Reviews (page 5 of 14)

Cover art = 10* Album so influential

love it

What is a timeless album? I don’t know but this about as close as you can get.

Wonderful album. Runs the full spectrum of bliss and beauty to horror and strangeness and hits everything in between. It is truly artistic statement.

Ne može ništa osim pet

I had this at the age of about 21 as part of the Peel Slowly and See boxset. It's still amazing, a gritty backlash against the staid pop that dominated airwaves in the 1960s.

This is one of my all time favourite records. Lou Reed truly penned some tragically beautiful songs that will last for ages.

Has to be a 5 BUT with major qualifications. This album is nowhere near the Velvet Underground’s best. The extremely rough production is simultaneously this album’s greatest strength and its weakness. The songs themselves definitely hit the mark, even if time has somewhat blunted their edge. You get the impression on tracks like the straightforward chugging rocker “Run Run Run” that Lou Reed is intentionally trying to sabotage any semblance of formality in their melodies - and that I guess is the appeal of this record. But here’s the other thing, this album came out in 1966!! That’s utterly astonishing. There are sounds on this record committed to vinyl about 20 years before they had any right to be. As far as influential albums go, there are few which can measure up to this. Ramones, My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain and the Fall all trace their heritage back to here. It changed the landscape in such a way that, regardless of any technical shortcomings on this record, it is both aesthetically and sonically one of the most important albums ever.

This is as great as everyone says. I remember when I was a kid looking up to lists of the GOAT albums, this was the first that I seriously enjoyed. It started on a path of classic rock and I have fond memories of it.

The Velvet Underground & Nico was more artsy than I expected however considering it was recorded during an Andy Warhol tour things started to line up. Themes throughout, are quite avant-garde and for the time would have been somewhat confronting, this reflects the limited number of copies that were sold on it's original release. However it's easy to see that it has been very influential to many future bands and releases in the vein of alternative, rock, punk, goth & indie. Best: Sunday Morning Worst: European Son 4.5 Stars

Always

Fantastic album - so atmospheric and lyrical.

Phenomenal. It's just amazing. So much has been said about this album that I couldn't possibly add anything remotely new. It's just great. One of the most important albums ever made and just a treasure to listen to.

Ideal album for easy morning.

More influential than "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and you know I'm right!

Oh I did NOT like this when I first heard it. I'd seen an Andy Warhol documentary which included a bit of the famous VU performance at the Factory that the police interrupted, and that looked great, so when VU and Nico turned out to... well, not be like that, I was quite let down. (Conversely White Light White Heat was much more like what I was expecting.) It took a while but I now realise it is cursed with one of the worst stereo mixes of the mid-60s. It's a fantastic album, but it *must* be heard in mono.

Lol har visst alltid trodd at da stoppa etter All tomorrow's parties, så detta blei første gang eg hørte meir enn da. Men bra albi

Another classic VU album (first 4 are 5 stars)

Best album cover of all time. Also legendary album with some of my favorite velvet underground songs.

Wierd since I've been listening to a lot of Nico lately.

Objectively genius? The fact that this was made 55 years ago is a glitch in the matrix. Petition to investigate whether it was in fact made by the ghosts of Lou Reed, David Bowie, Mozart and God gone back in time from 2077 in a DeLorean so that 80% of current music it ultimately influenced could be a thing

Classic alternative rock is classic. This was the first alternative album. Much props. Also, how many covers did this album spawn?

incredible album, especially good to hear those tracks sequenced again

Með betri plötum. Fengi kannski 9,5. Mjög ljúf hlustunar. Gamall góður vinur einhvernvegin.

Awesome record. Love the moodiness and psychedelic guitar riffs.

This was absolutely fantastic. I have no idea why I've never listened to The Velvet Underground before. My mistake, because they were really fantastic. I also tend to love 1960s and 1970s era rock, so I was destined to love it.

*In Donkey Kong 64 voice* Ohhhh, banana!

Lou Reed was a brilliant songwriter

Excelente!

Well well well... this one almost makes too much sense, perhaps as an atonement for yesterday's MGMT pick. The thing is, that when I first got it, I was disappointed, I only liked I'm Waiting for My Man and Heroin. Yet I knew there was something there... and kept with it, and it's grown and grown on me. And as it's one of my favorite covers, I probably own at least six copies on vinyl (even having given away two copies in the past couple of years, trying to get perfect covers as well. 10/10

I Love this album.

One of the most crucial albums you must hear before you die. 1967 really was a loaded year

Loved it perfect for a Sunday morning, some lyrics sounded a little misogynistic though.

💛💛💛

God level brilliance

Great album. Very experimental sound with use of heavy distortion, interruption and varied pace. Various styles/delivery: psychedelic, r/b, rock. Good songwriting to understated vocals esp heroin/femme fatale. Heroin is definitely the standout track which I hadn’t heard before; clear representation of his experience through building chaos and clamor. Solid top to bottom. Femme fetal, waiting for the man, heroin, there she goes again 4.6

This is classic Velvet Underground that became so influential in so many ways, Bowie, Glam Rock, Punk and Post Punk all inluenced by Warhols Factory house band, who would have thought it! some great songs here. My Favourites are "Sunday Morning" "All Tomorrows Parties" & "Venus in Furs" Rightfully in the list here.

Of course it's an all time classic!

Incredible.

Tied for the best VU album ever (with the self-titled album). Gritty. Reminds me of NYC.

De drugsjunk bij de voordeur... Gezellig op zondagochtend...!

Very influential album and great songs.

What's the opposite of defecating in a zorb and then having it hit you in the face over and over as you run down a hill?

Imagine being one of those reviewers that painstakingly deconstructs every song and writes 15 paragraphs like they're auditioning for Q Magazine, when you can sum some albums up in one emoji. 🍌

Love this album, always have. Not much else to say, I'm sure there's a 4-hour long documentary on Youtube that analyzes every single note of every song on this album.

Not my first time of listening but it's been a year or so, what hasn't been said about this album already isn't really worth saying, i wasn't born when this album was released but you can hear it resonating down the decades, seeping into the subconscious to this day and forever. Timeless.

Legendary

I love this album long before this project. Lou Reed's voice has such swagger and sweetness. And then Nico, sounding so warm yet aloof. Every single song does what it was intended to do, even if I don't know what exactly that was. I really got into Venus In Furs for the first time, digging the strings. I Am Your Mirror is one of my all-time favorite songs, but it hit me differently this time around. It sent me into reflecting about how that's how I can only hope to be that for the people I love.

So happy to hear this!!! It was fortuitous that it was delivered on a Sunday morning!

Fucking awesome

sunday morning is one of my favorite classic rock/alternative songs. it's so simple, but emotionally complex and almost entrancing. im waiting for the man is a catchy presumably queer, love song with an awesome riff. even though i don't like nico at all as a person, she is a beautiful singer on femme fatale. venus in furs is an interesting song musically and lyrically, but it has a unique charm run run run remains me of bob dylan and other late 50s/early 60s rock and alternative groups. sadly, i have to say it's my least favorite, i come to lou reed for lyrical content, and this feels mostly instrumental and lyrically hollow. all tomorrow's parties is just- kinda bland. nothing really notable about it if i can remember. heroin is a heartbreakingly perfectly ode to the drug and lou's addictions throughout his life. it slowly builds to an incredible conclusion and is probably the best track on the latter half of the album. there she goes again is a good track. however i do feel like it's mostly filler. i'll be your mirror is absolutely perfect. it's one of the best alternative love songs ever written, and i plan to play it at my wedding if i ever get married. the black angel's death song is a sweeping almost horror song, which is almost definitely the inspiration for the halloween theme. overall, a 4.75/5. genuinely one of the most influential albums of all time, even if some of the tracks aren't up my alley.

Almost went with the 4 cause Venus in Furs, but I convinced myself in the end.

Iconic.

Lou Reed. No hace falta decir más.

5 star album. Hated it the first time I listened to it in high school. Kinda liked it a few years later. \"Get it\" now that I'm in my late 20s

Bárbaro

I have always loved this album for all of its flaws and its genius

banana

Absolutely PERFECT album. Genuinely one of the greatest achievements in rock, and music in general. One of my favorites!!!

First VU I ever bought after they were covered and name dropped by R.E.M. on Dead Letter Office (which was actually the first R.E.M. album I ever purchased). 16 year old me didn't completely get it but it sure grew on me. An all time classic by a band whose entire studio catalog is comprised of nothing but classics (I can pretend Squeeze doesn't exist, try and stop me)

I loved this album!!

An absolute beauty!

Another work of genius.

One of my favourite albums

Nothing but love & respect for Lou Reed & the gang

Love this, really acted as the vague portmanteau for rock and defined the proto-punk genre, brought rock backs to its roots

Yes So gentle, no over singing in this one Sound of New York

Undeniably one of the most important and influential albums of the last century. Perfection.

Great album definitely understand why so highly regarded.

Of course I knew The Velvet Underground by name, I know the famous banana image and I've definitely heard a couple of the songs without ever knowing it's by them (especially the opening song Sunday Morning). Yet, for some reason I was never interested in them and my expectations were low. I really don't know why though, as this album is just really good. The depth and versatility really caught me by surprise and I can easily imagine this album being as hugely influential as it ended up being. Saved this album and will re-listen. I do have one criticism: I really could have done without the final six minutes of the album.

so happy this one came up

Listened to my vinyl copy. Sounds kinda harsh. Bad surface noise, especially on Heroin (side 2, track 1).

Mmmmmmmmm

Y’know it is what it is

Nico <3 Lou Reed <3 John Cale <3 Moe Tucker <3 Sterling Morrison <3. Perfect in its naivete, purity, experimentalism, tonal painting. Just perfect. The world of sound would be a lesser place without the existence of this album.

Elements of psychedelic and pre-punk. Clearly influential and for good reason. Heroin, Sunday morning, Femme Fatale <3

I was already very familiar with this album and love it. Great to revisit - it’s been quite a while since I listened to it all the way through.

It's one of the most perfect albums ever. There isn't a bum note. No song that isn't classic. It's astonishing that it is a debut record.

I love this album. Heroin is a banger and a half.

Just a great album

Great album, deserving of the hype.

A very strange album which can feel both musically great while being uncomfortable to listen to - as the songs appear intended to be.

Way cooler than I thought

Super classic.

I listened to the album after several years and I enjoyed it! My favorite song is Heroin and Venus in Furs. The last song is too experimental for my taste.

8.5-9/10 FT: Venus in furs

Absolute Classic

ICONIC. Not my first time to listen to this and i looped it a few times now.

awesome stuff and an iconic cover (top 5 all time for me). I don’t really know what Nico was doing but oh well I guess

A classic, deservedly so. If “Waiting for the Man” doesn’t get you to four stars, what will?

Favourite Songs: Venus In Furs Heroin European Son

Bra!

There is something undeniably cool about this album. It makes you want to bob your head and dance about. Maybe take a walk and take in the harsh beauty of life. High 4.

Everything about this album is icons from the cover to the track list that includes some of their better known tracks, from the airiness of Sunday Morning to the intensity of Venus in Furs. A classic.

I’ve been liking this more every listen. I’m more tapped into its frequency now, although I still think it loses its way in the middle third. Sunday morning is still sublime

I love this one especially Sunday Morning and Venus In Furs

Art rock that is cool just to be cool, but love some of these songs regardless.

Insert quote here about how influential this album was.

I’ll be your mirror is obviously a special song, rest of album just so

An all time great on here and the rest of the album is pretty strong

Bellissime canzoni

Given how much I disliked the Nico album, I was really worried about listening to this one. I actually did end up thinking it was pretty good though. I don't know that it's great music, but it's definitely super interesting and groundbreaking music.

Listened to this once many years ago and found it to be just okay. Upon revisiting, I found myself appreciating this a whole lot more. I see the hype now.

A tour de force

timeless melodies, too pretty for what they are talking about

nanner

A song about heroin? I thought this was a rock album, not jazz!

4/5 The velvet underground doesn’t get enough credit for what they did for hard and alternative rock. This music is like if NIN was making music 30 years earlier. The guitars sound horrible but they’re raw.

Needed more Nico :/

Of course I have heard of TVU and knew this album cover. I am familiar with Lou Reed and Andy Warhol. Despite all of that, I had never listened to one of their albums. For some reason, I had expected noise and chaos. I was very wrong. This album was full of very melodic and rhythmic songs. The topics are timeless and very much in your face, but in a pleasant way. Taking into account this album was released in 1967 - the same year The Stones were on Ed Sullivan. Elvis married Priscilla, The Beatles drop Sgt. Pepper’s, Jimi Hendrix experience is released, Pink Floyd release their debut, and a Monkee met a Beatle……it’s no wonder this album was commercially overlooked. I don’t mind it at all. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by it.

I LOVE THE COVER ART. But, still, it is a bit too old for my liking. I would rather listen to something a bit more upbeat. There were times where you could only listen a barrage of noises (European son) but there were also other times were the music was so good I'd keep on listening to them forever. But I don't know to what extent my opinion is influenced. You see, people tend to exaggerate the greatness of an album (or any aspect of life) if they fail to truly understand it. This album, in my view, is really impressive, even though I know that I'm a bit too biased by this rule. But I do like not understanding anything; you cannot be wrong about something you don't understand, being protected by ignorance.

The song Heroin is........🪷

gotta pay the 1 star nico toll!

couple famous songs and the other ones were different to what im used to listen so i really liked it!

A mostly pleasant experience. There were a few songs in the back half I have never gotten around to listening too. Some new favourites but a couple that were so hard to sit through as well. Could have dialled back the experimentalism a tad here and there.

I knew most of the songs, often from cover versions, but I'd never listened to the album so this was good. It really is astonishing in the context of the other things being released at the time. Completely unique.

I love the album and I don't know why. It's so trippy. I don't know if they were that great or if drugs help them along but it worked.

Listening session: may 29th, while going for a walk Listened to before: listened to a few songs before Thoughts: one of the most iconic album covers ever in my opinion, and the music is interesting and experimental so I can see why this is influential Favourite tracks: Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale & I’ll Be Your Mirror

klasika 4

Theres 60s sound, but also feels modern.

I like it. I don't love it. Bits of it are truly great - Sunday Morning, Venus in Furs, Waiting For My Man. It's a bit too ramshackle to get closer to my heart. The artwork is obviously incredible.

There are some songs I adore on this album and some I struggle to get through. 3.5

I love most of the more avant-gardy songs in this (Venus In Furs, All Tomorrow's Parties, The Black Angel's Death Song), EXCEPT European Son. It feels like a missed opportunity.

Good, but I couldn't shake the feeling that it sounds dated and that I "should" enjoy it more. Actively unpleasant at times, but kind of the point of the art message

Very creative and appealing 60s sound but not formulaic. Interesting arrangements and experimental while maintaining musicality.

This was thrilling and dark and of the era. I think Winston from new girl secretly bumps this. Sadly Heroin was my fav.

I’ve always wanted to love this album because I appreciate what it led to… but instead I’ve always just really liked it. It has a few phenomenal songs (Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale, Heroin), but most the album is just good. Nothing extraordinary. I understand it was revolutionary, but the things that were once revolutionary are normal now. So they have no effect on me.

I think the banana album is titanically important on a historical level, but it’s probably a little overrated as an actual listening experience. That’s not to say it’s bad—Lou Reed’s songwriting talents are on display, and the band makes effective use of Nico’s weird warbly voice. The experimental stuff is not as interesting as some insist it is, but this is an essential album nonetheless.

Hard to overstate how influential this album was to the indie/underground scene. The Nico tracks are pretty underwhelming but everything else holds up super well.

I'm not going with all the hype about this album and all the influence it had on future genres. I just straight up like it.

Thanks to this list I've learned that 80% of the time, I really hate the Velvet Underground and especially Lou Reed solo. But like 10-20% of the time, they really hit a note. And most of Lou Reed's career 20% good is on this album, with songs like Waiting for the Man and masterpieces Heroin and Venus in Furs. Femme Fatale is decent. Run Run Run is a great track as well. All Tomorrows Parties another banger. Reed would probably hate this, but tracks like that, Heroin and Venus in Furs definitely sit on my acid rock play list. A lot of the other tracks are forgettable, just OK, but there aren't too many on this album that scream of "too much drugs" rather than "just the right amount of drugs." And no Lou Reed descending into goofiness. It's not perfect, but definitely Reed's best. 4/5

This is an interesting album. Not polished, often weird, but definitely worth listening to

It's funny that an album where the two singers can't sing at all still sounds good. The Velvet Underground creates a special vibe; it's like Bob Dylan on a trip. While I don't think it offers any musical revelation, it serves as a documentary of its time.

On the more alternative albums. Some solid stuff.

Odd but groovy

Noisey and out of tune in parts but moorish and enjoyable. Makes amateur sound fun and accessible while also being wildly different for the time. I rate it

Lou's voice is so gentle and raw Heroin is a great track for that.

Cool art for cool music. Likes: Sunday Morning; I’m Waiting For The Man; Femme Fatale; Heroin; I’ll Be Your Mirror

Bäst är Sunday morning, I'm waiting for the man, Heroine och There she goes again.

MY FAVS: - Sunday Morning - Femme Fatale - Venus in Furs

Easy to see why this album had the trajectory it did - deeply ahead of its time and probably too raw/gritty for 60s audiences at the time. But of course as music started to bend that way, this is looked upon as a founder of Grunge, Indie, and Punk. Great album.

anzos jacket

Classic album cover, classic songs. Nico and Lou Reed do a great job of setting up a crazy experience. A lot of drugs make for some crazy songs. Heroin is an amazing trip of someone who knows what it is like to be on major drugs. 7.9/10 Top song Run Run Run

everyone who rated this 1 star either hates fun and is miserable or just has shit music taste

1001 albums to hear before you hear the black angels death song 81# Context matters. A lot. And this album put in context, it's one of the most creative, even though Pet sounds we're already there, or Revolver. It's part of that revolution, for a weirder sound. For the ears of today, I don't think this stands with the aforementioned albums. (Not comparable at all) Midway through I started to get it and be in the vibe. This is so dreamy and trip inducing, the repetitions and the uncanny guitar solos..? Awesome

Felt like I was on the verge of a panic attack in parts icl

Heroin - banger

My parents had already introduced me to this album but if never listened to it fully. Sunday morning reminds me of my childhood. I rlly like I'm waiting for the man, I don't know I see like a wes anderson scene sequence with this song. Something to do with kitchens. Femme fatale reminds me of myself. Id bake while listening to this. It's kind of melancholy. Venus in Furs- id put that in a witch movie. Run run run reminds me of the scene with peewee and the bikers in his big adventure. I don't know why it does. There she goes is definitely one of my favorites. I kinda zoned out listening to the rest as I was doing my art.

3.5 Bits and pieces mas na generalidade apreciei. As guitarras para mim, salvaram a experiência.

I’ll be throwing this album on some more. It’s super chill and every track is at least good with some stand outs as well. 8/10

Wish it didn’t have any Nico songs

7/10… art rock / proto punk / *1967

Such an interesting band. Broke boundaries. Also, not always the easiest listen. I really like this album but I understand why it grates on some people. I think that’s partly the point. Anyway - like it or not, you have a lot to thank this album for.

Never listened to the whole album of theirs before yet finally!

I’ve never listened to this. I really enjoyed it. You can tell how influential it has been.

This is such an iconic album! Even just the cover art alone has to be one of the most recognizable in all of music. But the music itself also holds up so well. It's not perfect at every moment and definitely could have been cut down at times (European Son), but it has so many classic songs of this era that inspired so much of rock, pop, and alternative music. Amazing album! Top Songs: Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale, Venus in Furs, All Tomorrow's Parties, I'll Be Your Mirror

I have 5 Velvet Underground songs liked on Spotify with only 1 song from this album - "I'll Be Your Mirror". I don't remember why or how I found that 1 song. So I'm definitely curious to hear the rest of this. Funny, I'm listening to "Sunday Morning" on a Sunday morning - definitely fits the vibe. Was surprised how some of these songs sound like English folk style - similar to Fairport Convention - not exactly but seems to be operating in a similar space. Seems moreso on the songs Nico is singing. Lou Reed definitely likes singing about heroin - "I'm Waiting For The Man", "Heroin" "European Son" was fun for it's long extended jam, I can see how this inspired lots of other bands over time. Keep in mind this was 1967. After listening to this 3 times I ended up liking 9 songs (8 new to me) - only ones that did not grab me are "There She Goes Again" and "The Black Angel's Death Song". I'm glad I took the time to listen through this. I have feeling I'm going to spot lots of influences on other bands I like as I listen to my playlists over time. I can already tell they've influenced bands I've liked for a long time like The Strokes, Spoon, Wilco, Radiohead, REM, U2 and I'm sure many others. Liked songs on Spotify: 9/11 Rating: 4/5

EXCELLENT 4+/5

Interesting stuff. Another good work mix.

It was a great album! Rock legends

All aboard the pretentiousness express. I'm loving my train metaphors lately. Reminds me of that time a guy stepped onto the train in Scotland midday with a Pediatrics textbook and a can of Budweiser. Hey, if I'm gonnae pass med school I at least have to drink weak bear AND study on my way to the Partick Thistle match. Weak beer. Listen to me. Obviously any beer would kill me like elephant tranqs hitting a gerbil. What are we doing here? Oh yeah, cool guy album. I was wrong about this record. I mean I never heard it, but my preconception was wrong. This thing has crazy strings, cool melodies and doesn't overstay it's welcome. It's pure inspiration despite the overblown pop art guy. Ahhh he's alright too. What the hell. Everybody gets praise today. 4 HIGHLIGHTS: Bananagrams is fun

What fun! Very different and unique but in a fun way - i like the velvet underground hope to listen to more of their albums

Me ha encantado!! Mis favoritas: Sunday morning There she goes again I’ll be your mirror ⭐️

ive already listened to this

Good album if you're into that kind of thing! It's got a couple real stand-out tracks but in general, it was pretty good.

I've heard this album and a lot about it many times now. It's probably one of the most recognizable album covers in the world. I think this album is very good and important to music history and also not my favorite! It's just not my typical style and for that it will be a 4 and no more. I get it, I don't think it's BAD but it's just not for me. That's okay.

I didn’t know this was a collab with Nico. Iconic album

Venus in Furs and Heroin sure are something. (European Son sure is something too, in another way…) With this The Velvet Underground becomes the artist/band with the biggest discrepancy between my highest (four stars for this) and lowest (one star for White Light / White Heat) rating for their albums, with the latter being also my only one star given nearly 600 albums in. Maybe I need to revisit it.

Pretty cool stuff. Last track made me dizzy. Feels so classic - but I also get why it wasnt well received at first. Glad I finally got to see what this one was about. Great record to do mall laps with.

I very much enjoyed this debut album from The Velvet Underground! I’ve heard many of these songs individually but never as a collective so that was fun. The themes and vibes of the album are very indicative of the time in which it was produced. Overall, I had a great time listening to this alt/experimental rock album and it’s one I would listen to again in the future!

Damn fine album!

I can definitely see why this was so influential, but I much prefer their later work.

A very Mongolia typa beat and very calming

Finally listened to this want to spend more time with it but interesting that it was released in 67!

I haven’t done this one yet? If you know any Velvet Underground albums, it’s probably this one. Its he quintessential VU record. It’s not as spicy as White Light / White Heat will be, but it’s a little more interesting than the third, self titled, record.

Favorite songs: Sunday Morning, I'm Waiting for the Man, Femme Fatale, Run Run Run, All Tomorrow's Parties, There She Goes Again, I'll Be Your Mirror

I liked this. Obviously a significant album and my first time listening to the whole thing, as opposed to individual tracks.

So tempted to give it 5 stars but Herikn just didn’t do it for me and really I think I love the covers that others have done of these songs more but definitely worth 4 stars. Standouts were "I'm Waiting for the Man“, "Run Run Run" and "There She Goes Again”

Good album, 4 stars

I am slowly realising that I am, in fact, a Nico fan.

It's one of many great albums released in the legendary year of 1967. Somehow, "The Velvet Underground & Nico" stood out even in a sea of innovative classics. In many cases, an album that was considered controversial at the time of its release later becomes a classic (e.g. most '80s metal). "The Velvet Underground & Nico" is one of those albums. Imagine hearing "Sunday Morning" on release day; it must've been bewildering. 4 stars for "The Velvet Underground & Nico".

I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. This is really good. Sunday Morning is beautiful, it has a gorgeous melody. I'm not the biggest fan of spoken word, but it kind of works on this record. The abrasive, screeching parts weren't pleasant to listen to, though.

Speciaal, heel tof

I'm a Velvet Underground fan, but theres no need for the final track on this album, NO NEED.

I wasn't that aware of the full album but I really enjoyed most of the tracks, apart from a couple of experimental ones. Pleasantly surprised.

I dig. It's giving me Dylan vibes.

while i find this album a bit uneven there are some real highlights on here that i would come back fot again and again. Its is also an abaolute signpost album for punk even though theor minumalist ‘i’m just here to make sure the band stays in time aand that’s it’ went full maga (but that’s beside the music).

Love this

boundary pushing to say the least very brave for its time, filled with all kinds of theme that were considered taboo back in 1967 can be a tough listen with its harsh sound and abstract song structures but there's a song or two that can be enjoyed casually

Damn, I think they out-kinked the Kinks with that Venus in Furs song. I forgot to include The Velvet Underground when I was listing off proto-punk bands before, but they might be even more influential since I think they came before a lot of the others and had more of the taboo anti-society subject matter in their songs.

don’t know why but I never used to think as highly of this record as many others. On first listen something didn’t ‘click’ with me and I was just left feeling unsatisfied due to the hype of the record. I relistened again today and found much more enjoyment out a lot of it. Still some tracks I’m not too keen on (the closer is just not my thing), but overall a great record

This album sums up what the Velvet Underground is. Being the absolute opposite to the mainstream rock acts at the time. The sound of this album, has trickled through the alternative rock to Sonic Youth to Arctic Monkeys. It's influence on the musical world can't be denied.

Really good and i don’t even like the VU

- As explained in a previous review, I'm boycotting them because (racist) Lou Reed assaulted women, and Nico is a total racist, too. - I did listen to this album a lot before I learned what terrible people so many famous musicians are. - There are a lot of great songs with unforgettable melodies and moody lyrics, which I appreciate. - I also really like that there are two distinct singers - and to have a woman's voice that is so low is pretty rare and interesting. - I like the jangliness of the guitar, but I don't love its tone, which is so thin. - I enjoy the random instrumentation (like the glock, etc.) and the bass throughout. - But like all Velvet Underground albums, there are songs that I tend to skip, e.g., Run Run Run and the final two songs, so I find it goes on too long.

Crazy how big and attention drawing this album is, while arguably not the best Velvet Underground album. To me, the noise elements are hard to mix with songs that are so sweetly soft like a Sunday Morning or a I’ll Be Your Mirror. Even so, they represent a type of purity in the exploration of the musical landscape by visionaries like John Cale and Lou Reed. Nico is used wonderfully across the album, adding a softer hardness to the album. Singers with unique voices magnified in a way that doesn’t feel like it creates a division between them and the music is a real joy. Not just a moment in time, this album remains the moment till this day. Faves: Heroin, Sunday Morning, I’ll Be Your Mirror, There She Goes Again, Femme Fatale

I mean it's a classic for a reason. My dad tried to put me onto this a couple times, and like I got what he was saying about it but it didn't really click with me. And to tell the truth I'm still not sure it clicked with me, but I really liked it. I don't think it's perfect, but there's a ton to love here. Favorites: I'm Waiting for the Man, Run Run Run, European Son

Some excellent songs, but some parts too avant garde for me

There is a good biography on spotify. Didn’t know the band. Did know the sound of Lou Reed on guitar.

Liked it. It had a vibe.

VELVET UNDEGROUNDS IS AMAZINNGGGGGGGGGGGGG so was this album :D

Gran disco.

This record thrives most when it leans into its more atmospheric side. Listening to this from front to back truly showed its rare and timeless quality, and while the mid-album stretch can feel a bit repetitive at times, the high points are nothing short of legendary. An essential listen. Favorite/s: Sunday Morning, Heroin Least favorite/s: Run Run Run

I've heard this one before - I liked it back in college but I really just love Sunday Morning. Definitely influential!

This is an album that is more important than it is good. I did like it, but mostly, I appreciated it. It sounds radical for 1967, musically, lyrically, and stylistically. Early psychedelia, transgressive, lo-fi. And with an iconic album cover. I’m also not generally crazy about Nico, though I think she works fairly well here.

I listened to like half of it and it was good I’ve been meaning to

Feeling generous, so rounding up!

I find a lot of this to be fairly straightforward pop, with Lou’s songwriting aspirations to be a Brill Building staff writer like Carole King and Neil Sedaka (R.I.P. Neil…) all over it. Sunday Morning is one of Elizabeth’s all-time fave tracks. I believe White Light/White Heat, their second album to be much more discordant. The album we played a lot in George Pohanka’s basement was their 4th, Loaded, which didn’t have Nico or John Cale and was very much a pop album with “hits” Sweet Jane and Rock and Roll. Try those tracks on Loaded and then try them on Lou’s live album Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal (it also has Heroin). 4.5 rounded down — I quite like it but it’s not 5-worthy.

Would have been a 3 if European son lasted much longer.

It's tricky to rate albums like this. On one hand, it's an undeniably influential work; on the other, I don't really feel like listening to it a second time. I'll give it a 4 anyway, for its merits—I don't want to just average it out.

Really held up over the years

It's not quite five stars for me, because there are plenty of tracks that I *like*, but none that I *love*. I hadn't listened to this in years and it was fun rediscovering some of the lesser known tracks.

Excellent album - felt the second half was a little weaker than the first 5 or 6 but really good

It's good, it's important, but I fluctuate on how enjoyable it is to listen to.

Pretty groovy -- great sound for the late 60s. Pretty influential.

No. 372/1001 Sunday Morning 4/5 I'm Watiting For The Man 4/5 Femme Fatale 5/5 Venus In Furs 4/5 (2x) Run Run Run 3/5 All Tomorrow's Parties 4/5 (2x) Heroin 4/5 (2x) There She Goes Again 4/5 I'll Be Your Mirror 4/5 The Black Angel's Death Song 3/5 European Son 2/5 (2x) Average: 3,67 Enjoyed the start way better than I expected. Femme Fatale is my personal favorite. European Son was too experimental for me.

A sequência inicial com Sunday Morning, I'm Waiting for the man, Femme Fatale e Venus in Furs é fantástica! 4,25/5.

It was good, groundbreaking. First half especially was really high quality. Really not sure about the second half but I guess it wasn't boring.

Very good. Kinda creepy.

Cool album. Liked it. Standout songs: Sunday Morning Venus in Furs Ill be your mirror

Is it just me or did Nico kill the vibe Like I'm not sexist I just don't like the sound of Nazis

Very nice. I do prefer the two albums that came after this one but this is still a really awesome album. Rides the perfect balance between comforting accessibility and weird experimentation. Must-listen #301.

Good one

I LOVE HEROIN

2 liked

Not the greatest album of all time as some say, however there are some great tracks on it and it has clearly a massive influence. Andy Warhol may be a hack artist but his band is pretty good.

A lot of this was great to listen to. There were some sounds that popped up throughout that were difficult to listen to.

yes it was like velvet.

1967? Sounds totally post-punk. Straightforward in a profound way. Listen to the end of Waiting For The Man--perfectly (I imagine) captures the driving desperation of a junkie's need. BTW just learned Lou graduated cum laude in English from Syracuse. These songs hit as many corners as they can and then some. I've heard this all before, but now I'm really listening and am entranced.

strong album

When is great, it's really great. There's some classic songs on here that have stood the test of time. The fuzzed out jams are a bit much to have on record and I don't love Nico's vocals. But I think this would have been amazing to see and hear back in the day.

Day 185 Such an influential record and ahead of its time. Really interesting listen. Highlights Sunday Morning I’m waiting for the Man All tomorrows parties

Riktigt riktigt bra!

Their sound seems so unique. It is so innovative and smart. Every song has its own sound and is nailed perfectly.

Wassup Nico. I like her songs the best, her voice is one of a kind. I'll Be Your Mirror was probably my favorite. Overall I enjoyed listening to this and checking another white whale/cultural milestone off the list.

peak baby peak

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Venus In Furs, Heroin, There She Goes Again Subversive lyrics: ✅ Avant-garde: ✅ Banana (for scale): 🍌 This is now my second experience with The Velvet Underground, and third if you count Lou Reed's Transformer. The songs are interesting and diverse. The instrumentation is excellent. Lou Reed is awesome as usual. I am quite happy listening to this, even though I only got in two listens. This is going into the rotation.

Iconic for a reason, but still not a fan of the random bits of audio feedback that grate on the ears. Besides that, solid album! 3.75 stars.

Yet another seminal album I’m hearing for the first time (blasphemy, I know). It’s hard to believe it was made in 1967. Nearly 60 years later, it still feels fresh and completely its own thing (though it clearly spawned generations of artists). There are many great songs, but “Venus in Furs” is a 10/10. It’s not a perfect album by any means, but that is part of its brilliance.

Probably would have been a 2 if it were not for Nico.

This was a solid album and I get why it was a big deal, but man do I hate what this band did to Rock and roll. The album itself was pretty good tho and very New York which is cool. Waiting for my man is fun.

Psych rock, alt rock. Late 60s debut with German singer. Nonchalant delivery. Incredibly influential for all kinds of genres, but flop at first. Know and like more things than I thought. Get why this was considered revolutonary in 60s.

It's very influential ofc, and it has some great ideas. Would be so much better if they practiced their instruments more though.

This isn’t my favorite Velvet Underground album, but The Velvet Underground is one of my faves. Love love love Sunday Morning and Femme Fatale.

I love this album every listen I give it. Never gets old. Always so good.

Musically and culturally, this will always remain a top tier album. I’ll be honest, I can’t say I’m fully on board with a lot of the lyrics, but there’s no denying how far this record pushed cultural norms at the time. What’s crazy is that it was a commercial failure when it first came out and only sold a few thousand copies, but over time it resurfaced and became widely considered one of the greatest albums ever made. It also ended up being massively influential, helping shape punk, goth, and grunge. Even today, this album still has a fun, and raw edge to it.

this album was released in the SIXTIES?? they were doing 80s alternative before 80s alternative existed. favorites: femme fatale; run run run; heroin

A classic for a reason. Great overall album but Venus in Furs is always a repeat track for me.

This is good, Loaded is better

I get the cultural impact and it has some great songs, but a lot of this album is just noise.

erratic

Experimental/psychedelic/low-fi pop/folk/rock? Sunday Morning has a 50s/60s ballad feel in the flow and instrumentation. I'm Waiting for the Man also has an old-fashioned feel for the time, but with almost spoken word lyrics brings it the 70s feel. But it is 60s! Ahead of its time then! Ah, moving through we keep seeing that 60s instrumental with subversive, punky vocal delivery/lyrics. Venus in Furs comes from left field as a psychedelic experimental folk song, which I'm a sucker for. Run Run Run is like a standard 60s song but with that psych/dissonant/low-fi edge. All Tomorrow's Parties is a nice balance of folk/psych. Instrumental Interlude is very nice. Heroin is also great, changes in tempo and dynamics with great effect. Oof end is hard to listen to though, with screeching/feedback sounds. There She Goes Again is another great subversion of the standard 60s pop rock song. Best track - Sunday Morning, Venus in Furs, All Tomorrow's Parties, Heroin, There She Goes Again 4 stars, actually much better than I expected

Can see why it would’ve been impactful and important for the time but too chaotic at times. Favourites, heroin and Sunday morning

A well balanced and very enjoyable album. Some songs were good and some like Heroin were genuinely brilliant. I'll admit that the last track was kinda unnecessary 7.5-8/10

Despite owning "The Velvet Underground & Nico" for years, my visits to it remain sporadic. Every playback leaves me struck by its quality, prompting a vow to return more often that I seldom fulfil. I often question this distance. It may be the record's inherent eclecticism. Even now, tracks like 'Venus in Furs' and 'All Tomorrow’s Parties' feel peerless and 'unpinnable,' resisting any specific mood or genre. There is also the matter of the production; the rawness of tracks such as 'Run Run Run' lends it an unpolished charm frequently dismissed as 'proto-punk'—a term that feels far too reductive for what is happening here. The album's gravitational centre is 'Heroin,' a track that captures the harrowing oscillations of addiction with haunting accuracy. Ultimately, a four-star rating may seem conservative for such a landmark, but it reflects my relationship with an album that, for all its quality, remains strangely out of reach. Side one 1 "Sunday Morning" (5/5) 2 "I'm Waiting for the Man" (5/5) 3 "Femme Fatale" (4/5) 4 "Venus in Furs" (5/5) 5 "Run Run Run" (4/5) 6 "All Tomorrow's Parties" (5/5) Side two 1 "Heroin" (5/5) 2 "There She Goes Again" (3/5) 3 "I'll Be Your Mirror" (5/5) 4 "The Black Angel's Death Song" (Reed, John Cale) (3/5) 5 "European Son"4/5) Total - 48 Average - 4.36 224/1001 125/224 albums reviewed were new to me

1967, wow, I always thought Velvet Underground were much later than that. I've never really listened before. Great singing voice. Had to see who that is, Lou Reed, wow, talk about a smack in the head. Great tracks, yeah, good going 1001.

It’s probably higher, giving the cultural context and how many artists the influence, the lyrics are great. But sound is just really bad. If it was made with the sound of today I think it would be a great to excellent record. Lyrically is fantastic

cool, not catchy, but a fun one, feels like a vibe will come back to see how it grows on me

Pretty good album. Nice lyrics and musical composition. Would listen to again :>.

Fantastic.

I’ll Be Your Mirror is on a playlist that my friend Rowan made when we were feeling very normal about the same fictional characters. Impossible for me to divorce this album from those feelings. The very beginning of The Black Angel’s Death song kept making me think the album had ended and it was playing an early mountain goats track (only for the very beginning). There are tracks I don’t like as much, but I do really like this album. Fav song: I’ll Be Your Mirror - there might be other songs I would prefer if I spent longer with the album but I’m very fond of this one. Least fav: European Son

A bona fide classic although Nico's voice grates a little too much for a 5
