Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Honestly expected to be more captivated than I was, given how The Smiths have grown on me over the course of the project.

Such a hard listen

Each Morrissey album I listen to I like less than the previous. It felt very blah. Not my vibe to be sure.

Growing up I was (and still am) a huge fan of the Smiths discography, pretty close to impacable. I've felt that Morrissey doesn't have a strong discography and even further diluted with mid tier albums he's done since unretireing/lost the plot. Smiths and him have been old school strong singles artists that don't appear on any album. I've been familiar and a fan of many of his songs, but not his albums. This is another example, Everyday and Suedehead are huge, but i couldn't really find anything else that compares or compliments the heights those songs reach. Sorry to rate this low Moz, i'm sure i'll hear about it at your next concert if you ever decide to stop skipping them. Just retire and live your life dude, seriously.

Heard one, heard em all. Can’t be bothered - neutral rating for this one and if any more pop up, will be skipping. 2.5/5

Boring and lame

Everyday is like Sunday and suedehead are magnificent but they do sound very much like smiths songs. When there are experimental songs it just sounds a bit vaudevilian and messy. Not an album to return to with any relish

Talented, but not really my thing.

Nääh

Cheer up mate

Oh! the irony (foresight?) of Morrissey naming an album Viva Hate. But getting round to the content, it's as if the lyrics (though good as ever) have never met the music before. The only exception being Dial a Cliché, which is the most Smiths-like track here. It's tempting to conclude that, without Johnny Marr, Morrissey is just a honky baritone with a preference for a plodding backing band. Glad this is out of the way. 2*

Nothing stood out, was fine but not great.

Not really!

Very very average

Better than any other Morrissey album but that is a LOW bar.

I think I understand Morrissey’s place in the universe of music and the contributions of The Smiths in particular, but is it my imagination or to all of his songs start to sound the same after a very short while? That seems to be particularly true on this album. And man he is whiny.

Not really a fan of him or the Smiths

Easy listen, but a bit boring a melodramatic for me.

meh... nothing of real value to listen to here...don't hate it but ain't making it to my playlist.

Oh my god, stop giving me Morrissey records. Bro can sing for sure, but this one meanders around for the entire runtime. And fuck Morrissey (not sexually)

Okay, so after the horror of listening to one of The Smiths' albums, I wasn't really expecting the guy alone to sound like this which is a way to say that the listening experience is more... bearable? But I really don't like his voice and his lyrics just make him sound needy so all in all this is just easier to dissociate from that his previous band stuff.

Isn't this the guy that keeps cancelling his concerts for stupid reasons? Anyway, I don't like him in the Smiths, and I don't really like him here either. There are also some not so subtle racist themes (Bengali in Platforms) that make the general undercurrents quite unpleasant

I felt so much dread approaching this album that I put off listening to it by a day. Wasn't as awful as expected but all Morrissey's songs do sound the same to me and I find it impossible to separate the art from the artist in this case. Not for me. Rating: 2.

Early industrial, driving, some vocal. Couple alright songs, no bangers.

Too brokenhearted, too whiny and too dull. I did not enjoy this. Just too much of the same. This review has so many too's so I guess this album gets a two.

It'd be better if Morrisey didn't sing or write the lyrics

I gave myself a headache rolling my eyes when I saw this come up. To say I'm not a fan of Morrissey is an understatement. And this goes way back before his dodgy political views became the reason to not like him. I can't separate the art from the artist, because their "art" is just as questionable to me. That posh, nasally, whiney voice warbling all over the place, set to melodies that are dull and boring. Not for me. And this is Morrissey without the buffer of being able to enjoy the creativity and inventiveness of Johnny Marr's guitar. But, unlike Morrissey himself, I'm going to try to be as open-minded as possible. So, here are some actual positives about the album. While I disliked almost everything I heard on the first play-through, I have to admit that on subsequent listens some of the songs were less annoying than they first seemed. "Alsation Cousin" has some decent enough guitar textures, "Little Man, What Now?" has Spanish-infused acoustic guitar melodies that aren't bad at all, and "Late Night, Maudlin Street" has moments of interesting delay-soaked guitar work. Is it telling that anything good I have to say is about the guitar work, and not the man himself? OK, then let's be honest about the last song on the album, "Margaret on the Guillotine". I liked it. And as odd as it is to say it, it's a very rare moment when myself and Morrissey's politics overlap. While the guitar melody is great, I'll try to focus on saying something positive about Morrissey. I'm going to give myself a headache again. The lyrics are confrontational and intensely direct, and darkly funny. And what the hell, even his voice isn't annoying in this song. There. I did it. But as for the rest of the album? Dull and insufferable. Just like Morrissey himself.

Kinda just meh at best. Doesn't land with me, I suppose.

Came and went. I don’t really remember too much about this one. Was okay I guess.

Viva Hate! I was really hoping this would be Morrisey at his worst. Singing about all the people he hates the most and why life is unbearable in so many ways. Turns out it might be his most mediocre album yet. Nothing really grabbed me. It has no edge like some of this other albums. No quirky sense of humor. No off the wall judgements. I came expecting to get an earful of hate and it was just dull. snooze.

Yesterday I got The Smiths. Today I get Morrissey. Not a great weekend. Whereas the Smiths album actually surprised me (I enjoyed the music more than I thought I would, having been a lifelong Smiths hater), this Morrissey album did not disappoint. It is terrible. It is an album with one well-manufactured pop song, and a long list of mediocre Poetry 101 lyrics and shockingly bad music. And I hadn't realized he was engaged in his racist, anti-immigrant rants all the way back in 1988. Bengali in Platforms is, frankly, unforgivable. I went online and can find many people defending it, claiming it actually is meant to show empathy and describe the plight of the immigrant. Without any external context that's a stretch - the chorus is literally a statement declaring the Bengali is someone who doesn't belong. And I feel pretty convinced of my rectitude on this one given Morrissey has dedicated a large portion of his life to spewing anti-Muslim, anti-Hindu, anti-immigrant, and anti-people-who-don't-look-like-me rhetoric. The top positive review on here does an embarrassing job of apologism. "He's a cunt, but he's our cunt". I took cunt to mean asshole, not anti-immigrant racist. If that's "your cunt", please take him with you. Far away. Morrissey doesn't merit defense as a human - he's a bad one. But my review doesn't have a lot to do with that, apart from that one reprehensible song. Even beyond that, this album, frankly, sucks.

Totally forgot what I thought about it by Monday.

Hai algúns singles apañados ('Everyday Is Like Sunday' e 'Suedehead', principalmente), pero o conxunto do disco pareceume bastante inane e prescindible. Pensei que me ía molar moito máis do que o terminou facendo e creo que todo ten a ver con canto boto en falta as guitarras de Johnny Marr (#21 dos 1.001 discos que escoitar antes de morrer: 1,5/5)

I hate UK alt rock but the smiths are the best of a bad genre. and this guy was from the smiths. Edit: TIL that this guy sucks as a human. welp it was going to be 3 stars but now its 2 stars

The softer tracks are very boring. The rest are okay but not good. The instrumentals are sometimes grating. I don't like the singer's voice. I have yet to listen to a good piece of music with the word "Viva" in its title.

Damn my third Morrissey album all before #140. I guess he’s influential enough, even without The Smiths. I honestly don’t understand why his solos are included so much, but here we are.

If I don’t listen to the lyrics, I would say this music feels like yearning. Would have given it a 3 but apparently this man is a POS. So….

Sad boy songs, but have to admit it wasn't all that good either. Also just a fucking shit human being in general.

Didn't feel strongly about this one either way. As far as a morrissey work goes it is listenable but his voice is only tolerable for a while. And then you read the lyrics and stories of bengali in platforms.

I was kinda dreading listening to this, but you know what? It's fine. Never been that into the Smiths and Morrissey was the part of that group I disliked the most, so surprised that I mostly enjoyed this. Probably won't ever listen to it again though.

1. Track 4……… is one of the worst things I’ve ever heard. 2. No shade to any of the people involved with this (except Morrissey) but J***** M*** could’ve really elevated some of the dross that’s on here.

to stale

Not my thing

Another boring one.

Goddamn it, another Morrissey album. "Every Day is Like Sunday" is the only redeeming track on here. I did skim the rest of it, but can't really get behind it. 1.5 stars properly.

Pretty boring album in my opinion. 2 stars or D+.

A couple decent songs but mostly pretty forgettable. A significant step down from his work it the Smiths.

Morrissey’s debut album was plenty popular upon its release and grabbed plenty of positive reviews from journos broken-hearted at the end of their favourite group. Me? I never really engaged with Morrissey post-Smiths, a decision that’s stood me in good stead over the years and listening to Viva Hate properly for the first time, it’s striking just how dull a record it is. Suedehead is probably the standout track, insofar it feels alive and vital, rather than the album’s other much lauded single Everyday Is Like Sunday, which indicates strongly that singing songs about being bored, is quintessentially quite boring. Of the rest, I’m struggling to engage with much at all – I just can’t bring myself to care. 4/10

good voice but meh

The smiths is leuker

Hmm zonder de smiths mag hij nog meer janken. Iets te veel voor mij.

Pretty sedate stuff and musically uninteresting for long stretches. The draw is Morrissey's lyrics but that only goes so far for me.

I never understood why everyone hated Morrissey on all the Smith album reviews until I listened to this. Without the rest of the Smiths behind him, he really is just a pretentious and annoying whiney singer. This was a tough one to get through.

Hate this slow depressing style of pop/rock. It screams “feel sorry for me”. Lyrically it didn't age well and musically it’s boring. Pass on this one.

Morrissey minus Marr equals shite. Plus he’s generally disagreeable. Two tracks of note otherwise it’s a pile of shite.

*It too often sounds like he's just talking over an odd guitar melody. *Just doesn't resonate for me.

Not a huge fan of his voice. Don't really like The Smiths but it was cool to hear his own stuff. Overall, not bad but not my fave.

Closer to a 1.75.

Best thing I can say is I didn't hate it, but I really can't stand him.

Is this it? Am I finally finished being forced to listen to this man?

I have never liked his voice. Unlike the Smiths, I don't know what people like about this. Even the weirdness feels forced. Some catchy melodies. But parts of this is really painful and I've thought about skipping the rest of the album more than once. "Late Night, Maudlin Street" might be the worst thing I've heard in a long time. The longer I listen to this album, the more painful it gets. OMG, it's over. What a relief. 2 points, because there are some actual musicians and sound engineers involved, and they did their best to make this somewhat listenable. I'm not going to edit this. It's not worth my time.

Eh. I don't like his singing voice all that much. Some bops but mostly uninteresting.

Morrissey's first post-Smiths LP, Viva Hate, makes it very clear as to what Morrissey's actually contributions were. Without Johnny Marr's guidance, the songwriting is all over the place. Moz still manages some earworms, like the dreamy, "Everyday is Like Sunday", but it feels far to easy to imagine any of these songs on an 'adult contemporary music' station. Just kinda bland. As usual, Morrissey's voice is grea.

I would rather just listen to The Smiths, this just doesn't have enough of that the jangly guitar that I enjoy so much in their songs. I also felt the lyrics while at times poetic didn't feel as witty or grab me the way some of Morrisseys songs with The Smiths do.

Not for me

Never really liked The Smiths so I was never interested enough to learn about Morrissey and discover the shitty attitudes I'm hearing about now. I suppose that makes it easier for me to separate the kinda shitty art from the very shitty artist.

Not as bad as I expected

Meh. I expect Morissey to impress me more at this point in our listening. 2.5

It's fine the guy is talented but Morrisey/Smiths have just never moved me. Just seem like pretentious Brits whining about shit

Smiths album devoid of charm resulting in an album of overly sad drivel. Perfect album for self obsessed pretentious dickheads.

Lot of British

Not my taste at all. His voice wears thin long before the album ends, and the whole thing just never connects with me.

2.5, it's fine but it wasn't particularly groundbreaking. It sounded like a Morrissey album of which there are apparently a million on this list.

Noiso, non mi piace particolarmente sto stile anni 90

A lot of moaning

This sort of washed past me. I had a glance at the lyrics to see how hateful they were, but raised no eyebrows. Schmorrissey...

Oh boy more Morrissey! His voice is still so unique even with so many other voices between the last album on this list. Unfortunately, I don't really care about anything he's got going on and none of this left a lasting impression. Nothing bad but mostly apathy other than some cool strings and instrumental moments.

Finally…my last Morrissey album. More of the same. It really begs the question, why are there so many albums of his when every album feels the same?

The discordant guitars at the start kind of decided for me that this wasn’t going to be an album I’d enjoy. But why do I like the Smiths and dislike this? Not sure - maybe it’s the absence of Johnny Marr that allows Morrissey to really embrace the mope. Some of the more melodic tracks I liked. I think the Smiths captures this ennui of young adulthood for me, but by this album Morrissey is just being a moaner and contrarian.

It was ok. I liked Suedehead 2

hey it's a crap smiths album.

This is the 4th album for me that involves Morrissey (2 solo, 2 Smiths), and I've come to the conclusion that this guy can't write an interesting melody. For that reason, none of his albums have appealed to me.

This was...fine? Cool, he's moody and political. Okay? Maybe I need to listen to more of The Smiths. Fave tracks: - Everyday Is Like Sunday - Suedehead - Dial-a-Cliché - Margaret on the Guillotine (lmao)

Morrissey’s singing is so so bad.

I'm fairly confident I have a crispy circa 2002 mp3 of Suedehead which was downloaded with the track title "I'm So Sorry" by the Smiths. As a whole the album is not good. Two good songs, much more drivel. Fuck Morrissey. 2.5

he's so annoying, both sonically and on the substance. most of the time. almost exclusively. this one has some nice moments though

Every Day is Like Sunday absolutely rips but as an album this is not good and I don't feel bad rating it a 2 because Mozzer is also not good Shame he's such a formative and important bedrock/keystone/whatever in my music taste

yuck and seems like an even yuckier person

Dios mio que poronga 2.0

Everyday Is Like Sunday definitely my favorite track on the album. Margaret On The Guillotine has major Radiohead vibes (or should I say, influenced Radiohead). Rest of the album is meh; a little too 80s for me.

Yet another album with the delightful Morrissey on it, and once again it's musically great but ruined by his stupid warbly voice. Lyrics are mostly meh, but occasionally cringey.

Away from the Smiths, I find his voice grating and the music uninteresting. And, in 2025, nobody needs to be giving Morrissey a free pass

Sounds like he’s about to cry. Kind of a downer to listen to.

Ugh, Morrissey... Not a fan. I liked "Margaret on the Guillotine" because it meant the album was almost over.

Cute, easy listen.

Same as the Smiths -- cool sounding well executed work that's obviously been transformative for rock and pop, but doesn't really land for me.

All I knew of Morrissey was that he had some moody songs. And, yeah, this is pretty mopey. I like some sad songs on occasion, but I don't really want to sit in it unless it's evoking an experience I can understand. I wouldn't even call myself a particularly happy person, but I wasn't even like this as a teen. I'm clearly not the target audience.

It was a matter of time

I like the Smith's but I don't think I like this. It's too... cheesy? I don't know, his voice isn't hitting the same way. Most of the songs are self-indulgent and much too 80s in a bad way. Sounds almost like church music to me but with a voice that isn't good enough to make the solo during communion. Meh. Not terrible, But I'm not enjoying it either. Guitar was fine but it really just doesn't hold up to other things I really like.

Interesting sound. Except king of depressing.

The real low point is “Bengali in Platforms,” a song that’s not just uncomfortable but indefensible. Its patronizing tone and assimilationist message—“life is hard enough when you belong here”—reek of xenophobia. Defenders call it satire, but there’s no bite, no irony—just a smug dismissal of immigrant identity. It’s a stain on the album and a warning sign of Morrissey’s increasingly reactionary worldview. Viva Hate tries to be introspective and poetic, but ends up sounding bitter and blinkered. For fans of The Smiths, it’s a sobering reminder that great lyricists aren’t always great solo artists.

why do I feel like I *should* like Morrissey more than I do?

Unfortunately i dig his music

I know nothing about this man other than he was the lead singer of the smiths. Bengali in platforms was weird, the rest was ok.

It all becomes one long somewhat boring song.

Not bad, just kind of boring? I didn't even realize the album had ended.

Was this just one long smiths song?

The first song is interesting. The rest aren't really. As the top review says - not good to justify his personality.

Atmospheric alternative music that touches on Punk, Pop and soft rock. There are some flashes of brilliance here, but it just isn’t anywhere near what I’d choose to listen to. Maybe because I just never caught onto the Morrissey thing and am a bit biased against him. If it had a different name on it…. Who knows?

Morrissey is so much less good without the Smiths eh

another morrissey album?????? help us all, this was alright but not even his best so like 2/5 here we GOOOOO

Screw this guy, doesn't help that he is such a rubbish artist. This album is reminiscent of a "vibey" 80s album, much like the trend that is currently ruining the industry. His voice is just so creepy and icky, which highlights the worst version of British accents. Who tf likes this guy? Probs the worst person you know. I Don't Mind If You Forget Me was decent, I guess,

This is the bland 80's meh I don't like AND the dude's a douche. 3/10

An extra star for a couple bops, and I'm a sucker for that '80s sound. But no more, because he sucks as a person.

I get the feeling that I'd appreciate this more if I paid attention to lyrics. Something about the vocals just put me to sleep. Thaaaa aaaaaa uuuuuuus on eeeeeeeeveriiiiiiiiii line maybe?

Man I can't bear his voice. The music of Alsatian Cousin grabs me, but then he starts singing and I flee. Every Day is a faux-serious day. Bengali in Platforms is fucking offensive, more so because it pretends to be understanding. It begins to irritate me more the more I listen.

This could be amazing, but I've reached my Morrissey limit I'm afraid.

Dammit, Morrissey. He’s eminently hateable, it’s almost too easy. Actually I generally enjoyed this album, though the arrangements are kinda bland. I should have expected that, since I’ve heard some of his solo work and generally liked it. But then I read the lyrics to Bengali in Platforms (the title should have been a clue). It’s racist at worst and patronizing at best. Unfortunately, I do like Suedehead. And you can really hear his influence on Suede/Brett Anderson on his record, no wonder he named his band after that song. Anyway, although I like The Smiths and even some of Morrissey’s solo stuff, I really can’t stand him.

Damn. I wasted my "it's The Smiths for" construct on the wrong album. It woulda been perfect here. Sigh. This album is... fine. I want to say it sounds like a bunch of Smiths b-sides, but that would be a lie. Normally Smith's b-sides are amazing. Some of them are better than the a-sides. This is more like Smiths D-sides I suppose. Or maybe the band had booked studio time but Johnny Marr suffered a terrible injury on the way to the studio so he couldn't attend, and Morrissey said "thank god he's gone. fuck that guy. We're doing the album without him".. and the bassist and drummer just shrugged in fear. And then Moz wrangled some session guitarist who can play a little bit of everything but secretly wants to be playing some hard rock to fill in. And sure Marr kept calling from the hospital but he'd only get a sentence or two out before either the nurses would wrestle the phone away from him or Morrissey would just hang up and say to the rest of the band "wrong number". That's the vibe of this album. It just sounds like mediocre Smiths. I hope that later in his solo career he ventured further away from the 80s indie sound, that would help him avoid the comparison a bit more i think. Like he does on I Don't Mind If You Forget Me... which I can only describe as Morrissey goes pop punk. It's surprisingly good. If only the guitarist on the song wasn't such a dipshit, it'd be a truly great song. For some reason this absolute dumbass decides to do a frantic van halen-esque solo over 80% of the damn song. It's a mind-boggling creative choice and really drags the experience down. But it does kinda make me want to hear Moz do a 90s pop punk album... i hope that exists somewhere. I suppose I could get AI to make one but that just wouldn't be the same. Other than that song, this album was a mix of completely forgettable tracks and solid tracks that hinted at the Smiths but didn't deliver on that hint. On the latter, my ears craved that Johnny Marr touch to take the songs to the next level. In this category, I'd put Suedehead and Everyday is like sunday and Margaret on the guillotine. Solid songs but they just woulda been better as part of The Smiths. So this gets a 2 from me. P.S. if by some strange chance Morrissey lurks this website reading reviews for his solo albums, then i have a message for you: Hey Moz, go fuck yourself. Also, you were never as good as you were with Marr. Peace out.

Mid, 2 good songs the rest are ok to listen to.

Viva Hate sounds like a difficult and sad breakup with The Smiths. Pedestrian B cuts that seem very similar. (2.2*s) He won’t mind if I forget him. Having learned his lesson, he did not leave an impression

It's official: Morrissey is such a piece of shit that I barely can stand any song other than the hits.

Nothing special...

Why would you want a Smiths album without Johnny Marr, in which Morrissey actually vocalizes his racism?

like the smiths without johnny marr. I have a pretty high morrissey tolerance but this wore on me

Not fun

I didnt enjoy this. Morrisey is still funny tho.

Do I hate jangle pop? I think of myself as liking it, and then I hear this. Morrissey is good at what he does, which is a kind of melodramatic drawling about the most maudlin shit. He seems to be in on it, too: maudlin street, etc. And yet, ironically engaging in it is still engaging it and really, shut the fuck up Morrissey. The Smiths had some mega-hits, but it wears on me over time, not over an album. Don't know if I ever need to hear This Charming Man ever again, and yet here we are with something like more of the same. Some of these lyrics, in true Morrissey form, just piss me off. Some interesting guitar (there's that jangle!) but mostly I'm just not that interested in the sounds that are happening here. Credit to it sounding like the 80s without sounding like it's stuck in the 80s, and credit to exploring the varieties of jangle sound, but ultimately I'm just not sure I care. Background music. Probably a 3 but I think there's missed potential (maybe what's missing is the rest of the Smiths) so I'm dockin' ya, Steve. Tempted to bump you back up for dreamin' of Maggie's death but not good enough because the song kind of sucks!

look, say what you want about morrissey. does he have shitty bigoted beliefs? of course. but does he have an engaging personality? well no obviously he seems like a piece of shit ghfjsdgh. but does he have an engaging Art Image? well also no! unless a british coat of paint on tim burton-esque solipsistic faux-outsiderness becomes interesting to u with a dash of racist white queer for fun and flavor. but can he Write A Song...fuck no dude!!!! he's gotta be one of the most terminally aimless, shapeless, tuneless writers to stumble their way into the canon. well yaknow what fuck morrissey, at least johnny marr is here to..oh its a solo record. hm. (genuine credit where its due for the vast increase in dense and intricate and moody arrangements, picks right up from strangeways [my fave smiths record] and helps to compensate for the lack of the rest of the band. genuinely sounds great, very good gothic romantic appeal that id probably love if there were any vocal melodies at all, or a remotely compelling central presence at the heart of it)

Can you separate the music from the artists personality? Where Morrissey is concerned no. What a twat.

1 or 2 catchy songs, but not anything I’d ever go back and listen to again

unbearably slow and whinny

Ehhhhhh I tried. I promise I tried. I got pretty far into this album before every instinct I've ever developed as someone who loves music started to rebel. This well-executed. It doesn't sound like shit. The "shredding" on I Don't Mind is fucking obnoxious. This whole record just reeks of someone who wants something to say but can't come up with anything worth hearing.

My wife once tried to make a new brownie recipe. Instead of chocolate chips, she used cocoa powder. I was excited to try them as I still like all the ingredients in the recipe. When I took the first bite, I was shocked. There was no taste. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. I didn't know how to feel. That's how I feel about this album. Everything about it I should enjoy. It's my type of music. I like the instruments in the production. Morrissey isn't a bad singer. But nothing clicked for me. At the end of the album I didn't really remember any of it. I didn't feel the need to skip any songs and I wasn't wanting any tracks to be over with, but I also didn't ever say "I want to hear that again!"

More "post-punk" garbage music. Not sure who this style of music is for, but it's definitely not me. You'll occasionally get some half decent but forgettable tunes. On this album, those would be the singles "Suedhead", and "Everyday is Like Sunday". The best song though despite the grating guitar midway through is "I Don't Mind if You Forget Me". Which is barely good enough to make the 1001 playlist. I might remove it later who knows.

I didn't like his voice on this record; the music's somewhat ok, but the whole album is forgettable in a manner of speaking.

The problem is I am comparing it to The Smiths album I was just generated the day before… and this one does not hit as hard. There were some standout songs, but it became background music at one point as well.

This man has a great voice but bad lyrics and bland instrumentals.

I just cannot stand Morrissey post-Smiths. This is probably his best solo album, but it just annoys me throughout, with the exception of "Suedehead" which just feels like a subpar Smiths song. Morrissey is one-dimensional, and without Marr to add depth and counterpoint, it's just not good. There are some interesting/risky production choices throughout the album, and for the most part they don't work for me.

You know when being in a group makes it so that everyone’s worst impulses are held back? Well apparently the rest of the Smiths did that to Morrissey. This is just more depressing and more mopey than it should be. The saving grace is there’s none of the crazy right wing bullshit that Morrissey now shouts about.

Instrumente angenehm, aber es ist einfach nicht spannend und seine Stimme nervt, wie viele seiner Alben sind noch auf der Liste?

i wouldnt mind forgetting you either

The songs sound fine until Morrissey starts singing

Didnt hate it (or his voice) as much as i expected having been a smiths hater since i found punk in high school. That being said, shut uuuup jeeeeesus. Almost had me there in the first two songs, almost had me thinking this could slap

Super divisive artist. I was obsessed with The Smiths in my 20s. Something about the jangly moroseness worked for me. That said...most of this does not. Viva Hate gets 2/5 because it contains exactly two bangers: Everyday Is Like Sunday and Suedehead. The rest was, to use his words from a subsequent album, a crashing bore.

Emo. Favorite Track: Margaret on the Guillotine

“When will you die?” is a wild line

I think I'm failing a bit to see the genius of Morrissey. Sure, he is (was) good looking, has a very good voice, and perhaps the lyrics speak to some people. But I think I'm starting to realize I'm not a particular fan of his music. A quite 80s sounding album, where most songs feel like they're about Morrissey complaining about sad life. Not really the type of music I enjoy. I even failed to appreciate the most successful songs. Going to have to be a strong 2 for me, just not my thing.

Slightly better than the other albums I've heard from Morrissey. Still endless droning.

Everyday Is Like Sunday Suedehead

Not a Morrissey fan, never liked his voice, The Smiths or his music... this is gonna be painful. The listen counts are high, weakest song has 1.4M while the biggest has 139M. I gotta admit I liked the guitar work on "Alsatian Cousin", but his voice pains me, it's just not something I can try to enjoy. If he wasn't singing it would be a cool track. "Everyday Is Like Sunday" felt familiar and I'd like it if someone else did the vocals. The biggest hit, "Suedehead", was drivel, and so spot on for Morrissey music. He's just not my thing, I can't get past his voice to enjoy the music. I flat out did not enjoy this one. I'd rather listen to James Taylor and I loathe him. Too dark, vocals blow, nothing real catchy and one song that may have made the radio way back in '88, no influence or longevity that I'm aware of, it's just not worthy of the T1001. 2 stars.

Felt like a mix of Fleet Foxes and bland 80s rock. Another time I wonder why an album is on this list

Don't like the lyrics. The voice is so so.

Maudlin: “self pitying or tearfully sentimental.“ There is no other word to describe Morrissey’s music.

Morrissey fatigue is real I liked it more than some of his Smiths albums, but it's still the same moody crap

couldnt tell when one song ended and the other one started

I don't know. I didn't really connect with the Smiths and this feels more of the same. It's a very quintessential 80's sound but...I'm just bored.

I'm tired of this guy.

Tried, couldn’t.

Dreary and moany. No.

I found the music quite boring. The vocals were bland and very similar in each song. Listening to a single would be fine, but an entire album just feels like a broken record.

Just sorta blah for me. Pretty winey.

Not for me.

This album is lame and Morrissey sucks. I will admit I did like the song Break Up the Family. For that reason I'll give this 2 stars.

Out of tune

Almost back to back albums from this guy generated for me. Just consistently mid why does he get 2 albums

every song kinda sounds the same

Sure do enjoy being talked to...

#573. It's good that he doesn't mind if I forget him, because I surely will have done by the end of the week. 2/5: meh

I can see why some people like Morrissey. I'm not one of those people.

Oh god, this asshole. Putting his whole Morrissey-ness aside, this album is actually pretty boring and mopey. There are a few decent songs (Everyday is Like Sunday, Suedehead), but most are kinda meh. 2.5/rounded down for Morrissey's bullshit.

This sounded pretty much exactly like the Smiths to me. It's not bad but I'm not sure i can rate anything Morrissey did higher than a 2 on principle.

There are the same amount of Morrissey albums in this book as there are Smiths albums. What’s that about?

Outside of the single, not good. More tolerable than the last morrissey album.

Couple bangers

Shut up, Morrissey

The problem with Morrissey is that every Morrissey song sounds like every other Morrissey song. It's perfectly fine, but listening to more than two is simply redundant.

This isn’t for me

Yes yes, I like this. Will listen again fo sho. 4 stars. Apparently I wasn’t paying attention during the song about not wanting immigrants in the UK. So while I enjoyed the sound of this album and some of the songs, I have to reduce my rating. 2 Stars.

Gosh, it’s fine. I can’t shake a feeling of arrogance coming out of Moz in his solo stuff.

Another British Album. Not only do they all sound the same but they all seem like they are forever long. Apparently Viva Hate means a defiant or ironic embrace of negativity and the emotions associated with it, particularly grief and loss. I am definitely negatively embracing the lost of 40 minutes on this album.

Why is there so much Morrissey on this list? He’s just so overwrought and sludgy

Two fabulous singles and a lot of filler which never really cut it with me, I'm afraid. Morrissey had a great run of singles (and B-sides) following the demise of The Smiths, but didn't hit the ground running with his long players. Bona Drag gives a far better account of his early years as a solo artist than either of his first two studio albums, in my opinion. I'm sure this is not the last I will see of Stephen Patrick Morrissey on this list, but it will probably be the least.

10er das ist eines der top 1001 Das war nicht besonders irgendwas

Nothing too exciting musically, and Morrissey is a wanker.

Really Mid, just like the man who made it

Not super amped about this, but then again I don't really love the Smiths either, so go figure. It's a little poppy for me, and a little too mainstream 80s. It seems like a decent album for people into that kind of thing, just not my schtick.

Couple decent songs but overall very underwhelming and forgettable. Nothing majorly off putting, just nothing exciting either.

"Everyday is like Sunday" is nice, the rest is really not my thing. I never liked The Smiths, as well.

Not a fan of the whining

meh. music for sad teenage girls.

Fav song: Margaret On The Guillotine I generally find Morrisey really hard to listen to - and then he has an occasional moment of absolute brilliance. Unfortunately, these moments are few and far between, and are punctuated all too often with ridiculous songs about crazy things.

Yes yes, I like this. Will listen again fo sho. 4 stars. Apparently I wasn’t paying attention during the song about not wanting immigrants in the UK. So while I enjoyed the sound of this album and some of the songs, I have to reduce my rating. 2 Stars.

Singers in bands tend to get all of the attention and credit. So when singers go off to do solo work, it offers the chance to recognize the unnoticed impact of the other band members. This is readily apparent for Morrissey. His solo work here isn't awful by any means but clearly Johnny Marrs's songwriting and instrumentation was a key aspect to The Smiths's success. The song complaining about Indian immigrants knocks this down a star though. There is something nefarious about hearing Morrisseys' sad wistful voice - so commonly heared mourning some lost love - complaining about non white people in the subway station. Yuck.

I don't know what to make of Morrisey, it's ok. His songs sound so rambley to me, The guitar made some songs better. 2* Highlights: everyday is like sunday, margaret on the guillotine (guitar)

Dull - 1 for nazi too

Mmmm…..nah 3/10. Some good but I only liked them I didn’t add any to a playlist. Extremely dated

- so, not a big Smiths fan and don't really care enough about them and Morrissey to know anything about him (apparently a bit of an asshole, no shortage of those these days ....). As such, all I can go by is the listen .... which is as it should be - and I just didn't really care while I was listening to this one. I'll listen to it again ... maybe it needs a few spins. 2.5 but I'm gonna round down ..... -

3eme album de cet artiste, pas mieux que les 2 autres mais plus mou. Je suis allé jusqu'au bout mais quel ennui ! Et dire qu'il a encore un album en stock dans la liste ... =>2/5

2 star, decent songs, tired of hearing dude's whining voice.

I'm just not a Morrissey fan, at all. One good song by The Smiths.

Meh, not bad for pop from this era.

# Playlist track - Everyday is Like Sunday # Notes - First album after "Smiths" broke up. Mar is sorely missed! - There are good tracks, sure, but it's just not as good as "The Queen is Dead" and it ends in a very very boring couple of tracks.

Gear: Focal Clear (ZMFed) Artwork: 📸🔳🧛 Production (2011 Remaster): 😐🙂👌 Music: 🌧️🖤🔁 Rating: 🌧️🌧️/5

I listened to this album on Christmas Eve. It was alright by Morrissey standards. The songs were just average late 80s tunes. I honestly think that there are too many Morrissey albums on this list. Two Smiths albums and maybe one of his solo albums is enough. 2 stars for "Viva Hate".

Morrissey... overrated douche. 2.5 rounding down.

I am not a fan of morrisey’s voice. The music on here has its moments, but overall I didn’t care for it.

One good song, "Everyday Is Like Sunday", and a whole lot of whining from that twat Morrissey

As disappointing today as it was when released. An INCREDIBLE aspect of the Smith's run is that any of their albums would get 5 stars. This? The lyrics may still be interesting, but the music is dull; the magic was never Morrissey or Marr but arose from the tension between.

Turhauttava laulelija kirjoittaa pari biisiä, jotka käyvät pop-hiteistä.

I was dreading this when I saw it pop up this morning. Morrissey is a bit of a prick in my eyes, and this album didn’t change that view much. I found this quiet tedious, even though there are a few decent tunes on this thing. Not a 1* but it came pretty close to it.

Hmmm, could be tricky. I think 'Every Day Is Like Sunday' is a genuinely classic track. I used to think 'Suedehead' was one as well. However, although it's certainly a catchy tune, I have an awful feeling that, knowing what we know now, it can be re-read as racist. Troublesome at best. The rest of the album feels inconsequential by comparison. Morrissey himself has now repeatedly shown himself to be so unlikeable that it's hard not to view his work a lot more harshly.

Basically fine but missing a certain something.

Meh 2/5

Well, I can't say I enjoyed a single track here. I didn't outright hate any of them, but this was very much not my jam. It was both very 80s and also boring after a while. 1.7

The guy's an absolute weapon, and this album is headbangingly dull. Unfortunately, I have a soft spot for Everyday is Like Sunday. So it's two stars.

The Smiths is soms taai gejengel, maar jezus dit is een lastige om doorheen te komen

2 not bad but boring

It’s too bad morrissey is a piece of shit

I didn't totally hate it. Started strong, and some okay tracks. Still an insufferable slog to get through an entire album.

Ι can't stand this guy's moping. Stand-out: Everyday Is Like Sunday

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I baseline enjoy Morrissey, and I definitely like The Smiths...which is somewhat annoying because he's such a total jackass. That said, we've had ENOUGH Morrissey on this project! The Smiths albums were great. One solo Morrissey album was fine. But enough is enough at this point. This was Morrissey's first solo album, and it really doesn't hold a candle to anything The Smiths did. Don't get me wrong, his voice still has that haunting quality that is so fantastic, but the music here is just missing something without the backing of the rest of the Smiths band and style. I think my favorite part of the entire album was the end -- and I don't mean that in a (completely) cheeky way. "Margaret on the Guillotine", the final track, literally ends abruptly with the sound of a guillotine coming down, and I dug that.

Am I through all the Morrissey albums yet?

I do not like Morrisey

Great if you like Morrissey

I never really enjoyed The Smiths. This wasn't that different. I found his voice a bit annoying. The guitar work was ok though.

kinda boring

Really not that good. I don't get the obsession with Morrissey on this list. Most of the songs on here sound the same.

The sleepiest excuse for Britpop; I don't get the hype around this album. Morrisey's vocals are good, but almost too smooth.

veteran by jpegmafia, track 16

In general, I find Morrissey to be a little on the whiny side, and this didn't do anything to quell that thought pattern.... I could listen to if it I didn't have a choice, but I definitely wouldn't seek it out of my own accord.

het ene oor in, het andere uit... maar mss toch zijn beste...2 sterren

missing the johnny marr sparkle

The first Morrissey/Smiths thing I’ve listened to that was just kinda bad, as opposed to abject garbage.

Once again, we have to set aside Morrissey's toxic personality (we'll get back to that) and just focus on the music. As his first solo effort, one really can't help but compare it to The Smiths, which doesn't do him many favors. The absense of Johnny Marr is felt strongly here. Longtime Smiths engineer Stephen Street takes over Marr's music writing here and it's ok and fits the vocals well enough. But honestly, imagine for a moment this album existing without Morrissey's voice and celebrity attached to it. Who besides the most hardcore music fanatics would have heard it? Again, it's not bad and even has a few tracks that I really liked, like Late Night, Maudlin Street'. It's just not quite strong enough to stand up on its own. Back to Morrissey, he obviously has a distinct voice, which people love or hate. I don't mind the sound, but we already have The Smiths albums, which work so much better. Add to that the constant reminder that Morrissey is a right wing extremist and it's hard to put with only a decent output. At the time, we might have had some plausible deniability, but songs like 'Bengali in Platforms' really hit differently now that we now clearly where his politics are. I put up with it (albeit with some discomfort) to hear Johnny Marr. Otherwise, life it too short.

It was fine.

No me ha gustado

I can see why my HS girlfriend was such a fan. Not for me though. Musically there are a few interesting bits. Overall it all sounds similar to me. A little monotonous and nothing stands out.

2.4 I once went to a Morrissey-themed bar in Vancouver. I wasn't planning on it but stumbled in there. It was nice enough. Needless to say, that bar owner was probably a big fan. Id rather go to Johnny Marr bar. Suedehead was the standout on the album for me, everything else blended together.

Music okay, singing very tedious.

Still don’t get it ! It sounds like every other Morrissey album we’ve been subjected to. It doesn’t hurt my ears but also doesn’t raise my spirit like music could. No thanks 2*

Everyday is Like Sunday and Suedehead are great songs. I also enjoyed Margaret on the Guillotine (but that song ending?) Otherwise, though, this album is shockingly mediocre.

It's Morrissey. So it's really good. but also all the same.

Why is this man hated so much? He had some "radical" ideas about preserving British culture? Look at England now, 3rd world country after waves and waves of imports. Your women can no longer comfortably walk the streets. Hope you're all happy, whilst still thumbing your nose at someone who saw it coming. Thanks for trying, Morrissey. Your music is terrible though.

This was ok. I don’t really like morrisey but tried to not let that get in the way of me enjoying the album. Despite this it felt quite boring and uninspired. I did like every day is like sunday though

Average apart from suedehead and everyday

Its fine. He is, sadly, talented.

Smiths without Johnny = Morrissey. Not great.

alsatian cousin weissi nöd wases heisst aber de song isch no cool. aso find am morrissey sini stimm über längeri ziit ahstrengend aber er cha ebe scho texte. chline ma was jetz uuh cooli chords. bengali in platforms findi chli langwilig. angel angel au? late night maudlin street isch etz au nöd woow. schöni gitarre jo. aber jäääh. suedehead gurkt mi au chli aah. jo sneal intoy rooom to read my diary. scho pretty gitarre aber bewegt mi etz nuuuuull treat me like a human bean tönt andersch mega so kassette und kaputt? sind da mini chopfhörer? ok nai s isch de song.

Would I listen to it again: no Is it a no-skip album: no Do I like it: Meh.* * Glad I don't like it more. He is such an awful person

Like 2 singles, some filler, on humorous ode to the execution if Margaret Thatcher and one song that manages to be paternalistically and pettily xenophobic at the same time. Would probably be 3 stars, but I'm knocking it 1 for Morrissey being a racist fascist.

Proof the Smiths weren't holding Morrissey back.

Well fuck Morrissey, but this wasn’t terrible. 2.5 stars.

Boring

Bit of a boring smiths album

“Viva Hate” sounds about right for Morrissey. He seems to thrive on hate, and he inspires my… well, let’s just say strong dislike. Don’t need to reduce myself to his level. Because Morrissey is tolerable in the right small doses. For instance, “Every Day is Like Sunday” is when it works. “Suedehead” also has a great intro and vibe. Hate is too strong a term for me. Viva strong dislike.

Whiny and diary-driven stuff. Smiths songs are more palatable for me than this solo endeavor.

As usual, Morrissey just does nothing for me. There is no denying that he is a clever lyricist. He is absolutely distinct and sounds like no one else. He just annoys me.

Lyrics are interesting and the music is alright, but this guy's voice could put a crackhead to sleep.

I mean, it's a Morrissey album titled 'Viva Hate'. We should have known Mozza's descent into right wing gammonism was inevitable as long ago as 1988. Knowing what we know now, 'Bengali in Platforms' unambiguously expresses anti-immigration sentiments. Given that this is a theme that appears on the album, you can't really separate the art from the artist's views, which is a shame as its in many ways a really good album and perhaps his best post-Smiths work that I've heard. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Everyday Is Like Sunday Date listened: 30/04/24

Honestly, Morrissey is very over rated and very under whelming. Yes, he was in the Smith's. But those days are gone. And I just don't care. He's not a great vocalist. And from what I gather, he's a bit of a pick. The last part doesn't away my opinion on him. Just saying like it is. The music is great in this album. It's the only reason why I didn't stab my ears. I'm definitely over exaggerating. But Morrissey just isn't a good vocalist. Didn't pay too close to the lyrics because I only really cared about the instruments.

Good lord Morrissey is tiresome.

I like every days like sunday but that's it. Talented ..yes, talented enough to excuse his questionable personality and beliefs? No.

Ugh I have to perform dialectics to like this, but part of me really does like it, it's solid and all, but fuck Morrissey.

I did not like this album at all. I thought most of it was the most wallowing nothing of an album I've listened to and I really dread the fact there's three more of this guy's solo stuff. This entire album reminds me of a Jimmy Carr special: boring, tedious, and about as "edgy" as a marshmallow. It's saved from a one because the instrumentation is nice but that's all I can give.

Morrissey? More like Snorrissey amirite? I just get kind of bored with his albums. A lot of the songs seem to be a bit of a downer and if I was unhappy being alone I'd probably relate a little more, but meh. It's just not all that interesting to me. Favorite track "you're going to need someone on your side" 2/5

Didn't mind most songs, very monotonous.

not my thing... if I wanted something like this, I'd listen to the Cure instead

Fucking Morrissey. His work with The Smiths always washed right over me and left me feeling let down and indifferent, with some exceptions for the truly excellent songs. This album is much the same. I think it's a combination of his vocal delivery, the arrangements, and his general ear for melody. He's also a fascist. Fuck this guy. Fuck Morrissey all my homies hate Morrissey Highlights: Suedehead, Margaret on the Guillotine (at least he had the decency back in the day of being anti-Thatcher, an impossibly low bar)

Ärsyttävä ääni ja joutavaa muniin puhaltelua

Meni aika ohi äkkiä. Ei vakuuttanut, niin ei haitannutkaan

Im very unfamiliar with Morrissey sn what he said or did. All i really have to go by is his work, and idk, I just find it so whiney. That's the general feeling I get from it.

Ok, my first playthrough was some sort of bonus track version, and 1 hour 10 minutes of this was a bit of a slog. The album proper is a more manageable 42 minutes. Hmmmm, there's less of The Smiths to this than "Vauxhall And I", the other Morrissey solo album I've had from the list so far, which makes sense as this came later. Hmmmm, not a lot of enthusiasm to muster on this one. Fave track - well, just from the sound of it "Bengali in Platforms" caught my ear, but upon seeing the title and knowing Morrissey is a racist twat, I checked the lyrics and it's immediately poisoned. So, "I Don't Mind If You Forget Me" takes the title, then. Probably deserves 3 stars, but minus 1 for the prat tax. 😒

meh, bolji je bio u smithsima

EI SAATANA BENGALEITÄ*A TÄNNE!!!! - sanoo morissey... heh... perus sammakkokurkku engilshman, nielaseppa se viimeinen mokkapala... tarvi alkaa laulaa luu kurkussa... we must try to preserve the integrity of 1,001 rating system. .. ei ole integrityä--- liian väghän britainnia indie.. morrisey height 1.8m... lyhyt.. turpaan tollasia... pari hyvää biisiä. everyday is like sunday

It was passable, some of it was interesting to listen to but most of it was pretty boring. A lot of the songs sounded similar. I didn't really care for it

ugh... tried to put my personal feelings about morrissey away to enjoy this, which proved to be difficult. the smiths are better, morrissey's ego is just too big.

Morrissey has a wonderful voice, too bad he's singing Morrissey lyrics. I imagine Morrissey is insufferable in a one on one situation. Yesterday was a Smith's album, thank God there's no loose rope and an attic available. Three stars, only because of the voice. There is no need to listen to this again, make it two stars. I did like the abrupt ending. I read the entry in the book and re-listened to Suedehead, it is jangly and entertaining, but still a two. The book people love Morrissey.

It was a'ight

Not a fan of Morrissey’s music in general but I appreciated the line “rejection is one thing but rejection from a fool is cruel”

I listened to this whole dumb thing and yes I do deserve a medal. I listened to this album on youtube and they showed the video for "Suedehead" instead of just the song. It's the most pretentious thing I've ever seen. Garbage.
