Great voice
Nice vocal jazz, not the genre that is really my cup of tea though.
It was alright. Felt like it dragged a bit though.
#jazz #soul
Nice album, chilled and Jazzy. 6/10
first album and i have no idea how to do listening notes. i hope its supposed to just be whatever. im used to having rules or direction or something. not complaining just new to this. anyways. it was neat hearin the live intro. this is a live recording which was taped "at mister kellys." she does have a great voice. first song was nice. got me engaged. her voice really does have a wide range of textures and its super enthralling, almost hypnotic. the crowd is as quiet as me with how immersed they are in her voice. she has a way about her music that just keeps you thinking, or remembering. and im only two songs in. in willow weep for me it seems like there was a little physical skit? or someone just stumbled. crowd laughed. it seems she messed up slightly? i'll remember to listen to a studio version of this song, Willow Weep For Me. next song, just one of those things. more pep. bouncing my head. im reading her wiki, and i noted that in an interview she once said in a 1982 interview for the magazine Down Beat, "I don't know why people call me a jazz singer, though I guess people associate me with jazz because I was raised in it, from way back. I'm not putting jazz down, but I'm not a jazz singer ... I've recorded all kinds of music, but (to them) I'm either a jazz singer or a blues singer. I can't sing a blues – just a right-out blues – but I can put the blues in whatever I sing. I might sing 'Send In the Clowns' and I might stick a little bluesy part in it, or any song. What I want to do, music-wise, is all kinds of music that I like, and I like all kinds of music. this song feels very sweet. the piano was great. i didnt get to note a lot else, but that isnt to say it wasnt good as much as the rest were. the fourth song is called Be Anything But Darling Be Mine. only a minute in, and i was very emotionally touched, as flustered as i am to admit that. it makes me think of gabe. i cried a little. it felt good. "thou swell" also reminds me of gabe but in a much brighter way, hes sweet and cute and i feel like i only need him around to feel okay. "stairway to the stars" is another one where the piano stands out to me. boy does this album make me think of gabriel! and her vocals are so beautiful and practiced. she is pitch perfect, its really a dedication to her craft i dont think is widely aspired to anymore because of the technology we have. "honeysuckle rose"!!!!!!!! its my song this time. this is gabe's song to me !!!! i want to be the sweetest thing in his life. this song makes me think about playing those sandbox games where you build things and craft and make an impact on the world around you, and i really do picture doing that with gabe in every way. i am still myself, but i enjoy letting him be a part of my life. i dont know what im really supposed to put in this and if it's supposed to be more technical. to me music is good if it makes me feel good and i think it really sounds impassioned and crafted. "just a gigolo" next song... jay coded. (oc not me.) half joking. actually joking its about actually being one. he could relate i guess? anyways. its cool, but i dont click with it as much though i do really love the piano again, i really like piano in general. the cons of live performances in "how high the moon"..... im assuming this was meant to be a cover??? sarah herself sings that she doesnt know the words. she mostly shoop-da-boops (i just dont know the term) and her voice is great and the notes are nice but i just. want to hear songs. its the last song and thats kind of an unfortunate note to end on. but she sings "we did the best we could" and i dont know if thats a notable lyric from the original song or not but it was a worthwhile note. overall, i liked the album a lot and i am excited to see what comes next. i think i will go with a rating system of 1 to 10, or maybe percentages to 100%. this album, with the inexperience of being the first of however many i end up listening too and the bias therefore, i will rate a 7/10, more specifically graded about a 74%. - 4/10/2024, Jay
Smooth
This is a very good album, but it does sound a bit like any jazz group one might find at a dinner joint or supper club. I will definitely listen to more Sarah Vaughan, though!
Alright but a bit samey. Some great songs. Started well but tailed off
Smooth vocalist, lovely slice of the Chicago jazz scene on display
And….even more JAZZ! I visualize a dimly lit smoky room with red velvet tufted upholstery and excessively small tables holding dirty martinis….that I would be in for 30 minutes tops. Very nice for the genre though and was a pleasant listen. 2.5/ 5 rounding up.
She sings good.
She's a 4. The album a 3.
I've never listened to this before by I am familiar with Ms. Vaughan. Her silky smooth voice is like butter on a hot roll. I've only recently become a jazz fan over the last few years. This particular recording really transports you back to what the late 50's Chicago jazz scene must've been like. I'll certainly mark this one for regular listening.
I can take it or leave it.... 3/5
-Her reading sheet music is interesting to me because it almost makes me feel like she’s trying to be studio polished when that’s entirely opposite of the live performance recording point -It’s insane how high quality this is -Ok the ad lib is iconic during the difficulties in weeping willow -ok the last song was kinda rogue -it was good and I’d buy it on vinyl but I feel like I’ve listen to 10 other live Jazz albums just like it
It's very cool to get a live version where they don't cut out the emcee. The crowd interactions gave a sense of authenticity to the album that I really enjoyed. If you listen really closely you can hear a man suck down his third Manhattan while downing a prime rib while his wife looks on with disdain. I don't know if it's an incredible jazz album though. I think it speaks volumes that my favorite song on this album is when she did an Ella Fitzgerald impression - I don't think she stacks up against the greats of the genre but it's a very solid performance. Very nice voice, smooth as hell back up band but nothing that's really going to stick with me.
My initial feelings are that this album would be amazing in a coffee shop. It makes me nostalgic for things I haven't experienced like new York, a jazz Christmas and jazz clubs in the 1950s. I love that they kept in the audience and things falling and rustling in the recording. The live record aspect really makes me feel like I was there, more so than any mtv unplugged. Her voice and band are incredible for being a live recording as well. However, I'm going to give it 3 stars because I probably won't ever listen again because jazz doesn't really hold my attention. It's me, not you lol
Conjures up smoky rooms with troublesome dames and rich bourbon. I still find it hard to LOVE jazz though. It's nice enough, but I can't say I'm excited by it.
This was objectively good, but the more of this 50s jazz and adjacent stuff I listen to, the more it all kind of sounds the same.
An American jazz singer and pianist, Sarah Vaughan performed and recorded this live album of jazz standards, "At Mister Kelly's," in 1957. This is a powerful and early album in Sarah Vaughan's career and it is a pleasure to hear her style.
Adorable little album. Beautiful voice, but it just reminds me of Starbucks for some reason
I liked most of this, but the last song got incredibly annoying. 3/5
Out of 48 studio albums and ten live albums, I’m not sure how this was the Sarah Vaughan album chosen for this book. It’s fine, but I don’t believe this album captures her at her best. Sarah Vaughan was incredibly talented and deserves inclusion, but if it were up to me, I’d have gone with a different album.
It's fine 3/5
Cute and jazzy. I liked that it is live, really takes you back to that moment
i dont want to listen to this. its not bad. theres nothing wrong. i just dont feel like it. i cant stay here. this place hurts my eyes and the humid, dense smell of the air brings me down. but, at the same time, there are thorns tied to my heart, and when i move the sink deeper and deeper. i cant stay here. it hurts to leave. i cant stay here with you and i. it hurts to be with you and i.
I liked that it was live
Klavier getragener Jazz mit irre guter Sängerin. Liveaufnahme, das man bereut nicht dabei gewesen zu sein.
Beautiful. Sarah is such a magical vocalist, and her talent is depicted his wonderfully Would like for the instruments to be heard better, but the sound quality of is a part of the magic, I guess
Lovely voice and songs but of it's era for me and can't give more than a 3.
#14 Sarah Vaughan - At Mister Kelly's (1958) Vocal Jazz Standards Pleasant album but imma be real I'm literally never gonna listen to anything on here ever again. At least the audience is having fun. Favourite Track: Just One Of Those Things Least Favourite Track: Honeysuckle Rose
classic jazz and skat. Sarah Vaughn's vocal power is evident, but without the formality of melodic or narrative prose.
This one is perfect to hear at a nice dinner, but it doesn't even compare to the jazz albums I've heard so far on this list.
Nice cooking album. Wouldn't listen often.
I enjoyed this, glad I stuck it out to the end despite its' length - the last song was a trip.
Smooth.
A delightful, charming, intimate, live album. Beautiful voice. Fave: How High The Moon
Great soulful jazz
I have not listened to much Sarah Vaughan. Nice voice These are not great song selections though 3 stars
01) September In The Rain - 7,5 02) Willow Weep for Me - 7,0 03) Just One of Those Things - 7,0 04) Be Anything (but Be Mine) - 6,5 05) Thou Swell - 7,0 06) Stairway to the Stars - 7,0 07) Honeysuckle Rose - 7,0 08) Just a Gigolo - 7,5 09) How High the Moon - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,11 (71/100) I don't like jazz but Ms Vaughan vocals made it more interesting. Sarah has a beautiful, soothing voice and it is very pleasant to listen. Love the mess up in song 2, it kinds of makes me feel like i'm really there at Mister Kelly's with them. The original album had 9 songs, so I chose to listen to that version, expanded version has 20 songs, it's too much jazz for me...
Excellent vocal jazz. It's a genre I know more generically and this record is a good place to out a name to the sound.
Liked the live aspect of it. Takes you back to the time. But thought it was a just fine album
Schöner Jazz-Livemitschnitt. Scat
Not really my style of music but she did have a lovely voice.
Nice for a romantic dinner
good voice, songs sounded pretty similar, not a bad live album
Pleasant to listen to
I was a little disappointed here, but that could be a matter of expectations. It's fine , she's a great singer, but it didn't "wow" me. I'd really prefer a studio recording over live. Easy 3, though. I was just hoping for more. 3/5
Gorgeous voice, evocative of Nina Simone if not as deep. Love that this is live and captures a moment in time.
Nice listen. Love Sarah Vaughan. Really great to hear her live.
Some songs are a bit too sleepy. Others are lovely. That was a very cute rendition of How High The Moon. Great performances!
It’s very pleasant and she demonstrates really great vocal control But it does get a little stale by the end… Last track might be the best Torn between 2 and 3
This is jazz I can enjoy. I'm not a fan of the scatting but she didn't do much of that.
Such a great voice, the last track made me laugh 😂
I much prefer instrumental jazz to vocal jazz but I do love a good live album. This one is particularly great because it makes you feel like you're sitting there at a table with a cocktail in front of you. It's a super chill album, put it on while you make dinner or throw it on after a long day at work. It doesn't really demand anything of you. I'm not sure I'd call it one of the top 1000 albums of all time but when you think about it 1000 albums is a lot of slots to fill. 3/5 for me but I'd definitely play this again.
Very pleasant cocktail Jazz, I enjoyed the vibes. I think as a matter of preference I prefer instrumental Jazz, but Sarah had a very nice soulful creamy voice. I wasn't blown away by this album, but I did enjoy listening to it.
Hon har ju en fantastisk röst och lyssningen är behaglig, även om jag föredrar jazz utan sång.
Easy listening
It was quite pleasant listening to this in the sunshine and I liked her humour when she lost her words. A live recording in a club from that long ago is a slice of history. I wouldn't seem out her music again but I'm going 3* for the experience.
Sarah Vaughan provides a memorable and charming live experience. Best Song: September in The Rain Worst Song: N/A
Never heard Sarah Vaughan before but she has a wonderful voice! And her performance on this was very lively, I loved it. Great listen!
This kind of vocal-heavy jazz pop isn't my thing, but the album wasn't bad. Her voice is amazing and does a lot of the heavy lifting here. I wish the songs had a little more structure and groove to them - without that, I was getting bored in several tracks. I liked the 3rd and 4th tracks the most
Better than the last live album I had to listen to. Decent as background music, vocals are great. Still kind of boring, I would have lost my mind if I was at Mister Kelly's in 1957 having to rawdog 36 minutes of this.
Her voice is nice but the music was kinda boring to me 6/10
Super raw live album. No frills just her singing. I never heard of her nice voice. Very jazzy - starting scatting and some improvisation. It was fine I’ll never go back to this one again.
Great background music while working.
She shook her voice too much which sucks because she has a beautiful voice.
Eh. Scratchy
Good bluesy album
Solid, old school soft jazz. An easy album to listen to and enjoy. This one didn't stand out to me that other similar albums have but it was still a solid album.
Haven’t heard of her but very reminiscent of Ella, hell the last song plays into the fact that she’ll sing like her. Great voice on a live track, mild audience is always a plus for these recordings. 3.5
Not my typical style preference, but didn't mind it.
Lovely stuff. Sublime voice.
not my personal favorite and i probably wouldn’t ever listen to it again but she had a beautiful voice
I mean, it's nice Jazz. But it's a bit too slow for me... 3/5
A nice listen but probably won't revisit, just because it's not a style of music that attracts me. Her voice is beautifully controlled and matches the jazz accompaniment perfectly. Great on this snowy day (1/16). Reminds me of some of the music my Grandma would have playing in the background while working around the house while my sisters and I spent our summers at her house.
Just a charming, sleepy little jazz record. Nothing crazy.
All I can think about is that this song was made for games like fallout and bioshock. Not bad, singer has a good voice. Very chill. I wish I was at a speakeasy smokin a cigar and enjoying some alcohol to truly experience this live albulm.
Great voice
This is a solid collection of standards. Ms. Vaughan's voice is powerful and lovely. The live setting gives it a looser more playful feel than a formal recording. Any fan if Nina Simone or Billy Holiday would enjoy it.
This lady can hold a note, vocal command is on-point and not in your face, very sleepy jazz, low-ceiling club jazz with wonderful live feel, really goes off on the last song
Ah, jazz from the 50's and female singers - nothing experimental about that, so I like this kind of jazz :)
Good for what it is, but not for me
not my music
Pleasant enough
the parts when she's improvising lyrics about how she doesn't know the words to the song are very charming It's all good, dunno if there's any other standouts. May not revist to see but will think about it. music: appreciated. (⌐□_□)
Nothing I don’t like here just not something I love either. Crowd noise adds a lot
Not bad for a live album, but it has all that chitchat and whatnot that attempts to capture the feeling of being there in person, and only serves to reinforce that you're not there in person. "Thou Swell" is a nice track, though, in its mixing of elevated vocabulary with playfully childish syntax. Otherwise, this is perfectly fine, but unexceptional.
Didn't know her before, nice and good music
Nice n chill overall. Thought the MC intro was interesting, really stood as a timestamp to the history of live album recording. Even when she didn't know the lyrics, she just kept on going; words, scatting or otherwise.
A very Sunday album. Never heard any of Sarah Vaughan before and it was a treat and hearing a musician having fun with her band and crowd is a delight. Live albums aren’t a go to normally but this was a rare gem.
Good sound, but music’s to slow!
Usually listening to metal / metalcore and other styles that most people would categorize as noise. I liked this album … I don’t pretend I know much about Jazz… but this album was very nice to listen to! I will put it on a playlist for times when “normal” people will visit me
Excellent singing, excellent arrangements, really stellar instrumentalist performances Also this sounds PHENOMENAL for a live record from 1957 - whoever engineered this thing is a genius Unfortunately it’s mixed a bit weird and the vocals are too much front-and-centre and the instrumentation is difficult to really hear everything that’s going on. If I really really loved jazz vocals this would maybe get a higher rating. Obviously this is a classic performance though and a rea achievement in love production.
Soft och skön. Ganska bra trots att det är live och jazz.
Great voice overlaying smooth jazz that makes for a relaxing evening. That's all there is to it. Songs aren't particularly noteworthy. Standard music and lyrics. Recording pretty good, though there are some hiccups here and there for being a live recording.
Do you like vibrato?
Good singer of course, but got a bit old after a while around the "shabba-dobie-dobie-doo" time. Music to wrap Christmas presents to.
Pleasant but not overly memorable.
Noticed some bjork moments. This was cool
primeiro álbum sendo de jazz, certamente uma maneira inusitada de começar, visto que que esse é aproximadamente 1% do meu repertório diário. álbum elegante e aconchegante. a voz e performance da artista são cativantes.
Cool vibe, but not my thing.
I did not like this album, but it is mainly due to my disinterest in jazz music. I will give Sarah Vaughan her credit though. Her voice is phenomenal and I would definitely recommend this album to fans of the genre. Also, it was humbling to hear her errors when performing live. Must have been amazing to hear in person! Favorite Song(s): N/A
Very nostalgic sounding. It’s interesting that her face isn’t on the cover. Her charisma shone through the small chatting between songs even the scatting. Her humming voice during “Be Anything but Darling Be Mine” I mistook for a clarinet.
Shabooby. Not sure what Sarah I was expecting, but for some reason I was expecting folk. I guess Sarah is not a very jazz name.
Easy listening, good jazz - great for a cocktail party. But, it's another live performance of collected songs, not a straight album. -1
I think it's impossible to listen to something from the 50s in 2023 that doesn't sound at least a bit outdated. I appreciate the effort of the book author to keep this kind of classical stuff on the list, but it's pretty hard to find the real hidden gems among the albums from that time.
chill.
Jazz to not my cup of tea, ale doceniam
Amazing voice. Sounds great. Recorded live and the set list isn't well designed or special.
Exactly what you would like to hear at a smoky, dimly lit jazz lounge, late at night. Three stars for her voice alone, but the songs aren't much.
Great sound
I’d never heard of Sarah Vaughan but enjoyed this album. Just a real solid, soulful, jazz sound. It was an enjoyable listen on a rainy afternoon.
Sarah Vaughan is known for having a beautiful voice and being therefore one of the icons of 50's Vocal Jazz. This live album features some of her distinct songs but and that is I think the best part about this album, it is fun. There are some accidents happening: a bass falls over, the band plays too long, Sarah forgets the text... but that makes this feel human. It is incredibly fun and easy to listen to. fav: willow weep for me, September in the rain, how high the moon least fav: thou swell Rating: decent to strong 6
Jazz bien jazz, está bueno. Muy buena voz.
Not my style but musically talented
- Not my style of music, but the jazz is simple yet elegant - Favorite tracks: Honeysuckle Rose, Just One of Those Things - Cool to hear how she impersonates Ella Fitzgerald in How High the Moon
Nice but forgettable
Sounded nice, but didn't grab me.
Nice enough laid back jazz
Soulful old jazz, live in a club. Feels like it transports me back to another era.
It wasn't objectionable, but it never really kept me engaged, and I tried listening a couple of times.
Classic Soul Dig the recording
Not my style but was very enjoyable
The live audience is cool to listen to. I enjoy the energy it brings.
Good lady crooning, not common in the genre, outstanding voice but not enough interesting music around her to truly stand out.
This was a really smooth, pleasant listen. Wonderful dinner/cocktail party music, but not a whole lot more than that. I did like the intro at the start, did help set the scene, but the music didn't really grab me. Her voice is delightful though. 3/5.
Lekkere natte herfst of koude wintermuziek
That voice is amazing, i like jazz more that i thought
Cozy jazz club vibes
I can tell already she has one of my favorite singing voices. Billie Holiday has a more angelic soprano and Nina Simone has more gritty character but Sarah Vaughan sounds like the perfect representation of a grade A jazz voice. It sounds as though you are in a very intimate, classic jazz bar. I imagine it just finished raining in the city. I recall the “intro spot” club in tokyo. The live also elevates the listening experience. It's a little long so I was less in it but Jazz feels that way to me sometimes even in the live setting. It sets a mood and pulls you in and gently releases you out from time to time in your own thoughts. Good record and one of my new favorite voices.
Slow 60s jazz. Songs about love. Short and takes a little to get going, but ends well.
Beautiful voice. I prefer things that are a bit more music forward. And definitely with more of a beat. This is sweet background, but it’s not much more than that for me.
Great singing voice. Makes nice background music. I'm not a jazz fan but this is fun in small doses.
I can understand why this album would be celebrated. Sarah Vaughan has an accomplished voice. It was nice mood music. I can imagine playing it in the background over a candlelight dinner with a lover. But it’s not my thing.
Not my favorite style of jazz. She has an amazing voice and I wasn't familiar with her before this album came up, which I suppose is what I want from this 1001 albums list.
The first half was great, became less enjoyable throughout and the yodelling in the last song killed me. A nice introduction to the style but wouldn’t listen to the album again.
-september in the rain, be anything darling but be mine, honeysuckle rose standouts -voice like butter (runs in stairway to the stars to die for) but songs a little samey, i guess that's to be expected for a live lpungey album like this - lovely easy listening, very intimate feel -how high the moon put a real smile on my face 3.5/5
Wonderful voice and the band is on it but I really didn’t vibe with this album. It all started to sound the same and I’m sorry to say that I might be a heathen but I just could not finish it.
A fine jazz album, would be fantastic for a get-together, a dinner party, something smooth in the background. Better as a whole, added 2 songs to 1001 Playlist.....1957 is damned impressive
Jazzy! I enjoyed her improvisation of the lyrics. Music was nice too.
Really loved her voice and interaction with the audience. A fantastic live album. Jazz just isn't my thing .
It's ok, not my style of music. Kind of blended all together in my mind. Some songs were better than others but cant tell which ones
liked this record. Music i would dance with my girflfriend to in the kitchen at 2am
didn't really like it, didn't really hate it. Just not my style of album.
Great voice, don’t love jazz but do love getting to know new artists from genres that I don’t typically listen to.
Enjoyed but Spotify recording wasn’t great
A Werther's Original for the ears.
I’m not really in this lounge jazz but I thought it was well done for what it was.
Definitely a vibe, but the songs are very samey, so the whole album just sorta blurs together.
Feels intimate and personal. A good live recording
Very 1950s, almost sounds like it's out of a fallout game. Coffee Jazz on the instrumentals. Audio quality for a live recording made in the 1950s is very good. Sarah has a very nice voice. The instrumentals are very subdued, which is a good thing because it allows her voice to really shine as the star of the show. 6/10
Recording quality seems great for the time.
not my type of music..
Live album and the crowd noise is a distraction. Nice bluesy/jazzy music other than that.
3/5. This album reminded me a lot of the Ella Fitzgerald albums I would hear my dad play on his stereo while cooking his Sunday “gravy.” Just an enjoyable jazz album.
Very pretty voice. Still against live albums being on this list. But - she is very, very good.
Enjoyed it, again not my usual style but could see me listening to it again if I was in the right mood
Du bon petit jazz vocal, rien de très impressionnant, mais très bien exécuté. Elle a vraiment une très belle voix. Le style est par contre un peu répétitif d'une pièce à l'autre. 7/10
Old style vocal jazz ala Nina Simone. Fine for background music
Sarah Vaughan was an unknown artist to me before this album. Likely because her career is eclipsed by other jazz singers from the era such as Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday. I found this album to be fun but less provoking that others in the genre. Other than that, excellent voice and a fun personality cut out for lounge singing. Standout track: Just one of those things
I think this is a great record but I’d need to listen more to get some tracks to stand out. A 3, but really a 3.5 or 4 w repeated listens
Good, but standard, jazz
Nice chill lounge music, I just don't enjoy jazz enough to feel like it was memorable at all though.
bom
Unbelievable sound production for a 1957 live recording. Smooth chilled jazz vibes, a beautiful voice. Not really my cup of tea though
i mean its alright
Another good one for a smoky bar room and drinks
Nice throaty tone but too lilting and vibrato for my taste.
This was fine and I liked it being live but I'm not sure how much I care about this style of music. I appreciate it but I won't be back in a hurry
Nearly gave this a 4 before the scat singing in the last track, inoffensive background jazz. Her voice was pretty painful on headphones too.
Nice coffee shop background music, but couldn't help feel like a Big Daddy was going to come out and chin me.
Live album. not my particular taste but can appreciate the oozing vocals
A nice album, a bit to lounge for my tastes but she sang well, saved one song to a playlist.
Even though it wasn't the best quality as a live album, I still enjoyed
Excellent but I prefer the work of Ella Fitzgerald
I liked all the silkiness but will pass on the scatting
Jazzy 3/5
Very jazzy.
3/5
её чуть знаю, её вибрато мне не нравится, но тембр в целом приятный
The live album was fun to listen to. Good jazz vibes and enjoyable vocals
This is a nice album and I’ll be sure to listen to this the next time I need to lower my blood pressure. Nothing wowed me though.
Nice laid back jazz live record. But didn’t impress me all that much. 6 out of 10
Cool, not really my thing but she’s still talented. Liked the parts where she improvised
I could listen to this. She has a beautiful voice.
Příjemnej poslech. Paní zpívá moc pěkně 6/10
A lovely little album with a very relaxed vibe, albeit with nothing too special going on compared to studio releases
Nice performance even if I found it not so original. To me it is good record just like many others of that time.
It's alright. Nice voice, I actually enjoyed that it was live, felt like I'm there with the crowd. The last song was pretty bad tho.
The whole album is nice. Really smooth tunes, relaxed vibe, and of course she has an incredible voice. I bet this was amazing watching live. However I found it a bit much all in one go and found it a bit samey by the end.
Not really a jazz person but this was fun, I think if I was there for this recording I'd have a good time but it's not something I can see myself listening to much in the future
I don't really think live albums have a place on the 1001 album list. This one was alright but too long. I haven't really listened to Sarah Vaughan but she's got a lovely voice. A real mellow jazz album even though it's a live album.
Just not my type of music, although I can tell it's technically excellent.
I'm not crazy about live albums, but this one had a little charm. I like her voice and maybe I'll check out more of her stuff after listening to this. I'm not obsessed with anything on here, but it's a nice listen. My favourite song was September in the Rain.
Some nice tracks but the scatting got a little excessive at times.
A wonderful listening experience. Almost felt like I was at Mister Kelly's in person. Nice to listen to once, but this isn't going to be one that I listen to all day today. 3/5
It isn’t really but sound, but I can tell she is extremely talented, and very cool in front of the microphone.
Cool to see an album from the 50s, and a live one at that. Sarah Vaughan is a very talented singer, a beautiful voice who I'm sure made the club go crazy. Musically this is decent although not my favourite type of music. I would enjoy playing the Fallout series to this album.
Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Great voice, the performance feels intimate. Makes me want to sit in the lounge at Mister Kelly's sipping on a whisky and chain smoking some darts.
Love the older style
Jazz. Canta muy bien. Un 3.
It's not my thing, especially scat singing - but I suppose respect is due
Nice jazz album let down by the last song
something a have to say that Sarah have a great performing, feels like you are alone in a bar an this music is in the background, no much to say, its really a good album to give a chance one time.
While I wouldn't choose to listen to this on my own, I did enjoy it far more than I expected to. That's due in part to Vaughan's incredible backing band. Those guys are doing work and the jams they're laying down are just SO tight. They know their job - providing a perfect, seamless, canvas for Vaughan's vocals - and they carry it out flawlessly. The same can't be said for Miss Vaughan. There are some really interesting choices made by the label here. They lead off with an MC telling everyone that Vaughan will be using lyric sheets but then leave in all the times when she completely flubs the lyrics. While that showcases her poise and humor, it also makes her feel like an amateur. I don't hate it but I also don't understand it. Ultimately, the mistakes and the strange choices weren't enough to kill the experience for me. I still enjoyed it. I'll most likely never listen to it again but it was fun while I did listen.
A soulful live jazz album with heart. Not usually my cup of tea, but Vaughan’s velvet voice and charming personality made this one an enjoyable quick listen.
Very chill
Luister er niet snel naar maar lager geven kan ik niet maken - het is een goed jazz album waar vooral de vocals echt uitblinken.
Jazz album opgenomen in muziekclub Mister Kelly's, Chicago. Tracklist bestaat uit populaire pop en jazz uit de eerste helft van de 20e eeuw. Sfeervolle jazz, leuk op de achtergrond. leukste nummer: Willow Weep For Me "Willow Weep For Me" is opgedragen aan legendarische Jazz Age componist George Gershwin.
Sarah Vaughan had a wonderful voice, it's undeniable. But as sweet and warm as it was, the performances recorded for this album didn't have the painful emotion of Billie Holiday's frail timbre, nor did they have the sheer genius of Nina Simone's arrangements. I like female jazz singers when they have a strong flair for the dramatic, what are you gonna do?🤷♂️ Besides, here is another instance of this list singling out a live album so as to put the spotlight on an "important" artist, instead of choosing a studio recording. Which, to me, tends to signify that said artist didn't make any significant strides in the LP format, contrary to most acts popping up in this app on a daily basis. Number of albums left to review: 615 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 188 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 86 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 118 (including this one)
It was alright but all the songs sounded the same.
good but not my style
Meh, not really my kind of music and, IMO, not a good example of the genre It wasn't bad, just not good
Love SV but this is pretty average.
It was nice to get another mellow smooth jazz album instead of a super lively miles Davis type thing. While similar, this was way better than Billie holiday album I got but still has the usual problem of getting samey and old by the end. Fortunately this was a tight 35 minutes and the final track was cute and funny. High 3
Great singer, didn't really feel like a live album 7.7/10
Musica de lobby de hotel
Good
Lovely listen for a Sunday evening. Incredible voice, and a rare treat to hear the live audience mutterings, which adds a lot to the vibe of the record.
Great voice and fun tracks. Not my favourite but good.
She has a Lovely voice and I'm not familiar enough with vocal Jazz but I really enjoyed this
3,5
Reminiscent of Ella's Fitzgerald and Etta James. Jazz trio with a singer. Her vocals are fantastic. It's a bunch of jazz standards in a live setting. Some interesting ad libs when she sings about how Ella sings the song, and how she'll try her best. Sometimes sings about how she doesn't know the words, it's amusing at times. Overall she's a great singer with a good backing band, good album
Felt like I was sitting in a smoky jazz club chain smking marlboro reds and sipping cheap bourbon. Sarah has very angelic voice and a very unique carry thru.
goede ochtendvibes
Leuke eenmalige listen
Nice album. Not really a stand out for me. I think Nina and Ella have firmly claimed this space in the canon. I do like a live album though. Nice energy.
Whenever we get a jazz album I put it off for a few days. It doesn't feel like a classic album at all, I'll never listen to it again, but still a 3. She's got an amazing voice
Nice smooth Jazz. Doesn't feel like a lot of jazz where they just play a bunch of random notes in weird time signatures and tell you you're just not sophisticated enough to understand.
Despite the excellent venue name, this is not my thing at all. Great voice but the music doesn’t make me feel anything. I enjoyed the ad lobbing at the end.
Listened Before? N Good jazz album. Very impressive vocals considering it was recorded live. I liked the humorous break at the end of one of the songs where she essentially quit because she thought she messed it up badly but it was still sounding amazing. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Thou Swell
Favorites: -Just one of those things -Be anything but darling be me -Stairway to the stars
Enjoyable
Sarah Vaughan's At Mister Kelly's was all new music for me. I've heard other artists versions of at least a couple of the tracks, but Sarah Vaughan is a new artist for me. Vaughan is talented, and her talent is even more evident through this live recording. The album was enjoyable but not an album that I'm likely to play again. The jazz vocals of "How High the Moon" are hard on my attention span. The rest of the album was at least okay.
Mooie stem en fijne rustige instrumentatie, had na een paar nummers er wel genoeg van
Crystal clear and beautiful proof that Sarah Vaughan was one of the greatest singers in jazz - and one of the funniest.
Sarah Vaughan is another of the very few artists whose careers long pre-date the mid-50s start of the 1001 list. But she’s the only one of those artists that I wasn’t familiar with before this album. Ultimately, Vaughan has a great voice for jazz, but it's not quite as transcendent as contemporaries like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.
What a voice! I’d definitely be happy to hear Ms. Vaughan sing again.
3.5/5
at mister kelly's was a charming album. small details can go a long way: the falling R on the album cover, the introduction on the first song about the entire audience being mercury recording artists for the night, vaughan needing to find "a key" in the beginning of "willow weep for me". it was extremely easy to listen to this album. vaughan had a lovely voice and sings these songs beautifully with her backing band. but i suppose it was a little too easy because the songs melted into one another. there was nothing bad about this album; it just didn't have much to make it stand out.
I had never heard of Sarah Vaughan, but I was happy to get the chance to learn a bit about her and check out her music! This live album was easy to listen to and pleasant, but again like many albums on this project, it lacked a real "spark" that I look for in live albums. Despite the lack of live energy, I did feel like the performance had a very intimate energy that the recording captured well. And again, jazz isn't really my favorite genre, so I didn't care about this as much as others might. That said, her voice was beyond smooth and made this a fun listening experience in a genre I typically don't care much about.
Vibe
Jazzy
Pleasantly pleasant. It didn’t imprint on my heart, but I enjoyed my time with it. Excellent album cover!
too smooth, i need more passion
I thought it was fine - sort of embodies the type of jazz that's really easy to tune out, unfortunately. But I would imagine seeing it in person would be really magical-- what a wonderful voice & energy.
Good album amazing vocals
Ich kannte weder sie, noch das Album. Stimmgewaltig, der Übereinsatz ihres Vibratos nervt bisweilen, aber mit dem Makel ist sie nicht die einzige.
3.5 stars. Beautiful voice. Fun atmosphere that very much makes you aware it's a live recording. Standout is "September in the Rain"
Singing Jazz. Great voice, but generally not my style
Pretty! Need to give a closer listen but wow.
She sangin tbh 👀
I had never heard of Sarah Vaughan and this live recording is absolutely lovely. Very warm and very enjoyable.
Notalegur jazz úr efstu hillu
Jazz - good
Nice, but didn't do much for me.
Strong, versatile voice. Good morning coffee or rainy day music. Sonics leave much to be desired, obviously.
This was fine, good performance. How high the moon with wrong lyrics was kinda weird. Also weird to have included a live album on this list, surprisingly good recording for 1957
Her voice is big, fierce, powerful, lush. The jazz is light and far away. Feels like an appropriate live album. She and the audience laughing and joking. Free style singing. I might as well have been there. Homey and satisfying, albeit a bit tired and drab at times. Cool album even if it isn't my thang.
The whole " I don't know the words so I'll just make shit up" vibe, well we've all been there haven't we. I can't say I'm much of a jazz fan but this was easy listening while I was working at a difficult and thankless task so, thanks Sarah
It has some issues, like the extended intro telling the audience that there will be a recording happening and that they will be using lyric sheets, and the extended outro of “Willow Weep for Me”, but I feel edified having listened to it.
Not really for me but some beautiful vocals.
Half-paid attention to this while doing other things, but still pretty good! Wouldn't say this album is high up there for me, but I can tell Sarah Vaughan is very talented. Now I understand why Father John Misty got angry at that girl who said she sounded just like her and stuff.
The great thing about live performances is they give you a better feel for the performer's personality. This was an intriguing album in that respect. I especially enjoyed the bit where she goofed a little during "Willow Weep for Me"—she acknowledged it, got a few laughs, and kept rolling, totally unfazed. Good stuff.
Nice and an amazing voice but some seriously dud tracks such as Just a Gigolo and How High The Moon
A talented and soothing album that nails the jazz club craving
good background music
Mister Kelly’s was just the start next year she’ll be at Leeds Fest
Songbird of her generation, super talented. A bit slow for me but too good
Krooner lady.
Music was okay. Didn't listen with much thought. I liked it.
Nice jazz, bit boring
Decent album, just like the comparable ones from this time and genre it was nice and interesting to hear but thats about it
Glad to learn her name.
Stylish.
beautiful (live) jazz album!
good jazz album if jazz were my thing :p
Some solid jazz. It is live and there some songs where they mess up and just kept it in, which is kind of charming. Definitely background music to put on during chores or something but i didn't save any to my spotify.
Great voice, but this album doesn't even seem to be her best. It gets a little repetitive after a while too.
Her voice sounded insane considering this was live. Some good jokes mixed in there too
Now THIS is a great album cover. Sets the mood perfectly for what's about to come. Let's go! After listening, it's a very nice live performance, the couple of blunders that were kept on the final cut where a refreshing touch, something you won't likely see on a modern live album. Particularly liked the slower, smoother numbers like September in the Rain and Stairway to the Stars. Wish there was one or two more emotional songs thrown in, but I guess it would have ruined the mood. Also would have liked the trio to be louder in the mix, especially during the instrumental solos.
An interesting historical record. Never heard of her, but she has a very fine voice for jazz songs. No real classics here though.
Always a spectacular voice.
This album captures live (as amply evidenced in Willow Weep For Me) what one expects from the mythical world of Chicago Jazz. I'm not sure I want to put this in constant rotation but it makes one wish they were there .
I really enjoyed how this was done live and “on the spot” and you could hear her interacting with the crowd. It brings the album to life. She has an incredible voice.
Rating/reviewing this album is a bit difficult for me because even though her voice is honeyed and *gorgeous,* and the music is lively and pleasant…it’s simply not my taste. I’ve just never gravitated to jazz. Even so, it’s easy to tell how talented Vaughan is, and the album feels smooth and cozy. The tracks I like the most are “Willow Weep For Me,” “Be Anything But Darling Be Mine,” and “Honeysuckle Rose.”
It was aight
Lovely voice, her music is sweet and calming. Interesting how it is a recorded live performance instead of a studio album given the year. I enjoyed it.
Great voice, awesome vibes. I feel like I need a Manhattan and a cigar to fully enjoy this album. But still, a little repetitive and probably won’t revisit often or at all.
