Ooooh .. she looks straight ahead not at me! An amazing historic album! this is a wonderful album and a classic - bringing in boss nova to Americans! Astrid's amazing sultry voice can stop anyone in her tracks. Getz's best work, (follow up album is all excellent) and Joao Gilberto is amazing! you will enjoy!

Last time I had a bossa nova album, I enjoyed it so much I looked up top albums and ended up listening to this back then. It is a lovely album, I do particularly appreciate Astrud’s vocals. Very relaxing, gentle, and danceable.

Memory lane

Stan Getz is so smooth. He and Gilberto turned a form of dance music into wistful mood music. Astrud's contributions just add the icing to the cake.

The opening song was very familiar. Overall it was a good album. It was not over the top jazz, and it did not drone on. I do not think that I will revisit it, but it was fine to listen to. I would not complain if it was playing and I heard it again.

This is only relevant for one song, a classic that isn't nearly as good as my grandparents told me it was. Beyond that, it's evocative of a bygone era.

I should find out more about this album. I can recognise it's stature, maturity and importance but I just have no connection with this type of music at all. It's from a different generation and mentality. A lost time for me.

The Girl from Ipanema was popular and very familiar to me from back then. I don't choose to listen to jazz, but if I were I would welcome this. Overall good album.

I'm not typically a jazz fan but this was pretty good.

Nice to have on in the background, but I'd probably enjoy it a lot more if they lost the vocals.

This is what I'm looking for in lounge style music. Sitting in a dimly lit bar with a nice cocktail and relaxing. The rhythm can get repetitive, but the album is short enough it doesn't become annoying.

Well this is smooth.

This album is pretty much what I know of bossa nova. The first song is 'Girl from Ipanema' - which everyone knows. Definitely worth re-listens and something I can just put on as background music.

The working title of this was apparently 'Music To Die Slowly In A Care Home To' but they decided to go with something less on the nose.

- übel chillig. girl from ipanema natürlich ein absoluter ohrwurm - leider in seiner gänze mir etwas zu eintönig. Vor allem in nochmaligen Durchskippen hört sich 80% des Albums leider absolut gleich an. moody und stilvoll aber gleich - Würde ich vielleicht in richtiger Situation nochmal anmachen. aber dann weniger wegen einzelner Songs oder bestimmter parts, sondern der gesamtstimmung wegen. 3/5

Super entspannt mal wieder, um in den Tag zu starten. Werde ich mir mal wegspeichern für Tage, an denen man so ein ruhiges Album gut gebrauchen kann.

This needs to be heard on the beach instead of a staid office which is where I heard it. It is relaxing and calming music but I do have to be in the mood to hear it. Prefer the songs with Astrud Gilberto singing than Joao.

I've always loved Samba, Stan, Joao and Antonio separate or together. ......and above all the dreamy Astrud. This is just like warm honey to my ears. The guitar, the sax and a contrast in singers too. This doesn't get any better.

The gold standard of the genre. Being married into a Brazilian family, this is a staple of our household.

5/5. This was so much more enjoyable than I was expecting, actually relaxing but not annoying. Some might call this elevator music, and yes there are similarities, but there is actually creative and well-played instrumentation here. And although there is a language barrier for most of the songs, it doesn't take away from the enjoyment because it is so smooth and quiet that it never overtakes the main attraction of the music.

This album was lovely. The vocals/instrumentals are so relaxing and evokes the feelings of laying on the beach on a beautiful, breezy summer day. The perfect soundtrack for a lazy, relaxing day.

The birth of cool. Bossa Nova. My childhood memories of life with Mom and Dad and my siblings. This vinyl record on the deluxe stereo. Nice memories.

Back in an era of when jazz rules this is some kind phenomenal jazz music. The fun upbeat tempos and high energy brass makes this a pretty solid album. The girl From impanema may be the most popular song in this list as it’s been in other albums before. This album isn’t my favorite but still good. This is a nice and easy listening jazz album. 6.4/10

Well I never thought I’d like this but it was something very easy to work with but didn’t put me to sleep. Surprised that I didnt despise it or even dislike and found myself enjoying it. Definitely a strong 7/10 but not incredible enough to be 4 stars. Would listen again.

This is the first time in over 700 albums that I'm going to write *both* the following: - this [bossa nova] is not a preferred genre for me - I'm immediately adding this to my music library Everyone knows "Girl From Ipanema" - even if you don't know it, you know it. This is the chillest of chill music that still keeps (or puts) you in a good mood. A little Stan Getz sax playing that gives the vibe of being in a club drinking whisky on your own without a care. Great stuff. And these old jazz albums just sound fantastic. Headphones recommended. 8/10 4 stars.

I had high expectations going in, given that this is one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time. It was pretty good for study music, very peaceful. I don't know if I can choose specific songs but as a whole it was great. Like Loobis said the last one was elevator music, this is definitely hotel music or something.

TIL that bossa nova - of which this album is likely the best-ever example - was invented in the late 1950s. I also learned that sexism prevented Astrud Gilberto from being credited anywhere on this album, despite her classic Girl from Ipanema debut.

The album cover is weird, my first non English album I think. It's apparently jazz and samba and I'm all here for it, because it must be good. First song, who doesn't know this title likee. I love his voice, it's soothing and much better than Bert Jansch, which I rated earlier and left me speechless in a bad way. I'm loving the vibe it's so a chill coffee shop cored. Omg the woman came in, it's even better now, and she's English too. The instrumental break is with a saxophone it's scratchy and enjoyable in a different way. Piano came in, I'm dancing to it, it's so funn. I loved this 9/10. Second song, even better start, weird gibberish it was and not it's another language(I don't want to assume what it is). This is the best selling jazz album, and I can't disagree why it is. The saxophone came in and it's slaying. There is a constant beat in the background too, makes it richer. He sang a little non lyrical at the end and I alsoo loved this 9.2/10. 3th song, this is giving elevator music, if it was as perfect as it could be, I'm complementing it basically. His voice is so satisfying, and the constant beat, I love it. Saxophone came in and I had goosebumps, this is The quality jazz I didn't know I needed. Lyrics are not much, but not like that is what matters in this album. I'm IN LOVE WITH THIS ALBUM ALREADY. Piano was only at the end. 10/10 basically, not even gonna say 9.? for no reason. 4th song, so relaxing, I feel like I'm having a grand, classical talk with someone in a so very chill place, like, it's just THAT album, definitely will help me study too. Not gonna write much, just gonna enjoy it. Seeya. 10/10 obvi. 5th song, oh English Lady came back. The woman voice fits the jazz more sometimes too, so the fact that she's here is quite nice. Again not gonna talk much, I usually review how the instruments come in and basically I like writing what happens in the song, but I'd rather enjoy it now. 10/10. I just read the 1 star complaints, and what I considered good on this, which was if elevator music was too good, or playing this at dinners, people saw it as a disadvantage. I mean this is much better than most punk rock albums, now that is pure noise, which I do like, but this one's otherworldly, it's still subjective I guess. I love the man's voice too, one of them didn't, I don't get it, I have heard bad voices and he isn't one of them. Also someone said, lyrics are pointless because it's Spanish and they doesn't understand them(not a grammar mistake), but they could have searched it online if so interested (not sure if it's available, but still) 6th song, didn't even notice it changed, since I was writing the paragraph above. Again amazing vibess, can't complain for a second, it is repetitive, but that makes it better. 10/10 all the wayy. 7th song, same good situation. So lovely to have found this album. The saxophone at the end was loudd. I am impressed by this song too, I just can't describe how I like it, it's just good, the beat, piano, saxophone, his voice, simple yet so great. Same rating as the others obviously. 8th song, I'm just too brought into this, I'm not gonna say anything, just the production is giving its best. 9th song, I thought album started over, apparently this is a shorter version of the first song, starting with the woman vocals. As good as possible. 10th song starts with woman voice. After the magnificent break he joined. It was too short, but oh well nothing lasts longer than it should. I wish the album had more songs, but I will check his other albums, idk if he has many, but still. Anyway I reallyyy loved this, unique genre, have heard it before, but not this good apparently. Just gonna shortly say it was a 5 star album all the way through.

Smooth bossanova; standout tracks are obviously Ipanema and Desafinado. Better than the Astrud Gilberto solo album we had, in large part due to the presence of Getz's sax.

I only listened to it once - sort of as background music - and it seemed nice. "Girl From Ipanema" is a famous song, of course. I don't have a lot to say about this. I might return to it again at some point.

I would like to alter my brain so this is playing in there all day.

In a nutshell: swingin' samba/bossa nova Pleasant, minimalist jazz meets gentle samba. Is it really bossa nova? This is the kind of music you’d hear in a 4 plus star hotel lobby or you would play while cooking dinner. I dig it. Overall: 6/10

Always thrilled to have a jazz album thrown my way. So much so that I’m definitely biased toward liking them and rating them highly. But man this album is such a vibe. I can see why it became so popular and helped spread the bossa nova across the world. Expert, precise playing from all involved. Wonderful soloing, great rhythm section, and the vocals really do well to match the style and vibe of everything else. My one complaint? The vibes between songs are so similar that a casual listen makes it difficult to tell one song from the next. That’s not as bad on an album I enjoyed though. Standout tracks: The Girl from Ipanema, Desafinado, So Danco Samba, Vivo Sonhando

This is jazzy and relaxing but not really my jam

I'm not familiar with this artist or album, or samba music for that matter, but this has probably been my favorite album from Central and South America that I've gotten to review so far. The arrangements were really nice, especially the horns, and Astrud Gilberto's vocals on a few of the tracks were fantastic. This is the type of album that would be perfect to listen to on a slightly warm Saturday in spring; a day full of sunlight, but a day where you have the freedom to relax and take in everything. This isn't the type of album that I'd normally listen to, but I'm considering getting a copy, because it would be nice to have around.

Some nice bossa nova to put into the background. Perfect chill album and I didn't know this was the source of The Girl from Ipanema. Wish there were more albums like this from the bossa nova category instead of the nth 90s britpop . There has to be a lot more in this genre to discover.

Mein Einstieg in den Latin Jazz.

First, this classic is the definition of nice music. Second, The Girl from Ipanema is absolutely divine, as is the singer's voice. This album used to be one of the select albums that people tried out when they wanted a taste of what jazz has to offer (together with the likes of Kind of Blue). Things don't work like that anymore, and I wonder if this "progress" caused Getz/Gilberto to disappear off the radar. Which would be a great shame.

The absolute premier bossa nova album. A fun fact that I found out after looking this up, bossa nova is Portuguese for "music that sounds like that one Getz and Gilberto song". I know they didn't write Girl from Ipanema (sorry Jobim, Moreas, Gimbel), but they may have been the second people to record it, and they one hundred percent are the reason that hundreds of people have recorded it now. "Desifinado" is probably my favorite bossa nova track of all time. Incredible how this whole album had such a similar sound throughout, and yet I never tired of it. Good stuff.

Sleepy bedroom bossanova Getz and Gilberto are great but Jobim’s songs all sound the same.

Non-invasive kind of music. Generally considered as an classic. And I can't disagree. The kind of album that instantly gets you in a good mood.

This sun-soaked album, along with many others in the OG Bossa Nova movement are among the greatest of all time, but Getz & Gilberto are the godfathers. Add into the mix Gilberto's wife on occasional vocal duties, with all of her detached sensuality, and you've got an album that spawned an entire genre. Bossa Nova literally means "new style", and it's one that captivated the hearts of romantics around the world with sax solos that sound like drizzled suntan oil on a well-satisfied afternoon lover. 5 stars.

Wow, I really don't like this genre of music. The whole album feels like I am trapped in the lounge of a hotel. I understand how some people like this music, but I rarely, if ever, had the desire to listen to bossa nova. This album just proves that I still don't like listening to it. Favorite Song(s): N/A

The quintessential bossa-nova album. From relaxing at home to hosting a cocktail party, this album is great.

Obviously the first track, "Girl from Impanema", is a classic but the rest of this album is just as catchy. What can immediately feel repetitive deserves a closer listen. Around what feels like the same guitar riff in every song are a lot of beautiful phrases from other instruments. The guitar provides the anchor for all of the rest of the music to flourish.

I think I would have a very different opinion of this album if I'd been listening in the cold UK. As it was I was listening in lovely warm sunshine which suited the music. Having said that I wouldn't rate it that highly. A listenable low 3* ?

What the hell, I did not expect to enjoy an album from 1964 this much, especially a song not in English, and bossa nova too! Never in a hundred years. The Girl from Ipanema is such an awesome, fantastic, easy to listen to music and I'm not very surprised to find out that it's one of the most popular song of all time. Its my first time listening to it though and it will definitely enter my song rotation. Yeah most of the album is great. I like this a lot.

I get why this album is important, but other than at dinner parries, Bossa Nova puts me to sleep.

A classic album through and through. This is basically the blueprint of every coffee shop album from Starbucks that I listened to in my youth, which makes it sound more nostalgic than I realized. It's great napping music, too, which doesn't mean it's boring or white noise, but more that it's relaxing.

Pleasant enough, but not something id seek out

First, Getz comes in too loud on "The Girl from Ipanema." I realize he was the star of the show, but the mix should have been done with more subtlety. As a whole, this is a perfect album to have on in the background of a laughably overpriced, “artisanal,” cocktail bar. Can’t you just picture yourself watching flies fornicate on the window surrounded by hipsters in full affectation mode trying to pretend this music isn’t a snooze-fest every bit as boring as they are. Get out your drool bucket as this album is auditory Nembutal.

I put this on for my drive home and almost immediately resolved to change it. Ten minutes later I remembered it was on and changed it. Jazzy bossa nova background music. Ew.

It's the fucking girl from Ipanema! This album feels like smelling the faint hint of perfume when walking past an attractive stranger. Like the first sun rays gently warming your face on a cold spring day. Pleasant.

Soft music, it would be good to listen to as you fall asleep! Pleasant dreams....

Lounge/ coffee shop vibe. Relaxing sounds while you make gnocchi or chop veggies in the kitchen. Love the use of different instruments that are still prevalent today in the current sonic culture of Brazil and U.S. Kinda sleepy for me, not mad at it. Prefer something a little more up -tempo, little more percussion for my taste 🥁

Lots of longing for unattainable love… welcome to Brazilian music 😂 That sax rips tho , and Joao has a nice voice overall, but I need some more percussion for my taste 🥁 tbh, if it wasn’t for the sax, it’d be hard to get thru the whole album as it’s a bit repetitive Overall Feels like a prescribed reading of a classic novel, yes important to place for historical relevance and your better for reading it, as this album launched the bossa nova genre, but wouldn’t be my first pick for bossa (feels played out) which morphed into my much preferred MPB (música popular brasileira). ✌️

Soulful, classy, relaxing. Made me want a cocktail and some elegant surroundings. Loved the trumpet sound and that infectious bossa nova! It did all blur into one, but I didn't mind. Needs a 7 out if 10 (again).

Evocative, smooth, sexy. Might have enjoyed it more if I spoke Portuguese, but not much. It’s a 3.5 really but it warmed up a freezing day so rounded up.

Years ago, a Brazilian colleague of my partner’s gave me every CD released by Tom Jobim. His music has been the sound track to many a London commute ever since. I can report that rainy January streets are much-improved by the sounds of sunny bossa nova. He really was a genius. I went to see Astrud Gilberto at the Jazz Cafe in the early 90s. I drank too much red wine to remember what my ears thought but at least I was there.

Vibes- 5/5 Overall 5/5 I'm writing this portion about halfway through the album. I turned this album on at night before I was getting ready for bed, and let me just say this is THE album for that "wind down evening" vibe. It's great to listen, have a glass of wine, and just sit and relax. Absolutely gorgeous piece of music.

Everyone needs to lounge once in a while. Probably best to have something better to do than just sit and listen to the whole album though.

Easy listening Latino style, remembering the sweet 60s.

Perfect for a chill night

I'm pretty sure this is a third album on this list that includes some version of "A Girl From Ipanema". I have no idea which version is original, but I think Getz/Gilberto collaboration had it recorded and performed in a best way. Otherwise, it's just a solid album with nice lounge songs, pretty fine for a background during a slow and peaceful day.

Pretty pleasant. I wish that I had heard it in the summer rather than the cold month of December but I think it did warm me up a tad.

Bossa Nova anyone? Laid back, atmospheric, and groovy. It's like funk for runway models with no ass to shake, just a gentle bouncing swing through a cafe at dusk. Singular achievement. Total masterpiece fusing jazz and bossa nova. Just short of my heavy rotation because I'm not that chill.

Groovy, jazzy, smooth music. There is a reason that this style is the quintessential “elevator music.” It’s very mellow and calming but not thing really reaches out and grabs ya. Girl From Ipanima is great but still bears the burden of being “elevator music.” Will listen as background. Nothing too exciting on this album.

Getz/Gilberto really reminds me of an album I looked at earlier in my 1001 albums journey called Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim (Jobim is on this record so that could be part of the reason why) The way they are so similar is that the songs are generally very pleasant and relaxing but it drags on for too long as every song simply sounds too similar to each other. I will also never forgive corcovado for tricking me into thinking i was gonna get something slightly different but that ended up not being the case. This album is a 2.5 that i have adjusted to a 3 for this site. Best Song: The Girl From Ipanema Worst Song: Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)

I didn't hate this! Because of its use in elevators, it felt familiar. Definitely a background music situation. Would likely be great at a party. Listened to it in the car. Probably didn't require this level of attention

A super silky smooth bossa nova album with great vocals and cool sax moments, worth a chill out too but make sure you have a drink in hand because it puts you in a lounge mood

Fine samba/jazz combo album that makes for an easy, if somewhat dreamy and unengaging listen. Peaks up front with 'Ipanema,' but there are several other great compositions mixed in as well that make this an enjoyable experience overall.

Amazing, between Gilberto’s voice and classical guitar laying down the samba rhythms and Getzs sax it’s just lovely. 5/5

I love this record. It's a perfect album to have in the background at a cocktail party. I play it while making dinner at least once a week. It's fun, well played, and well recorded. A wonderful record that everyone should have.

Bossa Nova just isn't really my thing I think, but I can respect this album regardless. The guitar playing is impeccable and the vocals are lush and calming.

Just lovely

A beautiful album. The Girl from Impaenema is gorgeous and the rest of the album is almost as beautiful. The singing is ubderstated, the arrangements spare and nearly perfect but for me the star of the album is Stan Getz his playing is nothing short of perfect. The tone of his sax is warm and lush and complements the song perfectly never overpowering. Great album 4.5 stars
