81% Best: Leave Home; Three Little Birdies Down Beats; Chico's Groove; Life Is Sweet Must-Hear? Sure
Good
Enjoyable album. I can't help but think that the faster songs are the ones that kick in the a 90s action film when something cool is about to go down.
I loved every track on this on first listen. Another listen diminished it slightly but still a very high 4.
Relentless fum, tickles the same part of my brain as good trance.
great background music
If I was on mandy it would be a 5 Favourites - Leave Home, In Dust We Trust, Chemical Beats, Life Is Sweet
A great album, feels aimed for the clubs. I like what they eventually morphed into better, but this is a solid album. An actual score of 3.5 would be apt
Not usually a big fan of EDM, but this album is pretty great.
Kraftwerk was a good lead into this.
The first half of this album is a blast and has the feel of one of their live sets from the time. In the second half they obviously want to be taken more seriously as musicians (vocal tracks, more chill out tunes), but are less convincing as a result. The first six tracks are 5 star but the gloss taken off my the second half a tad.
Album goes so hard and carrys a ton of energy. Feels like a tracklist for an old Playstation game. Transitions between songs are amazing. Novelty wore off a bit about halfway through. 4 album
The beats are huge. You dont know how innovative these drums were
inspiring musical paysages
All the ingredients of their later albums are here: the tight, euphoric grooves, the Britpop cameos, the final comedown track. It's not quite as polished or confident as the follow-up albums, but it makes up for it with sheer innovation and charm.
I feel that the big problem I have with electronica is that it feels like background music. The type of music that is solely “set it and forget it”. This album, however, isn’t background music. It’s a soundtrack. This music doesn’t recede, but enhances activities. It doesn’t matter if it’s driving home from, exercising, or staring at a wall. It’s hard to resist the bopping nature of these tracks. Some of the tracks might sound a bit similar to one another. That’s kind of a genre issue than an artist issue. But consider the Chemical Brothers on my radar. Hope to see more stuff from them on here. Favorite track: Life is Sweet Other hits: Leave Home, Chico’s Groove, Song to the Siren, Alive Alone, Chemical Beats, In Dust We Trust
I liked this a hell of a lot better than I was expecting, especially when it got meaty beaty, big... maybe not bouncy. Seriously, I loved the dirty sound. (8.85) ★★★★
Big Beat is my favourite type of electronica, and I like this quite a lot. 4 stars
A very solid debut from the Chem Bros filled variously with cool head-bobbing grooves, general cool trancey danciness, cooly cool chill out sections, cooler than thou futuristic racing game background beats and towards the end even a couple of actual song highlights with the baggytastic Life Is Sweet featuring Tim Burgess and sweeping majestic closer Alive Alone featuring cool Dido clone Beth Orton… which is cool. The main thing keeping this from a 5 is that their next album Dig Your Own Hole is even more of a cooler, fantastic big beaty beast that has better tunes and hits way harder. Another way to make this album better is if it were called Exit Planet Rust and Neil Young appeared on a track to say “yep, gonna retire. Not gonna sing anymore. And I’m gonna delete half my albums because I got too many of them”.
Not usually my kind of music, but I went for a walk while listening to this and I was walking on sunshine. I enjoyed this album and really liked the driving rhythm section.
Great rave music
Classic Chemical Brothers techno album
So groovy and good, I’ll probably make the style of music if I was in the 90’s.
I already really like The Chemical Brothers but I had never heard this album. I am pleased to report it's a goodie!
genuinely loving this. I don't know if it's ground breaking and I don't think it's the soundtrack to the revolution, but sometimes my brain just wants to latch on to that thing where it goes doom doom doom doom and then that other weedy weedy weedle wit wee wee part happens and then the doom doom drops out and you're like where did the doom doom go but it the doom doom comes back because the music knows what you want
Fun album, would definitely listen to this one again and I'll be going back into the rest of their catalogue too. Always liked Dig Your Own Hole by these guys, I need to listen to it more often.
😚
Not the most exciting Electronica, but still enjoyable enough to give it a second listen.
Really good grooves / energy. Not something I would seek out, but enjoyable to listen to. Good background for working.
Call it electronica or big beat, the sub genre from the mid to late 90s certainly had a lot of forgettable acts. A handful, like the Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk, found the right formula though. Synths, bass and beats weren't quite enough. The music needed a heavy tribute to the past to give it more character. The Chemical Brothers knew how to make it work with elements of psychedelic rock, funk, and hip hop all mixed in for variety. Even their artwork from the period recalled a different era, picked from unused 70s stock photos to feel more classic and also more human than most of their contemporaries. Their first hit, "Song to Siren" found a home on dance floors, but what's great about "Exit Planet Dust" is that it works so well outside of the club setting. Some of their best songs work best as radio-friendly pop songs, like "Life is Sweet" or their frequent collaborations with Beth Orton. This is an impressive debut and really survives the test of time better than you might expect.
A great example of how dance/electronic music was evolving in the UK during the mid 90's. Took me right back to those years. In doing so it made me feel fucking old.
Push The Button is one of my favourite electronic dance albums OAT. So this was interesting as I've never visited the roots of The Chemical Brothers. As soon as it played, I knew is love this album. And by God, I did. Fave Songs: - Leave Home (guys I think the brother might be the one working it out..??) - Three Little Birdies Down Beat (this gave me Prodigy vibes ngl and that's why I loved it) - Fuck Up The Beats (great Interlude if it is?!) - Chemical Beats - Life Is Sweet - Alive Alone (this weirdly feels like late 90s early 00s)
I totally forgot about this album. It was so much fun to listen to it again. BANGER. This was the first electronic show I had ever been to. It was Chicago, I was in college and there was quadrophonic sound, they "don't do" encores.
Pretty nice; solid mix of tracks; 4/5
Did a good job of utilizing loops without becoming annoyingly repetitive
I don’t listen to a lot of electronic music but, this album was not bad. I liked how it started out really heavy and then mellowed out at the end. It’s one of those albums that needs to be listened to from start to finish.
Great album
8/10. Loved the transitions and vibes.
Can’t believe this album is 40 years old! It holds up well
one of my favourite Chemical Brothers albums ❤️ Alive Alone is brilliant
fire album
Enjoyed this way more than I expected to, given my track record with electronic, beat-focused albums. "Song to the Siren" is super cool. Dynamic, bottom-heavy, and dark.
this is not normally the kind of music i listen to in my own time, but i enjoyed myself! i might even add some tracks to my running playlist because they have a good drive behind them. the final track with the kind of folksy melody mixed with electronica is a cool concept
Good stuff.
A likely grower
Nice wel
Are they making club music a little less clubby by infusing more live rocking? I do appreciate that and will rate a 4 so that I reinvestigate at some point.
Really cool album... I was cleaning listening to it and it was so funny and amazing... I gave me so much energy...
Fast paced, bass thumping Beats to make your body bob With a swirl of chill
gotta admit…i do really like this big beat stuff
"leave Home" gehört zu den fantastischen Songs , die einen unglaublichen tollen Beginn haben. Mich hat dieses elektronische Album total mitgenommen, auch wenn es immer wieder ähnlich klang. Störte aber nicht. Wieder eine tolle Gruppe entdeckt.
Apparently I like The Chemical Brothers. Didn't know that.
Probably still my favourite Chemical Brothers album, even after all these years. A true pillar of 90s UK electronica. The better-known tracks are great of course, some mash up between house, big beat, with an indie influence and something new at the time and quite distinctively British. Some of my favourites though are little off-piste moments like the drop on Three Little Birdies Down Beats, of the clank of Playground. All told, awesome.
Impulsively grabbed for candy necklace. I feel parched.
Thanks for having this on the list. I haven’t listened to this in almost 30 years. Used to get home from work late at 9pm, veg out watching my roommate playing video games listening to this (and Prodigy), then going to bed and waking up at 5am to go back to work. Feel I can appreciate this more. Brings back memories.
I really like this surprisingly, Chico's groove especially. One Too Many Mornings is so good. LIFE IS SWEET!!!!
pretty good
Decent debut album. Nice EDM with good beats and rhythms. One plus for the Kraftwerk sample.
Surprisingly solid listen.
Any Chemical Brothers album is a guaranteed great listen. Big beat American electronica. Does feel like them finding their feet on their first album though. Standouts: Leave Home, Three Little Birdies Down and One Too Many Mornings
OH MY GOD I DID IT I WENT BACK IN TIME TO THE 90S
Really liked this...would listen to it again.
Enjoyed this one quite a bit but not as much as I thought I would.
a good one, if you like nineties electronic
Awesome club music. I need to buy this album
Nice ambient sound with a driving beat. Enjoyable listen!
Almost perfect techno, only a few songs that kinda stray from the path detract from it
certain this rages in the club but it's no DJ Sabrina 8/10
It's just good Big Beat club music. Interesting to see where they started. The first half of the album is definitely weaker than the second half though imo.
Loved it. Kept me awake while doing inventory.
The perfect soundtrack for mindless, repetitive works tasks on a Friday morning.
Trippy
This is such great 'get up and go' music. Between this and The Prodigy it's no wonder I got so much done in the late 90s. It still has the same effect today, until you get to those last few more vocal songs, where it sort of loses its way. My house hasn't looked this clean and tidy in weeks.
Bought this when it came out. Still sounds good
Definitely not what I was expecting based on the cover, but it was a pleasant surprise. This was a very solid album, full of bangers Favorites: "Leave Home", "In Dust We Trust", "Alive Alone"
Big Beat. Repetitive samples, hypnotic soundscapes. A good album to get lost in without really losing the enjoyment. I thought it was really good but I really have to be doing something, hard to actively listen to. 3.5/5
4/5. A solid electronic album where a personality is being formed in the songs. A more optimistic viewpoint from the samples and sounds, and a skill to portray that emotion without lyrics is definitely a skill. A start of a good relationship between the group members. There is not anything that stands out for me, and some of the songs don't keep me invested for their length time but I wouldn't say it's bad, I appreciate the experimentation at least, always love new ideas. Just would rather listen to a more mature album of theirs, still a solid listen. Best Song: Chico's Groove, Life Is Sweet, Leave Home
Pretty enjoyable through and through.
Wow, killer techno with relentless energy. Lots of propulsive, driving beats. Perfect for a workout or soundtracking a Matrix movie. There are a few melodic tunes mixed in here too. All around excellent.
Yes, the Chemical Brothers. I haven't listened to the album for a long time. It's time to change that. I can still remember the songs well. However, they are currently too hot and sweaty for me in this hot weather. 4/5
This genre is just cool man. I love all the tracks on here, they all have great vibes and nothing makes me even think about skipping. With all that said it's STILL recognizable compared to other stuff in the genre. Great stuff.
Drivin, thumpin, head-banging good electronic music. Makes you want to dance, drive fast, and groove to the beat as it shakes your entire existence. It's no surprise that there is a sub-genre of electronic music called trance because that's exactly what it does - just an easy, enjoyable way to lose yourself in the music.
I loved this album, great backgound music to move your head to and work through your day. Great electronic album. Favourite song: Leave home and in dust we trust Least favourite: All good tracks Album artwork: amazing cover
FAVO:In dust we trust, Three little birdies down beats, Chemical Beats, One too many mornings
Earlier ventures into electro were always superior in my mind, mostly because the genre can get stale after a while, this record being no exception. Still, if you’re standing up and have 5-10 feet of clearance, you’re going to lose control of your body when listening for the first time.
Super cool EDM/techno club beats! Every track rocks on its own, but also flows as one continues rave. Great soundtrack for parties, workouts, chores, long drives, tripping with a nice set of headphones, or just walking around feeling like you're in the Matrix. These guys were ahead of their time and shaped much that followed. Still feels fresh after 30 years.
Exciting stuff, even if I'm more into their later work.
6/27/24. Although I'm familiar with the Chemical Brothers, I haven't dug too much into their music. After listening to this, this feels like classic Big Beat. But also loved the variet: fast, slow, upbeat, chill, while exploring interesting sounds. Will be in the rotation!
Geggjuð plata. Sést alveg hvað þeir eru að fara út í. Frábær og aðgengileg tekknó tónlist.
Not their greatest, still big
While none of the tracks really stood out, I had a good time with this album. It’s been a while since I’ve had this type of edm on this list and since this is a debut hopefully surrender, their most popular album, is still ahead. Just checked my history and I also got their sophomore album and totally forgot about it. I relistened to a bit of it and honestly it basically sounded exactly the same as this one but for some reason I’m enjoying dog your own hole more. Might just need more time to pass in between both albums.
I dig the Chemical Brothers and that is why I know that the album of theirs that blew everyone's minds and that should be heard before you die is DIG YOUR OWN HOLE, not this one. This is good, but DIG YOUR OWN HOLE was great. That is only reason I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5. My favorites on this album include "Leave Home", "Song to the Siren", "Three Little Birdies Down Beats", "Chemical Beats", "One Too Many Mornings", "Life is Sweet", and "Alive Alone".
I used to like this album a lot, and beforehand I expected to give it a straightforward 5 stars, but after re-listening I'm not so sure. The first two tracks feel like a long dj set without much variation, but then a passage kicks in that still hits hard with four tracks of great beats. The last tracks of the album feel a bit more like songs, with some vocal parts and stuff. I'll settle for four stars.
Very enjoyable techno music.
Not bad! I somehow like them and this records is proof that they know what they are doing.
Boomtastic
01) Leave Home - 9,0 02) In Dust We Trust - 7,5 03) Song to the Siren - 7,5 04) Three Little Birdies Down Beats - 7,5 05) Fuck Up Beats - 7,0 06) Chemical Beats - 7,5 07) Chico's Groove - 8,0 08) One Too Many Mornings - 9,0 09) Life Is Sweet - 8,5 10) Playground for a Wedgeless Firm - 7,5 11) Alive Alone - 8,5 TOTAL: 7,95 (80/100) Current ranking: 79/201 It starts with the excellent "Leave Home" and continues fiercely in the same rhythm. And just when you think you've had enough of electronic beats, the second, more relaxed part of the album begins with the magnificent "One Too Many Mornings". The Chemical Brothers are truly masters of their craft.
I saw the Chemical Brothers live in 2001 while under the influence of some sweet London X. Don’t remember much of the concert but I heard echoes of it in this album.
I’m really not a fan of club music but this was pretty rockin’. Not sure I would ever put this on and listen to it on a regular basis but had some interesting stuff. Seems like this would be great music for a movie or tv show soundtrack.
Exit Planet Dust came out at a time when the whole big beat genre was still mostly hiding underground and brought it to the mainstream. Hugely important and influential and also a lot of fun to listen to. They really soar with their collaborations and it's Beth Orton and Tim Burgess who take this album to another level. It's iconic and truly brilliant.
What a surprise this album was. Another group U had heard of but really knew nothing about. While I find a lot of elecronica repetitive and unengaging, this album was just the opposite. The beats, rhythms and melodies flowed well This iis the kind of album that one can put on, kick back and be taken on a musical journey. The last song "Alive Alone", was notable.
Cool stuff. It does dip a bit in the back half but this is a solid listen. Brings back some good memories. Head bopped during a number of these tracks.
Acid house. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Quite chemically indeed. 7/10
A lot of noises that came together in a way I didn’t expect to work.
Very driving game soundtrack!
Excellent
Sonido inconfundible.
Surprisingly mellow
Way more than expected! I can definitely see coming back to this one -- for Leave Home if nothing else
There's nothing that special about it to me except that it conjures up nostalgia for 90's action and hacking and drug culture. Which a lot of the time is an automatic five stars.
Nice electro album
I get like I was in an album length chase scene from the first Bourne movie
So having listened to a few electronica albums I'm concluding I'm just not that into the genre, but Chemical Brothers is the exception. I'm not sure what it is about them, but the grooves are great -- rhythm and basslines are key with some smart melodic riffs -- and repetitions of patterns and textures are varied enough to keep my attention whereas other artists feel like they linger too long in something. I think vocal samples that are not prominent repeats and are kind of more obscured into the background probably help. Favorites are Leave Home, Chemical Beats, Chico's Groove, and Life Is Sweet.
Man this made for great working music
Nearly missed this but got it manually and glad I did. Lots of oomph & energy
Loved this album. Dope sounds!
Exceptional album. The chemical brothers were ahead of their time
big phatt beats that despite being loud are quite easy on the ears, super tight and super cool. even as a fan of the genre and these guys in general though, i can't say this is the best album i've heard from them, as most tracks stick out but there's a few scattered about that i couldn't care about as much. still though, if you're looking for expertly crafted big beat sounds, this is a good pick.
Fuckin fuck ya! Where's the molly?
love the chemical brothers, good listen. diverse sounds.
The brothers gonna work it out. Chemical, not Dust.
Exit Planet Dust by the Chemical Brothers (formerly the Dust Brothers). They're a UK electronic duo who were such fans of the Dust Brothers (American group who produced the Beastie Boys beats) that they stole their name wholesale. They later got threatened out of it and rebranded to Chemical Brothers, but honestly I think they lived up to the stature of the Dust Brothers. If you like sample-based boom-bappy electronic music with cool synths then you will love this album. It also transitions perfectly between almost every song. It's mostly 90s club bangers with occasional slow spots for you to catch your breath. That's pretty much the sound - it's like you're there in some London club for the best electronic set you'd ever hear in Europe before Daft Punk invented music a few years later. Shit bangs.
I always find myself struggling to rate albums that are more about vibe than songwriting. But I liked this album, even if it faded into background music for me more often than not. I think you need to take into account the precedent this albums was setting for artists who came later: Daft Punk, Air, and Holy Fuck all feel like they exist as direct responses to the stylings of this album.
Knowing almost absolutely nothing about electronic or techno music, I can say I really enjoyed this. The first half is better than the second. Really fun grooves, good use of sound samples. Could easily lock in while listening and get some work done. Almost trance like at times. Can’t really say much else not being a techno person. Standout tracks: Leave Home, In Dust We Trust, Three Little Birdies Downbeat, Fuck Up Beats, Life is Sweet
Some tracks are interesting for me. Some too electronics
Excellent album. Bought it when it came out played it to death
i liked this so much more than i thought i would
Great office music - had my grooving while working at the standing desk.
Honestly a very fun album, not my typical genre but it just made me feel bouncy and full of energy. Auditory caffeine. Good tracks, never boring, solid from start to finish.
Some bangers on this 4/5 Chemical Beats is still a banger!
Ren memory lane!
I came in fully expecting to dislike this album, it essentially being a set of electronic dance tracks – and, worse, 90s electronic dance. However, this was actually executed pretty well. The tracks are a little repetitive and cling strongly to certain chords and rhythms, but those motifs are very catchy and manage to avoid getting irritating. Already, this lifts the album above nearly all of its annoying little brothers of the same genre. Couple that with the fantastic track transitions, high energy, and ability to be listened to both closely and in the background, and you have a really solid end result.
Liked it—brash and confident. Can’t believe it’s nearly 30 years old!
BL: The Chemical Brothers are a personal favourite 90s EDM choice for me, after The Prodigy of course. This style of 90s dance music just isn’t the same anymore, the switch from analogue destroyed a certain tone that was present I believe; anyways I’ve never listened to a Chemical Brothers album the whole way through but I’ll be interested to. AL: As I suspected, an album full of classics. While the drops are a little bit similar from time to time, considering the limitations of the technology and how early into the Brothers' career this was I think it can be excused. Some of the vocals were particularly cool, giving more of an Acid-House sound to it all. Overall, a lot more diversity than your standard 90s EDM album. It's not quite "Fat of the Land", but it's certainly somewhere close. FT: "Song to the Siren", "Life is Sweet", "Playground of a Wedgeless Firm", "Alive Alone" 4/5
Kovaa acid tekno biitti ysäri britti toiminta leffa musiikkia. Kuullostaa taas kevyemmältä Prodigylta. Parhaat: In Dust We Trust, Chemical Beats
A very cohesive electronic album that manages to be both energetic and atmospheric in different places while still flowing perfectly throughout. There’s not really a stand out single anywhere and it would maybe be a more memorable experience with one or two of those, but at the end of the day it’s a very impressive debut
Cool album, incredible for work or workouts. My experience with electronic music is pretty much Daft Punk, so this was an interesting change of pace.
A couple of greats and the rest are good listening. If it had like one or two more stand outs it might have gotten a 5
Very 90s electronic music, but I def dig the sound. Very nostalgic. Plus it’s just good.
Fajny, dobry do pracy
Like the style. Should listen more to this Genre. Reminds me a bit of prodigy in some song sequencies! Personal top3 in no order: Leave Home In Dust We Trust Alive Alone
This was so cool and groovy. I loved the experimental sounds and heavy beats!
Love me some Chemical Bros. The list just doesn't miss with the 90s electronic
dosta dobro
Not as fresh sounding as it was in the day, but still one of the Chemicals' better albums (they're a classic case of "I like your old stuff better than the new"). The second half of the album is m-u-c-h better than the first, though. In my opinion, with this album and its followups the band established the genre.
Like the chemical brothers, Hanna soundtrack is the best
Man, I really liked this. At least at first. There's so much going on here and it's all quite skillfully performed and even more skillfully mixed. Sure, it's electronic so it's going to get repetitive but, you know, sometimes that works. And, then again, sometimes it doesn't. This was on track for a 5-star review for the first several songs. Then I hit "Three Little Birdies Down Beats" which was so mind-numbingly repetitive and went on for a maddening 5:38. And it's not the only over-long track. Several of these songs overstay their welcome. Cut 'em all down to 4 minutes and you've got an easy 5-star album here. As it is, I was more annoyed than impressed by the end. Not that there aren't killer tracks here. "Leave Home", "In Dust We Trust", and "One Too Many Mornings" are incredible and keep this album at 4-stars easily.
"Exit Planet Dust" is the debut album by electronic music duo the Chemical Brothers. Big beat, electronica, pyschedelia and acid house. Well, definitely big beat. The Chemical Brothers are Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons who were formerly known as the Dust Brothers but had to change their name which led to the the title of this album. The album stayed on the UK charts for a long time (charting sometime each year from 1995 to 2000) and peaked at #9. Heavy synth pounding opens "Leave Home." A funky guitar. The beat comes in. Random laser sounds. Good sampling of Blake Baxter's "Brothers Goona Work it Out." This rocks pretty hard. A Dead Can Dance sample starts "Song to the Siren." A normal melody. Various sounds..sirens, rattling. The beat changing throughout. They uses synths sounding like guitars in "Chemical Beats." Bombs dropping sounds. The song builds up intensity to get a payoff..a common tactic used in current EDM shows (that I've seen). "One Too Many Mornings" has wobbly synths and more of a pop beat. Excellent sampling of two Swallow songs for the melody. Very chill and a nice song. We're back to the heavy beats in "Life Is Sweet." The Charlatans UK's Tom Burgess in lead vocals. Hypnotic synth songs and the closest song to a traditional pop song on the album. The guest lead vocals don't end there as the album closes with "Alive Alone" and Beth Orton. The beat is slower with a nice sounding melody. Hey, this juxtaposition of Beth Orton and electronic music works. This album is mostly all about the beats. But, it's funky and rocks hard at times. It's also hypnotic and uses that previously mentioned current EDM tactic of building, building, building to the musical payoff. The guest vocalists song change the pace. I think mostly everyone would like this album to some extent especially those into electronic music who probably already label as landmark status.
Nice pop edm from the 90s.
Great album to get you in the mood for a night out. I really enjoyed the drum tracks with a constant beat making you want to bounce up and down. Really enjoyed this
Significantly better on headphones, best listened to in the middle of the night
Probably just the nostalgia of teenage years full of promise and hopes and dreams, but the late 90's really were awesome weren't they?
Didn't think of like this so much. Alive Alone was a standout.
Really great mixing from a style I never really listen to. A bit long but a fun listen
This is the second Chemical Brothers album that I've gotten and I've enjoyed this one even more than the first (which I gave 3/5). The beats were awesome and it was easy to get into the music. I will be checking out more of their work in the future.
Pretty sweet rave tunes
I’ve liked everything I’ve ever heard by Chemical Brothers but I’ve never given their albums much of a listen. This debut feels rough around the edges but sketches the long, influential road before them. And, being the first, this may prove the most influential. But I’d say it lacks cohesiveness. More a palette to get future fans—some who may very well be previously foreign to EDM—ready for what may come. For what it lacks in cohesion, it makes up for in vision. I particularly liked the closing 5 tracks beginning with “Chico’s Groove.” They felt a bit spacier, more inclined to crossover, more melodic (without sacrificing any them block rock’n beats), and just overall seemed to gel together better. I’ll round up to 4 for the strong open, finish, and influence.
This was actually awesome. I've been overly harsh to 90s breakbeat albums in past reviews here. This one totally grabbed me beginning to end. Very danceable, very easy to work to in the background, just really grabby and interesting. And some actual... songs?... peppered in there? This is my breakbeat-hacker-man-in-some-unfinished-downtown-loft-hacking-shit album. I will put it on in such conditions. 4/5
I liked this more than most things like this. This screams 90s to me. Mostly I don't remember any of it, but the energy was good. I did really like the song Life is Sweet though. I'll bump it by .25 just for that song. 3.5/5
This has aged well, great album
Enjoyed this!
Pretty chill album, no stand out tracks, but a vague urge to play Wipeout all the way through listening. I own this album already, but it's not one I listened to a lot back in the day, as it was always a bit too mellow and slow for me. It sounds a little better now after a gap of 20 years or so between listens, a definite four. Notably, I have quite a few Chemical Brothers tracks liked on Spotify, but not a single one of them is from this album. Greater things were to come on future releases and the sound here is a bit raw and samey.
Felt like a Jet Set Radio album, dug this one!
This is not the typical recommendation you get when you ask for Chemical Brothers... However, it is a solid debut. The first half is more active with songs like "Leave Home" and "In Dust We Trust"; the second half is more chilled with things like "Chico's Groove" and "Alive Alone." I really enjoyed this album. It is neither pretentious nor shallow. It delivers the "value prop" of this famous Big Beat band solidly. I can see clearly how it influenced other acts such as The Crysta Method, Groovy Armada, or Basement Jaxx.
Some big epic tracks here, great composition throughout. A few have dated slightly, but very much enjoyed this. 3.5 Fav track: three little birdies down beats
A tough one to grade from listening to it on the commute - a record like this is so much about energy and context. That said, this was more than engaging enough to keep me jamming along, and I'd absolutely get it going for a groove. Some great beat switches, nice variety, dated - but mostly in a good way. Fave track: Song to the Siren
Solid beats and great production - packed with party bangers, and the more chilled tracks sprinkled in there got me good too. Driving to work on a cold morning probably isn’t the setting for this, but I enjoyed the listen regardless and had a lot of fun. Maybe no track in particular elevating this to a really terrific record, but still a lot to like. Three and a half. Fave track: Alive Alone
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Leave home, Chemical beats
7/10 nothing too special, but definitely fun vibes and generally enjoyable
Great high energy background music
Lots of movie soundtracks but not really good music to listen to casually
I can't rate this 5, as then where would Dig Your own Hole go? But this is a very solid 4, with a very clever downtempo feel to side 2 after the dancefloor action of side 1.
This is a foundational big beat album. It is brash, in your face, yet has a great sense of flow from track to track. Though this isn’t my favorite sub-genre of electronic music, it’s always good to hear the albums that have the greatest influence. I was not impressed at first, but as the album progressed, I began to enjoy it more. Sometimes it’s easy to take music for granted when its once revolutionary sounds become the norm.
- Never listened to a Chemical Brothers album before - Seems like I either love or hate every electronic album that comes up here, luckily this is the former - Not a genre I usually go to, but still really good - Fav songs: Song to the Siren, Three Little Birdies Down Beats, In Dust We Trust
great industrial electronica/dance mixed with a bit of acid house. this is the sound of 90s/early 00s movies when they cut to a rave/dance club. Best: Leave Home Worst: Alive Alone
I don't know why I like this album of "looping electronic bleeps and bloops" more than the dozen other "looping electronic bleeps and bloops" albums this generator has thrown at me. There's some black magic fuckery going on here. My brain has been properly tickled and I feel violated. 4/5
New Forms
This is pretty hype. I like it. In my opinion, for this type of music, the closer it comes to the Mortal Kombat Motion Picture Soundtrack the better.
I really liked this, was always a fan of the hits of the Chemical Brothers but had never dived into an album. For the dance music of the 90s this was very different - love the breakbeats on this album. English raves in the 90s must have been awesome.
Bangers, init
4+
Love the chemical brothers
Yep, enjoyed this as expected . Reviewing a bit later than listen so not loads to say, but a good one.
A solid album from the golden period of the mid to late 90s where electronic music was at its most fun, melodic, and adventurous.
Solid
The whole album had such a good vibe, electronic music without being too overwhelming. I liked the seamless transitions between most of the songs
fun long electronic music (to drive with, maybe)
It is easy for an album like this to sound overproduced, but it doesn't feel that way at all. I appreciate how you can listen through without feeling like you're listening to a new song. It is cohesive, it feels like a club set, which should be a goal for this genre. I'm not super familiar with the genre overall, but this is surely a revolutionary album. I've not listened to really anything else like it.
so good. this is my introduction to techno, hoping to have a long and happy relationship w/ the genre now!
Some absolutely belting fat beats, this album started strongly but I felt it petered out a bit towards the end, if not for that it would have been 5/5
The brother's gonna work it out...I may be wrong but in the 90s it felt like everyone's collection benefited from a having some of The Chemical Brothers in it somewhere, somehow. They were a cross-over event. This was my first, and not my last. Strong beats, great sounds, deep cuts. In Dust We Trust.
4,5
Super interesting beats and ideas.
For some reason I didn't like the other Chemical Brothers album we had earlier in the list, but really enjoyed this one. May have to give Dig Your Own Hole another listen...
Gott föstudagspartý! Mæli með.
Suoer albun electro jai adore mom ecoute 4.5
Digging holes or exiting some planet. These brothers are the only ones who managed to create electronic music that blew my mind.
Nostalgia for the 90s!
A very pleasant listen. Rawer and less varied than it's follow up, but possibly more enjoyable for the rawness? It squelches in a pleasing manner.
favorite tracks - leave home, in dust we trust, chemical beats, one too many mornings least favorite tracks - alive alone, fuck up beats Love how experimental this album feels. So many different sounds, many of which I recognize in the modern, mainstream electronic music a casual like me has listened to.
transmissions from a lost world
Acid house. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
This album sounds great. The production, the recording quality, really crisp and expansive (and I was listening on earbuds). While this seems to conform to the standard EDM aesthetic (not that I am in any way an expert), The Chemical Brothers have a knack for building an ebb-and-flow into the compositions. I wouldn't call it lyrical, but there's an arc to the songs. That said, is this music anyone actually listens to in album form? I think it was Andy who made the comment (Fatboy Slim review?) that this is music to get people on the dance floor and moving, and I can see that. But I can't imagine deciding to spin this album as something to listen to on its own merit. I also don't understand the album cover as it relates to the music/vibe. Is it wholly ironic? Are they making a statement? Do they hate hippies? Is there an acoustic guitar anywhere in this mix? So, a 4 because it seems like top-notch electronic music. But I don't know that I need to listen to a whole lot more of it in full album format. Just when I'm raving on a packed dance floor, which happens like... Amsterdam 2001.
Loved this. I love electronic music, and I can't believe I've never listened to The Chemical Brothers before.
Too repetitive. Liked some of the music, tho.
Starts strong, but loses some of its luster on the backstretch. Still top-notch big beat goodness, though.
Great techno/dance album
Great hype music. Felt like an action movie soundtrack
Wow, so much 90s electronica lately. I like The Chemical Brothers a lot so today was easy listening for me.
Boss 1990s Mortal Kombat-esque beats
Decent album. Thought it benefited from the change of pace that Chico's Groove and One Too Many Mornings gave it. Think it's one i could listen to again when i'm doing exercise.
Boss album. Felt like going out to warehouse or something. The best act I saw when I last went to Glasto. Ah Glasto…you cruel mistress
Banging album. Banging choons.
Man, there were some “Block Rockin’ Beats” on this! (See what I did there?!)
Expansive and bombastic, slightly confusing at times which I think only adds to the spacey charm of the album. Incredibly inventive and experimental but I feel as though these qualities can also be a detriment to the album and sometimes hinder the catchy-ness of particular tunes. Never the less an oddly mesmerising arrangement of industrial noise.
Not typically my style but I liked it, good study music too
great early electronic. listened to this several times.
Album No.11 - it's also the second album that I got from the Big Beat genre following Fatboy Slim (which was a bit of a let down for me). I liked this one much more - it seems more consistent than FS while at the sine team being much less poppy and hit driven. There’s also less boring moments consisting of deconstructing of beats which annoyed me a lot when listening to FS. Also one more observation: it flows by really fast, I’m always a bit surprised that it’s already over. 4/5
Quality boop.
uh uh
I had a lot of fun with this! Fave tracks were probably "Leave Home," "Chemical Beats," "Song to the Siren," and "Playground for a Wedgeless Firm."
Super into this
This album makes me feel like I'm at a fancy night club in a shadowrun or cyberpunk setting. I'm about to meet my fixer for the first time and due to my social anxiety I just end up staring for too long from across the club. The John eventually sends his heavily cybered orc bodyguard to see what my problem is and get scared and mumble something about how I like his hat then I leave the club. Good vibes on this album
Great sampling and tempo.
Motivational sound for sport or cleaning :D
Not one I’d listen to a lot but really enjoyed it
Not my particular flavor of elec but good. classic.
In Dust we Trust, Leave Home, Chemical Beats are the big bangers from this, b ut the whole album is very listenable to. Some seriously nasty tracks in this one, Song to the Siren is very sweaty nightclub vibes. Varied style throughout, lots of engaging listens and enough variety to keep you guessing. This is a perfect album for focus, be that grinding a game, working, studying, the constancy of the beats, the not too powerful melodic component and the lack of vocals makes this album excellent for filling space in your mind as you work.
Ahhh the late 90s when you went to the club and the same electricity that powered the music seemed to power the dance floor. Not allowing one foot off unless the other made contact. And pulling the head and eyes downward... Good times. Good constant rhythm
More music to listen to while tripping. Yes please
Was a fun album!
This album was a trip! It was interesting and felt mostly fresh, even 20 years later. To that point, it's hard to believe they got electronic music so very right with this album, back in 1995. The overall mood and vibe of this album is exciting and fun. To me, some elements of new age were even present, especially in the closing track, "Alive Alone". Overall, this album was a pleasant surprise, and it really was an absolute vibe.
Yeah! Pretty cool one
Enjoyable
As good as it ever was.
The point where Indie and Dance crossed over. Excellent album.
I was familiar with a lot of these songs going in. A good listen.
Of the electronic albums I've listened to (which is, admittedly, not a lot) this is my favorite. The album is structured more like a rock album, and it sounds as much like the mid 90s as a SoCal ska album would. I'm still not a huge fan of this particular genre, but this album I like.
I first heard this album in high school, probably around 1996-97 and I hadn't heard anything like it before. This was probably due to being to immersed in the post-grunge alternative rock that was popular at the time.
More than decent but of its time and I rarely play it these days.
I fucking love this album. It's music that you can really dance to that somehow feels more meaningful. It's also an absolutely stellar debut album. I think that Dig Your Own Hole is better overall, but this is one not to be missed. Every song works in the context of the album. Big Beat is one of those musical movements that I would have loved to be able to be around when it was in its early days. I'm not sure that Big Beat gets its due with regard to its influence on modern music. So much of what has happened in EDM and hip-hop is using this style as its skeleton. The Chemical Brothers are the best part of that, turning out banger after absolute banger 4/5
Still as good today as it was when it came out.
#2 that I've encountered now in the Big Three of Big Beat, having heard Fatboy Slim prior and expecting The Prodigy to pop up at some point. I wasn't so impressed with Fatboy Slim's work, but I can get behind what The Chemical Brothers are doing with their debut. Layering psychadelic textures over groovy drum breaks, Exit Planet Dust exists in a perpetual party that is dense in soundscape. It's worth noting that Song To The Siren is the first-ever Big Beat song, being released as a single all the way back in 1992. This makes The Chemical Brothers he inventors of Big Beat, essentially, so their debut really cannot be understated. While not their best work, Exit Dust Planet is an important foray into the great club music of the 90's, especially in the UK. Also worth noting that this music is extremely repetitive. Take that as you will.
Fucking great ravey album. Every track is straight fire and they flow through each other so seamlessly. Had a great time listening to it
3/30/2022 Today's Album: "Exit Planet Dust" by The Chemical Brothers - You know how a few reviews ago I was complaining about 2 albums having rather mediocre rapping, but the beat production being fairly good in comparison? Well, this album is like if they just removed the rapping and showcased how cool those beats are, but how stale they get over time. I am not saying it really sounds bad, as the production quality is rather high and a lot of the beats feel really energetic and danceable, but a lot of them after the first 2 tracks, Leave Home and In Dust We Trust, just feel really repetitive and don't really have interesting progressions despite how decent of beats they are. A lot of them also have elements that just drown out the rest of the beat and sound straight up ugly, like on the track Song To The Siren. (Probably intentional now that I think about it). That being said, they still sound like beats that would be fun to get totally lost in at a club on hard drugs and are somewhat enjoyable sober. The track Chemical Beats brings things back a little bit with a really long build up and a pretty solid drop into some added percussion and slightly more beat variation. It isn't a great track to me personally, but I can tell that there is a tad more variety with what it is trying to do. The track Chico's Groove takes a complete left turn and has a really cool synthetic and chilled-out groove to it. It's actually really pleasant to listen to and has a nice variation and bassline throughout. One Too Many Mornings follows this trend of pretty decent tracks, with a really nice chill beat joined by this angelic voice. It captures the feeling of waking up early after a night of partying and trying to start your day. Life Is Sweet is the first track to feature vocals in it, and I actually think this album would have sounded nice with some more. That being said, I enjoy that most of this album is instrumental. It's a pretty great track that leads us into the last 2. Playground For A Wedgeless Firm is kind of a strange noise rock experiment, with this weird descending synth and some horror strings in the back. Kind of weird, but then it leads us into the finisher, Alive Alone, which is another song with vocals, this time being female. It's sort of a spacey outro with lyrics contemplating life and relationships. It's a pretty solid track that ends this record off on a really nice note. Overall, this record really surprised me. I thought a lot of the beats in the beginning were really basic and boring, but the ending really popped off with some awesome material. Check this out if you like club music with some subtle tracks thrown in. Score: 8/10 A slow-burner, but worth it! Highlights: Leave Home, In Dust We Trust, Chico's Groove, One Too Many Mornings, Life Is Sweet, Alive Alone
Nice
This album is a little dated but still a joy to listen to. Beth Orton providing some of the vocals is also A+
Chill beats, pretty 90s electronic, has some nice droning and echoing that makes it less synthetic. I think 4 is pretty genorous but I do quite like this album, and hey, The Brother's gonna work it out!
Great high-energy beats. Difficult to work to.
Loved this album. I had missed Exit Planet dust back when it came out...didn't start listening until Dig Your Own Hole. I think this is now my favorite Chemical Bros release. Love the slowdown songs at the end of the album. 4/5
Great album. Always have loved the brothers. The most melodic of the big electronica bands imo.
Love it!
Loved how the songs were so seamless into one another. 45 minutes of chill dance.
Excellent

There were a couple of songs that were very good. I really like that early EDM sounds.
A brilliant debut that holds up today, a testament to them that they have six albums even better than this
Great album, flows from style to style effortlessly smoothly. It goes a touch hard core dance for me at parts which brings down the rating to 4 but it’s still excellent
I quite liked this. It's not something that you can just sit and listen to, but it sure makes a good, energetic soundtrack to anything you do to it. Electronica, especially without melody or vocals, can sometimes bore me, but I didn't get bored with any of it.
I've been meaning to investigate The Chemical Brothers for a while but hadn't gotten around to it. Glad this project gave me an entry point. This was a great soundtrack for my afternoon walk. Tempos were lively and kept me moving. I like it as background for work and kitchen grooves while making dinner. It's hard to distinguish between "songs" --- it's just one long dance party. Today that matched my mood and agenda perfectly.
“The Edge named it his favourite album of 1995.”
Not generally my cup of tea, but there is a consistently energy level and tone that makes this a fine listen.
Absolute super classic. Loved this!
Emotional response
cool
Pretty cool electronica music. Feels like I’m in a 90s action movie
It wasn't the right mood for this sound the day it was suggested but I do appreciate and like this style of music. I just wasn't interested in it at the moment.
Good album, decent beats, originality and variety. Provides energy
Exit Planet Dust is the best album of The Chemical Brothers. Great Big Beat tracks that are bombastic and over the top in a good way. If you can listen to it without the urge to move your body there is definitely something wrong with you.
A brilliant breakthrough album that is as good now as it was back then.
A brilliant debut that holds up today, a testament to them that they have six albums even better than this
The Prodigy.
4, skroz solidno, ugodno za slusat, nije dosadno
cool
Brilliant for cycling to! No good to listen to, it's either dance or exercise
My first electronic album, enjoyed it more than i thought would be Easy 4/5
Exit Planet Dust was an interesting listen. It did sound like it came from the 90s electronic scene. The tracks which all bled into one another had that gritty sound that seem related to the Achtung Baby through Pop U2 albums. It kept my attention throughout though with its every changes collages of sounds and beats. I enjoyed the second half more than the first from Chico's Groove to the last track, Alive Alone.
Bleep bleep, good beats
Muy buen disco. Escuchable en cualquier circunstancia
30. Exit Planet Dust - The Chemical Brothers 11 tracks. Not something I would usually listen to but despite it being an early album is very good, (and even better via headphones). Had me absolutely hooked from the get go and made me go looking for more afterwards. 4/5
Sounds like the sega game Streets of Rage's soundtrack and I'm all down for it.
The brothers worked it out
Are The Chemical Brothers actually related?
Yeah this was pretty fun, I liked it. Made me want to party.
An excellent album
