Antichrist Superstar is the second studio album by American rock band Marilyn Manson, released in 1996. I am trying to listen to this. It's difficult - I even once enjoyed some of Black Sabbath's stuff, dark and cacophonous as that was. But this is just junk with no redeeming social or musical value - it only has (had) marketability, and that fact is a little disconcerting.
It would probably be better if I could hear the lyrics.

I was wanting to like this, but I found the screamo vocals just annoying. And the compressed guitar sounds were predictable and now quite outdated. I’m truly dumbfounded as to how this album and artist received such attention throughout the 90s. While the lyrics are pretty effed up, today they would probably just pass as adolescent. I imagine this is the music you use to take hostages or torture people to. Shock rock then, schlock rock today.
An album that makes you feel like you’ve probably been added to some type of watch list. I def was NOT allowed to purchase this in 1996 so have never listened to it. Honestly I expected more based on how much press this got. Nothing impressive musically. The vocals, if we’re calling them that, are annoying. And lyrics that I’m sure were shocking at the time are now just kind of pathetic. Makes me sad that this resonated so much with a group of our generation, they deserved better. To me this is the epitome of someone who got way more success than they should have. You guys know about his ribs right?
I can only handle so much Manson. An hour+ is too much. Rounding up to a 2.
LOL I thought maybe I’d enjoy this album. I did not. Would things have been different in my middle school years? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe fuck yourself. Anyways, this would have been a 1* but I gotta give props to the opening two songs. Still a sucker for The Beautiful People. [shrug emoji] 1.5/5

"Antichrist Superstar" is the second studio album by American rock band Marilyn Manson. Industrial metal, industrial rock, alternative metal and gothic rock are the assigned genres. I'd agree although you could also name just about any metal sub-genre. The album is a rock opera/concept album and the first of a trilogy with a story "revolving around a supernatural being who seizes all power from humanity to initiate an apocalyptic end event; a demagogue driven solely by resentment, misantropy and despair and uses his position to to destroy the world." I'm glad I read that before listening cause it would have taken a long time to figure that out. There's also pretty blatant commentary on the religious right and conservative politics. Four producers were used including lead singer Marilyn Manson and Trent Reznor. It was a commercial success hitting #3 in the US (#73 UK) and had high critical praise and acclaim. The album is divided into three parts. Fans cheering opens "irresponsible Hate Anthem." The band kicks in hard. This song is actually from the future in the antichrist superstar days. A good use of start-stop. The proper first song to this story and a pretty big hit is "The Beautiful People. The thumping beat. Manson whispering. Very industrial sounding as Mansion takes it up to the screaming level. The main character is a worm at this stage and he's sees the evil and the hypocrisy in the so-called beautiful people. "Tourniquet" has long guitar notes which eventually turns to almost chainsaw sounding. The worm is used up at this point and wants to become something but sure what. The second part starts; the first song that caught my attention was "Deformography." The songs keep building and with heavy percussion and very mechanical sounding. The worm wants to get back at the beautiful people. By this point, it is clear that Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails are a major influene musically. They actually get a nice guitar riff going in "Mister Superstar." Layered guitars and a idiosyncratic drum beat. Our worm is a rock star now. The band cranks it up a notch on the next song "Angel with the Scabbed Wings." Not only a rock star but the antichrist . And we head into the last part with "Antichrist Superstar." Crowds chanting. Ominous guitar power cords. The rise of the antichrist; he is the hydra. Why not go full on thrash metal and they do in "1996." Obviously, Ministry fans. This appears to be political and religious commentary of the times; there was a recent presidential election. The album ends slower with "Man That You Fear." A piano. It's dramatic. Of couse, it ends with a minute of feedback. I think this was his life's reflection: "the boy you loved became the man you feared." This is an evil sounding album. Great production with Reznor and the others. It is a convoluted story but he does attempt to stay within the story and also comment on current events. The music is mostly industrial but has elements of rock and metal. I'd say if your a Nine Inch Nails' fan, you'll probably like this. However, it does fall in the "too long, CD-era" category.

I think I'm starting to regret doing this project. First of all, fuck Marilyn Manson. Second of all, fuck this album. It's not good. I was hoping that I could at least separate the art from the artist by enjoying the album, but the album isn't good enough for me to do that. I'll start with my one positive. The sound and the instruments are mostly tolerable. The guitar riffs, drum playing, and bass lines aren't that bad. There are, however, moments of noise. Painful noise. Painful noise that brings back bade memories from that Liars album that I listened to a few weeks ago. Still, the musical style of this album isn't particularly horrible. Everything else though? Not good. The vocals, while varied between songs, are never enjoyable to listen to. The pacing is pretty bad as well. This thing just does not end. Finally, my biggest problem, the writing is just gross. I think to look at what makes this album suck so much, we have to compare it to another 90s industrial concept album that Trent Reznor helped produce, that album of course being The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails. I think that the main thing that makes that album work for me is that it's clearly a story about a fictional character. There may have been some elements derived from Trent Reznor's personal experiences, but it's still a clear story about a character. Antichrist Superstar doesn't feel like a story about a character. It just feels like Marilyn Manson himself screaming about his own life, which doesn't paint him in a flattering light. I know he was supposed to be this counter-culture icon or whatever, but it just feels gross to listen to this because it gives off the energy of a whining incel. Also, he says the n-word in the first song. Why the fuck did he think that was a good idea? Is he stupid? I get why this album's on here. The album and band do have the cultural significance to back its inclusion. However, it still sucks and I never want to listen to this creep's "music" ever again. 1/5.
I'm on the fence. It's a very good industrial metal album. But then again, it's industrial. That's not as bad as saying "This is the best polka album ever made", but it's a knock. The genre doesn't lend itself to making truly classic albums. There's a lot of quality here, and I briefly considered 4 stars, but... it's industrial. (I try to judge albums based on their quality and historical context, not just whether *I* liked it, but I stand by my comment that "industrial" is a knock on the album.) 3 stars.
First two tracks had me thinking I was going to love the whole album
Despite this being the pinnacle of cringey, crass, white boy trash that’s rivaled only by limp bizkit and kid rock, I honestly had high hopes for this album. Beautiful people is a nostalgia track for me and the album starts off well with great production in spite of the asinine lyrics but it very quickly devolves into the worst of the nu metal stereotypes and just becomes a chore to listen to. Really doesn’t help that it’s almost 80 minutes long.
I don't like Marilyn Manson. A singer that was so much up his own ass with half-baked Nietzsche interpretations helming a rock band that was so obsessed with shocking and style that their music really was only mediocre. This album is the only one listenable. Still, it's not really interesting musically or lyrically. For a big concept album approach they had in mind it would've been better to change things up a bit.

I have never listened to Marilyn Manson before. I always thought it was just the next step after Alice Cooper, without humor. Very negative. Very fatalistic. Very hopeless. Not a style of music I’m all that interested in. And yet…I didn’t hate it. Can’t say I enjoyed it but at least I have heard it, so I can say it was crap based on hearing it not hearing about it.

Ironic that our 777th album is from the devil himself! I did not think we would get any Manson albums (maybe we did?) but this is one of the defining albums. I was never a huge Manson fan, and when you read the wiki on this above, you'll see why towards the bottom. All of those lies that were spread about him I believed and was sort of terrified of the band. That was until I heard "This is the New Shit" on a later album. The irony is that it sounds like Manson actually did some bad things unrelated to Satanism. Either way, Beautiful People was a good one, the rest didn't really register. Marilyn is an acquired taste, and even as I buzz through this album again to see if I just wasn't paying attention, I just don't connect as much to this work as say, Slipknot. When I look at the differences there, I think Manson had a shock factor gimmick, both in appearance and music. The songs are grotesque, auditorily and lyrically. Slipknot had some of that, but not to this degree. I listen to Slipknot to get pumped up, I don't get that feeling from Manson. I guess another way to put it: a Manson music video would be a grainy one of some guy who is analyzing all the tools in his workshop before choosing one and the camera pans and we find out that this is a serial killer toying with his victim. Slipknot would be a grainy video of someone looking at all their tools and then just grabbing a sledge hammer and smashing it into a wall. Similar in design, different in execution. I went to a Slipknot concert some years ago and Manson was the act before and they were very different then too. Manson was walking around on stilts while a cross or a bible was burning for all to see. Very shock and awe. The only thing like that for Slipknot was the drum set getting lifted into the air. Slipknot may have creepy masks, but Manson doesn't need a mask to be creepy.
It's the big freak himself. Marilyn Manson was never my bag, even before he was accused of all the awful stuff. Most of his music always struck me as shock value for shock's sake, like if you were a parent offended by his existence, you just fell for his bait. There's probably a song or two out there I'd remember, but none I recognized on here. A few tracks I liked, not necessarily something I'd seek out though. A pretty long album too, but conceptually it's pretty well tied together, I did like the little robotic AI voices that would appear sometimes in the ether. Decent album, though not really for me. Favorite tracks: The Beautiful People, Wormboy, Man That You Fear (yeah you wish). Album art: Creepy half-face on the right, some mathematical stuff going on everywhere else. It's a weird cover, not in a very memorable way though. Aside from his corpse-ified headshot, it's pretty tame. 3/5

Schlocky horror. Not a lot beyond the surface. It’s just glam rock, really. Totally ruined by the recent revelations about him as a person. Can’t enjoy this at all now, not that it was particularly worth a listen.
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I like a lot of industrial music and have a soft spot for Ministry, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy and so on. Not a huge Nine Inch Nails fan -- it's not bad, but I prefer aggressive to depressing. My feeling when this came out was that all the controversy was off-putting and made me think that the music was likely not very good. I never really listened to it, and never had any of the records. Well, mea culpa. There's clearly a lot of thought going on behind the scenes, and had I given this band a listen years ago, it probably would have fit right into the things I was listening to then.

Music for an alienated middle schooler's bedroom or a midwestern kind of racist strip club. Heavy and aggressive metal with enough industrial Trent Reznor influence that the slow sludgy riffs and intensely distorted guitar sounds have a distinctive groove to them. The higher pitch reverby guitar stuff - short phrases or tones repeated as a riff is intensifying - work well to build up an atmosphere and add space to the hyper-compressed mix. The singing is a nasty snarling growl screech that perfectly serves the shock-the-suburban-christians aim of the album, and boy did it. Hook line and sinker. I haven't really heard this since the 90s and in retrospect see how influencial it was on a lot of the screamo punk/metal/grindcore stuff like pg 99. Seems like them and Korn had a couple years head start on the rest more boring Nu Metal they ended up getting lumped in with and sharing a lot of bills with, but that let them establish themselves as a distinct thing. They were the band of choice for my middle school goth friends but even though I liked the songs and videos they were never really my thing. A 2-disc best of Nu Metal compilation could be a 3-4* album, but this is another victim of the late 90s 'CDs are 80 minutes and need to be full' approach to albums. One big hit, a few solid tracks, and probably 40 minutes of filler.

Angry industrial metal I don’t think it’s a poor album, but I personally didn’t get much enjoyment out of it. Between 2 and 3 I can appreciate the idea of industrial metal; I do like plenty of heavy music. But something about the angry edgy delivery turns me off somewhat. I did like some moments and thought it was overall interesting. Some good instrumental performances. Could relisten someday with fresh ears “Man that you fear” was one of my favorite tracks
Some good heavy metal riffs, but the dark edgelord schtick appeals to a more teenage-angsty audience than me.
I can like some angry music, but this very much feels angry for the sake of being angry. I liked the beginning, but it felt grating by the end.

EWWWWW: this shit just stunk. It was full of random ass noises and screaming and not a pleasant listen to the ears. I just didn't like it at all and I think everyone can pretty much agree with me on that. Unimaginative or arguably too imaginative to be good. Bad.
Marilyn Manson is an important figure in the music industry. He brought the hardcore, horrorcore metal into the mainstream. This album is a great example of this. At first I thought it would be just generic metal, but then I've heard some more ambitious rhythms. Overall I think the album got great impact on the next artists of horrorcore, not only metal. 3.5/5.

Another one of these albums that seriously make you question what this list is about. My life would be a whole lot better if I hadn't listened to this album, it's terrible. Another one of those albums that should have a zero score but that's not possible
Considered as a three-disc epic, Antichrist Superstar has a vicious start, boring middle, and an adventurous, ultimately flailing conclusion. Sadly, the bloat is the longest bit. Trying hard often works for industrial music; Doesn't imply minutes of tape, necessarily.

Two chords, the same level of distortion and yelling into the microphone. People may still talk about his appearance and his publicity stunts (along with his felonies), but his "music" had zero staying power. This guy managed to be an even bigger loser than the losers who thought listening to him made them scary and edgy.

The enemy is my enemy is my friend?? While I prefer some love and light as weapons to combat the hypocritical, fascist Christian right, I get where he is coming from. I didn't expect to like this and I don't know why he was canceled so I am not considering that in my rating. Dug the music, too.

american conservatives have a long history of making popular musicians scapegoats for society’s moral “failures”. in the 70’s, alice cooper was a main target. in the 80’s, it was ozzy osbourne. and in the mid-late 90’s, their subject of ire was marilyn manson. taking a page from the alice cooper playbook, marilyn manson was the name of the lead singer as well as the name of the band, with each band member drawing their first names from popular female pop culture figures and their last names from notorious serial killers. it was an act of social commentary based on the yin-yang theory… both good and evil exist in all humans as well as the idea that we are all just products of a fucked up society. while the band had existed for a few years prior, in 1996 they released the album Antichrist Superstar. you can’t tell the story of the 1990’s pop culture/political landscape without talking about this album. the fact that an album with this title was in the mainstream was just too much for many prominent conservatives, but as we all know one thing about anything in the entertainment industry… controversy sells. in fact, the relationship with conservatives and manson was mutually beneficial: politicians and political pundits were thrust in the limelight as was manson. hell, one of manson’s more prominent critics, senator joseph lieberman rode the wave of notoriety and almost became vice president in 2000. if you hadn’t heard of him before 1996, you had definitely heard of him after this album came out. he was interviewed by multiple people over the ensuing decade. this album is pretty intense. two pretty obvious influences you can hear are david bowie and nine inch nails. tis a concept album influenced by german philosopher friedrich nietzche as well as a critique of the fascistic tendencies of the religious right. it is a fascinating listen, not just in a “time capsule” sense, but as a look into a brilliant, albeit troubled, mind. highlights: “the beautiful people”, “tourniquet”, “mister superstar”, “the reflecting god”.
I never really Marilyn Manson, but I found this pretty good. It was a little bit too screamy for me, but good social commentary and "in-your-face-ness" with some really talented musicians.
Never got into this kind of music, thank goodness. Pretty awful, to be honest.

One hopes all the Goth (or whatever) kids who thought they needed this got therapy instead or outgrew this shitshow. Rocks more directly and here and there almost tunefully especailly in comparison to NIN. Still, it's nearly as execrable overall. MM certainly belongs in the second-tier of alleged devil worshipers in pop and rock – and in just a few decades seems every bit as pedestrian as Ozzy and Alice Cooper. Didn't he realize that the extreme positioning was going to make his farewell and reunion tours even more embarrassing? One suspects it wasn't a sufficient number of middle fingers that he lacked but rather sufficient talent. As for the opera concept or narrative, who cares?

I think we should be able to distinguish between art and artist, but, unlike Hitler, whose art I appreciate, I hate this music deeply. Simply ungraceful voice with bland instrumentals, overall a bad experience. He's just a criminal that makes poor music
I try to listen to each album at least twice in order to give it a fair shot, but can be a struggle at times. This album was one of those "at times." You can hear Trent Reznor's influence on a few of these songs, except this isn't Nine Inch Nails. There is intended to be a theme that runs through this album, which would mean these songs aren't just a desperate grab for attention through shocking a person's parents. See, this is high-art shock music. Marilyn Manson rejects all things contemporary society stands for and desperately needs your attention so he can tell you this. To think this could all have been avoided if his dad told him "good job" more often when he was a child.

Sigh. Right then best get this over with. Look I like metal, and I like NIN and Reznor's later production work, but I've always found Manson a bit much, too try-hard. Also he's rapey. And the Beautiful People was just a metal Adam Ant cover. It's decent though still, despite hearing it in clubs hundreds of times in my youth. I have to hand that to them. The 77 minute running time was another reason I was dreading this coming up. At least it's happening on a work day. 4 tracks in and if I'm honest there's not been a bad song, there's something to like in all of them - but I also don't really want to him wail on. I understand it's supposed to be a rock opera and a riff on The Wall (which I thought was mostly a bit poo) and that's all well and good but I'm not really that interested. It's just the posturing I guess, massively off-putting. I tuned in and out of course, I could swear he was screaming "you're a dirty dirty rascal" at one point (it turns out it was rock star, I prefer my version) Overall it was more enjoyable than I expected but I won't be back, so it's a 3.
The production is so good but the edgy bullshit is so performative and fake. All shock value disguising otherwise pretty basic takes on societal issues.
I’m not gonna judge him for his morals because that is not what this is about and a lot of the artists on here would be off. I was looking forward to this but it turns out ‘Beautiful People’ is the only standout track. And his music is better with the visuals

First off, let me begin this review by saying fuck Marilyn Manson. He is a terrible person who traumatized many with his actions, and I wish I had a way of listening to this without backing him financially in any way. I have the utmost love and respect for those who dealt with his abuse for so long, and I'm glad they are doing better now. I will try my best to separate the art from the artist with this album. But that can be hard to do. I consider myself someone who is more comfortable and desensitized to music like this than the average person. But I won't lie, this even had me thrown off at the beginning. There was a point where I didn't know if I would be able to finish listening to it. From the first song, the album grabs a hold of your neck, and squeezes as hard as it can, and doesn't let go for a moment. It suffocates you with some of the most crushing guitar tones I've ever heard. It was like metal and shoegaze were merged. It honestly made me uncomfortable and tense, and made me feel like my head was spinning. It doesn't help that Manson is letting out these blood-curdling screams on nearly every song. I think I like when he does that better than when he actually tries to sing, because he doesn't have the best singing voice. Trent Reznor did a lot of work for this album, and you can feel it. That magic he leaves behind is all over this record, but I don't think anything he has ever done for Nine Inch Nails was as overpowering and heavy as this is. The album is divided into three different "cycles". I'm not really sure what the concept for the album is, but of the three, the third cycle Disintegrator Rising is easily the best. It turns everything up to the max, and has the best songs on the album. It honestly bumps the whole record up quite a bit because of how good it is. This album probably isn't for the faint of heart. And I don't mean that in a pretentious way. I just don't think the average person is going to be able to get into this. It was somewhat difficult even for me. To be honest, Marilyn scares the shit out of me. Rating: 7/10

The only thing I knew about Marilyn Manson going into this album was that I never want to be alone in a room with the guy. Honestly, I dug a good bit of the music side of things, but I honestly can’t stand MM’s vocal performance on basically any song. I had to stop and start the album multiple times because of it.

I mean. I expected better? Much of the music seemed to be made to be shocking and evocative. Artistically this is great and perhaps necessary. Personally it’s a bit thin. Enjoyable? No.
The singles are good, MM can write music. But the rest of the album is miserably self indulgent.
I enjoyed everything that wasn’t Marilyn Manson. Problem is that this is a Marilyn Manson album, so there is a lot of Marilyn Manson on it. The only standout is The Beautiful People, which ironically enough is a song I really like despite not really liking everything else.

Ik heb door de jaren heen deze shockrocker meermaals live gezien op Pukkelpop/Graspop/Werchter, en hoewel ik dat altijd wel geweldig entertainende bedoeningen vond, ben ik niet verder dan zijn singles geraakt. Na zo'n show bleven de visuele ervaring me meer bij dan de songs zelf. Na het beluisteren van deze plaat denk ik dat hij thuishoort in het rijtje van Nine Inch Nails, Godflesh, Ministry, Swans of zelfs pakweg de Evil Superstars, zij het een veel commercieel toegankelijkere versie ervan. Noisy industrial is niks wat ik vaak opzet maar ik kan er wel op tijd en stond mijn ei in kwijt. De persoon achter de muziek kan me intussen wel gestolen worden, maar waarschijnlijk moet je wel een hatelijke fucked up weirdo zijn om dit soort muziek goed te kunnen maken. Zie maar naar Gira van Swans... De muziek staat er wel, en deze groovet over de hele plaat heen. Soms neigt de muziek meer naar een stuwende Rammstein/Ministry-riff (de hits!, het nummer 1996) , dan later lijkt er wel een altrockweirdnessnummer van Evil Superstars/Millionaire in te zitten als Wormboy of Kinderfeld. Tim Vanhamel of Mauro Pawlowski mogen deze wel eens coveren, ik leg nen euro bij. Mister Superstar had QotSA dan weer eens mogen onder handen nemen, toen Nick Olivieri nog aan boord was. Elk nummer heeft wel een memorabele baslijn. Had Minute Of Decay een nummer van Kapitan Korsakov geweest, hadden we dit allemaal vet gevonden. Er zijn zoveel muzikale raakvlakken met dingen die ik wel tot de goede smaak meereken, dat ik op basis van dit album alleen Marilyn Manson toch iets meer muzikale credit ga geven in de toekomst. Als je elk element hier ontleedt, vind je zeker wel een andere artiest die dat element beter brengt, maar Marilyn Manson heeft er wel een smakelijke cocktail mee weten te brouwen. Als de cocktail niet door een kutpersoon was gebrouwen, had wellicht de nasmaak minder slecht of fout geweest. 1 van de betere verrassingen tot nu toe in deze lijst. Een 4? Jot!

It was crap then and it’s still crap. He’s at his best when he’s ripping off NIN, which doesn’t happen as often as you’d think. At one point I thought the album had ended and started over, but it’s just that most of the songs sound the same and there was still over 20 minutes left! No thanks.

Very dark, heavy, unique album with godly production, I enjoyed every minute of it.
It's a good experiment that mixes the nu-metal stuff more excitingly than the others from the same period. Still, it's so repetitive (thematically and musically) that it becomes annoying in the half of the album.

Whoever decent point this album is making is completely obscured by this juvenile shtick which leans too heavily into shock for its own sake. The music itself is industrial metal primarily and is not half bad. The fact that Marilyn Manson is a sexual predator also takes away from any enjoyability this album might have had.

I remember drinking at a bar in Ft. Lauderdale with one of the guys that Marilyn Manson had fired from the band back in the 1990s. I also remember a NYE show in Ft Lauderdale as well. I haven't listened to this stuff in years, but I was surprised at how much of it I remember from my early-20s. In listening to these albums, I try to put myself in the mindset of where or what I would think of the album with no knowledge of the artist or the years since the album was released. So, I'll grade this album on that scale as a 4/5...like a 89.

This is really something that some people LOVE. The goth rock from this isn't really my cup of blood, though. In fact, i'd rather not be near a cup of blood.
Certainly succeeds with its dark vibe, angry, moody, and aggressive. Though nothing is as catchy as Beautiful People, there are plenty of songs that have a cathartic anger (e.g. The Reflecting God, Tourniquet) that align well here. I can appreciate the style.

Probably the worst part of Marilyn Manson's music is Marilyn Manson's involvement. Seriously though some of the music on this album was actually pretty cool and unique with some ambient guitar in Beautiful People and tasteful fuzz tones that don't get unnecessarily heavy. Manson has an image though of some kind of creature out a horror movie and he conveys through his vocals which is ruins each song. I will say that the tone and vibe of this album is consistent and so if this is a the kind of music that you enjoy then this is a well planned out track list for its target audience. Favorite track: Irresponsible hate album Least Favorite Track: Honestly none of them are so bad that they stand out, but as a whole I don't really like the album lol

90's goth, but now from the perspective of 2023. Oh, the 90s. The decade that gave us so much for music also gave us Marilyn Manson. This album may as well be a NIN album, though - Its very clearly a Trent Reznor production, you can hear his footprint all over this. Theres some level of rear view perspective to be applied to the album's criticism of the hypocritical nature of the American religious community, and it turns out that MM was completely correct in their message - The fascist "christian" scumbags of america have done their level best to fuck everyone over in the name of their racist ideology. Anyway, its a decent album. Couple of good tracks, and the theme is solid. 3/5

HL: “The Beautiful People”, "Man that You Fear", "Tourniquet" Funny that for the last two albums, I used the descriptive word "spooky" before getting Marilyn fucking Manson. Let me be clear: I can appreciate elements of dread, foreboding, supernatural creatures, etc. in my music, movies & other art. One example is NiN's The Downward Spiral, which is a kind of psychological horror. What I don't like is in-your-face blood & guts horror, which this album does much better than it does the former. I guess dread and nausea kinda feel the same. Though it's a major part of the package, if I remove the controversy, the Shock Rock of it all, I'm left with some interesting passages & songs ("Cryptorchid" is neat I guess), and a LOT of mediocre 90s nu metal. I heard the whole thing in one sitting at least, which I couldn't quite do with albums like Slipknot (1999) and Roots (1996). While I can’t pretend to love much of this, at least the concept of writing a concept album from a villainous perspective (as opposed to disturbed, like the aforementioned T.D.S.) sparks my interest.

Reading the background on this album, I'm reminded what a controversial figure Marilyn Manson was back in the 90s. Like seriously, he had religious groups picketing his shows. Everyone had something to say about this band. And although I always felt Manson's shtick was a pastiche of elements he lifted from much better artists and cranked to 11, none of it would have mattered if the music wasn't good. As albums go, both for its genre and the time in which it was made, it turns out this album is pretty solid. The structure, the musicianship, the packaging, it's all really cohesive and well done. Reading how hellish the recording sessions were, it's surprising the band was able to pull it off. That said, it's really not for everyone. This album has some raw, visceral energy that's pretty impressive. The band has a pretty harrowing industrial sound, with a creepy and unsettling vibe. The concept of the album is ambitious, something rare for the 90s. But the concept is not readily apparent if you're listening without any awareness of what the album is supposed to be about. Occasionally the imagery of the lyrics is striking, but maybe more often, the lyrics end up sounding clunky and nonsensical. Edgy for edginess' sake. Regardless, I've never been a big fan of Marilyn Manson and always thought he was just being performatively shocking to scare the "normies". Under normal circumstances this would probably warrant two stars, but I'll subtract one for the sex crimes
Hard to separate how I feel about this album now with how I felt about it in high school (loved it, played it all the time). Almost every song is peak edge-lord energy, but it's all still delivered in a polished and powerful recording, and Manson excels at delivering over the top cheesy melodies and themes with really good composition that comes off as legitimately spooky. Most of this playthrough was waxing nostalgia, but because of that I enjoyed it and will almost certainly listen again in the distant future.

There have been more than a couple of artists featured in this series that I am not a fan of, but my distaste is largely subjective. But if I can be absolutely objective- what is Marilyn Manson still doing here? I can’t pretend that I don’t feel some fondness for his work. Like many edgelord youths who came of age during the mid 90s-late 00s, I had a bit of a Manson phase. But even ignoring his disgusting behavior towards his partners, what does his music add to the music industry that you couldn’t get from other contemporary industrial acts like Fear Factory or even his mentor, Trent Reznor? Because while “The Beautiful People” may still slap, there’s a lot of filler here. That’s largely because this is an album from the peak CD era, where more was more and filling a disc to its limit was the name of the game. But I just don’t see this as essential. Also, guy’s a creep and always has been. D… maybe a plus for nostalgia’s sake

Another album that I regret not listening to at the time because I was brainwashed by the NME and probably listening to Dodgy instead. "Antichrist Superstar" probably doesn't pack the punch it did in '96, and it comes across a bit silly and cartoony now, but there are still some decent tunes on here and the production is incredible.

Looking into the Wikipedia **Political reaction** section, I guess its interesting that this is probably the millennial equivalent of like Kiss or something, where most of the appeal was probably very tied up in kids wanting to piss off their parents. In that sense, that Onion "Going Door to Door to Shock People" headline probably did *way* more to knock MM down a peg than any amount of congressional hearings

To be honest, Marilyn Manson is the only person I know who mastered the art or "being edgy". Trent Reznor's brand of industrial metal is already dark, Manson took it and brought it to a deeper layer of hell. Using the word "anti-christ" during such a time is already quite a statement. He explored satanic themes and it came out genuinely disgusting instead of fad-ish. He scared a good bunch of kids and adults. Especially those people who wince at the mention of Satan, those people who cringe at anything associated with youth's culture, and of course the iconic ones who would actually blame music instead of gun control and mental health support for youth suicides and school shootings. I mean, I'm not defending this guy's actions, whatever they are. He may or may not be a bad person, but his music is absolutely filthy... and I love it.
I would say that I have have always really appreciated the song "Beautiful People" since it came out. Turns out the rest of the album is just getting yelled at by someone who wants to shock me for an hour and a quarter more. Nope.

This went on for a very long time. And then it went on for another 45 minutes. So. Long. I hadn't thought about Marilyn Manson in a very long time. Do people still make music like this? Are people still shockable? Is Marilyn Manson still mad at his mom? I did appreciate the lyric, "I wasn't born with enough middle fingers." I have felt that emotion.
I love the song The Beautiful People so I was not averse to listening to this. As expected, it is an all-out assault on the senses. It’s a disturbing, angry epic that I can’t say was a pleasant listen, but I didn’t hate the experience. I don’t seem to be able muster up as much anger any more as I probably need to properly relate to this, but it is quite an accomplishment nonetheless. Listening to this is like a haunted house. I wouldn’t want to live there, but it’s cool to visit.

What *was* the deal with albums around this time trying to jam every song they had written onto a single CD? Nothing wrong with a tight 30 minute album. That being said, once you've heard about five songs, you get the gist: mechanical, pulsing drums, distorted compressed guitars, and Marilyn Manson either doing a strange dark/sexy/weird low guttural tone or shrieking until his voice gives out. Trent Reznor's fingerprints are all over this, and sometimes (most times, honestly), it's to the detriment of the record, making MM sound like someone merely imitating than someone who had a long history with Reznor. The man and his horrific proclivities aside, this record is just bloated and one note. Favorite track: "The Beautiful People"

I was waffling between 1 and 2 stars for this album, but even trying to separate the artist from the art, I don't think this album is anything special. the songs are repetitive and overstay their welcome, as they're all just different tweaks of the same shock rock and (proto-)nu-metal-esque filler tracks. Listening objectively… it’s a decent album to listen to, musically speaking. It does feel like they are trying really really hard to be shocking and controversial, so much so that it comes off a bit silly. I guess if the listener is 15 yo it presents differently. The production is good, most of the music is decent, but I don’t need to hear it again. Others did it first and better anyway.

This is the only Manson album I ever owned and always loved it. If the whole album burned like the first two songs, this album would be epic. But it would need to be at least a half hour shorter. The album descends into a typical mid 90's sound for most of it's duration. There are a bunch of good tracks, but I don't think the whole album is really worth listening to.

I mean when your idea of fun is inviting Andy Dick to your house and showing him your homemade snuff film under the guise of it being real to scare him, I can definitely get behind that. That's funny. But when your idea of fun turns into raping and torturing women, well then that becomes a problem doesn't it. For the MM character to work the man behind it HAD to be a good person. To absolutely drive the point home. But it didn't work out that way. As for the album, yeah it's just Trents magic mixed with the complete douchebag vocals and lyrics of from the king of house harkonnen himself. It's good and it works. I'd maybe possibly even give this a 4/5 but I'm not letting it go into my liked albums list. Definitely an album a lot of people will grow out of. It's the downward spiral but shittier. Score: 70. Superstar, superfuck baby! I'm crediting anything that sounds cool on this album to Trent. This was a NIN album with a worse front man. No problem with the shocking and dark tone, but the lyrical prowess here made me cringe all the way through. I was literally laughing out loud in parts at the absurdity, and bewildered at the use of racial slurs in the first song. We now know how much this man sucks, but fuck these conservative groups blaming him for Columbine and leading congressional hearings to ban all explicit music because it's scarring the kids.
I enjoyed some of this but at a distance. I listened to a lot of it on headphones and I kept lowering the volume because it was hurting my ears, but then the lower volume just didn't feel right. It's abrasive music and I didn't enjoy it enough to go back for a repeat listen. But I see the appeal of Marilyn Manson. A lot of songs actually have pretty straightforward pop structures, just dressed up as hardcore punk and metal and industrial. There's a core of solid songwriting in the music. He can also really go full-out hardcore too. This is a huge album and I appreciate that he breaks it up into three segments. Still, I found myself slogging through the end. "Mister Superstar" stood out to me as an interesting one. It's a twisted satire about celebrity and fandom. The lyrics about doing anything for Mister Superstar also felt significant given Marilyn Manson's allegations of sexual abuse and power dynamics.
Shock Rockers existed before Marilyn Manson (Alice Cooper always comes to mind) but no one did it like him. I really loved this album as a teenager (a few years after it came out) and he was such a great mix of visual performer, music performer, messaging, and heavy songwriting. He also has had so many controversial incidents of being abusive towards his partners but there's been so much back and forth's about who did what and who is actually guilty (apparently he has successfully sued for defamation) that I gave up following it and my opinion has kind of semi-permanently been in this "i don't know who is guilty anymore so I'll just choose to think that everyone is wrong" mode. It's a shame because he had a great platform and he had done a lot of things for people who didn't always have a voice in the world. He also got a lot of fingers pointed his way when Columbine happened and he really eloquently spoke a some talk show (Phil Donahue? edit: He's been on a bunch now that I searched for it) about how people needed to look at places like the american media, the NRA, and most importantly the mental health of the killers themselves- all topics that are salient to the task of better understanding the gun issue today. He also had this interaction where he was asked what he would say to the kids at Columbine and he responded "I wouldn't say anything to them, I would listen to them and that's what no one did". I think a conclusion that a lot of people come towards in this country about gun control results in the idea that it's way too easy to look at people with mental health problems and sweep them under the rug, and then specifically not make it hard for them to purchase guns. And this is something that he was speculating on decades ago. Alright back to the album. Like all human beings I tend to like music that has hooks. That's the point of pop music, to be as filled with hooks as a fishing boat, because psychologically that's the addictive dopamine hit that makes humans want to listen more / buy the product. In my experience in listening and writing heavier rock music, I've found that it's really hard to write hooks in heavy metal because the genre typically is devoid of the building blocks that GENERALLY are needed. Simple lyric phrases (think 90% of Beatles choruses) and simple, repetitive melodies (think 90% of Beatles choruses). Rock bands do this, like I think of ACDC, Ozzy Osbourne, The Rolling Stones, Guns n Roses, etc. But not really metal bands. So when a heavy metal act has hooks I'm usually instantly impressed, and Marilyn Manson is SO good at writing hooks. Even now, some 15-20 years after really listening to him, I can still look at the tracks on this album (and other albums) and recall how the choruses go. This album is a 4/5 for me. I would think his greatest hits would be like a 4.8/5 and this one only has a few of his true hits, like "Antichrist Superstar", "Tourniquet", and "The Beautiful People".
This album makes me feel gross. I was not excited to see this album come up as today's recommendation. I've heard several tracks from Manson, including at least one from this album. I'm not Manson's target audience, and I could not recommend this album to anyone. I couldn't finish most of the tracks, and part way through I stopped listening to the album. I'm sad that I have wasted time thinking about Manson.

When this album first hit I was a young teen and it annoyed me that this garbage was taking "real" metal's place. It annoyed me that Manson's shtick pissed so many conservatives in the US off - didn't they know he was just an attention whore acting up to get a reaction? Oh GOD they gave this guy a lot of oxygen. It sent his stupid ego into the stratosphere and his stupid ugly face was everywhere for a while. About 10 years ago I gave him a re-listen. The 90s industrial/nu metal thing was long dead and it seemed like a good time to go back with fresh ears and be fair to it. I'd found out that I really liked a few of those other bands after writing them off in the 90s. But Manson still sucked. His songs weren't actually any good, he felt like all style no substance. Today I'm giving it yet another chance. I'm almost 40 now and it just sounds like the worst of 90s rock - middling, drawn out b-grade stuff that wishes it was Alice Cooper and NIN. And it doesn't hold up to a bunch of similar bands that put just a little more effort into the songwriting: KMFDM, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Static-X... even fucking ICP. And it's way too long. 2/5.

This was my soundtrack to my teenage angst so it's hard for me to rate it objectively. It's kind of funny to think how disturbing this album was when it came out, people were shocked by Manson and the little me was heavily drawn to its themes of anti-capitalism, anti-religion, anti-herd mentaly, anti-everything. I think it still holds up fairly well musically speaking, its production is still intriguing, thanks to Trent Reznor, and its spooky vibe is still intact. It is way too long though, this wouls have been a much stronger record if they had cut a good 3-4 songs in the middle of the album. I will rate it high because I can't deny how important that album was to me, even though I still think Mechanical Animals is his best.

Some interesting bits, but too long for what it actually is. Knowing the character and his influence on music and culture in particular American, I understand that he is found in this book.
I think it's the kind of album that was really great and innovative when it came out, but that is now unfortunately uninteresting and outdated. A few great songs here and there, but I can't find any fun or emotions listening to that. A fair 3.
It’s been a long while since I’ve listened to any Marilyn Manson. I was never his biggest fan, but his cover of Tainted Love definitely got a lot of playtime in my teens. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to an album of his in full, so let’s change that today! Songs I already knew: The Beautiful People Favourites: The Beautiful People, Tourniquet I honestly surprised myself at how much I enjoyed this. I love the synth bass that it often used in his tracks here, and the creepy shock rock is always a fun style in general. I really enjoyed Tourniquet, although I do think he pronounces that word weird (the T is silent, right? It’s pronounced tour-ni-kay. Please tell me I haven’t made that up). There is a strange use of the n-word in the opening track, which I found a very odd choice of lyrics and I’d be surprised if he still performs that live. Overall, I surprisingly enjoyable album with great distortion, weird singing and genuinely fun.
The Beautiful People still sounds great and the title track too, to a lesser degree. The rest wears a quite thin. This album does, however, distill a moment in time, an inflection point, so perhaps belongs on the list. Marilyn Manson is conflated in my head with Columbine, The Matrix, Y2K, and the general feeling of dystopia being on the edge of breaking through. Followed by 9/11 and the start of the forever wars. Of course that was before 2016 and 2020 well and truly kicked us all in the head.
This is really good, absolutely blasting opening 4-5 tracks, the next chunk are decent, loses its way a little but then fires right back from the title track on apart from that weird hidden track bollocks loads of people did in the 90s. Think the dip in the middle stops it getting a 5 but even though I listened to this a bit around 2000, I didn't remember it well, and it's a lot better than I remembered.
Don't get the love for this at all, feels like an angry teenager screaming whatever he thinks will get the biggest reaction. If he'd been born 10 years later Alex Jones-style shock jockey, or 30 years later he'd be a Twitter troll. On the plus side, there's a fair bit of variety, in the most part I can actually hear the lyrics (although more often than not I wish I couldn't). Does get better in the second half too (after o not great start and an atrocious middle). 2/5.
Nine Inch Nails if Trent Reznor was both a terrible person and a musician of negligible talent. The backing band is competent, but the lyrical content is so disgusting and upsetting that any vestigial enjoyment is obliterated.
I didn't care much for this, and thank goodness, because he is not a very swell fellow.
Thank God I didn't like this as much as I expected. Aside from Marilyn Manson being a shitbag, I found that a lot of the album was really bad shock and not substantial. A few things I did like, but too many slurs, high pitched-drones, and bloated songs to be very good in my mind.

As another review said “ What a weird, touchy, rapey, gothy creep.” I think this should be taken off the list. I listened to a few seconds of the songs but that’s it I do not want to support this person. I skipped this album. I read some of the lyrics to one of the songs- they were so fucked up. Anyone who likes this music (and knows what the lyrics are saying) have something thing with them. No healthy happy person spreads hate.

Beautiful people is the best track
The Beautiful People is far and away the best song on here.
I've listened to this record in the hundreds of times. I was a massive MM fan in the 90s. But at 42, I still listen to NIN but I've left MM behind. I think I grew out of it. And Manson's rape issues make this a little different to listen to now. I'm still rating this high. It changed goth in the 90s and it led all us kids looking for something heavier than Nirvana into the open arms of metal. The other thing to mention about this record is it's narrative arc. Not a lot of concept records really work. They don't take you on the journey the artist is trying to sell. And it gets annoying when artists try and force a concept when there isn't on there (looking at you Corgan). But this is an actual, honest to god (pun intended) concept album. Telling a story through music and lyrics with a begining, middle, and end.

Thought this album had a really strong start an whilst there's no songs I dislike, it doesn't maintain the initial highs. The opener is a banger and I proper like 'Tourniquet' and I have massive nostalgia for 'The Beautiful People' from watching WWF Raw back in the day. HolyWood remains my favourite Manson album

All the songs kinda blend together. This is not a genre of music I listen to usually, so it was a bit of a chore to listen through this. Its also very long. Its probably not a bad album, but not my cup of tea Favorite song is Beautiful People and the untitled final track is kinda weird and I like that 2/5

Not my type of music... but it was not too bad considering. Although when I actually listened and put the instrumentals aside, it was not great.
Already a slur only 1:50 into the album. Color me surprised…. The lyrics on here are corny as fuck. Being edgy just for the sake of being edgy. There’s no substance. Trent Reznor really saved this album. The production on here is actually really good and saves this album from being a 1.
Tryhard. Go listen to NIN, KMFDM, Nitzer Ebb and literally hundreds of other better bands

Separating the art from the artist - this album changed the 1990s for me. It is brilliant, aggressive, reflective, seductive and dangerous. Unfortunately, this turns out to be a good description of Brian Warner too. Thing is - the warning signs were there from the very start. Beautiful People is a Glitter beat, for the love of all things. Such a shame that people allowed him to carry on. The album itself is an easy 5 stars - and that's what I'll be rating it. But I couldn't listen to it again. I tried. And I just can't dissociate enough to let myself continue.

I think it's well established at this point this kind of music is not my thing. I'm not offended and I don't find it particularly controversial. I really dislike the while croak-shout school of vocal delivery. There's reportedly a story to the whole thing, but I can't make out 3 words in 20 so this lost on me. And mostly I think industrial is boring. Extra point deducted for being egregiously long.
