I thought it was a good mix of intensity with great rhythmic melodies. “Wormboy” especially reminded me of a NIN song, which I dug a lot. I was gonna give this four stars at first because of how much I just liked the general sound, but noticed that it became a little repetitive. Bands like Deftones and NIN both accomplished what this album tries to do better during the same time period. As much as I liked some of the songs here, I don’t feel comfortable enough listening to Marilyn Manson for further exploration. I tried to separate my listening experience from the 90s hype and controversy and the fact that Manson is actually a trash person and not just acting. This album is fine, some good tracks, and Manson isn't a great singer but has a unique style. In my opinion, the same songs are better when interpreted by other artists (ex. Tourniquet by Rasputina).

I am not looking forward to this. Scumbag who already makes middling music any way? I would just skip it, but if I listened to Kanye I should probably listen to this. What, the guy who made music like this is a terrible person? Color me shocked! I was actually thinking about a two star with this one, as I didn't mind some small parts of some small songs, and the production value is pretty good. It reeks of 90s, which if that's your thing, then here you go. But then it just kept going on and on, with no song really feeling that different from each other. Whoa, he screams a bit, then at the end of the song various background noises start happening that are supposed to be eerie and uncomfortable to listen to? It judt becomes mind numbing by song number 9. Issue is the album then goes on almost double that. I also soley blame this album for the people who have "no lives matter" bumper stickers on their 2003 Honda Accord, as if they think they're edgy. All of that plus Mairlyn Mandon himself makes this a pretty definitive one star. God I hate Nu Metal.

Well paced, really enjoyed it.

Weird album to come back too. Marilyn Manson both freaked me out and intrigued me in my teen years. The Beautiful People continues to be a solid driving rhythm with an interesting message. The rest of the album is weird and interesting. Might need to listen to it again to see if I can appreciate it or consider it an album from my youth that I no longer value.

Regrettably, this completely and utterly rules. It’s even a bit more tasteful (musically speaking) than I’d have imagined.

An important album for alternative music but could be about a quarter the length shorter. Makes a statement but it really did NOT need to be an hour and 11 minute statement.

Pretty much exactly as I remember the experience upon buying it on CD, when it hits it hits perfectly, when it misses its booooooooring.

Nowhere near as dark and edgy as it tries to be, it's just got tinny production and laughably try hard lyrics. The Beautiful People and The Reflecting God still slap and Tourniquet is more impactful than I remember, but the rest is just unpleasant and boring

Knew some of the hits but didn't know how great of an album it is.

Antichrist Superstar is the second album by American rock band Marilyn Manson and is certified platinum. It is a gothic rock, industrial/alternative metal, political agenda rock opera concept album about a supernatural being who takes power from humanity in order to begin an apocalyptic event. The album was critically and commercially popular, and was credited with ending the domination of grunge music on the charts. Listeners were starved for something different with their rock music and they received it with this hellish, controversial, and otherworldly album. This is the first time I have listened to a Marilyn Manson album and it was as dark as I expected it to be. However, the music and lyrics were surprisingly good. I'm not usually a fan of metal, but I did enjoy this album.

Beyond The Beautiful People, there are more hits that show Manson's vocal mastery. Felt like a 14 yo again

You know, for 90s heavy rock, nu metal, grunge, gritty music, this album ain't half bad. Is it a masterpiece? Nope. Is it sorta dumb and silly? Yep. But, someone that dresses up and scares boomers about transgender people and atheism, because they are uncomfortable with differences in others ain't bad to me. It was fun to listen to. It’s way better than Korn. And, for commercial music, it actually says “fuck you” loudly. MM is more than likely a monster predator, so that’s bad. Yet, here I am agreeing with some of his easy, entry-level, punk lefty ethos. Good on ya metal Manson. Have a good day.

I try and approach every album with an open mind and let the music speak for itself and avoid the misgivings of the artist in rating the music. Nope. This was torture and an absolute struggle. Like the other 1 star albums I have on this list, it has all the things I dislike: bad vocals, metal, stupid fucking lyrics, way too long, being from the 90s. It doesn't surprise me I hated this album since Trent Reznor is on it and I really do not care for NIN. Plus the whole thing with these artists in trying to be shocking or deep or some shit like that. Seriously it's so lame. Named after serial killers? I'm offended at how pathetic that is. It's very edgelord.

Not a whole lot of variation, just industrial gloom all the way through. It would be fine if this was a 30-40 minute album, but it’s way too long, and there’s a lot of filler here. Honestly needed a break halfway through.

This style is definitely "heavier" than my usual listening fare, but that's my personal preference. No doubt this is a talented band and front person. Interesting work on this album.

Brian Warner is by all accounts a pretty shitty human being. Difficult to separate the "artist" from the "art", when his stage persona and narrator are equally pretty shitty. The album is also pretty shitty.

Angry dark album. Supposed to mark the end of the fun and all too brief grunge era. Recording marred by excessive drug use and guitar player quoting during session. The distorted vocals add a nice edge to the dark. Great guitar playing and use of feedback as an effect. Super crunchy guitars that are very prominent in the mix. The cover art, dissonance, and horror like mood of this album would have been nightmare fuel for me as a kid.

17-year-old me would have loved this album, which is ironic because despite my Static-X, Slipknot, NIN-loving teenage self, I never got into Marilyn Manson. I think I just thought his music was too much based on a schtick and not actually music. I guess in a way that's kind of right, but also wrong. Let me explain. Antichrist Superstar is an excellent industrial metal album of the mid to late 90s. I kept hearing Trent Reznor's influence throughout, so I wasn't surprised to see that he was a producer on this. But, to me at least, what's holding this album back from greatness is the vocals. I'm not saying this in light of Brian Warner's real-life creeper-ness. The songs are dark and disturbing, and not in a good way...more so it feels like it's for shock than anything else. And it worked. His persona is what made this album wildly successful. But it's also what turns me (and many others) off to this music. If this had been a Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor vocalized album, I'd probably be raving about it and giving it 5 stars. As it stands, its a middle-of-the-road albeit highly influential and noteworthy metal album.

Glam heavy metal is still heavy metal. I can only take it in small doses.

This is an album I've listened to before. Ignoring all controversy surrounding Brian and just rating the album I would give it 4/5. The NIN influences are obvious as Trent Reznor produced several songs on the album. Some songs are great but there's a few that are just ok and keeping the score from reaching 5/5.

Pretty interesting album. Manson appears to go for the shock value with the lyricism. Instrumentally some of the songs are pretty good yet it’s hard to continue through the album just because of how weird some of it is. But some songs aren’t awful so it’s still ok. 4.2/10

Raw, loud, provocative, creepy and intense, this is album is peak Marilyn Manson.

Solid album all around. This album was the album, in my opinion, pushed MM to superstar status, no pun intended.

I had a Manson phase when this first came out. I thought it was awesome and then I started moving away from this into heavier and faster stuff when he wanted to be a glam rocker. Upon listening to it so many years later I was a bit surprised. I knew that it had a few songs that I could still enjoy but I forgot about some of the deeper cuts. This album works best when it goes harder; more specifically it works best when you can really hear the Reznor influence loud and clear. There are some songs in the middle that are okay but a bit dull. Luckily it gets better by the end. That title track is killer. How could I forget? The vocal fry and "aren't I just so tortured and InSAnE ?!" voice that Manson uses can be really grating. When he just belts his songs out he's pretty good. Overall I didn't want to like this because well, Manson is a lame edge lord d-bag. This album is damn good though. I can't deny it. One last thing I have to get outta my system: all you "cancel culture" people are a joke. I don't like him either but get off your high horses and separate art from artist. Do you do the same for Bobby Womack, John Lennon, or any of the other scuzzie people that made this list?

I'm pretty sure Trent Reznor now bitterly regrets ever having associated his name with this pathetic clown. But even before the accusations of psychological and sexual abuse, even before all those unsavory extramusical events surrounding the story of this psycho parading as an "artist", it was so obvious how poorly this music would age in a very short amount of time. Behind the shock glock shtick, behind the lame posturing and the make-up barely concealing the lack of any relevant ideas on a musical standpoint, everything in this record overblown to the extreme actually sounds... bland. To go back to Reznor, what we have here is a third-rate version of Nine Inch Nails at best (knowing the original is not necessarily for everyone anyway). Like horror films that fail to scare their viewers, and are not even fun to watch if you just want to have a good laugh with friends, it's just an embarassing moment. A waste of time. In the age of Korn and Nu-metal, I guess sone teenagers desperately trying to look edgy could fall for this ridiculous circus. I'm also pretty damn sure that 99% of those teenagers now grown to adults never return to this album. Or *any* album by Marilyn Manson--I do seem to remember a few stronger melodies on *Mechanical Animals*, so I might feel generous enough to give that one two stars if it ever pops up here. But no more than that. The only thing that seemed to redeem MM at the time was that it was the target of those Christian fundamentalist lunatics obssessed with dogma and self-repression. Those fanatics obviously can't understand art. But since MM himself doesn't understand what *good* art is, why should we bother trying to redeem him now? Especially today, with all the news... ? Just gonna start off by saying that Marilyn Manson scared the crap out of me as a kid, and to be quite honest, still kinda scares me today 😬 There is no doubt however that he is the master of heavy industrial/gothic rock/metal, and Antichrist Superstar is definitely up there. A horror filled concept outing that revolves around a supernatural being who seizes all power from humanity, driven by resentment, and despair, he uses this position to destroy the world. It can also be seen as a social critique, using this storyline as a metaphor for the perceived fascist elements of the conservative political movement and the Christian right in North America. (This is not the first album that I have listened to where themes that were relevant over 25-30 years ago are still very much in the forefront of the American people's minds.) This wasn't as bad as I was expecting. They've got a bit of the "loud-quiet-loud" shifts that the Pixies used. Tourniquet sounds like it could be an Alice Cooper song. Bring on Rob Zombie!

Not my jam

First things first... Awful human being. I suspect he'll go the same way as the Glitter Band in the next edition. But this album is actually enjoyable. The glam rock and budget edgelord NIN industrial stuff on it is very enjoyable. The more trad rock stuff is meh, and some of the lyrics are a bit yucky.

I miss when Marilyn Manson was a misunderstood goth and not a sex pest.

Wow. It's... edgy? I don't know another way to describe this album. From the first song I felt like it was just trying to be crude and weird for the sake of being crude and weird. There just didn't seem to be any point to the lyrics, at least to me. Not my cup of tea at all. But maybe it would have clicked more if I was an angsty teenager when I listened to it for the first time. I really tried to listen to the whole thing, but it just wasn't in the cards for me.

Wasn't ecstatic to see this album, but always liked Beautiful People. There were a couple of other good tracks that I liked as well...but it kept going it seemed a little like an endless slog by last 3 tracks.

My first thought was “oh, do I have to?” Then I listened and there was some good bops - but I can’t get away from what he has been accused of.

I am not a fan of this kind of music, (at least I wasn’t) so my hopes were not night for this. But I really enjoyed it. Great beats and energy and anger, and the music is much more accessible than I expected. I have listened to this a couple of times and we surely listen again.

I used to like this when I was younger, but there's a reason I grew out of it. This was very samey and too long and I just don't enjoy it anymore.

I didn't hate this as much as I was expecting to. Still didn't like it, but it was a bit more nuanced than I imagined it would be. Actually reminded me of Alice Cooper more than once, which I guess makes sense. Doesn't change the fact that Brian Warner is a major douchebag. 2 stars.

Loved this when it came out. Now I can only listen to Beautiful People and Antichrist Superstar. The thought of ever having being a fan of the lead singer makes me cringe.

Fuck Mary Manson. He looks gross (strike one), he's a rapist (strike two), and he's a rapist (strike three).

Nu Metal is not my jam, but this is slightly more listenable. Also MM is a shitty person and this feels way less edgy than it did 25 years ago

Great. This fucking asshole. Luckily I was already in a shitty mood, which is perfect for listening to this album. Two years after The Downward Spiral, Marilyn Manson comes along and does essentially the same thing, except not as good. "I wasn't born with enough middle fingers" is exactly the type of on-the-nose bullshit that makes this album feel like a cheap ripoff of any good industrial album. The album is not devoid of merit, though. The production is really good in parts. There are some good songs too, though I mostly have to ignore the lyrics, which largely seem like a teenager's impression of Trent Reznor lyrics. I honestly think I would really enjoy an instrumental version of this album. Musically it works pretty well. It somehow manages to sound both gritty and clean at the same time. The instruments are mixed really well with the vocals so that nothing feels like it is left out in the avalanche of sound that most songs build to. After reading about the making of this album on Wikipedia 1) it makes sense that I hear so much Trent Reznor here, since he produced the album and wrote multiple songs along with other members of NIN, and 2) everyone involved in the production of this album sounds like a fucking asshole. Also, this is a concept album? Could have fooled me. 2/5 I was originally going to give this 3/5 because I do really enjoy the music, but this album becomes increasingly self-indulgent and crucifying to listen to as it goes. The lyrics are universally juvenile, and the neat musical moments are not enough to overcome the chore that this album becomes as it progresses. Also fuck Marilyn Manson as a person. It takes a special kind of prick to take being a bad boyfriend to the level of criminal charges

Wanted to like this. Strong Trent Reznor vibes but just not a good album.

It took me more than 24 hours to deal with this thing. A lot of pauses. Maybe 1 song was OK.

Not sure what everyone is hating on. This record is fantastic. Giving it 3 instead of 4 just cause the stretch from "Little Horn" to "Mister Superstar" kinda sucks, but that's just a symptom of double album syndrome. It's supposed to be a rock opera, but the story isn't told as well as Tommy or American Idiot, so you have little idea what's going on unless you listen to it a million times and think about the lyrics. Other than that, there are so many amazing tracks. Starts off with a banger, "Irresponsible Hate Anthem" reminds me of hardcore Nirvana and Rage Against The Machine. Followed up by arguably his most famous song "The Beautiful People." Two tracks later is "Tourniquet" which is really melodic and dramatic, a favorite of mine, and I really like the accompanying video. His music videos are the best. As said, the next 5 songs are weak enough to reduce its score, but there are some notable ideas, like the dystopian future sounds of "Cryptorchid," like a grimier Blade Runner. Industrial sound very heavy in "Deformography," which brings up a point that this album is a gateway for youngsters to get into heavier industrial or metal music. It can be seen as a stepping stone, and that's a reason why it's not looked upon fondly, but despite all it's a remarkable blend of pop and industrial that no one else has done as well, or as accessible to a mainstream listener. There's no repetition in any of these tracks, they're all very different in style and technique, giving the audience plenty to taste and pick their favorites. Album picks up with "Angel with the Scabbard." From here on, the tracks feel less pop-oriented and more mature. The songwriting is still primitive; you could tell he's just writing whatever comes to his mind, and he's definitely looking for that shock factor. "He is the raper" wow didn't see that coming sigh. But the structure is poetic and fitting to his aggression and heavy wall of sound. If you only half pay attention to the lyrics, it's a much better experience. I love the transitions in these later songs. So smooth into "Kinderfield," which is kinda a filler but necessary breather before (again a smooth ass transition to) the highlight title track. It's the most coherent and well-polished track for sure. "1996" is a decent filler, I like the aggression but doesn't have much going for it. What cements me really enjoying the album are these last 3 tracks. The production and vocals are so perfect, which is a coherent progression to the climax, that an album consisting of tracks just like these 3 would deserve a perfect score. "The Reflecting God" is my other favorite. I'm obsessed with the sporadic buildup that stops spontaneously only to come back out of nowhere, divulging into the bittersweet closer "Man That You Fear." His best record? Probably not, his next two albums might compete for that title. His most iconic? For sure, it popularized industrial, inspiring many artists to take up the genre, and many more to become fans. I might skip the middle tracks (screw double albums), but I'll definitely be playing this album again.

As a 90s kid, Marilyn always had a connotation of being very hardcore/evil. I was kind of dreading this because metal is absolutely not my thing. I'm happy to report that this album rules. It is closer to NIN than Slipknot, in every good way. I was also a bit surprised to realize that I had heard Beautiful People before. It is a good track.

I really don't care about what the Christian right or what homeland security thinks about Marilyn Manson's "music", the bottom line is it sucks! You can pile on as much anti-Christ bullshit, vile and hateful devil crap you want, but it doesn't make it more listenable. In fact, I found it at times unlistenable, stupid and annoying. If this is so-called "shock" rock, give me Alice Cooper, at least he had a sense of humor. Don't support this sick, creepy loser!

This one was difficult to do. How do you separate the art from the artist? Knowing how terrible of a person Marilyn Manson seems to be, it was very difficult to listen to this and be like "yeah, it's pretty good, BUT..." The unadulterated rage and anger built up in this album, you can really feel it. It's directed at the right people, the hypocrisy at the world, religion, society, etc. And yet we still have the man who created it, which makes this so much more difficult to deal with. I would have liked this more from someone else. Knowing more about the musician makes the songs more difficult. Knowing more about the actors certainly makes movies difficult for me, even if they are classics. But I am still giving this 4 stars, I liked it a lot, nut I have a LOT of misgivings with it. It was well-done, well-produced. There was at least one song that sounded a LOT like Nine Inch Nails to me.

He is one strange dude, but Marilyn Manson is a great lyricist. He's pretty good at the music part of songwriting too (with help from his band). He really mastered that angry pounding guitar sound (with a little electronica help). The Beautiful People was always one of my favorite angry pump up songs. Some other highlights for me are The Reflecting God, 1996, Mister Superstar, and Angel with the Scabbed Wings. Could do with a little less screaming. Can't deny the energy they bring.

The music is intensely cool, the lyrics intensely disturbing. The album cover scared my 12 year old. Lots of clear NIN influence (or maybe literally just Trent Reznor adding NIN touches). Can't call it a 5 mainly because of the disturbing lyrics and the fact that Marilyn Manson is individually pretty disturbing. Favorite tracks: Dried Up, Tied and Dead to the World, Tourniquet, Cryptorchid (mellotron!), Deformography, Antichrist Superstar, The Reflecting God.

Brian Warner owes his entire musical credibility to Trent Reznor. The aggressive, hard-hitting industrial sound is not just an influence, no, Reznor is literally producing a good chunk of this album, including the best moments. The Beautiful People? Reznor. Tourniquet? Also Reznor. The Reflecting God? Fuckin' Nine Inch Nails, baby! You can argue that Warner has his on imprint on the album, but the gaps where Reznor isn't producing are also gaps of quality. Compared to Downward Spiral or Pretty Hate Machine, Antichrist Superstar is a cheap imitation. As ambitious as it is, though, the pacing is well-done! The concept album breaks chunks of tracks into "cycles", giving some credence to the runtime. Concept albums clocking in at over an hour long are prone to making my eyes roll, but at least execution here isn't bad. Warner touches on capitalism and satirizes fascism while inverting religious conservatism on it's head with the whole horror antichrist aesthetic. It's clever way to shock your way into the mainstream, like the Sex Pistols or Elvis Presley. For all the great bits in the album, there's a lot that ends up dragging things down. The middle "cycle" of the album is really what bores me the most. Beyond that, the Begotten aesthetic doesn't really phase or impress me. There's potential in here, but it's too cluttered, too commercial for it to be great.

Ah, Brian Warner, der Alice Cooper für die Generation Limp Bizkit. Nur, dass der echte Alice ja angeblich privat ein recht feiner Kerl sein soll während seine 90erJahre-Hollywoodversion eher der letzte Wixer. Aber nun gut - warum ist die Platte hier drin? Ganz unterhaltlich natürlich, aber nichts was man vorher nicht schon bei Ministry, Pantera oder Type-O-Negative gehört hätte; hier halt nur maximal auf MTV frisiert. Hätte damals schon nicht mal mehr meine Eltern schockiert, kriegt aber Punktabzug for being ein beschissener Wixer.

IDK, all this glam/satanist aesthetics don't appeal to me at all. I can appreciate the music and production, though, these are fun.

A very dark and harshly social album that heralded the end of grunge, but you can still feel its breath in places. In general, the album is positioned as industrial metal, but in it you can hear both the interruptions and blast beats characteristic of death metal, and the complex inclusions of prog metal (yes, a weighted relative of prog rock), gloominess and the frequent splitting technique in vocals for gothic rock , vibrations of new wave synths, noises! In short, I really rethought this dude! The Best songs: Dried up, tied and dead to the world; Tourniquet

I'm not bothered that this artist or album are controversial. This is just rubbish. Awful screaming, I can occasionally pick up the lyrics which are deliberately trying to be controversial to the point of being worthless and boring. The music, when musical, is occasionally industrial hard rock, but nothing special. Up there with Venom and Pere Ubu for most unbelievable album on this list.

Not for me

Liking this more than I thought I would. Cathartic to hear this kind of demented anger. This is another 90's album that I found scary when I first heard it as a young teen, and now it sounds kind of good and kind of stupid. But this beats Korn.

Though I would never deliberately put this on, I didn't hate this as much as I thought I would. However, I must admit, I did listen to this in a private session so it wouldn't mess with my algorithm. Like many albums of this era, it is far too long, and the dark tone of the album becomes exhausting. Their general sound/message is one I hardly ever find myself in the mood for but I understand the appeal.

Some cool sounds on this album for sure. Lyrics are pretty shock-value but, I'm conflicted on them. Cryptorchild is pretty good actually, was not expecting a Mellotron on this album either. I am not sure their usage of "nigger" and "rape" are proper, they are not glorifying those terms but it's always feels a bit exploitive when a white man uses those terms. I mean, from what I can tell he has some racist/sexist comments... yeah. Regardless, musically I don't mind it really, he was most likely playing the media like a fiddle and completely becoming the persona his haters described him as.

Never really listened to Marilyn Manson before - probably too creeped out. Maybe if I'd got past that as an impressionable teen I would've really bought into the whole package, image & disturbing lyrics and all, but that ship has long sailed. Having said that, strip away the shock and the music's pretty good. Some angsty heavy rock anthems but also a few surprising left-turns and inventive sounds (thanks Trent Reznor, I guess?) 3.5

The heavy sounds and music is good but his creepy voice comes across as awkward. He's also cancelled these days and I'll be damned if I'm positively rating a cancelled celeb!

Sexual assault may be the least of his crimes. I can see how a vulnerable teenager could believe these messages of hate and destruction, leading to terrible consequences. Vile disgusting music for depressives. Shame, as some of the riffs are pretty good - it's the lyrical content and vocal delivery that spoils it.

Not sure whether to give a 4 or a 5, but I’ll probably go with a 4. A real shame to see all the low ratings due to what Brian has done. With that being said, this album is a damn masterpiece. The Beautiful People is one of the greatest metal songs ever.

Antichrist Superstar by Marilyn Manson (1996). This is sophomoric wordplay and shamelessly derivative eschatological schlock. Marilyn Manson appears to be confused about the nature of ‘Antichrist’ (which is only to be expected, since the Antichrist himself will likely be confused about the nature of ‘Antichrist’). Antichrist is not, I repeat not, a dualistic opposition to Christ. It is not like the Zoroastrian dualism of Ahura Mazda/Ahriman, or the Taoist dualism of Yin/Yang, or even the Kabbalist opposition of tsim/tsum (despite Manson’s moniker for new guitarist “Zim Zum”, replacing Daisy Berkowitz for the album’s promotional tour). Marilyn Manson is a theological Nestorian. Granted, he is both anti-human and anti-divine, but his pretentious conception of Antichrist fails (as all conceptions of antichrist fail) in that he bifurcates the human and divine, focusing on the ‘anti’ and ignoring the Christ. Nietzsche (to whom the album is dedicated, albeit without a share in the royalties) shared this flaw, but at least Nietzsche had a measure of coherence. If you attack Christ as human, he’ll just die on you. If you attack him as God, you’ll be the one dying. But if you attack him as the One who is fully human and fully divine (two natures united without confusion, change, division, or separation in one divine Person), you’ll end up changing your mind. Hopefully before it’s too late. You see, “antichrist” is, at best, pretense. This is why St. John summarized the “spirit of Antichrist” as denial of the incarnation (1 John 4:2-3). Memorize this fact before you mess with the term. Marilyn Manson and G.K. Chesterton share a common quality—they both have a talent for and preoccupation with discerning paradox. Manson’s paradoxes are solidly and invariably on the dark side, however, while Chesterton’s paradoxes (generally by an indirect route) strive for redemption. Plus, Manson’s paradoxes are of a much poorer quality. But the rhetorical thrust is the same, and the effect is similar, especially as Manson aims for a somewhat lower brow. I set out to highlight all the trite expressions on my lyric sheets, but my highlighter ran out of ink. Antichrist Superstar is not countercultural. It stands firmly on one side of a cultural divide, but it is definitely expressive of a ‘culture’. It just doesn’t happen to be the culture that some would prefer (like Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman and Republican former Secretary of Education William Bennett, who famously described this album/group as “disgusting” and “sick”). What do you expect in a country that sanctions the destruction of its own offspring? This artistic/commercial endeavor is simply capitalizing on a cultural development that had already taken place. Cha-ching. It has some formal trappings of rock ‘opera’, but it’s lacking so many essential elements of narrative or drama that I’m not buying it. Listen to this once (if you must) and move on. 1/5

Listen, I was going to Industrial goth clubs and dancing in cages with the best of them back in the mid-90’s. You’d think I’d be pretty familiar with this one but I’m not. I’ve heard this album hundreds of times, but since Bryan Warner has always freaked me out, it’s not one I’ve ever owned, nor one that I listen to by my own choice. This is the first time I’ve heard it front to back and really listened. There are a couple bops, I guess. But I recall people that I typically think of as having good taste just RAVING about Marilyn Manson. He was supposed to be a Trent Reznor protégée genius and it I dunno, it just feels like shock for the sake of shock, like Ozzy biting the head off a bat. Yeah, that was metal af, but that poor bat. The lyrics are sophomoric and I mostly wish I had skipped this album. I now know what this prick sounds like saying the word Pussy, which my brain has never allowed me to hear before. I may never have sex again. (Please let the next album be a babyface classic or something)

I figured I’d never listened to this beyond Beautiful People, but I got flashbacks to a LAN party in 1998 when Jared was playing this and Mechanical Animals on repeat ALL NIGHT. Jared, you’re a weird one. Anyway, there’s a lot of anger and no subtlety in the writing, and lots of interesting things in the engineering. Important arguments made about hegemony, commercialism, celebrity, but Altogether, it’s about as redeeming as a Nuremberg Rally speech, but still “notable” in a similar sort of way. Glad I listened. Influential artifact of a specific time, and good for a bucket list, not a “best” list.

Screamo music from a horrible person. Nothing amazing in this album worth revisiting. Cancel and move on.

Oh, fuckin' hell.

This took me back to being in elementary school and being horrified by teenagers wearing MM t-shirts in the mall. There's always been a mythology around this album and now that I've actually listened to it... I found it pretty upsetting. Incredibly dark and evil. Disgusting, primordial imagery. Filth. Hate. Suffering. Nightmare fuel. I grimaced while looking at the lyrics. But I think the reason that it caused such a stir when it came out is heavily based in the fact that it's actually pretty good. This was done well enough that it couldn't be written off as bullshit and it caused shock waves. I don't really like it and I don't want to listen to this again but I think I have to give it a 4/5.

I listened to this years and years ago. It's been a minute since I've spent any time with MM. Let's see how it goes... later... Well, heart rate is up, and I'm suddenly angry with my keyboard. So, MM has not changed much since I used to listen. I'm going to cherry pick the rest of this record for old times and then file it away for a few more years.

4.5 | Con toda la nostalgia y siendo un disco que me gusta tanto y que he esuchado cientos de veces, no siento que puedo darle el 5 completo. Es cierto que puede ser demasiado en cuanto a ser de una sola nota, creo que a pesar de lo bueno de este album cualquiera de los dos discos siguientes fueron mejores en su producción y calidad musical (a pesar de aquel punto de que en retrospectiva se debían ver como un tríptico, que funciona bastante bien por cierto). Lo que es cierto es que el lugar lo tiene más que merecido, siempre fue muy facil tacharlo como únicamente shock rock sin valor pero en realidad las letras, el concepto y todo el proyecto tiene mucho más valor, detalle y mensaje de lo que pareciera. En realidad se le puede llamar a cierto grado filosófico; no, en serio, la mezcla de anticristianismo, profecía cabalística, elitismo teosófico, ciencia ficción transformacional y películas de terror en realidad forman quizá uno de los mejores argumentos en contra de la falsa moral e hipocresía de la derecha que en su época tuvieran tal capacidad de difusión. El mensaje de Manson, debajo de ese maquillaje, es que la gente necesita sus pesadillas. No importa cuánto tratemos de ser educados, la ira y el deseo nos reclamarán en la oscuridad una vez más. El sonido de Antichrist Superstar coincide con la grandiosidad de sus argumentos. Sus 16 canciones al estilo Sabbath de los 70, pero más duro; los arreglos se hacen eco de Queen en alcance operístico pero son más intensos; el estado de ánimo debe su frío vampírico a Bauhaus siendo todo en realidad a nivel musical producido y orquestado por Trent Reznor, con una mano que no se podría sentir mas fuerte, termina con un disco que suena espectacular, fuerte, detallado, atascado de capas a pesar del detalle que en efecto hay algunas partes en que su mano quizá es demasiado y la música pareciera que es NIN. Creo que el mayor valor a pesar del mensaje real, valor artístico y otros puntos que tiene el disco es que ese shock rock, ese valor de poder llamar la atención, choquear, confrontar y "espantar" a una generación anterior, siempre se me ha hecho no solo deseable sino necesaria para la juventud y, tristemente, veo casi en total ausencia ese lado en la música actual. Nada llama la atención, nada levanta ni una ceja, la música está demasiado cuidada, pulida y temerosa de decir algo que sea tomado a mal. Esa etiqueta que normalmente se usa peyorativa de shock value es algo que, cuando se realiza bien, aumenta y puede crear un valor artístico y social totalmente nuevo y más fuerte.

Directo en la nostalgia. Es un disco largo que de repente tiene un par de canciones que se pudieron guardar pero en general es muy bueno. Tourniquet fue mi favorita en esta ocasión y The Reflecting God el hallazgo de esta escuchada. Sonido brutal, crítica sin tapujos y un concepto visual sin precedentes en el mainstream (tan mainstream como se le pueda considerar) hacen de este disco un verdadero hito. 4.5 estrellas que suben a 5 porque definitivamente tengo que escucharlo más seguido. Nunca había escuchado este disco completo, pero obvio sí conocía "The Beautiful People", y gracias a Casper, "The man that you fear". Me llamó la atención descubrir que este disco es una "Rock Opera" y las canciones están relacionadas. También me resultó interesante la historia del disco y todo lo que tuvieron que pasar para poderlo grabar. Aunque no es el tipo de música que me gusta, y definitivamente no escucharía el disco muy seguido, debo reconocer que tiene algo de vanguardista, polémico y atrevido que tiene rato que no escucho.

Ya sé que no va a ser popular mi calificación, pero ni en aquella época me gustó (y de hecho me causaba miedo) ni ahora (que ya no me da miedo pero no le veo lo interesante). Sí puedo reconocer su impacto social, cultural y en la música como arte, ese lado es innegable. Pero eso no hace que sea música que me guste escuchar; siento que está demasiado enfocado en transgredir, ser agresivo e incomodar que incluso ellos mismos durante la grabación terminaron mal y eso quizá es interesante como exploración, pero no me llena como arte.

Like the music but the lyrics seem forced on some songs. Huge fan of beautiful people. It's like he's trying to find the tool/nin edge but I don't think it's coming from a genuine place.

...it was better when trent reznor did it back in the late 80s. except the stuff that sounded like kyuss, which was better when kyuss did it. still, it did kind of grow on me by the end, but i was also not sorry to see the end of this one. hard to say whether this was genuinely boring, or if i'm just bitter because it was the next generation's fun instead of my own.

I like the music, but can't really stand Manson and his religious/political views.

Important album in that period. Though I love hard rock and most metal genres, I never was much into Marilyn Manson. Saw him a couple of time live, but the dancers were more impressive than Marilyn himself.

Wat moet ik hier nu van zeggen? Ik ken de beste man alleen van de vreemde verhalen die om hem heen hangen. Oftewel, het is een volslagen idioot! De eerste indruk is dat zijn muziek nog veel idioter is. Op een mobieltje klinkt het in ieder geval nergens naar. Als ik na een kort gesprek met een vage kennis besluit om nog eens te luisteren, valt het toch wel enigszins mee. De muziekstijl is typisch Amerikaanse rock muziek. Het enige speciale aan de muziek is de elektronisch klinkende geluidjes die er soms doorheen zitten, al is dat ook niet heel bijzonder in dit genre. Helaas na de tweede poging nog steeds geen fan van de artiest zelf. Waar de muziek redelijk acceptabel blijkt, moet ik de zanger helaas op muzikaal vlak ook als idioot bestempelen. Je kunt echt groot worden door je als een gek te gedragen, en blijkbaar komt je album dan zelfs in de lijst der lijsten. Wie weet waar Gorden Heukeroth nog ooit terecht komt. Het nummer "Man That You Fear" heeft wel potentie. Misschien een cover of een andere zanger?

Ongetwijfeld een goede plaat. Hij pakt mij soms met een rifje hier en een deuntje daar, maar omdat ik hem ook al twee keer live de zooi heb zien verpesten zal ik er nooit fan van zijn. Album is iconisch en moet idd in de lijst

For the most part this album was not my type of music, but there were a few tracks that I did enjoy.

I was only familiar of a couple of these songs. I more familiar with the stories of Marilyn removing his bottom ribs. The album was good.

It's been decades since I have heard this full album, and it's not as good a si recall. Plenty of great songs, but I still prefer Portrait of an American Family and Mechanical Animals.

At first I was really into this. I really liked the aggressive nature of the music and the quality of the recording and performances are incredible. The problem is it’s pretty long and the longer it went on the more dark and depressing the lyrics got. It’s fine as an art piece but not something I’m going to want to listen to again. Just too depressing.

I was going into this expecting to absolutely hate it, and while I did, I actually found some songs that were pretty good. Very surprised with my final rating.

Antichrist Superstar is an unexpectedly cohesive album from a silly shock metal band and will stand as Marilyn Manson's definitive statement.

Regardless of his allegations, the music itself was kinda bland. Beautiful People is an absolute jam of course and saved this from being a one star. 1996 was pretty fun too but the rest of the album really blended together. Manson was always more interesting because of the visuals in his videos and concerts. Excluding a handful of singles and some really cool covers his music was always kinda “meh” to me.

I lasted until the fifth song. It's chaotic, noisy, dissonant, angry and the guy's voice is... of subjective quality. I saw Manson live at a festival about ten years ago. He was possibly the worst live act I've ever seen - totally wasted and unable to keep up with his playback. Turns out I can't stand him in studio quality either.

Was quite enjoying this at the start. The synth elements make it stylistically more interesting than it would otherwise be. However, it's far too long. By track 9 I just wanted it to finish. If it was more concise and compact it might even be a 4, but as it stands too great a proportion is dirge to get above a 2.

This album is great. Some lesser known Manson tracks on here, but plenty of great jams. Plus some hits.

So I guess it's not OK to listen to Marilyn Manson these days. And I was never a fan of his to begin with, so good riddance.

Surprised by how good the arrangements are on this record. That being said, things tend to get monotonous after a while, and it's hard for things to feel organic with Manson's over-the-top lyrics making everything feel way too on the nose.

Had some great moments. But a lot of duds too.

Its Marylin Manson. 'nuff said. I think a lot of the initial shock of who he is has worn off, kind of like how Metallica used to be the end all be all most evil band. There is always someone new to push the envelope and Manson was it. Take away the theatric that come with his act though and its a pretty run of the mill rock album.

Honestly much better than I expected. I had always thought more energy went into his image than his music from songs here and there.

this album is cool i guess? im kind of a sucker for the 90s industrial sound but i dunno if this is really the best example of it. it kinda sucks actually. if i didnt love the sound so much this would suck. like half the tracks bang but when it tries to get slower it just doesnt work very much, plus its a little too long. i didnt feel the length that much but really only because i had to keep taking breaks in the first half and in the second half i was busy adding an album to rym. so w/e. also he drops the hard r in the CHORUS of the FIRST SONG what the fuck.
