This was a cool historical artifact! She had a lovely voice and I enjoyed it, but probably not one I would want to relisten to.
Stämningsfullt och trevligt, men också lite tråkigt. Trea rakt av.
Mysigt!
Stark trea!
Måste finnas en miljard såna här plattor? Ja, ja. Rätt trevligt och glatt
gorgeous voice, creative performance, classic piano. lovely. could round up to be honest
Fine. I’m glad I listened. Is it possible that Just A Gigolo is one of my favorite songs? I seem to always enjoy it whenever I hear a new version of it.
Another fun little live record. She’s not my favorite vocalist but this was nice.
I wanted to like this more, but her voice and the music both struck me as unremarkable. I liked it, though.
I'm not a huge fan of vocal jazz, but this record is pleasant enough. Nothing I'd go out and choose to listen to, but nothing I'd feel be annoyed with if it was playing.
I know and acknowledge the talent and power but not in the mood for scat-a—doodles today. Am not sure when I would ever listen to this for pleasure.
Album #1,040 Great jazz singing lady. I prefer this over Ella Fitzgerald, though the length of that Ella album may have made a difference. How could you not adore her when she sings "I fouled it up" and keeps going? Yeah, today it would be "Yo I fucked dat shit up, but fuck it we gone keep goin' up here in dis bitch!" The downside, it can be a bit too slow at points.
pleasant, but not that special.
A nice, cozy blanket of a recording.
5.5/10 - She has a great voice. She oozes charm and charisma. She made a fun live album. This was probably awesome in 1957 or if you love jazz.
Sarah Vaughan's voice sounds great live, but the songs don't blow me away. It's nice. 7/10
September in the rain - 4 Willow weep for me - 3 Just one of those things - 3 Be anything but darling be mine - 4 Thou swell - 3 Stairway to the stars - 3 Honeysuckle rose - 4 Just a gigolo - 3 How high the moon - 3
Amazing voice, impressive skills from the players, still just don't like jazz.
I'm sure this was the shit in 1957 but I found it super boring. Beautiful voice but you get the jist of it within a song or two.
This is a live album from 1957, and I felt the sound quality was good given the age of the album. Sarah Vaughn always has been considered a jazz singer, but she did all kinds of music. She does have a jazzy way of singing, though. There are some good Sarah Vaughn songs, but none of them are on this album.
Been awhile since one of my classic switcheroos, but here it is... I've been mixing up Sarah Brightman and Sarah Vaughn. This live jazz album from the 50s cleared things right up, though. (Her daughter was in the Buffy movie!) It's fine and pleasant, but not that interesting. All these jazz standards kinda sound the same to me. One of the least objectionable live albums, though. Cool album cover. I enjoyed the meta-ness of 'How High the Moon', clap clap clap, but I can't imagine ever listening to this for funsies.
Very pleasant one to listen to, would like it as some background noise to a party. Vaughan's voice is phenomenal here too. It gets a high 3, since this sort of jazz isn't really my thing, therefore I wouldn't go seek it out again. But with every jazz record I'm getting on this list, I can feel my appreciation and enjoyment for jazz ever so slowly l, but surely, increase.
Great voice. Loved Stairway to the Stars.
Not my favorite style of vocal jazz - too detached, operatic, polished
standard jazz, good vocals.
Nice but not for me
Very pleasant voice from someone I've not heard of. Considering how much Fallout music I've listened to I'm genuinely surprised I've not come across her before. Did not like the scatting at the end.
sounds good, classic
Great live vocals, but not the most interesting songs
The album was good, but I just couldn’t get into it. I listened to BB King’s Live at the Regal recently and thought that was much more entertaining. But I still enjoyed this album.
Just some chill vibes, very nice
It was OK, nothing special but a good vibe bumps up the score. This is the oldest album I’ve ever listened to. Rating: 62/100
6 Silkyyy
Nice. Great voice, decent songs, fine.
Another album from 1956, after I got Louis Prima's The Wildest about a month ago. This one isn't quite as good as that one, as Prima's record had a lot more energy to it. Take Just a Gigolo, which is interestingly on both records. Compare the two and it’s not even close, as Prima’s clears easily. That said, it's amazing that this still holds up after 70 years, mainly because Vaughn's voice is really great. That makes it at least worth the listen, though not much more.
Not something I'd revisit regularly, but this is a kind of jazz I can appreciate: comfortable and satisfying with a twinge of pleasant nostalgia. Vaughn's vocals are sublime and the warts and all nature of this live recording adds to the charm.
This is my eleventh jazz album from the list and by far the best of the lot.
Incredible Sunday morning record! No wanky jazz solos. Track 9 has some scatting, which I have a hard time not gigging to. A great “set it and forget it” album… no big standouts, but a lovely vibe throughout.
What a voice! I love an alto voice, and hers is as good as it gets in jazz. I love the intimacy of the live crowd which reminded me in moments of Tom Waits' Nighthawks At The Diner. The album went a little long for me though and it became more background music than a really engaging album by the end of it.
Gorgeous voice but I really don't think I would listen to this ever again except maybe for some pleasant background music.
For jazz, that wasn't bad. Actually appreciated the live aspect. Great voice. Cold rainy coffee morning kind of an album.
Feels like you’re at there - very nice recording. Feels intimate She has an beautiful voice and the arrangements are all nice
The Sarah Vaughan Lovely Lounge Experience. Bloopers, gigolos and skat singing about making whoopie.
Cool jazz swing album
Enjoyed
This was cute - I love hearing the live recording and the chatter between her and the audience. Not something I would actively listen to but I was compelled at points.
honestly quite good! i do love jazz music however i wish there was a version of this album that wasn't recorded live. that being said, definitely one of the better live recordings ive heard, with quite clear vocals and instrumentals. would love to hear this live in a jazz bar with my friends. most likely wont listen to this album start to finish again, but definitely added a few of the songs to my jazz playlist. 6/10
Fine to listen to but nothing really interesting.
Quite enjoyable.
A lovely 50s live jazz album by a lesser known by prominent jazz singer. Listened to the longer version of the album, which makes the whole thing more complete rather than a few selected tracks. I enjoy these live selections.
I was not familiar with Sarah Vaughan before now. Beautiful voice. I enjoyed her ad-libbing and the crowd response in "Willow Weep for Me" and "How High the Moon." The only song title that looks familiar to me is "Just a Gigolo." I was surprised to hear the word "lollapalooza" in "Thou Swell."
First thing I noticed is how sweet & smooth her voice is, like a cool breeze on a night. The vibe or sound of the album was light hearted in a way. I enjoyed listening to it, but my type of music if just far from this genre, though Jazz is something I will be up to listen to. Liked songs: September in the Rain, Just One of Those Things Rating: 3/5 JAN 19, 2026 - 5:20 PM
It’s a live album of jazz standards. It’s from the 50s and sounds like it. I wanted to like it more, because I always say I’d like jazz if it had words and this is jazz with words. I did like it, but I didn’t love it. It had “Just One of Those Things” and that was fun, but I was kinda just wishing it was the Jamie Cullum version
I’d never heard of Sarah Vaughan before. Jazz is a little like rock in that there are so many different styles in the genre it ends up being a fairy wide catch-all name and you’re not sure what you’ll actually end up listening to. I like a lot of “jazz” but more the old classic jazz, noir and the newer doom jazz. I’m not keen on the experimental jazz as a rule. Sarah Vaughan is at the very commercial end of jazz, almost so much that a lot of it doesn’t even really sound all that “jazzy”. I enjoyed her and certainly wouldn’t change songs if she came on - but not sure I’d necessarily go out of my way to listen to her again.
Excellent styling. Beautiful voice
It's nice, but if I wanted to go to a live jazz gig I'd go to one. Haven't heard a live album on here that should be on here yet. Though I suppose it's not that live, really. Whatever, I'm tired.
Ihan ok taustamusiikkia. 2,75/5.
Aww she was really talented <3 I usually hate jazz, and hate live albums but this was oddly comforting.
Ein Jazz-Klassiker
It’s nice, but a live album shouldn’t be on this list. Didn’t you hear me before?
Solid crooner album. Gets a little monotonous. He personality is infectious.
I like the music here. Folks seem to love Sarah Vaughn's voice, which isn't too bad, but I could do without all the vibrato. All in all, a fine record, though it's not something that really captures my attention. 3/5
Sarah Vaughn has a great voice and delightful attitude l, and her personality really shines through her performance. This genre of music in general is not for me but I understand why someone believed anyone should listen to this recording. It feels like it is a "big moment" for Jazz music.
love jazz
beautiful singing, just not my thing
Beautiful voice, great haunting jazz tone from the band
72/100
Great singing and piano
nice to passively listen to because of sarah vaughan's voice
not my typical listening, but some very nice jazzy mood music for when I feel like cosplaying sipping a martini alone at a jazz club. it being a live album definitely enhances that. 3/5⭐️
It's a good album of jazz standards, I prefer others like Etta James but Sarah is good. She forgets the lyrics on more than one song, and I don't like a couple of her adaptations like on honeysuckle rose, but she comes across as charming working around the difficulties which gives the album some life.
Good, but I probably wouldn't listen to this again. All the songs sounded similar.
god this lady can sing. Like crazy can sing like crazy!!
Inoffensively delightful. A nice reminder of what liking music means without forcing liking. Pleasant background. 3/5
Quite calming to be honest
September In The Rain - 7/10: I like the instruments/beat (idk what to call it) a lot. I also like the higher notes she hits. Willow Weep for Me - 6/10: I like her vocals, the only thing that threw me off a bit was the crashing sound? toward the end, but that's what happens with live albums I suppose. Just One of Those Things - 6/10: Not terrible, but I don't love her volume. I like the instruments/beat though. Be Anything But Darling Be Mine - 6/10: I like her vocals in this song. The song isn't bad at all, it's just kind of bleh. Thou Swell - 7/10: Again, I really like her vocals in this song. I also like the instruments/beat. Stairway to the Stars - 6/10: I like her vocals and the instruments/beat. The song is just a little bleh and forgettable. Honeysuckle Rose - 7/10: I like the higher notes she hits, along with the instruments/beat. Just a Gigolo - 6/10: The song isn't bad, it's just that nothing stood out to me. I like the piano though. How High the Moon - 4/10: I like the instruments/beat, but she's kind of just hooting and hollering, she's not really saying anything. This is my first time hearing this song so I don't know if that's how it's supposed to go, but I don't really like it. Overall Score: 55/90 Overall Rating: 6/10 - I have never really explored the jazz genre, and this is probably the first jazz album I've listened to front to back. It's not a bad album, I'm just not a huge fan of jazz. I really like her voice though, and the instruments/beat or whatever you call if was also nice. It's just not my favorite album, but I could see myself possibly listening to it again in the future.
When this album came on I started sweating, my blood pressure went up, one of my legs started twitching, my eyes were unable to focus on my computer and I felt a slight but palpable sense of dread. It took me a moment, but then I realized it was a physiological reaction to the similarity between this album and that monstrosity, Ellla Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book (even the title of that album is bloated...how about Ella Fitzgerald sings Gershwin?). This album is way better than that. The lyrics are way better, it is much shorter, and if the singing isn't on par I can't tell. I even like the bloopers that were included.
Favourites: 1. Just A Gigolo
Genre: Vocal Jazz This was a sweet, very raw-feeling live show from one the bigger voices of the 50s, Sarah Vaughan. It's a sultry vibe at Mister Kelly's, the songs are slow, the music is smooth, and I'm sure it smelled of cigarettes in there. Overall, the music is just fine, but I almost enjoyed it more for the fly-on-the-wall moments. A mic falling (audience laughs), her not knowing the words of the last song and doing her best Ella Fitzgerald impression, things like that. But, probably won't revisit. 3/5
solidno ali nije me oborilo s nogu :/ također zvuk nije najbolji... jebiga
Cool sound, awesome vocals. I love the sound of old live recordings.
Ignore what Saul said and read this Instead For its time its genuinely quite good, would never choose to listen it but if i was out at dinner and they had this playing i would be quite content.
Quite nice. Relaxing. Lovely jazz piano. A very good 3. I don't think I'd ever choose to put it on but a very nice atmosphere.
This was great for the first half but then lost it
Different, not my style of music
She has a good voice but its not really for me. 2.5
I love how warm the upright bass sounds, and how that warmth blends with Sarah Vaughan’s deep, rich vocals.
Gee, mister. Thanks.
I loved her voice and the live album was fun.
this was very amazing because of the live aspect and it genuinely felt like you were in the room, but other than that i felt like it was quite bland.
Felt warm yet chill at the same time. Love Vaughan's voice, yet none of the songs truly standout for me, except Willow Weep for Me and Honeysuckle Rose. Helped me read a book, though.
Pretty good
Amazing vocals, improvisation that just flows, really an amazing performance. However that sort of 1950’s skiddlybop jazzy lounge music is not really my favorite thing.
"Act normally" when listening to this one. Heart-warming and cozy, this quick look into Sarah Vaughan live sounds wonderful...in the background.
First time listening to Sarah Vaughan, just a beautiful voice. Soothing, relaxing and the perfect soundtrack for a hungover Sunday morning
I enjoyed this! I’ve never dedicated time to properly listening to jazz I’ve always thought I should try but never really have and i’m so happy I liked it. Sarah Vaughan is SO charming I loved all her unpolished unserious moments. It doesn’t lose anything from being a live album, it adds to it, the vibe is relaxed and warm. Really appreciate getting this one as my first real listen to jazz.
Almost choked on the cigarette smoke by lounging in a 1950's club.
Sara Vaughan is a gem. This is a nice live album. Reminds me of Christmas even though it has nothing to do about Christmas. Just has that sound I guess. Either way its nice to here this time of year. I do wish this album is a lot shorter because boy does it drag on. Favorite track: Just A Gigolo 3.5/5
Like the live aspect of it, it is nice but not really something I'd choose to listen to. Highlights: Be Anything But Darling Be Me (Mine?), Honeysuckle Rose
I didn't listen to the full album but of what I listened to I really enjoyed but not In a way that made me want to go back to it. I feel evil saying that 😖. Anyway I love how it was recorded live cos it reminded me of this lovely jazz singer who used to perform at the local pub witch I really enjoyed
Soulful, jazzy performance, but most of it's charm comes from it being 'old' music.
Jazz and scat are not for me, but that's ok. Sarah has a lovely voice and is funny and engaging with her audience on this recording. It's always interesting to hear music from a much older time when things were different. That said, I wouldn't seek this out for future listens.
A very Indy sounding album and if you don’t like Indy this will not change your mind. I do like Indy and found myself really enjoying this album. Both the music and vocals I found entrancing and found myself really enjoying quite a few songs
A very pleasant set of tracks, all of which are just a little too traditional and a little too similar. Sarah's voice is incredible, and I found the more upbeat tracks on this to be a joy (the closer made me laugh out loud). But taken as a whole without being present for the actual performance, it feels a little dry on the whole. Something I see myself returning to when I'm in the mood for something very mellow.
A fine jazz album but not really many songs I liked, she has a fine voice but I feel like I've heard a lot of stuff just like this
Nice on the ears
Very 1950’s. Was a live studio recording with audience. Had a nice feeling to it. Not music I would choose to listen to, but glad I did.
a fun performance .
My journey through the 1001 Albums has highlighted a distinct preference for Jazz vocal over the purely instrumental Jazz reviewed thus far. While I've always appreciated live recordings, and enjoy them greatly, a truly great live album must offer something transcendent beyond its studio equivalent, be it exceptional performance quality, innovative arrangements, historical significance, or palpable atmosphere. In this respect, "At Mister Kelly's" feels somewhat subdued and one-paced. Ultimately, I found it to be a good, but not great, live recording. Neither Sarah Vaughan's performance, her band's playing, nor the selection of songs provided the crucial spark needed to elevate it above a solid three-star rating. Side one 1 "September In The Rain" (3/5) 2 "Willow Weep for Me" (3/5) 3 "Just One of Those Things" (3/5) 4 "Be Anything But Darling Be Mine" (3/5) Side two 1 "Thou Swell" (3/5) 2 "Stairway to the Stars" (3/5) 3 "Honeysuckle Rose" (3/5) 4 "Just a Gigolo" (3/5) 5 "How High the Moon" (3/5) Total - 27 Average - 3.00 181/1001 99/181 albums reviewed were new to me.
Really captures the sense of time and place. Would love to have witnessed it live. A few glitches make it not the best-ever live album. Someone said they wished this list included a studio album and I agree. Vaughan is fantastic but I’d like to hear her without the imperfections.
Sarah Vaughan on todella taitava laulaja, hänellä on hyvä soundi äänessä.
Best Track - "Honeysuckle Rose"
Interesting album. I liked Sarah's singing, but it was too forward in the mix. On a few occasions, I totally couldn't hear the backing band at all, and I couldn't track the rhythm. That was off-putting. Also, some of the songs are too slow for me. I liked the peppier numbers though. 2.75/5
Jazz antigo
Lovely. I liked her better than Billie Holiday. 3/5
A beautiful voice over instrumentals which are nothing special
Tight band, riktigt bra piano. Inspelningen låter verkligen live utan att ljudkvaliteten brister. Men texterna är i tråkigaste laget. Det blir snabbt bakgrundsmusik till middagen.
enjoyable to listen to. Nothing outstanding, but great to listen to while i was working. There were elements (like Just a Gigolo) where i thought maybe i can understand, but for the most part, I was struggling to see what makes it something i have to listen to before i die though. 3 Stars
The ladies voice is incredible, the show style speakeasy vibe is very cool being live. One of the tunes they played off a mistake on stage that you don't often hear on recorded material, which added to the engagement. Enjoyed it, probably play on a rainy Sunday morning having coffee.
Fantastic voice and really nice listen. Not something I’d usually listen to but enjoyable and easy to listen to. No real standouts but good album.
No private session used for Spotify. This album was quite pleasant and fun to listen to. Not sure when I will listen to it again, but I will try to make a point of it.
Fallout vibes
Nice live album of old style jazz vocal
I'm having a disconnect with Ms. Vaughn's singing style, that isn't really her fault as I assume it's just how she was trained. Her singing voice is fine, beautiful even, but like old-tyme actors annotation & projecting one's voice is paramount. Yet, to modern ears they like old tymey radio show hosts & all sound the same. Though Vaughn's voice is slightly different than Ella Fitzgerald's they sound very similar. So much so that she even mentions singing How High The Moon like her.(which is a fun bit of improv on her part) The band is cooking on Honeysuckle Rose but I found them to be somewhat dull or serviceable on the rest. It's highly intriguing to hear Just a Jiggalo not sung by David Lee Roth's cheesy whimsical 80s blues version but Vaughn's version is a bit dour. 3
to me, this is pretty, but forgettable.
Pleasant voice, boring, music, and insipid lyrics. Did she ever sing anything of meaning?
it was fun at some times but after all it`s still a jazz album
good but not something id listen to. this is like the 4th album ive gotten this week that's been something well made but not to my tastes so i fear that might have affected my enjoyment of this album a little
Nice enough vocal jazz. Beautiful voice and an autumnal feel, but I miss a more interesting backing track, maybe some horns. 3.5 stars
Thought At Mister Kelly's was pretty nice and a breezy listen. I think some of the ballads get a little sleepy, and the last track with all the scat singing tested my patience, but overall, it's a good sounding album and Sarah and the band sound very good. 3 stars
3.5
yeah this is good. i'll never listen to it again, but i'm glad sarah could go to mister kelly's and record it. 3/5
Fine enough. Lovely jazz and her voice is great. Just not a fan of the actual songs for the most part.
Maybe prefer the studio stuff.
Another classic album. Nothing really stood out to me too much but it did sound really nice.
It's calm evening music
Eh. I don't know. 3/5
Ok, I laughed when she started singing that they really messed up the song. Once again, Vocal Jazz is a bit better than regular jazz. And a live recording I think captures the essence better than something more manufactured. All in all I think this one's worth 2, possibly 3 stars. Maybe someday I'll appreciate jazz a bit more, but I'm not there quite yet.
Nice jazz-singer album. Perhaps the best sort of jazz. I dunno.
That's some smoooth jazz, man. We've been on a roll with the live/jazz albums we've been getting lately. But that's just the luck of draw. I actually listened to this one twice: once at work and again at dinner time. It's exactly the type of stuff I'm looking for on vinyl. Perfect for dinner music, or when you're sipping a cocktail beside the fire.
Just a lovely jazz album. Perfect for the autumn evening where it's pitch black outside by 6pm; a very cozy listen. Beautiful voice, beautiful set. Will definitely be coming back to this one over the next few weeks.
3.0 - Ok

The Good: We get some SrV!!! The Bad: It’s a different kind of blues... The Ugly: It seems that we need a script to hang at Mister Kelly’s If one is not into jazz, this is not your album. I am not into jazz… Having said that, what is refreshing is listening to a set in a jazz bar, by one of the greatest jazz singers of her generation, know that there is no room for autotune et al… I would have given this album a 4* thanks to the inclusion of “Just a Gigolo”, however, the last track on the album removed that star as I am not ready to listen to freestyle scatting again… Sorry SrV. 3*
Loved the banter. Not my style exactly but nice.
I give this a 3.5 stars, but I find it hard to round up above 3 on this scale, because I just can't imagine it being a great example of even Sarah Vaughan's work. I understand that some of the vocal flubs, forgetting lyrics, is showing the fun and improvisation, but it just feels less impressive to me than many other great jazz records.
Sarah Vaughan isn’t one of my favourite jazz vocalists but I found this record pretty decent overall. Liked the atmosphere and the spare group playing behind her.
Sarah Vaughan. Enjoyable. Smooth sounding voice. Good album.
after the first song, i wondered why she needed lyric sheets. then i understood
Jazz is just elevator music.
Easy listening, she has a beautiful voice
Very peppy smooth jazz. All good
There's a lot of live albums on this list aren't there? You can close your eyes and put yourself in the room, but that doesn't mean its particularly memorable.
3.5
I don't know. I really like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Sarah Vaughan I never got into, and this album did not change that opinion.
Smooth, loved the intro of the live record, didn’t listen super closely but very nice atmospheric music
I’m sure you had to be there. Three stars.
Good voice. Didn’t like the recording.
I can appreciate a good female crooner hitting her notes in front of a live audience.
Cozy but not really my thing. Objectively very talented
This was just very pleasant. Not really my cup of tea, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Already reviewed, pretty cool for a live album
Decent background music!
A little too musically and slow for me just a tad
Solid jazz in a live setting
I really liked the incorporation of the audience. It made me appreciate how the crowds of live albums done in arenas don’t really have personality; they just exist to incorporate the roar of the crowd.
Personally, this ain’t really my cup of tea of jazz music but if I need to rate it truthfully and personally… all the songs just sound the same to me just old jazz music But still, it gives off a nostalgic feeling towards me like I’m watching an old movie or show as a kid lol Like I said all of the songs sound the same to me but if I had to choose a song I liked, I’ll say “Stairway To The Stars” I quite enjoyed the piano on that song! overall it’s a good album if you like jazz
GORGEOUS and MESMERISING voice. sarah vaughan is so captivating. always like a live album as well
I‘m not a great fan of jazz, so I stay neural
Love Sarah Vaughan but did not care much for this live album. Not a lot of her best standards and the sound quality was not the best.
Feels like something I'd hear on a cruise ship nowadays.
This was such a soulful album. Very warm.and comforting.
Aight
3 1/2 stars Very good. I need to listen to more Sarah Vaughan.
Beautiful voice
A nice listen for a Monday
An ok live album, some nice moments but just a bit mixed. 3 stars
You Must Hear Before You Die".
What a dynamic, beautiful voice that perfectly fits the skilful jazz band that backs her. The fact that this is a real album, which has a nice interaction with the audience, yet remains professional and genuine.
Probably the best live album I've got on here so far. Let's hope it's the last and we can end on a high. I'll probably give them all a 1 after this out of spite. This is pretty good though. Her voice is lovely, it's well recorded, and has personality that i feel the others miss. Still would have been infinitely better had I actually been here. Like standing outside a party you weren't invited to, looking in through the window showing you what you missed. 3 Stars.
Very 50s jazz. Sarah has an amazing voice, a little more warbly than I like and not as dynamic as I like, but still very enjoyable to listen to. For a live album, the sound quality is excellent and the audience is not disruptive, just polite minimal clapping.
Listening to this feels so ALIVE. The mistake early on; the authentic crowd reactions, the intro, the banter. This feels like a living, breathing performance captured in a bubble and catapulted through time. This makes me think of every white girl that thinks she’s a jazz singer. This was wildly influential music and now the whole act feels a bit kitsch in the current world. Like a theater company hosting a “jazz night” at a bar as an excuse for the prettiest one to sing and drink too many martinis while the others all wear fedoras. A coin boy’s wet dream. But this album feels like the opposite of that. It sounds smokey, tastes like whiskey and stale beer, and has the glow of the neon outside of the windows. There’s a Cadillac outside waiting to pick up a beautiful woman. The smack was still pure, the pie tasted better, and no one wore a seatbelt.
Not the biggest fan of jazz, but man, her voice is incredible.
she’s so silly
This is REAL 1950's live jazz. Not that fake live jazz Tom Waits shit. This album is good in an old timey way. It's cool that it's a live album but it doesn't have great live energy except for the part that she messes up and just keeps going. Clearly these songs are played to showcase her vocals but I would've liked the background players to take a few solos and show their chops a bit. If you like Ella Fitzgerald then you'll probably like this. They are similar but true fans can probably tell you all the ways they are different. I like Thou Swell. I've never heard the word "Lalapalooza" in a song before. Interesting that the word was being used in the 50's by the swinging hep cats. I like Louis Prima's version of Just a Gigalo better.
I love fallout music and this is basically that. But I would prefer actual music from fallout like Uranium Fever, I don’t want to set the world on fire, crawl out through the fallout... I don't hate this but I don't love it.
Vaughan could sing an autopsy report and it would still sound like honey.
Old school bandstand. The singing is the highlight by far as the backing band sounds very generic to me. She would occasionally adlib and make up lyrics which was fine for the most part but was extremely grating on the last song where she sang gibberish the whole time. Favorite: September in the Rain Least Favorite: How High the Moon
Good album, very pleasant sound. Was sometimes off key during impro but still very interesting.
Very fun and vocals were sublime. You can feel her emotions through the lyrics but also how fun it was to sing. Lovely.
Beautiful music, just not my cup of tea.
What's not to like? Jazzy, well sung. Not mind-blowing, but solid album
Lovely record. I didn’t think a live album from 1957 would sound so crisp and well-produced, and there was a playful tone from Vaughan just having fun the whole way through, even when she made mistakes. Best Track: Willow Weep for Me
Has a nice voice, seems like this isn’t her most famous album though.
meh
I'm not really into vocal jazz, and apart from early Billie Holiday's early records, this albums makes not much of an exception to me. But I've got to admit her voice is truly impressive and the ambience of this live recording, makes it very intimate. So, 3/5 for me.
Cool, jazzowy, lekko monotonny. Go black woman!
good
I'm not the biggest fan of Sarah Vaughan. She is very gifted technically and an important singer but I've never found her voice and inflection to be that pleasing to my ears.
Sounded pretty basic. Nothing stand out. She messed up a number of songs too.
I love the silly interludes. You really feel like you step back in time putting this on. I want to sit on the stair bleachers at Kelly’s. The place appears to be long gone, sadly.
This type of vocal jazz just isn't my cup of tea... Zero credit goes to Sarah Vaughan for songwriting because this is a covers album. OK - I understand it was often done like that in the day, but the fact remains that being a decent singer is orders of magnitudes easier than writing your own songs AND singing AND (in many cases) playing them. Interpretation and vocals are good, but I'm not a fan of the same vibrato that ends almost every phrase. On the plus side, this works very well as a live album (jazz is always best live IMO) and I would have very much enjoyed being in the room. A generous 3.
Nice. Probably better enjoyed in the smokey club, sipping an Old Fashioned.
Favorites: September in the Rain, Just One of Those Things, How High the Moon While I do enjoy listening to jazz from time to time, vocal jazz really isn't my go-to, as I favor artists like Miles Davis and John Coltrane. However, listening to this may have changed my mind and inspired me to check out some more vocal jazz. Sarah Vaughan's voice is nothing short of angelic, and her band fits her singing style so well. The recording quality and mixing is masterful as well, it's hard to believe that this was a live album released back in 1957. While nothing here is revolutionary per se, the listening experience was wonderful and I really wish I was alive to attend Sarah's performance at Mister Kelly's. 7/10
Muito bom
Similar to Marley, I enjoy this as background music, but wouldn’t often reach for it. Too slow for work - it’s a very lowkey vibe. Feels like a winter evening.
Right time and right place this is a lovely laid back album.
I listened to the live extended version and I really liked the bits where she sang some nonsense to cover for mess ups. don't really mess with jazz but had a good workout with this
*1967 live jazz album. *Very pretty album. *Sarah Vaughan has a lovely voice. *Made me think 'jazz is kind of cool' but didn't make me actually look into jazz any further. RATING - 6/10
Iskreno nisam poslušala do kraja, jako lijepa glazba tho no problem mi je sto sve zvuci isto.
I'm not usually a big fan of jazz, but I like this one. It makes me want to drink whisky and smoke.
An incredible voice. Listening to this made me jealous I wasn't at a concert that happened like 40 years before I was born.
Lovely voice and really pleasant showroom tunes. High 3.
Fun listening to her talk with the crowd. Pretty solid otherwise. Another high 3.
Great singing and piano combo. I listened to the shortened 35 minutes version because I didn't really think I needed to do the whole 75 minute one I think I got the idea. My favorite part was when someone dropped something and made a loud thud noise on the recording.
Listenable.
Beautiful voice
Love her soothing voice and the sound of the crowd. Some songs were a bit boring and repetitive but loved some of them. She has great character and the piano is very soothing
Pretty standard jazz …
tried to like it but it wasnt for me
Dinner jazz to feel pretentious to. She’s got a pretty voice, accurate for the era. Ok her scatting is terrible. Like the Pam Anderson in Lethal Weapon but not satirical.
Nice, quick live jazz album. I had never heard of Sarah Vaughn so this was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed her quip that she thought a track was going into the album. #classyconfidence Top Tracks: "September in the Rain," "Be Anything but Darling Be Mine"
I have no clue what this is or who it is, or what we're dealing with other than this is jazz. And most of my experience with jazz, generally, is confined to "I've listened to that one song by Dave Brubeck 1000 times" and one (1) episode of White Collar that takes place in a jazz club and Diahann Carroll sings in it and it's good. Anyway, here we go. Oh, she can SING sing. Nice. This is gorgeous. Really nice and great background music, and super talented artists on this. It's gonna be a solid 3 because I don't think this is groundbreaking or anything (how would I know?) but great. One of the 700 albums to listen to (once) before I die for sure.
--September in the Rain...great voice. very nice --Willow Weep for Me...great vibes. I think something fell down? The audience laughs. It's fun --Just One of Those Things...continues the mood but it's just okay --Be Anything But Darling Be Mine...slows things down. Wonderful tone to her voice. Very nice --Thou Swell...another 'okay' one --Stairway to the Stars...It's all been good so far but I really like when she gets slow and soft --Honeysuckle Rose...this is scandalous! --Just a Gigolo...another slow and sweet one. I feel like this album is really only two songs slightly rearranged into nine tracks. At least both of those songs are really good and Sarah Vaughan can really sing --How High the Moon...lol did they not give her the lyrics to this one? This is hilarious
More and more I'm finding these albums are "new-to-me". I'm excited for this one. Track 1 immediately highlights Sarah's voice. I also enjoyed the MC's introduction of what was happening. Such a different era. I am a big fan of when songs are referred to as "numbers'. I should look up the entomology of that. Track 3 had a great tempo. Track 2 dragged a bit for me. I don't mind ballads, but long ballads can be a slog. Track 4 slows things back down. She is an incredible singer, and this is likely what people came to hear. I prefer the up-beat stuff, however. This is a really enjoyable album. I'm not up on the genre enough to know for sure if it is a must listen example but I am really glad I heard it. I'd put it on again as background music for a dinner with my elders. 3.5/5
good for baking
3/5 - Why did I need to hear this album before I die? To get the feel of the ambience in a mid-century jazz club in Chicago from a time well before I was born. Vaughn has a beautiful voice, and the standards are classic material, but this isn't the type of music I really engage with. In terms of musicianship and quality, this is surely higher than a 3, but it doesn't really move me.
Ok music and great voice but I am not a huge jazz fan and it does not stand out. Three stars
very talented. definitely great relaxing with a drink, in a jazz club, music. otherwise, not my cup of tea
A really solid live jazz album. Alot of character bleeding through, with actual mic drops and errors kept in, but played off really well hahaha. Really nice vocal talent.
I'll give this one another listen tomorrow when it's quieter, but I will leave a tentative score + some brief thoughts: - Sarah's voice is fantastic - I like the atmosphere of the recording despite it being just pretty by the numbers jazz - I really wonder what were people laughing at in some of the songs.
Must have been a fun show
A good captation of a great voice. Truly love the vibe here.
Kind of one dimensional
Some Olive Garden type jazz right here
This was my first Jazz album and the oldest on the list so far, I found it really relaxing and enjoyed the live atmosphere of the album. She had a strong voice and good lyrics
You know, this should be the type of jazz that's right up my alley. It's classy, she's got a fantastic voice, treads a bit into Fallout-core, very much dinner/cocktail jazz. But for some reason, its just not doing much for me, and can't quite put my finger on it. I will definitely say that the instruments do feel a bit low in the mix. I wish they were more prominent. When the music gets more upbeat, they tend to come out more, but then Sarah's vocals also get louder, so it feels like this competition between the two that I'm not a huge fan of. Good stuff, just not really hitting for me. Update: I think I know what I'm struggling with on this album. It's "too" dinner/cocktail jazz. It kinda falls into the same spot as salsa/samba/bossanova albums where for me the music only works in certain situations (Soundtracks accompanied by visuals, at specific places, etc) and doesn't work as music that I can just listen to. For example, Poor Butterfly, if you take out Sarah's vocals, that's just straight up funeral home music. Which is fine, it's not bad, but I don't want to listen to that type of music outside of that specific setting.
While I normally am not all that impressed with jazz albums, I did like this one. It was also a better live album experience than some others I've had on here. I thought the format worked well for the most part. There were times when it was clearly missing something from the performance, but not so many that it ruined it. Also the style and era probably made it seem less of a difference compared to a regular recording. The music itself was pleasant and enjoyable. Vaughan's voice was very smooth and flowed from the speakers in a cool way. The band's music was present, but not really showcased. There wasn't much to the whole show, which wasn't a bad thing in this instance. Everyone just did their thing and let Vaughan shine. I did get a short version of the album at only 9 minutes; looks like there is a much longer version too. I feel like I would've grown tired of it if I'd listened to it for that long. But I did like the length and content of the version I heard. I still didn't love it or think it was amazing, but I thought it was pretty good. Overall: 3.1/5
Fine but monotonous.
I could almost smell the cigarettes and martinis from this live recording. Smooth and sultry. Even though I’ve never listened to her she sounds like I picture every jazz singer SHOULD sound like.
Good vibes as background music, a little long in the tooth by the end. Crowd interaction was cool, but I wouldn’t put this on as a must listen, good background jazz party music
Not my sort of music but she clearly has an excellent voice
Classy old jazz singing, 3 for respect but was a bit dull
2.8 2x in airplane and at TPA awaiting Lyft. Great voice just not planning to listen again.
Classy, but not super exciting. Still, not a bad listen, and was fairly enjoyable.
Dad- 7 Mom- 6.5 Mike- 7 Lori- 7 Michael- 8 Miles- 5 Cole- NA Avg- 6.75
This one has some stuff going for it - Vaughan gives a good performance, her personality and ad libs are fun - but overall the album didn't wow me. I think the fault might lie with the song selection.
Before listening to this album, I knew nothing about Sarah Vaughan, but I definitely enjoyed listening to her. To be honest, I can't say I'll go back to her on a regular basis, but it was definitely a nice, chill, and smooth jazz album. Her voice stood out the most for me, which really showcased her talent the most.
Great album I would nevor purposely Go out of my way to listen to it. Since I don't really listen to music that's is much on the softer side except maybe some raggae or classic rock however it's still a good album And also definitely inspired a lot more music in the future And Sarah's voice is absolutely beautiful!
3.9
6/10 - A nice background album and Sarah Vaughan has beautiful vocals. I just don’t think the mixing was done very well, even with leniency for a love album, the instrumentation often gets drowned out. The set list is somewhat generic too, bar the final song which was a fun twist
Due to the limited availability had to listen to this on YouTube with ads so simply giving it 3/5
Great voice Standout songs Willow weep for me Honeysuckle rose
Jazzy but not too jazzy; chill brunch or coffee house vibes.
Todella kaunista laulua ja pehmeä tunnelma. Miellyttävä. Jättää jonkin muistijäljen, mutta korkeintaan sunnuntaitaustamusiikiksi laittaisin uudestaan. Biisit nimittäin eivät liiaksi erotu toisistaan.
New to me. Again, I have an bias against live albums as a fan of production, but her voice is undeniable.
I listen to jazz now.
The version of this that's on Spotify is subpar. I'll happily put up with vintage audio artefacts but "Lucky In Love" randomly turns into an Elvis song? To be careful if you're listening on Spotify. Otherwise, Sarah Vaughan's voice is clear and expressive and she tackles the varied setlist like a pro. Even forgetting the words, she can skilfully ad-lib nonsense which sounds better than most songs.
Very smooth, Sarah's voice is astounding. As a straight-through live recording it's pretty slick with no real fluff or filler in between. particularly like stairway to the stars and how high the moon where she "forgets" all the words. Can get a bit samey as it's 90% ballads
Very nice vibe
She can clearly sing, and to belt these live is amazing. But the arrangements weren’t my favorite for a couple tubes, especially when done live.
really sweet album, the live aspect adds a nice touch.
If I make it through this in one day then I truly can’t be defeated on this album generator. Jazz is great, she’s an amazing vocalist, I just get so tired. It’s a good Jazz live album that I had to break into like 14 different listening sessions. Very talented, recording sounds great, songs good, I don’t know that you need to hear this before you die.
Smooth but not my style
Amazing voice and presence
I kinda just want to be in that nightclub with a stiff drink in a non-Trumpian era, listening to Vaughan kill it with that spare jazz ensemble. She sounds excellent.
Great voice. Very relaxing. But it drags. Needs the right setting and someone who isn't impatient with ADHD
Very laid back for a live album. Surprised how many songs I recognised.
Very pleasant to work to. Don’t know what it says about it that I didn’t even notice when other music started auto-playing once it was done though. Not one of the greats, but still enjoyable and a beautiful voice.
My opinion can go either way on live albums. Sometimes, they're fantastic and you get to hear a unique version of the music that has developed beyond the studio version. Sometimes they're just not great. That said, I really enjoyed this album. It had a lot of what I do enjoy on live albums, and it felt like entering a time capsule. Even the mistakes were charming when handled so well by Sarah Vaughan. Her little ode to Ella Fitzgerald was sweet and funny.
Cool inclusion, but a little random, isn't it? Love that is brings more jazz, particularly vocal jazz, to the list, but why this one in particular? Either way, good album.
She’s a good singer but this was pretty dull.
Incredible voice.
This was decent, I liked her voice. I did get a little tired of the sound as a whole by the end, probably would have been great to see live.
Love Sarah Vaughan’s voice. It’s incredible, however I loathe this type of jazz. I’ve just never clicked with pop song/standards jazz singer stuff. 3 stars for Sarah alone.
It’s definitely jazz. It’s a relaxing album, not really my thing but that was pleasant. Either way, Sarah Vaughan is amazing
I'm not a fan of jazz, and I tend to shy away from live albums, so I'm going in with low expectations. But I can appreciate a band or a singer's talent.
I'm not usually a fan of Jazz or live albums, but this one is the exception. What a voice!
Not my jam but it was interesting.
Shoobie doo. Fall out vibes. Ok. Jazz.
Very chill. Beautiful, velvety voice. But unfortunately this nearly 70-year-old live recording offers some quirks of the time, like an almost unbearable hiss throughout most tracks. Do I wish I was at this show way back in 1957? Absolutely. Will I be rushing out to buy this album? Not likely. 3/5
beautiful voice my god.
Pretty good
Surprised they went with a live album as opposed to a studio album here. Her voice is great but overall I don't think I'll be coming back to it.
its great. great voice, good quality. i just prefer no voice i think, like the bill evans record. this is beautiful though
3/5 not a fan of jazz but otherwise good
