Bossa nova is such a niche genre, not quite sure how I feel about it. Enjoy it in short bursts like this but it has such a particular sound that most songs sound the same. Definitely heard girl from Ipanema before and a few others were recognisable. Like jazz I think it's a music for the right setting and not something I would just pick up and listen to on the commute.

I quite liked this, it was pretty relaxing. It had nice jazzy beats throughout and kept at a good pace. Nothing overstayed its welcome like traditional Jazz seems to. None of the tracks partifcularly stood out of me but I did enjoy "The Girl from Ipanema".

I enjoyed this much more than the other jazz records we've had recently. Not sure if I'll be going back to it too regularly, but was nice in the background. I bet this is played in loads of restaurants and cafes.

Probably shouldn't have listened to right after Judas Priest. Its ok maybe could be setbreak music but it's all the same song. Would make fine music for that sophisticated cocktail party I'm never having

Blind album and artist. I do not know what to think of this album but it feels repetitive and maybe it's cause the non-english lyrics? It sounds great but I'm not feeling it.

The first foreign, non-english album to pop up on this list for me. Ah, "The girl from Ipanema", THE Bossa Nova song; pretty sure this song single-handedly brought ez listening to America. Crazy how cafe music hasn't really evolved much since its inception; this album is from 1964 but sounds like I would hear it in 2023 starbucks, and then think it was written the year before, and be none the wiser. This statement could definitely be viewed positively, making the inference that the album has a 'timeless' attribute to it. Was enjoyable having this on as easy listening to start my work day, drinking some coffee and crawling through work. Again, like 90% of the music on this list probably, I don't love it, don't hate it, would listen to it with no issues if it was in front of me, but wouldn't go out of the way to find it.

Don't listen if you need coffee. Hasn't made me like jazz. Day 1 but I am still in a rut about known songs being easier for me to actually pay attention to. Realized I've been pronounce Ipanema incorrectly. Sax gets murkier in some of these songs (O Grande Amor?) than I have noticed before.

I mean, wow. I thought I was gonna hate this album after the first 30 seconds, but it is so chill. Great cooking music.

Slightly on the dull side, but not offensive. I think I could have listened to the whole album without listening to it. 2.5*

Delightfully sunny and positive sounding samba. The Portuguese language has an interesting cadence - the natural rhythm of romance languages but with some more slurred and softened consonants. It works well with the music here. Girl from Ipanema of course is the well-known jewel in the crown here.

this album blows. get it? anyway, it's an album that reminds me what it was like shopping at Pottery Barn. When that was a thing. Just lively enough to be adventurous, but not to the point of being distracting.

Great way to start the day. I was like, who is Stan Getz, and then the first song kicked off a mood. Easy, breezy and full of chill vibes all day.

I love it. The great thing about this system of rating albums is it introduces you to something you already know; i have probably heard The Girl from Ipanema 5 times in Television on the radio, but now i can put names to faces, and listen to it repeatedly, not just holding shazam up to season twelve of the simpsons or whatever. Easy listening, with a relaxed and unpunishing vibe, for hot summer days.

Really chill

Nice jazz, really chill, but the mumbling at the start wasn’t great.

It gets a little bit repetitive, but I feel that's why it's so charming. Good across the board.

Smooth elevator jazz

This is one of the best background working albums ever made. That's not a slight, just that it does its thing and if you dip out for 5 minutes that's ok, they're grooving and ready for your return.

Relaxing music, very classic, but the songs don’t vary enough to make the album as a while interesting.

Album 101 of 1001 Getz / Gilberto - Stan Gets & João Gilberto Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Girl from Ipanema Great album for either relaxing or going about your business as you listen. Soothing, Relaxing, Pleasant...so many adjectives fit. It also won Album of the Year in1965, the year of my birth. That gets a few points.

This was incredibly easy to listen to and as smooth as butter. The intersection of jazz and samba styles is a great intersection, in my opinion. I don't really have any notes for this album, other than that it was quite a pleasant listen.

Another apposite selection. Astrud Gilberto dies and the next day we get this. Bossa nova is a type of jazz I can tolerate. Girl from Ipanema is a great tune. The songs do all tend to blend into each other but it’s very pleasant background music. I will always remember being on a cruise round Norway where the band played Girl from Ipanema seemingly every day on the observation deck. Seemed a bit out of place at the time but it was a very chilled vibe!

Not sure if Astrud Gilberto's recent death was the reason this got served (could be coincidence), but hearing "Girl From Ipanema" made me look that song up specifically as I was curious where the ubiquitous easy listening tune originated. While this isn't the first ever recording (that was in 1962), this was the version that became the international surprise hit and launched Gilberto's career. If I have the story right, she wasn't even credited on the album when it was released, it was her husband Joao who was the star at the time — she was new to singing. Anyway, that song aside, the whole affair is pleasant and would entice me to sit down at a table in a club if I had wandered in and heard this playing. As a must-listen album, it was perfectly OK in the background. The sax sounds a little too wet for my taste, and all in all, sure, I liked it just fine.

On the day that Astrid died I get the wonderful Getz/Gilberto album. ( Astrid is uncredited) that launched her career. Brilliant summer vibes. Shimmering trumpet/piano with salsa vibes.

Feels like the soundtrack to a lazy late Saturday lunch. Great to relax to, not anything I'd usually seek out.

I feel like I've heard most of this album -- in old 60s-70s movies or coffee shops or more modern movies. There are some songs that are repetitive, and it's mostly easy listening.

Not bad not great. had it on in the background while rebuilding my ipod and was pretty indifferent. Good background music though.

This is one of those iconic albums where everything is lightning in a bottle - from Gilberto’s guitar, Getz’s sax and Astrud Gilberto‘s lovely voice. Also there’s the wonderful production and engineering captures the languorous sexy mood. The girl from Ipanema and Corcovado, are of course iconic bossa nova songs that still sound fresh and delightful today

K.K. Bossa Nova - The sound here is very calm, cool, and collected. it reminds me of some the soundtrack for The Sims 1. The kind of music played at a rich soiree. This is exceptionally made, enjoyed the quick easy listen.

Bossa Nova is a mixture of Brazilian Samba folk music with American smooth jazz influences. And this might just be *THE* Bossa Nova classic. Smooth, ear-pleasing and very accessible music made for total relaxation on a summer evening, preferably in a hammock on a beach, with a coconut in hand and the sound of gently lapping waves in the background. Sometimes this album - and that's mostly due to the sax of Getz - drifts a bit too much into American Lounge music and you feel it might be played in a movie scene where they have to take one of those long 118 storey elevator rides. But it's a very enjoyable warm summer night album nontheless

I understood this genre, and thought that it’s probably a good example of the genre it is, but I didn’t like it. It sounds like Laufey and KK Slider.

I bet Stan and João really hate The Blues Brothers. The Girl From Ipanema sounds like an actual comedy song, or some funny meme joke, rather than a real song. Its a nice tune, but it's so tied to the cliche of elevator music that it's hard to even sit in the same room as it without feeling a bit silly. It's got to be a 2, but it's not really it's fault. I just can't put this on anywhere and maintain any level of social respect

Nice saz and smooth but not an album for me

This is the 2nd Stan Getz album I have had on this list, and to be honest it has me questioning why the first album was included when this seems so much better to me. While the other Bossa Nova albums i've heard so far tend to fade into nothing music, this one has enough of a hook to keep me interested. The vocals are great, the brass is enjoyable, a big improvement but probably not something I would actively listen to.

"The Girl From Ipanema" is an all-time classic for a reason, but like other reviewers have commented this one is nice for background music but blends into that background a little too easily. it just doesn't hold my attention enough for active listening; tracks melted into each other and not in a positive way, started feeling like one big way-too-long song around #3 (and i'm very pro-longsong if done well). objectively a great jazzy bossa nova record, subjectively not my cup of tea. i was already waiting for it to be over about halfway through.

4/10 Smooth, comforting, nice wide sound stage and soft vocals. There's nothing bad in here and the production really makes you feel like you're in a jazz bar. The downside is that this record isn't really adventurous in any way. It just simmers away in a comfortable space without experimenting. I enjoy the retained imperfections which further adds to the live and atmospheric feel, but there's just not a lot of substance so I can't rate this highly. Of course it's another samba album for my last one. This album can fuck all the way off. So much dross and repetitive sounding albums. I could swear that I've had this very same album at least 3 times already (I've just seen this has songs that were on his other albums). It's as if this short lived US dalliance with Samba still has a huge influence on the culture - it's like thinking their obsession with all things Aussie in the 80's makes it so we need to watch all the Yahoo Serious movies. I think that this album would be nice as background music while I’m doing something else, but it didn’t move the needle for me otherwise.

Most elevatory elevator music I have ever heard in a row. Music itself isn't bad, but I'd rather ride an elevator for a minute or two than 39 minutes. Certainly did not help that the last two songs were repeats.

It's fine, nice historical album, but it's the same song for 50 minutes. Just light jazz.

i get that it's meant to be minimal but it just comes off as kinda boring. the sax playing is definitely the highlight here, but that's it. could really benefit from more percussion to add texture to the sound (a snare played with brush drumsticks would elevate this album 10x)

Refreshing and relaxing, but perhaps a bit too relaxing. Started off strong with The Girl from Ipanema, but the rest of the record flew by without making too much of an impression, good or bad.

Elevator music

Not tremendously into the jazz/bossa nova stuff. That being said, this is okay. I think it's perfectly pleasant background noise. I just can't help that feeling of "this would play during cocktail hour" or "this would play in an elevator." Perhaps not the best way to look at it, but it's definitely what my mind defaults to. It's a bit boring to me. I think you'd love this if you liked jazz! I just don't personally.

I wouldn't mind at all if it was playing at a bar or something. If my friend put it on though I'd tell them to turn it the fuck off. It feels like it wants to be laid back and relaxing but the vocals are so grating it hits a weird middle ground where it's just nothing. I keep coming back to find why it's so popular but everytime it just feels like sitting around and waiting to die in a care home. Thank god for the saxophone though. Everytime I was nodding off it blasted my ears and woke me up.

This one wasn't as interesting as the album prior. I am not sure why. It just didn't work as well in my opinion. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good. The backing band wasn't as interesting either. This felt more like elevator music than the last one. Liked Songs: "Doralice" , "Só Danço Samba" ,"The Girl From Ipanema" , "Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)"

This is music you’d expect to hear when at a fancy restaurant. Brings a nice calming ambience, with impactful powerful grooves & a nice laid back approach to the vocals, keeping the overall vibe of the album very nice & chilled. Still not sure why the albums not called Getz/ Gilberto/ Jobim. Jobim features on pretty much all the album don’t understand why he didn’t get his name on the title. All the instruments compliments each other in such an interesting way. You have Gilberto’s nice guitar chords playing steady repetitive chords, as Getz’s gets to showcase what an impressive saxophonist he is. Jobin adding his gentle piano chords which flows through every track he’s included in. The voice of Astrud Gilberto, who I’m going to presume is the wife/ family member of the guitarist, is so gentle and unique. It fits this bossa nova sound very well, in fact I’d have liked to hear more of it. I understand the appeal of this album, and really enjoyed the introduction to bossa nova. However it’s just not something I will revisit that often so I think that reflects harshly in my rating. I did enjoy it as something different though. So much respect for it being the first non-American album to win Album of the year, that’s very cool and I can totally see why. Favourite tracks are: ‘The Girl From Ipanema’, ‘Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)’, ‘O Grande Amor’.

Very pleasant and chilled late night background cocktail lounge music. Doesn't get my juices flowing but its not going to make any ears bleed.

A case where over-saturation and muzak-ification has pretty much ruined this for me. It’s pleasant, the guitar chords are interesting, but it’s just a bit nauseating and boring.

Mid and the vocals suck. Only good one is the first song.

Die Aufnahmen zu Getz/Gilberto fanden 1963 in den A&R Studios in New York statt. Der US-amerikanische Tenorsaxofonist Stan Getz und der brasilianische Sänger und Gitarrist João Gilberto verbinden hier Jazz mit Bossa Nova, unterstützt von Astrud Gilberto und Komponist Antônio Carlos Jobim am Piano. Zu den bekanntesten Stücken gehören „The Girl from Ipanema“, „Corcovado“ und „Desafinado“. Das Album prägt die sanfte, rhythmisch zurückgenommene Ästhetik des Genres und wirkt bis heute stilbildend. Insgesamt ein ruhiges, stimmiges Werk mit klarer musikalischer Linie.

It’s pleasant and easy to listen to. Not my favorite and it was just background noise

Pleasant instrumentation. Might prefer without the vocals. Otherwise would be a good focus or chill background album.

It was cool at first but then I got bored of it pretty quickly. Bossanova is just too repetitive for my liking and all the songs just start to blend together.

Aluksi hymyilin kyllä ääneen ku musa on hissunkissun ja piti laittaa lisää volaa, niin yhtäkkiä Stan paukautti helvetinmoisella volyymillä saksofoninsa kanssa kehiin. En tiiä oliko tahatonta vai tahallista mutta nauratti silti lisäpisteen arvoisesti. Muuten aika pliisua meininkiä, eikä sovi kyllä tähän marraskuumeininkiin yhtään. Ehkä jossain rannalla kookosdrinkkiä siemaillessa voisi kääntyä kolmoseksi, mutta nyt persemiksauksen ansiosta 2 tähteä (ilman sitä yks)

Aika rajua aulamusaa. Girl from Ipanema oli entuudestaan tuttu, ihan hyvä styge kyllä mutta muuten vähän puuduttavaa menoa. Ei nyt kuitenkaan ärsyttänyt, niin mennään kahdella tähdellä.

It’s well recorded and has some good playing. If you like chill background music this is cool, I find bossa nova dull and irredeemably repetitive though. 34 minutes that feels like and hour and a half.

A cosy album, easy listening. Unsure why two tracks are repeated.

If we talk about great background music this is really great one.

Neither jazz nor bossa nova are my kinda music, but since the album opened with a track that is familiar in so many ways, I tried to give it a try, beyond just few feels. It melted into background music, few pretty bits here and there, but mostly I was awakened from my stupor by thinking "this is annoying" and finally gave up midway through the second to last song.

My god this was so boring. Like elevator music (I actually think some of this literally is elevator music). For me this genre is very "you've heard one, you've heard them all." It's not unbearable, but really, really dull.

It's fine - I'd rather just have the music, but that's just me. Never a bit fan of jazz singing.

I love bossa nova and Jobim, to be honest when I saw this album pop-up, I couldn't believe. It was a impossible miracle, and it hit me when I didn't expect. Even though I love bossa nova really much, this album is not really for me. I love it when it has less vocals, and sometimes the instruments supresses the vocals or the other instruments so it sounds weird. This album probably was pretty big milestone for bossa nova world and it's important, and even though I can understand that, not for me.

Like listening to the Wii Shopping Channel theme for half an hour, but annoying

Super vibes my, his whispery singing makes my brain itch a bit. The woman’s voice is beautiful. The music is beautiful, it’s just not really my thing and I probably wouldn’t reach for this album again.

What a strange man

Like a smoky Brazilian lounge, with a cool cat in a fedora on the sax.

I have complex feelings about this album. The ripples of this release are still felt in music made today. Some of my favorite records are infused with the Bossa nova sound that this album pioneered. During my listens, I did enjoy having it on and felt like it blended in to the background seamlessly. But that seamlessness turned out to be one of my biggest issues here. I hate to say it, but I found this album quite boring. Aside from the iconic first track ("The Girl From Ipanema"), all of the songs seemed to run into each other without much ado. I know it was intended to be easy listening, and it was easy. The problem is that it wasn't much else. Even though it's an important and extremely well-done piece of work, I just don't think this album is for me. It left me feeling a bit unsatisfied, like it was a beautiful setup for a story that said nothing.

Years ago, I started working for a department store that was on the verge of being bought out by a competitor. The store played bad covers of music like this. Thinking back, I'm not surprised they were getting bought out. These are not bad songs, but hearing Corcovado again takes me back to the outdated attempts at sophistication at that store.

this is one of those albums that feels like a postcard from somewhere warm and elegant, but i never quite arrived there myself. it’s beautiful, but i couldn’t help feeling like i was standing outside the party, watching through the window with a drink i didn’t order. i don’t listen to a lot of bossa nova, so maybe this is just a genre mismatch. i’m used to albums where more things happen, where tension builds, where songs break or swell or change shape. this doesn’t really do that. it just kind of floats. it's polite. the melodies are soft, the guitar is lovely, and the saxophone slides through like it’s trying not to wake you up. it’s genuinely relaxing, but sometimes that also feels like a long exhale with nothing to anchor it.i get why this album is iconic. i really do. “The Girl From Ipanema” is gorgeous and completely deserved its immortality. Astrud Gilberto’s voice is one of those voices that doesn’t try too hard and still gets under your skin. João’s playing is intricate but effortless. Getz is Getz. and yet, by the halfway mark, i caught myself zoning out. again: maybe that's me, not the music.

Jazz again

Another jazz album that didn't do a lot for me. I don't think it was bad, I just can't say I enjoyed it all that much. It was subdued and quiet, which I liked better than it being overly jazz-tastic. But, it also just kind of blended into the background. It sounded like something that would be playing at a cafe in the morning. That is good in its niche, but isn't really something I like more than that. I did like Girl from Ipanema, which is obviously a very famous song and I had heard before. I don't know that the other tracks were very memorable. It's also not an album I see myself listening to again. Unfortunately I think this is another casualty of my lack of interest in the genre. For me it was fine, but not all that good. Overall: 2.2/5
