Reviews (page 7 of 13)
I liked this more and more as I listened. It started off sounding like relaxation music from a health spa and (with the last track, Avalon) ended the same way. The 3rd track (Starálfur) had more lyrics (in Icelandic, so meaningless to me) and a nice feel, with a lot of strings. In Ný batterí and in the title track, I found myself trying to parse the lyrics (which didn't work, of course). I think my least favorite was "Hjartað hamast (bamm bamm bamm)".
It’s beautiful, bewitching, beguiling. Other be words. Magical.
Liked it, the kind of rock music you didn't know you needed, but the band just takes you on another planet, completely flying 10 000 above the ground. Cool discovery.
Great. Def need this kinda vibe sometimes.
This album takes you on a journey.
I have listened to a lot of Sigur Ros, but I think I've mainly listened to later albums like (). I did a little reading on this and it was amazing they came out with this amazing masterpiece after their previous album only sold 300 copies! I do see the historical significance of this in the post rock world.
Yowzers. Another album I didn’t realize I had this strong of an emotional connection to. I listened to this album a lot back when it was released. Svefn-G-Englar is a five star song and provokes feelings. Parts of this album still sound like it’s been transported to the present day from the future. I’m listening to this over lunch and now I don’t want to go back to work.
This album is gorgeous, brimming with beautiful string arrangements and soaring vocals I don’t understand. This album is also gargantuan, each song at least 7 minutes (mostly) and they’re all the same slow tempo. I really do love it but I recognize these things as slight flaws. Songs can be as long or short as they need to be, and I would say most of these earn their length but not all. Four stars for sure though.
it was a cool listen but kinda boring tbh
It took me a few songs but it got me into this lovely dreamlike state in the end
Shit makes me cry.

Lovely album
Sounds
Gostei! Mas algumas (poucas) vezes achei um pouco cansativo.
Just what I needed on a day where I'm feeling very under the weather. I put my headphones on and let it wash over me. I really like the lush textures and brushed drums. I will be returning to this one. Lovely.
I have a weird relationship with Sigur Rós, sometime I like it and drown in it, other times I don't understand it.
- Krass. Wusste aber trotzdem null was mich erwartet.
Pumped for this it’s been awhile since I’ve listened to them, and it’s only been a few songs but I do really love the atmospheric art rock sound. Didn’t realize how absolutely Icelandic these guys are. Dadi is probably a big fan. Starálfur is one I’ve definitely heard before. Beautiful track. Love the upright guitar used as a cello on some songs. Radiohead uses that on a few tracks and it’s such a cool sound. Almost all of these songs are super dreamy especially with the orchestration and angelic Icelandic voices. It runs longer than I’d like some albums to be but could see myself loving to take a long walk to this in the future.
Folk-y crescendocore post-rock. Enjoyed the vibes of this one, carefully moving between chilly winter sounds and strong gusts of wind. Spares and not sparse at the same time. Very good, would recommend. Tho sometimes the vocals sound like Simlish to me
Breathtakingly, hauntingly beautiful like watching a glacier melt. About the same pace too
While I love this album, it's not one I go back to with any regularity. Highly innovative and new for when it was released.
Finde ich ziemlich cool. Ich mag das atmosphärische und die Arbeit mit Klängen und das Gefühl, dass manche Lieder vermitteln. 7.8/10
What do you say about this album? It’s just good music. The late 90’s was a stomping ground of quintessentially good music and this is no exception. It opened a lot of windows to what world music could be and that was? Damn enjoyable.
Weird. Liked it.
Icelandic rock band Sigur Ros, but more of New Age meditative melodies so I bought these songs Svenfn-G-Englar (meditation track) Olsen Olsen Agaetis byrjun
This was surprising. I expected electronica, and it’s there, but there were songs that felt classical and one I had to stop what I was doing just to listen.
Kind of a slog to get through but I was happy at the end of the slog! Love a lil weird alien baby album cover.
One of those unbearably pretentious hipster post-rock nonsense bands that was passed around for indie cred in the 2000s. I was always much more of a GY!BE fan, but I have to admit this band is pretty talented. Ambient, moody and just a wee bit psychedelic. Also, anyone else remember the webcomic Questionable Content?
Ethereal, magical music. Listening to this album makes me believe in the mysterious and transcendent of life! Loved it!
Very cool ambient sounds and unique arrangement - very relaxing album
Beautiful, calm and soothing. A very relaxing listening experience 👍 4/5
I’ll put this on my list of things to work to. It’s just right for deep work and deep thinking. 4/5
That one was really cool, especially for a rainy day.
its very psychological but soulful at the same time. not exactly what i would listen to on the daily but it is a very good album.
So very far out of my usual wheelhouse, but so captivating. Hauntingly beautiful. I didn't look up the English translations to the lyrics but still found it completely enjoyable. I'm not sure how often I'd revisit it as this isn't the type of music you listen to passively, rather it is an active experience. 4/5
I worked at a record store when this album came out. When it would come on during the day, we'd joke it was 'nap time'. That being said, it's a great background album, but I don't mean that as an insult. I know the band made up a language for this, and it makes the vocals another instrument and part of the soundscape. Upon close listening it's droney, symphonic and catchy in all the ways I want music like this to sound. I like this so much more than Radiohead I can't even begin to tell you. Take my 4 stars, you weird Icelanders, you've earned it.
Like this one a lot. Can't even tell if the lyrics are in a language I know. But the ambience of it is great.
I really liked this album. It was great for background music while working but if I focused on it too, it was a good listen.
Loved it. So strange and ethereal, but you still connect with it on an emotional level.
Apparently I'm late to the party. When I started "1001" project with the idea of "hey, I'll hear something I would've missed, maybe something there's no way I wouldn't have missed." Nailed it. Not entirely my thing, but there are certainly moments where this will fit perfect. Thanks!
Instrument with trance. Tool like
Very cool trippy and atmospheric. I will be listening to it again.
So happy that this came up. I used to listen to this record all the time when it came out. It's an exotic, ambient sound that you can just sink into. We would put it on and drink wine and talk all night. Also good for studying, tripping, taking long drives through austere landscapes, and floating in a pool looking up at the stars. This band to me goes hand in hand with Ulrich Schnauss.
Don't know what they say but enjoyed the music
Very beautiful sound, reminds me of some of Radiohead’s work for sure.
Mind opening...
Nice
Dreamland "music". I like it but opportunities to sit and listen to it would be few.
Never been to Iceland but this music makes me feel the mystery and immenseness of that part of the world. I could feel myself dancing with the aurora borealis and the breathing in and out with the universe.
Interesting musical journey! Love much of this album and its relaxing style. Even though the lyrics are not a real language, so I had read, it is soothing. Great musical style.
neat chill rock. not something i'll listen to again but neat.
Nice! Fun to hear!
4/5. Slow and sweet, these songs transcend the language barrier. I have no idea what he is signing about but I enjoy it nonetheless. Orchestral and brass sections pulling me through these songs. It's not perfect for some of the passages going on a little too long or the vocals are a little too breathy, but when it hits, it's alien and familiar, cozied up in my bed and dreaming of the stars.
I probably prefer Takk slightly more but this is still an extraordinary listen. For an album in which the lyrics are utterly obtuse it is remarkable how affecting it is
Totally forgot about this band and record. Listened to this quite a bit 10 years ago. The first 3 songs are absolutely beautiful. If they could hold my attention as long as these three tracks do - this album would be a five. Staralfur is pretty enough on it's own to demand this album be on this list. However after it, things start to get a little bland and stale. Might just be the style of music for me, but I don't think this record needed to be over an hour long. Still a great record with some pretty unique songs.
Vackert album! Episka långa soundtrack aktiga låtar
This was good, really nice atmospheric tunes
Great ethereal sound, just went on a touch too long
A one-of-a-kind album. It's very dreamy and soothing... few albums like this make me feel like I'm a kid again and transport me to that world of wonder and naive fun, while it still has its darker moments, such as the devastating Ný batterí. A lot of beautiful melodies :')
Truly a beautiful album. Peaceful with moments of epicness and melancholy. Will revisit sigur ros 4.5
Such a relaxing album. Atmospheric.
A eerie and poignant album.
I think Sigur Rós being included on this project is incredibly fitting, and while I'm not an expert on their work, this was an excellent album to include. This is only their second album, and yet the music here is so ambient and so beautiful and has such maturity as far as sound goes. It is haunting and eloquent and moving. From what I do know of this group, I can't imagine there being a better album pick of theirs to be on here. This was probably a 3.5 for me, and I have zero issues bumping it to a 4. Very lovely album.
Known before: Band only Standouts: Starálfur Flugufrelsarinn Viðrar vel til loftárása Olsen Olsen 8/10
Known before: Band Standouts: 07. Viðrar vel til loftárása 09. Ágætis Byrjun Rating: 8.0
Beautiful record. Haunting and imaginative compositions. A journey of dark symphonies with some touches of psychedelia.
This dude is great. Really pretty album.
Loved
One of my favorite bands and one of my favorite songs, “Staralfur”.
Spacey but also somehow folky. Post rock meets new age meets folk and a trace of Radiohead. Almost gave it 5 stars, I really want to be able to use half stars.
I was pleasantly shocked by this one. I wasn’t expecting to like it due to the length but it proved me wrong. Now it was long with lots of longform songs. Do I think some could get cut down a little? Yes. Do I think they’re also perfect songs? Yes. I know that sounds contradictory but this was a truly great album.
Beautiful. I think some of the tracks just might have saved my soul.
ahhhhh yeah!! Do love me this album as well!! I first heard about it from JRE when he had Dominic Monaghan on as guest. I remember hearing that the language spoken in these songs are just made up. Staralfur is pretty. As much as I like still only gonna give it a 4
A very interesting album with a pleasing sound to it. I have no idea how to classify this album (or what they are saying), but it was very dreamy at times.
Great music for an art gallery or son et lumiere experience. Meditative.
Definitely a grower. Listened twice, and it sucked me in a lot more on the second playthrough. Favourite tracks (so far): Svefn-g-englar, Starálfur, Olsen olsen.
Some of the most beautiful music I don’t understand.
This album is really good. Even though the long songs mean I will probably not listen to it again, This album was great. Each song sounded different and interesting. It reminded me a bit to king crimson, the trumpets or the melody playing softly like the flute in the song, and then having pretty good highs. I liked this album a lot, Glad I listened to it.
This album benefited from a second listening, months and months later after taking a pause from the 1001 greatest albums challenge. I remember listening to it the first time stuck in west side highway traffic, and for whatever reason forgetting to write a review. This time around though, it was a morning drive down to Jackson and a really enjoyable experience. It feels like an album that shouldn’t be so good, but nearly every song except the last (Avalon) is beautiful in its own way. I have a special place in my heart for “Staralfur” after the Life Aquatic, and it ended up being a serendipitous day hearing “Sven-g-englar” again during Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. A lovely album and a great way back into this challenge.
Sigur Ros was a band I had heard of. Have heard some songs by them. Always meant to give them a proper listen to. So now that's happening. All that being said. I did enjoy the album and can recognize that it is really good. But I don't think I'd come back to it.
Very chill and nice. Icelandic is an underrated singing language. 8/10 would listen again
Sleepy time music
A beautiful soundscape. This is what Iceland sounds like.
Haven't listened to the Rós before, but I think I will again soon
Ok, I REALLY liked this album. I couldn't understand the lyrics, but the instrumentals are top notch! I added quite a few song to my favorites!
Vielseitiges, sehr alternatives Album mit experimentellem Sound. Nichts zum ständig hören, aber dennoch beeindruckend.
What a fantastic sound this album has. Production great soundscape tunes what more can I say
Très planant et onirique. Des musiques magnifiques. Des morceaux longs, ce dont on n'a pas l'habitude. Pas le style que j'écouterais au quotidien mais très beau !
Epic, spacey, emotional and intimate -- all from a band who sings in Icelandic (or occasionally their own, invented dialect), which I do not understand. Less doom-y than Godspeed You! Black Emperor, more delicate than Explosions In The Sky; this is perhaps the most accessible entry point into circa-2000 post-rock. You won't dance to this record. You likely won't sing along much. Some pieces are long and some meander. I'd encourage everyone to check this out, though. There's a reason this has been used in countless movie scores since its release: there's little music out there that contains more sheer feeling than Sigur Rós's masterwork, Ágætis Byrjun.
Very ethereal. I really liked this. "Olsen Olsen" was the standout for me. The rest of the tracks were great to have on in the background and get things done. I can see putting this on and completely zoning out.
Feels like upgraded low roar or smth like this. Unfortunately no english, but it makes things harder to realize, requires more concentration on instrumental, which is kinda cool exp. Absolutely stunning album.
I remember when this came out, it sounded like nothing I'd ever heard before. Favorite: Olsen Olsen
I've never quite known what to make of Sigur Ros. I had listened to them previously when getting into a few other Icelandic musicians so more or less knew their deal already, though I wasn't super familiar with this album specifically. This is the first album on here that wasn't in English, so that obviously makes it pretty unique off the bat. This one is mostly in Icelandic I believe, but they also apparently sing in made up words that kind of sound like Icelandic sometimes? I don't quite get that. That said, they are obviously incredibly talented musicians. I do frequently like their sound, and the ambient noise style (or as Spotify says, "cosmic post-rock creations", whatever that means) can make for good listening (even just as background noise). I don't think I'm quite as big on them as some others are, but I think where I land is that it's generally interesting stuff, very unique, and mostly enjoyable. This is another one that's probably a 3.5 for me, but it's unique and interesting enough that I'll round up. Favorite song: Svefn-g-englar Other: Ny batterí, Vidrar Vel til Loftárása, Olsen Olsen, Avalon 10/30/23
A stunning album all the way through. The ambient stretches between musical swells works perfectly to tie all the tracks to gather and gives you a reflective rest before diving back in.
10/27/23. Very interesting sounding album, almost like contemporary and classical blended together, and interesting vocals. May listen again to get more familiar, mostly felt like background music.
Ethereal - very relaxing. I could listen to this before bedtime. 4 out of 5
Makes me feel insignificant in a good way. No one listens to lyrics anyway, so being in a language I don't understand lets me focus more on the melody.
Thoroughly enjoyed. Had a Pink Floyd vibe.
Molto interessante. Atmosfera melodica e sognante, non proprio il mio genere ma apprezzabile.
Dreamy and beautiful.
This album was exactly what this type of exercise was meant for. It was something I never would have discovered on my own. At first I didn't really care for it but as the album progressed it grew on me and I ended up enjoying it and has me curious to explore more music from this group.
Ethereal and moving
Something I know absolutely nothing about! Wow! This is pretty beautifully arranged, mellow, ethereal, ambient shoegaze. I have no idea what they're saying. I imagine myself sitting in cold, blasting this music, watching the northern lights in the sky. Maybe it helps to read that these guys are Icelandic. Best Track: Svefn-g-englar
Great sonics and harmonics, would be cool to listen to when the sun is rising.
Puts you to sleep or scores your ending scene murder
It’s been several years since I have revisited this album. I was a freshman in college when I discovered it, although it had come out 2 years before. I thought it was revolutionary then. All these years later, I still find it moving and beautiful at times, meandering and repetitive at other times. I think all of these things are true. I do think this album was revolutionary at the time, but maybe I don’t love it anymore. It makes it hard to grade objectively. There is a lot here to like and there still isn’t anything quite like it.
Very soothing and melodic. Helped me get quite a bit of work done at the computer.
Great alternative album from an Icelandic band. Pretty chill and mellow.
Atmospheric songs that are more like suites. Similar in tone to Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Ouvi uma vez, e gostei! A música que mais gostei foi a staralfur. De resto, apesar de não haver mais nenhuma música stand out, eu poria isto como música de fundo para muita coisa
DIdn't like is as much as Takk
Good slow builds
3.5/5
Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós
Memories of studying in high school
Great album; sometimes made me nervous. Provides distorted focus. <3
Melancholy but relaxing. Something a bit cathartic. Wonderful for rainy days or focusing for work.

Spacey, emotional, unique music but definitely not for everyone. Great for what is though.
Really liked this one. Wish I could understand the lyrics, but the vibes are on point. I appreciate the extended cuts that seem to transport you to another world. The music and the instruments used kind of remind me of a softer version of Massive Attack. Production and mixing are extremely well done and you can tell the group was meticulous when putting this album together. It sounds like they have used a very wide variety of instruments throughout the tracks, ranging from strings and horns to electric/acoustic guitar to piano to synths, and incorporating vocal harmonies/choral phrases. Fave tracks: Olsen olsen, Ny batteri (best experienced cover to cover)
Really beautiful album, I love the awe-inspiring sound of post rock. I do find that the tracks tend to become a bit indistinguishable though as I regard the album as whole instead of a collection of tracks. Fav Tracks: N/A
Great album. Beautiful music. It all felt blended together so that makes it difficult to review on specific songs, but I really felt like it was a great, slow, and gorgeously ambient album.
love the ethereal otherworldly sounds. no idea what it is about but it sounds fabulous.
Deep chill music. Might make one feel claustrophobic!
Interplanetary whales sing love songs
Loved it
Interesting, beautiful sound. I love the vibes, but I don’t like how long every song is. It builds well, but I kind of got bored.
Took a while for me to warm upto. Pretty good album, slow and relaxing
Intro: 7.5/10 - warm bath as an introduction to this masterpiece of an album Svefn-g-englar: 10/10 - an epic dream Staràlfur: 9.5/10 Flugufrelsarinn: 8/10 Ný batteri: 9/10 Hjartað hamast (bamm bamm bamm): 8/10 Viðrar vel til loftárása: 9.5/10 Olsen Olsen: 9/10 Ágætis byrjun: 8.5/10 Avalon: 8/10 Overall: 8.7/10 - Fantastic album, one of the best ever made
Неплохой шум, но лучше когда только инструмент
- Svefn-g-englar feels like ascending to another plane of cosmic consciousness. - Hjartao hamast goes so much harder than I expected from these guys. - What the fuck happened to post-rock? I feel like in the 2000s you couldnt look at an Album Of The Year list without hitting like 5 of these albums, and now they just don't exist in the discourse. - On first listen, I'd say this runs out of steam a bit in the final stretch; that could easily change, though, and the rest is just absurdly beautiful.
Awesome!
Beautiful Icelandic post- rock ambient.
Just beautiful...
Good post rock album, cool sound on a lot of the vocals and the tracks where it ramps up a bit we’re really good
beautifully ambient - perfect 1am listening experience
Classic
Really good album.
This album was pretty good, it was beautiful and unintelligible. My main issue is that the only issue they seem to be able to write is melancholy. A complicated emotion, but they nail it. After achieving this, they don't really go anywhere. They touch other levels of energy and emotion, but can't quite seem to break away from melancholy. Not to say that it's completely repetitive, but the range could be improved upon. No complaints otherwise. 4/5
I don't speak Icelandic, so my take on this album is purely sonic and not linguistic. Listening to the first part of this album is like laying out among the grass on a late summer day, looking up at the sky, watching the clouds go by as a gentle breeze cools off your body from the warm touch of the sun. It's relaxing, it coaxes you into reflecting back upon the summer—and the summers before it, but it's also melancholy—another summer is nearly over, and there just wasn't enough time to live. The second part of the album hits, and it's back to school, back to the grind, and everything is overwhelming all over again. There's too many choices, too much information, everything is rushed, there's anger and disappointment. Maybe it's a few years later, and it's commuting to and from the office, or shuttling children between school and extra curricular activities. Grocery shopping, car repairs, rent—responsibilities. However, there's still the recent memory of the summer, and it creeps back in and offers encouragement—there is hope of new opportunities and unexpected possibilities. Maybe you meet some new friends, or that special someone. Maybe some of your old friends seem a little bit different, a little bit older, a little bit wiser. Maybe it's a new child , creating and enjoying new experiences with dear friends, or participating in an exciting profession or mission that is changing the world. And then you arrive at the last track, and as you settle into that final shavasana as life fades away from your body, you realize what you knew all along: life wasn't just those summers, it wasn't just those highlights, it was all the bits and pieces in between that mattered, too. This is solid music.
Creative and strangely moving at times. The sound they created became so familiar in later years, creating the background for the slow alternative singer songwriter rock of the 2000’s. Some songs work better than others, though. While the first two full songs are special and unique, the third is unremarkable and sounds like soundtrack music.
There’s an ethereal beauty to be found in these deep, dark Icelandic waters, provided you’re in the right mood to go diving for them.
Unique and very listenable despite the lack of understanding of the words.
I Was not expecting Ágætis Byrjun to be this good. All of the elements come together to create an atmosphere that is womb-like and peaceful. Even though I couldn't understand a word, the lead singer's voice felt calming and added to the music. If you haven't listened to it yet, I strongly urge you to give it a try. Only fault is that some songs were too long, and lost my attention.
Odd music, but a cool one
When it comes to Sigur Rós, I am really only familiar with ( ) which was released after this album. This album is just what I was expecting though, just an absolutely beautiful and visceral auditory experience. Excellent release from an excellent band.
Beautifully Hypnotic .
Very chill, soothing, interesting to listen to. It was hard to keep my full attention on it but when I did it was absolutely worth it.
I thought this would be a total dud. I was wrong. Actually interesting electronic, kind of ambient, weird music. Much much better than I anticipated. Will I ever listen again - probably not. Was it good one time - definitely.
great
This was nigh unlistenable through my laptop speakers (I really couldn't distinguish any depth of sound at all), but once I got off my lazy ass to grab the good stuff it was a much more rewarding listening experience. In fact, the louder you can make this album, the better. The impact really scales. I had a lot going on today so looking up the English translation of the lyrics wasnt in the cards, so I'm reviewing everything but. Sigur Ros are the masters of ambience and as far as accessibility goes, I can digest a whole lot more of this than I can Bjork. Surprising range of sounds and textures and genres they pull from but still sounds cohesive. Great album to fall asleep to. I liked this album the longer it went on - this is the first where I was blah on it at the outset but by the end it had truly won me over. I know the tracks are fairly long but I didnt feel like they got boring before they ended. I genuinely think it helps that I was physically exhausted and overheated when I first started listening to the record - it was really soothing. I think the 6th track was my favorite, Hjartad hamast (just pretend that is using the correct letters from Icelandic).
BEST SONGS: -Flugufrelsarinn -Hjartao hamast
Pretty sick. Atmospheric is definitely the word
I feel as if I'm not listening to this in the correct mood. It needs to be listened to at night with headphones, blindfold and some rain to set the mood. It's definitely different but I like it. This is why I love 1001 albums.
Despite the fact that I have no idea what they are saying, the music here is so beautiful. Whether they’re speaking Icelandic, jibberish, or nothing at all, they evoke such a broad range of emotions. Can see why this album has been used so heavily in film soundtracks, it just helps to illustrate the complexity and beauty of life.
Beautiful ambient that very cleverly subverts the listeners idea of the genre by building up to something bigger on its best songs
Música islandesa así como ambiental. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
I get scandinavian music. It's harsh like their weather and beautiful like their landscapes.
This took me somewhere. Never really heard anything like it
This album is like some ancient alien technology shit. Its beautiful and strange, and I dont understand it in the slightest. 4/5
Very nice
I listened to their first album before this one since the wiki noted the huge departure from the first to the second album. And wow, they really did make a huge change. And for the better. This band is so unique. Dreamy and etherial. No one like them.
The past couple of days have been an exercise in defining perception and memory. My memories of Sigur Ros are Hopipolla (fantastic song but later than this) and going into a club in Park City in 2003 (with some of you folks, you know who you are) and them playing on stage. A couple of events this weekend have made me question perception and memories and have me doubt myself to the nth degree. So when this popped up I was ready to disbelieve those memories and think that band in Utah was a different band, maybe similar or a tribute. In fact, was I even there? But thanks to the good old InterWeb I looked up a gig list and it WAS Sigur Ros. I can trust that memory at least. I can’t say they were the most scintillating live band but they did contribute to a more carefree time infused with great memories. Today has been frustrating and stressful but this Dream Pop managed to keep me calm and relaxed and put me in a perfect mood to deal with daily shite! For that I am very grateful. Dream Pop does sound like illegal candy though. It’s probably a 3.5 but a much needed vibe so let’s go…
I enjoyed this, though there was a lot of it. Cut this down by 20 minutes and you got me. But great sounds and atmospherics. Matt says they're amazing live. it's a 3.5 as-is, but I'll round up just cause I like the cut of their jib
I can't remember how Sigur Rós came into my life but when they did it was on repeat. Clearly the ethereal, fairy-like quality grabbed a lot of folks. While I love these sounds, music, and language I don't understand in the background at anytime, I can say it's not a great gig to see live. Jen and I saw a documentary that was basically just a live performance and as much as we love Sigur Rós, the one place they don't excel is live.
7/10
shoutout to all the guys in college that were like "duude you gotta listen to sigur rós! They're so trippy and relaxing!" because they were mostly right about this. I'm not always in the right mood for this sorta thing, but when I am, it's good to put on.
Very atmospheric dreamy post rock, it does kinda sound like its from iceland.. Must have been very influential on other more recent albums which I like, but it's also a very solid album on its own.
Soothing orchestral background music 3.5 stars
Highlights: Ný batterí, Olsen Olsen
Gonna avoid genres here but this a wonderful dreamy Icelandic album that opened my mind and heart some 24 years ago. I've since seen them on 5 tours. Magical production glorious tunes and emotional heft. Head says 4. Heart says 5.
This was really nice! I didn't expect to recognize songs on it but I did. Just can't place where from. This is going into the rotation.
Sigur Ros is a name I’ve been hearing for years in the post rock circle. Never really bothered to check them out until now of course. This record is very atmospheric. There are some great orchestral highs on here which sound great. Good listen overall.
I don't understand this album but I like it.
Ultra comfortable background music
If Radiohead met Air
Sigur Ros is a band I've been meaning to check out for probably 15 years now, but I regret to say that this is the first album of theirs that I've listened to. I certainly should not have waited this long, as this is a lovely listen all the way through. I don't understand a word they're saying, and would likely delve deeper into translations on further listens. But even just musically, it's enough. I will be back.
Ethereal strangeness and violin bow guitar. Gotta love Sigur Ros.
Spacey as fuck
Eerie, but beautiful.
don't speak icelandic but album is pure vibes
Some of this really sucks you in and washes over you, I'm surprised at how much I like this given how put off I am by some of their newer stuff.
Very artistic. Not bad.
This is one of the albums you should listen to with your headphones on or with the best speakers. I highly recommend listening while the sun is setting or during the night. The album is really good, it has some magic in it, but I couldn't yet fall in love with it. I wonder why it's categorised as a rock album.
du va med på sigur ros på bergenfest sant? da va den dagen er såg kygo utenfor strippeklubben om eg huske rett
It feels almost wrong to listen to this album on the one of the hottest NYC days in April on record. Probably the album I most associate with wintertime. It's beautiful, calming, and transfixing even though I can't understand a single word. Gorgeous. 4.5/5
Genres: Post-rock, dream pop, ambient, art rock, shoegazing Formed: Reykjavík, Iceland in 1994 Run time: 10 songs, 1 hour, 11 min Sigur Rós means “Victory Rose” and Ágætis Byrjun is Icelandic for, “A good beginning”. I don’t speak Icelandic so I’ve no idea what they are saying. (They could be talking about muck spreading.) The overall sound is very chilled, relaxed, and ethereal. The least played song on the album has almost 2.5M plays on Spotify. The most played over 33M. My Rating: ****
Fantastic album. I prefer () but this band puts out great music always.
Chill!
Beautiful meditative soundscapes, unique and transporting. Sigur Rós are a delight.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Svefn-g-englar, Ny batteri
A beautiful haunting album. In the right mood this album is lovely.
Is this some of the weirdest shit I’ve ever heard? Yes. It’s indecipherable madness. It’s also an absolutely gorgeous piece of music from top to bottom. A lesson in mood and vibe all wrapped in some weird language none of us will ever be able to decode.
Fav tracks: Svefn-g-englar, Olsen Olsen, Ágætis Byrjun
Makes me want to be in a cool snowy climate, listening to this
I must re-listen it. It was something different and needed quite to listen to.
Really beautiful
For a small island of only about 375,000 people Iceland really punches above its weight. Maybe because it's so isolated it produces really unique music. Their most famous export is probably Bjork, love her or hate her, but you have to admit she's original. Gus Gus, Olafur Arnaulds, Emiliana Torrini, Of Monsters and Men are also great Icelandic artists. But my all time favourite from that island is Múm - hard to describe their music, maybe indietronica, very ethereal and dreamy at times, similar vibe as Sigur Ros. It's too bad that they're not on this list. I think Sigur Ros is still decent and they have some very good songs and sonic tapestries here. It doesn't matter that we can't understand Jon Birgisson's vocals because he's imparting a mood with the wall of sound with his cello bowed guitar. This album is a solid 3 for me, but I'm bumping it up another star to compensate for the egregious omission of so many other Icelandic artists from the list.
Yes, siri, I would like to reexperience the sounds of being born luminescent and with ease from the infinite gentle fluids of the universe.
I don’t know why I never listened to this album. It somehow totally passed me by. I listened to some later Sigur Ros albums, but I never felt like I was in the mood for what I *thought* this album would be. I thought it would be mostly ambient, sleepy, uninteresting, long, drawn out. There are times for this, but I never found myself at that particular juncture. Forcing myself to put this on today, I was stunned… it’s way, way more deep and inventive than I thought it would be. There’s some real dynamics in the music… the first few are what Sigur Ros are known for, ambient-leaning post rock music that’s contemplative, slow, dramatic. But there are… other sounds on here! And I loved those other sounds just as much. There are songs that are electric, songs that are really stripped back. Some utterly beautiful horn and string arrangements which I can’t get enough of. And the haunting vocals… so weirdly out of place, but somehow adding contrast. I couldn’t help but think about all of the buzzing, atonal guitars behind all of this music, and how that’s such a good choice for a mainly ambient album. It’s contrast. We’ve heard a bunch of late 80s rock recently, where the noisy, buzzy guitar always threatens to overtake the beautiful music. There’s something of that here, and I think that’s why this isn’t just another ambient-influenced record. It’s genuinely it’s own world, and it pulls you in deep. 4/5
I have no idea what to make of this. This is not what I would usually listen to as I like music more fit for active listening and most of this album is rather atmospheric. I was torn between 2 and 4 out of 5 the whole time. Eventually I decided to give it a better grade. I think it was a good listening experience and while I don't see myself going back to it too often it was definitely not as boring for me as I thought while listening to the third song. It got way more accessible afterwards. Overall the atmosphere of the entire album was amazing and worth this listen. Songs I Really Liked: Flugufrelsarinn, Ný batterí, Ágætis byrjun
Loved this album! Perfect for Sunday mornings, relaxing strolls with the pup, and grabbing a rag and cleaning.
An album for being in a melodic sound atmosphere. Have listened to his others, cool to hear one of the first big ones he made.
Genre: Experimental, post-rock, psychedelic. Review: Gentle start, very relaxing and soothing. Potential work from home music. Last 3-4 tracks were extremely good, especially the title track. Rating: 8/10
very interesting post-rock album - 8/10
si je ne mets pas 5 c'est parce que la pochette m'angoisse et que je ne veux pas la voir sur mon profil mais le coeur y est
A delightful easy listen.
Very slow and smooth. It sounds like the soundtrack to a very dramatic movie. I usually don't have the patience for this kind of music, but this record is actually quite good. Favorite song: Olsen Olsen
Despite not understanding a single word, I really enjoyed the dream pop aspect of this album. 4/5. Favorite Track: Flugufrelsarinn
Beautiful and atmospheric with some of the best orchestration on record. There are some bits that don't quite work for me and sometimes the downtime between those swells of strings can feel excessive, but that's really just nitpicking
Me gusto, pero esta en sueco. Los ambientes que se generan son interesantísimos y no le encuentro explicación de lo que lograron sonoramente en 1990
Like very chill version of techno. I liked it but not sure how much I will listen to it in the future.
7.5/10. Might be better if I understood Icelandic. Or it might be worse. Beautiful atmosphere though.
This album is a beacon and a buoy, and you, in the dark yet glimmering waters, are invited to swim around it, explore it, enjoy it, and immerse yourself in its ocean. This album is the elf who stares back at you through your own eyes when you look in the mirror late at night, when you need sleep but cannot find it. This album is an airstrike on the finest day you've ever seen.
I’ve loved this album ever since I tracked it down after hearing Starálfur in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. I was a weird kid. Still love that movie and this song. Makes me teary eyed. The rest of the album never hits that height, but is still a blast, mixing ethereal sounds with post-rock, jazz, and all kinds of goofy sounds.
Solid album. Sigur has a bright future. 4/5
Good times and great classic hits. 2CCC
Actually really liked this - can see why it’s on the list Really chill vibes May have to go to Reykjavík for a weekend now!
Mmmmm... delicious dreampop-ish Radiohead with light-mode on.
Mix of explosions in the sky and early radiohead. Absolutely killer, will dive into them
This could be important. As heuristics go, sorting and comparison are two of the common ones, called on to make sense of a world full of new things. Brain goes straight to comparison mode to make sense of this, woman’s voice, rich soundscape, deep feelings, must be Portishead right? Even the blue white artwork from the cover makes me think “Dummy”. Is it a lesser Portishead?, maybe, but if I had grown up listening to it in the 90s it probably would have stuck with me. Glad I found this, glad enough to buy it on vinyl today.
There is some absolutely gorgeous music on this album. Intimate at times and grandiose at others always tasteful and beautifully executed. It took me some time to come to appreciate this album but once it grabs hold it holds on tight. 4 stars
Bosd
Never thought I'd say this, but sounds dated in its own way. Still, paves the way for greatness to come.
Альбом можно раскидать на саундтреки к фильмам любого жанра. Очень мелодичный эмбиент с разными настроениями. Группа звучит как оркестр, что приятно слушать. Буду слушать как минимум в подборке музыки для сна.
Really mellow so you def need to be in some sort of mood for this album
B.E.A.UTIFUL
Something about their style, despite being so ethereal, is also structured, and keeps many of these very long songs from feeling long. You can almost see the volcanoes and black sand beaches of Iceland.
Cerebral. Like drifting in the deep sea.
Love it. Ambient and Orchestral and plain odd I found it a joy to listen to. For every hater out there there is a lover.
Die Stimme nervt manchmal bisschen, aber insgesamt schön atmosphärisch und zugleich intensiv wie entspannend. Gehört auf jeden Fall in die "1001 Albums"-Liste.
This record cast a spell from the first listen and at once confounded and captivated so many different types of music fans, who were drawn to the sheer originality or the rich spiritual tones. The haunting yet comforting vocals, the balance of dreaminess and power, the playing for mysticism or contemplation – all of it was (and still is) massively affecting. Whether it's post-rock or something else matters not – the case for it being rock would have to do with SR being an artier version of Pink Floyd, one supposes; but whatever it is, it's just brilliant and much more powerful than so much power-cord-driven rock.
Loved this album, it is a beautiful composition of spacey, groove rock.
Sehr atmosphärisches Album. Gerne mehr davon!
Very chill and ethereal
I honestly had trouble starting awake through this. It's beautiful, but verging on the medicinal.
Feels like I’m roam the tranquil, vast landscapes of Iceland
only complaint i have is that my attention span is quite short so the length of some of the songs was a little bit of a test for me. the sound is beautiful though!
4.4/5 interesting Icelandic atmospheric
Nice meditative music. Haven’t heard anything like this before
A very pretty album, I’d listen to more from them
3.9
J'ai bien aimé l'ambiance et la production de cet album. Pour reprendre une remarque d'un autre abonné, c'est vraiment le genre d'album et de découverte que l'on s'attend lorsque l'on fait l'exercice de cette liste. 4.5
Worth a revisit
What in the world is this going to be? OK intro is beautiful but also sounds like it is being played backwards. Second song seems like something I'd hear at a water based spa on the moon? I'm digging it. Staralfur is lovely and I like Olsen olsen quite a bit. However, to be honest, 71 minutes straight is perhaps a bit much.
Ranging from dark and soaring epics to the sweet and tuneful tite cut and it’s all about ambiences and textures throughout. Seemed one-of-a-kind when it came out and fascinated everyone, putting Cool Icelandia back on the map. The scale and dreaminess hold up pretty well.
Absolutely ethereal. Perfect for a walk on a fall day.
This album scratches and itch in my brain that I didn't know I had. I love the way it would fit ever-so-perfectly into a film's soundtrack. Its moody and stormy, perfect for the how I'm feeling today. This is also the first album this website generated for me, and I could not be happier.
Interesting music that I had never heard of but kept me listening.
Breaking: Swag Discovered In Iceland
Favourite Song - Staralfur One for karaoke - None because I have no idea what they’re saying One for a run - Olsen Olsen An album I never thought you be able to run to but here I am with proper sore legs and it was great
Can wait til the version with subtitles comes out. The more I play it the more I like it. Cover art 3/5
Sigur Ros – Agaetis byrjun Icelandic 90’s “post rock”. No idea what to expect. - Intro – More a contemplative soundscape than a full song. A solid intro to the rest. Best word I’ve found to describe the sound is ethereal. - Svefn-g-englar – The title translates to “sleep angels” or “sleepwalkers”. Calm instrumentation with an echoing key tone. Apparently, the main sound comes from a cello bow against guitar strings. The album title translates to “a good start” and this track is apparently about an infant being born (from the infant’s perspective). It’s a ten minute track with a slow pace, almost inaudible vocals, and gentle soundscape. The shift with drums coming in coincides with the “explosion” of birth . Interesting concept and strong execution in creating a soothing, almost hypnotic soundscape. Color me impressed. Only part I don’t like is the rapid heartbeats at the end. - Staralfur – “A staring elf”. Tells the story of a child meeting an elf in their bedroom. Keeps the beautiful instrumentation but has a bit of a brighter tone and more prominent vocals. The pulsing beat at 3:14 gives the song a second phase, keeping interest even with the otherwise somewhat monotonous (albeit beautiful) sounds. It’s pretty, but I don’t think it’s one I’d casually listen to. I like it, though. The last 50 sec are kinda wasted though. - Flugufrelsarinn – It’s about…a shipwreck? Or something? Lots of water imagery. Some of the vocal parts are a bit dodgy, but overall still a beauitiful soundscape. - Ny Batteri – I like this one a lot. Lyrics are pretty dark depiction of loneliness. Sound is mournful but expressive, and a bit more intense than prior tracks. Didn’t need to be 8:10, but it’s overall solid. - Hjartath hamast – Backing vocals give this one a bit of a different air. It’s not my favorite track, but I like the keys. It’s still quite good. - Vithar vel til loftarasa – Piano led track. The other 10+ minute track. The outro is absolutely gorgeous. - Olsen Olsen – vocals take abackground role again. This one is pretty one not for the first 5 minutes, then the last three do something completely different. Not my fave. - Agaetis byrjun – The title track. Begins with snare drags and piano intro. It’s much the same as their other stuff. It’s good, but by this point it’s kind of getting old. This album is really long. It’s actually grown on me just by listening though. It’s about the band’s feelings going into writing this ablum and their experience in making it. Nice and self-reflective. Like most of the album, very chill. - Avalon – Slow, dragged out instrumental track. It’s a decent ending to the album. Biggest criticism is that they just need to know when to end their songs lol. What they really excel at is creating a soundscape. The lyrics oftentimes are very poetic, sometimes to the point of defying all meaning. In that sense, being in a different language isn’t really a problem since it allows the listener even more to assign their own emotions and meaning to the sound. It’s a sound that I can’t really take a full hour fifteen of, though. In small doses, it’s beautiful. Over the full thing, it gets a tad old. Still great on the whole. As a whole, it’s very good quality, but due to the length of the songs and the rather low-key tone, I’m not sure I’d just casually listen to most of this. Top Tracks: - Svefn-g-englar – Beautiful and intriguing 10 minute eipc - Ny Batteri – Mega depressing but really nice to listen to. - Vithar vel til loftarasa – Another ten minute epic with some absolutely goregeous parts - Agaetis bryjun – Nice reflection on the band’s writing of this album.
Mellow and atmospheric, but also mature.
I occasionally listen to CBC radio’s « The Signal » when I’m forced to drive late at night. I’ve always found the music intriguing, often beautiful, and would wonder what genre it belong’s to. Well, discovering Sigur Rós and reading about the band has led me into the world of post-rock, and I find myself fascinated. This is creative, unexpected, enchanting and challenging. I will be listening to more of their work ab=nd to others of their ilk.
Incredible album. I usually don't enjoy slower more experimental music, but this was an incredible experience to listen to. 4/5
Skön platta som jag hört enstaka låtar från innan men inte lyssnat genom hela ngn gång.
4.5/5. Now THIS is what I call music.
Classic album. At its best when it's not just icelandic whining into a microphone. 4.5/5
Really like their sound.
I found it pretty awesome. Each song is very meticulously constructed and builds so well. The vocals are both haunting and beautiful and really get the most out of the instrumental. 8/10
Really cool. Sounds like Iceland. I couldn't understand the lyrics but there was a sort of uncanny valley feel where it felt like I could almost understand. A very surreal experience.
I'm a major Sigur Rós fan, but despite popular opinion amongst fans, "Ágætis byrjun" is only my third favourite entry in the band's discography behind "Takk..." and "( )". I just have a preference towards their records with a bit more grandeur and variation of sound. Having said that, it is undeniable that "Ágætis byrjun" is a work of beauty and a monumental contribution to the post-rock scene. It is remarkable how much emotion Jónsi and the rest of the group are able to convey to so many fans around the world who can't even understand a word of their lyrics - a true testament to the band's mastery of their craft and the universal power of music. I am very tempted to give this album a 5, because even though it isn't my favourite of their albums, it's still very close to perfection. I am however going to refrain due to my incredibly unpopular opinion that "Svefn-g-englar" slightly overstays its welcome, being a bit too monotonous to justify its ten minute run time. Standout tracks: "Starálfur", "Flugufrelsarinn", "Ný batterí", "Viðrar vel til loftárása", "Olsen olsen" and "Ágætis byrjun"
An amazing experience even though I don’t understand the words.
Best Song: Viðrar vel til loftárása. I really liked the crescendo at around 8:00, and then the sort of cacophonous descent into madness at the end of the song. Worst Song: Hjartað hamast (bamm bamm bamm). That feedback audio at the end of the track almost blew out my speakers, and really didn't fit with the rest of the song (or album). Overall: A difficult album to rate. I can tell that my enjoyment would really depend on my mood at the time of listening. Feels like an excellent album to listen to while reading, or otherwise just relaxing. Best suited for evenings and rainy days.
Aeschau oahhadoaux! Gombasaavid Fuurlzixavin stoko. Yo kaieavou a siyin sarinavi lesuaudvoo. That's what this album sounds like. But somehow...I still liked it. I can't explain why it works - but it's not a total success because I am regularly removed from the experience because of the nonsense language, but musically, there's a lot to admire here. I want to give it a 3.5, but I'll score it a 4 officially.
This is an interesting listen. Didn’t know them before listening. There was a lot o going on.
Har aldri gitt de der en sjanse. Innser nå at det er good shit.
Similar to what i thought it would spund like, but with more feeling. Good music to yoga to.
Truly beautiful. But also nothing that really digs into my memory, like () has.
Interessant album. In het begin voelde ik de sfeer van AIR, maar later waande ik me als bezoeker van een klassiek concert met violen. Geen idee waarom dit een "rock" band is/was, maar deze muziek bevalt mij meer. ****
Remarkable dream-pop, with delicate and stunning merry-go-rounds of sounds. (7/10) FT: Svefn-g-englar
Ooh cool cover… The album opens with an intro track a nice chant to set the albums scene. Svefn-g-englar is the first proper song a 10 minute long epic ( there are a lot of long songs on here) it’s a dreamy, relaxing well produced effort where I can see the appeal really clearly for but I guess i’am not really in the mind frame for a song like this. Starálfur is a 6 minuter roughly translating to staring elf has some brilliant string work on it I do prefer this song though as the singer’s voice is slightly more present and the raw guitar bit is kinda cool. The next song up is Flugufrelsarinn sounds decent it has a moodier feel to it and the vocals sound like they’re trapped in a storm. The music has just kinda clicked with me now! Song 5 is Ný batterí which starts with this blissful noise just gently popping out until 2 minutes in where the vocals come in smoothly and gently singing almost giving the feeling of laying on a tranquil beach. Then we have got Hjartað hamast (bamm bamm bamm) translating to The heart pounds (boom, boom, boom) it brings in more energy than the last ones with jazzy pianos backed by some haunted belch when the vocals come in most of that goes and instead we’re greeted by the normal vocals and this angelic backing that really makes the track. Next is the album’s longest track Viðrar vel til loftárása a song that does take it’s time to get going but after the first two minutes and those strings come in it gives off a true sense of euphoria which only heightens when the vocals come in making it sound really emotional even if I don’t understand Icelandic . Olsen Olsen is next a quite angelic track but still with a trance like bass line and at points this gentle flute playing and string work. Now we have the title track Ágætis byrjun is a guitar based song and the highlight for drumming it’s great but at this point I kinda feel out of the trance the album placed earlier getting tired of the track half way through. The album closes with Avalon a very unique spectacle indeed being a kinda sinister sounding instrumental piece, I don’t love it but it’s good. You really have to be in the right frame of mind for this album and I was at points but not enough to love the whole thing. Also while I’am not usually a fan of albums with really short track-lists this should’ve been more like 8 songs with the track length.
4, makes me feel like a single celled organism
Good album, was everywhere for a while, but the songs stil hold up. Very relaxing, very chilled, very enjoyable in a low key way. Svefn-g-englar probably my favourite, along with the title track. 4 🌟
20th May 2022 (actually the 20th) Started on the Friday but finished on Monday morning cos we had book club Friday, Adna Joe Meg Em Anna Lewis Nathan round Saturday and recovery Sunday. Ethereal, euphoric and unique.
Symphonic post-rock at its finest, an enveloping hour and ten minutes of warm, gazey guitar and ethereal vocals that consumes the entirety of the soundstage. Not easy listening by any means - this is an LP that requires full playback for the best experience, but rewards those willing to listen.
Comfy post rock, might last for a little too long.
I really enjoyed this for about 40 minutes. Felt slightly too long, but I could see how it'd fit better when listening in a more relaxing situation. I guess I like post-rock much more than post-punk lol.
Great record.
Very nice album. I'd heard it before, but not in a long time.
This is a stone-cold classic, a mandatory post- jam. 4.5
Wonderful
Really enjoyed this. Heard various tracks before and clearly just wasn’t in the right mood. Love the feel of it as a while album and the interplay between the music and the other sound textures. One to play again.
Ritualistic Space Yodeling
Fancy listening to a man sing in a made up language? Then this is the album for you. Typical adjectives for this album seem to be "ethereal" and "deep". The instrumentals are great but unfortunately the yelping of the singer can get a bit grating. Best Tracks: Svefn-g-englar; Staralfur;

Main character music. This is for when you're starring in your own movie, experiencing all the waves of deep joy and sorrow, staring out a bus window while you reflect on all the big moments of your life.
Really nice, athmospheric and full of emotions but I feel that it is easier for me to use it as background music than actively listening to it.
Overall, I consider this band to be a little to ethereal for their own good, but I've always liked this album and would rank it with the best of post-rock.
A sad-themed album. My wife couldn't stand listening to it.
Pretty dope 5
Soo good.
