New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84)

Like a lot of dream pop-y new wave, this is good and I enjoy listening to it, but a lot of it sounds the same and I don't think that I'll ever put this in regular rotation. I can see why this would stand out for people who are more into this sound, but it's seldom more than just fine for me. C+

I like this more than I do their big single. There aren't really any songs that jump out at me, but I do think this is a nice, cohesive whole. Herbie Hancock does a solo and that's cool.

Very 80s, Nice little jam, some good songs, but too 80s for me to appreciate heavily.

Ach ja, die Achtziger. Es war nicht alles schlecht. Einige Songs kommen nicht recht in die Gänge, insgesamt aber eine solide drei. Mir gefällt der Sound einfach (besonders Promised You a Miracle). Man kann dem Menschen nicht die Achtziger, sondern nur den Menschen aus den Achtzigern nehmen.

C'est un petit supplice d'écouter tout cette album. Je suis en retard sur mes écoutes donc je n'ai pas vraiment le gout de le terminer. Surtout que c'est probablement l'album qui sonne le plus générique que j'ai écouté de toute ma vie. Chaque chanson semble être la même. C'est pas mauvais, mais tellement répétitif. Mention spéciale au joueur de basse qui brule l'album. 2.75

Pretty good 80's fare

Jim Kerr hasn't quite found his trademark voice, sometimes sounding like Howard DeVoto, but you definitely see the arena rock mega stardom that's to come. An excellent 80s rock album. 4.5 🌟

Very 80s, meh

This was a surprise for me. Enjoyed it quite a bit.

Another band where I only knew the hits and had never really listened to a full album. I didn't mind this, they've carved out their own coherent sound, and those singles such as Promised... are pretty good.

This is not good.

This album managed to be so stereotypically yet inoffensively 80s that it really went in one ear and out the other. Couldn’t name you a single melody beyond some vague gestures at chorus-heavy guitar if I tried.

Listened to this on a road trip. It's ok. A little repetitive, but some good songs on there here and there in between all the synth.

It took me a minute to get into, but once I did I really enjoyed. I get some Jim Morrison vibes from the lead singer. The music itself is a hypnotizing pulsating blend of new wave and synth pop. Though the use of synth and echo dates the album a bit, it comes together very well. The arrangement is careful and deliberate and creates a sense of suspension and release throughout.

Classic album from the '80s. Loved this at the time, still do. Has some f the 80s dated feel, but fares a lot better than most.

Not as earth shattering as Jim Kerr thinks it is. Simple Minds belongs on this list, but not for this album (I'm a sucker for "Once Upon A Time").

This has some great singles and a neat title track, but also has a few boring songs that go for way too long (Colours Fly for instance). Musically wise, I like the bass a lot plus the delivery in the vocals, but the guitar is pretty low in the mix and the keyboards are pretty dated. The medieval album cover design is cool though. On a side note I found out through the Wikipedia page that Herbie Hancock did a solo on Hunter and the Hunted, a peculiar fact.

I never dove into simple minds, sort of discounted them. Better than I expected but not on the same level of similar artists at the time.

Not much variety to what I’m hearing here. And I’m not much of a fan of SM except for Give me Don’t You (Forget About Me) and Alive and Kicking, which aren’t on this. This album isn’t for me.

The video for Promised You A Miracle shows the band playing guitar, bass and drums but I swear I can't hear any of those instruments. And that's part of my problem with this album, everything is synthesized. It really dates it. Sure, it's listenable enough and I suppose it's quite cool in a retro kind of way. Singer sounds like countless other singers from the same period. Some of the keyboard sounds do remind me of something or other, so I think there is a bit of 80s nostalgia that is appealing. Sounds strange, but I honestly don't know if I liked it or not.

Kept waiting for 'don't you forget about me' to come on and it never did. Didn't really matter as all the songs sounded the same and when the album finished I listened to their famous song which was a bit boring.

A bit bland, but an extra star from me purely for nostalgia

I can see how this could be someone's thing, growing up in a town suddenly they discovered this album and no-one else got it like they did. I found it hard to focus on, like trying to catch a worm, it just kept slipping away and something else would pop into my head.

I wasn't too familiar with Simple Minds, for some odd reason I keep confusing them with Tears for Fears. The album wasn't bad, I recognised the singles, rest of album didn't grab me on first listen. I did read the Wikipedia page about The Breakfast Club song, I didn't know it wasn't their song. They initially said no, kept getting asked so agreed, recorded it within half a day then forgot about it - until the movie came out and it got big radio airplay in the USA.

I have a friend who loves this album but I'd never listened to it. Now I see why she loves it. It's a super cool new wave work, with a title that deftly looks forward to the future.

I think Simple Minds peaked with Empires and Dance (1980) and Sister Feelings Call and Sons and Fascination (1981). Even Real to Real Cacophony is good (1979). New Gold Dream is where they smooth all the jagged edges, and it's a great loss.

Why "New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84)"? And why the crucifix with a sacred heart? Are Simple Minds really simple? Well, upon listening to it, one would infer that yes, it's definitely simple. Just a generic '80s synthpop that didn't age well. "Someone Somewhere (in Summertime)" is a nice mellow pop track. But the rest is just a bunch of boring pop songs. The synth riffs are interesting sometimes, but the songs themselves are not that great. In the end, "New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84)" just aged together with the other synthpop albums during that time. And no matter how interesting its name is, its sound is still indistinguishable from its peers.

Awfully dated sound. Expensive production in the 80s that sounds like factory effects for karaoke on a 90s boom box. The low end has lovely punch, but the rest is just meh.

I was not really expecting to like this, but it was better than I thought. The cover was definitely offputting. I usually don't really like 80s/new wave, but this was alright.

ambitious, full of hope and wonder, packed with sonic details specific to the time of recording.

Really did not like this. Seems like typically the type of thing I can at a minimum tolerate and usually find something to enjoy, but this was not it. It was the first version of 80's Brit Pop I have heard. It all felt like a really bad version of Sledgehammer and Phil Collins mashed up. Did not enjoy.

I've always loved this band. This is a great album.

This couldn't be more of its time if it tried. It's the musical equivalent of Molly Ringwald doing a Jane Fonda workout while wearing leg warmers and a Walkman. Very 1980s. But the 1980s was the best era for music (it just was alright), so that's just fine.

Hmm. It simmered, but it never seemed to pop for me. I love my 80s so it gets some credit there. Still - it didn’t live up to the hype.

Not my taste in music. But a decent listen

I knew, sorta, that Simple Minds was more than just the one mega hit which isn't on this album. But I had to do some reading to see just how big they were outside of the US. That said, this album is fine. It's textured and the mix of guitars and synths are good. The lyrics are probably deeper than I give it credit for on one listen, but I just don't know how much I'll want to relisten to it.

Solo conocía el grupo realmente por el nombre sin ubicar una sola canción de ellos. Los consideraba como otro grupo más del montón ochentero de new wave que atiborraron la radio con el mismo sonido en su momento y... en parte es cierto. Es new wave sin mucho más que decir, pero creo que es un new wave muy muy decente. No se si merezcan estar en la lista, no tengo idea de su importancia "histórica" o al menos no pude encontrar ninguna en especial. La música si un poquito más sobresaliente que del monto, brillante y agradable. Me gustó pero pienso hay mejores expositores del género.

Resulta que me gustó un disco de Synth Pop ochentero. No lo imaginaba, pero (en la versión normal sin tracks extra) está bastante disfrutable y se va como agua. Mucho mejor que casi todo lo de la época que hemos oído.

I’ve never listened to Simple Minds beyond the obvious hits before. Probably shouldn’t be surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Both the music and the vocal are pure 80s New Wave vibe.

What a dreary affair. I have never got Simple Minds and this doesn’t help. What is Jim Kerr singing? Who knows? His vocals are lost in the mix, in favour of synths and echo. A band in love with the sound they are making. Such future! Maybe.

A lot of people get confused by the name of this album and assume it's a compilation. This is understandable as it has so many great classic pop songs.

First listen. I like Simple Minds, but I heard nothing special here. 2/5 for now. Maybe it get's better with time.

This did not do a whole lot for me. The overall affect seemed fairly flat and none of the lyrics really stood out. I didn't dislike it but it kind of faded into the background.

Straight up 80s sound. That is not a bad thing. It's got the digital-sounding background with some funkiness to it.

7th September 2021 Listened on my phone during the day before meeting mum and fi in Victoria for supper and going to watch constellations again with Russell tovey this time. I liked this, I liked the anthemic vibe that they would go on to become more famous for.

Overall this album was solid. Classic new wave. I enjoyed it, though I can't say I would revisit every single song on this album. 4/5 stars.

Geneeristä kasarikuraa. Ei jäänyt oikein mitään käteen tästä. Kappaleet oli pitkäveteisiä, eikä hittibiisejä ollut mukana. Kovaa painia että annanko ykkösen vai kakkosen. Kääntyy ykkösen puolelle, kun ei oikein tule mieleen, että mitä tässä on edes yritetty.

Aika mones hyvin samankaltainen kasarilevy listalla. Soundi on ehkä hieman verrokkeja "tyylikkäämpi" ja jopa nykyaikaisille hipsteribändeille sopiva. Toisaalta sävellysten laatu jää jälkeen Duran Duranille ja ABC:lle. Ehkä Talk Talk on lähin referenssi listan aiemmista bändeistä. Biiseistä positiivisesti jäi mieleen erityisesti Glittering Prize, mutta suuri osa levystä oli aika mitäänsanomatonta, vaikkakin ihan miellyttävää rallattelua. Peruskolmonen, joka on kuitenkin selvästi lähempänä nelosta kuin kakkosta.

Synth-y pop 80s band. Interesting beats. Not really my type.

It's weird but I don't think that I like 80s synthpop/new wave- weird because I LOVE modern day synthpop. This album sounds like one long track vs. 9 independent tracks. It's very plodding to get through. The songs are also WAY too long.

Is this Tears for Fears again? What? It's not? I generally like 80s pop although I could do without the vocals that sound like they're echoing out of a well!

YIKES!! This was a hard album for me to get through. I am not sure why this is even on the list? I understand they were a big new wave band but it seems like the worst attempt at Bowie, Roxy Music, electronic dance etc. I can see the attraction in the UK but not sure they were as big in NA until the big hit from Breakfast Club soundtrack. I never thought I would drop to a rating of 1 for anyone but it fits here. Favorite Track: None

Ao ouvir este álbum ganhei uma nova referencia na minha vida, agora posso afirmar que ouvi o álbum mais genérico dos anos 80. Tudo aqui soa a anos 80, parece que saiu daqueles filmes com protagonistas adolescentes tão típicos dos anos 80. A sonoridade deste álbum é toda ela repleta de semelhanças entre as várias cantigas tornando assim a sua audição um bocado monótona e cansativa. Dei por mim a ouvir umas músicas a mais do álbum sem me aperceber que ele já tinha acabado de tão próximo que era a sonoridade de todas as músicas da banda. Encontro-me num leito de indiferença no que toca face a esta coletânea sonora, não posso dizer que o álbum seja mau, mas não morro de amores por ele. Tendo isto em conta destaco a primeira música, o Someone Somewhere (In Summertime), visto que não tiver tempo de me cansar do resto do álbum. A nota da indiferença é sempre um 5, sendo o resultado que levará para casa esta obra. Nota:5/10 Data: 15/01/2025

New Gold Dream really feels like a circular conversation put to music. The lyrics are nonsensical in the worst way, and the grooves never amount to anything beyond a flourish here and there. Definitely some worthwhile stuff hidden away here, but it's only worth listening to for archaeological purposes, not really for enjoyment. Fav Tracks: Promised You A Miracle

“ We heard the deacon's hopeful eulogy/ At least in dying you don't have to deal with New Wave for a second time” - The Hold Steady, “Multitude of Casualties” Hard to argue with that sentiment when an album like this comes along. This list is bloated with indistinguishable New Wave records, and this one in particular seems to revel in the genre’s worst overindulgences. Some of the instrumentation is interesting in a sort of curio way, but there was nothing here to make me want to listen again. Favourite track: “Promised You A Miracle”

Loving the new wave/synth from this album. I have of course heard some Simple Minds. But not a ton. Now it’s time to look through more of their discography.

I was surprised to see this was their 5th album!  This album was lots of fun back in the day but, for me,  it hasn't aged particularly well. I know 40 years is a long time  but other LPs  from that era, like Zenyatta Mondatta and Fear of Music, have aged far more gracefully.  I would have given it a 4 if asked on the dance floor in 1982 but not in 2021. 

A kind of catchy vibe with annoying british joy division vocals.

4 hours and 19 minutes, should have issued this on a Friday so I could find the time to listen to it all. Oh well no worries 🎧 listened to 4 and said Delete. Must mean I’m not a Simple Mind.

In listening to this for the first time in nearly 40 years my observations are 1) Jim Kerr's voice is just sooo smoooth, nothing like their first few albums, it's like he hired Mel Torme or Brian Ferry as a vocal coach 2) the band lays down beautiful textures and is happy to stay in the background and let Kerr sing 3) There are so many pop hooks and pop songs in general (!) - it's like they are shooting for that massive hit that would be heard in grocery stores and bus stations for decades to come, but that was still a year or two away. Sue says their prior album was better, which I can't disagree with, and smoe fans would have been disappointed by the less-edgy sound of this album. Before I gave it too high a mark I wanted to make sure the lyrics weren't fluff so I looked up King is White and in the Crowd - it's about the assassination of Anwar Sadat. Good enough for me.

This felt very 80's in a good relaxing way. I had the album on while I was working and breezed right through it, although, nothing really stood out to me. The album cover makes absolutely no sense to me either but at least the music was good!

This 80s style just isn't really my thing

I remember almost 40 years ago (OMG!) first listening to this album and being completely blown away by it. So much that I wrote a letter to the band gushing about how brilliant it was. That was a first (and last) for me. Back then I would have given it 5 stars instantly. Listening to it again now I find that some of the singles such as Promised you a miracle didn’t age too well and I cringe a bit at the overly pretentious lyrics and Jim Kerr’s 80s “New Romantic” singing style. However there are some real gems on this and I really like the more atmospheric and moody pieces such as Someone Somewhere, Big Sleep, Somebody up there and Hunter and the Hunted. It’s good to hear that the deep and propulsive bass and drums throughout the album still hit the spot.

A classic 80s album that you can’t really hate on.

This entire genre, what I have started calling "Inoffensive British 80s Pop" is way over-represented on this list. It's all fine. It's probably even good. But it's WAY over-represented on the 1001 albums, and it shows the original author's obvious biases. Simple Minds. More of the same. I don't mind it. May even add it to a few playlists. But, like, I couldn't hum any of these songs or tell you anything about them. They pass over me like a warm ocean wave, and are immediately forgotten.

I just can't stand those 80's synths... this, as much of the decade stuff i've been hearing just did not age well

Pleasant semi-atmospheric rock. Not life-changing, but maybe a good album to put on while working when you don't want to get distracted.

Only know this band for the one hit, but this is a very enjoyable album. I was fully prepared for some christian rock based on this cover though. Very smooth '80s new wave, or "art pop" as they seem to call it. I'd put it in the same camp as that Steve McQueen album from Prefab Sprouts. Really, really loved "Glittering Prize." Favorite tracks: Glittering Prize, Someone Somewhere, Promised You a Miracle, Somebody Up There Likes You. Album art: It's so obviously designed to look like the hymnal books at church, I really love it. I'd never even thought of the idea of interpolating that art style. I still don't think it "fits" the music necessarily, but I think this one is super cool. 4/5

I enjoy this sort of thing. Drama and all. Like the prominent bass. Perhaps it sticks out more in contrast to the synths than it would to the more common guitar centered rock sound? Elements sound balanced and clear. Reminds me of Roxy Music quite a bit. I also like when there's a single instrumental track on an album like here.

I don't like Simple Minds. It's a band that once was great and then... it's just not even ok. I see this album as the begining of their decadence.

This one was fun. I liked quite a few of the songs and added them to some playlists. While it's not a favorite album, I think it's one I will return to.

Jams all the way through, though the sound seems dated. Perhaps I'm just jaded due to my love of e.g. Kate Bush and the high average rating I've given these albums so far. Is this actually worse overall than Tommy?
