Reviews (page 3 of 10)

Yes. From the first song. Yes

There's really nothing quite like what they do, and I've always loved their ability to know their place in the general world of hip hop and they play into that. They're silly white dudes who lean into that aspect in their music at the same time as paying homage to the the genre as a whole. A perfect example of skill and self awareness meshing to create something wholly unique, so sick

Very nice, immersive experience. 5/5

3/1/24. Always loved this album and still love it to this day, the Avalanches are one of my favorite artists! Just an enjoyable, fun listen from front to back for any occasion.

Wow, amazing. Ahead of its time.

Fun, dancy, a little weird too

This album is absolutely magical. Perfect energy throughout. Incredible creativity in building a fun and interesting soundscape almost entirely through sampling. I've known frontier psychiatrist for years and had no idea how much I was missing in the other tracks. Will definitely return to this regularly.

You're a nut! You're crazy in the coconut! A certified 2000s indie classic! Listened many times before and it's a treat. Along with DJ Shadow's ...Endtroducing, it brought head-nodding plunderphonics to the headphones of many a listener of its era and beyond. Absolutely love this record. "Frontier Psychiatry" is the track I quote without hesitation when the mood strikes me. That boy needs therapy.

My kind of indy.

The first song on this album "Since I Left You" is really nice! I added it to my liked song list! I ended up saving the entire album to my saved playlists in Spotify. This album is 10/10. This is one of my favorite genres of albums.

I knew the titular track, and liked it, but didn't realise how much the rest of the album bangs. It's great. Really like the way it's mixed almost like a DJ set as well.

The only album you'll ever need.

Loved this album. Dreamy but not samey. Musical and creative. On a good stereo it sounds incredible.

Surprised. Fantastic.

Loved this, an instant personal favourite. Wouldn't have thought of listening to this but very happy to get this recommendation.

Un disco muy entretenido. Completamente ambience. Crea distintos escenarios. Cada canción engancha con la siguiente. Por momentos te sentís en una fiesta lujosa, pero con la tranquilidad de estar en tu casa sin estar rodeado de gente 😄

one of my favvvvvs from high school. listening to this album so loud with my over ear headphones at all hours of the day. gave myself tinnitus lol. some tracks hit super new and different now that its been like ten years of listening and loving electronic and sample based music, etoh in particular. just truly an incredible record

Masterpiece

Great listen. Sample based music with each track blending into the next. Best song: Frontier psychiatrist

Love this album.

I liked this album much more than I expected to. The sampled and recut vibe works here. Not something I’d throw on to listen to intently, but excellent background vibes.

Lively and fresh! Nothing quite like this!

Very good. Own it

Amazing! Never would have guessed that I would like it!

Everything is a remix - even as instrumentation evolves in the digital age, most of the melodies, choruses, and overall tracks we hear are interpolating that which came before. Why not, then, simply take the past (3500 pieces of it) and make a pastiche that becomes completely new? While The Avalanches themselves have moved on from plunderphonics in their later releases, the impact of the genre (and mainly this one album if we’re being honest) is still felt today as sampling becomes a larger and larger part of popular music. This LP is at once accessible and a bit incomprehensible – it’s hard to find footing at first when it comes to genre, rhythm, and feel as the title track builds itself out of the ether. Once you’re locked into the album’s granular logic, though, everything makes sense. Entire rhythm sections appear out of countless constituent pieces, soul samples combine to form a makeshift vocal feature, melodic flourishes repurposed out of random vocal and instrumental bits pop in and out in perfect placement. While each individual track creates its own little world, the album is best experienced as a cohesive musical sea, waves of creatively used samples coming in and out at regular rhythms. While the overarching concept seems a bit loose (tropical heartbreak? Therapy vacation?) compared to The Avalanches' later opus 'Wildflower', it’s still a logically and organically defined world all its own. I’ve only handed out one 5-star rating for every 100 albums on this project which, by my own admission, is a bit low and harsh on some great musical statements that have been included here. However, a perfect album is a rare thing, much less an LP that redefines what music itself can be. It may seem an odd comparison, but this album reminds me of ‘Loveless’ in how it opened an entirely new frontier in instrumentation. Just like the hazy, extreme guitar on that album redefined what an entire instrument could do, so too did 'Since I Left You’ open the door to building entire worlds out of seemingly disparate pieces, a promise that is only now being made good on with more experimental electronic production. No other album, though, has reached the level the fullness and purely organic wonder this LP set at the turn of the millennium, and I’m simply thankful to live in a world where even one artistic statement of this level exists.

Good memories - this is another album which transports me to another time and place! I remember this album being huge in 2000/01 in Australia - and I love some home grown talent! I knew I was going to enjoy this one, yes it's a bit repetitive and there are more samples than you can poke a stick at, but it's pretty fun and its great chill background music. It was the perfect thing get me back into the workflow of 2024! I'm feeling generous, 5 stars Fave track: ETOH

An album I listen to often. The sampling is so cool.

Great sampling record

A+++++++++++++

banger, but obviously gets a little repetitive, i wish they had more of the talking stuff like the animals talk w parrots or the thing about the kid being expelled

Bordered on a 4 or 5 with this one. I really enjoyed it and it was an amazing discovery. Tilted it forward.

Give me more

Amazing album. One of the highs for plunderphonics. The grooves were strange but funky and the samples always keep you listening for more. Lots of fun to listen to.

Wonderful.

Would I listen to this album again? Definitely. Were there any songs I skipped? No. Comments? I enjoy an album created to listen from front to back. Favourite Songs? Close to you / Frontier Psychiatrist

Amazing album

The avalanches are masters of the art of sampling. Okay if you haven't seen the music video for Frontier Psychiatrist you need to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLrnkK2YEcE also this video is a great audio reverse engineering of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Epr8xDE3Kgk&t=4s The first time I listened to the avalanches I was relatively unimpresed but frontier psychiatrist in particular dug its way into my brain and struck me in a way few songs have. The more I learned about the avalanches and their methodology the more impressed I became. Also, it was an Avalanches interview talking about their favorite examples of sampling that finally pushed me to check out Wu Tang Clan cuz they pointed out that they sampled the underdog theme for one of their major songs.

One of the best and most innovative albums to start the 2000s

I was transformed to a wonderful world filled with a collage of the familiar and the strange. And I want to go again. And again. And again. Maybe I need therapy. 5 horses out of 5 🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴

chilled out and wicked samples

Great mix of sounds, long but blends in together well. Need to listen more.

One of my all time favorite albums!!! Finally we get some dance music. Love that it keeps the energy flowing from start to finish. This album features no original music, as it is produced from thousands of samples from thousands of records. A one of a kind album that I’ll always love.

super engaging, lots of really cool ideas

I LOVE THIS ALBUMMMM!!!!

Our favourite album of 2001

Oh I already know this is 5/5 for me. <3

Great album, reminded me of Deavid Soul in places

Frontier Psychiatrist was my jam in high school when this album came out and it's still a bop

The negative reviews on this are hilarious. Half "lack structure" half "too repetitive" both wrong, it's "intricately structured and masterfully repetitive". Also, this level of sampling IS original music. An Em chord is no one's music, just as the hundreds of sounds and phrases used on the record are no ones music, sans the Avalanches of course. This album is a Masterpiece and all who listen shall know. This is the album that the Monalisa and the Moonlanding recorded on the great barrier reef during the Tanguska event

I've listened to this album numerous times, but it's one I'm definitely guilty of putting on "in the background" and not really listening properly. So it was nice to give this a couple of closer listens. It's an incredibly unique album, and definitely one I would recommend to people looking to get into electronic music. There's so much to delve into here, and many of the layers will only peel back with repeat listens. It occupies that interesting niche of music (along with Boards of Canada and Cocteau Twins) which makes me feel nostalgia for things that I may or may not have experienced in the past. I do think it is a little long, and there are a couple of tracks in the middle that I wouldn't miss if they were left off. However, it's still a solid 9/10.

Love the "Holiday Sample" in "stay another season". So far loving this album. The beats are great. Not even through with my first listen but adding the album to my background playlist. This is some actual lofi and I'm into it.

This is a top 10, maybe even top 5, album for me. The level of compositional skill displayed is really unmatched. There’s no bad song on here for me and I could listen to this album daily and not get tired of it.

This one is great, the way they stitched together everything is magical! Albums like this always make me wonder what music would be like if there were no sampling laws!

Absolute banger as always, what a goddam pleasure to hear the possible zenith of crate digging. And frontier Psychiatrist is undeniable.

He's crazy in the coconut.

It's not often that an album comes along that defies genre, transcends time, and leaves an indelible mark on the musical landscape. "Since I Left You" by The Avalanches is one of those rare gems that accomplishes all of these feats and more. Released in the year 2000, this Australian electronic masterpiece remains as fresh, innovative, and endlessly enjoyable as it did over two decades ago. From the very first notes of the title track, you're transported into a world of sonic wonder that's built on a foundation of samples. The Avalanches, comprised of Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi, masterfully weave together a tapestry of sounds borrowed from a vast array of sources, from obscure vinyl records to vintage film clips. The result is a lush and kaleidoscopic collage of music that defies easy classification. One of the album's most remarkable features is its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing while simultaneously feeling incredibly contemporary. It's as if The Avalanches have tapped into a universal reservoir of human emotion and distilled it into music. Tracks like "Two Hearts in 3/4 Time" and "A Different Feeling" are imbued with a bittersweet melancholy that tugs at the heartstrings, while the infectious groove of "Frontier Psychiatrist" and "Radio" will have you dancing with abandon. The Avalanches' creative genius lies not only in their ability to select and manipulate samples but also in their impeccable sequencing and production. The album flows seamlessly from one track to the next, creating an immersive experience that encourages you to listen from start to finish. It's a sonic journey that takes you on a whirlwind tour through time and space, from the bustling streets of New York City to the tranquil shores of a tropical paradise. Despite its heavy reliance on sampling, "Since I Left You" feels remarkably organic. The layers of sound are meticulously crafted, and each element fits together like a perfectly assembled puzzle. This attention to detail is what elevates the album from a mere collection of songs to a transcendent work of art. Over the years, "Since I Left You" has earned its place in the pantheon of electronic music classics. It has influenced countless artists and continues to inspire new generations of musicians and producers. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to surprise and delight with each listen, revealing new layers and nuances that may have been missed before. In conclusion, "Since I Left You" by The Avalanches is a timeless masterpiece that defies categorization and stands as a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in music. Whether you're a dedicated electronic music enthusiast or simply a lover of great music, this album is a must-listen. It's a sonic journey that will leave you enchanted, moved, and ultimately grateful for the enduring magic of music.

Instrumental hip hop right up my alley. Shocked that the only song I'd heard from it was Frontier Psychiatry ("that boy needs therapy")

Some fun DJ music. Not as heavy as let's say Daft Punk, but very heavy into incorporating samples into every song. It's fun seeing all the puzzle pieces come together to create music.

Crazy impressive debut from these guys! I spin all their albums frequently, but this one takes the cake. A lot of different influences on show here, and the sampling is insane. I often say an album is at perfect length or overstays its welcome. But in this case, it could've been longer, it's just that good and fun! 9,5 out of 10

This is a great example of an experience album, where there's not necessarily a singular song but running themes throughout the album. The exception to this is the well known 'Frontier Psychiatrist's which I think is a great song but definitely is different to the rest of the album, sort of giving a mid album break. 100% has made it in to my top albums of all time, kind of surprised I hadn't listened to it sooner.

Fuck yes Gowan

Having never listened to The Avalanches before, this just became a solid staple of mine. The attention to detail on this is off the charts, while still appearing coherent throughout. An absolute delight!

An undiscovered gem, Since I left You is a great opener and discovering after all this time that Frontier Psychiatrist was created by them blew me away.

Would give 10 if I could

Love it, added to Spotify

C’était cool, mais je ne me souviens d’aucune chansons, fake c’est plutôt meh EDIT DU FUTUR: OK NON C'EST DU DÉLIRE, EN PLUS 69 TROP DRÔLE QUOI

Really enjoyed this album. Can appreciate the musical mastery behind combining so many loops here, and how it inspired others is just phenomenal. Love this style of music.

Great band, amazing album. I was a fan of few of the songs from "Since I Left You", they have a really catchy beat and melody, usually interesting vocal, but the best thing about it is the music video to the singles. It's just so captivating, weird, sad and funny, perfectly encapsulating what the song is about. I'm just a big fan of this album, I like how the track flows fluidly from one to another, with certain themes being explored again under a different light. Looking for a vinyl of this band straight away!

saul music, but from the year 2000

I really loved Since I left you! The whole album is very smooth, even though it doesn't have everything. It's Chill, lo-fi, but also very high-energy and extremely creative. Some albums feel long even though they're only 30-40 minutes, this album felt very smooth, even though it was a full hour it went by very quickly. Absolute rollercoaster of an experience, 5/5. Favorite songs: Since I Left You, Stay Another Season, Two Hearts in 3/4 Time, Electricity, Frontier Psychiatrist, Little Journey.

TOPPALBUM

10/10 been a fan of The Avalanches for a little while they are geniuses

Phenominal record. One of my all-time favorites.

Warning! This is not for everyone, but if you like doing cocaine ... like Avalanches of cocaine, they you're' in luck!

Great best album so far

Every song just flows amazingly, also fantastic samples

The entire album is very groovy! I dig the entire album.

Highlights: Since I Left You, Flight Tonight, Electricity, Frontier Psychiatrist, Etoh

I have a mild obsession and listen to this all the time. One of my favorite albums of all time

SO MUCH FUN!! the vibes are immaculate

Fun low key vibes

One of favorite complete listens. Such a great album.

Amazing album

This album is so amazing. I could probably listen to it forever.

Pelkästään sampleja...

This is one of the most surprising discoveries since I started with this project. It reminds me so much of Daft Punk but with its unique identity and style. The songs change from rock, hip-hop to straight electronica. They use interesting samples and manages to always keep things exciting and fresh. This is a 5/5 and something I gladly would like to go back to and listen to more.

Wooooww!! Very very very good instrumental, electronic, sample album.... Pretty much all I love and so week executed. 5/5

The way these samples are layered is just astonishing. The Avalanches really paved the way for so many electronic musicians after them.

Meticulously brilliant, and with enough catchy tunes to keep you listening to complexity here. One to revisit on a sunny pool party kind of day. 17/04/23

I was blown away by the complexity of the arrangements, the variety of samples and the sheer joy and elation that emanates from this album from beginning to end.

I love this album. Such a fun and unique listen.

This album expertly creates changing landscapes of sound that take the listener from disco clubs, to speakeasies, and notably inside a film. The transitions are done smoothly and the scope of the album has a larger than life cinematic feels. The sampling is top notch as well. This is certainly one of the most engaging electronic albums I’ve ever listened to.

I knew Frontier Psychiatrist. Turns out I also knew Since I Left You, without actually knowing that it was The Avalanches. Frontier Psychiatrist can be a little overpowering. It's a great track, but can get a bit tiring because there is loads going on, and it's difficult to keep abreast of all the things there are assaulting your earballs. However - in the context of this album, it is amazing. This album is amazing. Speaking of keeping abreast - you need to, because this album is absolutely, 100% The Tits. I was not expecting it to be. I was in the market for this sort of thing back in 2000/2001 - and it didn't hit me. I wish it did, because I think it may have changed the course of my life. I'll say again. This album is The Tits. If there's anything I'd want to give more than 5 stars because it has gone over and above what I was expecting, what I was hoping for, and what I need to hear, it's this. There's some great albums in this list - and very, punishingly few of them come close to how good this is. Man, this is GOOD.

Banger

a new morsel with every listen

Another great display of sampledelica after listening to 'Fear of a Black Planet'. Feels like you're in a movie based in the ocean, and the never-ending range of sounds and samples are the waves. Favourite Tracks: - Frontier Psychiatrist - Tonight - Since I Left You - Live at Dominoes - Two Hearts in 3/4 Time - Electricity - A Different Feeling - Close to You - Etoh - Flight Tonight - Radio - Extra Kings Overall Grade: 5/5 (A / A-)

Frontier Psychiatrist was in my heavy rotation when this came out.

Stone cold classic.

Stone cold classic, one of the perfect summer albums.

First album here that's going in my regular rotation

Masterpiece. An hour-long journey constructed from small snippets of a few thousand dollar bin records, but crucially, it's a mesmerizing piece of music beyond just the process. Lots of good memories jamming out to this Watch the "Frontier Psychiatrist" music video if you haven't seen it Only topped (arguably) by their subsequent two albums

Uhh fine, this is a 5. But I give it under protest to Sean’s election tampering. Even now I can’t be sure if my 5 is somehow influenced by his interference.

i was on wikipedia for this and learned the word sampledelia and its the perfect word for this. kinda feels like you're just flipping through a radio that gets broadcasts from the last hundred years, sometimes overlayed into a dope beat.

unexpected journey

Some albums are greater than the sum of their parts, but what happens when all of the parts individually are masterpieces? This album was one of the first albums that I had hoped to be on this list. It is righteous and joyous and emotionally deep. I cannot help but to dance when I hear it. Do I like it? Nope. I adore it.

Favorite tracks: since I left you, stay another season, frontier psychiatrist

Классная электронная музыка. Проект необычный. Напомнил Messer fur Frau Muller и другие проекты Олегов.

One of these electronic albums that works on many different levels. Should definitely be on the list.

This was really good. Nice grooves, creative sampling. Reminded me of both Daft Punk and DJ Shadow, but it still had its own sound.

Have had this album on repeat for a bit Cool concept; they nail the mood through the whole album Since I Left You is just a great song Never knew when one song ended and another began Feels like a complete work

Tää on kuin sarja postikortin kokoisia maalauksia täynnä sairaan hienoja yksityiskohtia.

Äää rakastann. Parhautta alusta loppuun. Ihanaa, että tää on olemassa, kiitos aussijäbät.

Love this album. Been listening to this since college and I come to appreciate it more over the years. It follows in the steps of producers like DJ Shadow and finds a way to make energetic, catchy, and melodic songs almost entirely through samples. This album is over 20 years old but still feels cool and exciting and layered to me. I would name some standout tracks but I love this thing from top to bottom. That boy needs therapy.

bro stop using my account pls oh fuck

Aaaaah that sample that Mac Miller also used! I didn’t realise their other songs (apart from Frontier Psychiatrist) were also good!

Love this album. Such a classic that was steeped in so much mystery for the longest time as well. Would love to see a comprehensive list of all the samples they used. 5/5

A symphony of samples, and an absolute delightful sort of background music that can creep to the foreground seamlessly.

I love this album, it was my first introduction to plunderphonics, and it remains one of the only albums of that genre I can stand really. I really enjoy how it flows from one song to the next without feeling whiplashed or bored. There is a part towards the end that gets a bit slow, but I don't really mind. All-around a beautiful and magical album.

Incredible album and Australian to boot. Love these guys and remember this album blowing my mind when it first came out. Frontier Psychiatrist is just so much fun and the way the album works as a whole is just delightfult.

New generation Beastie Boys, great album!

classic

A Magnus opus of the sampling genre. This album screams warm summer evenings. Intricate and intelligent and yet contains all the necessary elements of a feel good pop album! How can you not love this?

Very fun electronica. Lots of cool samples and fun vibes.

Since I Left You and Frontier Pyschaitrist are brilliant tracks, the rest of the album pretty damn good

Incredible. The Avalanches are masters of the mashup.

It's just brilliant. Plunderphonics is an underrated artform, and Avalanches are masters of this. The way the album flows through a strange neverending wistful holiday (which I always thought might be the afterlife, and I also believe one of the 800 or so samples is of Holiday by Madonna) is genius.

Muito boooom. Ótimos clipes também.

This album is so bouncy and fun, constantly weaving these grooves from all over. Radio is a jam. A Different Feeling reminds me of old Daft Punk. Frontier Psychologist is a favorite. Etoh into Summer Crane is smooth like butter.

Really cleverly made with all those samples. Poppy and easy to listen to but the tracks have a lot of layers on re-listens. The album is sort of a complete experience, very well crafted. Been one of my favorites for a while!

Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Since I left you, Radio, Diners only, Electricity, Etoh, Extra kings

I nearly didn't listen tot this because I was doing sound yesterday for work. I'm very glad I didn't as I've never heard anything like this, it manages to be catchy without feeling tiresome and experimental without feeling convoluted.

אלבום מעולה, מוזיקה מיוחדת ואלטרנטיבית, אהבתי מאוד מאוד

One of, if not the greatest, plunderphonix albums. Blends so well with so many different topics. It is a work a beauty

A suite of nicely mashed together samples and beats. Frontier Psychiatrist probably my favourite

I recall driving to JB-Hifi in Woden to pick this up on release weekend and listening to it in the car on the way home. When 'Stay Another Season' hit I couldn't believe my ears... did Madonna okay that sample? Apparently she did. Wow!

I am not at all familiar with The Avalanches. So, this was a new listening adventure, and I sid enjoy it very much! There were moments where I felt like I was in a club and moments where I was kicking back to chill…and there were also a couple of moments where I was thinking “What…is…happening, and how can we make it stop?!?” But those moments were not disruptive enough to lessen my ‘love’ rating. Also, Frontier Psychiatrist is an absolute masterpiece!!

This was a great dance party. Tempos and styles changed but we kept grooving from start to finish. Loved it.

DISCO lives forever! Fantastic album. Kept finding myself dancing for pretty much for the full hour. The cats thought I had lost it. The sampling on this album is wonderful. These songs are complex and cohesive sample assemblies that had me constantly lit up with moments of recognition. “Is that The Hustle?” “Fleetwood Mac!” “It’s Debbie Reynolds!” “There’s Holiday!” “The NBC Mystery Movie Theme?!” “You’re crazier than a coconut!” “Isn’t that a Disney short?” I’m not singling out any songs. This album is too fun as a whole journey. Fun fun fun yes indeed!

Have listened before - fantastic album that opened many musical doors

An Absolute Jam. All of tracks on here are linked perfectly well to create a fantastic experience front to back. Perfect record, nuff said. Favorites: Since I Left You, Radio, Electricity, Frontier Psychiatrist

Incredible timing. I was listening to this one on my own two days before this popped up here. I hadn’t listened to it in years prior. If you like heavily sample driven music that’s very cycling and self referential, then I think this is going to work. So many things to notice on replays. I really dig this music.

One of the great mixtapes of all time and the soundtrack to the type of millennial house party I always dreamt of going to but was never cool enough to be invited to. For inventiveness, the sheer amount and variety of samples used (which shimmer and melt into, then emerge out of each other seamlessly), the nostalgia factor, the tinges of longing mixed with sadness, and for just the sheer fun factor you can't beat this. It’s lightning in a bottle.

Realised I'd never listened to this all the way through. Really enjoyed it, a pleasant surprise. Top notch cut and paste sampling

ну классный альбом чо, все на семплах как в первом альбоме дж шедова, тока тут фанкидиско ивот это вот все

Might have one of the best track flows there is, each song goes right into the next seamlessly. Love this album, so groovy.

Such a fun and joyous cacophony of found sounds. 9/10

Truely an interesting album I’ve never experienced before

Very solid and enjoyable

Not usually my style, but really good listen. Added to favourites

without a doubt a seminal album in the world of electronic music. doesn't get much better than this as far as experimental/glitchy electronic goes

10/10 todo conecta re melo

The best yet

Such a great album. So many sonic textures.

Nice n flowy

A FAT FIVE FROM THE MOMENT IT HIT MY EARS. LIQUID GOLD RUNNING DOWN YOUR EAR HOLES, THEN INTO YOUR VEINS.

Great groove

This reminds me strongly of my time in Australia, when I discovered The Avalanches. Incidentally also an Australian band (not the reason though). Absolute banger 5 stars EASY. Fun, alternative and love the use of layered sampling

This album is an hour long song basically. It weaves through a ton of samples to make glistening and sparkly beats with that old time flavor. A lot of the samples still have the record popping sounds on them which I appreciate (either artificial or otherwise). I do think there is a couple filler tracks that didn’t really stand out as much to me and this could’ve probably been a 50 minute record. That being said, this is probably in the top 5 quintessential plunderphonics records and if you are into electronic music and sampling, you need to hear this record at least once. Favorite song: Frontier Psychiatrist Least favorite song: A Different Feeling

I enjoyed this album a lot. Good mixes and upbeat songs.

elettrofigata, influenze

love this album. The samples and electronics work on every track. My favourite is frontier psychiatrist, banger

love this album - need to listen to whole thing again

Surprisingly fun. Every song is good but some of the track transitions are questionable at best.

This has been on my peripheral for a while now, and I do have to say that I'm impressed. Since I Left You is plunderphonics executed to the peak of it's capabilities. This thing is made out of art turned cultural detritus through lost vinyl records and films. And The Avalanches make it a new and vital form of art. Basically, they are building a bridge to the future out of the past. And this really *does* sound futuristic. This would have sounded just as right coming out last decade, or even this decade. Perhaps timeless is more correct than futuristic then. But The Avalanches touch on Hip-Hop, electronica, House, ambient and more. There are cool songs, danceable songs, and beautiful songs. And the magic is that the samples that this is made out of can still kind of be recognized and enjoyed as the things that they used to be too. Frontier Psychiatrist is one of the easiest highlights here. It features some of the most creative sampling I've ever heard. But Since I Left You honestly flows like a single piece of art, most similarly to a DJ set. Sampled elements are carried between songs, as are rhythmic and melodic ideas. It ends up remarkably cohesive. I think this is an easy 9, however that isn't really an option here, so I'm gonna hold off on the 10 for now, but know that Since I Left You is *extremely* good.

What a fun album. Light, dancy and such many fantastic samples. Frontier Psychiatrist is such a banger. Good to hear it again. Other faves were the title track and A Different Feeling.

“Plunderphonics”? Or is it really … Australian Shibuya-kei?

I did not hate, sometimes it was pretty good, so 4 I give it

Psychosomatic, that boy needs therapy! Never knew these guys did that song - that song alone gets this album a 4/5. This album overall is quite decent and fun though.

The Avalanches - Since I left you Bought this at the time. Forgot how good this is - the final quarter is excellent. Good , not great , so ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pre listen: Frontier psychiatrist is a staple on the playlist - but I've never listened further. I remember first seeing the music video on morning TV - possibly the big breakfast? Post listen: What a journey. Seamless transitions, happy vibes. Like the best holiday you ever had encapsulated in an album. This is evolution in sound form. Building, iterating and growing. Made purely of samples this is a snapshot of humanity. There are a few songs I'll definitely return to - [Electricity][Radio][Stay Another Season] Downsides wise - personally the art of sampling means that at times the hook or beat I like may just drop out, some vocal samples repeat a little too much and it fades out towards the end a bit too much. Next long car journey this is definitely going on!

Riktigt snyggt

Did not know anything about this and really loved it! Really close to a 5

A pot smoking pot smokers album

Since I Left You is a DJ mix of many samples from pop music with a preference for hip hop or hip hop-derived tracks. I enjoyed the whole album.

Don’t think I have ever actually listened to this… But I know much of it. Often weird listening to a dj mix straight, there are quite a few on this list, and it’s really demonstrated to me that this is not the intention for these albums in the same way as their rock and roll cousins. On the other hand, I do enjoy them. And this release from the Avalanches DOES pile the hits and craftily sampled hit on you. 4 Boolean: yes, let’s get the party going

To me this is an example of electronic music being repetitive yet unique while not sounding annoying. Plus each song seemed to effortlessly transition from one to the next creating a more cohesive sound. Likes: Since I Left You; Stay Another Season; Electricity; Summer Crane; Live at Dominoes

First listen thought it was just OK, but when I went back through a second time some of the tracks really stood out and overall I enjoyed it quite a bit more.

Nobody dances like coal miners.

Sampling masterclass that produced some great songs. "Frontier psychiatrist" and the title song are pure genius. It does go on a little long being a little too repetitive and not every track is a hit, though.

Supreendeu

Acho que podia ate ser mais. Mas muito longo e não achei o álbum coeso.

Very few things sound like this and I appreciate that. There are some parts where my mind wanders a bit but overall this is such a fun album to have on while doing stuff and listening with other people

Honestly pretty good. Lots of instrumentals but beautifully done. Each song had its own individual sound while still being catchy. Not something i would listen to regularly but i mess w it. 8/10

4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/the-avalanches/since-i-left-you/ Not everything hits, but when it does, it really does. Opening track, Frontier Psychiatrist, absolute bangers. Crazy how this is just/mostly(?) samples.

Great. Fun if kind of just elevated background music.

Such an entrancing and mysterious album, it really rules. So much to get lost in and I can’t even fathom how they landed on this. Once I asked the DJ (my middle school English teacher) at my middle school dance to play Frontier Psychiatrist. Something’s wrong with me

For some reason this album has never connected in the way it should have. i know its good and the best im just gonna keep listening to it until its my fav

Solid album. I liked how everything flowed together. Electronic albums are always better when the songs don’t overstay their welcome.

This was a pleasant surprise. I’ve never heard of the avalanches before and I have never heard anything from this album before but I really liked it!

Awesome

Interesting

Soaking wet layers of samples snipped and snapped together to create soundscapes that take you away

There is a lot going on and at times I found it a bit exhausting, but I am sure I will go back to it so that is a win. And Frontier Psychiatrist is just good fun

I didn't think I'd enjoy this at first, but after a few songs, it kinda grew on me and I noticed I was dancing along in my car on the way to work. Not bad at all. It was fun to really put on my listening ears and take notice of all the different samples used in each song, which is mindblowing when I think of the talent involved in orchestrating this kind of music. I probably won't go out of my way to listen to it again, but I won't skip it if it happens to pop up on a shuffle.

infinitely groovy and a great time

...Flight 22 is off to Honolulu…Flight 22 is off to Honolulu... Originally heard about this album on a Questlove podcast with The Avalanches. It didn't click right away, but "Live at Dominoes" stuck out (and got stuck in my head). Went back and a few more spins made me realize this was a great one. Worth a second shot - or just go back and listen to "Live at Dominoes"

Really smooth samples and pretty sick flow from track 1

Since I Left You is an endlessly creative and fun album (from my home country), that admittedly can get a bit too repetitive for my taste but most of this album is just so fun to listen to 8/10 Favourite: Frontier Psychiatrist Least Favourite: Flight Tonight

The sheer fact that this album contains so many samples which were seamlessly mixed together is amazing. I really enjoyed this, never having heard of the Avalanches before.

I think this would be greatly improved if some of the vocal sampling was removed, there is just a bit too much. But an impressive technical feat all the same 3.5*

"When you have insomnia, you're never really asleep, and you're never really awake. With insomnia, nothing's real. Everything is far away. Everything is a copy of a copy of a copy.” - narrator, Fight Club. Its Late Night Channel Surfing: The Album. Seriously, this album was fueled by the same insomnia driven compulsion to cycle through 57 channels when nothing is on. It is full of music that sounds like the last 30 minutes of syndicated programming before station sign-off. Needless to say I vibed with this immediately. Most of the electronic and techno albums I've encountered have all been 3s. Its hard for me to rate this type of music. This one, however, hooked me. Its a sleep deprived sonic stream of conscience composition. I was reminded of those Adult Swim bumpers or old Toonami music videos, the ones that sampled the shows and made short themed music videos. Look up Broken Promises (Dreams) for the best example. Since I Left You is like that in you have a "track" that is meticulously arranged samples and loops riding an ambient backbeat. "Frontier Psychiatrist" is going to be a playlist mainstay while "Avalanche Rock", "Flight Tonight" and "Electricty" also caught my attention. And that bring us to the end of the review. Time to sign-off. See you tomorrow.

Really like this. I listened to their 2020 album which was also good. This might deserve to get a 3 but there are no rules

Creative use of samples, not just repeats over and over. Some of the songs are really catchy.

Great from beginning to end. Frontier Psychologist is ridiculously good.

I’d not heard of these before tbh so didn’t know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. Considering the grooves I was equally surprised to discover they were two white Aussie guys

Since I Left You by The Avalanches was completely new to me before today, and it turned out to be a very welcome surprise. It also made me realise that I clearly like electronic music more than I thought. This album is great. It’s full of variety, really tuneful, and built on some brilliant use of samples. It’s an easy listen at home, but you can also imagine it working perfectly on a night out. The title track Since I Left You is a standout, just a superb piece of music, but there are plenty of other highlights too, like Close to You and Frontier Psychiatrist. The way the samples are layered and stitched together across the album is really impressive and gives it a unique, almost nostalgic feel. What’s most impressive is how fresh it still sounds over 20 years later. It doesn’t feel dated at all, which is a real credit to how well it’s put together. I’ll definitely be coming back to this and adding it to the record collection. Favourite tracks: Since I Left You is brilliant. I also loved Frontier Psychiatrist and the use of samples throughout the album Least favourite tracks: Every track is worth a listen, but it is a little long and can feel slightly repetitive in places Album artwork: Cool cover that fits the vibe of the album

Super interesting and fun - would love to listen to when cooking etc

3.8 2x great electronic album. catch up 4/8

Classic album for me, 3 songs that I really like and the rest I enjoy but I wouldn’t necessarily call them good songs that I would play for other people. 3.5 stars rounded to a 4

I previously had a passing knowledge of The Avalanches from Frontier Psychiatrist and a couple of other songs I had run into in the wild. Always thought they made some cool stuff but never took the time to check out an album. Since I Left You was an exciting entry to see hit the list. I went in a little giddy with somewhat high expectations and man did The Avalanches hit it out of the park. Since I Left You is such a creative and fun endeavor. The practice of generating an album from extensive sampling and looping is really intriguing but I haven't seen it come together so effectively until this album. Any acclaim for this album is deserved as it really is a unique and exciting experience. A couple hits stand out but entire album is engaging and doesn't have any low points or skips. Fun and creative from start to finish. I'd love for more stuff like this to get an entry on the list. 3.73 stars

a fun listen!!!

Really enjoyed

This was completely new to me and I enjoyed it while driving south on I5 to Portland. It was eclectic, interesting, and entertaining. Really fun and frequently put a smile on my face. Makes me want to have a party so u can play it for a crowd.

I enjoyed this album quite a bit. It sounds like music for a party I would like to go to.

Ooh man this is something. This is somethinggggg. Fuck yeah. Wait this is goated I like a good catchy beat. I like it when my music is a little weird. Me when I gotta catch a flight tonight. Normally I would dislike the homogeneity of the sound but combined with the transitions I feel like its made like that to feel like one song running the course of the album, not individuals. I like the effect. It's still dynamic and interesting to listen to, especially as a study playlist since it's so repetitive. It switches the vibe up very well. I really like the titles of the songs as well. I'm really liking the latter half of the album especially. Wow I feel like I really am on Pablo's cruise. This boy needs therapy bro. Where have I heard these audio clips before? French jumpscare. I want go to dominoes. Yeah first half 4 starts second half 5. Favourite: Electricity Least favourite: Close To You

Undeniably creative and has one of my favorite singles of all time "Frontier Psychiatrist" and a gold standard in the genre of "cratedigger loop music". A little too "unfocused" for a 5

royskopp x daft punk vibes - count me in

Always liked this album a lot. Biggest surprise was that it's from '99. Really thought it was newer than that

I will always have a respect for excessive sampling, and so I am impressed by this. Landslide performance.

I liked this. Not my usual genre however enjoyed throughout.

Since I Left You I was aware of this at the time, but somehow it passed me by, even though it feels like something I would have liked circa 2000-2001. Although structurally it is cut from similar cloth to Endtroducing, it doesn’t quite carry the same sense of gravity or depth. That’s not necessarily a criticism, as Entroducing feels so much like its own unique, singular world that it’s not really a fair comparison. But where Endtroducing immerses you in its intricacies and solemnity, Since I Left You has a flittier sense, skipping around more lightly, feeling more horizontal than vertical, leaning more into Daft Punk style house rather than low-key hip hop. It is an excellent album in its own right though, and it is a great achievement to make something so good from 3,500 samples, what a labour of love. And although there are some standout tracks - the title track, Flight Tonight, Electricity, Frontier Psychiatrist, Etoh, Little Journey, Live at Dominoes and Extra Kings are all great - I think it’s better as a whole piece of music, moving between tracks and upbeat and downbeat excellently. I’m glad the list made me finally listen to it. I'm not sure it’s at the top tier, but it's a great album, and I’ll definitely be revisiting, so a high 4. 🌊🌊🌊🌊 Playlist submission: Frontier Psychiatrist

This gave me big DJ Shadow vibes ('Frontier Psychiatrist' in particular), but DJ Shadow if he went on holiday. Driven by intricate sampledelica to create something anew, that something is upbeat and sunny - dispensing of Shadow's darker side. It also foregoes Shadow's huge beats for a feel more akin to pop (Mamas and the Papas and Madonna are sampled). This could potentially lead to something lightweight - for instance 'Close to You' goes through passages where it feels beneficial to be listening via your walkmen whilst roller-skating. And yet the tracks are compiled with such craft by the band, that it's not ersatz in the slightest, and very hard not to enjoy. 'A Different Feeling' sounds like the uplifting beats of the club, Daft Punk style. This track alone contains sixteen samples, among them Falco, Debbie Reynolds, Sesame Street. This is the blithe side of life. 'Live at Dominoes' has the sound of being outside, then inside, the club. And with the addition of robot voices, it surely owes a debt to 'Homework'. 'Since I Left You' segues without announcing itself into 'Stay Another Season' and it's really just one, long uplifting track. The album feels like it's a continuous DJ set (not for the club but perhaps a pool party or other hot gathering where people are relaxed and having 'fun'). A great listen all round.

The Avalanches have exhibited some skilled Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) editing on SINCE I LEFT YOU, and they have become darlings of the plunderphonics scene, but I really wish they hadn't been so reliant on samples. It is clear they were inspired by the disco, hip hop, synth pop, and industrial scenes of the 1980s and 1990s (The Chemical Brothers and The Crystal Method come to mind). It is also clear how much this album influenced the vibrant electronic band scene in Australia and New Zealand that would emerge in the late '00s. The concept album idea of chasing somebody from port to port by exploring through soundscapes grew on me the longer the album played. Favorites: "A Different Feeling" and "Frontier Psychiatrist"

Sampling is a delicate matter; make a single mistake and you'll have to hand over all the profits from your song to other guys. Richard Ashcroft, Vanilla Ice, and the late Juice Wrld will tell you that. If there's just one sample on an album, negotiating its use isn't a problem. But what if there are, say, nine hundred? Or even more than three thousand? That's exactly the number used on this record, according to its creators. Moreover, there are no new sounds here; it's all samples. A horse's neighing, some Indian melody, something Rasta-esque, dialogue from a movie... The description sounds like cacophony, but in reality, The Avalanches managed to make a truly amazing dance album. Cutting it all up in the right order and getting permission to use the sounds is an incredible amount of work. If you're too lazy to prepare a playlist for a party, feel free to just put this album on — everyone will appreciate it.

Fun album

There are some highs and lows on this album, but it truly sounds like nothing I’ve ever heard before. Such an imaginative album, using all sorts of different recordings to create a new, cohesive whole. I honestly think the production of this album is more interesting than some parts of the album, but there are some really standout moments. It’s a great time.

I never used to care for this outside of the incredible title song, but this listen was doing it for me more, it turns out. It still can't keep up with the level that one sets, but the lushness of it all is definitely winning me over now. Plus, I loved how I actually recognized a Francoise Hardy sample in it this time around!

Wildes Ding

holy motherfucking shit this is good. this is what i imagine a good trip sound and feels like.

Really good

This is really cool. I like how it all flows together. I think it will grow on me more with further listens too.

Oh wow what a gem, some loops aren’t perfect but it comes close.

On the 2nd listen...I started to enjoy this. Will I ever get to 5 stars? Probably not, but this is interesting enough and if nothing else, great music to get high to. 4 stoner to be stars

FRONTIER PSYCHIATRIST

I’ve quite liked these guys since first hearing them with “Frontier Psychiatrist” - not for everyone, I expect, but just right for me

Very cool and groovy and unexpected. I love the genre name "plunderphonics". It's like if daft punk made lo fi music, kind of? Really enjoyed it.

Entiendo el género y funciona muy bien como álbum

Another CLASSIC! I really enjoyed this album the use of sampling, cool mixes kept me engaged as I listened to this during my commute today. If I had to choose a track, it would be ‘Radio’, ‘Electricity’, ‘Etoh’ and ‘Frontier Psychiatrist’ These were the tracks which stood out to me and really allowed me to imagine the world that was composed for each track. ‘ Frontier Psychiatrist’ was oddly nostalgic because it was used in flipnotes over a decade ago for multiple fandoms I used to be in such as the Fnaf, OFF and several other video-game franchises. Now the rating for this is a bit tricky, but I’ve landed on a nice 4/5 because of how fun I found this body of work.

this is the album i never knew i needed, this vas a great discovery. All the songs were amazing.

Classic, love it. Overstays a bit. Loved it in my youth, less now that I’ve listened to a lot of daft punk

Good musicality that goes well with the sampling throughout the album!

Very cool, had moments where it felt like an early 2000s video game soundtrack. Definitely able to see the influence it had.

I can respect what was done with this album, though it is not something I would ever really listen to again personally

Good plunderphonics. Not crazy crazy about it though. I'd rather be listening to DJ Shadow

This was huge when I was at university, ‘Frontier Psychiatrist’ seemed to be on student radio all the time. Fun album.

I'd listened to this while working and I found it kinda boring. But I am back in the bay this week and I listened to it when I was walking to the Y and it was a lot more enjoyable. Lotta samples.

Fascinating, fun.

Dreamy. What is going on? Is that dexter?

Overall a lot of fun but some songs were more interesting than others.

One of the most cohesive and listenable albums ever thats mostly sample based, to me. Really cool and hypnagogic.

You're a natural! You're crazy in the coconuts! I loved Frontier Psychiatrist as a kid. It's so weird and out there and I love it for that. I really enjoy this kind of lofi/electronic music, great for walking in the airport

really cool album. "frontier psychiatrist" is one of my favorite songs that i've heard this entire project.

I was gonna be a naysayer at first, but the more I listened the more I found to enjoy about this album. Hard to believe this is 25 years old.

# Playlist Track - Frontier Psychiatrist # Notes - Had a lot of fun with this one. A bit repetitive at times, but a very enjoyable album throughout. - Will definitely listen to other music from them

Pretty cool mix tape. Love it when someone can piece together so many different sounds/samples and make cool music out of it.

this rocked!!!!

A slew of rhythmic and gyrating euphoria

Only know the title track but this is groovy

I enjoyed this, chill electronic. A lot of sampling for sure, bit they made it work.

Really unique album. Frontier psychiatrist bangs so hard

What an awesome surprise! Crazy flow and really interesting songs. Will listen again for sure

A surprising gem for me, felt I recognized the name of the band, turns out I knew a few songs, the album is great, a perfect flow from beginning to end, each song perfectly leading into the next. Definitely one to come back to.

Really enjoyable mix. Sounds like a live mix you'd find on Soundcloud. Reminds me a lot of Gramatik as well. Would really vibe well in a coffee shop. Sampledelia and plunderphonics are new words I learned today. Big fan of this genre honestly. Nice relaxing, focus-inducing listen. I don't always line up with Brandon's taste in music, but I think this album is firmly in the overlapping portion of our Venn diagram. I hope he actually liked it or else I'm going to look like a clown.

Holy hell I would have never thought in a million years that Frontier Psychiatrist would come up on here. Me and the fellas at Towson used to listen to that song all of the time because of how weird it was but now it jams after a 13 year hiatus of listening to it. The rest of this album may have been where brainrot started because there was just so much random shit going on in my ears the whole time...but i was enjoying every second of it. This may get my stamp for Most Random Album to Appear on this List That I Previously Knew award.

A masterpiece of sampling. Probably my favorite plunderphonics album of all time. 9/10

It's weird. Not my preference but i liked it as background music. It's more like a 3.5 but I'm giving it a 4 to make sure i revisit it later

🐴👻🎺🥁🥥🤠

Never heard this before, though the song Frontier Psychiatrist showed up on my radar within the last year oddly enough. I like this album overall. There are a few snoozer tracks, but everything else has a great combination of instrumentation and composition. Definitely something I'll play again. 3.75/5

The dingos finally make the list. Frontier Psychiatrist was a pretty important cross-over track - infiltrating alternate guitar heavy radio stations and providing a glimpse of something more

Verrücktes Zeug. Irgendwie fordernd, aber dennoch melodisch. Mir gefällt es!

Really enjoyed this one. It's kind of a perfect party album. Turn it up and everyone can dance to the beats. Turn it down, and it's background music while people chill and talk. If there's a lull in conversation, there's plenty here to catch your ear. Given how many samples are mixed in to these tracks, it's amazing how coherent and organic it feels. Gonna check out other albums this group has made.

Epic album. Straight into the listening rotation

"Since I Left You" is up there with "Paul's Boutique" and "Endtroducing" for mosaic style sampling techniques across many genres. The Avalanches took it a step further by drilling deep down to thousands of microsamples and structured the album into a single hourlong piece of music. It's undoubtedly very impressive. These guys also put on some great shows. Having said that, the technique doesn't produce the same level of results. This is the kind of album that I put on once in a blue moon when I haven't listened to it for a while. I find it hard to really engage with the sounds given the rapid shifts and it functions more like background music for me. Still, I have a lot of respect for the skill and determination to make an album like this. It may not be an all time favorite, but it's still great.

Just what I needed, apparently

Very nice production

Ved ikke om jeg synes det er *meget* bedre end andre ikoniske samplealbums, men megafedt er det. Højdepunktet er Frontier Psychiatrist imo. Virkelig fede overgange mellem numrene

i liked it

interesting electronic, sampling

Inventive pop mixes. I like it fun

I've already listened to his album (20). Gets better with every listen.

The song Since I Left You is a fucking classic. The rest of the album is just fine though

Really cool electronic/sample music. Fun to work to.

Sampled electronic Since I left you Radio Close to you

The first half is a masterpiece. Brilliantly diverse electronic music that really pushes genre and vibes. The backhalf becomes pedestrian again and keeps it from a 5 star record for me.

I had no clue who these guys were but this was pretty awesome.

3.5, but I'm feeling generous today, giving a bonus .1 and rounding for Frontier Psychiatrist.

Ok this is an album. Like, I you could tell that when they wrote this, they were making an ALBUM. It flows so well, it feels like an hour long experience. Works perfectly as an album, had such a good experience listening to it. I don't know if I can justify a perfect 5, but it's atleast a 4.5, on other listens it could definitely go up to a 5.
