Reviews (page 7 of 10)

Generally I don't like techno albums but I didn't mind this one...

Some absolute bangers on this, it ended strong, but a few of the opening tracks really didn't grab me. The harder the track, the bigger my appreciation was. The slower stuff felt weak and underdeveloped. It's a fun album and very glad to have finally given it a full listen. It felt a bit more dated than other electronic albums of this time, maybe because it was far more influential. 3.5/5 Fav track:Alive

it's okay

This album is decent, as I'm sure was expected from Daft Punk. I mean, I was hoping for a bit better, but this first outing gets the job done and there's some great songs here. You can really hear the influence it would have on acts like Justice. So, instead, let me take the time to ask: Where's Discovery? The far more iconic and very obviously better album from the duo, it seems extremely weird that it is omitted from this list, as it had just as much influence if not more as this album, and does not go on too long or start to become background noise like this album. That album would be a five, no doubtm this one? No where near as close, sadly.

I'm not going to lie, getting through this was a bit of a grind. It probably doesn't help that I was listening to it in the middle of the day while trying to work; if I was at a party having a boogie it would be a solid option. I think later era Daft Punk (Random Access Memories) is much more my vibe.

They definitely front-loaded the album with the better material. I was really vibing for like 30 minutes then it became incredibly annoying and hard to listen to. Still the best dance album I've gotten on here so far.

Gostei, nota 3 kkk

Still a good record but I somehow did not enjoy it as much as I thought.

A couple good tracks, but some is rough on the ear after a while. I prefer listening to their shorter tunes and top hits.

The production is top tier and I have to respect that, even though I usually don’t care about it. For a debut album, it’s fairly good. It’s clear they’re still finding their footing, but they also have a defined and unique style that will stay with them for all albums. My biggest complaints are that both the lyrics and beats are too repetitive. Also, I, personally, am not a huge of instrumentals, but Daft Punk does it best. 3/5

These seem to be pretty much demos. Cool, but they’ve released better.

As noted in other reviews, starts off ok but becomes repeditive

just beats

Fun background music, it has some good moments.

It was good.

It's a nice change to listen to songs without lyrics and it made for good background noise on my journey home but no songs in particular stood out.

is repeating the same joke about repetition showing higher levels of wit or stupidity? is it a meta joke where the repeating of the joke hammers home the comedy of the original repetition or is it just plain unoriginal and lacking in ingenuity? Is me questioning it also part of the meta or am i retarded for going down this road? why do i bother?

Like a dangerous loaf of bread, all dressed up for a night out playing hockey with the boys.

Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world Around the world, around the world

I could not get behind this album just about everything was repetitive, was not one of my favorite albums however I know they have one good music and will need to try some more.

The album itself is pretty mediocre, but through all these samples and riffs, you can see the embryo of something great.

Mostly mid but a handful of tracks that I wouldn't mind listening to again. Most likely due to nostalgia though so I can't really recommend it.

I thought I liked them back in the day but turns out I probably just liked their singles. No more needs to be said

There is a huge discrepancy between how much I want to like this album listening at home and my actual enjoyment. I remember sitting in the chill-out rooms at raves and gabber parties and fully digging the beats and old style detroit sounds, I remember dancing on festivals until the early morning on the french electro of this duo, but it really has never transferred that magic to a home environment. Actually totally the opposite, it is just irking me and I want to skip most songs halfway through. So what to rate an album like that? I know how awesome this is in a live setting, how great, energetic and hypnotic this can be on the dancefloor, but as an album at home on speakers or headphones it just totally falls flat.

punk 🤘

3 A perfect album here somewhere, but gets tired, repetitive, and annoying in the back half

First things first, I should probably admit I am kond of "ehh" on EDM in general. That being said, "Homework" felt like a crazy rollercoaster that I wasn't exactly prepared for – but in a strangely good way. The album kicks off with "Daftendirekt," and I couldn't help but feel like I was being catapulted into some neon-lit universe of electronic soundscapes. The beats hit hard, and even for someone like me, it was impossible not to nod my head along. "Revolution 909" follows suit, and I got this intense urge to just move. Seriously, if you put this on at a party, I can't imagine anyone resisting the groove. It's got that unmistakable '90s flavor that feels simultaneously nostalgic and fresh. Then, there's "Around the World." I've heard this one before. It's the kind of track that could go on forever, and you wouldn't mind. You can't help but notice the experimentation going on. "Rollin' & Scratchin'" might sound a bit chaotic at first, and that feeling doesn't let up over 7 minutes. I hated this track. "Da Funk" is like the soundtrack to a late-night drive through a futuristic city, a finishing with "Alive" feels like the climax of an action movie where the hero finally triumphs.

Music to do your homework to! Also if your homework includes eating MDMA and dancing for hours, this is also for you. For me, I had this on while filtering through spreadsheets and emails, basically the same. Enjoyed this, especially "Alive".

For me, this is music to do chores to. Turn it up and get the blood flowing. But today I listened to this at work. So, I obviously just turned on my black lights, set the strobes bpm, and threw a rave.

Aint no Discovery!

not bad once settled in, otherwise just sounds scuffed

At times, infectious, but also monotonous.

I enjoyed Daft Punk's debut album quite a lot, especially the first part of the album, perhaps I was in for the mood tonight for this music. My main issue with the album was the repetitiveness of it which was even more a bit much because it a very long album with over 70 minutes. Still, the band's debut album was quite a good effort overall.

A few great songs but it's all very samey after a while

An album with some brilliant tracks, some palatable tracks and some tracks that I couldn’t listen to. Daft Punk crossed to and fro between sensible, yet brilliant, songs and off the wall music that only die hard fans could truly appreciate. This album epitomises that skill.

I think it’s been said already but a good album that gets a little repetitive. I just wanna know how they make the distinction between: Around the World at 4 mins? ❌ Around the World at 10 mins? ❌ Around the World at 7 mins? Oui oui 👌🏼

This was some good background work music but it isn't the Daft Punk music I truly enjoy.

This album is like a lot of other albums on this list. To me, a couple of good singles alone shouldn’t qualify an album for this list. I liked parts of this album but some of the sounds were so annoying, and certain songs could’ve been dropped to make it more enjoyable as a whole. Another 3/5 album for me.

Filler

i am going to find this one really hard to rate. some of these songs are somewhat nostalgic and conjured very specific memories from festivals that i thought i had forgotten and i can certainly admire the talent that daft punk has. however, it just isn't my usual type of thing.

The ideal state for listening to this is drunk in a club dancing. Unfortunately instead I am stone cold sober, at home with headphones on. It makes great background music for doing other things, since it's repetitive and doesn't really reward close listening.

It was ok

Fun! Makes you want to dance. My second favourite release of theirs.

I’m immediately much less forgiving of albums when they are so long. I love Daft Punk but this is far from their best work. It gets very repetitive after listening for a while.

Weird and fun. Wish I'd seen them live, for me is music to see live more than to play at home.

Could have easily been the most boring album ever made, but they keep adding a twist when I start to get bored. It's a good one, but not their best.

Groovy. Probably a little too straight-up dance for me; not much variety, overlong songs (particularly when it’s one I don’t care for). Still liked it mostly. Best song: Around the World

Me pone nervioso.

3.4/5 90s electronica

its just good!

I get why this music exists, but I don't really understand why anyone would listen to a while album of it in their home (unless they were a DJ that was previewing tracks).

Discovery is better, there are some cool tracks here, but a lot of the songs run too long and get a bit annoying.

Homework is a good Daft Punk album, but the songs are a bit repetitive. Discovery and Random Access Memory both do what Homework does better. Ultimately, if you want to hear these songs, I’d recommend listening to alive 2007 where the best songs of this album are remixed and integrated with other songs to cut down on the repetitiveness.

It's kinda nice listening to daft punk's first album.. that being said, it's just a bunch of phrases in a loop for 74 mins. Works well as bgm for studying/working out

Another debut album, akin to the Gorillaz, where I liked it less on a re-listen. Outside of a few of the singles, most of the Daft Punk songs I really love are on Discovery. It's good but not nearly as fleshed out as their later work. 3/5

It's passable, started off good but fell off pretty quickly, not their best work.

Wow. Fantastic sounds! Not sure it is music, but it sounds great - especially with the headphones on. With headphones 4/5 Without headphones 2.5/5 Average 3.5

El primero de Daft Punk. Meh.

Not my type of music But still enjoyed it

Dope production but very repetitive

Aardig debuut. leukste nummer: Da Funk De titel van het album leent zich van de productie: "the fact that we made the record at home, very cheaply, very quickly, and spontaneously, trying to do cool stuff" - Thomas Bangalter.

Very good!

I like Daft Punk, and I remember when the big singles from this album, Da Funk and Around the World, came out - I liked them a lot. But I can only take so much. For whatever reason, those singles didn't seem to wear out their welcome. But a lot of songs on this album do. A couple are cool and just right in length (Daftendirekt and Phoenix) but many are cool and just too long (Rock n Roll, Indo Silver Club). Others are just annoying from the get-go (Oh Yeah). These guys are great at what they do, but it's not quite for me - at least not for long stretches.

Not my favorite Daft Punk. It definitely has some shades of what was to to come, and shows these two know how to craft a beat, and loop, and occasionally a good hook, but not so much a song. I could see these tracks working in a club, but not so much an album. The repetition is grating. 2.5

Not my favorite Daft Punk, but pretty good. Everything kind of sounds like this now but I imagine that wasn't the case back when this came out.

Good as background music while you work on something, but not something that I would just sit and listen to. It has some intriguing mixes and the music is fun.

Some good memories, ok album, I think it might really be a 2.5 star in my heart.

I understand it was their first album (so an "exciting debut by a new artist!"), but they've done better. To be frank, I find a lot of the songs on here kind of boring -- they just go on and on. I happen to like trance, so I don't have a problem with a song that's just "four on the floor" and repetitive (e.g., "Alive" is very repetitive, yet good). But some of these songs just aren't that catchy. Some are really good, but a lot are not. Spotify's streaming stats back that up. Looking at Spotify streaming stats, there's only two songs off of here that make Daft Punk's top 10... and the rest of the songs aren't even really that close. (Admittedly, Spotify stats are skewed for songs that came out after Spotify became mainstream, but a Daft Punk album that came out four years after this one, still well before Spotify, has many more streams.) Daft Punk has better albums.

Decent trance club music. Could make some cool remixes on a DJ board, but probably wouldn’t listen just chillin.

The kings of electronica. Great background music, but not my type of music to listen to on the regular.

It was a pretty easy listen. Started off weird with first 3 songs, then it jammed. Would listen again.

A bit dry and repetitive. Alright as background music, but I found myself checking how much longer until it was over.

A much rawer and more experimental debut for the duo as compared to their follow-up efforts – the acid house/French touch influences aren't so much tinges as stains all over the album. The progressive layering of each track into something greater than its parts would take a backseat to cinematic bombast when 'Discovery' rolled around a few years later, but here it's easy to see the pair synthesizing the surrounding musical era (even giving a few facets a nod on 'Teachers') into something uniquely their own. Definitely overlong in terms of track arrangements, and not every sample/melody/beat combo hits, but an interesting retrospective nonetheless into an act that would come to dominate the electronic and house scenes down the line.

probably good

Weird one. Sounds like a lot of singles, some great, some average and some fillers.

So I can’t say that electronic music is my favourite genre, not anything that could be found playing in night clubs. But Daft Punk have always had this catchy beat about them, somehow able to make the head bob or foot tap in any situation. Again I probably couldn’t think of any time when I would actually listen to this album, and ata well over an hour it is far too long. But it isn’t terrible. It’s not something I’d be adverse to having in again. I just can’t imagine that I would.

3/5 I was sadly disappointed. I didn't know there were so many songs on this album I didn't know, and now I know why. I was sure that the first Daft Punk that came up was going to be a 5/5. 😕 I didn't have the word for it but now I know they are probably a singles band. I'm holding out for Discovery which i know is better, although maybe it's a bunch of singles in one? #Sad

Good but their best was still to come.

A bit too much in the pure dance music camp for me - there are bits of this that I love, but there's just way too much repetition for me to want to listen to it, and I don't have the fond memories attached to it that others do. I just don't need to hear them say Around The World in autotune 144 times over the course of 7 minutes. The bits which aren't overly repetitive and have a bit of musical depth to them are really good - I love Da Funk and Fresh - but Christ the bits that don't are horrible - Rollin' & Scratchin' is the worse, but there are others too. Will give it a three on the strength of it paving the way for a lot more (including their own work that I prefer).

Not my jam but get that they are talented and innovative

Early Daft Punk with a house music vibe from clubs, i hadnt realised they had an album as far back as 97. There's only one commercial track around the world, but generally something that is playing and you'd move with in a club rather that sit down amd listen to as an album, if that makes sense. I've always liked Daft Punk, but feel their later stuff is more where they got their foothold on style of sound they produce.

Beep Beep Boop Boop

I totally understand some people finding this really grating, with tons of repetitiveness throughout, but damn some of these beats are good. I've had some solid head-bopping going on here. It is really long though and there's plenty of tracks that don't cut it. Overall, generally happy with this.

fucken great for distracting myself from my anxiety LOL, cleaned my room with this album on and enjoyed it tbh, favourite is fresh

Discovery is way better

their weakest album Ive heard first half isn't bad though

Demasiado "intenso" para un lunes in the morning (ONB) Funky y espacial, me ha gustado (ONN). Ritmito bueno para empezar la semana (LNM)

The album is a mix of funky and fun tracks like "Da Funk" and "Around the World," which showcase the group's unique blend of house and techno music. However, the album also has some slower, more repetitive tracks that may could not hold my attention.

I’m glad I listened to this once and enjoyed some of the tracks. I think this album would best be experienced as intended on the dance floor.

Started out great, even though it was repetitive everything had a good beat. But you can only do that for so long. Still good.

Never been to a dance club as my concerts are usually heavy music. So I haven't really been present where this style of music would really be at it's most relevant. And I certainly don't want to gatekeep but I have never understood how Daft Punk did well on the radio. Having said that, I liked this album. I recognized a few bars here and there and I enjoyed listening to this. I also have a soft spot in my heart for freshmen records that really knock it out of the park. And this seems to be one of those.

I'd have to be in da club in order to enjoy any of these songs. But I get it. Da Funk is instantly recognizable anywhere you are. I wonder how people would behave it this was playing in an elevator.

I thought the first half of the album was pretty strong, with Da Funk and Around the World really standing out. Then it took a turn at Rollin' & Scratchin' and I wasn't getting into the beat/vibe as much, it seemed a lot more experimental and was getting away from being a cool multi-layered driving dance track. Still, an interesting listen.

It all gets to sound a bit samey after a while. The standout tracks (Da Funk, Round The World etc) are excellent, but a single album would have been much better.

I like some of the Daft Punk I have heard but wasn’t really impressed by this album.

Interesting production values but the music does not really grab me - just my personal tastes I suppose....

Haven’t listened to these guys in a while. First time listening to the first album. Think my tastes have moved on, but still good to hear something different.

These are the kind of albums that throw me when I go to rate. I waffle between rating based on it's merits or rating based on my tastes. I'll probably lean toward the latter, which means that while I may think an album is great and really well made, the rating won't reflect that if it's not something I want to come back to. All that said, this album is incredibly cool. Great beats, unique sounds...just a fun, cool and lively vibe overall. But it's not somehting I can stay engaged with for 74 minutes. A lot of the songs drag on and on...and I get it...that's part of this genre. You get absorbed into it and it takes you somewhere different, lets you escape. It's just not the vibe that really grabs me. There's a lot of vibe music, drawn out, repititive that I really love (Kurt Vile is a huge one). It's just different elements that do it for me. Homework is very good, just not for me.

Love Daft Punk...this album gets a little long at times. Has some absolute bangers for I feel it has never resonated with me from a full album standpoint. 3.5/5

love around the world, and a good album, but a bit tedious

Very repetitive, but fun in a party context

I have never listened to this whole Daft Punk record, and it's a lot of Daft Punk--the CD era really churned out some albums that are way too long. I enjoyed this a ton, but it was tough to get though it all the way.

Littéralement avant qu'ils soient cools

Can't really go wrong with daft punk(I mean they're known around the world), wouldn't say it's my favorite daft punk album but still just a solid album

This is not my favourite daft punk album, but it has some bangers

Never really go into this one, I get why now. All the elements and sounds are there and many of these songs get remixed into perfection later in their carreer on Alive. But at this stage.. hard to enjoy, bar a few exceptions

Litt for langt og blir litt uinteressant i lengden

Although 'Around the World' is a one star song on its own, this is only a good record. It could have done with being 10 or 15 minutes shorter and is just too 'house' for my tastes to be given a 4 or 5.

Some bangers but a bit too long

Very very interesting

Surprisely dull, around the world is far too long, much better stuff out there by this duo

Tämän(kin) levyn synti on turhan pitkä kesto.

When he said “around the world” it really hit me

favourite song: around the world least favourite song: rollin' & scratchin' not really my sort of thing but can imagine it would be great if i wasnt sober.

Well you know, Daft Punk is great and all. There is still quite a lot of what I almost always find tedious in EDM... squelchy synthesizer sequences, repeated one thousand times. I realize it’s kind of the point but it treads a line with me and this one crossed that line a little more than some of their later work.

Some very interesting bits, some very repetitive bits

Missing the energy of the live album but fun to here the tunes in their original form.

ouf...

Some interesting sounds, with a lot of slow burner songs. Became too repetitive however, and the album was a good 20 minutes too long. Around the World my favourite song.

Not my cup of tea. Really repetitive. Surprisingly alright to work to though.

Bit too electronic/repetitive for me

Groundbreaking, house/edm album. Around the world is the most recognized track off the album.

It's got some great moments but does get a bit repetitive and is about 20 minutes too long

Not really my cup of tea. Not saying it's bad, this type of music just doesn't resonate with me.

House can be so boring unless you are in the vibe on the dance floor. This is the opposite. Radio playable. Stuck in your head. Simple but on another level.

I wanted to like this album a lot more but there’s definitely some weird filler throughout. Around the World is such a jam though.

Good if you're into house. Couple big hits on here.

Glimpses of the greatness to come.

Some great beats and dynamics, but a lot of poor ones as well with a long run time. The issue is after 1 minute, the beats become pointless to listen to.

this album exists as a groundwork for their remixed, so why not have one of their early live albums on this list instead? you have to be a masochist to listen to Around the World for 7 minutes, jesus christ.

Again not a bad album but I couldn't finish it because things definitely not my style of music.

Quite a few great songs on here, but also a collection of dull repetitive ones. I like all the hits and I sort of dislike the rest save for a few sleepers like Alive. Daft Punk hit with a sound of their own that was exciting and emulated in the clubs at the time. This music got a ton of asses shaking.

Favorite tracks: Da Funk, Fresh, Around the World

Quite familiar with DaftPunk but not the whole album. Well-crafted dance music, which is a bit monotonous in places, but probably does the job when you want to dance. Best in class.

Some high points. Some harsh moments. A ground breaking band for sure.

Mostly pretty average Daft Punk considering how good some of the later stuff is. But a few good moments.

A balancing act between brilliance and bloat. My soft spot for the group really wants to rate it higher, but so much of it simply needed to be cut, particularly the long run-time on tracks. This is best experienced in small doses.

Something something Around The World something something

Daft Punk works best in short bursts and when you're in the right mood. The singles work for me, the rest I can live without.

I think I can sat I enjoyed it, but it wasn't entirely for me. The production is immaculate, even today sounds great coming out of speakers. Just runs a little long for my taste. Favorite tracks: "Da Funk", "Around the World", "Alive"

Boring and overrated, but not absolute trash. There are some solid grooves on here. Maybe I just need some molly to appreciate it.

You could trim 20 minutes out of the middle of this and improve it immeasurably

Hmmmm, it's a little bit basic for my tastes. I want a splash of prog with my electronica, as a rule. Having said that, "Da Funk" is an absolute tune, and the music video came out around the time my family finally got cable, so I've got a lot of affection for the sad bloodhound man in a leg cast.... Fave track "Da Funk", duh.

Songs are often too long and many repetitive beats and sounds grate. If you're gonna put a Daft Punk album on a list like this, it should be Discovery.

4/17/2022 Today's Album: "Homework" by Daft Punk - Being the first album by legendary EDM outfit Daft Punk, this is really showing me their roots as musicians. This is essentially the spiritual successor to the Chemical Brothers, being that the album is mostly composed of remixed dance music and samples with very little music. Coming out in the tail end of the 90s, I would have to imagine that this is one of the first albums to really work with style and I think in a lot of aspects, it pioneers that sound in a fantastic way. The nature of EDM and club music is that it's just going to get boring after a little while. The shuffle beats and claps get repetitive after a while and although this is not seen as a negative by most fans of the genre since it is being danced to for long periods of time (often on drugs), I think I just have never been able to sit through a song that is essentially just a looping beat. However, I think that is only somewhat of a problem on this record simply because of how great the production is on the beats. There are repetitive moments, but they usually are really great to listen to and it isn't long before there is some sort of mild switch-up. I think my favorite parts of this album is when they really go off the rails with their instrumentation and let some absolutely disgusting midi synth noises in like in the last half of Da Funk. I love the distorted arpeggios that open the song Fresh alongside the sound of crashing waves. Around the World is obviously really well known, but I really think it drags on for too long (almost 7 minutes) and the only thing you really get out of it is a geometry dash instrumental with the line "Around the Wooooorld" repeated like 150 times. It's not a bad song by any means but just gets really grating after a bit. Rollin' and Scratchin' is a more dark take on the dance music they had been showing off thus far and although I think the 7.5 minute runtime is reasonable for this track given the experimentation it's going for, I really don't think it translates well out of a drugged out club scene. Technically impressive, yes, but would I listen to it more than once? no. Teachers is a little weird in terms of the vocal, but idk I kind of fuck with it for whatever reason it's just groovy enough to justify itself. The track Rock'n Roll is actually really fucking grating and goes on for way too long. If there wasn't some other redeeming parts of this album, this song would singlehandedly make it not worth it to listen to this. The rest of the songs on the album are decent to listen to and I think the closer Funk Ad is really nice, but none of the tracks leave very much of an impact at this point, feeling like Daft Punk has shown their hand at this point in the album. Overall, I'm looking forward to hearing their later albums in full because if there's anything I can say about this one, it's that there is a ton of promise, but the runtime is simply too long and many of these songs that run for 6-7 minutes could be compressed into some great 3 minute tracks. Listen to this one if you like EDM and if you aren't, maybe just play Around the World and vibe for a little bit. Score: 7/10 Promising, but either bloated or boring. Highlights: Daftendirekt, Revolution 909, Da Funk, Fresh, Teachers, High Fidelity, Burnin', Indo Silver Club, Alive

Alright but not my style

Some great vibes, some standout tunes, some great experiments that succeded, one miserable, painful failure. Rollin And Scratchin brings the whole album down for me, down significantly, because it was painful to listen to and I am half convinced it caused me a headache. Really cannot overlook that, no matter how great Around the World is or how much of a pleasant Suprise Fresh and Teachers were

Some nice tracks, but got a bit annoying towards the end (e.g. rock & roll).

There were some good songs on here, and I'm normally quite into Daft Punk, but overall this didn't do it for me. As many have said previously, most songs - even the good ones - are too long. Some songs are downright annoying and I didn't finish them (High Fidelity and Rock'n Roll come to mind). 3 stars for the good ones, which for me actually includes Around the world!

I needed a good reason to relisten to this album. Then I listened to it and remembered why I hadn't listened to it in so long. Droning loops no longer hold up in modern music, but it's undeniable how influential this album has been on modern day music.

Background music

I definitely didn’t love every song. But the good ones made me wish I was in a crowded smoky dance club and very high and I actually don’t want to be doing any of those things.

A little disappointed in the album I thought it would be better than it was I just found it rather average with one good song

Decent album. First half is pretty good. Second half not so much. Didn't hold up over the course of time but changed the game during it's time of release.

Love Daft Punk, but this is not an album of their best bangers.

No destaca especialmente. No es demasiado agresivo

It's a classic set of banging house beats and sample work. I prefer daft punk's later work as this is just a really good album that sticks to fundamentals of its genre, but it's great.

Not bad

It’s alright but very niche and nowhere near daft punk’s best

Whisks me back to MTV2/The Box days. "Sounds you can see" material. The visuals of the music videos are part of the experience for me. Great background-working music, but it is a frustrating "sit with a glass of whisky and focus on the album" listen if you're not in the mood.

I've never listened to a Daft Punk album straight through. I certainly have enjoyed the singles I've heard, in various settings. I was just served Justice so I guess the album generator feels I still need to dance more, Frenchly. Daftendirekt is a super strong start and I'm loving everything, some familiar some not, up until track 8, Rollin' & Scratchin' which is not really suited to home listening. Sometimes noise is just noise. That and the next few tracks are less interesting, and dare I say overlong. Overall I enjoyed the album less than I expected. Beginning and end 1-7, 14-16: 4.5, middle 8-13: 2.

Not amazing, but repetitive

Other than the track Around The World and a couple of others, it's a pretty average album lacking in variety.

There are germs of ideas here, it’s not as compelling as I remember though.

Again I only knew the 2 famous tracks, but I do vividly remember seeing the Around The World video for the first time and thinking it was brilliant. Album is a little too ambient for my tastes but still solid.

I'm a bit suprised I'm fine with such strong rhythm. Probably heard Revolution 909 in some fashion show or some other scenarios. Prefer this type of music over those experimental indies even if this one does not have much lyrics either (rolls eyes). But still, requires me a lot of patience to reach Around the World track... ah, the quirky modern music world.

Perfect background music for doing homework.

It’s an ok album. Pretty par for what ABBA provides. They have their own style and nail it. It’s hard to feel like their music is dated due to no one really replicating it.

plenty of fun. i was never really into them - i don't dislike them, just never really managed to care much either way. in terms of beep-beep-zip-zip albums from 1997...if you made me choose, i'd go with vegas, by the crystal method, over this one any day. for comparison: https://open.spotify.com/album/1PJxfEx1v3rdvmd4mBwPDt

Wasn't inspired by this - maybe need to listen to it again, or in a different frame of mind!

not their best

The good ones are really good, some of it may be filler

3 stars

I really like a good amount of Daft Punk's music but I've never been able to get into this album. It's super repetitive and some of the beats get annoying but there's something about it that doesn't make me hate it. It's still really well produced and the music isn't bad it's just not meant for focused listening. Fav songs: Da Funk, Alive

Random Access Memories is my only frame of reference. This sounds similar but less fully realized. Makes sense since I think this is their first record. What I like about RAM is that it feels like pop songs. Less drawn-out electronica than what is happening here. Still, though, it's good "up the pace while you're working" music - which is what happened when I listened to it. Isaac's sitter must wonder what's happening in here, with me listening the George Michael and Daft Punk back-to-back.

I don't really listen to this type of music often, but there's something about Daft Punk that I like. Because I don't listen to the genre, I can't really critique or assess it. I don't know what Daft Punk does differently or better or whatever - but it's good.

Daft Punk don't write songs, they create audio perpetual motion machines. Discuss.

Interesting but was starting to get very repetitive!

My first foray into Daft Punk (and house music in general). I would have to say I’m disappointed. Extremely repetitive. I’m sure they are fun to dance to in a club, but sitting at home is not the right setting for this

Undoubtedly important, though they have more enjoyable albums imho.

Quite disappointing actually. Obviously the hits are great but there was a lot more filler than I'd been expecting.

not their best but still fire

Per me il voto è 2.5 e comunque around the world è sempre fico.

This album was a lot of fun to listen to. It's undeniably catchy, feeling like the prelude to a great night out. I must say, the front half of the album is thrilling to listen to. "Da Funk" and "Around the World" are the clear stars of this show. Once you hit "Teachers" though, it starts to feel long. I feel like this starts out like an evening at the club, it starts strong and pulls you in, but then the music gets looser and more repetitive as you move through it. By the time you hit "Rock'n Roll," you have been dancing deep into the early morning hours. It plays differently just sitting at your desk and gets a bit tiresome. That said "Indo Silver Club" is possibly my favorite track. Fave songs: Da Funk, Indo Silver Club, Around the World

Not my kind of music...

Wow there are some good beats here. Even some cool melodies. Even some Kraftwerkesque stuff in the 2nd half of the album. More enjoyable then I expected. 3 🌟

Surprisingly enjoyable great beats the electronic sounding vocals is my main complaint 3 🌟

Inte min stil, men rätt stabil Bästa låtar: Around the World Da Funk Revolution 909

Not my favorite dp album

Well, this is certainly interesting and different. I had heard their name for quite some time, just never listened to any of their music as far as I can recall. I rarely encounter this style of music ("House"? I think?), and I don't expect I'll make a habit of it, but this album has some really catchy tracks. After a while, though, it felt like I was in a fast-moving video game with lots of lights and colors flashing. Also, I don't really like dancing, so I am a terrible judge of what makes good dance music, but I can see the appeal of this album for people who like to dance.

Not bad but pretty basic by Daft Punk standards. Clearly their debut. I like their newer stuff better but I understand why this is on the list.

Daft Punk make amazing four minute songs that last seven minutes

Hummm... so, as an album, this is shit. Most songs are unbearable, but the few good ones are really good. Over the fence on this one

Innovative and fun for no longer than 3 minutes of any song. Which is a shame, because they had no clue that the songs were all wayy too long. Like Jay Z says, Less is more. Anywhore, what can I really say in light of the fact that its a classic album with wide influence. Like yes it sucks, but it was necessary for 808 and heartbreak.

Good groove. Very repetitive if you're not in the trance/dance mood.

Repetitive and not as pleasing as Random Access Memories.

Didn't finish all the way but wasn't a huge fan of what I heard. 5?

Kinda sounded cool for parts, but very long and some sections just sounded like headache. 5.

Not there best album but a solid debut

I’ve never liked listening to straight up dance music in an (unmixed) album format. And this one is 75 minutes long – so 40 minutes of filler. The 90’s technology – specifically the Chemical Brothers inspired noisy bits – hasn’t aged well, but the bass lines still rock and the disco-sampling French style that they popularized is still going strong 25 years later.

Just so long. I think if each song was like a minute or two and there were more different beats it would be interesting. I still like some of the songs though, so 6.

Some tracks were repetitive in a not-so-good way and were edited with a whole lot of distortion at times. Still, grooves like "Around the World" keep this album at 3 stars.

This was OK. I'm guessing this is on here because it mainstreamed electronic music or was very influential in some way. It was a little lost on me, though.

Guetzum. Utofahre

Pretty enjoyable

Some songs here and there that I liked (Revolution 909, Da Funk, etc)

Classique

I listened to 3 tracks. I should have been with punks facing away. Not my thing.

Not their best

Like it

Good album but not my bag.

It's an absolute classic, but far too long.

I like electronic music. That's something that people who know me well tend to pick up on. However, there are many different kinds of electronic music, and I usually go more for the kind that I sometimes self-deprecatingly describe to my friends as "photocopiers murdering each other" than the more oonts-oonts varieties. This is at least partly because I don't like dancing. The music of Daft Punk, on the other hand, is made specifically for the dancefloor, and if you want to bust a move for 74 minutes then they have you covered with this one. Sometimes I really wish I was the type to hang around in fancy nightclubs. Best song: Revolution 909 is silky smooth.

This got repetitive really fast.

Nice as background music but not insanely good

This album consists of super repetitive beats that belong in a dance club. They're not bad, they're even pretty catchy sometimes. I got used to it the longer I listened. However, the album is quite long and it overstays its welcome as a standard (not dancing along to) listen.

A lot of this is repetitive - seems like more music as part of the environment instead of a statement on its own. Initially liked it but the monotony of it really got to me. Follow on: Herbie Hancock, to hear electronic music done well.

So this is the birth of 'French house' and the beginnings of some dance music superstars. However to my ears, despite liking some of the sounds I hear (and there are a couple of catchy hit singles) this is not an album to listen to in its entirety without being in a club or chatting to other people. The tracks go on far too long (I even find this on their excellent fourth album at times) and are rather one dimensional with a limit to the ideas presented in each track. I am aware that there is a steady improvement kin terms of melody in the ensuing work but I regret to say that I found this album rather boring, despite some interesting samples in places.

Repetitive lead to boring, and then annoying.

I lament the fact that electronic music is a thing. I understand some “artists” are incapable of playing actual instruments, but can be “talented” at using computers to simulate music. But I just don’t see how repeating the same sound for eight to ten minutes is acceptable music. It’s background noise at best. Erik Satie started this trend in the 1800s with “Gymnopaedies”, which wasn’t bad, but led down the slippery slope to minimalism and whatever this album is. Sorry, France, but your music sucks. Except for Edith Piaf and opera. 1.5 stars.

Bo alcune carine altre davvero fastidiose

It’s at least kind of fun, but trying to enjoy this sitting in my living room feels like a total waste of time.

Two or three certified bangers on here, that's for sure. But that'd only clock up <20 of the interminable 74 minute runtime. As an album, it's overlong, under-baked, tediously repetitive and full of filler.

It ws awful.

Not as good as "Screamadelica" by Primal Scream the album on this list that preceded this one. Not terribly done or lazy, but way too long and more or less one note, at least in my opinion.

Yeesh I'm tired of this. 2 stars but barely

Maybe this album was revolutionary in the electronic music genre back when it was released but compared to what they were doing 10+ years later, this is a bit of a snoozer. I was at a low 3 stars on this for about 2/3 of the album, but then it just kept dragging on and on so I'm dropping it to 2 stars.

On this list I've heard every piece of music Neil Young has written and collaborated on. I've seen the Beatles move from a poppy boy band to a psychedelic group of old guys who then went their own ways to do weird solo stuff (much of which I've now listened to). I've also been force-fed numerous shitty pop rock albums by individual bands all across the UK and USA (fuck the 3 kings of leon albums on this list). You're telling me that the *one* daft punk album I need to hear before I die is *Homework*!? Sure that's where they start, but as with all those other artists there is no celebration of their growth until they are properly represented on the user list. Homework is not that interesting, and while there are some good songs and ideas, many other tracks just sound uninspired. Give me discovery, RAM or even Alive and we might be talking 4s/5s, but this isn't it. 2.4/5 -> 2/5

The title is fitting because it felt like homework getting through this album. There are some good grooves--"Da Funk" and Around the World" especially--but ALL of the songs are super repetitive and go on way too long. It would be fine for the dance floor but, for casual listening, it doesn't make for a great experience.

I could definitely hear the foundation for the much better later work that would come out of this. But just taken on its own, I very much, to my own surprise, did not care for this album.

Büro, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Saulangweilig.

Honestly, I find it boring

not my fave but I started to get into the back half 2.5

A lot of this was fine, but never very interesting. And then they'd mix in weird and annoying sounds.

Easy to listen to in the background. Some songs were slightly annoying, but I kinda still liked them? Around the World is the best example of this. Production is great, I love all the tiny and weird elements in the songs. This is just not my cup of tea, though; it is repetitive and not very engaging. It is good for playing in the background though I guess. Favorite Track: Revolution 909

This Homework assignment start out great, it was easy, bouncy, and fun. Still warmin’ up when ya hit Da Funk, flyin’ high with Phoenix, just chillaxin’ at the beach with Fresh, the cruzin’ Around the World ( Popcorn .) All is good, very enjoyable. Should have ended the album here. You hit a major brick wall at Rollin’ & Scratchin’. By the time they wrapped it up with Funk Ad, I couldn’t wait for it to be over. Major point deduction for the second half. (2.1*s) First half still holds up 30 years later, second half was never good.

Repetitivo y cansa rapido.

French house…

Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? Are these the guys with the helmets? I like the Tron soundtrack in the context of Tron. First impressions before listening: I don’t know how I’m gonna feel about 70+ minutes of French house. I’m not even really sure I know what makes French house different than regular house, but house is not my jam. Favorite track(s): Da Funk Overall Thoughts: Not a terrible way to spend the workday, most of it was fine but I found a few of the songs to be very annoying. I’m can’t believe Around the World was the big hit off of this album because was the most grating track to me and got old very fast. I imagine this album is great to party/rave to but that’s not what I was doing while listening.

I respected the work but please, no more

Raw French house and techno built on looping filter-house grooves, punchy drum machines, distorted bass, and sparse, processed vocal snippets drives with relentless repetition. Listening feels like being locked into a flashing club loop where the same beat cycles until it blurs into pure sensation. The result is hypnotic and endlessly monotonous.

I really enjoy electronic music, but this is just too much. Repetition is my main complaint. Repetition is my main complaint. None of the songs stand out too much, and they don't go anywhere interesting either, which is annoying given how long both the songs and the album itself is.

Da Funk is not enough to save this.

French house music. Oyf. I'm kind of perplexed at why Daft Punk are so revered? What's so special here? I guess it's nice to walk around and zone out to. And maybe if I was high and in a nightclub this would fuck. But also that would be my hell. - Da Funk - Around the World - Indo Silver Club - Alive

Don’t really care for this repetitive noise. I’m excited for discovery !

This was too repetitive. Way too much.

Had no idea Daft Punk went back so far!

an admirable but mistaken first album by Daft Punk. Love them but this is a miss for them. Odd RAM or some other album was not on there.

Despite containing two certifiable bangers in Da Funk and Around the World, this feels very experimental, like they're trying to find their style so throwing in all the beats and bleeps they can find and hoping some of it pays off. Personally, I don't think it does and I can't recommend it - try Discovery and Random Access Memories for a funner (it's a word now) experience.

not in the mood atm 2

Very well produced. But it sounds like it was made for the dance floor. There’s not enough development in the individual tracks so the second half drags until Alive. I liked the waves on Fresh

I’m probably gunna lose a lot of electronic music street cred, but I’ll say it anyways, Daft Punk might be the most overrated and overhyped of my generation. They are so insanely mediocre. This album is such a massive disappointment. I have a lot of friend specifically from highschool that was really into them (probably still are but I don’t talk to all of them very often) so I didn’t go into this album with unreasonable expectations. I don’t think they were going to be the greatest electronic band I had ever heard. But what’s sad is they are not even in the conversation to me. First off, most the memorable and iconic things about daft punk are visual. Their costumes are cool, their live shows are elaborate and fun, their music videos are entertaining and sometimes mildly goofy. But when you take all those things away, all your left with is repetitive songs that are usually heavily if not entirely sample based (which I can respect, a healthy amount of sampling I think is fair game, but they push it. Like to the point where it feel plagiaristic. Seriously if you don’t agree listen to robot rock and then listen to Pull my strings and tell me what you think). But the most egregious error that electronic music is notorious for is just being too fucking long and overstaying your welcome. And this album has like the greatest example of that phenomenon EVER. And what’s funny is your probably thinking I’m going to say around the world, and that’s because you are right and we both know that the song is like 3 mins too long. Sometimes this can be lost on people cause if you watch the music video it will help significantly to hold you attention at bay. But when you listen to that fucking song by itself, it’s like torture. I’m just begging the song to finally end near the end. Seriously, if it wasn’t for the fact that this album contains “da funk” it would get a very deserved 1/5, but it will have to settle for the flimsiest 2/5 instead.

And the concentration of electronica just continues to rise. That's a shame here, because I'm sure this album was significant. Daft Punk's debut surely would be important. But ignoring that, what's here is just not standout enough for me to be left with an impression. It suffers from the same issues I have with a lot of this genre, maybe more so here than in others. They build a musical idea one piece at a time, then they repeat that idea over and over again until the song is over. It's just so repetitive, to the point where the music is having the opposite effect on me, bogging me down instead of pumping me up. If you cut all these songs in half, then I maybe I'd give it another star. Highlight (Or really just a song that I knew before): Around The World

Around the world is a 5, rest of the album doesn't do much for me.

Around the world är fet, dock.

So unexpectedly boring.

Not for me at all - it’s like every song has a great minute that’s repeated for a further five minutes, and then the next track starts. Favourite track: Da Funk

Honestly, this album is full of skips

Not for me, obviously good but just does nothing for me

I have no idea what to expect. Daftendirekt: 7/10 Pretty groovy. Da funk back to da punk baby. WDPK 83.7FM: filler. Revolution 909: 5.5/10 Not much to it. Da Funk: 5.5/10 Phoenix: 5/10 Fresh: 5/10 Around the World: 5.5/10 Rollin & Scratchin: 2/10 Teachers: 5/10 High Fidelity: 4/10 Rock N Roll: 1/10 Oh yeah: 3/10 Burnin: 4/10 Indo Silver Club: 4/10 Alive: 4/10 Funk Ad: filler.

I wanted to like this album. I have heard lots of great things about daft punk but have never heard one of their songs. This album ran the gamut of I really liked the song to I can't wait until this song is done. I listened to this while cooking dinner and definitely found myself dancing while cutting up veggies. Then the next song came up and I could not wait until it was done. I would certainly listen to some songs again, but not the whole album and I certainly would not buy this album. It did make me interested in hearing some other songs by the group.

Good group just to long of the same thing

The music these two make is not really for me but even then, there are a lot of elements whose presence I cannot comprehend. Why are many of these tracks so long? Why do they wait so long before adding elements to the basic beat? And why do the samples continue to be played long after they overstay their welcome? I'm happy for Daft Punk fans that like this album, I really am, but I hope that I never have to listen to this album again. Best songs are Da Funk and Teachers. 4/10, many opportunities for improvement.

2.5 - Meh

I am a fervent fan of electronica and its many sub-genres. And while I am a fan of their later works, particularly the TRON Legacy Soundtrack and RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES, this album was very underwhelming to me when it came out in 1997 and after listening to it again today, my opinion didn't change. The only tracks worthy of appearing on any album at all is "Around the World" and "Da Funk", with honorable mention to "Teachers" because it was a sweet idea of shouting out all of their influences, but it ultimately doesn't groove. Even with "Around the World" being one of the stronger tracks on the album, the only version of it that I enjoy, and has lived in my collection for decades now, is not from this album, but rather from their live album ALIVE!. This particular album version of "Around the World" feels like it is about 2 to 2 and half minutes too long. Similarly, to me "Da Funk" has always felt like it should have been about 5 to 10 beats per minute faster than it actually is. I do enjoy that their music is not reliant upon lyrics at all, and that when words are used, it is primarily for their rhythmic value and not for their literal or figurative meaning. The production and engineering is solid, but the arrangements and dynamics, with the exception of "Da Funk" and "Around the World" don't vary much. Ultimately, I don't think this album should be on the list, at all. There were other 90s albums that were far more influential that could occupy this spot.

House, electr. dance, 1997 -> 2

Don’t get me wrong I like daft punk but my this was repetitive! Don’t get me wrong I like daft punk but my this was repetitive! Don’t get me wrong I like daft punk but my this was repetitive!
