Reviews (page 7 of 7)

I understand why this is on the list. It was a cultural phenomenon of a sort, or at least Marilyn Manson was. I’d never actually listened to any of their music before, so for the sake of education, sure. But, despite loving Halloween and heavy metal, there simply wasn’t much for me to grab onto here. The hour of fuzz and screaming eventually just made me feel nauseated. I guess that was the point? Well, that sucks. Big no from me.

absolute shit

Not listening to this piece of shit, wish I could vote 0/5

I refuse to separate art from artist for this one

Its a no from me, Jim

There is no way to “separate the art from the artist”. Manson is a rapist and a creep who won’t be getting money from my streams 👍

This music goes pretty hard, but I just can't get over how dumb, angry, and angsty the lyrics and themes are on this album. It's pretty cringy id you take a step back and actually listen instead of handbanging, but maybe it's a tone and vibe that's more important. Still not enough to win me over though, and I blame the Irresponsible Hate Anthem for leading off the album that way. Angel with Scabbed Wings is pretty sick though.

Unable to write a review. Sorry had a hard time with this one. Wolf

Não gosto deste artista nem da musica que interpreta. Nem me dei ao trabalho de ouvir este álbum!

I will not listen to this piece of shit rapist and no one should 👍 would give a zero if i could

It's hard to separate the creator from the music on this one (purposefully not using art and artist here) because he became such a blown out media phase, but this is not for the faint of heart. This album wasn't as bad as I expected it to be, but it was still a bag of shit, much like Brian/Marilyn himself. It's very clear that Trent Reznor did a ton of work on this and it fully reveals that MM is just a cheap imitation of actual talent. He's doing this for shock value and I never fell for his schtick. He's a creepy, goth, POS trying too hard to be weirder than you. 1 full point for heavy guitar front and center, some thick beat lines, and blending of styles (punk, rock, goth, metal, industrial). I'd be interested in an instrumental-only version of this because the lyrics and delivery are vile and really bring it down (please no more vocal fry). Another .25 for track title "Cryptorchid" but that's as high as I can go, all things considered. 1.25

Here's one to scare the parents. There are maybe a few listenable tracks like "Mister Superstar" and "1996" but the rest is tough to manage. The project idea and subject matter ain't bad but way too much wailing. Can hear some Trent Reznor production which brings the music up a bit but nothing close to his NIN work. I was never into Marilyn Manson and still very much am not after this listen. The guy is just too out there. With the rumors of removing ribs, androgenous body sculpting and the creepy eye ball shit...I'm out. How'd he ever score Dita Von Teese? I'll give credit for taking on the Christian right and not backing down and I get that Ohio blows but good God man...take pill (or less of them). 0.88 anti-stars.

This is one is really tough to review. I tried to go in with an open mind but expected this to be an hour of drivel that I would struggle to get through. While it's overall not something I want to listen to again I'll admit I was surprised that there are actually a few segments of listenable music buried within the 71 minute ridiculous antichrist opera. The main issue is that it is loaded with the expected overdone goth/horrorcore lyrics and bullshit that only seem to serve an angsty teenage audience. As soon as you realize that Marilyn Manson is a blowhard shitbag only trying to upset the norm you realize how obnoxious and stupid the whole thing is. In a post-internet world where shock value is such a normal selling point and the content comes and goes so quickly its easy to see how its/his cultural relevancy is minimal at this point, but would have rocked the world upon release. It's easy to see how some of the rumors were exaggerated and percolated for Marilyn Manson and everything surrounding his act. Even if it's not my cup of tea I guess I would say that Antichrist Superstar is effective as I think it did exactly what Marilyn Manson was going for. I was too young or uninterested in any of this at the time, but I recall some of the cultural zeitgeist and uproar against Marilyn Manson. It seems like an act almost entirely built on shock value and pushing the envelope from name(s) to subject matter to the ensuing act played out on stage. Antichrist Superstar appears to have played it pretty perfectly. The fact that MM and his tour had church protests and state-wide bans seems like it only fulfilled his goal fed the bullshit machine that Marilyn Manson curated. I'm am able to easily ignore nonsense like this and know that its staying power is limited once people realize the entire point of this is to troll or get a rise out of an audience. Marilyn Manson had no choice but to continue to double down on his antics throughout his career which only has so long of a leash. People eventually lost patience and over time he was exposed as a douche which surprised almost nobody. Marilyn Manson will remain as something I ignore and chalk up as stupid bullshit outside of this list. In the long run Antichrist Superstar was about what I expected. 1.36 stars

Not a Marilyn Manson!

Listened Before? Y Edgelord on display. This one didn't age well. Nobody cares anymore. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: None

Nope. Industrial wannabe stuff which Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails does so much better.

Everything I have read about this lot indicated that I would not like the music. So I have never taken much notice of them or their music. So been ‘forced’ to listen to this was not pleasant. As unpleasant as what the concept behind this album and the underlying distasteful nature of Marilyn Manson as a whole. Totally at odds with how I feel today due to Leeds United winning the Championship Trophy. Because of that I feel all fuzzy and warm if also a little drunk. So I refuse to let stuff like this dampen that mood. An album I gladly relegate. 1/5 3/5/25

Nope, just couldn't do it. Garbage

I like lots of extreme and heavy music. This was the first album on this list I skipped parts of (granted I probably listened to 90% but I had enough on a few songs). There were a songs which were quite alright but, but that it's that extreme (most of it is shock for shocks sake) most of it felt like being mildly assaulted audibly. Glad i was justified in never getting into MM as a teenager.

I don’t even know what I’m listening to, this is so bad

Temu nine inch nails. Marilyn Manson wishes he was Trent Reznor

Sorry, maar dit kan echt niet. Ik begin een beetje te twijfelen aan de validiteit van deze hele lijst zo. Niet te harden, dit.

Rapist scum

Yuck. I can't stand Marilyn Manson. He's just starving for attention. Dude wishes he was Trent Reznor so bad, but doesn't have the talent to pull off what NIN did, so he has to resort to shock value and theatrics....and making everything so layered in fuzzy distortion that some people may not notice how shitty of an artist he really is. Fuck Marilyn Manson. Imagine what he smells like?!? My money is on stagnant piss and rotten potatoes. He looks like if a disease (like syphallis) became sentient and grew a body.... Favorite songs: The Beautiful People, Deformography, Tourniquet, Little Horn, The Reflecting God Least favorite songs: Wormboy, Antichrist Superstar, Kinderfeld, Man That You Fear, Untitled 1/5

Didn’t bother because he’s a grim rapist

not listening ew

one unexpected perk of being a zoomer is that i only know about marilyn manson from self-sucking rib removal rumours and sex pest allegations. i’m happy to report, after listening to this album, that i don’t seem to have missed out on anything of value. also….hard r is crazy.

No thank you. Didnt like it then, didnt like it now.

Awful, just bloody awful. What a dick.

I’m neither shocked nor offended, which seems the point of the enterprise. So all that's left is the profound displeasure of the listening experience.

One decent song does not an album make. Manson has always struck me as a person who just desperately wants attention rather than artist with something meaningful to say. Despite my policy of deducting stars for lecherous fucks with credible allegations of sexual assault and emotional abuse against them, I am not allowed to give this album zero stars.

Pointlessly long and aggressive, and tries way too hard to be edgy. This is exactly what metal sounds like to people who don't like metal, it takes away all of the many things that make it such a great genre, and leaves you with this empty husk of metal that's just loud, fast, and aggressive, but not actually meaningful in any way.

Antigood Supercrap

Yuck…I am not a prude, and even setting all moral turpitude aside (and that is a LOT to set aside), I found this just really hard to listen to. It’s the kind of thing that is used to mentally torture prisoners of war, played at 3 AM in the morning at full volume in order to get them to break down. Giving full disclosure, I only listened to parts of the first few songs, and just couldn’t take it anymore. This was just too much work, and listening to music shouldn’t be work…life is too short to endure needless torture. This even made me yearn for yesterday’s ABBA album that was forced upon me by the authors of this list. I just don’t understand how anyone could actually like this. If I could rate it zero stars, I would.

Missed me on the Nword

I was hoping to die without listening to a whole Marilyn Manson album but life if full of little disappointments. Plus, I feel MM wants you to die listening to his music. Like the photoshop cover and word-burrito song titles, this feels like a pastiche meant to evoke a mood it doesn't quite deliver. He seems to be a horrible person, so maybe he should have dug into that. This is all strobe light and no chainsaw. I do see why guitarist John 5's picture is on the wall at my local Guitar Center, for what that's worth.

77 minutes. Geezus. At least most of the records on this list that originated as vinyl releases are over in 45 minutes (except for the rare double lp). I'd somehow forgotten that MM was Trent reznors first signing/protege on his Nothing label. You can definitely hear the NIN influence, but NIN is a much better band. I can see how this appeals to a brooding high school mall goth who reads Camus more than say, Slipknot, but I haven't lived with my parents for 30 years, so I am not the market for this. There are moments where the music interests me but on the whole I'm ambivalent. While a concept album/rock opera about the antichrist is appealing on paper, I'm afraid the prog rock LP 666 by Vangelis/aphrodite's child ( a double LP as long as this one, btw) is my goto in this category.

I decided to pass on this one.

You don't understand, Mom, this is who I really am! It's the late 1990s. You hang out with the misfits at school, buy some pants that are mostly rips and pockets, go home, have a shouting argument with your parents, go to your room, slam the door, and play this album way too loud. It's twenty years later. One of these songs comes up on your shuffle and you cringe. I think the word I was looking for while listening to this album was "edgy". Goshdarnit but this guy is really trying his best to provoke us, but it's all style and very little substance, Marilyn trying hard to emulate the performance personas of David Bowie, but it's all pretension and surface level. Grow up, man. Final thought: halfway through this album it did the worst thing that a shock rock album could do: it bored me. I had to give up and listen to a podcast before I could come back and finish. Actively waiting for an album to be over is a bad sign. One star.

Fuck this album. I hate the music on it's own merits, MM being a predator is immaterial.

1 star for being a piece of shit

Just did not like this and feel kind of icky for having listened in the first place.

I'm normally one who believes in separating the art from the artist, but I didn't have to do that in this case because they both suck! I've never actually listened to a whole Marilyn Manson album all the way through, and I was actually surprised that I didn't hate this more. Granted, I was waffling between a 1 and 2 rating while listening to this, but I expected to hate every single part of it, and I didn't. But at the same time, there's only so much unintelligible screaming I can listen to in one sitting. "The Beautiful People" is objectively a great song, but that's really the only standout here. There were parts of songs that I liked, but then they'd take a weird turn at the end that I didn't care for. Manson really let his ego run wild here, but I think brevity might have helped on this record. I totally understand why this is on here, and Manson did really change the game in a lot of ways, but I just can't get into it. I didn't like his music much when I was younger, and I still don't like it now. I do think, from the songs I've heard, that Mechanical Animals is a better album and if it were here instead, I probably would have rated it a bit higher. And while I didn't hate this, I still didn't like it.

This music is not good for one’s heart and soul. It makes me feel bad. I can’t imagine listening to it and then treating people with love and kindness.

Marilyn Manson and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad album. The Beautiful People is good for about 15 seconds and the UWAAAAH part but everything that follows is just pretty lame and tepid, considering the image Manson tries to project you'd think it'd be interesting. Oh also he's a weird sex creep on top of it. Lame!

Yeesh that album sucked

Better than I expected. Creep gets no more than 1 star

A grotesquely vile human being. The music isn't any good either.

This sounds like mad noise. I'm simply not giving this 1 hour and 11 minutes.

Noise. Utterly unappealing in every way. Its like they took the worst elements of metal and fused it all together.

Well, I guess it could’ve been worse. Still, an unpleasant and creepy listen by a bad guy. High 1.

not a fan

sex pest

This one went right by me when it was released. I never really had a desire to listen to it.

Couldn't listen. Felt queasy.

Got halfway through before reading up on the abuse allegations and getting the ick, but this probably would've gotten this score anyway tbh. Very "look at how edgy I am" kinda shit.

In light of (a) all the recent and not so recent revelations about Brian Warner and (b) the knowledge that all of his songs have no musical, cultural or literary value, I decided not to give him my 0.0001p via a Spotify stream. I listened to In The Aeroplane Over The Sea instead, which gets 5.0 at a bare minimum. It's the greatest album of all time, and my concern that it is not going to be on this project when Marylin Manson is has reached an all time high.

No, just no. 0 if i could.

I'm not going to listen to music by someone who imprisons and tortures women

I’ve never listened to Marilyn Manson before. It took me 1 and a half songs to discover I never wanted to again. I left the album there and will not come back to it.

I am not going to look at this cover any longer then needed.

Ah, não vou escutar mais de uma hora dele não. CPF cancelado. Ainda escuto Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" em playlist já montadas.

Third DNF. Way too long, way too repetitive.

Marilyn Manson sucks!

We don't listen to abusers, also the music is BAD

This ain’t it.

Grating and awful. Should have been called ‘Music To Put You In A Bad Mood’.

Why, why, why do I need to listen to this period, much less before I die. Marilyn clearly has some issues and needs some help. Only positive is his percussionist.

Abhorrent, disgraceful, and bad representation of music in general. At one point, the screaming just turned into nothingness because of how bad it was. It made me realize that some artists are bad and should never had their music published. It wasn’t enjoyable and I wouldn’t force this on anyone to listen at all

Wow congratulations you hate Christians aren’t you cool. I liked the instrumentation and how different each song kinda was. Thought that was really cool and sounded really good. Otherwise there were about two songs that had decent lyrics that weren’t just hatred and vitriol. So much hate in this album. Also his voice is really whiny. Also the album is over an hour long. Also he kinda looks like Nicolas Cage.

between the super long run time, shrill/screaming vocals, anger-fueled lyrics, I felt like I needed to sit in a quiet room for a long time after listening. only positive was that the drummer can play.

Not my type of music.

Pure s*ite. But on even pure.

1/10 No thanks Favourite Song= Least Favourite Song=

Just NO. NEVER. MM's sound is consistently nasty and hateful and makes me cringe - pure torture getting through even one song. Can I give a big fat zero

I only listened because of Trent Reznor. Tawdry. Cheap. Nope.

Is Marilyn Manson the ultimate edgelord? Jesus Christ this was bad. It’s like Nine Inch Nails without the talent or nuance. This is edgy to be edgy bullshit. I did not listen to the whole thing, I gave it a few songs and skipped through the rest. All the songs sound the same so I don’t think I missed anything important.

Hard for me to listen since I know the type of person he is

Listening to Marilyn Manson feels like scratching my own ear drums.

Couldn’t handle this

Some of the music in this isn't bad. I hated the lyrics, both the sound of them and the content. Ultimately, a very negative listening experience for me, even if I can see its merits and how other people might be into it.

Pas pour moi , du bruit , que du bruit et vocifération. Désolé

Didn’t really listen bc it’s so not my thing

Didn't care for this one

Nope. Not going to listen. I’m open minded, open to all music but this creep can fuck off.

Aaaaaggghhhh - 1

I tried. I honestly gave it a shot.

Didn’t like him when I was a teenager and he was super popular. Certainly don’t like him now. 1/5

too much shocking for me. Verry special in the 90ies, maybe necessary, but definitively not to hear before I die.

Just no.

This was a chore to listen to. Edgelordiness for edgelord sake. Feels like a mad lib of charged words like ‘orgy’ ‘blood’ ‘abortion’ ‘god’ and ‘death’. Shitty guy mid music.

Sorry on principle not gonna listen to this absuer

I'm not going to give my thoughts on the actual album because being a horrible person overshadows all of Marilyn Manson's contributions to music. This is not a case where we need to figure out how to separate the art from the artist - at this point, there are plenty of musicians that can make stuff that's just as good or better, so as the first step we need to just stop giving him attention.

Hard pass.

yikies.

Just garbage

No, Marilyn Mason is a garbage human

Remember when Bowling for Columbine came out, and everyone was like "oh Marilyn Manson is actually a normal and thoughtful dude". But now we know that he's actually a psycho violent abuser. So this time I guess our parents were right to clutch their pearls.

I hated the album cover. I hated the singing. I hated the lyric content, with abuse-coded gems such as "I lift you up like the sweetest angel/I'll tear you down like a whore". And none of this is helped by the awfulness that has come to light about Manson himself and his disgusting abusive tendencies because the violent lyrics feel way too on the nose. I'm glad I've finally heard music from a household name, but am also glad to never ever listen to it again.

Лучшая песня - The Reflecting God.

an evil creep with some admittedly catchy/hooky stuff here buried under a ton of mediocre shit, in addition to being way way too fucking long (do you really expect me to buy this as some kind of 'masterpiece,' marilyn?) and as always his shtick is just so performative and lame. considered in a vacuum it's probably actually a 2 but I'm feeling particularly ungenerous towards it

Another person who wont get clicks from me, because separating art from the artists is stupid.

It was a struggle to get through it, because musically it's mediocre/boring, lyrically it's abusive and nothing I can get into it and his voice is also annoying. It gets a 1 also because it is a 72-minute long album that seemed even longer than it actually was.

It's depressing how many albums come up on here where your first thought is - how exactly should we approach rating work by this [abuser/misogynist/homophobe/racist- insert as appropriate] work?

This was a struggle.

NIN if they sucked musically and as people. I love a lot of industrial stuff but god damn this guy SUCKS. Trent Reznor’s skills can’t even save him here - Trent is just the better musician and MUCH better human being.

On one hand it’s important to include challenging albums on the list. On the other hand this album is shit and Marilyn Manson is a bit of a tool

Trash just like this trash human being

yikes, not what I want

Bad man, bad music.

I dislike how much I liked this album, but also Brian Warner is a creep so it gets a 1

I tried but I hate it so much

Sometimes you just know when to say no

No comment. Just gonna say that this didn’t age well after all the allegations came out, and I’m not gonna listen to it.

🤡🤡🤡

I never liked this when it came out, didn’t care for anything he did later, and absolutely despise abusers and rapists. Won’t listen now and get him any royalties. I remember this as being really cheesy and over the top edgelord crap anyway.

This just bad music.

Music is bad and Marilyn Manson is a creep.

Oh, shit!

2 stars for the music, -1 star for being a shit human being.

The Beautiful People Never been a huge fan of Marilyn Manson. Not into screaming music. I didn’t find anything inherently wrong with the album tho and can understand why people like it. But just not for me.

in the this album sucks so much i wont even finish the poem

See under Slipknot, below.

Booo tomato tomato

Alltof löng plata. 90s gítardistortion og öskursöngur draga mann hressilega niður, sem og seinni tíma ásakanir gegn Manson. Það er helst að þetta nær rytmískt áhugavert á köflum, Beautiful people hefur ákveðinn sjarma og Man that you fear, en svo er þetta eintóm læti. Feginn að þetta er búið.

The only positive thing I can say is that it’s better than Korn? The attempt at badassery falls flat with me. Some of the songs have great baselines and rock pretty hard. It’s not as bad I I thought it would be. But it’s bad.

Listened to enough of it to realize some parts are alright musically, but he still sucks. Creeps don’t get stars.

Sinnloses Rumgebrülle! 0/5

Tedious, overblown, edgelord nonsense from someone that unsurprisingly turned out to be a massive wrong’un.

Talk about a fad. He's aged about as well as Kid Rock.

1. hate anthem - 1 2. beautiful people - 1.5 3. dead to the uuorld - 1.5 4. tourniquet - 1 5. little horn - 1 6. orchid - 1 7. deform - 1 8. uuormboy - 1 9. zuperztar - 1 1. angel - 1 12. kinderfeld - 1 13. antichrizt - 1 14. 1996 - 1 15. decay - 1.5 16. god - 1 17. fear - 1.5 18. untitled - 0

Let's get the "artist is a garbage human being" portion out of the way first. I do not follow Marilyn Manson's intimate details, but I know enough to know that the creepy guy persona wasn't a persona. Gross. On to the "separating the art from the artist" portion. I like the overall sound, but I hate the lyrical delivery. I just don't dig the theatrical-melocidal thing going on here. Thankfully, Nine Inch Nails has me covered. Then there's the lyrical content. I can't get past the "edgy kid trying to be edgy", and the N-word dropped in the first song didn't help (I grasp the context, I just don't care). I'm sure this was groundbreaking at the time, but now I can only think of THE EDGINESS. The worst thing about the edginess is that it's dull. I'm not offended, I'm bored, which is worse. I followed this up with The Downward Spiral to get the bad taste of this album out. Liked Tracks: - The Beautiful People - Tourniquet

not even interested in listening due to him being a pos

I dont enjoy this. it serves as distrubing art, bit when life imitated art, its too disturbing, aspecially when its influential on the impressionable. Its just soundtrack stuff really. Stright onto the NO pile, and back to other albums for me.

When Marilyn Manson was first big (around the time of this record), I had a friend whose teenage daughter was rally into the band. My friend, somewhat concerned, asked if Marilyn Manson really was as bad as the press were making out. "No," I replied "it's shock value. It's really just the Alice Cooper schtick, updated for the 90s." And, on that level, they did a pretty good job. Brian Warner was smart enough to identify issues that would really trigger parents and other squares, and seem like a proper rock and roll rebellion for alienated youth market. If you want to see how uncomfortable it made the mainstream, watch their performance of "Beautiful People" at the 1997 MTV Awards. The audience is NOT digging it; this was genuinely the complaint of the outsider. And they had a powerful look and a stomping sound (largely courtesy of various members of Nine Inch Nails and Dave Ogilvey from Skinny Puppy) and a charismatic frontman and a bunch of free media based on controversy. I'm sure they ran a pretty compelling live show. But it's teenage alienation all packaged up to sell. Your parents will hate it, but they still want to sell you the CDs and tickets and t-shirts. Marilyn Manson are not as genuinely dangerous or outside the mainstream as, say, Skinny Puppy or any one of the myriad of industrial rock bands that came before this. But this album was massively influential, not necessarily musically, but in terms of fashion, the look, and the playing the media for column inches. Personally, I think the following album "Mechanical Animals" was a much more interesting record than this, both musically and thematically, but "Antichrist Superstar" was the record that made the big cultural impact. Now, here's the problem. As the Beastie Boys point out in their excellent retrospective documentary, if you play a part long enough (even in satire), you become that person. And I'm pretty sure that's what happened to Marilyn Manson. Too many drugs, too much bad sex, too much violent rebellion and debauchery, and now it seems that the insightful and intelligent Brian Warner has devolved into full-time power-freak rapist and fascist Marilyn Manson. He even says in his own autobiography "Antichrist Superstar was about using your power, not your misery, and watching that power destroy you and everyone else around you." Is he still play-acting on this record? Can't quite tell. The horrible truth is that Brian followed his thematic interests down a very dark hole, that led to some disgusting and appalling behavior, particularly towards women. This is not just an artistic statement about destruction, but a statement of intent, which he followed up. And he got away with it for a very long time. I was wrong. Marilyn Manson is not Alcie Cooper. He isn't play acting shock and rebellion. He _is_ that thing, and I can't listen to this any more. And I _like_ industrial metal. There is an ongoing debate I have about when the moral deficiencies of the artist means we can't enjoy the art any more. Marilyn Manson crosses the line for me, because the art is all about his terrible behavior. it is celebration and mission statement of his cruelty and destructive behavior. He was hiding in plain sight. Maybe he hadn't fully crossed over right at this point, but this was him telling us all what he was going to do. And I can't be complicit in it.

Actively despise this arsehole and everything he represents. The horrible music is an irrelevance at this point. I listened to it but I didn't wanna. ☠️ People talk a lot about separating art from the artist, often to justify continued enjoyment of the things they like while becoming more aware of the personal failings of some creators. With this guy there's no need for that though, it's a singularity of degenerate, provocative crap and the sick scumbag hiding in plain sight who led its creation. No amount of slick production can mask that. It doesn't give me much pleasure to note that time has proved me right on this one.

Not for me.

Nope. Hated it back in the day. Not listening.

I don't really like this genre. Favourites: the beautiful people, dried up tied and dead to the world. I understand it's art and everything but it's not that deep Brian. How are you gonna be edgy and be named Brian. Also apparently they did drugs almost constantly to make this album because they needed a ""violent and hostile environment suited to the album's content"" it's never that deep bro you didn't need to do all of that. There are also mega controversies connecting Mr. Brian to murders (done by other people) and assaults (done by him) which cannot be a good sign even if he's innocent. I hate the album cover and I hate the ending of antichrist superstar. Music itself isn't as bad but I don't like the lyrics or Mr. Brian. I was also just informed by my wife that Mr. Brian (white man) over here has said the n word hard r multiple times (3 times just in the first song). Brian makes me nauseous. 1/5

1/5. I would rather shit my pants at convocation than listen to this again.

A total of sixteen people have made various allegations against Manson,[3][310] including five accusations of sexual assault.[311]

I listened to the first 2 tracks, wanting to make an effort to complete this challenge and listen to all the albums from beginning to end in full - but it was so awful I gave up for most of the day deciding I just didn’t need this trash in my ears and brain. I did end up going back and skimming the rest - and I’m now annoyed at myself for giving this any extra thought, reading about the band and about the lead singer, and in the end giving it more of my headspace than it deserves. Putting aside Warner being an abusive disgusting creep, the lyrics are just awful (as in both content and also just lame - ‘oh look at me look at me, I’m so scary, and weird, and random, and spooky’) and I just don’t think the music is a good example of the genre either. I sometimes enjoy a bit of industrial. This is just hype. So it’s just gross to me on multiple levels and I have no desire to ever hear it again.

Real crap

Punk, live 1998 -> 1

Aaaaaaargh ferme ta gueule! Je skip l'album parce que j'assume que Manson sait rien faire d'autre de sa vie que gueuler dans un pauvre micro et violer des mineurs

What ben said -1 star. This album was absolute dog meat. Idc if it had 9 inch nails influence. it sucked bc the lyrics were shit and i hated it. longest album ever. fuck

Really not my thing at all

Horrid

This music gives me a visceral reaction, like staring at a seed pod or other Trypophobia inducing pattern. My skin feels tense and nausea builds in my throat. I can continue to listen, but I know my blood pressure and gag reflex will dissipate if turn it off. I will say that I liked the drums in Beautiful People but the whole album feels so forced... \"look at me, I'm angry and have dark thoughts!\" being screamed at me for over an hour is simply unpleasant.

An awful album by a disgusting freak. Edgy for the sake of edgyness, 0 artistic merit anywhere.

Marilyn Manson is obviously a fucked up and disgusting human being, but I ignored that as much as possible and focused solely on the music. It actually started way less shit than I expected, some of the riffs were pretty good, but the lyrics and the music is just still garbage. Was actually close to a 2 for me as it wasn't absolutely terrible and I could see myself listen to this if I'd be in some random satanic mood, but first of all I have the option to just listen to better metal, and also this was just way too long to endure, not to mention the ear cancer I got from the end of 'Mister Superstar'. One.

Awful, an insult to music.

👎🏼

Joining the group late, I had a lot of catch-up work to do. I “saved” MM for last because to be honest I was dreading the thought of listening to screaming and compressed music for over an hour. The tone of his voice sounds like the hounds of hell, which I guess is the point. Like most, I have always loved “The Beautiful People” and that song holds up and fits this style perfectly. The rest of it I can do without. He did an excellent job with covering “Tainted Love” later, but those two tracks are pretty much all the love I have for MM.

This was an appropriately titled album as it was a hellish experience trying to listen to it.

Sometimes it's difficult to rate music because it can be hard for me to separate my knowledge of the terrible things the musician has done from their talent and skill. Luckily, this time it's not hard at all, because Marilyn Manson's music sucks as much as he does.

the beautiful people and tourniquet are okay but otherwise hard to listen to

Jesus christ is my savior!

No not for me. Does anyone like this?

Never liked his music, never enjoyed his shows. Definitely not a ‘must hear’ album.

I am trying to listen to this. It's difficult - I even once enjoyed some of Black Sabbath's stuff, dark and cacophonous as that was. But this is just junk with no redeeming social or musical value - it only has (had) marketability, and that fact is a little disconcerting.

I was wanting to like this, but I found the screamo vocals just annoying. And the compressed guitar sounds were predictable and now quite outdated. I’m truly dumbfounded as to how this album and artist received such attention throughout the 90s. While the lyrics are pretty effed up, today they would probably just pass as adolescent. I imagine this is the music you use to take hostages or torture people to. Shock rock then, schlock rock today.

An album that makes you feel like you’ve probably been added to some type of watch list. I def was NOT allowed to purchase this in 1996 so have never listened to it. Honestly I expected more based on how much press this got. Nothing impressive musically. The vocals, if we’re calling them that, are annoying. And lyrics that I’m sure were shocking at the time are now just kind of pathetic. Makes me sad that this resonated so much with a group of our generation, they deserved better. To me this is the epitome of someone who got way more success than they should have. You guys know about his ribs right?

NO NO NO

Very emo

Sowas höre ich mir nicht an.

Honestly couldn’t even make it all the way through. Disgusting and terrible screaming vocals with occasionally interesting guitar parts.

Meh. I'd maybe give it 2-3, but it turns out he's a rapist, so no.

Couldn’t get through it.

Will not listen

I think I'm starting to regret doing this project. First of all, fuck Marilyn Manson. Second of all, fuck this album. It's not good. I was hoping that I could at least separate the art from the artist by enjoying the album, but the album isn't good enough for me to do that. I'll start with my one positive. The sound and the instruments are mostly tolerable. The guitar riffs, drum playing, and bass lines aren't that bad. There are, however, moments of noise. Painful noise. Painful noise that brings back bade memories from that Liars album that I listened to a few weeks ago. Still, the musical style of this album isn't particularly horrible. Everything else though? Not good. The vocals, while varied between songs, are never enjoyable to listen to. The pacing is pretty bad as well. This thing just does not end. Finally, my biggest problem, the writing is just gross. I think to look at what makes this album suck so much, we have to compare it to another 90s industrial concept album that Trent Reznor helped produce, that album of course being The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails. I think that the main thing that makes that album work for me is that it's clearly a story about a fictional character. There may have been some elements derived from Trent Reznor's personal experiences, but it's still a clear story about a character. Antichrist Superstar doesn't feel like a story about a character. It just feels like Marilyn Manson himself screaming about his own life, which doesn't paint him in a flattering light. I know he was supposed to be this counter-culture icon or whatever, but it just feels gross to listen to this because it gives off the energy of a whining incel. Also, he says the n-word in the first song. Why the fuck did he think that was a good idea? Is he stupid? I get why this album's on here. The album and band do have the cultural significance to back its inclusion. However, it still sucks and I never want to listen to this creep's "music" ever again. 1/5.

I have never listened to Marilyn Manson before. I always thought it was just the next step after Alice Cooper, without humor. Very negative. Very fatalistic. Very hopeless. Not a style of music I’m all that interested in. And yet…I didn’t hate it. Can’t say I enjoyed it but at least I have heard it, so I can say it was crap based on hearing it not hearing about it.

Shockingly awful

SCREAMING

Jesus christ (hah!) this was a slog. Each song sounds exactly the same, and there are lot of songs. If the devil does have all the best tunes then Mr Manson must have sold all his to someone else.

Not for me. Would give zero if I could

This is just shit

I found Marilyn Manson a a challenging listen when I was actually into this genre of music. This is even worse than I remember.

EWWWWW: this shit just stunk. It was full of random ass noises and screaming and not a pleasant listen to the ears. I just didn't like it at all and I think everyone can pretty much agree with me on that. Unimaginative or arguably too imaginative to be good. Bad.

Another one of these albums that seriously make you question what this list is about. My life would be a whole lot better if I hadn't listened to this album, it's terrible. Another one of those albums that should have a zero score but that's not possible

Two chords, the same level of distortion and yelling into the microphone. People may still talk about his appearance and his publicity stunts (along with his felonies), but his "music" had zero staying power. This guy managed to be an even bigger loser than the losers who thought listening to him made them scary and edgy.

Junk "music" wasting my time

One hopes all the Goth (or whatever) kids who thought they needed this got therapy instead or outgrew this shitshow. Rocks more directly and here and there almost tunefully especailly in comparison to NIN. Still, it's nearly as execrable overall. MM certainly belongs in the second-tier of alleged devil worshipers in pop and rock – and in just a few decades seems every bit as pedestrian as Ozzy and Alice Cooper. Didn't he realize that the extreme positioning was going to make his farewell and reunion tours even more embarrassing? One suspects it wasn't a sufficient number of middle fingers that he lacked but rather sufficient talent. As for the opera concept or narrative, who cares?

This is bad bad

Never listened to Marilyn Mason before. Never will again. Unless there is another album on the list. Then that will be the last album.

Sounds like a bad person And a quick glance at the other reviews (followed by a rapid search on google) confirms the impression. Ew. I think we should be able to distinguish between art and artist, but, unlike Hitler, whose art I appreciate, I hate this music deeply. Simply ungraceful voice with bland instrumentals, overall a bad experience. He's just a criminal that makes poor music

Not even going to attempt to listen to this

What a load of shite from a sex offender. It's as grim as he is

Can't rate this anything higher than 1, what an awful person.

The production is so good but the edgy bullshit is so performative and fake. All shock value disguising otherwise pretty basic takes on societal issues.

could not be arsed, did not like

What a racket. I love rock music but this is just puerile shouting.

absolutely not no words describe how terrible this was.

While I am all-in for anything that mocks/derides the evil hell that is the Christian right and fascism ... on a daily basis I'm more all-in for listenable music. This was never - and still ain't - it. Utterly unlistenable. 1/10 1 star.

You couldn't pay me to listen to this 0/5

Rapist shit

Rapist

I get why it's here, but I really wish it wasn't.

More of a best of artist with some admittedly great songs but also minus all the stars for turning out to be a rapey shit bag.

@ in a row that are not for me. Not a fan of the screaming vocal style Marilyn uses so often. Music is OK but.... I gave up after 8 songs. 1.5 stars

lol this is so embarrassing. There are obviously some strong songs here but even tho Marilyn Manson is a huge piece of shit, I had been thinking of going through his records recently and this was laughably bad to me. Woof.

The marking scale needs minus points to accurately rate shit like this.

Was always just about the image, only aimed at those who wanted a lifestyle or look, the actual music was always an afterthought and terrible.

Childish lyrics ruined some good work by the rest of the band

Det är jävligt dåligt. Han skriker ju bara.

More than being offensive or otherwise affecting this is just dull. There are moments which, if given to a better artist, could be great. But unfortunately they’re given to Marilyn Manson, and we’re listening to it.

Lame och klyschigt, både i musik och ord. Påminner lite om Eminem, toppexempel på 90 tals cringe. Så skönt att det tog slut

lmao. no.

Skipping this one. Fuck this habitually abusive rapist fuckstick and his music.

HL: “The Beautiful People”, "Man that You Fear", "Tourniquet" Funny that for the last two albums, I used the descriptive word "spooky" before getting Marilyn fucking Manson. Let me be clear: I can appreciate elements of dread, foreboding, supernatural creatures, etc. in my music, movies & other art. One example is NiN's The Downward Spiral, which is a kind of psychological horror. What I don't like is in-your-face blood & guts horror, which this album does much better than it does the former. I guess dread and nausea kinda feel the same. Though it's a major part of the package, if I remove the controversy, the Shock Rock of it all, I'm left with some interesting passages & songs ("Cryptorchid" is neat I guess), and a LOT of mediocre 90s nu metal. I heard the whole thing in one sitting at least, which I couldn't quite do with albums like Slipknot (1999) and Roots (1996). While I can’t pretend to love much of this, at least the concept of writing a concept album from a villainous perspective (as opposed to disturbed, like the aforementioned T.D.S.) sparks my interest.

whacky herrea he is whacky...tarkoittaa pakko olla hyvä artiste! pimeys...olen pimeydessaäää...kärsimys...kuolema... pakko olla hyvä artiste... uskomaton topikaalinen holy ja hän käyttää meikki tuoteta...näyttää oudolta henkilöltä mahtava artiste... mahtavaa mahtavaa sointua... man that you fear

yeah this music is bad and marilyn manson is also a bad person. easy 1

Fucking horrendous lyrics, instrumentals, and singing (?)

Pure gimmick with ZERO actual musical ability. What a complete cunt.

no stars for rapists

I was waffling between 1 and 2 stars for this album, but even trying to separate the artist from the art, I don't think this album is anything special. the songs are repetitive and overstay their welcome, as they're all just different tweaks of the same shock rock and (proto-)nu-metal-esque filler tracks. Shocked that some critics at the time hailed this as the best album of the 1990s or the album that killed grunge. Frankly embarrassing. favorites: I guess the beautiful people and cryptorchid

Meh. I was bored by the whole shock show in high school. It hasn't aged well. There are some interesting Industrial records from this era but this isn't one of them.

J'ai écouté les 2 premières, puis décidé à l'unanimité de bloquer l'artiste sur spotify.

un mauvais moment à passer 😃

Just shit but someone might like it

If I’d been old enough this would have turned me into Billy Graham. Gee whiz. White guy saying the n word right out of the gate, music is unpleasant to the ears, and the guy is a predator. Not going back to this one. Dadgum.

This album makes me feel gross. I was not excited to see this album come up as today's recommendation. I've heard several tracks from Manson, including at least one from this album. I'm not Manson's target audience, and I could not recommend this album to anyone. I couldn't finish most of the tracks, and part way through I stopped listening to the album. I'm sad that I have wasted time thinking about Manson.

Sadly, I don’t totally hate it, but it’s pretentious and boring and I do hate the guy for being an asshole towards women.

Would give this zero stars if I could. Complete trash. Couldn't even finish listening to this disaster.

As another review said “ What a weird, touchy, rapey, gothy creep.” I think this should be taken off the list. I listened to a few seconds of the songs but that’s it I do not want to support this person. I skipped this album. I read some of the lyrics to one of the songs- they were so fucked up. Anyone who likes this music (and knows what the lyrics are saying) have something thing with them. No healthy happy person spreads hate.

Etova tyyppi viimeaikaisten uutisten valossa. Jätän toistaiseksi kuuntelematta.

mm seems like a pussy, none of this is “scary” or challenging, i dig industrial guitars so some of that is cool but otherwise it’s for clowns

Tryhard. Go listen to NIN, KMFDM, Nitzer Ebb and literally hundreds of other better bands

horrible.

I am not looking forward to this. Scumbag who already makes middling music any way? I would just skip it, but if I listened to Kanye I should probably listen to this. What, the guy who made music like this is a terrible person? Color me shocked! I was actually thinking about a two star with this one, as I didn't mind some small parts of some small songs, and the production value is pretty good. It reeks of 90s, which if that's your thing, then here you go. But then it just kept going on and on, with no song really feeling that different from each other. Whoa, he screams a bit, then at the end of the song various background noises start happening that are supposed to be eerie and uncomfortable to listen to? It judt becomes mind numbing by song number 9. Issue is the album then goes on almost double that. I also soley blame this album for the people who have "no lives matter" bumper stickers on their 2003 Honda Accord, as if they think they're edgy. All of that plus Mairlyn Mandon himself makes this a pretty definitive one star. God I hate Nu Metal.

I'd give it a 0 of I could

Just couldn’t get into it, not for me

my first 1! awful music made by an awful person. edgy and shocking just to be edgy and shocking, not point to make other than “ooo look at me arent i scary”. baaaaaaad

File under Wankers, epic. Not interested in this copycat Gary Glitter

I try and approach every album with an open mind and let the music speak for itself and avoid the misgivings of the artist in rating the music. Nope. This was torture and an absolute struggle. Like the other 1 star albums I have on this list, it has all the things I dislike: bad vocals, metal, stupid fucking lyrics, way too long, being from the 90s. It doesn't surprise me I hated this album since Trent Reznor is on it and I really do not care for NIN. Plus the whole thing with these artists in trying to be shocking or deep or some shit like that. Seriously it's so lame. Named after serial killers? I'm offended at how pathetic that is. It's very edgelord.

Hated it, angry heavy metal

Not a whole lot of variation, just industrial gloom all the way through. It would be fine if this was a 30-40 minute album, but it’s way too long, and there’s a lot of filler here. Honestly needed a break halfway through.

Brian Warner is by all accounts a pretty shitty human being. Difficult to separate the "artist" from the "art", when his stage persona and narrator are equally pretty shitty. The album is also pretty shitty.

This album contains a song about beautiful people written by one of music’s ugliest personalities.

nein. ich finds auch nicht so dolle

Not a fan.

Ógeð

Glam heavy metal is still heavy metal. I can only take it in small doses.

can't listen to marylin Manson ever since he called that dude from smashing pumpkins a zipperhead my perception of him is forever ruined

Marilyn Manson seems like a joke to me.

No thanks.

Lauter Schrott.

Y'know, I didn't like MM's schtick when I was a teenager, and I like it even less now. Plus there's been too many questionable human beings in the list this week. So I'm giving my lowest mark yet.

I'm pretty sure Trent Reznor now bitterly regrets ever having associated his name with this pathetic clown. But even before the accusations of psychological and sexual abuse, even before all those unsavory extramusical events surrounding the story of this psycho parading as an "artist", it was so obvious how poorly this music would age in a very short amount of time. Behind the shock glock shtick, behind the lame posturing and the make-up barely concealing the lack of any relevant ideas on a musical standpoint, everything in this record overblown to the extreme actually sounds... bland. To go back to Reznor, what we have here is a third-rate version of Nine Inch Nails at best (knowing the original is not necessarily for everyone anyway). Like horror films that fail to scare their viewers, and are not even fun to watch if you just want to have a good laugh with friends, it's just an embarassing moment. A waste of time. In the age of Korn and Nu-metal, I guess sone teenagers desperately trying to look edgy could fall for this ridiculous circus. I'm also pretty damn sure that 99% of those teenagers now grown to adults never return to this album. Or *any* album by Marilyn Manson--I do seem to remember a few stronger melodies on *Mechanical Animals*, so I might feel generous enough to give that one two stars if it ever pops up here. But no more than that. The only thing that seemed to redeem MM at the time was that it was the target of those Christian fundamentalist lunatics obssessed with dogma and self-repression. Those fanatics obviously can't understand art. But since MM himself doesn't understand what *good* art is, why should we bother trying to redeem him now? Especially today, with all the news... ? Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 900 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 52 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 27 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 22 (including this one)

Wow. It's... edgy? I don't know another way to describe this album. From the first song I felt like it was just trying to be crude and weird for the sake of being crude and weird. There just didn't seem to be any point to the lyrics, at least to me. Not my cup of tea at all. But maybe it would have clicked more if I was an angsty teenager when I listened to it for the first time. I really tried to listen to the whole thing, but it just wasn't in the cards for me.

Definitely don't understand this type of music, maybe you had to be there.

Kao separate the art from the artist al mu art nije nešto tak da nema potrebe. Ponosno dajem svoju prvu jedinicu.

I always try to separate the art from the artist. I can’t really do that here. Manson is as shitty as what he sings about. Fuck him. Fuck his shitty albums.

I felt negative vibes as soon as the first song started. What a load of crap.

Oh ffs...... Idk if I can listen to this One song in, can I turn it off yet? The lyrics are fucking terrible. How os this tapey nerd so popular?

03/02/2022 Didn't listen. Fuck this creep.

Boring ngl

Hated 25 years ago when it got out. Still hated it now that I listened to it again

It took me more than 24 hours to deal with this thing. A lot of pauses. Maybe 1 song was OK.

Didn't even bother

Very bad. 2/10

Whiny tosh

Ugh. Shut up, Brian. I'd rather listen to Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Alice Cooper and Pink Floyd.

superkass

Oh, fuckin' hell.

Total trash.

Alleen het bekende nummer pakt me vanwege het tempo en de baslijn, de rest vind ik niet echt spannend

Antichrist Superstar is an unexpectedly cohesive album from a silly shock metal band and will stand as Marilyn Manson's definitive statement.

toma no cu

Hell no

Cringe. Apoio a ideia de fazer música anticristã pra se opor ao status quo, mas esse album é mto cringe.
