Kid A
RadioheadI get it, just not for me.
Great album overall. I love how the title track and first track is also the album name, makes it easy to keep straight. The organ is the unsung star of the show, along with the guitar and... Okay, the whole arrangement is wonderful here. Al has so much underlying strength in his vocal he smoothly lays it down. I love Al Green, what a great first review for me. It's also really cool when a "Whal Greens" has the light on it's WH go out; makes it seem like free advertising.
I typically am not into jazz music. I can fuck with this though. The initial groove is strong in each song, and he/they tend to do some individual solos and come back to that initial groove which is nice. Occasionally it goes off the deep end into super jazzy form-free stuff but not too much which is probably what makes me like it more than most jazz stuff.
Not typically a Dylan fan. I'm still not, but this is the best version of himself I think. How can I think I don't like this album if I love John Prince so much?
Better than expected. Lots of tasty melodies and unique vocals.
Freddie Mercury is so good you forget about Brian May. This album is where Queen stops being weird art Rock and leans more into rock. The guitar on this whole album is BIG. So many guitar players come AFTER Brian May. Not a heavy metal album, but it was trying to lean that way. They really may not have known what they were tapping into.
I've got a soft spot for this album. Given when it came out and it's themes it's surprising I don't love it more, but how could I? "If you want me to change, I'll change for you, and I want you to know, that you'll always get your way". If Chris Martin doesn't sound like a young married man in love I don't know what does. Married and young in the year 2000 sounds very much like me. I heard yellow on the radio on the way to the mall, got there and bought the album at Sam Goody. I had to hear this song again, and every other song these guys had made. I called home to my new bride and told her not to worry, my military training would be done soon. It was. I flew home to see my wife home over Thanksgiving and remember vividly playing Spies (track 3) and being cuddled and warm under blankets. "Feeling so bad, cause you know, spies hide out in every corner". The album shines by its midsection, yellow was probably the catchiest and very likely might be the catchiest thing ever. They literally had no idea what they were doing by connecting so many people with simple lyrics and charming melodies. With grunge just about out of the picture and pop music still not done recovering this music made it okay to enjoy things everyone likes again. I didn't and still don't care how main stream it is. People like this, and we should, mostly because it's great. Google tells us the band was inspired by U2, REM and the Beatles. Yeah, but what about the Beach Boys? The album literally defined coming of age for me. For that reason it's a five star for me.
I've heard pet sounds and various versions of Smile. This is actually what the Beach Boys are/we're. That's like, my opinion man. Before Brian Wilson went off the deep end he helped his buddies sing good and make nice music together. I hear Smile and pet sounds and I think of the very sad after for Brian Wilson, this to me sounds like some buddies having fun.
Not my style but I respect it.
His voice is undeniably clear and smooth. The song writing is spot on and just generally great to listen to.
Black Sabbath with cocaine. Not their best work. But that's okay, still a Black Sabbath album.
Not my thing but I respect it.
White kids go to Jamaica and get inspired. This is nice but not something I would go running to. These guys are out here inspiring so many bands that I wouldn't come around to for another 20 years. They heard what they heard and added in what they already had. Boom, presto, a new genre of music is born.
Not my thing. But I understand. The Beatles did this along with many others for a song or two, but this guy went full bore with this. Season of the Witch is a banger, sounds kind of like Lynyrd Skynyrd in a weird way. There's a spot on the rolling stone 500 for a compilation of pysidelic rock, this would be better.
Better Elvis. Not as dated and dry as earlier stuff. This is almost the version of Elvis I like the best.
Not my thing but I get it.
Not my thing. We could probably burry this and that would be fine with me.
Johnny's showmanship is great. π
Yeah. As you would have guessed, sounds like Steely Dan.
The problem with hole and with Courtney Love in general is that Kurt cast such a big shadow. Hole could have come back with anything and everyone would have hated it. Courtney didn't care and did her own thing and everyone thought she was nuts. Celebrity Skin, Malibu and North Star are all great songs. This album had the hot red headed bass player show up (Melissa Auf der Maur) and she really shines on backup vocals too. For what it's worth this is a solid album.
Blondie and Gwen Stefani before they were cool. Not bad either way.
The de-evolution of man kind. It rocks regardless. It's just not an all the time listen for me.
Meh...
I get it, just not for me.
Better than expected. Anyone who likes Durand Durand needs to be made aware of this. This kind of seems like a good chunk of this was stolen by DD. It's quite good, would listen to again and/or put into rotation.
If course this is wonderful. It's a special guy under circumstances that couldn't have been better to strike gold with.
It's cheesy but it is exactly what it is. It's straightforward easy listening, but it's got soul. Karen Carpenter's vocals are top notch, and so are the percussive pieces, probably because she's awesome.
I don't know if this is how the story went but here's what I always imagined happening. Big Boi and 3k had just been together too long. They decided to give the other creative control for their half of the album. Speakerboxxx is half hearted and boring minus the way you move. The love below goes off, Andre 3000 has finally gotten in his spaceship and been given the flexibility to fly away. The first half of the album is a 3 star at best and the back half is 5 star with a bullet. It's a four overall.
This is a thing, it's just not my thing.
Better than expected
It's for someone, just not me.
It's really not what people think it is. You don't have to listen to the lyrics or be personally involved with what Tori is writing/singing about (although it's deep and meaningful). To me the arrangements, tempo changes and fearlessness in the instruments other than piano make it glimmer. The piano is obviously the star, but it's more than just a sad girl shrieking and singing loudly.
Sounds like the soundtrack for any movie set in a Latin country. Very soulful, well done.
You have to love Santana as a genre-setting virtuoso-laden standard bearer. 4 very easy stars.
Possibly one of the worst things I've heard. In terms of composition and and listen-ability it's just not there for me.
This album is wonderful. Tear for fears has been very overlooked and so this is really good.
It's just the best thing ever.
Why is this album anywhere near the others?
Wonderful
I've listened to this two or three times (counting today) in the last year or two... It's always better than I remember but I would never seek it out. The problem is there are just better albums doing a bunch of the same stuff from the same era.
It's okay. I guess
As a piece of work that aims for melancholy, melodic and morose Beck hits his mark.
Punk Rick with instruments? Very nice.
It's like an old movie, I know I should watch it more often I just already know how it ends and it's not that exciting of a story anymore.
It's a good time. Spotting all the samples is fun.
Very much just noisy. The energy is great, people who like this sort of thing probably love it. It's just not for me.
Simple but effective. Personal Jesus got better when Johnny Cash covered it. I didn't say Personal Jesus by Johnny Cash IS better, what u said is the DM version got better after hearing the Cash version.
Absolutely a Hall of Fame album. The arrangements and vocals are unlike anything else.
This is where old Beatles meets what they would become.
Not classic Bowie, but still not bad. Even on his last musical leg he's doing what he does.
Not bad. Just not for me. Feels repetitive after the first 15 or so minutes.
Muddy live is so much better than a studio album. The energy is great, the crowd and improvisation is what makes this soar.
I get it, but it's not for me.
This is interesting I'm just not that interested. This heavily influences lots of other things I love, namely green day, early artic monkeys and anything else even remotely pop-punk. For as influential is it is; it's just all over the place.
An ultimate album in it's genre, also a culture step forward, use if Tupac turns it into a collective piece. Very well done.
This is pretty good and it's sad because It's whatever I guess. It sounds like somebody decided to take a regular rapper who wasn't too bad and just push all of his music through a Jay z filter. The production is great the lyrics and metaphors are great, everything's great but maybe it feels a little inauthentic because he sounds so much like Jay-Z.
This is really nice. It's no wonder people liked this. Easily a three and maybe even a four star album. The problem with this is that without wild as the wind, there's nothing remarkable enough to keep me coming back. But, wild as the wind does exist so perhaps another listen in the near future.
5 stars, no notes
This doesn't belong here.
Garbage is right
A day will come when this album is considered hip-hop's greatest masterpiece. For now it's easily a top 5 in it's genre and certainly the best of in its era and genere.
This is NOT The Beatles I love. That comes later. What you do have here are great harmonizing and genius of George Harrison on guitar.
Meh
Every once in a while this is really on point and solid to listen to. The problem is classic rock radio has worn out these songs so much it losses all of its impact. The guitar is so distinct and punchy, the vocals are top shelf and the composition is just appropriate and perfect for what they're trying to convey.
Does not belong.
Not bad. Wouldn't run back to it though.
Joni knew her audience. I'm not her target. But the arrangements are lovely.
This is trashy. Mariah has the best voice of this era and genere but does little to nothing with it. The production is fan service and does nothing to expand or challenge the audience. Yes, it's a move toward hip-hop but there's no one categorically to reckon with her. She's become an even bigger fish in this pond and it's sad. Her voice is so absolutely stunning and she picks THIS direction to go in? It's just sad she and her team could have clearly dominated any genere and just releases drivel instead. Wish I could give it no stars but that's not really an option. It goes without saying this album does not belong in the top thousand.
Wonderful. Just a tad long.
I understand the impact, as far as it being something I would listen to ever... No.
Lovely stuff. Heavily influential for next generation of Lady singers, namely Norah Jones and Amy Winehouse. It's okay. Wouldn't seek it out.
Two songs and the rest is pretty not inspiring. I get it but I don't "GET IT" like some people tell me I'm supposed to.
The song writing is so good, the voice is absolutely one-of-a-kind, the production adds flavor. She's obviously a soul singer influenced by 70s rock and whatever was on the radio. Its hard to imagine what happens on this album that didn't happen on any other album she's made. This is a gem of an album and the rest of her catalogue is pretty ho-him. Which is sad because it's an incredible debut.
Instant classic. Sets a tone of things to come not just for himself but for the direction of hip-hop.
Her voice is so quiet it's like I can't hear it.
I neither like it, get it or understand it. This means it's just not for me. It doesn't mean it's not good, but for real it's bad.
So good. This is dance music for people who aren't exactly dancers.
Why are we still doing PJ Harvey? This isn't good. At all.
Nice. Totally not for me though.
