Reviews (page 10 of 13)
the one big Hendrix album we didn't have in the family growing up. (are you experienced and Axis bold as love were played often and enjoyed by all). Maybe it's because I have such a long relationship with his first two albums, but out of the three, this is my least favorite.
Wow, this is a long record. But I mean that in a good way. The two 15-minute songs were amazing.
Pretty epic vibe, I hadn't heard a lot of Hendrix. Very unique sound.
If only I could have given this a nine. Not quite a 10 cause of some filler, but I feel a 4 out of 5 (80%) is not quite accurate enough. 1983 is a personal favourite of mine when it comes to Jimi.
Nice and chill 60s vibes
Legendary
Very good album. I like crappy music so it didn’t completely resonate with me but I definitely appreciated a lot of it. Especially the first half of the album.
The album did get long and sprawly and it wasn't all pure gold but I can't deny the sheer skill and vision that Jimi had, and the whole band plays very well together. Cool to hear some classics in album context, like "Crosstown Traffic" and "All Along the Watchtower."
wowow
Not my fave Hendrix, honestly
Consistent quality, no terrible songs, a couple great
Geweldig album met absolute klassiekers erop
His second album I've heard and it's much more unique, better. I've also heard some of the songs like All Along th Watchtower.
got some absolute crackers on here but not my go to hendrix record
There's so much going on here but this is sonically amazing stuff to come from the late 60s.
Hendrix ist der geilste an der Rock-Gitarre. Ich finde nicht jeden Song auf dem Album total super. Aber egal, Hendrix.
Pretty good as a whole album. Makes the overplayed "classic rock" songs better
Great album. Some more experimental songs in the middle of the record. Good, not great. Finished with amazing songs. All along the watchtower and voodoo child. 4.5
Jimi is the man and I need to listen to more of his work. Ahead of his time.
GOAT on the guitar!
Slightly rough at the start, but picks up greatly after Voodoo Child
Perfect for a guitar mood. Driving, working, etc. Definitely a repeat listen. Warm, summer evening music. Fireworks at a festival music.
I know some will scream sacrilege at only 4 stars, and while I enjoy it, it's not my jam
Classic
Some bits sound a bit dated but overall, still astonishing.
In my collection, least favorite Jimi album despite some standout tracks.
Listened to It back in high school
Really great and sad it was his last album. Jimi and Mitch went off and you feel like you’re experiencing the experiments firsthand. Also the intro to voodoo child is still so fuckin cool
8/10
Too cool.
Loved it. Still original-but is it better than CCR?
One of the albums that is referenced by so many as an influence. It's long and self-indulgent at times. I listened while driving and found my mind wandering to other thoughts. That said, I recognise the impact of some of the songs
Some moments of majesty but docked a star for length
Brilliant in its ambition and has some stone cold classics. But a 3rd party producer might have reined-in the more self indulgent stuff, which kind of gets in the way. A reluctant 3*
Better than the other Hendrix album you made me listen to Actually really liked it. I still find it a bit boring in places but voodoo chile is massive Favourite track: Voodoo chile
It was fine, knew what I was expecting though
DNF. Listened in the car. Appreciate some of the songs, others were long and meandered.
As much respect as I have for Jimi, the long jams are still a bit much for me someone. To make matters worse, I've never agreed with the common wisdom that his version of "All Along the Watchtower" beats Dylan's original. On the bright side, on "Crosstown Traffic", he becomes the first person ever to make a kazoo sound cool!
Ordentlicher Rock mit psychedelischen Elementen aus den 60ern. Ist schon gut, aber für mich nicht eines der größten Alben. 3/5
Pretty boring tbh
A few classics and a pretty decent centerpiece track. It does seem to be the chillest of the Hendrix albums. It isn’t my favorite of his, but it is sad to think this was it- we never got to see where he’d lead us next.
Dla mnie, tego albumu, jest dobrych kilka kawałków. Całość kształtuje się ok.
A strong 3, not quite as good as are you experienced in my view
OK
crazy sounding album personally it was not enjoyable listen
I can appreciate the guitar playing prowess of Hendrix but great guitar work does not necessarily make great songs. You can get phenomenal singers, but if the songs they're singing are awful that's what matters. All along the watchtower is the standout track, mainly because Hendrix didn't write it. Crosstown traffic is great. I could take or leave the rest
Some groovy tracks but overly long
My question that I have after listening to this album: What is the song that appears the most on this list? I ask this question because of All Along the Watchtower, which is famously a better than the original cover. Watchtower has also been covered to death. One would assume that Dylan's version appears as well. The album is great but runs a bit long even if it is Jimi MF'n Hendrix. Crosstown Traffic, Both Voodoo songs, & All Along the Watchtower are the highlights. I find Little Miss Strange a nice pallette cleanser in the middle. Electric Ladyland has this weird soul psychedelic sound, its outta this world. Makes me sad that this is my last Hendrix album. 3.5
170. mmm
Solid 3.5! Fun album.
A good album you can’t deny but a bit bloated. Hard not to compare to Are You Experienced which is hit after hit. The hits on the album probably do carry it a bit. Crosstown Traffic, Voodoo Child etc. You could argue All Along The Watchtower is probably the best cover version of a song ever. Gypsy Eyes is a funky boogie banger!
Not as good as the other album we’ve heard. Who knew he was such a hulk hogan fan covering his song
Too much electric, not enough Ladyland
Good if I was in a different mood, much more about the music, not a lot of lyrics, It wouldn't be my go-to
I'm really a "greatest hits compilation" Hendrix kind of person.
For whatever reason I really preferred are you experienced to electric ladyland
no strong feelings about this one tbh I liked it enough
album zu lang. sonst ganz okay.
Theres only so much high pitched wah wah and studio effects I can take before I lose interest. I'd rather stop after just listening to the bangers.
At times it's the best, but it also feels a bit too long, and not everything resonates with me. I do think it's important and worth a listen (duh.) I just think I prefer other projects of his
It's Jimi, so there's no denying how iconic this album is. But it's just not for me. I LOVED Axis (gave it 5 stars), so I had really high hopes for this one, but i can be the outlier and say Ladyland is not as good. It felt really long, too.
The Good: We get to visit Ladyland! The Bad: No tom-foolery to be had there… The Ugly: Turns out an electric lady just isn’t the same thing… Okay, that was pathetic… not the album, just the above. I would argue that Jimi is the reason I started playing electric guitar. Hey Joe was my first song, Wind Cries Mary was my second… There’s a good chance that I purchased a wah-wah just so I could try to play the opening to Voodoo Child… This album is not one that I had ever listened to… at least, not that I recall. I know the last two tunes of this album all too well, as they undeniably some of the greatest guitar songs out there. Yet, like many other peeps have said in the comments, this album just kind is a hit and miss thing… Did I enjoy the listening experience? Sure, but I don’t have the desire to listen to the album again… and that is sad. So, I should rate this 3*, regardless of Jimi being a God!
One of the greatest pure guitar players of all time. The main knock I will give about this album is that it is somewhat bloated. A smaller track listing would have suited this album better.
Best songs are the last two. Not a bad album, but it wasn’t that enjoyable. He can absolutely play guitar.
now these guys like to jam - love it for them but it’s not my thing
I thought this was nice but not as good as the other one
Some most excellent guitar mastery…but rather a lot of the mastery was aired, perhaps at the expense of a coherent and listenable song. Great example of the genre but a little indulgent I felt. Also, the spelling of Voodoo Chile vs Voodoo Child has haunted me since I first came across the song…this album did nothing to clear up any confusion. Very powerful ending to the album though which earned it an extra star.
Great
начиналось довольно бодренько, но под конец задушился💔
favorita: rainy day, dream away
Not really my jam, sorry Jimi.
Pretty damn good. It had ebbs and flows but overall pretty damn good.
Kind of lost me in the middle but ended with an all-timer
Pretty solid. All Along the Watch Tower is a stand out. Funnily enough Dylan’s live performances echo this version so it’s like a cover of a cover. The rest of the album is fine but doesn’t compel me.
Some fab axe on here as expected. Banging finish but overly long and not my thing overall. Coming to the realisation that I’m a best of Hendrix kind of guy.
mucho talentoso porem nao muito minha vibe nota 3
Hm at first I didn't like it, but listening to it 13 hours later made me miss USA🤣 The type of music that’d play in the main character’s van during a road trip. Like it, it’s light, not noisy, positive, gives off sunset vibes. Not my style tho because I couldn’t like it at first, and I listened to only 3 the most popular songs. Somewhere about mid but since it’s very niche it goes a bit above mid
Impressed by the production for the time of release. There’s no denying of Jimi’s talent. Not exactly my cup of tea regarding song composition, but the influence on the evolution of rock is there.
6/10
Guitar
Bueno
Day 1: Listened to the whole thing while cooking chicken soup for my wife. This is my first Jimi Hendrix experience! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very jazzy and more experimental than I expected, I'm curious to listen to another Jimi Hendrix album and see how this compares. As an inexperienced music listener I felt that you could hear influences from artists before Hendrix and I can also hear how this would go onto influence other artists after Hendrix. I think part of a 5 star experience for me is the ability to put it on in most moods and listen front to back. This album has two 15 minute long songs and while I appreciate their integrity, I think I'd end up skipping them on some listens My favorite tracks were: Burning of the midnight Lamp (the intro is so good!) and House burning down Would easily listen to this again, especially while cooking. 3 and a half stars!
Before listening I have 13 songs liked by Jimi Hendrix on Spotify with 2 of those from this album - "Crosstown Traffic" and "All Along The Watchtower". So I'm curious to learn more about Jimi listening to this. I must admit I had an "uh oh" moment when I realized it was a double album. In my experience, double albums are usually stuffed with a lot of filler tracks. Voodoo Chile (long one) - seemed good Come on good times roll - yeah - good one Gypsy Eyes - interesting Rainy Day, Dream Away - pretty cool, best part is the instrumental jam Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - also good Most of the songs that I like, I like despite the singing and lyrics. I actually think they detract from the songs. I ended up liking 7 of the songs. If this was a single album and there were only 8 to 10 songs this would be a near perfect album. But as it is, there is a bunch of filler that didn't need to be on this album - and so instead of it getting a 4 - it will only get a 3/high 2. But - good news is I now have 5 "new to me" songs that I like. You're a great guitar player Jimi - I wish your albums were more consistently enjoyable to match your talent. Liked songs on Spotify: 7/16 Rating: 3/5
Good album
4/16 Other than All Along the Watchtower and Voodod Child, nothing else stands out. I liked "Are You Experienced?" better
too soft.
little miss stranger, come on, gypsy eyes, rainy day, dream away, house burning down
It’s as cool as it is boring
I'm a whore for los solos de guitarra largos.
Enjoy “Come On,” “VooDoo Child,” “All Along the Watch Tower,” and “House Burning Down.” Some of the songs were a bit long and felt it. (Jimi didn’t have the Isaac Hayes magic on this album).
over an hour of jimi doing what he was born to do. he’s kinda just in his own universe here. it’s great, it’s just so long, and doesn’t really work as a cohesive Album
Didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would, this went some cool places
I thought I would like this one more then I actually did. There is just too much going off on a sonic trek. I also think that the mix doesn't help it. The vocals for me were lost on some tracks.
well... jimi is such an icon. I must admit this is not his best work, and it still being good. I really enjoyed most of the songs, but I think i wouldn't replay the whole album, just my favorite ones. however, we love jimis music.
I even went to a carwash with the funky colored lights while listening. I like it but definitely long on jazzy noodling. Unquestionably rock god status, I just don't love the album as a whole. 3.8
I guess I jived more with this album than "Are You Experienced" because I enjoyed it more even though that one is more highly-rated. Still doesn't quite connect with me like it does with many other people but it was still pretty good, overall.
What was Little Miss Strange doing on here? Random 60s pop amongst the psychedelic and bluesy guitar riffs. Love the stereo affects for a 1968 album! Takes a couple of listens given the meandering nature of the album, but shows Hendrix guitar skills. All Along the Watchtower is a classic.
"All Along the Watchtower" y "Come On" son las buenas.
It’s a very, very free form jam at times. Makes for an interesting experience. When it kicks into gear it’s jaw dropping, but that’s more sporadic than you’d perhaps expect from an album that’s as revered as this. Musicianship is off the charts, but it just goes on too long tbh. Glad to have heard the hits in the context of the album, but don’t think I’ll be back again anytime soon. 3
I wish I liked this more. Great background music, but not something I'd listen to a ton. worth a try when I have time to really focus on the music though b/c... Hendrix
So good
Some good stuff, some that went on a bit
I like "Are You Experienced", but I've never listened to "Electric Ladyland" in its entirety before. The first few songs and the last couple of songs are great, but there are some weak songs in between as well. More song writing and less guitar playing would have done the trick. I do like the sound and production though. Around 3,5 stars.
Jimi is a seminal guitarist, but is the music any good? Bluesy psychedelic wig-out rock gets old after a while, even if there are some outstanding tracks thrown in
i can appreciate the diversity but defo not for me. im warming up to it more at let the good times roll/the one before "Singing" that is too speechy for a long times reallllyy pmo Fuck off there's a fourteen minute song. Although honestly i think it would enjoy the lore/the bit of a song being fourteen minutes if i wadnt pissed at it Overall it's fine... some stuff i didn't like but it balances with stuff i did like a decent amount. I hope I hate something or like something soon so i stop giving threes out
3/5 Interesting album but I generally felt lukewarm towards it, especially the songs that were more abstract & psychedelic - I appreciate the artistry but wouldn't choose to listen again. Just not my thing - would need some faster/heavier or more vocally interesting elements if I were really going to enoy it. Two songs are very long - "Voodoo Chile" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)". I enjoyed Voodoo Chile but felt that it didn't benefit from the length since it was pretty samey - its abridged version "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" is better. 1983 has some great moments when it picks up at the end but it's not worth the boring ass first 10 minutes lol. I preferred the covers, "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)" and "All Along the Watchtower", to Hendrix's original songs tbh... Favourite songs - Crosstown Traffic, Come On (Let the Good Times Roll) Voodoo Chile, Still Raining Still Dreaming
me gustó mucho la mezcla de sonidos, instrumentos, todo
When it was good it was good when it was not good it was not good
jimi is trippy
Burning the midnight lamp is the best record he was right... first listen.
Sometimes, genius needs guardrails. Or at least an editor. The first 2/3 of the album was difficult to listen to, almost as if Jimi was trying too hard to replicate "Are You Experienced?" while showing his depth as an artist. Anyway, the redemption of the last 3 tracks makes this album stand up as a classic and earns back one of the stars in my rating.
Ouvir esse álbum é tipo comer um tiramissu, você sabe que é um clássico elaborado. Mas falta algo para realmente te agradar
Rock muy de señor para mi gusto
I get the Hendrix hype but at the same time I know I’m not appreciating it like I should.
7/10
I understand that many people would overlook the flaws of this double album because of Hendrix's musical prowess. Besides the mostly forgettable lyrics, several tracks just serve the purpose of letting Jimi jam. I still can see the necessity of this album being on this list, but it isn't a 5.
Jimi Hendrix is one of those artists that I can take or leave but I enjoyed listening to this album. The songs of his that everyone knows are so played out so I enjoyed listening to lesser known songs. Still he probably won’t feature heavily in my listening rotation.
Not my favorite ever but the guitar is undeniable and I was impressed by the range of sounds he achieved.
Very talented guitarist. I can see the appeal
Ended strong. Some of the bluesy sounds in the middle of the album are not especially for me, but the guitar work is fabulous throughout.
Some good stuff buried within some self indulgent long stuff
Bit too indulgent and long for me. Some cool bits though. Would prefer a 40 minute cut that removes all the noodling.
Just a bit too long isn't it?
Was tough to listen to, mostly because I've been looping "All Along the Watchtower" for years and foolishly thought that the rest of the album is going to be more of the same. It really wasn't, and only a few songs toward the end came a bit close to it. Like the lyrics are great and you can tell that Jimi Hendrix is a very talented musician but I just couldn't get into this album. The two 14 minute songs were especially tedious to listen to and drag on for too long.
Fine
Had some classic Hendrix songs.
I did enjoy this album. It has that era defining sound that we all know, but as with the time I find the long instrumentals a bit much
I do really enjoy the bombast of Hendrix at his best, but this album, as with most of his work, is painfully inconsistent. Taken as a collective work, it's maxing out at ...
Despite having incredible highs like Slight Return and Crosstown Traffic, and Burning of the Midnight Lamp, this album is completely bloated with mediocre jam shit. I've owned this since high school and barely revisit it. The guitar between 0:30 and 1:00 on Slight Return is probably the pinnacle of rock guitar. It's haunted, loose, sexy, and badass. Even this can't save the album.
Skill and talent, but I thought most of the non-famous songs weren't that good.
3/5 - This was all over the place for me. Some incredible guitar jam segments, as expected, but I also got really bored with some sections. Best appreciated as a highlight reel, imo.
Rip Hendrix you would’ve loved solid state modeling amps
Obvious high points but not an album I would return to regularly.
6/10 ñe
Wth just happened on gypsy eyes His voice just melted into the guitar Saved: Come On Gypsy Eyes Still Raining, Still Dreaming
Some crackers but generally just a bit noodly and some of its bordering on dull. Whats woth the random song in the middle that sounds like a shitty beatles ? Are they any good ? No they suck !
Voodoo Child is absolutely timeless.
Jimi Hendrix has a nice voice and this album is more tolerable than I would expect it to be. About halfway through I got really sick of how similar all the songs sounded to me so I skipped ahead to All along the watchtower which is a banger that song belongs to him. Voodoo child slight return is actually good, Zack was right.
Obviously great guitar. But I’m not a stoner or a man so it’s not for me.
Beautiful, bluesy, meaningful.
I liked axis a little better. This is more typical Jimi Hendrix psychedelic wiggly squiggly guitar. But when you’re in the mood this hits the spot.
This is the second JH album I've had and, much like the previous one, I found it pretty decent but nothing special. Some really cool guitar work and funk, but a fair few forgettable tracks too. Clearly an unbelievable talent but I don't think his music is entirely my cup of tea.
A few great songs, but the double album was more than I needed. Favorite songs: Crosstown Traffic, Long Hot Summer Night, All Along The Watchtower, Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
jeg er så stolt over at jeg hørte gjennom hele voodoo chile. og litt sjokkert når jeg hørte publikum. høydepunkt: voodoo chile, little miss strange, long hot summer night, come on (let the good times roll)
Die Gitarrenskills sind natürlich überragend, aber für mich ist da zwischendurch auch sehr viel Leerlauf dabei. Die Highlights ziehen das Album auf schwache 3 Sterne hoch.
I can appreciate the great guitar but it wasn’t my thing really
A few of the classics are on here. Loses half a mark for a 13-minute track in the middle.
Jimi Hendrix is obviously legendary, I just can’t get into his music. I just can’t extract pleasure from his lowkey, discursive voice. It just doesn’t do it for me. 2 stars personally upgraded to 3 out of recognition for his greatness (and I can tell the music is very high quality).
I love Hendrix but I've never really liked this album. Messy and feels half-finished at times. Must have been GREAT drugs but too many tracks that are corny or a bit amateurish at times. The hits are of course great - and the Voodoo Chile Suite is an extremely underrated blues jam from his band. It was clear that he was moving on from simply being a rock front man here. Such a tragedy that his life was cut so short - apparently there might had been a Miles Davis collaboration if he lived on. Could you imagine??
Very groovy. I liked taking a trip with each song, but it’s a long album.
A little too long/indulgent (3.5)
Jammed up! Amazing guitar work, but would I listen to it again? Probably not, aside from the shorter tracks like Crosstown Traffic. It's just not my thing, unfortunately. Great cover art, though!
i quite liked some songs but do think it suffers from being too long
It was average. Sounded very 'samey'.
I can appreciate the exception skill in the album, and that it may well have been new and foundational once upon a time. There are some real bangers on this album, that I will add to playlists for sure. That being said, I would probably not listen to the entire album again, though.
saque muchas canciones buenas que voy a seguir escuchando
So much waffle
I do enjoy Jimmy Hendrix’ music but I like I do more-so enjoy the hits and less of the sit down full album experience. I think that goes for a lot of similar style guitar heavy rock with lots of riffs. I find it not being what I want to listen to straight through for an hour. That being said there are some fantastic songs near with obvious great guitar play that can’t be overlooked.
3.5
Very high highs, some sluggish blues rock jams. Some lyrics very very jarring
All along the watchtower makes it essential
Beautiful guitar
Too noodley
Pretty good.
There’s a song on this album where Hendrix sings about becoming a Merman
Holy moly, Jimi sure knows how to turn on the range selector on this Electric Ladyland album! You've got your fuzzy blues bangers, your trippy pop tunes, and everything in between. Still, 2 spins was enough for me to appreciate this classic for what it is: an inconsistent but undeniably influential trip through Hendrix's garage. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions - Crosstown Traffic - All Along The Watchtower - Voodoo Child
First track is creepy. Felt like I had entered a sci-fi movie. The rest was pretty nice, but listened to it while working so I didn't pay that much attention to it.
Some iconic tracks but a bit all over the place
Really enjoyed. Some of the later tracks get a little too psychedelic for me.
Intro was cool but nothing else really captured me
decent!
I love the narrative throughout this one, and how the guitar is almost has a voice? Favourite track: Rainy Day, Dream Away
прикольный альбик возможно правда не подошел к сегодняшнему вайбу 3,5/5 1.2.2026
I can only take so much noodling over blues chords, and I love jazz too. Great musicianship, infinite influence, but overall just kind of an okay listen.
Normally I would think a double lp where 2 tracks are extended jams that take up almost a half an hour could use some editing, but having so little Jimi studio work, I'll accept it. I know we had a copy of this in the house when I was growing up, but I spent way more time with Experienced and Smash Hits. Of course I know Cross Town Traffic, Watchtower, and Voodoo Chile, but I was way more into Gypsy Eyes and Midnight Lamp. And loved the Noel Redding Little Miss Strange.
Riktigt bra. kanske inte det som fastnar för mig mest
Crosstown Traffic, Voodoo Chile and Watchtower all feature on this collection Third album from Jimi hits hard, cementing his reputation as a force to be reckoned with!
3/5
jan 27th 2026 listening while cleaning the fridge, really good, i like Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland)
the songs that are really good are REALLY good but i still think the first album is better tbh
Just doesn't hit as hard for me like it does for others. Of course some songs are undeniable: Crosstown Traffic, Voodoo Chile, and All Along the Watchtower no matter how many times I've heard it. I can see why jam bands like to cover Merman. That thing goes on forever.
I liked a lot of the songs off this album. You get a lot of the Jimi Hendrix experience and the guitarist he was. There are some songs that are 10/10, but some others that feel like filler. Overall, I feel like this album isn't the most amazing maybe 3.25-3.75/10. I am going to give it a 3, because I think the album itself feels scattered versus being cohesive. I think I would give it a 3.5 if I could.
나쁘지 않다…… 하지만 엄청 좋은 건 아님 좋긴 하다
I love Jimi Hendrix. I was born on the same day as him, 27th of November, and I am also a guitar player. However, as much as I love Hendrix and the influence he had on me as a kid, this album is not my favourite. Don't get me wrong, All Along the Watchtower and Voodoo Child are classics and incredible songs, but this album as a whole is just not my favourite from him. Nevertheless, a good one, I will give it a 3 just because I only enjoy those songs more, not the whole thing.
On kovaa kitarasoundia morrrrjens!
Never been a big Jimi Hendrix listener but it's hard not to feel pulled inside these frantic riffs. Though the album is uneven, with some forgettable tracks, there's no denying that Hendrix was inhabited by a musical spirit, something great.
not as stellar as axis, but still a solid album. what a rockstar favorites: voodoo chile; come on
Cool and sexy man plays guitar. Second to last song famous
Enjoyed it during my pretentious youth, good album but not my thing
cool: the bluesy guitar solos also kind of cool: extremely stereo sound that moves around (when my one airpod died i thought it was just a stylistic choice though) not cool: the part where JH coughs/sniffs directly into my ears :(
Cool sounds and good voice. I think these would be fire live but the recording’s not doing them justice.
Cool music, not entirely my cup of tea
On the one hand, it's Jimmy. If this was a list of 1001 artists to listen to he's right up there. But this album? There's no escaping it's a disjointed mess. It feels like rehearsals and jam sessions picked up off a cutting room floor. There's some gold, but it's not a great album. It might not even be good. Go listen to Axis again then tell me what this does better or how it was more influential.
Somewhat disappointing as an album, definitely a case of a double LP suffering from an inability to edit. A handful of great songs - Crosstown Traffic Watchtower, Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). Unfortunately the rest don't hold up. The 14 min version of Voodoo Child is completely unnecessary, and several other tracks are just waffle. Compared to the mindbending sound on Are You Experienced, this was a bit of a letdown. Lets go with a 3.
люди пишут в отзывах про длинные песни и я, готовая к длинной песне как например богемская рапсодия, открываю "1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)", а она длится 13:42!
Standout Songs: Crosstown Traffic Little Miss Strange Come On (Let the Good Times Roll) 1983… (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) House Burning Down All Along The Watchtower
Not as good as Are You Experienced by a long shot, rather too much influenced by the Blues ramblings of Hendrix' contemporaries, sprinkled with some Psychedelics for good measure. 3/5
I can appreciate the artistry but it’s not much my thing. My favorite track was Little Miss Strange and I’m apparently I’m not supposed to like that one.
I didn’t realize this album was so long? It’s full of blistering, spectacular guitar work, but it’s also almost completely front-to-back blistering guitar work. It’s impressive and Hendrix was obviously a singular talent, but hearing this much pure shredding on record doesn’t do it for me. It’s a testament to his talent but probably not a record I’ll revisit in full again. The band-forward tracks were closer to the mark for me (“Little Miss Strange”, the eternal cover of “All Along the Watchtower”).
Had to listen to this album twice to understand what I think about it. I think it starts a bit mid but the ending is fantastic. Overall, I can recognize it's relevance, but I am not sure if it moves personally me
Overall rating by me: 6/10 Songs added to the playlist: ,,Crosstown Traffic”, ,,All Along the Watchtower” Notes: Nice sound and a cool vibe but it lacks something special, that wow factor - at least for me. Finally though I had the opportunity to get to know JH’s music so that’s definitely a plus.
Liked it. Didn't love it.
Do dosłuchania w całości, ale było fajnie, tylko bardzo w tle
The pacing of this album feels off. I was pretty bored halfway through this and wished it was over. I don't know, I think I might not be the person for 10+ minutes blues guitar solo jamming. All the way at the end of the record are my favourite songs, but I don't want to wait one hour before I can listen to them. So yeah, a lot of the album felt too long and slow for me, but the greatness of All Along the Watchtower and Voodoo Child (Slight Return) are undeniable.
Pretty brilliant end to the album- Voodoo child was definitely my favourite out of all of the songs for sure. I really wanted to give this a 4 but I think I much preferred the other album and I really didn't like some of the longer songs on here, so it's a high 3.
I really loved the guitar. To the extent that on some songs the vocals felt almost unnecessary. Unfortunately some of the songs blurred together and didn't do much for me hence the 3
I really wanted to like this but I thought it was just OK. Personally, I don't really know a lot about guitar so maybe this makes me unable to truly appreciate this album but I just didn't find any song to be standout and now thinking back I can't remember any particular song from the last hour and a bit of continual noise.
This is great what?!?! I’ve listened to his songs stand alone but never a whole album and I’m honestly shaken (in a good way). The incredible medley and atmosphere of sound that he creates is insane and the balance of rock with jazz, rock and roll, soul and blues is crazy and then random calms with songs like ‘moon turn the tides gently gently away’. I don’t think I’d listen to it on a daily basis because sometimes it’s such a wall of sound you can’t get past it - but I can appreciate how beautifully crafted this album is and it’s a strong 3.5 but rounded down not up.
I know and love Jimi Hendrix to large extents, and so I had high hopes when listening to this album because I know how much of a mastermind he is as a guitarist and musician. However, I found countless tracks let down my expectations in a exhaustingly boring manner. I liked his improvisation with the pentatonic scale for 'come on (let the good times roll)' as well as the obvious 'All along the watch tower' and 'Vodoo child'. However, these saving graces weren't enough to rescue the unexciting and unrelieved rest of the album. A very disappointed 3.
the guitar speaks
3/5
cool guitar but lowkey exhausting 🙁
Psych jam band type album with some bangers at the end
pretty good but not my exact vibe
Really fun, loved Voodoo Chile
Would like to be high next time I listen. A classic. Glad to remind myself of Mr. Jimi.
Listened while i was cleaning got me abit angsty
I vibed even tho not what I usually listen to
Mostly enjoyed it - album is a bit long though - really enjoyed last 2 tracks - all along the watchtower and voodoo child - maybe because I’m more familiar with those tracks. Did enjoy the bluesy vibe of come on let the good times roll.
Good album, great guitar as expected. Some long songs but I’m not complaining. Preferred the second half and my personal favourite was probably still raining, still dreaming. Every song has a cool intro especially house burning down.
3.5
Feels blasphemous giving this a 3 but it was just bluesy guitar noodling with loosely written songs for most of the album then two insanely good songs.
No one’s gonna argue that Jimi Hendrix’s guitar solos are anything short of extraordinary, or that he isn’t one of the most influential rock artists of all time. But this album seemed to go on forever (which it shouldn’t, because it’s only 75 minutes long), and I’m not sure if I really like this psychedelic rock genre. That said, this was one of the rare consistent albums; all of the songs were around a 3 out of 5. A pretty easy 3 stars; Jimi Hendrix is a great guitarist, but not as great of a musician.
It’s not bad
Decent album, amazing instrumentals but some of the songs are looong
There's several tracks on here that I love, but I much prefer other versions of than this album. The quality is muddy and buzzy and it's not as fun as it used to be.
Obviously a genius
This came up in my history list and I misread the title, and thought "Oh cool - The Butthole Surfers!" then saw Jimi Hendrix and was confused for a second... only in that moment did I realise that Electric Larryland is a joke.
im giving it a 3 for now but i think ill be back
groovy
(A merman i should turn to be); house burning down; all along the watchtower; crosstown traffic; have you ever been (to electric ladyland)
si lo hubiera escuchado todo y con más atención, tal vez la puntuación subiría
Never been hugely into Hendrix. I think it’s largely because of my aversion to electric blues in general. I do enjoy the more soul & rock tracks on this record though with a few exceptions.
Not really into instrumental music but it way nice
i'm not gonna lie i mainly listened to this in the background while i was doing work. it was pretty good! i enjoyed it better than the last one and i found a cool song out of it.
It was decent. Some wierd stuff and blues
Give me Axis or Experienced any day of the week over this.
moltíssim més divertit, alguna cançoneta massa llarga, que vols dir 13 min????!!!!
Guitar master.
Никогда не мог въехать в этот альбом - все время ассоциация с каким-то бардаком.
As much as I enjoyed specific parts of this album, it’s isn’t exactly something I can appreciate to the fullest :(
6/10, some fun listens but not one to overly revisit
too long honestly i got bored but thats me and my taste in music. some catchy melodies but i just spaced out
not really my vibe alas
“Still Raining, Still Dreaming” the guitar speaks. “House Burning Down,” too. “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” stood out as well. I feel like the beginning was pretty rockin’ and after dipping it went on a Merman trip to the bottom of the sea and came back funky. No wonder Mick had a poster of this fella up on his wall. I LOVE “Crosstown Traffic.”
Guitar is top notch, love Gypsy eyes and merman Everything lowkey a little to long for me but love the drums and guitar in previously mentioned two songs
This is not the Jimi I love
*1968. *Still totally unique and fresh - nothing else sounds like this. *Not super my cup of tea (feels like you’d need to be pretty high to fully get it…) but even I can appreciate this sound. RATING - 7/10
This is a good album, it’s just too long for my taste. Great ending though
Najveći koji je ikad uzeo gitaru u ruke. Ali da se čuje ta gitara mora se dobro napatiti s ovakvim albumom. Iscijedio mi je dušu.
Bad
Another enjoyable album. Actually really liked the longer proggier songs, especially the long version of Voodoo Child. Song great songs, and once again fantastic musicianship. Jim Hendrix can really make a guitar sing.
I love Jimi, but this is definitely his "best-selling author refuses to have an editor anymore after two huge hits and you can really really tell" album. Couple of great tracks but not enough for a double album.
Dobrý vibe.
Jimi was an amazing guitarist, there's no doubt there. However, there's only so much noodling around on a guitar I can take before I need to listen to something else, and the 13 minutes of 1983...(A Merman I Should Turn to Be) went way past my ability to pay attention. Thankfully the album wrapped up with a couple of of Jimi's best songs (one a cover) which saved the album for me.
It's amazing the two most famous songs from this album are the last two. I felt like this album was too cool for me, and it was a little hard for me to get into, but it's definitely the case that Watchtower and Voodoo are bangers.
This album has some great songs like along the watchtower, voodoo child and crosstown traffic but i’m not a fan of the production. Yes Hendrix thrives through his distorted guitars but it feels like that distortion is applied wider across the album as a whole and that just detracts from the songs. Tracks like …And the gods made love and Moon turns the tides …. Irritated me slightly. I know it goes very much against the Hendrix vibe but the whole thing could have just been a bit tighter.
Listening to parts of this album made me, for the first time, realise you wouldn’t have your Eric Claptons or your Joe Bonamassas - any of the great blues guitar players - were it not for Jimi Hendrix. I’ve always known that was the case but, listening to this in its entirety, it is clear that Hendrix was magic with blues. If it were a solely blues album, it would score a bit higher from me. Alas. This felt a bit chaotic in places, jumping from genre to genre so much it gave me whiplash, especially in the first half of the album. It did not need two versions of Voodoo Chile - and certainly not when one of them lasted for 14 minutes without the punch of Slight Return. However, when this album gets it right it’s so right: “Crosstown Traffic” is a sharp, handful of minutes of almost pop sounding music, in places; closing with that version of “Voodoo Chile” shows a song doesn’t need to be that long to make its point. The standout for me though is “All Along the Watchtower”; in my opinion, Jimi’s version is the best ever committed to tape. Yes, better than the original, and I will die on that hill.
Crosstown Traffic is a bonafide classic. As is Voodoo Child. As is his version of All Along The Watchtower. I am on record as being unmoved by long periods of guitar noodling... But Hendrix's guitar noodling is just better. Funky and soulful and just perfect for the track it's on. And I find it so interesting he was critical of his own singing voice, because it's perfect for these songs. However, as a record this is too long to sustain my interest over the full album, and for every great song, there's a forgettable one, meaning this can't get more than: 3/5
Carino, ci sta
a bunch of "meh" filled in with a couple standout tracks and cool guitar solos. You can hear how good it could be, but it also seems a little underdeveloped. It was honestly...not that interesting, outside of some of the guitar solos.
Not my jam, but great instrumentals.
Good album. Jimi is fantastic when he’s fantastic and then there’s the other stuff
A lot of talent indeed, but I found the album was really boring the longer it went on. A lot of sparse instrumentation and repetitive motifs.
Too much guitar noodling.
Good is great but some of this is too meandering and jazzy at times.
3 1/2 Stars: Generator needs some tweaking. In 2 weeks, I've received 2 Hendrix albums as an assignment out of a 1,001 options! At this point I should be good on good ol' Jimi for a while. Regardless Electric Ladyland is just as good as Hendrix has ever done, although the album was a little bit of a slog to get through. Some editing needed. But it also contains what are undeniably his greatest songs with All Along the Watchtower and Voodoo Child (Slight Return). A bit of a mixed bag overall.
Some solid songs but a little long. I feel like he has some better music.
he's a great guitarist but it gets lost in the rambling, way too long of an album.
Quite frankly, it was tiring.
The master of psychedelic rock strums the guitar in a singular way. It’s weird, it’s 60’s, it’s enjoyable (if you can get that far back in time.) Crosstown Traffic and Watchtower got some play on the radio. If you just try to digest the song titles it will boggle your mind. There had to be a little drug use goin’ on during this session - Jimi token on vinyl in ‘68. ((3.2*s) Two riders were approaching…
I did not care for this album as much my earlier Hendrix Experience provided by the list. I didn't like the more bluesy approach on some of it. Apart from the hit songs, most of this one dragged on. I liked the Rainy Day, Dream tracks (it was raining outside at the time) but that Merman song killed the mood. I'm putting this record at a mid 2.5 stars for Jimi's guitar work and known tracks.
I'm a pretty big Jimi Hendrix fan but Electric Ladyland has always been a little difficult to defend for me. I love Are You Experienced? and really enjoy Axis: Bold as Love but Electric Ladyland doesn't pack the same punch. I get that Jimi was experimenting and trying to showcase a handful of styles/genres but the overall collection and 73 minute playtime is a little lackluster when compared to his other work. This is another example where the album would have been stronger had it been cut in half. There's a lot of filler on sides B and C that I think should have been left on the cutting room floor. I typically enjoy a long jam, especially when Jimi can just do this thing, but there was no need for 2 on this album. Despite its flaws there is still some quality Hendrix and company on this album. It opens with a couple solid songs and gives you the 14 minute Voodoo Chile to showcase some signature blues rock from the Experience. If you tune out for B and C you get a hell of a finish with Watchtower and Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). Overall it's an OK album, but I tend to go elsewhere for my Jimi Hendrix fix. As a footnote, considering how recognized Jimi is for his guitar playing, I'm amazed he isn't regularly listed as a great vocalist. Something about his voice packs a huge punch and a ton of style whether he's noodling about magic castles or musing about civil rights and war issues. RIP Jimi. 2.75 stars
I like a few of the tracks, it's pretty experimental is places, but it goes a bit far for me sometimes There is a bunch of long jam bits where I lose interest. I love his playing and I like his voice and delivery. I think there is enough here for a solid album, but this double album just dragged to me.
Enjoyed but got a bit repetitive
It was ok, but nothing special.
...And the Gods Made Love is psychedelic. curious how they did this. half speed tape machine + flanger? this record is pretty rough around the edges sonically, more so than I recall his earlier stuff. organ playing on Voodoo Chile is so great. ending is nuts. Little Miss Strange, not sure if I've heard Jimi play acoustic much other than that one video of him playing 12 string. This is coming off more like an early Beatles cut. Not stoked on it. Some crazy mixing going on on this record. The guitar solo on Come On is SO LOUD and abrasive Rainy Day, Dream Away is strange This album as a whole feels pretty disjointed. It's messy. Sometimes in a cool way, other times not. 1983 - cool descending progression/melody, interesting modulated delays/phaser stuff going on, guitarmonies, trippy panning drums, cool reverse middle section w/guitar solo. this is now my speed House Burning Down - not really my thing Production on All Along the Watchtower is crazy, everything is so blown out Voodoo Child Slight Return is a classic, no doubt. Iconic guitar sound. My feelings on this record are very mixed. Standout was 1983 for me, I do love a sprawling epic. The psychedelia always appeals to me, but the songwriting felt very haphazard and not particularly memorable.
It was ok, a bit of a messy sound compared to other stuff I've heard from him.
A tad long and lacking cohesion. An odyssey nonetheless. 3.5/5
Hendrix at his best, and worst! "Crosstown Traffic", "Long Hot Summer Night" "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", and particularly "All Along the Watchtower" are brilliant. "Gypsy Eyes" just misses. But the rest........
Good but not great … i preferred the Electric Landlady album (RIP Kirsty)❤️
Another classic. I liked it well enough and appreciate its inclusion in the book.
Always liked a bit of Jimi, from a different era of drugs, women and Epstein islands.
Know a few of these. The man knows his way around a guitar, but it's all a bit groovy for my tastes.
Listening to a Hendrix album is like sitting in on your partner's band practice. You're really proud & impressed and it's all very clever but then you realise that it's been going on for quite some time now and you secretly wish they'd play Hey Jude. 6 / 10 Best track/s: All Along The Watchtower obvs, 1983
Not a big Hendrix fan, but recognize the talent and importance.
With the exception of the hits, the cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" and "And the Gods Made Love", this album is fairly boring for anyone that is not a guitar player or guitar aficionado. "1983 (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)" began interesting but overstayed its welcome. Who has the urge to create a playlist that puts all of the years in order? Maybe this song, David Bowie's "1984", and "Paul McCartney's "1985"? I enjoyed the hits and "Crosstown Traffic". I think this album's relevance has more to do with the production techniques used during recording that would inspire other artists who would refine those techniques into things that were actually structured and interesting.. Hendrix also codified the stereotype of a studio diva and foreshadowed the kind of assholery it would inspire. 30 to 40 minutes of this album could and should have been cut to tighten this album up. Jimi's is certainly a guitar playing virtuoso, but for folks like me I am not particularly thrilled to listen to guitar masturbation exercises that go on endlessly. I prefer to hit it and quit while we are still ahead. Personally, I think he is a bit overrated, but this album is certainly a historical document.
Trodde Jimi skulle være bedre. Opplevdes som litt kjedelig
Still can’t my head around Jimi. I keep waiting for a chorus and even the semblance of a proper song but they never come. This made more sense than his earlier stuff.
Not Jimi’s best, rambles around a bit.
Classic rock is okay, not my vibe. Very experimental for it's time I feel.
