Back in an era of when jazz rules this is some kind phenomenal jazz music. The fun upbeat tempos and high energy brass makes this a pretty solid album. The girl From impanema may be the most popular song in this list as it’s been in other albums before. This album isn’t my favorite but still good. This is a nice and easy listening jazz album. 6.4/10

Well I never thought I’d like this but it was something very easy to work with but didn’t put me to sleep. Surprised that I didnt despise it or even dislike and found myself enjoying it. Definitely a strong 7/10 but not incredible enough to be 4 stars. Would listen again.

I only listened to it once - sort of as background music - and it seemed nice. "Girl From Ipanema" is a famous song, of course. I don't have a lot to say about this. I might return to it again at some point.

In a nutshell: swingin' samba/bossa nova Pleasant, minimalist jazz meets gentle samba. Is it really bossa nova? This is the kind of music you’d hear in a 4 plus star hotel lobby or you would play while cooking dinner. I dig it. Overall: 6/10

I'm not familiar with this artist or album, or samba music for that matter, but this has probably been my favorite album from Central and South America that I've gotten to review so far. The arrangements were really nice, especially the horns, and Astrud Gilberto's vocals on a few of the tracks were fantastic. This is the type of album that would be perfect to listen to on a slightly warm Saturday in spring; a day full of sunlight, but a day where you have the freedom to relax and take in everything. This isn't the type of album that I'd normally listen to, but I'm considering getting a copy, because it would be nice to have around.

A very chill bossa nova album

Lounge/ coffee shop vibe. Relaxing sounds while you make gnocchi or chop veggies in the kitchen. Love the use of different instruments that are still prevalent today in the current sonic culture of Brazil and U.S. Kinda sleepy for me, not mad at it. Prefer something a little more up -tempo, little more percussion for my taste 🥁

Lots of longing for unattainable love… welcome to Brazilian music 😂 That sax rips tho , and Joao has a nice voice overall, but I need some more percussion for my taste 🥁 tbh, if it wasn’t for the sax, it’d be hard to get thru the whole album as it’s a bit repetitive Overall Feels like a prescribed reading of a classic novel, yes important to place for historical relevance and your better for reading it, as this album launched the bossa nova genre, but wouldn’t be my first pick for bossa (feels played out) which morphed into my much preferred MPB (música popular brasileira). ✌️

Everyone needs to lounge once in a while. Probably best to have something better to do than just sit and listen to the whole album though.

I'm pretty sure this is a third album on this list that includes some version of "A Girl From Ipanema". I have no idea which version is original, but I think Getz/Gilberto collaboration had it recorded and performed in a best way. Otherwise, it's just a solid album with nice lounge songs, pretty fine for a background during a slow and peaceful day.

Getz/Gilberto really reminds me of an album I looked at earlier in my 1001 albums journey called Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim (Jobim is on this record so that could be part of the reason why) The way they are so similar is that the songs are generally very pleasant and relaxing but it drags on for too long as every song simply sounds too similar to each other. I will also never forgive corcovado for tricking me into thinking i was gonna get something slightly different but that ended up not being the case. I didn't hate this! Because of its use in elevators, it felt familiar. Definitely a background music situation. Would likely be great at a party. Listened to it in the car. Probably didn't require this level of attention

Fine samba/jazz combo album that makes for an easy, if somewhat dreamy and unengaging listen. Peaks up front with 'Ipanema,' but there are several other great compositions mixed in as well that make this an enjoyable experience overall.

Bossa Nova just isn't really my thing I think, but I can respect this album regardless. The guitar playing is impeccable and the vocals are lush and calming.

Brazilian Bossa Nova, this album is probably the standard all other Bossa Nova albums are judged by. This version of The Girl From Ipanema is the one everyone recognizes and remembers as THE version of the song. Overall it was a nice jazzy album to listen to.

When there is actual jazz happening via instrumentals I like it, but too much singing and generic bossa nova to have much bite.

So two Stan Getz albums in my last 10 albums? Come on randomizer, do better. And Desafinado is on both. I still don't care enough about this genre and find myself bored. That may be harsh, but I definitely am not excited. I did finally notice Getz' sax playing on the last song Vivo Sonhando, and he is quite good. But it's still nice background music or the soundtrack playing at a high-end restaurant, nothing more to me.

it was alright - I liked the classic Girl From Impanema - and Corcovada and SO Danco Samba. Its a lovely, chill listen, but not particularly memorable.

Getz/Gilberto is a joint album by American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto. It's a jazz / bossa nova album that popularized bossa nova worldwide and became one of the best-selling jazz albums. Widely acclaimed, this album won Grammys for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Best Engineered Recording - Non-Classical, and was the first non-American album to win Album of the Year in 1965. This album has been certified silver in the UK and gold in Argentina, Canada, Italy, and the US. Funnily enough, the main pair of musicians on this album did not get along in the studio, but they worked through their issues and collaborated on a few albums of bossa nova music. This important piece of bossa nova music or Brazilian jazz is great. It's soft and tender vocals (on some tracks) pair well with the rhythmic guitars, bass, piano, and sax. This is a beautiful album, even if one is not a fan of jazz.

This album reminds me of an ex's grandma (lovely woman). She loved The Girl From Ipanema and used to hum it a bunch. It's a nice memory. This album is an absolute classic. Getz could really play the sax. Gilberto was a master of everything else. Bossa Nova at its purest. Gilberto's wife, Astrud, is the famous voice on The Girl From Ipanema. She absolutely nails it from beginning to end. They really screwed her out of money on that one.

I don't love jazz but this was alright

Bossa nova is such a niche genre, not quite sure how I feel about it. Enjoy it in short bursts like this but it has such a particular sound that most songs sound the same. Definitely heard girl from Ipanema before and a few others were recognisable. Like jazz I think it's a music for the right setting and not something I would just pick up and listen to on the commute.

I quite liked this, it was pretty relaxing. It had nice jazzy beats throughout and kept at a good pace. Nothing overstayed its welcome like traditional Jazz seems to. None of the tracks partifcularly stood out of me but I did enjoy "The Girl from Ipanema".

I enjoyed this much more than the other jazz records we've had recently. Not sure if I'll be going back to it too regularly, but was nice in the background. I bet this is played in loads of restaurants and cafes.

The first foreign, non-english album to pop up on this list for me. Ah, "The girl from Ipanema", THE Bossa Nova song; pretty sure this song single-handedly brought ez listening to America. Crazy how cafe music hasn't really evolved much since its inception; this album is from 1964 but sounds like I would hear it in 2023 starbucks, and then think it was written the year before, and be none the wiser. This statement could definitely be viewed positively, making the inference that the album has a 'timeless' attribute to it. Was enjoyable having this on as easy listening to start my work day, drinking some coffee and crawling through work. Again, like 90% of the music on this list probably, I don't love it, don't hate it, would listen to it with no issues if it was in front of me, but wouldn't go out of the way to find it.

Don't listen if you need coffee. Hasn't made me like jazz. Day 1 but I am still in a rut about known songs being easier for me to actually pay attention to. Realized I've been pronounce Ipanema incorrectly. Sax gets murkier in some of these songs (O Grande Amor?) than I have noticed before.

Delightfully sunny and positive sounding samba. The Portuguese language has an interesting cadence - the natural rhythm of romance languages but with some more slurred and softened consonants. It works well with the music here. Girl from Ipanema of course is the well-known jewel in the crown here.

I love it. The great thing about this system of rating albums is it introduces you to something you already know; i have probably heard The Girl from Ipanema 5 times in Television on the radio, but now i can put names to faces, and listen to it repeatedly, not just holding shazam up to season twelve of the simpsons or whatever. Easy listening, with a relaxed and unpunishing vibe, for hot summer days.

This is one of the best background working albums ever made. That's not a slight, just that it does its thing and if you dip out for 5 minutes that's ok, they're grooving and ready for your return.

Soothing, Relaxing, Pleasant...so many adjectives fit. It also won Album of the Year in1965, the year of my birth. That gets a few points.

This was incredibly easy to listen to and as smooth as butter. The intersection of jazz and samba styles is a great intersection, in my opinion. I don't really have any notes for this album, other than that it was quite a pleasant listen.

Another apposite selection. Astrud Gilberto dies and the next day we get this. Bossa nova is a type of jazz I can tolerate. Girl from Ipanema is a great tune. The songs do all tend to blend into each other but it’s very pleasant background music. I will always remember being on a cruise round Norway where the band played Girl from Ipanema seemingly every day on the observation deck. Seemed a bit out of place at the time but it was a very chilled vibe!

Not sure if Astrud Gilberto's recent death was the reason this got served (could be coincidence), but hearing "Girl From Ipanema" made me look that song up specifically as I was curious where the ubiquitous easy listening tune originated. While this isn't the first ever recording (that was in 1962), this was the version that became the international surprise hit and launched Gilberto's career. If I have the story right, she wasn't even credited on the album when it was released, it was her husband Joao who was the star at the time — she was new to singing. Anyway, that song aside, the whole affair is pleasant and would entice me to sit down at a table in a club if I had wandered in and heard this playing. As a must-listen album, it was perfectly OK in the background. The sax sounds a little too wet for my taste, and all in all, sure, I liked it just fine.

On the day that Astrid died I get the wonderful Getz/Gilberto album. ( Astrid is uncredited) that launched her career. Brilliant summer vibes. Shimmering trumpet/piano with salsa vibes.

I feel like I've heard most of this album -- in old 60s-70s movies or coffee shops or more modern movies. There are some songs that are repetitive, and it's mostly easy listening.

This is one of those iconic albums where everything is lightning in a bottle - from Gilberto’s guitar, Getz’s sax and Astrud Gilberto‘s lovely voice. Also there’s the wonderful production and engineering captures the languorous sexy mood. The girl from Ipanema and Corcovado, are of course iconic bossa nova songs that still sound fresh and delightful today

K.K. Bossa Nova - The sound here is very calm, cool, and collected. it reminds me of some the soundtrack for The Sims 1. The kind of music played at a rich soiree. This is exceptionally made, enjoyed the quick easy listen.

Bossa Nova is a mixture of Brazilian Samba folk music with American smooth jazz influences. And this might just be *THE* Bossa Nova classic. Smooth, ear-pleasing and very accessible music made for total relaxation on a summer evening, preferably in a hammock on a beach, with a coconut in hand and the sound of gently lapping waves in the background. Sometimes this album - and that's mostly due to the sax of Getz - drifts a bit too much into American Lounge music and you feel it might be played in a movie scene where they have to take one of those long 118 storey elevator rides. But it's a very enjoyable warm summer night album nontheless

I’m never opposed to a good bossa nova album, but this lounge soundtrack will leave me more to remember the drink I was having rather than the music itself. Maybe it’s just not the right mood or it’s just too melodic and mellow. There are a few songs on here which are more memorable than others such as So Danco Samba, which has some pretty good saxophone work and vocals. Most of the album just kind of kept it with a nice steady flow, which unfortunately made it forgettable. And even their take on the Girl from Ipanema just seemed tired. I think this album is gonna stay in the stacks for me. Soft listen, not a must listen.

Nothing special

35 and 49 year old men write international hit song about a 17 year old girl. If I was that girl, I'd be upset. Not because a pedo wrote me a song, but because the song I inspired became elevator music.

This album didn’t do much for me. I think there’s a reason it’s been relegated to being “elevator music”. Maybe it’s meaningful in ways I’m not aware of…

I understood this genre, and thought that it’s probably a good example of the genre it is, but I didn’t like it. It sounds like Laufey and KK Slider.

I bet Stan and João really hate The Blues Brothers. The Girl From Ipanema sounds like an actual comedy song, or some funny meme joke, rather than a real song. Its a nice tune, but it's so tied to the cliche of elevator music that it's hard to even sit in the same room as it without feeling a bit silly. It's got to be a 2, but it's not really it's fault. I just can't put this on anywhere and maintain any level of social respect

It was fine at first. Refreshing even. But man did I get tired of that damn saxophone.

Nice saz and smooth but not an album for me

This is the 2nd Stan Getz album I have had on this list, and to be honest it has me questioning why the first album was included when this seems so much better to me. While the other Bossa Nova albums i've heard so far tend to fade into nothing music, this one has enough of a hook to keep me interested. The vocals are great, the brass is enjoyable, a big improvement but probably not something I would actively listen to.

"The Girl From Ipanema" is an all-time classic for a reason, but like other reviewers have commented this one is nice for background music but blends into that background a little too easily. it just doesn't hold my attention enough for active listening; tracks melted into each other and not in a positive way, started feeling like one big way-too-long song around #3 (and i'm very pro-longsong if done well). objectively a great jazzy bossa nova record, subjectively not my cup of tea. i was already waiting for it to be over about halfway through.

4/10 Smooth, comforting, nice wide sound stage and soft vocals. There's nothing bad in here and the production really makes you feel like you're in a jazz bar. The downside is that this record isn't really adventurous in any way. It just simmers away in a comfortable space without experimenting. I enjoy the retained imperfections which further adds to the live and atmospheric feel, but there's just not a lot of substance so I can't rate this highly. Of course it's another samba album for my last one. This album can fuck all the way off. So much dross and repetitive sounding albums. I could swear that I've had this very same album at least 3 times already (I've just seen this has songs that were on his other albums). It's as if this short lived US dalliance with Samba still has a huge influence on the culture - it's like thinking their obsession with all things Aussie in the 80's makes it so we need to watch all the Yahoo Serious movies. Swishy mellow jazz with fado style crooning. A laid back lazy Sunday morning sound, it feels flighty and wistful, but listless and melodically aimless.

I think that this album would be nice as background music while I’m doing something else, but it didn’t move the needle for me otherwise.

Not something I’d necessarily sit and analyse deeply, but as a mood-setter it works brilliantly—relaxed, classy, and quietly addictive.

I guess, fine for what it is? But really not my thing. I never need to hear The Girl From Ipanem again, and I've heard it twice in 120 albums.

I'm not a fan of modern jazz or Bossa Nova. This album is high quality, but it isn't enjoyable to me at all.

Jazzy jazz...

Most elevatory elevator music I have ever heard in a row. Music itself isn't bad, but I'd rather ride an elevator for a minute or two than 39 minutes. Certainly did not help that the last two songs were repeats.

It's fine, nice historical album, but it's the same song for 50 minutes. Just light jazz.

Astrid's voice is great. Saxophone is brilliant. But Joao is woeful and bassa nova dreadful.

Jazz is really not my thing. I got bored. I can't help but hear it and think "elevator music." Maybe I'm not cultured enough. I'll excitedly await the day I "get it"

i get that it's meant to be minimal but it just comes off as kinda boring. the sax playing is definitely the highlight here, but that's it. could really benefit from more percussion to add texture to the sound (a snare played with brush drumsticks would elevate this album 10x)

Refreshing and relaxing, but perhaps a bit too relaxing. Started off strong with The Girl from Ipanema, but the rest of the record flew by without making too much of an impression, good or bad.

Elevator music

Not tremendously into the jazz/bossa nova stuff. That being said, this is okay. I think it's perfectly pleasant background noise. I just can't help that feeling of "this would play during cocktail hour" or "this would play in an elevator." Perhaps not the best way to look at it, but it's definitely what my mind defaults to. It's a bit boring to me. I think you'd love this if you liked jazz! I just don't personally.

I wouldn't mind at all if it was playing at a bar or something. If my friend put it on though I'd tell them to turn it the fuck off. It feels like it wants to be laid back and relaxing but the vocals are so grating it hits a weird middle ground where it's just nothing. I keep coming back to find why it's so popular but everytime it just feels like sitting around and waiting to die in a care home. Thank god for the saxophone though. Everytime I was nodding off it blasted my ears and woke me up.

This one wasn't as interesting as the album prior. I am not sure why. It just didn't work as well in my opinion. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good. The backing band wasn't as interesting either. This felt more like elevator music than the last one. Liked Songs: "Doralice" , "Só Danço Samba" ,"The Girl From Ipanema" , "Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)"

This is music you’d expect to hear when at a fancy restaurant. Brings a nice calming ambience, with impactful powerful grooves & a nice laid back approach to the vocals, keeping the overall vibe of the album very nice & chilled. Still not sure why the albums not called Getz/ Gilberto/ Jobim. Jobim features on pretty much all the album don’t understand why he didn’t get his name on the title. All the instruments compliments each other in such an interesting way. You have Gilberto’s nice guitar chords playing steady repetitive chords, as Getz’s gets to showcase what an impressive saxophonist he is. Jobin adding his gentle piano chords which flows through every track he’s included in. The voice of Astrud Gilberto, who I’m going to presume is the wife/ family member of the guitarist, is so gentle and unique. It fits this bossa nova sound very well, in fact I’d have liked to hear more of it. I understand the appeal of this album, and really enjoyed the introduction to bossa nova. However it’s just not something I will revisit that often so I think that reflects harshly in my rating. I did enjoy it as something different though. So much respect for it being the first non-American album to win Album of the year, that’s very cool and I can totally see why. Favourite tracks are: ‘The Girl From Ipanema’, ‘Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)’, ‘O Grande Amor’.

This may be a good example of bossa nova music, but man this was a chore to get through. It was even quite pleasant in parts but just found it so incredibly boring. Music to put yourself to sleep to.
