Reviews (page 7 of 14)

Despite the band and album name, only one song is actually about doors.

I like the Doors. Feels like I’m back in Nam, M16 on Rock’n’Roll, stoned outta my box, waiting to shoot up the Viet Cong……

Rating this (like many others) weeks after listening and don’t remember enjoying it as much as expected. However, it is The Doors so feel like I need to relisten and for the sake of the big songs in the album 7/10

Class, not quite a 5 but really enjoyed

One of the great debut albums of all time and one of the greatest opening tracks too. Supposedly the first ever album to have been associated with the term 'gothic'. Perhaps this had something to do with Jim Morrison being highly influenced by the writings of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Anyway, it's on my shelves Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★★☆ (8/10)

Solid album, so many great tracks. I'm not sure it's one I throw on too often, but I'm not mad if it's on.

Bra, spesielt The End

Great music played by solid musicians led by the ultimate front man. Manzarik's organ playing is legendary. It always bothered me that they didn't have a full time bass player. Liked Songs Added: Break On Through (To The Other Side) Light My Fire

Pretty solid album

this shit has been incredible. 4/5

I’ve always liked individual songs by the doors, but this is my first actual album from them. And shocking nobody it was really good, just wall to wall bangers. Also Jim Morrison died on my birthday, so that’s cool. Favorites: Break On Through (To The Other Side), Back Door Man, The End

Some classics.

Shut the front door, The Doors! Für The Doors by The Doors würdi immer mini Doors ufmache. Und sie grad offe lah. Will The Doors by The Doors dörf wenn immer sie möchtet i mini Doors steppe. Grossartig Albums! vier mal d Schueh ade Doormatte abstriiche.

Uhh gfallt mir je meh je mehbchs lose. Viiibe Thr quattro by the quattro

I would give this album even 4.5/5 Great record! Enjoyed from the first note.

Quite a few hits on this one

The Doors are raw in the way that eating an entire onion is. It's powerful, impossible to ignore, made a whole lot of other things better, but also kind of jarring and went too deep down itself. You can't ignore the influence and creativity of this album.

Sonically some of the songs engage my brain on a golden ratio like level. Peel back the thin skin and Jim is a sloppy childish lyricist. The energy and influence this album has makes it worth a listen. It is probably the only album by The Doors that should be on the list.

3.5 RYM

The Doors are awesome, Jim Morrison is captivating, you need to hear this.

Alright alriiiight I get it I like The Doors I think Jim Morrison was worth his star power. Songs like “Break On Through” and “Light My Fire” are culturally ubiquitous at this point. But I really liked the composition of “Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)” for its circusy instrumentation, something I believe was later explored on Strange Days and The Soft Parade. I also liked the swagger of “Back Door Man”. It’s heavy for its time and has a great piano section. This is an easy 4, could honestly be a 5 depending on the day. So much character to everything Jim Morrison stepped in front of, backed by instrumental work that probably lit the studio on fire

6.5/10

Peak 60s, counter-culture era music. Jim Morrison is a legend for a reason and the real unspoken hero is the organist, Ray Manzarek. Would have loved to listen to them live in a smoky club in LA

Quite enjoyable

maybe better than I expect a Doors album? Wasn't expecting much despite knowing 1/2 the songs on this, and owning the vinyl, but some of the deeper tracks hold up, too. IF you can deal with Manzarek's organ, it's a good record

Not a fan of the Doors really but always love The End

8.0/10

So many songs I already kinda knew

The first half of the album was really strong and I enjoyed it immensely. It's the kind of music you want playing on a record player while you just do your own thing. I'm tempted to buy the vinyl. However, I kind of fell off a bit in the second half. I just didn't like the sound nearly as much. Still, I think it was a really strong album.

I love the classic Doors psychedelic sound and this album really captures that. A handful of really awesome songs, especially on the first half of the album. Break on Through, Light My Fire, Twentieth Century Fox are pretty classic songs. Solid 4.

As a known Doors-hater, I was surprised by how many of their hits were concentrated to this one release. End of the Night and Take it as it Comes are the weak points of the album (with Alabama Song coming in close based solely on the "little girl" lyrics). But the rest of the songs are all pretty iconic. The end is prob too indulgent but it gets a pass as the song of Apocalypse Now.

Imagine a slowcore cover of Light My Fire

Solid set of songs. At times energetic, moody, and contemplative all with a psychedelic theme through out. Classic 60’s era album.

This is a classic for a reason, though it gets a bit self-indulgent on the second half. Great listen, very influential.

Do I like The Doors?

I said, "Who are you?" He said, “Jim Morrison. I'm a dead rock star." I said, "I'm not familiar with your work." So he played The Doors. I said, "You're like a crooner in the rock milieu, which I like."

Did the conglomerate "Twenty-First Century Fox" get their name by trying to one-up The Doors? Was never huge on The Doors, but was never really huge on psychedelia. That has changed in recent years so this was a worthwhile listen. Even the two singles still slap.

Alcoholic carny theme music

The Doors is the epitome of the 1970s rock genre. There are only a few artists that captured the spirit of music at that time

Pretty solid stuff.

Never heard before. But so much classics on the list. Great listen and Great Doors sound

Was pretty surprised by this one, I like psychedelic rock. This was one my dad always tried to get me to like and I didn't like it much but this listen I got a bit more into it. Maybe just the right headspace. The end was a solid track, I like the pipe organ

The Doors - always good!

Some real bangers. Feels like half dream and half scarry trip.

Hell yes

Such a classic have listened to it dozens and dozens of times over the years. I Looked At You is an all time fave underrated tune.

Classic

This is my third Doors album from this list, and I have co e to the conclusion that I really like them! Not quite a five star album, but a solid four.

Practically a greatest hits.

Very here for the wandering, magnificent psychedilia of The End. Less here for Jim Morrison singing about little girl's back doors...

I knew the two big hits. A cool ride, loved the organ effect

The greats are excellent. Not much not great

7.2, light my fire and the end were good, beginnings of psychedelic rock

It was

let's set the night on fire. I do love this album. the end was a weirdly meaningful song of my childhood.

So good.

Ohh, I wasn’t expecting much but this is completely bonkers!! The jazzy tone is just incredible mixed with the more 60s rock, just makes it so much flavourful. “Light my fire” has the best inst. I’ve heard, it’s not just trying to show how good the musicians are but the soul of the whole album. Overall very engaging and incredible!! Fav: Light my fire.

Time to live

I didn't like their sound at first; I think I really struggle with the organ as an instrument in anything but like, church music, because there's just something that feels hokey about it when removed from the religious context, but I tried to be open-minded and relisten a couple of times. And then it did grow on me! It reminds me a lot of those Near Eastern shops that somehow still exist in Berkeley. I do think I thought of Apocalypse Now when I was listening to The End.

I'm surprised so many songs I know by The Doors is from this album. I enjoyed the songs I didn't know too but I will say some aging is showing with Back Door Man as far as meaning goes. Cover: why is one of the members coming out of Morrison's eye?! 2/5

Hearing The Doors for the first time when I was young, I remember them blowing me away. Returning to them now I get it, the music is varied and not afraid to take risk, and Morrison is a force, but the album is uneven and really more potential than execution. It's still impressive, I'm rounding up a bit because the base lines are so groovy. I kind of hate the cover though, that's a 1/5 for me.

I wasn't expecting much but I got say this was a great listen. Jim Morrison's showmanship is unquestionable. No wonder the man was so notorious, I knew like two songs on here so I had a gist of what to expect. There were a few misses but overall this album was splendid I can understand why many consider this one of the great psychedelic albums on it's time. F Y E Top 6: Break on Through To The Other Side, Soul Kitchen, The Crystal Ship, Twentieth Century Fox, Light My Fire (extended ver. kicks ass), and Back Door Man Worst: Alabama Song (might be a grower, but for now this irks me a bit), and End Of The Night 4.50/5

This is the peak doors and its brilliant. Hazy, sexy, dangerous, inventive, original, seditious and just damn good.

Schwierig. Eigentlich. Ich weiß nicht. Okay, ich runde auf.

No comments needed - pretty great album!

Not the best Doors album but a good one

This album rocks and I hate the organ. Most this album sounds like the outlook email received sound effect, so I kept checking my email. This album rocks.

Great album

October 8, 2025 Album #768: The Doors by The Doors Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Art Rock, Psychedelia Often called one of the best debut albums of all time, The Doors’ self-titled record is one I’m familiar with. I’m very glad that I got to revisit it today, as it still stands the test of time as a seminal sixties and psych record. The performances here are very noteworthy. Jim Morrison is still an icon to this day with his charismatic vocals and lyricism, Ray Manzarek’s keyboard cuts are still amazing, and John Densmore on drums really holds the sound together. Their performances come together to make an album with a stacked tracklist. There’s so many iconic songs to be found, like *Break on Through* with Morrison’s roaring vocals, the all-timer psychedelic *Light My Fire* with its keyboard solo, and the bluesy *Soul Kitchen*. There’s also the mellow and intimate *The Crystal Ship* and dreamy sounding *End of the Night*. There’s also plenty of innuendo to be found, like in the bluesy *Back Door Man*, haha. However, the epic closer that is *The End* cements this album as an absolute classic. I adore its mysterious sound and Morrison’s memorable lyricism and performance here. It’s an all-timer closer that I love. This album is so psychedelic, and it makes sense as to why it was so influential. While I do think it sort of wanes a bit in the second half, The Doors’ self-titled is a classic debut, and one that I’d really recommend. It’s truly an iconic album that I’m glad I revisited. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, Decent 8 Favorite Tracks: Break on Through (To the Other Side), Soul Kitchen, The Crystal Ship, Twentieth Century Fox, Alabama Song (Whisky Bar), Light My Fire, Back Door Man, End of The Night, Take It As It Comes, The End

Pretty great and unique sound

*** 1/2 The Doors album containing "Light my fire". I like it, however not everything. The Doors are fine, but not one of my absolute favorites.

Quite like this album. Very listenable all the way through. Such a cool 60s - pre70s vibe. Can't go wrong with Light My Fire, really.

Loose and loud, with a vibrant artistic voice.

The killer awoke before dawn He put his boots on

Somewhere between 4&5 but I listened to it Friday

Great album. I've listened to this so often. So, yeah I like it. I think Morrison Hotel is better but one can nitpick here. 4 solid stars.

the ultimate 60s rock sound. so fun and entertaining to listen to

What a great album! So many classic songs!

Classic album that I have heard many times. It's really good with memorable music and amazing vocals. It's really unique in the style of the music and I really like it. Having said that, I have heard these songs many times due to their popularity and presence in pop culture. Great stuff but I don't really need to listen to it just because of how often I get to hear it in every day life.

Back to Back and doesn't disappoint

Was expecting this to sound like The Beatles, so I was preparing to be disappointed, but it turned out to be quite different. It’s hard for me say much about this album because it is extremely simple. I think it balances its dark atmosphere with energetic songwriting really well. The vocals are fun and memorable. Every song is pretty catchy, and these organ melodies all throughout the album are great. It’s early stereo, though, so there’s some annoying aggressive separation (there’s a mono mix, but it sounds worse, in my opinion), but this is probably the best implementation I’ve seen. Surprisingly for an album released in the 60s, it is mixed very well. So yeah, can’t say this albums is all that special, but I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it was.

I used to be very, very into the Doors. I thought they were so cool. But then I became 13. So it's been awhile since I've sat down and really listened to them. They are unique and pretty edgy for their time. This album is pretty cool.

This is the first time listening to this record and it kind of clicked for me. I love the organ on this. 8/10

Some classic tunes.

Hard to believe this is The Doors debut album with Break on Through, Light My Fire, The End. The Doors have always borderlined "eerie" for me. Their weird psychedelic sound just feels like Halloween for me. Great album. Can't imagine what Vietnam war movies would be like without The Doors.

Great album

Loved this. Don’t even have words - just a good album start to finish. The lyrics were great. Shoutout to Redhead Hemp for providing the necessary vibes.

Great memories with this one. If not for a couple very dark songs it would be a 5

just great rock. a lot of questionable obsession with 'little girls' but the rock is timeless

Despite this not being my most favorite band or album, if I had to make a time capsule for a future millennia, I’d put this album in it. So many hits, and it’s a perfect reflection of the direction music was moving in at the time. Fun fact: the doors performed at my high school when they were just starting!

Always great to listen to. Even though I think you need to be in the right mood and place ;)

Canciones favs: break through, soul kitchen, light my fire, back door man, I looked at you y the end.

It's pretty good

I love the sound of the synthesizer used in this album. Favorite song: The Crystal Ship, Light My Fire

Great start with break on through Also knew light my fire Pretty funky music would listen to again

4 stars A classic album. The Doors are unique in their sound and their time and place in rock n roll history. From Jim Morrison’s poetic lyricism to Ray Manzarek’s keyboarding, there’s a little something for everyone… but also things to be annoyed at. The extended keyboard solos aren’t for everyone. And “The End” kind of only works for people who already know about the song and even so, does anyone enjoy all 11 minutes? But I guess it’s important that they did it. It’s not perfect. There’s a lot of filler on side 2, and that’s assuming “The End” isn’t considered filler. But side one is fantastic.

Classic, pure psych rock. I'll admit, the album got a little weird for me at times but the instrumentation always kept me tapped in.

Banger of the Album: Soul Kitchen Loved it, wish I could give it a 4.5 but the stars won't let me so it has to get a 4

- Hello, Mrs Morrison, what's your Jim doing these days? - What isn't he doing?

Definitely sounds like the 60s but doesn’t sound dated. I can see why they made an impact.

When I think of 60s rock I think of the doors. Iconic album. But Morrison's poetry eww. What was with ‘back door man’??? Would give it a 5star if the keyboardist had calmed down. Was a bit much

They came right out of the gate with this one! I’m not the world’s biggest The Doors fan but I really dug this album and had a great time listening.

Cant go wrong with The Doors

By far the best Doors album IMHO. Not sure if they every really caught lightning in a bottle again like they did on this one.

Really incredible what three guys could accomplish with such minimal elements, and how iconic and historical their sound became.

Awesome

Really enjoyed the back half of this. The singles are classics for sure but the psychedelic droning songs towards the end are amazing. Will come back to this for sure

I hate them referencing women as “little girls”, but other than that the music was great.

This is what I think of when I think of the Doors, and this is good.

76/100. A solid debut that took a bit of time to grow on me. The second half of the album stands out as stronger than the first. Still, it’s a consistent record overall, with excellent production and sound quality, especially impressive considering its age.

Their best. They never topped this one. Solid albeit weird and somewhat unsettling. Some of it hasn't aged well. Still, a quality listen. After hearing The End, I feel like watching Apocalypse Now.

Never sat down and listened to a Doors record before but I fully understood their place in rock history. I throughly enjoyed this album. The hits are hits for a reason but even outside the hits this album is incredibly solid

I have mixed feelings about this. Yes, a timeless classic. But there’s some kinda janky filler on here too, for me anyway. You’ve heard the big tunes, Ad infinitum, so there’s no big surprises except The End seems to go on about three days longer than I remembered. But the enduring success and legacy of this album buy it an extra star from me.

I think the ones I like are actually quite similar to the ones that don't do much for me, it's just that I've heard them enough to enjoy being familiar with them.

Mellow - really nice jazzy beats - early rock - drummer on fire z

Excellent album!

I knew two of the songs but listening to the album gave me a new appreciation for Light My Fire. Alabama Song was also a fun one.

A great debut. Almost perfect if not for the end dragging on too long.

so outdated it’s cool again.

First time listening to the doors. I usually am picky about vocals and like songs despite the singing, not because of it. Unfortunately because of the extremely nice baritone vocals here, it makes me pay attention to the lyrics. Which isn't great because these lyrics aren't the best. Fortunately there's some GREAT organ to make up for it. Love it. (I also don't like Alabama song. Which is a shame because I really like hammered dulcimers. ) Overall it wasn't bad; in fact quite good; and the one disliked song and mid lyrics did not skew the average too much. 8/10 Favorites: The Crystal Ship; End of the Night; The End; Light My Fire; Take It as It Comes; Soul Kitchen

This was done great, especially considering the time period this was released and how overall interesting this is. The entire album has amazing singing from Jim Morrison as well as surprisingly done keyboarding by Ray Manzarek. The album has an overall mix of emotions to very enjoyable music on songs like "Soul Kitchen" to depressing and sad songs like "The End". This album is consistent with its music and the quality of it. The part between Light My Fire and The End does seem to be essentially what I think of as filler tracks due to how much I felt it lacks compared to the other amazing tracks. I feel like there is something here for everyone. With some exceptions, the entire album is extremely consistent in quality. Overall, I give this my full recommendation due to how enjoyable it is overall.

Loved this one, super experimental, but amazing coherent storytelling. All in all a very enjoyable listen

Overall the album is a 3, but the best songs bring it up to a 4 for me.

Fun one to start with! Listened on the couch while home alone. Liked the vibe and the style, interesting blues mix in with the rock and even some polka in one song. I've heard Light My Fire plenty but never knew its origin or anything about it, also fun to get some actual listening time of Jim Morrison given how much I've heard about him.

Too many commercial interruptions

Cheers to fun synth solos

for some reason i thought riders on the storm was on this album

Interesting. There is a wide use of instruments. All the songs sound amazing. I was not blown away by any song, but very much appreciated each of them. I would probably listen to any of these songs again and possibly the whole album. "Take It as It Comes" was surprisingly my favorite of the album. It's a simple track, but does a lot in the 2:15. "Light My Fire" was a good catchy tune with a strong instrumental in the middle. Jim Morrison is a very strong vocalist.

I'm not really a Doors fan overall...but with this album they really captured a spark that still burns bright so many years later. Bravo!

Probably not unoriginal, but it sure sounds it. Even the deep cuts I've heard in the music they've inspired.

It's been a really long time since I last listened to this album. Its alchemy cannot be denied. The magic of music is that it can transcend time and place. Listening to a song can instantly transport you from whatever mundane middle-aged moment you're experiencing and place you right back in the middle of an exciting memory that you haven't thought about in 30 years... The relationship between this album and me personally - that's exactly the problem - too many memories... When I hear the brooding music and the mysterious lyrics, it places me dead center of so many dumb antics from my teenage years that it's a tough record for me to listen to... Attempting to separate myself from my memories, this album is the culmination of a lot of great rock bands that preceded it, as this album also gave birth to exponentially more bands and even more want-to-be front men. I don't know how you give this album anything other than 5 stars. Every song triumphs (except for maybe 20th Century Fox.) I just really wish I wasn't such an idiot teenager.

Great debut album! 1001 album worthy: Yes - 104/193

Very good album. Solid music.

Banger

I feel like The Doors embody the psychedelic rock movement of the late 60s. They had such an iconic, recognizable sound. Solid album with some killer songs on it.

Pretty good. Nothing notable enough to comment on.

Not even done 100 albums and this is my third doors album. The best one of theirs that I have had. 4/5

I don't think there is any better introduction to a band (first album, first song) as break on through. It is their philosophy of song and music all in one piece. In reality the album is mostly about sex, but the musical philosophy stands strong. 4.5/5

Mixed bag for me. I can only imagine how different this sounded as mainstream music in 1967. Obviously there are a few songs which are way too famous to look at objectively but a number of tracks still really feel atmospheric and absolutely fresh. Caught by surprise by I Looked at You which really felt like prime pop Beatles, while others are absolutely drawling, psychedelic rock. Really enjoyed but think I need more listens.

I mean it broke thru the other side

I like the Doors - compared to the earlier Claptom/Mayall paint it by numbers Blues rendition I appreciate their Dionysian interpretation. Any Doors album on here is likely to have a four star floor with me - however this falls a little short of the extra star - I probably prefer their later albums - the organ can be a little too Wurlitzer-y Circus/carnivalesque here at times, and The End is a little too overblown/long.

The 16 yr version would had said this was a perfect album. The almost 50 year old guy thinks think this is an almost perfect album.. Whiskey bar was almost perfect, and then it turn Epstein creepy. The End has an Oedipus complex.

Parts that are great are really great. Other times it’s borderline carnival music in a bit cool way

First listened to this in 2021. Another 60s showing. This is an album that has a sound but explored it. Didn't become samey. Vocals can be meh at times, but instrumentals are dreamy. Best tunes: break on through (to the other side), soul kitchen, alabama song (whisky bar), light my fire [instrumental jam], end of the night

Beste låt: The End

Sooo many classics

Break on Through (To the Other Side) 4.4 Soul Kitchen 4.2 The Crystal Ship 4.3 Twentieth Century Fox 4.1 Alabama Song 4 Light My Fire 4.5 Back Door Man 4.1 I Looked at You 4 End of the Night 4 Take It as It Comes 3.9 The End 4.6 Score: 4.190909091

The first Doors album has more hits and well known songs on it than I was expecting. The Doors are easy to goof on--I guess Jim Morrison--particularly. But this album rocks, listened to a few times. I can see how it would have been so far fucking out when it came out.

Let me make this clear: Jim Morrison was a terrible lyricist. Having said that, this was a cracking album to get on a sweltering Saturday. If you can ignore the terrible lyrics, The Doors is a tight and inventive 1960s rock band. Ray Manzarek is a stand-out but the dynamic between the band members is great. They must have been extraordinary live. The obvious big-hitters are here - Light My Fire and Break On Through - but the Brecht/Weil cover (Alabama Song) and the whimsical The Crystal Ship shine brightly. On the other hand, their cover of Backdoor Man sees Morrison posturing and pouting in the worst possible way. An album that's undeniably great but not perfect.

16/1001 The Doors - s/t Listened Before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ The hits are incredible on this for me personally. The trippy 8 minutes of Light My Fire, The End - sublime and the opener - Break On Through. Yes there are some duds, but this is still such a great album.

Rating: 8.5/10 What a great debut, some of their most iconic songs but a few underwhelming songs as well.

A strong debut that probably was more impactful at the time then it is hearing it today. A mix of blues, jazz elements, psychedelic rock, and Jim Morrison's sophomoric poetry but electric presence, it is unique and fresh compared to much of the music of the time. Today it seems less so, but it comes out of the gate hot and only contains a few outright misses ("Alabama Song"). A legendary debut.

🚪(pretty good)

its good

Some solid tunes

Not the biggest DC fan or even a rock/metal head - but has it ever sounded better?

jim morrison's voice is delicious? I have these songs running on repeat in my mind. so freaking catchy

Such an iconic and influential album, especially considering it was their debut. A lot of their influences from Jazz, Blues, and R&B really shine through too. Break on Through is an amazing opener. Break on Through (To the Other Side) Soul Kitchen Light My Fire Back Door Man I Looked at You End of the Night The End I will say that Light my Fire and The End make almost half of the entire albums runtime, which is something to consider when rating the whole album. 7/11

I remember when I discovered this album. My friends were talking about how 'The End' would be a great track for the end of the world, and that sparked my curiosity. So when I first listened to this album, not only I was surprised that 'Break on Through' was also here, but also I found out how good, catchy and powerful the songs are. There are so memorable moments in here, from the screamed chorus, to the keyboard solos to the epicness of the closer track. I said all these good things about it, but I'm giving it 4 stars because it isn't one of my favourite albums of all time. Still an excellent experience, nonetheless.

Off the cuff remark: The stunning and mesmerising long montage of napalm and Willard losing it in Apocalypse Now, with "The End" central to it was my introduction to the Doors. The scene and music has stuck with me as one. As such I am a bit of a "greatest hits" fan. This has some ans the other tracks don't impress me much. Standout track: aside from aforementioned; Break On Through and Light My Fire are great. Revisit?: Probably the 3 standaout tracks are great. The others do leave me a little cold. I'm not a subscriber to the Morrison cult.

Decent album with some certified hood classics like. Break On Through - Fantastic song, great opening for an album, very late 60s Soul Kitchen - Great track, distinct intro/melody Alabama Song - Fun track Light My Fire - Great song, even though the organ solo does drag on it a bit Take It as It Comes - Fantastic song The End - Spooky but drawn out imo

Oui ok c’est pas mal j’avoue

The best of this band and a terrific debut album. I don't buy into the "Morrison was a poet" motif ("Ride the snake. The snake is long."?), but there's a great variety of songs on here, and, despite myself, I really like "The End."

Pretty good stuff, perhaps a bit self-indulgent at times.

FUCK YEAAAAH! always love listening to this album. the way they blend the amount of genre influences while maintaining a sense of sonic consistency is remarkable. the only thing thats lowkey mid are the lyrics but besides that, this album is a tens across the board. difficult to pick a favorite song bc I'd just list off half the album lol

Mostly loved it!

Hell yeah. Morrison and company deliver both big catchy hits and deep in this incredibley solid album. A classic for a reason, never gets old.

Sehr gut. Sehr melodisch. Hatte ich so nicht erwartet.

One of the albums from the '60s that I only discovered a few years ago. Of course, I already knew the classics "Break on Through" and "Light My Fire." Ultimately, the reason for listening to the entire album was a recommendation from a friend. And I don't regret it; it's truly excellent. What bothers me a bit is the organ sound, or rather, the dominance of the organ. It reminds me of church music, and I don't want anything to do with the church theme.😉 Nevertheless, they are all great songs.

i like organs too much to stay semi-dismissive of the doors forever, call this another stop on the way them becoming Perfectly Enjoyable Music. whats funny tho is that ive long held onto a sort of truism that i get the mystique but not rly the music, i think thats inverted over time...the whole dark seedy hippie jim morrision thing was kinda lost on me as a vivid color this listen (FAR from my first, ive been trying to "get" this album for ages lmao), but the cool instrumental setup that often de-emphasizes obviously followable guitars in favor of this fucked up kaleidoscope of somewhat equally weighted and attention grabbing elements rly made some Visceral Sense to me this time. jim morrision is surprisingly unrelatable for a guy who spends ten minutes moaning and screaming about his mom but the insistent Drama of his voice gets me just a little bit. prob will never be one of my fave records or anything lol but not at all a bad portrayal of a Just Slightly Off bar band that semi-accidentally summons something from the gates of hell. the end absolutely rules ofc but it does have me kind of yearning for sister ray yk....

8/10 - Very nice album, I’m a huge fan of Jim Morrisons vocals, there’s a really nice collection of songs, however the flow of the album and themes it presents could be made more cohesive

Pretty Cool

There are a few duds on here for sure, but on balance, I like it a little better than L.A. Woman.

I love the doors sorry

I first heard "Break On Through" on a trailer for an NFT (Remember those?) MMO. To the surprise of no one, the game either failed or was never made. "Self Titled" is way better than any NFT in existence. Every song has a charm to it. I hope to have another great album soon. 4 stars for "Self Titled".

Very influential

Favourite was back door man unreal vocals

good debut album by a classic American rock band

Great album, something my dad used to listen (probably still does) a lot when I was growing up. It has some of the more well known songs like Break on Through and Light My Fire but also some deeper cuts like The Crystal Ship (Banger). Did enjoy this one for something not in my rotation.

Classic. Quite psychedelic at times.

It's a very good album, the sound is a very interesting and quite unique mix of hard rock, blues and psychedelic rock. Morrison's voice works great for the style, the guitar playing is great and the organ work is a standout, complementing most of the songs. I also like how weird they get at times. The album flows well, mixing calm moments and powerful hard rock tracks without feeling jarring. It did feel a bit long, maybe a couple of songs could've been cut. In terms of favourites, this album has many tracks that have become classics, as "Light My Fire", "Break On Through" and "The End". "Twentieth Century Fox" was interesting too, and I liked how weird "End of the Night" sounds too.

This was a great debut album. Break on Through and Light My Fire are solid tracks.

Yeah I didn’t like L.A woman when I got it a few months ago but clearly my opinion on this band must’ve changed as this was brilliant imo. 4 stars

✌️

Do the kids still listen to The Doors? I used to like them in high school. I don't really like them any more but they have their time and place when you're young and getting into music. This album is a great one – solid through and through, with iconic tracks and only one skip (I Looked At You). TBH this is probably in the conversation for greatest debut album of all time: a distinct, new sound, interesting lyrics and about as much variety as you can get from a band that consists only of a vocalist, guitarist, drummer and an organist. Anyway, any album that spawns a track used in a Coppola film is fine at the very least, and very good – if you like The Doors.

So many movie scenes pop in my head. A solid all around listen.

This is the end

Lots of great songs I was already familiar with. Classic DOORS

I really like it besides alabama whisky bar

Such a strong debut. Still holds up well.

Classic rock record. Bordering on 5.

Freaky but I liked it 7/10

Ég skil vel af hverju Doors varð svona stórt band. Eðallög í alla staði og hún gefur aldrei neitt eftir. Mig langar að hlusta á þessa plötu oftar. Það myndi líklegast toga hana úr fjórum upp í fimm

I went in rooting against this album. I don't know why (I do know why, I just don't want to admit that I thought it was dad rock and I'm on the record against dad rock). I just did. But damn if it didn't turn me into a fan by the end of the album.

música de maconheiro

One of the most iconic opening songs on a debut album ever. Ray Manzarek is the MVP here, clearly establishing The Doors as a separate entity compared to their contemporaries. The worst thing about The Doors' debut? It's no L.A. Woman.

This record totally holds up, even the ridiculous "The End." Any cracking on the Doors is well-deserved but the spooky, easy decadence of this record is infectious. Bubblegum gothic. Plus, I haven't heard the garagey non-hits like "I Looked at You" and "Take It as it Comes" since college.

I long ago moved past my Doors obsession but acknowledge this as an important milestone in American psychedelia. Time hasn't exactly endeared me to Jim Morrison's flat, affectless voice, nor to the bombast of "The End" (I think "When the Music's Over" and "Riders on the Storm" are superior long-jam album closers). But there are some solid jams here and Manzarek's keyboards lend a kind of dark carnival vibe to the proceedings.

I feel like, had he lived longer, Jim Morrison would have had a blast writing a Broadway musical, that he would have fallen in love with writing musicals, and would have spent the rest of his life penning musicals with titles like "Temptress Sally" and "The Vegas Deathfire" and "Love, Not For Me" ....

I loved this band when I was 12 because I had only started listening to rock music and buying my own LPs. I thought this was SO DEEP because I was a preteen and didn't know any better. The combo of organ and guitar still sounds fresh. Only The Stranglers did it better. The End is too much, but I still like the Brecht/Will cover.

Heard it before. What a great album 4/5

Gledeleg overraska over kor kontant mesteparten var, altså.

Some big tunes here.

Some great songs

Five owned albums in a row - and another inherited vinyl from my brother- listened this one over & over 4/5 #musicsky #albumsky

this album deserves all the hype and is the doors' best

The singles from this album are all perfect. Love them. The rest of the album can't maintain those highs, but overall it remains excellent.

I’ve listened to this album a few times before but it never really stuck out to me, I liked it a lot more on this version. It struck me how keyboard-focused it was as opposed to guitar-focused. I do think Jim Morrison has some great lyrics. I also appreciate their use of different modes that are not super conventional for pop music. I know the Doors are seen as very drug-influenced music, but it doesn’t really feel like that to me. Fav tracks are The Crystal Ship, Light My Fire, and End of the Night.

Would listen again; reminds me of my mom; Jim has such a way about him! Faves: break on thru, light my fire, twentieth century fox; the end

Hard to imagine a better debut album than this. They would have greater commercial successes, of course (particularly after Morrison's death), but it really feels like they could only repeat themselves of go downhill from here.

These guys must have been absolute nutters. 60's music as well which is quite something. Clearly some songs sound very dated and the electro keyboard thing I dont think always helps with that but still impressive. "Before you slipped into unconciousness I would like another kiss" "1000 pills a 1000 thrills" 20th century fox - Worst song Solo section in Light my fire - Great Back door man - For the music if you ignore the vocals The End - Slightly mental but great song. I dont think I ever gave the doors any credit. Critically listening has given me a new found interest for their music.

top songs: i looked at you, soul kitchen, crystal ship, break on through, twentieth century fox really good intros to songs, interesting instrumentation

it’s pretty good, break on through always a fave

Good that

Definitely need to relisten to enjoy it more fully but this was a pretty solid album.

Good, but a little meandering

Simple happy lyrics. 50s 60s sound. A little Beatly. Staccato organ/keyboard sound.

This album has some ridiculous highs. Light My Fire is a trancendental song: the organ, Morrison's singing, the subtle mysteriousness in the versus, it's just so good. Break On Through (To The Other Side) is also a clear winner that has stood the test of time. The rest of the album is interesting. This is yet another album with a circus song, as Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar) is really goofy and it's almost whiplash going from that to the best song on the album. I think it just doesn't work as an album as well as L.A. Woman, but it's still overall pretty good and great contrast to the pop of the era.

some bangers, some nonsense, overall a great album

Solo solo solo BAM solo. One whole end to end solo (positive). Imagine listening to The End for the first time again

Doors. Some parts reminded me almost of a chanting religious sound cult y but good

Brilliant debut and has some absolute classics on there, a real classic album from a band that have never really been replicated. Love this band and all the chaos that they created in their short life! A must listen to for me

Holds up nearly 60 years later....

Good old 60's/70's rock. No Zeppelin, but still classic.

Love me some Light My Fire

Classic! The Doors are so polarizing, people either love or hate them. Jim Morrison was a great performance artist

enjoyed this one. Good melodies, good vocals, catchy music. Good overall

enjoyed this more than i expected. i remember a bunch of these from when i was a kid but i appreciate them much more now

I liked it -- just a little too old-timey sounding for me.

Historic album from The Doors. Big hits, enjoyable keys/organ and vocals. 8/10 (4/5)

absolute classic

Although contains a bunch of great hits still creates a balance between well-known songs and less-known ones. I definitely enjoy the listen it's worth it

Pretty classic album which basically shows the turning point of music in the sixties. A necessary inclusion to the list but a little inconsistent for my liking. Also the last song sucked but the rest of the album is still great!

Great album

One of the best albums that I rarely listen to. Every time I do I'm reminded how great it is, and then I don't listen to it again for years.

Astonishing debut album, the sound already confidently locked down, and instantly influential. Listening in the cold light of day I have to admit there are weaker tracks too. Then, LA Woman is a stronger album, so I'm going to surprise my 17 year old self and mark it down to 4.5 stars.

5/11, 45%

Good. Some classic songs. Would listen again

3.75/5 consistently enjoyable

-Good for lounging, or hanging around later at night like post bar vibes -I liked the vast majority of the album -has re-listenability for sure

Full of all the good 60s feels, and it was a great way to feel like I was on drugs for forty minutes. It honestly kinda felt like psychedelic time travel. It's not like all of the songs are of very good quality, though, and some of them run more off of vibes than anything. Interesting for sure, but far from perfect.

pretty goooood

very nice!

these guys are always cool. absolute monster of a last song

Excellent, and a classic.

Pretty enjoyable, I just wish he would sing about little girls a bit less

Fine, fine fine, this is OK. I guess even if you're a card carrying members of the anti-Doors society, it's hard to knock some of the hits on this album, and it's quite noticeable that Morrison was still at least vaguely cognisant of the need to be 'a singer' and 'coherent' at this point. I do think The End is great to be fair, it feels like it was written to be used in films, but that's probably some after-the-fact-ing from me.

I've never been a big The Doors listener but they've got some great songs. "Break On Through" and "Light My Fire" are my favorites from this album.

The Doors seemed to have debuted at the perfect time. Kicking off 1967, the year of the forthcoming Summer of Love, this January 4th drop feels both prescient and well-timed. Sure, they do the psychedelic rock thing, which wasn’t hard to see bubbling up to the mainstream in 1966, but The Doors also do something different. Unlike so many psychedelic records that followed, The Doors’ self-titled actually, well, ROCKS! The hard-hitting “Break on Through” sets the spark, but it really burns with “Light My Fire,” which, for all intents and purposes, shreds, especially in the solo/bridge section. These two songs serve as tentpoles for the album overall, and allow The Doors to explore what it means to be a ✧・: *✧psychedelic rock band ✧ *:・✧ across a larger spectrum. From here, we get bluesy jams that rip in a more respectable manner like “Soul Kitchen” and “Twentieth Century Fox,” we get more a stereotypical California-hippie take in “Take It as It Comes,” and more solemn, spaced out takes on “End of the Night.” It even allows for sonic detours like “Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar),” which, sure, is incredibly hokey, but also still kind of fun and catchy. Of course, this all cumulates with the epic psychedelic closer “The End,” which still holds a lot of power almost 60 years after the fact. Not everything here hits the mark, though. I do think “The Crystal Castle” is a bit too spaced out. The bluesiness of the cover of “Back Door Man” is boring as hell, as it always is on these ‘60s records. Worst of all, “I Looked at You” feels oddly thin, almost like an attempt at a teeny-bopper single, which obviously feels strange when pitted against the legitimately strong, timeless singles this album is typically remembered for. Now, none of it is all that deep. Truthfully, Morrison is not this wizard poet like your Boomer neighbor who sells fleece patchwork jackets would want you to believe. These are songs about sex, drugs, and rock and roll– mainly the first two. But for songs about sex, drugs, and rock and roll, they sure are fun as hell, whether you’re sober, drunk, or high, and they are certainly sexy as hell, that’s for sure. This fun approach to variety-within-loose-parameters is this album’s greatest strength. With time, The Doors seemed to lose some of their magic. They seemed to get too absorbed in the psychedelic thing, and then WAY too absorbed in the straight-blues rock, with brief tangents into Tin Pan Alley that seem to last a lifetime. While those elements are found on this debut, they are far worse on other records released only a few years outside of this, so they actually feel brilliant in retrospect here. More annoyingly, though, The Doors abandoned what made these hits so special, and that is that they didn’t “fit into” the era. Sure, they’re psychedelic rock songs in theory, but they’re also so much bigger than that, sonically speaking. And they’re fun! You can’t really make those arguments for the rest of the band’s catalogue. The Doors’ debut does have its flaws. I think its position in the canon has been solidified a bit too much, and there are some valid issues that we need to admit moving forward. But the majority of it holds up a million times better than I thought it would. They truly struck lightning with this one, and if they had even waited one more month to release it, I doubt it would have been as special. Even if it’s not the greatest record I’ve ever heard, this debut is so good, I can forgive them for never striking lightning ever again.

As insufferable as Jim Morrison is, this album is undeniable at times.

Excellent

Good 60s pop-rock. Liked the use of the organ? I think… Need a repeat listen.

I've been thinking I should get into The Doors more. This album confirmed that.

I loved the Doors. This has some great tunes and performances and some that are fairly weak. I collected all of the Doors albums and, unfortunately, they were all uneven. But, when they shined they were untouchable.

I vibe with it. End of the Night was great

Great!

Excellent album.

Pretty sure I’ve never heard a full Doors record prior to this but I know all the big singles and enjoyed the songs I didn’t know. For a debut to contain “Break On Through (To The Other Side)” and “The End,” that’s a crazy accomplishment!

Absolute classic

Sweet electronic blues. Love the Organ. Somewhat monotonous. Particularly enjoy "Soul Kitchen" and "The End"

Break on Through (To the Other Side) - 5/5 Soul Kitchen - 5/5 The Crystal Ship - 4/5 Twentieth Century Fox - 5/5 Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) - 4/5 Light My Fire - 5/5 Back Door Man - 3/5 I Looked at You - 2/5 End of the Night - 3/5 Take It as It Comes - 5/5 The End - 4/5 (loooong but nice) Average score: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ a classic. no complaints.

My late teenage days... and beyond... Some songs are less apealing now -Break on through for instance) but despite having heard them too much I stil believe it's a reat album.

Morrison, the perfect poster boy for every teenage crisis—the “tortured poet” (“back door man” is an example he wasn’t) who flew too close to the sun. Theoretically not my cup of tea, but this debut album is clearly more than just Morrison. From the first listen, it transports you straight to the late ’60s while still feeling quite relevant today. The keyboards are blending seamlessly with the guitar, a sound that is instantly recognizable. But The Doors always seemed a bit overrated to me … and they are quite bad when they try their hand at blues. Yet it is the band at their best, an exceptional debut and a great classic when it comes to the few really amazing songs.

This was a great album, The Doors just know how to make good music. Light My Fire is a phenomenal track but I do think some of the other tracks meander on too long.

One of my fav albums! The end is one of the best songs ever made.

Classic, great memories of some of the tracks on this from my yout

Lots of decent songs. Some od hia poetry/lyrics are a bit shit. ( 'The west is the best") it's a mixed bag but important.

Classic.

This is an incredible debut and probably melted people's brains in 1967 (I hope it did). The second half gets a little slow but it's still very listenable. I'll always be a fan of The Doors. 4.0.

I often forget how into The Doors I was in high school but it's times like this that remind me why. I drank the kool-aid many many years ago, and while I don't listen to The Doors as much anymore (not nearly as much as I should), anytime they come on I find myself defending them as one of the best American bands of all time. This debut album is a perfect example of why. The makeup of the band created such a distinct style that hasn't been captured otherwise. Jim Morrison is an absolute force on vocals. Crazy to think he was belting some of these tracks out in his early 20's while still growing into the face of the band and an incredible front man. His voice acts as additional instrument with the depth, inflection and timing that help drive the melody beyond just a straight vocal track. He can bark and howl like the best of them and his off-kilter added noises add so much character to the album. Outside of Jim, Ray Manzarek is the real identity of the band and his organ/piano accompanying his key-bass lines separate them from so many other acts. The range in his solos and depth to his multi-instrument play carve The Doors out as much more than a standard 4-piece band. Due to the other characters in the band I find John Densmore is underappreciated. His drum work is overlooked in how it punctuates the rest of music. He's happy to sit in the back and carry the engine of the album, but there's some notable drum leads throughout their discography that I feel are overlooked (notably The End on this album). I've always appreciated Robby Krieger's flamenco guitar style. While this debut album has some of his identity in it, it's amazing how much better Krieger gets as the band grows. The solos and backing guitar are relatively simple on this album which allows more space for Jim and Ray to do their thing. Hard to believe that a relatively notable guitarist might actually be the weak point in a rock band. All of this adds up to a fantastic debut album from The Doors. Side A is a smash with no weak entries at all. Side B has a lull in the middle but it can't be ignored due to The End and establishing a Doors niche of including a long jam to close an album which I've always personally loved. Even with their legacy I find The Doors to be slept on. It's incredible what they were able to put together within basically a 5+ year run (excising any work post-Jim). I'll continue to defend The Doors and hope they get additional representation on this list as their work deserves to be heard and discussed beyond occasional radio hits. I could wax poetic about The Doors and this album forever so I'll try to wrap it up. Give me more reasons to listen to The Doors! 4.25 stars

Overall a strong classic rock album. To me, "The End" is ponderous and takes away from it.

this would go well with that skunk from listening to cream the other day

Lounge lizard

sounds like the doors

Haven't heard this one in a long time. Almost campy, early Batman tv show - but the power of Morrison's barritone and the unique fusion of keys and guitar make this a quintessential late 60s album.

Touch me would’ve made it a 5

14/02/25 A classic album.

They rock hard, but I am glad we have evolved past those particular keyboard settings

High drama, unique sound, powerful vocals, dark and moody, sexy psychedelic rock. It's kind of cliche now but when I was young it was a staple of every party. Light My Fire and This is the End should have both been whittled down to three minutes though.
