Reviews (page 5 of 13)
The nu metal vocals are going to be polarizing, but I think it works for the style. The riffs are crunchy and undeniably good. I like the keyboards and DJ scratches. It's dated but that's what I want with this. Papercut is a strong start with a great chorus, and One Step Closer is just pure angst with a classic breakdown. With You alternates very heavy parts with calmer sections, and Points of Authority has yet another good riff. Crawling features Chester at maybe his whiniest, but I like the quieter brooding moments in between the heavy choruses. Good keyboards again on Runaway, a deeper cut that's just as catchy as some of the singles. By Myself is a bit of a filler, but In the End is maybe their biggest song (toss up with Numb?) and it deserves its flowers, from the piano to the power chords and the emo lyrics... I don't know, man. It just works. After that there's a lull, but I appreciate Cure for the Itch, a bit darker and more cinematic. Pushing Me Away is more in line with the rest and it gets the job done. This wasn't my scene back in the day, but I dig it now for some reason.
Super solid nu-metal album. Some classics on this one. I was very happy to receive an album I’ve heard before and enjoy.
Such a cool album when I was in high school. I remember being in awe of this sound. Really took hard rock and nu metal up a notch.
Great album
Songs in the last sounds better 4/5
This was out when I was 15 and was right at the time when nu metal was at its peak. I liked Maiden and Metallica and had known the Beatles since I could remember which made me think I was better than the people that listened to Linkin Park having only recently found 'their' music while I secretly thought it was great. The life of a teenage musical snob! Now I'm 40 I know that's an absolute nonsense and not just because this is a great album. Chester was a fantastic singer and there is loads on here to enjoy. Glad to have heard this again. While I'm here apologies to all those who hung around outside John Menzies in Kilmarnock for the sneering as I walked past!
So iconic. So many super memorable lines, dramatic hooks that just pop instantly and this self-destructive energy. It's definitely a sad album, but at the same times has so many bangers. Very easy to see why it's so popular.
p good could see the rap (?) influences and could also see where 21 pilots took inspiration.
love
Better than expected
Also not my jam, but the album is short and catchy and fine to listen to. Several of the songs sound like a teenage boy temper tantrum "YOU TRY TO GET THE BEST OF ME, GO AWAY", for example, but I think there's a strong argument to be made that this album performed an important service in modelling healthy masculinity for teen boys--songs talk about being scared, feeling alone, etc, and it'd be better if boys today were listening to Linkin Park and forming bad knock off bands than listening to podcasts. I'm giving it a 4, even though Jon's right that the rapping is bad.
Really surprised myself by liking this. I think it caught me on the right day bc if I listened to it today, I’d probably hate it
Yes it’s kinda cringe but I think the hype outweighs it. It’s pretty nostalgic at this point for me
This album is beyond amazing.I'm saying this as someone who hardly listens to rock or metal but I swear now I feel like a rebellious teen now.
I might be to old to deal with the intensity of this album but this transports me to my younger self. That together with Chester's voice, it just works.
Love this
Never was into these guys back in the day but it's a great listen.
There’s levels to this nu metal shit.
This was the HOTTEST shit when I was in middle school and therefore I feel it is cool to like this
I think the people that hate this album think this is the heaviest shit in the world. Yeah there is screaming. Have you ever listened to grindcore? There's way noisier and more incoherent stuff out there than this. I'm not going to sit here and insult those people. Music taste is subjective. You don't have to like it, though that idea could be conveyed in a nicer way. I usually try to find good stuff to say about each album on here. Sometimes that's pretty impossible, but I'm still trying nonetheless. With all of this being said, not liking this album is one thing, but saying it doesn't deserve to BE on this list is honestly insulting. There are a lot of albums on here that I don't enjoy, BUT I can still understand their impact and acknowledge their worth. This album definitely contributed to the genre and shaped a group of people. FOR FUCK'S SAKE IT WENT 12 TIMES PLATINUM. Don't like it for all I care, but don't say it's not worthy of its place on a list like this. To end all of this *insert white monster edit with crawling as the background song here*
So many bangers
genuinely a great album, production is spot-on. don't let the internet irony police stop you from appreciating this for what it is
so many memories of sleepovers on the trampoline with Pal!
I wasn't there for this, or any nu metal at the time, but I've come to embrace the genre much later. It's maybe a bit too polished and predictable in places, but this record brought many kids into the metal scene (I was already there, and not a kid), so that makes this genre defining and influential. It's on my shelves Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★★☆ (7/10) Total reviewed : 258 Already owned : 60 Purchased : 15 To buy list : 1 Nope : 182
I don't want to own this album, but I appreciate what they were and the story behind the lyrics is devastating.
Very strong album with some great songs on here. Something I never really listened to on release outside of the singles.
A lot of bangers. Chesters voice is just so fitting to this. I was more annoyed than amazed at that DJ track in the middle of the album.
What a time capsule for me.. it’s good to know that it stands the test of time
This album has stood the test of time. It has defined a generation and help blend nu-metal into the populus. Overall, the album is great and I enjoy most of the songs. There are 1 or 2 I am no the biggest fan of, but it is overall a fantastic album.
The music nerd in me cannot pretend to not like this album. Yes, is a nu-metal cliche and the rapping makes me cringe sometimes, but I hear Chester’s voice and it’s like I’m 14 again lying in my bedroom’s bed listening to the full album and enjoying it so so much. RIP Chester.
Most of it still holds up. A bit samey in some parts.
Dope
Don’t think I’d ever actually listened to this one front to back. One of the most distinctive/memorable album covers of all time just quietly. 3.5/5
This (and their 2nd album even more so) was a big album as a teenager of the aughts. Still goes hard.
Dobar album, volin njihov zvuk i kombinaciju distrotiranog rep vokala i pivanja/deranja od Chestera, samo na momente neke pisme postanu repetativne al ima i par bangera. 7/10 Najbolja pisma: In the end
I’m genuinely shocked to see this album on this list. I love this album, I just didn’t think I’d see it here. I hope Meteora is on here too. Honestly, I can understand if people don’t like it if they didn’t grow up with it. There’s still some really good stuff in here though and In The End is an absolute classic. I love this album, I’ve been a big fan of Linkin Park my whole life so maybe it’s a bit biased. But hey, that’s kinda the point of these ratings, right?
I have a feeling reviews of this album strongly correlate with if this came out in your adolescence and if you connected then. IMO - one of the great angst/depressed millennial youth records. It held up surprisingly decently, but it helps that I remember the words to half of the songs despite not listening to them in a long time.
This is nu-metal at its finest. It’s heavy, aggressive and powerful, while still being pretty accessible. Linkin Park has this extremely cool vibe that just sits in every song—sure it’s a product of its time, but there are many incredible aspects of this album. The guitar tones are sick, and the playing is super tight. Chester’s screams are bloodcurdling and breathtaking. The rapping is also pretty tight and very catchy at times. Overall, this is a great album and I appreciate it a lot.
This was cool. It must have been fun to be an angsty teen in the early 2000s
I’ve known about this band forever and the album still holds up. I don’t have much else to say other than what the Apple Music reviewer wrote: Linkin Park calls back to what the. Use and Depeche Mode were conveying with their music, just sensitive young men looking for a break from the pain.
Forefront of their genre with some iconic tunes here. Not really in my wheelhouse, but they put together a solid groove and you acn find yourself easily getting into it.
this album is not made for me. it is inaccessible to a beautiful, fun loving, gorgeous, free woman. I’m glad chester and LP could make young men feel less alone tho.
1. Papercut- 7.5/10 I’ve already listened to this song so I already knew I liked it. I like the nu metal aspect of the song and it has good instrumentals. It’s also catchy in my opinion. 2. One step closer- 7/10 Again I’ve already heard this song before I knew I liked it. I don’t like it as much as papercut but it’s still good. Honestly it’s not the most amazing song ever but it’s not bad, catchy, it reminds me of making old tic toks. 3. With You - 8/10 I haven’t heard this before but immediately I like the instrumentals, especially at the beginning it’s very unique. I’m not really into nu metal right now but I could totally see me loving this when I am in that mood 4. Points of authority- 8.5/10 Never heard this song, I like the first couple lyrics. This song is a bit more singing less yelling which I like. This is prob my fav song on the album so far at least. I also like the lyrics 5. Crawling-7.5/10 I feel like every that listens to rock knows this song. It’s not bad it’s just not my favorite off the album. I do like it, i especially like the chorus but this song is a bit overplayed. I do like the lyrics again 6. Runaway- 8.7/10 Sounds like bubbles popping. This is definitely different than the other songs on this album I do like it. The chorus is really catching I like this one. I like that there’s singing and then a verse is more screaming focused, I also think that makes the lyrics have more meaning. This is my fav song far. 7. By myself- 8/10 All these songs are about being stuck in our heads it feels like. This one is good though, I wonder what prompted them to write an album like this. Again I really like the chorus specifically the beginning it sounds so satisfying. 8. In the end -7.7 This is another popular song, not bad though. In this song I’d say the verses are carrying rather the choruses. This song definitely focuses heavily on the lyrics but I like it. This is their most popular song, which is understandable since it’s a breakup song but a good one at that. I also think people can relate to it in different aspects than just a breakup which is good. 9. A place for my head- 7/10 This song also sounds very unique and different than the other songs on this album with the guitar. I do like the instrumentals but I’m not a big fan of the lyrics or vocals on this one. Actually vocals are alright but I don’t love the lyrics something’s just off about them to me. I do like this though. 10. Forgotten - 7.5/10 A place in my head went perfectly into this song I didn’t even realize a new song started, I find that very cool. I do like this song too I don’t have much to say about it. 11. Cure for the itch -7.5/10 All these songs are similar but very unique to each other at the same time. I feel like this song has more hip hop influences. It’s basically just an instrumental track which will never be my favs unless it’s jazz, but this one is good. I think if there was a song with a similar vibe to this but with lyrics it would eat. 12. Pushing me away-5.5/10 Nothing really stands out to me on this song. Of course instruments are good and everything but it’s just not anything special really. I kinda feel like since this is the last song on the album it wasn’t super needed. Overall average:7.5/10 The songs seem to be short around 3 minutes each but there’s a lot more songs. I think the fact these songs were shorter worked well, I don’t think long songs are bad but short works better for this.
okay how did i never know genres that blended rock/metal and rap/hip hop even existed?? this album is a dope blend of several genres and sounds i love, so pleasantly surprised wow, instantly started it over again when it finished. even though theres some screamy lyrics, it's not too much to bother me. sick album!
I listen to this album from start to finish regularly so I think I could give it four stars for that reason.
Favorite Track: In The End
Album- Hybrid Theory(2000) Favorite song from album- Papercut and Points of Authority Album Rating- 8/10 Already listened to this album beforehand
My younger brother listened to this when we were teens. Didn't like it much then but nostalgic now.
Look, teen angst is eternal and this one still hits for me. I will not be taking questions at this time.
I understand all the hype around Linkin Park now. This goes so hard
Liked this when my son was listening it.
I’m so glad Meteora made this list! I’m surprised at the number of hits it has. Somewhere I Belong, Faint, Breaking the Habit, and of course Numb. They basically took their debut album and turned it up a notch. Wait… this isn’t Meteora? It’s not even on the list?! Oh well. In the end, it doesn’t really matter.
Obviously a landmark album, not not really my cup of tea. While Bennington is obviously beloved and extremely talented, I've always been bothered by the frequent switching between his normal beautiful melodic voice and his screaming scratchy and distorted metal voice. I find it very distracting and annoying, almost like he's trying too hard. Many of the tracks sound too similar for me, at least at first few listens. In the End stands out for sure but many of the other tracks are hard and raw and passionate too. Interestingly some of the most listenable tracks now are the slower songs towards the end.
Never really listened to linkin park except for the super popular ones
Amazing first half, followed by a mediocre second half. I'd only ever listened to the hits with one and never the full album. Would probably be a 3.5 if I could get half stars but it doesn't feel right giving it just 3.
Relisten Kinda hard to not separate my opinions on this album now from the fact that it was basically constantly playing for most of my childhood. I think it occasionally is a little goofy and melodramatic and Mike Shinoda's rapping isn't the best. But then Chester screams his fuckin lungs out over some of the best nu-metal melodies out there and suddenly the flaws don't matter as much. There's an earnestness to even the corniest lines, it's hard not to feel a little bit of something, especially considering Chester's passing. Fav track: Crawling, Points of Authority Least fav: By Myself
Linkin Park’s debut is kind of like the better parts of RHCP’s catelogue and the worse parts of Cage’s catelogue if you smashed them together. Songs like In The End, Points of Authority, Papercut, et cetera are all great examples of this album’s greatness, and its high points. Additionally, the very apparent Eminem influence (at least it sounds like Em’s brand of rapping, I’d have to check whether he was a direct influence though) combine with the very consistent production provides this album’s greatest strength: its consistency. The entire experience feels very cohesive, and even when it’s not great it still feels like it adds to the larger album experience. I really did not expect to like this very much but I honestly really quite like it!!! I will definitely return to this. 8.2/10.
1. paper - 2.5 2. clozer - 4 3. you - 2 4. authority- 2.5 5. crauuling - 5 6. run - 2 7. Myself - 1.5 8. End -5 9. Head- 2 10. Forgotten - 2 11. Cure - 1.5 12. Away - 2
Not really familiar with Linkin Park music but know of the group. I'll check out more of their stuff.
Excellent!
The nostalgia is strong with this one. It still hits. It’s a little more static in it’s sound then later albums. 4.5/5
Haven't listened to a full Linkin Park album in years. I wish I could pretend that I'm above this kind of music but LP still slaps. Feel free to disregard all my opinions following this review. Favorite track: Crawling 3.5/5
This album set off the nu-metal craze of the early 2000s. It has some absolute bangers that are probably clouded with nostalgia, but I really enjoyed listening to Hybrid Theory. There are so many iconic songs on this one album. While I don't think it's perfect, it's still pretty great. Best Songs: Papercut, One Step Closer, Crawling, In the End Worst Songs: With You
Uhhhh I thought I was a Linkin Park hater, but I guess I was just a boring teenager; this rules.
Nostalgic Familiar
I loved this album as a kid so it's probably higher than it should be on nostalgia alone.
I know the nu-metal style of music became somewhat of a joke as time went on, but c'mon this is great.
One of the best rock albums imo. Chester forever
Really enjoyed this, so angsty haha. Vocals are a little hard to take seriously at times.
I had listened to most of this album as a kid, it was just as I remember. Linkin Park at its peak, this album is banger after banger! Some of Linkin Park’s most famous songs and one of their best albums!
Not sure what was wrong with me, but I remember actively rejecting LP when I was a kid. Not that I didn't like their music -- I enjoyed the hits -- but for some reason I refused to fall into fandom and actually buy their CDs. IDK I guess its part of being an adolescent. In any case, I remember this album being ubiquitous at that time following the mega-success of One Step Closer, In the End, Crawling, Runaway, and to a lesser extent Papercut. Gotta say Papercut is a solid opener that perfectly captures what LP does well. Their songs aren't exactly complex, and quite often they play to the same template, but I'll be damned if they aren't catchy and well done. Write a catchy chorus, deliver it over a basic riff and drop into a hip-hop adjacent drive with some electro-bullshit and mixed record sounds swirling about; whisper a little bit and then scream or deliver some drawn out vocals. Hard to deny that One Step Closer is a fun song. Saw them live last year and it was pretty incredible the amount of energy this song conjured. Points of Authority is a fine song in its own right, but it makes me want for Collision Course. Kind of forgot about Runaway -- such a solid and goddamned catchy song. A Place for My Head > Forgotten feels very Nu-Metal (a la Limp Bizkit). Maybe not a high water mark for music as art, but hard to deny that it is fun. Pushing Me Away is a pretty forgettable closer. By and by this is a great debut album. LP distinguished themselves clearly within a crowded field by developing a useful template, and making some damned catchy songs with better than average vocals for the genre. And as far as templated acts go, theirs provided enough room for modulation to not get labeled as "recyclers" in the same vein as Nickelback. Very very solid 4.
Great album. In the end is just a classic song. Outside of that particular song, my favorites would be crawling, one step closer, and runaway.
Top 3: A Place For My Head, Crawling, & Points of Authority
This was a lotta fun. The vocal style is really cool and this is just heavy enough where it all sounds cohesive. "In the End" is obviously iconic as well. Liked Songs: "Papercut" , "One Step Closer" , "Points of Authority" , "Crawling" , "Runaway" , "By Myself" , "In the End" , "A Piece for My Head" , "Forgotten" , "Pushing Me Away" , "High Voltage"
It might sound silly, but this is a sort of sacred music to me, even though I never owned the album or anything by them. When I was 17, this was my girlfriend’s music. I pretended to like metal and she pretended to like Bob Dylan. Now we are married; I actually came to like metal and she DEFINITELY doesn’t like Dylan. I didn’t know it when this was in the air in 2000, but I was in the process of becoming part of her family as my own family fell apart… before too long, both my parents would divorce another set of stepparents, with more relationships abandoned and shattered. They both died alone. Meanwhile I became more and more like an adopted kid at girlfriend’s house, forming my own relationships with her mom and dad and all her siblings. I remember all of us sitting together and crying after 9/11. She was a middle child and by the time we were together her tastes were being shaped from the older and the younger siblings. Her older brother brought the Metallica and Zeppelin… her younger brother brought Linkin Park and Fall Out Boy. That wonderful kid died unexpectedly of a chronic condition when he was 21. So for us his music especially is a sort of portal not just to when we were all together, but also to the pre-9/11 time when the world order didn’t not seem quite so savage. Yes, it’s all pretty angsty depressing music but it also came from a world where teenagers could get depressed about relatively normal things as opposed to society falling apart at the seams. No, it’s not a 5 album to me and I don’t listen to it that often. I get the various ways in which it is overproduced and corny. However, I think folks also sell it short by judging it against youmuch more accomplished metal. I think it makes more sense to view Linkin Park as an emo band incorporating metal, hip hop, pop, and electronica as it suited them. That’s the side of them that still appeals to me, anyway, when I go back and listen to them. It’s all a little overwrought, a little over dramatic, and for some moments it’s exactly right.
Pretty good album, was good to listen to it after knowing only a couple song from it. Listened to it on the tram. There were a few songs that stood out to me but I don’t remember which ones from the top of my head. I like.
A pivotal album that entirely re-wrote the rules on what rock could sound like, which helped usher in the "nu metal" tidal wave that would envelop the 2000s-2010s (for better or worse). Linkin Park was absolutely MASSIVE when I was in high school in the late 2000s-early 2010s, largely as a result of the impact this release (and the rise of nu metal as a genre) had on the cultural zeitgeist. While this specific record came out in 2000, I'd argue that Linkin Park's music most connected with the young millennial generation who, despite the feelings of hope and optimism present throughout the Obama years, still found themselves coming of age in a post-9/11, post-Great Recession world. Through this album and their subsequent releases, Linkin Park helped normalize the ability to discuss mental health problems through music, and gave millennials an outlet to channel their frustration with the world at large. I say all this as someone who wasn't even that big of a fan at the time of their height. Whatever Linkin Park has morphed into since their reunion (RIP Chester) this album will always encapsulate their true sound.
Good: All killer, no filler Bad: Lyrics are terrible Regardless of the lyrical quality, Linkin Park are on the Mount Rushmore of nu metal and this record was a smash hit that helped define alternative heavy music in the 00s
I’d never heard a Linkin Park song that wasn’t a radio hit before, and honestly I was surprised by it. When I was a kid with plenty of nu-metal sympathies, there were always a few bands that just seemed too vapid for me to bother with…Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Kid Rock…and somehow Linkin Park got grouped in with them (even though a couple of those aforementioned radio hits were guilty pleasure songs), but I see now that was a mistake. These guys owe a lot of their sound to Korn but their vibe offers essentially the opposite emotional message: not “if you are tortured it’s because the world hates you and you should hate it, too,” but “if you are tortured, it’s okay, you’re not alone, let’s work through it together.” YES, it’s rap metal and yes, I wish I were somehow above thinking it’s great, but I’m not. To 41-year-old me, this album fucking rules. 16-year-old me didn’t know what he was missing, the snob. If I force myself to get past how the genre is a little goofy and dated, there’s a lot of beauty in some of these songs. “In the End” (a song I’d never really given a serious listen and therefore have always thought was a little shallow) is a huge and moving anthem to the idea that emotional pain is inevitable. How nice that it became a mainstream message for everyone who needed to hear it, every adolescent male who was sold the idea that their only emotional options were stoicism and violent anger. Linkin Park, surrounded on all sides by a genre full of macho idiots capitalizing on their teenage fans’ testosterone, just seem like good dudes with a lot of feelings to burn through.
Emo kid central! A classic I must say. It was quite a depressing listen when I took in Chester and Mike’s lyrics as the somber tone of the album came to light. After years of ironically listening to Linken Park because of anime and Sonic AMVs in the late 2000s, this serious listen made me appreciate their work more. The tracks I leaned into aside from ‘In the End’ where ‘With You’, ‘Crawling’ and ‘A place for my Head’. However I really enjoyed the more nu-metal tinged tracks like with you and runaway. The screams in this album are really good too, they fully immerse you into the grungy, lime tinged/ industrial atmosphere this album brings out. An easy 4/5-GEM. (20/01/2026)
Nu metal, rap metal, rap rock.
Great reminiscing and instrument playing was top
pretty cool 😋
second time listening to it again and i liked it alot more this time top 3 was paper cut crawlign and in the end basic but idc
Overall good album. The middle does drag a bit with songs constructed very similarly. But a good and fast listen.
Fire
I know their popular songs but never listened to an album. So far, so good. I like it a lot
Lite hårt för mig men asbra album, iconic och nice att lyssna på. Inte för mycket huvudvärk.
3.5
IN THE END! JAG GER DENNA EN FYRA!
Absolute classic! Love this one
Great debut album, not one track that doesn't work for me. I don't understand why this album was removed from the current book listing.
Joar is halt linkin park ne
Not my type of music, но хз, это хотя веселее слушать чем кьюров тех. Поставила бы 3.5
Entiendo por qué forjó a tantos de mis amigos en el 2000 pero 26 años después no conecto mucho. Igual tiene sus grandes tracks.
Giving it 4/5 for the nostalgia factor and the singles. Favourite tracks are "One Step Closer" and "A Place for My Head". My best friend, Filip, loved this band growing up. We had tickets to see Linkin Park on the Hunting Party Tour in ~2014/2015 (with Of Mice & Men AND Rise Against opening!) but the show was cancelled when Chester injured his leg. It is a show we still wish we had the opportunity to see.
my jam
B+
What a great accessible album now only because it's easily digestible but because it's excellent produced. The only low point I can tell as a guitarist is that the guitarist was extremely forced to not move from a certain box, yet however they delivered as they really worked for the songs.
So good
Undeniably dated and cheesy and teenage angst etc, but this does have unreal bangers.
I actually liked it! I haven’t really listened to rock before, but this is a great album!
So good to revisit. This album came out while I was in elementary school, how was I relating so much to so much anger? I felt this album in my bones.
it just hits
- Representa melhor do que ninguém a época do começo da internet, definido pela piração e intensidade do Prodigy com a agressividade e irreverência do cali punk. A letra é bem existencialista e pessimista. - É o tipo de nu metal que eu gosto, com ideias autênticas, várias texturas, misturando hip-hop, techno e indutrial com thrash e hardcore. Apesar de ser bem pop.
a classic from my youth. not a go-to for me but i can appreciate the lyrics and this albums impact. i enjoyed re-listening more than i thought i would.
un clásico pero no es meteora
Felt like I was in my own dbz amv video 🔥🤘🏽🤘🏽
I was meh on Linkin Park 25 years ago, but decided to give this a listen with fresh ears and was pleasantly surprised. Chester Bennington is an impressive vocalist, something I didn't really appreciate as a teen. Solid album.
guitar hero core
“Everything you say to me Takes me one step closer to the edge And I’m about to break” Linkin Park’s debut is for me the definitive Nu Metal album. No alpha posturing or toxic masculine lyrics just pure teen angst mixed with genuine anxieties and struggles conveyed through angry instrumentals and simple but effective raps. Linkin Park would never quite hit the highs of this album with a full length project again but that would admittedly seriously be going some. Songs like “One Step Closer”, “Crawling”, and “In The End” would go on to soundtrack the pain and strife of the noughties emo generation. The lyrics to the singles from “Hybrid Theory” have been memed to death and define the stereotype of the teenage emo. The second I pressed play on “Papercut” I felt 15 again. I can still feel the catharsis of allowing this album to wash over you all these years later. The ability for music to do that is a big part of why I listen and it is invaluable.
better than i expected
Big hits, I get it, I know it has many fans around the world. But I found all songs are pretty similar, so listening to one is kind of enough. I'll give it 4 stars because I get it, but I didn't love it.
8/10 - частично слушал
One does not simply listen to Linkin Park objectively. I can’t listen to Hybrid Theory without remembering being 8 years old listening to Josh’s pirated music on Windows Media Player and hearing “Crawling” for the first time. “Papercut” was a corrupted file that cut off at the bridge and I didn’t know there was more until streaming became popular. I played “One Step Closer” in my head to keep a consistent freestyle pace on the high school swim team (“I need a little room to breath” while counting my breaths? 🤘). I could go on, but I’ll stop there. Great album. RIP Chester.
A childhood classic for me. I thankfully never had the kind of life to be able to relate to the lyrics, but it always felt like I could. Legendary for a reason.
Eine Bruchlinie in meiner musikalischen Sozialisierung. Aber der Weg ging schnell weiter.
Not the biggest fan of the lyrical stylings, but the riffs and the tone hit my sweet spot. "Forgotten" the highlight.
not a bad song on that album
Very good!
I was very excited about this one. It's no Meteora, but it's close. One Step Closer will always make me think of my brother's friend who always sang it when we played Rock Band. In the End is just so good. I still love this album and old Linkin Park, but honestly if I think about the lyrics too much, I get really sad about Chester. favorite songs - one step closer - crawling - myself - in the end fun wiki facts: - They initially wanted to use the name "Lincoln Park"; however, they changed it to "Linkin" to acquire the internet domain "linkinpark.com" - Meteora is named after the rocky region of Meteora in Greece, where numerous monasteries have been built on top of the rocks - the band released an app for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, a game called 8-Bit Rebellion!
I kept expecting Bring Me to Life to play next even though that's a song on a different album by a different artist
High school me rocked the hell out of this cd
It’s my first time listening their music. I only know they were very famous before. Their songs hybrid with rock and hiphop styles together. I love the beats and their altitudes.
Best Song: One Step Closer When I was a high schooler in the early 90's, our teen angst albums were basically Metallica, Guns N Roses, and Megadeth. I will defend these albums to this day even though, objectively, all three bands had better albums than those that came out at that time (GNR - Use Your Illusions 1 & 2, Metallica - Metallica, Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction) but that didn't matter - those albums were my teenage mind vs. the world. If you were to fast forward 5-7 years, this album would be those high schoolers, "fight the power" albums that go against social norms, even though pretty much every other high schooler would be listening to the same thing. Not to be a hater here with my, "old man yells at cloud" moment. I enjoyed this album and liked Chester (RIP). But, it is obviously a timely album that described a period of angst in the post-Columbine, pre-9/11 US. I'm not really sure how this album is a conversation of the Godfather of nu metal as I had seen in some discussions about it when both Korn and Limp Bizket had come out with their albums prior to this. Overall, it is a good album with some songs that could have been scrapped for sounding a bit 311-ish to me. Sadly, I will say that the best songs on this album are the ones that were released and you probably heard on the radio. If you liked those songs, you will like the whole album. If you don't like those, there will be no diamonds hidden away for you. 4/5.
Genre Ground breaking rock rap master piece - Chester sadly missed
In the end such a banger. Enjoyable throughout. Bit heavy in parts but snuck a 4
Happy Friday - A nice noisy treat for the end of the week! In the End is of course the highlight of the collection, but the other songs are surprisingly strong Very glad to have finally heard the whole album
Big fan of linkin park but my favorite is a thousand Suns with its flow rather than this album. In the end is great.
This one is a little challenging to rate because a lot of my positive feelings about the album are from nostalgia. But it has held up over the years and I would gladly listen again so I think I can safely give it a 4.
this bring me back to high school! Some absolutely classic songs on here. I thought In the End was my fave song from this album but on this listen I liked Crawling more
Wird langsam zu meinem favourite LP album 4.5
Taking me back to high school Love it.
Consummate
High octane from start to finish - really good.
Dr Kleiner and Eli Vance kind of cooked with this one
So much fun! Combines my metal and emo past with current interest in rap. My mom’s fave too. Love the complete lack of irony. I’ve felt this way before…SO INSECURRRRREE
I was completely ready to hate this. I never liked it when it came out, but now that I'm older and wiser I figured it was worth an honest listen. Turns out I didnt hate it. It's short, it knows what it wants and it sounds good. I can't help it.
Not Metal, barely even Nu-Metal, what it actually is is every genre that had a brief moment in the spotlight in the 90s all mashed up into some of the most ruthlessly crafted Pop of the decade. Weirdly enough I think the singles are the weakest stuff on here(Papercut exempt, such a fantastic opener) but songs like With You, Points of Authority, Forgotten, By Myself, and A Place For My Head crush. It does start to grate a bit after hearing so many songs with identical structures all clocking in within a minute of the same length(even including the slight variation of Mr. Hahn’s DJ Shadow worship on Cure For The Itch) but Pushing Me Away is the best song on the album so that feeling never stays with me.
This went hard in high school. After a while the music gets repetitive and the rapping is kinda cringe to be honest
jams favorite song: In the End
This album ruled my childhood, and it STILL slaps. Good on you 12 year-old me.
#FORFEITTHEGAMEBEFORESOMEBODYTAKESYOUOUTTATHEFRAMEPUTYANAMETASHAMECOVERUPYAFACEYOUCANTRUNARACETHEPACEISTOOFASTYAJUSTWONTLAST 🤯RIP CHESTER GONE TOO SOON
I was 10 when this came out so I'm 100% bias. Don't need to re-listen. This thing is one of the highest selling albums of all time. Couldn't get enough of it as a teen and I still dig it. 4/5.
Þótt ég sé ekki mikið fyrir rapp verð ég að viðurkenna að mér hefur alltaf fundist rapprokk skemmtilegt. Walk this way. Rock superstar og svo komu Linkin Park og gerðu smelli sem slógu í gegn. Ákkúrat þegar ég var móttækilegastur þannig að þeir eru að fá bönns af nostalgíustigum
Not first listen. 4 This is one that is really hard to give an objective review. Linkin Park was the first concert I ever went to, and I listened to this album on repeat in elementary and middle school. I do think that the album holds up well enough. Sure, it's not the most inventive or creative album, but I think the songs are catchy enough and it is exciting for what it is.
Of course this one is great. 4 stars. I do think some people overhype Linkin Park way too much. I remember when they came out and probably were never a top 15 band until recently.
Le son de mon enfance... Super rap, super guitares, les voix chantées par contre c un peu trop emo...
Good
A classic album. Really struck an amazing balance between catchy hooks and heavy songs. A couple of tracks that are weaker than others but all still very strong
A classic of the genre, which was never my fav genre but there is no doubt this is a great album.
Really enjoyed this powerful dramatic rock record. On the first listen so far they’re a bit samey other than the big hits but i feel they’d reveal themselves more distinct on subsequent listens.
Onhan tää ihan kova leka ja melkein mieli tekisi antaa täydet 5 tähteä, mut onhan tässäkin nää muutamat fillerit jotka ei oikein lähe. Kyllä tästä levystä tulee mieleen vanhat turnausmatkat
This is the first post-2000 album that I have been given so far. It's also one that I have listened to a few songs from over the past couple years. It should be interesting to listen to the whole thing. Track one, Papercut. I've definitely heard this one before. Great start. Track two, One Step Closer. Very familiar with this one. I enjoyed that one. Track three, With You. I can't recall ever hearing this one. Sounds really good especially within the context of the album. I like the electronic sounding sections. Track four, Points of Authority. Heard this one at some point. Very cool nu-metal guitar riff. Track five, Crawling. I've never really been into this song but I'm loving it right now. This album is just banger after banger. I'd hate to call this one early but I think we've got another 4 star record on our hands. Track six, Runaway. I really like the electronic sounds that they incorporated into this album. Another great song. Holy shit, I can't believe I slept on Linkin Park for so many years. Track seven, By Myself. This album is getting a lot closer to 4.5 stars for me at this point. It's actually amazing. Track eight, In the End. I've heard this one many times. My least favourite song so far but that's not really saying much since they are all hitting. Track nine, A Place for My Head. I like this one. Track ten, Forgotten, opens up sounding kind of like Biohazard. Vocals in the verse have an Alice in Chains feel. Sounds really good. Track eleven, Cure for the Itch. Starts off with some cool dj stuff. Eventually adds drum, piano and scratching. It's the only real break in pace so far. Track twelve, Pushing me Away. This song really takes the feeling of the album and sums it all up in one final track. The one is unmistakably Linkin Park. I'd actually love to give this one 4.5 but the site doesn't allow half stars. It's a very strong 4 for me.
Probably only ranking it as high as I am because early teen angst nostalgia…
2000. This album is infamous and hits the core of the 2000 era. A new blend of rap and new metal. Vocally distinct and so much depth. But In the End, it doesn't even matter because major critics don't seem to acknowledge it.
I really, really listened to this album a lot when it was released in my younger days. It still holds up as a wonderful mix of angry rap-rock stuff that gets melodic and in the right moments. Also, all the talk about mental health like here was kinda groundbreaking for a the early 2000s when you had to work and just function in our neoliberal world. Would I now revisit Linkin Park again? No. I already had my issues with the follow-up Meteora back in the days. I think Hybrid Theory has a lots of great tracks, but some filler stuff that all sounds musicially very similar. Highlights are definitely "Papercut", "One Step Closer", obviously "Crawling" and "In the End" but also "A Place for My Head" and "Forgotten". That's all of them. The rest is not so important, I guess.
"In the end" carries the album for sure. New discoveries: Crawling and One Step Closer
Classic linkin Park metal/hip hop blend
Hard hitting emotional album! If the rapping was better this is a 5 star album. Great vocals from Chester, dope synths, cool drum loops. Includes one of the best songs from the 2000s, with “In The End.” Not for everybody but you can’t deny the bangers are bangers!!!!
I was predisposed to dislike this record because of where hip-hop was in 2000. But… 25 years later, enjoyed quite a bit.
I hadn’t heard this album in 20 years and I was surprised to find how much I remembered. This album has a lot of bangers. The lyrics are obviously really angry, and sad in retrospect. But this record holds up and had a big influence at the time.
curto linkin park mas muito pesado para mim. in the end <33
man does this bring me back. i listened to Hybrid Theory and Meteora a ton growing up. I will say, it definitely hits a nostalgia vein for me, but i have a few critiques as i'm older 1. chester bennington is a GOAT. his voice is absolutely iconic, and remains the strongest part of LP for me. his ability to flip from a beautiful melody to his iconic screaming is unmatched. RIP to a real music giant. 2. mike shinoda i think is the weakest part of the group. his raps feel really really elementary to me. a few basic rhyme schemes, mostly compressed together in quick succession reminds me a lot of the Limp Bizkit-esque white people rapping of the late 90's to early 2000's. just because every end of a line rhymes does not make it a rap, in my opinion 3. the combination of rock and table turning is so brilliantly executed on this album. Hybrid Theory and Meteroa both are incredible at showcasing that classic LP sound, where guitars and synth melodies are swirled around and mixed so well. its such a unique sound - and really set the stage for what was possible while still hitting mainstream overall, a really really good listen. it holds up. i think Mike Shinoda's lyrics kinda drag this down for me, but their overall sound and Chester really raise the bar and showcase what is possible when you try to blend different genres. i'll still find myself listening to this a ton, and will remain a fan of LP forever.
This is so unfortunately a “you don’t know what you have until it’s gone” situation. RIP Chester. I don’t think I’ve listened to this album all the way through before but I knew a few songs scattered throughout. Not sure if it was just because it was the bonus edition that I listened to but I would’ve been happy with 10 or 11 songs as opposed to 15. Takes it down to a 4 for me but was absolutely jamming.
Wow, listening to this album for the first time in the wake of Chester Bennington’s suicide is heartbreaking. I’ve never been a Linkin Park fan, so I only knew the radio hits and singles. With that said, it’s clear this album had massive success because I recognized several of the songs. I think the radio overplaying of In the End really soured my initial thoughts of Linkin Park and kept me from pursuing more of their discography, which seems like a shame now. I enjoyed the hybridization of genres, the vocals, and the lyrical themes. I’m shocked at how much I enjoyed the album really. I don’t know how often I will revisit it as the lyrics and vocals hit so much harder knowing Chester’s situation; it’s a bit too burdensome for my soul.
Never got into Nu Metal or the “screamo” but there’s a reason this band endured past every other band. More dark and 2000’s existential moodiness for my taste but the melodies are still great. Memorable hooks, great hybrid production and energy pulsates through the whole album. Not something I’ll listen to on my own time but a an enjoyable listen and a bit of high school nostalgia
This came out at the height of the nu-metal era. I wasn’t their biggest fan at the time (I knew the hits), but I did enjoy their work - especially their later collaboration with Jay-Z. Reading about how Chester Bennington was a late addition, and that the original Xero demo became the foundation for the album, really surprised me. It shows just how much Chester brought in terms of songwriting and identity. Back then, the album felt too polished for my taste, which is ironic, since I liked Korn, whose albums were also produced with a lot of polish after their first album. Looking back now, though, that polish wasn’t just studio sheen; it came from a cohesive band that blended their influences into something sharper and more focused than some of their peers of that era.
Good album, brings back memories!
Egentlig ganske solid
I didn’t know I had angst till this came out.
👍
This type of music may have been memed from a five to a four
It’s ok. Not my type of rock. But I understand the appeal.
High school memories, High school anger. Maybe it’s all nostalgia but hey what music isn’t.
4.5 but highly influenced by nostalgia & cultural impact as a guy who was 18 when this came out
First time listening to this album. I didn't expect it to be so heavy. Linkin Park definitely has a unique sound that has to be appreciated. Including this album in the list definitely helps one understand the early 2000 era. I totally agree with this album being here. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Am I going to sit here and pretend I don't kinda like Linkin Park? They're the pinnacle of the rap/rock/pop metal era. As someone who was raging with hormones when they were big, this speaks to the angsty teen still deep inside me. This makes me want to go watch motocross and chain my wallet to my JNCOs. Bonus points in retrospect that Chester was genuinely depressed and not just acting (RIP). Brings a level of authenticity that's missing from other supposedly hardcore acts of the time (looking at you Slipknot - take off your masks and show us your souls!!!!)
I really don’t care for this era of turn table nu metal, and expected to be totally repulsed by this. But somehow I’m not. Chester’s vocals are excellent, the guitars rock, the production value is pretty solid, the melodies are catchy, and it’s a pretty dynamic album. Not to mention this album has at least four songs that were played non stop when we were kids. The songs in between are pretty fun too. These guys somehow transcend the genre they put on the map. Gonna come clean and say there were moments on here that reminder me a little of Hamilton. I probably won’t come back to this ever again, but it was an enjoyable revisit, and if someone says they like Linkin Park, I may no longer have the instinct of laughing in their face. Korn still sucks.
hood classic tbh. rip chester
Better than I expected
Good rock tunes thx !
Heck yeah that was awesome. RIP Chester
Feels like childhood
Don't care about the hate it gets. It's a good example of something slightly harder that made it on the radio. It's no SOAD, but it was still also what fueled lots of high school lifting sessions. It stays consistent through the album.
hey this was actually pretty good!! it definitely is repetitive in sound at times but they switch it up enough near the end to not get stale, and unlike limp bizkit and korn.. theres no extremely cringe edgy lyrics, outside of 2000s emo-core stuff
It’s not their best, nor their most meaningful, but it might have been their most popular. Some of these songs were on heavy rotation on my iPod nano in 5th grade. So I agree with a lot of the other reviewers that it’s a little juvenile, it’s almost like a nu-metal emo crossover. But I still like it
Great album. I kind of slept on LP when they first came out because I thought they were too 'mainstream' and I was too cool. I regret it now.
un'altra bomba atomica
Classic
Blast from the distant-ish past. Always good for a re-listen.
Paar epische nummers maar er zitten ook wat mindere tussen
love great glam rock
For some reason I feel like this album has always been a part of me, must be the thousands of hours on early youtube with in the end and crawling played in the background of every video lmao
Four stars for bringing me back to the day when music like this made me feel things.
Geggjuð plata elska Linkin Park
Electronic, Hip Hop, Rock, Nu Metal, Alternative Rock
Not much of a Nu-Metal fan. While this album has some of those issues, something about it just works for me. Maybe it's just nostalgia but this was a good morning listen.
I've heard a few Linkin Park songs and I didn't think much of them good or bad. Nu-Metal never made it on my music radar back in the day. I find now I kind of like it. Nice grooves and hip-hop elements with a metal edge. I definitely don't reject it out of hand which I know is blasphemy for some heavy metal fans. Overall, I enjoyed listening to this album quite a bit. I can understand why it was so popular. If I had been 15 or 16 in 2000 this probably would have been one of my jams. RIP Chester Bennington
First off, In The End is a classic and great song that automatically adds a star to this album for me. My step-dad introduced me to the song and I listened to it 100 times as a kid and did a sweet rendition of it at karaoke this year. I don't fully know what sub-genre of rock this is, but there are some cool, metallic sounds. It sounds hip-hop/rap adjacent, which is interesting. It's very angsty and a bit cheesy, but I think it's a solid album. 8/10.
Everyone my age has nostalgia for Linkin Park. It sometimes feels like they are getting something that I am not. I think this is a band I actually outgrew. With their new vocalist their three new singles became the top three of my radio station for months. So people have a lot of nostalgia for it. Which brings me to this album. What is great is Bennington's vocal performance and the big wall of sound that hits you on the choruses. These power ballads are still powerful if slightly formulaic. The songs are short, poppy and radio-friendly for what it is attempting to be. Consider this a low four.
CRAWLING IN MY SKIIIN
Excellent
Bangers 4.0
Barndom <3
i’m not big on linkin park but i found these songs decent, they just have a corny sound
Classic and good. Sorry Sean
woo! something fun and outside the box (for the standards of the 1001 list)! every criticism people throw at this is a compliment by others. angsty 70s hard rock has a place in the music nerd world, why not angsty 2000s nu metal? there's a reason why the reputation of Linkin Park has grown with their target audience. is the rawness smothered under a corporate sheen? sure, but that's always been the m.o. of the music industry. i'm not gonna be a hypocrite over it. and Papercut and In the End are massive tunes anyway. deserves to be one of the 1001? i don't give a shit if this is juvenile and angsty. this album is Important. Meteora may be my preference but this one earns its spot pretty handily
Some certifiable bangers on the one and for me, the trip as a whole is far too nostalgic to be reviewed objectively. Regardless, ‘Papercut’ is a good intro, ‘One Step Closer’ is distractingly juvenile, ‘Crawling’ and ‘in the end’ are hood classics, ‘Runaway’ has my favorite “how did they make that?” Sound of the album, ‘Cure for the Itch’ is groovy and ‘Pushing Me Away’ is upfront to a fault but a good way to wrap things up. Part of me wants to say 5, but I think 4 is more appropriate. 4.5
good album
4/5
Ach, die gute Erinnerung an die Anfangszeiten des eigenen Metal/Rock Geschmacks. Ein tolles Album was viel beeinflusst hat.
Not my favourite LP album but still has a couple of boppers.
Songs I remember, about half the album, are still good. Those 8 songs were on repeat when this album first came out. I think this was my first exposure to 'not everything is great' vibes if you know what I mean? I loved the high energy and Chester's voice really keeps you engaged with the songs. The less popular songs while not necessarily bad are more forgettable and don't evoke the same emotional response.
Likes it reminded me of schhhooool
This is probably a 3 but I grew up on Linkin Park so had to bump to a 4. I think the rapping bits are weak and are not really my style, but the overall vibe and angst captured here is great. I love this album.
🗯 Teenage angst, industrial polish, and hooks for days — you couldn’t escape it, and honestly, why would you want to? Hybrid Theory was everywhere. Blaring from cars, in bedrooms, in burned CD stacks with “DO NOT TOUCH” scribbled in black Sharpie. And while nu-metal hasn’t aged gracefully, this debut still slaps harder than it probably should. Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda’s one-two vocal punch was lightning in a bottle — anguish and aggression trading off with clinical precision. The production is clean and cutting, with distorted guitars rubbing up against icy electronics. It’s like Rage Against the Machine if they spent more time with Pro Tools and their journals. It’s easy to write off music like this as adolescent fury, but there’s real catharsis here — and melodies that never quit. For a lot of us, this was a first brush with heavy. And it stuck.
Not my fav. Sounds like one song
Linkin Park, articulating millennial angst. Haven't heard this album in decades. Thoughts hearing it now: the first half or so of the album is stronger than the second. Also, Chester Bennington's vocals were incredible, and kept the angsty lyrics from being too over-the-top. He sang like he meant it (and he probably did).
Erinnerungen! 4 Sterne mindestens.
Right in my teens! Some of the songs sound too samey, but "Cure for the Itch" stands out as a funky instrumental that would've been lost on angsty ol' me. There was something more melodic and techy to LP's rap-rock than their contemporaries' tunes.
4/5 - There is an urgency to this record. Most palpable in the first half. - Driving rock infused with punk angst - Nu-metal adjacent - This is hard rock that grew up in Hip Hop Culture.
What do you want from me here? Shall I pretend I was never thirteen? I don't know if this is musically *good*, all I know is that this comes on and suddenly I'm in Year 7 again, on my way home from school and shitting myself about my Art homework with some absolutely appalling Limewire rip of Points of Authority in my headphones.
I've only ever really heard the hits by them and never listened to a whole album. But even the non-single songs are pretty good. The guitars are really good and the rap vs singing call and response bits are unusually effective. Sometimes the longer bits of white boy rap falter and Chester does scream a bit too much. While I do like the singles and am ok with the others, I don't know that I'd just organically think, "Hey! I should listen to a Linkin Park album!"
Yeah it sounds a bit dated at this point, but damn does nostalgia hit hard. Still pretty solid album overall from me
To my friends this was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It's powerful, full of electronics, and it's the soundtrack to my late teens.
Immer noch kraftvoll.
Did not expect to enjoy it this much, but this album has such an addictive mix of hip-hop, pop, metal and punk. Funny that younger me found it a bit corny, and perhaps it is, but it's hard to deny that there is real talent in the blending of these genres while keeping things catchy. Tracking the roots of inspiration just hypothetically is such a fun activity
Listens: 3 (and probably another dozen over the 20 years this album has been out) Standout tracks: Points of Authority, In The End The first half of the album, maybe up until In The End is pure nostalgia for me, and absolute bangers to boot. The latter half is adequate and sort of fizzles out. But just because the music is nostalgic and many of the tracks are seared into my mind, doesn't make it objectively good. Sometimes - most of the time - the songs feel angsty and edgy for the sake of being angsty and edgy, with virtually no variety in the message, though I will concede the message is consistent. It's 38 minutes of "I feel feelings" type shit. Yea. We all feel feelings. We get it. It's less edgy and more corny, eyes-roll-into-the-back-of-your-head inducing when you're in your late 30s. But God damn when I was 13 this shit was great. Nu-metal in general isn't a particularly favorable genre for me. But of all the Nu-metal bands I listened to or in some specific cases still listen to, Linkin Park is pretty close to the top (perhaps behind System Of A Down). It's a 4 because I enjoy listening to it and even consider playing it from time to time if I'm in the mood
## In-Depth Review of Linkin Park's *Hybrid Theory* Linkin Park’s *Hybrid Theory*, released in October 2000, remains one of the most influential and best-selling debut albums of the 21st century. Fusing rap, metal, and electronic elements, the album defined a generation and reshaped the soundscape of mainstream rock. This review examines the album’s lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, and weighs its pros and cons. ## **Lyrics** *Hybrid Theory*’s lyrics are intensely personal, reflecting frontman Chester Bennington’s experiences with trauma, mental health struggles, substance abuse, and family discord[1][2]. The writing, primarily by Bennington and Mike Shinoda, is confessional and direct, channeling raw emotion without resorting to excessive abstraction or metaphor. - **Themes of Pain and Alienation:** Tracks like “Crawling” and “Papercut” delve into internal battles, with lines that evoke a sense of being trapped by one’s own mind (“Crawling in my skin / These wounds, they will not heal”)[3][1]. - **Responsibility and Self-Reflection:** Bennington noted that songs like “Crawling” are about taking responsibility for one’s actions, not blaming others for personal pain[2]. - **Anger and Rebellion:** “One Step Closer” and “Points of Authority” express frustration and defiance, resonating with listeners feeling misunderstood or marginalized[3]. - **Vulnerability:** Despite the aggressive delivery, there is a consistent undercurrent of vulnerability and a search for understanding, which differentiated Linkin Park from many of their nu-metal peers[4][3]. **Strengths:** The lyrics are accessible, emotionally charged, and relatable, particularly for adolescents and young adults grappling with similar issues[1][3]. The dual vocal approach—Bennington’s melodic singing and Shinoda’s rapping—adds dimension and variety to the storytelling[4]. **Weaknesses:** Some critics argue the lyrics can be repetitive and, at times, simplistic, relying heavily on angst and emotional turmoil without much nuance or evolution across the album[5]. ## **Music** Musically, *Hybrid Theory* is a masterclass in genre fusion. The album blends heavy guitar riffs, hip-hop beats, electronic sampling, and melodic hooks, creating a sound that was both fresh and commercially viable in 2000. - **Instrumentation:** Brad Delson’s guitar work is punchy but rarely showy, serving the song rather than indulging in solos. Joe Hahn’s turntable and sampling contributions bring a modern, electronic edge, while Rob Bourdon’s drumming is tight and dynamic[4]. - **Vocal Dynamics:** The interplay between Bennington’s impassioned singing/screaming and Shinoda’s rhythmic rapping is a hallmark of the album, providing contrast and energy[4][6]. - **Song Structure:** Most tracks follow a verse-chorus-verse format, with an emphasis on memorable choruses and dynamic shifts between quiet, tense verses and explosive, cathartic refrains[4][6]. - **Hooks and Melodies:** The album is packed with earworm hooks—“In the End” and “Crawling” are prime examples—helping the band achieve massive radio success[4][2]. **Strengths:** The seamless integration of disparate genres set a new standard for mainstream rock. The album’s energy is relentless, and the hooks are undeniable, making it accessible to a wide audience[4][6]. **Weaknesses:** Some critics find the music formulaic, with little variation in structure or tempo across the album. The heavy reliance on the loud-soft dynamic and predictable build-ups can make the album feel repetitive over multiple listens[5][6]. ## **Production** Produced by Don Gilmore and recorded at NRG Recordings in North Hollywood, *Hybrid Theory* is a polished, meticulously engineered record[2][4]. - **Clarity and Balance:** The mix is crystal clear, allowing each element—vocals, guitars, electronics, and drums—to stand out without overpowering the others[4]. - **Modern Techniques:** The band leveraged Pro Tools and digital editing, moving away from the raw, jam-based approach of earlier nu-metal bands. This resulted in a tight, radio-ready sound that was both aggressive and accessible[7]. - **Atmospheric Layers:** Hahn’s samples and effects add depth and atmosphere, distinguishing Linkin Park from other bands in the genre[4]. **Strengths:** The production is a significant factor in the album’s success. Every track sounds big and immediate, with a modern sheen that was ahead of its time in 2000[4][7]. **Weaknesses:** The high-gloss production, while effective, can also feel sterile or overproduced to listeners who prefer a rawer, more organic sound[5]. ## **Themes** *Hybrid Theory* is thematically unified by the exploration of emotional pain, alienation, and the struggle for self-acceptance[1][2]. - **Mental Health:** Many songs address depression, anxiety, and the feeling of being overwhelmed by internal struggles[1][3]. - **Family and Relationships:** The impact of broken homes, parental conflict, and betrayal is a recurring motif[2]. - **Identity and Self-Doubt:** The album frequently explores questions of self-worth and the desire to break free from negative cycles[3]. These themes resonated deeply with a generation of listeners, particularly teenagers and young adults facing similar challenges[1][3]. ## **Influence** *Hybrid Theory* had a seismic impact on both the music industry and popular culture. - **Mainstream Success:** The album sold over 32 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling debut since Guns N’ Roses’ *Appetite for Destruction*[2][3]. - **Nu-Metal Evolution:** Linkin Park’s approach—eschewing the machismo and profanity of peers like Korn and Limp Bizkit for a more introspective, melodic style—helped redefine nu-metal and broaden its appeal[7][4]. - **Production Trends:** The album’s digital, cut-and-paste production style influenced countless bands, leading to a shift away from traditional rock recording methods[7]. - **Cultural Touchstone:** For many, *Hybrid Theory* became the soundtrack of adolescence, capturing the angst and uncertainty of youth in a rapidly changing world[5][1]. **Strengths:** The album’s influence is undeniable, spawning imitators and opening the door for more genre-blending in mainstream rock. Its success also paved the way for Linkin Park’s continued evolution and experimentation in later albums[7][4]. **Weaknesses:** The album’s ubiquity and formulaic approach led to a backlash, with some critics and listeners dismissing it as music for angsty teenagers, lacking in depth or sophistication[5][7]. Over time, the nu-metal genre itself became oversaturated, and *Hybrid Theory*’s style was often copied but rarely matched. ## **Pros and Cons** | Pros | Cons | |------|------| | Powerful, relatable lyrics that speak to universal struggles | Lyrics can be repetitive and simplistic | | Innovative fusion of rap, metal, and electronic elements | Song structures and dynamics can feel formulaic | | Polished, modern production that set new standards | Production may feel sterile to some listeners | | Catchy hooks and memorable choruses | Lack of musical variety across the album | | Massive influence on mainstream rock and nu-metal | Associated with the oversaturation of nu-metal | | Timeless singles (“In the End,” “Crawling,” “Papercut”) | Sometimes dismissed as “teen angst” music | ## **Conclusion** *Hybrid Theory* is a landmark album that captured the zeitgeist of the early 2000s, offering a cathartic outlet for listeners dealing with pain, alienation, and self-doubt. Its blend of genres, polished production, and emotionally charged lyrics made it a commercial juggernaut and a cultural touchstone. While it is not without flaws—most notably, a tendency toward repetition and formula—it remains a powerful and influential debut that continues to resonate with fans old and new. For those seeking an album that balances vulnerability with aggression and innovation with accessibility, *Hybrid Theory* stands as a defining statement of its era—and a testament to the enduring power of music to connect and heal.
Enjoyed the album. Harder than I'll usually listen to but was to good to hear!
Surprisingly enjoyable
There are songs on this album that live rent free in my head and randomly pop up. Considering their debut album took different styles of music and mashed it together in a way that resonated with ppl worldwide is impressive (even if it's not my go-to genre).
He bred my theory till I park
youre asking an emo like me if i like linkin park?
I didn't believe a Linkin Park album would make the list — but I'm glad one did ❤︎₊ ⊹ While the rap rock genre did not age well, Chester Bennington made me feel less alone when I was a quiet, misunderstood but deeply perceptive child, and there was a time Linkin Park meant everything to me. "ROADS UNTRAVELED" brings me back to a defining moment in my life. — I stood by "Meteora" since I was twelve and will continue to stand with that album (c'mon, "Somewhere I Belong" and "Breaking The Habit" are gut-punches), "Hybrid Theory" is a close second for me. Chester put so much f**king emotion into his songs: Every word seems to be strung from the soul. The album feels very 2000s — I wasn't even old enough to consciously remember much from then, but man, it makes me feel nostalgic: "I kept everything inside And even though I tried, it all fell apart What it meant to me will eventually be A memory of a time when I tried so hard" Rest in peace, Chester.
I remember listening to this album when I was younger. There are a lot of great high energy songs that remind me of good times. This is one of those albums where I enjoyed listening to the whole thing, it didn't really have a song that I didn't like. I'm sure I will listen to this when the mood strikes me.
Speaking as someone who has never (intentionally) listened to Linkin Park, and who was born after this album came out, I was surprised at just how many tracks I recognised. And this is their debut... Damn. Normally I'm not a fan of music that forgoes melodies in favour of loud rapping, but Linkin Park really makes it work. A Place for My Head has a solid guitar riff and chorus melody, but the verses have some solid vocals in their own right. Reminds me of heavy metal and alt-rock from the previous decade. Plenty of other tracks, including Crawling, Forgotten, and Runaway, follow this formula of "rap during verse, rap-sing during chorus, and have a guitar-bass-doubled riff mixed to a heart-stopping level". It's not exactly a new idea, but it sounds great, so I can't complain. One thing I've noticed during this project is that I latch onto tracks I'm familiar with, even if they're technically worse songs. One Step Closer is a perfect example of this. I don't think I've heard the song in its entirely, but I've heard it referenced time and time again – especially the lines "Everything you say to me / Takes me one step closer to the edge / ANDIMABOUTTABREAK". Similarly, my primary experience with Crawling is the "crawling in my crawl" meme from way back when. And of course I've heard In the End, because who hasn't? Great riff melody in that track, solid backing vocals, great overall atmosphere... nothing to complain about here. There are no throwaway tracks, the album is a perfect length, and the cover art is cool as heck. I would've liked to see more variation in mood rather than a near-relentless onslaught of emo lines. Maybe some novel instruments, a few ballads dotted throughout, or any track that avoids rapping altogether. Hopefully Linkin Park heeded some of that advice later in their career. 4/5 Key tracks: One Step Closer, Crawling, In the End
I feel strongly about listening to everything with an open mind- call it the poptimist in me. I appreciate the time when rock and rap intermingled, and I like the having two lead vocalists (did that happen all that often?) I never bought or went out looking for this album back in the day but somehow know every song, which objectively makes it a pretty good d debut album even if I wouldn't consider it my favorite "type" of music.
Classic. Definitely some bias here
Fire
A really nostalgic album for me. Hard to fault it!
More enjoyable than expected? I had my federally mandated LP phase in high school, then had my anti-LP phase in college, and now I appreciate what they were doing on this album more than ever before. Some really cool deep cuts, fuzzy guitar riffs that make me nostalgic, and some influences from trip hop & downtempo that really make it flow. Honestly, would listen again. 3.5/5
Impressive combination of emo vulnerable lyrics with metal and hiphop inspired music.
Influential, I miss daddy Chester, fuck Mike
Catchy and gets in your head. Overproduced and corny sure, but at least it's enjoyable.
Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would! Linkin Park falls victim to a lot of the issues that nu-metal at large does. Radio rock friendly riffs and beats coupled with 3edgy5me lyrics. I was huge into LP when I was in middle school, but man, it is hard to take this music seriously, but I enjoyed it the same way I would watch Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers. Is it a great movie? Nah, but I had a good time.
Very catchy. Rap isn't my thing overall, but I thoroughly enjoyed some of the tracks. Fave tracks: Forgotten, Pushing me away. Would I revisit: definitely.
Sportsmetall får neppe nokon renessanse her i huset
Not quite at the angst levels needed to fully enjoy this I think. But there are still some absolute classic in here Specific rating - 3.9 Fav song- in the end Least fav- cure for the itch
🖤it's not a phase mom🖤
I liked it more than I expected
Even the songs I didn't know yet went hard, maybe it's just a nostalgia trip but was a great listen
This is probably the first GOOD album that I ever owned. But I can't remember if I bought Meteora or Hybrid Theory first. I would condiser HT to be the better of the two regardless. When I think of Nu Metal as a genre, I consider Linkin Park to be the icon or GOAT, RIP. Also, the remixed album of this was phenomenal.
I am a big fan of Emo Rock, but in the end, it doesn't really matter
Never been a Linkin Park fan but I really enjoyed this album.
Really enjoyed this album. Couple of standout tracks.
In The End still sounds as good as it did all those years ago
The favourite album of pre-teen me and probably the first album that deviated from what my parents listened to and had lying round the house. Was also the first album I enjoyed with a friend and bonded over. A proper trip down memory lane this was, probably around 22 years after the last time I heard it. I have to say I’m impressed with how good it still sounds to me - I was expecting it to be way more dated and cringe but I really had fun and actually heard things I’d not previously noticed or forgot that if I had noticed. Enjoyed the more electronic-y sounds on this and the guitar tone is good, even if it has since been well over-done (no fault of this album). I think this is still somehow a 4.5/5 for me down to 4 as it’s no longer my taste - however would listen again and again. Standout tracks (aside from the obvious hits): Points of Authority Runaway Cure for the Itch
Enjoyable vocals suck tho
I was not into Linkin Park when they emerged. Mostly cause the "rapping" was weak and I was not feeling the way Chester did. Not to downplay depression but it was not a surprise to me that he eventually committed suicide. I credit Christian Hand's breakdown of "One Step Closer" (not on original album release) for reintroducing this band to me and opening my ears to their talents. Hybrid Theory is actually a killer debut album. I did always like "In the End," which is the top track and there are really no skippers. The mixing of hip-hop, hard rock, and electronica works well and I have changed my opinion on LP. The band came up with a solid formula and made a definite splash. If you liked this, I highly recommend the remix album Reanimation...better than the original in my opinion. 3.53 stars for this hybrid record. (P.S. always thought they were from Lincoln Park, New Jersey 😆)
When Linkin Park debuted with Hybrid Theory and made their rise over the next couple years I didn't think much of them/it. It wasn't until 15 years later that I looked back and realized that they had compiled 15+ hits and that I had been a passive fan for a major part of my life. I did a deep dive through their discography and found out how much I enjoy a lot of their music. I'm not sure how they pulled it off but they managed to carve out an effective niche by somehow combining light elements from a handful of genres that I'm not really big on (rap, nu metal, screamo, etc.). It doesn't quite make sense but somehow it works and managed to gain pretty wide appeal. Perhaps it was just the right amount of angst and experimentation to work at the turn of the millennium. I remember how big Hybrid Theory was on its release. The hits that made the band have proven their enduring power and have remained relevant for 25 years even in the wake of Chester's passing. The deeper cuts have grown on me over time and really round out the album well. For better or worse Hybrid Theory's tracks are pretty formulaic as you can almost expect the same distorted guitar-riff amp up as Chester prepares to belt out his next anger-laden chorus. While it's become an aspect of their identity I wouldn't fault anyone for tuning out Linkin Park citing the anger and yelling as unpleasant. As much as I like Hybrid Theory I think Linkin Park improved over their next couple albums. I'd love to see Meteora or Minutes to Midnight show up on this list but I'll be surprised if they get a nod. Here's to hoping though. All in all Hybrid Theory is a really effective debut that established LP's style and formula right from the get go. I appreciate that they softened and refined themselves as they grew but I can't knock Hybrid Theory for putting them on the map. Even if it isn't my favorite LP album it is a deserving entry. 3.68 stars
Objectively, I shouldn’t like this. Nu-metal is SO of its time, and this is way overproduced. Early 2000s rock was in a really rough place, and it still hasn’t really recovered, in part due to how popular this and other bands were. However…Crawling, In The End, Papercut, One Step Closer, all bangers. This rules
Brilliant sounding as it was then
I really liked it but it sounded all the same.
I didn't love Linkin Park when they first hit the scene, but I've since come around to their music and definitely respect their legacy and influence. With all that being said, I was a little let down by this album. The singles were amazing, but the album as a whole was so up and down. A lot of the songs paled in comparison to their nu metal counterparts, and yes I'm including Limp Bizkit in that. Aside from the singles, this album's saving grace was its bonus tracks. "My December" and "High Voltage" were arguably the best tracks on the entire album. Normally I try to avoid bonus tracks as I want to experience the album the way it was intended when first released, but I'm glad I listened to these because it elevated the album for me. This is another 3.5 for me, but I'm rounding up because of how strong the high points are on this album, as well its influence and legacy.
I feel compelled to give this 5 stars even though the music is pretty awful. I was like 11 when I heard it and then after the singer killed himself I see all these angsty teenage lyrics in a new light.
Banger after banger. It’s corny, but that’s expected from new metal. Teenage me would give it a 10/10
Lmao. Never a huge LP fan growing up but hard to ignore the bangers on this album.
I missed this album! Listened 10 days later. The actual first album I recognized. 4 stars. It's not as good as Meteora which would get a 5. But I saved 8 songs from this album so it's awesome.
Didn't really expect to like this so much, but it fucks from start to finish. A dozen short, slick, hard-hitting tracks. Chester Bennington's lyrics are the driving force of the album and his vocals are supposed to be a big draw, but I found him annoying to listen to at times. Still a solid 4/5
Always been an awesome album that I haven't appreciated enough.
4+
This is it, the peak of late 90s/early 2000s nu-metal, the last gasp of millennial innocence before 9/11 and the peak of American illusions. I was entering middle school when I first heard this album, and to say it was major is an understatement. It was inescapable for an angsty 12-13 year-old. While there is definitely nostalgia, it doesn't hold as much sway as other albums that I would grow to love in my high-school/college years. But it's undeniably one of my favorites from the period, and I think it ranks above peers like Limp Bizkit or Korn (which have appeared on this list for me), which I think are good for exposure, but not more than 3 stars. This deserves a slightly higher rank than both of those.
Kicks ass. The rock/rap hybrid doesn’t age super well at times but it’s still a very unique and consistent listen. Goes even harder when on a run
There are definitely some really great songs here, but I do have a couple problems with this album. 1. The guitar tones aren't great and sound pretty dated 2. The production has always put me off of this album, I can't explain it but it seems a little too clean and perfect 3. I am not a fan of Mike Shinoda's rap parts. Besides that, there are some good songs here. Low 4.
probably not gonna be a very popular album among the people in this group, but i really liked this
I avoided this when I was a teenager because it seemed too "mainstream". I was just that cool. I've since heard a lot of the songs, so I was interested to see how the album as a whole would stand up and it's really solid. I get why it was popular. The layering of sounds is interesting and Chester's voice is obviously iconic. I kind of missed a trick as a teenager ignoring this.
it's corny and kind of bad but also pretty fun (yes i listened to this a lot between the ages of 9 and 12 why do you ask)
I unashamedly like numetal but will freely admit that the majority of full length records in the genre are majority filler slop to pad out a 40 minute runtime between the hit tracks about hating your stepfather. Hybrid Theory was critically acclaimed because it bucks the trend by being a listenable album start to finish. Truly a landmark for the genre. This album is the soundtrack to a thousand AMVs and dodgy YouTube stop motion animations. It’s fucking sick and if you look down on the lyricism as cringe or dated you need to take a good hard look at yourself in the mirror and a long huff of whatever air duster you have in the house then listen again.
This is a must listen if only as a document of the movement that linkin park was such a big part of. I’m not going into the pointless debate of whether they were real punks or not. They did what they did. And they did it well. 4 stars. 3 for the album. And one for a post 1990s album that should be here.
This album hit harder than I expected, I came into this album with low expectations because when I saw it was listed as rap rock and my mind went straight to RHCP and a flow of disappointment rushed over me. Thankfully it was nothing like that. Chester's vocals on this are so damn immaculate, it's the best achievement on this record (RIP to the legend). Only second to the production of course. Having listened to couple of mellow records previously this was a nice breath of fresh air. Hard-hitting, conscious, and manic. This was a great listen. Top 3 Favorites: With You, In The End, and Crawling no bad songs 4.00/5
Surprisingly, given my age and my music taste, this is the first time I've actually listened to this all the way through. It's a decent nu metal record. Way overplayed back in the day which is probably why I never listened to it.
Linkin Park. chido
nice to go back to and relive. great album
oh yeah. deep cuts were great after only hearing the hits
7.5/10
4/5. It is clear they took influence from previous rock bands while incorporating their own style. A good building on the genre.
RIP Chester Bennington. Favourite Songs: Papercut, One Step Closer, Crawling, In The End Least Favourite Songs: Forgotten, Cure for the Itch.
So much hate in the top comments but this came about to fill a hole for a lot of kids… I didn’t give it much attention at the time but it got big for a reason. Listening now it is a bit gimmicky, but what other debut album isn’t, at least somewhat. IMO Linkin Park got better with time, but this is a solid debut. 3.75/5
Pretty solid
Bring out the angsty middle schooler in me
Another instance of me being so happy to be born when I was, I don’t think I would be as open or receptive to how beautiful this album is if I were much older. The amount of sonic textures and different things happening on each song is amazing. BT-style stutter edits of Chester Bennington & Mike Shinodas voices. The heavy guitar powerchords. All sorts of bitcrush, lowpass and highpass filters. It’s all perfectly busy and full. Both “Crawling” & “In The End” are generational anthems with iconic choruses and lead melodies. “Forgotten” is my deep cut pick on the record. “Cure For The Itch” is incredible because it sounds like it for sure was made for the matrix movie, in a very earnest, cool way. “High Voltage” is a sweet bonus track, notable both for how it talks about what the numetal wave was experiencing in its newness at the time, and also admittedly being a bit campy. And that brings me to my only pitfall of this record - how campy, angsty, and slightly cringy it can be. I totally get it! Those things haven’t deterred me from enjoying the hell out of it, but I get it if that puts up a wall for you. Chester Bennington had such a one-of-a-kind voice, and he had it from the very start. Say what you will about Mike Shinoda’s whiteboy style of rapping, but the two for each other like a glove, such a perfect dynamic. A most respectful 4/5 stars
Solid all the way through, heavy hip hip influence while managing to define a new(ish) genre.
Actually think I enjoyed it more this time than when I was 18 with my criminal damage jeans and new rocks
Nostalgic it reminds me of old times
4/5
