Reviews (page 11 of 14)
As a not well versed jazz guy this immediately reminded me of monsters inc. Im not sure what that says about me but it is what it is. But there are some great tracks here. I really loved take five and blue rondo. Both very very good. And otherwise I liked it but I just dont know great jazz from not great jazz. I always have fun but I still haven't come across that aha moment I feel like I need. Maybe it will come maybe not. Ik just going with the flow here.
Why not?
I hate to be that guy, but when I listen to music like this you could put on literally any other kind of jazz album and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. That being said, this is smooth, and so easy to listen to. It’s hard to put a measure on a genre like this, but I did like it so it gets a 3/5. ✨
Actually first Jazz stuff I liked...To remember, Piano driven Jazz is my kinda Jazz
perfectly pleasant
Quality.
Absolut nicht mein Genre! Und doch angehört und für gut befunden. Passt nicht immer, aber zum Runterkommen ok!
Delightful. “Take Five” is undoubtedly recognizable though this would be the first time I ever learned or cared to look into its origin. Which is unfortunate because I do enjoy it but jazz is an esoteric world where musicians play for other musicians. Though this album feels very accessible. I’d love to have a physical vinyl copy of this on hand to play while cooking or reading as the music doesn’t demand your attention and allows you to slip freely on and off the wild trip they’re taking you on.
My mom played this album a lot, so I've heard it a number of times. I know this score probably seems low, but I do think it's a good album, and probably one of my favorite instrumental jazz albums. "Take Five" is the standout here, but it's a solid album all around. 3.5 stars.
3.5
Fire cover. Not bad, just not the vibe I need at the moment. I will totally put this on sometime when I need to do my homework. 5.5/10
Some familiar movie sounds, but not much to bring me back
Smooth, sometimes too smooth that it flows in one ear and out the other
If this album were an ice cream flavour it would be mint choco chip. Fav song: Take Five
Surprisingly good for instrumental.
Très bon album de jazz pour l'apéro, rythmes variés
Alors, j’ai entendu des sons familiers dont une « reprise ». Je n’ai pas cherché qui était à l’origine… mais lui probablement. Comme une sensation d’écouter Jazz à fip…
The rest of the album doesn’t live up to “take five” - but it’s still an enjoyable listen for some background music.
Cool stuff
It was a good jazz album, unfortunately I'm not the biggest jazz fan. The first song was really good and almost an add, but the second half made me not want to add it. If it was two separate songs I'd like it much more.
Easy listening. Not too much shrill brass, which my ears are thankful for. Started out strong, but I was a little bit bored at the end.
Another non vocal jazz album, although still not the biggest jazz fan with my current setup. However, I can surely understand (and picture) the setting in which this music would work for me (sunset...park...reading book)
very very good.
I don't dislike it, but it felt like (good) elevator music, which is not my preference at all. I actually quite enjoyed it, but this is not the kind of music I would remember or listen again. I prefer something more powerful and energetic. I get what kind of vibe they were going for, and I think they achieved it really well, but it's not something I'm looking for. And there's also a lot of jazz album that do kind of the same (can't say I'm well-versed in jazz, though). This is a cool album nonetheless. 7/10
Quite enjoyed this! Will listen to more of them as enjoyed the groove of the music
DISCLAIMER: I am a complete jazz ignoramus When I hear the word "jazz" I think of controlled chaos. This album is described as "jazz" but there's too much control and not enough chaos. The instruments sound jazzy but the overall vibe is easy listening. Can easy listening also be jazz? Isn't jazz supposed to be challenging? I don't feel challenged by this
Closer to 3.5
It's always fun hearing a song you know from one of these and going "ohhh that's why it's here"
Take Five is an amazing song. Everything else was remotely forgettable, nice background music.
I liked that one! It's just that it's not something I would listen to usually, it felt more like background music for a fancy dinner.
Best Song: Take Five It's jazz. It works when doing menial tasks I guess. I wish I could make myself sound smarter and say that I understand (or care, for that matter) about the musical arrangements and all that. I am not a musician and have zero plans to ever become one so I don't need to know how the sausage is made. 3/5.
Very dated
one song was great ... but overall I don't really like jazz
What can I say? It's Jazz. I like it. I don't think I'd ever come back to this album for fun. Maybe if I was doing a boring task and didn't want to get distracted, but wanted to be entertained. This is perfect for that. I've realized that Jazz is about getting into the moment. Becoming the music. Nothing groundbreaking here. Just good tunes for good times
nice jazz album. However, I was in the mood of more energetic songs. The first song was nice though. Take five has always been a legend ofc.
Meh. Cool jazz, but I was not in the mood for jazz honestly. Need to revisit some other time
I mean, fine. Jazz, I enjoyed.
found it very fun
I didn’t listen to the full album
Honestly, really good music overall. Would probably be a good vinyl, but not entirely my style. Wouldn’t listen to it on the daily or anything. 6/10
A nice jazz album that didn’t overstay its welcome.
3.5/5
A little too mellow, i like a little more chaos.
This was pleasant. Kind of like listening to the Peanuts music.
"Blue Rondo" is a bit nerves inducing. Not sure I loved it as probably needed some foreplay first to get into the mood with this one. Anyway, normal service resumed after this, and I was able to gather myself. "Strange Meadow Lark" I was thinking Theresa May, cutting loose in a meadow, probably humming a jaunty tune and feeling incredibly rebellious about… well, about being in a meadow. Bit of waffle but it was a little straight for my liking is the point I am very tenuously making. "Take Five" - I definitely massacred this on the trumpet as a kid. fun times. Ultimatelay fantasic sounds for the era and a fun one to listen to. Not sure it quite captivates me but very very solid. 3 is harsh but its a 5 start system!
The album starts ok but just had me thinking "great... More jazz". Actually this album is easier to get into than some and I thought "Strange Meadow Lark" was a good listen, maybe I prefer piano to the usual horns. Turns out "Take Five" is a track I have heard many times without knowing what it was which shows that this is so influential it can be recognised by a non Jazz fan. For me, the interest in this album comes from the rhythms. There were a couple of moments where the time signatures of drums and piano seemed to weave in and out of phase with each other which was cool. Can't say I was particularly excited by this though and, as usual, my interest was largely academic.
whats weird is how many of these tunes I sorta recognized. Perfect as background music, light jazz, but not much else.
To quote Bee Movie… “Do you like jazz?” Yeah it’s fine!
Very familiar with "Take Five", but the rest of the album is pretty cool but not as good as "Take Five." This is good background music to have on while cooking or reading but nothing I'd seek out to listen to often. It's an album I'd listen to if I wanted to try to get into jazz again for the 1,000th time but then I remembered I'm not a huge fan of the genre but have a lot of respect for the musicians themselves.
I've described way too many albums as 'pleasant' lately, but I'm really struggling to find other words. It's just a real smooth and thoroughly pleasant time. It's not exciting, it's not particularly daring, it's just nicely listenable. That's hardly a ringing endorsement, but I enjoyed it in the background. 3.5 rounded down.
It’s good but I will never recover from the psychic damage I got from “Kathy’s Waltz”.
Blue Rondo à la Turk - 4/5 Strange Meadow Lark - 3/5 Take Five - 5/5 Three to Get Ready - 4/5 Kathy's Waltz - 4/5 Everybody's Jumpin' - 3/5 Pick Up Sticks - 3/5 Average score: 3.7/5 (rounding down)
A great jazz album.
Growing up Dave Brubeck was Jazz is my mind. Not because my parents liked or even played him, but because he appeared to be tv’s go to example. So a character in the Beiderbeck Affair liked Jazz, out would come the vinyl and on would go ‘Take 5’. This is undeniably easy listening, its just soothing like a musical trickling along, not the handbrake turn you get with some Jazz. There’s security in this dort of Jazz, you are never in doubt that someone will go off script and do that Jazz staple of improvising. That said this safety means it generally feels like background music. Take 5 is a classic.
Upon opening the 1001 generator this morning I saw the artist name, rolled my eyes and thought "oh great, fucking jazz". While I enjoy a lot of jazzy music, me and actual jazz have not really got on so far, but I tried to put that out of my mind. Someone in the reviews described this as baby's first jazz album, which probably goes someway towards explaining why I actually enjoyed this. I already knew Take Five obviously, and like it, but I honestly enjoyed every track. I don't think there's anything wrong in wanting to enjoy melody and tap your foot rather than be "challenged" by discordant and "difficult" music. I listened to this more than once, high praise for me and a jazz record. 3/5
Favorite: Take Five
Nice
Not a big jazz guy, but this is pretty good.
Smooth jazz, something to put in your coffee shop while clients are munching on some donuts
When I brought up the idea of listening to this album for the first time to a friend who actually listens to jazz, he remarked that this was a boring album. And he was right overall, but if this is why we have cool jazz, I can't fault it beyond that I guess. Pleasant experience.
A nice instrumental album, not really my first choice of music though
5.5/10 Highlight: Take Five
Soft and nice Jazz, very sweet but repetitive album, i would be glad to re -listen sometime, but it's role might be more backround than fron page.
It’s fine background music
Easy listening. 2nd Dave Brubeck to review.
Enjoyed the vibe of this album but it seemed like every song went on and on
Smooth jazz with a warmth and lightness of tone. Very pleasant.
ok
Liked it! When Take Five played I went "Ooooh this song!". I just let my mind go along with the music and had a great time.
This was a very easy listen, nothing really stood out to me during the listen.
Ok, soft
3.4 stars rounded down
it’s cool and all but for the record this made me zone out and stare at a tree out the window for 20 mins, or maybe it was the fact that i had a huge lunch idk
Not bad music but not my jam. Interesting if you’re into music theory (I’m not)
More of a background music for me
Nice listen. Not sure how this stands out from other albums in this genre but that’s probably my issue. Seeing this is from ‘59 and I think it could still stand up today is impressive. 3.25
Pretty enjoyable for jazz and def recognized some songs. Strong 3* cuz it is still jazz after all... 3.5/5
Great background music but I wouldn't sit and listen to it by itself
This is pretty good, but why is it a must listen?
Very crisp and clean. Nice but didn’t stand out.
Musically is very interesting. It is too long though. The hits are music jewels.
It feels like a pretty piece of art that I would admire in a museum, but would not hang on my own wall.
Great club jazz. Not sure why this one made the list and not the hundreds of others of equal quality. 3/5
I'm just happy to be able to put a name to these songs
A pleasant surprise
The Good: We get a break! The Bad: Trying to count the instruments being played… The Ugly: Not knowing why we are getting a time out… What did we do wrong? Can we make up? Did you hate that movie you saw last night too? What? The music snob in me says that this is a great album, instead 5* The hungover guy in me says that I need an aspirin and no way in hell will the smooth jazz make me feel better The Gen X’er in me doesnt’ understand why people are complaining about the color of Dave’s skin… I know that I will give the cover art 5* Doubt I will be listening to this with much frequency… So 3* straight down the middle… which is odd as this album, it seems, is supposed to open up one’s ears to Jazz… and I like jazz… just not this album… that much
Nie jest to totalnie mój klimat a oceniać trzeba.
Yeah... I'm not a fan of these old experimental jazz albums, it was just kind of boring to me, it's okay, it's clearly well made & competent, just not for me, I can see why it's so highly regarded though, still, I thought it was boring.
I don't usually listen to jazz but this was a fun one to listen to whilst cooking dinner, if I was into the genre more I would probably appreciate it more and rate it higher.
Was quite pleasant. Very chill and nice background music for working.
Quintessential - optimistic
Jazz!
I'll start off by saying I've always enjoyed "Blue Rondo," and I like the sound of chill West coast jazz. But listening to the entire album, there are moments where I feel it is almost slipping into easy listening territory. I know jazz snobs out there probably think I'm blaspheming or something, but the airy saxophone solos and laid-back groove really does make the music fade into the background for me at multiple points on this album. There are definitely moments that grab my attention, but I prefer music that fully engages me the entire time I'm listening.
Джаз не моё. но теперь я знаю, кто создал "Take Five"
Alright but didn’t feel too special to me and didn’t do that much but still decent. 3 stars
The music was interesting, but at the end of the day, it's jazz. I wouldn't mind listening to this at a bar or restaurant, but otherwise, meh.
Classic jazz.
Très sympa. 3ème jour de diete. 2 cours de math et visite du parc de la briantais. Regarder encanto en famille.
Hate jazz. Not the most annoying jazz I've had to listen too.
Feels like we get a new jazz album just about every month. At some point most of these jazz albums sound kind of similar and I end up just giving it a middle-of-the-road grade. This album makes for good instrumental background music, but that's about it. I promise I did enjoy it! 3 stars.
That was some pretty jazzy jazz right there I must say
Easy listening accessible nice background music
"Take Five" is easily the standard out track here, and you can see why it still gets play to this day. The rest is fine, if unmemorable, ranging from "good cocktail lounge music" to "good dentist office lobby music."
Expected to like this more but, besides 'Take Five', it feels technically proficient but emotionally empty.
Jazz is intriguing and somewhat chaotic. I like that it doesn’t follow the rules. Good to have on in the background. Take Five is my fave track.
Safe. Too safe. Also bland, and predictive. The only nice thing is the uncommon time signatures, and if that's the only part of an album that actually raises an eyebrow in surprise, then sheesh. Not my style. EDIT: Well, I admit I was a tad bit wrong about this album. I'll bump it up a star because I find it to be very good study music and Take Five and Three to Get Ready is good, but that doesn't give it more than a 3-star rating. ⭐⭐⭐
Not a fan of jazz, as it turns out.
I’m sure it’s a great album for the genre but It’s not for me
Nice jazz album with one known song 6/10
I'm not much for jazz. It took me a while to work up the motivation to listen to this one. Made me crave a martini. Too bad I'm at work.
A nice jazz piano album. Couldn't really get into it as it's not my style, but I was able to enjoy it as some background listening even if it didn't lock me in fully. Overall: 2.5/5
This is the first of the 1001 albums that I'll be trying to listen to and review review. Unfortunately, I have mostly only ever listened to jazz as a kind of music in the background. I thought that this album started off pretty strong and didn't feel like a forgettable background piece. I really liked blue rondo a la turk
Bello ma il jazz dopo un po' diventa stucchevole. I brani vanno presi singolarmente oppire non ascoltati con le orecchie, ma con il tempo del mentre fai altro
Meh, kinda cool but not my jam Not Dave’s fault but I clearly recognize that Turk song from an annoying series of commercials and it kinda hard he’s my mellow ya dig?
Great jazz album. Love the cover design and the artwork. Lots of great musical talent on this album. The song that really grabbed my attention the most was “Take Five”. That song is everything that’s right with jazz. It’s smooth and sophisticated, it is pleasant and atmospheric. It hits like a nice drag of a joint after sipping from a glass of whiskey, that perfect cradle of warmth. The song is actually super popular, I knew the song instantly even though I had no idea what the name of the song was or where I heard it. The album also display the worst about jazz, which is the fact that it can kinda be just a mess of sound that’s not really memorable. But it does give off a very casual and relaxed vibe. This would be a great album to listen to when you just get home from work and you are going through your routine to unwind. But there in lies the problem, cause that one song really carries the whole album. So it’s almost like I’m reviewing the album based entirely off that song but then I have to take away points to account for all the other songs that don’t get literally stuck in your head. So while I think that the “take five” song coincidentally is a five, I think the album as whole is more of a weak 3. The other tracks do continue the pleasant casual vibe but they don’t do anything to add to it or elevate it. If you like jazz though this is probably a pillar of the genre, I wouldn’t know. Go listen.
This was good for what it was, but hard to listen to the whole album
funky jazz reminds me of live pub music
Jazz
Nice easy listening jazz. Seems dated but good for evening back ground music.
Cool. Little freneric at times
Enjoyed this, quite nice to listen to while working
Nie mój świat, ale ładne. Jakbym miał zdefiniować jazz to właśnie tak. 3/5
For jazz it was pretty entertaining but I’m never in the mood for jazz at this point in my life.
A very cool recording to add to my collection
Not a country person, but loved the energy and the humor in this performance.
Pretty solid jazz album, if quite forgettable.
My parents had this on CD! I can only remember listening to the iconic Take Five on repeat though. The rest is mostly chilled, unobtrusive background music, with the occasional shot of wacky-time-signature energy, like on the first track.
Great jazz album, but essential, nope.
Yea jazz is good
I'm finally starting to like this album when I listened to it on the way to work today not my favorite hardcore album but pretty good also I'm on the toilet at work while writing this so I should be getting back now
This is #day209 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... well, more jazz. Yay? I’m not sure what to say about this one. It’s fine, I guess? Not exactly background music, since it does have some unexpected turns. I’m not a jazz expert, you know. I did dive into jazz history a bit around the early 2010s, probably because of the Jazz Bezz festival in my hometown of Lviv (which I mention in other jazz album reviews), and I should probably stop saying that. But if I’m being honest, I wouldn't choose to put this on by myself. I've read that Dave Brubeck is regarded as a seminal cool jazz pianist and all that, and I respect it, but that’s about it. Let it be a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day210.
I love the smoothness in this album, makes me feel like im in this time period (feels like i just sat down at a fancy restaurant).
Impressive and important and not for me.
A bit dull
Jazz. Very cool.
I love my white homies
already listened to it, is good, chill
It’s very good classic jazz, but also a bit of lounge music, I think I just don’t like the genre as much as I thought I do.
3 out of 5. Good album with headphones at night.
Yes it's on the list but why Not that it's bad though Because it's not... Okay it was kind of good
Nice change
Good jazz album. The first tune is kinda spicy, the rest are super sexy. 1001 albums worthy: Yes - 49/86
nice sound, chill
Calming
Nicer than a bunch of jazz albums I've listened to before, I would say.
I got time for that
Classical style elevator music. It has a place just not for me. It’s not bad, just hard to get through with my standards
Ah so this is the album with take five on it. I don't know how to rate this. Favorite track(s): blue rondo a la turk, take five Will I revisit?: low priority Current rating: 7/10
Average jazz album.
I'm not a big jazz fan but I've been listening to it recently. This is a very well known album. I've never listened to it but I recognised many of the tracks which have made their way into TV shows and adverts over the years. A short album which seemed to be over before I'd really settled into it. A pleasant enough 38 minutes
I’m sure it was influential, but it honestly sounds like elevator music. Maybe culture and time didn’t do it much favors there.
Enjoyed
Nice jazz album! It really took me on a time travel journey to the 50's/60's.
first track: whimsical vibes cigarette smoke dark sunglasses cooking and meal and light dancing impressive solos, not too obnoxiousness songs are a little long, feel like they could be split up however, the lil codas are nice. very full circle second track: cozy vibes nice chill sax solo into piano , i appreciate that no one is overplaying really nice contrast from first track. eases you into the VIBE third track: it’s kinda sexy sorta giving hold music vibes a little repetitive in comparison to the other tracks, doesn’t feel like it’s really going anywhere cool spotlight for the drums though kind of wish the drum part was a little more expansive, but it was nice to break apart the track track four: i find myself getting a little bored by now, but it’s still a pleasant experience overall this is nice background music, maybe i’m over thinking it i like the how the rhythm section is breaking this track up it’s starting to win my attention back the piano is waking me up found myself humming by the end of it track five: very playful everything positive about the other tracks stays true to this one whole record is very cohesive so far feels like they’re playing in my kitchen while i do chores complimentary to the snowy day we are having this album is so cozy feels like a warm blanket and a cup of hot chocolate track six: the piano is a little disorienting and jumpy, but the track is called everybody’s jumpin the jumpy parts break up the sections nicely the sax is very nice track seven this is the last song, but doesn’t have closer vibes (yet) kind of feels like maybe they’re getting ready to pack it in though still chill the slow natural fade out (?) is a nice way to finish this album feels like a credits rolling more than a big explosive ending this was a pleasant listening experience. very cohesive, players did a lot without doing too much. i would probably return to this. maybe while i’m cooking or something. 7/10
Enjoyable Easy Listening music which was apparently played in the "wrong" time measure. It mixed well while driving around on a mild Winter day. I just wish it had some more variety. Favorite Track: "Take Three".
Bueno
Enjoyed it - gets a bit meh towards the end but overall good stuff
Was surprised how much of this I’ve heard, or heard sampled before. Favorite track: Kathy’s Waltz Saved songs: Kathy’s Waltz, Take Five
no überaschend guete und stimmige Jazz für es album wo vode 50er Jahr isch. (No front Jazz community). Es Album woni gern ei mal dureglost han und 2 lieder mal ih minere Jazz Playliste zwüscheglaageret han. Take Three, The Dave Brubeck Terzett.
daveeeeee für mich mid stuff ussert halt de absoluti banger wo "take five" isch grad chli wenig zit für reviews, scusa
babadabadoodoododoo doodoodoo scat scat ba dabida scat doo doo take five isch gfühlt s‘erste jazz lied woni bim name kännt han, good times suscht isch die ganz gschicht recht am mentigsnoah verbidüüset aber isch sichen super sach gsi 3 jazz hands
3.5, some decent tracks in there, need a bit more experience with the genre to appreciate it
Fine
***An ok album, nice easy listening instrumental.
Good jazz album. Hannah gets PTSD from "Blue Rondo à la Turk" because it's Expedia's hold music and they gave us issues with going to Denver. It's suchhhh a good song tho. My biggest complaint is this album really starts to blend together and starts to all sound the same. The only way I can really tell we've moved to a different song are the time signature changes lol Liked Songs: "Blue Rondo à la Turk" , "Take Five" , "Three to Get Ready"
This is a solid album, especially for those who enjoy unconventional time signatures and complex rhythms. While I can appreciate the experimental nature of the music, it didn’t stand out much for me personally and felt more middle of the road overall.
Brubeck was the definition of lounge…proper mellow relaxed vibes from the quartet on this album. Many memories of listening to my Dad playing this (especially Take 5) whilst he grooved (dad danced?) around our lounge with a Scotch & a smoke.
I eat my words from yesterday: sometimes Jazz is not that bad!
um bom jazz
Very technically good, but bored me into thinking about music theory. It felt like it had nothing to say besides ooh aren't we clever ooooooh, and when I have to sit and analyse your music to extract something good from it... nah I'm bored at that point. I studied "take five" at uni, I appreciate it on a technical and compositional level, but would not be hurt if I never listened to it again. I'm giving it 3 stars for being well composed and how talented the performers are... but it's an on-paper 3.5* and an emotional "steely dan"/1 out of 5
Jazz... I can appreciate it for the technical skills involved, but I don't love the genre, especially on a recorded album. More than any other genre, jazz should be *experienced* live. That said, this is a decent album, and Take Five will always be a classic.
5/10
Energetic jazz. Good background music.
Nice background music for a dinner party, but not antything I would actively seek out.
I'm not too big on Jazz but it's nice. This album is somewhere between interesting/captivating and pleasant background music for me.
Apparently the universe thinks our group needs a lot of jazz in the new year! Three days, three jazz albums. I actually recognized the song Take Five, and the first track sounded semi-familiar too. I enjoyed it fine overall. In general, jazz is more of a vibe to me than something I can really fully absorb though. It doesn't move my soul the way I'd like. I have a hard time actively listening to it, although when I do, it CAN be very pleasant and lovely. This album kind of transports you back in time and space, it's easy to imagine being in a dark smoky jazz club in that era. Which is pretty cool. But can we rock out again here soon?
Jazz is cool, fun to listen to this old one!
Really loved Take Five and Blue Rondo. The rest is good background music.
Time Out may be yet another instrumental jazz album but i think i do like it more than quite a bit of the other instrumental jazz albums i have listened to before. I tend to find this genre of music to be pleasant and inoffensive but it often tends to meld together as there are just so many of these albums. But this album does a little bit (though not much) to help itself stand out from the rest of them. Sometimes the players could do solos on their instruments (i guess i call them that) in a few of the songs and those parts are what i find to be some of the more unique parts of this album. This album may be another instrumental jazz album but these parts elevate this one above some of the others. Best Song: Take Five Worst Song: Blue Rondo a la Turk
Wonderful! Really top notch jazz, and especially amazing given how early it was. Without lyrics, four stars feels like a little too much to me, but it's certainly close.
Pretty chill music to have in the background
6/10 - it was some decent jazz. I played take 5 in orchestra for some reason so I know that song and like it from that. I assumed blue rondo a la Turk would be like rondo a la Turka, and I think it is, but didn’t hear the resemblance.
I'm not much of a jazz guy, but I found this album tolerable.
7/10 Highlights: Strange Meadow Lark Take Five
Lekkere en beetje saaie cool-jazz. Take Five is misschien wel het bekendste jazz-nummer, maar als plaat weet Time Out me nou ook weer niet echt te overtuigen... 6,5 Highlights Take Five
This is a solid album, especially for those who enjoy unconventional time signatures and complex rhythms. While I can appreciate the experimental nature of the music, it didn’t stand out much for me personally and felt more middle-of-the-road overall.
Nice Jazz album, nothing more. Would listen again, as "Take Five" is a great song and this album would be great to put on in the background.
Jazz man testify! Some dudes all playing different shit at the same time.
Nice in the morning
Not the most interesting jazz I've ever listened to. I can see why this sold so many copies though - bit it's really just a bit too tame and vanilla for me.
Jazz. Easy listening lounge music. Smooth piano.
solid
A little too pleasant on the whole but does have its magical moments.
Rejected
This was enjoyable in a 50's orchestrational chill kind of way. Listened at work while designing something, it was great background music.
pretty good i actually saved some of the songs to my library.
It's a nice album to have on but nothing that I'm crazy about really. I think Cool Jazz is often not my favorite type of jazz, but that doesn't take away that it has a lot of great performances and sounds going on
ja ganz chill für nebenbei
This is all just a bit too film soundtrack for me. I think I prefer a certain smokiness ... where everyone is both totally together, but all over the place at the same time. It's all very good, obviously. But I didn't get lost in it ... I was very aware of the exit signs, if you know what I mean.
Amazing musicians, great arrangements, brilliant recording, great sound. Everyone over 30 must know 'Take Five' and that's the only one I'd heard before. I like the opener with the really busy piano and then the sudden change of pace to swinging jazz, then mixing the two tempos. After that it's all very accomplished but almost too clean, nice background music but I doubt I'll listen again. I can see why it was popular though.
Classic jazz album, with of course 'Take Five', one of the best known music pieces in 5/4. Despite its experimentation with unconventional time signatures, the album did not feel particularly exciting to me, but I suppose back in 1959 this was very ground-braking.
Take five is iconic, the album as a whole a bit too flat.
overall a good jazz album that is quite laid back as it is quick. good show.
Very chill :-) Reminds me of growing up and watching my parents drink wine outside
- 1/7 songs added to main playlist - Not really sure what to go in expecting - Blue Rondo… is something I’ve never heard before - Can see Strange Meadow Lark ending up on some paintings playlists - Take Five — it’s crazy in this project how many songs you realize you’ve heard before - I’m a sucker for a waltz - Favorite song: Everybody’s Jumpin’
A lot of this is the kind of jazz you stereotypically snap your fingers to, the kind of music that makes the toe tapping in a jazz club rock the whole building, and that is to say, very exciting for cool jazz, but very basic in a modern sense. This is often considered one of the best of its time, and I can see the appeal. The playing is all top notch, and the arrangements are also unique. I also love the use of piano, really selling to me some tracks that would've otherwise been exactly ehat I expected from this album. Unfortunately, it's a little too far between piano passages, and I get warped right back to that cool jazz club, where everyone is having a good time, but I just can't tap along. Not as much as I want to, any way.
Take Five.
It was overall not bad, but not my favorite jazz like some of the other albums I have heard. Not as smooth as I usually enjoy.
We all love jazz until it's played for us. I have to admit this was very pleasant and managed to stay fresh with interesting transitions
Take Five is so recognizable, but I am not sure from what...nice Monday morning work music.
Relaxing & chill. Not a huge jazz fan, but this was pretty nice.
Nice.
3 Iiiiit’s a jazz album! Look, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m completely uncultured in this area of music, but I’m trying. However, despite my best attempts here (I listened to this like five times over the course of three days), I still just don’t get it. By no means would I say it’s something that I dislike (it definitely would not have gotten five plays out of me if so), but it just doesn’t speak to me in any particular way. I saw a lot of acclaim surrounding this album in my background research, but I have no idea what it has or does that other jazz albums don’t - hell, in some ways it even felt safer than some of the other jazz I’ve heard. To its credit, that also means there wasn’t any kind of annoying bullshit going on at any point, but the highest praise I can give this album was that it was acceptable background music. I would even go as far as to say it’s decent music to get work done to, but at the end of the day, if your music makes me think of work, it’s probably not something I’m kind to be overly fond of. This is the kind of thing that, when played at a dinner party or bar, makes me question if I’m with my kind of crowd - though, my type of bar typically involves bathrooms with shattered mirrors, broken toilets, and stickers/graffiti covering every inch of the wall, so do with that what you will.
I´m not really into jazz but it´s a nice listen and just because of "Take Five" I give it the three stars. 2,5
Sounds familiar to something.
Great Jazz album to enjoy in the background, but Jazz is not a style that i would sit down and listen to necessarily. it is a good album
Nice and smooth
Not really my kind of music but very skilled piano playing and found it fairly enjoyable
Really good music. Not a jazz lover but I do love the piano.
Can't believe I knew so many of these. This was good
A couple of very well known tracks on here. Couldn't help feeling I was listening to the Monsters Inc soundtrack
sehr schön, ist aber halt Jazz; kann man sich mal anhören, aber nicht dauerhaft
really enjoyed it, was so nice to do homework to 😝🤤
I wish all the songs sounded like take five cuz I really like that song 😞
wild to be the artist who has the most lingering popular example of a *time signature*.
Jazz is not My type of music.
Pleasant jazz, and it's not often you can say that.
Easy listen jazz with a little bit of energy. I enjoyed this but it did not blow me away.
Mostly just pleasant, but take five gets it to , three stars
Elevator Jazz
Are all these jazz records towing in me? Don’t know but this was alright. Sax sounds great.
6/10 This worked about as well as a pure jazz album does for me Just the right mix of actual tunes and improv/challenging Extremely well recorded and mastered, the drums in particular sound amazing Probably better as background music rather than foreground Best: Take Five
It's nice to hear some cool jazz on this list, and this is a solid example of it. It makes great background music, where you can zone in and out from what you are working on when you need some cool music or a song catches you for a minute or two before you go back to something more active.
Good listen with a classic in there too!!
3.5
Not my usual thing but I like jazz from time to time.
Enjoyed the listen
something i would listen to while having a fancy dinner with someone special
I swear they modelled the gambling music in super Mario 64 Ds on this
Pleasant
There's a lot of similarities between this type of classical music and metal. If there was distortion on these instruments and a singer, it'd be heavy as hell. Cool listen. Like most instrumental music, this would be benefit from a live setting where one can watch what is going on.
We've heard Take Five so often it may have dulled our senses. Yeah interesting things were happening (Coltrane anyone?) elsewhere, but think for a moment how enduring that song has been and think of it as a gateway drug into time. It even makes 4/4 sound more interesting. I know shit about jazz (and everything else for that matter) but I know this makes you pay attention.
I found this to be both energizing and relaxing at the same time. Short, sweet and thoroughly enjoyable.
I'm sure this is not a popular thing to say but...jazz bores me. I'm sure it's because I don't understand music composition and rhythm and beats and all the other things that the musicians understand, which provides insight and appreciation. Sure Take Five is cool and I'm down with jazz in the background of a smoky bar. I loved Ortliebs Jazz House back in the day. But I'm just never gonna seek out these sounds.
This was a cool album. It's always funny to listen to something and realize you know a song off of it. I can say I enjoyed it but I don't think it's something I would listen to often.
Not my style
This was a cool album, I actually recognized a few of the songs from movies. Nice listen.
From track two to finish, this is just great! I love listening to this in the morning
Jazz that is easy to listen to for people that don’t like jazz. No oomph though. Everybody knows Take Five, which is the highlight for me. The rest is a bit snoozy.
Listened Before? N Good jazz album. Very mellow and jammy. I really enjoyed this one. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Take Five
Side Pocket!
This gelt so fancy and cool i felt like i was a really rich person eating a picnic in the middle of a park in june.
Nice background music
lítill djassmaður. en þetta er áferðarfallegt og notalegt kaffihúsadót.
Frokostjazz… ment på den mest positive måde, hyggeligt, legende og ud af stand til støde nogen.
Morgenmads jazz.. Fungerede fint til dét. Sætter det sikkert aldrig på igen. Der var selvfølgelig sangen... Den som man har hørt før. Det var sjovt nok.
Pure jazz no lyrics.
Excellent Jazz. One hit song from the chill out compilations of similar from the 2000s
Enjoyable jazz!?
Typically, I'm annoyed with this genre, but this has some nice mellow tracks which I could stand.
Nice. A bit too 'lounge jazz' for me. I never got the feeling the band was trying to tell me anything, just show me their chops. And it was just a little bit too pleased with itself. High quality easy listening.
It was good jazz. I liked it but it’s jazz
Nice jazz album
Nice jazz? Chilled and well played not super interested but good as restaurant backing
it is jazz and i am not sophisticated
Seminal soprano sax tune. Blue rondo, take five meaningful highlights, but the rest doesn't feel so exceptional
Enjoyed the famous ones, otherwise just fine
That was fun but not super memorable. Recognize the first song
Not my type of thing, but it was alright. More like background music 3 ⭐️
This is as good as jazz gets for me. 3.75
Its definitely music, I completely expect someone who know more about music than me to really love this as it give of that vibe. For my uneducated ears, its very Jazz and its the kinda Jazz you would play to make people think you like jazz. I don't really like Jazz so I'll stick with Limp Bizkit
Suddenly, mid album - I know this one, that famous one that's been in adverts? Films? Probably.
Great sounds, not my style. Totally respect the music though.
Oh hey Take Five, I know this one. Generally chill, though I may be lulled into a coma in my current state.
Nice easy listening Jazz. Take 5 was my favorite.
Smooth and bouncy. Enjoyed but not something I would put on for myself.
Relaxing with some nice bass lines. Great build up to the finale of blue rondo. As soon as the song “take five” came on I knew it straight away. Such a classic piece. I could see myself listening to something like this in a whiskey bar with a cigar. Feels more like background music. Overall the album drowned into the background and became mostly forgettable. Take five being the only track to remain in my memory. Overall, not a bad album but nothing great. I’d give it a 3/5 thanks to take five.
TlL that "Time out" is performed by the Dave Brubeck quartet most known song of the album. This album is in a different planet and made me feel good while gardening, which is what I was doing while I listened to it, although I would add this on my Lounge folder.... 3.5/5
★★★½
Great jazz album - amazing it came out in the fifties
Good, but nothing breathtaking. Liked Take Five, of course, but already knew that one.
Really love the vibes. It’s giving Banana Fish x Olive Garden
I’m old, but I don’t think I’m “I appreciate jazz” years old yet. Three stars just because I don’t know how what to make of it one way or the other.
Lekker als achtergrond hoor. Zelfde jaar als waarin mijn pa geboren is. Drie sterren.
Lekker achtergrond deuntje
"Time Out" by The Dave Brubeck Quartet is a groundbreaking jazz album that remains a timeless classic. Released in 1959, this album revolutionized jazz with its innovative time signatures and distinctive compositions. The standout track, "Take Five," is a jazz standard that features a mesmerizing 5/4 time signature, showcasing the quartet's unparalleled musicianship. Other tracks, such as "Blue Rondo à la Turk" and "Three to Get Ready," further demonstrate Brubeck's mastery of complex rhythms and melodies. What makes "Time Out" exceptional is its ability to be both accessible and complex. The album's melodies are catchy and memorable, yet its rhythmic intricacies challenge the listener's expectations. Overall, "Time Out" is a testament to The Dave Brubeck Quartet's creativity and innovation, making it a must-listen for jazz enthusiasts and music lovers alike.
It wasn’t hard jazz, it was soft. Ah fuck, I really don’t know what to say about soft jazz. It was… ok 3 stars
Take Five was a bit of a banger, but in general not my cup of tea. Simpsons: Take Five used in an episode
Was alright. Time Out an decent recognisable tune.
Feels incredibly lounge-y, a couple of fairly interesting time signatures that feel especially apparent in Blue Rondo a la Turk. Not something I'd put on often.
Nice but not my thing
It’s hard to divorce what this album actually represents from what it has become. Not a hot take, but this is stock jazz, elevator music, grocery store soundtrack stuff. And rightfully so. It’s beautiful, classy, palatable. Take five has a great vibe and will always be a banger. Not much here for me though. I am leaning toward two stars, but will give it an extra star because of how talented everyone involved is.
Smooth. I enjoyed the use of many different time signatures.
A really lovely jazz album. Cool how it plays around with time signatures.
Jazzy
I enjoyed listening to it while cleaning, but I won’t be able to listen to this at any other time - wish I was sophisticated enough, but I’m not. Standout track: - Take Five 5/5
Take five is an iconic song. This is not my normal listening. But I love it for cooking or baking music!
This jazz album is far better than most
Not bad for a jazz album. Laid back and chill vibe
