Reviews (page 8 of 13)
I don't like this record as much as Bob Geldof does, but I recognize how important it is.
Not my favorite music genre. But, for being one of the original pillars for the genre and still being nice enough to the ears is an accomplishment. Energetic, not too distorted. Vocals do sound a little muzzled/low within the full sound/vibe for what, I would presume, should be a "vocals first" sound.
Seminal? Maybe. Seminal? Definitely.
I like punk, but I never understood the hype about sex pistols. They have always felt to me as plastics compared to other bands of the same genre. Also, I feel like the songs are really similar to each other, making the album a bit repetitive in the sound.
Todas las canciones sonaban igual basicamente jajaja, entonces todo el álbum es una canción que aunque muy interesante y buena, puede cansar
I really wanted to love this because I love Nana, but the voice killed me at times, def some bangers on here that have a time and place though
Baby's first punk album. Those who gave it a one can stick it's wide side up their arse.
Punk is not my thing but good album and iconic. Solid entry.
This is like a caricature of punk rock. This sounds like they got 4 guys who had never heard punk before, made them listen to a couple of Ramones and Richard Hell songs, and told them to make an album, which is more or less what actually happened in reality. Punk has a very annoying obsession with 'authenticity' and having a message over whether the music actually sounds good. I don't particularly care all that much that the Sex Pistols are basically the punk equivalent of a boy band, but I do care that half of the songs on this album sound identical to each other. It feels like a step backwards compared to what a lot of other mid 70s bands were doing at the time. There's only so far you can go with playing 3 chords really fast and saying 'fuck' every other verse. It's a musical dead end. There's even a pretty pathetic attempt on here to start a beef with the NYC punks, which as far I can tell was more or less ignored. Johnny Rotten can call them faggots all he wants, but the fact remains that the Americans did punk rock first and did it better, I will die on this hill. Pretty Vacant is such a downgrade from Blank Generation it's insane. Stuff I do like: - Rotten's line delivery is hilarious. I can't understand what he's saying half the time but it sure is fun to listen to. - This album has some of the most obvious ragebait lyrics ever. They were very deliberately trying to provoke people and get banned from the BBC and it shows. It's really funny. - Holidays in the Sun and EMI are surprisingly good? I really liked the guitar solo in EMI especially. - Also very funny is the fact that an entire subgenre of punk was spawned from people actually taking their shock lyrics to Anarchy in the UK seriously. I would probably be harsher on this album if not for the fact that I had to sit through a Yes album yesterday. I'll take even second-rate punk rock over prog any day. All in all it's fine but I have no idea why this has been upheld as the archetypal punk album when there was far better music being made at the time. Good publicity I guess.
Ok. I think I prefer my punk musically harder.
There's so much mythology around this one that it's hard to review. I don't know. My honest thoughts are basically: it wasn't as magnificently powerful as I kind of expected it to be, based on the way people talk about it; it wasn't as atrociously artless and nasty as I kind of expected it to be, either
I don't think is as good as people say it is.
Fairly iconic name, band and songs. The album just doesn't do much for me. 3/5.
3.5 Exactly like I remember from when I had this album and the poster in my wall as a 13 year old. The Sex Pistols were the Goose of their time
Salright
it's an extremely *cool* album, but it's not an album i revisit by choice. sorry to everyone who thinks of the sex pistols as the gods of punk rock
Exactly what I expected. Pretty good. I can't speak for their technical skill, but I like the energy, sentiments, and sound. The sine qua non of punk.
Prolific punk album that hits all the notes it needs to. Highlights: "Problems" and "Anarchy in the UK"
Interesting for it's historical significance, but there's better punk out there and John Lydon went on to better things with Public Image Ltd.
niiiiice return to this project! a classic really. ashamed i haven't listened before. sorry dad
This album undeniably rocks. Unfortunately, there's a lack of variety throughout but I enjoyed every song. 3.5/5
not bad. wouldn't listen to it again but i'm glad i've heard it now
Es los Sex Pistols, muy anarquico todo. Tiene un par de temas, y entiendo que afectó bastante, pero no puedo decir que me gustó mucho. Pero, nuevamente, no es malo.
No es mi estilo pero no me disgustó
7/10
Couple of bangers, but I can't handle a whole album.
Real talk: Johnny Lydon né Rotten is simply fucking insufferable. I saw him once with PiL and wow what a dick. Christ on a pony that guy is annoying. I pretty much wrote off him and his catalog, including The Sex Pistols. So imagine my surprise at how much I enjoyed Never Mind The Bollocks. Really straight forward punk rock with few bells whistles. Great rock riffs and energy.
"Dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun etc. etc...." *Johnny Rotten yells* There, that about sums it up. Seriously though, I didn’t mind it too much. Actually liked some of the songs which surprised me since I’ve pretty much disliked all the punk I’ve gotten on this list so far.
also some classic rock
This was fun.
If you’ve heard Anarchy in the UK then you’ve heard the album.
Overrated as fuck but influential. 3/5.
Bom, rock poluído mas é bom
Rotten's vocals grate a bit at times, but a strong punk album.
A very influential, idiosyncratic record which was never replicated. Sex Pistols have a nicely off kilter approach to throughly commercial punk music which has kept it at the centre of culture for 50 years. When it hits it hits - the singles off of this LP are as big as they get, but the more numerous album tracks are just the same as the singles but worse. It’s this that stops Never Mind the Bollocks being the all time classic you feel it should be, but it’s no less iconic as a result.
Had its moment in history. Didn't really stand the test of time for me in this moment. That said - I am an old fart now.
Did they rip off Rage Against the Machine's song title? If you're not going to be reading about it, you better be moving to it (I think to myself). So I danced to half of the songs while making strawberry jam. GOOD ENERGY.
Quintessential punk rock. Absolutely CANNOT believe that this is their only album. Their reputation precedes them, both good and bad.
Punk
8/10 i like it
Another example of an album that feels/is/was influential, but just doesn't hit me as hard as its reputation. It's everything that I would have assumed early punk to be. It's loud, the vocals are angsty and almost not even singing, and the messages are clear. But through it all, nothing here came across as very genuine, if that's even the right word. All in all, it's fine. But I don't feel any more like a punk now than I did before I listened. Highlight: God Save the Queen Lowlight: Bodies
Some real iconic tracks on here
I’m a tad bit conflicted on this one. The frontman, Johnny Rotten’s story is so fascinating and messed up that it alone makes the album almost a 4. On top of that, this is actually culturally relevant. It impacted the Punk scene so immensely that it wouldn’t be inaccurate to call this one of the more important albums of all time. The only problem is that I’m not the biggest fan of Punk music. And this is the most Punk Punk music you could possibly be, with Johnny wailing about abortions and anarchy and what not. I’ve rolled plenty of Punk so far. Some of it surprised me, some of it was borderline unlistenable, but they’re fairly consistently hard to listen to for extended periods of time as a whole. Even my favorite Punk albums so far haven’t hit the 5 mark, I believe. So yeah, unfortunately it’s not really my genre, but I can still enjoy and appreciate the hell out of it. And this album is legendary. When this was released I think the entire UK was in a state of panic, which is both Punk but also Metal as hell. “Anarchy in the U.K.” and “God Save the Queen” are 2 classic songs that I’ve heard many times before. They’re legendary in their own rights. But somehow, I liked “Sub-Mission” the most out of any song on this album. Bit of a deep cut, but I don’t know. It was just good. A little goofier than the other songs, but it’s just very high energy and fun. Another reason I think I’ve convinced myself to give this a 3 is that I for sure could not always listen to Johnny’s voice. It does everything it needs to do here, but I didn’t really want to spend the entire day listening to it over and over again. 38 minutes of an absolutely seminal performance. If I was going to be objective, this is a 5. If I’m being subjective and personal, it’s a very high 3. Not necessarily a point against the album, it’s just a lot for one guy. This is the only album that the Sex Pistols ever made, which is perhaps the most Punk thing about the band in general. Got in, got out, died young, and possibly killed some people. Now that’s the real anarchy, and tragically ironic. For real though, go see what kind of messed up stuff Rotten was caught up in before he died. Bro had an insane life.
Listening to this album was pretty much what I expected to happen... I have refused to listen to the Sex Pistols because Anarchy in the UK is my second most despised song of all time behind Killing in the Name of by Rage Against the Machine... But here I am enjoying the rest of the album. I love the production sound, I love the energy, I love the simplicity, and the singing is so unique and recognizable that even though it is atrocious, it works and I don't mind it. I enjoy the lyrics for the most part as well. I probably should have given this album a chance instead of relying on the one song I knew.
I forgot how much I enjoyed some of these songs. I remember making mom/Nana listen to “ Anarchy in the UK”. She must’ve thought I was crazy or I had a problem! She probably was very concerned.
very repetitive, but pretty awesome too
I get the vibe & point but just a lot of noise for me
I feel for these punk albums to really resonate you had to actually live through them at the time
Holidays in the sun - 3/5 Bodies - 1/5 No feelings - 2/5 Liar - 3/5 God save the queen - 2/5 Problems - 4/5 Seventeen - 3/5 Anarchy in the UK - 3/5 Submission - 4/5 Pretty vacant - 3/5 New York- 2/5 EMI - 3/5
Pretty much the big bang for millions of people, thousands of bands, hundreds of genres. THe world would be a very different place if this album didn't exist. Every sensor and controversy hyped these songs beyond what they carry by themselves. Reminds me of The Velvet Underground and Nico, but i love that album and this one is just as impactful, but not as memorable for me at least. Crazy that all the influence they carried was from only one album (and two bassist to be honest). I wish I liked all the songs more than I just liked their lyrics.
So nostalgic to hear this album again. It makes me want to go to their show.
not bad, i expected to liked a little more but maybe i just dont vibe with the band, hope to change my mind with their other albums
Oddio, importantissimi per la musica Rock. Ma sembrano i backstreetboys per disagiati.
Er zijn zeker dagen zijn waarop ik dit 4 sterren vind maar had gisteren niet echt behoefte aan veel geluid
Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit. Very inconsistent album with high highs (Holidays in the Sun, God Save the Queen) but also a lot of mid. Giving it 3 for now, maybe 4 on a good day.
Solid
Now that's a nice album cover! Looks like a poster. My favorite style. I've heard of the* Sex Pistols** for sure, but it occurs to me I have no idea what their whole deal is. It turns out, this is their only studio album! It also turns out that even though I'd only heard their singles 'Anarchy in the UK' & 'God Save the Queen', the rest of the tracks here are pretty similar! OG punk rock, I guess. Good energy. Trilled [r]s before Cardi B was even born. Slur count = 2. Kinda interesting (for me) to hear the Berlin Wall mentioned in a song ('Holidays in the Sun') from 1977, because basically the only time I ever hear about the Berlin Wall is re: its removal. Kind of like hearing a song that mentions the World Trade Center pre-2001 I guess (which of course there's a whole list of, lol (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Trade_Center_in_popular_culture) but it's still novel to me as a millennial, OK!?) *I'm sorry, even though the literal album title has "THE" in it, you're telling me the band is actually called "Sex Pistols"?? Okay... that makes the 12th member of my the-less list, after Wu-Tang Clan, Carpenters, Beastie Boys, Pretenders, Pet Shop Boys, Beatles, Talking Heads, Eagles, Pixies, Cocteau Twins, & Fugees. **Disturbing name*, on reflection. I wonder if there's a flower-themed cover band called (the) Sex Pistels. Hope so. *Wiki tells me that they hung out at a boutique called "Sex" with a bunch of other musicians. Compelling lore. Like the UK music version of the Algonquin Round Table!
Nice album name
I’m torn between 4 for the nostalgia factor or 3 for how interesting I actually find it to be today
Saved? ✅ Would listen again? 🤔 Would recommend to anyone? ❌ Would buy on Vinyl? ✅
Ein einflussreiches Album, das einzige der Sex Pistols. Auch heute noch interessant zu hören. 3/5
Almost a 4/5 but just one or two forgettable songs
Ok, I have to admit that I wrote a whole long essay for college on the monarchy and wrote a few paragraphs about media/music depictions and attitudes toward them, which obviously included this album. Yet, I had only read the lyrics, never heard the songs themselves. I was surprised, actually, when this was revealed as my album of the day, that I couldn’t recall any Sex Pistols songs as they seem so prominent in music history. It was a crazy (kind of loud) journey listening to this album, and perhaps I shouldn’t have decided to listen to it right before bed. I enjoyed the heavy sounds though and (kind of repetitive) lyrics screaming about anarchy. Can definitely see why it caused such a stir at the time. Rating: 3.
Ok
Better than I thought it might be, short and punchy
i actually kind of liked this album, it's more similar to what i typically listen to in terms of instrumentation, so i was able to appreciate that aspect of the music at least. once again the songs all kinda sound the same at first listen, but i'm sure if i listen to it more again i'll be able to appreciate the differences between songs more. as for song, i liked holidays in the sun a lot! that was for sure one of the standout songs for me.
Holidays in the Sun 3/5 Bodies 3/5 No Feelings 4/5 Liar 2/5 God Save The Queen 4/5 Problem 2/5 Seventeen 3/5 Anarchy in the UK 4/5 Submission 3/5 Pretty Vacant 3/5 New York 3/5 EMI 3/5 Overall Album: 2.83
Meh...
Absolute statement into to the opening track of this album. Vocals couldn’t sound more stereotypically punk. Really extensive use of power chords in this track. Exactly what you kind of expect from this genre (in a good way!). Can actually really hear influences that the likes of Green Day would take on in “Holidays in the Sun”. Darker turn with the second track bodies, both in the sense of the intro guitar riff and the actual lyrics. Actually seriously vile lyrics in this one, a hard listen. Unless I’m missing some satire here it’s not very punk of them. Very Blitzkrieg bop-esque intro to No Feelings Fun use of power chords with intermingling percussive strokes. Vocals are actually hard to concentrate on in this track for some reason. Liar comes straight out of the bat making extensive use of palm muting. Can really see where future pop punk groups are taking their influence from with this track. Nothing much to say about God Save the Queen, it’s just a decent song with a recognisable riff, I like it. The intro to Problems is really interesting, it’s actually almost more reminiscent of hard rock guitar riffs. But the vocals in the chorus definitely kicks things back into a punk feeling again before it gives you a little glimpse of that hard rock riff again. Seventeen potentially has the whiniest vocals of the album so far. It doesn’t have a catchy chorus section though. Easily repeatable. I can imagine this one does well at live performances. Anarchy in the UK is obviously without a doubt the most recognisable track on this album. Even as someone who hasn’t listened to any Sex Pistols. I really love the guitar riff in the bridge section. Crazy shoutout to our homegrown paramilitaries here too. There’s some great lead over the main riff in Submission. And on that, the actual up-down progression of the main riff is really simple but sounds great in this. Pretty Vacant draws out its intro a little bit more than previous tracks on the album, leaving you waiting for it to get going. But it definitely does get going. Again some almost Lynyrd Skynyrd-esque lead being played over the main riffs in this one. New York is an extremely short song that somehow feels unfathomably long for its runtime. Again more diatonic palm muted power chords. Punk staple. Really love the simple outro solo to this one. EMI is an understandably angry song and serves as a real statement with it being the final track on the record. Really cool solo in this one. Reminds me of some MCR solos. Overall this was a fun album. Would definitely listen to it again. Favourite track would probably be Problems. Bodies is by far my least favourite, definitely didn’t enjoy that one. 3/5.
I’m not into old school rock that much
A totally listenable album (unlike the Germs). Johnny Lyndon's vocals are playful and full of melody, despite their reputation for introducing speak-singing to the masses. A loveable, sneering cartoon. The guitars are satisfyingly mid-range, the tempos aren’t too fast and the hooks are plentiful.
I suppose the repetition is ‘the point.’
It is extremely difficult for me to figure out precisely how much cynicism is needed to properly digest The Sex Pistols' legacy. I just know for sure that the answer isn't "none". But the fact of the matter is that even if The Sex Pistols were kind of insidiously engineered by Malcolm McLaren to sell rebellion to angry youths as a product, The Sex Pistols also happened to be comprised of individuals who were genuinely angry and felt a need to lash out at society. Although, it was all part of the plan; The Sex Pistols had catchy songs, and even a few great ones. But their real success came from turning the band into a spectacle, and by then kind of bluffing about inventing punk, until it was true to enough people that it didn't matter. Sid Vicious was a violent, unstable lunatic, and Johnny Rotten later became an unprincipled, sell-out grifter. They pretended like they couldn't play their instruments. McLaren kept lying about inventing punk (even though Ramones had a full length out a year before this and an ocean away) then telling the truth about using it opportunistically, then making even *more* money off of the ensuing outrage. The band even lashed out at other entities within the scene, look at New York off of this very album. The Sex Pistols gained their legacy by shouting everyone else down, climbing up on their crucifix, and declaring themselves The Messiahs of The Punks. And they're already on the cross, so who are we to argue? Anyways, the legacy of The Pistols truly got signed, sealed and mailed when the spectacle devoured them completely, resulting in two events. Firstly, the band almost immediately collapsed. Second, Vicious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen both died under violent, slightly mysterious circumstances. He most likely killed her, then overdosed during the investigation. This all being said, whether or not I like it, this all contributed to The Pistols becoming one of the most influential bands of the punk movement; maybe one of the most influential bands ever. And it helps that the music is at least pretty good. This album is catchy, fiery, and provocative enough from start to end that it at least keeps me engaged. And there are several classics here: God Save The Queen, Anarchy In The U.K., Pretty Vacant, Holidays In The Sun. I do think that, even at this time, *lots* of bands were doing punk better though. The aforementioned Ramones had more raw energy, The Clash were more dynamic writers (and they actually, really stood for something). The Damned were better, X-Ray Spex were better. And if you're willing to go back a good few years, The Stooges were also better. That being said, Never Mind The Bollocks does stand on it's own. And even if I don't really like it, The Sex Pistols have their niche carved out forever. It could be argued that The Sex Pistols perfectly embody some truth about punk, but I still can't go higher than a 3 here. It's an enjoyable album that is completely inseparable from the complicated, ugly legend of the band that made it.
Top Songs: Bodies No Feelings God Save The Queen Anarchy in the UK
I was pretty excited when I saw this one pop up. I like punk and I like screamy noise for the most part. Somehow I never listened to this in all my days of listening to loud and aggressive music. But hey, I was only 3 when this came out so... I love all that this cleared the way for and what it represents, but musically it just doesn't blow my hair back. If I discovered it at 14 I would probably love it today, but on first complete listen I'm not finding anything to move the needle much past 3 stars.
More interesting as a historical document than an enjoyable listen beyond the two big hits, even if the songs are much more competently played than the band's reputation would suggest
Kivasti rokkasi ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Mielenkiintoista kuulla tätäkin, mutta genre ei ole lähimpänä omia mieltymyksiä ylipäätään.
2/11/26 meh. 5.5/10
Yeah niceeeeee
Edgy Fave track: God Save the Queen
Punky
Undeniably the energy on the album is great. It feels radical even if it’s undermined by the by subsequent revelation that John Lydon is an idiot. I don’t think I’ll go back to it again but I did enjoy it.
Funny how they release only on album and are THE punk band that is the most known. It's nice more like 3.5. The live performance list have been crazy tbh
It’s nice, I’ve never really listened to the Sex Pistols bc I find the fact that they were basically manufactured to be punk by Malcolm McClaren cringe. I think punk is a genre where the message behind the music should shine through. That being said, musically, it’s good punk, what can I say?
Spin baby, spin!
I have a really hard time taking Brits who call themselves anarchists seriously. Your accent is far too goofy.
6.5/10 lots of fun punk songs
Another hole in the collection where I'd heard most of it, but never the whole album. Glad I've filled that now. It doesn't feel as vital as it might have done in the 70s, but it still has an energy to it.
I'm not much of a punk fan but I did enjoy my listen of this album. It was punchy and energetic. It made me feel like I was an angsty and self-important, so I would say they did their job in conveying their feelings well enough for me to absorb that. I found it interesting to learn more about the formation of the band and the little shop that inspired their iconic aesthetics.
3.5
GOING IN: Dreading it properly LISTENED WHILE: doing a sudoku FAMILIARITY: Know a few songs SKIP RATE: Played it straight through REPLAY VALUE: Might come back to it DISCOVERY CURVE: Warmed up nicely ALBUM ARC: Pretty even, consistent VERDICT: Better than expected BODY'S VERDICT: Decent head wobble FAVOURITE TRACK: My Rating: 3 I'm no fan of punk, and I'm surprised I enjoyed this. What I like about the Sex Pistols and the (British) punk movement is that they were trying to get people to think for themselves, to stop accepting what those in power were (are) dictating to us. We need another movement like this. Now. Wake up people.
oh this is so much better than the black flag album. this is fun. this is punk. the instrumentals are better and crispier. the vocals are grungy and actually on pitch and not flat. im a fan. the guitars and the drums are so fucking good. its just fun and wacky! 7/10
I liked this more than I normally like punk, but not enough to like like punk
Important more than great
coool
Ikkje favorittalbumet mitt, men gøy ein sjelden gang
Sex pistols. A band that I feel like I would have had their posters up in my room and been trying to act like in high school. Sharp gritty offensive and raw.
3.5/5⭐️
really fun and solid punk album! really fun to listen to
My rating 3.3 Loud snarling rock and roll. Essence of punk music.
enjoyed this one a lot more than i expected! morally can't rock with this band but i know how important this record was for the foundation of what punk is today. really liked the instrumentation throughout, you can really HEAR the instruments. i hate how polished/manufactured so much of today's instrumentation sounds - bring back real guitars and drums!!
5/10
I'm having mixed feelings listening to this now. The violent nihilism doesn't have the same impact, feels tired and entitled.
Punk. Schoppen. Boos.
almost 50 years since first hearing this and it hasn't changed a bit either love it or hate it....
I like punk and I don’t hate this album but not a fan of Johnny Rotten and from what I’ve read, these guys were a manufactured band. I don’t know about all that but this is an ok album.
Didn't dislike it as I thought I would. Obviously a very important album but loses some of its impact when listening to it in the modern day
I feel like green day got a lot of inspiration from this album. And for that reason I thoroughly enjoy the band. However the vocals are slightly maddening
As far as punk rock goes, these guys are the real deal. But also as far as punk rock goes, I just really don't enjoy it.
These guys are a nerfed Guns N’ Roses. A lot of albums have this issue where the songs sound too much alike. But this time it was actually so bad that sometimes, when one song ended and the next one started, I thought it just was the same song that wasn’t finished. I did however like “God Save The Queen”, “Problems” and “Pretty Vacant”.
Punk as a genre has really grown on me since I was a teenager, but I remain suspicious of the Sex Pistols, who've always struck me as style over substance. The same three chords over and over, with childishly "shocking" lyrics over the top. But the raw energy of the record is compelling, it's clearly a political and musical landmark, and a few of the songs have some genuinely great guitar riffs.
I mean… nobody really listens to this.
Fun! I cranked out a quick & dirty workout this afternoon listening to it and it helped keep me pumped. I won’t lie, the songs started to run together for me but of course the ones I already knew stood out more. I actually enjoyed this more than expected but I will give some credit to the endorphins from working out. Not sure I would listen to this in entirety again. Just a select song or two is enough for me. Standout song: Pretty Vacant 01-12-2026
No. 75 I really like the instrumentation, like the drums, guitar, and bass. But I couldn't decide how I felt about the singing.
Not bad just not for me
The energy of this album is palpable. It doesn’t ever truly let up, and in many ways it’s one of the most straightforward albums out there. Regardless, I am of the opinion that this album hasn’t aged well. It’s touted for its boldness, but isn’t even really in the discussion as a progenitor of punk. If this album did anything, it made punk enter the mainstream. Despite the punk label, many aspects of the record feel factory made and a little too polished. Not a bad listen, just a victim of its own success.
This isn't as dreadful as I initially feared, and it certainly has had a huge impact when it was released. But, you know, both the music and Johnny Rotten's vocal delivery get old really fast. I'll round it up slightly for the impact, but it's still not on my shortlist for re-listening. 3/5
this feel like default punk music. its good but not too interesting
You can see how this was revolutionary at the time, but looking back, with the knowledge of how manufactured the group was and how much of a phony Lydon has turned out to be, it loses it's edge.
Idk if it was just overly British but something didn’t particularly hit for me in the way I was expecting
Back when I was still discovering "legendary" albums from the past, I listened to this album with high expectations. I thought it was garbage. Now, listening again probably 20 years later (with much lower expectations), I don't think it's that bad. Still not my kind of music, but not unlistenable. Anarchy in the UK is a great track.
For a bunch of guys who had basically no musical talent, no training, and were all around a-holes, it’s hard to imagine how they put out such an incredible debut. I had thought this was famous more for the antics of these punks but the songs are really good
not my taste
Enjoyed this. Definitely deserves to be on this list.
3.5
6.8
Punk. Not great but fun.
It's all been said before... I have this on my shelves, but it doesn't get played too much. I really want it to be better, and in places it defies the Pistols' reputation of not being able to play, but there are times when it's just not very good. It's deserved iconic status will forever ensure that it retains it's place in music history. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Iconic ★★★☆☆ (6/10) Total reviewed : 177 Already owned : 40 Purchased : 6 To buy : 5 Nope : 126
I was never really into them when I was younger - they are the quintessential punk band and a few of the tracks here are obviously recognisable. Worth a listen just for historical reasons but not something I would listen to regularly.
not bad pretty boring, but really liked anarchy in the uk................ nice drums
Decent album
The lore behind the band is better than the music. 6/10
There’s no denying the influence of this album. Also incredibly well produced for its time and genre. But aside from the 2 or 3 hits, I find myself getting bored listening to this. It’s incredibly one-note even by punk standards.
Classic British punk, lots of commentary lots of nonce yelling
When I was a kid there was a group of punks that live up the road. Black studded leather jackets, multi coloured spikey hair, the full works. I remember my old man (who was a conservative gentleman) once said, "you need people like that in the world, as it keeps things interesting, if everyone looked and acted the same way things would be boring. Also if you're confident enough to look like a fucking parrot, more power to you." This album reminded me of them, not really my type of music, but they were cool people from my past.
Better than I expected it to be. I can see their influence in pretty much every punk band to follow. Not my genre, it kind of all sounds the same to me.
Nice to vibe to but nothing really more than that. Doesn't pull me in really but wouldn't really mind listening to it more often.
i sure hope none of the things these fellas are singing about are still relevant! 3/5
Jepp
As an album it's not very good but worth it for God Save the Queen and Anarchy in the UK The punkiest pioneers of punk at their angriest best.
It’s a historically important record. You should know it but it’s monochrome after a while. Definitely very good and I respect what it means to people but I’m not over the moon about it.
Fun and sloppy. Good afternoon listen.
it just got worse over time. ouch. i thought this was gonna be a good experience, after listening to the first part sadly i don't really like this. at all. at least the 'singing' made me laugh a few times
Classic punk rock. Not my fave, but I respect it.
Surprisingly not bad
I enjoyed this album
all the songs sound very similar. not one songs stood out to me. but the cultural impact and backstory is amazing.
Repeat listen
This is kinda tough, nobody listened to the Sex Pistols for their impeccable songwriting and musicianship. If you wanted Punk and good songs you could listen to the clash, Patti smith or the ramones. The Sex Pistols are just about the scene, the attitude, the show. The songs on the album aren’t all that bad, energetic and anthemic, but that’s not what you’re here for. Anyway three stars for history, probably less than that as a punk rock album.
British Punk Rock Mid-70’s “Simple-Meat-And-Potatoes Rock” Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Warwick Nightingale, Malcolm McLaren, Glen Matlock, Josh Lydon Most notable songs: Anarchy in the U.K., God Save the Queen
An album I know quite well though I don’t know if I’d call it a true album. Good listening, really not sure about some of their politics in hindsight though, (Bodies!?).
Influential? Absolutely. Not my cup of tea? Absolutely.
Very influential and high energy. Its kind of a mess at times. Standout songs: No Feelings Anarchy in the UK
Did not like the vocals, he wasn't in tone and at times was just shouting
Great album to listen to after a long hiatus. This album was one of my college anthems.
So UK Liked the high energy of it
Definitely giving 70s punk.
Important in musical history, fun to listen to, but not at all the best early punk out there
Punk and prog are opposites, but The Sex Pistols are trying to take a punk attitude and put more structure to it which feels anti-punk. Sounds decent and they're one of the more foundationally popular punk bands for a reason. Worth a listen.
Aesthetic. A very influential album. Some surprisingly good compositions, but at times hang around a little too long for what they are.
It's a bit of an oversimplification to write then off as a "boy band" but they are hugely overrated. This album has their two great songs, though, and they were hugely culturally impactful.
Pretty solid 70s punk. Nothing crazy standout, but there are some classics here. For one of the "heavy hitters" I feel like the songs are a little samey. Good to jam to, but compare it to something like London Calling a couple years later and it's missing that variety and character. Standout tracks were "Holidays in the Sun" "God Save The Queen" and "Anarchy in the UK." Overall a fun listen but it didn't do much to move the needle for me. 3/5
Meh. Too punk and chaotic for me. But not boring. 3/5
This album rocks. It rocks sort of the same way throughout, which limits its appeal for me a bit. I'd give 3.5 if I could.
Some great songs on this but all sounds too similar after awhile
Gøy gammal punk. Punk var aldri min greie, men moro bakgrunnsmusikk
Historically important, empirically crap.
Good energy, obviously important album. Kinda sounds like trash but also some nice hooks. 3.4/5
Better than expected! Expected harsh, obnoxious, monotone punk but this was a nica musical journey. Some hits in there, lovely!
Not bad for a manufactured boy band
It was good but the only words I could understand were “god save the queen” the rest were just slurred words and mumbles
Punky. Pretty good but not my wheelhouse
I’m definitely a huge fan of the energy in this album. The fast drums and guitar strumming pair very well with the vocals. I did have to take a break half way through this album due to it being a bit repetitive. The strong British accent and singing is quite distinct and would not be to everyone’s taste. Great background music. Would listen to this album again but probably not in its entirety.
Classic punk, brings back memories
bof trop intense
It's cool and fun, and I get the importance of it, but I just don't enjoy listening to it.
Very straightforward punk. It's enjoyable enough but i remain un-floored.
Just bog standard punk. I used to not like it at all, it's better than I remember but still nothing special to me. I think I've written before that coming from metal, I went straight to hardcore so that will always be my preference over this style I know it played a role in starting punk but meh, I'd rather listen to The Damned for early English punk Highlights: Submission
This was decent
Sehr Punk. Sehr laut.
Nice, visą laiką rėkia.
How to rate such a mitical and influential album that is so bad?
Can't believe they only had one studio album. Very punk rock of them tbh.
Not a fan of punk but this album was acceptable.
Couldn’t connect with it. Maybe need to explore more of their works.
It’s clearly decent but not my kind of punk
- bombastic, in your face, pissed off, loud, and distinct - I sailed the seven seas in 2013-2014 and downloaded this album when I wanted to try getting into punk, and I remember being hit by this massive, bright wall of sound as soon as "Holidays in the Sun" began - listening to this album back then prompted a semi-deep dive (deep for an 18- or 19-year-old) into other punk groups like Husker Du, Fugazi, and Descendents, which I ended up listening to much more frequently than any of the NMTBHTSP tracks - no other thoughts (although "can you be signed to a major label and still be punk?" comes to mind), but including a diss track about your old record label is a pretty ballsy move
Punk rock. As it is with punk rock it is sometimes/mostly annoying as it aims to be.
Eeh, a couple of memorable things in there but mostly forgettable.
Not a fan of punk in general, but recognizing this is the seminal album of the genre.
Love the energy, but by the end the songs all start to sound the same.
I am not the most radical leftist you would come upon. To be honest I would label myself as a centralist for most of the time. But yes, I’m one of the anglophiles of all time. I don’t support the conservative values of the monarchy though; I just consider it as something that’s really pretentious and cool cause the best thing is that the King is just a symbol. But yeah it’s right to say that England has no future. Really nihilistic saying but also as old and cliche as usual. As for John Lydon and his friends, I wish they won’t disappoint me when they come to me in the form of PiL. 3/5
Ce n’est pas le genre de musique que j’aime écouter.
Bratty, snotty, and (intentionally) annoying. Beyond that style though, there's very little substance. Musically it's the same chords bashed out again and again; it takes until "Submission" and "Pretty Vacant" for interesting chord progressions to appear. This might work if the lyrics had a purpose behind them, but they're only vaguely political and more often confrontational just for the sake of it. The antichrist / anarchist flip is really clever and the most effectively rebellious moment, but very little else comes close to it. Elsewhere things are more tiring than exhilarating - by the 10th time Lydon has snarled "problems" you just want him to shut up. In a way this rocks, with the overwhelming vocals and simple loud songs. For the same reasons, it's hard to get through all twelve songs in a row.
One of the better punk albums I have heard, but still not a fan of most punk music. The occasional track is great, but listening to an entire album starts to grate on my nerves. This one didn’t do that, but still not an album I’m ever going to seek out on my own.
A few familiar 'classics' but other than that a solid album.
3.5 - good ol British punk even though they weren’t very good
Kinda meh. The album is alright but I am not a huge fan of punk rock. I like the message but the music isn't anything mind blowing.
Yep its the sex pistols debut. Transformative when I was younger and it was a stepping stone to other better music. But God save thr queen, pretty vacant, new York still hits. Hopefully, john lydons public image albums are still to come
Never Mind the Bollocks felt less like an album and more like a cultural detonation. I was 10 when it was released, and even then I remember the chaos—banned posters, outraged headlines, parents clutching pearls. The Sex Pistols weren’t just a band; they were a marketing experiment in weaponizing rebellion. The music itself? Loud, brash, and deliberately crude. It’s punk boiled down to sneer and spit. Looking back, it’s hard not to see it as style over substance. The shock tactics, the slogans, the sneering interviews—they were engineered to provoke, and they succeeded. But beneath the noise, the songs blur together, more attitude than artistry. It’s iconic, sure, but mostly for what it represented rather than what it delivered musically.
No complaints, but pretty barebones for my millennial musical taste
Deserve their place in history and to some extent in time. I think for the genre they hit the right notes and for that they have mastery especially how they came about it. Where maybe they lose out Vs modern iterations is the musicality. I like the raw striped back vibe as it suits the material but they don't shine here and maybe not the point. On point for genre topping vocal spirit 4. For me however 3.
Välillä ihme huutamista josta ei saa selvää. Esimerkiksi yhdessä biisissä luulin koko ajan että siinä lauletaan Lava lamp eikä problem..? Taustoista kuitenkin tykkään, hyvät rummut ja kitara!
I do like the Pistols.. but just not as much as I thought I did. Obviously I like the classics but I just got bored and grated by it by the end.
Rock básico. Bom para estudar, mas nada surpreendente. Escultei todo porque é rock
I can see why this was huge. If the world was yearning for punk, this is as core and high quality as punk gets. I'm working through a weird relationship with punk throughout this list, it really flirts with anarchical singing and that bothers me. Otherwise, I love the lyrics, song structure, and instrumentation. Songs don't need to be complicated to be good... but it's hard to hit an emotional tone when you're not singing. Reluctantly 3 stars but glad I listened to this. - Sex Pistols here we come! Big expectations. If they are what people say, this will rate well. Let's just hope the singer sucks - Tough start. Hate the singer. Somehow warming up to him though - If this is the sound throughout it's gonna be tough to get through. More polished than other punk, but more grating as well - Yeahhh idk. I guess I like punk instrumentals and lyricism, but how hard is it to sing a melody? The Go-Gos nailed it, and I've been chasing that ever since. - Verdict: It's great punk, but half-singing is not my vibe. Seems like that's a core feature of punk so I can't say I like traditional punk...
Normally punk rock isn't my genre, especially if its British, but this one was fairly good musically.
It is alright. I always thought the se pistols were overrated and manufactured. I honestly don't see myself listening to it again
It was okay. A bit repetitive I think. Of course very influential but not necessarily awesome.
alright
Fun songs, but what the fuck was he saying?
Juu, klassikko, mutta ei nyt oikein iskenyt. 2.5/5.
It's overrated, simplistic and repetitive, but you can't deny that it had a huge hand in making punk rock mainstream. It has huge energy and is intentionally antagonistic, which seemed less juvenile when I was one.
This made me realise that I've never sat down and listened to a Sex Pistols album. The first song kind of slaps, I'm (for some reason) surprised by this. I think I just plain like this album
Done.
Actually didnt mind this one- typically not a huge punk person but the songs remained in the "catchy" realm while still being full of grunginess and grit. Overall- decent album
I've never much been impressed by commercial punk music. There's some fun songs on this tho
Rowdy and fun but not something I'd come back to.
Better than I remember. I remember listening to this in my brother’s room when I must have been 10 or so and I really didn’t like it and all I understood was that this was a supposedly important album. All these years later and I guess an evolution is personal taste, and now I like it.
Jumpin' Bit sunshiny for my taste, but Anarchy in the UK is fun as shit.
PUUUUUUNK
Ah the sex pistols. Angst at its best. Good album but not my style.
Classic punk album. As someone who isn’t really a punk fan this is still fun to listen to.
Good 3.5
This album is fine. It’s got its place in history but it’s like a lot of other influential albums - just not as good as what comes after.
2.5
Fast!
Despite what some say the Sex Pistols are nowhere near the best British punk band. This, there only studio album, is full of anger and rebellion, but light on anything else. Maybe if they had survived they would have evolved. Best tracks are the singles. Noteably "Holidays in the sun" and "God save the Queen" .
Instrumentals were good but not a fan of the guys voice
Un peu trop punk pour moi mais ça s'écoute
bueno pero no es mi estilo
Kul att ha lyssnat på hela då det är en klassiker men inte riktigt min grej, förstår dock verkligen ”charmen”
Album was just okay. Felt like 90s British rock. 5.1/10
Had not heard the album, better than expected
I should like the Sex Pistols. I like a lot of punk, rock, punk/rock type stuff. And I think this album deserves a spot on this list as they influenced a ton of others. But if I had to rate this one it would be a 5 for deserving but a 2 for how I liked it. So I guess middle of the road 3?
Buen álbum, uno de los revoluciónarios en él phunk, tiene un sonido atrevido, muy rockero y crudo qué pega a la perfección. Es él único álbum de los sex pistols y es bueno y legendario, le doy un 8.3.
Roim8
It was quite good. All things considered
Yaarrghhh
Music for people that think Anarchy means burning down buildings and throwing bricks at windows. A culturally and historically relevant album that was originally designed to sell a specific look and narrative that took root. You can draw a straight line from this album to the rich kid wearing crust pants at the local show, asking to bum a beer off you because "his parents cut him off" (no they didn't, he already spent his allowance on blow). This is a simulacrum of actual punk music. Go listen to Death, they were doing it better and earlier. They just didn't have a marketing manager.
I know this is regarded as one of the greatest punk rock albums of all time. This was the first time I've ever listened all the way through and was a little underwhelmed.
Other than “God Save the Queen” & “Anarchy in the U.K.” I’ve never heard any of the other songs or had a desire to. I know this album ranks highly for so many people, but it was okay.
Punk, but they can actuuplay, otherwise boring
Music to get your knickers in a twist.
some great moments here i would actually give it a 3.5
Conflicted about this record. On one hand, it's fairly 'orrible. Deliberately objectionable and 'coorse', as my mother would have said. On the other hand (and with the benefit of hindsight), it's surprisingly tuneful in places, and is a big part of the rocket the British establishment needed at the time (and still does tbf). Deserving of its place on this list? Yeah, 100%. Likeable? Not so much.
So fun, so raw, so awesome.
No nämähän on ihan popbiisejä. Eli puree. Mainstreamiinkin. Kiistatta siis tärkeä levy.
It's Sex Pistols
undoubtedly influential but johnny rotten's nauseatingly english voice is like nails on a chalkboard, although it's fun imagining how much better the band could have been if malcolm mclaren hadn't bonked his head really hard the day he decided to recruit johnny
Nice but to repetitive and nothing special
I hadn't heard this album since I was about 15, when this band stopped being interesting. This was a very long time ago. I was more into The Exploited anyway. I understand its significance, however it's basically just one very long (too long) song. It's okay in small doses.
Better than I expected it to be. No Feelings is pretty good (obviously would be improved by better singing or...actual singing...but I know that's not in the spirit of the thing). Good guitar on God Save The Queen. Same on Problems which is also pretty good.
influential but doesn't stand up the best on its own
Tres anglais finalement
This is a guilty pleasure for me. I became a punk fan after the heyday of punk had passed but still enjoy the raw energy and emotion of it and this album epitomizes that.
Look, I get it. It's influential, its important to hear. I'm just not that kind of punk kid anymore, and that's ok
Meh. 3/5
I feel like this is the most overrated punk album of all time. I will die on that hill.
God Save the Queen! We mean it maaaan!! I have this album on tape cassette so we go way back. I still love their energy and their style of punk. But 30 years later I don't like this quite as much as I did as a teenager. My 51 year old self tends to prefer songs that are layered with fabulous playing and interesting songwriting changes with poetic lyrics. I don't really get this from the Sex Pistols. With 3 songs left I was really ready for this album to be over. Holidays in the Sun, God Save the Queen, and Anarchy in the U.K. are all kind of similar and are the "hits". But I especially like Problems and Sub-Mission because they have a little different groove.
I appreciate how rockin’ this is, but there aren’t songs on here I’d care if I ever heard again. Just not my thang.
Punk as it should be done. Very gritty and visceral. The kind of shit you can feel in your bones.
Clásico,pero no es mi estilo
Total wankers. eh ok but actually it's still kinda catchy... but only: a) for about 1 minute per song and b) 10 minutes in total. To paraphrase something I admittedly think is a lazy comment: each song really does sound pretty much the same. Not good musicians, mediocre songs, fun in the shortest of bursts. Yeah yeah pioneers (of marketing more than anything) - agreed that everyone should hear it once but that's probably enough for most. Gimme 3 tracks max and I'm good. 5/10 3 stars.
point4.
This type of punk/rock just isn’t my favorite thing in the world, still a solid album.
Picante, sucio, auténtico. Dicho ésto, no puedo hacer mucho con un género que aborrezco. Nota: 3.5
It’s whatever. I think it’s overrated even in context.
I feel like most people know what they're in for here. It's alright. A little rough, but there's a black humor to it that makes it pretty tolerable.
A bit much, all very similar
One of the OG punk albums and it’s quite good, has 2 of the most quintessential punk songs of all time with anarchy and good save the queen, the other songs are also very fun, production definitely suits the songs making this a very fun listening experience.
I've tried to like this one before. Famous cover, influential, rage, cutting edge for the time. It was a kick in the teeth to parents everywhere in 1977 and it's still getting some airplay. "Holidays In the Sun", "God Save The Queen" & "Anarchy In the UK" are the popular tracks that most people would be familiar with. Some good stuff, raw and in your face, punk rock. 10 yrs later, even when I was 15, this was too much for me to fully appreciate. I still have difficulty listening to most of the tracks, Rotten's voice is an acquired taste and rubs a nerve after awhile. 3 stars for influence, staying power & revolutionizing a sound that still has roots today.
i understand why this was a big deal in '77, but it's a pretty annoying listen
it's solid poser punk. 7/10
Good live album I just don’t know their music enough to care
experimental and quite energetic but mostly because of historical context of the band. can be listened, probably should be respected but not sincerely loved
so this is how i find out that the Sex Pistols is actually formed of absolute trash, wife killers, trumpies, pro-brexit, fucking nazis........ cool i'd wanted to get into this album for years now, because as everybody else i'd heard their major commercial successes, thinking i was going to resonate with the overall message of the album but i'm not sure how i'm supposed to do that anymore. i mean it's still an album that sounds greats, but there's just no point in listening to it anymore unfortunately
An undeniably influential album of energetic and youthful punk. It is very fun until it starts to get repetitive, specially toward the last songs, which I feel they don't add anything to the experience and just makes the album feel a bit more tiresome. If I liked more the first half, which is the strongest part, I would consider to give this record 4 stars, but because of the points made before, I'll give it 3 stars.
I’ve heard worse and they were certainly influential so 3. For you young ones, if you’re wondering what all the hype was about, you had to be there. They were a lovely antidote to Abba and glam rock, if nothing else
Something weirdly nostalgic listening to it, It definitely captures this era in British culture. It grew on me. Felt a bit too polished for punk.
Not as bad as I imagined it would be... truthfully my impression of this is that they were always severely overrated with no longevity (basically a flash in the pan), but after listening to this I can see why it's so influential. Nothing sounded like this in 1977. Negatives: Johnny Rotten's vocals are terrible (on purpose, I know...), the songs are longer than I expected (several overstayed their welcome) and I feel there is a lack of memorable, catchy songs. The energy is definitely there, though. 3 stars because of it being the blueprint, but I don't think I'll come back to it.
Actually better that I had expected. 7/10
The is band is on the THPS Mount Rushmore. IYKYK. Favorite Track: Anarchy in U.K.
Back then, almost 50 years ago, I can imagine that punk rock seemed aggressive. I also associate it with my own youth and the punk freaks in the pedestrian zones of big cities. It was impressive for me as a teenager, and also intimidating in a way. I couldn't relate to it at all...both the music and the behavior. Today, punk music has evolved, and I now find it completely listenable. And so I can say that, unlike before, I like the album a lot. It's not exactly in your face anymore.
energetic and true
I would give this like a 3.8. I really liked it, and it spoke to the angst I have regarding the current political climate. I just didn’t quite like it enough to hit 4 stars.
Ah. The Sex Pistols. My first ever punk band...and they were quickly replaced as my favourites by significantly better bands like The Clash and The Dead Kennedys. Still, this is a fantastic album. The lyrics are nonsense politically or punk-wise; they're edgy, but the vocals and irreverant nature of them still works. It doesn't really align anywhere with 'punk' aside from superficiality, but, it's functional. Bodies is despite the fact that it's an anecdote, still a very anti-abortion song– which is a complex issue, but having these dolts tackle it certainly isn't how you present it. But despite that, man if the songs aren't still good. They're really, really good punk songs, even if the lyrics aren't up to shape. It really does define punk in some ways. Despite that, I can't imagine giving it anything higher than a 4/5. Edited on 17 June. 3/5
Decent punk album, feels a bit too clean though doesn't it? Punk should never feel polished.
Ikkje favorittalbumet mitt, men gøy ein sjelden gang
An iconic punk record with some really good songs, although from start to end it's not the strongest. 6/10
I guess I got used to heavier sounds, I like it much more now than I used to
