Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Some of the lyrics are straight up hilarious, to wit: "Not on the bed, lay me on your sofa Call before you come, I need to shave my chocha You do or you don't or you will or won't ya? Go downtown and eat it like a vulture" EAT IT LIKE A VULTURE!!! hahaha Otherwise, some cool beats. WAY too horny though.
Not at all my kind of thing, didn,'t listen to whole album, dismal
Missy Elliott's Under Construction turned out to be better than I expected. While it’s clear she’s an interesting artist with a lot of creativity, the album leans heavily into R&B, which isn't really my cup of tea. Tracks like Work It showcase her innovative production and playful lyricism, making them stand out. However, the overall R&B-driven vibe makes the album feel more conventional compared to her earlier, more eclectic work. For fans of R&B, this album is a solid effort, but it doesn't fully capture the boundary-pushing style I was hoping for. Still, her talent and originality shine through, even if it's not entirely to my taste. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 1 STAND OUT TRACK - Ain't That Funny
deserves to be on the list, but not my thing. She talks too much.
First time I hear about Missy, can’t say I missed too much
Did not love it.
Decent songs buts lots of interludes/talking
Not my thing, this one. But was ok, some high-energy stuff here
oh god, not mine
That was a truly awful experience.
Could there be music more annoying than this? Oh wait, I forgot about Limp Bizkit. Still, this is pretty bad. How many tracks did she have to say this is a Missy Elliott exclusive? And did she say she wants to put her booty in my spaghetti? No thank you very much. Best track: Ain’t it Funny I guess? Got a little nostalgia hit with the Run DMC and Beastie Boys samples. But is this really R&R Hall of Fame caliber music. Yuck!
I recognize that she is incredibly well liked and famous and etcétera, however she was not my type of music. There were few songs I enjoyed and I just couldn’t really get behind it.
I feel like timbo didn’t bring it…idk Best song pussycat?
As the title and the opening track outlines, this is an exhibition of an artist that needs some improvements. Half of this album is Elliott getting indiscriminately angry, and the other half is her describing (often vulgarly) her sex appeal, which she defends in a strange PSA in the middle of the album. Both of these halves fit into the general theme of Elliott gloating about herself. So, does the quality of the album warrant the narcissism in the lyrics? Not particularly. Some songs are up there rivalling the old-school hip-hop that inspired the album, and some are a serious chore to listen to.
No, sorry. I don't like rap. I tried, really I did - but it's awful and I hate it.
Nothing wrong with this album, but probably not going to return to this
One time I was on at a club with my girlfriend, Missy Elliott came on, she looked at me said "MISSY ELLIOT?", we then left. Work it is kind of a cool song tho Best Song: Work it Worst Song: Ain't That Funny
I was more entertained by the features
The most redeeming qualities of this album were the artists that were featured on the tracks.
Dont like that kind of music
Tycker alla låtar låter likadant. Inte riktigt min grej.
Helt okej ändå. Kul att hon pratar lite mitt i albumet o grejer. Låter som hon är en rimlig dam. Lite gungigt o grejer.
Not really my thing. There are a couple of good songs.
Missy’s and Timbaland’s beats and creativity are impressive as always. She merges a very old school style of rapping with production that was way ahead of its time. She was a shot in the arm for hip-hop and is an amazing talent. All that being said, this album has some real duds on it. This is more “Work It”-and-Friends than an actual album. But “Work It” is such a great song that it’s hard to be too mad about that. I think Missy, like many rappers, is a single-oriented artist rather than someone focused on making a cohesive album. I think someone dying having never heard “Work It” would have really missed out, but this album? You’d be alright giving it a pass.
Good Drum and Bass
If you need to do an intro and frequent interruptions justifying and explaining your album, it’s probably rubbish. If you don’t believe enough in your own art to let it speak for itself, I’m not going to take it seriously. Also, what’s with the “this is a Missy Elliot exclusive” intro on every song? It’s your album! We know whose fucking song it is! PS - I agree, fuck Bill O’Reilly
Really didn't care for the intro, just get on with it missy! If I wanted background to the album I would have read it on Wikipedia. Then she starts talking half way through the album why?? Appreciated Ludacris and Jay-z turning up for cameos. And they probably saved this album from being at the bottom of my ratings.
I didn’t hate it but it didn’t do anything to blow me away. It felt like an album with an idea and theme but it may have gone over my head. Liked back in the day but I just didn’t feel inspired by the album.
Not my thing.
I had heard the singles, overall the full album was more consistent than I would have expected. I don't really love this era of rap, but it was alright
Best bit was a few bars of Jay Z
Would have given this another star but THIS IS A MISSY ELLIOTT EXCLUSIVE
missy elliott and timbaland is a great combination
2/5. Should have edited out the talking bits. It cheapens the album. By a lot.
Missy feels like a guest on her own album, with collaborators like Beyonce, Method Man, and Jay-Z feeling like generic deep cuts from their own albums. "Gossip Girl" is another example, a very Ludacris-style song, but that one is actually good. "Pussycat" is a weird example of an out-of-place neo-soul track that has nothing of value except smoothly transitioning to the Beyonce track. "Work It" is by far the best track on the record, and one of her best songs. Excellent display of her rapping skills, personality, and Timbaland's production work, with plenty of quirks to blow you away. We don't get to see more of this style until "Slide" for the last 4 tracks, and it's nice to hear that distinctive abrasive electric style, but they do feel pretty weak. Missy is a great rapper, and has some great production work on this record. But the songs are weak and inconsistent, feeling a bit forced to appeal to mainstream audiences. If you want a Method Man song or a Jay-Z song with Missy on it, there you go. But otherwise, there's nothing of value besides "Gossip Folks" and "Work It".
She's good, but this album was not for me.
Not a huge fan
Early 2000s rap scene is something we all would like to forget ("we" being me and probably few more people somewhere in the World). Unfortunately, this list like a constant reminder just how awful that time has been. Missy Elliott missed a lot with Under Construction. It's a below average adventure through mediocre beats and underwhelming flow. I just want to get out of this ride (which I have done after 5 songs).
I’m not a hip hop fan.
Not into rap/hip hop.
Just not for me. I appreciate that Missy came on the scene when there were few female rappers but I just don’t enjoy the sound.
Elliot fait du hip-hop?! Pis c’t’une madame??!!
It’s ok, but not really my brand of music.
Not my preferred type of rap. Wasn't bad just not my jam.
I've come to the conclusion that I just like very specific types of rap for some reason. And unfortunately this didn't fit in there. Can't put my finger on it, but it just didn't move me at all for some reason. I appreciate that she's taking a stance for the ladies though, quite a lot of rap can be very misogynistic in my opinion. So hearing something different than that is refreshing.
Tää soundi ei ikinä oikeen oo purassu. Mutta Missy on genressään ihan raikas poikkeus. Vähän liian 2000-luvun allun meininkiä mulle. Ehkä kymmenen vuoden päästä aika on kypsä. 2/5
Bored me to death
I was quite looking forwards to this; it's what The Project is for really - making you appreciate things that you'd never listen to normally. And it starts quite well - Bring the Pain, with Method Man, is a good song. It drags a touch though, and there's not loads of variety for me. Glad to hear it, probably won't again.
not my style at all, but honestly i grew to like it more as the album continued. Slide?? I really like that one 2/5
Early 2000s hip hop was a giant leap in production but that doesn’t make this particularly good.
each their own.
Not really my music taste
This is my second time listening to this album all the way through, and I still have the same feedback: what do any of the songs have to do with the Under Construction theme she establishes at the begining of the album? The songs aren't bad, although they get very repetitive in feel and theme. Her feelings about losing Aaliyah are obviously genuine, but talking about all those deaths in hip hop before dropping these songs just feels like the definition of monetizing tragedies. Give me Supa Dupa Fly over this any day.
We had Missy Elliott's debut just over a week ago, and the difference is striking. This one is so much worse: the songs are weaker and why all that talking?
Typically hip hop isn’t my bag. Musically interesting but lyrics are infantile. Nothing to say.
Not horrible but gets a bit tiring after a while, would have been 3 stars if it was half the length
Just fell flat for me. Had a few good songs but nothing I wanted to hit repeat on.
Can't help it, this really isn't my kind of music.
Not my genre at all. Starts off with a line that aged like milk…”you don’t see Bill Gates and Donald Trump arguing, cause they both got paper!” Definitely an album that doesn’t age well. Decent sounds though.
polished, boring. Sorry.
Loved Supa Dupa Fly, but this one is a pretty bad miss for me. I really don't see what any of the songs have to do with the message she says during the Intro. Not every song needs to be a profound statement on life or society, but you kind of lay down that expectation when you open the album talking about the struggles every human or family goes through.
Album 40 of 1001 Missy Elliott - Under Construction Favorite Tracks : Rating : 3 / 5 I didn't enjoy Missy as much as Missy enjoys Missy.
future sounds fresh from the 90s past
pretty good for the genre. Explicit lyrics.
When a song says "We can bump uglies if you ain't got your monthly" I'm out.
Missy is a rapper. She spits bars. She has raps. She will rap up bars. She’s been know to wrap and rap and spit.
This album continues to be well out of my comfort zone. I'm not a lover of rap or hip-hop, but have over the years listened to some. So a mild combination of rap, hip-hop, r&b and pop is pretty much how we come up with this compilation. I remember when Missy Elliott became popular and was all over the radio, though with some censorship in the middle of songs at time. At the time this album came out, it highlighted for me the dreadful dullness that had occurred with popular music at the time. No doubt the fans think this is amazing. And of course it has been placed on this list, which to me is maybe just because it was trying to do something different with this combination of genres at a time when it needed something different? I've listened to this today. It has bored me for the entire almost hour it has been playing. It doesn't draw your attention, nor hold your attention. It could be the same beat for each song, but I can't discern it. No thanks. Next please.
Hey it wasn’t that bad there was some nifty parts and I like the running them of working on yourself and society as a whole she was spittin when she talked about beefing with folks. 2.75
1. Intro / Go to the Floor: crazy beat, begin aint it but second flow is a lot better. 5.5/10 2. Bring the Pain: bit better but still not that great. Method Man feature goes harder. 6/10 3. Gossip Folks: great beat, Ludacris feature pretty good. Overall track alright. 6.5/10 4. Work It: pretty good track, like the reverse parts. 7/10 5. Back in the Day: yeah not it, mediocre singing with some random Jay-Z lines. 3/10. 6. Funky Fresh Dressed: this one is really great, good flow and lines. 8/10 7. Pussycat: bruh these lyrics. Song itself is good 5.5/10 8. Nothing out There for Me: Beyoncés vocals really carry this track. Overall nice duet type song. 7.5/10. 9. Slide: this beat goes hard. Overall great sounding track, with good flow. 10. Play That Beat: mwah not great per se. 5.5/10 11. Ain't That Funny: good parts in between mid parts. Beat is interesting. 6/10. 12. Hot: not really that great. Feels like reusage of other songs. 5/10. 13. Can You Hear Me: pretty nice song. 6.5/10.
Mostly just had it on in the background and was fine
2,5
It doesn’t appeal to me in particular, but it’s not horrible.
Beats were pretty classic, but the lyrics really kept me from getting into it… Probably not gonna listen again.
Not for me
Some nice eulogies to her friends who had passed away. Very talented rapper and lyricist. Just not for me
I've heard a few of these songs before way back in the day. At that moment in time and at the ripe age of 10 or 11, it was pretty good. It's honestly pretty hard to listen to now and I don't think it has aged very well. Definitely not something I could listen to for more than 10 minutes without being ready to move on, it's just a little too intense and in your face.
It's fine; I like it, but don't care if I ever hear it again. I guess if this is your thing, this album is excellent.
Not my thing, but I'm glad to have listened to it anyway.
Not my preferred genre but was okay.
Old school
Missy definitely has an iconic voice. Sounds a little like Lauryn Hill but grittier. I was expecting more out of this album. I feel like Missy Elliott is regarded as a pretty iconic female rapper but this music was mid as hell. Some of the features were good (Jay Z) but I just didnt vibe with the tunes. The songs just felt low quality. Not great 3/10
Not so annoying but perfectly valueless
Not my thing at all, but base sounds good.
Favourite song: Gossip Folks One for the karaoke: Pussycat - I just know that this was Nick and Shaun’s favourite song, so to see their faces light up as I dedicated this to them in Woody’s would mean the world to me. One for the car: Slide Great to see the lads Method Man, Ludacris and Jay Z show up but there were some lyrics in this album that made me me want to steam iron my fingers x
Zegt me niet zoveel.
Fine.
Lacking originality and it shows - most tracks rep on the same bar for up to a minute at a time, giving way to guest rappers who lay down much better lyrics than Elliott is even close to coming up with herself. Throw in a few unfortunate cultural references and not much distinction in the backing tracks and this is just a forgettable mess
This was not unpleasant but kind of passed me by.
Pretty good beats but not really my cup of tea.
Sadly the songs featuring other artists outshines the solo songs. Gossip Folks, which I consider one of the best songs in the album, is completely carried by Ludacris. The same thing goes for Back in the Day, feels like a Jay-Z song featuring Missy Elliott, rather than the other way around. All in all an OK album, but it's lacking "personality". It just feels like a bunch of singles thrown together, rather than a thought through album. Not sure if that was intentional?
p890. 2002. 2 stars Hip-hop, so not my thing at all. Well done of its kind, and had me tapping my foot, but a lot of the tracks just blurred into each other.
eh
The beats were better than the other Missy album from this list, but the lyrics just completely turns me off. I don't understand how she can be on this list... Twice!
Better than the first one for sure. fews hits but not my type at all
Hip Hop. Again so not my thing. And while there are some songs I don't actively hate it's just not something I listen to or I'd like to listen to again!
2/5
Really hard to say something about this one. Sounds to me like any other R&B and or hip hop album. The beats don't really stand out too much, the lyrics (didn't listen that carefully 100% of the time) are also quite generic rap stuff. Her flow is cool I guess (sometimes). It's also 56 minutes long so it's a real chore to make it to the end. In terms of the songs themselves I guess it's OK, but in terms of what it's doing to me, unfortunately it's a 2/5
Snark
Attitude as music!
Meh...
Classic 90's/early 2000's rap. Silly that every song starts with "This is a Missy Elliott exclusive". All of the biggest collab/guest rappers. Songs are meh, ok. Same lyrics/theme for most songs. Overall good initial message in the intro and at the end. Cool tributes to artists that are dead. I enjoyed listening to it but will not give it any more listens.
While I am impressed that she fit so many Missy Elliott exclusives on there, I didn't love the album. I did quite enjoy Slide, Funky Fresh Dressed, Back in the Day and Work It, and also the monologues. Bit of a tearjerker when she addressed the haters with 'you may not think I'm a real hip hop artist...' I DO think you're a real hip hop artist, Missy!! But I'm still giving Under Construction 2.5 stars.
Beter dan verwacht, maar meh
Work it is nice, sonst meh
Not really my thing, to be honest. 2/5. The song with Beyonce was probably the one I enjoyed the most, which is pretty telling given it's quite different in style to most of the others. Generally, I tended to enjoy the bits that weren't Missy Elliott rather than the bits that were, which isn't great. I just don't get on with her style of rapping for some reason, Play That Beat (which was much more R&B but still just her) was quite good.
Not for me. Respect to Missy for being a badass take no shit kind of artist who does things her way. Work It is a hip-hop classic from my high school days and sampling from the Beastie Boys was a cool surprise, but this was never my scene or genre.
Ok but gets a bit samey after a while. Nowhere near as good as Ms Dynamite's debut, which came out the same year.
Full disclaimer: the songs on this album are all "Missy Elliott Exclusive" - I'm glad she let us know this at the beginning of each song. Some decent rhymes, some not so great. Didn't like any of the tracks except for the back in the day one with Jay -Z. Everything else was not for me.
Not my thing.
Can stay unfinished for me
First Listen. Besides the couple of songs that I knew, I didn't enjoy much of the rest of the album. It really isn't my kind of music. I do think that Work It is one of the best of the genre - so props to her for that one! 2/5
Fun album to blast in the shower and confuse your partner with your musical choices. The Timberland production has aged well. Never appreciated Missy in her time but can clearly see her legacy in hip hop today with huge artists like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, etc. That's fantastic. Also the Method Man track reminded me how hilarious sex duets are. I don't take 56 minute showers tho. C
this was incredibly disappointing. 40% waffling on about some old shit, 40% R'n'B bollocks and 20% work it.
Like licking cum off the back of a tortoise. Like sucking on a corpse's cliterous. Not very nice.
Overall, just kinda forgettable. The beats are fine, the flow is fine, but it’s not my thing.
I think this album came out after she’d annoyed the entire world with Get ur freak on. I quite like the samples being drawn from absolutely everywhere- there’s a sort of mad scientist vibe to that. But the rest of it. No.
Rapnek jó de most nem élem.
Not a fan of her music I guess.
Some good musical ideas in here. But, I get bored quickly with bloviated, self- aggrandizing lyrics.
Started off ok. But then wasn't into it
I don't like this genre, but it's not THAT bad.
Pas ma tasse de thé
Really not my style of music, but it was clearly a big inspiration for some of the rappers and hip-hop artists of the 10's. Love that Beyoncé is featured on "Nothing out There for Me" as "Beyoncé Knowles", as she hadn't even released an album yet. 2/5
Pleasant. But if I never heard it again, or never had heard it, I don't think my life would be any the poorer.
-Nice "-aded" rhyme scheme in "Intro / Go To The Floor" -Method Man's verse on "Bring the Pain" was nice -Good bassline in "Back In The Day" -Overall just didn't really like the album, just fairly bland hip hop
Rap
Average hip hop?
Not for me.
Not really my favorite type of music, although I can appreciate some of this. 2 stars.
Was never super into Missy.
rap . okish , not gonna listen again
It was shit
-classic hip hop groove. -could get repetitive.
1,5/5
Not a terrible album but all I could think while listening is that most of the talent is with the producer and some of the guest performers.
Missy can sing, that's for sure, but hip hop is so positively, definitely, not for me or aimed at me!
Every skanky girl in my year at school listened to this stuff back in the late 90s/early 00s. I never liked her singles, just sounded like the real trashy end of rap. The full album isn't AS bad as the singles, and tbh the few actual sung songs are pretty good - she can really sing - but it's still full of annoying shit like "Timabaland" and Jay Z chiming in every now and then to let us know how cool they are, and it's got that "street philosophy" going on about life, death and dead rappers that heaps of derros think is really deep... not for me. 2/5.
This run of garbage is nuts 0.00
Not a genre I can relate to or come close to ever liking. I gave it a try with this, but it was a real slog and just consolidated my dislike.
Corny, really not feeling this at all.
Not a genre I enjoy or get on with and as a result unfortunately I didn’t make it all the way through the album. What I did hear I didn’t particularly like. Sorry.
Not good
Not a fan, does that mean I am a boomer
Rubbish
Despite this lists best efforts I will never ever like in any minuscule way American hip hop Muzak. End of. Please no more. 1/5 22/4/26
👎🏻
Not much here for me. Probably one of my least favourite styles of hip hop.
more annoying than entertaining.
No es mi estilo
No, no, no
Yeah, rap still isn't for me. This one has slang that I don't understand, so the lyrics are often lost on me.
Tries to use repetition to reinforce a simple theme and beat you into submission, doesn't work for me, just does my head in. Use of tacets is the only dynamic element the album has. Hey lets find a riff or a basic beat and just repeat it and sing stuff over it or even whistle! Lets go one further and repeat the words as well! Listen to the first 20 seconds and you've heard the song - OK generalisation but for most tracks thats true.
the feats are decent and that's the only nice thing I'll say. this is the most default-sounding early 00s female rap imaginable. beats are forgettable, lyrics are nothing special, and it all sounds exactly like you'd expect it to sound p.s. "this is another missy elliott exclusive...🫦🫦" — yeah, dear, wish it wasn't 😭
What a bullshit! -5
Nah, this one's straight dookie. Things did NOT go up from yesterday.
Yeah not a fan tbh
This one is not for me. Favorite track: "Back in the Day"
i remember hearing something from her on mtv not being so bad but this was literally unlistenable for me, skipped most of it. and what's up with all this aggressive bragging in rap lyrics, who even cares?
It was bloody awful.
1.2/5 For someone who doesn't like rap or hip hop, I actually didn't mind this. Would I put it on again? Doubt it, but I could actually listen to this without skipping songs or wanting to turn it off like some of the other rap stuff I've heard.
Hip Hop, with one of the blandest album covers the genre has to offer. 1/5
i don't have to like everything
I've heard it said that rap is music and hip hop is a lifestyle that includes rap. I can only assume that my liftestyle isn't hip hop. This album isn't as bad as some rap albums, but it isn't my taste at all.
Some cool samples but I don’t like her voice, delivery and lyrics. Gets dull very quickly.
What a terrible day to have ears.
Nop
Not my thang. Even if it was, this wouldn’t be. Extra half star for the elephant.
"This is a Missy Elliott Exclusive" is just as annoying as DJ Khaled yelling "DJ Khaled!" and "We the best music!" before every fucking track. Really doesn't help that none of the tracks here are nothing special. I just don't really like anything here: the flow, the beats, the lyrics. There really is nothing here.
I tried to give it my best shot but I just really didn't enjoy this at all. I'm sure at the time a woman singing about being empowered sexually was unusual and ground-breaking...but the music did nothing for me.
Yeah, no.
This is a Missy Elliot exclusive review. Her flow is good, the guest rappers are good & she has a good singing voice. I just found it to be annoying & didn't care for it. She's really only on here due to her frank nature of talking about sex. Oh & did I mention this is a Missy Elliot exclusive.
When one review indicated "Bangers a-plenty", I had high hopes. What a shame that "Bangers" seems to be a reference to the people engaging in sex acts that Missy "sings" about, rather than the quality of those tracks.
Seemingly the whole damn country.
No
Ble
Fuck rating albums. Just let me listen.
Hip Hop 36eme album => 1/5
Oh man, I vaguely remember this when it came out and I was a teenager. I (thankfully) haven't heard it since then and can't imagine I'm going to like it any more now. We shall see... Yeah man, this is still not for me. I just don't like this kind of music at all. Not a real instrument in sight, bad lyrics, repetitive beats. I get that this is regarded as one of the best hip hop albums of all time and it's a cultural cornerstone, but it's just not something I enjoy. 1/5
Words cannot express how much I hate the song Work It. I hadn't heard it for years - perhaps a decade or more - in fact, I'd gone as far as mercifully erasing its entire existence from my mind. Now that it's very rudely invited itself into my life again, I cast my thoughts back to when it was popular in my university days and how I recognized then that it was the most obnoxious, hideous, distasteful shit that had ever forced its way into my eardrums. The grating, gimmicky instrumentation, Elliot's insufferable attitude mixed with her abhorrent gangster accent, the vulgarity of the lyrics, the infuriatingly ridiculous "yer perminipi mwem yurkle" trash that spews from her mouth - everything about it is repulsive beyond measure. Here we are 23 years later and nothing has changed. I CANNOT STAND THIS PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR A SONG AND I HATE THAT I WAS SUBJECTED TO IT TODAY. I OFFICIALLY CROWN "WORK IT" THE MOST DETESTABLE PIECE OF MUSIC IN EXISTENCE. MISSY ELLIOT, TIMBALAND, I PERSECUTE YOU BOTH FOR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY. MARCH STRAIGHT TO HELL WITHOUT AS MUCH OF A BACKWARDS GLANCE TO EITHER OF YOUR FAMILIES, AND TAKE YOUR GOD-AWFUL INCOMPLETE CONSTRUCTION WITH YOU. I swear to god, if the Spotify algorithm ever dares to inject a single Missy Elliot song into my Discover Weekly or Release Radar due to my endurance of this album, I will torch my device in a bonfire of rage and curse its ashes to oblivion. Update: I paused the album and returned to it later in the afternoon, because I’m determined to listen to every one from start to finish, including those I despise. Only to find that damn awful song rears its ugly head one again at the very end, this time featuring 50 Cent. This is the worst day of music in my life.
Rubbish
Rapper. I don't like cra... e, rap.
Gib skip Funktion, this Shit cringe
The album almost makes it to 2 stars, but it shoots itself in the foot too many times when it could have easily been avoided. Sacrificing musical complexity, song structure, instrumentation, melody, likability, and infinitely many other factors for the sake of... whatever this is... isn't worth it. Under Construction is yet another example where narration is very unhelpful for the listening experience. Intro / Go to the Floor is already not a particularly convincing track, and the musically barren first half doesn't help. Pussycat is a good track, but it's similarly dragged down infinitely by the monologue at the end. Again I question how some of these musically barren song segments made the final cut on an album that's already slightly bloated. The exact same problem happens in Can You Hear Me. Missy Elliott doesn't even have the goodwill to put these in their own discrete interlude tracks so that they're easier to skip. The latter track is the final one in the album, in which Elliott declares that she hopes you enjoyed, but doesn't care if you didn't. Man, are you *trying* to make your listeners despise you? The constant cutting of the melodic and harmonic parts of the instrumental is pretty jarring, and yet is consistent enough that I have to imagine Elliott thinks it sounds good. Go to the Floor does it every single bar, Bring the Pain makes the jump-cutting part of its hook... This is a common music trope in the 90s and it hasn't aged well. Separately, Missy Elliott's voice is pretty annoying, especially when she's rapping in the upper register. All in all, the sound comes across as amateur and indulgent in lyrics/attitude while completely neglecting musicianship and quality of composition. I doubt many artists would want to listen to Gossip Folks more than once, let alone cover it. Chronologically, the first decent track is Back in the Day – partly because Missy Elliott finally sings rather than using her obnoxious rap voice, and partly because the hook doesn't keep cutting out and disrupting the smooth funky experience. The music is continuous (lacking the very sudden silences that prevent the listener from properly grooving), for the most part. 1/5 Key tracks: Back in the Day, Funky Fresh Dressed, Play That Beat
Eerste nummer geluisterd, gaan we lekker niet doen
Shitty pop rap. No. Sound is interesting, but those vocals... Just NO.
Ok
Nö!
I don't understand why anyone would like this.
Likte da egentlig ganske dårlig
Not my jam...
1 ster.
Simply annoying HipHop album.
# 416 : Nah. I still don't like rap…
The search for hip hop I don’t want to switch off continues. I want to like this better than I do (indeed at all) because the artist probably deserves it, but it is full of sounds that make me feel like a cat having water splashed on its face or noise from someone else’s car drowning out what I’m trying to listen to.
Gutter rap. Gangsta rap. All of it is total crap.
Po okladce zapowiada sie przesrogo... Boze, to ma 56minut, te albumy raperskie to masakra. Nuda, piski, jeki, bezsens.
No vá
yuck
Really didn't like this. I just can't like the style. So 1 star from me.
Well, I was ready to give this 2 stars for a while 'cause there's some pretty execrable stuff on this 1001 list and thought maybe this was better. Nah.
Basic rhymes, decent but dated beats, not much to say.
Sucks
Hip-hop again, not my scene!
Awful
Not something I enjoyed
Not a genre I enjoy nor would listen to on my own.
I've never really liked Missy Elliott and a whole album of it was way, way more than I ever needed. I alternated between bored and annoyed the whole time.
Rap.. No thanks
Not to my tastes. I'm not into the staccato, the propulsiveness, the atonality. Just not engaging to me.
not for me
This is an absolutely dreadful Missy Elliot exclusive. The Elliot-Timbaland produced tracks are the worst. I survived nearly 1 hour of this rubbish. A few tracks were tolerable like "Pussycat". The first half is definitely irredeemable. I'm afraid I have to give "Under Construction" the rare 1 star.
Favorite Track: Back in the Day (feat. Jay-Z) This was such an unenjoyable album that I did not enjoy in the slightest. I would never go back to listen to this one. Not for me at all. I rate this album 1.4/5
And I still don't like rap. I can remember a song by Missy Elliott that I quite liked. But that was a long time ago. I can't do anything with that music. I played the first few songs. I usually fast-forwarded after the first aggressive chant. I found it amazing that the transitions, although randomly chosen, were not audible. No, I really don't need that. 1/5
Missy is a good rhythmic rapper, which I like (as opposed to spitting a million words a minute ala Eminem) but I don't really like any of the songs...which (obviously) defeats the entire premise. For the most part it's the production/mix which is awful - way too hot for my preference - understatement as its actually annoying and painful to listen to especially in headphones. As for Missy herself, she's technically good but I don't get anything in terms of legit emotion or power and I actually don't like her voice. Plus these lyrics - god. Beyond cringe. Not even funny in a stupid middle school way, just embarrassing. I can see how she was influential - as well as the album - but I don't like it at all and had a lot of trouble getting through it. Probably should give 2 stars for influence but an easy 1 for me personally.... 3/10 1 star
I didn't like it. But I'll probably give it a listen later in life!
The first album I'm giving a 1.Its annoying, generic, and only has a few good beats. Trash
Feels like the early 2000s was an awkward time for hip hop, these beats don't sound fresh despite some big name collabs. Production is boring and Missy's lyrics are making me cringe. Really awful opening and closing monologues too. Leave this one in the past.
Yet more Hip-Hop? The only thing that really differentiates this from all the other Hip-Hop albums is that this is "sung" by a woman.
I tried, I really did but I couldn't get through this album. Absolutely horrible.
The worst in music
Less of my style.
Egocentrisch, zelfverheerlijking. Kansloosheid. Ik ben klaar met dit soort troep.
cRap!
Dear Missy. It's easy to hate your music without being a hater. I'm a pretty decent person but your "music" manages to mix boredom, irritation and the stupidest, most puerile lyrical content which seems to infest your genre. I'm going to listen to yesterday's album from Janelle Monae again. There is an artist worth listening to.
Nope.
Oh, for goodness sake.
Nä tack!
Even worse than the other Missy Elliott album. I did sorta try though.
Not a rap fan
Just not a rap fan.
Didn’t listen
Cringed more than sang along, not a pleasant listen but I don't think I am the target demographic, not sure who is.
i’m not really the right audience for this
Not the biggest Missy fan...which I think means I am not the biggest Timbaland production fan. 1.5/5
Hated it first time round. Still do now.
bad. really bad.
worst so far 1
Pastiche to my ears
Why can't I rate albums that are really, really shit as a zero? I thought I'd got as low as I could get with Supa Dupa Fly, but this was worse. Oh well, only another 819 albums to go...
I have not listened to much from Missy Elliot, but there were at least a couple of tracks from Under Construction that I've heard before. The listening experience for me was a combiniation of okay, good or even great beats, combined with lyrics ranging from unfortunate to terrible. I could not listen to this again, and I can't recommend the album to anyone.
I didn't know this artist but it's not the kind of music I like.
Is this hip-hop? There are a few tracks where she gets to do her thing but it's like the record executives decided they wanted a R&b Beyonce clone with generic studio tricks sounding like Janet Jackson's daughter. Too slick with no heart, feeling or commitment. There's just too many layers of gloss to see deep down- I suspect underneath she's a talented artist with something to say but she's buried beneath the whoops and drum tracks.
Not for me!
Oh my gosh I did not like this one bit.
I really don't like hiphop. I can't really comment on the musical quality of this album within its genre, but to me it's unlistenable.
Y’a quelques bons beats.
utter shite
Didn’t like
Bring the Pain has a nice musical hook to it: musical, no lyrical. That's all I've got...
shite!
wtf is this commentary shit, fuck this garbage.
Just not good.
Love The Kinks!
I like this better than the first Missy album, but that's not saying a lot. At least she didn't rhyme "Missy" with "get pissy" this time.
I never mind that hip hip albums are more autobiographical than some music, but one thing I distinctly dislike is when an artists has to drop their own name every song. Maybe I'm selfish for wanting music to be more malleable and relatable to myself... I mean, who am I to discourage art as a form of raw self expression? It's just not within my taste.
Not for me
Meh
Yeah. This isn't for me.
Cringe
Not a fan at all
Terrible. I can’t handle it
this ain't for me
Meh... Liked this album a lot better when I was a kid
