Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Und nicht in a good way.
i get that it's meant to be minimal but it just comes off as kinda boring. the sax playing is definitely the highlight here, but that's it. could really benefit from more percussion to add texture to the sound (a snare played with brush drumsticks would elevate this album 10x)
Meh.
Refreshing and relaxing, but perhaps a bit too relaxing. Started off strong with The Girl from Ipanema, but the rest of the record flew by without making too much of an impression, good or bad.
Elevator music
Not tremendously into the jazz/bossa nova stuff. That being said, this is okay. I think it's perfectly pleasant background noise. I just can't help that feeling of "this would play during cocktail hour" or "this would play in an elevator." Perhaps not the best way to look at it, but it's definitely what my mind defaults to. It's a bit boring to me. I think you'd love this if you liked jazz! I just don't personally.
I wouldn't mind at all if it was playing at a bar or something. If my friend put it on though I'd tell them to turn it the fuck off. It feels like it wants to be laid back and relaxing but the vocals are so grating it hits a weird middle ground where it's just nothing. I keep coming back to find why it's so popular but everytime it just feels like sitting around and waiting to die in a care home. Thank god for the saxophone though. Everytime I was nodding off it blasted my ears and woke me up.
Soundtrack to a 1970s keys party
I almost fell asleep at work listening to this
Bossa-no-no. Bit of a snooze-fest. Two stars.
Desafinado The girl from Ipanema So Danco Samba Corcovado
The Girl From Ipanema Desafinando Corcovado
Laid back cheesy Jazz, do I have to like it because its not English... nope. Boring.
3/10
This one wasn't as interesting as the album prior. I am not sure why. It just didn't work as well in my opinion. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good. The backing band wasn't as interesting either. This felt more like elevator music than the last one. Liked Songs: "Doralice" , "Só Danço Samba" ,"The Girl From Ipanema" , "Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)"
it’s okay
I don't love jazz. Portugués
Bossa nova is not really my scene. Happy enough to have it in the background for a themed dinner party but not for my general listening pleasure I’m afraid
Album was pleasant background noise. Entire thing sounded the same.
This is music you’d expect to hear when at a fancy restaurant. Brings a nice calming ambience, with impactful powerful grooves & a nice laid back approach to the vocals, keeping the overall vibe of the album very nice & chilled. Still not sure why the albums not called Getz/ Gilberto/ Jobim. Jobim features on pretty much all the album don’t understand why he didn’t get his name on the title. All the instruments compliments each other in such an interesting way. You have Gilberto’s nice guitar chords playing steady repetitive chords, as Getz’s gets to showcase what an impressive saxophonist he is. Jobin adding his gentle piano chords which flows through every track he’s included in. The voice of Astrud Gilberto, who I’m going to presume is the wife/ family member of the guitarist, is so gentle and unique. It fits this bossa nova sound very well, in fact I’d have liked to hear more of it. I understand the appeal of this album, and really enjoyed the introduction to bossa nova. However it’s just not something I will revisit that often so I think that reflects harshly in my rating. I did enjoy it as something different though. So much respect for it being the first non-American album to win Album of the year, that’s very cool and I can totally see why. Favourite tracks are: ‘The Girl From Ipanema’, ‘Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)’, ‘O Grande Amor’.
Not for me. Smug French saxophone. Listenable though but not ideal
This may be a good example of bossa nova music, but man this was a chore to get through. It was even quite pleasant in parts but just found it so incredibly boring. Music to put yourself to sleep to.
I LOVE THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA. Thats all though
not much to say on this, i put it on the work speaker because i could only listen to this as background noise really. Forgot it was playing sometimes and didn't care to listen proeprly.
4 - BAD
Hard listen when immediately following Alice and Chains
Inoffensive, would be good for a lift/shop/hold music
Mitä ehmettiä näitä tulee monta putkeen
Jazz is OK but bossa nova is very far from my taste. Sounds brilliant and, listening objectively, it is a very good album.
Dineermuziek pur sang
Chill samba album. 4/10
Not my kind music
No interest
4. nice bossa nova + girl from ipanema
Very pleasant and chilled late night background cocktail lounge music. Doesn't get my juices flowing but its not going to make any ears bleed.
A case where over-saturation and muzak-ification has pretty much ruined this for me. It’s pleasant, the guitar chords are interesting, but it’s just a bit nauseating and boring.
Mid and the vocals suck. Only good one is the first song.
It was nice and smooth but maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for it. It feels like I should like this more than I did but it just felt fine
It’s pleasant and easy to listen to. Not my favorite and it was just background noise
Pleasant instrumentation. Might prefer without the vocals. Otherwise would be a good focus or chill background album.
It was cool at first but then I got bored of it pretty quickly. Bossanova is just too repetitive for my liking and all the songs just start to blend together.
Elevator music
First two songs were good, got boring after that. Just smooth elevator music and enjoyable vocals
It’s well recorded and has some good playing. If you like chill background music this is cool, I find bossa nova dull and irredeemably repetitive though. 34 minutes that feels like and hour and a half.
p64. 1963. 2 stars. Dreary Latin jazz. Saved from 1 star by "The Girl From Ipanema" (45rpm single version, not the droning album version) and the fabulously named drummer, Milton Banana.
A cosy album, easy listening. Unsure why two tracks are repeated.
If we talk about great background music this is really great one.
Neither jazz nor bossa nova are my kinda music, but since the album opened with a track that is familiar in so many ways, I tried to give it a try, beyond just few feels. It melted into background music, few pretty bits here and there, but mostly I was awakened from my stupor by thinking "this is annoying" and finally gave up midway through the second to last song.
My god this was so boring. Like elevator music (I actually think some of this literally is elevator music). For me this genre is very "you've heard one, you've heard them all." It's not unbearable, but really, really dull.
It's fine - I'd rather just have the music, but that's just me. Never a bit fan of jazz singing.
I love bossa nova and Jobim, to be honest when I saw this album pop-up, I couldn't believe. It was a impossible miracle, and it hit me when I didn't expect. Even though I love bossa nova really much, this album is not really for me. I love it when it has less vocals, and sometimes the instruments supresses the vocals or the other instruments so it sounds weird. This album probably was pretty big milestone for bossa nova world and it's important, and even though I can understand that, not for me.
Like listening to the Wii Shopping Channel theme for half an hour, but annoying
Jazz...soft, silky bossa nova jazz, with vocals and some piano, too. Bad recipe for me. I mean, it doesn't suck, I would just never choose to listen to it.
The girl from Ipanema is a classic.
3/10
Not a Bossa Nova fan. 4/10
Listened too easy I'm just not a jazz person yet
1,7/5
Super vibes my, his whispery singing makes my brain itch a bit. The woman’s voice is beautiful. The music is beautiful, it’s just not really my thing and I probably wouldn’t reach for this album again.
It was okay background music but not something I would go back to
too much bossa nova in this list
Was that the same song 10 times?
Not a fan of bossa nova
Not my thing
Muzak, but in Portuguese.
👀, boring!
Girl From Ipanema will be stuck in my head for weeks, and not in a good way. In a "Don't Stop Believin" kind of way.
nope, not my style.
It’s smooth, it’s kinda fun. It’s also something I’ll never listen to again.
Feels a bit hollow - I do like easy listening and bossa nova but this feels a bit less than the sum of its parts
Boring album
Ok
A bit boring and forgettable.
Can appreciate the musicianship. Not my thing though.
This was ok in small doses for me. Gets very boring after listening to a few songs in a row. They all bleed together and sound the same without much going on. Cool for background music
What a strange man
Like a smoky Brazilian lounge, with a cool cat in a fedora on the sax.
I have complex feelings about this album. The ripples of this release are still felt in music made today. Some of my favorite records are infused with the Bossa nova sound that this album pioneered. During my listens, I did enjoy having it on and felt like it blended in to the background seamlessly. But that seamlessness turned out to be one of my biggest issues here. I hate to say it, but I found this album quite boring. Aside from the iconic first track ("The Girl From Ipanema"), all of the songs seemed to run into each other without much ado. I know it was intended to be easy listening, and it was easy. The problem is that it wasn't much else. Even though it's an important and extremely well-done piece of work, I just don't think this album is for me. It left me feeling a bit unsatisfied, like it was a beautiful setup for a story that said nothing.
I guess not bad ...
„The Girl from Ipanema“ is nice. But the rest is just to repetetive for me :(
Really well executed. Great musicianship. Still made me feel like I was waiting for the Dentist.
quite relaxing, but mood dependant
Years ago, I started working for a department store that was on the verge of being bought out by a competitor. The store played bad covers of music like this. Thinking back, I'm not surprised they were getting bought out. These are not bad songs, but hearing Corcovado again takes me back to the outdated attempts at sophistication at that store.
More like bossa no-thank you. It's fine, very much not my style. It's so background music, that I forgot I was listening to something
Jazz really isn't my favorite. This would be ok in the background. Not something I would be drawn to otherwise.
Fine. A bit boring, but fine. Good background music for a restaurant I suppose.
Are these ALL from the 60s 😡 This is just several versions of the girl from Ipanema, luckily just 37 mins album.
this is one of those albums that feels like a postcard from somewhere warm and elegant, but i never quite arrived there myself. it’s beautiful, but i couldn’t help feeling like i was standing outside the party, watching through the window with a drink i didn’t order. i don’t listen to a lot of bossa nova, so maybe this is just a genre mismatch. i’m used to albums where more things happen, where tension builds, where songs break or swell or change shape. this doesn’t really do that. it just kind of floats. it's polite. the melodies are soft, the guitar is lovely, and the saxophone slides through like it’s trying not to wake you up. it’s genuinely relaxing, but sometimes that also feels like a long exhale with nothing to anchor it.i get why this album is iconic. i really do. “The Girl From Ipanema” is gorgeous and completely deserved its immortality. Astrud Gilberto’s voice is one of those voices that doesn’t try too hard and still gets under your skin. João’s playing is intricate but effortless. Getz is Getz. and yet, by the halfway mark, i caught myself zoning out. again: maybe that's me, not the music.
not my taste
The Girl from Ipanema is a banger
Ah, my least favourite genré, with a lot of saxophone, an instrument I mostly hate. And they're singing in portuguese, a language I find unpleasant. Skip.
Every single one a bossa. No progression to this album at all. Listen to one, try to remember what commercial it was in. Then you do t have to spend any more time because they are all the same
Might be good but I just don't like jazz. 2 stars or D for me.
Pleasant background music, but I have to rate the album as an active listening experience.
Jaaaaazzzz…nice! Not my cup of tea.
The Girl from Ipanema has gotten some TikTok traction as well. Album was fine not bad but not for me. 5.1/10
it was okay
nye, no l'he acabat pero the girl from ipalama esta guai
Forgettable
It was OK. 2/5
Jazz again
Another jazz album that didn't do a lot for me. I don't think it was bad, I just can't say I enjoyed it all that much. It was subdued and quiet, which I liked better than it being overly jazz-tastic. But, it also just kind of blended into the background. It sounded like something that would be playing at a cafe in the morning. That is good in its niche, but isn't really something I like more than that. I did like Girl from Ipanema, which is obviously a very famous song and I had heard before. I don't know that the other tracks were very memorable. It's also not an album I see myself listening to again. Unfortunately I think this is another casualty of my lack of interest in the genre. For me it was fine, but not all that good. Overall: 2.2/5
Fine. Every tune basically sounds the same to me.
Not much for jazz/lounge music
Its fine.
Just don't like Jazz, man. 2 stars.
5/10 This is supposedly the definitive bossa nova album and I’ve enjoyed the couple I’ve had already. But, like them, this doesn’t get me going properly. Well played, well sung, nice vibes. But this is background music not foreground music. Ultimately a little boring. Best: Garota de Ipanema
couldn't tell you where the first song ended or the second song began. felt like one long soothing song.
Oude jazz
Jazz.
Perfect dinner party music
Songs than my Nan liked
I do appreciate a bossa nova beat, but the clipped and close vocals are off-putting and prevented me from fully enjoying the music. Highlight: Corcovado
Today in jazz music anyone can enjoy... This was fine if you like easy listening jazz stuff. It's nothing challenging or impressive, but apparently selling a bunch of units is sufficient to get anything on this list.
Weirdly I got the pixies bossanova yesterday then the real thing today. This was pleasant but not something I’m likely to listen to.
As a few before me have noted, this is a pleasant but otherwise uneventful elevator ride.
Pleasant, talented, bit dull.
I feel like I've read, "[x] is considered the record that popularized bossa nova worldwide" at least three times so far throughout this journey. Also, I'm not sure what it is, but bossa nova always strikes me as music for toddlers - due to its gentleness, not lack of intellectual prowess! Anyway, this was a subdued and relaxing listen, though dull for my taste. Listened to: at 5MW. Favorite tracks: Corcovado
I honestly can’t even remember this I was just too excited for Alice in chains, sorry stan
So chilled but can't see myself playing it again
Pleasant enough but maybe a little low key for anything but background music. (19 known/31 new)
It's a decent jazz album to end the week. I liked the two singles. However, I've heard better jazz albums before. Also, I'm not too keen on bossa nova. All of the songs are nearly the exact same. 2 stars for "Getz/Gilberto".
This album is fine but at the end of the day I find this style to be pretty boring. It’s produced well enough, and it’s executed well, but it’s not really my bag baby.
Very pleasant to listen to. I particularly enjoy the sax. It ultimately feels a bit dated, and with so many non-English lyrics I found it a bit challenging to connect with it. Came very close to 3 stars, but because I didn't connect to any single song I'm rounding down.
2/5. It's elevator music, but not bad.
As I was listening to this album my partner walks in and asks "Are you on hold? " While Girl From Ipanema is a classic, much of the album does feel like it should be interrupted by a digital voice telling me that my call is important and to please stay on the line. After the anxiety inducing album from yesterday (New Forms) this was actually very welcoming.
Like the jazz stuff, but bossa nova is not the most exciting music to be honest.
Kicking off with atrocious vocals was a choice; I can see why covers fared far better. I don’t hate this record, but it’s mildly irritating at best.
I have no idea what this is. Back ground dinner music for Don Draper or the soundtrack to a hard boiled private eye in the back of a cab in the pouring rain. I’m sure it’s great but not for me.
Girl from Ipanema is a catchy and brilliant track perfect for many movie soundtracks But jazz can go fuck itself
I guess some elevator music is better than others but I just can't see myself choosing to come and listen to this other than to have pleasant background noise rather than silence. Just not my thing but nice enough and inoffensive.
A perfectly pleasant listen, but nothing more. A great album for a hotel lobby, or a restaurant that's trying to be cool but not trying too hard. 2/5.
"The Girl from Ipanema" is a great song, the rest of the music is listenable, background music. 2.5/5
pretty repetitive with the trumpet or wtv but overall pretty good, chill music. i imagine myself in a coffee shop
Great album not my jam. Oddly goes well with MIA
Just not my thing. Not saying this is a bad album but light piano and sax is not for me.
Dull, waify hotel café jazz album which feels like the same cafe mocha served over and over. Might be ok in said café.
2 finished listening 12/13
The only song i enjoyed was "Desafinado". The rest felt like it was the same song. Too simple; a relaxing album only.
Nice and mellow. Same repetitions ended up putting me off. Didn’t really enjoy Gilberto’s spoken lyrics. Enjoyed looking up some information about the album.
Very pleasant and chilled late night background cocktail lounge music. Doesn't get my juices flowing but its not going to make any ears bleed.
Some enchanting music being played on this album, wish I could tell you which instruments they were but nevertheless they sounded wonderful. I imagine this kind of music would be great to listen to live at some bar. Very similar to jazz music for me, in the sense that I like what I’m hearing but I have no idea what I’m hearing and again much better enjoyed live. Unfortunately I wasn’t at a jazz bar on Spanish night and I did get quite bored listening towards the end due to me not knowing what I was hearing. The fact that it was a short album half made up for the pitfalls, if I could I would’ve given it a 2.5
Wanted to write a more thorough review for this. Felt a bit like scrooge when he gets dragged about by that big fat ghost, to look at people having a good time. I felt like I half understood the music and kind of liked it at points, but quickly realised it wasn't for me.. I was the ghost at the musical feast. The girl from Ipanema has given me earworms- having been thrust onto the album twice, and now I feel like I'm stuck in some weird elevator/Wii Sports menu loop, with this soft, playful and utterly repetitive jazz music eating away at my brain. It's nice music, like the sort of music you'd hear at a classic Spanish seafood restaurant. A little band of moustachioed men in the corner, playing what sounds like the same song, over and over again- because I'm too musically illiterate and foreign to understand it properly.. and that's not their fault. I'm happy to admit I shouldn't be in this restaurant at all. My blind date (who is absolutely bulkier than her carefully curated Tinder profile would suggest) has delusions of grandeur and wants to pay nearly 90 euros for what I can only assume is a prawns anus on some fig leaves. None of this is for me sadly, el burger and chips for this uncultured slob por favor.
I felt like i was stuck in a laundromat in some strange small town in america. This music seems like the perfect music to have playing live in the background when going on a classy expensive date with a woman who you're actually really interested in and who can hold a good conversation. Problem with that is that it's expensive and there isn't actually an interesting woman that can hold a good conversation that exists in real life. They're all in movies, reading scripts written by blokes who know what would be interesting conversation for a woman to have. Not bad music at all though. At times I felt Like Andrew Nayman, playing in a great band but constantly ready for Fletcher to dash a chair at my head or verbally abuse me. But I like that Whiplash alot, so it gives it extra points. Side note - a bloke wrote that movie too.
It was ok. The music became background noise after a couple of tracks.
I despise jazz, but this isn't too terrible, really.
I was not familiar with this album at all. Apparently this helped popularize Bossa Nova music. I have also learned that Bossa Nova music is like Samba music, but with more emphasis on melody rather than percussion. I appreciate the music and that it sounds like it is played well, but this album is not something I would listen to normally. My parents probably would have enjoyed it though.
Feeling a bit up and down this morning, don't know whether it's because I'm in a strange mood or because I have just spent 40 mins listening to lift music. It was OK but not what I would choose
Lounge tunes. Made me wanna put on a suit and smoke a cigarette but probably wouldn’t revisit.
The dry saxophone sound gave me chills in the worst way.
Nice muzak
..
Girl from ipanema rocks, and this was cool, but instrumental stuff like this is sort of unexciting to me mostly…
Sopivaa musiikkia lomaresortin kahvilassa soitettavaksi.
This is not the type of music I like.
Why do the words “bossa nova” conjure up images of Mambo number 5? Is Lou Bega’s seminal Mambo No. 5 the updated Girl From Impanema? Ehhhhh this is off to a rough start. Back up from the mic. Ahh the female vocals work way better here. And the saxophone is nice. It’s unfortunate that this is now the elevator song from movies, as I can’t say it’s bad. This is too happy. I would prefer to be able to understand the lyrics but I have yet to commit myself to learning English, let alone Portuguese so I’m flying blind with Doralice. The vocals do seem too happy but the music is nice. The vocals are too close. Is that a complaint I can have?? I’m not a huge vocal jazz fan. Anyway. Saxophone is nice, but it’s all so accessible and therefore, a little dull. Whispering singing. Terrible. Unedited lip smacking. Get back to the saxophone. Thank you. Yeah the singing doesn’t work. Now the female vocals are good-great. The English lyrics help my personal enjoyment as well. NOOOOO STAY OFF THE TRACK MAN. Somebody should’ve just said all his vocal tracks got lost and released the album without them. It’s talking off rhythm too close to the mic. This song is an instrumental which is better, but exposes another problem this album has. The guitar and percussion is stagnant and pretty much the exact same all the way through. He sounds like a shy high schooler afraid to sing at a school talent show. This one is a head scratcher. I like the overall tone and vibe of the album for the most part. I HATE the male vocals. The saxophone had a cool tone but the background instrumentation was lowest common denominator metronome music. The atmosphere can’t be denied, but the rest of it will leave my head before I’ve closed this tab. Lou Bega is rolling in his grave. 2-2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Girl from Impanema, Corcovado.
Brazilian music. Not for me
Not my thing. I guess it's probably fine if it is, but it just sounds like tiki bar background music to me. It all sounds pretty much the same, which is great if you just want bland background music while you're trying to chat up drunk, divorced cougars, I guess.
Some light jazz that I wouldn’t really pick
Felt wrong not being in an elevator for this
forgettable!
Fine just a bit boring
I wouldn't listen to this again as something to particularly listen to, but it would be great as an album to play while having a dinner party.
I don’t enjoy this kind of jazz.
Do all Brazilian albums in this list require at least two versions of "Girl from Ipanema"? Haven't Brazil produced anything other than elevator music?
Calm but boring
All these songs sound the same. Fine if you like it, boring if you don’t.
Smooth, jazzy, bossanova. It’s certainly a vibe. My main orientation to this album is obviously “the girl from ipanema” an office and grocery store staple. Looking past all of that, there is something seductive here. And the instrumentation is clearly virtuosic. Unfortunately, it’s not anything I’ll be coming back to any time soon.
It wasn't bad
Pleasant enough and reminds me very much of my holiday in Rio. Not one I would play often, though.
Doo-be, do-be-do...
If 'the girl from Ipanema' is an original then that gets it another star.
It's fine enough background music but washed over me
Listened Before? N Meh. More foreign language stuff. Good music so +1 but I'll pass. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: The Girl From Ipanema
Ah now. Did we not have the girl from Ipanema already????
just pleasant background noise. I won't be listening to this again though, unless it's in a film as background music
Mellow sax over light piano and the snare with brushes make for perfect background dinner music (and not much else.) Songs are pretty similar and dated - Getz/Gilberto comes in at (2.4*s)
This album has a vibe but a lot of it is the same and doesn't really have any teeth. Maybe I'll revisit when I don't have any either. Overall, it's a bit too snoozey and lackluster. The songs with the female vocalist are better but still missing something. The album is old and somehow it put that on display (the sax even sounded furry). I'll blow the dust off this one in 40 years, it probably sounds better through hearing aids anyway.
It was OK but reminded me of Mary Tyler Moore doing the dance scenes on the Dick vanDyke show when my parents watched it. I wouldn't ever choose this for myself.
I can appreciate it but not my thing
Just kinda meh. Every song sort of sounded similar. 2/5
Good background music I guess... Standout song: Corcovado
Elevator music
Getz/Gilberto Short review today. The Girl from Ipanema, it’s such a great song that most versions are good, and I do like the arrangement of this one, a pleasant listen. After that though it veers from pleasant but forgettable to plain forgettable. Nothing truly bad, but nothing truly good. I actually drifted off to sleep the 2nd time around. I’ll go 2 ⭐️⭐️
ok
Aight
No
I fell asleep listening to this, which is a first for the list. I'm not sure how far I got into it but had to start over the next day when I woke up. This is a pleasant album but not only does it have no bite, it has no teeth. The way this was recorded, especially the sax, makes this sound older than it actually is. Really not my thing.
I admittedly haven't listened past Girl From Ipanema previously. Doing so now, I don't feel as if I've missed out up to this point. I consider this a part of some sort of music appreciation class. It's important for it's importance. How that came to be, I'll never really understand. Sort of like reading Dickens now. So what?
This is very pleasant to listen to….but it’s all pretty much the same. Very easy going. I like the sparse arrangements, light background music to accompany whoever has the lead, voice or saxophone. Again with the sax, not always crazy about the sound. His tone sounds like it’s always leaking air - as if the sax’s throat won’t clear. But his choice of notes is spot on. I love that his improvising still has a nice melodic line to it. I preferred the other Stan Getz album, with Charlie Bird, but this would make nice dinner party music.
Ya like jazz?
So smooth and plinky-plonky that it becomes annoying
This is so serene I can barely pay attention to this. It's not bad, but I don't think I could even enjoy it as background music.
Not for me!
I understood Syd Barret's lyrics better. Is this guy singing in Portuguese? In any language Mr. Gilberto's voice is smooth and silky like a warm cocoa mocha. And so is his wife's. The whole album is smooth. But it's a little on the easy listening side for me and feels like the same cafe mocha served over and over. Can't just ONE song be a double espresso? I usually prefer my jazz: jumping, swinging, groovn or fucked up. But this is some of the best hold music that the 20th century has to offer. Your call is important to us. You are number (86) in the que. Please draw yourself a bubble bath and hold for the next available operator.
This was definitely jazzy bossa nova, I guess.
It’s got Girl From Ipanema but otherwise this is wallpaper
6/10
I should find out more about this album. I can recognise it's stature, maturity and importance but I just have no connection with this type of music at all. It's from a different generation and mentality. A lost time for me.
Nice to have on in the background, but I'd probably enjoy it a lot more if they lost the vocals.
No. Just no. 70s stereo with vocal in one ear. Sounds like a porn movie.
It’s jazz alright. Not my style
Klein, unauffällig, jazzy. Girl from Ipanema hat man mal gehört.
Elevator music: the album.
Somebody said yesterday’s was elevator music but this is elevator music frfr. Girl from Ipanema is a classic but it doesn’t save the album from being boring. 4.5/10
good for studying. i wouldn’t just listen to this though so it gets a 2
Not really my style of music but I did like the classic song The Girl From Ipanema.
girl from ipanema
Sleepy bedroom bossanova Getz and Gilberto are great but Jobim’s songs all sound the same.
Not for me. 2⭐️
Wow, I really don't like this genre of music. The whole album feels like I am trapped in the lounge of a hotel. I understand how some people like this music, but I rarely, if ever, had the desire to listen to bossa nova. This album just proves that I still don't like listening to it. Favorite Song(s): N/A
A boring record that won't offend your 75 year old wife at dinner
Jazzy, dancy thingy. Not my jam
Was definitely different and enjoyed some of it.
nms
Yeah influential album whatever. girl from impanena is pretty good, rest is meh i did not enjoy
I think I would have a very different opinion of this album if I'd been listening in the cold UK. As it was I was listening in lovely warm sunshine which suited the music. Having said that I wouldn't rate it that highly. A listenable low 3* ?
Good background music.
I really don’t know what to write… Saxophone comes to mind
Pleasant enough, but not something id seek out
Jazz classic - but then too elevator music for me
back ground music
Groovy, jazzy, smooth music. There is a reason that this style is the quintessential “elevator music.” It’s very mellow and calming but not thing really reaches out and grabs ya. Girl From Ipanima is great but still bears the burden of being “elevator music.” Will listen as background. Nothing too exciting on this album.
All in spanish, pretty and jazzy. Good chill background music. 4/10
Ok
Not really into jazz with words, apparently.
Music for people who are good at dancing. I am not good at dancing.
Not my thing. Nice background music
I've heard of one song, the rest were not my style.
2.5
More jazzy world music, from Brazil. Does contain the best (for me) version of The Girl from Ipanema. I've had world music overload, there's a little too much on the list for my tastes.
Shmeh
Alright light listening music for work
I don't know enough about Jazz (or anything at all really) to appreciate this album or write anything remotely insightful or intelligent about it. When The Girl from Ipanema started playing I thought "oh, they covered that song." I really hope these reviews can't be seen publicly ....
a hangja számomra elviselhetetlen, a muzsika viszont chill
too easy listening for my taste. probably not the fault of the musicians of this album, its just what it is strong 2
2.5 not bad, just not for me.
Aivan hyvä. Rauhallista pimputtelua.
Did anyone else think the saxophone was way too loud in the mix? The Girl From Ipanema and Corcovado are classics though.
I know this is good music just not my style.
Laivamusaa viimesen päälle. Ei selkeää otepintaa ja soi sujuvasti taustalla. Vaikea antaa enempää kuin 2*
Really chill and i think mostly background music. Also can't really distinguish between the different bossanova songs. Kinda sounds all the same.
It’s good, just a little too “elevator music” for my tastes.
What
When you go to a shitty gala and they hire a shitty band to play the music while you eat... this is what you get. I think there are better Getz albums that could have been picked to show off the improvisation he was known for with this sax. Take the tracks O Grande Amor and Vivo Sonhando. These are brilliant and show off Getz's skill with the sax, but everything else really limits this man's brilliance on this album and that is a shame.
Nice and smooth, should be listened to in a posh hotel foyer! All tracks very similar on account of the need for a sax and guitar solo
nice enough to have on in the background without anything particularly to note musically - wouldn't bother again
Bossa nova? More like bossa no-thanks, amirite? Talk about a boring genre. It's just utterly empty of energy. Just... flaccid saxophones, lazy guitars, and near-comatose vocals all day long. Seriously, being a bossa nova drummer has to be the most boring gig in music. And don't get me started on the obnoxious stereo mix. Almost everything is hard-panned and the mix is unbalanced. And, at times the bass completely overdrives the mic. Which is WILD considering how apathetic the bass player seems to be about the gig. It's not like he's digging in going hard. He's not even paying attention. And neither was the engineer, I guess... No, this isn't a great listening experience. Not on any level, really.
enjoyed the swingy swings
No issues with this album at all. I can't say I'll ever revisit it, but it was enjoyable enough and short. Girl From Impania is the highlight. A high TWO
Nice elevator music
Okey dokey
When he started singing he sounded like a perv. Not really my bag. Too MOR
I don't know that much about jazz so it's harder to gage, but in general it was alright
Stan and Joao's covers are a little slow for me - a little too subdued and sleepy. The album is mostly known for "The Girl from Ipanema" - the shorter, all-English version that sold in the US as a single (vocals by Astrud Gilberto, Joao's wife at the time) has a bit more pep to it.
smoother than a veeted testicle.
It’s ok I suppose. I see this pop up on a lot of vinyl groups I’m in so it’s obviously one that lots of folk love (either that or it’s somehow become known as a MUST have on vinyl for some reason and people buy it because they think they should have it?) Either way, it wasn’t my bag baby.
Ok. Similar to some other Brazilian samba type music I’ve listened to before, but have to be in the mood.
FFS, another bossa nova album? No. I refuse. Giving it a 2 and moving on.
WTF is up with all the bossa nova albums?! It's so irritating. Like I mentioned before, there are international albums that deserve attention. Boooo!
Can we just say no to the Bossa Nova
I couldn't really get into this. Wanted to like it but every song sounded exactly the same. 2.5 stars
As albums go, it's fairly one-note. It's more like one song played 10 times. I guess if you like 'The Girl From Ipanema', then you're really going to enjoy this.
I’m not a jazz girl.
its a mid
Great coffee shop music
Not a fan of Bossa Nova in general. I found the guitar and vocals quite boring. I did enjoy the sax playing though.
The musicians show impressive restraint, but to be honest most of the Latin music I’ve fallen for on this list has a bit more vim and vigour to it. I was charmed at first but it quickly became indistinguishable from any old smooth background jazz. This would probably be the perfect soundtrack to a romantic candlelit dinner on a balmy evening in a South American restaurant. Unfortunately that’s not a situation I find myself in very often.
Me, the heartless fuck, the absolute buffoon, found this album to be very boring. I'm very rarely in the mood to listen to some bossa nova, and this day was no different. I can't even say this is "elevator music" as a gotcha, since "The Girl from Ipanema" is literally the cliché elevator music they use in movies. It's also the best song on the album and the only one that I can recall.
Pure wallpaper - and nothing more
I'm trying to avoid making any major life decisions that would lead me down a path that ends in appreciating bossa nova. Best track: Girl from Ipanema, I guess
Really not my thang, cat! I get how people dig this kind of thing though.
I wanted to like this a lot more than I did - because it's a legit classic in jazz circles. I guess I'm not into bossa nova...
I got through it fine. Soundtrack to some 60s romantic comedy. Nothing I would ever pick to listen to again though.
I liked the jazz-like sound, though it's not something I'd normally listen to. Portuguese is a nice language and it was really interesting to listen to it in music.
Not my thing.
Just not my taste
Pleasant enough I suppose, but not my bag
