Reviews (page 6 of 14)

The Bends is one of those albums that really encapsulates what makes Radiohead absolutely incredible. Fake Plastic Trees is such a hauntingly beautiful song and never fails to make me extremely emotional. The entire album is like that, fully encapsulating ideas and 'vibes' and bringing life to them in a way you don't see from many bands, including on this list. It's the rare band that can truly capture magic like Radiohead can.

Tops the first album! Great rock music. Classic.

Really liked it!

Classic. Solid 5. I was super excited when this album came up for listening and enjoying it through the years but it had been a long time since listening straight through. Still finding new things to appreciate about it and see its influence on other groups.

Yet another classic of the 90's

damn, "male manipulator music" truly popped off with this one.

One of my favourite albums of all time...

Radiohead's first 3 albums are all incredible and music I listen to regularly. Best song - Just (though fake plastic trees is a very close second)

killer, historic, album

Top 100 of all time. One of the best bands of all time.

Got it as a christmas present in 1995 (or maybe 1996?), one of the first albums i ever owned, and haven't stopped listening to it since. soundtrack to my adolescence, for better or worse.

I feared that my affection for the later Radiohead albums would taint my view of the slightly earlier catalogue, however I forgot how much of a BANGER this is. They can do no wrong. Just is a certified MTV2 classic. Just brilliant.

Powerhouse of an album with not a bad track in sight. Such an anomalous band, nothing like them before or since in my book.

Important and transitional album from Pablo Honey to OK Computer (also on this list). The production and spacey-but-still-guitar-laden sound are on another level from their previous album and start to give the band their current well-known identity. The lyrics are like first- or third-person fables, somewhat blunt and overly angsty but again working toward the more abstract, sweeping commentary that was to come. Not my favorite Radiohead album but still a great one.

All killer, no filler

Not much to say here, it's radiohead

5/7, a perfect score

Been a while since I listened to this, im a massive radiohead fan but havent been close to their early work, this was an amazing rediscover.

Great album, love hearing how vulnerable the vocals sound sometime. Also the guitar riffs are solid

One of the worst lazy eye albums but still a 5

Street Spirit is a 5* track in itself.

Coassic

Great Album.

Forgotten how much I love this album.

Went so crazy

Great compilation of Radiohead rock songs

A classic

Terrific album - one of Radiohead’s best.

I’ve loved High and Dry and Fake Plastic Trees since the 90’s. Always been favorites of mine. Fake Plastic Trees especially means a lot to me. Oh, Just is good too, when they still had that rock guitar solo! I remember that one. And My Iron Lung! The rest I don't remember as well, but it's growing on me! Funny enough, I feel like the title track now just sounds very Britpop. "I wish it was the 60s. I wish we could be happy." Man that was very much the 90s sentiment wasn't it? Now we wish it was the 90s... This is at least a 4.5... this is phenomenal record!

SO -- Street Spirit, Just, My Iron Lung

Another banger! This is when Radiohead became Radiohead!

For my money this is their best album. I find that Radiohead spans from "this is fine" to "shut the heck up you pretentious ass", but for whatever reason The Bends absolutely clicks with me and I genuinely think it's a masterpiece. The rest of their stuff can leave this list and this can stay.

One of my favorite albums of all time. Brings back so many memories. Had a great night listening to this.

Awesome album. Classic Radiohead

As a fan of Radiohead, I am biased, but this is one of the best alt-rock albums out there. ‘Planet Telex’, the title track, ‘High And Dry’, Fake Plastic Trees’, ‘Just, ‘My Iron Lung’, ‘Street Spirit’. All recognizable songs from this album. That’s over half the tracklisting. Can you really argue with that? (yeah, but I guess I’m making a point)

This was the album where Radiohead moved from one-hit-wonder to being a force to reckon with. Everything after this came with a much greater freedom for self-indulgence. This was also the last guitar-based album from them, a sore point for some fans. When I was a contractor I did a job for a couple of months with someone who insisted on playing the first few tracks of this album, then skipping to Street Spirit, then back to the start again, over and over, all day long. The "missing" tracks have always felt fresher to me due to this and the first few I've heard so often I literally struggle for them to not just slip by my brain without even realising what I'm listening to. High and Dry starts up, then the next thing I know we're into Just and everything in between was a blur. It's a great album, not a perfect album like OK Computer, but not far off and the few dips in consistency can easily be ignored. As soon as I saw this come up I knew it was another 5-star rating, one that's definitely deserved.

An all time classic, one of my very favourite artists and perhaps their best collection of songs - although that is obviously far from certain. Was never going to be anything less than 5, but listening again reminded me why I love this band so much

Always been a banger

By the end of 1994, you'd have been forgiven for thinking that Radiohead were a one hit wonder at the tail end of their 15 minutes of fame. Suddenly The Bends comes out to prove everyone wrong. Not only had they created more great singles, but they've crated them into a near perfect album. Quite a leap from their humble debut of Pablo Honey. It's hard not to compare it to their later, earth-shattering work. But the truth is that this album holds up very well, especially when you're seeking some 90s nostalgia. This was the album that proved Radiohead are a force to be reckoned with.

Although Radiohead would come to be known for their more experimental and transcendent albums following it, The Bends is itself an engaging and substantially transcendent album. Radiohead just has a knack for getting you to feel something so deeply that you wouldn't expect to resonate so beautifully. The album is an incredibly cohesive project, and the tracks all flows together flawlessly. The guitar work and vocals are some of the finest of Britpop too. Great album to be gloomy to, but also great to just think and to vibe to. Standout tracks: [Nice Dream], My Iron Lung, Black Star, Street Spirit (Fade Out) ---------------------------------------- Individual Song Ratings: Planet Telex - Fantastic The Bends - Fantastic High and Dry - Fantastic Fake Plastic Trees - Fantastic Bones - Fantastic [Nice Dream] - Masterpiece Just - Masterpiece My Iron Lung - Fantastic Bulletproof... I Wish I Was - Fantastic Black Star - Masterpiece Sulk - Fantastic Street Spirit (Fade Out) - Masterpiece Rating Average: 4.3 Final Album Rating: 5

Fuck yeah, The Bends. I'm more of a playlist kind of guy, and I don't listen to a lot of albums from start to finish, but "The Bends" is one of them. A true classic.

Une preuve que Radiohead fait de l’excellent rock plus conventionnel. Un groupe hors pair

How is it possible I received this the day after Ok Computer? The list is really trying to make me like Radiohead and I think it has done it for me. This is of course much more straightforward than Ok Computer but is an excellent alt rock album. It is truly ahead of its time and while doing this list I’ve discovered I really hate 90s British rock but this doesn’t feel like that at all. Added to playlist: The Bends in a tight race with High and Dry

I listened to this so much as a teenager. Even though I don’t listen to it was much these days it’s seared into my brain.

Fake Plastic Trees still beautiful. (Nice Dream) is a great deeper cut. Some iconic riffs on Just and My Iron Lung. No real misses.

This is my favorite Radiohead album, because I'm basic like that. While I think that OK Computer is the obviously better album, I have a stronger connection to this one. "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" and "Just" are both in my Top 5 most played songs of all time according to Last.fm. Definitely a no skip album, just an amazing trip from the first to the last song.

Great album, second to Uzi

Not my favorite radiohead album but still a really great listen. Some truly excellent songs on this album. "Just" and "The Bends" lay down a strong rock background for slow emotional songs like "High and Dry" and "Fake Plastic Trees" to really shine. Many songs even fusing slow ballads with moments of overdriven pulsing rock like on "My Iron Lung". This album, like most radiohead, highlights both the moaning sadness and outright anger in Thom Yorke's voice and makes wonder "who hurt you dude"

5 stars don't even need to listen to confirm

Bom demais

Gillar extra mycket 'High and Dry', 'Fake Plastic Trees', 'Bullet Proof... I Wish I Was', 'Black Star'. Bästa låt: Street Spirit (Fade Out).

Phenomenal 90s rock

Zo goed, zo luisterbaar, en zeer invloedrijk.

A true classic which I have heard many times, but haven't listened to in one sitting in quite a while. Thoroughly enjoyable.

i can fucking soak in thom yorke's voice on sweet spirit (fade out) it fucks dick 10/10 would fuck dick again

I really enjoyed this album, i was really surprised by how much i did.

easy 5

I purchased Radiohead’s The Bends along with OK Computer at the same time after a co-worker and friend insisted I give Radiohead another chance. Strangely enough, both albums had the exact same effect on me during that first listen: I didn’t like them at all. But over time, something clicked. The more I revisited them, the more they revealed themselves to me, and now I can’t imagine not having either of them in my collection. Maybe Radiohead was simply ahead of its time musically, or maybe it just took me a while to mature in my musical appreciation. Either way, The Bends has become one of my all-time favorite albums, easily landing in my Top 15. It carries a heavy sense of melancholy throughout, but it’s completely absorbing. Once I put it on, I have to hear it all the way through.

my first review got me eating bread for breakfast

Reeeee radiohead

Still as good as I remember. One of my favorite albums of all time.

Sometime in the summer of 1995 I bought this album as part of a buy 3 for £20 offer (what the other 2 CDs were is lost to history) My mate Simon saw The Bends in my bag and said I’d just bought one of the greatest albums I’d ever hear. He wasn’t wrong I listened to this and OK Computer religiously for about 5 years until Kid A came along and the umbilical cord that drew me to Radiohead snapped So how does this sound with 20 years of dust on it? Still sounds amazing Not a bad moment let alone a bad track Flawless

After their initial generic alternarock debut album (albeit with a few cracking tracks) Radiohead find their form with The Bends. A great listen from start to finish and full of many tracks that stand out on their own. Happy to listen to again and again.

My very first concert was R.E.M., with a one-hit wonder opening for them. Or so me and my friend thought. We were walking through the hall of the arena and hearing this soaring voice. “What is this. It’s incredible. This is the ‘Creep’ band?” We hurried out into the main arena to our seats and watched Radiohead perform an incredible set. We were hooked, and I’ve been hooked since.

This is another easy 5. It may not be as artistically creative as the later albums but it is still a great listen front to back. Definitely inspired other bands such as Muse, Coldplay etc. Fav track: Fake Plastic Trees

Classic! One of my favs all time.

My face when I hear alternative music album The Bends by English rock group Radiohead. Last song best song.

Really enjoyable, impressed with how strong this album is from start to finish

When Radiohead wrote actual songs they were majestic, epic, peerless. Better than all their peers from Britpop, the band Coldplay and others would dream of being. Everything on here shows the absolute return to structure and melody that they later decided they were against when they drifted into sound and mood. Every track stands up to listening and all the grunge and indie pretenders on this list would dream they had nailed it the way Radiohead did it on this. An absolute masterpiece and deserving of its position in the all time lists.

What an album to return to the project with! Thank God. All killer no filler for me, this is an album I own a physical copy of so bias is definitely at play, but I think the music deserves the top rating.

Owned this one for a long time. Fave is Fade Out.

Baby's got the bends

Radiohead's first "all-time classic" in a career of at least 3 or 4 all-time classics.

The Bends aged remarkably well over 25 years. Six out of five stars.

Magnificent!

An amazing album, almost 0 boring songs.everything from till after my iron lung are BANGERS.fake plastic trees and just are some of my favourite songs.I just love the guitar work and the vocals. It’s just such good rock.

This is a great album, realized I added every track to the standouts list. I've been a big Radiohead fan for a long time and think this album doesn't always get the recognition some of the others do but was an incredible step forward that kept them from being considered one hit wonders and is a great bridge to what they would go on to do. I've got to give it a 5/5. Standout Tracks: Planet Telex, The Bends, High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees, Bones, (Nice Dream), Just, My Iron Lung, Bullet Proof ..... I Wish I Was, Black Star, Sulk, Street Spirit (Fade Out)

One of my favourite albums of all time. It's beautiful, punchy, sometimes ahead of it's time, and sometimes of the moment. While there's touches of art rock in here, I've always felt like Radiohead really felt like they had achieved all they could with traditional alt-rock on this album. I've listened to it thousands of times. It doesn't get much better.

A yes, Radiohead's magnum opus as the best British Guitar Band ever before their transition to the greatest band of all time as a prog rock band. Stellar listen start to finish, easy five stars.

This album will never fail to make me stop what I’m doing and just *listen*. To the guitars, the lyrics, to the wishes for something better. Tears are usually already flowing by the end of The Bends, and if not then definitely by High and Dry. It was also very cool to hear some OK Computer-style Radiohead in (Nice Dream). Street Spirit is an incredible end to an incredible album.

In my personal Top 10 - I was saving one of my 5s for this one :)

One of my favorites. I could Just Sulk about listening to it on repeat. Found it in college. I listened to In Rainbows first, and it led me to The Bends. My fav Radiohead album

One of the best albums of all time 10/10

Trying to find a fault with this album but I couldn’t manage - every track has its place - it never tapers - keeps the interest throughout the entirety of the perfect length of the album. To me this has always been part 1 of the trilogy of great consecutive Radiohead albums - this, Ok Computer and Kid A - and despite it’s hard to recognise what used to be the sound of Radiohead pre-Kid A pívot - it sounds on brand and still holds up even after all these years. I would like to diss on Radiohead but - definitely not regarding this record.

thought I didn't like that album but turns out it's very good!

So this album is perfect. Every track could have been a single. It’s my 4th favourite of theirs because, well, they’re Radiohead and they did a lot right. Street Spirit is the best closing track by a band that specialises in closing tracks. This whole album is a happy place. 10/5 Immerse Your Soul In Love

I'll just leave it to Thom to review it with some out of context lyrics: "Oh, it's the best thing that you've ever had The best thing that you've ever, ever had" 5/5

My favorite album by one of the best bands of the late twentieth and early twenty first century/. A band at the cusp of reinventing rock. It’s epic.

And if I could be who you wanted If I could be who you wanted All the time All the time My 43-year-old teenage angst comes crashing back like a tsunami. Searingly epic, downbeat then downright sad, spectacular and then 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)' Awesome, almost too good for coherent words. 5 / 5 stars.

The Best by Radiohead

A statement record if there was one, a significant improvement on Pablo Honey that showed the heights they would reach. Planet Telex, Just and My Iron Lung include some of my favourite guitar lines, while the more subdued High and Dry and Fake Plastic Trees in particular hinted at their sensitive side. They’ve made better albums since, but hard to argue that there are many better moments in their catalogue than the solo outro of Just or the haunting melodies of Street Spirit. First listen for some time and I’m reminded Black Star is a solid deep cut I’ve not revisited lately. It’s going on the playlist. They’ve not stumbled since, what a band.

Second 5*. Every song is a hit, very pleasant listen. Great rock.

Been a long time since i put this on, forgot what a slapper it is

It's The Bends

Amazing album 🥰

Great album that really works as a whole. Not listened to Radiohead much before as often put off by the vocals. But this is good stuff.

When I first got into Radiohead, the albums I gravitated to were Kid A and OK Computer; The Bends always seemed to be an odd one to me because of the lack of electronic effects and the brit rock sound. After a few listens, The Bends turned into a staple in my Radiohead album rotation. So many good tracks packed into this one, and the flow of the album is really nice. I think Pablo Honey suffered from some abrupt transitions, but they fixed that issue on their second studio release. The mix of acoustic and electric on this album is done well and keeps a very intimate tone throughout the record. Fave tracks: The Bends, High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees, Black Star

This is where it starts. Although I started listening to Radiohead with "OK Computer," it's this album that truly shows the band in their element. I know that the first album is good, and people play "Creep" to frigging death, but so much of the later works can be tracked directly to this album. Sound effects on "Planet Telex" can be found on the next album, "High and Dry" and "(nice dream)" both have the same kind of feel as "No surprises." I should listen to this album more. I know a number of these songs from concerts and bands covering them, but it's an album that should be more in my general rotation.

Earlier I had said I prefer The Bends to Ok Computer but I don't know anymore. This album is still amazing but it's not quite as innovative as their next one. Still, what it lacks in creativity it makes up for in rock edge, beautiful but despairing compositions, raw emotions, and great lyrics. Planet Telex, the title track, and Just show a bit of that rock edge and where they came from on their debut Pablo Honey. But then High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees, and Street Spirit show that more stripped-down and haunting motif that they kept perfecting from here. I listened to a podcast years ago that said the final version of Fake Plastic Trees came from a session with just Thom Yorke laying down his parts, where he was in tears by the end of it. And man, you can hear the anguish in that song - just beautiful, one of my all-time favorite songs. Street Spirit isn't far behind, gives me goosebumps every time. My Iron Lung is a bit in between, with a little bit more experimental feel to the guitars that they'd take further on Ok Computer. That's just the singles, but Bones, Black Star, and Sulk are other awesome rock pieces while Nice Dream and Bullet Proof...I Wish I Was are other amazingly beautiful softer pieces. A classic album with no holes - when Radiohead really became Radiohead.

By far my favorite Radiohead album, before they went off the electronica deep end (OK Computer is also great, but is more consistent with the direction they were headed). So many great songs: The Bends, High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees (one of my favorites - love how it builds), Nice Dream, Street Spirit (Fade Out). Not a bad track on the album. Easy 5.

My favourite Radiohead album. It's a transition album from their typical Britrock debut to the electronic rock of OK Computer, and it's a perfect balance.

I got Radiohead yesterday but I'm not mad.

nice dream 🥹

Incredible album!!

If Radiohead had stopped making music after The Bends, it would have been the defining album of 90's indie rock and European alternative rock. Instead they had to ruin this album's legacy by releasing OK Computer and Kid A... The Bends is the most accessible album of Radiohead's discography, and the tracks are mostly just great pop tunes written in recognizable structures. Like, really great pop tunes. Thom Yorke is not as sulky (heh, get it?) as on later records, and Greenwood's (the Johnny one) guitar demands full attention with every violent outburst. 'The Bends', 'High and Dry', 'Fake Plastic Trees', 'My Iron Lung', 'Black Star', and 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)' (best Radiohead tune ever?). This is an easy 5/5. And it might not be in my top 5 of Radiohead albums.

The Bends is not one of Radiohead’s greatest albums. And it’s still a 5/5. This band is just plain ridiculous.

This is a great great album. I think if all Radiohead sounded like this theyd be a lot more popular, but a lot less interesting overall

Shows how Radiohead was just about the best rock band before coming the best band, period (and artiest and most ambitious, too). Three classics  – "High and Dry," "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Black Star" – plus several other plus-plus tunes. The sound throughout is well-balanced and assertive, a band gaining full control of its ability and deploying it excellent effect.

Amazing

Just perfect in every way and this isn't even Radiohead at their best IMO. This gets all the stars possible.

Not really a need to comment. It's radiohead. It's the bends. It's damn near perfect. Although not as perfect as the next one haha. Im enjoying the more deep cuts this time around, though.

Better than I remember it

This is my favorite Radiohead album. The one-two punch of High and Dry and Fake Plastic Trees gets me every time - but the entire thing holds up to those and is fantastic

easy 5

YES! Come on! Classic Radiohead. From song one to the end, it's filled with 5-star songs. This is a great album start to finish!

The first glimpse of greatness from Radiohead. Coming out of the gate with the mediocre Pablo Honey, fans must have been stunned by this, their sophomore effort. Although I'm a big Radiohead fan, I came into this listen expecting to give it 4 stars. I don't think it's their best, but it's a great collection of songs. Listening again though...I can't not give this 5 stars. Every song is pretty perfect.

The ‘difficult second album’ theory blown out of the water. Radioheads second was everything that the first was lacking. A peak of their form of alt-rock, before beginning to create their own sound entirely. One that will dominate and influence the minds of music nerds from Oxford to Osaka for the next 25 years. Following album with a similar sound would have been next to impossible. Having singles like Just, High and Dry and Street Spirit. Whilst having cult classics such as Fake Plastic Trees or Nice Dream or Blackstar. An album where when I want to listen to a song off the album, I end up listening to the whole thing. An album cover that scared me when looking through my parents records when I was a kid. Iconic. British alt-pop-rock perfection. Half a point dropped for My Iron Lung. Half a point gained for sentimental value. I don’t even think it’s their best. SoT: Planet Telex The Bends High and Dry Fake Plastic Trees Bones Nice dream Just Bullet Proof Black Star Sulk Street Spirit Fade Out ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I know it is not regarded as one of the Radioheads best albums, as this was right before they got reaaally experimental with their music. Still, I regard this album very, very highly. The Bends is arguably my favourite brit-pop album, as it contains some great songwriting, some indication of what is to come for Radiohead later, it is not in any sense generic and it never, never in its 48 minute running time gets tiring whatsoever.

Don't need to listen to this one to rate it, but I will anyway because this album kicks ass. This album marks a clear transition point for the band where they ceased to be the band that they were on their first album and started becoming the band that would produce OK Computer. They definitely aren't quite there yet on this album, but it's stellar in its own right. It's cool hearing 90s style guitars with the more experimental music that Radiohead stated doing here. With nearly any other band, this album would be considered part of their run of great albums, but OK Computer, Kid A, and Amnesiac all leave this album behind in the dust. That's sort of the tragedy of this album. It's incredible in its own right, and it should be talked about as one of the best rock albums of the 90s, but it's completely overshadowed by Radiohead's later work 5/5

One of the greatest rock albums. And Radioheads most accessible

Ah, it felt good to go back and listen to Radiohead when they were a straight-forward rock band. "The Bends" is the second studio album from English rock band Radiohead. It has guitar songs and ballads and more restrained arrangements and cryptic lyrics than their debut. It was described as being "more spacey and odd." Boy, if they knew what was coming. Their record label Parlophone put pressure on them after the success of their song "Creep" which apparently led to some high tensions recording. It initially had decent critical reviews but gathered nearly universal acclaim as time went on. Swirling winds open "Planet Telex" and the album. We then get reverb guitar and more electric guitar. Maybe about depression. Maybe about reality being unchangeable. The last of six singles released "The Bends" has five parts and garnered comparisons to Queen and others. Well, no. Just no. The guitars and layered guitars rock this song. We come to the first ballad in "High and Dry." The drum start. The acoustic guitar. Nice guitar. Lead singer Thom Yorke said originally it was about a loony girlfriend but morphed into being mixed-up with success and failure. And we in Chicagoland might have "Fake Plastic Trees" to thank or swear at the reason Lollapalooza is in Grant Park. Radiohead was the first band to play at Hutchinson Field in Grant Park on August 1, 2001. I remember reading a concert review in the "Chicago Tribune" that as this song played fireworks went off behind the band and with Chicago Skyline, the atmosphere, venue and everything was just spectacular. Oh, it's a good song too. Yorke's falsetto. When the song takes off midway through. Inspired by commercialism and the death of Jeff Buckley, the song is about the effect of consumerism on modern relationships. I thought I had read at the time, "Fake Plastic Trees" was about a woman getting an enhancement of something. I'm sticking to it. There's great guitar feedback which I appreciate especially if pisses people off and great guitar solos on "Just." Also, inspired by the band Magazine. "My Iron Lung" has a jangly guitar open and goes to a weird melody. Selling out to make money??? My favorite song on the album is "Black Star." Maybe Radiohead's most pop song in their catalogue. I love the melody, chorus and Yorke's vocals. The album ends with a song they commonly end their concerts with in "Street Spirit (Fade Out)." A dark sequence of guitar notes. Inspired by R.E.M. and about the escape of an oppressive reality. Does this foreshadow where they would go next with "OK Computer" and "Kid A?" It's hard not to think where Radiohead would have gone if they had stayed the rock-pop course after listening to album. I think it would have been very interesting. They did basically become the biggest band in the world so I doubt nothing changes there. On its own this a great album and, for me, very high on my Radiohead album rankings.

not a bad song on the album

Being too young to be open minded, I wrote off Radiohead when Creep arrived. So I missed the Bends album when it dropped. I barely gave OK Computer a glance when it first came out also. It took some cajoling from family and friends to get me to re-appraise Radiohead. I'm glad they cared enough to call me out on my bias. The bends is worth your time. 5 Stars.

5, probably the most vanilla and smooth radiohead album. Not quite a 5 I just love seeing it. Also Fake Plastic Trees

Every time I think I’m off of Radiohead I get pulled back. I think this is my favorite Radiohead album. Some of the same eccentricities of their later work balanced with a bit more overt vulnerability. It’s a wonderful album that’s wonderfully produced

🎶Listenin to Radiohead Oh no We don’t have any real friends No no no🎶

Bless me, my little heart soared when this popped up on a cold damp Monday before work. Quite simply in the top 10 list of greatest albums. Those guitars just hit the spot. Love this so so much. I've played it all through a zillion times. This reaches out to your psyche, squeezes it, tenderly massages it and then throws it into the stratosphere.

Makkelijk 5je vandaag.

Another beauty by Radiohead.

Just love almost everything they do!

Brilliant

These first three radiohead albums are my favorites and this one probably comes in at #2 with OK Computer being #1. Black Star, Planet Telex, Fake Plastic Trees, My Iron Lung... these are the songs you need and no one else was quite scratching this same itch. Not Blur, not Oasis, not Verve or Pulp or Supergrass. This was the only shit.

It's just one of the best

Pretty good

Already in my rotation lately. Fake Plastic Trees has risen in my estimation over the years.

Underrated against, and overshadowed by what came after. It doesn’t miss. Exceptional intelligent 90s indie rock.

Radiohead so easily could have been a forgettable grunge band forever consigned to the early 90s. However, on their second album, they infused their music with a more consistent theme of alienation, a good amount of jazz, and a huge dose of arena rock. The result is Radiohead's first great leap forward, The Bends. This was the first Radiohead album to resonate with me. From the frenetic back and forth of 'Just' to the beautiful and haunting 'Fake Plastic Trees' to the driving closer 'Fade Out (Street Spirit),' this album virtually rewrote what rock music could be. This album would be the apex of most band's careers, but for Radiohead, it is only the first stepping stone to something greater.

PREFS : Planet Telex, The Bends, High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees, (Nice Dream), Just, My Iron Lung, Sulk, Street Spirit (Fade Out) MOINS PREF : Bulletproof... I Wish I Was

Classic

A rock masterpiece.

One of the best albums of all time

Yup, still really great.

Näitä on hankala verrata keskenään YHTÄKÖ BÄNDIÄ OLEN NYT LAITTANA SINNE SUMMARY OSIOON NÄYTILLE.. albumeja piti löytää.. Noh Amnesiac underrated.. kuin pf Animals konsanaan.. Huomattavasti rennompaa kuin atmosfäärisessä Amnesiacissa... Sitä on tultu ku aurinkolomalle ku tätä kuuntelee...

I thought I'd already had this, but I think I've actually just comfort listened to it a fair bit in the last year or so. A perfect pop rock album. Probably responsible for a lot of bad stuff (Keane, Coldplay, all other gentle pop rock bands) all of which miss the sneer, beauty, and sheer musicianship of the original. Best track - everything but Black Star.

Jour 1 - Je connais plutôt bien cet album, il est trop bien, mon préféré de Radiohead. Mes tracks préférées : toutes, mais surtout Just, Street Spirit, The bends, Fake Plastic trees.

Second album in and Radiohead proved they could write perfect songs at this point. It allowed them to experiment significantly afterward. My personal Radiohead chronology mashes together. I know that when Kid A came out I was totally ready for it and it blew my mind. The Bends and OK Computer were 5 and 3 years old by then, I knew them both well, but I don’t recall exactly when I absorbed them. All that is to say my first impression of The Bends didn’t knock my sock off. It grew on me gradually, but I love these songs today. Radiohead made albums that hung together so well at this time. The Bends is the first example of this, in my opinion. I can listen to this anytime, any day, any mood. Easily a 5 for me.

A classic! Cried in the shower listening to fake plastic trees 😂 Sulk and Bones still two of my stand out tracks. Listen more than once today 👍🏼

This is still my favourite album by the band. Killer anthems, with a hint of their progressive leanings. There are other albums of theirs that I enjoy, but this is always most likely to get another listen.

One of the cornerstones of 90s alt rock. Simply fantastic

Much more innocent sound that much of discography. Very acoustic with matching Yorke vocals that are weirdly intelligible and soothing.

Never been a big Radiohead listener but i'm gonna listen to this album again!

a masterpiece - they were so terrified by what they achieved they’ve spent the rest of their careers running away from it

Glad we got to listen to this. I had written it off previously, thinking Fake Plastic Trees was the only song worth listening to on the album. This is tremendous. One can hear Radiohead moving toward what they would become on later works.

Never forget when Tay told a waiter that people who said Kid A is their favorite Radiohead album were trying too hard to be cool

Almost faultless, love it.

Better every listen! STILL!

Sometime around Kid A, Radiohead and I ‘went on a break’. I was an early devotee, buying Pablo Honey when most people were just deciphering Creep. But I loved them from the start. This being their second album, I was still enamoured. These are great songs, beautifully written and crafted. And if you revisit the videos, they were so clever. Like an old friend who was challenging but had a good heart, it’s nice to bump into them every now and then but still slightly draining.

A masterpiece

Their best work in my opinion.

I had this one on a few weeks ago and completely forgot Street Spirit was the cap to the record. I get people like OK Computer, but how do they not rank this just as high? This is likely my favourite Radiohead album. Definitely my most played. I think about this album cover image all the time.

I’ve listened to this album so many times but am still excited to listen to it. Still not my favorite Radiohead album but top 3. 4.5/5

Loved it when it came out!!

A classic. Listened too many times to objectively describe.

So many strong songs how how Radiohead was the best rock band before coming the best band, period. Three classics  – "High and Dry," "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Black Star" – plus several other plus-plus tunes. There's a case to be made that this is their best album, but the case is obviously complicated by how many other great ones there are. Only legit beef is that first side is better than last.

4.7 + Another album I grew up on that I can sing the whole way through. So many dizzying highs - the final chorus and comedown on "Planet Telex", the dramatic build on "Fake Plastic Trees", the jagged bridge on "(Nice Dream)", the haunting vocal harmonies on "Street Spirit (Fade Out)." Johnny Greenwood is the real MVP on here with some stratospheric guitar work, particularly during the solo on "Just." This album was a true clapback to the naysayers who wrote off Radiohead as a one-hit-wonder (myself included).

A hidden broadsheet of songs that are a must

I love Radiohead.

The opening measures of "Planet Telex,", with the bass drum keeping time with the guitar (keys?) delay is super cool. It's been a while since I've listened to this — easy to get caught up in the bounty of material that came after that somehow seems more "important" because it's so innovative and strange, but god damn, the first three songs are so great, and then comes "Fake Plastic Trees" which is immensely beautiful and depressing and dystopian — you feel pain for for the poor girl he's singing about and then about the dude singing. It's a haunting masterpiece of a song. And the performance, especially the vocal performance, is so moving. The melody and delivery give the lyrics a whole other level of weight and meaning. It's really really good. Up to song #8, "My Iron Lung," and there hasn't been a sour note on the album. Yorke and company manage to create an eerie sonic landscape that is at once totally cohesive and unmistakably them, but the album never gets repetitive — the songwriting is just excellent. It's something of a marvel. And this, their second album ... wow. (And not to dis Weezer, but as I was listening to this for the third time on Spotify, a Weezer track came on after, "I'm Tired of Sex," and it was like... "what form of art is this?" It didn't even sound like the same medium.) I'm way less familiar with Pablo Honey, but I can confidently say this is a quantum leap forward in terms of using the tools at hand to create music. At the risk of undervaluing the "5-star" rating — I feel like I've been throwing them out (I would like to revise my "Truth" rating to a 4, please) — this is as close to a flawless album as it gets.

Can anyone listen to High and Dry and not start singing? I didn't cop on to this album in 1995 but once I did, I just couldn't get enough. I still can't. Please come back to us, boys! This is a 10.

Phenomenal album that still has a fairly straightforward rock sound, but provides glimpses of the band that Radiohead would become. Street Spirit (Fade Out) is an all-time great album closer. 5/5

Radiohead yes

Idk man I’m really liking Radiohead

absolutely amazing. alternative rock at its best, incredible album 10/10

Really one of the best albums and probably Radiohead’s most accessible album. I feel like after this they were like “we’ve made the perfect rock record so what now? Let’s get weird and innovative and reinvent ourselves with every album.” Every guitar solo is really distinct and is really special. I’ve listened to this album a bunch and each time I appreciate more each little nuance in all of Thom Yorke’s vocals. Every part is great, the songs are amazing, and this album has a lot of my favorite Radiohead melodies too.

Wow, what a great album. Probably my fav radiohead album. Feels a little more like rock n roll than their other stuff, but still uses dynamics well. So many cool details and nuances in all these songs, down to every little guitar effect and layer By far my fav album on this list so far

Oh hell yeah. This is my favorite Radiohead album. I also think it would be one of the 5 albums I bring with me on a desert island. Thom Yorke's singing has always reminded me of a shy, broken man singing. It sounds like an introvert was singing. His lyrics are so simple and I always think there is so much power in that. Because single lines can resonate with anyone. The songs are about nothing and everything all at once. The band uses space and dynamics in a way that I believe can't be compared to another band. I also think it's one of the best-mixed albums I've ever heard. Top 3 favorite songs: There isn't one bad song on this so here are my three favorites. Fake Plastic Trees- the verse lyrics don't even make total sense to me but the chorus is so beautiful. THEN when the band comes in hard after the second chorus...the build-up...makes the song so heartbreaking. Just- The lyrics in this song are SO GREAT. I never know if he's talking about himself or someone else...and I love that. I have to write a song like that. The different guitar noises are so cool. Bullet Proof...I Wish I Was- This hurts my heart every time I listen to it. Maybe one of the best break-up songs ever written. Favorite Lyrics: "You broke another mirror. You're turning into something you are not." - High and Dry “She says she’d love to come help but the sea would electrocute us all.”- (Nice Dream) “Can’t get the stink off. He’s been hanging ‘round for days” - Just “You are so pretty when you’re on your knees. Disinfected and eager to please” - Sulk Honorable Mentions: - The guitar at the end of The Bends - The change of feel in My Iron Lung

This album and OK Computer would be on my best list

Amazing, loved it.

Was already familiar with this album but hadn't listened to it for years (decades) muscular guitars, fantastic lyrics and some huge hits.

Peak crunchy guitar Radiohead

Fantastic album.

I haven’t this album enough attention in my life!

Probably makes my top 3 or 4 for Radiohead albums

Just radiohead

trop bon RadioHead, je n'avais jamais osé aller dans les autres album que OK computer et Kid A. Ahhh comme j'avais tort. Tellement malade cet album 5

This album is probably the best from Radiohead. I didn't have it when it came out.. they overplayed "high and dry" on the radio so I'm not fond of that one. I picked this up around the time OK Computer came out, which is another great album. Some of my favorite tracks are Fake Plastic Trees, Nice Dream, Bulletproof I wish I was, and Street Sprirt ( Fade Out).

Easy 5. The least popular song on the album (according to Spotify play counts) is Bones, which I still love. Every song on this album is familiar and fun to listen to, for me. Highlights from this listen through: High and Dry, Black Star, Planet Telex

Not a single filler song. "The Bends" and "Fake Plastic Trees" give chills.

Awesome!

Just about as perfect as it gets.

listened to again it's just so good and still before their biggest albums

Rating: 9/10 Best songs: High and dry, Fake plastic trees, My iron lung, Bulletproof…wish I was, Black star

It's Radiohead, of course its amazing

One of my all time favorites, still great almost 30 years later.

This is pure nostalgia for me. First year of uni, plenty of time to listen to music. As much as I love Pablo Honey, this album just lifted their music to another level. So many good songs on here and mountains of atmosphere. Highlights: Just, Street Spirit, High and Dry.

Banger

Fantastic Album. Still guitar-driven, has some elements of Brit Pop, but definitely dipping their toes into more experimental stuff that lead to "Ok Computer" – specifically "My Iron Lung". Favorite tracks – "Planet Telex", "The Bends", "Just".

If I could be who you wanted...all the time...

Over the years I have become increasingly absorbed by Radiohead's later, more experimental works. It has been a few years since I sat down and listened to this album. The Bends overflows stadium-level grandeur infused with deep melancholy. Powerful guitars charge into deeply intimate moments. This is an incredible album. Today this is my favorite Radiohead album. Whatever song is playing is my favorite Radiohead song. Planet Telex's power guitars... Fake Plastic Trees' desperation... Bullet Proof... I Wish I Was' gentle despondence... High and Dry's plea to a friend... (Nice Dream)'s rolling rhythms... Black Star's relationship struggle... Sulk's gorgeous, swinging guitars... and Street Spirit (Fade Out)'s glorious closing, "iMMerse your soUL in LOVE." I could go on and on. Instead I'll go for another listen.

A classic. Radiohead have traded off the goodwill of The Bends and OK Computer ever since releasing album after album that got progressively weirder and less listenable.....but their live shows would still sell out because when they stick to the basics, no one else can do it like they can.

"Creep" saved Radiohead. This single came from a half-baked album, *Pablo Honey*, clumsily mixing britpop with some more "American" influences. But "Creep" was a hit and showed Radiohead they had it in them to make a record for the ages. And since the Oxford quintet was not afraid to take a long, hard look at what they had just done with their first LP (a mindset they would mostly keep for their whole career, up until today), they knew what needed to be done. A perfect balance between self-confidence and self-criticism was the key. And it opened a door that led to one of the most brilliant discographies ever put to tape. In the course of this discography, *The Bends* is therefore Radiohead's first masterpiece (there's been five of them by my count, but first times always have their peculiar charm, don't they?). To say it shortly, this first masterpiece was mostly remarkable in the manner it aptly mixed twisted rockers and heartwrenching ballads. Everything is stellar in it--the songwriting, the lyrics, the vocal performances, the intricate bass-and-guitar arrangements, John Leckie's clean yet no-nonsense production. Tracks segue into one another in a totally dynamic way. The dystopian atmosphere that will further be explored in *OK Computer* and *Kid A* can already be felt (but this time through generally more streamlined compositions than what would come next). And the songs, the songs... Between the intense title-track, the melancholic "High And Dry", the devastatingly beautiful "Fake Plastic Trees", the tight and angular "Just", the sinister guitar hook of the messy and sardonic "My Iron Lung", not to mention the epic and poignant closer "Fade Out", with its elegiac arpeggio and truly *haunted* chorus, there's a little bit for everyone. And yet this record still sounds cohesive and ambitious, as adventurous as it is--every britpop or US alt-rock influence being properly digested to mingle into a wide-sounding sonic landscape, every vocal intention and guitar lick serving a discourse that transcends style or genres. This here is one of those very rare albums where there's absolutely no fillers (just like *OK Computer*, actually)--each track has something unique going on for it, even the ones I didn't mention up there. I can't but envy the people who are discovering it today, 25 years or so later. And given what most reviewers are saying in this group, they are certainly not disappointed... But this is no surprise (and no alarm, to quote a later song). Just as opener "Planet Telex" states it, Radiohead are never sounding better than when they lament that "everything is broken", only to pick up those disparate pieces and shape them into a single body of work that's unique, moving and relevant. They're THE postmodernist rock band of the late nineties / early aughts. And as such, they deserve to have their seats at the table of the greatest acts ever... Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 886 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 60 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 29 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 26

Instant 5/5 for me. This album is so good! Brings back great memories and the songs are mostly all absolute bangers.

Not much to say except it's a banger, one of Radiohead's best which some tuuuuunes on it

Their most accessible album and the gateway drug to the rest of their music, an excellent precursor to OK Computer. You can tell they wrote some of these songs with headline slots at festivals in mind, they're just great loud bangers.

Undisputed classic. The start of the journey to greatness!

Classic radio head

Groundbreaking. Good sound

Brilliant

amazing album. the one that got me first into radiohead. 5/5

masterpiece - as good or better than OK Computer. No misses on this album.

90/100 the bends is a killer song that inital chord sequence in high and dry is so wet n sticky, kinda ironic actually. (nice dream) is such a good name for a song just- you do it to yourselfffff i love this song cus i do do it to myself. my iron lung-were losing it, cant u tell? what a nice melodyyyy. This is a great album I love the rock chords it does this very well. 90s rock done perfectly,. But its also interesting how this is before you can hear that very specific radiohead style, but still a great album. Its catchy and moody and melodic and cohesive. just very pretty emo shit. I see myself listening to this while walking through a city by myself. I really do enjoy!

Absolute classic - with an arc in the middle that is simply peerless

best radiohead album

Thom Yorke might talk a load of bollocks these days but this album is absolutely fucking fire. So many good tracks. Amazing. Enjoyed this one.

Очень люблю радиохед, рада переслушать этот альбом. 10/10

Absolute classic!

I love a good excuse to listen to this album. A respite from the mediocre crap that plagues the rest of this list. Favourites: Planet Telex, High and Dry, Just, My Iron Lung, and, of course, Street Spirit.

Let' get this out of the way: I am an unabashed Radiohead fanboy. So it might not come as a surprise that I'm giving their first classic album a perfect score. But the truth is, how was I supposed to give it a lower score with songs like Fake Plastic Trees and Street Spirit?

Very unique... beautiful vocals and amazing lyrics

Damn this was good.

Mind-bending. I could spend some time writing more about this album, but I rather listen to it again instead. It's R.E.M., I mean, what else can I say?

Great album that isn't fronted by big hits but rather convinces with a high quality throughout the whole album. Loved the sound

This stayed on all day.

19th January 2022 Listened throughout the day on my phone, went in to Brixton and got an iPhone. Terrified that I was going to lose all this data but managed to find out how to keep it! Such a good album, it's searing and tearing whilst being tender.

It's a great album. We all know what came next, and I'm not going to judge this on that. So it gets 5 from me on it's own merit.

Absolute classic. Grabbed this recently on vinyl. May be still my favorite Radiohead album.

All tracks great. All tracks have inspired at least one inventive and interesting cover--that I know of. Shows that this all-time band was making excellent music even before they started going really weird. Now they’re making excellent music AND it’s really weird.

Perfect

Best songs: The bends High and dry Just (Black Star)

It's my favorite Radiohead album and probably the only one I'd still put on.

I already love Radiohead, so I knew I'd give it a 5, but it really is well deserved. This was the beginning of their metamorphosis into what they are today. (Pablo Honey is ass xD)

I’m not sure I like Radiohead but I love The Bends. Their next best songs (Creep, No Surprises) just sounds like tracks that could be off this album. Everything else I find boring or stressful. But this album really his the mark for me, perfect mix of grunge/BritPop/electro.

Hef ekki hlustað á þessa lengi, en hún er flottur fulltrúi þess tíunda. Nostalgísk en líka afar góð.

Hits from start to finish

Everything is… broken

Lol sure

I had mostly avoided Radiohead for a decent portion of my serious music-listening life, partially by accident, so I think this was only their second or third album I've listened all the way through. Was pretty blown away on first listen and returning to this some months later felt the same. Guitar playing is infectious, grandiose and over-the-top at times in the right way. A 5! Already Saved: High and Dry; Fake Plastic Trees; (Nice Dream); Bullet Proof… I Wish I Was; Black Star; Street Spirit (Fade Out) Saved After Listening: Planet Telex, Just, My Iron Lung*, Sulk

Saved Prior: High and Dry Not Saved: 12. Bullet Proof ... I Wish I Was 11. My Iron Lung Cutting Edge: 10. Bones 9. Fake Plastic Trees 8. Sulk Off Rip: 7. Just 6. The Bends 5. Black Star 4. Street Spirit (Fade Out) 3. (Nice Dream) 2. High and Dry 1. Planet Telex Overall Notes: I hate to give this album a 5 considering how pretentious the Radiohead fandom is, but I really liked this album. Plugs the gap between alt-grunge and art-rock, guitar licks and quaint little melodies abound. A low five, but I take solace in knowing that most Radiohead fans consider this one of their lesser albums. Hope I don't look back on this review as a Radiohead stan and rue its writing.

F’n A. Yup. So happy to see and hear this on here.

Showing it’s age but it has a naïve quality that will never be captured again

Hard to believe this is 25 years old. It still sounds as fresh as it did back in 1995. It's something I've listened to regularly over that time.

Sequencia intensa.

Street Spirit one love

Already know and love this album better good to hear it again

What an album perhaps Radiohead's best collection of songs. Absolutely no filler. The 123 punch of The Bends, High and Dry and Fake Plastic Trees is nonpareil. Maybe it lacks the experimentalism of OK Computer and Kid A, but the songs are so strong that I can forgive the fact that it fits neatly into into the alt-rock formula. Besides you can see the seeds of OK Cokmputer in the closing track. I LOVE THIS ALBUM! 5 🌟

Наверно, единственный альбом Радиобашки, где меня не задолбал ужасный вокал Йорка и где нет конченого IDM.

Some outstanding music. Haunting and solemn, but melodic all at once.

I've been friends with lots of people with lazy eyes in my life. For example Steph and I spent a whole summer together being Floyds and watching MTV. The summer of '95 was right before I moved to LA. The 'Just' music video played at least twice every hour, but it seemed like more. That was a clever video, it was great. Fake Plastic Trees, notsomuch. In the FPT video, Thom (pronounced 'Tom') turns the drama up to 11 while imitating a baby in a shopping cart. It was disastrous and didn't do the band any favors. Anyone that watched that immediately hated them, him, Thom (Tom). The album Pablo Honey, was good and an easy listen. The Bends, followed PH and was a logical extension of the first with more angsty, artsy-fartsy undertones thrown in. I liked it. Revisiting this album, it's not groundbreaking, but it's held up okay. This is more like a warm wool sweater that smells like home and you put it on when the leaves turn brown at the end of summer. The Bends is one of the quintessential albums of the 90's, and by those terms it's relatively traditional. There's heavy guitar reverb, song builds, and self-consumed lyrics with a tinge of despair. It is also the last album before the band becomes Radiohead. Before Ok Computer. Perhaps all of that self-introspection is authentic, Thom (Tom) isn't as insufferable as we thought. Maybe he was somehow able to see a future with machine learning, crappy politics, overconsumption, etc. and identify change is coming. Ok Computer, the album after The Bends was truly groundbreaking and set the band off in a new direction with intricate arrangements, new instruments, computers, electronica, etc. It's incredible that this is the same band. All good things come to an end. This album The Bends, marks the closing of an era, the end of summer, the end of Floyd and for me at least, the end of the 90's. It is the closing door that goes unnoticed and time moves on. 5! Great album

Perfection

A perfect straight ahead rock album for me. 3 guitars going at it for most of the songs

I am a fan. First Radiohead I've listened to and liked. It makes me want to listen to their other stuff again. Maybe Kid A and OK Computer are actually good. Can't wait to check them out again. Great songs on this album start to finish.

great!!!

Great album

Great album. Songs such as "High and Dry" and "Bones" remain personal favorites.

5 Stars

this is the second to worst radiohead album but I still love it

Finally something I know and that I was looking forward to listen to. Though I only listened to selected songs of this album before. I have a difficult past with Radiohead. I tried getting into them about 7 years ago. While some songs were great they just didn't become favourites. There is beauty to be found in Thom Yorke's voice many songs just didn't resonate with me at the time. Now, listening to "The Bends" as a full album I have to say I quite like it. It got high highs and many of them, though there are some lows for me as well. However, the highs outshine the lows in my opinion. I'm pretty sure that this album gets better the more you listen to it. Also, it's got that 90's - putting on your cheap headphones and listen to that album on repeat on your walkman - vibe to it. Favourite songs: Planet Telex, High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees, Street Spirit

one of my favorite albums of all time. although maybe not as influential as OK Computer or Kid A, the songwriting and melodies on this project are immaculate. fantastic project that i’ll continue to rotate until the day i die

and thats why it really hurts

solid.

Great album, nice vibes throughout - so many classic noticeable tunes and also several unheard new favourites.

Don't really have anything to say. 5/5

Love Radiohead! Very good album start to finish, one of my favourites. Barely any downsides

pretty good innit

I think I like this more than any other Radiohead album. This is actually really good.

insert joke about benders here.

Heard it before, and loved every second of it.

Al lang 1 van mijn favoriete albums! Logisch dat deze 5* krijgt

One of my favorite albums from this band and from the 90s. Great melodies and beautiful arrangement and production.

Love it. The album where Radiohead showed truly how great they are. BT: The Bends, Just, Street Spirit.

Thom Yorke's weird little talented face. Not as up its own ass as OK Computer and not as revered...but it's better, isn't it? Tweek my nipples.

Briljante plaat! Klinkt ook nog steeds niet gedateerd...

All time favorite. Niets meer, niets minder

Appeltje-eitje: fantastisch album!

Vvvery good

One of the best ever!

one of the great records of the 90's. excellent

C'mon! is friking Radiohead, what's not to like?

Classic 90s, all the feels

So many greats

One of my favs

Still amazing. Even with the filler

Immerse your soul in love
