
Nothing really grabbed me on this one
Fine, but unmemorable.
not for me
Please do something interesting with your music.
Heard much better from these, this just largely passed me by. Not in a great way either, at one point I found myself turn it off as I couldn’t concentrate on what I was doing with that in the background. A few nice bits here and there, but I wont be back
A bit of a jazz overload - I didn't mind this to an extent. I like Thelonious, by Thelonious Monk, pretty iconic, but nothing stood out. Jazz can put me on edge, the lack of structure can be jarring.
Decent enough jazz, not for my liking tho. The fact that the guys name is Thelonious Sphere Monk was more interesting that the album, sadly. Significant 21/55 Liked 9/55 Added 2/55 yeah, no, no
This is the jazziest jazz that ever jazzed a jazz.
ya like jazz?
Can't say I've gotten into jazz, so it's hard to judge. No dislike here, but also not anything that stuck with me.
I'm not really qualified to talk to the quality of the jazz. I'm fine with the genre but do not find it too moving. Will I listen to again: 0%
Long as fk
“Jazz hands” 👐 4/10
2 Another just decent jazz album. An amazing talent to be sure, just not something I'd really listen to for pleasure
Jazz
Brilliant Corners - 2/5 Ba-lue Bolivar - 2/5 Pannonica - 2/5 I Surrender, Dear - 2/5 Bemsha Swing - 3/5
eh. sounds like jazz.
why
Not really the hugest fan of this type of jazz. I am more into jazz having a melody, and because of this I would have to give this album a 2/5 stars. I'm giving it 2 soley becasue of how talented he is on his saxophone.
Odlučija sam davat konkretnije komentare. Prvo sam da 3, al ću dat 2, jednostavno mi ne sida jazz, možda jednog dana sidne pa ću opet poslušat, al za sada 2...
Omg this is the first album from this that bored me so much I stopped before the end. I am tired and just can’t be arsed with something that doesn’t grab my attention tbh. And this does not grab my attention ETA: I made myself listen to the end. I kind of want to enjoy this kind of thing but I just don’t
I wish I liked jazz. But it’s just boring to me
I don’t really like jazz music because that’s what they were. I don’t think I’d listen to them again
It was fine. Its not my favorite type of jazz. 2 stars
Ok. First track’s shifting time signatures was off-putting.
meh
Not my thing
Jazzzz. Niet zo mijn ding, sorry. **
Okay, a little too sax honky for me at times.
Nah
May be great jazz, but it’s still jazz.
Jazz Rating: 2.0
no eres tu soy yo
Varmasti taitavia soittamaan, mutta tyyli ei ole oma pala kakkua. Pyöräillessä meni hienosti taustalla enkä rekisteröinyt kappaleiden vaihtumisia.
Soft, improv jazz. The kind that yo I would expect to hear in a relaxing spot. One that I wouldn’t visit very often because I would fall asleep. I don’t dislike the drum walks, the sax accompaniment, or the subtle keys. It’s that I don’t connect to this type of music.
I can appreciate it for musicianship, but it's just not my thing
I know Thelonious Monk is a legend and this is a solid album objectively, it just isn't my thing.
Technically impressive, but I didn't enjoy it.
I didn't enjoy this at all. The first song sounds like you're stepping on thousands of ducks in a field. After that it gets a little better, but not anything I would choose to put on.
It was a little bit like one of those acts you'd walk past in the street, nod, say "wow, they're talented" then walk on and never think about them again.
Kinda snooze
Dislike this kind of jazz
Not something I'd actively seek out, but I don't mind it if it's on in the background. 2.5 stars.
Not a fan of Jazz. I've listened to Thelonious Monk. I didn't particularly like it, but I can say that.
I dunno. It was fine jazz, not really my thing.
Not really a jazz guy….didn’t finish
No for me
I suspect that this is a great album for jazz fans. It had some moments I enjoyed but overall I just have a hard time getting into this style.
Jazz. Pleasant. Didn’t really ‘get it’.
I'm not a big jazz fan so I'm not expecting to really like the album. I can appreciate the instrumentation without really liking the genre as a whole.
meh jazz
Not that it's unlistenable, it's just not interesting enough to. 2/5
jazz raiz mas nada surpreendente
It wasn’t bad it just sounded like all other jazz. All songs sounded the same but I guess my favourite was Bemsha Swing. It’s more of an album to put on in the background.
Tepid background irrelevance. Clearly whatever particular blend of classic jazz this is, it isn't my lane baby
I get why it’s good but it’s so not my kinda thing 2/5.
Just when it starts getting musical (to me that means that the next note has some pleasing relationship to the last) off they go with some random, discordant plinking or plucking or some arhythmic stuff from the drums. Jazz really wanted to be overtaken by rock, because so much of the late '50s early '60s stuff is just plain ugly. Pannonica is mostly smooth and silky. The second side is less harsh but boring. Once again I'm convinced that Monk is the most overrated musician ever. He just hits random keys and everybody genuflects at his altar. Waste of my time.
Instrumental jazz just isn't my genre, even though I can appreciate the skill on display.
Not my style of Jazz at all, the abrupt and unorthodox changes make it rather unsettling
Irgendwie nicht so Brilliant.
Not for me. I prefer Thelonious' songs with just piano.
I will say this is my least favorite genre of music that we consistently have on here. Every single one of these jazz albums just feels like the band goes into the studio with 0 plan and they just play for 45 minutes to an hour. This doesnt sound like it was planned out and just sounds like they are winging it. This is the best jazz album I've heard so far on here. Still not good 3/10
Meh, didn't really enjoy it.
Some awesome moments, but too much horn for my taste, not really for me.
I enjoyed the opening/title track (always been a fan of funky time signatures). No such thing as bad jazz and I happily had this on in the background, but apart from that first track, nothing else stayed with me.
I find it quite difficult to critically appraise this. It sounds like music from another time (which it is I suppose as it was released not too long after the second world war) and whilst I can tell it’s accomplished it sounds very ‘easy listening’. I don’t know whether it’s good or not but it doesn’t do much for me. There’s def some 60s jazz which I like which is a bit more urgent and groovy but I find it difficult to relate this this. Can anyone help?
The first track aside, it's perfectly listenable. I just don't think I'll ever get into jazz. Prime cut: Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are.
Not sure I like Jazz that much
I just couldn’t get myself to focus on this album. The playing is great and they’re all super skilled players, this particular album is just a bit too background music for me.
Do you like jazz? Not that much
Jazz with lots of drum solos
The kind of jazz I have a hard time appreciating. Best track: Bemsha Swing
Not bad, no barren sonic trill as some jazz albums have been.
Meandering~
Jazz ok
Dit soort veganisten-jazz is prima te hebben zo af en toe, maar op een gegeven moment mis je toch echt het karakter van een goed stukje vlees.
Aangenaam op de achtergrond op een relaxte werkdag, maar niet uit liefhebberij.
No more jazz please. Making me nerveus.
"What are you playing for us tonight?" "Trumpet" This one is not for me.
They’re all undoubtedly talented musicians, but this just isn’t for me boo bop shada boo wop pop pop pe do. At least this is musical and unlike some feral cats have been chucked in the school music room like some jazz. Apologies jazz fans.
Elevator music with great drums.
Well thank god that's over.
Im sure more experienced ears appreciate this, but to my ears its sounds quite ordinary
You know...I'm sure this is good, but I still just don't get this kind of jazz. The off-beat notes make me...uncomfortable.
It’s just… not that fun to listen to. The first song was almost painful. This may have historical relevance, but the enjoyment was not there.
Jazz not my thing
Jazz d'ascensor
it's jazz!!
2/5 for some reason this kind of jazz was not of my taste
Jazz records are still eluding me. I understand why one would want to go see jazz performed, but I'm not sure why people want to sit and listen to jazz records. I've heard of Thelonious Monk enough to know he's gospel to the jazz world. This is another album I am sure I heard on repeat in a Starbucks in the early 2000s when I was studying for college exams. It's all good. I mean, nothing to hate here - just background music for sure. Also reminds me of Ryan Gosling's character in La La Land.
I don't like this style of jazz.
Not in the mood for this today.
Was this an album? I don't know. I liked a lot of the jazz solos, it was very impressive. But I can't see myself coming back to this. I appreciate this because it paved the way for the music that we hear today - but it is very old, very outdated. Impressive, but not exciting. 5/10
jazz is boring
Jazz has no logic. I challenge you to remember any melody from any of the songs you just heard...
nahhhh not my thing
Hated it
Jazz club…nice!
This is the kind of jazz I like. Slow, groovy, and you can just chill with it.
low key jazz band. 2.5/5
I don't care much for jazz. Then the album goes to a folk song for some reason then back to jazz. There's no need to listen to it again.
Jazz is boring.
Fuck yeah. Finally some jazz. Let's do this. I'm listening to it in the background while I'm working and so far halfway in it's not really grabbing me. I don't know if this is something I'd play a lot on my own tbh. Overall I don't think I'd listen to this again.
Not a jazz guy but I’ll admit I was more productive than usual while listening.
I like my jazz that comes with a strong northern Irish accent, this wasn't that.
It stirred nothing. Like LD and the ocean I feel like I'm missing something.
Part of me wishes I could get on-board with jazz but I just find it stressful more than anything. Bits of this sounded like a bunch of guys trying to learn their instruments for the first time. Best track: Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are
I listened to the first track and half each of the next two. It's not that it sounds really horrible (although it does sound completely improvies), but it's way too distracting for work.
Boring. Jazz is boring.
Another Jazzy effort. Not unenjoyable but doesn't really do anything for me. The highlight is Track 2 that sounds like Cruella DeVille's theme from Disney's 101 Dalmatians.
Jazz plus jazz equals jazz
*shrugs* could be ace but i'm far from the gadge to judge. I did find it frustrating that once it hit a wee groove it quickly jumped away from it.
The Amazon Prime music version has one song clocking in at 42 minutes. The Allmusic description has 6, roughly at 42 minutes? I could have this on endlessly, but I'd probably listen to it once a year.
no noodling
deve ser bom pra quem tá familiarizado e curte o gênero... considerei música ambiente e olhei pra ver quanto tempo faltava pra acabar várias vezes... sou pleb pra jazz. não é minha praia não
2-3
Too much Jazz
Not the kind of instrumental music I really enjoy
Shit like this is why I can let Miles Davis get away with a two-star rating.
I was looking forward to this but it didn’t deliver, why do I always get albums like this when I have a headache?
No ei
Oooh....will this be the album that finally makes me appreciate jazz??? No. On to the next!
Didn’t like the drums, sorry Miles Teller
Not forme
1/5. Música de ascensor
I hate jazz
Not for me
Listened to this but found the length of tracks dreary. Jazz can be good to listen to but for me, in short bursts only
Arsenal 25/26
Still can’t appreciate this type of jazz. It lowkey makes me anxious too
Джаз - это не ко мне
I really was not in the mood for this today. It could be a good album but I was mostly just waiting for it to be over
I swear people only pretend to like Jazz because they think its cool
Pas mon genre
Boring.
Onanistic
Jazz is not for me
Turned it off. Rubbish
I'm not into this kind of Jazz - I prefer Big Band Jazz and songs I'm already familiar with (Whiplash songs for example that have strong energy) - so it's hard to rate this one. I find it monotonous, and, sorry Sebastian, but it sounds like elevator music to me. I cannot hang on to anything (lyrics, chorus, pattern) to identify it or remember anything. Obviously Thelonious Monk must be top of the class for Jazz lovers, I've heard his name many times, but I'm not trained and savy enough to care or understand what's great his music or his skills. Cover : Clever and effective, I like the color tone too.
Here we go again. Anyone says they like this are fooling themselves. In the first song there's a drum solo of sorts. He just randomly hits various drums. No rhythm or tune. Maybe that's asking to much. This can't be one of the greatest albums ever it is rubbish. The Emperors New Clothes. 8 albums in and 4 have been jazz. Still only giving my name rank and serial number but could give up the invasion plans at any moment The last track is very apt I Surrender Dear.
dull
01) Brilliant Corners - 5,0 02) Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are - 4,0 03) Pannonica - 4,0 04) I Surrender, Dear - 3,0 05) Bemsha Swing -3,0 TOTAL: 3,80 (38/100) Current ranking: 859/877
Det här är inte min jazz. Både tråkigt och dåligt i mina öron. Det här är för någon annan, det var knappt jag tog mig igenom den.
не понимаю это
Too long
no.
Don’t care much for Jazz - to each their own I suppose
Jazz.. Why did it have to be Jazz...
This is honestly kinda everything I hate about jazz albums. It’s so boring for the entirety of its runtime, it’s just him and his piano. It’s about 40 minutes of background noise, and I’m sure if I had been studying or at a jazz club or something it would’ve been great, but actually sitting and listening it’s just so boring. I can’t stand music that just meanders and wastes my time, and that’s all this album seems to do.
this was my second challenging album from the 50's today (the first being Sabu Cuban music). I can't do anymore!!!! I don't know what to say about it, except yup... that's jazz. Some jazz is very listenable and challenging at the same time. this album is just challenging. what a slog.
Nothing against the musicality but not for me.
So mid it hurts
Mid. Just cannot get into Jazz.
From the first few chords I just felt enraged. If this had been physical media, I would’ve hurled it against the wall. To paraphrase Pirandello, seven musicians in search of a tune.
Just not my style of music tbh
Not for me
Bit too plinky plonky. Very dated.
There was a band called Johnny Hates Jazz. I'm with Johnny!
Nothing that I will remember. Dullest jazz I've heard in ages.

I did not love this album. I get that is probably epic for fans of this genre. I just like my songs to be sung.
If I liked jazz even a little I likely would have enjoyed this. I saw Herbie Hancock at a music fest a few years ago and this album was leaps and bounds ahead of that. Something about jazz just makes me uneasy and ramps up my anxious feelings. Not for me.
