Reviews (page 4 of 13)
unexpectedly really liked most of this melancholy, sad album. maybe it’s the current state I’m in that craves this sort of connection to common human experience that’s embedded in the lyrics, albeit from a mans perspective. some songs bled together but lost case and guess I’m doing fine stand out, which are the exact words I’ve been jumping between to describe this time in my life
As a Beck fan in the 90’s, I groaned when I saw an album of his pop up on this list. I was pleasantly surprised how great this album is! He has always been a talented songwriter. It’s his sampling and weirdness that made me move on from being a fan of his. Those things are absent here. This is Beck unplugged and vulnerable. I really dig it.
Przyjemny. Muzyczka do chillowania w łóżeczku w spokojny dzień.
Happened to listen to Odelay and this over the last few days. It’s crazy how different they are. I like Odelay better, but there are some really solid, although somber, songs on Sea Change.
I’ve listened to this album a few times since its release, and Beck did a really solid job shifting into a more serious, introspective style. You can clearly hear the heartbreak all over it. “Lost Cause” is easily the standout, but as a whole the album is a heavy drag if you’re not already in a depressed mood. Well made, but definitely a downer.
Overall a pretty chill album of which I never grew bored. I like Beck's work.
Matched my mood great
Veldig fin!
Sonoridade muito bonita.
This has some interesting songs and soundscapes on it. I particularly liked "Bloodsport" and "The Wake". That said, overall I wasn't blown away by it, and there were a number of tracks that didn't do much for me. 3/5
I tend to really like Beck when he's featured on other people's songs. I haven't really listened to much of his own music. Based on the other reviews, I'm not sure this is a good starting point. Regardless, I really enjoyed the album. There are such pretty, lush strings on a few songs!
favorites: track two: paper tiger, track three: guess I’m doing fine, track eight: around the bend
Sad Beck. Really enjoyed
Slower more chill Beck album.
Bruhhhh
pos esta chistoso nomas
His eighth album. Rock / Folk. This isn't the cartoonish, random, witty, in your face Beck. This is melancholy, thoughtful, dour Beck showing us life can punch anyone in the mouth at times. The production on this is crystal clear. I like the use of strings when they show up and Beck's vocals are on point. A surprise from Beck for me and I liked it. All in all, very good.
Soft beck
I didn't expect to like this album as much as I do! I'm not too familiar with Beck, but I found this album reminded me of some of my favourite artists like Djo and The Flaming Lips
4/5
A much slower and more subdued Beck than I’m used to. It sounds and feels like he’s struggling under the weight of his relationship loss. I tend to prefer the more sample heavy, cryptic, chaotic Beck, but this is still a great album.
love
Loved the strings
The Golden Age - 5/5 Paper Tiger - 4/5 Guess I'm Doing Fine - 3/5 Lonesome Tears - 4/5 Lost Cause - 5/5 End of the Day - 4/5 It's All in Your Mind - 3/5 Round the Bend - 4/5 Already Dead - 4/5 Sunday Sun - 3/5 Little One - 4/5 Side of the Road - 3/5 Average score: 3.8/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ well, this is much sadder than Odelay i think this is very well-produced (as most of his music is). i was certain going into this that i wouldn't like this very much in comparison to his more upbeat albums, and in some ways i was right. however, i can confidently say i liked this more than i thought i would! in fact, i enjoyed this album more than i did Guero (which i heard earlier last year from this list)
7/10 Favorite: Lonesome Tears
Good Chris Cornell/nick cave impression. It’s not my think but the musicianship is undeniable. 3 is too low for something as well put together as this. I love the arrangements on this thing I want to study them.
It is an album that was played very often when it first came out and I have not listened to it for a while. It was refreshing and nostalgic to listen to. A really good album with a plethora of standout tracks. Melancholic and almost soulful. Sunday Sun was the standout track. 4 stars
The Golden Age - 4/5 Paper Tiger - 4/5 Guess I'm Doing Fine - 4.5/5 Lonesome Tears - 4.5/5 Lost Cause - 4.5/5 End of the Day - 3.5/5 It's All in Your Mind - 3.5/5 Round the Bend - 3.5/5 Already Dead - 3.5/5 Sunday Sun - 4/5 Little One - 4/5 Side of the Road - 3.5/5 A very melancholic album fitting for a breakup. I doubt that I'll come back to this album given how somber the mood was, but it was still a good listen nonetheless. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Guess I'm Doing Fine, Lonesome Tears, Lost Cause
Mellow
I just dont like christmas
BECK EN PLAN TRANQUILO CON UNA GRAN PRODUCCIÓN.
Very different from what I was expecting from Beck. The live instrumentation gives the album a more traditional singer songwriter sound very fitting with the album’s depressed, reflective mood. Beck does sad boy very well, but not the best.
I’d never heard of Beck (other than the Scandi crime series) but I rather liked this album.
I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did, if you can "enjoy" an album about a devastating breakup. I'm generally fine with the hits when it comes to Beck (except for "Loser," which has annoyed me for 31 years and counting), and I only knew Sea Change by reputation. Twenty-plus years later, I probably take for granted what a stark departure it was, because this sound suits him well. I saved a bunch of songs from this for my "quietish" playlist, which counts as an endorsement.
7.5/10
This was boring boy music but I get it
Great album
I already knew the artist end a couple of songs of this album, I really liked the whole album it was a good experience.
Different style for Beck, but good
Paper Tiger <3
I really liked this album - the music was amazing - the instruments and everything. The lyrics were also really meaningful. I will definitely listen more. It was not what I was expecting as I knew the song loser by beck - the style was so different!
A wonderful mix between Radiohead and Neil Young, with ghostly vocals throughout. 4/5
I really liked it!! Super beautiful and it features Roger manning and Jason Falkner! Also produced by Nigel Godrich which makes sense. I’ve always just really loved beck’s voice
Nice and smooth. Cool to listen to
Not the Beck I'm familiar with, but I enjoyed it. Looks like "boring" is a theme in the reviews... not my experience.
One of the most touching breakup albums in my opinion. A lot of these songs have, at one point, really described the way I was feeling during times like those. This kind of relatability can only be praised in my eyes. And the melodies are great, too. Something like "Round the Bend" sounds straight out of Nick Drake's first two albums. The production by Nigel Godrich gives these tracks a dream-y psychedelic feel, with all the little effects that are so characteristic of him, and the string arrangements by Beck's dad, David Campbell, never fail to make my eyes well up. Amazing. Key tracks: Lonesome Tears Lost Cause Round the Bend Sunday Sun Little One
Love Beck, might be his best, excited to cry today. Edit: Yeah it was great!
An amazing piece of work from Beck. Less upbeat and dancey than most of Becks albums…this is a “going through it” record. And he takes you along with him. A focus on lyrics and song writing, really shows some deeper talent. Guess I’m Doing Fine and Lost Cause are stand alone tracks for me. Sad sounding at their surface, but very healing when you listen deeper.
4/5
Lovely and calm
Solid album, but if you’re looking for sad & melancholic Beck, Morning Phase is better than this one.
A beautiful album and an example of an artist stretching their wings in maturity. One of a pair of albums, weirdly I have spent more time with 'Morning Phase' so this was relatively fresh and had the same quality. This is an ode to the country songwriters that he grew up with. Confidence and space shine through these tunes, with a killer band and some beautiful melodies.
Very fun calm music, some tracks felt samey but overall it felt ethereal and fun to listen to
Happy to get an album I've never listened to before! Immediately added Golden Age to my stargazing playlist. Already Dead has some really good plucking and was just such a good song. Overall, a really good album, I definitely will be listening to more Beck in the future.
Forgot how long this is. Winner.
Enjoyed the instrumental on this one. Sort of a sad tone on the vocals but for the vibe.
Just another Beck album that shows his versatility and willingness to change his sound.
Quite OK but not my jam. P.S. Another one that became better with familiarity.
If you only know Beck from Loser or Where It's At this one might surprise you. It's a melancholy affair without the diversity of his previous records. It's Beck's 'Blood On the Tracks' breakup record. The mopiness of it kinda wears thin after awhile, but overall it's a solid record. 4/5
Stringy emotive indie-if-it-weren't-indie music, never slows down *too* much or leaves a particularly dull moment, mostly just stays at a gentle undemanding pace Comfortable listening experience with lots of pleasant musical sweetness
It wasn't exactly what I expected.I will come back to it because it is an interesting album , but surprising coming from the man who wrote Loser. This is a folk album combines beautiful melodies with soft instrumentals. I will try to come back and update my reviews.Once I have had a chance to listen more carefully to the lyrics.
Two things I don’t much care for are Overproduced Introspective Singer-Songwriter Songs, and Beck. Remarkable that this is both of those things, and held up. One of my favourite examples of OISSS comes from Beck. One of my favourite examples of Beck is him doing OISSS. Music is so stupid.
I really liked this, actually. Can’t believe I’ve never listened to it before.
Actually really enjoyed this. Very mellow in that Beck sort of way.
v good
This album really grew on me.
Pleasant listen. A little depressed album, but very beautiful. Is not only about acustics, this have different sounds in it that complements the acoustics ones. Very good to enjoy the melancholic feeling.
It’s a good album. Not great though. Wondering what other Beck albums are included in the list.
Pretty morose, but I enjoyed it for the most. Some songs brought to mind Nick Drake, which alone is enough to push this to four stars.
Great album that I actually own. It's a little more laid back compared to his other work. I think the lyrics and music are excellent and are great to listen to when I'm working. It's not too distracting but very pleasant to listen to. Several hit songs that people may have heard through pop culture but the other songs are really good too. It's a great album to listen to from beginning to end.
primo sad boi music
I had a copy of this album, I don’t remember why or how I came about it but I remember clearly having the CD in a case in my car. I have definitely listened before but it’s been a long time and not one I know well. I guess it never really landed that well, maybe I never quite was in the right headspace, or perhaps because the Beck I liked, was the one that mixed in samples and sang eccentric lyrics. Here Beck delivers a much more mellow and emotionally charged album, yet it’s very authentic, the songs sound lush and despite being sad and melancholic, it remains engaging, particularly from an instrumentation perspective. It would be easy to label this just another breakup album but it’s far more than that, and being Beck, it’s all the more interesting that it’s a departure from his usual style, one that makes you sit up and take note.
This was enjoyable. Understandably mellow throughout, considering its subject matter of heartache and loss. Lost Cause is still probably my favorite track, but the whole album is easy to listen to.
I forgot to rate at the time but I remember enjoying it
Oddly poignant and soulful album by Beck. Fantastic
My first favorite Beck album, reminds you of what heartbreak really feels like.
Such a great rainy day album. I queue this up with Portishead and sulk all day.
Sea Change is a beautiful album. Beautiful composition on every song, without feeling overly produced. On my first listen, did not hear a single skip here. After several listens, I feel even more strongly about that initial impression. My favorite listen was chilling with an intent listen with my HIFi setup. Given his accolades and importance in the industry, I don't know why Beck flew under my radar, but this album left me and my partner wanting to explore more. This why I'm here. Discovering new music that I want to explore more.
I've had a passing familiarity with this album. However most that I know of this album has been "filtered" through The Flaming Lips. In 2002 The Flaming Lips opened for Beck as well as being his backing band for this album's tour. (I was WAY into the Lips in 02) With this your collaboration came the promotions as well. So I've listened to a Beck-Lips radio performance of Sea Change (which also contains Beck covering Do You Realize?) from KCRW far more than the proper album. So when this album came up it gave me an opportunity to hear it with fresh ears. I think consuming this album the way I did, with radio performances and the live setting which I saw that tour, skewed my perception of the material. When I only heard the KCRW show I was hearing two groups enthusiastic about the music and upcoming shows. When I saw the groups live, it was a concert setting so it was fun and upbeat. So I think I was mislead, or probably mislead myself, into a sunnier opinion about Sea Change. This was a fresh listen so I finally got how quiet and melancholy it is. I was really unaware of the background (written after a breakup apparently) so that added to the vibe as well. This wasn't the "pop" Beck of Odelay or Midnight Vultures. This was "sad" Beck. It felt like more polished folk-pop. Like a Laurel Canyon songwriter. It's actually quite lovely. It's a vibe album as much as anything; an album for introspection on a quiet afternoon. I should mention (because I'm into these things) that the personnel is incredibly impressive too. (Roger Joseph Manning Jr and Jason Faulkner of Jellyfish and Smokey Hormel always get my attention. Dudes are awesome)
Absolutely beautiful album. This is gorgeous stuff.
Love this. Maybe his finest work.
Sea change is becks best album. Very chill but also somber and saddening at times.
love to be a little sad
Infinitely better than the last two Beck albums I was forced to endure here. I don't even remember their names they were so bland and inconsequential, but I do recall one of them being unbearable. Anyways, this was quite an enjoyable listen. I think the latter half of this thing really does detract from the first half. A lot of the songs towards the end feel like filler and lack a lot of substance. I just think Beck's melancholy and numbed style doesn't gel with me. I like sad music but Beck sounds more like he's bored than anything while he's making music. Still, if I had to pick a Beck album to listen to for the rest of my life - it'd be this one. I'd give this a 3.5 if I could but I cannot, so I'll bump it up to 4 for a significant improvement to the other Beck slop I had to endure and the fact I enjoyed a majority of this listen.
Absolutely not to my taste whatsoever. I will never enjoy music that is both slow and sad. Unfortunately I have to admit this is some of Beck's most well performed output of the three albums we've gotten so far.
I think this guy should experience more heartache and terrorist attacks. Seriously, his other albums have been pretty awful. Instead of slogging through one sitting like I did with other albums, I listened to this multiple times end to end. The production is great, the mood is well-crafted and it is thoroughly listenable. I am not the biggest fan of the vocals, which is the worst thing I can say about this album. A very pleasant surprise. Highlights: Lonesome Tears
Sea Change is one of those albums that feels like it’s happening in slow motion, where every note lands with weight and purpose. It’s Beck stripped of all the irony and cleverness that defined his earlier work, replaced by something raw and weary but beautifully honest. The production is gorgeous — warm, cinematic, and full of space — the kind of record that sounds best when you’re alone and the world feels a bit too heavy. The orchestration from Nigel Godrich gives it that haunting Radiohead-era lushness, but Beck’s voice is what carries the emotion. Tracks like “The Golden Age” and “Guess I’m Doing Fine” hit with quiet devastation, while “Paper Tiger” swirls in strings and melancholy like a dream you don’t want to wake from. It’s heartbreak without melodrama, introspection without self-pity. What makes Sea Change so lasting is how it sits somewhere between sadness and peace. It’s the sound of someone fully accepting loss but still finding beauty in the ashes. Even after all these years, it feels timeless — not just because of how it’s made, but because of how true it feels.
Certainly sets a mood
I own this on cd and really enjoyed it when it came out. I haven't listened to it again in years and was a pretty solid 4 star album I think
Beautiful album but I prefer morning phase similar vibe
Not what I associated with Beck. Feels heavily Nick Drake influenced, nice album.
A hidden gem of an album
woohoo more Beck!
Enjoyable.
3.9/5 Now this is a nice change of pace... and quality! After RH got tortured for over 2 weeks with some of the most atrocious takes on music my ears had ever witnessed, we finally got a good album. Although I've obv. heard a couple songs from Beck, I've never listened to this album before. It's marked as Folk, but it's really not that. It's melancholic Alternative/Space Rock with a symphonic twist. Actually pretty likeable. What sticks out is that it carries a certain flow that forces you to slow down and chill, similar to works of Pink Floyd. Gotta say, I liked most of it. Many of the songs won't land in my fav list, but there's some gold in here, Lonesome Tears for example.
Relatively mellow Beck album. A good listen.
Beck's best album by a mile.
Very melodic, pleasing to listen to, and very well produced. Need to listen again
I'll admit I've been pretending to have listened to more Beck than I'd like to be perceived to have. This was great, really intimate feeling.
This is one where helps to be in the mood for, but it is truly fantastic if you're in that space. I'm generally not this level of sad and depressed, but I still really appreciate it.
From Country tinged Americana Golden Age, moving to more orchestral strings in Paper Tiger. Melancholic. Seems to be a bit of a break up theme. I thought Album was new to me, Odelay- was the album I had. This is different to that. But Lost Cause, It’s All in your Mind and Sunday Sun all seemed familiar - singles maybe? Eels like songs End of the Day and Little One were good. Round the Bend - first one where the sadness began to grate slightly or maybe just a weaker song. Given a 4 as it’s the best I’ve reviewed but 3.5 would be more accurate. Will listen again.
Thank you Beck for bringing a little interest / new discovery into this project.....the first half of the album sounds gorgeous, i love the acoustic guitars, lush strings and downer lyrics. First 6 songs will going onto my playlist. Was considering a 5 at that point, unfortunately the quality dips a little towards the end
Good stuff. Note to self to listen to more Beck albums.
Beck is a considerably underrated composer. His melodies, progressions, and production levels sound fresh now, 23 years after the original release of this album. While some of his other music can have more energy to them, this album stands for cover-to-cover listening for those wanting a lower-key, calmer, but still musically very interesting indie rock exploration.
Actually enjoyed it. Meditative, delicate, acoustic album. Funny to hear Beck like a more grounded artist, rather than living off the hype of Loser.
The only song of Beck’s I knew this was The Loser. Here, I’m pleasantly surprised. The songs are slow and thoughtful. Sang beautifully by Beck, and containing more than a handful of cathartic emotional releases. A very enjoyable, and easy, listen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I've given this a few listens and I feel like there's an incredible album here that just hasn't revealed itself to me yet. This doesnt have his usual collage approach to sound design, or the immediate humorous hooks of a New Pollution or Loser - it's much more sedate, and frankly quite sad. I honestly thought 'Nobody's Fault But My Own' was on here (It isn't, it's on Mutations) - that's one of my favourite songs of his, and it feels like it would fit, so I'm giving this a pre-emptive bump up to 4 because I think it'll continue to grow. But yeah, not what I'd call a cheery album.
Familiar with this artist and album name for Lost Cause, but this would be my first listen all the way through. This album was a lot more slow and melancholy than I initially realized, even with the single I already knew. Upon closer inspection/second listen with lyrics I really appreciated the themes explored - unpacking a breakup and the feelings of depression experienced towards the end and after a relationship has ended. Lost Cause remained the standout for me, but I also enjoyed the sound of Little One found a new appreciation for the album in its entirety.
Sooo sad, but beautiful. Need to listen to the first half more actively
8,5
this album was pleasant, a bit slow all the way through, so this is a low 4
Beck played at the Interstellar Rodeo festival in Winnipeg in 2017. I didn’t go that year, I went in 2016. That was the last year of Interstellar Rodeo and the host cited the festival’s failure was due to free concerts that also took place at The Forks, which might be true but in the pandemic someone tried to host a boutique festival at The Forks in 2022 that also didn’t fare well. Maybe people just don’t want to pay for stuff at The Forks. Thankfully this album is better than the ultimate outcome of Interstellar Rodeo and my story. I liked the strings on Paper Tiger, and happily listens to this album twice today!
I’ve heard of this guy Beck before. I can’t say I’d know any of his music. I enjoyed this album. It’s very chill and well mixed.
Would give 4.5/5 if I could, if I ever got broken up with or was really sad this would be a 6/5. Wanted to look into this album a bit more. He caught his fiance of 9 years cheating on him, with a guy from a different band.. he wrote all 12 of these songs in one week apparently. Even more impressive, due to how layered and complete each song feels. Really enjoyed this and will be checking out more Beck.
Well produced, mournful indie rock.
this is beck?? its so weird hearing be so serious. not as quirky as his other work but that's not necessarily a bad thing. he's such a talented and versatile musician
His finest until Morning Phase, which is the standard. Hard to fathom that this heartfelt beauty comes from the artist who debuted with Stereopathic Soulmanure. But Beck is never predictable, always changing in the weirdest ways.
Really enjoyed this - different than I've listened to before but was a pleasant surprise
Way more mellower and mature than Midnite Vultures. 4/5
I have always liked Beck and this album does not change my mind. It's not his best but it's definitely worth four stars.
I listened to this one a lot back in my Halifax days. Been a while since I gave it a full run. Great album. Might even make my burcules’ aughts chill vibes vol. 3 mix
Pretty good Beck album! I didn't finish it, so I need to revisit.
I liked it.
Better than I expected.
omg i actually really loved this???? i think this is better than arcade fire LMFAO. the vibes are more my style
Not his best album but still has some bangers on and the string arrangements are an absolute masterclass.
Great songs and production, his guitar is a little Nick Drake in places
Beautiful melancholy-soaked album. Pretty evident the sad conclusion of long-term relationship has it's fingerprints all over this record. Much like his companion-album "Morning Phase" I like it more as a cohesive than liking enjoying specific songs. Although it can be overly mope-y at times, it is still great and I really like the orchestral additions that make it more than just folk rock.
Listened to this while playing Leviathan Wilds with my partner. We lost. This album brought me right back to college. I love the production on this album...the strings are so warm. A fantastic rainy day album...I guess I just never listen to it because I live in the desert.
Magnificent sad bastard work
Nice.
Shows his range perfectly. Emotional album for Beck
Haven’t listened to this in a while. I liked it better years ago. Too samey now. But it’s still real good. Just more kike a 3.75
Never been into Beck, but this Album is great, although i read, that it is not representative for his other work. Anyways, good one. Fav: End of the day
Good working music
Can't tell if this actually impressed me or if I was just in the perfect mood to listen to it today. Either way, loved it.
So I wasn't expecting a quiet album. It is wildly different than Odelay...very melancholy, self-pitying, dark self-reflection. "Days turning to sand, losing strength in every hand...days fade to black..." The lyrics are sensical, not like in Odelay. One has to be in a certain mood to listen to the whole album. I think he was going through shit in 2002.
Very very nice album, I listened to it with my friend who is a huge Beck fan. I might make my rating higher when I relisten, but I am not sure yet. Great album.
Paper tiger's guitar solo combined with those strings is just lovely. Quite a diverse soundscape in this album so far. Really impressed with it, the range from 3's acoustic quality, to some of the more ethereal sounds we see. And it still flows well. Had only heard Beck's "Everybody's gotta learn time before this". which is a shame. This was a good listen. Gonna have to give it a 4 to be consistent with other ratings, but this is undeniably really good.
Very nice.
Never listened to Beck before and found myself really enjoying this one. An infectious laid back groove and mellow vocals. Beautiful music arrangements with lush strings. Thumbs up for me…
I first came across Sea Change after reading an interview with Bruce Soord, frontman of The Pineapple Thief, who spoke highly of it. Given Soord’s knack for emotionally resonant songwriting and atmospheric production, his recommendation carried weight. I was curious to hear what kind of album could leave such an impression on a fellow artist known for introspective music. From the very first track, Golden Age, I was struck by the album’s mood—melancholic yet strangely comforting. Beck, often known for his genre-hopping and ironic detachment, completely sheds that persona here. Sea Change is raw, vulnerable, and beautifully restrained. It feels like a quiet confession whispered through lush arrangements and aching melodies. Listening to Sea Change after Bruce Soord’s recommendation felt like being let in on a secret—a quiet masterpiece that rewards patience and introspection. It’s not an album for every mood, but when you’re in the right headspace, it’s transformative. It’s Beck at his most honest, and for me, that’s what makes it timeless.
liked songs: Paper Tiger, Lonesome Tears I liked this better than Odelay 3.75
Very Chill album.
This gave me "Beck as Nick Drake" vibes, and I was very here for it.
> the Beatles
The Golden Age - 8.5/10 Paper Tiger - 8/10 Guess I'm Doing Fine - 8/10 Lonesome Tears - 8.5/10 Lost Cause - 7.5/10 End of The day - 8/10 It's all in your mind - 8/10 Round The Bend - 7.5/10 Already Dead - 8.5/10 Sunday Sun - 8.5/10 Little One - 7.5/10 Side Of The Road - 8/10 81/100
Forgot how good he can be! He’s pretty diverse in his output but this is my kind of Beck
Really well done... I'd just have to be feeling some kind of way to listen to the whole thing again. I think it's probably a 3.5 for me, but it's good enough to round up.
Pretty good. Maybe not as good as the very similar one 10-13 years later.
Relaxing, simple, beautiful and stunning!
better than I expected. My American experience is limited to the one radio hit here (Red Wine), from another album. This is a well rounded of global flavors
The guy who wrote Loser got slapped in the face and started taking things seriously.
I like this side of Beck.
incroyable
Only a quick listen really, but I was surprised how much of this didn’t land with me. This is definitely a great introspective record, just a bit slow and wandering. I have a better relationship with his other slow and wandering record Mutations. Still giving 4 stars as this is a good listen and I think it would grow on me with more listens.
Beck sheds his esoteric folk for something a bit more traditional but it doesn't lose anything as a result. Guess I'm Doing Fine was a real highlight in an album that is no high paces, high tempo or high spirits but was a great match for my mood today.
Fitting my own musical taste Need to listen more :3
Yes fine alright okay jolly good. 6/10
Oh man, I am REALLY conflicted on this one. Listen, I absolutely love Beck. Guero is probably going to be an instant 5. The fact that he’s got 3 albums on here makes me incredibly happy. But that’s just the thing, usually his albums make me incredibly happy. This is sad Beck. I don’t like listening to sad Beck ☹️. That being said, this entire album is absolutely beautiful, even if it makes me incredibly sad listening to it. Favorite song is “Paper Tiger”, with a special shoutout to “Sunday Sun”. Also worth mentioning is the super cool album art. Whenever I like the album art, I always internally give a bit of a bonus point. It’s simple yet cool, and really compliments the vibes of the album. I really don’t know if I want to return to this album again, but objectively it’s gorgeous and incredibly well done. Perhaps Beck at his saddest, least goofy and most vulnerable. So, final verdict? Let’s give it a 4, on the dot a 4.0. I am going to need to listen to Guero as a palette cleanser though after this.
Just already heard this. Beautiful Goodrich production, and Ive never rated Beck as a singer fairly before this. Stark, restrained and brilliant songwriting.
A bit mournful yet an interesting combination of styles and still full of hooks.
Lush, beautiful and vibrant, which ends up being a contrast to the isolation and loneliness of the lyrics. Awesome stuff
Man, this album came out within my peak Beck listening years and I barely remember it. It’s pretty to listen to but still too ambient (or like… airy? idk the right word) for me to really get invested. Maybe that’s my loss, but if I was in this kinda mood I’d go with Morning Phase nine times out of ten.
this shit changed high school tylore’s WORLD. agree with nelson that it drifts off in the back half, but beck’s still a killer with two turntables
First half so good!
Langsam und ruhig, ein bisschen traurige Stimmung. Handelt von dem Ende einer Beziehung
Very pleasant but not boring.
Feels like a decent 2000 soft rock album-- Didnt love but it definitely fits its time frame. I think if I was in a differnt mindset I might really like this album
I've listened to 2 Beck albums so far and don't remember them being like this. Moody, atmospheric, gentle, good chords (I love good chords). I said in a previous review that he must be dead boring live - and I was pulled up on it by someone who's seen him. But I totally stand by that comment as there's no way I would want to sit through him doing these songs live unless I had been given a guest pass and was right at the back near the exit. However for pootling around in headphones, tidying away the garden stuff and putting the bins out then this is perfect. So far Beck albums have got a 4 & 4 from me. He's consistent I'll give him that. 4½
These days I barely get by / I don't even try".
Love it so far. Never given this a listen. Gonna shoot for all the way through
I've listened to a few Beck albums before but, "Loser" aside, I never really liked them all that much. The reinvention on this one is this sorely welcomed by me! Indie folk has a very fine line between "heartbreakingly beautiful" and "most boring thing I've ever heard", and Beck manages to stay on the right side of the line here.
W9rking in a record shop peeing in plastic tubs then in a bunk bed with my ex in laws ignore me while...well doing whatever it was they were doing. Before that I don't know bill came back
Surprisingly good
I like the vocals and songs. It's worth revisiting once in a while
Enjoyed this one a lot more than I imagined I would. It being produced by Nigel Godrich, who most notably works with Radiohead, probably helped with that.
The front half of the album is EXCELLENT - near 5⭐️ territory. But starting with Round The Bend, the album shifts into a more ambient-oriented sound that sort of loses me, although I can see the thematic significance behind it. Idk, maybe I'm not heartbroken enough for it. Tentative 4 because the front half is that good. It might need to grow on me some more. Standouts: The Golden Age • Paper Tiger • Lonesome Tears
Chillig
One of my favorite albums. “Lost Cause” was on heavy rotation during my angsty teen years. I once heard someone refer to Beck as “Bob Dylan for millennials”, and while I hate that phrasing, I think that there are certain undeniable parallels between BD and Beck that make his music timeless.
good
Not a typical beck album that I'm used to but a really nice chill sound. Would be a good driving around at night album
I really enjoy this album. Lotta of underrated classics on here, depressing as hell, but still fire. Love it. 4/5
This was Enjoyable, I’ve been struggling to find some acoustic tunes and this album is full of those.
I feel like this is the spiritual precursor to Morning Phase which is a beautiful album. I liked Sea Change but not as much.
Classic
BIG improvement to Odelay Emotional songwriting with nice folkish production
Next time I'm heartbroken or sad, I'm putting this one on! Amazing production! fav tracks: The Golden Age, Paper Tiger, Lost Cause, Lonsome Tears, Guess I'm Doing Fine. 4/5
Oh my god, who hurt you?!? This is not the fun, quirky "loser" Beck. This is a Beck that has been through some shit. Lost Cause is an immediate add to favorites - heartbreaking.
The better of the dour Beck acoustic albums- this one has some great songs on it (even the japan bonus track is pretty good) but it's a bit monotonous in it's sustained mood. It's the beginning of the last leg for Beck's career- by 2010 he'd run out of steam, so it's to be savored.
So laid back and cool. Love it. 4.5/5
Glorious album
Gear: Focalman Cleardara Artwork: 🌈🪮🧁 Production: 🎧😘🤌 Music: 🌧️💔🎻 Rating: 🌊🌊🌊🌊/5
Historically I’m not the biggest Beck fan so ai wasn’t expecting to love this. But this is such a good album, very very high quality song writing.
Belíssimo disco. Introspectivo, com canções simples e tristes e diretas. Ótimos arranjos orquestrais. Beautiful album. Introspective, with simple, sad and direct songs. Great orchestral arrangements.
Melancolico, envolvente, atmosferico. Excelente.
Parts sound like they could have inspired Car Seat Headrest, but it might just be a coincidence. The round the bend song sounds quite a lot like Nick Drake, and a few others as well. They don't really feel like rip-offs though. Feels a lot more pop/polished than the last one if I remember right. I think the last one was also much more varied, which doesn't make it better necessarily. Just read that its the Radiohead producer, which I guess explains why it feels polished in the same way as this era-Radiohead like some of Kid A and Hail to the Thief. Not really any downsides, only I guess that some of it feels a little bit boring, but definitely still listenable. Favourite songs: The Golden Age, paper Tiger, guess I'm doing fine, lost cause, It's all in your mind, round the bend, already dead, Sunday sun. Overall around 7/10
very different to becks other albums but a really nice change of style that suits him, really lovely strings and vocals, delving into themes of heartbreak, very good album will be interested to listen again
This album was pretty heartbreaking, but it was also very sweet. In like a father john misty, bright eyes, soul crushing or soul examining type of way. Painful as fuck but the vulnerability has a real beauty to it. Beck is growing on me. I know Beck, like most, to be the Loser guy and the Que'Onda Guero guy, which is real bad of me to be summing him up in such a way. So this kind of album was like a pretty solid gut punch. It's not like I'd put something like this on on a regular basis or anything, it is miserably potent. Overall, this group of tracks felt very relational to one another, and complimentary in that way where to me they almost sound like the same song trying to say different things. They are equally potent though and they all have unique sonic moods. Shit makes you feel cold and alone as hell. I mean if you're in the mood to wallow this is the album for you. Goddamn!
It looks like you got a little pain behind those eyes
Chamber pop feel with the Nigel production 👌🏼 I think I like sad beck
Love de vibe. Lekker mellow
I prefer wacky, genre-bending Beck to sad, pipe-and-slippers Beck but this has some wonderful moments. It's a beautiful record at times but it could do with a few changes of pace and a bit more adrenaline. Obviously the subject material centres on heartbreak and you can't really argue with a man writing from the heart, especially a man with this kind of talent at the top of his game. It's best when it leans into the more layered, psychedelic moments but it also has a gorgeous fragility as songs build up around his plaintive vocals. I don't know if the generator has finished feeding me Beck albums but I hope there's at least another twist to come as his 90s output definitely deserves inclusion above the two 00s representatives I've had so far.
Great album to chill to!
He had a lot of interesting sound/instrumentation choices throughout. Oddly enough, I found his voice monotonous yet pleasant.
Owned. Lots of playtime. It helped me through my first significant break up. Oh Annika, if only... ;-)
I don't think Sea Change is a great starting point in any sense of the word. It hardly represents Beck's overall discography, and when it comes to alt-country you certainly have acts better suited to ease you into the genre. This is why my first go around with Sea Change a couple years ago was something I could recognize as great, but ultimately decided was not for me. However, now I find myself liking outfits like Silver Jews or Big Thief more than ever, and it allows this album retroactively to flourish, albeit still pale in comparison to its contemporaries. Beck's monotone delivery compliments the sweeping instrumentation gorgeously, and the heavier moments pack the right serving and balance of emotion and grandeur. It can be a bit dull in its weaker moments, and as with seemingly all albums of the 2000s, it is too long, but this album deserves to be seen as one of Beck's crowning achievements, even if it isn't the best representation of his overall catalogue.
As I listened it grew on me. Certainly melancholy. I liked it
Lovely album with Nick Drake vibes. But probably not essential listening before you die.
Always got time for Beck
The perfect soundtrack for driving through the hills of Arran, rugged, tranquil and utterly beautiful
I enjoy this record
I am very much into the Sea Change type Beck. There’s no particular reason why I should prefer this to other more gentle acoustic offering but I think there’s something about how he structures songs that appeals ro me. I hadn’t heard this before but I did listen to Morning Phase a lot.
I liked to sad tune which I believe fit perfect for a rainy day
Lost Cause is a favorite song of mine. The rest of the album compliments it well.
I always think of Beck as an assentic musical genius (he seems to be able to play every instrument), while I know of so many Beck songs, I haven't listened to enough of his albums. I use to have the CD's of Guero, Odelay and Mellow Gold but outside of those I only knew a couple of tracks (Lost Cause and It's All in Your Mind). I went into this album no recognising any of the track names, but there were a couple of songs I recognised. The album feels so melo and emotional, it feels like Beck was in a depression. I had to read his wikipedia, and it seems like this came as a result of a 9 year relationship ending. I found this album so heavy and sad; while it was a good album, it's not something I would play unless I want to sink into a depression. Standouts: The Golden Age, Paper Tiger, Lonesome Tears, Lost Cause, It's All In Your Mind
A really nice toned town album, the acoustic guitar was kind of the main driving force of the songs with some strings in the background, it kind of reminds me of Nick Drake songs on Bryter Layter sometimes especially on the song end of the day which is probably my favourite from the album, not too much variety in the whole album other than the difference in some of the singles with a more larger sound to the choruses but that’s not a bad thing when it’s done well, which it was. Favourites: the first 3, end of the road, round the bend, already dead and the last song which also is linked to roads for some reason. Overall, 7.5/10.
Really good album!
Genuinely enjoyed this album. I had listened to a few of Beck's singles before, but never Sea Change in its entirety. Like a lot of artists who straddle the folk and rock genres, Beck doesn't shy away from exploring the bluer side of the emotional spectrum. I liked the instrumentation on many of the tracks, incorporating melodies and countermelodies from instruments you wouldn't expect from the genre. In the last 90 seconds of Paper Tiger, there's a duel between the guitar, strings, and bass that is just sublime. Favorite tracks: Paper Tiger, Lost Cause, Sunday Sun
I've never listened to Beck. I've heard a lot of his music and have always placed it in my 'not interested' bucket. This is the first full album I've listened to, and I really liked it. I didn't associate this sound with him, and I know this might be a rare sound for him, but it was a pleasant surprise. I might return to this one.
This was a chill good album
I dunno
So Beck made a major change from Midnite Vultures (his best album IMO), to Mutations to Sea Change. I would rather Midnite Vultures be on this list rather than Sea Change. This album is very slow, and includes some remakes of his early work (It's All In Your Mind, Guess I'm Doing Fine). I was going through my first divorce when this album came out and it helped a lot. For that alone it gets 4/5 stars. top tracks: The Golden Age Guess I'm Doing Fine It's All In Your Mind Little One
great sounding different kind of Beck album. Really chill and mellow ..
Aside from Lost Cause which seems to be a Spotify indy mainstay, I had heard nothing else off the album. Pleasantly surprised at how thoughtful and well done the album was. Will listen again.
Liked this a lot more than I was expecting to. I think I almost prefer this side of Beck to his usual style. A touch of Nick Drake melancholia about this which is no bad thing. Ok so it may be downbeat and not too cheerful but if it’s done right, like this, then it can still be a good listen.
Not sure if it is the deficiency of the list or me, but my initial reaction when this one popped up was that I can name at least 5 Beck albums better than this. As the title suggests this is a massive shift from his usual, quirky, lo-fi pop catchy tunes, and instead a more mellow and reflective album. As it was the bank holiday, I managed to give this a good listen and was pleased that I was wrong to be too hasty to judge. I love the orchestral arrangement on the tracks that had it and in particular Paper tiger and Lonesome tears. If anything those tracks could have done with more. The real top track is End of the Day that perfectly illustrates Beck’s songwriting abilities that add to his calibre as a great artist. The album does suffer from the same tone to each track and is crying out for some trademark Beck zaniness. Glad that this album exists but hoping more of his stuff appears too.
Another highly thought of artist that I never really got round to listening to. Guess that’s why we’re here right? Nice and chill first song. And the second, third and fourth. Nice. Beautifully produced as well, seriously velvety. The listening notes say it was recorded following a break up which explains the tone. But, it all starts to sound the same at least until you get to the magnificence of Little One which starts to channel Soundgarden-esque grunge and begins to rock out. No doubt about this dude’s genius, but this feels a bit too personal and self-indulgent. Gets 4* nonetheless.
Great album even if it's not as unique sounding as a lot of his over albums.
could i write poetry to this? maybe
There's no such thing as a "bad" Beck album. Even his oddball debut, "Stereopathetic Soulmanure", shows signs of brilliance between the barely listenable noise-collage tracks. This is a great breakup concept album, ranking up there with "Blood on the Tracks" and "In the Wee Small Hours." However, Beck's Grammy-winning "Morning Phase" is an even better example of a "Sad Beck" record.
This is my favorite Beck album
This one definitely gets better with multiple listens. I wish there was a little more variety, but I appreciate Beck writing actual lyrics and avoiding the weirdness for weirdness sake that can make his music a tough listen.
Never listened to a Beck album before. Or any Beck really. Was really surprised at how good this was. Very sad + moving lyrics. Apparently, this album is out of the norm for him, historically speaking. I am now wondering what his work before and after this sounds like
Really enjoyed this album. Fantastic country-tinged folk with some slight weirdness you'd expect from Beck. Spacey, dark at times, and beautiful. Definitely wasn't expecting an earnest folk album from Beck given his previous output, but it's welcome. Playlisted Lost Cause, Already Dead, and Little One (weirdly that ones giving me Nirvana vibes. Like if Cobain made a folk song). Paper Tiger is probably the weakest track on the record, but that won't stop me from giving this full marks. Overall, impressed by this record. Edit: Thinking back on this one, while still fantastic, I don't really find myself going back to it. Think it'll fit better as a 4.
such a sad breakup album. reminds me of grace by jeff buckly. very subdued and deserving of dissecting of its lyrical contents. the music is subdued as well compared to the hits i’ve heard from beck as well. would love to revisit this when i’m in the headspace for it.
Alltid gillat Jocke Berg
Very atmospheric. Easy to listen to, but not extremely memorable.
Not something I would normally listen to but kinda dug the sorrow and sadness to it!!
I've always loved Beck, and I don't dislike this album, but it is not my favorite. His high-energy hip-hop-inspired music from previous albums appeals to me more. That said, the melancholy tone of this album is still enjoyable.
Pet fav song: Round the Bend This is a nice album that is about 15 mins too long. Can no one edit anything? It wasn't a slog but you feel like some of the songs bleed together.
As a piece of work that aims for melancholy, melodic and morose Beck hits his mark.
8/10
Radioheadesque
Somehow, I have the stereotype that liking Beck is kind of an annoying trait. But I didn't hate this. All of the songs are like: "I'm a bit mopey, here's a sad song, look at the moon? I think I will." Basically like 'Bitter Tears' from the Magnetic Fields, but a whole album of it (there's even a song called 'Lonesome Tears'!). He's got a little bit of that Alexi Murdoch/Nick Drake voice, especially on 'It's All in Your Mind'. Certainly more my speed than the other Beck stuff I've heard. Highlights: 'Lost Cause', 'Already Dead'
Two Beck albums in the space of a week and boy oh boy they couldn’t have been any more different from each other. Which is great thing. This one was much more calm, stripped down and sincere. I enjoyed it a lot.
OK
This was a surprisingly solid indie rock album. I am furious that this challenge is turning me into someone who listens to Beck.
A downbeat, atmospheric, and overall excellent album. Nothing like Beck’s more experimental 90s work. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is that it gets a bit “samey” after a while.
My most listened to album by Beck, and without a doubt his most beautiful. It is a bit too long, and around 'Round the Bend' the ballads start to blend together. Best track: 'Lonesome Tears'.
I think this one should've been called Mellow Gold! Liked Songs Added: The Golden Age Guess I'm Doing Fine It's All In Your Mind
Am amazed at how he can 'change' styles and it still feel comfortable for him. Didn't like him when he first came out but am now finding a place for him.
Has a folky/country vibe, but uses a lot of classical instruments with strings and woodwinds. Songs like sunday sun also seems to be inspired by indian ragas. Favorite track: golden age other picks: paper tiger, lonesome tears, lost cause, sunday sun
Lovely chill album
Quite a slow paced album, not bad maybe a 3.6. Rating up
I really liked this actually - took a while to get into this not-usual-Beck vibe, but it grew on me
When Zellers was closing, the only thing that I remember buying from it was Beck's second album on CD for 15¢. I think that album's pretty cool and this one is nice too and he's got a pretty distinct sound! Not always my vibe but I enjoyed it.
beck is such a genuinely weird musician... its so funny to me that he was making like anti-folk and alternative country for like a decade and then now just makes singer-songwriter folk rock ... this being the start of that transition. anyways hes good at both so no complains but he is a walking fucking paradox ,,, no hes not .,, triceratops
I really liked mellow gold and Odelay but wasn’t really familiar with this album. I was already in a melancholy mood and this album heightened that mood. Every song seems really downbeat and depressing, but I quite like that in a way. One day later I can barely remember any song but I can remember that pervasive feeling of gloom. Perfect if you need validation for your misery.
I loved this
I'm always amazed by how eclectic Beck's albums are. This album is a perfect album to listen to on a cloudy and cold day. It's filled with longing and melancholy. The tracks "The Golden Age" and "Guess I’m Doing Fine" are the highlights of the album. Give it a 4 out 5. It's definitely a vibe album.
Decent, though slow. Speaks to the times he was going through.
Oh wow, really love this album. Choosing between 4 and 5 will be tough.
In the era, this is one of my favourite albums. Great songs. Masterful breakup album. Twenty some years later a bit repetitive as the it progresses but still top notch songs and instrumentation
I enjoyed this way more than I would've expected! The songs had a familiar feel to them, although Lost Cause was the only one I actually knew before listening to the whole album. It's the gloomy soundscapes that really caught me, the musical arrangements are great! The production in general is really, really good. Considering the lyrical content and the overall mood of the album it felt a little bit long at times and I don't know if the songs would work too well on their own, taken out of the context of the album. All in all this was a great listen though and I'll most likely go back to it.
A good album, I liked The Golden Age and It's All In Your Mind the most.
4/5
Beautiful album. I loved his acoustic guitar playing.
4 stars
Sad but hopeful, way better than I'd been led to believe. Great for a sunny morning.
Now I’m sad
Not sure how I missed this Beck album years ago, it’s a very enjoyable rainy day listen. Different than the Beck albums I am more accustomed to. I enjoy the meandering semi-folk style songs. One thing, he seems to have really latched onto a specific descending chord progression, it’s used on quite a few choruses here.
This album is very soothing and sad. I fw indie pop/rock a lot tbh. I’m very connected to this album almost like I AM MUSIC. Nah but can someone help Beck he’s going thru something. The only problem I have is that his voice is very raw so at times it can be very hurtful of my ears but yk what can u do I like it. Some favourite The Golden Age, Round the Bend and Guess I’m doing Fine AMAZING SONGS. I’m very tempted to give this a 5 star but I just can’t having the last 2 songs being sorta mid. Overall I would have to give it a 9/10 4.5/10
I love Beck! I would have gone with Guero tho
wait i actually really liked this?? the strings were so gorg!! and i love music to kill myself to
Good album. Come back to this one
One of my personal favorites by Beck. You can hear the heartbreak he’s going through and sets a great tone throughout the album. Hard to find a bad song on this, but here’s a tip: Listen to this and then Morning Phase on a long car ride.
good, chill vibes, bet neuzkabino baisiai, tokia fonine muzika darant ka nors, although noreciau paklasuty dar karta
Mellow and ok
As with Bowie's work, one likes the more straightforward efforts than the more ambitious, chameleonic records, which too often sound like desperation-tinged, relevance-seeking than authentic artistic evolution. The opening cut – the opening line – is an all-time fave. The rest of the record is a bit more mixed, with some standouts ("Guess I'm Doing Fine," "Lost Cause," "Sunday Sun") alternating with snoozier fare. Thankfully, there's a good bit more of the former than the latter. Overall, strong, however, and highly listenable, ideal for a quiet afternoon and bonus points for maintaining a consistent and coherent tone throughout.
This is the Beck I love! Honestly this album is one I would point to and say "yes, Beck is great, listen to this!" Now, lately life has been a little much and Beck's album is a bit EMO so it may not be something to put on repeat if you need a pick me up or are already feeling down. Some people find sad songs great when they are sad; I just feel broken. And because this is so frickin' good, it will or at least can, break you if you are not ready. Be prepared as the lyrics and the way he delivers can sneak up on you. That may well be what makes this so brilliant. It is so deep and meaningful. I don't love every song on the album so it can't quite reach my pinnacle in ratings, but it r e a l l y comes close.
A really pleasant album. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Definitely will be listening to again.
I thought that this was pretty good. It had a classic folk feel and it was moody and atmospheric. I hadn't really heard of Beck but I liked this. Felt like Beck was accepting that his sound needs to evolve with time and I think that this is a great example of an artist doing that.
Sad Beck is kinda all right, not as good as happy and wacky Beck, but it's better than I expected after reading the reviews. Listening to a whole album of what are essentially break up songs is a big downer and I had to split it up in to multiple sessions. Not because it's particularly poignant in my life right now but because one can only listen to so much acoustic/string/big feelings songs in a row before getting depressed Some of this ventured in to nearly country music due to the chord progressions and the occasional slide guitar, but not in a bad way. Otherwise it's a pop album, a more than decent one. I think the highlight is "Guess I'm Doing Fine", though I also enjoyed “Round the Bend” and “Already Dead”. A lesser artist would've made a bad album of complaining but Beck is good enough of a singer and musician to make it sound earnest. A perfect album for a specific mood.
Well, this wasn't half beck. 3.5/5
Decent
4 maybe 5
Svag fyra
A wonderful album that took me by surprise. I didn’t love Odelay but Sea Change is very good. Beck is a distinguished songwriter and guitarist, and this album is both relaxing and moving. I was trying to work out its influences, of which I’m sure there are many, but the most obvious to me was Nick Drake. Round the Bend is very reminiscent of River Man. The album also sounds quite similar to Radiohead and Eels in places, but that’s not to say it doesn’t stand on its own two feet.
As someone who hates Beck on an everyday listen, this album was unbelievable. Couple misses, 8.7/10.
