Reviews (page 4 of 7)

New to me. I enjoyed it, but I won't seek them out from this listen.

This was decent. Interesting voice. Kinda sounded like bowie here and there which is probably fine.

Very typical of the time. An OK listen

Ein bisschen Punk, aber nicht so übel

Came in knowing one song and it is the best on the album by a mile but this does have a bit of something going for it. Surprised they are pretty much a forgotten act now

Another girl another planet is a work of genius, the rest not so much.

Was this the Violent Femmes before the Violent Femmes were the Violent Femmes?

Really solid

After reading reviews (not doing that again) I was worried. I liked this a lot. It’s rockabilly and punk mixed together I feel like. I thought sure they would at least be 80s but they were 70s. Cool sound and I had never heard it before. 6.2

Was debating between 2 and 3 for this, but decided to round up. Tight guitar work and some good songs “another girl, another planet” is my fave, but it loses points for the singers voice. Like a crappier buzzcocks

1. Another Girl, Another Planet 2. Peter And The Pets 3. City Of Fun

Not bad, but nothing to make me come back again

Nice example late 70s new wave/ not quite punk / rock. The stand out track is Another Girl, Another Planet, found on many a compilation album over years.

Didn't grab me one way or another

Meh. Not bad, but it sounded like I was just listening to the same song for most of it. Best song: Breaking Down Notable(s): Another Girl, Another Planet, The Whole Of The Law

This is a solid album - raw and ready, yes the vocals are naff but it makes up for that in the execution of its experimentation

Great album aged ok

Have loved Another Girl Another Planet for years - but have not ever listened to any other tracks by the Only Ones. Was a bit surprised by the eclectic nature of the album with Another Girl Another Planet the clear stand out. Peter Perretts vocals are a bit marmitey - on some tracks they work - with hints of lou reed- but on some of the slower tracks they really grate.

I definitely did not mind listening to this, but it was not something that stuck with me after I finished it. The opener and Another Girl, Another Planet were pretty fun listens and probably my favourites. The Immortal Story is great as well.

Solid drumming, lazy singing, can see the iconic importance of the music but a bit too soft and unstructured for me.

Hyvä levy tuo mieleen hyvät brittipop bändit mutta rock n rollimmalla meiningillä. Tykkään tällaisesta.

I had already listened to this, except I kinda didn't because I entirely forgot about doing so. It was someone recommending a lot of power pop so I could get familiar with the genre and maybe have a positive outlook on it (I didn't), but apparently I liked this album more than the others I got. Coming back to it tho, I can see *why* I would like this more than more straightforward power pop albums given this is partly a punk album, but it's also just too uneven, some songs can be the type of rocking new wave thing I love and the next is a slower jam which I don't care for much, it's hard because at its best this album really, REALLY pulls some cool songs out but as a whole... it's alright

Good power pop debut album from the late 70s, mixed with a bit of punk and psychedelia.

Weder nervig no bsunders usserordendlich oder uffallend geil. The Only Ones by the only ones bechund nur the only three

The only one album i have missed due to moving apartment. Aber au the only one album woni am post-zügletag ufgholt han. Heds spass gmach und isches worth it gsi: Jein. Hed nöd gschadet, aber hät eich au nüd verpasst. wenn das nöd d definition vum ne 3er isch, denn weissi au nöd. Only threes by lill'cruzy

nonie ghört – überraschend guet aber halt scho nöd allzu ufmerksam gsi 1 song gesavet = 3 küssli uf d'stirn

No es tan mediocre como piensan otros comentaristas. Lo que me llamó la atención es lo moderno que suena.

Not outstanding rock

Great music, a classic '70s Rock sound that caught me off guard, but terrible singing. Favorite Track: "Breaking Down".

Only knew one single by these guys so wasn’t expecting much. Pretty decent listen in the end

Um disco que flutua muito, com altos e baixos muito bem definidos. A sonoridade entre Badfinger e Undertones me pegou um pouco, ainda devo ouvir mais vezes e procurar os demais discos pra ouvir

Familiar sound but from before the bands I'm used to hearing play it. Influential or just the mid to late 70s?

Good album. Nothing too exceptional but enjoyable tunes

Not bad!

sometimes you listen to the most random shit cuz of this list ... btw we're almost at a year of albums!!

M'évoque parfois Bowie, le Velvet Underground, un précurseur de Jack White parfois et des Pixies. Au confluent des genres du rock, en quelque sorte.

This band is very tight musically, but I don't like the singer's voice much. For that reason it's not an album I would be likely to seek out in the future.

This would be better without the singer, I hate to say.

The Only Ones’ self-titled debut walks a fine line between punk attitude and classic rock sensibility — a blend that probably felt fresh and adventurous when it dropped in 1978. In hindsight, it doesn’t hit quite as hard as some of its punk contemporaries. The band leaned more into melody and musicianship than raw energy or rebellion, which gives the album a unique identity, but also makes it feel slightly out of step with the genre’s most defining moments. "Another Girl, Another Planet" is easily the standout — a near-perfect power pop track that still holds up decades later. It’s punchy, romantic, and effortlessly cool. The closer, "As My Wife Says," also lands well, giving the album a thoughtful, almost cinematic finish. The rest of the tracklist, however, struggles to match those peaks. It's not a bad record — just one that feels more like a time capsule than a timeless statement. Favorite Song: "Another Girl, Another Planet"

This is why the Caesars sound the way they do. Love when the thread to an ancestor is so clear.

Mick Jagger + 70s pop-punk... It was interesting but I found myself wishing they had more instrumental/jam sections than noise/pop-punk. Didn't like his voice much, either.

Spectacular title track

Liked it, but not compelled to revisit.

Great music, awful vocals.

Favorite Track: Peter and the Pets

point0.

i liked this album! the second song was my favorite. i fucks with the british 70s punk kinna sound. i’ll def listen to that song again but the album as a whole…prolly not any time soon. appreciated it for what it was tho. 3 star!

I liked this album! Fun vibes throughout and plenty of interesting moments on this album. Favorite tracks: the whole of the law, another girl another planet, no peace for the wicked 6/10

The ramones but more whiny

It’s very much something of the time. More generic British music.

New to me and kinda punky. I was ready to be a hater but I actually liked it

Not bad, not great.

It was good. A really interesting blend of sounds

I dig the vibe, but could only make it halfway through before it felt like the same thing over and over again

I'm not MAD about the amount of punk I'm listening to but this is getting silly. So far I can see why Another Girl Another Planet is the song I know. Everything else sort of blending together. Good voice tho, def one of the instruments. Becoming a pattern that I say all the songs sound the same and then immediately one stands out: I'm enjoying creature of doom. Language Problem also. Enough standout tracks here to enjoy but mostly background noise. Look ultimately I just don't think punk was really meant to come in albums. It was made for spitting at each other in shit clubs and for shuffling in your car while you crash into the palace of westminster. The LP format is just an unfortunate necessity.

I can't tell if this is really good or really boring, but Americans did it better. I'll enjoy the source material: Television and Blondie.

I didn’t have time to listen to the whole thing, but the songs I listened to were alright. I particularly liked Another Girl, Another planet

Surpsingly good. Who said punk rock allowed non-musician to make music?

That is nice

At first I thought this album was a total miss. That wannabe Lou Reed / Bowie voice really threw me off, especially on the slower tracks where it just sounds awkward. But as the album went on, it really won me over. It’s sharp, well put together, and often delivers some proper post-punk energy while keeping a raw, punk edge. A really solid find in the end … but with an unpleasant voice.

Nothing Special.

Прикольно вроде

I don't care what anyone says, this album is lovely. I saw quite a few people complaining about the main vocalist's voice, but I guess they've never listened to something like Pavement (or, if I'm being bold, even The Smiths and maybe The B-52's). Actually, the most off-putting thing about the album is its cover, but that's beside the point. I liked the first two tracks the most, I think they're really solid. The rest of the album wasn't too memorable, but I still really liked the overall style of the music and some of the lyrics (like in No Peace For The Wicked) were really relatable. All in all, nice a record.

I imagine this landed much better at the time. It's not bad, but it's also largely unremarkable to these ears in 2025. Grading on a curve a bit for the release year, so this one sneaks into a 3. 2.5

Really not into the vocals but the rest of it kind of hits.

The instrumentals are rad but the flat singing is bothering me I’d probably really like this as a sync in a movie

Definitely a typical late 70's album. Nothing overly complex, but the bass really cuts through the mix on a lot of these songs. City of Fun is the coolest riff Somehow it gives me a Lynrd Skynrd mixed with Beatles vibe

I liked the album for the most part but his voice was taking me out of it

Decent punk rock, especially considering it's from 1978. Never heard of the band though. 3/5

Another Girl, Another Planet - knew the song but never heard of the band :D But not so fussed about the rest of the album

Oooo his voice gahhh. I didn't hate the music, I actually liked some of it but during 'language problem' I just needed it to stop. I only knew 'another girl, another planet' and I did like that song but a whole album was a bit much. I feel like this list is compiled by people who liked a hit and then felt the need to include a whole album rather than considering including worthwhile and diverse albums.

When a lead vocalist is that bad, the music really has to be top tier. A few songs did deliver, but not one I'll rush back to.

Post punk / rock, very brit

I’ve never heard or heard of this band. First song starts with some good sax - I’m hopeful! Then the vocals start and don’t line up with expectations at all. I’m sad! Then the next song is not bad- vocals match the mood. Suddenly we are in Violent Femmes territory. Not sure who came first but they are very similar. Overall a slightly punkish pop sound. Definitely grew on me. The Immortal Story, which was the final track of the original album (there a reissue with bonus tracks) was the highlight for me.

Instrumentals were great, but I didn’t like the vocal style

Give me an instrumental version and it’s a 5.

Another girl, another planet is a banger, the rest is fairly forgettable

Very good sound and energy and intention from the artist. This album just did not mesh with me personally, it was dreadfully middling to get through. I am definitely an outsider to the genre, but I do listen to enough music to recognize there is quality present, and a fair amount of diversity in tone of some of the tracks. Middling score from me, this is not bad, but does not perk up my ears besides the skill heard from the musicians playing the instruments.

interesting lil gem.

Musically it is quite good, but the singer can’t sing in the worst possible way. He just sounds constipated

Pretty boring and drab, saved maybe one song, sounded like generic orange juice or prefab sprout.

Completely fine.

Correcto

2.9 Bit of a strange addition to the list. One hit wonder, and the one hit is barely a hit. Not sure what the list has gained from their appearance. They aren't bad, but they aren't good. Distinctly average.

Seems like an early violent femmes

The guys voice on the first track made me think he was originally a bad singer, then he suffered a stroke, making him worse. Later tracks were uphill from there, perhaps with me getting used to it, sounding much like the Violent Femmes singer at times. The music behind him I enjoyed universally.

I didn’t hate it. Listened through it without skipping any songs. Vocals are a bit tough at times. 2.5 stars.

pretty good

This is a very obvious one-hit wonder. "Another girl,Another World" is a nice track but the rest is meh. not bad but nothing that sticks.

nice 70s rock, no complaints

- Rather surprised that this is considered punk, but I can see how it led to quite a few pop-punk groups in the 90s and 00s. Has a flavor of Arctic Monkeys to it, too. - Considering how very British Perrett's voice is, I was surprised at how often I grooved along with it. But it did lose me occasionally with its whiny drawl. (Also having Kakoulli on backing vocals made an odd tension considering how much more melodic her voice is.) - Not surprised that "Another Girl, Another Planet" is the only track with longevity. It is the clear standout.

Pretty good, but i already don't remember much about it. A light version of British punk. A bit softer but easier to listen to. Vocals take some getting used to

As Punk goes, it’s not a bad album, but nothing that’ll set my hair ablaze. A nice blend of grit and whine.

Enjoyable listen, sometimes almost punk

Enjoyable.

Here is another British band I never heard of. This album starts smooth and mellow then transitions to rock. The singer has a sort of droopy voice (reminds me of Lou Reed). Overall this was better than I expected, but nothing memorable. Three stars.

normal demais

I'm old enough to remember "Another Girl, Another Planet" when it came out, and remember it as a better than average bit of Power Pop. So, seeing the debut album here in the pantheon of greats was a bit of a surprise. here goes.... OK. So "Another Girl, Another Planet" is the standout track of the album, but the rest... distinctly average. I can't understand why this LP is here in the 1001, but superior albums like "Can't Stand The Rezillos" isn't. Ah, sweet mystery of life.

another girl another planet innit

Overall a decent 70s album, but most of the songs were a little too slow, and the vocals on a couple songs were really annoying. My favorite song was The Whole of the Law because of the sax parts.

How frustrating, there's snippets of some really good stuff in here but overall the record just doesn't really do much. There's so many fun instrumental elements which don't match with the singing or the general vibe of the music. What exactly were they trying to achieve?

Never heard of these guys or this album, kind of enjoyed it after a hiatus from this project due to vacation. 3*

pretty cool

5.5/10 Could have been good if they had a better singer. Highlights: Another Girl, Another Planet Creature of Doom Peter and the Pets

Fun jammy stuff, love the organ. This list is so British

Enjoyable and very British take on New Wave/punk.

Decent album. Sound often like The Violent Femmes on downers. All of the tracks with heavier guitar and faster tempo are my favs.

Reveal reaction: I've never heard of this band. I started listening to this a couple days ago, and just wasn't in the mood. Then I got sick and kind of forgot about it for a couple days. Coming back to it, it's actually quite a bit better than the first little bit of listening I did. I don't really know how to categorize it. There's definitely a punk twinge to it, down to the singers somewhat nasally delivery, but it's got some four-on-the-floor straight ahead rock chops as well. There's a few songs in here that have some shades of what would eventually become grunge. I gotta be honest - for a guy that is PROPER sick of 70s rock, this kinda slaps. I'm not going to listen to it every day, but it actually sounds fresh for what it is. I know that's weird, because if I didn't know the year it was released, I'd definitely peg it as a 70s album, but at the same time it doesn't really sound like other 70s albums.

Hasnt aged that well

nicht schlecht, aber auch nicht gut. kein lied besonders herausgestochen.

I really liked the first half, but towards the end it all felt like variations of the same. Were these guys even influential?

Sounded like a mix of the Violent Femmes vocals and Television and The Gun Club musically.

No es la gran cosa, pero suenan lindo. Son un rock básico, arregladito que va.

Yea this is a pretty slick little album. though it falls off for me in the back half.

Very enjoyable. Hope to listen to it again. Mid 3s

fun album that switches from jazz to classic rock - pretty good.

Good blend of punk, new wave and indie sounds. Simplistic song structures allow this album to be digested easily. This album for sure help late 80's alt rock and punk music get some more notariety. The vocals lose me a bit, but all else is really good. I enjoyed it.

Some good songs with strong playing. As an album it does feel incomplete missing more often than hitting. Fine for a debut I suppose. Might check out the followup.

Imperfect but often fun

I thought it was interesting in parts, but a totally mixed bag. Feels a bit in-between genres and got tedious.

The drop off from Another Girl, Another Planet to everything else is massive. Such a great track

cool album cover let's be fr here nice opening good ol' late 70s british rock, what's not to like tbh

This is like a combo of generic 60s rock and 70s punk. Interesting but not amazing

Wasn't my jam

Bold name for such modest results.

Great proto punk album.

Interesting in places but ultimately felt unfulfilling, everything seemed overshadowed by the (admittedly great) single

This was pretty good. Obvious single excluded this was new to me. Like a poppier velvet underground maybe. Nothing earth shattering but not offensive

Not bad. Certainly a template for any number of other bands years later. I figure Paul Westerberg was WAY into these guys. An interesting side diversion into punk. Unexpected bangers: No Peace for the Wicked, City of Fun

pretty inoffensive, I get the vibe of royalty free music from this album. its not bad or anything, in fact I liked Another Girl, Another Planet, but overall its just a pretty average album.

The definition of a 3 star album. Pretty bland and right up the middle. Nothing to write home about but not bad

RFK Jr? Is that you? When did you get into 90s British pop rock? Really cool instrumentation, doesn't sound like anything too ground breaking but it sounds good. Oh but the vocals, yeah those are dogshit.

Pretty good.

Albumi #105, 10.11.2024 The Only Onesin samanniminen esikoisalbumi julkaistiin vuonna 1978.

Started off very slow and mediocre, but closer to the end it really picked up and saved the album for me. Highlights: Another Girl, Another Planet Creature Of Doom

Long forgotten proto-punk band from England. This album felt like an early attempt at Violent Femmes style music.

Solidly a 3 for me. Some moments where it felt like they were teasing taking it to another level. A definite willingness to stretch boundaries. Will come back for Immortal Story.

Enjoyed this - mix of psychedelic and grungy sound that I enjoyed. Not likely to spin the whole thing again but was glad I listened

British people who can’t sing shouldn’t sing

I wanted to shut this off after the first horrible track, but I always listen all the way through. It got better, pretty good even. Fun rock with a bit of punk to it. Shame about the vocals, though - they never got any better, and ruin any chance at greatness here. They sound like George Harrison if he was intentionally trying to sabotage a recording by half-assing the singing. This is one album that I'm on the fence about listening to it again, but leaning towards no. Best track: Creature of Doom.

The Only Ones was definitely a mixed bag album for me. All of the songs seem to follow similar formulas to each other but the results would often vary. On one hand, there were some songs with some pretty decent energy and the singer's voice did seem to fit well with them. On the other hand, the other songs were kinda slow and boring and just ruined by the singer's voice in some instances. The album did seem to move at a fairly fast pace and there were more good songs than bad songs so those two facts helped this album but not enough for me to give it more than 3 stars. Best Song: Language Problem Worst Song: Breaking Down

3 decent

not bad. i quite enjoyed this one.

first listen kinda a mixed bag

The vocals are grating, but the instrumentals kept me enamored throughout this.

The great thing about punk rock was that it was meant to be something that anyone can do. The bad thing about it was that many people did. That's not to say that The Only Ones are bad. Not at all. It's just that how many variations of the basically the same thing do you need? This album has some decent punk songs and they're a little poppier than most of the other bands at the time, which is something. They also were influential to the likes of Nirvana, Blur and others, which is also worth noting. It's a good album, but it just kind of fades into the general background of every other punk band out there. There are a handful that stand out above the crowd, but The Only Ones aren't quite at that level, to me.

Definitely will have to listen again. Seems that a lot of bands that came later, and in some cases much later, where influenced by them. I hear early Violent Femmes. Some early Strokes. Some vocals sound like early Brendan Benson. The song “Immortal” reminds of something from Weezer’s Maladroit. Understood this album came out decades earlier, but never listened to any of the band’s material before this listen. Might give it 4 stars based on listening to it more.

Good album

Yea, really nice

Some interesting sounds but only a little bit interesting. After the first song I had some hopes bvut it didnt materialize into anything too interesting.

Ok. Ikke noespes. 3

Had difficulty focusing at work today. Mind kept going back to thinking about how deranged the cover of The Only Ones by The Only Ones is.

I thought this was alright. None of the songs really stood out except another girl another planet, but I still enjoyed the overall sound. I got a bit bored at times. I kind of wish I liked this more than I do! 3

It's not bad but not particularly memorable to me.

This was surprisingly enjoyable, a band I'd never heard of who had an "interesting" singer, and a nice mix of garage rock/ pop. I was reminded of several other bands, most of which came later, like The Libertines. I was also reminded of several other bands who came earlier, like Hawkwind, but on their mid-80s lineup, so still later technically. I was very tempted to give this four stars, but it's a strong 3.

Interesting! I played this through twice, and really enjoyed it more in the background as opposed to listening to it closely, some of the vocals can be a little grating.

Only Ones I liked all the intros but the vocals ruin it for me. The songs are better than most of the other 70’s English punk bands. I think I’d like with another singer.

Kind of fun sleazy rock vibe but not super memorable and lost interest halfway through

I didn’t absolutely hate this. It was kinda weird and unpredictable in a good way.

Yeah okay. Whatever. Hey, new rule! Every time one of these 1001 supposedly world's greatest albums turns out to be just another minute variation on USUK '65-'80s rock the generator has served me many dozens of times before, I will give you a different album you could be listening to today. For instance: ~~~~ \"Djine Bora\" by BKO (2022) ~~~~ To tie it into this project: music as if Ali Farka Touré had ditched that Ry Cooder bore in 1994 and time travelled to hang out with Hendrix and CAN instead and *then* made "Talking Timbuktu". Go listen.

Hahaha, one song has 9.5M plays on YouTube music, the rest have about 150k combined. Another Girl, Another Planet is a great song. I don't mind the rest either, but I'm a tragic for 80s saxophone and unusual vocal stylings. This might be a four. Let's give it a couple more tracks... Maybe just a three. Yeah, three.

Another Girl, Another Planet stands out by miles, the rest underwhelmed. 2.5.

One of those that wavers between kind of annoying and kind of good. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and round up. I’m not likely to listen to it again, but it wasn’t bad.

Interesante pero sin merecer realmente la pena. Buen grupo.

Rock/Pop, einfach zu hören, nicht besonders spannend 3/5

Good - similar sound to violent femmes

Not too shoddy, a bit Meh in my opinion apart from Another Planet... which stands out as by far the best track

competent pop rock from a band I've never heard of, and am fairly certain I've never heard. Will ahve to revisit to form a final opinion, but this is a solid one for the list to reveal.

Some fun upbeat pop. The only track that really stuck out to me was The Beast, but even that kind of faded into the background as the song went on. I might give this one another listen in the future.

I bought and listened to this album many years ago and bounced off it. It's better than I remember, but it's a case of there being a few highlights and a lot that's forgettable.

I recognised that one track. The vocals kinda suck but I admire this for constantly trying to break out of just one sound.

Thoroughly ok

I really liked the punk edge to this in the music, but I found the vocals lacking. Not bad though! 3.3

tiene bangers pero nada que me explote aquí la cabeza so it's a 5/10

great album. heard a lot of influence that it had on my favorite bands.

3.1/5 listened 3x.

Tgis album bored me. And that is by no fault of the band. If I had discovered this when I was anywhere between 14 & 21 I would have loved it- I'm sure. But now it sounds too similar to bands I love that were clearly influenced by The Only Ones. That is worth appreciation. The last 4 songs of this 13 track album were exceptionally better than the rest, I must say.a couple could actually be released today and get a following.

Quite good. I had only ever heard the single. Will keep around.

The song ideas are interessting, and somewhat decently executed. But the vocals…

Decent

Energetic and entertaining.

I enjoyed this album. I was surprised that I had never heard it before.

It's good. But not great. Nothing really jumping out at me. Ironically, this isn't the only one album they have.

Completely serviceable British rock-punk vibe. It still holds up pretty well for being a late 70's release. The opener, The Whole of the Law and the next track, Another Girl, Another Planet are really a strong duo, showcasing both a quieter measured delivery as well as a track with a lot more energy (good guitar riff on that too). The album is bit uneven after that but still enjoyable.

Enjoyed this album. Sounded like Television, Roxy Music, and Violent Femmes were put in a blender.

meh, lead singer’s voice got annoying after awhile. 2.5 stars.

The only one word I can think of to describe The Only Ones by The Only Ones is forgettable. Not bad. Not great. Just another old punk rock album buried in this list.

It's alright, but they should have taken the singer's vocal range into account when writing songs. So he wouldn't have to sing like Lou Reed and whoever the singer for the Strokes is. Favorite song: the immortal story

Trodde da va et indie-band fra sånn 10 år siden, og va klar til å gi dårlig score, men så såg eg at albumet va fra 1978. Kan vær litt raus siden dei tydeligvis har tålt tidens tann nokså godt

Meh…

Nice stereo mixing right off the bat. It comes so close to being something special. The vocal style walks a fine line and just doesn't come off strong. It was almost a 4 for me but it never fully popped.

Never heard of them or this --hint of punkish, hint of psychish, mostly pop rockish. The superimpositions on the cover are fitting. I am pretty engaged, mostly, but it occasionally can be too confusing. Is the lead singer bored doing this? Should we be bored watching the tide? I'll have to listen again before I rate it.

I had forgotten that Another Girl Another Planet was by this lot. It’s got a great end of the 70s new wave vibe. I loved it back then. Still got a great energy. Nothing mind blowing but frenetic and fun.

I tried to like this, and I did to a point. It started with some promise, and there were moments within that clicked, but on the whole, I kept thinking the vocalist was very reminiscent of the Violent Femmes but the material lacked the pith and immediacy of the Femmes, and I kept thinking I'd rather be listening to them.

The Wikipedia classified them a punk but I would not. I listened to this on a long drive with Adler in which we talked the whole time about music and returning to how we would classify this album. I think we ended up with postpunk psychedelic shoe gazer somethingorother. I enjoyed this but really need to go back and have a listen without all the chit chat.

Decent, another girl another planet is on a different level to other tracks

Another Girl Another Planet is a timeless pop rock song. I was quite pleasantly surprised that the rest of the album had more substance than I expcted; The Only Ones have always been a one hit wonder in my mind. That being said, I can't say I really felt the need to go back to any other tracks, just an ok album for me. Fave Tracks: Another Girl Another Planet 3.4/5

Nice but not more. Maybe I need to listen a few more times.

Singer's voice is dull, but otherwise this album was okay.

Not the biggest fan of the singer, but everything else was great with this album. The horns that pop up on a few of the songs are a nice touch. Kind of gave me King Giz vibes throughout the whole album . This was pushing a 4 but not quite there

Some of the vocals are annoying but work in that weird punk way. Really loving The Beast. Like most of the punk on here, I really liked some parts but thought others were meh. Certainly not the worst I've heard though. Solid 3.

It's okay. The singer constantly sounded drunk.

I think this album had something different going. Felt like a more modern that sound than what I expected from a '78 album. Didn't really find any song that stood out, but most of it was still decent. Deadshot 3 for me.

Fun rock album that sounds like it should come from the 90s. I liked "Another Girl, Another Planet" and "City of Fun". It was a good rock album but most of the songs didn't leave a lasting impression. The 2 songs mentioned were a step above the rest.

not bad at all

Never heard, pretty dope

Gillade inte solisten o hans lyrics så värst..

Some great noise and guitar work on this rock’n’punk album but something was missing. The second track was covered by REM, I’m told, and that was a highlight.

Mind blown this is the original another girl another planet

I never heard about them before. It's a good album in the most standard way to be a good album. I can see their influence somehow when I listen to Coldplay or Imagine Dragons, so I guess they should provide a very nice live concert. It would look like something very ahead of their time for 1978.

I can't get past this guy singing like Lou Reed with a head cold. Nice power pop. Until the singing starts.

Pretty good, a little offbeat.

Bands like this are why this app exists. Just good, back to basics rock n roll that deserves to be heard. I wish I'd known The Only Ones sooner.

Overall I liked it, but found some parts cheesy or annoying.

It’s okay, but nothing mindblowing. The vocals were kind of annoying at times

It's OK, reasonably listenable punk/indie type rock - but there's an obvious reason why no-one has ever heard anything by this band other than 'Another girl, another planet'. It's a mile above anything else on the album.

A decent rock album from the late 70s, that would be on the cusp of being a pop album. The Only Ones debut was a decent release that felt like they had some room for improvement in their latter albums (without having listened to them as yet). Best: City Of Fun Worst: Peter And The Pets

They are definitely not the only ones

Qualcuna carina. Album abbastanza gradevole ma senza canzoni particolarmente significative.

Sounds a bit like Violent Femmes. Not too bad

Didn’t pay too much attention to the album. The sound is fun and a bit weird, using strange lyrics and guitar licks. Kinda sounded like indie rock, especially with the lead singer’s whiny voice. Doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is a plus, but then again I also didn’t take listening to it seriously neither. An okay album. Standouts: Another Girl, Another Planet, The Beast, It’s The Truth, and Lovers of Today.

Enjoyable, decent. Nothing super amazing though.

Very Violent Femmes sound

Another Girl, Another Planet was familiar. Interesting that this shares both stylistic and lyrical similarities with Ash's later Girl From Mars. They sound a bit like Television at times, especially on "The Immortal Story". I quite like some of this, but only about half the tracks. Low 3.

Fine . Less punky that expected a touch of pub rock

i was skeptical at first but enjoyed it more and more as time went on. high 3

I know and like one song off this album. The rest was not that great.

No Peace for the Wicked'. Aantrekkelijk in z'n eigenaardigheid. 7/10 Highlights: The Whole of the Law Another Girl, Another Planet No Peace for the Wicked

"Another Girl Another Planet" is an absolute masterpiece of sad eyed junkie guitar pop, and while the rest of the album doesn't reach this high, it still scratches an inch somewhere in between the Buzzcocks and Johnny Thunders pretty nicely

The Only Ones are a British, punk/pop band that were more of a critical success than a commercial one. Their music is melancholy version of upbeat, 70s punk, The Only Ones is a good enough band to have been more famous, popular music is not always predictable.

Thoughts before listening: Never heard of these guys before...must be British. Based on the year of release and cover I'm going to say this will be punky new wave. Review: Definitely British, and this is more of a power pop sound than the new wave I was expecting. Reminds me a bit of Elvis Costello maybe or some later 80s post-punk bands. I can also see these guys being an influence on a band like the Libertines. It seems like the biggest hit was "Another Girl, Another Planet", and thats probably the best song here. As a whole, this is a nice surprise of an album. 3-stars.

A couple of great songs, but the album wears out its welcome by the end. It sounds a bit grating taken as a whole, and what read as fun on some early tracks ends up verging on tedious by the end.

Subdued punk with undertones of the Velvet Underground

Звучит как относительно современное инди 00-ых из Британии. И это странным образом комплемент. Естественно, если альбом вышел в 78 году, когда солиста группы The Kooks еще не было и в проекте. А может и был. Без разницы. Лучшая песня - Another Girl, Another Planet.

frekar gott hrátt rokk. svipar aðeins til television, söngvarinn aðallega. gefa þessu annan séns. 3,5

Very good album. Listening to it, I thought it might have been recorded in the 90s. The Only Ones sound like some Britpop bands from that era. Good guitar rock with strong songwriting and a quirky English energy. I like the lead vocals, heavy on the accent. My favorite tracks are the easygoing opener “The Whole of the Law” and the sloppy punk of “Language Problem.” 3.5

Fun punk rockish album that is surprisingly dynamic. The softer moments tended to be the ones that I enjoyed even more. I hear a bit of Iggy Pop and the New York Dolls in here. 3/5. Not super memorable for me, but probably mostly because this proto punk sound is pretty prevalent on the list.

Not quite the revelation I was hoping for, but nonetheless a good album. ‘Another Girl, Another Planet’ remains a great single.

Grew on me over the course of the album... did I *have* to hear it before I died though?

Far too musical to be punk. Precursor to Psychedelic Furs? It does get more snarly and raucous, but the initial musicality (saxophone!) lifts this above usual 1978 "punk" - perhaps closer to glam rock? Not everything with a guitar and urgency from 1978 is punk.

Got better as it went on, but the singer's voice is a bit whiney and it got to me.

Already like Another Girl Another Planet. The music here is solid. Really well performed. The singing is where it gets sticky. Sometimes it’s totally on target. And sometimes it ruins an otherwise good track. I want to love this, but that voice drags and grates a little too much.

It is an OK album

Loved some songs and not so much others. It's a decent album. I like the sound

Late 70s proto-alt rock goodness. Atonal-ish singing, to me seems like a Dinosaur Jr. influence. Poppy at times, but stays a little melancholy and grounded for most of the album. Feels like the entrance to a small town mall.

So many white dudes with guitars in the 70s

The low energy vocals sound kinda funny. Especially on some of the more upbeat songs like Creature Of Doom. I quite like their guitar and bass sound

Fun rock album. Was worried I was in for hating it when the sax started in the first song but was pleasantly surprised where the album went.

Creative, brave, weird. Hard to describe. The Kinks’ younger brothers/the Hoodoo Gurus’ uncles??

I'm unsure if he's singing or he's simply shagged out after a nine hour struggle with a particularly recalcitrant and pointy shit. It's also nice that he clarifies he doesn't want to fuck his mum. I'm sure she'll be glad to hear it.

Crunchy, mix of punk and rock - nice

A pretty solid rock and roll album. Great instrumentals and different elements from the band. I just don't like the vocals very much. I don't like the sound of the singers voice.

Not my kinda punk rock

I had never heard of this band before, so this was a genuine discovery for me and a very pleasant surprise. Another Girl, Another Planet is a brilliant song. Instantly catchy, full of energy and with that slightly raw late seventies edge. It is one of those tracks that grabs you straight away and refuses to let go. The album as a whole is really enjoyable. It sits somewhere between punk urgency and classic melodic songwriting, which works well for me. There is attitude, but there are also strong hooks and memorable choruses. It feels like a band with real personality. I went in not knowing what to expect and came away genuinely impressed. Always a good sign. Favourite song: Another Girl, Another Planet Least favourite: None that stood out negatively Album artwork: Very much of its era. Simple, understated and cool

Kind of disappointing as I thought this might have been a hidden gem. I will say side B was quite interesting

Cool old rock record. Some catchy tunes. Worth a re-listen.

Not my normal cup of tea for music, but I didn't mind it as much as I thought I was. I am not a fan of punk music, and I don't feel as though this album is just chalked full of punkish music, so there is that going for it. Songs I particularly liked were Another Girl, Another Planet along with Peter and The Pets.

I never heard of this band before Breaking Down sounds like psychodelic rock and City Of Fun was fun In general it sounds as if Pink Floyd went down a punky path and jammed with The Clash and The Police. Also, I hear some Libertines.

I couldn't decide on this one, like a few songs but then found annoying after a while.

Noch nie von der Band gehört, und als der Gesang losging, dachte ich erst: "Woah dafuq that's Bri'ish". Das 2. Lied ("Another Girl, Another Planet") gefällt mir aber richtig gut, hat was (brit-)pop-punkiges. City of Fun ist tatsächlich fun. Der Rest ist okay. Aber die Stimme, naja, muss man mögen.

I don’t remember The Only Ones, but a couple of these songs sounded familiar. Well crafted tunes!

Kind of laid back punk; starting to listen to the record I was expecting something more pop oriented, but there are nice pieces of rock and punk in it. Some good guitar parts and the bass is really present, round and clear. The best songs are the fastest ones, the slower ones are more forgettable and the broken voice of the singer sounds better when he's not too drawling.

bastante normalito en plan indie kid. no me quedé con la mejor canción. 6/10

- City Of Fun

One standout track (another girl another planet)

Once again an album that is ok but seemed nothing special.

Definitely not familiar with these guys at all, but it's very recognizable an familiar. I love the late 70s power pop punk stuff. Super fun and enjoyable record.

They have the vibes but not the hooks.

Ok, don’t love it or hate it.

As My Wife Says, is this another one of your weird music choices? Maybe, but it could just be a Language Problem.

Somewhere in between

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Creature of doom

me dio como una nostalgia (?). Algunos temas están para escucharlos mientras te tomas un vino y piensas en la vida. me gustó pero no tanto.

Brings a vibe that embodies the era of “Buzzcocks”. Has a Neil Young-esque mellow sound in the instrumentals mixed with an earlier punk vocal style. Not really my vibe— but can appreciate it.

Fairly tame, rock/punk vibe. Not my jam, but could be OK for some easy listening

Good, not great

Never heard before

I can see how this would have been influential at the time but so many better bands have improved on this since then that it seems banal now.

Accidentally listened to this twice without realizing it… kinda liked it the second time but still generic punk to my ears

Kinda reminds me of The The but more new wave-y. And not as good lol. But the jazz shit is great.

Sounds a bit like Television and a bit like Magazine. But with with more New Wave. The album sounded a bit meh at first, but it grew on me.

Decent rock, not stand out.

Quite interesting for its time and genre. Appealed more to me than Sex Pistols or the Ramones thats for sure. Sounds a lot more well considered than other peers - mad that these werent much much bigger. Another Girl Another Planet is worthy of global fame on its own, then chuck in Language Problem, Breaking Down, The Beast, quite a few decent songs for a band that ‘never made it’. A chunk of it passed me by but that’s maybe because it aint my thing. Either way, on a whole it’s very decent

Hadn't heard of these guys before but I'm familiar with "another girl, another planet".... Must've been on an advert or something? Bit of a strange one as I quite enjoyed the higher tempo, more pop punky tracks, but then there were slower ones that I didn't so much. Not bad at all though. Highlights: Another girl, another planet (best track by far) City of fun Think 3.5 is fair

A decent album. The vocalist's nasal, "teacher's-pet" voice quality got under my skin at first, although I warmed up to it slightly by the album's conclusion. It works decently as background music. The band sounds like very, very discount Rush mixed with some Bowie and Velvet Underground. The second track, "Another Girl, Another Planet", is a futuristic-sounding standout. It (strangely) reminded me of the Beatles' track Let It Be, but with a power-pop, 80s spin. Guitars are solid. The opening track, "The Whole Of The Law", is also pretty good, as is the instrumental second halves of "The Immortal Story" and "Peter And The Pets". However, the track quality dips as the album continued and the songs' sounds begin to sound less unique and more derivative. Passionate playing, but the compositions aren't there. Plus, as mentioned previously, the vocal is very bad.

Well-crafted, thoughtful power-pop. Obviously 'Another Girl...' is a classic in any genre. The rest doesn't live quite up to that but it's an enjoyable listen.

Totally new to me. Really nice guitar playing all over this thing. Still sounds pretty fresh and exciting. A really nicely maturing punk sound. The lack of many really standout tracks keeps it at a 3 but it's a high 3
