good power pop sound good songs and what’s with the jazzy breakdown on breaking down?

I like this but (compared to other punk bands) this isn’t quite as good 4/5 though still brilliant!

First punk rock I listened to, very enjoyed. Nice continuity between pieces.

Wasn't too sure about this with the first few songs, but it really went off in the right direction imo. Interesting mix of punk, psychedelia and other things I'm not quite educated to name. Good stuff. Saved songs: Breaking Down, Creature Of Doom, It's The Truth, As My Wife Says

This is fun! I'd call it proto-punk, proto-Brit pop from the late 70s. The lead singer has a very distinctive, almost drawling voice which I think you either love or hate (I like it). The opening track is great. It has some Velvet Underground vibes for me. I would definitely listen again.

This is about as grunge as the 1970’s would get, from what I’ve heard. Honestly a solid listen.

New wave. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Love this album. I see this band get lumped in frequently with punk, but The Only Ones were really on their own track in a lot of ways. Some songs are raucous and energetic like the best English punk. But the band is also surprisingly nuanced as well, with strong melodies and alternating jagged-to-jangling guitars. They also played around with more complex uses of keyboards and horns than you might expect in this type of band. Peter Perrett's splendidly insouciant vocals make him sound a bit like an English Lou Reed, but it's a style that also probably influenced numerous post-punk era singers. Fave Songs: Another Girl, Another Planet; The Whole of the Law; No Peace for the Wicked; City of Fun; The Immortal Story

Loved this one, again a nice surprise from 1001.

Really enjoyed this. The beast is a beast of a song

Pretty great 70s pop punk. Didn't know it but like it.

Muy buen disco de rock con todos los ingredientes básicos de un grupo del que no conocía nada. Quizás la voz sea lo único que falle un poco. Podría haber sido un disco muy recordado

Pretty solid classic rock!

never heard this before and really enjoyed it.

I’d never heard of this band, another hole in my U.S.-centric knowledge of pop music culture. I liked this a lot, though the vocal delivery bordered on a territory of affectation I dislike, and struck me as the weakest component of the music. I’d like to spend more time with this band and get to know the lyrics, which I wasn’t giving much concentration.

Previously unfamiliar with both artist and album, I felt this was a very accesable introduction to The Only Ones. The melodies are on point and unlike many punk and new wave bands of their era, the musicianship is top notch. The standout track is 'Another Girl, Another Planet' which is insanely catchy while still carrying a lo-fi garage sound. No wonder it apparently became their signature song. 'City of Fun' is another catchy one, and 'Breaking Down' sees the group going full jazz with groovy 70s keys. The Only Ones might have been long forgotten along with the vast majority of their contemporaries if not for their capabilities behind their instruments. Moments like the tight 'Creature of Doom' and THAT GUITAR on 'Language Problems' make this album a very nice acquaintance indeed.

Is it new wave? Is it punk? Is it pop? I don't know and I honestly don't care if the product is as fun as The Only Ones. Peter Perrett is terribly British and half the time it sounds like he's only half invested in recording the songs - but somehow it only adds to the experience. Songs like "Another Girl, Another Planet" and "Language Problem" are especially fun with Perrett really showing off on the latter. On the other hand I'm not quite as interested when they go for a more straight on punk(ish) approach like on "City Of Fun". Huge praise for keeping this at a length of barely more than half an hour. Thight and with absolutely no time for bullshit.

Good, can see where some of the younger bands get their inspiration

First listen. Never heard of the band and was pleasantly surprised. Add d the album to my library.

Good power pop from an obscure band. Only so much could be done with the genre at the time, since bands like Jellyfish and the Posies were still several years away.

Quite good album. Reminds me of something like T. Rex but with more punk feel. 3.75/5

This surprised me, if only because I was unfamiliar with this group until yesterday. But this is solid punk with a power rock tinge, and I could see this being a solid gap between the Ramones and Cheap Trick back in the day. I don’t think they got a chance in the states, though. B

New wave. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Grato descubrimiento. Power popnew wavepunk rock. Finales de los 80.

I expected little, but was pleasantly surprised.

I'm used to the phenomenon where you can't really perceive any accent in (English-language) singing so it's always feels a little weird when someone sounds super British. Enjoyed the album tho

Nice pink vibes. Overall pleasant to listen to but missing an x factor

Solid album, worth vinyl possibly

Pretty solid, sounds like it was an influential album

Never heard before and would probably listen again

Not bad, enjoyed the listen

Another Girl... is a banger. Some brilliantvtracks toward the end

An interesting one

Pretty great - power pop. I’m with it.

This was really great! Never heard of this band before!

Really good album, with a few brilliant songs. Another girl, another planet was the stand out for me, with The whole of the law, Creature of doom, and As my wife says, all very enjoyable. Not sure it's quite a five 🌟, but a solid 4 🌟 effort. I loved it

A clear punk influence. Some great buildups. The musicians work really well together.

Some really great songs, particularly of course Another Girl Another Planet

Cool, a good find. Not all songs were great, but I enjoyed the punk vibes with good musicianship

Oh wow! Who turned up the drama to eleven?! That first track is terrible with those operetta voice and lovesick lyrics. Fortunately the balance of the album doesn't follow that first one "The Whole of the Law". I love the diversity of instruments used on the record, and the raw guitar with short breakouts like the one that opens City of Fun. However, please save us the 'my voice is awesome lemme show you my vibrao skills' crap. I don't care about any of that and I can't imagine any of your fans do either. I'm kind of a sucker for this era of intelligent lo-fi polished punk from the late 70s. I'd never heard of The Only Ones and happy to have been turned on to them.

My heart and soul! Everything I love in rock in one album. Riffs, solos, fast tempos, punk, hard rock, and pop in one. Loved it. Great rock songs. Would only knock on the vocals, could have been more passionate.

Nice discoverment

First time hearing of this band...enjoying the sound. Serious Television vibes. Seems like they would also have influence on future BritPop (Pulp esp.). 4/5

Great album. Can't believe I've never even heard of the band before. Nick Lowe vibes. Another Girl, Another Planet reminded me of something, but then I found out Blink182 covered it - seems right.

Great album. I was only familiar with Another Girl, Another Planet Good punk music that doesn't make me feel too intimidated.

Pretty good! This the 8th album I've listened to for the 1001 Albums List, and it's the first one where I've just completely never heard of the band. I really enjoyed it though! Just some fun 70s punk music. I might end up going back to it sometime. Definitely glad I heard it, even though nothing completely blew me away.

Good voice It's good Sounds like Magazine Warrants repeat listens It's excellent

Good album I enjoyed all the tracks. Another discovery from this list. 4.3

Never heard of this band before. Seemed pretty good after on listen. I didn’t realize that “The Whole of the Law” was their song; only familiar with Yo La Tengo’s version.

Alt Punk in beiden Sinnen des Wortes Alt Geil!

Drive rock music with a gravelly voice

There's a couple of standout songs here.

I've always had a soft spot for So You Want To Be A Rock 'N Roll Star, with it's comically rolling bassline, Latin beat and sardonic lyrics. Have You Seen Her Face has a lovely vocal arrangement and is Beatlesque in the best sense. My Back Pages is a stellar Dylan cover. And the Byrd's harmonies are just gorgeous. At their best, the Byrds' combination of folk rock, country, psychedelia and pure pop is a delight. But I'm sorry to say that Younger Than Yesterday is not a very good album. The attempts at psychedelia here are amateurish and juvenile, ruining the otherwise fine C.T.A. - 102. Roger McGuin's attempts at lead guitar throughout are an embarrassment. And other than the first two songs and the Dylan cover, the songwriting is weak. Two stars for the three strong tunes mentioned, zero stars for the rest. 2/5

What a fun little gem I've never heard before. Adding this to the regular rotation.

Very cool precursor to things that I have liked for a while.

This has some of those lazy sparkle-pop vibes that bands in the 2010s were going for, and it definitely works. I like this, sometimes low-fi lite, sometimes psychedelic and surf-rocky, always with that classic 70s feel that it just can't shake.

Nice find! "Interesting funk" My favorites are the least-popular (according to Spotify)

Enjoyed. Too peppy for work though

Smooth garage rock like this is a treasure

fun melodies and instruments I do not like the voice, its just not the type of voice that I enjoy in a song, so I think that stops this from having a higher ranking. Would listen again to some of the songs just not the whole album No peace for the wicked felt like backlash for that bad relationship you never get fully over, ouch

less offensive than the other 70s british rock. borderline listenable

Medium. Cool cover.

Pretty good listen, but doesn't have anything that stands out or memorable.

Kinda pop-ish British punk-ish. I thought I was going to really hate this album when I hit play on the first song, but it got a lot better. Not bad at all. I think I could listen to this one again. There weren't really any moments when I wanted to skip a song, besides the first.

I’ve literally never heard of this band, which is actually pretty rare. But I mostly like this record pretty good. The singer sounds a good deal like Gordon Gano from Violent Femmes; I can understand why that vocal tone would be polarizing, but I don’t mind. Most of the songs are well crafted enough, and I’m enjoying that I’m not really sure what to expect as I’m listening. It’s fun being surprised with a band I’ve never heard of and who I actually kind of enjoy. 7.5/10

Musically, The Only Ones were way ahead of their time. Their blend of psychedelia, punk, and power pop sounds like the alt-rock that would define the 90s. Unfortunately it's a messy, drug fueled album that leans on its punk backbone to excuse missed notes, lazy background vocals, and worse, lead vocals that are an acquired taste (that I do not have).

Imagine the stooges and television fronted by a minor character from a Ken loach drama. Got that? Well now add some sax and the occasional weird chord change. That’s pretty much this album. Come for another girl another planet and stay for the stooges-esque crunch of the stooges. Nearly a 4 star but 1 too many album tracks

Never heard of this before. First song, oh no saxophone, I hated that trend. 2nd song, oh! I didn’t even know the blink song was a cover! Some of the rest were alctually pretty good, but some cheesy synths also, but maybe back then people thought those were great.

Kuuntelin kahesti kun tuntu että menee vaan toisesta korvasta sisään ja toisesta ulos. Sentään menee, ei mitään vastalauseita multa mutta ei kyllä mikään myöskään herättäny erityisesti huomiota. Aivan ok työskentelyn taustamusiikkia mutta nothing to write home about...?

Pretty standard 70's rock. Quite listenable but nothing spectacular.

Couple of good songs, but the rest of the album is a bit iffy

An odd one, started well, then a few strange songs. Overall ok.

I was hoping to enjoy this more

really good young punk pop. Very Violent Femmes-like. I wish they had stayed together long enough to mature through the 80's.

Mediocre 70s rock. Nothing to get excited about, nothing to be annoyed by.

:D Mut tää oli aivan jepaa rokin räimettä, Language Problem ja As My Wife Says parhaimmistoa biiseistä!

Another Girl, Another Planet is such a great tune, rest of the album is a bit of a mix bag.

Is there peace for the wicked?

- I know I ain’t the biggest punk rock fan but I must say I’m enjoying this

Ok rock.

Way better than i thought it would be Enjoyable stuff throughout. Last song Great When the Orchestra comes from no where its Great. Good stuff

The band is tight, playing the sort of retro 60s punkish, sub-Buzzcocks thing that was the style at the time. The singers has a voice that is... well... distinctive, although, to be fair, in '78 so did everyone else, so having a distinctive voice was pretty indistinctive. The songs seem to be written by that slightly scruffy, intense kid you were all a bit scared of at school, who was always scribbling in a notebook he wouldn't let anyone else see. It's all "running from the beast" and "there's only one way out and you know it" and "if I don't say anything you'll know it's the truth." So profound. But they did produce "Another Girl, Another Planet", three minutes of magnificent pop perfection that sticks out from the rest of the album like the sheer fluke it seems to be. Without that song this would be a generous 2 stars. With it, it's a solid 3.

I could stand to give out more 3's from time to time. This one falls into that category for me.

The music was okay, but didn't think much of the singing. Just scrapes in as a 3.

22/05/2026 I have to go with the general consensus here... a solid meh from me. Spotify listeners: 131.5k

70’s soft rock

Low-fi 70’s punk

Familiar and comforting sounds that speak of an era

I don't know man. It's okay. I'm mildly hungover

whatever. there were a couple good songs. i liked the single and the one with the organ solo

moments like these i'm reminded this list was written by a brit. steve lillywhite jumpscare. an argument: steely dan but Epic. an addendum: no. nvm. 3.2-3.8. add "another girl, another planet" to the (increasingly) long & storied pop music heroin canon. add "the beast" to the "needs to be two minutes shorter" canon. add "language problems" to the "make more of the record like this" canon. "lovers of today" makes the "not on the original tracklist but i fw it" canon. john perry can play the fuck out of a guitar. thank you Mistress Dometria.

A classic example of a really good band that didn't break through. The album was nice but I really question whether you have to listen to this album before you die.

*1978. *This is kinda cool - it sounds like modern day alternative (similar to Cage the Elephant or Group Love) but set in the 70s. *Not memorable at all, but it was a fun 41 minutes. RATING - 6.5/10

There's one good song on here, the rest of it is a bit of a disjointed mess. I don't mind the singers voice on the faster, punkier songs, but it's pretty grating on the slower tracks. I'm not the biggest Television fan but seems they do this post-punk thing a lot more effectively than this lot, although when they lock into a groove on a few of the outros it can be rewarding. A handful of the titles sound like they might have come from an Iron Maiden LP of this era (The Beast, Creature of Doom). It's all a bit confusing, I've listened once and not sure if I like it or not, but at least I wasn't bored. A light 3.

The Only Ones is the type of album that's blessed and cursed with having a song that's so clearly superior to the rest that it really makes it hard to judge properly. Even after a couple of listens, I still think this is just a decent album elevated by a moment of brilliance right at the start. Favourite track: Another Girl, Another Planet

Better than I expected - but I feel like it’s going to take a few more listens to really get into it. Call it 2.5 rounded up to 3

It was short, a refreshing change, but having one good song does not make this a good album

Not a bad album.

One of those, one good song and the rest is pretty forgettable, albums.

All the problems and heights of 70s punk in one album. There are some masterful guitar works-- Like Another Girl, Another Planet-- but much of it is dreary tunes attempting to be innovative. 3/5

I'll say this about this album: it was pretty good. 2.75/5

it’s a new vibe for me!

This album is putting me to sleep. 3/5 Creature of Doom is a decent enough track.

Musically okay, but the vocals are very bad. Not a bad singing voice but just horrible delivery. 3/5

Not terrible but not terribly good.Outside of their big hit there’s little to commend this album. Just seems a bit average

Loved it!

Track 1 had me thinking this was gonna be way worse, but there's some cool guitar-playing and soloing going on here. Still, I don't find it to be essential listening.

I was really bummed because I wanted to dig this album, especially with how tight and cool their instruments were. The band totally knows how to write catchy tunes, mixing punk energy with jazz and psychedelic rock, it's awesome. Songs like "Another Girl, Another Planet" are straight-up bangers, and it's clear they're super talented and influenced other bands like the Violent Femmes and The Replacements. The production is good, and the guitar playing is often amazing, so it's like a hidden gem. But, I just can't get over the vocals. It's a shame because the music is so good, but the whiny, thin, and often off-key singing kills it for me. Some might say it's cool, but to me, it's just an annoying whine that ruins the songs.

While punk rock had only just emerged in the mid-1970s, by the end of the decade it wasn't exactly dead, but artists had grown tired of its classic format and began trying to diversify the genre. Sometimes this was completely unnecessary, as was the case with The Only Ones. Their debut album follows a clear rule: if a song is built on a few quickly played chords, it's not bad; if it's layered with prog, jazz, oriental music, or psychedelia, it becomes overloaded, like an Art Deco column stuck in the middle of an IKEA-decorated apartment. But the weakest point here is the voice. It feels like the singer slept for an hour and a half before recording and was then dragged into the studio with a noose around his neck. Objectively, the album doesn't reach a three stars mark, but I'll push it up, because for some reason I'm sure (although I can't prove it) that without this album there wouldn't have been the wonderful band called The Libertines.

#95/1001 🇬🇧 From the year i was born. A great year for music. I've known and loved Another Girl Another Planet for years and danced to at countless indie nights in my youth but never gone beyond this until today. I was expecting something louder and punkier on account of its era but it has much more instrumentaly than guitar, bass and drums. It has a rambling, unpolished sound which you hear later on in bands like The Replacements, Violent Femmes and The Libertines. I'm a bit mixed on this record, it doesn't start well but there are some real gems in here. I should give it another listen. Best Tracks: Another Girl Another Planet, Breaking Down, Language Problem.

TIL Another Girl Another Planet was not a Jesus & Mary Chain original

I knew another girl another planet. Its great. The rest is hit and miss to be fair.

A solid rocking album that’s brought down by below-replacement-level lead vocals.

Pretty classic bit of guitar driven new wave. Obviously, the single stands out, but the whole album is pretty strong

Is there an instrumental version? Or with a different voice? Everyone except the main vocalist is killin it

Super likeable in a really nostalgic way. Film soundtracks and adverts. Nice.

It's fine, not amazing. Stand-outs - Breaking Down

Parts of this were good, felt kinda like a milder Buzzcocks at times, but generally didn't grab me too much. "Another Girl, Another Planet" and "Language Problem" were the faves on here.

I wasn’t sure about the first track, but this turned out to be a solid late-70s power pop record, like a last gasp for rock music of that kind. I could see the vocals being divisive (I was a little put off by them at first). The everyman, extremely British delivery ended up charming me and works surprisingly well with the female backing vocals. Produced well and it’s aged better than some of its contemporaries. I can hear some 2010s indie rock in the weeds here. I’d revisit. Strong three.

I had absolutely no idea who this lot were, and remain none the wiser after listening to them - even after falling down a Wiki rabbit hole. But I weirdly enjoyed this. It’s just on the right side of heading towards new wave than punk, and you could hear how this sound would get developed further in the next year or two post its release by bands like Japan. I did not enjoy the vocals, which keeps it from a 3.5* score from me (and thus a debate on if I’m feeling generous enough to go into 4*).

Mixed feelings about this album. It starts well enough. Another Girl, Another Planet is a strong, greatest-hits-of-punk standard and Breaking Down meddles around with lounge jazz and prog-rock. Standards remain high through the whole of vinyl Side 1 before an alarming slip from tracks 6 to 10. It's The Truth seems like a meandering stream of consciousness while No Peace For The Wicked is just neither here nor there, and bit throwaway. The Immortal Story is saved by the classic album outro - if you listen on Spotify the last 3 bonus tracks come across as a bit of a pest so I won't include them in the review. 3 stars for a good first half, mediocre second.

not bad

It was fine to listen to but rather ordinary and this is not a band I am likely to listen to on a repeat basis. No standout songs.

Easy listening but pretty unremarkable for the most part, Another Gr, Another Planet is the stand out track by a big margin.

Good album Song I like: The whole of the law, another girl a other planet, City of fun, Peter and the pets,

It's not bad and has some good moments but a little uninspired feeling Will I listen to again: 15%

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would for a band I’d never heard of before, but ultimately didn’t take away anything that would cause me to listen again or explore much further.

I've never heard of these guys so this is a completely fresh listen. It was good. Really good. However....also "meh". Glad I got to hear this thing but I swear I'll never understand this list's criteria for an album.

this album is good and all but wait until you hear their second album

I see why it’s called “power pop.” Apt description of what they do. Decent album.

Another one that is just fine but not for me.

good brit pop.

English (kinda pejorative).

No está mal

quick and easy

a few great tracks

Average.

You know what, it was actually a half-decent listen to be fair, I thought the instrumentals were all pretty good. The vocals were slightly questionable but decent enough to still make an fairly enjoyable listen.

After only knowing Another Girl Another Planet, this was quite an eye opener. Coming in on the coat tails of punk I expected a certain rawness and angry energy. But what I got was a quite interesting variety of genres from the later day punk to jazz and most stops in between. There were 3 or 4 really good tracks separated by the mediocre. On the whole I'm glad to have listened to it, and it would probably benefit from a register. But I probably won't get around to it. Worth a 3 of anyone's money.

This was an enjoying album and a cool sound - I had never heard of them! Very Lou Reed adjacent with a fun but approachable punk-rock/pop sound. Love the singers voice as well. At a certain point the songs started to blend a bit, and I think there are a few too many songs in general on here. This was a good one! Top Songs: Another Girl, Another Planet, The Whole of the Law, It's the Truth, No Peace for the Wicked

I liked this. I wasn't sure at first with Peter Perrett's voice, but it grew on me. I liked the energy of the songs.

This was an interesting album to listen to. I'm surprised they didn't land higher in the charts. With only 3 studios releases I guess they were limited musical wise and couldn't breakout of punk style music.

Not bad. Singer needs a sinus operation

what a voice

pretty solid

not bad

Quite enjoyed this. Another girl, another planet is a top track.

Like a 70's precursor to The Strokes, but with more nuance and better guitar riffs. The song about suggesting someone kill themselves did not age well. Not cool.

Some pretty good jamming (guitar and bass).

Surprise. I enjoyed it

Can hear the influence on post-punk and jangly indie rock to come. Enjoyed it.

New to me, and quite good. Sounds like the missing link between Violent Femmes, Pavement, T. Rex and Television. Favorite Song: The Beast

Mid-rock

A clear case of how easily the wrong lead singer can ruin a good sound. Good music, but the nasal, thin voice just doesn’t work.

Better than expected after listening to the whole album, not great, but not terrible, but I don't think I need to hear any more of such albums. 3 stars at most.

For a debut album is alright, certainly promising. Obviously the promise never fully materialised.

Can't quite get on board with this sort-of-glam punk that has the odd great flash but is ultimately forgettable. It's better than my 2s but not by a lot.

ok so , not like bad .

5/10 Favorite: No Peace For The Wicked

Cool instrumentation, edgy lyrics. Not sure it deserved a spot on this list (there's better Brit/power pop out there IMO) but still a good listen.

Excellent stuff, holds up well. Not quite essential though, but worth a re-listen

Cracking instrumentation, lyrically pretty nice. A voice that is certainly divisive: sometimes it sounds strangled and unpleasant, sometimes it meets the lyrical content perfectly. Reminds me of the singer from the Buzzcocks with a voice that isn't for everybody. Some catchy songs and 'Another girl, another planet' is of course pretty timeless.

another girl another planet all time banger rest is okay

When I saw rock from 1978 i got excited. That said, on first pass through I thought this is "just ok". Like pretty cool for 1978 but frankly not sure why this made the list. Then i listened again and got a different experience. Maybe not good enough to shout this from the rooftops but it's an interesting album with spunk. With a mixture of styles, a little garage, a little glam, a little proto punk I bet the Artic Monkeys have heard this album a couple times...

I have never heard of this band before. This album is pretty good.

A bridge between what came before and what lurks ahead. They were early to the funny voice game inhabited by Alex Chilton, Robyn hitchcock and Jonathan Richman - other artists also caught between two decades that wrote quirky pop songs. And they definitely listened to some New York Dolls. Another Girl remains a masterpiece.

Шарив тільки another girl another planet, але загалом доволі цікаво.

Ok - this is cool. It’s clearly late 70s and the post punk world. Reminds me of quite a lot of stuff from that period (that I like). Amazingly never heard this before….going into rotation! Singer does suck though. 3

I’m never really sure what power pop means exactly except that I like it. These folks sound ranges from Cheap Trick to The Buzzcocks. Catchy, melodic and with a vocalist that got somewhat of a weird affected style. Some really great songs like “Another Girl, Another Planet” and a bunch of filler as well. Not bad.

I liked this album, has a similar vibe to Buzzcocks

I was curious about this, having only heard 'Another Girl Another Planet'. It was pretty much as I expected - post punk with a Velvet Underground influence, although there were some surprisingly jazzy bits. 'Another Girl Another Planet' is very much the standout track, I would have liked more like that.

Didn’t love it, definitely didn’t hate it. Kind of a mix of Bowie, The Beatles, and…I don’t know, The Clash? It wasn’t especially memorable to me, but I could listen again.

This was fine - didn't strike me as anything particularly special but still pleasant enough to listen to

3.5 good stuff

idk i like the sound but damn the vocalist kinda suck ass. it’s a definitely a 3

Good, not great

It wasn't that bad.

First minute of this album, and I see undoubtedly a Cameron Winter inspiration. An album and a band I've never heard of yet an album I happy to now be privy to. The saxophone and exciting instrumentation on each piece, Peter's whiny voice, and the playful vocal harmonization keep you locked in.

Favorite Track: Another Girl, Another Planet

I listen to albums like this, and I realize there’s an entire music scene outside of the United States I just don’t know, and I really should. The first song left me a little off putt, but as the album went on, I liked it more and more, and by the time City of Fun came on I was actually kind of enjoying it. I liked how I had a punk feeling without going full on punk. It reminds me a lot of Violent Femmes. Key songs: Language Problem, and the Immortal Story, which reminded me of GenX Youth Youth Youth. I don’t know if I’d ever go looking for this album, but I sure enjoyed the listen

Random thoughts: * I listened to this last week and am now just getting around to writing the review. I don't remember anything about listening to this. * Even doing a little of re-listening now isn't bringing much back to mind. What does this say about this album? * Listening now, it is kind of glam-pop. Maybe a little Bowie-esque. * Anyway, I guess this one was pretty forgettable for me. Maybe I'll give it another listen.

I wasn’t too sure when the album started but as it went along it ended up being a fun and great listen! A few different kinds of old rock music styles are here. A lot of it reminds me of what Patti Smith had done up to this point so maybe not the most original take on rock but it’s well played and I can see why they would be included here by the British author since they are a British band. I had barely heard of this band in passing so it was good to finally hear this and have it be a good listen which is what I look forward to the most with this project regarding albums I’ve not heard.

Slightly punky, kinda pop rock

Ok. Not the biggest fan of the vocals or song themes

Nothing bad, but very forgettable.

I saw the genre punk and groaned... not again. But it was not punk, more new wave/rock with a mix of different styles. Easy to listen to and have the music playing in the background. The singer sounded like a worse version of the guy from Violent Femmes.

Not bad, but not enough variety.

i was looking forward to this one based on the descriptors i had seen for it, but ultimately found it to be a bit disappointing. second side of the album is stronger than the first side. tonally i don't find it dissimilar to television's 'marquee moon' or perhaps the modern lovers, but the songwriting just doesn't really grip me. obviously the vocals here are going to be the most controversial for people, but i didn't mind them. to me, they've got that post-punk-y apathy. it's not a bad album at all, but i don't know that i found it particularly compelling.

This album kinda grew on me as I listened more. Overall though, I'm not sure why I would ever listen to this one again.

I liked this. It was a good mix of several styles. Almost like they were in between classic rock and punk with heavy influences from both.

Not bad but a little undercooked

Run of the mill Britpop/rock. Astonishingly neutral

These guys sound like nerds.

Quite and interesting album, a pleasant listening 3/5

Whamwie

I don't love it, but I'm guessing it would grow on me.

This has all bad the elements of Television and Velvet Underground (Dated production, "unique" singer, rough around the edges) but none of the elements that make them some of the greatest musicians (great songwriting, interesting and genre pushing ideas, being able to sing a note). What I am trying to say is this is just diet Television and it is not very interesting. It is fine, but no one needs to listen to this before they die, unless they want to listen to the 1001 British albums that you maybe kind of heard of that one time. Mid 3.

Solid but not extraordinary. Singer’s voice bothered me after a while. Really enjoyed the instrumentation on this tho!

Better than Coldplay

It was okay.

6/10 Ok...some promise, but nothing earth shattering. 11-19-2025

Started off kind of bad, got good, then got boring. It's fine.

i appreciate the "odd" sound of a lot of this, but i just cant really get past the sound of his voice. overall it was alright, but i wont be coming back to this one. standout tracks: 💀

Ok album. No real standouts.

So — I'd heard tell that the singer in this band wasn't great. The top-rated review says as much, and a fellow group member had made a point to mention something to that effect. But it's no way the singer is **that bad**, right? How would an album with a singer that bad even get on an album like this? (And let's not talk about Dylan here; he's not bad, he's just incredibly unique.) And, well ... see, I wouldn't even say that this singer's bad so much as they're... Allow me to quickly walk through the experience starting this album. Track one kicks off, and I'm honestly taken by the instrumentation. It's catchy, exciting, very well played ... and it holds true throughout the entire album, but specifically when it hits you at the front of the album it's like, "Damn — I'm in for some good power pop!" And then the singer shows up. And it's not that he's bad, again. It's just that ... he is so obviously the weakest link here. His voice is flat, sort of nasally, and ... jeez, it barely ever modulates. It hardly matters what song it is, and it sure doesn't matter what part of the song it is: he never changes from that dull nasal warble. And it's not like he **can't** sound any better than this; on what's clearly the single reason why this album is on this list, "Another Girl, Another Planet", he doesn't sound bad at all! And then the next song happens and he's back to his nasal moan. It just never stops, and he honestly brings down every song just by his presence. The instrumental could be and often is great, and then he opens his mouth and you end up wondering if **no one else** was capable of taking the mic. It gets even more obvious when the woman in the group takes up backing vocals; she's clearly on another level from him and it just makes it all the more obvious what a weak singer he is. Maybe this kind of singing was just the style at the time (I can sure imagine seeing Big Important Critics™ and the book defending it as "unique"), but, I'unno. To me (and I know I'm not one of the only ones, harr-harr), it's an incredibly distracting detraction. And it really is a shame. Again, the band is **great**. If I could focus more on the instrumentals, I'd probably be feeling a lot more positive about this album. Maybe I wouldn't be claiming it as one of the best of all time, but for sure it'd be one of the stronger power pop albums of the late 70's I've heard. At the very least, they **did** produce a good song in "Another Girl, Another Planet". But as a whole experience, it's not the worst or even unbearable, but it obviously could be so much better than it is. If only the singer were stronger. Sorry, guys.

As the album went on, I became more attuned to the vocals. At first, I didn't really consider them particularly good. However, I started to appreciate what they offered about midway through the album. I suppose you would say this is a bit of a more refined punk album. Possibly a little bit more musical than other bands of that era. Not quite as harsh and raw sounding but without losing that punk element, I think that the songs were punchy, short, sharp, and to the point. They were not groundbreaking, but they weren't terrible either. Favourite track - 'Another Girl, Another Planet'. 7/10

Better than what I was expecting. Never heard of them or this album. Really like the vibe of this one. Will listen to this album again.

Pretty solid music! But why that guy had to open his mouth?

not bad, a bit depressed

With a better singer, this coulda been something. Unfortunately, the Gordon Gano vocals only work with The Violent Femmes.

I really dig the instrumentation here. Some really catchy and fun melodies and riffs here but it’s ultimately undercut by the singer for me.

to be fair the band has good chemistry and riffs and a strong general sound, wasn’t a fan of the vocalist much though, typical rock album really

It was nice It wasn't my type so it is good to listen the song I wasn't able to listen all the songs but The Only Ones I listen are good-great

Estoy, estoy...

Ég fíla sándið en lögin eru ekki mjög eftirminnileg

Will try again later. Didn't really stand out this time, contrary to what their name might lead you to expect.

What a curious band and album. I know both the Wikipedia and "1001 Albums" entries reference the band members' punk roots, but it's hard to hear it on most of the tracks (except maybe "Language problem". That said, Peter Perrett's warble of a voice is strangely beguiling (and often reminds me of Pulp), and their overall sound seems far ahead of their time, more alt-rock/indie than anything from the late 70s. I know their (big?) hit was "Another girl, another planet", but for me the best songs of the album were the opening track "The whole of the law", the somber "Breaking down" and the bizarre "The beast". I'm not sure I'll ever listen to this again, but I'm glad to have heard The Only Ones.

there's a lot of playing around with tempo and dynamics here across the album which I always appreciate. wish I responded to the songs more.

Good but nothing special, enjoyed like half the songs here

Riding the crest of the punk/new wave wave, the Only Ones deliver a safe and satisfying album with their pop smoothing of their more raw, confrontational, and sophisticated peers. One of Steve Lillywhite's earliest project, you can see similarities with his later works. The band didn't prove to have staying power, but this entry is one of the main reasons 1978 is such a great year for music, despite disco*. *I am not anti disco. It just seems to be more of a fad than an actual genre.

The band sounds quite nice. The vocal is an "acquired taste" sometimes, but it goes down better on faster tracks, than slower ones.

3 von 5 kein Banger

Nothing remarkable

Jotenkin ihan jees, mutta vähän perusrokiksi menee välillä. 3/5

Its was good

“Another Girl, Another Planet” rules. The rest sounds like a man grunting his way through an existential bowel movement.

Another Girl, Another Planet is a really good tune and their one hit. A couple other decent tracks (City of Fun,…) but kind of an “also ran” of a new wave-ish sound. Does anyone else hear Robyn Hitchcock here?

Like others, I really like Another Girl, Another Planet, but the rest of the album is just okay.

Well most of this is very middle of the road when heard for the first time nearly 50 years later. But when I heard "No Peace for the Wicked", I thought it had somehow skipped on to Violent Femmes! Now I know one of VF's influences.

Good album

Not bad but nothing special. I wonder how it ended up here?

kinda mid. 3 Stars.

Good listen- another girl is a banger. Bit too repetitive to score higher

Better than I was expecting. I could hear their sound in more modern bands/songs. 2.5 rating

I’m intrigued. It’s some sort of discount version of Television - not only because of the lead singer’s voice. I also get a Bowie/T Rex vibe I need to listen a few more times - however it’s definitely not as strong as for example Television or Magazine

What seemed at first like lazy Brit punk belied some pretty complex musicianship. I liked the album but at no point did I feel my toe threaten a tap.

It's good music, but way too regular for me. 3 stars

Okay. Nice

This album could've been better. "Self-Titled"'s Wikipedia page says it's partly a punk album, but there's barely any in it. I've heard other records similar to "Self-Titled" That singer sounds like an amateur, and that's about the only thing punk about this album. I hope the next album is better. 3 stars for "Self Titled".

# 588 - The Only Ones The Only Ones - Enjoyable, but not essential. This one surprised me. The opening track kicks off with tasty chord changes, solid production, and a vibe that makes you think, “Alright, this could be something.” And then the vocals arrive. Let’s just say they’re… an acquired taste. Rubbish, maybe—but somehow, they mostly work. There’s a mix of good and bad here. The guitar work is unexpectedly sharp in places, and the lyrics occasionally rise above the haze. It’s more tuneful and varied than expected, and while it’s good enough for background music, it rarely demands your full attention. You lean in, get intrigued, and then drift back to your conversation. Best Track (if you must): The Immortal Story – the one that lingers just a little longer than the rest. Verdict: Dreamy, melancholic, and slightly haunting New Wave. Enjoyable, but not essential. Closing thought: Like the band’s name, this album is fine—but far from the only one you need to hear.

This album is not per se my cup of tea, but I understand why it is on this list. It's from the year 1978 and seems to predate what later would be power pop as well as indie rock from the 2000s. If you wouldn't know the release date, you could mistake some passages for stuff that's a lot younger.

He definitely has a voice. I almost gave up on the entire album but a couple songs sort of hit me in the end. Overall not polished. But not all music is supposed to be.

This was pretty solid. Very violent femmes sounding. Some really nice moments, including some standout guitar parts that I normally don’t associate with this genre. but a little too much drone to justify a higher rating. Probably closer to 3.5

Really liked how loose and accessible the instrumentals were, sometimes the punk and punk-adjacent bands can be a little too grating on first listen. I understand the vocalist's very intense English accent will cause controversy among some of us but it worked for me. Solid 3.5.

I should really like this. I love Television and the Replacements and acts that are soincally tangiential to this but there just aren't any standout tracks and the vocals were just utterly grating to me.

Yeah, alright. Some great drums and guitar in here but the vocals didn't really do it for me in parts. I liked another girl another planet and Peter and the pets.

Good but a little whiney for me

Once again, interesting from an historical perspective. Sounds like they influenced Westerberg a bit. Would I ever listen again? Probably not.

Decent post-punk pop; New York influenced; definitely not my preferred vocal style. Kind of trying to be a Cockney Lou Reed? (Jilted John meets Lou Reed, perhaps.) But I liked the musical arrangements and production very much. Eg the instrumental passages on The Beast were really good. Their "big hit" - Another Girl, Another Planet - isn't my favourite track on this album; there are other, more affecting songs. The deceptively throwaway It's The Truth drew me in, for instance. None of it really set me on fire, although you can tell, from the satisfyingly noisy outro on the original album closer, that they'd have been good live. Final point to note - yet another really good drummer. I have a new appreciation of drummers, from this project. PS I don't ever remember them being on Top Of The Pops. Were they?

The guitars are tight and supreme. The band has a Rolling Stones mixed with a ska type horn section. Had they hired a decent singer this may have been a more robust group.

I rather liked this. Quite simple (in a good way) punky rock with a nice energy. Not spectacular but I can enjoy this. Would have been nice live.

koja šteta! bend zvuči dobro i katkad više nego dobro, al vokal mi je nepodnošljiv. situaciju dobro opisao top rivju na ovoj stranici. jebiga

Sounds like a punk guy nursing a bad sinus infection getting the opportunity of a lifetime to showcase his songs when Bette Midler’s touring band’s bus breaks down and they decide to back him up. Some good moments but never quite gels for me. Beasts I think is the highlight.

Perfectly nice, very Television influenced sound.

lite för oklart. inte så bra som jag först trodde, andra låten är t.ex jättebra. behöver nog egentligen lyssnas på igen.

Not the type of songs i usually go for

If you ask anyone of geriatric age, into punk, this is gold. I find it just above passable.

ihan ok mut ei kyl ees mid. 2,5 jos vois antaa

Der gesang ist schnell nervig, schade ansonsten ziemlich gut 3/5

I wasn't sure how much I would like this album after the first song, particularly the vocals. But the second song Another Girl, Another Planet was a lot better - catchy riffs and vocals hung with it. And that's kind of how the album went - some songs I could do without and some songs that were solid. On the solid side, maybe City of Fun, The Beast, Language Problem, and Peter and the Pets. Not sure why but at times it reminded me of the Violent Femmes. All in all, pretty middle of the road.

Album 1001! Still got a few more, apparently, but what an accomplishment. These guys were alright. Kinda punk, I guess. The mix I got on Spotify when the album wrapped up was better than they were so their contemporaries were at least my jam.

“Karl, you’re on another planet mate” Ricky Gervais to Karl Pilkington, XFM. They often played this song, so it was nice to go to the source!

Great instrumentation but the vocals sound pretty bad like depressed British folks smoking opium.

if i had found this during my ramones era, i am certain i would have gone crazy for this. as it is, a few songs definitely made it to my liked. reports of the nasally voice are over exaggerated imo. that's just a british guy singing. liked: another girl another planet, the beast,

Not bad honestly and has some things I kinda like - sort of slacker British vibe with sad-sack lovelorn lyrics, some bits of punk and classic rock, decent guitar work. Another Girl, Another Planet is the standout and kinda reminds of the Replacements or the Hold Steady even. Some sort of ska/reggae-ish bits that remind me of the Clash. The faster/rockier songs are definitely the best. Didn't hate it overall.

Starts out first few songs sounding like it could be cool and experimental 70s rock, singing is tough but can be charming. Ends up sounding very boring and filler

New wave one hit wonders. One stone cold banger, the rest of the album tries (and fails) to keep up. This one being on here is a genuine head scratcher. Best Songs: Another Girl, Another Planet; The Beast; Language Problem

221/1089 - Strange voice, competent music, nothing too memorable. Voice, sounds like George Harrison on a bad day or a British version of The Strokes.

Not bad, but not really my thing. Probably 3/5

Once again, thought it wasn't as good as band like the replacements or buzzcocks who this reminds me of, but it's also better than expected going off the fact I've never heard of them.

Never heard of this group or album before. I liked it. I especially like how the drums sound and guitar playing is pretty good too. The vocals are somewhat amateurish but that’s part of the appeal. Favorite songs were Another Girl, Another Planet, The Beast, and Language Problem.

could i write poetry to this? n

pretty meh for me

this is fine. nothing standout and nothing egregious

Can see where a lot of bands got some influence. Some Jawbreaker sounding songs!

Another 70s British rock album I did not need to hear before I died. How many of these are there gonna be on this list. Fine album though in all fairness but like.

The poppy punk on The Only Ones' self-titled and debut album is lovely. I wasn't anticipating an early new wave album to sound this good. Like, The Only Ones even mixed it up and incorporated some jazz! The lyrics are good--clever and interesting. Mostly it was a sixties vibe but with flourishes from the eighties, which made for such a good listen. But damn the vocals drone on too much. Still enough for a 3, though.

Quite solid, not one dimensional UK punk

Being 80s pop, I was hoping I would like this more, but I found it pretty forgettable.

Solid early punk influenced rock. Nothing that blows me away but it's fun and very listenable.

I'm not sure why I had to listen to this album before I died. I have now I can't imagine listening to it again. It's patchy, it's ok but it didn't connect with me

Another grower I think The tracks are pretty mellow overall. Kind of punky, but funky.

This was ok. Some interesting moments but not a band that I will be looking at again

A nice surprise. Feels like the missing link between punk and pop-punk. I was amazed to see that it’s a 1978 album, some bands from the mid-90s actually sound almost the same. Not a big fan of the singer’s voice, and some tracks are clearly far better than others. But the funky keyboards were a welcome (and surprising) addition to the punk vibe. A laudable effort.

Really good 70s Brirish garage rock.

New to me. I enjoyed it, but I won't seek them out from this listen.
