Pretty cool experience low 4/5

Songs flow together seamlessly, samples a lot of different audio, good music for focus. Listen with headphones.

I loved so many of the songs on here but I had no idea that they were all done by these guys.

plunderphonics at its best

Man what an album. Sometimes when you listen to someone at the top of their game, it really pulls you in. 4.5/5 Best Song: Maseru

Maybe the greatest hipster coffee shop album of all time. Its so listenable, but at times maybe a bit too listenable where it borders on boring. 4.1/5

This one really grows on you. At first, I was rolling my eyes, thinking, “not another one of these,” but by the end it had completely hooked me. The way the samples are layered and blended creates something both playful and immersive, turning skepticism into appreciation. A clever, surprising album that rewards you for sticking with it.

The Chemical Brothers meets Neon Indian. 8/10

Quality breaks, top scratching and pure samples, this is an easy recommendation for anyone that likes peanut butter wolf style instrumental hip hop.

energetic & fun

at least 5 times better than expected

This was really fun, exactly the kind of stuff I hoped to find from this list.

Æ tror ikke æ hørte på det her i 2000, men æ synes å huske at æ har hørt deler av det. Puslespillmusikk, ikke av typen som e bra å legge puslespill til, men den sorten som e pusla sammen av litt av alt. Helt ok.

I really enjoyed this! Reminded me of Justice's music.

Amazing beats, I prefer DJ Shadow's Endtroducing... but this is still a beautiful album. Title track is outstanding.

Pleasant and unique experience, collage, as some have called it. At around 3rd or 4th track I got a bit irritated, and before I blinked, all the songs just went by.

The things they’re able to do with samples is simply stunning.

Definitely a vibe.

I think the method used to create this album is very unique and shows that something can be more than just the sum of its parts. I like listening for the different samples that, in their new contexts, have created an entirely new perspective from which to listen. Though there are only a handful of tracks on the album I go out of my way to listen to (Frontier Psychiatrist being one), the album is enjoyable throughout.

The definitive greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts experience, whatever this trippy proto-vaporwave magic hour is, it was fun to listen to I liked the part where it went like "What can talk other than a person? A bird!" "CAW CAW CAW CA-CAW C-C-CA-CAW CAW"

"You're nuts! You're crazy in the coconut!" The "schtick" can become exhausting/tired at points, but it is the opinion of the of this humble listener that Since I Left You is criminally fun.

Never heard this album before, liked it WAY more that what I thought I would. Its really good!

Really interesting and fun, sounded amazing. 4 stars

Pretty cool and interesting. I knew Frontier Psychiatry before listening and didn't know they did it.

Loved it. So weird and beautiful

Really enjoyed it. 3.5/5

At first I wasn’t into this at all, but it grew on me surprisingly quickly. Now I find myself randomly thinking “This boy needs therapy!” It’s a bit inconsistent but overall I wound up really enjoying this.

that boy needs therapy!

Starting off with a band and album completely unfamiliar to me. Theatrical studio effects to simulate a “live” club experience. Singer has an interesting voice. Fun dance music with many layers of production. “Two Hearts in 3/4 Time” seems inspired by old European movie soundtracks circa 1972. “Flight Tonight” is another great dance track. There are record pops and scratches throughout that I could do without.

Avalanches albums are a cosmic collage, full of motifs that appear and reappear throughout the record. “Frontier Psychiatrist” is kind of a culmination of these, but the fragments of sound continue through the other songs in strange ways. They turn all these bits into something catchy and connected, which would seem impossible, but there it is. Listen on repeat!

Interesting electronic music, kept noddig my head. Love the genres being mixed together to come up with something new.

This is probably one of the most fun records to listen to that we’ve been given from this list so far. I had absolutely zero idea what to expect going into this one, and it was truly a wild ride. Almost schizophrenic electro-grooves. This album really is all over the place, but it kept my attention the entire time I listened to it. It’s also one of those record where you can tell they had a lot of fun making it, and that really shines through. The sheer number of samples involved is almost overwhelming, but I enjoyed it all nonetheless. 4*

Man, what a journey this thing was. I really couldn't tell if I liked it or hated it at the start, but as we started rolling through - I picked up the idea of how this album structures itself. I won't deny the talent, making something like this in 2000 would be immensely difficult. Props to them. I don't see myself coming back to this thing in a hurry, but I still had a pretty good time nevertheless. I don't understand the raving fanatics of this thing, but I do think it was a generally favourable experience. Live at Dominoes was my favourite song.

My first exposure to Avalanches was a friend gushing over frontier psychologist. He showed me the music video and my thoughts were, "this is alright, nothing special, sounds alot like the plunderphonics of Gotye". As I soon came to realise these guys were quite ahead of their time and Gotye, Onetrix Point Never and a lot of others owe them a lot. They're started a trend amongst Australian musicians for the better and plunderphonics, although not the first, does feel distinctly Australian. In the same vein as Ozploitation Cinema. My second exposure to this band was a situation with a lesbian who ruined my life. She had great taste in music though. And thankfully she made me give them a second chance and I'm glad I did. 8/10

I vibed with this album. Reminds me a bit of the film Boy and the World, because they both feel like they tell an abstract story through collage. Favorite Track: Frontier Psychiatrist

as a sample based producer, i can really appreciate a high quality sample based album. it's so interesting and i love all the elements to make it in a nice cohesive and funky package!

this is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good

This record is a vibe and I totally dig it.

Fantastic. Frontier Psychiatrist is a true work of art. The rest of the album is really good, but that one song in particular really stands out.

Quite nice. Ambient alternative electronic indie. I'd put this on again.

A most pleasant and adventurous listen. Electric is still not my usual genre, but this was an interesting trip of an album. It seamlessly flows from higher energy tracks, to funky and groovy, to dreamlike and downbeat. It feels like a journey through the universe.

A nostalgia bomb that works as its own thing. It is like a hip hop group and daft punk worked together to bring back youthful summers.

That was amazing

This was really fun and delightful to listen to, a good mix of many genres, per its plunderphonic origin. Rating: 4.0

Considering innovation, the album stands alone. Jamming 3,000+ samples into an album when sampling technology was still in its infancy is incredible. To take it further, the album is essentially unreplicable because of ever-tightening copyright laws that prevent the free use of intellectual property. Oh, and also, it sounds cool.

Heard this one too recently, really good example of plunderphonics but significantly weaker than DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing'. Also didn't seem to click with me as much as it appears to with many other people.

Great!

Adding to my list of favorites

So, I'm actually a few days late getting to reviewing this album — my group got it March 1st; it's March 3rd as I'm writing. There's other albums I wanna get to so I don't fall too far behind, so I wanna try and keep this short. Which is just as well, 'coz I don't have terribly much I wanna say about this album. In brief: it's pretty much exactly what I wanted ENDTRODUCING..... to be. As a reminder, although I adore much of the craft on display on ENDTRODUCING....., I find the actual end product a little boring. Too ambient, chill trip hop. For my money, I prefer my sampledelia records with a bit more kick. You take PAUL'S BOUTIQUE, FEAR OF A BLACK PLANET, or most any straight mashup album... Yeah, that's my bag. Thankfully, this album lines up with that. From the opening moments, I was happy to hear just how danceable it sounded. This thing has got some **grooves**. Now **this** is the kind of shit that holds my attention! Really makes me want to look into how the samples broke down instead of just gliding straight over them — y'know? Now, like, I can't 100% front. Even if this album is better at keeping my ears on it than ENDTRODUCING..... was... Boy howdy, did it really need to be an hour? Some of these songs could have been cut down, at least a little. Plus, I will say, as a personal preference, I've come to realize how much I do prefer sampledelic rap albums with vocals over instrumental sampledelia — besides DONUTS, anyway. The way the Beasties interacted with the samples on PAUL'S BOUTIQUE is just fascinating; endlessly more so than just letting these beats ride endlessly. And I get it, this album was made for dancing, not so much for sit down focusing, but either way. (I wanna mention, too, that I listened to the Zomba promo version of the album since I heard a lot of people insist it was the **only** way to hear it. Now, in the absence of hearing the officially released version I can't tell you if it is or not, but I did read that the Zomba promo contains all of the samples they used, uncut, so... Yeah, I guess that's the one for the "pure" experience.) And all the same, I won't say this isn't an impressive record, because it is. I mean, any album that builds itself out of samples like this is impressive, but... I'unno. This just has the air around it like it's extra special, eh? You feel me? But yeah. I don't feel like I can completely agree with the rest of my group that it's a straight 5, but at any rate, I can't see going any lower than a 4. Sampling is an art form, and this is one of the examples I'd point to, without a doubt.

A one of a kind listen

Timeless. Sample heaven. Soundscape.

good work music

"Dexter is criminally insane-sane-sane-sane" Enjoyed this on release, enjoyed it now.

Loved Frontier Psychiatrist when it came out. Good album and listened to it twice... I didn't know if I was in a dream at times.

Really chill, loved it.

Well ahead of their time.

Very solid album, the sampling was very interesting. Frontier Psychiatrist, Electricity, ETOH, and the title track were all highlights.

Highest rated album is never heard on this list. Awesome!

Avalanches are very groovy. I can see the influence of this even now in lots of tropical house type beats. And my dad probably loves this album. I think the only thing that actually “ages” this one is the drum/beat progression. Otherwise it still stands.

Now this is great pre show tunes to get down to. I'm pretty sure one of their other albums has been played as setbreak music and big down with it

Bubbly and well produced. Not always my thing, but, well done.

Tis good Not exceptional but that maybe cos it sounds slightly dated in places

Enjoyable good fun. Favourite tracks: Frontier Psychiatrist, Live at Dominoes.

I've had "Since I Left You" on playlists and always loved it but didn't realize it was part of a truly comprehensive album. I'm not smart enough about this genre or how The Avalanches fit in (wiki makes it seem like this was pretty groundbreaking). Samples obviously power this music but what I appreciate is that they are constantly finding melodies and motifs to turn into real songs and reference them across the album. I have to imagine Girl Talk is all about this album.

There were a few moments my first time through where I couldve been convinced I was listening to Can, Revolution Number 9 (senseless Beatles sampling), Daft Punk or Jungle (a bit more modern disco group). A wide range of sound here. Simple melodies and progressions. Fun samples. Most the times I was on my toes. Dancy vibes. Hated a few songs The album catches an amazing sequence of tracks at Summer Crane until Extra Kings. Worth my listen right there I wouldnt give a project like this 5 stars based on my taste. That said, I realllly enjoyed it and didnt really expect to after the first 10 mins. By the end of the album, I wanted it to spin again and thats the best sign that ill be coming back to it again. 4 stars

This is like proto lofi. I like it. 4/5 Highlights: Frontier Psychiatrist

a picture of this album's cover should appear in the dictionary under the definition of "kaleidoscopic". it's miraculous that this music even exists, both in terms of its production method and the (what I'm sure were) exorbitant clearance rates for all the samples involved! a lot of plunderphonic and other sample-based music tends to draw a lot of attention to the "found sound" element of the composition process, but the Avalanches find tons of fun and unique ways to make these songs feel seamless, both within themselves and from one to the next. it feels almost akin to a high-level DJ set! one seamless, dreamy, summery jam that traverses a landscape of disco, hip hop, club beats and psychedelia. it's hard to resist the urge to move and groove to a lot of these songs, but they're also great for deep listening in the same way as as other plunderphonic masterpieces like Endtroducing or Donuts. where those albums aim for something emotionally darker, the Avalanches aim instead for a bright sense of optimism and wonder. strong 8/10.

Obviously, "That Boy Needs Therapy" is the highlight, but this album was fun from start to finish.

Not an album you'd typically review from the comfort of an office chair—but what can you do? I'm a sucker for good sample usage, and this album nails it. It’s clever and uses its samples to full effect. For me, it's a solid 3.5 out of 5. It's repetitive at times, but honestly, that's why you dance to it.

Most tracks are for the rave/club. Tough to listen to outside of that environment. Cool choices for sampling and mixing. Listenable highlight: Two Hearts in 3/4 Time

I listened to this after Frontier Psychiatrist came out. I remember not liking the record, maybe I was expecting 12 Frontier Psychiatrists. This is much more of a vibes record. As weird as Frontier Psychiatrist it's really the only stand alone song. I enjoyed this listen a lot more. I might have to revisit this again.

Very cool album, although not one I’ll listen to often. Presumably influenced the genre that has led to some of my favourite artists at the moment like Fred again, who does a lot of sampling

Wick electronic album. Just a cool collection of samples done well! Adding this to my rotation

This was pretty groovy and a lot of fun! I recommended this to my kid to listen to as well, the latter part of the album I was losing interest but overall I'd say a fun 4 album.

Now this is what I'm talking about.

Samplelooppi elektronista musaa. Parhaat: Electricity, A Different Feeling, Frontier Psychiatrist

Loved this, very chill, never boring, can't believe I'd never heard of the album or even the artist before! Frontier Psychiatrist stood out as an absolute banger. I guess my luck must have been in this week, as I got two samplephonic albums back to back, with Eno/ Byrne My Life in the Bush of Ghosts yesterday and Entroducing wasn't too long back.

For this review, I will not factor in the second disc of remixes with the 20th-anniversary edition. I have heard of The Avalanches before as an electronic group. I remember listening to their third album, We Will Always Love You, and liking that release. However, it was only today that I learned the subgenre they belong to, called "plunderphonics". The compositions are entirely composed of samples merged and twisted together, such that fragments barely resemble the original piece and create a new whole. It's a similar type of song construction that DJ Shadow implemented for Entroducing, which was my second album on this journey. In that sense, I enjoyed The Avalanches' debut album, Since I Love You, as much as I did Endtroducing. Drawing back to that subgenre definition, I enjoyed how the samples were used to create these new danceable sounds and atmospheres, and how the tracks interweave from one into the next. Some personal highlights include the string samples and youthful vocal snippets on the opening title track, the swaying beats, wind instruments, and electronic loops that move to a 3/4 time signature in "Two Hearts in 3/4 Time", the drums from Vaughan Mason and Crew's "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" paired with the filtered female soprano vocals and synthesizers on "Electricity", and the horns and driving percussion paired with the twisted sample of a comedy sketch on "Frontier Psychiatrist". However, as much as I enjoyed the creativity on display and the interconnected nature of the songs, the album does drag in places, particularly between "Flight Tonight" and "Electricity," where the disco styling can feel one-note in its direction. The songs in this lull may not be bad, but they are not as ambitious as those I previously highlighted. Still, I recognize why Since I Left You is a pioneering album in its niche. In that regard, it comes with a solid recommendation. Update 5/13/2025: I decided to revisit Since I Left You upon nearing 300 albums into my journey, and I realized what didn't work for me with this record. It's the overall length of the album that I feel is a problem, running at a little over an hour. Contrary to the perceived lull in my initial review, there isn't a bad track on this album per se, and I do appreciate how each track in its intriguing sample manipulation neatly flows into one another. But after a while, it does start to drag a bit from my perspective. Again, I still enjoyed this album despite the length. It is a pioneering album for plunderphonics, one that certainly demands attention from the listener but is rewarding for all the little details and nuances that can be picked up in the construction.

Oddball and unique - I don’t think it’s even a part of a genre - but it’s a very good album none the less.

Alarming trend of only rating the albums I already like.

Since I Left You Frontier Psychiatrist

Since I Left You // Two Hearts In 3/4 Time // Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life // Frontier Psychiatrist // Live At Dominoes //

For the longest time I thought Frontier Psychiatrist was a Dan the Automator track. These guys aren't as cool as Dan but it's some solid stuff.

good electonic album nice layering of sounds

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. The groove throughout the album creates a nice pocket to just sit and coast in. Energizing and mellow at the same time. Some fun disco & psychadelic notes thrown in as well. Well done.

A total mind scrambler upon release. The heir apparent to Endtroducing but this one is all joy no tension. Like childhood - real, imagined and remembered - writ large. Feels old and new all at once. Slows a little in the later half but Live at Dominoes brings the party back to life.

Realmente un buen álbum, no me esperaba un sonido tan fresco, definitivamente lo escucharía de nuevo pronto

Why was this not in my library

Sample based electronic music from the 2000s. Samples from vinyl with a fair amount of static. Some occasional scratching. Lots of loops. Some tracks seamlessly transitions to the next which is really nice with this kind of music. Not heard before, but a lot of the samples are recognizable. Pretty interesting even though it is pretty chaotic - could easily have lost a couple of layers. The production does not sound very good, but that might as well be a choice to make it even more dirty.

Can't believe I've never heard this before. The type of chill Y2K electronica I like

fun tunes, strong mixes

This was an enjoyable one. I liked the sheer volume and variety of the samples, I mean there was stuff from everywhere. I loved that and it gave the album great variety and feel but also made it feel cohesive in its scatteredness. Best track was "Frontier Psychiatrist" such a fun little song, liked the story. I also really loved how different tracks would flow into each other so you couldn't really tell where one was ending and another began if you were just listening. Really helped tie the whole album together because it all felt like a progression, a cohesive whole with a lot of diversity, which can be very hard to do and do well. This album did that.

This album reminds me a lot of the work of the Pop Art movement, such as that by Roy Lichtenstein. In both cases, it relies upon some pre-existing piece (in Lichtenstein's case, a comic book panel; in the Avalanches', an audio sample). But by altering the context and scale, it becomes a totally separate work of art. (I realize this album is more similar to collage art, but the comparison remains the same.) Every other artist is just copying someone anyway. Favorite track: "Frontier Psychiatrist"

Mad Men theme worthy

This was fun. 4

8.1/10

If taking a bump of blow and shotgunning a can of Surge were an album. The song Electricity was great

Genuinely pleasantly surprised by this one. A beautiful and erratic cacophony of early 2000s electronic experimentation. Takes me back to a time when the internet was still the wild west, and society was still feeling optimistic about the future, coming out of the 90s but still pre-9/11. People might hate on the sampling style, which is undoubtedly experimental and pioneered the way for more modern sampling, but to me the album genuinely felt engaging and forced me to actively listen. Can't say that about a fair number of albums on this list that have felt mindless and disengaging throughout.

Lots to sink your teeth into. Dense with layered samples and definitely designed to be listened to in full with each track blending into the next. Nodding along throughout. Enjoyed the references to the first track in the last, making it almost cyclical. The odd sample grated on me (such as the vocal sample in Radio) but I can hardly complain as each sample comes and goes relatively swiftly. Frontier psychiatrist was the clear standout to me, had me grinning.

they really put their whole foot in this one, beautiful; little repetitive at times but a good listen

Amazing this is now over 20 years old. Still sounds fresh...

this slaps, thank u

All over the place in the best way!

I haven't heard of these folks, but this is an outstanding album! Sounds like some Dan the Automator stuff. Right up my ally. Cool artwork, too. I think Frontier Psychiatrist is my favorite, but I'll be spinning this a few more times. Solid 4 here.

I only caught some of the video for "Frontier Psychiatrist" but was so immediately enamored by the sound and visuals that I remembered The Avalanches, though I never saw the video again. Internet commerce was a relatively new thing back then, and I remember Since I Left You was my first ever purchase from this new company called Amazon. At least, it was supposed to be. $25 for an Australian import and a delivery that took weeks was less than ideal, but what else could I do? When it finally showed up, the cover was different. I opened it, played it, and realized that they sent me the "Since I Left You" maxi-single. Double-checking that I placed the order correctly, I contacted customer service and informed them of their mix up and that they sent me the wrong disc which had the same title and artist. They said they would send the correct album and provide a return slip for the single (which I had opened, unbeknownst to them). This time, it took about a month, but when it showed up, it was AGAIN the maxi-single. I contacted them again, telling them this is the first experience I had with their company, that I certainly wouldn't spend $25 on a maxi-single, and their inability to fix a mistake the second time makes me question how they prioritize their customers; I asked that they overnight me the correct album without additional charge, and to allow me to keep a copy of the maxi-single since they obviously wanted me to have it (and since I already opened it, still unbeknowst to them). This makes me sound like an asshole, but again this was the early days of e-commerce, and there were scams a-plenty and I was worried I wouldn't get a resolution; plus, I didn't want to explain the opened maxi-single. Well, they overnighted the correct CD, included a return slip for the unopened maxi-single, and I got to keep the opened one, which had additional tracks that were not on the album. Since then, I continued to purchase from Amazon, single-handedly making them grow into a billion dollar company. I heard other people started to use them too; they must have heard about my favorable review. Oh, and the album (and maxi-single) is impressive. I didn't realize it when I ordered it, but they consist entirely of pre-recorded material. This is a more mellow Paul's Boutique without the extra addition of vocals. "Frontier Psychiatrist" remains my favorite here, but "Since I Left You" has such a Fantasy Island 'welcome to paradise' vibe, you are transported to lush land of house exotico that keeps the party going for the album's duration. I don't recall songs by title so much as peak moments where that out-of-tune piano sample comes in, or they start chanting "Flight 2 2 is off to Honolulu" and the like. Unlike some electronica that is ripe for cutting and mixing into a DJ's live set, this work by The Avalanches is meant to play uninterrupted from start to finish. An impressive debut.

I love this album and have since I first heard it. It’s a little bit ridiculous, but it’s undeniably catchy and fun to listen to. Definitely worth hearing.

There's a lot of noises here, and some of them are quite grating. I have to say I was not a believer to start, but everything changed after 'Avalanche Rock'. On my second time through I didn't mind the first few tracks at all, so maybe I just needed to get used to them Standouts Flight Tonight Close To You Electricity Frontier Psychiatrist 4/5

Because of the heavy rotation of “Frontier Psychiatrist” on Much Music in Canada I have a soft spot for The Avalanches. It was probably my first time being exposed to this type of absurdist electronica mashup. I like their other songs on this too! Probably deserves a second listen but for now it’s a 4/5

Dance. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Favourite Song: Frontier Psychiatrist

Big surprise

It's a really Good record

Gelreat album

Title track is such a tune, loved this album back in the day. Still decent today!

Put this beside endtroducing for chill beats

A weird dreamy scratch album

An incredibly interesting piece of electronic music.

Good vibes.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM SO SO MUCH 😭😭 So groovy Since I left u is my breakup slay song

The title track was a huge hit on the UK back in 2000 but then nothing else was really heard from the Avalanches after that so I had never heard anything else on the album. I was pleasantly surprised with this I enjoyed it for the most part though only interest started to wain by the end and the title track is head and shoulders above everything else on the album.

Another good one! Lots of great tunes to get you moving.

I loved this. I only knew one song, so it was nice to place it in the album. I listened to it in a loop while working and did not even notice it going around.

Haven't heard these guys in about 20 years, first time listening to the whole album

++: Since I Left You, Close to You, A Different Feeling, Frontier Psychiatrist, Live at Dominoes +: Stay Another Season, Radio, Two Hearts in 3/4 Time, Avalanche Rock, Flight Tonight, Diners Only, Pablo's Christ, Etoh, Summer Crane, Little Journey, Extra Kings +-: Electricity, Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life 8,8/10

I'm not normally into this electronic / dance "plunderphonic" (a newly-learnt word for me) kind of music, but once in a while a record of a normally unwelcome genre comes along that's somehow able to make gateways into your soul. This is one such record that does it for me. It's partly out of familiarity (hearing it on Triple J back in the day and playing it myself every few years), and partly because it's a magnificent production. Crazy to think it's composed almost entirely of samples.

I've always rated the Avalanches as a slightly better version of Daft Punk. A fair few songs that miss but the album works really well together as a whole. Nice to have on in the background when having mates over etc. Great live as well

Solid album

Good for running, one or two odd songs

Feels like the connective tissue between albums like Paul's Boutique and DJs like Girl Talk - and mostly in a good way.

ai saatana, olin täysin varma että vastaan tulee niin lyssähtävää kitaratyöskentelyä ja kusista laulamista mutta kohtasin sen sijasta elektronista pumputusta.. musiikkia pikkulapsille, pliip ploop plip.... onneksi olen komea nuorimies. luovaa hullunkurisuutta.. kädet visusti kiinni vatsaan ja hekottaa hehehehehehe kulmakarvat nousussa eylid streched position pää kääntyy sivulta sivulle hekotusta heheheheheh...... mutta musiikkikin kuulostaa hyvältä jump around jiump around... every day we party rock it rock it rock it everyday... frontier psychiatrist

Wow. I had never heard of The Avalanches, but this is really good. Of course, you have to appreciate EDM, and I used to look down on "dance music", but just because it's got a good beat and is fun to dance to doesn't mean it can't be good music (the problem is that most dance music is pretty lame, so it's easy to stereotype it all.) I expect to revisit some of these songs. 4 stars.

What an enjoyable surprise this was. So funky and energetic. The only thing that lost me was that I cant point to a song in particular due to the nature of the presentation. Everything shifts and flows into one another, but maybe thats your jam. I'd give a 4.5 if I could.

A nice of variety of sounds yet remarkably cohesive. There are moments that sound a little too cluttered, though.

Frontier Psychiatrist es un temazo

Now that's interesting. Very listenable and different than anything I've really paid attention to before. Frontier psychiatrist is catchy af and the horses in the background are just 🤌🏼 in the most surprising way. I don't think I need two+ hours of it in my day, but appreciate the introduction.

Very interesting

Amazing

Nice sound. Want to listen to more than I did

Great samply album. Still remember the dancing miner!

JA! wieder einmal ein album das man den ganzen tag hören kann ohne dass es langweilig wird. samples von altbekannten songs, rhythmisch gemixt und „klangteppich“ ..

Electronica ganz cool.

I've always thought "plunderphonics" was a cool genre name. I'm familiar with "Frontier Psychiatrist" but never really dug deeper. The record itself is a pleasing groove, floating through each track and leaving you wondering how far you've traveled to get here. It trails a little near the end, but it's solid enough to warrant further listens. Favorite tracks: "Frontier Psychiatrist", "A Different Feeling"

A fun soundscape which would be better if the tracks were more distinct and didn't roll from one to another so much- WAIT. THIS IS WHERE FRONTIER PSYCHIATRIST COMES FROM?? Autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place... I get it. Favourite track: Frontier Psychiatrist.

At the beginning there is a pleasant nostalgic atmosphere. You can listen to it in the background, but it doesn’t cause a storm of emotions. 4/5

This felt like art, not music. The soundscape was fascinating and really well put together. The mix of sounds they put together was extremely impressive as well. But all its intricacies made it hard to engage with and I generally felt lost while listening (which I think the artists would take as a compliment). Album to hear before you die? No question. But is this something I’ll come back to often? Probably not

Really enjoyed the sampling and experimentalism of this one.

listened to again still an absolute masterpiece

As repetições dos samples e loops entre músicas faz você perde um pouco a noção de tempo, ainda mais ouvindo ele de cabo a rabo, mas de um jeito bom

New type of music to me. I loved it. DJ'ying is always an art form I admire. This is a very good listen and the craft is really something to admire. Album sequencing is also quite good.

Techno is another genre I'm just not super into but this album wasn't too bad. It's typically so repetitive (we get it you have a flight tonight!) or just so focused on a beat that I don't see any beauty in it. But this was pretty good to me. Songs were not too long and they were not so repetitive that I was bored

not quite that 5 magic but very good

this one grew on me, actually enjoyed it. this might be the first album on the list I had never heard of before that I might actually purchase! Only took 151 days before finding one....

This is entertaining. Definitely a good chill road trip album

очень софтовый, в каких-то моментах даже джазовый, альбом. Звучит свежо и приятно под весенне-летние деньки алкоальбом: лимонад лайм лимон

Since I Left You is a great experience. I love the sound palette in this album. So magical and charming. It's like the sweet spot between DJ Shadow and M.I.A. I would recommend the first 7 songs to anyone. The only problem I have with this album is its length. Maybe 10% less would do it.

It’s really good! The atmosphere, the vibes, if I’m not high and I’m listening, I kinda wanna be high and if I am high and listening well, turn on the Sega PlayStation dude bc I Found the World So New. 4 stars

Love the flow. Very nice subtle shifting through nice melodic songs

I’ve seen this on a lot of lists but never got super into it. It’s really good, but also seems really hyped to me.

Had "Frontier Psychiatrist" on repeat in high school and put it on a bunch of mix tapes one year. Still love it and this album.

It's actually pretty good, I had heard Frontier Psychiatrist before but not the album around it.

Enjoyable and interesting.

I don't have a ton of exposure to dance or Electronic music. I typically don't like it. I did like this, it grew on me over time and it put me in a better mood than when I started. This album felt like a collage of pieces, but where some electronic music sounds robotic when put together, this felt very human which I liked. This album felt like a journey and I think the concept of it as a cruise around the world taking it all in is a great concept and executed upon very well. Favorite tracks: Frontier Psychiatrist, Electricity, Live at Dominoes

quite enjoyable as background sound

Strong, groovy, beats. Great vibe music.

Very dancy, electronic music. It feels like a full dance club set with transitions and everything which is cool. And to think that everything is sampled from another song, it’s cool to see how it all fits together. Since I left you is my favorite track, though they’re all super cool. A nice use of music concrete, and a good way to kick off the 21st century. That being said, it’s not 5 stars it doesn’t really speak to me in that way. A lot of the samples can get repetitive and annoying and the development of every song is just though layering, with the songs mainly separated by tempo and drum pattern. Production is top notch too. It seems like it was a pretty big deal in electronic music.

I was excited for this one, since I had stumbled across the track Frontier Psychiatrist previously and really liked it. Ultimately, I was a little disappointed…the album is atmospheric and groovy, there is a lot going on, so it’s never boring. But there is maybe one other stand out track (Since I Left You); besides those two, there aren’t any songs I would come back to listen to outside the context of listening through the whole album. Maybe that’s good in some ways (I love an album that knows it’s an album—cohesive and interwoven), but it doesn’t really jive with how I tend to consume music.

First track sounds like it out of the 70s. I really like it. Ok. This is wild. It’s like someone wanted to go back and make the 70s record they always wanted to hear. This is a great blend of hip-hop and 70s disco and soul. I love this record.

love the transitions

Since I Left You really describes what i like about a lot of these electronica albums and that being that you can take any sound or sample and with the right composition, it can be a really catchy and fun song. Initially the album didn't seem like anything too special with the first two songs but then Radio came on and showed just how cool and drug-tripy (for lack of a better word) it is. The album is a bit long at around an hour but with its weirdness, it was more than enough to keep me liking it. Best Song: Frontier Psychiatrist Worst Song: Since I Left You

It's good

I liked it. After a while it all sounded the same and felt aimless and endless, but I still liked it. Too much for one sitting though.

I would consider Since I Left You to be a very good after party wind down album, (not my scene but if it was this is what I’d put on)

Une croisière électro entraînante.

Cool. Only knew 2 songs before but this is quite good.

I kind of admire Plunderphonics more than I actually like it. When I was first getting into Hip-Hop, I had one of my life’s first serious discussions about art when debating sampling as an art form with my mother. For what it’s worth, my mother is a fairly typically lower middle-class white woman, who with all the best will in the world, fell off of from popular music forms in the late 80’s. I think I managed to convince her of the art of the sample, and later about the art of rapping in general, during that conversation. She’ll now happily listen to whatever Rap I happen to be listening to, and can engage in a pretty good discussion about Kendrick Lamar if pressed. Despite my passionate defending of sampling as a form of reinterpretation and contextualisation, when it comes to my own active listening, I tend to stick with the more conservative example set by Hip-Hop, where the sample’s job is simple, and the lyrics and flow are the real stars of the artistic show. The Beastie Boys early albums and A Tribe Called Quest were the masters of this sort of style, taking either recognised and recognisable samples, or more obscure Jazz, R&B and Soul, and incorporating them into a backbeat for their rhymes. It’s a tried and tested formula, and for me, as reinterpretation and contextualisation I find it works beautifully. As such, I can appreciate Plunderphonics from a philosophical point of view. Taking the underlying idea (wouldn’t it be cool if we took this Black Sabbath riff and put a John Bonham beat under it?) and applying a maximalist vision to it (wouldn’t it be cool if we took a load of different samples and made a whole song without the rapping with them?) it served to create an entirely new art form. I am primarily a writer, focusing mostly on Realistic short stories and novels and Romantic and Confessional poetry, and I’ve engaged in Plunderphonics literary equivalent, Found Poetry, many times. I can understand the artistic drive behind the style very well. And as such, I’m not going to make the statement I so often make when I don’t like an album or style, that I have no idea why someone would want to make music that sounds like this, for two reasons: 1.) I think that Since I Left You sounds pretty fantastic, both regarding the music itself and the quality of it’s production, and 2.) I absolutely understand the artistic reasoning behind making an album that sounds like this. But despite all of the appreciation, I still struggle with full enjoyment of Since I Left You specifically, and electronic music in general. It’s a genre that seems, to me, to be rooted in a fairly specific place, that of a club or a rave, and I struggle to find a time when I would want to sit down and listen to it just as music. Outside of the singles intended specifically to be played on dancefloors, it seems to be a very album heavy genre, where the intention is to sit and listen (or dance and listen, I guess) to the full experience in one go. And for albums over a certain length, and under a certain track number, I find that quite difficult. My brain is primed for short bursts. My two most listened to genres are Rock and Jazz, and they both scratch different itches that electronica never seems to be able to reach. I quite enjoyed the experience of listening to Since I Left You, despite it losing me a little in the last quarter. It’s music I find I can put in in the background and concentrate to. But I can never bring myself to love it. That is a failure on my part, no doubt. But a failing I believe I share with a great number of the general listening public. Electronica is, I suspect, a ride or die genre. And I’m afraid my ride or die genre is Jazz. I’ve spent my time tuning my ear to that genre and it’s styles and intricacies, to the detriment of other ride or die genres. I made my choice, and I don’t regret it. But I did appreciate Since I Left You

I haven’t heard of The Avalanches before. They’re a fairly modern band to be included on the list, with this album being released in 2000, but I live under a rock so it completely passed me by. Then again, I was 10 when it came out so maybe I can be forgiven. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Since I Left You This was a nice chilled out album. Apparently the genre is called plunderphonics, which I’ve genuinely never heard of in my life. To my ears, it’s relaxed electronica. It felt nice as ambient sound to have on while working, but I’m not sure I’ll be rushing back to seek this out again. It’s good, but didn’t blow me away.

Easy listen, classic electronic album can't go wrong with it reminds me of LCD, toro y moi etc.

This surprised me. I liked it a lot. Why do I like this over EDM? I think it's the analog samples and organic feel. Also, although it's repetitive, it never went overboard. Cool sounds, atmospheric production, and playful vibe.

I really enjoyed it.

lijkt wel alsof ik een of ander youtube hiphop/jazz to listen and chill & relax to heb aangezet dat is op zich wel nice hoor daar niet van Wss wel de eerste die dit deden dan, en dat is wel heel vet

Favorite Tracks: Frontier Psychiatrist Since I Left You Electricity

Cool use of textures and layering familiar samples made it welcoming yet fresh to listen to - first time exploring this genre through a full album. I liked it a lot and it was at the end of the day just a fun album to listen to, calm, relaxing and easygoing music.

Frontier Psychiatrist brought me to this band. An unbelievable song that is only great if you watch the video. I really liked this album. Not all of it but most of it. My only issue with this type of music is where do you play it? It seems like it’s fit to have its songs remixed into some dancehall anthem and that’s ok. I can hear it. You won’t want to play this at a wedding or while you are pregame drinking but you’ll want to play it if pure lyrical singing isn’t your thing. If anything, listen to my choice cut, watch the video and repeat. Choice Cut: Frontier Psychiatrist

Klar fyra dock.

I really enjoyed the vibes on this album.

Since I left you I found the world so new And every day Yeah, this is pretty good. 4/5

Been on my “to listen to” list since a friend played me Frontier Psychiatrist like 10 years ago lol. Banger album

pretty good overall

Better in memory than playing

I’ve always loved this album. I do think some songs are definitely standouts, so it’s not a straight 5 stars, but I still love it.

Really cool sampling and it’s so rare to find albums that flow together this well like it’s all one song. Very unique and expertly produced!

A strong 3 that Frontier Psychiatrist lifts up to a 4.

Torn between 3 and 4 Solid electronic ambient hip hop music, some of the best of its kind I’ve heard. I don’t think I’d ever just sit down and listen to this album the way I can with some other music I love, but it’s especially great background. It feels too harsh to call it ONLY background music though I can appreciate there’s a thoughtful craftsmanship that goes into plunderphonics, even if it doesn’t involve many real musicians playing real instruments, which I usually prefer

I absolutely loved this, this kind of genre is just such a nice listen. It is such a lovely break from the standard type of song by song album and felt like a full experience. Although it isn't necessary I love when albums are made with the flow in mind. It is great having the best pop song ever sat next to the second best pop song ever, but if the context doesn't continue then it just makes the album feel plastic and completely made up. Stuff like this is great, I often got lost on what song I am listening too, I couldn't keep up, but I love that. I still can't give it 5 although it is close. I think it going to be really tough to give something 5 stars on a first listen, especially in a genre I don't know much about. Another grower for sure, a possible vinyl perhaps but a safe 4/5 for this rating. Stand out "songs": A Different Feeling Electricity Frontier Psychiatrist Side note: Portishead came on after the album finished so I decided to give their album a listen and now I realise I really love this genre. Brilliant stuff

Never heard of this album before and was pleasantly surprised.

Good stuff but the bonus remixes are better.

2 of things songs remind me of my wife so much that this needs to be a 4.

Great album that defines the plunderphonics genre.

I liked this and am going to have to listen to it again.

I liked it but I am not sure what made me like it. Sounds a bit like fat boy slim but on the other hand completely different.

would i listen this often? probably not. did i enjoy the times i did listen to it? for sure.

OOOooooh baby OOOH! On a hot streak right now of like four albums in a row from the mid-80’s or later. A lot of people with my listening habits give this one an instant 5 and point out the similarities to Daft Punk’s Discovery (which again, is better than this album and not on this list somehow). I think this album’s shining moments are the dreamy, blissful waves of samples that come together to create a sound collage. Extra points to this record for creating one of my favorite feelings you can get from music: sample-based ecstasy. Very much worth listening to their most recent album, We Will Always Love You. It tightens up the song structure, and has a handful of INCREDIBLE additive guest features on it. & specifically an 11/10 song built entirely around a Carpenters sample. This record is a little shy of a 5 for me, with the only detractor being sometimes it gets a little too lost in a fugue state with the sampling starting to all blend together a little toooo much. Everything else though? Beautiful.

This was absolutely mental. I loved it.

Loop after loop after loop after loop after… Whatever, I liked it for the most part except the wispy female vocals.

i’d give this like a 7 i like the concept of it flowing into itself song after song, making it seem like a really different experience, wasn’t expecting their style to be like how it is, very unusual listen, enjoyable though.

I enjoyed this. Nice background music/passive listening. Probably better it doesn't have singing

immaculate vibes

still remember pretty well my first listen, it says a lot about how much i love this record

Quirky but interesting

The avalanches are incredible. Their albums do not disappoint. Wish they had more lyrics to go over some of the production. Other than that very fun listen

This is missing some rap verses. Cool to hear sampling and beat making in other genres.

I love this, and am amazed it's never popped up on my radar before. Very rarely do I hear something and feel like it's actually proper original - I get that this album uses samples quite heavily, but despite that being a genre in-itself this feels super fresh, inspired and is just good fun. I can't bring myself to give it a 5, though it would be an easy 4.5 if it were possible!

helll ye, skating i Risør i 2018 vibes

Cool loungy music. Great to listen to when working.

"Since I Left You" is the debut studio album by Australian electronic music group the Avalanches. Some interesting genres listed including dance, sampledelia, disco, plunderphonics and art rock. The album was recorded and produced by bandmembers Robbie Chater and Darren Seltmann. They recorded separately at two different studios where they swap tapes and combined. There was extensively sampling from different musical genres. The duo estimated their number of samples at approximately 3500. Woah! The album was widely acclaimed and commercially hit #8 in the UK and #10 on the US Electronic Albums Chart. Noises from a large crowd opens "Since I Left You." Strings and do-wop give this an airy feel. Fantastic sampling of the Main Attractions "Everyday." A woman repeating "Since I left you, I found a world so new." The song turns more disco. This is a wonderful song. The fourth single "Radio" has a funky disco-dance beat. "Sending those signals" is excessively repeated throughout. The first single "Electricity" goes all over the place. A sample from Opera singers Sally Russell and Antoinette Halloren opens the song which goes disco with a great dance beat. Samples from Blowfish's "Rapp Dirty" are thrown in. It appropriately ends back with the opera singers. The song I've heard the most from this album is "Frontier Pyschiatrist." Samples from comedy duo Wayne and Shuster add to the chaos. There's an orchestral background from Enoch Light. Endless loops of horses neighing add to this psychotic and wild ride. You could write a whole page on each of the album's 18 songs with all that's going on.b But, at the same time there are no breaks between songs which makes it one long song. The music is dance, disco and ambient at times. Songs change styles within songs. Very creative sampling. This is a great album and one worth checking out.

Super chill electronica, easy to listen to and enjoy.

I liked it very much

This is nothing like anything I've heard from the late 90s / early 00s; I would have thought this was more recent. The sampling is really fun and really spans across all genres. The beats are also unique and entertaining. I am also a sucker for seamless track transition; it's like one big stream of consciousness. I will listen again. 4/5

Honestly, pretty cool stuff. Chill to listen to while working because I can't understand any of the lyrics.

I wrote up a whole review but it didn't save. Long story short, i was surprised that *this* was the album that contains "Frontier Psychiatrist," a song that's been bouncing around in the periphery of my music knowledge for almost 25 years. I didn't recognize anything else off the album, and i was very surprised when it started and the horror movie chorus kicked in. I enjoyed it. It was intricately made of a million samples and moved through so many different vibes. Maybe too much of a good thing on one album? The ghostly chorus gives it a 4.

I don't know if I could listen to this a lot, but I did really enjoy it as a whole

Hell yes, this album is still on my playlist. Good memories of my then young son as many times I thought " that boy needs therapy "

Brilliant dance album. Super enjoyable. Amazing dance tracks and how it was produced is nothing short of incredible. It does drag on a while after but some funky tracks. F.song: Since I left you

Electronic music that plays calmly in the background.

Frank Zappa con más bit de Los 2000…

Good, homogenous album

Interesting and unique.

Some parts were a bit weird and that one piano dissonant, but most of it was really cool

I believe my kids would like me to say, "Slappin bops, all bangers." Me, I'm enveloped by the craftsmanship of the album. The fusion of electronic sequencing, cuts, breaks, samples, and melodies are a real work of devotion to an artform. You can get up and dance to it, or you can vibe with it while you're focusing. I'd heard 'Frontier Psychiatrist' and I'm glad this list brought me to the album and the album that it came from.

Didnt know them. I liked It a lot. For special moments

I have always bene a fan of Frontier Psychiatrist and it has featured on many playlist. but because I discovered the video on MTV back in the day I never did a deep dive on them so this is the first time I get to hear the entire album and i really enjoyed it a lot

Great sound. Unique album. Will be listening again.

Bought it on release and still love it today.

Right craic altogether! Not sure where their place in the golden age of electronic music scene was between Groove Armada and Daft Punk, but this is deffo an album worth listening to between the diversity of samples and how many told a story, coherent or otherwise. Strongest song: Frontier Psychiatry, Live at Dominoes Weakest song: Flight Tonight

DJs de musica de ambiente, me gusta. Un poco menos que el de ayer de Black Stones, pero esta muy bien para trabajar.

Wow, I wasn't sure how to take this album at first. Was it serious? Was it joyful? Was it fun? Was it a groove? Did I want to dance to it? Well after listening to a few tracks I figured it was all of the above! Unbelievable how the Avalanches could fit all of these seemingly unrelated samples into not just one song but seamlessly throughout the whole album and make it all fit! Great album. Super fun to listen to! Favorite Songs: Since I Left You, Frontier Psychiatrist, Radio, Stay Another Season, Extra Kings. Rating: 4

Avalanches + Stephen Merrit = early Jens Lekman. Prove me wrong! This is a classic, especially the opening track, which never fails to put me in a good mood. Some really stylish and adept sampling work on this record that is truly a joy to listen to. This sounds like a party I want a standing invitation to. Favourite tracks: Since I Left You, Stay Another Season, Radio, Frontier Psychiatrist

I love this album.

Great album, flows from one song to another.

Good work music - fun, but not too distracting. Definitely would listen to multiple times and search out other music by this group.

I love the start of this but I find it trails off at the end.

Actually iconic wow

Rätt intressant loopigt.

Very pleasant and listenable, but some of the songs got a bit repetitive.

A sort of 'wall of sound' but using samples. So much going on, would like to hear how it was constructed (like these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFEZiMyfSYI ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Epr8xDE3Kgk). The song breaks were a little jarring on YT - I'd like to hear it as one uninteruppted track. Really good. 4.0

Not sure why I like this album so much. Not at all like anything else I listen to.

I quite enjoyed it

This one is fun. Like, lil fruity drink on the beach fun.

Pretty listenable early sample jams with a few solid hits (mostly the opening title track and Frontier Psychiatrist)

I’ve had this since it came out. Still love it.

At first playthrough I was not sold at all for some reason, even though it feels like this should fit me like a hand in a glove. Not sure how that idiom translates from swedish to english, but you get my point. I gave it a second try and turned up the volume a bit, and then it was better received. I think I missed out on some of the grooves when listening at lower volume, and perhaps didn't pay much attention. Their sampling skills are very impressive, but I feel that it sometimes becomes a bit too much. The funny thing with this album is that it doesn't have any single song that stands out as a clear hit for me, and in fact my least favourite one is the one with some of the most plays; 'Frontier Psychiatrist'. But all songs just keep a very high bar, which still makes this a 4 for me, albeit a slightly weak one.

Didn't know what to expect when I started this and my initial thoughts were this was a bit jumbled, but then once embraced that I started to enjoy the ride. This is an incredible beat and sample album. I especially got hype when the Raekwon Glaciers of Ice sample came on.

Since I Left You - 10/10 Stay Another Season - 8.5/10 Radio - 8/10 Two Hearts in 3/4 Time - 8/10 Avalanche Rock - 8/10 Flight Tonight - 8/10 Close to You - 8/10 Diners Only - 8/10 A Different Feeling - 9/10 Electricity - 10/10 Tonight - 8/10 Pablo's Cruise - 8/10 Frontier Psychiatrist - 10/10 ETOH - 8.5/10 Summer Crane - 8/10 Little Journey - 8/10 Live at Dominoe - 9/10 Extra Kings - 8/10 TOTAL - 153/180

Really liked this. Even though I've never heard anything like it

Awesome expertimental album.

Got A Different Feeling when I listened to this. Could feel the Electricity almost as if I was plugged right into the Radio on a Little Journey through the airwaves.

i love anyone who mixes a hundred samples into a single track in a nice sounding way, and the avalanches do a great job at it. their other album has the bangers on it tho!

Better than I expected

Frontier Psychiatrist is fantastic. The rest is ok.

Was interesting didn't entirely dislike it so I'll give it 4 stars because it was kinda unique I'm a really bad critic

Good Jazz

Man let me start by saying I absolutely LOVED this album.. In no way shape or form was I ready or expecting THIS! These DJs have these funky mashes that just remind me of something like Pogo.. I have been listening to this on repeat since I started it! My favorite tracks on this thing are 'Since I Left You', 'Two Hearts In 3/4 Time', and 'Close To You' to just name a few.. I had some songs I didn't love on this thing, like 'Flight Tonight' but overall I loved this thing. Overall 4.1/5

Purely psychosomatic

8.5/10 Highlights: Since I left You Frontier Psychiatrist

I dug it, should listen again closer

In a nutshell: A work of pure genius. Sampling and sampledelia is nothing new. But the boys from The Avalanches put a new spin on it. Every song is a collage. The sounds are lifted from obscure vinyls found in thrift shops and pasted together to create a sonic journey. It is an engineering feat to create an (18 track!) dance album in the late 90s with minimal studio interference. And it doesn't sound messy. Robbie and Darren didn't keep track of how many samples were used. Numbers range between 200 and 3500. Based on the website WhoSampled, I'd say over 800 samples sounds about right. This number includes a handful of samples used throughout the album to tie it all together. It's a nice foreshadowing tool. Example - the horse neighs from Frontier Psychiatrist (Track 13) make an appearance in Stay Another Season (Track 2). It may not be to everyone's taste but The Avalanches deserve credit for creating a complex DIY album. Brace yourself for a long ride, but a fun one. Overall: 8/10

Unique band, not many that do ‘sounds’ remixing or whatever you’d call it.

4.5/5. My best mate reckons it’s one of Australia’s finest records and I’m inclined to agree. To think that these two cunts took 16 years to make another album after this one.

Aged incredibly well, this is sampling realized to its full potential.

I really liked this album. A good mix of sounds that flow well together. Great for work music.

- Electricity was a banger - Was not expecting this album to sound like this, insanely good - Love the variety of sounds, great music to have in the background

Great background music. Creates a mood and flows, with subtle song distinctions, yet is varied and interesting

Mola. Mezcla de música dance/electrónica y plunderphonics/collage de sampleos.

Cool trippy album, not my taste but pretty good

3.9 or is it 4.... Super nice, soft chemical brothers, good for working

Good to have on as background music. Low-key, good beats

Great sampling. I remember some of these tracks very well from the time.

😎🕺🏼

Pretty good instrumental album. Many songs ran a bit long and were too repetitive for my liking.

Fun dance record. It suffers from the same repetitiveness as other dance records, but somehow it's more tolerable. Favorite song: Since I Met You.

"Since I Left You", "A Different Feeling", "Electricity" are beautiful. I was previously familiar with "Frontier Psychiatrist", but not The Avalanches themselves. "Flight Tonight" and "Diners Only" are repetitive to the point of annoying. The back half of this album is surprising the better than the A side. This would be a shoo-in for 5 stars if there weren't a few irritating tracks throughout the album. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Pretty good, lots of samples. I it sounds a bit dated, but I still think it holds up.

interesting techno album

I missed this one as didn't have time to listen that day, but came back a few days later and am bloody glad I did!

Great instrumental DJ record. Complex and layered instrumentals, but occasional repetitive lyric/vocal samples on some tracks are grating. Stand out tracks are tge title track Since I Left You, Two Hearts in 3/4 Time, Closer to You, Tonight May Have to Last Me All My Life, and Frontier Psychiatrist
