Pretty chill, feels like I might like it better on a relisten
Sounds like me playing the piano, not great.
Nothing I would have ever queued up on my own. Provided some calm during a stressful morning!
Enjoyable jazz. A little more eclectic than I like, but still enjoyed it.
Interesting to compare to other jazz albums on this list. I like this better than the last miles Davis one.
Good vibes
It's jazz. I like it okay
jazz.
Put me In A Turquoise Mood…..
I am too uncultured to properly appreciate jazz, but this seemed good.
Like Thelonious Monk and his cast of all-star musicians on this album. He is, obviously, a virtuoso and his playing goes from lyrical and melodic, to chaotic and all over the place, often from bar to bar. Not 'easy' to listen to but it is enjoyable in the be-bop, late 50's jazz style.
First Jazz album since we started this that I actually enjoyed all the way through. The structure within this album was like a warm embrace compared to the chaotic madness that was Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew."
Not bad overall, but not a normal listen for me
Nice to have in the background! Some solos from Monk can be a bit spicy for me but not too crazy. I think this type of jazz probably is enjoyed best live but it is really nice to have in the background also.
It's Jazz for 45 minutes. Okay. Nice for a while, got a little bored.
Very well-composed, but jazz isn't really my thing.
Good
Coming from someone who isn't very well-versed in jazz, this album seems like a good place to start. It strikes a nice balance of the familiar and the more abstract side of the genre so it doesn't feel overwhelming for a newbie.
Fun jazz, enjoyed running with this music
ehh it was okay. i can appreciate the technical skill it took for this to have been made and its okay as background music. but i dont think ill be giving this a second listen, its just not really for me.
Not a big fan of jazz, but I was really into the piano style in this album
Not my kind of music but I can see the magic there. Its that 70s/80s Mr. Rogers kind of jazz.
Their is genius in there somewhere, but it is beyond me. I wanted to love it, but it wasn't for me.
Not sure I was in the mood this morning. 3.
It’s okay
Really good, just not my preferred style of jazz
Really stretching me with 50s Jazz right after 63' country. I can see that if I desired to listen to this , this album would be a 4+ Not sure what criteria to use so giving it a 3...since I would not really listen
ive passively listened to this full album maybe 10 or so times while doing chores around the house.
2,5
Great album.
Album no. 9/1001 Better than the other jazz so far?
I did not listen to everything but I liked it
I had listened to something by this guy before but actually enjoyed it more this time. Quite nice.
Meh, inace slusam malo drukciji jazz
# Playlist track - Bemsha Swing # Notes - Soothing jazz. Not too chaotic. Great soundtrack to work.
3.9 fantastic jazz
I dug it. Kind of go into a trance with jazz so hard for me to focus on a song itself if that makes sense.
Bluesy, very mellow. Can put me to sleep. 3/5 stars for me
Not a bad album, but not really my cup of tea. Still, a good soundtrack for reading, for example
Interesting but didn’t move me.
Little too much straight jaz for me
Jazzzz
jazzy
Eventhough I don't like jazz this was rather enjoyable. Something you might listen to on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
sure is jazz!
do you like jazz? i like jazz (just not that much)
Good background, but didn't engage me.
No lyrics but calming jazz music I thought it was surprisingly good, something you’d hear at a fancy restaurant 3.4/5
Monk is Monk — not quite my cup of tea, but a legend for a reason.
I have limited exposure to jazz, so it's difficult for me to assess this album from a critical perspective. I find it to be easy to listen to, seems to be improvisational as many songs tended to lead me along a journey through various small sets of different instruments/rhythms.
Could be a 4 but there's so much going on it's almost stressful to listen to at times
Not one I would ever have just chosen to listen to, but I quite enjoyed it. Look forward to hearing more jazz, and learning more about it 3 🌟
#82. Jazz is like wine for me. No matter how good people say that it is, it all tastes the same to me. 3/5: boxed wine
not my music...
This bop is a bit too hard for my tastes. I prefer a softer bop
Sounds like jazz hands
Good jazz, but too clean for the Monk. I wanted more of his runs and feeling in the piano of his later records.
Interesting. Very interesting *strokes soul patch beard wisely*. Enjoyed it, in an unoffensive background-y way, can't say I loved it.
Gut für nebenbei, jazzy nachmittag
Not a big jazz fan but I think this was more accessible than Coltrane, maybe not for me but will revisit all the jazz stuff a bit in the future
It's jazz, it's not bad but not something I'd listen to in my regular rotation.
jazz.
More like 3.5 Lovely drums and piano
Not really my thing, but I liked some tracks more than I expected to.
enjoyable
Really like some of the songs but they’re just so long
Really good but not sure if it ever super gelled. I think I need some time with it and some future re-listens and I'm pretty sure I'll love it in time. I was the same way about Coltrane.
I don’t really like jazz…
I didn't like this as much as I hoped (as I wanted to somehow surprise myself and be really into jazz), but I liked it more than I'd feared (as I thought my brain would completely reject it). Wouldn't mind listening to this again, although odds are low I'll actually do it.
jazz.
At some point there should be a cut off for how far back you should be able to listen to music. Music absolutely got better with time. Even if you don’t agree with that, it’s undeniable that the recording equipment is better and makes the music crisper and sharper today. With that being said, the music was way better than I expected it to be. And I wanted it to be bad to prove a point. It’s just funny to be listening to what my grandparents were probably listening to at my age. I’m not the best at rating Jazz because I don’t listen to it enough to know what’s good and bad. I’ll just say it was pleasant and leave it at that 6/10
It's jazz. Good jazz and I've played a piece before for jazz band but at the end of the day it's just jazz. 6/10
You like jazz? 5/10
I feel like I’m building a pet shop in the sims 2
Colgate hour
I used to be into Thelonius Monk back in the early aughts. Lately, it doesn’t do it for me. Sadly, that is partly due to a shortened attention span that comes with a phone addiction. What I did find interesting to learn in the liner notes was how Monk was a mentor to Sonny Rollins on this album, and later to John Coltrane.
Not really my taste in music. I hope someday to appreciate it more
good jazz but nothing spectacular
Not my favorite, but still pretty good.
Interesting album. It feels like constant iterations of incomplete melodies. It has interesting parts. Very experimental jazz.
It's jazz
Jazz
Great change of pace from the regular albums on this list. A nice listen
Would never have listened to this. Enjoyed it.

Yeah Alright!
Jazz again. He is super good but jaaaazzzzzzz
Adding to the jazz rotation. Probably didn’t get the weirder bits but it was listenable to an untrained ear and maybe less overplayed than some other greats.
Good jazz album. The start of the album is a little more fast-paced and “jumpy”, but it eventually transitions to something more along the lines of smooth jazz. Good album to put on in the background.
Technically very impressive, but I'm not sure that I had that much fun listening to it. I do enjoy some jazz, but this didn't hit right for me. I'm sure I would feel differently if I'd been listening to it in a whisky bar with a cigar, but I wasn't. I was sat at my desk working.
Jazzy, but different than most jazz I've heard.
I enjoy Jazz in person but don’t typically listen to it in my spare time. This album was solid and enjoyable, and it’s easy to hear and admire the sheer talent of Monk and his mates.
Very Jazzy! I like the vibes. It's 50s. But not a huge jazz guy so 3 stars from me.
3/5 ITS JAZZ!
Still not quite feeling the jazz
Not as engaging as I'd hoped, still solid work all around from some great musicians.
This album gave me anxiety for some reason
Great Jazz album, likely the best album ill give a three simply because I doubt I'll listen to it again
Really good. Really fucking good. But didn't blow me away.
went to sdsu football game last night with dad, roy, tomas. genuinely might have been the most atrocious game of football I've ever watched. state lost 0-6 to nevada. this morning I had my first game back since the knee injury, didn't play but suited up. tied 2-2, we went 2-1 up in the last couple minutes but moss had a howler. can't blame the guy tho cause I've choked games a lot worse than that I don't understand jazz a lot but it was a fun album to listen to
Pretty good, though pretty sleepy for a large part. Bemsha Swing is catchy
Not my cup of tea but it was a pleasant experience.
Føle eg gir alle sånne album 3
3/5. It definitely is jazz and although the first song is wild to listen to, the album has some other pretty good ones. There feels like there is tension despite the quiet nature of most of the instruments. Like I am waiting for something to happen and it never does. Not bad, but definitely had me on edge while listening!
3 stars, because I don't actively enjoy it despite its quality I've never had the know-how required to appreciate jazz. This album didn't change that. It's fun to interpret a solo's emotional content as if it were a one-way conversation or speech of some sort, but that's as deep as I can get.
Malo mi je distorted previše za mene
The first track apparently took 25 takes due to its complexity. Good, but probably for more seasoned jazz fans. 3.
Sounds like solid jazz to me
Could listen over and over and still not hear that much.
Jazz to drink coffee to
good solid jazz record nothing mind bending for me to be honest
Pretty boring overall on first listen. I like jazz and all that but I didn't vibe with this one.
i think i’m bad at jazz 😖 standout- pannonica
Good jazz but not my favourite example of it we've had here.
A really nice listen, but it's jazz, and therefore it's never going to score mega highly with me. I like the idea of jazz, but the reality just doesn't get me going. This is perfectly nice background music, it's smooth, with a bit of oomph to keep you interested, but not enough drama. 3/5.
alright
hermoso
this music was nice enough as background noise but i didn't really enjoy listening to any of the tracks actively. i wanted to like the album but it just didn't do much for me personally. favorites: pannonica, bemsha swing
Compared to other Jazz albums this seems to lack a bit of soul. It gets a bit boring towards the middle, but still a decent listen.
Monk had several moments of impressive craftsmanship, but as a whole, this album rarely reached the heights that many of his groundbreaking contemporaries were able to.
Lekker voor erbij
I don't know much about jazz music but their musicianship was excellent and I enjoyed listening to this record. I can't really say anything beyond this.
it helped me focus while studying.
Reminds me of the time I took "Intro to Jazz" as an elective in college.
Great artist, no doubt. I have to be in the mood for jazz, which involves a glass of whiskey in a dimly lit bar! So it was good but it won't be on repeat for me.
1 Star for the name Thelonious Monk. 1 Star for the album cover. 1 star for the unexpected bop “Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are”
I am not a jazz fan overall and so this is not down my alley. I think this is enjoyable as background music, but I am not the target audience. Jazz seems like something a person has to understand and I probably do not "get it" to opine intelligently.
jazz
Lepposasti meni kuunnellessa.
No tää oli ihan ok. 3.5/5.
3,5! Herätti ilon tunteita.
Okay
Monk & Rollins 1957 - Hard Bop Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are Bemsha Swing. Monk plays the celeste on Pannonica
One of the big Jazz players that I’ve never really listened to. Bemsha Swing a favourite for me.
This album may as well exist to prove that just because I am into jazz, not all jazz may be into me. I don't HATE it, but it's challenging enough for me to take pause. I kind of got used to this album as I went on, though I had to pause to scrounge up a better upload of one of the songs, which kind of dampened my mood a bit. C'mon Internet, get it together!
Easy listenin'
Sure it's bop, but is it *hard bop*? Seems a bit soft to me
I don't think i have the technical understanding to enjoy this album. It was fine but I know i'm missing something.
Mink :)
This is an interesting album. I think with time it could grow on me a little more. With Thelonious Monk, I definitely prefer what they inspired, rather than their actual music itself, but the musicianship on this album is outstanding. The Piano playing is exceptional, the chemistry between the musicians is easy to hear. I've always found jazz a difficult listen, and, for me personally, not rewarding enough for how difficult i find it. I did recognise one of the song that was covered on RHCP's 94 compilation Out In LA in the show F.U., it was nice to hear the original source Unsure of how to rate it, I can't see a scenario where I'd go back and listen to it, but the musicianship is outstanding, so I'm between a TWO and a THREE
It was definitely a jazz
Instrumental, good for working to.
i really liked a lot of elements throughout it but i wasnt blown away which i guess is silly because monk is an excellent jazz musician but i do like very specific jazz and this was close but not quite it i also dont know who the 5th person is in the album cover unless none of the four people mentioned on the cover are these people
We have a few different styles here. The star track is the titular opener, a very unconventional style that seems to do whatever it feels like. It's highly unpredictable, with repetition as if the song is glitching out like a scratched record, very sudden tempo and key changes, and instruments randomly phasing in and out. "Ba-Lue" is a rhythmic blues track. A pleasant follow-up to "Brilliant Corners" but nothing too crazy, although I did really like the drums near the end. Tiresome for attentive listening, which is inconsistent with the titular track. "Pannonica" sounds like it could be a Frank Sinatra song with its traditional pop structure. Goes a bit too long and repeats itself too much but otherwise a really pleasant track. He tries to do a few things to spice it up, by change the key several times in the middle, or playing the last main part chord a half step higher, but it still feels tiresome. "I Surrender Dear" is a subtle yet forgettable calming piano piece you'd find in the background of a nice restaurant. The weakest link and doesn't match the vibe of the others, but fortunately the shortest. "Bemsha Swing" is wild hard bop that really brings out the groove to dance to, super catchy. Get a bit chaotic, especially those deep hollow sporadic drums, but the instruments seem at war with each other. An essential track that shows his talent. Looking back, it's quite an inconsistent record but displays Monk's talent during the height of his career. The opener and closer draw your attention the whole time, while the others seem to be meant for background listening. It seems like he put most of his energy into the title track, but at least the others have quite a bit to offer.
Was okay. Liked how some songs started kinda wacky, like Pannonica. Overall not bad.
This is great, I love some relaxing Jazz that makes me feel apart of high society. Such a nice kick back album listen to.
This is the type of jazz that makes non-jazz fans immediately turn jazz off. But it's also the type of jazz that, once you appreciate other forms of jazz, you come back to also appreciate. What a genre. Favorite track: Bemsha Swing
the best thing about Thelonious Monk is that its the name of a dude and not a band name. what a heroic name. as for the music, well i don't have a jazz ear but this is fair enough background music.
Why have abs when you can have kebabs?
Weird and complex. Like Monk, but not a favourite
I don’t know enough about jazz to distinguish any of it. But it’s fine.
Nice….
- Really proggy jazz - Great lounge music, not something I'd deep listen to - 2.5 but I'll give it a 3
- wonderful dinner jazz - 5 songs 42 minutes are some unreal numbers
Piano jazz business, I'm sure it's good I just don't have much of a taste for jazz! The documentary Straight No Chaser is fantastic so he does have that going for him!
Forgettable non-offensive jazz album. People really love TM, and i have yet to jive.
Listened to this album a bit ago and forgot to rate. I can't say I really remember anything about it.
jaaaaazzzzzzz toot toot
I really tried to like it, but I just think it's fine as background music
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Bemsha Swing (5) 2 - Brilliant Corners (1) 3 - I Surrender, Dear (4)
Sure. Why not?
smooooooooooooove Rox
Decent jazz record, although some songs go on too long for my liking and are a bit too abstract.
Awesome
I was really excited when this came up as I've not connected with it before, but was confident I would with time. Unfortunately that's not really happened. It's fine, but doesn't do as much for me as I had hoped.
Jazz
Pleasant music to listen to. It's more of background music or lobby music than something I listen to actively.
Just hard for me get into jazz like this, at least right now.
After all the jazz albums I've gotten on this list, something really needs to stand out to get above a 3. This album had no such thing and was once again ambient jazz I would hear at a nice restaurant or a 50s-themed bar. Does its job of being background noise but nothing beyond that for me. I'm sure this was some revolutionary jazz album or whatever but I don't care.
I mean it’s easy enough to tell that this album is packed with a truly insane amount of talent and innovation. It’s just more difficult for this ignorant brain to grasp it all. Easy and enjoyable even if it didn’t grip me.
Sorry, too much of a pleb to really enjoy this.
Was okay.
Late 50s jazz, ok. Not much to say. It did a jazz thing for 45 minutes. Wasn't unbearable, wouldn't listen again. 3/5.
I like jazz but this didn't really do anything for me. My attention wavered a lot.
Jazzy halt
Another fun jazz album that I hadn’t heard before. Perfect music for listening to whilst doing something else, probably wouldn’t listen to this particular album on its own in the same way I would with Zombie from a few days ago
Chill
I had this playing while I drove around town today. Sounds great. I wouldn't choose to listen to it, but it wasn't bad.
Starts off good then it quickly becomes "just a jazz album" to me. I didn't dislike it, but I will certainly never listen to it by choice again. It would be great background music. I dont really get jazz. I doubt that I ever will.
Definitely a really solid record, but unfortunately not my favourite genre of music. In conclusion, a good album but nothing special for me.
smoov. 3.
Jazzy background music!
I really like track 1,4,5 - 2 and 3 meh. 3 stars I guess
Good jazz I guess. I'm just not a jazz girl. What can I say
-instrumental not my style, respect it though -would be cool for the background at a party or something -didn’t add to playlist, but listenable when wanting to relax maybe FAVORITE: Ba-lue Bolivar Ba-lues-are
Maittavaa pianovoittoista jazzia. 3/5
Unwanted gayle thoughts
Brilliant corners more like brilliant album
Decent.
Not bad.
5/10. Maybe a 6, but honestly I found this a little boring.
Very interesting and unconventional playing that plays games with your musical expectations. Cool to be exposed to this legend!
Interesting but long
There are some really impressive solos on this but unfortunately none of the heads are especially memorable
Dobar. 3+.
It's pretty like an attractive figure you see across a city square. It won't create a gravitational pull to them, nor leave you flustered. Just something to look at, feel a little warm, and forget about the whole thing 15 minutes later.
jazz! interested me quite a bit, but it wasn’t my favorite.
Nice, rly like Pannonica, just some good ol' jazz
I can appreciate the skill of the piano playing and improvisation, but modern jazz just doesn't grab me much
I've heard this one before. It's a decent jazz album.
I like the drumming.
easy listening jazz
i liked it but not super into it, like >6 but <7 i think
Do you like jazz?
Got a little more country then I expected but not bad
I'm not really a jazz person but I did enjoy this. Felt like I was transported to another time - to think this was recorded in the late 50s is remarkable.
It’s Jazz!
As I pressed play I wondered if I was going to be able to get through this whole album and considered skipping. I decided to persevere and after getting through the first two tracks which were, to my untrained, jazz-neglected ears, unlistenable, I was treated to the beautiful Pannonica. This was a lovely listen which put me in a state of relaxation and pure listening. The remainder of the album was somewhat enjoyable, much more so than the first two songs.
It's good, but I'm just not cool enough to appreciate jazz. Just kinda bores me. 3 stars.
Again, I’m not an expert in jazz, and especially not in anything outside the fusion subgenre, but Monk is always a pleasant listen. Smooth and cool without being smooth or cool jazz. Rollins, Chambers, and Roach feature here, and they’re exquisite, just the kind of guys a weird and demanding band leader like Monk needs to play his challenging compositions.
Bluessss
Hyggelig jazz.
Still don't find Jazz comfortable
Not my thing, good but not for me
It is a jazz album.
As jazz goes, I found this much more bearable than usual.
Probably the reason that people say that jazz is just a bunch of wrong notes in a weird time progression. I love it 3 6:47 second track and 7:58?
Feels uncomfortable and I need to be very active to take in.
Grew on me. Excellent for the right mood but probably not something I’d listen to too often
It’s a late 50s jazz album, like what am I supposed to say lol
One of my favorite jazz albums. 3.5/5
An undeniably cool listen. I liked that even though it's Thelonious Monk's album, the other instrumentalists also had their times to shine. This would be a good album to have on while I'm working.
Bebop is so hard to listen to
Was never much into Jazz, although I can appreciate the improvisational aspect of the style. Some good tracks here.
Long instrumental jazz songs in a short album. Loved it. One song got added to the 10 minute songs playlist. No guitar big sad.
I can appreciate this, but I wouldn't choose it to listen to again.
I definitely want to give jazz more of a listen and decide how I feel about it. This album was nice to listen to in the car, but it didn't really grab my attention in a pleasing way. I will give more of his discography a listen and form a better opinion. Enjoyable.
Fun jazz album by one of the masters.
The title track certainly grabs your attention. It walks and talks like jazz, but something about it just hits differently and doesn't follow the typical jazz "composition". This general idea carries on throughout the album; if this isn't an example of or at least adjacent to improvisational jazz, I don't know what is. I decided to average this out at about a 3, as my personal enjoyment of this was fairly low, but my respect is high for the technical ability displayed on this album.
Good instrumental music
Decent, but I think a little stripped-back for my taste. Instrument playing is great, but they tend to isolate and perform solos often, which I think limits the cohesion between the members. 5/10
Nice to hear some jazz for a change
Yep, that’s jazz alright
How to compare this with a Byrds album, for example? Pushing the limits of 'popular music' as the subject of this list? Anyway - I enjoyed it.
The kind of stuff that you hear in coffee shops and boutique stores. For me, this music is good in those contexts, but not much else.
Monk est parmi mes jazzmans préférés. J'adore la pièce Brilliant Corners.
Jazz. Nice.
A great jazz record. I would LOVE this if I was listening to it in a gloomy jazz bar in Chicago, or Harry Bosch's glass shoebox apartment overlooking LA. Since I listened in my very nice UK suburban kitchen, I merely very much enjoyed it. 65 years old and timeless. 3.5/5
Liked it 👍, but I'm kinda a jazz dummy. Explorative, and chill
This was easy to listen to. Felt like I could have been relaxing in a big book shop or coffee shop
I like Monk, but this isn’t my favourite stuff.
This was just average. Nothing really blew me away here, and it did not exceed my expectations.
25th March 2022 Listened in the morning on the way back from the gym then finished in the office. When I was younger I wanted to be a suave man about London, in a high powered job listening to this sort of music. It reminded me of that.
Bom.
Reminds me of peanuts
A good if not wholly memorable jazz LP. The performances are fluid and graceful, just not anything I think will stick in my memory.
Groovy
good enough
The almighty Thelonious CLUNK. Inimitable voice on the piano.
It's not my kind of music.
Soulful tunes, very lounge style musical feeling.
Loved it.
Jazzin good time
Loved it. Fresh sounding and laid back, really beautiful compositions, not veering too far into free jazz mumblings, full of joy and groove
6/10
3/5, idk
Nice.
It get's a bit boring after a while
Don’t know why, but I was never able to get in sync with Monk’s music, not to the same level I dig many of his compatriots.
Easy, peaceful, melodious Thelonious at his finest.
6/10
I love the name but it was the sort of album where the racks were indistinguishable from each other. Easy listening, alright
Don't really know how to speak intelligently about jazz. But I liked this. Highlights: Pannonica; I Surrender, Dear; Bemsha Swing
Nice background music and I get that Thelonious is amazing - just not my listening to music cup of tea
All I knew about Thelonius Monk was he was a pianist. Quite pleased by the amount of horns. Pretty good. Enjoyed myself
Not one I would ever have just chosen to listen to, but I quite enjoyed it. Look forward to hearing more jazz, and learning more about it
Liked it…. Jazz is easy listening
Maybe
Not heard before. I don’t really have the tools to “analyse” jazz. I also need to listen multiple times. I enjoyed it enough that I will do so, but can’t really rate it fairly until I have.
Yummy jazz
Not exactly easy listening Jazz. It's difficult to listen to and was apparently difficult for the musicians too. You'll get occasional slabs of "standard jazz" but then dissonant notes, weird time signatures will make an appearance. Not for everyone: Best Tracks: Brilliant Corners; Ba-Lue Boliver Ba-Lues-Are; Bemsha Swing
Ok men for langt og kedeligt
Pretty cool.
Jazzy Jeff and the Bum Drum Explosions
Good, relaxing jazz, nice to listen to while doing work. Nothing crazy except for the last one, which I really liked Saved: Bemsha Swing*
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Bemsha Swing Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: I'll give Thelonious this much: he does have a distinctive sound. Title track sounds super complex, I bet music theory nerds go googoogaga over the minor-minor-Aflat-Zmajor nonsense going on. I will stick to saying that yup, this is jazz.
I’m sure this is great. I’ve just never gotten into jazz so it’s hard for me to judge! Seems a bit unfair on both accounts so I’ll give 3 stars
Go Jazz, dock slår det aldrig Miles Davis
Good jazz album.
If I enjoyed hard bop I’d rate it higher.
I'm surprised I liked a jazz album it was groovy
