Reviews (page 10 of 13)
As loud and boisterous as ever.
When this landed, I couldn't be bothered. The concept of music made with the express intent not trying to be "good" musically was anathema. And having heard a couple of tracks, I basically felt like I had heard what I needed to. And guess what... that's true. After three songs, what more is there? As a social statement, as an institution, I'm on board. They certainly made their mark. And God damn, the letter they wrote to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when they were being inducted is enough to cement the band in infamy, where they belong. (And yes, the HOF is a piss stain, Mr.Rotten. Well said.) But good lord, do people really set the proverbial needle on this record and listen through all the tracks for enjoyment? https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/sex-pistols-johnny-rotten-handwritten-letter-rock-hall/ P.S. The fact that Alexa won't say "bollocks" is another gold star for the band. But not in my review...
I don't know how to rate this thing. I've always felt this record was overrated, though the bangers still bang. But punk was always more of a singles genre than an album one. Johnny Rotten is a hell of a front man. His sneering, snarling, anti-singing still sounds dangerous and thrilling—more so than the band, I would argue. At the same time, though, I kind of wanted him to shut up after a few songs. He has one gear and it gets a little old. Also, today was the first time i ever listened to the lyrics for "Bodies," which still have the power to shock. So I guess that's something. Also, I didn't care for New York with his frequent use of "the other F word." But Pretty Vacant, Anarchy, and God Save the Queen are still pretty ferocious. i know it influenced a billion bands, but this is my "how much do i want to listen to this album" rating.
Great album from my childhood. I miss it. Not as good as I remember but still fun
I guess this is a hard album title to live up to but there was more bollocks on this than I was expecting. Favourite track: Pretty Vacant.
It just isn't as cool or shocking as it once was. To me, the Sex Pistols seem like any other punk band from the late 70s. "God Save the Queen" is a banger along with a few other tracks. NMtBHtSP has tracks that sound often sound indistinguishable to each other. However, punk and most of its sub-genres wouldn't exist without the Sex Pistols. 3 stars for revolutionising music and paving the way for music artists I love, also for being quite good.
ehhh
Puck sucks but I guess I’ll give it to the godfathers
Not really a fan of UK punk; prefer stuff like NOFX. Nevertheless, I can appreciate The Sex Pistol's place in history. Favourite tracks: Holidays In The Sun, God Save The Queen, Pretty Vacant, EMI.
Fun, influential album. Some of the songs are a bit samey, and the musicianship leaves something to be desired, but this album is the blueprint for generations of punk rockers thereafter.
Most albums start off great and start to slowest go down, this one is the other way around. The beginning of the album is okay, but after it gets better and better. Starting to like the sex pistols more and more. Favourite songs: - God save the queen - Anarchy in the UK - EMI
Holidays in the Sun - 4 Bodies - 3.5 No Feelings - 3.5 Liar - 2.5 Problems - 3 God Save the Queen - 4 Seventeen - 3.5 Anarchy in the UK - 4.5 Sub-mission - 3 Pretty Vacant -4 New York - 3 EMI - 3.5 Average - 3.5 One of the best/most iconic Punk albums ever
i actually love the sound of them but i hate the sex pistols which is why this is a 3/5
fun album to listen to
Good classic punk album. I love how the Sex Pistols hate everyone equally, including themselves. 3 stars
My least favourite era of punk, surprisingly, bit it's not terrible
Awesome. My only qualm is how similar each song sounds upon first listen— but I listened a second time and it made it easier to appreciate each song for what it is. I knew about Sid and Nancy but I had never really listened to Sex Pistols—this was great and exactly what I expected! But I might prefer The Clash when it comes to 70s punk? Don’t quote me on that. 3.8
Whiny and crass but in a good way! Definitely more of a Clash fan myself but it was cool to listen to a different early interpretation of punk. This album would rate higher for me if it was a little less samey.
I get it, but damn
It's not my style, but respect!
I'm more of a Stooges man but por que no los dos? This album, despite it's loaded history and holes to poke at it's "punk authenticity" is still a pretty fun ride. They owe the album's success to the very "unpunk" OG bassist Glen Matlock who loved a diverse array of music, including the Beatles. The other secret ingredient was guitarist Steve Jones, who played bass on most of this album after Matlock quit, as low-end replacement Sid Vicious could barely play the instrument he was hired to play. If you want authenticity, look to the Stooges, look to the Clash, but some people involved in this album clearly understood the assignment and made sure this created a crater that made ripple effects for decades to come. Compliments to the chef on that note, at least.
Oh boy here I go getting radicalised again. I was ready for this to be a 5/5 but sadly not, my love for a few tracks did a lot of heavy lifting for the rest of the album. A lot of the songs sounded very similar, and I get that the lyricism is meant to be incredible but that only works if I can understand what the lyrics are. 3/5. All crimes are paid, including insane vocal performances.
Very edgy, I liked it when I was 15.
Sure it’s important, without the Sex Pistols we wouldn’t have many other, and better bands. It’s certainly not bad, and my guess is at the time of release it felt very provocative, but it was almost immediately usurped by much better, real punk bands. And nowadays it’s impossible to listen to without hearing the racist comments John Lydon made just last week, and in previous years.
I’ve tried in the past, and I tried again today. I just can’t get into it.
Just noisy
Great soundtrack for mallrat anarchism but the anarchist died and the arrogant douche survived and the inspiration ran dry
Listened to this album while doing some indoor rowing. Helped me set a great time. Classis.
Not bad, not amazing.
I get that it’s important. It must have been a welcome punch in the face for the British youth of 1977. It hit a lot of points in time that worked for it then , I’m not sure that it still works quite the same today. It doesn’t have any real pull over me, I think that’s what I’m trying to say.
Revolutionary at the time I'm sure, but just sound like the same mediocre song over and over.
Great punx riffs but doesn’t really hold up well today.
I’m a product of my time, and the subversive nature of punk rock is lost on me. Sadly, it all ends up sounding the same. Something for me to work on, but in the meantime I probably won’t be seeking out this album for additional listens
Gotta be in the right mood to listen to this, but it works if you are.
Not as good as I remembered it being, but not the worst.
It was okay. Wasn't a terrible album. Anarchy in the UK definitely saved it. Didnt hate it as much as i did when i first heard it
Listening to this album finally helped me realize that I'm not really that much of a fan of punk--I mean, if I can't love *this* album, then there's not much hope for me, sadly. (Further irony is that this is a much more produced and mastered album than most punk albums (and I guess their only studio album), and yet they also did a fantastic job sounding like these were near-live one-take cuts.) Reading the Wikipedia entry for this album is a fun experience; I'm sure there are even longer and more minutely detailed entries on the site, but I feel like the "Bollocks" entry is what Wikipedia was made for. I particularly liked the anecdotes about Sid Vicious' and Johnny Rotten's interactions with Queen in the studio, and I was (perhaps foolishly) surprised to learn that Sid Vicious was an atrocious bass player. Regardless of my own personal reaction to it, it's pretty undeniable that this album was an instant and massive touchstone for music fans and bands alike.
I thought I was going to hate this album and it didn't meet expectations.
I ate shit and fell on some rocks after started listening so my vibes were off and every song kinda annoyed me cause I was feeling massive pain. I need to relisten when I'm in better spirits
Reminded me of tony hawk pro skater. Big fan of anarchy in the uk and first band I think of when I hear the genre punk.
Not my style, but I appreciate the art.
I respect what they did but rotten’s voice annoys me.
3/5. Would've been 2/5 but Anarchy saved it.
Submission was a good song, album not my style but was ok
3.7
i think theres better punk albums out there. i think on a surface level if you only interacted with a few of their songs you could read their lyircs and think "wow theyre maybe saying something here!" but any further analysis/introspection into what theyre actually saying and their other public stunts and performances you realize this is a band full of dudes who are anti-establishment just to be anti-establishment. there are solid tracks on this album! bodies, god save the queen, holidays in the sun, and emi are lyrically probably the strongest and makes this ranking not as low as it could despite me really not wanting to rate things as 3 star bc i feel like thats the same as answering "sometimes" on a behavioural survey. faves: bodies, god save the queen, holidays in the sun.
It really could have been such a solid punk album! They sound pretty good, some of the songs even venture into having good lyrics, but my god these dudes do not have a single interesting opinion or thought to share. The Sex Pistols are the best example of people who loudly talk about hating authority without a single real thought behind that vocal hatred. Bodies is interesting but sounds wildly conservative in my own personal interpretation (but at least it's saying SOMETHING). Holidays in the Sun, God Save the Queen, EMI, and a few others are good songs. I could easily have given this 4 stars instead of 3. But at a certain point it's like... if the only thing differentiating you from Kiss singing Rock and Roll All Nite is that you indulge in a different form of theatricality while singing essentially the same "authority SUCKS my band RULES" sort of thing then.. idk! Time to go listen to the Clash for a few hours.
An energetic and raw album that was fun to listen to. I don't know a lot about the history of punk rock but it's easy to recognize that this was a very influential and culturally significant album. I could definitely see myself revisiting this album because I enjoyed pretty much every song and there were some true bangers on there as well.
this is a decent 70s british punk album, but knowing that the clash are about to put out london calling in a few years, this looks pretty meh in comparison. there are a few solid tracks here but a ton of filler. also johnny rotten is a complicated person with some views i agree with and several prominent ones i do not. favorites: holidays in the sun, god save the queen, anarchy in the UK, pretty vacant
Solid album, close to a 4 but not quite enough.
Hurtigt lyttet igennem, føles dog stadig lidt for lang. Måske 3 - 5 minutter kortere. 🤷
This album felt like an Anarchy In the U.K. Not sure I felt like how I feel when I have Holidays In the Sun, though.
So much better than Public Image, I mean seriously it's night and day. I still am not over the moon about it, I'm gonna give it a 3 but that's just cause I don't love Lydon's voice and the lyrics get real repetitive in a lot of the songs. Otherwise I thought it was a solid album, this is the first one to sound like what punk would become, at least more so than The Clash. I also didn't realize this was their only album, pretty alright job for just a one and done.
- "God Save The Queen" und "Anarchy in the UK" sind natürlich absolute Punk-Classics.
3/5
Loved this as a kid, the first punk album i ever listened to. Punk Legitimacy aside, its an ok record. I get why i loved it as a kid but it feels slightly amateurish in its anger, especially when compared to albums like black flags damaged
HL: “Holidays in the Sun”, “God Save the Queen”, “Anarchy in the U.K.” A cause of a lot of better bands than the Sex Pistols, and a lot of worse ones, too January 25, 2024
Not sure why I didn’t listen to this back in the day. I think if it were etched into my 20 something brain I’d score it higher. As it is, I give it a 3.5 rounded down to 3.
Solid classic punk album, couple of great songs, some filler.
Love that Alexa bleeps “bollocks”. Great fun album - not necessarily the best breakfast fare :)
Definitely a lot of energy and overall a vastly important album, but not my bread and butter. I liked it enough but wasn't one of my favorites.
Rrrrright!
It still hits what can I say
Definitiv damals ein innovatives Album.
Terrible musicians if you can call them that but extra star for the anarchy
Gran tema God Save the Queen
Recognized Where is my mind, good song. Overall not bad, but not something I would listen to often.
it's a historic punk album, but I don't think it's extraordinary.
good classic rock, british invasion. 3
Iconic and certainly a couple of tunes on it but punk overall is overrated so shut up.
Quintessential SP sound. Abrasive, political, punk.
Great rock and roll and I like the song abt the queen. But I mostly glossed over this album. I can rock to it but nothing worked me up.
Lifi pönkið! Bara ekki of mikið af því í einu.
Straight ahead punky garage grunge, not much variation in tone or timbre, lead vocals in your face, sounds like teen spirit.
Johnny Rottens vocals are not for me. I can appreciate the influence they had on punk.
3 Stars (8/15)
sounded very loud!
3.3 stars rounded down. Better as an influence. "Holidays in the Sun", "God Save the Queen", "Anarchy in the UK", and "Pretty Vacant" are best tracks and mostly the singles of the band's only real album.
Yeah not too bad. Some good ol fashion punk.
like 2 songs that kinda bang. Dogwater instrumentals tho
This would’ve gotten me torqued if I was a British teen in the 70’s. Not just the messages but the playing is really tight and it has a huge, booming sound for its time
Enjoyed this after all these years (used to have a cassette of it in the 80s). Some good tracks I'd forgotten - Problems, No Future. Obviously lacks the shock factor these days and if anything it made me smile fondly, which I'm sure isn't what they were going for!
A much-needed ear cleanse after two days of country lovelorn angst which I guess in some small way replicates what this album would have sounded like at the time. Ripping everything up and starting again. All these years later, it sounds like straightforward noisy rock n roll to me. Not so shocking any more. Fave track - Pretty Vacant
Das war das erste vorgeschlagene Album am 27.12.2023
God save the queen, anarchy in the uk
Classic
It still sounds angry but less dangerous
Must have been so hard-hitting when it came out!
Enjoyable listen
Pure anarchy. Fave: Submission.
OG Punk.
Obviously critically important, but some lyrics have not stood the test of time.
Anarchy for the U.K.! Not bad, but the songs are all a bit too similar for my liking.
Pure punk. But I need something more for punk to become great. Nontheless it's good punk.
With the history of the Sex Pistols being what it is, the music feels like a secondary reason for their fame. I was familiar with a few songs, and did not expect there to be any hidden gems. I was right. The singles are actually kind of good, but I don’t need a full album of this music. 2.6
Classic album
thought and wish I'd like this more than I did... good but not special, not coming back to it
Decent Punk Rock
Very British. This the type of music to play in a racing game or a "punk" aesthetic video game. Not gonna lie, these all sound the same
I feel a mix of excitement over the energy trapped within this record and annoyance that all the songs sound so similar to one another. I was pretty into the first half but then lost interest, except when the great “Anarchy in the UK” played, of course.
Probably the inspiration for most of the punk I listen to today, but not my cup of tea. The vocal is exhausting to listen to.
All the songs are very samey, it's fine I guess. Would not go out of my way to listen again.
As far as the now-mainstream understanding of punk's birth, this is certainly a fine album. Scratch the surface of the genre even a little, though, and you'll find that this is far from emblematic of the genre so many choose it to represent. There's a mix of good songs and poor, the second half mostly holding things up in that department, with the first half ending on the creatively bereft "Problem" before going right into the second half with strong efforts such as "Seventeen" and "Anarchy in the UK", and ending out on the band's best songwriting effort in "EMI". Lyrically there isn't anything special going on but that's to be expected, musically it's not exactly a shining example of variety. As far as the genre goes, even with just punk rock, there are many notably better efforts, and if you include all the offshoots of punk there are innumerable examples. That said, it's still a decent burst of energy and a piece of punk history, even if occasionally wrongly held up as a beacon of the genre. Punk didn't start with these kinds of bands, and definitely didn't peak with them.
I can see the influence it had on punk and rock but it is not for me 6.5/10
Sex Pistols have the energy, passion and angry you want from a great punk band but lack almost any melody. It’s there in a few songs, Liars, Problems and obviously Anarchy in the Uk but overall the lack of melody leads to the songs blending together 6.2/10
The title of this album is quite ironic and due to the fact that there is a lot of bullocks surrounding this album. "This band has no talent, this band is contrived, this band is all hype." Fine, this is a 70s boy band, constructed and imaged. And sure, sid vicious and Jonny rotten are no Simon and Garfunkel, but never mind that, here are the sex pistols
Insanely British.
There is probably no community in music that is more divisive and intense towards each other and towards outsiders than the punk scene. Punk is built on anger and rage. And as far as I know, for real true punk rock heads, Sex Pistols aren't the most popular group. They kind of went against the antithesis of punk rock, and everything those people fought for. They were "too poppy", "too mainstream", and "not independent enough". They weren't sticking it to the higher-ups as much as they should. People get really passionate about how much they dislike this band. Now me personally? I could care less. I like music for the music part. None of that discourse has anything to do with me, so I will just observe the band as they were. They sound pretty cool. Is the music here maybe leaning more towards glam than punk? Yeah, but I don't think it is that big of a deal. Johnny Rotten is absolutely wailing on every song. And the other members are constantly firing on all cylinders. There is still the rebelliousness, and the spite, and the yelling. It just wasn't done in the way some people wanted it to be. I won't lie though, I got a little tired of this by the end. The songs are mostly short in length, and the album isn't too long either, but something about 12 tracks of little variation became grating. I just needed some mix-up to keep things interesting. They chose not to do that, so I lost interest. I got sick of hearing Johnny howling on every song in his grimy London accent. But make no mistake, this is still a solid punk rock record. I wouldn't consider it the peak by any means. There are definitely better albums. This just launched punk into the mainstream, more than anything before it. And remember, that's a bad thing. Rating: 6/10
It's held up better than I thought it would. Fun, but maybe a bit one-dimensional.
There's no denying the impact of this album and this band - from the thousands of people that heard this record and formed bands and even bands like Joy Division that actually started due to members meeting at Sex Pistols shows. I've never been a real fan of punk music, mostly staying with the second wave, the influences, and only occasionally dipping my foot in. I also think, at this time, there are so many other albums so much better. However, I get why someone would say, "you need to listen to this particular punk album that really pushed this type of music into the popular culture."
Good background music and the influence can't be denied
I listened to this a few times when I was in my early 20s, but could never feel it grow into me (I prefered more the Clash, London calling). I like the hymn "God save the queen", and many tunes are classics. 3.5-
Was a lot more wild than my normal choices lol.
Busy weekend leading to an epigrammatic review. Holidays, God, Anarchy, Pretty and EMI are bangers, one or two of the others not far behind. The brutally cynical tone might be the barrier to my enjoying this record, of which I’ve had a copy for most of my adulthood. The record comes from a place of hurt, most obviously in Lydon’s delivery. I think he’s brilliant, but I cannot enjoy this, not now, as his words are bleakly hopeless This is a studio artifact: it’s rawness is produced, multitracked, muscular and extremely clear. Lydia Lunch dismissed the Sex Pistols as speeded up Chuck Berry, which is correct while slighting both parties. Steve Jones’s exuberant guitar playing (bass as well as lead) is Hogarthian.
Awesome soundtrack to play poolside
Müsst ihr wissen
Of a time
Very different from the 70's rock I am more familiar with. The album sounds like it could have been released in the 90's. Good songs on the album but not quite my taste.
Still not me
Bit dated innit. Anarchy is timeless tho (2.5/5)
Great album. Great feel. Would listen to again if I’m on drugs
Original Punk
Pretty good
As far as punk albums good it’s decent. Not the most listenable but suits a certain mood. Wouldn’t attract much attention if it wasn’t such an early punk effort
Overrated
meh
Not my jam, but great energy
I listened to this once, years ago. I remember liking it more. It's energetic, it's noisy, it's got dumb lyrics about anarchy.
Classic.
Punky
Sadly not my favorite
3*
More dimensions than I thought bit still too repetitive to enjoy as a whole album
Wow! What an album to start with. Full of riotous energy and Lydon's snarling lyrics. Got to listen to this at 8 in the morning whilst running my 7 year old child to school. By track 3 he's rocking in the back, a mixture of punk and his autism. I can imagine a few punks back in 77 sitting in a dingy flat and someone puts this on to play. The wild youthful energy but... this album isn't for vinyl or for listening to in a dingy flat. This is an album to blast out of your windows whilst negotiating the terrible morning traffic on the route to school.
As far as punk goes, I think this is how I like my punk. It has an obvious attitude and feels rebellious in nature, but it's not incoherent. The even less incoherent, even less produced punk is still valid punk, obviously, it's just not for me. I would use the word "energy" to define this album. Each track has a lot of energy and aggressive emotion behind it. I obviously don't need to state how influential this album was. It's wild to think about the level of influence one band with one album had on developing and furthering an entire movement. And unlike other bands that "started" a movement but weren't that great at it, Sex Pistols actually hold up from a punk perspective. It would have been nice to see where they went over the years and how they influenced music further.
Couple of good songs, nice and lively throughout
Bollocks!
3.5! Tuntui todella väärältä kuunnella juuri tätä levyä nimenomaan YouTubesta. Not punk at all.
Old school feel good punk rock. Not as good as The Clash, but still a good time.
aguanten los ramones
Iconic and impactful but it’s not my cup of tea
I dug this punk album! And we got a classic guitar hero song on here. Boy I bet the queen was furious when this came out.
Here's a very famous album. This pricks surely angered a lot of posh Brits with their "God Save the Queen" rubbish. Truthfully, I know they're influential and important, but I didn't love this as much as I thought I would. A couple of standouts, but on the whole it was just alright. We've had better punk stuff. Favorite tracks: Anarchy in the UK (great Guitar Hero jam), Submission, No Feelings. Album art: Definitely iconic, one of the greats. Excellent choice of colors and slap-dash stencil font, reminds me of a ransom letter. 3/5
loud, rowdy, one-dimensional, yet foundational punk rock
Average punk. Maybe it was revolutionary at the time, but would you rather have an iPhone 3 or an iPhone 13?
It's an iconic album, must be one of the contenders to most popular album tshirt ever. It has some great tracks but as an album it gets a bit boring. I'm not sure when I would listen to it, if i feel like some angry music there are other albums for me at least to listen to. Still, "God Save the Queen" and "Anarchy in the UK" are great tracks worthy to be on this list.
Historically fascinating but Punk is not my thing
already listened to it. pretty good
Lo recordaba mejor, also, fuck john lyndon
I saw The Sex Pistols described as a punk band that is also a boy band and I couldn't unhear it the whole album. 3/5
Album really picks up toward the second half. Definitely would’ve been a bolt of lightning back in 1977, but it’s just good punk to my 2023 ears.
God save the queen is een banger. Niet helemaal mijn muziek maar wel vet
I can't shake the feeling that the Sex Pistols were actually kinda just obnoxious bores. Alright music though.
The Sex Pistols would've absolutely owned shitposting Twitter. It's hard to separate this album from what we know about the band and the time they emerged in. It's soaked with meaning beyond anything the band ever intended.
I always thought I liked the Ramones more, but it turns out I never really listened to the Sex Pistols. Holy shit, they knocked punk out of the park on the first swing. Thought about giving it 4 stars for the guitar work alone. Settled on 3 stars because it drags on the second half, and some of the attitude didn't age well. Still, these guys laid a great foundation for others to build on, and it's still great to listen to today. But yeah, turns out I still like the Ramones more.
Album Notes: - Holidays In The Sun slaps i like the bri'ish accents and noisy guitars and also the wacky mix that kinda sucks but also goes hard - These bois really know how to play 4 chords - kinda sounds like a stereotype of punk music but it also invented that stereotype so i guess that can be kinda forgiven - next several songs are fine but kinda forgettable and also kinda sound the same - God Save The Queen has some nice riffage but yeah idk it feels like surface level commentary on the whole subject but it still kinda goes hard - Anarchy In The UK is the best representation of their sound working well and it wouldve been nice to hear more of this -Pretty Vacant is decent but yeah the album is just kinda okay and very repetitive and not too engaging beyond a couple highlights
at this point in music history bands that were influenced by sex pistols just grew into something so much bigger than the band at root, i can't really think of nevermind the bollocks as like, an album people casually listen to.. the mythology surrounding the album and the band ultimately pushed the music itself to the background imo. it's alright, but musically it's not super exciting, at least in 2023 when so many of it's derivative works built around it something more interesting for me personally
I liked the lyrics and instrumentals a lot, I couldn’t quite get on board with Johnny Rotten’s voice but it did grow on me a bit by the end
I liked this at first but found it grating after a while. Don't expect to revisit this album often.
Fine
Can appreciate what the album was for it's time. Simple cord progressions. Don't care too much for the vocal style. Decent overall sound.
Definitely a decent punk record. Great guitar riffs along with punchy tunes. Still don’t see why it is so highly regarded, but I still liked it a good amount.
Partial to punk.
I thought some of the songs were good and I could easily listen to them in the background for certain activities or while driving. Overall genre of the album isn’t my vibe, but it was nice to explore some songs that I could get behind.
Älä välitä The Bollocksista, tässä on Sex Pistolsin Sex Pistols heh...
They put punk on the map overnight, so they definitely belong on the list. That being said, I like a lot of the bands they influenced better. Favorite song: Pretty Vacant.
first listen now this is punk
While the songs are fast, frenetic, and full of British punk swagger, I felt the album overstayed it's welcome a bit given how repetitive it was. Disappointed to have learned this was all a focus group boy band, soured me on the band the day I found that out.
Definitely a more musical album than I was expecting. The punkish yelling didn't bother me at all
Not bad, not my taste
It's no wonder this is one of the few punk bands I actually heard of, at the same time I'm not suprised I never went into punk so much because the first couple songs were pretty cool to me but also got tired of it towards the end.
Pretty cool
6/10
J'ai écouté cet album rempli de clébards dégueulasses, et l'ai bien évidemment detesté.
Haven't listened to this in a few years. One of the quintessential blueprints for the pristine punk-rock album. A tight, toned torrent of thrashing cynicism and exuberance. It is joyous, reveling in nasty sneers and perhaps fun in a nihilist manner. Classic for many, but not to me. Still enjoy it.
Not for me personally, but understand the influence.
Like: Huge guitar, tight rhythm section, great vibe Dislike: Vibe is very one-note and gets stale, Johnny Rotten is bad and it ruins the great band sound, album overstays it’s welcome and should’ve been a killer EP Overall, I can see the importance but it isn’t for me
curti, rock legal, animado.
Agressivo.
I liked the anger but the actual music behind the lyrics I found to be pretty boring. Maybe I'm used to this kind of rage in music now because people like the Sex Pistols paved the way after a pretty chill time.
Starts off well but quickly gets a bit tried and tested. I guess that’s punk rock though all over, and this is staple punk rock. Was a lot better than I anticipated given that I’d only ever heard their bigger songs and wasnt really a fan. Cant get away with Lydon’s vocals, and his lyrics are a bit confused at times. One minute ultra conservative, next calling out fascists and leaving London for Berlin. Cant deny the impact this has had though
It's quick and fun, there's some good tracks, the singing is a bit grating so I couldn't have managed much more.
A nice early punk album
Eh, I've never really cared for this. Maybe it would have been amazing in the 70's, but it doesn't do much for me now. feeling a 2.5/5 on this, but I'll bump to 3/5 because I know it's important.
Some days you just want to stick it to the man; and this album is a great candidate to do so. Angry and full of energy. You have to be in the right mood for it. Not one I’d listen through whole again but there’s some crackers in there.
Listens: 3 Enjoyed : Yeah Very clearly a great album but it's not something I would ever go back to. I don't see a circumstance where this sets the necessary vibe for me
Even a couple years ago, I would given this a one start, but I have been on a musically growth journey. Reading the blurb from wikipedia, I am surprised that they only had one album with the amount of influence and recognition they have had. In the end, I dont hate it. But at the same time it was not made for me or the other boring milk toast people like me.
I love Brit pop. You can't really be an anarchist and be an entertainer. I feel like these guys tried too hard.
I was expecting to not like this album at all. Now there are definitely songs on here that are overplayed (Anarchy, God Save the Queen). I was surprised by the production quality as well as the instrumentation. I was expecting lo-fi sounds. Johnny's voice can get old, I didn't mind this one. 3 stars.
Sex Pistols was always a band whose image eclipsed their music. It’s certainly influential and definitely not bad, just disproportionally unremarkable for their larger-than-life reputation. Still, every music lover has to listen to it sometime
Better than expected for a group that famously couldn't play their instruments. Made me think of tony hawks pro skater. Yet another classic album I had never listened to except for the hits. Not sure I would listen to the whole album for fun so 3 stars.
Sounds pretty generic punky. Fun!
Not music I typically listen to but such a good intro into the album! I wish I could listen to the lyrics more closely Kind of sounds like all types of rock from this era. I would like to listen to it with other people or see it in a soundtrack but just sitting around listening to it does not do much for me
good songs but same thing for most
aggressive, but they do rock
Really good classic punk
Meh
Pretty chaotic punk music but influential. Feels like a necessary album for Brit punk but not one that I’d listen to again.
Hard to understand lyrics - don't know enough context to appreciate it for it's cultural impact. Not a huge punk fan.
Sid Vicious’s singing makes me wanna hold my laughter in when I’m listening to this album in public, it’s too ridiculous. But other than that majority of the songs sound the same and blend into together, the only actual standouts to me were Anarchy In The UK and Submission (that one cause of the change of pace which which gave be a good break from all the hectic energy)
3/12, 25%
Wow. Very fuck the government total freedom. Hard for headbanging. The way he rolls his rs is just incredible. Puts the right amount of edge into what he's saying.
I don't like punk but some parts of this album still stood out
Just noise
bien qsy 7/10
First Sex pistols album i'm listening to in full. i think maybe i've heard one song, anarchy in the uk. but idr. straight off the bat, very punk sound. lot of loud guitars, riffs, and shouting. Not a fan ngl. now idk if it was because this was punk and i just wasnt in the mood or if its just not to my taste
I love 70s punk, but I’ve always preferred The Clash and The Ramones. The Sex Pistols just never seemed musically inclined or mature enough to make it worth my while. They’re a band out for the opportunity to shock and offend so their music lacks the substance my ears need. Their notoriety greatly exceeds their “talent”. Just a hot mess dumpster fire of infantile white boy rage. There are valid gripes here, obvious discontentment with the monarchy, I'll give them that. They certainly do embody the spirit of punk. But annoying asshole punks, not cool punks that I can look up to.
70/100: I wanted to like this album more than I ended up actually liking it. I think the Sex Pistols are really cool from a historical, development of punk as a genre standpoint, but unfortunately their music isn't that fun to listen to. The lead singer's voice is pretty annoying and the sound of the guitar is far too distorted into overdrive. It's clear that artists after the Sex Pistols progressed the genre leaps and bounds beyond where they left it, as I really like punk and grunge music now. Respect to the Sex Pistols for their founding role, but I won't listen to them again.
It was what I would expect.
Love me some classic punk rock. I need to be in a certain mood for Sex Pistols though. Always a fun listen for the most part
Peu Importent Les Couilles, Voilà Les Pistolets Sexes
Ok punk album. I understand the importance in punk history that the Sex Pistols, but not my jam.
Wszystko takie samo. Jedna linia melodyczna i jazda 12 utworów.
Another band that I SHOULD have heard more from, but for a variety of reasons, haven't. Man, these are some angry Brits! Angry, but interesting. Good thing they were only a couple of years aways from a Royal wedding to make them forget all of the economic and social malaise of the 1970s! I also think it's cool how Brits can be both more refined AND more vulgar than Americans, who are just kind of floating in the middle somewhere. Either way, punk isn't really my thing, but you have to respect them as pioneers, and for just f-bombing an entire song, and then actually thinking that anarchy might be a good idea. Fight on, lads!
Not really my style, undeniable talent but not to my taste
pretty raw sound, okay to me.
Seminal album for brit punk. But... to be honest it isn't very interesting for my American sensibilities. I just don't think I like the straight-sing-speaking of brit punk. A fun Wikipedia read though.
I don't really like the sex pistols' music, but they did start the punk movement and influenced a bunch of future bands, so I gotta give them props for that
Pretty cool album
Classic, fun album.
I am the antichrist... basically anarchy in the UK is great, the rest is more or less the same.
It was good, nothing jumped out at me. Pretty much what I expected from what I had already heard about them. Generic punk rock music made by posers.
Better than what I remember, but the vocals still grates me. I understand the cultural shock it must have been at the time, but musically speaking I'm more interested in US punk or stuff like Wire and The Clash. But yeah, it sure sounds like a revolution and I respect the album for that.
A pillar in terms of punk music. Not as bad as I remember, glad I'm starting to appreciate it.
3/5
Truly a great album for the start of punk, but it can't entertain me fully. Maybe it is because of the same guitar that is used in al the years before.
Fav song - Liar - Punchy, simple, effective, fun - the best things about this album all in one song Least fav - Seventeen, feels the least polished or compelling of any song on the album
A pretty good Brit punk rock album. Not the most enjoyable sound from the singer but that’s usually how punk is to me. There are a couple of classic songs on this album and the Sex Pistols do rock pretty well. It’s not bad but nothing too favorable to me. 5.9/10
Rock
Definitely some songs on here that didn’t age well
Definitely not a huge fan of this genre, but I can definitely appreciate the impact this album had on music culture. Even though I'm not a fan of the Sex Pistols, I still enjoy listening to Anarchy In The U.K. from time to time so I was able to look forward to that. The rest of the album was fine.
I mean, it was fine for punk rock but I guess I’m not so much a fan of the genre
This album has a lot of baggage for me but here's hoping I have fresh ears to listen. I think the non-singles on this are really solid. I remember Anarchy in The UK being a dogshit song and I wrote off the rest of the album. Three songs in and its pretty solid! Yep, still a piece of shit song. Its a pretty single note album, but its a landmark. I mean its not something I would pick out but its not something I would turn off.
Love that half-growl vocal style, really brings out the emotion in every song. Almost would’ve been better if they toned down the music a bit and just let him yell. I don’t have as much pent up rage so this isn’t really my vibe, but it’s impossible not to see the influence this has had on everything since. Also any chance for me to shoutout Neil Young: “better to burn out than fade away…this is the story of Johnny Rotten” makes a lot more sense now.
So much going on, they shred, roast everything and everyone they don’t like and don’t give a fuck what people think. Pretty bad ass. I’d say my rating is closer to 3.5 but rounding down more for my style/genre preferences
It sounds great. Obvs hugely important. Judging it as an actual record - Most of the album tracks are, well, a bit shit aren't they. 6 great tracks ranging from really good to all time classics, 6 shite tracks. 6.5/10
For its reputation, Bollocks is surprisingly muddy and slow. The gloss is alright; Deeper inspection tends to get boring. I will note that Stealing People's Mail is both more concrete and more interesting than Anarchy.
This was not as terrible as I expected, some songs could be saved if it wasn't for the constant screeching. If you're into energetic screaming with dissonant sounds in the background you'll love this album.
21st July 2022 Listened during the day while working from home, finished the morning after. Had a second interview with the BBC then went to watch Prima Facie in sheepscombe with mum, dad and Patrick. Classic punk, the raw power and energy palpable from start to finish. 3.5 if I could. Shame Lydon has become who he has.
Eh
3-4 great songs, the rest were good. 3.5/5
The cool thing about the Sex Pistols is that everyone has heard of them, but nobody has everyone really listened to them. I find myself wanting to experience this raw, animalistic instinct to love it, but I'm actually just left here with a thumping headache wanking over an episode of Scooby Doo. It's when they unmask the bad guy that is usually the climax point. In many ways it sums up how I feel about sex and pistols and modern life. Why can't it all just be a lot nicer? Why can't we just throw on The Thong Song and just dance our hearts out?
It’s not really my genre. I liked specific parts of it, but when the whole entirety of the song is put together, I don’t like it nearly as much. For instance, the guitar by itself is great, but I don’t like it next to the vocals and lyrics. Still though, it provides a great album to rock out to, and nothing can be said about that feeling. The songs tend to get a bit samey, but it’s a great sound nonetheless. Favorite track: God Save the Queen
Not my thing, but also better and more fun than I was expecting.
Pretty good.
Enjoyed it more than I expected, more musical than expected. Possible gym music in the future.
Better than I remembered, enjoyed this one
Nice
Didn't love it, didn't hate it. There are better punk albums but this one isn't bad
It was fine. It doesn't really change my mind about punk
I enjoyed this, some bits sounded a bit samey but some bits were better than others. At the same time I know that this album definitely inspired some of my favourite music which is huge!!! I probably won't come back to it anytime soon but I still enjoyed! Also I listened to Anarchy in the UK while I was walking home from work and my paper bag containing a big box of donuts split open in the pouring rain...absolute anarchy
Wasn't a fan to begin with, but the album really grew on me as it went on. Not the easiest listen, but some of the songs really pack a punch and it was a fun chaotic album. High 3
The singles are great but I find the rest a bit hit and miss. Very few albums have this intense urgency though, and even though not all of it clicks with me I completely understand why it's as important and influential as it is
Not too bad. Still pretty fresh sounding. Some decent rock and roll going on here
Not bad punk album, I already knew Anarchy in the UK, I enjoyed it
Well, that was a surprise. I didn't think that I would enjoy this album as much as I did. Not anything that I would consider for a daily listen, but it wasn't terribly painful. I also thought that I would tire of the kind of yell-singing, but it did not grate on my nerves...today...
Well, yeah. I guess I expected to see this one. I don't hate it. But I'm glad it's behind us. Next!
I wasn't looking forward to listening to this, even though I know I should experience this classic album. Punk music is something I tend to enjoy in moderation. I can see how this earns its status as a punk classic. The music is good. One of the catchiest tunes musically, “Bodies” was a bit horrific lyrically. Still not sure what to make of that. I’m still not entirely sold on this album as something I need to personally listen to much. But glad to have had this experience listening to a historic recording like this.
Strange record. There's some catchy riffs throughout, and some memorable lines. But for the most part, it kinda sounds like a bunch of 40 year-olds rocking out as opposed to a youthful punk. Maybe within the context of 1977 it had more energy and snarl behind it, but it didn't blow my socks off. Fav tracks: Holiday in the Sun, Sub-mission
No Future for this Sound.
An album of undeniable influence and importance with some extraordinary, visceral tracks - culminating in the highlight ‘Pretty Vacant’ - but listening to so much cynicism at once is wearying and the production is so poor you don’t get to enjoy the individual instruments. This might have been the aesthetic but better someone punk records are available. And there are times when, far from being anarchists, you sense Rotten’s social conservatism coming through on tracks like Bodies. A landmark album to be sure and deserves its place on this list but just not a fully enjoyable album.
Wasn't my thing liked one song
Better than I exp3cted.
I understand why it’s so influential, but some of the songs sounded the same and the first 3 songs blended together and I couldn’t distinguish the beginnings and ends
Classic punk. I guess it was the first. They started something but I can't say it's my favorite thing.
Crazy to me that they only released one album. Chaotic from start to finish; no wonder it's stuck around for so long. Also, this is some really great stuff to workout to.
A difficult listen at times but it’s cultural significance cannot be denied
Held up surprisingly well for the first full listen in probably 20 years. Surprised to give it a 3.
For what is, essentially, a faster, less capable, pub rock album (not that we thought so at the time!) this stands up surprisingly well after nearly 45 years.
Always mind the bollocks.
Oh for fuck's sake. The music is what it's all about, and the music is so good, especially when you put it in context of the time and influence. But I just want Johnny to shut the fuck up. I really think he ruins every song. The lyrics are 90% moronic drivel, and he just sounds like a pretentious twat the whole time, the whooole fucking time. I know he's an important part of the genre and bla bla, I just don't care, all I can picture is Rick Mayal jumping around on a stage trying to be edgy for the sake of it. Just fucking shut up, Johnny, and let me listen to the rest of your band because they're actually talented.
Punk as fuck
The pre-fab band that gave Punk its look (because its founder ran a clothing store and wanted to promote them and figured he could put a band together and sell music and clothing). Johnny Rotten's voice becomes a little grating by the time you get to the end but still worth a listen every once in a while. 3.5/5
Hmm... Mir fehlt der historische Kontext. Aber teilweise nice
All I can think of is Fred Armisen sketches
Even with familiarity it sounds full of energy. Slightly tame nowdays, but still furious, clever, rebellious and electrifying take on youth rock'n'roll. Rightly one of the better punk records of all time. Not quite a 4 because it's not quite got enough hooks.
I liked it. 3 stars, baby
I can appreciate how influential this is, and I like the punk aesthetic. They're not my favorite punk band by a long shot, though.
An album I feel like I would've loved if I found it before all the other punk music I got into prior. Don't get me wrong, I know how influential this record is, but I personally can't give it a five. Rotten's snarl/sneer vocals get tired after a while, and a lot of the songs begin to blend together. Still an important record. Favorite tracks: "Pretty Vacant", "Problems"
