I'm not a fan of Morrisey or the Smiths, but if I was I probably would enjoy this as it sounds very much like everything else he and they have done.

Je ne suis pas encore très familier avec Morrissey et les Smiths. Ce premier effort solo part fort. L'époque est bien marquée, mais j'aime beaucoup la guitare dans la première pièce. L'enchaînement avec la deuxième pièce fonctionne bien. Everyday Is Like Sunday est sympathique. Bengali est un peu moins intéressante, mais Angel Angel Down We Go Together avec seulement Morrisey et des cordes nous la fait rapidement oublier. La face A se passe pas trop mal même si rien n’est mémorable. Le style vocale reste proche de ce qu’il faisait avec les Smiths. Garder l’intérêt sur la face B est plus ardu. Heureusement, avec sa guitare, I Don't Mind If You Forget nous ramène dans l'ambiance de Alsatian Cousin. C’est bien d’entendre où va Morrissey après les Smiths, mais je préfère tout de même le groupe.

Yeah, I liked most tracks. Since this was his debut record, it was very reminiscent of The Smiths. The guitar work here is really pleasant. Still don't like Morrissey, though.

Morrissey’s first solo album strikes a different tone from his work with the Smiths. He has an incredible gift for melody and his voice and delivery style are iconic. There are some truly incredibly songs on this album. One song that I found challenging was ‘Bengali in Platforms.’ I know this song is controversial, and while I see how this song could be seen as darkly ironic, the use of the word ‘belong’ is a bit troublesome to me.
The first album post Smiths from the Mozfather. Decent but missing the soaring Marr guitars. 4/5
This is a pretty good album despite Morrissey's personality. Exceeded my expectations.
Dark, morose and beautiful
There are some songs on this album that I would like if someone else sang them. In my review of the last Morrissey solo album we were sent, I said his voice had worn on me by the time the Smiths blew up. Getting another Morrissey solo album so soon after the first is like rubbing vinegar in the wound. No way this brother should have two solo albums in the 1001. If he has a third it's getting a 1.
Wow! That first song was so great! The guitar! So much promise! And so lackluster after that! The title! Hilarious he has a song named Maudlin Street, the second song in a row where he uses the phrase “I truly Love you”. (details may not be exactly right, I couldn’t go back and listen to it again) I agree with the Spin review: "without guitarist/composer Johnny Marr at his side, the mahatma of mope rock seems to have gone out for a nice depressing stroll without noticing that he didn't have a stitch to wear".
Morrissey is like a few other talented douchie artists out there, yes I'm talking to you Van Morrison. Its hard to separate the art from the artist, but yet we must try to preserve the integrity of 1,001 rating system. That being said, I really find Morrissey's voice annoying and he seems to put out albums with one decent song and the rest is just dreck. Eg on this album its Everyday is like Sunday. On The Queen is Dead its only saved by There is a light that never goes out. Unfortunately one good song does not an album (that you have to listen to before you die) make.
I've complained too much already about the over-representation of Morrissey on this list: but I just don't get it. Pretentious, gloomy, musically not that special. Teen angst on a bigger budget.
Post Smith's first outing for Mr Morrisey, Steven, the quintessential English, working class rock star, starts life without his Anchorman Johnny Marr, with a good attempt at a smiths light album. I do like it but it lacks the musical power of the Smiths studio albums. I liked "Little Man What Now" "Everyday Is Like Sunday" and "Suedehead" I am so disappointed at his support to the extreme right wing views he has professed in the past and although I understand that unless I sat and spoke to him I can not profess to understand what he believes I feel his statements have undoubtedly damaged his and the Smiths legacy.
Morrisey’s bestest album
Seemed better than his Smiths stuff but not much. Meh.
Really solid follow up from Morrissey after the death of The Smiths. Similar to my feelings of that band, I enjoy this album best in brief intervals rather than the whole. Still, this I'd a very good album nonetheless. Favorites: "Alsatian Cousin", "Everyday Is Like Sunday", "Suedehead"
Is this his best solo album? It's pretty good but obviously not Smiths class. Suedehead and Sunday are excellent. Interesting I thought that Bengali in Platforms doesn't come across racist at all to me compared to what he's like these days

Had this on tape when I was in sixth form, and listened quite a bit. Wasn't a Smith's fan, and didn't buy another Morrissey album, but there's a couple of serious tunes on here, and listening in 2021 revealed layers of instrumentation and production I'd not heard before. Suedehead is a proper banger

Before he went all weird, I listened to this a lot on the original vinyl and loved it’s musical variety, despite being crushed that there wouldn’t be anything else from the Smiths. A great collection of tracks and collaborations. One of his best albums. Top tracks: everyday is like Sunday, late night maudlin street, suedehead
I'm gonna be real honest. I'm giving this 4 because it sounds just like a Smiths album. From the powerful yet jangly synths, to the unique vocal style, and the introspective lyrics, there's little for me to dislike. Has a couple hits, several other tracks to sing along or dance off to, and only a few that are indisputably weak. Nothing new or crazy, except for some intriguing techniques here and there. It's a solid debut.
I like how the songs keep it interesting with having a nice variety. I also enjoy the overall low-key mood of it, without it being a downer.

Morrissey's preoccupation with a halcyon Britain largely of his own imagining was mildly disquieting even in the heyday of the Smiths - hinting at a social and political alignment at odds with that of many of his admirers. This album marks the point at which he started to say the quiet part out loud - as was obvious to many when it was released, despite the efforts of his apologists to explain away its questionable aspects. Whatever he intended with its title, it reads today as a declaration of intent. Yeah yeah yeah, but shouldn't we distinguish between the artist and his work? Fortunately we can sidestep that thorny issue, because this album, Mozza's first without the benefit of Marr's guitar, amounts to no more than a couple of lukewarm singles and a wodge of nondescript filler.
Decent album, although I much prefer the Smiths versus Morrissey solo (something Mar's jangly guitars). Bengali in Platforms and Suedehead are highlights. 3/5

It's Morrissey, so it's good…I guess. this week has been tough picks for me and I don't have the headspace for a Morrissey album. But thanks for the reminder that Maggy is dead!
Fun to discover that Moz had tons of influence, kinda almost directly in sound, on the artist i adore much like Liverpools' Space. But the songwriting in Viva Hate is just moderate.

I liked this album okay. After a while every song starts to sound the same, though. Morrissey has a very specific style, and I don't mind it, but I do wish that he would have introduced more variation into this album. I think that's why I tend to enjoy Smiths albums a bit more than Morrissey's solo stuff 3/5

Hey, they can't all be suedehead
Before this listen, I've only listened to The Smiths and none of Morrissey's solo releases. Think what put me off was that I loved The Smith's instrumentation more than the lyrics and the vocals. The album itself is pretty good, but not memorable. Did like Suedehead and Everyday is like Sunday though.

Good but not amazing.
This album didn't feel all that special to me. There's nothing absolutely wrong with it, as the tunes are nice and Morrissey's vocals are pleasant enough. There's just nothing that makes it stand out to me at all. It's classified as alternative rock, but to me it's on the verge of pop. I'm giving it a weak 3 stars.

Not too many people or really anyone, can carry the desperation, longing, and hopefulness that Morrissey provides with his solo debut. Something about these bossanova beats and his crooning voice creates a melancholy dance and makes me yearn for unrequited teenage love and regret. Even though these heavier feelings emerge, I still am filled with happiness as the album makes it seem possible to go back to the past with new enlightenment and say things you never could’ve said then. Overall: fantastic record and the first 5/5 so far. Instant buy and a mark in the collection.

It's hard not to let thinking Morrisey is an idiot affect the rating here, but in the end I'm not sure what makes this so great it's like most other people's first solo albums after they left a group, a bit disappointing.

Jesus, imagine the amount of self-awareness you have to lack to write the non-conformist "Dial-a-Cliché" and then be so stereotypically British that you have one song about wanting Thatcher dead and another about how you don't want foreigners in your country. There's a lot of sad, horny British (in that order) wailing on this record, but it lacks Soul Mining's compelling sound or the bombastic energy that kept a handful of a-ha songs on my phone. it's hard to approach an album I've probably heard 100 times as most thoughts I've had about the album shriveled up and died 2 decades ago. anyway Morrissey's solo debut definitely proved to be the prototype for most of his solo career, namely that each album has about 3-4 amazing songs and 8-10 more you don't care about. weirdly the one of his that I think is more or less bangers start to finish isn't even on this stupid list (Bona Drag) but they curiously thought to include Your Arsenal, and granted, Glamorous Glue is a good song but not THAT good. even though like 8 tracks on this album are forgettable if not outright terrible, the handful of classics on here earn it at least a 3. Morrissey is one of those acts where even diehard fans are just like "yeah just let me make you a mixtape" because boy he landed a lot of duds
26th July 2021 Listened on my phone in the morning while getting ready for work. Finished on the Tuesday after choosing to read on the way to bowling with Andy. As Morrissey would say "I don't mind". I enjoy the down to earth, everyman that Morrissey can be but I'm not hugely sold. Never been a Smith's fan either.
Mi affido alla media matematica perché il "Morrissey personaggio" mi sta sul cazzo e vorrei essere più obiettivo possibile. Allora, Morrissey non posso dire che è uno che aspettavo al varco ma ero curioso di confrontarmici perché non l'avevo mai ascoltato prima ma è universalmente osannato. Questo album m'ha fatto una strana impressione, ho trovato a tratti geniale e molto avanti coi tempi la parte compositiva e di arrangiamento ma trovo che lui sia abbastanza pesantino. La cosa che mi ha colpito è che ho letto dopo che Morrissey è considerato un grandissimo paroliere. Io stavo per dire che i testi sono la parte più debole, l'avranno pure studiati ma onestamente non ci trovo niente di geniale, le solite immagini vaghe da cantautore edgy condite con qualche "I hope you die" per sconvolgere. Direi che potrei riassumere l'album con: musicalmente avanti coi tempi e raffinati, lui non m'ha convinto e non m'è arrivato. Direi un 3.5 che non mi sento di promuovere a 4 nonostante stia in fase di svacco e c'ho pensato all'inizio.
Il suo stile è talmente brutto che a tratti lo trovo affascinante. Comunque sarebbe un bel disco da 1 ma l’ultimo pezzo in cui dice che vuole uccidere la thatcher gli fa guadagnare un punto. Bengali è veramente una canzone assurda. No mentre scrivevo sono ripartiti alcuni pezzi, il voto è 1.
Suedehead is a classic, the rest didn't hold me quite as well
This was an enjoyable pop album which I expected since The Smiths, The Queen is Dead, is one of my favorite albums ever. Really only a certain few tracks dragged on then it needed to be but besides that really enjoyed the brevity of the project. That being said Morrissey is a piece of shit cunt and an absolute dickhead I absolutely hate him as a person but I can't deny at the time his personality was not like this as well as his ideals. Peggy said it best "I cannot fucking wait until Morrissey Dies". 8/10
I'm remembering when this album first came out, on the heels of the Smiths' breaking up. All good Smiths fans took this album in with great anticipation, and maybe with a hint of disappointment. It's an early lesson that people move on and grow up, and do things we don't entirely appreciate or understand. I agree with others here that Morrissey's work in general is a notch below what he did in the Smiths. That said, this album is lyrically more mature and has some beautiful arrangements that you probably would never find on a Smiths album. I'm still moved by "Suedehead" and "Everyday is Like Sunday," as much as I was at 17. Nobody does sweet pathos and longing like Morrissey.
Brilliant. Not just lyrically but musically and I found this surprising. I was expecting I'd need to really pay attention to the lyrics to appreciate this album fully but the music perfectly captures the mood and emotion of his lyrics and compliments his singing brilliantly meaning I could tune out every now and then and just enjoy the music. Will definitely be adding this to the listen again list and I'm sure it'll get even better with further listens.

Great album haven't listened to it in many years. Everyday is like Sunday is just such an incredible song. Top 5 Morrissey songs, including The Smiths output. Hardly a dud on the album. I'm tempted to give it a 5 star rating but 4.5 seems right which means 4 stars for this exercise
It's just a collection of subpar love songs. The vocals have a small range of 4 or 5 notes, the lyrics have next to no depth and always talk about someone else, and the background is the best part of every song. If you have to listen to this, just listen to the instruments because that's how you'll get the most out of this album. Favorite track: Everyday Is Like Sunday

Nothing amazing but it was enjoyed at moments. Morrissey is a good singer and that carries the album. A few songs have anecdotal moments but overall the album lacks support and doesn’t hit the spot. 6.1/10
overall thoughts: I enjoyed this album quite a lot. Morrissey is one of those people I can't separate from the music. All I can think about when listening to him is how he sounds like a shitty version of The Cure mixed with Joy Division. The Smiths will always be what comes to mind when I hear the words "domestic abuser." Not that he's a domestic abuser, but if there were ever a soundtrack to domestic abuse, it would be The Smiths.

I went into this not sure how I’d feel about it. I haven’t heard much of Morrissey’s music, but I’ve gotten the general impression that he’s kind of a dick. After listening to most of the album, I was inclined to give it 2 stars because it just seemed kind of generic and didn’t really do anything for me. Sure, Morrissey has a good voice, but he uses it to do this kind of mopey crooning that’s just blah. But, Margaret on the Guillotine convinced me to bump that up to 3 stars. That song is great and a perfect way to end the album.

Sonically there's a lot of interesting things going on here. Viva Hate has a very distinctive sound that's different to much of the Smiths output. Lyrically though, I don't care all that much at times for Morrisey's politics and social commentary.

The Smiths and Morrissey were part of the soundtrack of my college years. I didn't actively dislike their music; I just found them a bit dull for my ear. I'm also not a big fan of Steve Morrissey's voice. Like his music overall, it's not grating or terrible or anything like that. It's just not a voice I enjoy hearing. The guitar work on "Margaret on the Guillotine" is really nice (Vini Reilly played it), and on this one song Morrissey's voice sounds a little like Frank Orrall of Poi Dog Pondering (the song has an overall Poi Dog feel, too), and I love Frank Orrall's voice and Poi Dog Pondering's music, so I do like that song. Anyway, I know the music of The Smiths and Morrissey is an important part of the 80s -- not sure what the correct rock subgenre is, maybe "alternative," whatever that might mean -- scene, so I get why this on the list.

This is way more the catchy Morrissey that makes it hard for me to denounce his notoriously eye rollable personality. Not quite the same level as The Smiths as a whole but definitely some gems on here and an overall decent album.

Hated this from the first note, dated bass line/guitar effect. The choices for instrumentation on the first half of this movie are questionable, e.g. synth strings on “Everyday is Sunday” are awful. Lots of shitty world music vibes there sounding dated as fuck. The strong vocal presence and lyrics of Morissey wasn’t enough to save it. I was ready to vote this a 1, but then heard the latter half of the album (4 songs) toned down songs were the only bright spot, “break up the family” “treat me like a human being” the songs that stick to the 80s rubric work. It’s like he was trying to cast off the 80s and join the 90s. The 90s was a mistake. Yuck. 2 stars.

Ennakkoasenne oli, että Morrissey ei olisi ihan omaan mieleen. Levyn alku oli kuitenkin yllättävän mukaansa tempaava, mutta kun samalla selätti bittejä, niin jäi taustamusiikiksi ja tuntui, että ei sitten kuitenkaan ole erityinen levy. Kuuntelin kuitenkin seuraavana päivänä uudelleen ja tokalla kierroksella tykkäsinkin taas enemmän levyn tunnelmasta.
as i skipped through the tracks of Viva Hate I could not help but harken back to my days as a youth in Schlotzenberg. MY family and our adopted immigrant penguins would frolic in the summer sun as we played games of hide the cow tongue and shlemmel your sister suitor. One time Vincent could not completely hide the cow tongue and we mocked him to the point he swallowed the tongue. Such fond memories of those times. MOrrissey brought me back to those simpler times when my only worry was did I have enough sawdust to satisfy the local chieftain. Those really were simpler times back then. I give this album five schnazelbangers
Not wholly unenjoyable, but a little repetitive and there were a couple of songs that were as little cringey. I'll probably not come back to it any time soon. I'll stick with the Smiths

Creo que ya lo dije, pero Morrissey entra en la categoría de artistas que me gustan, pero que no escucho con tanta frecuencia. Este disco medio lo conocía, hace mucho no lo escuchaba y sí me parece muy bueno. Creo que Morrissey sabe hacer un buen balance de letras y melodía, si bien a veces no es nada espectacular. Pero de acá, "Suedehead" sí es una gran gran canción y en realidad no tengo skips, porque casi todas me gustan por igual. El final, hermoso con "Margaret on the Guillotine". Siempre político él, aunque se haya hecho nefastito. Viva Viva Hate! 9.5/10

Viva Hate sounds a lot more badass than the sort of middling whine he does throughout most of this album. I think The Smiths, and by extension, Mr. Morrissey here, are one of my favorite finds of this whole list. I really dig the sound. That being said, I really don't get the hardon some people have for him. Just look at him.

Morrissey is extremely hit and miss for me. An entire album of his is a tough finish. It's just okay.
I have listened to the Smith's some but don't know a ton about Morrissey (other than what I have heard from Jon) so I am coming to this more or less with fresh ears. I liked "Everyday is Like Sunday", so smooth and 80's in a good way. Like the spooky guitar work on "Late Night, Maudlin Street". I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would.

The Morrissey sound
I like the Smiths alright, Morrissey's solo stuff less so. I think this album is saved for me by Vini Reilly's guitar work. I like his sound, particularly on "late night, maudlin street" with the delay. I find this album to be a bit of a drag. 2.5 rounded up to 3.
I did not give this a fair shake, but I am not in the mood for Morrissey at all, lol. This feels like more of the same, maybe a little weaker than the last one we listened to. It's all fine, nothings bad... I will give it 3* since I feel like it's more my mood that isn't into it.
Still full of The Smiths essence, all in all not too bad, only 1 or 2 bangers.
Olen monta kertaa antanut mahdollisuuden näille Morrisseyn vanhemmille soololevyille, mutta aina päällimmäisenä fiiliksenä pieni pettymys The Smithsin levyihin verrattuna. Hittibiisit Everyday Like Sunday ja Suedehead toki toimii aina, mutta näiden lisäksi levy jätti edelleenkin hieman kylmäksi. Ehkä sävellysten taso ei vaan riitä ilman Johnny Marria aisaparina.
