Reviews (page 14 of 14)

Kind of dated, 90s, still famous but didn’t like.

Did not enjoy as the vocals and lyrics have always struck me as over produced

Well this voice is certainly unique. Didn’t hate this as much as I expected to but also found it very hard to finish.

I didn't mind this, but I also found it a bit samey after a few songs. I get the sentiment, but find the backing a bit syrupy. Quite enjoyed some of the lyrics, but feels over-familiar due to the singes.

Slick. Almost too slick. The attitude feels forced. Sure, she's angry. But get over it. I found the breathless vocals annoying. Calm down. No ironic joke form me, either. Which is...

bottom 5 pop vocalist Ever probably

2/5 Best: Wake Up Worst: Mary Jane

Da e greit, men litt irriterande i blant

I didn't really like this album. I thought I would since I've listened to a couple Alanis Morrisette's songs but I got tired of her voice after the 3rd song.

The album is very special.... Kind of sounds bad but then still musically sounds good... Some good tracks but sometimes it felt painful to listen to it.... I would say 2.5/5

Filled with bland instrumentation, shrill vocals, and terrible 90s alt rock-isms this album is a mess. The fact that this is compared to Carole King's masterpiece Tapestry is a joke.

Pas intéressant

PREFS : All I Really Want, You Oughta Know, Hand in My Pocket, Ironic MOINS PREF : Perfect

Definitely better than anticipated. It absolutely stinks of the 90’s but some of the lesser known songs on here are pretty cool compared to the overplayed big hits. The vocals can grate a little for my taste… The musical equivalent of ‘Friends’

This feels like a version of the 90s that has cemented itself as cultural memory and stereotype. I don't know anything about Alanis Morissette's trajectory or how she sees herself as an artist. And yet, I can't help but think she's the more commercially palatable and uncomplicated answer to the rise of artists like Liz Phair, Ani DiFranco and a bevy of fantastic riot grrrl bands. For many, this record was a real moment even if it was one I was distant from. The first couple of songs are okay, but Perfect is hard to listen to. The vocals actively grate. It's like a 12 song album, they could've cut that one and my impression of the first part of the record would've been much better. Okay, maybe also you'd need to cut the track Forgiven as well. I don't know why people reach for the harmonica, ever, but you can keep Head Over Feet. For these ten songs only, I give this record three stars. If I have to take it all, it's going to be two.

Don't get me wrong, musically there are some bangers on here, but the lyrics just really kill it for me on this one.

I really don’t like this album it just sounds bad and isn’t my kind of music. I didnt like any song on it

Kaikissa biiseissä on suht sama rakenne: lyriikkapainotteisia, tietty lauserakenne/sanapari/idea toistuu, popkitaratausta on vain tausta. Mut on siitä silti saatu omaperäinen albumi aikaan. Myyntiluvut silti ihmetyttää

Ansaitsee kaksi tähteä, koska onnistuu siinä, mitä yrittää - eli luomaan päähän soimaan jääviä renkutuksia. Siitäkin huolimatta, että laulajan ääni on aivan saatanan ärsyttävä, ja suuri osa levyn sisällöstä jonkinlaista popiksi standardisoitua Pearl Jamia.

Ok, but not to interesting to me

Even though there are moments on this record I still enjoy, I find a large portion of it unlistenable. I think it was the first album I ever bought, and I loved it until I found grittier stuff, but good golly that harmonica playing is some of the worst I’ve ever heard. Its a tough listen for me now.

I’m sorry but no

Didn't like this

People love this album but I think it’s kinda dated and get annoying after a while the first two tracks are great though

Peak 90’s, stem is vervelend

Best ok

Saaaaaiii!

mimi geignarde if you ask me

Not bad. I’ve heard the ironic Sind before (worst song on that album) Usually I’m not a fan of female artists but this is good. 7/10

I found it quite derivative and this sound isn't my cup of tea Fav song: You oughta know least fav: ironic

Can see why everyone loved it at the time, but the production is horrible and her voice really grates. Extra point for nostalgia.

Didn't like it then, not in the mood to try liking it now.

I just really hate this album. The only thing stopping this from being a 1 star album is You Oughta Know

this hasn't aged well

I really dont care much for this 90s family tv opening theme sound: Fav track:none Least fav:none

lmao i'll pass.

Juvenile, petty, mediocre pop music. Does not stand up to multiple listens

It was interesting to read the reviews for this one, lots of loving 5s but also lots of hateful 1s. She definitely captures the angst and zeitgeist of the 90s, maybe that’s why there are so many 5s. My complaint is a common one, her annoying shrieky, whiney voice which I really couldn’t get past. Isn’t it ironic was a catchy single when it first came out but the intervening 27 years have not been kind to it, and that’s the best song on the album.

Just meh? Will revisit one day.

Great album

It's ok. Other than the 2 singles I'd heard previously, "You Oughta Know" and "Ironic", I don't know why this album resonated with so many people, idk

I'm gonna copy and paste an excerpt of the wikipedia article, which perfectly encapsulates what I'm thinking about this one: "Other critics were less favorable. David Browne of Entertainment Weekly was intrigued by "You Oughta Know" but found the rest of Jagged Little Pill "much harder to swallow", continuing, "What sounds arresting on a single grows wearing over a full album. Producer-co-songwriter Glen Ballard's arrangements are clunky mixtures of alternative mood music and hammy arena rock, and the 21-year-old Morissette tends to wildly oversing every other line." Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune wrote that Morissette "strives for catharsis but often merely sounds histrionic". When listing the album at 45 on the "100 Best Albums of the Nineties", Rolling Stone commented: "Jagged Little Pill is like a Nineties version of Carole King's Tapestry: a woman using her plain soft-rock voice to sift through the emotional wreckage of her youth, with enough heart and songcraft to make countless listeners feel the earth move"." In other words, nice topical lyrics but generally awful music. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 859 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory: 77 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 35 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 30 (including this one)

sounds like something avril lavigne would release if she was active in 1995

violent flashbacks to every tv show and movie playing these songs

Been a while since I heard this. Voice is still nasal and shrill. The singles are pretty catchy though.

Ohhoh kun on ajan hammas puraissut aika saamarin lujaa! Tosi moni näistä biiseistä on sellasii jotka on saanut aivan järkyttävän määrän toistoja radiossa ja leffoissa joten ne on syöpynyt aivoihin aika pahasti. Ihan hyvä tällännen ysärin rakkaus-voimaantumislevyhän tää varmaan on mut liika on liikaa. 2/5

As much as this may be a quintessential 90s pop album I don’t find it too exciting. Morrisette’s voice isn’t the most pleasing to hear for an hour. The songwriting on some of the songs is relatively dull. Her ironic song is comically named wrongly but it is somewhat catchy. You oughta know isn’t too bad either but the rest of the album feels a bit dated already. 3.9/10

It is very, very mainstream. And some of the songs jar but only because you have heard them too many times

Hated this album when it came out. Gave it a genuine listen and I still don’t like it and I don’t get why it became such a big deal. I can see how stitched together it could work as a broadway show soundtrack. That’s as positive a comment as I can make.

I had a vague memory this was supposed to be good, but I didn't like the album recording at all. To jog my memory I watched bits of her live performance at Woodstock '99 on youtube and that sounded so much better. Since we are reviewing the album and not any live versions, I can only give this 2 stars.

Not my jam.

Ooh. Hasn't aged well. Oozes 90s angst but in a nicely packaged form.

I loved this when I was 13. Very much grown out of it.

I don't think 90s music is my thing. So many people say the 90s were the best decade for music, but I'm really not seeing it. Maybe the 4th best decade. A lot of it sounds like music you're supposed to listen to with your head out the window of a car, feeling your youthful angst being washed away.

Familiar with a couple of tracks so expecting more of the same. Unfortunately this wasn't delivered. Somewhat ranting in places which diminished the lyrics.

Not for me, boyos!

Not a fan of her voice.

Had his place in 1995, now it's repetitive

Pop farofa bem normal.

i actually didn’t like this.. i know it’s very impressive that she released such a famous album at such a young age but i just didn’t really see it. the first song kind of set the scene and i actively disliked it. the rest of the album was just eh.. i was familiar with a few but it just didn’t do it at all for me.

Songs in itself are fine, but her voice is kind of weird and it only works for a small number of songs

Well, I never really cared much for her voice. But this album sure does make me feel nostalgic.

Anybody who grew up in the 90's remembers hearing the hit singles on the radio. This album is loaded with 'em. It's catchy and nostalgic for sure, but it's not something I would keep in rotation. Her voice borders on irritating most of the time. The deeper cuts aren't that bad, just not interesting enough to pique my interest.

1995. Ironic, You Oughta Know

I had heard a few of the songs from this album back when it was popular, but I'd never listened to the whole album. Overall, it's...okay. I don't actively dislike it but don't love it, either. I surprised myself by liking "Hand In My Pocket" after all these years. Maybe it's a bit of nostalgia for those years and the general sentiment of that song -- I remember liking it when it was released because irony and cyncism had permeated, well, pretty much everything by the mid-90s, and it was refreshing to hear something with some semblance of hope in it. I get that to some (many? I really have no idea; can hardly fathom my own loose grasp on existence, what the hell do I know of others' experience) listeners that song might be hokey or corny or whatever, but I dig it. She has a great voice, which can come through at times but it can be a bit much, too. And, hey, she played God in Kevin Smith's 1999 comedy "Dogma," so there's that, too.

A few good songs, but rest of the album drags a little. Can see why it’s on the list but wouldn’t listen to the full album again.

got 2 classics, but not a huge fan overall

It was OK. Of its time and I'm not sure its aged well...

not really for me

Not bothered

90’s. I don’t dislike Alanis, but I have never considered any of her songs to be “ear worms”

Unique vocals over pop-py tracks. I enjoyed the poetry but her voice is annoying YEEAAAAYEEAAAA BAAABAAYYYYY

I listened to it... Can't say I'll listen again

alright

Not a fan, too noisy

Very 90s

she went off but i dont see myself ever listening to it again

Do I like '90s alt-rock? Yes. Do I like Alanis Morissette's voice? Honestly, not really. Do I like the concept of Alanis Morissette singing in that voice about how much her exes are missing out on her? Again, that's probably a no. As far as mid-'90s not-quite-grunge goes, there are quite a few other options available that do it better, although I'd be lying if I said that this album doesn't have its moments. Best song: Right Through You was pretty decent, and All I Really Want would have been great as an instrumental.

ddint finish as the album didnt feel good to me.

Really painful listen. Her voice sucks.

not bad

noo me gusta este estilo

Ear assaulter worse than the other 1 stars

Nej tack.

You Oughta Know is a banger but overall her voice comes across as whiny and repetitive.

Jesus Titty Fucking Christ More like isn’t it moronic, don’t you think? Even still, Dave Coullier fumbled pretty hard. She blew him at the movies allegedly but I’m guessing it still wasn’t enough for him. This is music is for 13 year old “deep thinking girls.” I’m all for empowerment but this is just lame. I’ll take The Black Album any day over this. Seriously, this album is stupid and tedious.

Not my taste

Mostly a miss for me. Feels like I'm mopping in a mall and this is the only non-work thing I can hear. Forgiven was kind of fun.

Fuck no

Holy fuck i hate this. She sounds like a female version of the singer from pearl Jam. 1.5/13. 33.97%

There were 3 or 4 good songs, and it’s very 90s nostalgic. Gonna be honest I don’t have anything witty to say about it it’s just not very good. And Uncle Joey wasn’t worth it. He was probably part of that group of people counting down when the Olsen twins were gonna turn 18.

The lyrics are very whingy, get on your tits after a bit, it's all just very shit

I see yer ma's taking the divorce well.

Didn't like it at all. It's very 90s in all bad ways that can be.

I'm trying really hard to approach this one with an open mind. To my knowledge, I've never heard the entirety of this album, though the singles from it were impossible to miss at the time. I don't know Alanis Morrisette's reach outside of Canada, but I have to assume that it was pretty wide if she made this list and that Apple Music has it as one of their 100 Best Albums when I go to stream it. I'm not hearing the appeal though. Is this the Canadian thing where we tend to be highly critical and dismissive of fellow Canadians? On the positive side, I like that she's not actually a very good singer. Her lyrics are raw and angry, fairly explicit for the time, and the lack of polish in her voice works here. From what I recall, this album was minorly scandalous because she was airing some dirty laundry about some well-known actors of the time. I assume her backing band is made up of studio musicians. They're competent, but there's no real character to any of the music. The best I can say here is that this music spoke to a particular moment, but a lot of music at the time had those similar angry, angsty, broody qualities, but this lacks the artfulness to allow it to transcend its time.

I guess it’s good at what it does, but I don’t like that.

Pop bulshit for little girls

Klarer ikke å like dette.

More like Jagged Little Shrill.

Before last Saturday this would have easily been the worst LP I’d ever had the misfortune to listen to all the way through, “Highway To Hell” set a very high bar in that regard but on balance AM just about got over it…OMG, never again. Tom. I found this unbearable, the lyrics, vocals...everything. Charlotte

A dull, unoriginal, bland, and especially repetitive piece of rubbish which goes nowhere throughout its HOUR LONG runtime. A complete waste of time. All songs sound the same with the exact same structure, so it gets tiring after the first two songs, the production doesn't help it in the slightest somehow managing to make everything sound 10x more bland and uncreative. Listening to this is a complete waste of time, it doesn't matter how 'deep' the lyrics are (which they are not) if the music is total rubbish. If you asked an AI to generate a 90s rock album you'd get this piece of crap.

I kinda hate this genre of music ngl so I couldn’t even finish listening to it, which is kinda against the rules but also I am the rules so. My fave lyric was from “You oughta know” ( there are two songs with same name for some reason, this was the first one), where she says “Is she perverted like me? Would she go down on you in a theatre?”. But that’s kinda it. Sounds like 2000s witch movie soundtrack.

Grating

The music itself isn't bad, but these songs were so grating. I actually sighed with relief when the album finished.

Jeg pleier ikke å klage over at noen skriver dårlige sangtexter, men dette bikka meg over. Alanis har ett litterært weapon of choice, og hun bruker det over alt: motstillinger. All I Really Want (også et av de sterkeste sporene): "My sweater is on backwards and inside out And you say, how appropriate" Hand in My Pocket: Hver eneste verslinje. Wake Up: "You like snow, but only if it's warm You like rain, but only if it's dry" Og ingen trenger å si noe mer om Ironic.

horrible. Her voice is off pitch and grated on every nerve.

Bonus point for all three of her hits coming off this album

Možda i četvorka.

Whilst I can understand the appeal from a production perspective, her voice sounds like nails grinding on a chalkboard.

Massively successful. Morissette herself is likeable, but I find the music irritating in pretty much every department.

90s teen drama finishes, You Oughta Know starts playing in the credits.

Not my thing

I know I'm in the minority on this one, but its just too grating. Most 90's stuff is hit or miss, and while this one has some catchy lyrics and fun basslines, the singing is just not my vibe. Sorry Miss Morissette

The first song threw me off. Couldn't listen to the whole album

Ally McBeal-grunge. Jag vill inte höra det igen

Nej, nej, nej… Det här borde inte vara tillåtet. Inför censur! Bland Canada!

Fullkomligt vidrigt munspel i Head over Feet.

Cements my hate for Alanis’ voice… don’t get the hype, all sounds the same to me

not my cup of tea

Painful. Apparently the 13th best selling album of all time. I first heard this while following the 20 Million Club podcast, wasn't impressed then and it still doesn't do anything for me.

The best songs are like a female Bob Dylan, but not in a good way. The rest is some kind of Canadian Hannah Montana slop.

Very modern pop singing, really don't like it

That moment when you already late and then a traffic jam hits 🤣🤣

This is a record of it's time that does not date well, I did buy it at the time. I saw her live at a festival and did enjoy the experience. The problems I find now are several: schreaching ( who ever is torturing stop you cruel bastards), lyrics some of the worst angry teen lyrics of all time and ones written to shock (but don't) like the sexual references clumsy. It's so contrived and lacks any sophistication. FUCK ME JUST READ THE REVIEWS YOU LOVE HER OPEN YOUR EARS. DATED MUSIC MEANS IT IS SHIT NAME ME ONE CLASSIC THAT SOUNDS DATED. DON'T EVEN MENTION THE IRONY THAT ISN'T

Typ One Tree Hill-soundtrack.

No sir , I don’t like it.

The singles got a lot of radio play at the time, but I found them whiney and annoying, so never listened to the album. I've now listened to it all, and I find it ... whiney and annoying.

Generic

I don't like 90's. she seems angry.

Not for me, isn't it ironic.

I wasn't angry about listening to this for about 30 seconds and it was the 2 unexpected harmonica solos. I told myself if she was younger than 19 when this came out, I'd give it a 2. No dice

A voice like nails on a chalkboard, but a little worse

I have it a shot but this album has not aged we'll at all for me. The production is decent enough, but very dated. The songs are ok musically, the lyrics are juvenile dreck, and the vocals are atrocious. I didn't realize until today just how bad a singer Alanis is, but it's a bit jarring on a close listen.

Ironic was catchy 30 years ago, but the rest fell flat.

god I hate her voice, I'm sorry, it's just so grating to listen to and ruins everything. doesn't help that this sounds dated and uninspired

I just cannot get past her affect. I hate the way she chooses to sing. I've heard her sing great, but the choice she makes here just grates on me so much. I can't stand it, and I can't really put that aside and rate the album outside of it. It's just nails on a chalkboard to me.

This was sooooo hard to listen to - 0/5 please make it stop

And I'm here to remind you that this mess exists... You, you, aught pass.

This sucks

wau täksi päiväksi tuli tämmöin klassikko, korkeasti arvosteltu albumi! joka ikinen mahdollinen ominaisuus tässä on paskaa! ärsyttävää 90 luvun poppirock kirkumista, maailman tylsimmät kitaralinjailut ja kusisesti miksattu rumpukoneisto. tähän päälle lyriikat jotka kuulostaa 14-vuotiaan kirjoittamilta tältä aikuiselta naiselta. kaikki mitä amerikkalaisessa (noh, känädä on sama asia) musiikissa on viime vuosikkymmeninä ollut niin vitun virheellistä. täältä arbitage ja pelkkää objektivismia, ja tämä albumi on syöpää, keuhkon. all i really want

90s-pop-by-the-numbers production; some of the most irritating vocal affectations ever recorded; and SO MUCH lyrical detritus: to paraphrase, its the sound of pretensions falling all around

I can't stand her voice it's just an abomination and some songs are just the pits, but you can't deny 'You ought to know' and the other 'hits' stand up to the test. It sounds very dated and I can never get over the fact that it's so ironic that all the lyrics in ironic are not ironic as so well done by Ed Byrne in a comedy skit.

Musically it is OK, but I really hate Alanis Morissette vocals from the bottom of everything I have. Not to mention everything I hate in Ironic...

Not my cup of tea. Glad I´ve heard it but won´t listen again.

I couldn’t finish this

Um.... just a bit weird... bit too weird for me to really enjoy but I can see why some people like it... not vibing tho

Gefällt mir nicht!

Her voice... Yeah, I don't like it. It's not that it is bad, it's how she sings. Sounds like Jonathan Davis but in the totally wrong context

I suppose the music is good, but I just can't get over her voice.

Look, I don’t comment on the albums I listen to here… I legitimately try to be objective, and generally can listen to an album and then go about my day. I will listen, rate, and then move on. But sometimes, UGH. I listen to some shit that brings me back to a time and I just cannot get past it and move on… and JFC, even almost 30 (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) years later I cannot. I WANT TO LIKE THIS ALBUM BUT OMG I CANNOT. The whiiiiiiiining. Omg. All I really want is to never listen to this whiny shit again.

Morrisette portrayed a mute God in Kevin Smith’s 1999 film, Dogma. I guess if you were mistreated by some ass hole in the 90’s then this album may have messianic properties also. Sadly for me it’s a messsy mix of alt rock rage and arena rock balladry. Listen to Tori Amos or Fiona Apple instead.

This album and artist reminds me of a horrible boss I had at the time this came out. She absolutely loved it and I can't stand it, but I recognize it's mostly because of the b**** Lynette. But also it has a kind of affectation that I don't like. The same as Lynette I guess. Dang, I can't even get through the album and I'm normally down for a good rant.

Her voice is annoying to me. Didn’t enjoy this at all.

Did not like

I'd like to listen to music not whining

Did not enjoy at all

Bisschen langweilig. Sehr ruhige Musik, vielleicht Richtung indie

Songs aren’t bad. Singing is dreadful

22/100

furchtbares geschrei, musste ausmachen

Not ma vibe.

Meh. Her constant yodeling voice flips are unlistenable.

This could have stayed in the 90s.

no no no, i’m not trying to be a dick it’s just no good

WARNING: Prolonged listening can lead to an increased risk of certain side effects and complications, including nausea, migraines, diarrhea, perforated eardrums, dizziness, and death.

Despite having listened to many of these songs many many times, I just really don't like her music.

This album made me want to give up on day 1. Kept checking back to spotify to see how many songs were left.

An incredibly powerful piece of little evil
