Reviews (page 5 of 10)
Great album start to finish. I was familiar with a couple of the songs but the whole album is solid as a full listen through.
I’m VERY familiar with this album. Can’t wait to dive in again.
I rate it: came into this album not feeling it from just the look of the album. You can imagine my face when I recognized half the tracks and clocked DOOM collaborated on one of them (not on the album). This felt like a strong electronic album with strong beats and sampling which was just perfection. Do I think it's the best? Not by any means but almost felt like a slightly less experienced Daft Punk and I'm here for that.
I kinda really like this. Catchy, cool samples, almost a high energy ambient album. Frontier Psychiatrist is a jam.
Really enjoyed for how early (2000) this record was. Repetitive at times but good use of vocals and sampling
Come for Frontier Psychiatrist but stay for the rest of the album, especially the title track, it's just the epitome of early 2000s sunny dispositions. A ton of samples all layered together to weave a tapestry of feel good vibes, shame the world would come crashing down less than a year after this debuted and feel good jams went on the back burner.
Masterful sampling and production. I go back to this one at least once a year, especially that opener
Title track is a 10/10
Immersive
Very chill and very surprised I didn't know about it previously. Definitely see it's influence in the likes of Dangermouse, later J5, and more. This is literally the textbook on how to properly use samples.
Old R&B meets hip-hop? Background theme music for sure. Good walking/workout tunes.
2 brilliant brilliant songs
Fun album. Unexpected
Really cool. I love EDM that's this good and from 2000. Unique and interesting pretty lights vibes 4.4
Happy Beats Good Mashup
Nice disco beats.I don’t really like albums made of beats but this album was really nice.
I really only knew The Avalanches through Wildflower. This is a great precursor but their sophomore album is better.
"Since I Left You" and "Live at Dominoes" main favs, Enjoyed the album, good groovy tunes, will be listening again.
good vibes. great project. really engaging yeah
Excellent album, and absolutely perfect example of sampling done brilliantly. Absolutely loved this one. Frontier Psychiatrist is the stand out track but the whole album passes beautifully.
Good looking even coming close to naming all the samples featured on this extremely detailed and well produced album. The Avalanches is spewing beats at such a pace that it’s hard to keep track of everything; and somewhere along the ride I almost lose the grip myself.
Vette samples, lekkere plaat
Frontier Psychiatrist was an MTV2 classic, so nice to hear the rest of the album that spawned it.
Too much ambiant stuff to be perfect
BEST SONGS: -Since I Left You -Close To You
Each track just blends so well into each other. Always fun to revisit from time to time. 4/5
went way harder than I thought it would
Wow. I haven’t listened to this whole thing in a LONG time. Forgot how psychadelic and borderline schizophrenic it is. This is amazing.
4/5 because it's kinda long for a dance album and gets a little too "indie" in spots, but otherwise this is really cool. Insane how they had this sound back in 2000. Liked the overarching story. BT - Stay Another Season - Close to You - A Different Feeling - Tonight May Have to Last Me All My Life - Frontier Psychiatrist - Little Journey 7/19/23
That was fun, probably will revisit!
Cool
Just an incredible album
I listened to this years ago, clicked ‘Since I Left You’ and then rather disintegrated rest as a ragbag of plastic soul. Which turned out to be unfair as this is a lovely, summery cocktail of an album. Maybe veering a bit towards the cheesy on occasion, but it’s just made with such obvious pleasure and the desire to give pleasure. Sunshine for the ears.
Always thought this album was like an indie classic turns out its an amazing sample record i loved it so much
This is very chill and easy to listen to music. Nothing super jumps out at me, but that isn't a bad thing. I rather enjoy this. I can easily vibe/listen to this. They give me big Fatboy Slim vibes. Overall pretty good. Nothing really jumps out, but it is easy to vibe to. A low 4/5
Nice :) #house #eletronic #receiving
love the transitions favs - tonight - frontier psychiatrist - since i left you - a different feeling - little journey - extra kings
I ended up liking this album a lot more than I thought I would. I didn't know how I'd feel about something that was mostly just samples but it was really good.
Such a fun album! Pairs well with a sunny summer day. I’m not as in love with this album as some are, but even leaving aside the amazing technical effort put into this album’s production, the appeal is very easy to understand. The compositions stand strong, separate from the samples from which they’re sourced. Very well deserving of a spot on this list!
gostosinho
Great album, love the sampling style
nice album, very different and left of field. I would listen to it again
Curtia e nem sabia. Frontier Psychiatrist
Amazingly composed, and fairly enjoyable
Groundbreaking use of samples. Too long though.
Very summery. Nice.
Very early Gorillaz Daft punk vibes. Album got better and better as it went on, unlike most albums. Rating: 4.5
very cool album, also still music despite all the samples and innovative stuff. unlike some albums that experiment so much they dont sound nice anymore. i guess thats why its special.
I listened to this about 6 times yesterday. It's a good work album. Will definitely be revisiting.
4.2/5
nice vibes
Didn't know about these guys until know. Quite solid. Every track flows seemlessly to the next one. Radio and Frontier Psychiatrist are standouts. The tracks have room to breathe for some fascinating samples using funk, pop standards and various influences. Fades a bit at the end but this was an enjoyable listen.
Already loved this album.
Good, very noisy, lots going on, fun
Really, really good listen.
This was a pretty awesome listen. I could see it being a 5 upon a relisten, but for now it's a strong four. I would love to pick up a CD of this. The songs flowed very seamlessly into each other, though the effect is kind of lost since I listened on a streaming service with ads. Still pretty cool though! My favourite songs were Electricity, Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life, and Frontier Psychiatrist, but favourites are hard to chose.
I kept wanting to hate this album, but then it would just reinvent and reinvent and draw me back in. I had never heard it or really of the band at all and I was just fascinated by it particularly because I didn't and haven't read the back story about who they are. Just enjoyed it cold and was pretty impressed. Great collaborators as well. I thought this one was pretty cool.
This is a fun album!
already listened to it, very good
The first great Plunderphonics record, The Avalanches take digging through the record bin to another extreme, using all of their findings to create a smashing dance record. While not as earth-shaking as big beat, “Since I Left You” makes up for it in its unreal flow, seamlessly joining together songs with a head-bobbing beat with obscure samples. And since they approached it from a “no one’s gonna listen to this, let’s do whatever” mentality, they create the oddest collection of fusions seen this side of Melbourne. Great as both a pure dance record and as IDM performed by an alien mixtape. Standout Songs: “Since I Left You” “Radio” “Electricity” “ETOH”
Obviously love it
This grew on me as I listened - new and different, yet familiar. It's really well-layered and nuanced. Looking forward to giving it more listens, I think it'll keep revealing more and more each time!
I think I've tried several times to get into this record through the years... I definitely don't dislike it, but to me, there's very little glue holding the whole thing together. That being said, 'Frontier Psychiatrist' is a certified ripper.
I’ve always thought this genre was more of a palate cleanser than anything else, but I really enjoyed this one. Not enough to listen to it again because, I’m a sucker for lyrics, but this is perhaps the best album of this genre I’ve ever heard, whatever this genre is called? The structure and chords were fantastic. The way they use 3/4 timing in “Two Hearts in 3/4 Time” is really dope in a way I haven’t heard before. 4/5
Fantastically quirky, full of intelligent samples and catchy beats
Great way to start a day - positive, uplifting, joyous.
Yeah!
I didn't enjoy this on the first listen. I went back and had this in the background while doing some work and I enjoyed it a lot.
One of my all time favorite albums, listening now brings back a lot of memories from the summer after graduating High School, driving around windows down, blaring Since I Left You. There wasn't anything else quite like this album at that time. Help pave the way for many densely layered electronic albums since, Stand out tracks "Frontier Psychiatrist", and of course "Since I Left You".
While I did not love every song on this album, the overall sound and flow and construction and musicality of this album blew me away.
Plunderhouse.
4.3 - A warm, upbeat and lovingly composed dance record that flows perfectly for a full hour. Also a terrific piece of sampledelia in the vein of DJ Shadow, Panda Bear...Highlights: "Frontier Psychiatrist", "Tonight..."
Ooooohhhhh I really like this. Love the crackley vinyl effect and the choice of samples. Excellent for chilling out. Omg I love Frontier Psychiatrist.
This is what electronic music is all about. I got a lot of enjoyment out of this album, standout track - Frontier Psychiatrist
I really vibed with this. It all flows so nicely, each song goes into the next seamlessly. It was all over the place, crazy as a coconut
Album number 365 of this big old journey and it's an exciting one. One of the first truly great albums of this millennium, this is immaculately produced and just a very impressive and groovy experience. I'm taking off one star just because, other than the title track, I've never really got a lot emotionally out of the record
Weird and fun, with a couple of my favourite dance tunes - frontier psychiatrist being the absolute best. So many samples, from so many random places, that it can sound jumbled. But when they get it right, they get it so right!
Some chill hip hop beats to work/study to
hey its that psychiatrist song
Better than I expected. I’d never heard of them.
This one was a new listen; definitely put a smile on my face and will be adding it as a regular session listen. I could see this as a great party starter for a summer BBQ kinda thing.
Sounded great and was the perfect length. Surprisingly original even if a couple too many songs sounded the same. A great record.
Mostly great
Incredibly of its time, but not dated.
The Avalanches found a unique sound that helped Electronica find the mainstream with future artists. It is fascinating that now, years later, they are beginning to get the recognition they deserve. Sampling not only older R&B tracks, but using different drum and orchestration pieces in a multi-layered album, it is easy to forget just how innovative this was because it set the tone for the genre.
love this. cool transitions
Wild, out-there fun. Not one's cup of tea, generally, but this takes off to otherworldly places and mostly stays there. Awfully listenable for being so densely layered.
Not a big listener of electronic, but I really enjoyed this. Will definitely listen to more. And their new album features Johnny Marr!
Brings back memories of my time working at Virgin Megastores whilst I was a student. This album was played a lot and listening to it again took me right back. It’s a vibrant and bright listen and always shifting enough to keep you tuned in. A couple of standout numbers.
Bra fredagsmusikk 🙌
An interesting album, basically all samples. Best listened in a row as there's smooth transitions between songs, still I've liked certain bits more than the otehrs. Saved songs: Since I Left You, Flight Tonight, A Different Feeling, Frontier Psychiatrist, Live At Dominoes
Loved the extended version. Learning it was all made with vinyl samples blew my son away.
Great example of mixing using samples. I had no problem enjoying this album in the background while I worked. I'm not so sure I'd recommend it as a must listen, but I would definitely relisten to this. 4/5.
Sonic madness. Wouldn't you just hate to be the lawyer in charge of sample clearance? Some of these LPs have never seen the light of day. A real good time, a great albums that stands toe to toe with the likes of DJ Shadow's debut. There's something for everyone to recognise on this.
I enjoyed the majority of the album, the first little bit didnt grasp my attention, but then it picked up, an interesting and different listen Very satisfying that its exactly 1 hour long 4
It's like MF DOOM for electronic music. Grows on you the more you listen.
Pleasantly surprised at this one, when thinking about my dislike for the genre.. Generally good transitions and some fun tracks Favourites: since I left you, Radio, tonight may have to last me all of my life Least fave: Frontier psychiatrist 4/5
instrumental hip-hop, acid jazz, and funk combine in a lovely box o' chocolates of an album.
Instrumental success
Different tunes
Listened to on 9/21/22 3/5 Favorite song: since I left you The idea behind this album of flowing bits of music together flawlessly is genius but also pure chaos at times
This remains an extremely cool album to listen to all the way through, even with some really weird songs throughout. Since I Left You is still one of my favorite songs.
Wasn't familiar with the album, really enjoyed it, would give it another listen, set a lovely atmosphere
Love this. I knew the title track and Frontier Psychiatrist from before, but never listened to the album. This is one that is very much an album rather than a collection of songs, it flows so well and it manages to be a really easy listen to have on in the background whilst working and worth delving into deeper for a proper listen. 4/5, will definitely listen to again. Amazed by the complexity of it too.
Really great album. Amazing sampling, smile inducing tunes. Bought this record a few years ago off the back of Frontier Psychiatrist. Highlights: Since I Left You, Frontier Psychiatrist, Close to You, Flight Tonight
Pretty sweet grooves and vibes. Definitely will relisten/put this in regular rotation.
It's somewhere between J Dilla and Kamasai Washington, but with a few too many horse samples.
I had never heard of this band, but I really enjoyed it. I liked how the musical themes carried from track to track, and told a musical story.
Never heard of them like many. Really enjoyed the energy
I recognized the first track but otherwise had never heard of The Avalanches or this album before now. I had to give it a re-listen after listening to a podcast about how it came to be (thanks Ryan). Definitely appreciated the artistry and intense amount of work that went into making it on the second go. Certainly an album I'll go back to.
Really enjoyable listen, Frontier Psychiatrist was a song I only ever knew casually and in passing (and I didn't know the name or artist). Hearing the album build slowly and then having that drop was a fun surprise. My only gripe, if you could call it that, was that I didn't hear anything that I recognized as a hook until "Electricity" which is the 10th track on the album. I feel like the whole thing would be just as effective (and more concise) if you chopped off the front 25% of the runtime. I'll be coming back to this, for sure.
Love this album and its clever use of samples. Ground breaking stuff at the time, but it just drags on a little too much for me in some places. A Different Feeling into Electricity is the best part of this album. 4.5 but cant get to 5. So 4/5
Chilled out mellow groves, theres a time and place for this and I can see myself listening to it again
I actually own this album, and have always been impressed by the Avalanches' ability to create music using almost nothing but meticulously layer samples. It's almost an aural analog to pointillism. Very cool.
Eclectic R&B house that kept me pumped for hours. Sometimes I need music with few lyrics & a good beat. The album felt like musical mixed media with bits & pieces from everywhere coming together cohesively in funky way.
Tightly knit and stupidly chill
While Wildflowers is definitely the better album, this one really showed what you could do with sampled music and set the stage for the future. And it’s still very listenable
Klassikkoasemaan noussutta sämpläysmusaa.
Heitt stöff, alveg hægt að dilla sér við þessa plötu frá upphafi til enda.
I thought I was going to hate this, but I actually really enjoyed it. Not typically my cup of tea, but it was quite good.
Fab stuff. Mostly instrumental bobbins, but with good beats and little samples of this and that. Sometimes a bit self indulgent. I get why others mightn't rate it, but it's right up my street.
Good background for work
Wow! Lekkere mix van soul, zuid-amerikaanse muziek en drum'n'bass. Heel interessant en eigenzinnig. Leuk. ****
Avalanches has a few good songs in the mix. I do love the sampling in their songs. The right combinations make a song good. I love "A Different Feeling". I think I tend to like the more dance songs, which can be the less popular ones according to Spotify. I think they're good about creating an atmosphere in each song. "Tonight May Have to Last Me All My Life" has the feeling of a drunken speakeasy band playing at 4 am. They're good with pitch bending at irregular times and including the crackle like you're listening to a vinyl record. This feel like it takes a few listens to understand where The Avalanches are coming from in creating each song.
Dance. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Love a great party album that delivers a great vibe. Sorry I missed you the first time around.
great samples - not normally my style but I liked a lot of it. I'll be looking into their other albums
interesting album - some really great house music
I love this album, Dancey with a lot of different samples.
Pog förstalåt
Good electronic sound
Avalanches uvijek dobri.
Controversial opinion: the more recent Avalanches albums are a bit better, and contain more good songs. But this album isn't a must-hear because of 'good songs', is it? It earns it's place on the list (and my possibly-slightly-generous star rating) for three good reasons: 1. Sampling isn't impressive. But sampling *on this scale* is, I think, something of an art form. To stitch together a vibrant, hour-long collage of music entirely from samples is pretty unique and remarkable. 2. I always like to reward albums that flow seamlessly, and The Avalanches are exceptional in that respect. I love the way they use filters and foley to make it sound like you're physically moving from one track to the next on a continuous, kaleidoscopic journey. 3. Frontier Psychiatrist. I heard this on the school bus when I was 10 and probably assumed that was just how music was going to be in the 21st century. I still haven't heard anything like it since.
Very much enjoy Avalanches. Not crazy about the expanded deluxe version of this album, but the standard stuff is great.
I kinda wish more songs on this album sounded like "Frontier Psychiatrist", since that's undoubtedly the best song here. I've been really harsh on these dance albums (and holy shit there's a lot of them on this list), but I really enjoyed this one. It was fun, funky and criminally insane. A bit too long though. None of the songs after "Frontier Psychiatrist" hit particularly hard.
I only knew Frontier Psychiatrist prior to this, and it’s still the standout. The rest of the tracks have fewer random cuts but still plenty of samples and great beats.
I had never heard of this band before, it was quite pleasant, might put in on at some later date when I want something chill
Man that snuck up on me. Was expecting something completely different (Fleet Foxes) so had it on in the background just so that I could say I'd listened to it. It caught my ear and so switched to headphones. Fantastic stuff, not quite a 5 yet but over time could become one for me.
Une aventure trippante Prefs: Since I Left You, Flight Tonight, Close To You, A Different Feeling, Electricity, Frontier Psychiatrist, Etoh, Summer Crane, Live At Dominoes Moins pref: Extra Kings
I read a bit about this album before listening to it and wasn't to impressed. However after listening to it, it just resonated with me a lot. I can't quite put my finger on it since I'm not a huge fan of this type of super sampled music (I got Endtroducing..... a while back and didn't like it) but this album seemed to avoid what I hate about the genre.
Mi ricordano un po' i daft punk e i portishead.
It was fine. It didn't do anything for me though.
Mmmmm. Maybe not as good as I remembered it, though there are some standout tracks.
This was fun! A little repetitive at times, but that's inherent to the form, I guess. A huge undertaking to make a catchy, danceable album using sound collages. Very cool, very impressive.
Great usage of sampling. So pretty.
Oh the early 00s. Smorgasbord of samples, and jumping all over the shop
Another genius takes the genre to its pinnacle. Creative use of obscure genres in a consistent manner. Tracks flow seamlessly from one to the next, matching the reoccurring samples and motifs that glue the whole album together. Many songs feel like extensions of the previous. But unlike other sampledelic artists like DJ Shadow, these tracks shift the focus from building an atmosphere in long sequences to short strings of ever-evolving club hits. There's much to digest in this hour-long program, but all of it worthwhile. You can really appreciate all the tracks. First several tracks have a bright summery feel to them (reminiscent of Saint Etienne) before shifting to a harder, funkier groove with "Flight Tonight." "A Different Feeling" is a deep cut that struck out to me, for constantly shifting its tempo and mood. This track really calms down the pacing building up to the Daft Punk-esque "Electricity." The calm "Tonight May Have..." gives off Charlie Brown vibes and reminds me of 2010s Youtube lofi with all the static and chill mood. And then suddenly "Pablo's Cruise" shifts to psychedelic weirdness, leading into the operatic vocal sample-heavy "Frontier Psychiatrist." Next 3 tracks lead us full circle on the bright summery theme, only this time more of the atmospheric low key feel of DJ Shadow. "Live At Dominoes" gives us one final hurrah in another Daft Punk-esque dance mix, which is kinda placed in a weird spot since the psychedelic "Extra Kings" immediately goes back to a mellow but dramatic finish.
Good
thumbs up
Funky, jazzy, disco, pop, trance, EDM all rolled into one.
00’er elektronisk, samplebaseret, soulet
Very cool album. I enjoy the Avalanches, they've got a really neat sample-based style. I know I've heard this before, along with another album or two from them. Not all that many standout tracks, but as a whole this is a fun one to return to. Varied in a good way. Favorite tracks: Since I Left You, Stay Another Season, Electricity, Live at Dominoes. Album art: Kind of inscrutable. I always knew it was water and waves, but I forget there's a couple boats of people in this picture too. Regardless, a painting as cover art is always welcome. 4/5
really enjoyed this, especially the titular track and of course Frontier Psychiatrist
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Since I Left You, Stay Another Season, Flight Tonight, Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life, Frontier Psychiatrist Cutting Edge: Radio Overall Notes: It may be cliche, but this is truly an experience of an album. The way in which these snippets of audio odds and ends weave in and out of the composition is a true musical marvel. The unique ebb and flow of this album is unlike anything I've ever heard before, it's like it puts you in its own little world, completely foreign yet familiar at the same time. I will say, some of the songs don't really get all the way there for me, but when it works it WORKS. Since I Left You and Frontier Psychiatrist being prime examples, the former beautifully familiar and the second absurdly foreign. I love both, especially when paired with their music videos. High 4.
brilliant plunderphonics
Love the flow and how the tracks seamlessly goes into each other. Etoh was a highlight.
Danstónlist mér að skapi. Mjög skemmtilegt.
Super enjoyable instrumentals. Reminds me of Daft Punk and Donuts a bit; perfect for a long drive or study sesh. 8/10.
“Get a drink! Have good time now! Welcome to paradise!” Since I left you is one of my favorite songs of all time, but I don’t think I listened to this in full until like 2010 or something and to my surprise, I had hear many of those tunes in clubs and parties. It’s quite a trip, the kind of sounds you would expect to hear at a rave a the time, not as cheerful as the title track but a great collection nevertheless. A bit tiresome nowadays but it was banging back in the day
Kannte die Band nicht bewusst, aber einige lieder schon, die sind ziemlich cool! klasses album, nicht fad
Super beat! Tolle Wechsel, auch von der Stimmung her. Wie viel ich dann doch von Ihnen kenn, bin ganz erstaunt. Das hör ich mir bestimmt wieder an! Frontier Psychiatrist!!! Yeahhh! That boy needs therapy! Da möcht ich gleich das Video sehen!
Uplifting, great morning music, or low key party playlist
Fun album, mostly instrumental samples, summery, some hip hop influence. Would listen to again.
Pretty dope sample album. Really enjoyed hearts in 3/4 time. Great transitions. Can't give it a 5 because some of the tracks ended up being too repetitive and sampled, like Frontier Psychiatrist. But overall definitely enjoyed it and would listen to it again.
8/10 really cool and unique
Very interesting but quite long and only a few songs that I really enjoyed. 7/10
This album takes me back to a happy time. Youth is a beautiful thing
Brings back memories of shared houses, Sydney Olympics and Rage on the TV.
Would it be fair to call this a musical quilt? Lots of little fabrics stitched together to make its own thing? Sometimes it seems really chaotic and crazy, but it also is delightful sometimes. I love it when you get just a moment of something recognizable that sits in an unfamiliar setting, like Debbie Reynolds singing "Tammy" over a 70s funk beat. It doesn't always work perfectly, but it's fun to see what happens.
Didn’t know them. Pretty nice.
Kellemes munka melletti zene, mintha egy jól kurált spotify listát hallgatnék. Sampleök, bevágott szövegek faszán illenek a zenébe. MF DOOM instrumental vibes, elbólogat rá az ember, néhol meg fasza house set vibes.
This sounds like a mix of disco and hip hop/electronic fusion. I really like it though. Never heard of this band before listening to the album. "Flight tonight" sounds like something Neo would listen to while hacking. 😂
Finísimo.
This album rocked
I had a great time listening to this whilst cooking on Friday night, so I'll use cooking as an organising metaphor for this. The Avalanches take the raw ingredients of beats and samples, and boil, mascerate, broil, steam and fry them up into an intoxicating culinary ride. Flavours bloom and burst from song to song; as with that other Michelin-starred sampler, DJ Shadow, these tracks feel human and organic in a way a lot of electronic music fails to muster. Perhaps because so much attention is paid to the musical palette, the mis-en-place and the order of cooking the ingredients to achieve maximum depth of flavour.
Still brilliant over twenty years later - perfect use of samples to create their own unique sound. Has moments throughout where it doesn’t quite work but doesn’t overshadow the skill involved
Oh go fuck a goat in the ear. I've just about torn my cock off on this one. I was the first trans character on Sesame Street. The Avalanches said I couldn't do it, but guess what? I did it. I did it.
Good. If this was a natural disaster, it'd be an avalanche.
You're a nut, you're crazy in the coconut. Exactly.
Cool vibes. Good background music. Pretty chill but not too much. Unique. I like it!
I had never listened to this album or any of the songs having never heard of the band. Generally, I don't listen to electronic music. It was an interesting mix of genres with an electronic background making it all flow together. Some of the ones with a more Motown sound were soothing to listen to in traffic, and I was genuinely surprised that I liked it.
Great, super-funky and groovy.
Really good album. Highly original but familiar sounding 4 🌟
Ahhh muy bueno, varios tonos pero está muy guapo
It was pretty good. I loved the coherency of the album and how tracks lead in together. I can definitely see how it shaped the next twenty years of sampling in music. Highlights: 1, 3, 10, 13, and 17.
Really cool how each song transitions into the next
Amazing flow as an album, feels like a great DJ set.
mó daora velho, uma musica gigante de uma hora com vários samples muito crazy.
A pretty strange album, not sure if I've listened to something like this before. But it was nice, I enjoyed it. A standout song for me was Frontier Psychiatrist.
Upbeat, creative, fun
En av 00 talets bästa skivor.
Still brilliant over twenty years later - perfect use of samples to create their own unique sound
Only track I recognised was the title track Since I left you. But rest are intreging and full of random sounds combled together which some how work for me.
Already listened
Preferred their most recent one but still ok
Mellow
Not very much substance for a dedicated listening but 100% a top-tier BGM listening experience. Flows beautifully as a whole piece as well as individual songs.
Mielenkiintoinen uusi tuttavuus.
This album was wack. Not really my style, but I do appreciate it for what it is, and that is art
enjoyed that - perfect cooking music i think. 4
This was a party!!
Fantástico! Uma grata surpresa a colagem de sonoridades e o arranjo do disco como um contínuo. Lembra a experiência de ouvir rádio
Breezy, fun and quite innovative. What's not to like?!
4.5 - very enjoyable
Nice instrumentals. Blockhead style
You're crazy as a coconut
Listened to this album to death when I was younger. It's exactly what I want out of an electronic/dance album. Saw them live once and they actually play with a full band live which is pretty cool.
Interesante propuesta a base de samples!
Great album, felt like I was having a party.
That boy needs therapy!
Tres bien pour ecouter en fond
Unique, fun.
Conocía Since I left you y 'la de that boy needs therapy' y fue una agradable sorpresa encontrarlas aquí. Definitiva adición a mi librería. Songs: Since I Left You, Frontier Psychiatrist, Live at Dominoes
Songs blend together, but accordingly don't stand out - nevertheless very catchy
Great hardrock-metal album. Fun to blast
I like a lot, though I think Endtroducing and Donuts are both better.
Much better background music!
Great beats and hooks, sounded a lot like a mashup of original music. I had heard Frontier Psychiatrist before, so glad to be exposed to the rest of Avalanches songs on this album. Highlights: Since I Left You Two Hearts in 3/4 Time Frontier Psychiatrist Live at Dominoes
Electricity was slow to start, but cool with harmonized vocals, and pumped up with phat bass line. This is an interesting album - I've never heard something so completely derived from sampling. I think I prefer the dance/club songs more than the singles. Favorite songs, Electricity and Live at Dominoes. Least favorite, 3/4 Time. Also if I were to listen to the album again I might skip over Frontier Psychiatrist.
Nice, kind of psychadelic.
Didn’t get all the way through but i liked it
Pretty cool use of samples and very sample heavy, multiple in most songs it seems.
I have listened to this classic before. Standouts are the title track and frontier psychiatrist for me but it is an easy listen the entire way through.
A classic and very great electronic jam, worth listening to again!
Très riche musicalement Homogène malgré la présence de différents styles Trés bon jeu de samples Excellentes transitions Une ambiance générale se dégage de l'album Seul bémol : aucun titre ne ressort l'album est un tout qui s'écoute d'une traite
Very vibey. Sounds like stoned on the couch music
Good melodic background music. Didn't really tune into it fully but enjoyed it - A good listen whilst working
I can dig this. Makes me want to drink weird cocktails- for some reason they're all the color of campari. This album transcends the genre of electronic music as I have consumed it during my life, ranging from piano laden jazzy lofi, to trance-ish tunes by the end of the record. The constant sampling is reminiscent of Bonobo and Nightmares on Wax.
Nice transitions
Vibe
A lot of feel good tracks. Would listen again.
Very interesting album, with a beautiful design, but I just don't care for the music
Is this the prequel to Everywhere at the End of Time by The Caretaker? Now there’s an album to put in this list. If you want a moving artistic sonic experience that’s one to find. If the author of this list was brave there’d be more like that on here. Not just Brit pop.
This one was definitely interesting. Very original DJ music. A little all over in terms of style, but quite inventive. As with a lot of DJ music, some of it gets repetitive, but this one much less so than a lot of others. I did feel myself grooving on a couple of tracks. It’s sort of good ambient music to have on while you’re doing something else. I’d say this is better than average DJ music, and while I don’t think I’ll ever reach for it again, it was worth the listening to. Another one I’d like to give a 3.5 to. I’m going 3, because even though I liked it, it didn’t really move me much. Just head-bobbing good.
This is indeed a classic and essential album. I may not be as big a fan of it as a lot of people are, but I can't deny how well executed everything is. The key is how all its different moving parts fit together. And I would say the less samples one recognizes the better and more immersive the experience. Or maybe knowing a lot of the source martial gives you a completely new outlook on the whole thing? I don't know. Key tracks: Since I Left You Frontier Psychiatrist
It was OK. Nothing too exciting though. Maybe a 2.5 - round up.
Enjoyable, experimental album that melted into the background. A few memorable tracks and moments (most notably Frontier Psychiatrist)
The sample work is obviously impressive, but the songs just aren't as much fun to listen to as they should be given the amount of work that went into everything. Lots of repetition. Frontier Psychiatrist is always fun though.
Weird album to describe. I'd never listen to it again by itself. It's interesting beats and samples, a bit all over and just makes for a audible assault in a way. However, all of it sounds like the perfect blend of "Indi shit" (to quote Donald Glover) to rap over, and would tell me about as far as something to listen to and experiment with. The album feels like it has potential to blend with something else and be greater than the sum of its parts
Ever since hearing Frontier Psychiatrist, I'd wanted to check out this album. Well, this was my opportunity. It is very repetitive, which usually annoys me, but the inventive use of the repetition intrigued me rather than annoyed me. Overall, I enjoyed listening to this album.
Three stars, still good
A sonic roller coaster.
felt as if i was a bad party that only played house music. Or waiting at the bar for my table to open up at some fancy-schmanzy restaurant. Or at the mall, shopping at American Eagle.
Good background music. Nothing to to get excited about. But would not go out of my way to listen to
Not my bag, but interesting
Two-thirds of this record is brilliant, featuring masterpieces of digital slicing and dicing in which the history of post-war pop music is recut and reconfigured into both brand new forms and eerily familiar shapes at the same time. There are real strokes of genius at work here (the stomping groove of "Electricity", the hypnotic vocal spiral of "Flight Tonight", and the sleek album closer "Extra Kings"). *But* the other third of this record is absolutely unlistenable, from the annoying "Two Hearts In 3/4 Time" to the quease-inducing (take some motion sickness pills before attempting to listen to "Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life"). Skip the gimmicky stuff on this record and what's left is a solid mini-LP that will take you to another dimension of sound.
Like it but lots of filler
mega fajny unikalny dzwiek ale zmarnowany potencjal w wielu miejscach na mocne bangerki
Decent. Not among the upper echelon of electronic music that i've heard, but it's solid.
Another late 90s early 2ks dance record with lots of samples of things - not songs just verbiage. It’s fine and I’m sure they have a nice little fan base.
Cool electronica find
Ok.
This is a fun little beats album. I can imagine this being on a radio station in GTA or something like that.
I’m of two minds here, because on the one hand, I do think this is one of the better electronic albums I’ve had to suffer thru for this challenge. But then on the other hand, I think it’s fair to acknowledge that these are two white Australian dudes sampling A LOT of music made primarily by people of color, and the vast majority of those albums are NOT represented on this list. Why does it become better, more worthy of inclusion on a “best of” list when it’s sampled by a couple of white dudes. They literally made nothing for this album. Every second belongs to someone else. I think it’s worth thinking about, especially because this list is sooooo white people heavy. On a lighter note this is another album where one of those songs was featured a lot on Vh1 clip shows from the early 2000s (Frontier Psychiatrist), so that scratches my nostalgia itch!!
Cool, chill grooves. Somewhat repetitious. Typical DJ dance mix fare.
This is good at points, and forgettable at others. It's almost background music at points, it's good but still not pushing to the front. I like the sampling and mixing of this and it does work for me to an extent, I'm not a fan of the more obvious samples on tracks as I don't feel much is really done with them to make something unique. The more out there stuff like 'Frontier Psychologist' grabs me moreso and I wish more of the album tried stuff like that. There are definitely better albums of this genre out there. Fav Track: Frontier Psychologist
Pretty good electronic/sample album but maybe a tad repetitive for me? Had some nice stand outs on it though. Favourite tracks: Radio, A Different Feeling, Electricity 3/5
Groovy greier man kan ha på i bakgrunnen på en fest. Et par seige spor på midten.
Not too bad! Pleasantly surprised!
What started as a repetitive electronic album grew on me as it went. I wouldn’t put it in the upper echelon of albums on this list, but it was an enjoyable listen and got stronger after a weak first half.
album tipo da dj, con mix e transizioni tra brani molto pulite, quasi come se fosse un unica ondata di musica!
A perfectly nice album that I never fully clicked with in the way others have. I prefer tue tracks that have some sort of hook (e.g., Frontier Psychiatrist) over the more soundscape-y ones.
Oh man what is this? In Radio, she keeps saying "sometimes you don't understand". Well, I don't understand most of this album. Frontier Psychiatrist was kinda funny though. Best song: Frontier Psychiatrist
Pretty average Nothing I found to be extraordinary 3/5 Favorite: radio
I liked this! Some songs I love and will revisit but as a whole I don’t know if I would go back for a whole relisten
3.25 - This is the kind of electronic music I prefer. Reminds me of Kid Koala.
Hard to place and hard to get a grip on, but there are some amazing sound landscapes in here.

favs: radio close to you a different feeling electricity frontier psychiatrist close to you (sun araw remix) radio (sinkane remix) a different feeling (carl craig’s paperclip people remix) thank you caroline (original demo tape) rating 2.7/5
So good grooves and interesting samples - but not enough.
After reading the Wikipedia summary for this album, I did not have high hopes for anything more than another entry in the "Millennial Hipster Nightclub Music" chronicles. Fortunately, the music was more attention-grabbing than I anticipated.
Fun, light, airy, jazzy & definitely catchy. Yet, it all sounds about the same. It kinda sounds like a weird robot dinner party. The weird fake scratchy old record sound to the start & stop qwik edits. The edits reminds me of MF DOOM. I liked it more than I thought I would but gets annoying at times. Music Collage 3
This is actually a fun pot-pourri of several danceable retro music styles put together in a creative way.
Bought this when it first came out and liked it have never really listened much since. Still sounds OK but never quite settles down in to what it wants to be.
Decent.
A good album to listen, nothing precisely remarkable.
Wel lachen, 3.5
Title track and first song was really fun and engaging - also was my favourite song on the album. The constant use of samples and their variety reminded me a bit of a beat tape which I enjoy in general. I previously only knew them from their collab with blood orange that I really enjoyed and it was the first project from them, that i gave a chance to. Though the album dragged for me a bit in the end and only 3 songs stuck with me, ill listen again and think it was fun.
Chaotic good, beach party edition. Following these guys to afters.
this is the avalanches? i thought the avalanches were something different. this is ok.
Really really good But Its about 20 mins too long. Its far far too long and it kinda feels it at times. But its all quite good The singles are superb
As I have noted in past reviews of similar albums, I do enjoy a skilled sample artist. The Avalanches are top notch and their debut is a really nice, chill representation of the genre. The duo produced a free flowing, single run record that makes for great background for pretty much any activity. The alum starts a bit slow but picks up as it goes, peaking at the middle with "A Different Feeling" and "Electricity." They really flex their "cut" muscles with "Frontier Psychiatrist." Been listening to these guys for a bit but did not know about them upon this records release. Solid work form a couple Dingo DJs...3.37 stars.
Odd to class a sampling band as being a Pioneer in 2000 but the avalanches where/are
At the beginning an interesting album. But the further you go, the more identical every song becomes. Nice ideas but to much repetition.
Super fun overall. Mostly hits some misses. I just love Aussie artists - so talented.
I like it more than most turn-of-the-millennium electronic music. Still, I find it hard to stay engaged through the whole album.
cool
Unremarkable but pleasant
I liked this album. It reminded me of TV Girl with the random samples and noises mixed in. I guess I should say that TV Girl reminds me of The Avalanches!
Not bad.
A very interesting album not something i would choose to buy but indeed i did enjoy.
I liked it well enough.
Decent dance music, it was pleasant all the way through but nothing particularly stands out. I've enjoyed plunderphonics songs before, it seems like an album worth of plunderphonics is just not for me.
I actually quite enjoyed some of this until I started not to
3/5. Not bad at all, but I'll never come back. This is an odd album. It's quite a pleasant listen, both background and active, but it feels like it's going nowhere all the time. I liked a majority of the songs, but couldn't recall anything specific about any one song after listening. So many of these songs feel like they should be an interlude or lead-in to another, meatier song, but that song never comes on. You're just always waiting for that substance to appear most of the time. The only song that has that substance is perhaps "Frontier Psychiatrist," and only for a portion of it. But there's so much good bits and pieces sheathed within the songs. They just rarely extend outside of fractions of the whole song.
