Reviews (page 7 of 8)

Good but not my thing. Very long and sounded repetitive. BUT I bet live is great

Before seeing the cover of this I assumed it was going to be some mad 80/90s dance rave album. Oh how wrong I was. I did really like it and on the whole it's great fun and would love to go to a proper dance party with it live, however, I also felt I knew exactly what the whole album would be from the first couple of minutes, and I was right!

Definitely a fun listen!

This is Latin American jazz. I don't know or listen to enough Latin America jazz to distinguish if this is great or not. It's fine but I wouldn't choose to listen to this.

I mean, it's fine, but who cares? The brass and percussion are dead tight but I can't speak to why this is innovative or what makes it a must-hear. Appropriate for some settings, I suppose but not that many.

Tito Puente is apparently the king of latin jazz, but it's a lot less memorable than I thought it would be. I'm not sure who the singer is, but she is definitely a plus to this album, her warm voice really suits the atmosphere of the album. For the rest, I really have heard better latin jazz

3.5/5. Very enjoyable while it lasted but not my expertise 🤷‍♂️

Ágætis dillibossaplata, sem minnti mig þó óþarflega mikið á af hverju ég get ekki dansað cha cha cha.

Groovy album with some cool songs. Was pleasantly surprised

Fun to listen to! Would love to hear more.

The percussionist in me appreciates the marimba and vibes and timbales, but I’m always so-so on Latin jazz.

Nice to listen whilst cooking

This guy's a legend, and if I liked this kind of music he'd get 5 stars, but I'm not that into mambos

Pretty good mambo music.

Atmospheric

First time hearing the album. I have heard to Tito Puente, but was not familiar with the music. I definitely enjoyed it. Not something I would listen to outside of this list though. Still it has a great sound and puts you in a good mood. 3/5

Ojojoj! Miami! Någonstans i Spanien!

Another fun Latin album - all trumpets, all the time.

Good example of Caribbean music

Suave and catchy songs, don’t know enough about the genre to really say how good it is but it’s a nice listen

What the hell. Why did I enjoy this so much?! Twas very long though.

This album makes me wish I could move my hips & salsa dance! (I absolitelu cannot) Fun listen!

just fun

Very upbeat. Mambo.

I appreciate the album and feel good nature of the album. Not always my style, but good nonetheless. Unfortunately, it does trigger me with that one tiktok song which I have grown to not like. But that's not a fault of the album 3.5

Fun album with fun sounds for daaaaaancing. Might not listen again casually but still found it enjoyable! Favourite Tracks: El Cayuco, Saca Tu Mujer

This album is mambo in a Latin club. Not very dynamic, but a good time.

Deeeeeceeent

All the tracks kinda blur into one, but this was fun! If it were playing at a party I would want to get up shake my hips

Maybe if I gave it more time, my rating would rise higher. Clearly Tito and his band are talented and there's some good stuff in here. But it sounds a bit dated. Would I still expect to hear it in any sunny vacation getaway resort? Of course, all day every day. But will I turn to this when I'm not sipping mai tai's on the beach? I doubt it.

This was some fun dance music. It was well-orchestrated and well-recorded. Mambo's not really my sort of thing. I mean this music was written to be danced to and well... I'm not much of a dancer. Still I can hear the talent on these tracks.

Not my favourite genre, but appreciate it is good for what it is. Does take me back to travelling and experiencing this music for the first time

A nice sound, but it gets a bit samey after a while.

This is pretty hard to argue with. I don't know that I would put this on any old time, but it's some pretty feel good stuff that isn't tied to any trendy junk.

Tito Puente is one of the great band leaders and Mambo is such a fun music. It's like danceable jazz music.

As far as I can judge it seems to be well played and it was somewhat fun to have playing. But aside from a one time listen I'm just not really interested in this kind of music and won't actively listen to it again.

Definitely not one to just put in an listen to. Great stuff in the right context....and if you know how to dance.

Zero reference of this, but it sounds great.

nice upbeat latin jazz. Percussion heavy, cool vibraphones. Good vocals. Very nice music to enjoy during dinner. Wouldn't consider it a "Must Listen" or essential in any way but definitely enjoyable. 3 .5 stars

Quite alright but not my style.

Not something I’m likely to listen to often, but I can appreciate it’s importance within it’s genre.

Never listened to mambo before but this is nice and upbeat and very catchy. Definitely makes you want to dance.

solid fun album. would listen again

the best selling latin dance album of all time remains Tito Puente's Dance Mania. Recorded in November and December of 1957 and released in early 1958, Dance Mania was the first recording for a major label (RCA) to feature Cuban dance rhythms without relying on commercial gimmicks or jazz constructs. It also was the first popular mambo album to feature vocals sung in Spanish—recreating the sound heard at New York's Palladium dance hall in the 1950

Starts great, but then seems to slow down/get worse as the album progresses.

A fun album will be nice tobplay at a bbq in the summer

This is my first experience with a Tito Puente Album. I like it, it's definitely something I would throw on to clean the house to.

i actually really liked the sound!

The only mambo album on the list is a quite mediocre one.

Can not find this album anywhere! Three star rating as an average.

This album-a-day is great for many reasons but one of the best reasons I do this is to get albums like this one - a genre I would never in a million years select on my own. Tito Puente was a bit before my time and probably is more known by people my age from him being a suspect in the shooting of Montgomery Burns in the Simpsons (NOT GUILTY ha) so it's good to get the real education here. I'm not a dance fan nor will I ever be a big listener of this genre but it is/was far more interesting than I'd have given it credit for - complex as hell rhythms that are still accessible and catchy. I definitely vastly prefer the instrumental passages as I don't often focus much on vocal/lyrics. This is definitely both a fun record and a good one for background (working as I listen now). A surprise 3 stars for this rock fan (although I'm sure deserving of much higher for those more attuned to big band / swing). 7/10 3 stars.

This album is very loud and not very subtle. Found other better stuff albums him though.

Delicinha.

Like a Cuban salsa album. Well entertaining, recognized Mombo Gozon. Album reminded me of GTA Vice City, although this album wasn't actually on the game 😂 3/5

Not my usual thing at all but very nice to listen to and chill out with a different vibe

It was OK.

An enjoyable upbeat listen.

Good at what it is but never going to put it on intentionally.

Not bad

Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: Cuando Te Vea (mostly to remember the album exists) Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Super fun listen, never really listened to latin music that seriously before. Sounds a lot like other latin music to me, but that's not a bad thing.

Interesting salsa music, but an entire album is too juch

3/5 just ok

Ok, don’t usually listen to Latino music.

Wen mambo

This man and his band just ooze talent, it's unfortunate that it's not for me.

A great album for a time and place. Wish I could be at that time and place right now.

Fun album. It doesn't jump out at me.

Fun album, but I can only take so much mambo music.

i feel like i need to either go on a cuban vacation or be a contestant on the 1970's Dating Game.

I had to walk through a rain storm while I was listening to this album. The rhythm helped me keep my pace in turbo

Fun album... not particularly grabbing for me though.

Very nice. Sounds great couldn't listen to whole album at once

Fine, but not a genre I have any interest in

It's alright. I can appreciate it but nothing I'd listen to on my own. Good background music. I'm no salsa dancer but I'm sure this would be fun to dance to.

It’s salsa music! I enjoy it.

Good fun.

@@@. Great rhythms and horns. Not something I'd listen everyday, but brings happy mood.

It's good for what it is. I am not a dancer. Therefore it is not for me.

I would have to be in the mood

Classic cumbia vibes - banger

Fun Dance

Very cool - drums!

I listened to 3-4 tracks, but this isn't really a genre I seek out. Still, I appreciated what I heard. Giving this a 3 simply because I have a neutral opinion.

1958. Key Songs: El Cayuco, Mambo Gozon

I liked this album a lot. Music like this always makes me want to dance and lifts my spirits. Even though I really liked it, I'm only giving it 3 stars because nothing about it really stood out in my brain as particularly special. I wouldn't be able to hum a single tune from it, frankly. They all kinda blend together in my mind.

Fine, but not really my cup of tea. I liked it better than Buena Vista Social Club though, which has a similiar vibe.

Lift music

Härlig salsa från 50-talet!

What a lively album fo dancing!

Not my thing but it's fun! A good example of something where musical tastes have changed since it was made. Oh god, are people going to be saying that about nu metal in 50 years?

This was a nice leisure suit album

Enjoyable enough and would be great at a part or wedding. Hard to imagine this is 1991 as it sounds more like a 1961 soundtrack to a film

Good for what it is, not my cup of tea.

Well, it’s really good at what it does but it’s not anything that I find is variable or listen to able

idc about salsa it was inoffensive but definitely not mania

Two 1950's albums in a row. I guess i liked the swing more than the bossa nova/samba rhythms. Would have been interesting if I got them in a different order would I have given Louis Prima a lower score? This was not memorable for me

Pretty boring. Music was not good enough to overcome not understanding lyrics.

Sure! But why this over all the identical sounding things that auto played right after?

very cha cha cha (chachasabrina mentioned..? beatles fans yk who im talkin abt.. maybe.. (if u dont know.. idk man i cant xplain it))

Made me hungry and put me in the mood for a Margarita. Honestly probably the first time I have listened to Latin Music outwith a restaurant or bar setting, I must say, in the car driving to work it feels out of place. I can appreciate that if you dig this genre it’s a banger , even I recognise some of the songs but it’s just not in my register, I would never put this on so it has limited value for me. 2

2.5/5.

Would be fine as background music in a central American restaurant or market. But that's about it for me. He gets 2 stars just for a good cameo in the simpsons. And it's well played and well recorded. But musically I'm not bothered about this genre at all.

This is #day620 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… hey mambo, mambo italiano, oh wait, wrong one. Anyway, how about some mambo on a rainy April Monday afternoon? I'm not really sure about that. I mean, the record is fun and all that ("El Cayuco" even rang a bell from hell knows where), but I'd never choose to put it on if it weren't for the challenge. Let it be a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day621.

listend only few songs

This was fun!

For that one time you are hosting a salsa party…

I loved it until I didn't. Seems like a double album and wasn't expecting it to go on and on.

★★½

I’d be happy dancing to it, but it goes on way too long with too little variety to listen to.

i didn’t like all the trumpets and i though it was a bit repetitive

When I worked at a concert venue, we often hosted Latin American parties where girls looking pretty much like the one on this album cover would sway their hips, arms, and breasts for hours to songs like the ones I heard here. This record is perfect for that kind of entertainment. It's hard to enjoy listening to it in any other setting. Firstly, every song sounds like the same thing — it's exactly what you imagine when you hear the phrase "Caribbean music". Secondly, you really can't imagine what to do with this music outside of dancing: maybe sipping Cuba Libre, but then again, I'd prefer to do that while lying under a palm tree, which isn't always within reach. That said, it's all well-recorded, and Tito Puente is a recognized master of the genre, and his musicians are no slouch, but I quickly grew tired of the album. Perhaps I'll have to listen to it again during a beach vacation.

Ok but just not my thing

Perky in a Latin American way. Probably great if you’re a Salsa dance person. But would not listen otherwise.

I wanted to like this one, but it falls into the same set of unfortunate reasons that I don't as all the other Latin-American albums I've heard so far. Notably: I don't understand the language, which immediately makes it harder for me to connect with; I don't really like the sound of bongos or similarly sounding hand drums; the rythem is both too repetitive and too "light" and doesn't have much of an impact on me; While I often enjoy trumpet the way it's used here to sorta punctuate the drums is probably one of the least interesting ways to use the trumpet to me. I don't remember a single track, it probably doesn't help that the names are a language I don't know, but also they just kind of all bled together and didn't stand out much Standouts - 2/5

Classic Old school Spanish jazz band sounds just like you might expect from Ricky Riccardo on the Lucille Ball show. Perfect for Salsa dance classes or classy dining/dancing experience. Enjoyable on special dressy occasions perhaps.

A pleasant and jaunty listen.

I'm not a dancer and certainly not this style. Despite that it was interesting to hear some lively Cuban style music. Not unpleasant but not one I'll be adding to my playlist.

Well, it's mambo, and it's good enough for what it is, but it's also 45 minutes of basically the same thing to my uncultured ears. I got everything I was going to get out of it by track 3, so it was a bit of an endurance challenge.

I just.. don't care for this. Not a 1 because it shows good music, but I don't want to listen to it.

Mambo kann gefallen, warum von einem Amerikaner?

This might be good. The rhythm sections feels like it's nice, but I was trying to listen to it vaguely quietly and the trumpets are so load and obnoxious that I hated it. There was a track with a marimba or something on there and it was much nicer, but still their were awful brass stabs in there. With music of this age the brass always comes across as horribly distorted to me. I kind of assumed it was due to the earlier microphones and struggling to get the gain right, but they're so loud in the mix that it makes me think they genuinely loved that sound.i do not.

like fine i bopped a lil

cute, no thx

Not a big fan of latin jazz, and I found this boring. 2.5 stars

Not for me

Not exactly my thing.

after some songs i was really annoyed and i think it’s because of the trumpets

Catchy but it just keeps going and going.

Can’t deny this is great music of its type but it’s far from anything I can listen to and enjoy. Because it’s obviously highly regarded I cannot slag it off. Just let’s say there’s plenty more music in the world which I cannot slag that I relate to. 2/5 27/12/25

All mambo sounds the same

Good fun dance album, not my go to music at any time, but good.

Bit much for me

Didnt really want to dance to this, unless I was in Nando's

"Hipster Nightclub in 1955 Music: Part III"

I know nothing about latin music, even less about this style so I am going to refrain from giving much thought. NR/10

Good fun album

It was ok. Not an album I would listen to in full usually.

Nando's music. Pretty fun but just a novelty really.

Will this album ever end? I'm not sure anymore. I recognized a few of these songs as often used in movies to be like "this is mariachi music!" It's a little too repetitive for me and I think I need to accept I just don't like trumpet that much. Cool mallet work in a few songs though!

It's... fine?

Not as good as Señor Burns

nice background music

I'm sure this is once again a me problem, but I mostly had a very hard time telling one song from the next. One is fun, 12 is a long time (almost) completely at one tempo.

It's fine I guess

Not a bad album but Latino jazz is not really my thing.

Tried listening, wasn’t for me, it didn’t sound bad or anything but didn’t really capture me like other albums have

4/10 How do I grade this? It means nothing to me and doesn't move me, but it isn't bad either. It's just not in my spectrum of music that I have reference for. I find it largely repetitive and unremarkable, but I expect that is because I'm a philistine when it comes to this type of music. I wonder what Tito Puente would grade the Strokes?

Well...not really into this stuff

bit weird

It is what it is and I’m in no way qualified to judge it really

Wonderful dance music, IF I DANCED THE MAMBA. Just not going to work listening to a full album, particularly when I don't understand the words.

Like an Austin Powers soundtrack.

It was quite challenging to find translated lyrics for the tracks, so my thoughts will be largely based on the music alone --which is fine. I do think the music somewhat struggles to keep itself inventive as the album goes on. As a collection of presumably dance/mambo tracks? Perfectly serviceable. But I hoped for more as an entire album.

Like it's fun, but I'm not exactly itching to listen to it. Nor am I going to go back. Hong Kong Mambo is pretty good, a little heavy on the marimbas but interesting. 2/5 stars.

Rating: 2.3 Music for a bygone era where people went out and danced for fun instead of doing exercises like the one I’m doing right now. I mean it’s fine but if you listen to this in your free time you’re probably pretty weird.

I spent too much time thinking about what to say about this album when all I have to say is the following: I find the middle part to be repetitive and boring and the rest are just decent mambo tracks. Maybe a great album for mambo lovers, but not for me. I wish I could say more, but being an album of just mambo, I don't really have anything to say.

I fear the bastardisation and dilution of Latin jazz music, via a myriad network of beach bars, has permanently impacted by ability to impartially critique exemplars of the genre. Of which I guess this is one. But because salsa music (not unlike samba), to my admittedly untrained ear(s) is built round the narrowest of musical variation, it's near impossible to discern the supposedly good from the banal. Of the ones that stood out, 'Hong Kong Mambo' took my attention immediately with its prominent marimba sound that sounded different and also nostalgic (Monkey Island soundtrack). Despite its dogged adherence to type, Tito brings a real infectious energy and crispness to the rhythms and instrumentation. I'm not a salsa historian, unless you're talking sauce, but I understand this album to be the first studio quality recording of salsa and mambo. But if you want my advice lose at least two trumpets. I appreciated some of it, but it's difficult to love.

Sadly didn't find myself dancing a lot to "Dance Mania", partially because I find this genre of music very vexing. Probably need a few more margs to get into it.

It’s very well done, and the orchestration is great … but it’s very boring after the first two tracks. You could have it on shuffle and you’d be none the wiser.

A mostly instrumental album with some Spanish lyrics here and there. Had me bobbin' my head side to side at my desk. To me, a lot of the tracks blended together. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes it hard to pick out favorite tracks if I'm not looking at the track listing as I'm listening. So much that I didn't notice that the album was over and it had switched to suggested songs. Easy listening and fun. No complaints!

This was a fun lil mambo album. It was nice to enjoy in the background, but I don’t see myself going back to it unless it’s playing while I’m at a Cuban restaurant. No favorite track this time, as they all kind of blended together for me. But it was still a nice change of pace!

The music you hear in a Breaking Bad montage when someone is cooking or selling Blue Sky

2.4 1x decent but not my genre

One or two Salsa Songs are fine for me, but a whole album is too repetitive for me

An album only known for being in the book, its quite a random listen. It's a pretty clean mambo album that is rated low solely for its little known significance.

Overall score: 3,4/10

Typa shit u here in a Mexican restaurant. Good background music but quite hard to enjoy when most songs use the same instruments and vocals and you can’t understand the language. Overall: 4/10 if I was Spanish speaking 5/10

As one half of UK Salsa Super Group, Houmous & Chutney I know a thing or two about what Tito was trying to achieve! 2.4 3/15 Three D Mambo

Rating: 2 Mexican elevator music.

No idea what was said but this was a long 38 minutes. Didn't care for much of it. 2/5

Reminds me of Frank Costanza! Not my type of music 2/5

A relaxing listen

2 - Bore fest

Tito Puente has well known tunes, I don’t think this compilation captures them

I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more if I were on an all-inclusive holiday in Spain with a cold pint of lager in my hand. It's exactly what I'd expect to hear emanating from the poolside bar, manned by an olive-skinned bloke who somehow manages to look simultaneously bored and like he has the best job in the world. It doesn't quite hit the same when I'm sitting in front of a computer working. Not offensive, quite pleasant background music, but I can't say I can remember a single track, and I wouldn't knowingly put it on again.

I'm not keen on the style of this album. The songs on it are insignificant. "Dance Mania" reminds me of those awful Aldi adverts(Those in the UK know what I'm on about). The singing is really good despite that. A few tracks of this album make a neat novelty EP. 2 stars for "Dance Mania".

Part of me wants to say I just wasn’t in the mood for this, and the other wonders if this simply isn’t my kind of music.

Fun i suppose. This is the kind of music you need to learn to dance to, to truly enjoy it. Would go well on a good sunny weather with a drink in hand. Tracks sound all pretty alike. Decent background music. Dont hate it but neither enjoy it with all my heart.

Good fun and impossibly tight. I got the idea after a song or two though - great music for dancing and enjoying yourself, but not massively engaging as an album to experience. Is this the best example of a mambo/Latin dance album? Favourite tracks: Llego Mijan, other songs here and there - they're all the fkn same...

Not for me thanks

Hong Kong Mamba.

2 out of 5. Fun music for certain occasions.

That’s a pretty specific music genre. Of a time for sure but…not a fan.

Some good songs, but they blend together. Sounds like background music in a movie. Cool trumpets

Not my jam.

Too much

Mambomania. I'm not convinced that this genre is for me...... yet.... Give me some incredible bongos instead.

Very nice if you're into 1950s Latino dance music. I am not into 1950s Latino dance music.

# 409 : When your only claim to fame is that you are in this list…

It's like so incredibly cheesy but stupidly fun but also there's NOTHING that isn't evident from a 30 second snipet

Fine, but nothing I added to my playlist.

technically proficient but repetitive and i got bored

Well, it's another foreign language album, although this one is a lot more fun to listen to. However, that being said, it gets too repetitive where all the songs start to sound the same. So -2 stars for foreign language stuff, and another -1 star for being boring. 2/5

Pleasant, but sometimes being pleasant just isn't enough. There was actually quite a lot of talented and enjoyable musicianship in this, and I feel bad marking it low, but I was mainly bored, and relieved when it was finished.

Listened Before? N A fun Latin dance album. Didn't spend a bunch of time on this one but it was good background music. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: El Cayuco

Well, these guys are having a party! That said, this isn't an album I think I'd play much, and I'm not in a positions to say why this is considered an album I needed to listen to!

Well I listened to this from start to finish. I would never want to hear it again, enough Mambo to last me a lifetime. It started off okay, but I rapidly realised this was just one very long 30 minute song with a few breaks for no reason, as nothing really changed from one track to the next. It wasn't horrid enough for 1 star, but there's no way I would consider this deserving more than 2 stars.

It is fine for what it is, but this genre and style aren't really that engaging or to my taste.

It's not bad... it's just not for me.

2.5 alright songs, spanish

I find it incredibly difficult to give this album a rating. It's probably very good but offered absolutely nothing for me to get excited about. It felt like one big 'movement' or 'suite', with almost no variation between tracks. Loud horns, a strong vocalist with real oomph in their delivery and groovability are common features of almost all these tracks but there are too few scenarios where I would consider busting a move to this record. Overall score: 4.7/10

Lively and invigorating transforming to clanky and grating after a while of listening.

Sounds like the bits in the Batman series with Adam West when they’d punch people and the cartoon words would come up

It’s the same song over and over and you can’t tell me otherwise. I like this kind of music, don’t get me wrong. But an entire album of the same is just ughhhh

It definitely doesn't deviate from its sound. That would probably be a good thing for somebody who liked the sound. 2/5

I don’t know when this album would be played

This sounded good but I really didn't get much out. I like some salsa music but this one really didn't do much for me. I went on a run while listening to it and kind of zoned out.

i mean it was fine but it was just a bunch of non-offensive samba jazz music. if it did anything interesting melodically i’d be inclined to rate it higher but almost every song sounded the same so it gets 2 stars

Happy Mexican tunes

Not my thing. Each song sounds pretty similar.

A great album if you're holding a salsa event id think, not sure its an essential album to listen to. Stopped listening halfway and when I came back I had no idea where I'd got up to, this album is very much a 'sound' as opposed to trying to do anything specific with the tracks. All in all it was easy enough to get to but don't need to hear again.

Yeah, why not. Never would've chosen to listen to anything like this without this list. Not sure I will again Don't dislike it, but never going to think, I'll just throw some dance mania on 2

1. Who knew Tito Puente was American? 2. He will always be known for his role on The Simpsons. "They robbed the school of Tito!" 3. It's not my jam.

p37. 1958. 2 stars Guaranteed to make any hip twitch. Well done of its kind, but not my thing. Unlikely to revisit.

Reminds me of when I lived in Colombia where the dance club across the street would blast this music as loud as their speakers could handle. My front door would shake

Not my kind of things but it was ok

124/1001

Didn’t finish. Pretty fun but honestly would only listen to this again if it was playing in a Mexican restaurant.

Cha, cha, cha baila music. Dance Mania is trumpet heavy salsa throughout. Best number is (xylophone) Hong Kong Mambo because there’s no trumpet and it’s different from the other songs. Enjoyed the listen during an elliptical session, album comes in at (2.2*s)

This album is groovy but all the songs are very similar. It would be great while cooking arepas or sitting in a taqueria but didn't make me want to jump up and dance. It's an enjoyable listen, very upbeat, passionate, a bit slanderous. In terms of Latin music, this is a more accessible and fun album but mambo isn't really for me. I can say, it is well recorded and has a great vibe for coming out in the 50's. Though, I feel like this was just ticking the "World Music" box for the list.

Mexican hotel lobby music

Only partly listened, not for me

I didn't need a full album of this. One or two songs and you get the idea.

It seems happy, so that's good. But I never connected with anything here and will never play it again.

I mean, I guess it's fine or whatever.

Redundant.

Thought I’d enjoy it more than I did.

Fun samba but a little samey.

I found it somewhat enjoyable, but also a bit outside my familiarity. I might need to give Mambo a bit more of a listen in general.

I tried, but Latin American dance music doesn't suit me. I do listen to a bit of Argentinian tango from time to time. I'm particularly a fan of the Gotan Project. As I don't dance the mambo, I find it a bit tiring in the long run. 2/5

The crowd goes mild

Congas and timbales. This type of music usually bores me. This one did too. Good musicians though. Vocals are stupid 2 stars

Meh, not really for me

I wouldn't say this is bad but the language barrier, for me personally, really prevents this from being "something you need to hear before you die". I know it's ignorance on my part not knowing Spanish but I know there are millions more like me. Musically its really good! Classic Mambo/Guaracha music! The language barrier just brings it down for me. Struggling with rating between a 2 and 3. Since I know I'll probably never listen to it again I think I'll go 2 out of 5.

No habla mambo

I feel the same about this Latin big band music as I do about bluegrass and metal: it all tends to blend together when passively listening but would be a blast to hear in person, get a lil' sloppy and dance to etc. It's hard to tell if this music is a dime-a-dozen or if Mr. Puente was truly a pioneer in his genre at the time. Or maybe his music was so influential that it was played everywhere and became cliched. Idk. Seeing that he's won a bunch of awards, it's probably me that's out of touch and can't appreciate his expertise without context. Would rather hear this stuff live but it falls flat for me on 21st century speakers.

people who like this music are gonna like this album and people who don't, won't

I would never choose to listen to this.

Not mine.

poopy twisting instrument bad.

This is very much the kind of thing you’ll like if you like this kind of thing. For the rest of us (including we many non-dancers) this is no better than just okay, of interest and to be appreciated only for what it is, precisely.

Didn’t do it for me

This was fun - passing a Friday work morning pleasantly enough. Nothing really jumped out at me, but it works as an album and a mood, and probably sounded quite exciting when it was released.

take a glass champagne and come to our yacht, where we wear diamonds and secretly cheat on our spouses

Ok music I guess. Never listening to this restaurant lobby ahh music again tho

not bad... sounds like something you'd hear in a Mexican restaurant

this made me dance my dick off. the rest of the customers in frankie and bennys didn't really appreciate my style.

2.0. Good but not my thing

Basic jazz albumas

I'm sure the lyrics are meaningful and witty, but I can't understand them so the rest of my meaningful and witty review is in another language in protest.

To start, this album is wonderfully recorded and mixed. It honestly sounds amazing considering it was released in 1958. And I think Tito and his band do a fantastic job. I'm not trying to downplay their technical abilities, because they are all very skilled. But I find that this album follows the philosophy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". And really, nothing about this is broken. So there isn't anything to fix. But you can try new things, and not alter any of what was already good with a project. This album does not do that. It starts off strong, but by track 4 or 5, I was already feeling fatigued. This album has one sound, and one sound only. A one trick pony of some sorts. It's not bad music, and most of the songs are short, but it doesn't make for an enjoyable listen all the way through when it is hard to differentiate one song from the next. I think the only song that really stuck out to me was "Estoy siempre junto a ti", because it slows things down and takes a mellower approach compared to the rest of the album. This feels like another one of those albums in the list of 1001 that is less on the list because it is some big hit, or a darling with the critics, but more so because it allows entry into a genre most people don't have experience with.

Hei, Estoy Siempre Junto a Ti oli mieleenpainuva biisi.

This was a different proposition ! It reminded me of my Mum & Dad practising their dance steps. It was alright to listen to for that reason but personally, not something I’d choose so 2*

Hmm... kind of nice background/elevator music but I don't think I'd sit down and listen to it.

I thought it was super fun but it’s not really a listen through album for me
