Brilliant Corners

Jazz is one of those things where fans get so into it that I'm left feeling I'm missing something. It must be me, right, if people can be so obsessed they could reel off every band member for each recording of every song while I'm sat there going, meh? I did wonder how I knew the tune for Bemsha Swing, then I remembered it was used for F.U. by the chili peppers - so that's an embarrassing admission of my own cultural touchstones, I suppose

I’m just not a jazz fan. I never have been and probably never will be. With that, I can’t pretend this isn’t good… it’s just not for me.

Unfortunately jazz that makes you feel cool just isn’t as awesome as jazz that makes you feel like sitting in the sun

Clearly there is a lot of talent on display here but the album itself feels like it's lacking. The complex and innovative composition falls flat for me when nothing else is really driving the music. That's not to say that it isn't enjoyable to listen to, it definitely is. Perhaps a few more listens would help me in appreciating it more.

Monky business

I liked this much more than the Miles Davis, but as I don't see myself listening to this again - I give it a 3. Enjoyable, but not memorable.

I tend to tune out jazz. It sets a nice mood though.

Classic late-night jazz. That's about the only time I listen to this genre, but I enjoyed this one in that context.

This was my fav jazz album we've had so far after 200+ albums. When I saw that it was released in 1957 I didn't expect it to sound like it could have been recorded in the past few years.

A lot more piano than I anticipated, but in a good way. Not the style of music I want to listen to on the daily but tolerable.

Even I have heard of Thelonious Monk. According to the wiki article they recorded 25 takes of the title track and even after that they had to combine several of those takes in the final record. This perfectly illustrates my biggest problem with Jazz, too much technique too little emotion. So yet another Jazz album I don't give a fig about.

A nice, grooving jazz album. Can’t say much stood out to me, but it also didn’t offend either. Nice bass lines in a lot of the songs. I’d put it on as background music in the future.

I liked this album, a few jazz essentials that I recognized and was glad to hear after a long time not listening to anything jazz that wasn't on the big or small screen. Would listen again, but only after a few years.

I felt that I should have liked this album much more than I did. For some reason, it sounded a bit repetitive to me. Maybe I'll give it another chance on another day.

Second Jazz album in a row - and I am not the hugest Jazz fan. It's okay music, you can listen to it in the background it just not that I am going to remember anything from it tomorrow or ever going to say: remember that great album, let's listen to it again. But it has nice melodies and a nice saxophone. I can imagine if you are into Jazz, that you can really enjoy this one.

Classic sounding jazz but maybe I’m just not a huge jazz fan, just feels repetitive and like the same thing after a while like you could just loop 10 minutes and it would all be the same

7/10 I always dread the Jazz ones, but this wasn’t bad at all. Excellent vibe, not boring like most so far. Great musicianship, piano excellent, bass propulsive, loved some of the drums. Sax good, even better when more brass joined. Best: Bemsha Swing

67 jaar na dato klinkt de opname nog wel fris, maar voor mij zit dit soort muziek toch te veel in het hokje 'artsy fartsy tingeltoeterjazz die het hart niet echt beroert'. Op een concert zou ik de neiging hebben om bier te gaan halen en erdoorheen te gaan kletsen...

Jazz vind ik altijd moeilijk te beoordelen. Jazz is sowieso veel improvisatie, maar ik onderscheid ze vaak in 2 categorieën. De eerste is megadruk en chaotisch, heel vermoeiend. In de tweede is iets meer lijn te ontdekken. Thelonious heeft er iets meer lijn in gelukkig. Als ik op de wiki ga zoeken wat hem nu zo uniek maakt, dan begrijp ik eruit dat hij op een andere manier piano speelt. Namelijk met vlakke vingers op de toetsen rossen, als een olifant, of zoals ik eerder zou zeggen een boer. Mij valt dat niet zo op, dat de toetsen extra hard en vlak doorkomen. Meer dat de drums een soort doffe schellen zijn. Leuk hoekje om af en toe in verzeild te raken, maar verre van briljant wat mij betreft.

Reconozco que el jazz me supera. Puedo entender melodías y, a veces, incluso empatizar, “sentir” la musicalidad, pero todo lo demás, el academicismo, la improvisación, los colores, etc., todo eso me pasa por encima.

There used to be a jazz and sushi restaurant in Cambridge, MA called Thelonious Monkfish. I went once, it was pretty good. It's still there, but apparently they had to change the name because his estate got mad. Kind of weak if we're being honest. This has nothing to do with the quality of the album, but I don't have much to say about that so I'm writing this instead. The internet says this is "hard bop" jazz. I'm not sure what that means, but it sounds pretty bass-heavy to me, lots of low plodding bass notes. It's generally nice in the way that jazz in the background is nice to me, but not a whole lot standing out otherwise. I'm so bad at writing jazz reviews, for like 95% of these I just feel like it's good for what it is and the artist is clearly super talented but it's hard to compare to other genres. Oh well, it is what it is. This was nice. Favorite song: Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are Other: Brilliant Corners, Bemsha Swing 7/1/24

Kind of forgettable as an album, none of the tracks were interesting in terms of instrumental, Which is kinda disappointing. Something you pick up once and that's it.

Finally a jazz album that's not Miles Davis or John Coltrane. A very complex, heady and musically rich sounding album that could also put you to a trance or sleep if you're tired. Opening track is very heady and abstract. The track Pannonica with its jingle bells and slow tempo almost feels like a lullaby. Overall an album to listen to if you want to listen to more jazz.

Monk's sense of time and choppy style are a bit jarring and takes some getting used to, his music often sounds a bit off. I enjoy some Monk every now and then when the mood hits me but this wouldn't be my top choice. I enjoyed this overall especially when compared to a lot of the other dreck I've been getting lately. More jazz please!

Like most jazz it all sounds the same to me, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Some very creative and interesting jazz, but it's also not totally my thing. The tracks had great buildup and performance, with the title track probably being my favorite.

As much as I love to see some more jazz on the list, Monk isn't a huge favourite of mine, and neither is this album. The line up is fantastic, Rollins on sax, Roach on drums, Chambers on bass, it should be fantastic but instead it's just good. Worth a listen but doesn't bring out much excitement in me.

i liked it all but the best were pannonica bemsha swing. nothing else really stood out to me, although it was all pleasant listening.

Enjoyed this! This felt a little unpolished tho? Even accomodating for this style, it still seems that way? Also I’ve gotten used to really modern production so this was a bit jarring for me.

You need more than a day to absorb this. But will probably return to it on my continuing mid life jazz discovery. Actually not the most modern sounding for the late 50s, but nicely recorded and very classic. Nice.

I'm reading the novel Erasure at the moment with the main character Thelonious 'Monk' Ellison, and this is the point where I realise why he has his nickname. To the music... it's ok. It's not particularly special. It sounds kind of generic, and doesn't appear (to me) to be doing anything that interesting or different. It just kind of plods along. It's pretty harmless in itself, and easy enough to listen to, which is about all I can say for it. 2.5 rounded up.

I can appreciate this. The big band vibe makes it more soulful and fun, as opposed to other jazz records that seem so much like an exercise in technicalities that they lose out on emotion. Very good, Mr. Theolonious Monk! You made me feel something with your jazz. Standouts are Pannonica and Bemsha Swing.

Monk is one of the best pianists of jazz music. You will always here his distinct brilliant style that shows how important rhythm is. I'm not sure though if this album is the best example of his talent. His band mates are great but they overshadow up a bit of his talent I find Maybe it's just me but I prefer Monk with very sparse co-instrumentation.

Nice smooth jazz good for entry level listening or those with a more experienced ear. 3.5/5

This was nice enough. It is not as good as some of the other jazz I’ve heard so far from this list, so it’s just a 3 for me.

Some parts border on the anxiety inducing type of jazz that I can't get into. Overall, the good outweighs the bad.

Nice piano work from Monk. Pannonia was the highlight for me. Some early improv stuff from Sonny Rollins on the title track, which I guess was interesting.

Probably good if you like jazz. I don’t.

In a train station not too far from here, there is a piano that anyone can sit at and play. Sometimes Monk sounds like the drunk guy who plonks himself there at 11.30 at night and hammers away. Grossly unfair, I know, but sometimes this record is a tough listen, unlike, for example, the be-bop offerings of Parker et al or the later genius of, say, Miles and Gil Evans. Technically, I have no doubt that this is all very impressive but it ain't always enjoyable. I will, however, persevere (I bought the damn CD, for Christ's sake...).

I really didn't give it a hard listen, the first track I found a little squirrely the second track was more melodic, Rollin's sax was sweet. I have to revisit, I'm not familiar with T. Monk classics.

The drum solo in Ba-Lue was extremely swingin. The other songs were pretty good. Idk, I don’t love listening to jazz but this is a good jazz album. 6.5/10

6/10 - Pretty good but I need to be in the right mood to listen to jazz. That mood was not when i was listening to it. Insaneintherain made a jazz cover of pokemon songs that I absolutely love because he took the songs that I liked and made them even more jazzy which was great. Sometimes jazz on its own does not do it for me.

I am too uncultured to properly appreciate jazz, but this seemed good.

Like Thelonious Monk and his cast of all-star musicians on this album. He is, obviously, a virtuoso and his playing goes from lyrical and melodic, to chaotic and all over the place, often from bar to bar. Not 'easy' to listen to but it is enjoyable in the be-bop, late 50's jazz style.

First Jazz album since we started this that I actually enjoyed all the way through. The structure within this album was like a warm embrace compared to the chaotic madness that was Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew."

Coming from someone who isn't very well-versed in jazz, this album seems like a good place to start. It strikes a nice balance of the familiar and the more abstract side of the genre so it doesn't feel overwhelming for a newbie.

Monk is Monk — not quite my cup of tea, but a legend for a reason.

I have limited exposure to jazz, so it's difficult for me to assess this album from a critical perspective. I find it to be easy to listen to, seems to be improvisational as many songs tended to lead me along a journey through various small sets of different instruments/rhythms.

Could be a 4 but there's so much going on it's almost stressful to listen to at times

I didn't like this as much as I hoped (as I wanted to somehow surprise myself and be really into jazz), but I liked it more than I'd feared (as I thought my brain would completely reject it). Wouldn't mind listening to this again, although odds are low I'll actually do it.

At some point there should be a cut off for how far back you should be able to listen to music. Music absolutely got better with time. Even if you don’t agree with that, it’s undeniable that the recording equipment is better and makes the music crisper and sharper today. With that being said, the music was way better than I expected it to be. And I wanted it to be bad to prove a point. It’s just funny to be listening to what my grandparents were probably listening to at my age. I’m not the best at rating Jazz because I don’t listen to it enough to know what’s good and bad. I’ll just say it was pleasant and leave it at that 6/10

Colgate hour

I used to be into Thelonius Monk back in the early aughts. Lately, it doesn’t do it for me. Sadly, that is partly due to a shortened attention span that comes with a phone addiction. What I did find interesting to learn in the liner notes was how Monk was a mentor to Sonny Rollins on this album, and later to John Coltrane.

Not really my taste in music. I hope someday to appreciate it more

Jazz again. He is super good but jaaaazzzzzzz

Adding to the jazz rotation. Probably didn’t get the weirder bits but it was listenable to an untrained ear and maybe less overplayed than some other greats.

Good jazz album. The start of the album is a little more fast-paced and “jumpy”, but it eventually transitions to something more along the lines of smooth jazz. Good album to put on in the background.

Technically very impressive, but I'm not sure that I had that much fun listening to it. I do enjoy some jazz, but this didn't hit right for me. I'm sure I would feel differently if I'd been listening to it in a whisky bar with a cigar, but I wasn't. I was sat at my desk working.

I enjoy Jazz in person but don’t typically listen to it in my spare time. This album was solid and enjoyable, and it’s easy to hear and admire the sheer talent of Monk and his mates.

went to sdsu football game last night with dad, roy, tomas. genuinely might have been the most atrocious game of football I've ever watched. state lost 0-6 to nevada. this morning I had my first game back since the knee injury, didn't play but suited up. tied 2-2, we went 2-1 up in the last couple minutes but moss had a howler. can't blame the guy tho cause I've choked games a lot worse than that I don't understand jazz a lot but it was a fun album to listen to

3/5. It definitely is jazz and although the first song is wild to listen to, the album has some other pretty good ones. There feels like there is tension despite the quiet nature of most of the instruments. Like I am waiting for something to happen and it never does. Not bad, but definitely had me on edge while listening!

3 stars, because I don't actively enjoy it despite its quality I've never had the know-how required to appreciate jazz. This album didn't change that. It's fun to interpret a solo's emotional content as if it were a one-way conversation or speech of some sort, but that's as deep as I can get.

A really nice listen, but it's jazz, and therefore it's never going to score mega highly with me. I like the idea of jazz, but the reality just doesn't get me going. This is perfectly nice background music, it's smooth, with a bit of oomph to keep you interested, but not enough drama. 3/5.

Compared to other Jazz albums this seems to lack a bit of soul. It gets a bit boring towards the middle, but still a decent listen.

Monk had several moments of impressive craftsmanship, but as a whole, this album rarely reached the heights that many of his groundbreaking contemporaries were able to.

I am not a jazz fan overall and so this is not down my alley. I think this is enjoyable as background music, but I am not the target audience. Jazz seems like something a person has to understand and I probably do not "get it" to opine intelligently.

Monk & Rollins 1957 - Hard Bop Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are Bemsha Swing. Monk plays the celeste on Pannonica

One of the big Jazz players that I’ve never really listened to. Bemsha Swing a favourite for me.

This album may as well exist to prove that just because I am into jazz, not all jazz may be into me. I don't HATE it, but it's challenging enough for me to take pause. I kind of got used to this album as I went on, though I had to pause to scrounge up a better upload of one of the songs, which kind of dampened my mood a bit. C'mon Internet, get it together!

Sure it's bop, but is it *hard bop*? Seems a bit soft to me

I don't think i have the technical understanding to enjoy this album. It was fine but I know i'm missing something.

This is an interesting album. I think with time it could grow on me a little more. With Thelonious Monk, I definitely prefer what they inspired, rather than their actual music itself, but the musicianship on this album is outstanding. The Piano playing is exceptional, the chemistry between the musicians is easy to hear. I've always found jazz a difficult listen, and, for me personally, not rewarding enough for how difficult i find it. I did recognise one of the song that was covered on RHCP's 94 compilation Out In LA in the show F.U., it was nice to hear the original source Unsure of how to rate it, I can't see a scenario where I'd go back and listen to it, but the musicianship is outstanding, so I'm between a TWO and a THREE

i really liked a lot of elements throughout it but i wasnt blown away which i guess is silly because monk is an excellent jazz musician but i do like very specific jazz and this was close but not quite it i also dont know who the 5th person is in the album cover unless none of the four people mentioned on the cover are these people

We have a few different styles here. The star track is the titular opener, a very unconventional style that seems to do whatever it feels like. It's highly unpredictable, with repetition as if the song is glitching out like a scratched record, very sudden tempo and key changes, and instruments randomly phasing in and out. "Ba-Lue" is a rhythmic blues track. A pleasant follow-up to "Brilliant Corners" but nothing too crazy, although I did really like the drums near the end. Tiresome for attentive listening, which is inconsistent with the titular track. "Pannonica" sounds like it could be a Frank Sinatra song with its traditional pop structure. Goes a bit too long and repeats itself too much but otherwise a really pleasant track. He tries to do a few things to spice it up, by change the key several times in the middle, or playing the last main part chord a half step higher, but it still feels tiresome. "I Surrender Dear" is a subtle yet forgettable calming piano piece you'd find in the background of a nice restaurant. The weakest link and doesn't match the vibe of the others, but fortunately the shortest. "Bemsha Swing" is wild hard bop that really brings out the groove to dance to, super catchy. Get a bit chaotic, especially those deep hollow sporadic drums, but the instruments seem at war with each other. An essential track that shows his talent. Looking back, it's quite an inconsistent record but displays Monk's talent during the height of his career. The opener and closer draw your attention the whole time, while the others seem to be meant for background listening. It seems like he put most of his energy into the title track, but at least the others have quite a bit to offer.

Was okay. Liked how some songs started kinda wacky, like Pannonica. Overall not bad.

This is great, I love some relaxing Jazz that makes me feel apart of high society. Such a nice kick back album listen to.

This is the type of jazz that makes non-jazz fans immediately turn jazz off. But it's also the type of jazz that, once you appreciate other forms of jazz, you come back to also appreciate. What a genre. Favorite track: Bemsha Swing

the best thing about Thelonious Monk is that its the name of a dude and not a band name. what a heroic name. as for the music, well i don't have a jazz ear but this is fair enough background music.

Piano jazz business, I'm sure it's good I just don't have much of a taste for jazz! The documentary Straight No Chaser is fantastic so he does have that going for him!

Forgettable non-offensive jazz album. People really love TM, and i have yet to jive.

I was really excited when this came up as I've not connected with it before, but was confident I would with time. Unfortunately that's not really happened. It's fine, but doesn't do as much for me as I had hoped.

Pleasant music to listen to. It's more of background music or lobby music than something I listen to actively.

Just hard for me get into jazz like this, at least right now.

After all the jazz albums I've gotten on this list, something really needs to stand out to get above a 3. This album had no such thing and was once again ambient jazz I would hear at a nice restaurant or a 50s-themed bar. Does its job of being background noise but nothing beyond that for me. I'm sure this was some revolutionary jazz album or whatever but I don't care.

I mean it’s easy enough to tell that this album is packed with a truly insane amount of talent and innovation. It’s just more difficult for this ignorant brain to grasp it all. Easy and enjoyable even if it didn’t grip me.

Late 50s jazz, ok. Not much to say. It did a jazz thing for 45 minutes. Wasn't unbearable, wouldn't listen again. 3/5.

I like jazz but this didn't really do anything for me. My attention wavered a lot.

Another fun jazz album that I hadn’t heard before. Perfect music for listening to whilst doing something else, probably wouldn’t listen to this particular album on its own in the same way I would with Zombie from a few days ago

I had this playing while I drove around town today. Sounds great. I wouldn't choose to listen to it, but it wasn't bad.

Starts off good then it quickly becomes "just a jazz album" to me. I didn't dislike it, but I will certainly never listen to it by choice again. It would be great background music. I dont really get jazz. I doubt that I ever will.
