Reviews (page 4 of 8)
An excellent album
I enjoyed it, good vibes and electronic beats. More on the chill end especially on the back half, so it was some good background music for work. I'm a sucker for when songs lead straight into each other.
This was definitely a step above most electronic dance music stuff. Still not my cup of tea, but every song was solid. Could imagine a DJ in a 90s rave just throwing this album on and just stepping away for an hour and no one would complain.
Cool rock electronica fusion. I appreciate the roomy kit sound. Playground For A Wedgeless Firm is probably my favorite track.
Would dance to it in the club.
Sounds like taking LSD during a rave in the middle east. It's also good music to play in the background while coding. 3.9/5
Good one.
Excellent debut released in the midst of Big Beat, a genre which produced a lot of brilliant records but was also quite one dimensional. Chemical Brothers did use this a template but added elements of techno and acid house on the likes of Somg To The Siren & Chemical Beats. The chilled Chico’s Groove brings some respite and the Beth Orten collab on closer Alive Alone is my favourite of the Chem Bros slower vocal tracks.
Big beats and guitars. What a recipe.
I'm not at all educated in dance/electronic music, but what caught my ear was the finesse of the layering and the flow of each song. Will try to implement this into my road trip playlists.
las últimas me parecieron medio pedorras xD
It was good but as an album it was very repetitive. I'd happily listen to individual tracks again but probably not a full album
Carefully crafted from start to end. Love the transition from high energy to down low a little more than half way. Embodies the mood of all the movies and video games of the late 90s to early 00s... but came out in 95! What a pioneer. Main downside is repetition which was a bit too much for me to handle at once.
Bouncy
Great production and interesting variation in styles. Really enjoyed this record. Not quite 5 star material but would listen again
The first half of this album is fantastic. As someone who's never listened to the Chemical Brothers before, the first six tracks make it clear why they're so legendary. Awesome big beat tracks that flow into each other with classic acid synths and samples coming and going to keep it constantly refreshing. One of my favourite albums of all time is Daft Punk's Alive 2007, and this sounds like the precursor to that album. Then there's the second half... this half is honestly mediocre. The heavy dance beats give way to five mellowed out and honestly boring tracks. I have no desire to relisten to any of these tracks, and when I revisit this album I won't bother with them. First half: 5/5 Second half: 2/5 Total: 4/5
Good one! Groovy funky dancy beats, interesting vocals and just an overall good presentation. Seems more mature than 1995!
Classic. Their best album.
Funky start. All the songs just are continuous which is cool. EDM. Fav songs Chemical Beats Three little birdies down beats One too Many Mornings
pretty bangin
I would like to come back to this album in the future. Have heard one offs by the CBs, but never an album beginning to end.
Excellent dance album that sets their future sound
This should not expand dong. But it does. (☉_☉). Three Little Birdies Down Beats eh a stand-out track. Perai que meu chefe esta me ligando
awesome start - ends a bit weak
Good stuff. trance like, but funky too
Amazing stuff
Pretty good house/electronica, but I prefer their tracks without vocals to the ones that have them.
4 star
Super bon album, les sonorités classiques des frères chimiques!
I'm giving this a 4/5 solely because this type of music was in nearly every damn movie i watched growing up in the 90's and 2000's. From "Swordfish" to "The Matrix" this type of music is ingrained in me to like.
Dig it
Excellent, hard driving dance pop.
Good background music, chill beats.
I had this CD in my car for ages. The Chemical Brothers are GODS in their field.
Great for a listen while on a run
This album is pretty dope - lots of really catchy loops and beats. 'Three Little Birdies Down Beats' and 'Chico's Groove' are the highlights for me. Easily a 4 star, closer to 4.5
Awesome relatively unknown Chemical Brothers album (atleast for me), brings me back to the rythem bangers of the 90's
Nice album thanks the chemical brothers
It's pretty fun techno/house. Not really my genre but I still enjoyed it
interesting. normally not a fan of the "edm"kind of music but this is enjoyable!!
reminded me of being a seedy teenager in the late 90s, and of all those seedy cunts that listen to this type of tweaker shit. great album
Good background music to work to. Not very memorable to me, but I still enjoyed it.
very good first half, but after a while, it gets a bit boring
3 British electronica albums in a row. I preferred it slightly to the 808 state and Talvin Singh, but it's still just fine. More the style of beats I like, but at the end of the day, not the sort of thing I'd usually seek out to listen to at home. Album was def stronger at the start for me, "Leave Home" and "In Dust We Trust" were the standouts for me
I probably like this a little more than Dig Your Own Hole. Exit is edgier, sonically. And the vocals are (somewhat?) more appealing. I gave Dig two stars, but it’s probably closer to two-and-a-half stars. I’m giving this three stars. But it might be closer to two-and-a-half stars, too. Math, eh?
Lovely album, represents a lot of Brazilian Bossa Nova vibe.
two albums in a row from 95, electronic music influenced by hip hop, interesting production moments and sound palette, with glitchy touches contrasting with the drums and their organic beats, really good sequencing it plays with textures, dynamism, and repetition, prioritizing atmosphere and ambience over substance and depth, which can make the songs feel static while i cant say it sounds bad or that i dislike it, i dont feel much connection to the music. i feel its purpose is more utilitarian than emotional, which isnt a problem, but it is not what i usually look for
Has a party electronic vibe to it feels long but it’s only 50ish minutes good for backround music to keep energy up but boring when just listening to it. Personally not for me but many people would appreciate what was put into this album.
Funny that I listen to the Chemical Brothers a day after watching Sonic 3, which uses them in their soundtrack. I enjoyed it
Great background music and a really fun, non-repetitive electronica album
Good for background music. A bit odd. Nothing jumped out of the speakers at me. Not sure if I’d want to listen again. Plus, I’d likely say that there are arguments to replace this album on the list with a multitude of others.
Classic 90s techno- good energy but a little repetitive. Good background music for working.
358/1001 The Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ Whilst I don't mind this type of music as a one off song here and there, it becomes a bit of chore for a full length album. I think because to me, it all bleeds into one another. It's fine I guess...
I enjoyed the second half better than the first. Overall not bad.
I haven't listened to much electronic music before besides a few stuff by Aphex Twin so being able to listen to new albums in the genre is exciting, and I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Very different from the kind of electronic music you here in the club but this is more my cup of tea. Really fun to listen to while doing stuff. Fav Songs One Too Many Mornings Leave Home Alive Alone Is it Top 1001 Worthy (is it essential)? Probably yes, good album in the electronic genre, can take your time to get to this but it is worth the listen if you want.
Not my favorite genre, but a decent listen nonetheless. I really liked the last song.
The sound of the late 90s (even though this was 95). Pretty sick, honestly. I probably only want to listen to it once a decade but it made me feel like a computer hacker in coke in a Michael Bay movie.
2.9 Liked this better that Dig your own hole
Definitely a sound you won’t mistake but i quite enjoyed it
7/10 Best songs: Alive Alone In a lot of ways this album is peak 90s music. Like, when I think of music in the 90s, snare drums against synthesizers with a very distinct electronic tone immediately comes to mind. That's not to say I think this is a fantastic album - because it isn't. Listening to each track in a vacuum works well because they each burst with energy and embrace a non-stop, forever pushing-onward sound, but listening to them all in a row is a bit exhausting. I think the album could use a few more valleys to match its non-stop peaks. But it is interesting, and very much deserving of its place on this list, so there's that.
1) one too many mornings 2) alive alone 3) life is sweet
Rock, E-Beats, 1995 -> 2-3
Groovy EDM, I like they constructed songs IMO, wouldn't turn it off. None stood out to add to playlist though
497/1089 - This is definitely electronic rave music.
Earlier dnb, feel very spoiled by what I’ve seen live
Not bad music, but not my jam.
At least it is better than Haunted Dancehall.
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
I'll say it, toss it on the list of great debut albums. I gotta give it to them, this is great to listen to while you do something that takes focus. Cool one to listen to. Didn't change my life and the genre isn't the most skillful but it makes sense to be here. More enjoyment vs appreciation.
They are one of the best at what they do. A good example of a style. It started off pretty good but got lost along the way. Fell off after Track 6. Not convinced that more than one album is required by them
Enjoyable.
Lyder stort! Fedt lyt, men også virkelig en af de der "den her Chemical Brothers plade blev valgt fordi det er deres debut" situationer
No huge bangers, just pretty decent throughout
Preferisco altri album e brani dei chemical brothers però comunque si merita tre stelle
Still not a fan of electronic music intended for dancing, it just sometimes get so repetitive. Other genres that are repetitive tend to have more singing which helps break up the monotony. This still was better than most electronic dance music albums I've heard, but overall it's not the strongest collection of music. Highlight Song/s: "Song to the Siren" and "One Too Many Morning"
Good as far as techno goes, would be fun in the right situation but still not engaging enough on its own
i was not in the right setting or (dare i say, even) mental space for this. i totalllly get it though like totally
“In Dust We Trust” slams. “Chico’s Groove” is great. Lovely, actually. “Alive Alone” is sad and groovy and just cool. A very solid chem bros album
fine
Tråkigt som satan
Un peu un mood de the Alan person project
Music to commit heists to, or at the very least music to hack computers to. Edgy and illegal situations is the vibe I’m getting for the first half of the album at least. We chill a bit after that.
some good tunes but most didn’t catch my attention so much
As mentioned in my review of The Prodigy's 1994 album, "Music for the Jilted Generation", electronic music is a difficult genre to properly rate. This is an electronic music record from that same era with a similar style. Unlike the Prodigy, there is little palpable emotion here; it's techno for the masses. A lot of it is surprisingly hooky, and there's some definite efforts at songwriting. However, electronic music isn't really my thing, and this album isn't particularly great even within the boundaries of the genre as a whole. It works to set a vibe or as party music, but it isn't good to just listen to on a casual basis. Overall, it's an admirable but not stellar effort in a genre that is far from easy to properly listen to and rate.
3.5 Okay, obviously this is better than most of the other British electronica albums I’ve gotten. But it is hard to genuinely enjoy this on its own when I’ve gotten twenty shitty albums wishing they were the Chemical Brothers over the past three years. A shame I got this so late, a shame this list is full of horrible British electronica that’s not the Chemical Brothers.
The perfect soundtrack for mindless, repetitive work tasks on a Wednesday morning. (Sorry, I copied this review and just changed the day of the week. But it fits!)
I listened to this album after coming back from a lunch break spent laying down in my car, feeling a little rested and a little subdued. I was immediately intrigued by how funky this album was, blending industrial electronic sounds with catchy drum grooves. In Exit Planet Dust, I was hearing the bones of what would go on to become the electronic music I grew up on, though this project exhibits less of a focus on drops and payoffs then my usual taste in electronic music leans towards. The Chemical Brothers craft more of a consistent energetic vibe, which I respect, I just had a hard time getting into its groove; I love how smoothly this album moves from one song to the next, serving as one continuous mix from beginning to end, but many of its songs just wash over me. There are lots of scratches and lasers throughout as well, futuristic sounds which will feature prominently in much electronic music going forward, but which have never done much for me. The songs here which incorporated human voices or were a little more chilled out grabbed my attention more, probably because the changing dynamics draw me further into the songs, as opposed to those which kept a consistent, rarely changing pace. I have heard later songs from The Chemical Brothers which are more in my wheelhouse, but I know there are many for whom Exit Planet Dust is an electronic classic. Highlights: Leave Home, Song To The Siren (Live From Sabresonic Nightclub, United Kingdom / 1994), Fuck Up Beats, Chemical Beats, One Too Many Mornings, Alive Alone
Sounds like the music that Spy shows in the late 90s, early 2000s would have used. Like, I could see this being the music they play over a montage of a spy breaking into the high-tech vault that is inexplicably behind an active night club.
Not their best but ok.
2.7 Always found the Chemical Brothers to be the worst out of the Prodigy/Fatboy slim trio, with them lacking the formers punk energy and the latters pop sensibility, falling through the cavern in the middle. Also, listening to this is kind of frustrating, given the plethora of other 90s electronica that could have made it on here, Squarepusher, Autechre, etc. Even Drukqs would have been a much more interesting inclusion than this.
I feel like this would be more enjoyable if a couple of these was put into a set and mixed in. That’s the issue I have with quite a lot of electronic albums. That being said, this is still an enjoyable listen
A mixed bag (no pun intended). Some bangers. Some dancefloor filler. It suffers the same fate as many dance albums, where the context of a DJ set makes more sense than an 45 minute album.
Fine album.
Fine, nice electronic vibes, not really for me but had its moments
Pretty decent, inoffensive electronica. Reminds me of The Prodigy, but not quite as good or interesting.
Listening session: april 14th, while going for a walk Listened to before: no Thoughts: I rarely listen to electronic music but this album really set the mood for an energetic walk. I especially liked that the whole album felt like one big continuous music set instead of separate tracks. This made it hard to choose a favourite track though Favourite tracks: Leave Home & In Dust We Trust
Good beats. Needs time and place
Listening to Exit Planet Dust is like a throwback to the mid-to-late 90s Big Beat era, it's a really cool starting point for where electronic music was going. For a first album, it's amazing how well it all fits together and the songs flow like a DJ set, going from the fast-paced beats in the first half to a chill vibe at the end. It's great for working or driving, with those repetitive, hypnotic synths and bass that get you into it without being annoying. Yeah, some of the sounds are a bit old school now, and some tracks can blend together so you're never sure where it begins of ends, but you can tell it's well made. It's got that balance between clean pop production and a gritty rave feel. From the solid kick off of "Leave Home" and "In Dust We Trust" to "Alive Alone", it's both a trip down memory lane and a solid groove that still gets me moving, even after all these years.
Im not really into dj music but I was open minded and actually somewhat enjoyed this!
good ones are good, rest are unremarkable
It sounds cool and innovative, but also a lot of it is the same for me. It reminds me of my younger years, but that’s about it. Not something I’d intentionally seek to listen to, but it’s cool, I guess.
Definitely not my kind of vibe but I can appreciate the energy behind it.
3.9
3.7, doesn’t quite earn the 4 for me but has some unique sounds and beats. For sure not for everyone but this is solid, especially for a debut album.
As an engineer might say, I certify that this album substantially complies in all material respects with the original design intent and is fit for use. In other words, when you aren’t high in a nightclub, this album has some fun moments, but is generally mediocre to listen to.
I want to do a controlled scientific study on if listening to music like this makes me write my little reports faster. Speed, not accuracy is the key variable.
Another electronic record that did not do much for me. Definitely one of the better-sounding ones so far.
Electronic music doesn't excite me, but the variety here was nice. From pounding, high-energy percussion in earlier tracks to some more chill beats later on, this wasn't just hypnotic repetition (there was plenty of that, but not mind-numbing).
Argh--the curse of this project is its obsession with showcasing debut albums above all else for promising bands. I've been a big Chemical Brothers fan for a long time, and while I'm really glad they got included in the collection (and even more glad that they get two albums), this is *not* one of their best albums. Even worse, this album's relentless focus on making instrumental dance beats does a disservice to The Chemical Brothers (formerly Dust Brothers until the US Dust Brothers promised to sue them if they didn't change their name). Later albums have both more variety and more of a song structure to most of their tracks (sort of captured with "Alive alone"), which is a large part of their appeal to me. There's nothing wrong with this album--it definitely gets stronger in the second half--and even a few good-to-great tracks on it: mainly their original hit "Song to the siren" (especially fun to find out that one of the samples in this is from Dead Can Dance, a band that should have made it's way into this collection btw), the more forward-looking "Chemical beats" and "Life is sweet" (mainly for the odd video, but also nice to have The Charlatans' Tim Burgess providing vocals). But despite these positives, it's definitely not what I would have chosen for this collection, given how much more they've done with their career.
Feels like a 90s action movie montage
Its
Not really the kind of stuff I usually listen to, but there were some cool sounds in this. This album's a bit same-y after a while, but it's really enjoyable when you get into their groove. Favorites: In Dust We Trust, Fuck Up Beats, Chemical Beats, One Too Many Mornings
Correcto
It’s cool I guess. I’ve gotten so many electronic albums recently that I might be getting fatigued.
3/5 - Not my usual style, but I was into this. Maybe because the thumping corresponded with all the sinus pressure in my head. Of all the rave-y albums we've had here, I'd pick this one so far.
Sometimes you get electronica that sounds like a toy raygun put up against a microphone or you get the intro song to Blade at the blood rave. This hits a middle spot. You could definitely put some of these songs in cool action movies of the era or in your favorite dance halls. Its repetitive as fuck but thats par for the course in this genre, and these guys are one of the better ones at it.
Leave home sounds like the extended cut of the “you wouldn’t download a car” piracy ad, can see this whole album being apart of some mid 2000's indie rock film the songs flowed pretty nicely into each other as well, absolutely love when artists do that makes you want to listen to the whole album one too many mornings and alive alone felt like a movie character send off, they're walking off into the sunset onto new beginnings as the credits roll. maybe im just describing the album cover playground was essentially goop vibes, my brain was getting scanned, that probably makes no sense but that's what i heard i can say i didn't have high expectations for this one coming in but i enjoyed it more than i thought i would
I didn't hear much about its advance.
Honestly, so far after hearing half of this album I am not too impressed. I love a few of their songs, and they are among the main Big Beat bands, but for me this is not even close to Prodigy, probably 3 stars, but will see after listening to this fully
A little non descript, but kewl
I'm mostly pretty disinterested in the "big beat" genre but I'll accept that this is a strong example of the form. I get a little more mileage out of the dreamier bits like "One Too Many Mornings" and "Alive Alone" (having lyrics definitely helps there too).
The kind of music that makes a great 30 second needledrop in a heist movie, but is extremely tedious as an album 2.5
cool
Started strong then started to get a bit redundant. I don’t blame the music as much as my taste.
Very interesting, not my cup of tea but was cool to listen to. I feel like you could plug this into any late 90’s/Early 00’s action movie and no one would bat an eye. 5.5/10
A versatile album with simple but groovy beats that work well in all circumstances, wether it's on headphones, as background music or for clubbing. Personally, I never could completely get into TCB's sound, I've always been more drawn to the harsher, more industrial beats of The Prodigy. By comparison, this album feels lighter, almost too conventional (even if it was indeed grounbreaking at the time), and doesn't cut as deep as it could have. But that's just a personal preference ; Exit Planet Dust is still an iconic Big Beat album. A pleasant listen overall, but not something I'd really play at home these days. 6/10
There was nothing wrong with this album per se. I just can't see a situation where I'd want to listen to it again.
I was actually pretty surprised by this album. Lots of cool experimental sounds that take me back to the cyber grunge of the 90's and early 2000's
5/10 Can sit in the background doing it's things, but doesn't warrant too much attention as it never really changes. The tracks with singers on are by far the best
not my favourite Chem Bros record but still such a good listen
It’s a generous 3 as I like the chem bros as a live act, not usually the kind of thing I listen to at home
I enjoyed most of this, especially for something to have on while cleaning and organizing some things at home. However, there were at least three points where there was like a whining/squealing sound happening and it meant that I couldn't just sit back and enjoy the album all the way through because I'd get yanked out, wincing, wondering if everyone else but me has high-frequency-sound hearing loss. 3.5
not my kinda thing but its cool, i think gachiakuta should put them awn the soundtrack team
These albums for me are easy to enjoy, but hard to love. This didn't get boring. It's actually really good at times. I don't know if I would come back to this album to listen as deeply as I did this time, but for good background music, definitely.
Rating: 5.5/10
Pretty generic background house/electronic music.
One of the easiest dance/ electronic albums I have listened to. Love the breakbeats and the prodigy type production. Few fun fills and vocal stabs too to keep it interesting. Unfortunately not much variety but still an enjoyable listen
A nice surprise from a band with a longer history than I would have expected.
Pretty crazy this is from the early to mid 90s. Sounds incredibly ahead of it time. However, just not really my vibe. 3/5
відчуття ніби я дивлюся серіал 90х типу поліція маямі чи сіесай місце злочину
Some interesting and chill electronica. Different as it wasn’t just nightclub music, it was actually a vibe (idk how else to explain it).
I know I'm not the only one who feels like listening to this is like listening to a foreign language. My brain just doesn't process this the same way as it does, say, a guitar and vocal. I might as well be listening to a documentary recording of a city street at midday or a severe thunderstorm in Davenport, Iowa in 1998.
Imagine watching one of those 90s action movies fight / chase scenes ... for almost an hour ... That is this sound ttrack, I mean album
Another album that might be a 4 on a further listen. Something to revisit later.
You wouldn’t steal a car type beat
Highlights: Chemical Beats, Chico's Groove, Life Is Sweet. In a nutshell: rockin' beats. I daresay the Chemical Brothers sound is more creative and layered than their contemporary Fatboy Slim (who released Better Living Through Chemistry in September 1996). It's a vibe. Get into it. Overall: 5/10
Not my favorite by these guys but a solid techno/rave album. It definitely is well produced and shows their abilities to make these fast, punchy beats but I think I prefer when they go a little more surreal/psychedelic. Definitely a cool intro record and glad these guys are represented though as they are electronic music legends.
What chemicals were they on? I have mixed feeling about the Techno genre. A lot of Techno tracks feel like filler to me, but some are crazy good. The quality swing is sad to me. And it is very much apparent on this album. Some tracks like “Leave Home” and “In Dust We Trust” I find to be of top quality, while those such as “Song To The Siren” and “Three Little Birdies Down Beats” sound like something a 4th grader made on their computer. You really get to feel that these guys are having fun on the tracks. I love to imagine that they probably went into the studio one day, and someone just said out of nowhere: “We should use guns shots in one of the beats” (specifically in “Three Little Birdies Down Beats”). The wierd sounds they bring to the table shape the mood of the album, even if they don’t sound good always. The album really is a fun experience though. You’re never really sure what will happen next. Will they play some extremely pitched up vocals? A crazy new set of drums. Or maybe a fucking dolphin scream idk.
If I were going to listen to EDM outside of a club setting, I would actually put some of these tracks on. Mostly though, I'm not going to buy and play EDM at home or in my car.
A bit too drawn-out, but pretty interesting beats. I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it, but it lasted way too long.
Felt like I had heard the entire album in the first 30 seconds. Did these guys pay off the author? 🤔
Definitely more a collection of 12-inch tracks rather than an album. Starts with great purpose, but after a few tracks the template starts to feel a bit tired and the last few tracks feel out of place. There are some subtle touches in there that I wouldn’t have associated with the Chems, and some of the sample choices show more musical depth than many of the big beat merchants of the time. It’s definitely of its time, and not a classic by any means.
Such a cool album! The balance of instrumentals, electric and electronic, rock and techno, wow! I’m loving the sound, unlike anything I’ve listened to before
The closer Alive Alone is brilliant
Good album. Prefer the tracks with vocals especially the Beth Orton one. Need to be in the mood, best suited as music in a public space or when driving, wouldn’t sit down and put it on jus to listen to it as a full album but wouldn’t skip any tracks if the come on in a shuffle. 3.7
Electronic dance music
Otvalite)
Unfortunately I'm rarely in a mood to listen to this much electronica in one sitting. Well done music though.
Was never really my bag but still a great album with one or two tracks that I loved at the time. Nice to revisit - didn’t feel like it had aged badly at all.
Not my shit but but a few ok tunes
Not my fav album from them, it was entertaining enough
Slightly dirge-y. Uninspired but perfect for a job I hate.
Crazy funk
Decent 3
I like this more than I thought I would, reminds me of a bunch of 90s/2000s action movies. The songs were kind of long though and I don’t know when I would ever pick this up just to listen. Favorite Song(s): In Dust We Trust, Leave Home
a little bit to concept but had some great songs
I appreciate the energy but I grew tired of this trip hop about half way through
Not my favorite genre, but this was pretty good.
This is my second Chemical Brothers album in less than a week, weird how the randomizer works sometimes. This one is not as good or as fun as Dig Your Own Hole, which I gave a 4/5. Too much of the same beat over and over, especially on the first half of the album. It’s lacking the punch and distinctiveness between the tracks like the other album had. 3/5
OK
Goed debut album, duidelijke basis voor latere (betere) albums. Je hoort dat wel wel heel vet is maar begint ook een beetje te vervelen als je het hele album luistert.
This turns into background noise pretty quick
One Too Many Mornings
Tecno
I can see how if you liked it you'd really like it. It was just there for me. Didn't like it too much, didn't actively hate it. Maybe drugs would help.
Pretty decent, I would probably have appreciated it more if I listened to it in the context it was presumably intended to be enjoyed in.
The Good: We will soon no longer find ourselves on a dusty planet! The Bad: We’ve traded that one in for a repetitive planet… The Ugly: Everthing… but the album cover… that picture is pretty sweet. It’s not bad. It’s not great either. However, if I would have to choose EMD then I would go for this one prior to any other many of the other one’s on the list… Just checked, and Electronic gets a whopping 20 albums on this list… FUCK ME!!! Shooting this one down the barrel… 3*
i got this album right after “better living through chemistry” by fatboy slim and it’s the same kind of repetitive thing… at least there’s slightly more vocal bits on this one but overall, not my mood. a good, solid album though. i like electronic music but this hasn’t hit like i want it to. i had “one too many mornings” saved on my floaty moods playlist and i like that song. 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Has some bangers
3.5/5
There are some parts of the album that absolutely hit. A lot of the samples are nice, just often overused until they feel repetitive.
It literally put me to sleep, but not necessarily in a bad way. Chill and good, but not memorable.
"Good" electronic music in the sense that it's pretty fun to listen to without dancing or drugs. Interesting did't realize there were two dust brothers, and that they are not the same guys what did Pauls Boutique
Less interesting than I remembered but pretty solid
Solid but repetitive. Good for workouts or just working in general.
Listenable.
I wanted to like it more than I did. My main issue is with the structure of the songs as they didn’t really go anywhere or have a strong enough hook to build around. I like a lot of their other stuff but this was a bit of a disappointment.
I’m going to be critical but if I’m going to be fair to other albums on this list I have to be. I like the chemical brothers. I like that they created electronic music that wasn’t necessarily designed for the club and exit planet dust falls into that style. There are some decent songs on this album (‘leave home’, ‘song to the siren’, ‘chemical beats’), most of which take inspiration from psychedelic rock music, but these are decent but not mind blowing. Beyond that, there seems to be a reasonable amount of filler and doesn’t have the consistency of something like ‘dig your own hole’ or (my personal favourite) ‘surrender’.
Reminded me of the soundtrack to a video game but in a good way.
The beats are interesting and good on this album, but the repetitiveness of it all just wears on me. Not bad but certainly not great.
It's got that 90s electronic sound that I prefer to hear when I listen to electronic music which is almost never. But if I did, this is what I'd want to hear. It's perfect background music for doing monotonous work tasks. And I get that electronic music deserves to be represented here, but it's kind of hard to listen to Dark Side Of The Moon the other day and then listen to this and think they're somehow mentioned together in any kind of way.
Was excited for Chemical Brothers to appear but I liked this a little less than I was expecting. While a few of the tracks felt a little samey with a similar funky groove, there was enough diversity throughout the rest to keep me hooked. Standout tracks for me were: “Song to the Siren”, “Chico’s Groove”, “One Too Many Mornings”
Noise
Racing game music
I liked it!
3 sterne
Instrumental isn't really for me but I can see myself spinning a few in the background whilst doing other things.
This was fine. If I was into the British House, or BIG BEAT, movement I'd probably really enjoy this. Front to back it's kinda like a 90s action thriller soundtrack, which The Chemical Brother . . . checking Google . . . HAVE done (for the film Hanna from 2011. Not quite 90s). Anyway, decent album but I can't recall a lick of it
One of my preferred instrumentals I guess? No hey boy hey girl though is it!
This is the musical definition of a safe pair of hands. Absolute solid 40 mins or so.
repetitive but it had their bops for sure
The block rocking beats are here. The builds and breakdown as well. The foundational tones (so many squiggles). The oscillators - in full effect. . It's good and all. They really go to town on an idea. Ideas they would refine in years to come - funkier groovier zanier years to come. 3.5 stars.

Super pace and great sound to this album. New to me but definitely worth a listen. Probably would sound even better live.
This was very good background music for me while I worked. I can't imagine another scenario where I'd put this album on.
This album flip flops between being a great Tony hawk skate soundtrack and making me feel like I'm in a drug trip in a movie. Very well written drum beats, hypnotic and repetitive. The first half ended up sounding very samey, due to each track flowing into each other. I typically enjoy when albums do this, but since it's so bare Bones, it led to each of them feeling quite similar. It was interesting to hear the songs halfway through, when they were able to experiment more, but these also typically fell a little flat for me. The last song on the album had me the most hopeful, since this is the one and only song where the artists actually sing. I have nothing against this album, but there's not a ton to grab onto for me. I'll probably listen to this again next time. I feel like I want to be at a rave
Definitely not my style of music, however, I can see how it would be a total vibe for some people.
Son un buen grupo para verlos en directo con sus juegos de luces y demás. En la disco también. pero no merece la pena escucharles en casa.
A really fun record but gets a little one sided. Glad I listened. If I need to get some of this type of music into my blood stream, this is the record I want.
A tiny bit repetitive, but that's also the genre of music (sampled)
Meh
Chill 90s electronic album. Not my fave of the genre, but a good time. 3/5
While far from life changing, this album made for an okay listen in the background of a normal work day. While the instrumentals were at times repetitive erring on boring, there were a few songs that stood above the rest. Opener Leave Home feels like it was made for a preparation montage in a heist movie; Chemical Beats, while repetitive, had some nice underlying modulations and I enjoyed the ropey synths; One Too Many Mornings felt a bit like a Gorillaz cast-off, but in the best of ways; and I actually sort of enjoyed the weirdness of Playground for a Wedgeless Firm. For me this is a solid 3.
Some pretty great working music that I was buzzing along to. Really enjoyed Alive Alone at the end.
Э. Медленные вещи звучат неплохо. Суровая электроника - очень устарело. Лучшая песня - One Too Many Mornings.
Good EDM. Hits pretty hard.
Kind of weird but I liked it. Could be fun for snowboarding
Köyhän miehen prodigy. Ihan kivoja tamppausrytmejä
Ei sitä parasta mutta kelpo kuunneltavaa 3,5⭐️⭐️⭐️
It drones a bit, but I enjoyed this debut, and in general really like The Chemical Brothers.
Leave Home Chemical Beats Life Is Sweet
It takes a great song to get me excited about ED music. Personally I didn’t find any on this album. Hard to rate cause I’m just not into this genre.
Their later stuff is definitely better
Situational album for me. Since I stopped rocking bombers in abandoned Halifax warehouses I typically throw on the brothers if I have an unpleasant job to do quickly. They have a better album than this - best listened to after 10 hash hot knives staring at two weeks of dishes in an antigonish basement apartment.
oppressively redundant
i like this. good walking album. still trynna figure out if its a good studying album bc it gives me the will to study
Gets a bit grating in places but overall a decently energetic electro album. Great to work or workout to. 3/5
Have a couple of Chemical Brother albums, not this one though. I have heard it I think. As far as electronica/dance music goes, Big Beat ain't my thing. It is cool to hear the drum and bass some prominently though. They have released better than this. 3 Heard before? Maybe Owned: No 19/1001, 19/78 (24%) Will I get? No
C’est quand même bon The Chemical Brothers mais cet album ne m’a laissé ni chaud, ni froid.
Again, just decent background music, but otherwise pretty dull.
Looking forward to hearing this one. I've never listened to The Chemical Brothers before, though I'm familiar with the great music videos that Michael Gondry created for the band. This album cover is pretty sweet, too. Definitely one of my favourites from the list. I know I'm in for a rock/electronic affair, so I may as well just crack this one open. Yeah, not bad. Very of-the-time, though that's far from a complaint. I dig this brand of sample-heavy, bassy electronic music. My only real gripe is that the track durations really dampen the appeal of the music. There's a decent number of things going on with these songs and an admirable level of variety, though that lustre is stretched real thin over it's 49-minute runtime. "Leave Home" goes on for much too long, though it's a pretty decent listen. That warm, reverberating guitar during the bridge sections is killer, and I like those sweet drum breaks and atmospheric, electronic sounds, too. "Three Little Birdies Down Beats" is quintessential 90s electronic. The rave sounds are pretty neat, and I enjoy how the track continually lays on the pressure. "Chico's Groove" is pretty cool. More of those bassy, ambient sounds, and I enjoy the cosmic atmosphere. The softer tones at the beginning and end of the track are interesting, too. I quite liked them. Book time. Influential within it's genre. Charted well. Yeah, I'm favourable to this pick. The sound is pretty distinct, and it appears to have a solid critical and commercial backing. I cosign this inclusion.
First 6 songs are good. The first song is chad. 2nd half is 🍑
I liked it. Despite my deep aversion of trance music I think this one as a unique attempt at it. The live Song to Siren was a nice nod to the 1990's rave scene with what I presume to be a full rendition with improve laid on in some respect. Life is Sweet featured Tim Burgess from the Charlatans, great tight groove with light lofty melodies. I liked that one the most. Despite only my 3 start ranking, this one is a good heady trip through modern love at the hand of trance tunes. Dig it.
I thought I liked The Chemical Brothers more than I did this album. They’re from the UK, right? Maybe I’ll like the other 60 albums of theirs on this list better. It’s not as good as Madvillainy.
Ok just not my style
As far as electronica albums go, this really wasn't so bad!
This was entertaining enough for background music while I was busy, but wasn’t keeping my interest when I was paying better attention.. decent beats that seem to fit what I remember was popular at the time. 3/5
Of the two big "Big Beat" groups, i.e, The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy, I've always preferred The Prodigy on ridiculousness factor alone. But the "chunkiest drums" award has always gone to TCB for me. The drum arrangements and mixing are easily the best part of their music, and the best part of this otherwise rudimentary debut. 'Cause yeah, admittedly this is nowhere near as good as their follow-up and magnum opus 'Dig Your Own Hole', but it still manages to kick ass in its own way. The opener was pretty solid, though it sounded like a lesser version of 'Block Rockin' Beats' at times. But it's really the run in the second half that won me over after a pretty underwhelming first half. 'Chemical Beats' was your typical adrenaline-pumping, funky sample-based, crunchy loud drum-machine TCB song, while the following 'Chico's Groove' and especially the serene and sublime 'One Too Many Mornings' go in a much softer direction. Honestly, that latter song was as close as you can get to proto-vapor wave or Clams-Casino-type cloud rap in the mid-'90s. 'Playground For a Wedgeless Firm' was also pretty neat, a beat that sounds like if EL-P produced a Memphis horrorcore song. So yeah, not the most consistently enjoyable (though honestly super sonically consistent) album out there, but there were certainly some highlights here and some genuinely cool moments.
Føles som å vær på klubben i en Blade film.
Great background music and some excellent beats. Nicely produced. It did get a bit samey after a few songs, although I guess predictability is something this genre relies on. Docked it a star on that basis.
Heavy beats to start with, but felt it dipped after that.
Likely won’t listen often. But I did enjoy this.
Started out so hyper strobe light 90s rave again I felt like I was in the movie Go. It calmed down found some grooves but it was background music. Innovative, creative but background music.
Could be an alternate soundtrack for The Matrix. Vocals jumpscare near the end (best track in the album).
More 90s British electronica. While this is arguably on the upper echelon of my enjoyment scale for electronic music I can still never get into it fully. I will concede that each track feels unique, unlike an artist like Aphex Twin, who's entire discography seems to blend into one endless, unlistenable drone of ambience. This is dance music which is actually danceable, which is something I cannot say for other dance albums i've listened to (hello orbital :))
If I were in my 20s, out all night at raves, I’d be shouting four stars without hesitation. But today, I’m more observer than participant.
Kinda good but also uninteresting
FAT BOY SLIM VIBE
3- Stars (7/15)
Don’t worry, that was the music, not me, coming through in that last review. Honestly. I’m fine. Chemical Brothers, no comparison. 2.5/5, rounded up because I like some of their other stuff
I get it, crate digging sample kajiggering is no less creative than writing a new melody verse chorus verse. A record with practically no performed recordings. Progressively it gets into molecular gastronomy where flavor dissolves into a chemical equation. These guys got a lot better at the alchemy later on.
The impetus for a lot of bomb tracks in the electro dance world. Thanks UK!
This was ok. I liked the beats but they got a bit repetitive It did pass the time while I was painting furniture though so 🤷🏻♀️ 3 ⭐️
Favorite Track: Alive Alone
Decent stuff here but they don’t even come close to Underworld for me. 3/5
Yeah, canny fine, I can't believe this is on the list though? I wouldn't have given Chems the plaudits except for Dig Your Own Hole?
Only beats
This is Scooby Doo chase music. That early 2000’s action movie club scene music. Not bad honestly just got boring towards the end.
Me agrada a ratos, pero no sé escuchar esta música
Great to listen to while working, but overall just not really my vibe.
First half was great, second half lulled and despite my attempts to lock in, this insisted upon becoming background music. I enjoy electronica but can't say this album rocked my world.
нет ностальгичных треков, поэтому в целом дискотехно не пробуждает ничего во мне
An ok background sound kinda album. Not one I would go back to. 6/10.
Was alright, but not something I would listen to every day
I’ll rate it a 3/10 good vibes for a function some 90s edm type shi
As good as this style of music can be, it trys to be varied and interesting but in the end feels so similar and long.
No thank you this time again. Not for me
solidno i ugodno za pozadinu, ne smeta, nije moj đir, al ničim me ne vrijeđa, neki momenti fora
-i listened to this shortly after being introduced to The Chemical Brothers through Dig Your Own Hole, which honestly sounded very similar to this album here. i don’t think it’s bad, but i guess it’s kinda hard for me to get into how repetitive and samey it sounds -don’t get me wrong. tons of bops on here. it was great to have on in the background while i cleaned my room but that’s about it -Favorites are Leave Home and Chemical Beats
This was tough. The sound is pretty cool, but a couple of the song felt ultra similar and it took me a loooong time to get through. Kept having to take breaks and walk away from it. I don’t think it was just the lack of lyrics. I don’t know. Something was missing for me. Sometimes I wanted to give it a 2, I’d really hoped to give it a 4… so I guess a weird 3.
Nije ovo na razini dig your own hole ili surrender ali je fora
Well, some nice beats but in the end very conform over album length.
Gets a little repetitive after a bit and I went looking for music with lyrics. I think it would be great background music for playing video games though.
I guess it was okay enough. Kinda just had it as background music while doing some cooking
Very 90s in vibe, but they kinda helped make that vibe a thing.
Very good background music- but still background music.
Reminds me of late 90s action movies
Cool
Great for what it is but not quite as good as I remember it being.
Fairly interesting production, this type of music just tends to blur for me and a lot of the songs were just there
Eh
There are tracks that don't irritate the shit out of me,.~the first half. I do like these guys typically, but not for such a duration.
For the genre I guess this is pretty good. Not my go to when I'm looking for something to spin, but not something I feel the need to turn off when it's on. There is some good stuff in here, for certain, but my ability to ascertain the skill of musicianship or production in this is pretty limited. Sounds good enough to me, if I'm not trying to calm myself down anyway.
Just reviewed KLF - The White room album yesterday, and gave that a (maybe generous) 5 star rating. On paper this album should be very similar to that, and should also fit me very well. I’m not sold though, and here is why. This album is too drums focused and almost resembles some slow bpm version of drum n bass at some points, which I am not a fan of at all. In general it has quite weak basslines and leads, nothing that interesting. It sounds a bit like boring The Prodigy at times. It had some ok songs here and there, but nothing that exciting. A bit of a letdown generally. Cool band and record name, but nothing that blew me away.
first listen big beat is so cinematic
Glad to see The Chemical Brothers make the list. Exit Planet Dust is a fun album and fine entry point for making electronica more mainstream. Props to The Chemical Brothers for popularizing the genre in the 90's. Even if they have some superior work later in their discography Exit Planet Dust is still gem of a release and great debut effort. It fizzles a bit by the end of Side B, but there is more than enough on this to carry it through as a solid entry. 3.33 stars
Sehr elektronisch. Gefällt auf seine Art.
Solid album. Really enjoy their approach to EDM
Oh, hey, these are the guys that made “Galvanize”. I hear that song everywhere. If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it 1000 times, Electronica is never going to be unenjoyable for me to listen to. This is a little basic, nothing spectacularly out of the ordinary, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Sick beats to rock your head to and make the work day go by super fast, as is usual for the genre. However, I’m going to give this one a 3 because I don’t think any favorites easily jumped out at me. Nothing that made me really say, “Damn, that kicked ass.” Nevertheless, still an enjoyable experience. It’s like a 3.4.
buiten de singles was de rest instant skipbaar
Well, that was different. This album was pretty decent, but I’d say it was bogged down by one major flaw. The first three songs, Leave Home, In Dust We Trust, and Song to The Siren, were all musically interesting, with good use of effects and beats. Song to The Siren really caught my ear with its ethereal sounding electronic backing vocals. But the album seemed to hit a wall at Three Little Birdies Down Beats. This song, and the two songs following it all sounded the same to me, and curbed the interest I had in the first couple songs. The album sounded good, but it didn’t really catch my ear after that. Not a bad album, but besides the first three songs, nothing I would really go back to.
2.5/5
Very interesting stuff
Hadn’t heard this one before but was quite familiar with the follow-up having owned a copy around the time of its release. I think this one i
Most of the stuff on here is better than their hits. Enjoyed listening to it whilst working. Leave home is a banger. I understand that the repetitiveness is part of the genre however it does get a little tiresome after a while
I like a lot of later Chemical Brothers singles, so I think I was expecting to enjoy this more than I did. I've ended up with no real strong feelings about it either way, other than the low noise in Three Little Birdies Down Beats that sounded like someone was hammering on the door and made me feel weirdly anxious. It's the first album in a while that I ended up listening to the morning after because I had a couple of false starts, but I liked the second half better than the first. 3/5
I can dig it, although some parts can become a bit repetetive. 3/5
