Reviews (page 2 of 7)

I sort of enjoyed it.

9/10, surprisingly great songs really diverse genres and very fun sounds great execution all around

Must listen punk, excellent songs front to back

Very Great Album

Awesome blend of classic late 70s punk (NY Dolls-ish) and 2nd wave alt (Violent Femmes). Brand new band for me.

I like it.

They could really play and this is an excellent and varied set of songs. Surely they are the spiritual forebears of The Libertines, having a similar air of louche looseness and with Peter Perrett playing Doherty's role of smackhead poet. A pretty strong 4

like if the Violent Femmes listened to Teenge Fanclub

well i’ll be

These guys sound exactly like the Undertones. I like them too.

Never heard of them, and the vocals on the opening track had me very worried that this was going to be impossible to listen to. It got better, if still a bit warbly and out of tune in spots. Nice new wave vibe.

The Only Ones - The Only Ones Enjoyed this. Sounded like it could have been from the 90s or noughties. A solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ You can hear the influence they had on Blur and The Libertines. Standout tracks : Another Girl Another Planet, The Beast, The Immortal Story

Not sure why TOO got lumped in with punk as their were a much more straightforward rock n'roll band and this is a really good album for the time. Well worth a listen.

Good first song

First thing I'm thinking, not even having listened to it, "GODDAMN THAT GUY IS A BADDIE". I think we all know which guy I'm referring to... So far I'm really liking the first quarter of this album. It's very fun.

Power pop punk. Great guitar playing and great songs.

Quite enjoyable, to the extent that I listened more than once which is always a good sign. Decent length and I knew the big hit from the album. I was a bit concerned this might be on the list just because of that, but actually there's a bit more going on here I think. Half decent and interesting enough to get to 4 stars

Strong 3, weak 4

I was not aware of this band or album before this. It was great especially in the back half. I don’t have time for multiple listens right now but want to revisit this one.

Fun album with a cool sound. Standout track is "Another Girl, Another Planet"

would quite like perrett's coat.

I already knew that Another Girl, Another Planet is a top tier song, but the rest of the album is still great over a blistering half hour. More poppy in the lines of The Modern Lovers and Wreckless Eric then the grittier side of punk.

Solid stuff

Solid 4.1/5. A keeper.

Hollow. Rockin

On first listen, this felt like a strange inclusion for the list, but given that we seem dedicated to exploring every nook and cranny of the post-punk/new wave story, I guess it's not all that surprising. I was not really engaged on my first listen, and it didn't leave much of an impression. Listening closer was a better experience, and I'm glad I took the second pass. I'm interested in how much this blends glam rock (and a little prog) back into the post-punk mix. There's certainly some punk here, but I hear echoes of The Stooges, Bowie, Billy Joel, and The Velvet Underground throughout. The inclusion of saxophones and organs really sets this apart from other post-punk I've heard from this era... maybe this is really more post-glam with a little punk influence than it is the other way around? The big guitar solos feel more at home under the hard rock or post-glam umbrella than they do as post-punk. It sounds like they edge more into post-punk later, so that probably colors their ultimate genre classification. TANGENT TIME! Did we miss an opportunity to create a sub-genre here? A quick search suggests that post-glam isn't an established genre but the more I sit with it here, the more tempted I am to die on it's hill. I guess it's better to call these guys post-punk than to have them labeled as the only group in a sub-genre that otherwise never took off. Esthetically, the hair metal of the 80s was the direct successor to glam rock and all its accumulated mid-late 70s excess. But musically, this record feels like a clearer descendant of the music that established glam rock in the late 60s and early 70s. I guess monoculture probably didn't allow for all of the sub-genres like we have now, but I wish this was a bigger segment of the post-punk umbrella. The "What could have been?" story of post-glam is a perfect mirror to the story of The Only Ones (who never got the big break they seemed prime for) and ironically adds a whole new layer to the band name. Anyways, I apologize if you've read this far.

Really enjoyed that. Unexpected. Unpolished especially vocally, but that’s what gives it character. Got a bit samey-same mid way through but improved again towards the end. A marginal 4.

What an eclectic little funny trip I had listening to this.

Glad I gave it a sec to come together 3++

Liked everything other than his voice. Might be the most annoying on the list thus far

I really really liked this I love power pop!!!!!

I liked this. Didn’t save anything but will be back.

I think I'm on another world with you With you

I had a lot of fun with this. It’s punk music but also lets in a little more complexity and lightheartedness. The big hit, “Another Girl, Another Planet” is definitely a highlight but far from the only one. Some of the guitar work is fantastic — at times feeling like a classic rock throwback and others feeling similar to post-punk licks by the likes of John McGeoch. I’d somehow missed these guys, even though the music is very near my wheelhouse. Based on the debut, I’d be interested in giving their other records a listen.

I could see this being some people's 5 star album, because it obviously influenced so much late 80's and 90's post-punk that came after. I think it is super clever, and the music is varied and interested. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because it lacks the bite and staying power for me, as something that really touched or affected me in a substantial way. However, I plan to go back to this album in the future, and if I listen to it a few times, I could see it growing on me more.

Recognized the first track from the Yo La Tengo cover and was surprised I never heard this original or anything from this album before. Instantly added this to my library. Really great. Speaking of which, no Yo La Tengo on this list???

Dark, decadent, dreamy, nocturnal tales from the underground, songs of hurt and addiction and glamour

I love saxophone :) saxophone is my frien :) I would be lying if I said I wasn't into this. I guess that means it's four stars but I am conflicted because I usually really hate british 70s rock.

Charming how variable the degree to which tracks have been polished/not polished. A couple of standout tracks and then the rest is 'nice'. If it had been recorded 5-8 years later it would be unremarkable but a pioneer in 1978. This helps the loose and 'DIY vibes' feel honest and engagingly un-cynical,even if they did have access to a proper studio and knew their way around

7/10 Another Girl, Another Planet is a favourite of mine, and the rest is pretty good

This album is fantastic. I already knew Another Girl, Another Planet, and expected more of the same, albeit less iconic. What I got instead was some weird mix of power-pop (expected), noise, Violent Femmes-esque songwriting (I know this predates them, but still) and overall something more challenging and rewarding. Really dug this one.

Straight to the point. Great energy.

Violent Femmes-esque not just the vocalist, who is immediately adjacent in tone and style, but musically as well. A surprise from a bad I never heard of. I’m going to juice the score a bit to encourage additional listens. 4/5

Power pop gems with an almost punk dressing: effortless hooks, jangly guitars, a bit of dissonance and snarl, drawling vocals, bouncy bass, shaggy loose performances, Lo-Fi DIY production values, and a the energy of chilled out chaos. Another Planet is by miles the stand out track - a pure banger - but the rest is consistently great keep it simple stupid rock and loads of fun.

"The Only Ones" is the debut studio album by English power pop band The Only Ones. Power pop, new wave and punk rock are the Wiki-listed genres. The album was self-produced with Robert Ash and Steve Lillywhite was the engineer. The bandmembers included Peter Perrett (vocals, guitars, keyboards), John Perry (guitar, keyboards), Alan Mair (bass) and Mike Kellie (drums). The album received critical acclaim and is recognized as one of the best punk albums. Commercially, it reached #56 in the UK. The album opens with "The Whole of the Law." It's slow and sultry with the horns and the keyboards. Perrett with longing and melancholic vocals. Layered guitar notes. A driving guitar riff and bass strikes begin "Another Girl, Another Planet." The song takes off with power chords. Fast drums. Perrett with nasally vocals sounding a lot like Robyn Hitchcock as he's infatuated with a girl, maybe drugs too. A layered guitar solo. Power pop at its finest. A cowbell gets added to "The Beast." Perrett with deadpan vocals as he doesn't hold describing his heroin addiction. Appropriately, a Stonesy, down and dirty guitar. The last words he sings are "no cure" as the song fades into the outro with another layered guitar solo. The closer "The Immortal Story" starts out fast with a pumping bass. Layered echoing vocals as Perrett describes obsession. Power pop with a hint of reggae. The song ends chaotically with distorted guitars. Power pop, punk, hard rock and elements of jazz, reggae, glam rock and even prog. The band keeps it interesting throughout. The lyrics can be straightforward, dreamy and heavy with drug references. Perrett's vocals are longing, melancholic, snarling-punk-like, whispering and resigned. This album is worth a listen alone for "Another Girl, Another Planet" but it's solid all the way though. At times the power pop sounded dated but not enough to prevent me from giving this a solid recommendation especially for power pop and punk fans.

There's some classics here. "Another World, Another Planet" for example is one I'd include on a list of 1001 Must-Hear Songs, even though other tracks on this album are arguably more distinctive. The rest of the album is a bit uneven, sometimes weird in a dated way, but still overall really good. Does it belong on the albums list? On the fence. There's a lot of room on a list of 1001... Rounding up to 4/5.

Yessss. This is why I’m still doing this project!!! Never heard of them. Read the blurb first and thought I’d hate it. But wow! Blown away by it. Not what I was expecting. The singer isn’t the best but that adds to the intrigue. Great musicians on here. Will need another listen just to check I’m not insane before rating it!

Walking a line between power pop, punk and rock, with the DIY anyone can do it vibe, though not everyone is going to ever write another girl, another planet all time level song. Yeah biggest knock is going to be his vocals, but think it gives it vulnerability that is present in the lyrics. Count me a fan, 4 Star

Much better than one might expect; it’s not at all “ the hit plus…” Decent breadth and they manage to pull off the diversity. I didn’t realise they were happening so early. Most like Buzzcocks I suppose. I already had their 2nd album, but I think I’d better search out a copy of this too. Great guitarist and though I’m sure there are a few who can’t handle the vocalist, his distinctive style doesn’t bother me and proves surprisingly versatile across the material.

Really good.

Underrated punk album, reminded me of violent femmes and Luna

4 out of 5. Another fun album in the books.

So good! Definitely need to listen again, I was surprised it is from the 70s.

Another girl another planet slaps tbf, rest forgettable wish I could give decimal points on this

Sehr chillig

Completely unfamiliar with this which is exciting! It's pretty good, most songs have a nice groove to them. Strikes me as finding a home somewhere between the Rolling Stones and Pavement. I like the singers voice for a few songs, but find that I'm tiring of it as the album goes on. The Replacements' cover of "Another Girl, Another Planet" is a favorite song. I like the version here too, although not quite as much. Overall, I'm glad this came up. I was thinking 3 stars, but then I saw that the album is 33 minutes long and for some reason I really appreciated that, rounded up to 4 stars!

Light 4

oskar vibes

Some pretty great guitar licks in there

Finally, after what felt like forever in the blahs, this album comes around and knocks me off my feet. Like a combination of The Velvet Underground, Bruce Springsteen and Pink Floyd, with a little Clash thrown in. 3 new favorites but not a single tune disliked, including the three bonus tracks. 4.5/5

This is why I appreciate this project, being exposed to new music I’ve never heard of. I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Clear influence on future bands like Oasis. I read many reviews where they really dislike the vocals, but I had no problem with them. Yes they are in the lower register but they work with the bands sound and what a sound it is. The band is tight. Drums and Guitar work are outstanding. Will revisit.

thought was very mid and boring but then i listened to another girl another planet and loved it, another one of those whiny rock stars sounds like velvet underground but spotify described lead peter perrett as raffish & scuzzy so i liked it even more

I’m surprised I haven’t heard these folks. They have the same DNA as other bands I love, Television, the Violent Femmes - and it seems they were early to that sound. Definitely Velvet Underground influenced. I think this whole album holds up well.

Vocals reminiscent of violent femmes, tight musicianship

The vocals suck. Luckily, they don't destroy this album. It's very good, carried by the musicianship, which is great for a late 70s punk/new wave album. The songs themselves are also good. 4/5

The first track was so so bad but the rest of the album settled nicely into a rock heavy rhythm. The sections of blues were a welcome addition rather than a strange tangent. Pretty nice overall.

I love getting records that I'd never heard of before. Sometimes you find gems. A few songs in and I can see that this one is gonna get some mixed reviews. People will complain about the vocals for sure. I kind of like them though - the vocals fit the songs really well. Most of the way through and I'm really liking this one. It's a great mix of punk, power pop, late 70s early new wave. It's really well played, well recorded, and all the pieces are there. Some really great guitar work too. Is it perfect? No. Was it the gem I was hoping for? Yep. I give this one a 4.25/5

Sounds inspired by The Beatles. Groovy

Never heard these guys before. I liked it.

Sort of reminds me of a lot of 70s power pop that didn’t make the list because it just isn’t as good as this. I like it! I think on the whole it’s missing something.

I really like what I hear instrumentally quite a bit. But my classic pet peeve of a singer sounding bored while they're singing is raring its ugly head

It grew on me with a second listen. No rest for the wicked.

This album has me so conflicted. It definitely grew on me over time. The first track i was filled with dread for the next 40 mins, then track two was amazing.

Good. It sounds ahead of its time while also being very much of its time

Excellent pop punk!

Vocals aside, it's some good late 70's new wave. 3.5 bumped up to 4.

I’m at a 4. There’s an old phrase: “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link”. It takes about 30 seconds for this album to reveal its weakest link, and that is lead vocalist, Peter Perrett. Everything surrounding him screams success; the band can fucking rip a good instrumental break, the guitars sound awesome, the percussion has a good power to it, the bass feels deep, and overall, everything surrounding him has a sort of natural charisma / personality to it. There’s nothing technically wrong about this album. Peter Perrett’s voice is… I mean, it’s not even that bad, really. It just sticks out like a sore thumb. He’s not doing anything wrong, he just doesn’t fit on most of these tracks. He somehow sounds like both lead characters in Smiling Friends combined, occasionally feeling disinterested in his delivery. He’s trying, and there are moments where his voice does work decently well, and occasionally harmonize well to disguise his pitfalls. It’s just too noticeable as the weak link of the album, and while I’m not saying singers grow on trees, it does feel like they could have found someone else out there, you know? All of that said, even if he’s the weakest link, this is still a very strong chain, and one that’s strong enough to give it a 4. Some of these tracks fucking rip, especially “The Beast” & “The Immortal Story”, & instrumentally, this is as good as any late 70s power pop I can remember. The vocal structures for the verses are still good, even if the vocals themselves are shaky at best and outright bored at worst, and the lyricism is generally alright. The energy emanating off of this album still makes for a fun time, and I did slowly accept that his voice was just kinda like that. I do think the opening track is a mediocre tonesetter, but everything afterward (save for “It’s The Truth”, which is just kinda boring) is honestly pretty good, or at least, acceptably fun. If the biggest sin here is a mediocre vocalist who sounds like what would really happen if a band needed to train a short-term replacement off the street in a Disney movie, while the rest of the band sounds fucking great, then it’s not that bad of an album. The floor here is definitely a 3; maybe a 2 if you’re extremely annoyed by his voice. I’m at a 4, and I think it earns it.

Terrific album I’d never heard of - except for the single that I’d heard and loved without knowing who it was by

A fun rock album

3.9/5 good songs another girl another planet great song. if they were faster cld b a 4 but the slow english drawl give emotion

Good album--not quite new wave or punk or anything in particular--the musicians are good and the songs catch your attention. I especially liked the Zombie overtones in "Breaking Down" (shades of "She's Not There") and the instrument solos throughout.

I do not know how I have never heard of this band, who apparently released 3 albums in less than 3 years, petered out, and broke up. This type of comet-like trajectory is like catnip to me, in part because it almost always exists in the punk/new wave/pub rock corner of music history, which is also like catnip to me. This was a genuine delight, a brisk 34 minute affair that feels even shorter (complimentary), highlighted, improbably, by a nearly 6 minute centerpiece, "The Beast", which truly knocked my socks off.

Good. Chad drummer

This isn't the most unique album on the list, but I'm fine with that. "Another Girl, Another Planet" won me over despite my initial skepticism, and the rest was just good, solid rock music.

Another girl, another planet es un trallazo inmortal. No Peace For The Wicked).

I’m not sure if I liked this more because it was the first album in a week that wasn’t synth pop bullcrap, or because it was actually good. But I really enjoyed it nonetheless. Good straight up punk/rock.

revelation

Ok, I was really vibing with the first two tracks. Breaking Down kinda lost me a bit. I see that this album was self produced and I think as another review noted, it really sounds like a demo and could have benefited from a bit more fine tuning. Most of the tracks I was a bit on the fence about won me over by the end with their high energy instrumentals. Overall this is one I’m happy to have experienced. For that I’ll give it 4/5

Shit vilken pigg skiva. Trodde jag inte när jag såg den. Misstänkte en meh-skiva. Men det fan hög nivå rakt igenom. Kul!

Thought this album sounded way ahead of its time. Reminded me of Cage the Elephant, The Libertines or Pixies. Artsy, noisy, alternative indie vibes. Really enjoyed the vocal layers too. I feel like this should be considered one of the original "indie" albums.

This band should be bigger than they are. I had only ever heard “Another Girl, Another Planet” and I don’t know how but this is right up my alley. You can hear the influences of tons of punk/indie/twee from the 80s. Great listen! Favorite tracks- “Another Girl, Another Planet,” “Breaking Down” “Creature of Doom”

Pater and the Pets is echt een lekker nummer zeg. 4 reten

Enjoyed this. The vocals are a bit of an adjustment but give it a sort of Pet Shop Boys feel layered onto some pretty enjoyable pop. Definitely a decent first studio album and landing when it did just before the 80s, it would have fitted in well to the decade to come. I found myself quite happily listening to more songs from them after which is usually a good sign.

The Only Ones’ is a compelling listening experience, primarily defined by its effortlessly chilled demeanor and strong musical ambition. The immediate highlight is undoubtedly the great musical epics scattered throughout the songs. Intricate arrangements that suddenly soar into unexpected, brilliant instrumental passages. This blend of raw energy and complexity elevates the album beyond the standard fare. Further rounding out this distinctive sound are the vocals. Taken together, the melodic peaks and that odd vocal delivery make this an interesting cool album experience. Almost pop like at times. E.g. "Creature of Doom" Music moments that take you unaware and give you something to feel and think about. Imperfect music to discover. - THIS #1001 I was won over by "The Beast" to pip a 4.

Crisp, well-executed, fully credible and well ahead of its time. The languor (e.g., "The Beast") sounds like much of the best '80s rock. Vocals are an acquired taste, to be sure, the sneering a seeming artifact of/tribute to J. Rotten's style. But there's much that sounds pre-punk (e.g., the Santana-like expansiveness of "Breaking Down") and beyond-punk considering that these guys know how to play their instruments. Rounding up because heroin addiction is hard and these guys probably deserved a touch more love than they got. And honestly it's not hard to see how, with a little luck, and perhaps slightly more adventurous guitar playing, they mighta achieved a trajectory more like The Smiths ("No Peace for the Wicked" is certainly Morissey-esque) or The Clash or the Buzzcocks. Agree with others who say the "discovery" of such a band as this is what makes the 1001 project worthwhile and rewarding. Warning: do not enter "The Other Ones" by accident when searching in streaming services, unless you like bad dance music of an adjacent era.

This was a very interesting listen. At first, like in the first few seconds of the first track, I found the lead vocals to be super annoying and contrived and I wasn't thinking I was going to enjoy the album. But as it went on, I found that the music -- and even the singer -- won me over. About halfway through, I had to check on wikipedia if The Only Ones shared any members with The Clash because some of these tracks sounded _very_ Clash-like. Overall I really enjoyed this and listened to it twice, but the tone and timbre of the vocals were the slightest bit annoying. Four stars.

Dug this. But I’m also a sucker for whiny white boy music. 4/5

Ok, here's one I never heard of before but really enjoyed. A little stylistically uneven, but I liked pretty much all the tracks, so no big deal. I didn't know what to expect and was surprised when it opened with the mellow Roxy Music-ish "The Whole of the Law" and then we're on the pop-punk track "Another Girl, Another Planet." The album continues to shift gears throughout, but never goes wrong (although I found the 1st side more engaging than the 2nd). Would definitely revisit. Favorite tracks: Breaking Down, City of Fun (rocking track!), The Beast, The Immortal Story (good closer).

Really good, melodic, almost glam sounding punk/pop with a lot of variety. 4.0/5.0: Great

this album had a few really great songs. the rest ranged from fine to good. realistically its a 3 but another girl, another planet gets it an extra star

This is the type of experience I was looking forward to on this journey. A band I'd never heard of, an album I'd never heard of, and none of the songs are familiar. And it was a good listen. A lot of great lyricism about the highs and lows of love and the ways it makes us crazy. All lead by the sleazy crooning from the lead singer. Sometimes the songs have a sort of sci-fi fantasy element to them. Kind of Bowie meets Velvet Underground. I dig it.

Dreamy, melancholic, and slightly haunting New Wave. Good enough for background music, but sometimes something catchy draws you in, making you want to listen closely—only to turn back to the conversation almost immediately.

Thought I didn’t know the band but realised I knew ‘another girl, another planet’ as one of John Peel’s favourite tracks. I was pleasantly surprised by the other tracks and could see why they were considered influential.

This clipped by at a pace and seems to be a trait of some of the songs/albums recorded in this genre at the time where very little time is wasted, leaving its mark and not overstaying its welcome. Another girl, another planet’s solo is great. I imagine some would find the lead singer’s voice grating but I don’t mind the lackadaisical delivery.

No real review. A good listen

Quite good. New wave with depth.

Another post-punk, proto-indie album that is really good. I think there’s a whole genre out there I didn’t really know about that I really like.

I friggin love these guys…. Never listened to this album tho. Gg Reat stuff

I know and love Another Girl, Another Planet, but I'd always thought of The Only Ones as one-hit wonders. Luckily, it turns out they had plenty of other tunes where that came from.

I can't believe I've never heard of these guys! They sound like if Daniel Ash and Paul Westerburg joined Big Star. It's fantastic. I definitely needed to hear this before I die.

Catchy and well done

This was not all what I expected. More tuneful and complex and varied. His voice is a bit rubbish but somehow it mostly works, and there are some decent lyrics in there too 3.5

This was fun and light. Not doing to much easy listening

Another Girl, Another Planet is one of my favourite songs of all time.

I like this album a lot, but probably won’t be coming back to it much. Think they really could have made it big with a different singer…

Me likey!

A weak start but It gets better as it goes

This one was a real surprise for me. I’d heard Another Girl, Another Planet before who hasn’t? but I didn’t expect the rest of the album to be this solid. It’s got that perfect late-70s energy, somewhere between punk’s ragged charm and power pop’s catchiness. I kept thinking, “Why don’t more people talk about this band?” There’s swagger, hooks, and that slightly broken romanticism that I really go for. What I liked most was how it didn’t just rely on one hit. “The Whole of the Law” is a proper earworm, and “No Peace for the Wicked” has that sleazy, jangly groove I didn’t know I needed. Even when it slows down or gets a bit scruffier, it still holds your attention. I’ll be coming back to this one for sure it’s the kind of record that grows on you and makes you feel like you’ve just discovered a secret classic.

One of my favourite songs of all time, Another Girl Another Planet. Good album.

Flying the flag for nasal singers. Great jazz punk

Never heard of these folks but quite enjoyed. A pregenitor of a couple of styles/bands that I like

Trevlig ny bekantskap. Påminner om Roxy Music.

good vocals, entertaining lyricism, great record!

This was a really cool discovery, and a band I’d never heard of before, and clearly an album that never got the mainstream attention it deserved. Instead, it ended up becoming a cult favorite. I’d describe this as power pop emerging from the late ’70s post-punk scene, with plenty of jangly guitars and a distinct pub rock feel. What blows my mind is how this album flew under the radar, because it genuinely had the potential to break through to a broader audience in the late ’70s and early ’80s.

Great album! Great rock’n’roll! The songwriting is clever. The band sound really kicks it. I’m surprised they didn’t have a longer career.

Some very fun songs

Don't love the vocalists style / sound but lyrically not bad. Musically, so much fun. Shit straight up rocks.

Unexpectedly great. I knew Another Girl Another Planet, and was expecting an album of pop-punk mediocrity, but this has range, variety and depth. Each song is unique while still sounding like the same band. It's not a 5 - the glazed drawl of the singer and the looseness of the playing is a bit grating in places - but I'll definitely be coming back to this one.

Traces of Television and Violent Femmes. A nice discovery for sure, never heard of them. Rounded up.

Solid pop punk joy. Much better than the Clash.

Thought I'd never heard of this band before and then Another Girl, Another Planet comes on and the realisation dawns on me. This was pretty fun. Should it be one of the 1001 albums you need to hear before you die? Probably not, but take a day off and just listen to some tunes.

Never heard them before. Very interesting band, perfect album!

Every track has a unique voice, feel, and perspective, while the total package sounds both of a time and place and distinct within that time and place; color me pleasantly surprised.

These are the guys who do another girl another planet? Great song! I just listened to the cars and this is a very similar style.

Liked to start, bit repetitive after first 3

The buzzcocks meet the violent femmes. I really enjoy the backing instruments even if at times they can be a bit generic. The lead voice kind of grew on me a bit after being pretty jarring at first. Overall solid 70s jam/pop/punk? Album. 8/10

music just sounds good today i guess because i’m liking everything. this was fun and a lot of beautiful moments too. Fav tracks: Another Girl, Another Planet; The Beast; Peter and the Pets

They clearly played an important role in the musical timeline of my generation. Great listen.

can’t help but respect the forebears of many of my favorite 90’s bands

Never heard of them before. Pop rock meets early punk. Enjoyable and would listen more

Parhaat: Another Girl Another Planet, Breaking Down, The Beast, Language Problem

I was not hopeful - based solely on the cover. But to my surprise this sounded like a Post-Punk Faces record. Will put on my rotation!

Really very good. Feels ahead of its time. A band I've never heard of before too. This is why I'm doing this!

What a great new-to-me band! 4.5 stars

8/10 Favorite Tracks:*The Beast*, Creature of Doom, The Whole of the Law, Another Girl Another Planet, Breaking Down Least Favorite: Language Problem, No Peace for the Wicked, As My Wife Says

Didn’t like the first track, was dreading the next 40 minutes. Then Another Girl, Another Planet came on and it is an absolute BANGER. The rest of the album while good doesn’t hit that same high but still a really good listen overall.

I enjoyed this! It felt remarkably current given how old it is. Vibes.

This was weird and I really liked it. I ended up listening to it a couple times. Nasally punk vocals with some more intricate, full-band instrumentals. Catchy, fun. The type of interesting album I’m looking for while doing this project!

Pretty cool album. Has some classics!

Not what I expected - but no worse for it. Just the sort of ramshackle I like.

This was a real pleasant surprise, despite the shaky start. Will definitely be returning to this one.

Loved it, what a delightful find. Reminds me of so many things I like, I don't know how I could have never heard of them.

50 seconds into the first track I started laughing. Which isn't a good sign. The vocal performance takes a bit of getting used to - a cross between the Buzzcocks and They Might Be Giants. But then the second track. hey I know that!? 'Another Girl, Another Planet`. Great song. Never knew it was them. Album grows on you. Excellent for a first album. Shame they never pushed on.

Pleasantly surprised by this one, then again, when an album is described as power pop, there’s a 90% chance I’m gonna like it, great stuff.

Like a mix of Velvet Underground and Boston. With jazz and punk. Despite that, dig it a lot??

## In-Depth Review of *The Only Ones* by The Only Ones The Only Ones' self-titled debut album, released in 1978, is often hailed as a landmark in the punk and power pop genres. This review will explore the album's lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, while also weighing its pros and cons. ****Lyrics Analysis The lyrical content of *The Only Ones* is characterized by a blend of dark themes and introspective storytelling. Lead vocalist Peter Perrett's writing often reflects personal struggles, existential musings, and societal observations. - **"Another Girl, Another Planet"** stands out as a quintessential track, encapsulating a sense of romantic escapism intertwined with a flirtation with mortality. The opening line, "I always flirt with death," sets a tone that resonates throughout the album, showcasing Perrett's ability to juxtapose light-heartedness with darker undertones. - **"No Peace for the Wicked"** explores themes of loneliness and alienation. The repetitive chorus serves as a haunting reminder that inner turmoil can persist despite outward appearances of cheerfulness. - Other tracks like **"The Beast"** delve into the dangers of addiction, using vivid imagery to convey a sense of urgency and warning. Perrett's lyrics often reflect his own tumultuous relationship with drugs, making them relatable yet unsettling. Overall, the lyrics combine poetic depth with raw emotion, inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences while navigating the complexities of life. ****Musical Composition Musically, *The Only Ones* is a rich tapestry that blends elements of punk rock with pop sensibilities and hints of psychedelia. - The guitar work by John Perry is particularly noteworthy; his riffs are both catchy and intricate. Tracks like **"Another Girl, Another Planet"** feature razor-sharp guitar lines that propel the song forward while maintaining an infectious energy. - The rhythm section, consisting of Alan Mair on bass and Mike Kellie on drums, provides a solid foundation that complements the melodic elements without overshadowing them. The interplay between instruments creates a dynamic soundscape that feels both cohesive and diverse. - Production-wise, the album has a raw yet polished quality typical of late '70s recordings. The mixing allows each instrument to shine through while maintaining an overall gritty aesthetic that aligns with the punk ethos. ****Themes Thematically, *The Only Ones* tackles issues such as love, addiction, alienation, and existential dread. - **Love and Relationships:** Many songs explore the complexities of love—its joys and its pains. Perrett's lyrics often reflect on lost love or unattainable desires. - **Addiction:** The specter of drug use looms large over several tracks. Songs like **"The Beast"** serve as cautionary tales about the perils of addiction. - **Existential Reflection:** The overarching theme of searching for meaning in a chaotic world permeates the album. Perrett's introspective lyrics invite listeners to ponder their own existence amid societal pressures. ****Influence *The Only Ones* has left an indelible mark on both punk and power pop music. The band's ability to balance catchy hooks with serious subject matter set a precedent for subsequent generations of musicians. - Additionally, the album's exploration of personal struggles resonates with listeners across genres, making it a timeless piece that continues to inspire artists today. ## Pros and Cons ### Pros - **Lyrical Depth:** The album features introspective lyrics that resonate with listeners on multiple levels. - **Musical Diversity:** A blend of punk rock energy with pop melodies creates a unique sound that stands out in its era. - **Cohesive Production:** Despite its rawness, the production quality enhances the listening experience without compromising authenticity. ### Cons - **Dark Themes:** The pervasive darkness in some tracks may not appeal to all listeners seeking lighter fare. - **Pacing Issues:** Some songs may feel slower or less engaging compared to more upbeat tracks like "Another Girl, Another Planet." - **Niche Appeal:** While influential, the band's style may not resonate universally due to its specific blend of genres. In conclusion, *The Only Ones* by The Only Ones is a remarkable debut that skillfully combines poignant lyrics with captivating music. Its exploration of complex themes through an engaging sound has solidified its place in music history as both an influential work and an enduring classic.

Fav: Another Girl, Another Planet Least Fav: Creature Of Doom Think it drags a little in the second half but that first half is back to back perfect songs. This is the sorta stuff I like to see. Also shout out to having a song unironically called Creature Of Doom, that’s what I like to see from song names

Had not heard of this band before! Total surprise. Really fun from the get go. Peter Perret's voice reminds me of Neil Cicierega'a.

I am torn on this album. I liked the songs, the style the vocals everything. That said there were no songs that stood out in such a way that I thought I would seek them out again, but should they come up again I would not be unhappy. Maybe I will come back around to them again but I cannot see why that would be.

The only song I knew from this band before listening to this album was Another Girl, Another Planet. I love that song, but I was not expecting much from the rest of the album. There are hundreds of band that I only like one song from and if this band was worth exploring I probably would have done that already... right? I was wrong. While Another Girl is still by far my favorite track, the rest of the album continued to surprise me. I added several songs to my library. I think of like to check out more from this band.

Whole of the Law is such a sweet opener. Another Girl is a classic and easily my second favorite song about heroin. After that one-two punch, the album definitely settles down into more generic Brit pop-punk. They do better when they slow down a bit like with No Peace for the Wicked. The rest is serviceable but the first 2 tracks get this to an easy 4.

Never heard of this band. Not sure they made it across the Atlantic. Too bad because this is a good power pop album that has a touch of punk in it. Really good guitar parts. In one song, the organ part reminded me of Kitty's Back a little bit.

I'd never heard of this band before but this was good stuff! Punk energy but with melodies that would make me want to listen again. Reminds me of Television. The harmonic double guitar solo in "No Peace for the Wicked" really spoke to me.

I should come back

I liked this! Never heard of this band, but enjoyed the mix of sounds and lyrics

Very fun album, somehow the singer’s voice worked with the beach guitar and funky bass lines. Glad it’s on this list.

Pretty good but once again not much else to say. Reminds me of a sort of mix between Coma Cinema vocals/lyricism and Hoodoo Gurus instrumental.

The album The Only Ones, by the band of the same name, is an intriguing musical experience that, despite the vocal limitations of the vocalist, manages to captivate the listener. The voice may be considered peculiar and far from traditional standards of beauty, but this does not prevent the engaging melodies and deep lyrics from standing out, creating a unique atmosphere. The energetic guitars and well-crafted production support the album, allowing even voice critics to find pleasure in the nuances and emotional honesty present in the tracks. Thus, The Only Ones establishes itself as a work that deserves to be appreciated, regardless of its vocal imperfections.

What's wrong with some people-this was made in 1978 at the cusp between Punk and New Wave. It has that fresh vibe and energy and knocks the spots off other bands that came after.

I think I like these guys

Loved this. Sick guitar and sad and overall sound.

I've listened to "Another Girl Another Planet" a bunch before this but never checked them out (a song that sounds like if 'Already Gone' by the Eagles flew to Manchester in 1975 and did heroin for 5 years). Uneven song quality but I like their sound...a mix of Lou Reed, The Knack, Peter Frampton. Tight band and I like the production.

Not bad. I think it will grow on me with repeated listenings.

Never heard of this group, so I had no expectations. Wasn't bad, I'll check out more of their stuff.

I really like it!! His voice is a little toooo languid but I still really liked it

Underrated album from an underapprecited band of the late 70s pop-punk movement in UK. Reminds of bands like The Undertones and The Buzzcocks. More than a pop-punk band as they incorporate doowoop and jazz influences. All the songs are little melodic gems, that stay with you. Another Girl Another Planet is the "hit" but the deeper cuts are just as satisfying and well written. It does bog down a little towards the end but remains a satisfying listen. 4.5 stars

very interesting 70's sound. Would like to listen some more!

I like this one! At least the alvum contains songs that make sense. Vocalist is so so; his voice is ok for some tracks but others would benefit from a change, he is not the most solid and has limited range of expression. Like the guitar riffs and general sound. All in all a pretty good album.

This was a really up and down album for me. I very much enjoyed the overall tempo and energy of the songs and I feel like the instrumentals could have fit in very well in modern Indie Rock. When the vocals kicked in on the first track, I groaned right away. Another whiny 80s new wave voice, great. Luckily my view changed over time, in some tracks his voice worked very well and I found myself getting over that initial reaction though there were a couple moments later in the album i found his voice grating to me. Lyrics were ok, a bit downer for me but when it's high tempo and fun guitar riffs I don't mind as much, and they played around with rhyming structures a fair bit. Overall a pleasant surprise, I feel like this is a band that gets better the more you listen, and was way ahead of their time.

I'd never heard of The Only Ones before. Really enjoyed this. Feels a bit like the Violent Femmes, although it predates them. Will listen again.

Yeah, this was good. Better than expected. A good listen, but could get a bit repetitive. It’s original and unique and I enjoyed it. 4/5

Didn’t really care for his vocals but this was pretty cool. Kind of like Squeeze.

This album was a strange listening experience. I'd never heard any of the songs before but have definitely heard their influence across dozens of others. Especially Another Girl, Another Planet -- I kept thinking I knew the song only to be completely wrong! Breaking Down had great instrumentals. Veered towards punk near the end of the album, starting with Language Problem. Had me thinking about how all of the albums on this list are good, even if I don't like them.

I liked this one! In general I really liked the guitars and backing music, with their upbeat musical jams. Lots of tracks on here are a total bop. I'd never heard of these guys before (outside of one track), so it was a nice surprise.

really enjoyed this completely eclectic mix

Started out like a dodgy Doors tribute band, then Another Girl Another Planet drops and it’s great fun all the way through after. Really enjoyed that.

Rockified 70s-80s British pop often slaps, especially this one.

Favourite tracks: another girl another plant; the beast

I liked this album, probably more than I should have.

I have never heard this before. It was a fun listen. I see these guys have influenced many bands that I like. I will listen to this again.

Album 502 of 1001 The Only Ones - The Only Ones Rating : 3.75 / 5 UK Power Pop. Some catchy tunes with some pretty skillful musicians. Don't think they ever really caught on here in the states but the UK thinks pretty highly of them. The Encyclopedia of Popular Music named The Only Ones one of the 50 best punk albums of all-time. The compilers claimed that the Only Ones were "the closest thing the UK had to Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers, a laconic, shamble of a band who were, at moments, touched by a creative greatness that made you get out of the glare" - Wikipedia

I can see how this fits in alongside other 70s punk like Sex Pistols, but the more elaborate instrumentation and lyrics focused more on love than anger are very interesting and set it apart. Really cool stuff.

Deadpan delivery Melodic approaching wild Uniquely punk rock

I enjoyed this more than I expected I would, just given the general era and the fact I had never heard of them, and they are from the UK... the 1001 has such a big UK bias that many of the UK entries, particularly in the 1990s, are just not very good. That said, this reminds me of The Soft Boys and Robyn Hitchcock and I love those guys so that probably explains why I'm enjoying it.

I liked this one a lot!

The songs were well written but it gets knocked down by the out of tune singing

"Another Girl, Another World" is the top track. The Only Ones remind me of Violent Femmes, the right mix of melancholy but rocking, punk but also sad indie rock. They manage tight songs that sound more melodic and introspective than punk bands but louder than an indie outfit. I enjoyed the entire first seven tracks are great; the rest is worth a listen.

Wow, this album is all over the place. First impression of the first few seconds: Beach Boys? Wait, saxaphone? Billy Joel?! Then it moved into glam/punk territory à la T. Rex and Television, then straight-up rock & roll, complete with soaring guitar solos. Not the hugest fan of the vocals, but this is great stuff.

4.1. Very listenable.

Is The Whole Of The Law an indie version of I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)? Anyway, it's a catchy opener. Another Girl, Another Planet I was familar with and is a great track. A few other standouts along the way so probably need a few more listens as it did start to grow on me more on the second listen.

Hmmm, don't think I've heard of theses folks before, and I wasn't very taken by this on first listen - mainly due to the singers voice I think? Warmed up to them quite a bit on the second listen, though. They remind me of someone I can't quite put my finger on..... Hanoi Rocks maybe? They've got that sleazy punky slightly goth slightly glam vibe... Fave tracks - "Another Girl, Another Planet" which was apparently their big single, though I don't recall hearing it before. Also, "The Beast"....

For the longest time I thought that, from looking at the album cover, The Only Ones were some long-lost New York based punk rock/new wave band, the double vision of the band and the colorful styling of the name hammering that perception home. Consider me surprised when I read that they were, in fact, British and not a one and done project destined for obscurity. The Only Ones does a pretty good job keeping their heads afloat in a rapidly changing atmosphere, merging punk and pop into a steady concoction that doesn't stray off the rails during its runtime. Clearly a band that deserved more than they received and I know I'm not the only one who thinks so. Favorites: The Whole of the Law, Another Girl, Another Planet, Breaking Down, City of Fun, The Beast, No Peace for the Wicked, Peter and the Pets.

Pretty casual listen. Very easy to get through and although no songs particularly remarkable I did like it and would come back.

Better than expected. A lot variety in this one album, skilled musicians. Based on the music video and lead single I was expecting to give a 2 to 3. But they pulled it up as the album went along. Barely a 4

Excellent

Loved the jazzy elements at the start

my favorite of the proto punk albums i’ve listened to. it’s not as loud as Sex Pitols and not and politically in your face as The Clash. It’s a lot of softer, and it reminds me a bit of 90’s emo and indie rock from that time. it’s also got a bit of jazz influence too? i warmed up to it a lot more as a listened. just like with most proto punk you can hear all the influence they’ll have in the future. definitely worth a listen for the history and for the actual music.

Enjoyable punk / ska mix. Never heard of this band before.

Wow, I really dug this, which surprised me. I knew the Yo la Tengo version of The Whole of the Law, which is a very straightforward and pretty tune. Upon hearing The Only Ones version, I thought, "Dear God, I have to put up with a whole album of this dude singing?" But "Another Girl, Another Planet" won me over. And then the next one. And the next one. And by the end, I was wondering why I'd never checked out this fantastic, shambling, adventurous album out before.

I loved the first three tracks here. Then it falls off a bit - 4

3.6 - I think instrumentally they were really great, but I the vocals just grated tbh

Initial impressions were that the vocals suck. Two tracks in, I still don't love them, but they are growing on me -- reminds me of Violent Femmes. Production is very pretty; clean where it needs to be with amazing separation between elements. Loving the balance between punky vibes and beach rock guitar -- this is right up my alley. Jazzy breakdown on Breaking Down is fantastic -- love this song. A lot of this was in the background, but I was jamming along. This is somewhere between a high 3 and a low 4. Erring toward the latter because I think this has high repeated listen potential.

His voice is a bit monotone but overall I can see how an album like this in 1980 heavily influenced 90s alternative.

Pretty good. I have nothing to say today.

4/5. I love the energy on this album and although the vocals aren't ones I wouldn't consider as top quality, it matches the chaotic and punkish vibe of these songs. The nasally and drawn out tone adds to the instrumentation. I am definitely going to check this one out again, just great songwriting on each of these songs but I do need to be in the mood to enjoy. Best Song: Another Girl Another Planet, Creature of Doom, Language Problem

I didn't care much for the first track but this album shaped up rather well. There's a lot going on here. There's really strong punk and pop influences here along with glam and some hard rock influence. Some moments sound Beatlesesque and then others sound like the Velvet Underground. That mixture of melodic pop with a more dangerous sounding punk undertone works very well and creates a unified sound despite the myriad of influences. The languid vocal delivery grated on me at first, but it fits this music well. It sounds flippant almost, but in actuality is carefully placed and delivered. The production is full sounding and layered and the guitar work is particularly good.

Wow what a dope surprise this was, did not expect it to be this enjoyable. While the lead vocalists voice is really nasally, it works for me. I'm a simple guy, gimme a great guitar tone and I'm set. Fav songs: - The Whole of the Law - Another Girl, Another Planet - Breaking Down - City of Fun - Creature of Doom - No Peace for the Wicked

A fun album - love the energy. I had broadly classified the Only Ones as punk in my mind but there's definitely more to them. Another Girl Another Planet is the highlight but I liked a lot of these tracks Docked a point because the vocals aren't great, although they are "authentic" and unique so I don't hate it so much

I enjoyed this album, it was fairly punky and had good energy

favourite song: another girl, another planet whether john peel liked them is always a solid litmus test of a band. john peel liked the only ones.

I wasn’t familiar with this band before, so this was a fairly pleasant discovery. They seem to get characterized as power-pop but to me they feel a good bit closer to the snark and edge of a Wire or a Magazine.

Sounds like a drunk, British, new wave Violent Femmes. Which is a moronic thing to say BUT this means it's a pretty enjoyable listen just not the most memorable.

this is more like it, Another Girl Another Planet is outstanding.

Gefascineerd zitten luisteren naar de stem in de openings song The Whole of the Law. Vleugje VU, Television, Pavement misschien zelfs. 8/10 Highlights The Whole of the law Breaking Down

Really good.

The singer sometimes reminds me Jim Morrison, but in some other he sounds like he doesn't care at all

1978 - Punk Rock; Indie Rock

Soundtrack of a slightly edgy teen movie. Honestly not too bad.

great album

If I saw this in the store as a teenager there's no way I want to know what's on this. No way. Based on the cover alone. I don't know who that red-faced squinty guy is, but he does NOT look like he will add musical value to my life. Or the Ron Wood-lookin dude on the left. The front guy just seems like he wants to be anywhere else and the only person who looks even somewhat like a rocker is being hidden in the back. This better be good. Well, it was good.Really good. Exactly the kind of thing I would have loved as a teenager actually. Like a cross between the Violent Femmes and the Buzzcocks with a bit of early rock influence (think Elvis Costello more than Elvis Presley). The Only Ones are great instrumentalists, wrote hooks, and simply great all around. I guess these guys worked on the music more than how they look, which is perfectly fine considering the result. I apologize for my earlier remarks. This is a basket of fun danceable tracks mixed with some odd (in a good way) slower tunes. I'm astonished that I'd never heard of them. This album lives up to the "1001 Albums You Have to Hear" rule for me.

This was super fun pop-rock right here, catchy as hell all over. Even sounds a bit before it's time being the late 70s, would've guessed sometime in the 80s. Already knew 'Another Girl...' was a banger going in, now there's a few more tracks to replay over a few times.

Pretty good, gaslit by critics into giving it a 4. But second listen for sure.

Never heard of these guys. Breathless, melodic, poppy and punky, good times all round. More please.

The vocals and the tracks on the album remind me of the Violent Femmes and their album Why do Birds Sing? Both albums are great!

Is The Beast a cow

Pretty good and glad to know it. Seems more post-punk than punk or at least very much on the poppy side of punk. Best cuts are "Another Girl, Another Planet" and the mellow and jazzily expansive (with Doorsy keys) "Breaking Down." Hooks are good, feel is gritty and attitudinal, singing offbeat in sound but impassioned in spirit – everything you want from a culty, highly influential and romantically near-miss of a band. Rounding up because recovering heroin addicts/street poets need

Really big fan of this. I love how this is one of those albums that's really hard to pin down in terms of genre, there is something here for pretty much everyone. The way that pop, rock, and even punk are seemlessly blended is great. So much diversity, so much light and shade, just all around a really fun and unique album, especially considering how old it is at this point. The production could do with a bit more work, it does date the album a fair bit. But other than that there is nothing not to love about this album.

I didn't recognise the name when I got this, but as soon as Another Girl kicked in I was beside myself! This is such a good album and one that I'll come back to. I read some other reviews slagging off the vocals, but they're right up my street - I love very imperfect singers, and he fits that bill nicely.

Inauspicious start - the vocals on the first track didn’t fill me with hope. Luckily things got better. This is a great album - ragged in a good way. The Beast is great track - a foot stomping blast that builds and builds. The kind of band you want to see in a small, sweaty subterranean club.

Overall: Pretty chill. Singer's voice took me a second to get used to. I like the instrumentation of it. Favorite songs: Another Girl, Another Planet, Creature of Doom It's a solid 3.5 to me, but since I can't give half stars, I'll put it as a 4.

Albums like this are why I’m doing this list. Literally never heard of the band, but this entire album is wonderful!

A lot of variety. Classified as proto-punk, but only a few proper punk songs, some jazzy/psych bits, some classic 70's rock bits. Really dig track 2 and 3. Def relisten.

Pretty solid album all round. Somenice guitar tones.

January 7, 2024 HL: “The Whole of the Law”, “Another Girl Another Planet”, “The Beast”, “No Peace for the Wicked”, “The Immortal Story” I have a habit of going into 70s British punk and new wave with low expectations. Why do I do that? (aside from the possible over-representation of that genre and era on this list) This slaps! The 1st two tracks imply we’re in for a mopey ol’ time, but the Only Ones are also here to party, with raucous guitar solos and occasional bursts of saxophone. Listened to the bonus tracks as well, which aren’t mind-blowing, but “Lovers of Today” is good enough to be on the main tracklist.

Proto-punk. Catchy tunes. Interesting lyrics delivered in a laconic vocal style. Got better on 2nd listen.

Finest punk tunes. Did not lose much of its energy since the punk era,

Know another girl another planet, I think from a blink 182 cover (though it's been covered by 50 other bands). It is very much a pop punk song about a decade ahead of it's time and by far the best track. The wiki blurb mentioned new York dolls and there's a lot of similarities in the way they are pushing towards pop punk but also influenced by the older music, so the style flips back and forth a lot. Sounded like very old school punk and general pop rock for the most part, which while fine wasn't as exciting as the more modern sounding tracks. Will listen again I think as I haven't quite made up my mind, I'd say 3.5 for now.

First time hearing it. Really enjoyed it. Another Girl, Another Planet, City Of Fun and The Beast are all bangers. This is some good power pop here. The rockers are better than the ballads. Shame these guys had a short career.

An album that reeks of late 1907s London bars and gigs. Another girl... is a sensational song but there are other worthy numbers here, including the Beast and Peter and the Pets. The guitar playing is tremendous and varied and the songs range across genres and influences - think new wave, pub rock, hard rock, the Damned and Clash, Thin Lizzy. Great stuff

Really liked this one. Rating: 4.4

Never heard it before, any of it. Smooth listening, rock and punky, I like it. Definitely will listen more

Golly, what a scrumdiddlyumptious piece of music in me ears

I think this album was solid. It had a lot of fun instrumental parts and the songwriting was great. I loved the guitar, drums, lyrics. The vocals weren’t my favorite but it fits the music and the genre.

never heard of this band but i like!

There was always more to The Only Ones than Another Girl... and this album proves it. Not flawless by any means; there's a touch too much power pop perhaps, but still a great album of its time and still.

Grato descubrimiento. Power popnew wavepunk rock. Finales de los 80.

The most painful 4 I’ll ever give. I love the music here: (jazzy punk?) But his tone does really does hurt my ears.

Surprisingly I’ve never heard this! Pretty good, really! I can see the influence on indie music. I can kind of see what Libertines were going for. I gotta give it at least a 3.5 with the overall tone hitting me right, feels authentic and original for the time! Will revisit.

'Another Girl, Another Planet', 'Creatures of Doom' and 'Lovers of Today' are all straight up bangers. I don't mind Peter Perrett's voice at all, it fits the music and the mood it evokes. The Only Ones come across as a punkier Monochrome Set, pairing pop hooks with smart turns of phrase. Somehow manages to sound punchy and delicate at the same time. A lovely listen.

Quite enjoyed this. The vocals have a character that makes you focus on the words, and the band just rocks steady.

I enjoyed this one. Wasn’t sure what to expect but it surprised me with its deferent elements of rock, new wave, punk and power pop. I will be listening again.

Well done lads.

Pretty decent, think I would have to give it another listen someday

Saw the film Another Girl Another Planed, named after song of Only Ones, at the Rotterdam Film Fest long ago, really funny film about a man and his 3 consecutive girlfriends. 3 times a party in his house, with every time totally different type of people and you hear the music that belongs to those people (from classy to noise) . Shot with a simple K-Mart $100 camera, one of funniest films ever seen. Half of people left during the film and those who stayed gave it an average of 2* out of 5. Maybe only music freaks enjoyed it. I then listened to this album once and forgot all about it. But this really survived the times much better than most 1978 pop albums, like the Jam e.g., love it. Varied, melodic and his way of singing is as fascinating as e.g. of the Violent Femmes singer.

I had never heard of this band and the lead singer's voice did not necessarily bother me as it seems to have others. This is a really interesting album and the first song feels very different from the rest of the album. Not sure if I agree this is punk music, but it's like punk-power pop and I'm okay with that. I will be listening to more of this band's output.

Cant say I remember this album but I think I missed out on a great band. Could be in my top rated albums if the vocals were more appealing. Musically superior album.

i liked it actually

Didn’t get as much time with this as I’d have liked, as it sounded interesting. I might come back for another go, so 3.5 stars rounded up (to remind me to come back to it)

I don't have a lot to say about this one, but I thought it was pretty interesting to listen to 4/5

This is not just about Another Girl..., though it is mainly as that's like saying A Night at the Opera isn't mainly about Bo Rhap. So five stars for probably the best use of 3:02 in music history. But the opening and closing tracks are really strong. Extra-ordinary singing voice too - like Howard Devoto's another voice you couldn't imagine breaking through at any other time other than post-punk.

Pretty amazing album from a little known group who should be better known, this sounds like it could be 90s/00s BritPop, so ahead of its time does it sound. There’s some great songwriting and terrific production here. A gem.

This is the sort of thing I would have probably loved if I'd heard it nearer the time - though maybe it would have been too old by then!

Today we have another band I hadn’t heard of. It’s exciting to expand my horizons and hear music which is apparently essential listening that has just never popped up on my radar. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Another Girl Another Planet It surprises me that this album was released in the 70’s as it sounds much more modern. It sounds a lot like music from the UK indie scene (such as The Kooks, The Automatic, etc.) so it shows just how ahead is their time The Only Ones were. If you’re a fan of UK indie music, give this a listen and tell me what you think.

Okay, this was way more fun than I was expecting.

This album really won me over! At first I was like, oh great another BritPop band. And in many ways it is, but it's a really nice blend of punk, power pop, new wave, psychedelia, and more. Some great songs and some awesome guitar playing. My only complaint is the lead singer's voice. Maybe it will grow on me with further listens, but it's not super appealing. Overall though, good stuff! 4 stars.

Solid jazzy at times rock

Started off a bit rubbish, then "another girl another planet" is an all time great, then some really good and interesting tunes throughout 3.8
