Reviews (page 4 of 13)
Excellent album start to finish. Have never gone out of my way to listen to Linkin Park, but definitely a few tracks to add to some Playlists. Love the energy.
loved it very emotional but hits
Great tunes
Biased, but it’s a great record. Very influential I’d say, even if a bit repetitive
The first album ever gifted to me (minus the baha men but I'm not sure if that counts). Super moody and one of the pinnacles of the rap rock/numetal genres. RIP chester as so many great formative songs came on this one. It is a little intense and not the easiest listening but for one step closer and in the end alone it gets a nostalgia 4 stars.
Love linkin park and this album. Happy to see it on the list.
4.5
awesome album
I mean at this point you know what this album is. You were either with it during the time or you weren’t.
Absolute straight classic. Bought this on import when it came out and saw their first ever UK show in a college bar in London. Still slaps
Reminds me to my wilder and younger days, although I wasn‘t young anymore at the date of release of this album. It‘s rough but I like it.
Certified hood classic. Straight from my childhood. 10/10.
This whole album rocks and is timeless. It does bring back my teenage angist years and I love it.
ENERGETIC BOMB! I love to do garden work with it
I remember the moment when I heard them for the first time. The album was on sale, but it was far from popular, so I bought it in a Minsk disk store because I liked the cover. Despite the fact that I've listened to almost nothing but Nirvana and Dream Theatre, I liked these guys. Very cool combination of long rough overdriven drive, overdriven vocals and subtle melody with voluminous reverb. When I listened to them, I didn't know English and didn't understand the meaning of the lyrics. But the lyrics turned out to be quite strong too. They remind me something of J Mors, which came out strongly because of the timbre of Pugach's voice and the lyrics. Here plus more interesting guitars, melancholy and almost metal tendencies. This is a very cool album that you should definitely listen to.
Forfeit the game before somebody else Takes you out of the frame And puts your name to shame Cover up your face, you can't run the race The pace is too fast, you just won't last
Fantastic.
love it
Rap rock? Rock rap? Either way, it's a great album. I like crossover albums like crossover cuisine...mexican and sushi, asian and anything. Nothing wrong with blending. Often times you get a better version of both.
I love this album! Such a classic. So much nostalgia with this album. I remember when I heard this album for the first time. I was blown away. The two vocalists back-and-forth. Singing, rapping, screaming. It was amazing at 16. RIP Chester. A Place for My Head best song on the album
Love you chester
MY FAVORITE
I loved it. The scratching and guitars we're very well executed. 5/5
Awesome
Epic burst of energy
i‘ve listened to this album hundreds of times over the last couple of years
I'd honestly forgotten how good this album is.
I know this album frontwards and backwards. It was one of my favorites as an early teen. It made me sad listening to it thinking of Chester.
Know it, love it.
linkin park was one of my favorite bands growing up, so i was thrilled to see this on here. i think this album holds up pretty well and the production is slick, but at the same time it's definitely a product of its time. it flows well and has a bunch of amazing tracks, but there's definitely some filler here too. one of my biggest gripes with linkin park now that I'm in my 30s is that their lyrics are just incredibly vague. maybe that helps them be relatable to more people like i thought in middle school, but they just don't really say anything. they're far from the only band at this time that had this problem, but they're one of the most prominent examples i can think of. with that said, the music here is great. you can really get a sense for the variety of styles and backgrounds from the people who collaborated on these tracks. reanimation was my first linkin park album (which i bought as a young teen from barnes and noble back in probably 2004) and those are the versions of these tracks i knew the best for the longest time. while i enjoy the hybrid theory versions of most of them more, the creativity and new spins put on these songs for reanimation is exciting and fresh. it was really cool and inspiring to see a band constantly reinventing their sound and individual tracks at this time in my life. favorites: papercut, one step closer, crawling, runaway, in the end, forgotten, pushing me away
One of the most influential albums of the early '00s. If you listen to any top modern rock list today in 2024, you'll be able to see the massive influence Linkin Park still has on music.
I am 100% biased but I still want to comment: The album is build to be listened as a whole, the mixture between hip-hop and rock as well as Chester's wide vocal range, make this album an unskipable jewel.
This is one of my favorite all time albums. I think alot of people can relate to the lyrics in most of the songs. Such a shame Chester Bennington is gone. But then I guess his pain is reflected in his songs.
Best ever
Absolutely love it. My alltime LP favorite :)
9/10
I haven't listened to this in 12+ years yet I still know every word.
🤘🤘🤘
Classic
A classic of nu metal
Probably my favourite album we have had so far. Every song on this is great. Had to listen to Meteora and Minutes to Midnight after. So nostalgic
Absolute gold Still great after all these years, good combination of rock/rap In the end Papercut Are my favourites, there’s only 1 that I don’t like, and only the start
Love this one! RIP Chester :(
Banger
this is so fresh, i love them so much. they commited all the way to their emo shit and slayed
5*
In the End this was a Cure for the Itch. Felt One Step Closer to A Place for My Head with this album.
Never been a Linkin Park fan but I do like some of their songs. I am well aware of this album but never listened to it cover to cover. It is smooth. And for me, even observing from afar, that's what always set them apart from other nu-metal bands. There's a lot of melody to their anger and frantic musical stylings. Papercut is a great example of this and opener to the album. One Step Closer is a bit more abrasive, and I don't love every segment of it, but I always get amped by "shut up when I'm talking to you!" I should've listened to this album a long time ago. It is excellent. I especially like how the rapping (by Mike Shinoda) and singing (by Chester Bennington) mix together. They also do a good job mixing standard instruments and synth and turntables. On top of the other big singles (Crawling, In the End), there are so many other great songs (With You, By Myself, A Place For My Head - maybe my favorite). No holes, except maybe Cure for the Itch. No wonder it is diamond-certified.
Bloody hell this album was excellent. I feel like Linkin Park's sound is so unique; the way they go from these beautiful, gentle, stripped back moments into big, full, intense crescendos. I've heard quite a few of the individual tracks, but I feel like the album works so well as a whole. I know I have a 5 star on my hands when it finishes and I'm disappointed!
Love it, incredible music. RIP Chester :,(
crazy rock
extremely good
I admit I’m a bit biased as I did have this album growing up, but it still holds up amazingly well! I kept listening expecting to find at least one dud somewhere but nope, enjoyed the entire album all over again. There is something about Chester’s energy.
When this came out I couldn't stop listening to it.
A top album of all time. Pure genius from LP
Still fuckin' bangs
bro REALLY needs some therapy
Chester definitely needed therapy and we didn't see it. Banger after banger, with only one song that doesn't seem to live up to it
In my country, In the End is one of the most popular songs from foreign music. Many people of my generation also started to fall in love with rock music in general through Linkin Park, especially with their early days. And most of them, if asked, will choose Hybrid Theory as their favorite (or even further, most favorite) among other albums in 2000s, probably 2000s music overall, and me is not exception (though It doesn't mean their music is superior to all music came from the same era). (I rank it 5 not 4, just for personal preference) Fav Track: Forgotten
Very good
Awesome.
a true rock classic
Oh yes the teenage years
Let me make this clear: there is absolutely no chance in hell I am rating this below a 5 going into it. This is such a seminal album of my childhood, it's already locked in. Alright, let's listen. Yep, of course this held up for me. Pretty much every song is a hot, and they're all pretty much in regular rotation for me, especially for working out. I know the lyrics play into the psyche of typically angsty teens, but they really do a better job than most artists at describing those feelings artistically. Chester's singing is iconic, Shinoda's rapping is a perfect change of pace, and the instrumentation kicks ass. Favorite track: Papercut
i fucking have this album and i love it to death 5/5
One of my all time favorite albums. Classic. RIP Chester
Album shaped my music taste as a kid. Perfect
It was really hard to rate this album. This album and 'Meteora' were albums that became insanely popular when I was young, so there are quite strong nostalgia connected to this for me. Which raises the question of how good it really is. Somehow it doesn't feel super modern anymore, but I can't put my finger on whether it's because I haven't been listening to this type of music for long or whether it's something else. Having mostly heard the big hits before like 'Papercut', 'In the End', 'One Step Closer', 'Crawling', 'A Place for My Head', I have to say that I can't find that many songs that are actually bad. I think I will have to give this a weak 5 star, just because I can't really find any reason not to. It's just overall filled with good songs. I don't necessarily enjoy it as much as I would've back in the day, but I still think it's objectively really good. And when it came out it was quite groundbreaking.
Amazing album that uniquely expresses the dark, confusing and often negative feelings of adolescence and growing up. Chester’s way of clearly conveying the emotions that ultimately led to his suicide is beautiful and poetic.
An absolute banger infused with nostalgia, even though the only connection I had with LP was 1 song on Tap Tap Revenge + my classmates hyping about them
This was one of my first favorite albums. It's crazy how it still so prevelant today and the words seem to have adjusted to the world around them.
Classic
For a debut album, this set the bar high. For me, this has to be one of the best albums of the 20th century. Linkin Park is one of my all-time favourite bands, every track on this is an absolute banger and as a whole this album only serves to make one miss the presence of Chester Bennington all the more. There will never be anyone quite like him. 5/5
Bangers all round
Top 3 #2 One Step Closer #5 Crawling #8 In The End (#12 Pushing me Away is an honourable mention)
This was one of the first albums I remember listening to when I was younger. The first half of the album is definitely stronger than the second half, despite "In The End" being on the second half. Even with how overplayed "In the End" was back in the day, I do still feel like it is the best song on the album. It was incredibly easy to dive right back in to this album and listen all the way through.
- instant 5/5
Nice rough rock vibes. Thoroughly enjoyed the listen.
that was fun!
I'm biased, because I bought this when it came out and listened to it on repeat until I knew just about every single track by heart. 10/5 amazing album from a voice we'll sadly never hear again.
Great album! Been a fan since they started.
Childhood Album!
ahh I feel like an edgy teen again
Love this one. Lots of memories. RIP Chester.
Nostalgic.
*Great* album. Tremendous mix of hard edged guitars, gritty vocals, heavy lyrics and perfectly designed rhymes. This album is so good, it’s hard to believe that it is the band’s first album. Every song is produced to perfectly blend heavy metal and rap/hip-hop. It’s hard to pick out a favorite, but "Cure for the Itch" feels like filler. The magic occurs when the lyrics, raps, scratching, samples and guitars all play off one another.
Favorieten: Papercut, With You, Crawling, By Myself, In the End, Forgotten, Pushing Me Away
100 the whole way through 🔥
Masterpiece
Brings me right back to highschool. This is hands down LP's best album.
One of the first albums I ever bought, peak 15 year old nu metal angst. The lyrics are undeniably general cringe but I think it's musically better than a lot of similar bands and the singing/rapping combo was a revelation to a teenager who didnt listen to much outside of pop punk. I was never a Linkin Park megafan in the way I was obsessed with SOAD around the same time but I loved them all the same. Saw them headline Leeds the first year we went straight after getting GCSE results, half a lifetime ago. Can't really objectively review this, but it's a massive 5 from me.
I vividly remember playing Championship Manager on my PC and having all my ripped CDs playing in the background on RealPlayer. This was one of those albums that looped around with Jimmy Eat World's Bleed American, Green Day's Warning, Eminem's Marshal Mathers LP, Blink 182's Enema of the State and Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavorured Water. Like "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavorured Water" teenage me would have given this 5 stars without question. Now I find myself questioning that, its a good album and I throughly enjoyed all the tracks (except "Cure for the Itch" which I always hated) but is it 5 star great? Chester's voice is incredible and got better as their albums went on, it's a damn shame we won't hear anything more from him. As I've grown up and changed so has Linkin Park's sound, and I do prefer some of their later albums. But reading some of the public 1 star reviews shows me this is not getting anything lower than a 5. Fuck all the haters, this is a great album. P.S. In Champ Man I did get Aston Villa to the Champions League final and I definitely didn't save scum ;-)
My sister was the LP fan in the family, but I heard this album indirectly so many times that I know all the songs. Must be the nostalgia, but this album is really really good.
A favorite
god damn i forgot about this one!!! i love linkin park, thankfully during last tattoo session sasha reminded me of it! <3
petica ko kuca, no brainer
my childhood length
Classics. They will always sound modern. Best sound for a young, teenage heart.
This brings back some memories and it's better than I remember. Such a good debut album. 5/5
memoriezzzz
This album was my biggest surprise so far. I didn't think I could love a metal album. I especially didn't think I could love songs containing that growling vocal style. In fact, just the other day I was talking to someone about not liking metal because of the vocals (she was agreeing). It's more than mere dislike for me. I find metal growling unlistenable. Usually, anyway. Because for some reason, I could take it with this album. This list has had a lot of these really intense rock/metal albums, and I've usually tended to rate them quite lowly. Not only because I'm not a fan of the sound, but also because they tended to have extremely sexually explicit lyrics that aren't well written. Not Linkin Park. The lyrics on this album are intelligent, powerful and meaningful. Not only that but they were... relatable? In fact, I was not ready for how much I related to the lyrics. Every song hit me in the gut in a way I'm not sure I've ever experienced. It was more than just "I relate to these songs." The lyrics were my exact feelings, my exact experience and my exact struggles. Honestly, I could've written some of them myself. It was so intensely cathartic. I actually cried twice, and came very close several other times. And no, I'm not even going to complain about the musical side of things, despite it getting a bit too intense for my usual palate. How could I complain when the music supports the lyrics so well? It just drives them home even more, making the whole experience even more intense, even more cathartic and even more powerful. Seriously, there is not a bad track on here (except maybe that goofy interlude, but it was so short that it's basically insignificant). My favourites were obviously the ones that hit me the hardest, and that I related to the most. However, even the songs I related to less were so well done that I ended up loving them anyway. Favourite tracks: Crawling, One Step Closer, With You, In the End, By Myself, Runaway
This is somewhat of a holy grail to me in my childhood. I breathed this album, can dream it from front to back. This album had such a huge influence on other music I would discover in the following years. The melting pot of rock, metal, hiphop and electronics is perfectly displayed here By far my favorite of their works, and I feel so lucky to have seen them once and several of these songs in concert! I miss this band and Chester dearly. 9 out of 10
Album #10 In 2000, I saw a commercial for this album on MTV. It featured a brief clip of the One Step Closer music video. I saw these two nu-metal guys with dyed hair yelling in what I recall being an alley. I immediately wrote them off. The first time someone played Papercut for me, I realized that I had made a serious mistake. By the end of 2001, I knew this album backwards and forwards. I even began scouring the Internet for demos, bootlegs and other rarities. Linkin Park was the soundtrack of my college experience. I felt like all of my awkward teenage feelings had been validated through their songs. And the music itself stood out because it truly was a hybrid of so many styles. 5* from me for just so many reasons.
A timeless classic. 5/5 crazy this the first album it feeds me
This was one of my favourite albums for a while when it first came out. Still remember it well and haven't listened to it in years.
so iconic 10/10
Love this shit. Chester has such a cool voice. This music was so exciting when I first heard it. It felt like it was made for an angsty teen and that was me. The layering of the different instruments and tracks is absolutely over-produced. They are among the nu metal bands that has a DJ to add in synthetic sounds like drums and other flourishes. It all sounds very artificial. But awesome. I have unfortunately never seen them live before and not sure what quality of show they can produce in-person. Sad about what happened to Chester, but I still like Mike Shinoda quite a lot as a producer and artist.
This album defined my grade 7 year. At the time this music was super unique and groundbreaking - so many genres mixed together. Excellent album from start to finish. There isn't a bad track even if CRAWWLLLLING INNNNN MYYY SKINNN is meme-worthy. Forgotten and Runaway are bangers. I wish this band kept doing this kind of sound - Meteora was great but everything after that got worse and worse imo. RIP Chester.
When listening to this album, there’s only one thing you have to do…….SHUT UUPPPPPP
I will happily listen to this
Brilliant!!!!
Absolute banger, a classic
Their sound was different than anything else when this album came out. I loved it then and still do.
Back then at 10 years old this was the coolest, most perfect album. Now, it's about a 4/10. I don't expect grown ass men who never listened to this growing up to give a crap. Hearing it now in full it is mostly just cringy with angsty lyrics. There are some cool 'hard' beats to get you through it. Chester was always incredible, though. A pure nostalgia rating from me, as I still like it. Favorite song is Papercut.
10/10
A classic nu metal album I love dearly
Great album, initially found the rapping bits quite weird but, fuck yeah. Great energy
Amazing. Chester has a great voice, and it had many catchy songs. Easy 5/5
How many solid songs can we fit on one album? Well most of them is the answer as we fly through this angst filled black balloon filled with the unimaginable pain of life and suffering. Even twenty three years later I can still remember nearly all the songs which shows the impact it had on me as a teenager and the small recess in my brain it shall forever live.
I'm not sure I enjoyed it as much as when I was a teen, but a definite 5 for the nostalgia factor. I was obsessed with this album for about a year.
I like it
Oh man I can smell my used 4banger Mustang with the sweet ass aftermarket CD Player blasting the hell out of this cd. RIP Chester.
One of the albums that stayed with me during my teenage years. Listening to this brought back so many heartfelt memories: old friendships, watching MTV, my very first job… There are so many things that come to mind, but think that most of them were probably mentioned by others, so I’m keeping it short. It is one of the finest nu metal works. With a extremely accessible sound and reduced cringe levels, this work introduced that trend to lots of people. An almost flawless list of songs and great artwork. It’s one of this albums you like more the deep cuts than the singles.
Love this album
Wonderful!
Rating: 10/10
Childhood and adulthood all rolled up into one shouty rappy ball of brilliance.
Childhood favourite, still love it.
An album I know, love and still listen to. Hell, I'm playing it for my kids for them to get to love it also.
This will get a 5 regardless, however I want to give it an updated chance to be absorbed into my developed musical tastes. I grew up thinking this album was one of the coolest things ever. It was rap rock, but never did I feel it was corny. Chester had exceptional talent and the rapping always fit nicely. Dj + rock instrumentals were fresh and eye-opening for a genre defining sound. I relistened intently to see if I could get some sense of that rush, like chasing a drug high. Chester was unbelievable, so melodic but damn the scream can just convey so much angst and pain at one time, while still being enjoyable. With you is a passionate and powerful song, love to hear it through s refreshed lens. Crawling is a great mashup of electronic overlays on a rock track, beautifully melded. The chorus is electric and the emotion is visceral. So many great tracks in this album, so much expansion of rock into new spaces. Other tired to copy but paled in comparison. Linkin Park were supreme.
Childhood/teenage memories unlocked! It's a all killer no filler record after all this years.
Well well well. I think we had meteora on here and I had mentioned that was my first Linkin Park album. This one came shortly after and solidified this band as one of the greats. A new sound at the dawn of the millennium that was a beautiful mashup of rap, metal, punk, and rock. Beyond the regular instruments you had Mr Hahn on the synths and dj-ing on top of Mike Shinoda’s hip hop dance and the late Chester B’s howls. Side note, it was foolish of anyone to assume that man wasn’t hurting as almost every single song on all the albums references pain and sadness to one degree or another. But what truly makes me love this album (beyond its sister album Reanimation) are the lyrics. I’d argue this album against almost any other of any genre for its biting and timely lyrics. Every single word and rap is perfectly placed and not only tells a story, but flows like water. Whether it’s through screams or raps. This was an album I often sang while running or just in general so all the lyrics are second nature. So since I love every song on here I’ll call out some choice lyrics from each. Papercut: it’s like I’m paranoid, looking over my back. Like a whirlwind inside of my head, I can’t stop what I’m hearing within. It’s like the face inside is right beneath my skin. One Step Closer: All these words they make no sense, I find bliss in ignorance. Less I hear the less you’ll say. With You: when things go wrong I pretend the past isn’t real. Now I’m trapped in this memory and I’m left in the wake of the mistake. (Also excellent Hahn track at the end) Points of Authority: forfeit the game before somebody else takes you out of the frame, puts your name to shame. Cover up your face, you can’t run the race the pace is too fast you just won’t last. Crawling: my walls are closing in. Without a sense of confidence and I’m convinced that’s there’s just too much pressure to take Runaway: graffiti decorations under a sky of dust, a constant wave of tension on top of broken trust. By Myself: do I trust some and get fooled by phoniness, or do I trust nobody and live in loneliness. In The End: I kept everything inside and even thought I tried it all fell apart. What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when I tried so hard and got so far but in the end it doesn’t even matter. (This song really hits hard losing Chester) A Place For My Head: The sun doesn’t give life to the moon assuming the moons gonna owe it one. Makes me think of how you act to me you do favors then rapidly turn around and start asking me about things that you want back from me (what a metaphor) Forgotten: the memory is now like the picture was then, when the papers crumpled up it can’t be perfect again (I like the Reanimation version better) Cure for the Itch: ladies and gentleman, Mr Hahn Pushing Me Away: even the people who never frown eventually breakdown (so true, also prefer the Reanimation version) So yeah this is a five star. Needed this one today…RIP Chester.
Big time nostalgia album here. Alex put us all on to Linkin Park, including Dad. I do think this was my favorite of their albums, it's got a constant flow of banger tracks. Undeniably heavy-hitting riffs and power chords, great melodies throughout. They're dipping their toes into nu-metal I'd say, but they're a more accessible rock band for a lot of people. I think that's due to the clarity of the vocals, even at the points where Chester is screaming or Mike Shinoda is rapping. And the lyrics are simple, but strong and contemplative. The messages are all pretty good, helping emo kids come to grips with negative emotions and the unfairness of the world around them. "I tried so hard, and got so far. But in the end, it doesn't even matter." How do you make that sentiment into a catchy, heavy rock chorus? I would love to know how many fathers connected with their kids through this music. Wikipedia says it's the best selling rock album of the 21st century, and I'm not surprised. I was going to give this a 4.5, knowing that nostalgia is elevating it perhaps undeservedly, but then "Place for My Head" came on. "I watch how the moon sits in the sky on a dark night, shining with the light from the sun. But the sun doesn't give the light to the moon assuming the moon's gonna owe it one." KILLER track. That's enough to tip the scales. This is a fiver. Favorite tracks: Place for My Head, Crawling, Papercut, By Myself, Runaway, One Step Closer, almost all of it. Album art: Time has made this one iconic, even though it's maybe not that strong on its own. A graffiti figure on a concret wall with dragonfly wings. Has never meant much to me, but it has aged gracefully. 5/5
my adolescence
Love this album. So many good songs.Best nu-metal band.Chester’s voice is so good and yeah the rapping might seem a bit dated now but it’s still amazing.
What a proper album. The production is absolutely perfect. Not too polished, but tight and the songs carry the same sound giving the songs a cohesive belonging. Chester’s voice carries the album while the unique blend of hip hop and hardcore create something so tough but vulnerable. In the end, pun intended, you have a masterpiece in a genre that very few achieve such recognition and success in.
Major sentimental throwback to my youth here and very happy that even 20 years later I still rate the album as high as back then
Love this album, have it on vinly
Love Linkin Park!
Awesome album from a awesome band.
Love love love
Love it
Holds up. Still goes H A R D.
Yet another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex That said, it's still a favourite of mine. I'd listen to this all the time back then... and still often do now!
RIP to the goat. In the end, it does matter!!!
This album changed my life
The first thing I brought with my first pay-cheque in 2001. An incredible album that I loved then, and love now - with the lyrics hitting even harder. Superb
Since this is one of the first CDs I bought with "my" own money, and it also contained some of the first songs I downloaded as illegal .mp3 files. My emotional memory already ensures a 5-star rating. However, besides my good memories, this album also represents the synthesis of the 2000 rock songs. It represents the feeling of these lost years, with all the remaining angry and revolutionary mindset from the 90s, while also being a preview of all the following musical tendencies of that time: the rap-rock ascension, the emocore feeling that would dominate all the charts of the decade and even a kind of prediction of what would become trap/hip-hop for the next decade, incorporating all the angry (and sadness) of the 90s and 2000s accumulated. Meteora is a better Linkin Park album, but this one absolutely is a hors concours for me.
This album is like a teleportation device that instantly brought me back to middle school. I don't think I can separate my nostalgia from an honest music review on this one. Linkin Park were one of the bands that I would consider the soundtrack to my youth. I can clearly remember the first time I heard Linkin Park. I was sitting in the basement listening to Much Music, as a kid in Canada would do in those days. This song came on that was heavy, with screamed vocals, and hip hop mixing going on in the background. I was just starting to dip my toe into the "hard rock/metal" scene at the time, and was also hard into listening to hip hop, so this was a blend of the two music genres I was fond of, so it immediately grabbed my interest. The music video had a super industrial feel to it. Then came Chester's hook in the middle of One Step Closer, where he yells "Shut Up" several times with increasing intensity, and I was hooked. These lyrics immediately spoke to me as I was in my "rebellious youth" phase of life. From the song One Step Closer: "Everything you say to me, Takes me one step closer to the edge, And I'm about to break! I need a little room to breathe, Cause in one step closer to the edge, And I'm about to break!" Chester was saying what I wished I could, so I immediately went to the store "Records on Wheels", bought this album, and proceeded to fan boy everything they put out until into my high school years. I must have listened to this album hundreds of times in those years. Nu metal has always held this stigma that it is an "introduction to metal" which I would agree with. For Someone just trying to get into the metal scene, I was finding that bands like Slayer or Sepultura scared the shit out of me. Bands like Linkin Park or Korn were firmly rooted in the same metal style, but wasn't so abrasive, so it was almost like a stepping stone to the heavier and darker bands of true metal. Chester Bennington's voice was absolutely stellar! I simply love the live video that accompanied the song Given Up, where he held a scream for 17 seconds. Amazing. That powerful voice, coupled with Mike Shinoda's turntable work created this softer, more welcoming metal/hop hop hybrid that just immediately hit with me. Overall, an amazing trip down memory lane to some great times in my life, when things were simpler, and time ran slower. I have a soft spot for this music, this band, and specifically this album that will always be there. RIP Chester, you were a hell of a frontman, and were gone too soon! Favourite songs: In The End, One Step Closer, Papercut, Crawling, Points of Authority, Runaway, A Place For My Head, Forgotten Least favourite song: if forced to pick: Cure for the Itch 5/5
Zalige plaat!
Absolute fucking banger. If this is the genre of music you like, there's not a bad track on the whole album. 8 of the 12 are in my "liked songs" list in Spotify, and even the other 4 are still totally listenable. RIP, Chester. You are definitely missed.
A revelation of an album that still endures today. "In the end, it doesn't even matter." I beg to differ. RIP, Chester. RIP.
What can I say other than this album is everything I want from emo-type rock. It’s not perfect, but it’s one of the best
I was 17 when these guys exploded onto the scene, and I couldn't have been MORE the target audience. Those were some formative years and these guys were part of my identity almost. I played this CD so much it's permanently engraved on my brain, to the extent I could probably not listen to it for another 50 years but still somehow remember all the lyrics. I'm aware that the nostalgia factor has woven its way firmly into my rating, but I think if I heard it for the first time today... I think I'd still be on-board. I'd definitely have some heavy eyerolls at some of the overly-dramatic lyrics. I can't go on! The face inside! Paranoia! Pain! However, I think I'd still massively appreciate how many brilliant hooks and singalong choruses are in here. You can't deny how great some of these songs are. To me these guys hitting when they did, it was lightning in a bottle. Everything came together, riding the nu-metal wave, Chester's raw vocals, Mike Shinoda's rapping, the heavy riffs, the soaring choruses. I love it. What a debut.
I remember when I first saw them on MTV. It was crazy to see Rap and Metal together. Even if they didn't invent it, they helped popularize a new genre. Also, the album is great from A to Z.
5 stars for my favorite so far. Biased maybe but it's still a solid 5 star
Mind
Not a bad song on this album. When I was a freshman in college, "One Step Closer" was a big MTV hit. I bought the cd because back in 2000, I bought the CD of any album that had a song I loved. Upon the first listen, I realized that was a band that was much more than they appeared on the surface. Nu metal is often criticized as mimicking other genres but comes off like it's trying to hard. This album has elements of metal/screaming, hip hop, and melodic rock and it does all of it exceptionally well. This might be one of my favorite albums we've had yet.
There arent many albums I can point to that really set off my love for music but this is one of them. There probably isn't an album I've listened to more in my life than this. RIP Chester and thanks for everything you did for me and music as a whole.
On nostalgia alone I would give this 5 stars. However I can’t do that so I give it 5 stars for Chester’s haunting vocals and defining a generation of alternative rockers.
I've listened to this album so many times and I love it! Probably in my top 10 of my favorite albums of all time.
All time favorite.
Mega, immer noch....weckt Emotionen u Erinnerungen
CRAWLING IN MY SKINNNNNNN THESE WOUNDS THEY WILL NOT HEAAAAAALLLLLLLLL So many classics 5 stars
Modern classic
One of the big listens of nu-metal and a replacement for the punk of our parents.
I remember when the follow-up album Meteora came out and I was a 12-year old kid trying to figure out his tastes in music and I heard Numb on MTV and it was the best thing ever. Some years later, I derided Linkin Park as way too mainstream and "Not real metal". A few years after that, my musical horizons expanded again. "Real metal" was not the defining criteria for good music anymore and I rediscovered Linkin Park for what they were: a very good band that produced an accomplished mix of styles and put them together into an angry and angsty, yet shining and mass-appealing package. Now, it's been quite a while since I last listened to them. And I don't think this will ever be a record that I spin on repeat - too shallowly angry for that. But I enjoyed this one spin a lot and still think they were a great band. Now let me revisit Meteora as well.
Super duper
Good for trainning
This is the album that got me into music. Still one of my favorites of all time.
Linkin Park is such a weird band. Accused of making the same record over and over, they release something completely different but it sucks. Accused of being to squeaky clean, they try to dirty up their image with a remix album that was explicit lyrics. It looked desperate and they still seemed like a bunch of nice boys, which I am sure they hated. Meanwhile, this record is a legit banger. The perfect album for the end of FM radio rock.
God
classic
Blinded by nostalgia here. More proof as to why Linkin Park is my favorite band of all-time. These songs carry such emotional significance for me, as they introduced me to music, and are probably the foundation of my taste in punk rock today. To be totally fair, the lyrics here are very surface-level. I never felt like Chester was a brilliant lyricist, but he always wrote with raw unfiltered emotion. Which ultimately led to plain and derivative lines that Chester sold incredibly well with some of the best vocal control I've ever heard. The hooks are catchy, the screams are cathartic and it feels like every song could have been a single. Hybrid Theory is one of the most iconic albums of the 2000s. It's not LP's best record (forever a Thousand Suns superfan), but it is their most important. RIP Chester. Favorite songs: With You, Papercut, By Myself, Points of Authority, One Step Closer, Crawling, A Place For My Head, Forgotten Least favorite songs: N/A (In The End, I guess?) P.S. when I hear any song on this album, I think of Club Penguin, because I discovered LP in 2006 when I was five years old and spending every day playing the Club Penguin pizza game and watching LP/Club Penguin music videos on YouTube, like this: https://youtu.be/vCbY-9hZxwE
Amazing album, amazing band
Genre defining—(how do I still know 90% of these words
Phenomenal debut album. Easily one of their strongest offerings and one of the best nu-metal offerings of the time.
Just such a great album. A forever classic.
Personally a 5 because this just launched my love of music. But know this album is more of a 3.5
There are 2 memories I associate with this album. I remember buying this album with Christmas money my grandma gave me in 4th grade. And the second is being at my friends on his trampoline. He had outdoor speakers on his house, it was this album and limp bizkit all day on the trampoline. RIP Chester :(
Masterpiece!
Quite possibly my favorite album of all time.
This is unironically really good. Makes me feel like I'm 14 again. THIS OS WHERE YHR CRAWLING IN MY SKIN AONG IS GROM
Had listened before. Very nostalgic, but very bitter sweet considering Chester's decision to take his life in 2017. Will listen again, 5/5
This is the zenith of teenage angst, and the best representation of nu-metal on the list IMO. They balance the metal and hip-hop/electronic elements perfectly. And I know they get a good deal of hate and are seen as posers/sellouts for not cursing, but feeling like the emotional impact is less because someone isn't using naughty words just sounds like edgy middle schooler criticism (though, this is definitely an album aimed at that demographic, so perhaps there is some point there). Shits rad yo. Tight, fun, genre-blending angst.
I mean, LP is one of my favorite bands of all time. Something I will call out beyond the vocal chemistry between Chester and Mike is Joe Hahn, most notably on Cure for the Itch. His presence is the thing that ties the sounds all together in my opinion, with the Nu-Metal presence of electronic and rap sometimes coming across as jarring for other acts.
The best!
just an alround great album with all time greatest "crawling" and obviously "in the end" still consider it one of the best choices i made by going to their concert a month before chester took his own life
This is a good album… The album opens with papercut a song that isn’t necessarily one of my favourites but it’s definitely the sum of all the sounds that you will get on this record. One step closer is a brilliant early album single for this band I love the lyrics to this song from the well crafted verses to the screamy yet catchy chorus! The chorus in with you is so climactic absolutely amazing tune. Points of authority is slightly more tame than the first three songs but it’s still an impressive song. The verses of crawling are very poppy i’am not too sure of they work too well for this band ( or at least at this point).Runaway also feels exactly the same. By myself has this real scream to it’s guitars that make it a really quality song. Most popular single in the end acts as the album’s climax it’s a grand song very different to the rest of the album being piano based what a song! The guitars on a place for my head are amazing just enough to make this one of the albums best. Forgotten is my favourite song on the album literally every aspect of the song impresses me pre chorus, verses, chorus, bridge all perfection! Other than the MR HANNNNNN bit cure for the itch is a cool instrumental but nothing that I would seek out. The album closes with pushing me away it’s really good it’s similar to those more “ mid” songs( crawling, runaway) with the audio dynamics but this is just so much better feels like a grand heavy finale to a near perfect album. Anyway, while this album does have lows it’s still a 5/5 as it’s very hard to deny it’s power.
Another one for the memories! I was always more of a Meteora fan, but Hybrid Theory has a really big place in my heart. Song 'In The End' is extremely catchy, and I know the lyrics still after twenty-ish years. Album starts on a high note with 'Papercut' and it actually just gets better. All around, it's a very even record. With this debut album, Linkin Park position themselves on the Mount Olymp of the Nu Metal wave, and for some (like me), on the very top of it.
Bold and unpredictable. This album doesn't fall into any one category. Lyrically powerful and musically frenetic and energetic. Definitely listenable to again and again.
Overall, the song was pretty good. It seems to be hip-hop, and hip-hop tracks always seem to be above average. (I love hip-hop!)
solid album, kinda reuses the same riffs though
4/5 Favorite Song: One Step Closer
Lots of really good songs combined with 3 pretty terrible songs.
Made me want to run through a brick wall
It was nice to listen to the whole album after having grown up with a couple of the songs.
Ah, nothing like looking back to the early 2000s: Some music was great, some music was shit, but this one was probably the one that kick started most of that. Honestly, this album has aged very well. When I first got it, I kind of expected listening to the album to feel kind of edgy, but surprisingly, most of the songs felt like they came from a genuine place, and were not just edgy for the sake of it, especially songs like Papercut, one of my standout tracks, and Crawling, one of the albums biggest hits. One of the highlights of the album for me was definitely Mike Shinoda’s rapping, which feels less like it’s rapping just for the sake of it, and more like it’s helping to reinforce the themes of Chester Bennington’s sung parts, my favorite of these rapped parts being the opening for A Place For My Head. Bennington’s singing is also impressive on this album, especially on two of my other standouts, Points of Authority and Pushing Me Away. His vocal abilities are very diverse on this album, with his more melodic side being shown on songs like In The End, my final standout song, and others his more intense side, such as One Step Closer. Overall, some may consider this album to be cringy and dated, but for what it is, I think it’s held up pretty well all this time.
This is the first album I actually own on vinyl, but I have never gotten around to listening to it. For a debut album, it is impressive that linkin park have found their sound so quickly and there are no songs that feel out of place. They play a brand of nu metal that is accessible while still sounding tough. If i could critique one thing, some of the songs sound a bit samey. Love turntable scratches in music. Best tracks would be 4,5, and 8. Fun fact this is the highest selling album of 2001. 3.75
Few good linkin park songs in here
Enjoyed more than I thought I would, interesting stuff. First track’s a lot of fun
in my heart im unfortunately still the dorky repressed 12 year old who watched kingdom hearts AMVs. i was looking for AOT crack but i digress. 3.7-4.2. more late 90s rnb than previously thought. crackers ignored the ones where shinoda was doing his best busta rhymes™️ for the eminen flows. i don't respect you as a people.
8 / 10
This album is like being a high school student and entering an underground fighting league because your first love broke your heart. Fuck you Hayley.
iconic. right place, right time.
Been officially one year since my first review/album and this is a good one to celebrate with. The definitive nu metal album that anyone can listen to. While I have never been a big fan of this kind of music and Linkin Park, its still a very solid listen that I enjoyed.
The hits are great, and there are some hidden gems between them, but this is not a no-skip record. Some songs are just meh rap-rock/nu-metal.
Classic record from my childhood. I think this record still holds up. The sounds from this record feel like they're making a resurgence today. Favourite Track(s): Crawling, In The End, One Step Closer Least Favourite Track(s): Cure For The Itch
A good album. Good songs hybrid rap rock that worked really well. Listening it didn’t seem dated. I enjoyed hearing this again.
Youtube tutorial music, and I don't even mean that in a derisive way. This was another album I was fully expecting to hate but I actually really enjoyed this? I can't explain why I had fun with this while All Hope is Gone just annoyed me. Maybe because it's not really trying to be Real Metal, it's very much just its own thing, so I wasn't comparing it to metal albums like I was with AHIG. The music and vocals in general also don't give off this obnoxious tryhard tough guy vibe like AHIG does. The lyrics are very 'you don't understand mom!!!', I would've loved this when I was 14. Even though I never listened to this as a kid it made me kind of nostalgic for that period of my life. Jokes aside I can see why this album spoke to so many teenagers in that era. It also has a genuinely cool mix of hard rock and electronic music. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it meshed together.
01) Papercut - 10,0 02) One Step Closer - 10,0 03) With You - 8,0 04) Points of Authority - 9,0 05) Crawling - 10,0 06) Runaway - 9,0 07) By Myself - 8,0 08) In the End - 10,0 09) A Place for My Head - 8,0 10) Forgotten - 7,5 11) Cure for the Itch - 7,0 12) Pushing Me Away - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,71 (87/100) Current ranking: 120/950
I was probably too old to appreciate the angst in the lyrics when this came out! In The End was on Kerrang! TV a lot and I liked that but never really got paid much attention to anything else by them, although I did recognise a few tracks.
Captures the feeling of teenage angst well. I'm quite surprised to hear that it's a debut album. Definitely worth a listen!
Only knew the hits, but was right at the angst teen age when it was out. I enjoyed it for what it was!
The sound of early 2000’s. I have never listened to the full album before, but I know the singles very well. Favourites: In the End, Crawling, One Step Closer
Really good mix of genres. There’s a few slow songs but overall impressed
Defined a genre and has some absolute bangers
Classic, loved this as a a teenager.
i was sooo happy to have gotten this album. rip chester... i love linkin park, i love hybrid theory, i love how they executed their genre. you can call me a basic btch or a poser all you want but my top 3 are: In the end, crawling and runaway. honorable mention to papercut. the only reason i gave 4/5 is because i can't decide if my favorite album of theirs is hybrid theory, meteora or minutes to midnight.
Honestly still holds up and is entertaining … some excellent singles 4+
I listened to this in bed as it poured outside with my curtains drawn, and honestly I think that’s the only way to listen to this In the End is obviously the standout here, being one of the single most streamed songs ever made; for someone who grew up in the 2000s and heard it god knows how many times it’s still at least a little cool. I think Chester Bennington (rip) has a really unique singing style that sounds good for the most part, and really makes each song feel “Linkin Park” rather than “Nu Metal”. There’s a ton of energy behind each song; it just hits you in waves Biggest complaint I have is the lack of variety, where it really does feel like every song has the exact same structure, tempo, and key at times. The songs I recognized were obviously their own thing but everything else just sounded like they were riffing off them. Also, I just cannot take this stuff seriously; I like Crawling as a song but it really does feel like something a 14 year old would play on his iPod after the girl he asked to homecoming rejected him. I know a lot of these songs are about struggles with mental illness and depression, but that’s all I can think of. I’m honestly kinda surprised this one’s on the list considering the 1001 writers absolutely refuse to put anything that’s actually popular after the year 2000 on the list, but I’m glad it was on here considering how it exposed everyone on earth to a (often despised) genre and produced some of the most recognizable rock songs in the 2000s. I’m trying not to be spiteful since I really did enjoy most of the songs on here, so I think I’ll be nice since it’s at least not another English punk album
This is so BadAss!!! I listened to this and I was transported back in time. It's the 2000's. I'm playing Kingdom Hearts II on the PS2. It's so cool. A lot of the songs have become very meme'd on, but people like to make memes of the shows and music they love; the fact that the songs gained a new meaning in the modern age is proof of their influence. How many 13 year olds expressed themeslves via AMVs? I felt very cool listening to this. I liked the intensity. They invented Nu-Metal and then killed Nu-Metal because there's no way to make a better Nu-Metal album than this.
Cracking. Although slightly prefer the remix version.
Hybrid Theory is one of those albums that instantly takes me back. I was probably 11 or 12 when my older brother brought it home, and while I knew the big singles, I wasn’t exactly a nu-metal kid. I could never get into bands like Limp Bizkit, and at that age I was still too young to really appreciate heavier rock and metal. What I did love was Meteora, and revisiting Hybrid Theory all these years later reminded me why Linkin Park stood above so many of their peers. “Papercut” is an incredible opener. The energy is immediate and the band wastes no time showing what made them special. Mike Shinoda isn’t my favourite rapper, but unlike so many rap-rock frontmen of the era, he actually sounds authentic. He has rhythm, emotion, and knows exactly how to fit into the band’s sound. Chester Bennington, meanwhile, was simply one of a kind. Even on this first track his voice cuts through everything with a rawness and sincerity that nobody else could replicate. Some of the lyrics and hooks feel very 2000s now, but the song still hits. “One Step Closer” was my introduction to Linkin Park and it remains one of the album’s highlights. The guitar riff, the scratches, the bass, Chester screaming “SHUT UP WHEN I’M TALKING TO YOU”—it’s impossible not to get caught up in it. It’s aggressive, memorable, and sounds like it was built for a mosh pit. As the album progresses, what really stands out is how effortlessly the band blends genres. Songs like “With You” and especially “Points of Authority” showcase a group where every member contributes something important without ever feeling forced. The chemistry is remarkable. Everyone gets their moment, yet the focus always remains on the song. Then there’s “Crawling.” This is the track that separated Linkin Park from so many of the rap-rock and nu-metal bands that came after them. Chester’s lyrics are deeply personal, but somehow universal at the same time. Whether you’re struggling with addiction, anxiety, depression, or something entirely different, the song makes you feel understood. It’s haunting, painful, and beautiful. More than twenty years later, it’s still one of the defining songs of the era. The heavier cuts like “Runaway,” “By Myself,” and “A Place for My Head” continue the album’s momentum. There are moments that feel rooted in the clichés of early-2000s nu-metal, but Linkin Park always find a way to make them their own. Mike’s verses remain some of the strongest you’ll find in rock-rap, and Chester consistently elevates everything with his range and intensity. “In the End” was a song I honestly got tired of growing up. It felt like it was everywhere—radio, MuchMusic, school dances, everywhere. But hearing it again after years away from it reminded me why it became such a phenomenon. It’s emotional, catchy, vulnerable, and accessible without feeling manufactured. It wasn’t just a hit; it was a sign that rock music was changing. One of my favourite moments remains “Cure for the Itch.” Back when I was a kid, I could listen to it while skateboarding for hours. Today it works just as well in the background while working, cleaning, or doing pretty much anything. It’s layered, creative, and never gets old. “Pushing Me Away” closes the album perfectly, maintaining the emotional weight while ending on a slightly different energy that makes you want to start the whole thing over again. What surprised me most revisiting Hybrid Theory is how much I enjoyed having it on repeat all day. This isn’t just a nostalgia record. It’s genuinely one of the best nu-metal albums ever made and arguably the best example of rap-rock done right. It’s also the kind of album I’d want to show my daughter someday to explain what I listened to growing up. Linkin Park’s longevity wasn’t an accident. Hybrid Theory and Meteora showed that they had the talent to evolve without losing themselves. Chester Bennington was a once-in-a-generation voice, and his absence is still felt today. If you’ve written this album off as just another nu-metal record from the early 2000s, it’s worth another listen. There’s something special here. More than two decades later, it still stands apart from the crowd. 7.2/10
Great album had fun listening to it. Generally overhated in the music world but i think its an actually enjoyable listen whilst it may not be the most musically advanced im still happy. Loved the mixing on this album aswell
It's hard to knock this album, it's got musicality combined wotha controlled agression that just makes you want to rock out
An album I used to absolutely love. Very much of the time. Still some great songs but I feel my taste has changed/evolved.
Great album, v easy to listen to, great pace. 4/5
Old school rock, genuinely so good, from the first track omg! Energetic but no too heavy in the screams in the guitar, and you're able to hear the lyrics super clearly. Real cool husky voice omg!!! I feel like he's using a different technique when he growls and screams which doesn't overpower and make the song too aggressive. There's also some elements of rap in track 4, which I love, because it adds the rhythmic elements of rap with the fast guitars working together. Some songs are about losing yourself and trying to find yourself again, which was seen before, but with original melodies and techniques its transferred with such uniqueness! Overall this is a really good rock album, a really solid 7/10
good throwback
Not many misses on here. Fast, upbeat tempo throughout this album reminds me a lot of other great 90s/00s rock songs.
Blown away but how much I enjoyed this album. I knew the radio hit but had no idea they were so cool.
290 Absolutely hammered this album back in the day, it’s certainly a bit cheesy in places but still really enjoy it. Highlights Points of Authority In the end Pushing me away
Runs out of steam a bit in the final three songs, but overall an iconic album of this genre.
listened to this about a couple of months ago. i realized then that individually these songs are good but the album listening experience isnt great. i wouldve rated it a 3 then but im feeling generous today so its getting a 4.
Kirjotin äsken pidemmästi mut painoin vahingos kohtaa rate uudestaa enkä jaksa enää kirjottaa. Ois pitäny antaa Princelle ja Holelle yhtä arvosanaa huonommat, koska tää on niitä parempi mut en oo varma onko tää high 4 vai low 5
Heel dope
A good album, quite iconic at least one song for the 2000s rock industry Fav songs- Papercut, In the end 4/5
This is gentleman’s screamo. Apparently that’s a style that works for me pretty well. Lots of energy and this album seems to have all their hits.
Easily one of the best nu metal albums(in a much maligned genre this album is a breath of fresh air), not too long so didn’t overstay its welcome, great riffs and great blending of singing and rapping. Chester has a great voice that really made linkin park what it was.
There is absolutely a time and a place for this album. Four stars
Oh this is linkin park? Interesting. Shoutout Ruby Red Gwen for putting them on my radar. This is interesting. I'm not really sure if this is my vibe but I'm liking it. Interesting noises going on. Very much what I expected from linkin park actually. This fit the bill entirely. God to be a cunt in the 2000s listening to this bullshit with some emo eyeliner and a shitty haircut and a lip piercing. The dream. Oh to be a punk guy. Linkin park just brings it out of me. Mr. Park you're really cooking something up here. This is actually very good and dynamic while remaining true to the genre and its vibe. Mr. Park you've really done something here. What are they doing bro?? I'm a little confused but quite intrigued. Favourite: Paperclip Least Favourite: One Step Closer
Dritkult album.
The best Linkin Park album, a style thats not always something for me, but here its executed amazingly. Love the mix between singing and rap. 1. In the end 2. Forgotten 3. One Step Closer
Head banging and emotional turmoil; loved the anger, pain and sadness this album conveyed, you can feel this one. Think it’s missing a sense of awe that would put it at a 5 but still a solid album and I appreciate that it didn’t overstay its welcome.
What a classic album, so many good tracks. Definitely needs to go into rotation.
Good stuff
Album #91, Linkin Park, Hybrid Theory, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I hated Linkin Park when I was a teenager. I’m not even fully sure why. I think maybe nu metal just didn’t resonate with me at all, and I was probably a bit of a musical snob in my early years as well. I didn’t like how popular they were, so I kind of dismissed them outright. I obviously knew the massive singles because they were completely unavoidable, but outside of that I never really listened to them properly. So fuck me, I feel like I’m about twenty five years late to the party here, because this is a fucking great album. Like, genuinely great. I didn’t expect that early 2000s nu metal sound to sound this brilliant. The production is incredible. Everything sounds huge and clean and sharp. The details throughout are great too. The heaviness of the riffs, the vocal melodies, the turntable scratches, all that stuff still sounds futuristic in a weird way. Not ahead of its time exactly, because it sounds very much of its time, but that whole style still feels like a futuristic take on rock music. I didn’t connect with this when I was younger, even though I probably would have related to a lot of the themes at the time. But listening to it now from more of a distance, I can appreciate it a lot more. The best thing about the album is their ear for choruses. Every single track sounds like it could have been a single because the choruses are so banging. Every song has a huge hook that feels earned through the verses and the build-up. The songwriting is just ridiculously catchy throughout. I also really liked the interplay between the rapping and Chester Bennington’s vocals. Before listening, I honestly thought that would be the thing I’d hate most and that it would sound really cringey. And while some of the sensitivity is definitely a bit overwrought at times, that kind of comes with the territory. For the most part, it actually works really, really well. If I had any criticism, it’s that the album is very formulaic and pretty one note. But to be fair, it’s a fucking great note. The style works because the songs are just so well written and catchy. Every track is an earworm. One funny thing I noticed is that the final song, “Pushing Me Away”, sounds almost exactly like “Numb” from the next album. The vocal melodies, the structure, loads of it feels really similar. I looked it up afterwards and saw that their second album got criticised for sounding too much like this one, and I can totally understand that criticism. It’s probably one of the reasons I don’t know if I’ll dive much deeper into their discography. Still though, this is apparently one of the best selling albums of all time, and I guess all those people weren’t wrong. Turns out I was the one who was wrong. A really great surprise.
Fed entire generation's depression. Great debut.
Really enjoyed this, I kind of wrote off this scene at the time, but this has stood the test of time well.
Listened to this in middle school a lot.
Good
given that i grew up with this album, there is a nostalgia aspect that almost made me give it a 5, but unbiased: i appreciate the raw emotion throughout. so many great songs on this album <3
This is the first time I e listened to this album in full since high school. Still holds up. Banger
Pourquoi j’ai pas entendu ça quand gt jeune???
great disc for the youth
aggressive entêtant catharsis punching in your face apocalyptic
I loved it back then, and enjoyed it again now. Points for impact: after this I went to the 2025 Sleep Token album and yep, wouldn’t have that without this.
Dumb rock in a similar manner to Limp Bizkit, but with much more edge and less fun. Still fun to listen to, can't say these songs aren't memorable and make for a perfect soundtrack to a drunk driving binge. It's just stupid fun to scream these choruses at the top of your lungs.
Rap metal, who knew it could work?
Linkin Park lean heavily into the psychological domain, trauma, and despair. Well executed and heavy. Chester Bennington (?) is an excellent singer, died tragically young. Great band. In the End is a classic, great hook, thoughtful and emotionally expressive. Well executed angry youth anthems.
I didn’t expect something about 70’s but it surprised me. It was really good
This Album starts with a bang, sounds the same after few songs but a place for my head was, is and will always be such a massiv banger!
Okay, heavily biased here. This album showed 11year old me the way towards music that was heavier and more aggressive than my parents' classic rock and pop stuff. (I remember them being shocked by Chester Benningham shouting from my room SHUT UP WHEM I'M TALKING TO YOU!!!) There's much to like here, and the parts fit together nicely: Downtuned metal riffs, sweet DJ effects, Mike Shinoda's rapping, Chester's powerful clean and non-clean singing. The songs are short and effectively constructed. Only the middle stretch of "Crawling" and "Runaway" insn't that strong. I know mu metal is often frowned upon (by me also), but here, it really comes together and forms a sweet listen. As I said, I'm biased ;) 4/5
classic
Not listened to much by them before, though impossible to completely miss I just never had a nu metal phase really. Though I wasn't hugely into it now it's an impressive album that feels like it'd go insanely hard if it hit you at the right time and place.
It’s album like this on this list that help me recognize and hopefully tear down some of my pretensions about certain types of music. I rolled my eyes a little when I got this album for the day, even if I knew I loved songs like One Step Closer and In The End when they were all over pop and rock radio stations and MTV when this came out. I’m not sure if I’d ever listened to the full album even if it was rather dominate after its release my last year of middle school. I’ve heard the hits a million times of course, and I probably associated the band with the weird and disturbed kids at my school unfairly, since I was probably weird and disturbed myself. As a boring grownup I found this to be a surprisingly even and well made album from start to finish, and the angsty energy in this record make it a great companion at the gym.
4 stars!!
The teenage angst is strong with this one
It's great, what can I say? Later Nu Metal bands could be annoying, but that doesn't mean it's bad.
I would say that Nu Metal is among my least favourite music genres, but I didn't really mind this one. It's like a heavy rock album with some cool industrial and electronic elements (e.g. "Points of Authority.") Lots of the songs on the album fluctuate between subdued rap sections by Mike Shinoda and the explosive choruses which has angst-driven vocals by Chester Bennington. I can see why this album was a big deal and people reference it a lot, and they talk about how much it means to them. Soo, I wouldn't say I'm a complete fan of the album, but it was a lot better than what I was expecting. Only song on here was aware of before the album was the amazing song of "In the End" and may have heard "Crawling" (though not fully confident I have; it just sounds familiar.) A new found song that I really like is "Papercut" which is a song that is simply an amazing opener to the album and probably of all time. I wouldn't mind listening to this album again, because it has some really cool sounds. And another reason is because it isn't 70 minutes with 15 minutes of it being a silence hidden track, like some other famous nu metal bands around that time period. Highlight Song/s: "Papercut" and "In the End"
8/10 Enjoyed the vibe cause of the state I'm in, but the constant yelling in almost every song is just not for all the time scenarios. Really liked it, but would only listen to it in several occasions
Very nice Seems like it inspired all these hero alternative rock bands Not as a repetitive as I would have thought
Beast of a debut. The sound is so polished, the vocals are so unique... This is so influential to where music would go. Industrial, pop punk, nu metal, it's all blended into something that really hit the mark. I was never too much of a Linkin Park fan but some of these tracks were unavoidable.
Despite being the album for angsty teenagers right around the time I stopped being an angsty teenager I really enjoy this album. It's got some absolute bangers on it, the DJ/Producer is actually additive to the band unlike a lot of the other bands of the era featuring one, Chester Bennington unfortunately comes through as being very sincere and it hits hard. It's aggressive in a way that isn't completely inaccessible. My only complaint is that the drumming is extremely formulaic; every song has an 8th note high hat hit throughout; it's like he doesn't know another beat. It's fine for the music but I couldn't help but notice it as I listened all the way through. I can forgive whatever era of cringe this album associates with. I'm too old to care.
A réécouter svt, inclassable dans mes playlist
Mucha energía. Potente. Fusiones interesantes. Voz ideal y letras sólidas. Las mejores, para mí, In the end y One Step Closer. Buen album.
First album I ever bought. So ive got a soft spot for it. Some tunes on here. Prime Nu Metal, mosher era Enough time has gone by that i can appreciate it again
Well, I can certainly see how this appealed to a ton of people. It's less bro-y than Limp Bizkit, it's better-written, and the "you" that the band sings about is amorphous enough to be a partner/friend/parent/teacher. That being said, I wasn't into this when it came out and I'm still not into it, despite the talent involved.
This album is such a 3.5 star album to me. A solid 7 out of 10, no higher, no lower. Makes it difficult to rate because of the no half stars thing on this app. Papercut, Runaway, In The End (obvz) were personal song highlights and I like the poppiness of the song structures. Compared to my other 4 star albums Im gonna say it's closer to them than it is to my 3s, but it's not a true 4 in my heart
Listening to Linkin Park is so bittersweet… so many resonated with Chester and he helped people feel seen but he’s not here anymore to see how much impact his words had. He was so clear he was suffering
It's still good, but not as good as I found it 20+ years ago. The angst is a bit much now. The best tracks are like In The End - letting the emotion of Bennington's vocals come though without a lot of the cheesiness. Some rap rock is ok. Even a little of the screaming works. There's too much of both on about half the tracks. Still, I enjoyed most of it.
👍🏻
Rage Against the Machine t ex. En klar fyra
Interesting, very influential
OMG this is so A.J. Soprano coded, "Cure for the Itch" for me was the hype of the album.
Pretty solid
