Reviews (page 8 of 8)

45 tracks!? Of salsa and mambo. Jesus.

Fine to listen to in a bar in Spain but not really one to listen to in the car in England

Vem sjutton lyssnar på sån här musik?

Fairly enjoyable listen. It was quite different I may come back to this.

Not my cup of tea

It’s alright. For old mambo music it’s pretty good. I wouldn’t put it on myself but for only 30 minutes I could listen.

Sounded like good musicians just too much the same

Might be a good record, but the whole Mambo genre is not for me. 2/5

When the special thing about this album on Wikipedia is that it was included in "1001 albums you must hear before you die" it makes it a bit recursive. Maybe if you like Mambo music this will be good for you.

It was not offensive music but well before my time and I simply don't understand the draw of this album. I wish I could enjoy it more.

A fun album, the many tracks do start to run together.

Listens: 1 Enjoyed: not really for me Would be a high 2 I guess. I just felt something was missing - possibly a couple of beers

Worked to Fine didnt hate Good to dance to?

2 Yeahhhhh I don’t know about this one. It made me think of vacation in some ways, so I’m sure it would hit hard in the right environment, but I just really don’t see myself putting this on in my own time. I’m not going to pretend I’m any kind of expert on the genre, but I’m not sure what makes Tito Puente in particular stand apart among mambo artists. Not much stood out to me here besides some cool vibraphone on Hong Kong Mambo and Estoy Siempre Junto a Ti. My dad probably liked this because it reminds him of Puerto Rico. As for myself, not quite my thing, but I’ll give Tito Puente credit for having not been the one to shoot Mr. Burns.

This is another one of the many albums I’ve given a 2 because I didn’t get the genre in general.

Pleasant enough background music.

Didn't love it, but I actually finished it, which I can't say for a lot of the albums on here. Not for me but it's not bad music.

Ehh was alright.

not my thing, 2.

If you're in the mood for this, I'm sure it's great live.

2. This is my standard for something that is totally not me but I assume isn’t awful.

Some classic trumpet 50s music here. Although I generally would not listen to this, its soothing af and just makes me wanna chillax. Somehow i knew a few of the songs on this record so they must be popular. Anti dance mania 4/10

I want to like it a lot more than I do. It's just kind of boring, I've struggled to make it all the way through while actively listening, and made several attempts.

Decent vibes on a Monday.

I guess you need to include one mambo album on the list. It all sounds the same to me if I'm honest, but at least he was in The Simpsons so fair play. Best Tracks: El Cayuco; Hong Kong Mambo; Mambo Gozon

Salsa meh

“Y’know one day, Tito Puente will be dead and you’ll say ‘Oh yes, I’ve been listening to his work for years’“ (That’s a quote from the movie ‘Stripes’ for you youngsters). Anyway, Tito Puente is dead, and I can’t say that I’ve been listening for years. Just a partial listen of this album is more than a lifetime’s worth for me. Like the album art.

It’s fun. Probably more fun if I was drunk

Well done, but not very interesting. I guess just not my thing.

This jazz latin album is not my cup of tea, however if i liked this type of music it would be right up my alley. With raging horns and lively spanish ballads it's exciting through and through, although it isn't always pleasant to the ears. At times the horns sound shrill and the vocal performance can come off a bit one dimensional, but other than those critiques it's a must listen for anyone who likes latin jazz music. The biggest stand out moment from the record for me would be Cuando Te Vea (Guaguanco), a beautiful love song about a woman who makes his happiness complete, from the beginning of the song to the end, it's impossible not to dance with the almost hypnotic rhythms.

Just not my thing, unfortunately

not bad just not for me

Horns a bit shrill. Can listen to one or two songs before i get bored

I’m not much for mambo and the adjacent genres. It was alright. Though most songs had to similar a tone, feel and lyric.

Nada que me marcou muito.

This is not for me, every song sounded the same more or less.

They all sounded like the same song, but fucking hell did I love that song. Definitely going in a movie.

New one on me, I quite enjoyed it but not to the degree that I'd ever listen to it again.

Not really my cup of tea

when the first song played I went "Ohh..I know this song." and did a little boogy in my seat. Sadly by the time it got to track 2, it felt a bit repetitive and I got bored.

A very fun and flirty mambo album that would get a lot of people up and dancing. I can appreciate the album for what it is but it's not something I'd pop on for going out over the weekend. Best: Mambo Gozon Worst: Varsity Drag 2.5 Stars

This album has a clear goal, and that is to be a dance album. While we may prefer this over non-orchestral offerings, this requires a bit of a mood that we are never going to be in.

Brassy, schmaltzy, not a lot of variety. Certainly didn't make me want to get up and dance. I did feel some degree of energy, which kept me marginally better than bored. Perhaps I'm just in a bad mood.

Fun music. Some interesting musical complexity with the brass instruments that I enjoyed. It was not very compelling as an album to me, but it was a nice classy collection of songs.

Very nice dance music but the brassy horns and similar tempo for all the songs got old real quick

Siding with Alex here on one front: there is that rad xylophoning (God, that better be a real word) going on in “Hong Kong Mambo” and then the brass comes in like a tsunami alarm and I can’t reach for the volume knob fast enough. Kills it for me. Tito Puente is one of the great all time names though. If I had that name I wouldn’t give two shits what anyone thinks about anything.

Couldn't get into it. Might work as background music but that's about it.

Not my kind of thing, but I didn't hate it. It's definitely got a groove. I think I would appreciate music that incorporates elements of this style, but a full album is a bit much for me.

Not my type, good for a dance and sampling

If you're practicing salsa dancing

The definition of elevator music. The headline act at elevatorfest 2021. Listening to it made me feel like I was waiting for a dentist appointment.

Pleasant enough to dance to but not something I’d listen to everyday.

Didn’t listen

I feel like I've heard this album before, its fun but i dont think i love it I think it's important as Tito puente invented the genre but it's hard to enjoy because of how much of a staple his sound is

Nicht meins!

didn't listen super intently but as background music not bad; better than nick cave

Enjoyable but I don't know if I would come back to it as an album, maybe would listen again to see if there were specific songs I liked

The kind of music which would be alright in the background of a Spanish restaurant. Not one I’d listen to at home.

I think that this is a good album for Friday, but it's not too much more than it.

Not bad, per se. Just not terribly interesting to me

This is not my music.

Probably great live, a little uninspiring recorded. Good background music.

Interesting, but I won't listen to this again.

Not a bad album at all. With dancing shoes on, I could see the rating being boosted significantly. Generally, this is not the music I gravitate to, but it's fun, light, and jubilant.

Maybe if I had one to many cervesas I would enjoy this more.

Ok but not my genre

people really didn't have a lot going on back then huh

Not for me

Just another Latin American album.

Albern

Not for me. 1/5

Listened to this album. Very well played by skilled musicians, obviously. Not too big a fan of latin music, though. Nice for one song, if not on a beach with a pina colada in hand.

wtf. why is this even on the list.

0.7/5 I could listen to 1 track every now and then but the whole album just sounds the same to me. I can't knock the sound quality and the performance, especially for 1958. It sounds better than some music released today but this is not an album I would want to listen to again.

Sorry but truly truly not my thing

Didn’t listen

Make it stop. I'm sure this works great live, at a party with amazing food and drinks and atmosphere. Streamed off Spotify it was a punish to finish.

This kind of music is difficult for me to listen to. I occasionally like it when the musicians of Buena Vista Social Club are playing, but in general those high frequency instruments just make my ears hurt. Also, I cannot differentiate this album from literally any other in this genre, so I don't know based on what the author picked it to be on the list.

My experience of mambo prior to this was courtesy of Lou Bega's Mambo No.5!! This album contains all the other mambos!! Not for me.

Sorry not for me

ehhh, not really my kind of thing. wouldn't listen to again

Not for me

I just can get into it.

not mine at all

1 - I probably would’ve left it at the first song if I wasn’t doing this album, some tracks were okay but not enough for me to even remember which ones

this is not for me. sounded like I was stuck in a salsa class.

Didn't feel the mania or much like dancing. Same song on repeat for 95% of the album. Maybe this makes the list for being an early Spanish group making it to mainstream? Not for me...one time listen...adios amigos. 1.2

It's fine background music I guess. I'm not that into mambo and I'm never really going to take it seriously unless I'm in a foreign country looking to dance. It's fine for a single listen but nothing I'll come back to. Every song sounds pretty similar regardless of who is involved. I've heard of Tito Puente as likely the most famous mambo artist but I'm not really sure what he does to differentiate himself. 1.40 stars

pa estar full chilling d locos

I can appreciate that this is considered a classic of Latin music, and Tito Puente’s reputation speaks for itself. The musicianship is tight, the rhythms are energetic and you can absolutely hear why this would have packed dance floors in the late 50s. It just is not for me. Across a full listen, I found it repetitive and struggled to stay engaged. The percussion is impressive and relentless, but without much variation in mood or structure it started to blur together. I can admire the technical skill and cultural importance, but personally it did not connect. I am sure in the right setting, maybe live or in a social environment, this music would come alive. As an album to sit and listen to from start to finish, it did not hold my attention.

Not my thing, definitely can't listen to 2+ hours of it

Irrelevant.

Schwungvoll

Absolute garbage. Spanish music that was a hit 60 years ago like they knew something smh. Put them on some tame Impala and they would loose their shit

Not for me.

NO - latein-amer. Tanzmusik

If I never listened to this album and I died I’ll be fine

I feel bad but I couldn't finish this album. It's really not my thing. My sincerest apologies to both Tito Puente and also his (very talented) orchestra.

DNF. I wouldn’t be mad if it was on in the background, but I had a very hard time purposefully listening to it.

This is not me, 12 songs with Latin American dance music. Did listen all songs but after 2 songs already feeling bored and sleepy. Too brainy and guitar-y for this.

Not my jam.

Men "oseriöst". Funktionell musik. #1 lite kul, vilket också är ett problem. Väcker inget i en. "Stereotyp" musik. #2 kommer låtarna vara omöjliga att skilja åt? Antagligen. #3 en fortsättning på #2? Jaha, nähä. #4 lite långsammare? #5 joråsåatt #6 "Bäst" hittills, men kommer aldrig lyssna igen. Instrumental.

Trumpeterna ger mig cancer i öronen.

Inkvoterat.

Hahahahaha

every song sounds the exact same. that the song it sounds like is trash!

Not my vibe

Not as good as Hulkamania. Whatcha gonna do, brother?

What is this and why is it on the list?

Thrilla in Manilla

not feeling it - dnf

Great sounds really, but it’s just unfortunate I don’t understand all the music, it is a very danceable album don’t get me wrong, just wasn’t a favorite album and I don’t think I would just put this album on to listen to it. But I’m glad I did listen love the sounds and it is not a bad record at all, just not one for me.

Cuban Jazz? It's an odd orchestral collection. It's fine for what it is, but it's not what I want.

Samba. Not arsed.

I'm sure it's good for what it is - who knows, perhaps not? - but this was borderline unlistenable. If only it were background music - alas, the brass is overpowering and obtrusive, with a hysterical quality that pierces through to your innermost core. One of my least favourite offerings from this app.

Not too keen on foreign music, so-to-speak

Well this is not my genre at all - couldnt finish. I know people are allowed to have opinions and a love of different music, but how did this make the list...come on there are better albums out there. Oh well I am sure this will also get 5's. My rating 1

Sorry das kann ich nicht ertragen

rumba bachata... no me mola... chacha chaaa

I can’t finish listening. I feel like I’m in my own personal hell! It was bearable for one very long song but I can’t anymore.
