Pretty good, enjoyed listening to this one. Some amazing featured artists on this album
I know lotta folks that like Missy Elliot and there are some bops, but overall not my thing. Not bad though. Classic 00s hip-hop for sure.
Took me a few tries to get through this one but it surpassed my expectations. There are some poignant lines and “work it” was a massive hit.
2.5/5
This is a Missy Elliott exclusive. Appreciated the monologues and the songs were mostly fine. Not my typical genre but I could see myself throwing this on again.
No suena nada mal. La mejor canción es Nothing Out There For Me con Beyoncé, seguida de Play That Beat.
some good r&b jams but missy isn’t the best rapper so timbaland carried this album
The album starts off really strong (with the exception of her annoying posturing chats in amongst the songs) but after a couple of listens I'd have to say this might be the least of Missy's albums. Timbaland and Elliot's beats are just groovy and they're trying to get a bit of that old school soul and hiphop feeling here, but after a few songs it feel like they just weren't fully in it. As for all the guest appearances, Ludacris has never been one of my favourite rappers, Jay-Z is not adding anything special, 50 Cent is not nearly as bad as most people make him out to be, but it's not a good last song of the album. The TLC colab "Can You Hear Me," would've been a better choice. One good appearance is Method Man though. Love his work in Bring The Pain. Also I'm always smiling with the Beastie Boys references, like in Work It All in all, not a bad album, but not really special either.
Learned of one new banger from this album
I thought it was better than Supa Dupa Fly. The feats were more interesting and the more modern production by Timbaland suits her music best. But for the love of our Lord the Rock Lobster can you tell me why there are two of her albums in this book? This is ridiculous.
Missy Elliott has a less flashy attitude on this album, the songs are laid back, but solid. The beats are catchy. It's not my type and I'll probably never go back to it, but nice job!
This was great. I loved the intro acting as a prologue. It would probably get on your tits after repeat listens, but it helped to set the scene for me. Work It was a little cheeky back in the day. It still managed to put a smile on my face. The old skool feel with all the samples is strong, yet Missy still keeps it relevant. The Roxanne Roxanne head nod was a surprise. Like most hip hop albums, it's probably five tracks too long. I would have given it four stars if a little shorter, but three for now. Still very strong.
bumpin
Listened to on 5/25/22 3.5/5 Favorite song: work it remix, play that beat The theme of this album is so good - the songs were all in all great with lots of amazing features. I enjoyed listening and hated this hip hop less than pretty much every other one
not her best
Strong start, Gossip Folks had some absolutely filthy beats, but faded towards the end. Whilst good to hear a woman's voice against the background of pervasive misogyny in hip hop, the album wasn't as strong as I'd hoped.
It took a few listens to get into but eventually I quite liked a few songs on this. "Bring the pain", "Funky Fresh Dressed" and "Slide" were quite good.
My first Missy Elliott album. Not bad musically every once in a while it hits a reslly cool groove, most notably on Back in the day...definitely a cool song. Now the lyrical subject matter is generally pretty juvenile...nothing wrong with that, per se, I mean juveniles are people too. The spoken word intros get a little hard to take for sure but all in all a good listen that could work for me as background music that once in a while might push it's way too the foreground. 3.5 🌟
Almost lost a star for everything being an exclusive.
I haven’t minded either of her albums 👍🏼
Not bad
Started strong but ultimately a three star record
Certainly didn't hate it. Although the monologues at the beginning and end felt completely unnecessary to me.
enjoyed that - bit all over the shop and a couple too long but good
Lotsa flow and a few standout songs (“Back in the Day,” “Can You Hear Me”) – notably the more R&B-oriented ones – beyond “Work It.” One likes the empowered-woman vibe, but the boasting, self-referencing and name-dropping bore after a bit. The spoken-word stuff is tedious, too, even if it’s hard to disagree with the messaging. 3.4 > 3
Pièces préférées: Work it, Gossip Folks
Great singles, just generally not my thing though. Sorry Missy!
Far better than I expected it to be. Some great tracks on here 3.5
Not bad. Some decent tracks, but a fair bit of filler, and generally not my cup of tea.
Missy elliot is cool, but not my thing.
I am familiar with Missy Elliott and I was familiar with some of the songs. I don't think I had ever heard this entire album previously. The beats were good. The lyrics were alright. I probably would not choose to listen to this entire album again, maybe just a couple of songs.
This takes me back 20 years! My brother was really into his early 00's RnB/Hip Hop. Nice listening, for nostalgia's sake, but wouldn't revisit.
Fantastic
Some pretty good stuff. Not my bag though. I enjoyed quite a bit but wouldn't go out of my way to rehear most of it.
Rap femenino con el típico estilo. Sin mucha estridencia y escuchable, sin más. Voz agradable.
One of the better female rappers. This album has some solid beats and one of her best songs. The features are solid. This album is decent and some of it has replay value. 6.2/10
Solid, not outstanding, but understandably got some decent traction back in the day.
It is different from her first couple records and I'd not heard this all the way through. A bit of old school feel mixed in for sure. By the end though, a bit boring.
Definitely under construction. The finished Missy articles are great, the rest needs work.

3. pretty good! I did skip through the skits and speeches though.
The slow jams fail this album. Classic beats, great rhymes and flow. It just can't be kept up through the whole album. Best Tracks: Work It; Back In The Day (feat. Jay-Z); Funky Fresh Dressed (feat. Ms. Jade)
Hip-hop popero.
Bastante bien.
Some of her songs are along the same line as WAP and taking back sex for women, which is cool to hear. That said, this isn't really my jam. I am between 2 and 3 stars, but 2 is more indicative of this not being the type of hip-hop I like rather than the album itself. Some cool collabs on it, a bit too many mentions of songs being exclusive Missy Elliot, however.
This review is being brought to you by crsb. This is a CRSB 1 time exclussive review. Enjoy this Reviya, read this reviewya blah tah tah. 2.5
5/10. Does she have to tell us at the start of every song that this is a Missy Elliott exclusive? I liked the song with Beyonce, and the one with TLC because they are interesting takes on these other artists' music. I also liked that the album had some heartfelt themes and meaning, but at the end of the day, I am not a big fan of the bulk of Missy Elliott's music.
Feels really outdated. Also I don’t need to hear that every song is a Missy Elliot exclusive. 5/10
Another great album that I never got to listen to at the time. Felt almost conversational at times but the raps were great and I'm glad we got this one on the list.
Like Missy, but this seemed average, and no standout tunes for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Awesome beats for Missy to rap underneath. When she is going with her low vice, I felt she was really in command of the song. "Gossip Folks" was a bit annoying, though. The frantic-ness of her voice did not mesh well (I am a big fan of Ludacris, so that was kind of disappointing.) I liked the guest vocalist, they really added something to it. I am never a fan of interstitial stuff, so the outro / intro stuff in songs I could do without. It's hard to believe that she has been recording for so long, and Aaliyah has been gone for so long as well. After this I listened to her big hit, and it still really grooves (although the baby sample does get annoying after a while). So I enjoyed the Missy Elliot album, as long as she was using her speaking voice. But I do not think I will be coming back to it.
Misdemeanor doesn't mince words, and isn't afraid to share what's on her mind. In her effort to save hip-hop she mostly succeeds. Highlight Tracks: 3, 4, 6, 8
An interesting listen, great lyrics and delivery but not hugely interesting musically. Top tracks: Work it
This album started out hot, I was dreading listening to this, but the first songs grabbed me, good word play, good flow, catchy beats, first 3 songs were 5-4-5. I was like holy shit, this is Timbaland’s magnum opus, this set the stage for Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake. I was excited that I realized, “let me work it” is based off of a Blondie sample. Then it started to slide and got worse, the quality dropped, the sentimental songs sapped the life out of it, the beats lost their luster and eventually it faded into the background. By the tone she wax eulogizing her friends I just didn’t care. 3 for starting out strong. The line, “you don’t see bill gates and Donald trump arguing” because they’re rich, didn’t she well, or did it?
Missy's great, especially in a garbage bag costume
IThere are some pretty good songs (Work It, Can You Hear Me?) the rest was mostly just okay with the exception of Pussycat which was just kind of embarrassing, especially the explanation at the end of the track. I know Missy is a hip hop icon but this album is just not something that I'd choose to put on in my free time. I respect her as an artist, but its just not for me. 5/10 for me. I'll give it a 3 star here just because I don't want to round down.
Fun album to listen to. Some hits and nice features I liked. Probably won't listen again.
Definitely not my kind of thing - but I can understand why people like it.
This was released at the peak of Missy Elliott's popularity. Half the tracks feature big-name collaborators (Jay-Z, Beyonce, Method Man, TLC) and it's produced by Timberland. It's commercial, accessible and an easy listen for the genre. I'm not sure Pussycat has the feminist credentials that Missy thinks, and I could have done without being reminded that "this is another Missy Elliott exclusive" at the start of EVERY track. Missy sounds good though and neither her voice nor the instrumentation grate on me like many other hip hop albums have. I therefore do not feel the need to "kill it with a skillet". 3/5.
Pretty good hip hop album. Benefits from Timbaland producing everything so it sounds consistent. Quite a few bangers
It was pretty average tbh so I give it 3/5 stars. Not a big fan of Missy's voice.

I don't like late 90s to mid 2000s Hip Hop, she goes hard tho
Delicious classics
Missy has never been my thing… stray’s a little close to pop stuff for me. This is alright though!
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Bring the Pain, Gossip Folks, Work It, Play That Beat Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: I respect the purpose and execution of this album, I just wish I liked the outcome more. 2.5 rounded up.
Meh, it's not bad. Sounds like pretty generic early 2000's hip hop though, and it is a little boring.
3.5
Fun and interesting album even though not my normal jam. Nice vocals, good beats. 3.4/5.0
Missy Elliott's fourth album & the second one I've listened to - thanks to this site. This hip hop album is a classic from 2002 and it has some memorable beats like the hit song 'Work It'. I enjoyed this blast from the past and many other people must have, because this album is certified double platinum.
Standard early 2000 rap
New to me. Not in n but wheelhouse but that doesn't mean it's not great. My favorite song is the one with Jay-Z. Loses a rating for having to introduce each track with "This is a Missy Elliott exclusive". That might come across as charming if the track appears on some upcoming random playlists, so we'll call it a push. Missy knows her hooks. Actual rating is 3.5.

The elephant on trumpet on “Work It” get me every time — though Method Man on “Bring the Pain” is my favorite bit here.
Jay z thooooo. Leuk album.
Work it
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. Not sure I'm a fan of her type of beat, but her energy was good and she seemed passionate.
Decent. Love the sequence.
I've heard her name many times but don't recall having listened to her music, so I had no idea what to expect. I like a lot of the tracks. Really infectious rhythms and love her use of voice. It was only my first listen so I didn't get to into the lyrics, so I'll need to come back for that. Totally enjoyable.
I really enjoyed this, I didn't think I would but I thought it was great. There is a part of me that absolutely loves listening to women singing about enjoying sex, dunno why really, it gets me off or it's empowering or something
I was grooving all the way to work with Under Construction playing in my car. It has retro-elements, not just in terms of musical production, but also in terms of it's lyrics. Miss Elliot is very nostalgic here, and the lyrics are fun, poppy, but also light and a little underwhelming. Fav tracks: Bring the Pain, Work It and Back in the Day
Cool 2000's vibe hip-hop
*This is a Missy Elliott original*
Kovaa kamaa 3-4 biisiä, muuten aika tuubaa. Kuitenkin noi timantit painaa kolmoseksi!
Ahhh world famous slickly produced rap. Rap has come a long way from the pre Rick James days.
Hyvin vähän kuunnellut, mutta tykkäsin kyllä. Kovia nimiä ollut feattaamassa.
Work It is 10/10 I feel like during this era of hip hop albums were inconsistent af but this still has some certified bangers.
Super solid rap album. Rap is not my thing in many cases but there are a handful of songs on Under Construction that I enjoy for their groovyness and lyrical flow.
Jepa meininki, mutta sitten käy puuduttamaaan.
It was ok, not a huge fan of missy elliott
Missy has never been my favourite tbh but this album was fine.
3.7 - Another hip hop album I wish I'd listened to earlier - Missy's a godmother to so many current rappers. Her monologues interspersed give us a chance to better know her POV and to empathize. Some real bangers on here. Also a couple of duds. Above all, Missy comes off as honest, sometimes brutally so.
Good beats and production and she's entertaining to listen to. Clever lyrics throughout. Bringing in other rappers and Beyonce was a good idea. I can always listen to "Work It" one more time.
“Under Construction” by Missy Elliott (2002) With lyrics full of self-contradictory complaints, braggadocio, and slutological/pharmacological initiative, Elliott is the señorita of sass. One wonders what’s going on inside. On the outside, she’s putting on bling and excess pounds. The poetry of her rap, while prodigious, is of low quality, with overly opportunistic rhymes, limited thematic scope, tedious repetition, eighth-grade vocabulary, and stunted vision. One great lyrical disappointment is that she opens the album (“Intro/Go to the Floor”) with a hopeful anticipation of approaching the land of seriousness and then proceeds to wander away into the wilderness of self absorbed carnality and tasteless superfluity. One suspects she’s spent a lot of time there. She does provide a helpful (if unconvincing) apologia (at the end of the slutfest “Pussycat”) explaining her predominant lyrical themes, but what they actually boil down to is: “I’m so stoned, so satisfied, so victorious, so satiated, and so oppressed”. And how many times does she have to introduce herself? BUT her sound is well crafted, with vocal skills that are considerable, if under-utilized. She shows an excellent sense of dynamic range and variety. Backing/accompanying vocals and instrumentals are excellent. Very creative grooves. As pornosonic ear candy goes, this stuff is pretty good. 3/5
liked it more than i thought and knew more of the songs then i thought i did
Hip-hop popero.
Missy does have a way with the presentation!
Aquí hay bastantes cosas interesantes: Gossip Folks, Work it o Slide.
Bumping female hip-hop vocals
Not really my thing but I enjoyed it. Great, creative writing and decent beats.
It's not my favorite style, but she has some great songs on here!

Not bad, but not my thing.
This is solid. Made me like Missy Elliott more than before i listened. Interesting extra messages from her, though why is everything an "EXCLUSIVE"? Good energy.
Not my jam, but I respect it.
god. a fucking boss
This album cam out when I was four. So obviously I didn't get to listening to it then. It's good hip hop love the beats.
Fett bra faktiskt. Modern klassiker.
Enjoyable. Work It is a banger OBVS. Missy Elliot, more like Missy Good Album.
A few stand out songs, was pretty good. Don't have much more to say
This was okay
missy elliott is missy elliot
Both Timbaland and Missy are excellent here, crafting a well-deserved classic. I'm not familiar enough with the history of the scene to pick up what precisely was happening with Aaliyah, but the skits suggest a degree of cohesion.
It was a good one for sure, but not what I wanted to hear that day
Okay, but I expected more from someone with such a proceeding reputation like Missy Elliot. Actually found myself enjoying the lesser-known songs more; maybe I'd feel differently if I heard this album when it was first released. Doesn't do much for me, but is not a bad listen. Top tracks: Slide, Ain't That Funny
# Album Name: Under Construction # Artist: Missy Elliot # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Couple of good songs but god damn, this feels so dated and long # Top Tunes: Work it / Gossip Folks # Would I listen to it again? No
Under Construction did not age well. The general zeitgeist has changed a lot in twenty years and hip hop went in a totally different direction. Jay-Z sucks.
I tried.
Didn't do anything for me, looks like a comfy hat though
Top : Work It Flop : Gossip Folks

I see the significance of an album like this, but I just don't like this style of music
Sometimes you just gotta power through some of these albums.
For me, Rap is Rap and I just don't like it. 2 stars or D.
Simply not my thing, but the music was brighter than others if this type.

Didnt enjoy. The method man track was by far the best but the rest sounds stuck in time

Missy is fun for a minute but a full album is insane. Timbaland's got some beats.
Hmmm. I liked early Miss Elliott stuff. It was experimental and the videos on MTV were also interesting. The Intro to this album is unnecessary. Sadly, Missy Elliott was at the forefront of the odd rhythm stuff that culminated in Timbaland shitting over any genre he could with his generic off-rhythm beats and wiki-wiki mouth sounds. The lyrics also are a function of their time with heavy and consistent name dropping brands and wealth-signalling products. Would I listen to this again? No.
An okay album, no standout songs.
Not really my thing.

Not for me
Ok.
Ooh. Typ alla jag känner till är med. Ludacris är ett otroligt namn.
I’d heard of Missy Elliott, but not her album *Under Construction*. This is probably controversial, but in my opinion, MissE is a relatively good soul singer but a lousy rapper. Unfortunately, she doesn’t sing much (“Bring The Pain,” “Back In The Day”), so most of the time you get the feeling she’s still rambling about some meta-level stuff you didn’t want to know. The extreme example is the intro—why is she talking at the beginning of her album? That’s even worse than starting a concert with an announcement! I’m here for the music—if I’m still here after a few songs, you can tell me your name. And no, your life story isn’t valuable background info. But of course, the profile neurosis personified as a rapper can’t last that long. My recommendation to pretty much every hip-hop artist would be to just start by impressing with substance. Admittedly, it gets worse. Is that observation enough for a second star?
Patchy but not bad
2nd album of hers on this list so far. Not sure why. As pop hip hop, it's fine but hardly an album to listen to before you die.
ok
Not really mine but some songs where nice to listen to. But it’s more background music to me.
An album so referential that it feels unnecessary, very little hooks and a lot of it doesn't resonate as genuine or sincere to me. The bit of the Missy Exclusive is not fun either. Not for me
Missy Elliott: I’ve been thinking about all of my contemporaries who have died, and realised just how serious life is, and we should make an effort to do something worthwhile with our lives as they may be over tomorrow. Also Missy Elliott: here’s a song about how good my cunt is. Fucking shite.
I'm not into Rap. I can't really judge this but I don't like it.
Review - great production fromTimbaland, Missy Elliott's voice is good, but the songs are quite hit or miss and the lyricism is a bit lacking. Also there's way too many songs where she talks for minutes at a time. Rating - 5/10 Need to hear? YES
Not bad but not for me
Bring the Pain spoko.
The beats on this were better than I was expecting but I’m just not fond of Elliott’s delivery. There is 0 ounce of humility here either, which I know can be something of a staple of the genre but something I’m really not fond of. Should be celebrated for representing women in rap music of which there are precious few, but as a musical experience, just not my thing.
didn't have high hopes that this would please me and the experience was as expected. but: it wasn't that bad. not 1-star bad.
Here’s another Richard-Alexandre exclusive: this album is ok.
I think Missy Elliott is a good artist, but as an album, there aren’t enough tracks here that I want to listen to again. Work It is so much stronger than everything else.
... Who? I mean i've heard the one hit wonder before, but other than that this was mediocre at best
I needed a trigger warning for this I did not expect the pedo president to be name dropped in the intro. I went in with an open mind, but this absolutely was not my thing. None of the songs really stood out to me and I don't see myself ever revisiting them. However, I recognize why people like this and why it is important; it's just not for me. Not a painful listen, but not a memorable one either. Also when half the songs start by saying they are a Missy Elliott exclusive, it makes them seem less exclusive. Favorite Track - Back in the Day Least Favorite Track - Pussycat ⭐️⭐️
???
Early 2000s hip hop/R&B. bleerrggh
I see the appeal and can appreictae this album for what is was at its time, but there is so much BETTER female hip hop today so I just cant fully enjoy this idk
I can't say I enjoyed it, even with the Method Man and Jay Z features. Vapid music is vapid music, however well it's put together. I have a lot of respect for Missy but sitting through an entire album was punishing for me.
Missy started out preaching to me then started talking to me and chanting 'bout da booty and I was done.
Nostalgic and pretty fun. I guess I like it more now than I did then. I'm still not sure why it's so well regarded.
It’s a Missy Elliot exclusive if you didn’t know.
Sexfiksert hip-hop.
Starts off strong but gets a bit too soppy towards the end.
The one hit song is nostalgic fun, but the album is mostly just generic hip hop. I do appreciate the positive messaging though.
Not really my thing, but i love the themes of female empowerment!
Oh my god guys look it's a female rapper, and she swears and talks about sex! That really seems to be the angle that Missy Elliott is going for on Under Construction, and let me say it is not an appealing angle whatsoever. It's such a shallow record thematically, it really doesn't say anything new or interesting. Missy just kinda says words for an hour and then it's over. The beats are okay but a little stale, I feel like there are so many records from this period that sound pretty much exactly like this, no doubt thanks to Timbaland. Of course everyone knows this record for Work It, which was a massive chart success and became one of Missy's most recognizable songs. Even that song is just kinda empty for me, it's bouncy and gets caught in your head, but that's about it. The rest is bad AND forgettable. I would take any of her previous records over Under Construction any day, they have singular songs that say more than the entirety of this record.
This record is stacked with big name guest appearances but other than Work It, I'm not really fucking with this. She can rap and there are some decent beats but I'm never gonna spin this one again. She doesn't do enough rapping, too many guest appearances and too much talking.
a few years ago i’d have love it, but now, meh
For me too much rap but there is some nice groovy R&B sound in some of the songs, which I like.
Surely Timbaland is the Stock Aitken and Waterman of the hip-hop world - but with less harmonic interest. Soulless hooks, repeated ad infinitum without variation, except the odd pause. That doesn't mean he doesn't hit paydirt at times and he certainly does with 'Work It', brought to life by Missy's Busta-imitating rap - the breadth of onomatopoeia for her wayward buttocks is as impressive as the breadth of the buttocks themselves. I do take issue with: "Phone before you come I need to shave my cho-cha....Go downtown and eat it like a vulture". The analogy of a man administering cunnilingus being as a scavenger feasting on carrion is not the most sensual comparison. Nevertheless, the sexuals work in this funky beat; Then she tries an RnB, slowed-down, TLC-type tune, and sings about how to best utilise her vagina to impress her roving partner, ('Pussycat'). She knows it's jarring as takes a minute at the end of the song to explain herself and remind us that Prince started it anyway. All the good is bunched in the first few tracks, including 'Bring Da Pain'. It's not a patch on Method Man's version, but he features here and his updated lyrics are pretty funny ("Sweet lady, you drive me half crazy, maybe, we can go half on a baby....Lovely! Kick off your shoes and get comfy, we can bump uglies if you ain't got your monthly"). If I didn't know better, I'd say he was parodying his host.
This would be so much better if Missy allowed her voice not to be in competition with insanely irritating and distracting noises which took away rather than added to the overall sound
Yet another genre and artist over-represented on this list. I didn't like this any more than I did the first one.
women in hip-hop are always admirable. this album still didn't do that much for me.
Album Review 051 Under Construction by Missy Elliott (2002) Rating 2.5/5 Let’s start with the good; the music, production and delivery from Missy and her collaborators are decent enough: 4/5. Listening to the lyrics though, it’s apparent that Missy Elliott likes talking about Missy Elliott. Under Construction is essentially 12 tracks of Missy & Friends saying “I am/do/have [X], so you are/do/(don’t)have [Y]” in different ways. Shite: 1/5. As my adventures with the 1001 Album Generator continue the more I realise that, with the rare exception, it’s the rapping that stops me liking rap.
Nope
Come back to this
definitely not for me. I don't think its bad, in fact i can see the appeal if I was someone that was into this type of music, but it just isn't for me which is perfectly fine
Did not really do much for me at all.. I thought beats were very weak, the only one I liked is from Method Man and came way before this, so.. No more than 2 stars.
Eh. I didn't enjoy this a whole lot.
Her fourth album. Hip Hop. Missy Elliott has a cool voice for female Hip Hop. Some nice beats but lyrically I found it boring and a bit self indulgent. Pretty average.
This is somewhere between hypnotic and annoying. It's not for me, but definitely remember Work It being all over at the time.
Inspirationsloses R&B Album ohne wirkliche Highlights oder Musikvergnügen.
Meh.
Not for me. Definitely could be for others though, but not my cup of tea. I enjoyed the guests on the album, but that’s about it.
There is a certain thing about most hip hop production of this era... that I can't get behind Timbaland is considered a great producer for some reason. I don't really get it. All feels so lifeless. Missy is a fine rapper, maybe better than fine. But it just doesn't do anything for me, mates. You know what, slowly I'm defrosting a little. Still not my thing, but some of some songs there are not as bad. Won't listen to it again, though. I don't know if I should give it a 2 or just a 1. I gave the last Missy album here a 2. This one is not worse.. so.
Not my cup of tea but still ground breaking
Sounds very dated, even for its time. I didn't hate it, but didn't particularly love it as well.
THIS IS A MISSY ELLIOTT...
2 Stars (5/15)
Missy is at least slightly different in sound than the other 00s hip hop but a whole album was a bit too much. No need to explain what your album is about I'm the album itself, unless I suppose it sounds like it's mostly about banging. This isn't my sort of thing really, I'll give it a 2 for being mildly interesting at points.
Every track is exclusive! (your sarcasm meter should read 100%). Liked the flow and the beats but the lyrics for me were hit and miss with most falling on the miss side. In general, this album is fine but it really does not do anything to distinguish itself.
Top track; Work It
I must say I tapped my toe, but never put it on. 2.5
Not my taste
Booo Trump shoutout booooo. Always love a good Meth feature even though it's a cover of his song. The features do some heavy lifting on this one. Meh 2.
"You don't see Bill Gates and Donald Trump arguing with each other 'Cause both of them got paper and they got better shit to do" - probably because they were touching elbows at the Lolita express. Oh the innocent noughties! Work it is still such a banger tho.
What is worse than the elicit, gansta style rap ... that filthiness being sung by woman. However Back in the Day is what salvaged this album for a 2
Listened Before? N Meh, not really my cup of tea. The list of collaborators on this album is impressive, but somehow none of them really did anything for me. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Work It
(2.5) she said her own name a lot? i like a lot of this but this is a missy elliott exclusive has got to stop 😔
There was good stuff on this, but it felt very self-congratulatory, to the extent that it really wasn't for me.
At least I'll go to my grave knowing how gushy Missy Elliott's vag is. [Source - Pussycat] Some stacked features on this. Whilst I joke, Missy E has some good flows on this. Very of it's time.
Ok
Work It is carrying this whole thing on its back.
It was alright, I liked a lot of the beats but that's about it Rating: 2.4
Simply not for me.
A good hip hop album but not really my style, wouldn't really go back and listen to any of the songs again.
not my thing but I like it better than some other rap albums
I almost dropped out at track 9. If I hear that a song is another missy Elliott exclusive, I’ll kms
Not my cup of tea for sure.
Rap/RnB Album. Schöne Stimme, stellenweise chillig. Ist nicht meine Musikrichtung. 2/5
In a nutshell: flip it and and reverse it. Hi Missy. Clear something up for me please- why you gotta say "this is a Missy Elliott exclusive" on most tracks? I get why hip hop artists name drop on tracks, it's part necessity and part tradition. But I'm twitching over the grammar- a track ain't an exclusive when *everyone* has access to the track. Saying your name is enough. It sounds like I'm hating. I apologise if it sounds like I am. I'm still struggling to ditch my hang ups about hip hop. You worked hard to get where you are too, so I hafta cut you a lot of slack. I found bits that I liked on this album. Your flow is great, I appreciated the sex positive lyrics (specifically Pussycat) and I like some of the loops you used. Be mindful of grammar, k? Thanks Overall: 4/10
Na
This was okay, not really my style. Felt a bit too long too.
Not my fave genre but can appreciate it's a good example of early 00s hip hop / r'n'b. Some quite fun upbeat tunes ... Work It (obvs) and kinda like Back In the Day feat. Jay-Z for the funk mo-town undercurrents
Nic pro me
bah
It’s not for me
Apart from Work It there was nothing that overly stood out for me. It wasn’t terrible or anything but it’s one of those albums I will have forgotten I listened to in a couple of weeks. Top Track - Work It
4/10. Charismatic but not my thing. That's about it. Song with Beyoncé was pretty good though.
Miss review isch au na biz under construction.
"This is another Missy Elliott exclusivvvveeee" that got really annoying towards the end lol. I think the features really shine on this album and some of the beats are really creative. Just not my style overall, would not wanna listen to it again
I liked this better than the other Missy album but I still didn’t really care about it. Some of the songs could kinda bump and the guest verses were cool (especially Luda) though
2 Missy Elliot albums that I must hear before I die? There are some highs here, missy is a talented rapper and the production is mostly pretty good. But she sure is corny, and sone of the songs on here are borderline unlistenable.
Blind album and artist. I did not like her voice at all, and this album dragged hard for me. Skits and speeches were kind of cool, but no from me overall.
2.36
Once again as it is with all hip hop… It is not a genre that I enjoy very much, but I do appreciate her talent
Never was huge on Missy, and listening to this album confirms it to me again. I’ll give her a bonus star because I’ve spent too much time perfecting the reverse section of Work It and then playing it back in reverse. That song still slaps.
Albumi #196, 10.04.2025 Under Construction on Missy Elliottin neljäs albumi ja se julkaistiin vuonna 2002. Perus r&b hip hopia. Ei ole mun juttu.
Feels like inauthentic hip hop trying to get attention
Eh, it was fine. Wasn’t terrible, but it didn’t really grab me
This was just ok, beyond Work it -- they didn't really feel like the Missy Elliot.
Queen
It was fine
Well produced early 00s hip-hop album by Missy, it was an ok listen, but I didn't really like the more r'n'b influences (e.g. the song with Beyonce). I'm not too much into hip-hop and I prefer the 90s hip-hop more than this, so I'll stick with a 2 star.
Gear: Abyss DIANA MR Artwork: 🧥📻🏙️ Production: 🥾😲👌 Music: 🛫🏅⌛ Rating: 🚧🚧(🚧)/5
Day436 - i come into each day with an open mind but not even ludicris and method man can get me to enjoy missy elliott
Honestly this was just ok. Not really a big fan of her music outside of her hits like "Work It". Don't get me wrong, some songs are pretty solid, like "Back in the Day", but others kinda miss the mark, especially "Hot". 5/10.
Very dated early noughties RnB and Hip Hop record. Not necessarily bad, as there are some tracks that sound great, and the many features on here add something unique to each song. However, that's about it for the positives - Missy Elliott seems to talk a lot about not a lot - whether lyrically or in her many meandering monologues. Many beats on this also are too reminiscent of early 00s nightclub fillers. Best Tracks: - Bring The Pain - Nothing out There for Me Worst Tracks: - Intro / Go to the Floor - Pussycat - Play That Beat Rating: 3/10
Sounded pretty dated unfortunately. Not a huge fan
Well, what can you say about this? On the face of it not a lot. For what it is, it's OK. Questionable subject matter and lyrics. But not really for me. Worth more than a one, but only just.
It was better than I thought! Apart from the preaching.
Cool beats. Atrocious lyrics.
2.5
Interesting beats 2/5
Quite basic and pretty uninteresting hip hop. It doesn't have any unique ideas, and most songs are not that catchy (Work It is a banger, though). It's not bad, but I got bored after the first half, so there's that. 5/10
I feel awkward saying that I don't like this. I know people love Missy, so it feels almost blasphemous, but this album doesn't sound nice to me. The production has that big glitzy early 2000s hip hop sound that I think has aged particularly bad. There are some Neptunian elements that kinda still slap (did they produce this? I don't really care enough to check), but a lot of it is just annoying. I really could not care less about the spoken word sections. To me these are just messages that could have been turned into songs, but weren't. Fave Tracks: Work It, Can You Hear Me 2.4/5
Really not for me, but I understand the appeal and it sounds very of its time.
Let’s just say this: I never listened to Missy Elliott’s albums back in the day, and after hearing this, my opinion hasn’t changed. The lyrics feel weak and sleazy, and when she’s not rapping, she’s talking—and that’s even worse. The lyrics aim to be witty and obnoxious, but they don’t have the kind of substance to stand the test of time. Her talking sections, often about how women can keep their men from straying, come across as more scolding and nagging than helpful, which is ironically counterproductive. That said, I always thought she had strong production behind her, and I’ll admit, the music production here is still just as catchy and fun as it was back in the day. Her sound has been heavily sampled and used by other producers and DJs, so she’s definitely made her mark. Even so, this album doesn’t make me want to go back and revisit her music.
Spotty. But always good to hear Method Man on a track.
Considering this was recorded in 2001/2002, this sounds super dated right now.
Naah, not feeling this
Great production. I find her rhymes a bit lazy and annoying at time. The spoken bits are a bit shit. Just had Queen Latifah and I think thatcwas better.
The Good: We get a fair warning, that this album isn’t finished… The Bad: trying to figure out what additional work the album needs… The Ugly: all the subliminal context. Rap, remains, my least favorite, even when I can give 2-3* where credit is due. Missy Elliot, I recall as the artist who used to wear those puffy winter coats in her videos—or, very well possible, I only saw 1 of her videos in my life time and in this video she was wearing a puffy winter coat… or, even more probable, I can’t distinguish this from many of the other cut-n-paste hip-hop acts of the 00’s Tell you the truth, I was actually enjoying the first couple of tracks, but then it just turned into what it turned into… music I am no fan of. 2 1/2* for trying, and warning us about the construction issues… downgraded to 2* as I don’t like… rap.
Nix!
Was quite excited to listen to as I remember enjoying this album much more as a kid. Nostalgia wasn't enough to have me enjoy the whole thing. Held together by a few familiar & tracks as well as a couple good features but drags out. Her skits don't help either. Work It & Slide the only solo songs I feel like I actually enjoyed. Maybe it is just very much of it's time and doesn't hold up anymore. Quite disappointed.
I just don’t like this genre no matter how many times I give it a try when these albums come up. Not totally to my dislike as many others.
I’ve heard worse.
Meh.
Didn't know what I'd get here but I was hoping for something that would lead me in. Just doesn't do it for me. I can't buy a boat so maybe I need to rent a Bentley (?) Best: Work It Worst: Hot, Funky Fresh Dressed
Hip hop. Her first album I enjoyed much more. This one leans more into the rap, and it just felt a little flat and repetitive. There were some songs I enjoyed, but a lot of things I didn’t.
Beats are uninteresting and dorky sounding. Some of the features are okay, but other than that this is a laughable record.
I’ve found myself generally disappointed by Missy Elliott’s albums so far. Even Work It didn’t really Work for me today
2 out of 5. There were a couple of fun songs on this album like Work It and she has a good message in her intro/outro. Also the Beastie Boys reference was cool. Rest of the album didn't grab me as much.
1 or 2 good tunes. Beats were shite.
Pretty run-of-the-mill early 00s album that has a few nice beats but nothing special.
I can't express how much this just is not for me.
Work it kender man..
This is a Brett Knutson exclusive. This album has aged like milk. Most glaringly (and gratingly) are the Timbo beats but Missy’s rap style too all sound extremely 2002 and I now remember why this is the worst era in rap history. Maybe 20 years ago is just old enough to seem extremely outdated, but not yet old enough to be cool again and in 10 years this will be a 4 star album but I doubt it.
Not a hip hop fan so wasn’t likely to enjoy this. And didn’t. Don’t really know how to listen to hip hop or what I should be listening for. Using her own name in the lyrics of every song is weird to me.
Not for me.
Just not my thing.
I thought I was going to like this more but I found it very annoying. The energy and the beats and the melodies were good but the lyrics were so cringey or just horrible. It’s probably a 2.5 but I’m not feeling kind.
I really dislike Missy Elliott. The only reason I am giving this a two is because I do like Ludacris,
Too many exclusives.
DJ, please pick up your phone, I'm on the request line. And that request is no more Missy, please. Twice in two weeks is a bit much.
Again, this genre is not my thing at all. However, Work It is iconic and enjoyable enough to increase the rating slightly. The flow is good. Highlights: Work It
Work it - not the demo but enjoyed it more than I thought
