Reviews (page 7 of 13)
I knew the singles (which I like), but the rest of the album is better tbh. I'm not always gonna be in the mood for this, but when I am... I'll know where to go.
I think I've maybe listened to this from start to finish once before, but I'm definitely more familiar with the Go-Go's singles than their whole albums. They're all very talented musicians, and it's mind-blowing that they were breaking so many barriers as late as the 80's. You can really hear the punk influences, and they definitely have that Los Angeles sound to them too. Solid album.
What a coincidence! I just listened to this for the first time just an hour before this was generated to me. Absolutely in love with it. The instrumentals are melodic and punchy, a fusion of New Wave and surf rock with added jangly guitars that just produces an overall optimistic and fun sound, complimented by the pastel colored album cover. As a fan of the Beach Boys, I am obsessed with the harmonic female vocals, especially their punk forward nature. The songs are fast and catchy, with memorable hooks and standout instrumentals, between the rapid drums, space synths, and aforementioned jangly guitars. All songs are great. Wish there were more tracks like their magnum opus "We Got the Beat", and I start to lose attention in the last 3 tracks, but it's a fantastic and quick listen. I'll revisit this often.
Some bangers
A fun album, with some great songs but the hits are hits for a reason they shine much more brightly than the deep album cuts. Not that there is filler just the song quality drops off. 4 stars
Pacy and catchy pop, let’s go
Some pretty good stuff on here, which was unexpected. My only knowledge of the band are the singles, but there are solid, catchy pop tunes here from top to bottom. Loving the surf rock vibe I places.
Catchy, upbeat songs that are pretty well written. This album came out at the perfect time for an all-women group to fill a niche that didn't really exist since The Runaways (Heart, Pat Benetar, and Tina Turner notwithstanding). However, it should be noted that the primary reason these songs worked at all is because of outstanding bass lines and strong playing by the bassist.
love it! so goood only women
A fun time for all.
Surprisingly good. Appreciate that they were a huge pop sensation that wrote all their own songs. 3.5/5
fun - great girl band album
the beat does go-go dum-dum
Absolutely love this band and within it are several excellent and highly underrated performers in this group. Jane Wiedlin comes to mind, just to name one. The tunes are catchy and fun, have more depth to them than meets the eye, and I am very glad to see the album on this list. I always felt that they were overlooked because they are a female group, but I do have hope we’re getting past that silliness and truly hearing what this band did.
Great example of a killer, first record.
Lots of upbeat, cool tunes. Some old surfer vibes. Digging it.
This was a fun one. I like the all women vocals. Just too much fun. It's hard to rate. Is it a low 4 star or a high 3. I enjoyed it either way
Ya. So fun.
Fun album, but now seems gimmicky.
fun album.
Surprisingly good!
Man, I love the sound of this. I have seriously underestimated this group. Or maybe just this album. You guys ever listen to Ex Hex? Ex Hex is great, too, but owes a massive debt to the Go Go's. Anyways - Our Lips are Sealed, We Got The Beat, Fading Fast, You Can't Walk in Your Sleep. Even Skidmarks on My Heart, which is a terrible title, still works! And all of this makes me want to hear what they sounded like when they were straight punk. Anyway, enjoyed this one a lot.
Sugary pop meets some punky spikiness. The arrangements seem a little sparse even for the time - it's neither a big nor rounded sound - but the sweet vocals work well atop the wiry guitar work. 'We Got the Beat' rules.
Yeah, this is pretty great! You know it's a good sign when the song an album is most well-known for is one of your least favorites on the record. I had no clue that this band had this other moody, mid-tempo side to them. "This Town" and "Automatic" are the shit. I guess you can't judge a record by its cover? I don't know, I'm still on the fence on the cover. It's either great or terrible and I can't decide. But the music is conclusively solid.
I was ready to write this one off as some singles with fillter, but this is a solid album - it sounds more like REM than I would have ever guessed. Well crafted tunes that definitely hold up over time. The album is well-deserved in its accolades as a "cornerstone of American new wave."
The bass is in your face, the drums are fast, and the guitar lines are hooky. The vocals are distinctive. This is an album genetically engineered to get a high score from me. I like the harmony on Lust To Love. They Got The Beat is still a fun song, even if it was drilled into me from guitar hero. A great album I had fun all the way through.
Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Perfect blend of 80s girl pop and rock.
Certainly a fun album!
Our Lips are Sealed was one we had on 45 with We Got the Beat! I distinctly remember the family dancing to it. So, it was very nice to revisit this album that came out when I was 6! It is even better than I remember it. The sound has actually not only held up, but sounds incredible keeping pace with some of the hottest music. It's still edgy, tight licks, and hot chicks. The guitar on Lust to Love is especially kick@$$.
I was really, really pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this. "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got The Beat" have been beaten to death, but fortunately and shockingly they were my least favorite songs on "Beauty and the Beat." The drums and bass really drove most of the songs, in spite of the bubbly and jangly guitars, so maybe they really do have the beat. A little bit more intensity and this would be an excellent album. It's just a tad bit too bouncy and cheerful to reach its full sound potential. But I still really enjoyed it. A couple months ago I came across the term bubblegrunge, at the time being used to refer to (as it was described on r/indiehead) "indie rock bands bringing out modern takes on power pop and pop punk... that tend to mix massive pop melodies with big energy and crunchy and/or fuzzy guitars, with the attitude and angst but rarely outright depressing lyrical content that makes up a lot of the two aforementioned genres." Beach Bunny, The Beths, Charly Bliss, and PUP were used as examples. This album kind of made me think of bubblegrunge, though, and it came with a realization that The Go-Go's likely inspired a lot of bands I like more than I realized. They don't get crunchy or fuzzy enough, and get the attitude part but not much angst. But I think they are still a bit of an inspiration for evolving sounds. According to Spotify, however, bubblegrunge isn't new. "In the mid-1990s, rock critics labeled a type of music 'bubblegrunge' because it was a poppier ("bubblegum") version of grunge, which had dominated the alternative music scene in the early 1990s. Bands like Collective Soul, Bush, Third Eye Blind, and Matchbox Twenty were all part of this genre." Ok, that makes the name fit more than the new stuff I mentioned earlier, but Bush is not that poppy, and Third Eye Blind and Matchbox Twenty kind of suck. You know what, they probably don't suck. As a 90s grunge kid, I looked down on them, but their hits were actually guilty pleasures, and only guilty in some misguided attempt to be a hard rock/grunge purist. But regardless, they are very different bands than modern bubblegrunge. Oh right, The Go-Go's. Not quite bubblegrunge (and not least because it preceded grunge), but certainly instrumental in driving punk in poppier directions. A very pleasant surprise that I will definitely revisit.
Really sick one. Cool songs and vibe. Dig the surfy guitars on skidmarks
I mean, yeah it's cheesy and all and I wouldn't say it's "good" but it is fun, and I think that was the point. Just a little below 4 stars but I'll round up.
Perky punk Our Lips are Sealed and We Got the Beat are bangers Everyone in the band is just jammin hard Automatic is a cool song but feels like it's on the wrong album and slows the album down The ways the vocalists interact sound so cool
If one wanted to be reductive (and I do, because I'm feeling lazy this morning), one could say that the Go-Go's are the answer to the question "What if the Runaways were nice, wholesome girls?" The Go-Go's straddle the line between new wave and pop rock, and do it with style. "Our Lips Are Sealed" is an undeniable classic, and "We Got the Beat" is arguably the best song they ever recorded. The rest of the tracks were unfamiliar to me, but "Skidmarks on My Heart" caught my ear because of the Dick Dale/Centurians-like guitar riffs. Once again, I find myself wishing I could give half-stars, because three and a half feels right. But I've always loved Belinda Carlisle's voice, and they're a Hall of Fame band, so I'll round up to four.
Very good
Fav Tracks: Our Lips Are Sealed, How Much More, Lust To Love, Automatic, You Can't Walk In Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep), Can't Stop The World
A great 80s time capsule.
This was just a fun bunch of songs. Would recommend and listen to again.
Guess I now have to admit that I liked The Go-Go's back in the day. Had the hots for Jane Weidlin big time. The album aged reasonably well. The hits are still fun and some of the others are also OK. I didn't know that Jane co-wrote Our Lips Are Sealed w the frontman from The Specials.
Starts out with a bang with Our lips are sealed. We got the beat goes crazy too. I would call this a groovy album you can chill too even though they were going kind of hard. Also i thought the vibes sounded really consistent throughout the whole thing which just makes any album better. Good 7/10
Lots of fun. Super bouncy and driving, love the bass and surf-guitar. Think it's a little front-loaded, but not enough to not enjoy. Favorite tracks: "Our Lips Are Sealed", "This Town", "Tonite"
My first loves. I was 8 when this came out and I was enthralled by not just the their looks but the fun and memorable pop the Go-Go's were making. This was a welcome far cry from Bucks Fizz and their ilk to my young ears
Proper fun and upbeat pop album
Listening to this album reminds me of my mother. It's one of her faves, and I can totally understand why. "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat" are classics, but if I were to go for some deep cuts--- I'd take "Lust To Love" and "This Town".
Great early 80’s girl pop. Love the hits and the rest is good. 3.5 and rounding up - Some good riffs in there!
“Beauty and the Beat” is buoyant, driving and fun. It might be repetitive in places, but the Go-Go’s still seem to have struck a winning formula making it worth the listen. Most of my favourites here are the peppiest: “Our Lips are Sealed” is a killer opener with notably more keyboard than a lot of the tracks here (foregrounded for commercial appeal, fitting in with the burgeoning new wave movement?) “How Much More” has a great jangly guitar lead and keeps the momentum of the opening up to the tee. Belinda Carlisle’s vocals are one of the winning ingredients across the album: bright and committed, with just the right amount of slurred punkish sneer. There’s a bit of an explosion of revived energy and inspiration at the end of the album after things seem to have settled into their lane. “Can’t Stop the World” is a last kick of adrenaline fuelled pop-rock. Also listen for the drumming in “Skidmarks on my Heart”- there are some great fills in there. There’s also an early 60s throwback guitar solo, and a winning chorus with a full wall of harmonies (bonus points on introducing a new, unrelated chord on the line “you’ve got me in FIFTH”). I also have to shout out “Automatic” for being the black sheep in this set: it’s a refreshing change of pace which moves in a slower, darker direction. The Go-Go’s doing Joy Division their way? I wouldn’t doubt it. On first listen, some of the earlier songs appear to chug along at a similar tempo with little variation in the guitar parts or drum beats. Chord progressions are recycled and lyrics are often general and vague. “Tonite”, “Lust for Love” and “This Town” all run into each other a bit, and don’t match up to the material on either side. Many punk and new-wave bands of the time, of course, made careers out of using one song in many different ways to fill out their albums. That the Go-Go’s did this as a then-rare all-female band (the first to top the Billboard 200 Album Chart) gives weight to their legacy and enduring appeal. They challenged the musical landscape and came out on top.
3.5
Wait a minute, WHAT? Are you saying that "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed", two S-tier tracks, are on the same album? That's some amazing shit right there. Though not every track hits hard, the whole thing is enjoyable. Great music for doing anything with purpose, even if it's just washing the dishes. Powerful, brash vocals. You go (go), girls!
Just a really fun pop album with great songs and catchy lyrics!
These songs are catchy, fun and some of them really rock! While "Our lips are sealed' is a gentle introduction, "How Much More", "Tonite" and "Can't Stop the World" all kick ass. I cant help but feel like Green Day must have been partially inspired by this melodic punk-rock and don't see how Dookie could happen without this album. It defintiely sounds like a product of the 80's and is not exceptionally deep, but I thought it was an enjoyable listen overall.
Catchy, enthusiastic, iconic for that time. Listening makes me feel like I'm experiencing a day in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Rollicking good fun. Faves: Our Lips Are Sealed, Lust to Love, You Can't Walk In Your Sleep
This album surprised me. The Go-Go's were never really a thing here in the UK until they all went solo. Consequently I've just had the chance to listen to brand new (to me) prime 80s pop gold. I really enjoyed the whole vibe. There are some great songs to be found here (though Our Lips... will always be Terry Hall's). I sort of feel like I found a rogue present that got lost under the Christmas tree 40 years ago.
4,5
"Beauty and the Beat" is a historical new wave record, not only because it's celebrated as so, but also because of its importance as the debut of one of the most important and celebrated all female bands of all time. It has a raw fun feeling throughout, adding some pop and punk elements to match Belinda Carlisle high pitched voice with some effective instrumentation. "Our Lips Are Sealed", "This Town" and "We Got the Beat" are songs that shows the power of a band destined to influence a generation to come.
I had only really listened to We Got the Beat. The rest of the album was surprisingly solid. Feels like there were some punk rock influences underneath an otherwise bright sound.
Loved it, very female empowerment. Does feel a little repetitive for an entire album.
Belinda Carlisle and Jane Wiedlin? What is this, some kind of super group? Odd that I’ve not listened to them before. All pretty cool and I’d like to slip it a 5 but nothing that stands out as a massive tune.
Fun and bubbly throughout. There are a lot more telltale signs of their time in the LA punk scene than I recalled. The little semi-tone line ends remind you where they came from before they added that poppier sheen that Jane Weidlin brought in.
Wasn’t expecting much but I just love this kind of raw direct music. Nice one
Great album. The hits are two of the very best of the era. However this is NOT an album of filler after the hits are done, in that way it reminds me of The Romantics debut album, both are choc full of fabulous songs from beginning to end. We got the Beat got this 60 year old ass off of his chair dancing around the room like no one was watching. Thankfully no one was except for my dog. 4 🌟
Love it! They got the beat!
I came to know The Go-Go's a few years ago when they reunited and opened some shows for the B-52s and was surprised to find out that they were the first band in which Belinda Carlisle, whom I already knew, was. Although it's impossible to compare their talent, because they are really talented, with the sheer originality of that other Athens band, I can see where the choice comes from. The Go-Go's are an all-girl band from Los Angeles that incorporates the tradition of girl groups into their own blend of punk-new wave. Beauty And The Beat was their debut album. During the years, I heard several versions of the first song, Our Lips Are Sealed, co-written with The Specials) and I still don't know which one is my favourite, as it really is an awesome song. Almost title track, We Got The Beat, is a 50s spy movie soundtrack vs Ramones mashup that works wonders. Skidmarks On My Heart has that space/surf guitar that's always fitting. A little bit of jingle-jangle on How Much More. This Town has that twangy guitar thing over a thrashing riff and lyrics that portray the decadence in LA at the time, really powerful. Fading Fast somehow foreshadows Belinda's solo career. Automatic has a stomp that really sounds automatic. Beauty And The Beat is probably not a 10/10 for me, but it had an impact at the moment it was released and so many pop elements to enjoy that it is still a vital listening. I will surely come back to this album in the next few days.
pretty good high energy pop stuff
love the drums, harmony. definitely captures a certain moment in time. live cuts on the deluxe version show they are definitely punk.
Really nice and fun sounds
Banda bem legal, uma mistura de pop e rock bem interessante.
Listened to on 2/22/22 4.5/5 Favorite songs: our lips are sealed, can’t stop the world, you can’t walk in your sleep If I had a getting read my montage in the 80s, I would absolutely want it to be set to this album. It’s so fun and upbeat and perfect to sing into a brush while teasing your hair
Very fun pop album with some classics (We Got The Beat). Would listen again.
2/23/22 Wish I had this album on a Friday! Such a fun and upbeat listen with two songs I already knew which is always fun! A little too 80s for my daily music taste, but definitely enjoyed it Favorite Song: We Got the Beat
This is a shockingly good album. Some great pop bops (We Got the Beat), but some great darker tunes (Automatic). I feel like with a little modern production this could be an all time album?
Really fun album to listen to! New wave/pop from the 80's with a lot of quality. Was very surprised. Favorite tracks: * Can't Stop The World * Our Lips Are Sealed * You Can't Walk In Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep)
Never gave these lyrics a close listen before. There's more than meets the eye here. Quality rock songs paired with clever lyrics. Great bass playing too. Favorite tracks: You Can't Walk in Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep), This Town, Our Lips Are Sealed
The album title is fantastic. The music: feel-good-rock with a west coast vibe. It succeeds in that respect and is gernerally a very easy listen. The mood and tempo is very similar in most of these songs. Still, it's a worthwhile listen. Highlights: Lust to Love and Fading Fast. 4/5
Yeah they were pretty good. I like the opener.
Очень понравился женский рок-ен-ролл. Погружает в атмосферу 80х
This album has aged vwry well. Young, raw energy is still fresh and makes me feel happy and optimistic.
Strong Blondie-vibes!
Fun one.
Classic new wave pop.
Really enjoyed nice and upbeat
Very enjoyed this one
cool tunes 4/5
i was impressed, i feel generous, 4 for you!
You know me
CUTE AND FUN BOPS. Look, after a year of mopey boring british new wave, and stomach churning thrash metal, it's really great to hear an album that is nice and fun and cute.
Thought this was excellent throughout. Very uplifting.
-”We Got The Beat” is pretty darn catchy -”Automatic is pretty cool as well, the start-stop bits are notable and the main riff is very psychadelicy. -The alternating bass drum/lyrics and guitar riff bit in the chorus is very nice in “Skidmarks On My Heart.” Also some great drum fills in there. -Overall solid album, not mind-blowing, but very pleasant. The songs have enough energy and enough going on to keep it interesting.
This album is just fun. Don't know how anyone wouldn't like it.
this slaps, especially for the 80s
Like a poppier, bouncier X?
Still a real gem and a new wave/pop icon. Maybe a little lightweight to quite attain masterpiece status for me but a strong 4
Digging it. Good vibe, good beats, good pacing. Really solid and would definitely listen to it again.
Well this album was quite the bop - quite the toe tapper Noteworthy track: Lust To Love
Sorprendentemente hueno, guardado. P: 8 T: 4 G: 8
4 odlicno, zabavno
Great pop rock album, so far I've loved the whole tracklist. Great drummer, catchy tunes.
Engaging and fun music, liked this
Fun, energetic and musically detailed beneath the poppy surface. I wish I would've listened to this before
fun! lorelai!
Good
Great album. Very new wave/ punk sounding. Great songs.
We Got the Beat is the least interesting song on this album. I didn't expect it to be so packed with legit tunes. Best track: Our Lips Are Sealed
Great Album - love the Go Go's.
we got the beat
4/5 well that was a surprise! good album! Amazing title pun as well!
Aside from Our Lips Are Sealed and We Got The Beat, I don't think I'm too familiar with the Go-Go's. What a shame, because this album was fun and full of sunshine - with the occasional moment that made my heart ache for some reason. Very very nice.
Vacation still their best song
surprisingly modern, ditzy and clean 🧼
a good pop album
Good poppy rock, they have their sound locked in pretty well. Everyone should be familiar with the singles from this album, overall a good album I probably wouldn't have heard otherwise.
Beauty and the Beat by The Go-Go's is a beautiful album with many songs that would make you dance at any time. However, until track six they seem to be a bit monotonous and if you don't pay attention you might say you're listening to the same song. But its slower tracks are the ones that stand out above the rest and being that it came out 40 years ago, it's a valuable gem in our music.
This album was a whole lot better than I'd thought it'd be, very groovy and 80's. 9/10.
I feel like more of these songs should be classics. They're catchy, well-written and work well at high volume. The production sound is kinda shrill though. Popularity of the songs on Spotify *fades fast* after We Got The Beat, which is a pity because the songs there are also really good! Top 3 for me are Fading Fast, This Town, Skidmarks On My Heart, with close runners-up We Got The Beat and Automatic. The singer sounds like the guy from Japan, but a tad less like she's suffering.
I listened to this album a couple of times and while I did enjoy it, there wasn’t anything in particular that stood out to me except Automatic and Skidmarks on My Heart.
New Wave all the way. Nice riffs, harmonies, bass lines, vocals by Belinda, girl power in the 80s ... plus I had quite the 11-year-old crush on one of the guitarists. 3.85 stars
Kind of punky, didn't love the singers voices but there were some songs I.e. Tonight and Fading fast that I really liked
Great punk rock
Love it. Sounds like summer. Super good vibes.
Very consistent sound with the same style of guitar and drum throughout, the hits are obvious (our lips are sealed and we got the beat). Title is aptly named. Lots of fun drum fills. Second half feels more interesting than first. Hidden gem: you can't walk in your sleep (if you can't sleep) 4/5, pretty fyre
Many interesting motives, rhythms and melodies that influenced modern generation punk and indie rock
Really good.
Really enjoyed this, 80’s cheese but in a good way. Proper euphoric pop and a great opening track.
Blending surf-rock with pop in a catchy package this album has multiple major singles and paved the way for future efforts.
Enjoyed it!
Definitely fun to listen to! It was like a cross between the cool pop girl bands from the 60's and crossed it with punk/new wave. The harmonies are fantastic, the songs are well crafted and the hooks are everywhere. Great upbeat listen. Still love Our Lips ar Sealed.
surprisingly nostalgic for me even though I didn't know that the songs I knew were by the go go s.
A great mix of late 70s punk and early 80s pop, kind of bridging the gap between bands like the Buzzcocks and mainstream radio. A perfect summer listen. Fav Tracks: Our Lips Are Sealed, Skidmarks On My Heart, Lust to Love.
This was a super fun album. Great early pop-punk songs and really well produced. This record casts an unacknowledged and long shadow on guitar pop bands to follow. 3.5/5 Favourite track: "Skidmarks on My Heart"
catchy stuff. didn't expect to listen to the entire thing in one go at 730am. also didn't expect i'd start cleaning during it. feeling energized
Nice, saw them in concert in2018
- feels like classic 80's - female beach boys - soundrack for a teenage movie where the outcast listens to this - very fun, DRUMS
"How much more" was my favorite non-hit track. I also liked "You Can't Walk in Your Sleep" and "Can't Stop the World"
Our Lips Are Sealed is amazing. The rest was listenable!
They really do have the beat.
Loved it bb
Tiene muy buenas canciones, su problema siempre ha sido que lo sacaron con una producción muy popera, les falta la fuerza que tenían en directo.
Bright, breezy, catchy..... like a prototype Kenickie without the snot nosed attitude. Enjoyed it immensely
Really liked this. It grabbed me in the first 15 seconds and didn't let go. Every track is catchy, melodic and fun. Apparently it is 'new-wave'. I'm not entirely sure what that means, but I would describe this as danceable, exuberant pop music played on guitars, with a bit of a punk edge. If this is what new-wave is, then I like new-wave. 4.5/5.
Upbeat!
Upbeat and sometimes hypnotic. Great to listen to when you're cleaning up around the house.
Quality
Fine a bit thin. A couple of the tracks are filled but a couple are real bangers.
Very pleasantly surprised. Really expected cheesy 80s pop and, while there we’re definitely strong elements of that (especially in the vocals), it some really solid tracks. Favorite tracks: “Lust To Love,” “This Town,” and “Automatic”
Our Lips Are Sealed is surprisingly solid lyrically for a pop song. I liked the album more than I thought I would and only knew their two hits prior to listening.
It was a fun album, the hits were definitely the highlight though
I actually really enjoyed this one.
Fun! Very poppy, very upbeat - I didn't know this group was Belinda Carlisle's origin story! Fave track - "Automatic", maybe? "You Can't Walk In Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep)" is fun too...
4
Okay, I'm ready. This is pretty easy to listen to... Lips ages really well... we got the beat, not as much. Some pretty strong songs mixed in, make this enjoyable.
Had a great time listening to this one.
Very groovy. Liked a lot. Made me smile
it was such a bop. perfect new wave album with female leads. underrated honestly. last part dragged a bit as they all began to mesh together, but overall quality album.
love my 80s jams, and this album has a bunch - C
Liked them when I was a kid, but really never listened to this full album. Really good.
Great fun, reminded me of a pop version of Hole. I had no idea Jane Wiedlin and Belinda Carlisle were in a band together. Will be listening again.
Another rock entry with female vocalists and I am here for it. The simple harmonies they employ with multiple vocals is great. The sound is slick without being overproduced. Great album through and through.
Great, catchy, emotion-filled 80s pop.
A classic for sure, and pleased with the results overall on how it affected women in rock music.
Very fun.
I liked it
Classssssic
Such a fun album
Really catchy songwriting and punchy arrangements. The first 'pop punk' album?
This album was pretty fun. I don't know if it's the most important album of the 1980s to listen to - you can listen to the hits and have a good sense of this album - but it was a solid listen nonetheless. All the songs were pretty fun, nothing surprising, and nothing I'd cut. I will leave these comments, but also add that I read the Wikipedia entry for this album: this helped define the new-wave genre and demonstrated that punk and pop can go together (though i like this a lot more than the pop-punk of my youth ::shudder::). So historically, an important album. As someone who was born after this album came out, I just accepted the Go-gos as a "band of the 80s" rather than a band who helped shape what we think of as the music of the 80s. So that's cool!
Second time for this one. Have to say I am impressed with the often menacing melodies embedded in the otherwise uber bubblegum poppiness of it all. I can see why they had their moment. But honestly, I think they’re better left in the crate. Someone could take some great samples from these songs. But listening to them all as a “work?” - Meh 3 Boolean: False
Reminds me of diners with jukeboxes even though it’s from the 80s
a bit too pop like for me, but will be great for like a retro girls night or smth
fun but pretty repetitive
It is a pretty solid album with a an overall good consistency in the songs and it has an enjoyable vibe and for some had some nostalgic tones. I enjoyed it more than i expected to be fair it was a pleasant suprise.
day 2 i enjoyed the vibrancy of this album, which served as nice background noise while i went about my evening routine. not a bad listen, though its beginning (specifically, the first two songs) is a comparative weak point to the rest of the track list. ♡: "lust to love"
Cool band with a recognisable hit on this album. My wife was singing along. Not sure I'd listen to more of them.
Better than I thought it was going to be
Solid album, nothing really blows me away. 6.5/10. Sounds like a stereotypical 80s album
Fun!
Meh
It was an okay pop album. Belinda Carlisle’s voice is a little bit tedious after a few songs.
I like it a lot, but there's not that many stand out songs. I really like "We got the beat" and "Fading Fast". Automatic ia pretty cool and seems to be underrated when looking at the stream numbers. There's just no wow factor of the album, its all a bit mid
Pretty fun pop-rock sound. Listened to it twice through and it does start to get a bit grating after the second listen but it's catchy in parts and full of positive energy.
Solid 3 stars, enjoyable.
Nothing revelatory but enjoyable 80s pop, Lust to Love best song
I knew the songs on this album that everybody knows, but this is the first time I’ve ever listened to an entire album by the Go-Go’s. I thought it was fine. Inoffensive. Honestly, at times I forgot it was playing.
Exactly what you expect from a new wave album. Light and fun, but still inspired by that punk rock energy.
Very 80s
never rly thought im gonna like it but pretty good, joyful, happy
Pretty cool album, very powerful and unique sound. We Got The Beat and Fading Fast were my favorites. 6.1/10
Very good bubblegum pop. I may bring it out again at parties or road trips, but it didn't change my life. 6/10
Not particularly interesting but fun enough. RYM: N Saved a song: N
That was quite fun and catchy
I liked this album a lot more than I thought I would. I really appreciated "You Can't Walk in Your Sleep" and "Can't Stop the World" which were new songs to me.
3.5/5 new wave girl group got the beat
Wajbujemy w spa. Tańczę w saunie
No niby buja
Miło buja, ale po jakimś czasie robi się monotonne. Można posłuchać, ale do sprzątania weszłoby lepiej niż do klikania w komputer.
Fajny basik, fajne chórki, ciekawy blend surf rocka z brzmieniem lat 80. Ostatecznie trochę zbyt powtarzalny
Kinda fun
Nice Definitely my sort of thing. Nice pop songs in the 80s college radio style I really like. Will listen to again at some point. Favourite track: our lips are sealed
A fun garage/jangle/kinda surfy rock album. 3.5/5.
Surprisingly enjoyable
Can’t shake the feeling as we go through this list that new wave was a tragic mistake. Very catchy, but something about the sound is starting to grate on me For some reason can’t hear the Belinda Carlisle who sang Heaven Is A Place On Earth here
Too sweet for me bar Fading Fast
A decent album by an all female punk rock band. However it doesn't provide as much of a kick as other bands like blondie or the pretenders do.
A nice little slice of jangly, poppy new wave that was much better than I was envisaging when it came up. The layered female vocals pop up quite a lot more recently so I imagine they all reference this.
More creative of a band than I ever gave them credit for being. So much more than We Got The Beat and Our Lips are Sealed. Automatic is my jam!
Fun, iconic. Some bangers that will get stuck in your head.
Classic ‘80s new-wave with a classic sound.
Some real hits on this one.
Wel leuk
yes, good, idk
i like this 80s pop 3/5
We got the beat is the best song on here by far. I didn't dislike it, but it was so samey, and flip flopped between their punk roots and the poppy stuff kind of a lot. It was fine though.
Our lips are sealed - 4 How much more - 3 Tonite - 3 Lust to love - 3 This town - 4 We got the beat - 4 Fading fast - 3 Automatic - 3 You can't walk in your sleep (if you can't sleep) - 3 Skidmarks on my heart - 3 Can't stop the world - 3
Tää oli ihan letkeää ja pirteää poppia. Mikään biisi ei noussut yli muiden.
Fun 3/5
I love that a record as scrappy and fun as this was the second best selling album of 1982. But a good deal of it belongs firmly in 1982.
This was an easy listen. I won't come back to it but I had no trouble getting through it and even gave it a second listen. Didn't dramatically change any feelings I have about the Go Go's, or this flavor of harmless (almost to a fault) new wave/pop.
Cool Jangle album. Jeg nød den gode energi, men albummet føles en smule frontloaded. Har ikke så meget mere at sige til albummet. Det var bare godt at høre, men ikke noget banebrydende. Vidste ikke at Belinda Carlisle havde været i et band. Standouts: Our Lips Are Sealed, How Much More, Lust To Love, This Town
Enjoyed this - good, breezy album that was new to me. I was slow to realise that it was Belinda Carlisle on lead vocals!
Not bad. Upbeat fun. Bit samey. Generous 3
Meh standard pop music. Was alright Sounds like something I’d hear on vice city driving around
GIRL POWER! Update: wOooOOOOWWW! I was pleasantly surprised. I legit saved like four songs from this album!
As I was listening to this I was thinking about how the go-go's are so firmly in their lane. Are they just in the lane or did the create the lane?
Sommerlett og poppete jenterock. Ikke det verste i verden, men mangler en skikkelig x-faktor. We Got The Beat er god.
Kind of fun and poppy and I guess they are quite unimportant group, positive fun energy and attitude but not too many killer tunes.
Overall, this album does stand the test of time! Belinda Carlisle's vocals are raw, powerful, and uncontrolled but not in the bad way. I had a low level of anxiety while listening because I kept wondering, "Is her voice going to give out?" but, it added to the listening experience as it kept me intrigued and focused. The melodies are very catchy, the band was phenomenal, and supported Belinda exceedingly well. Now for the negatives: lyrically, the album is very surface level and when it tried to delve deeper, it was very trite and predictable, especially on "skid marks on my heart". One major issue I had while listening was the individuality of the songs or rather the lack of it. Every song was very sonically and generically similar, always living in this pop-rock world, steady drums, strumming electric guitar, talk-singing, growing pre-chorus that explodes into a catchy chorus. Don't get me wrong, it sounds good but I would've loved to see a wider range of sounds explored on this album especially considering how well this band could sound with a little more creativity. A track shout-out for me is "Automatic", its very different from the rest of the album, its a lot quieter and inward than the rest of the album. The guitar strumming is haunting and the pause at the end of the chorus is perfection!
This is cute 80’s pop
Nisam imala pojma da je neko snimio Our Lips Are Sealed prije Fun Boy 3! Ovo je album koji ima dosta zanimljivih elemenata, nimalo kao prosječni new-wave album, ali na njihovu žalost ja više volim prosječni new-wave. Belindin glas mi ne štima, osim u Circle in the Sand konkretno. Nisam ni znala da je ona negdje bila prije toga. Svašta danas saznajem.
7.5 / 10
Classic 80s sound
Fun girl-pop with some memorable hits. I prefer a band like the B-52's though, as they have a similar sound but the Go-Go's just lack a bit of the edge that makes the 52's so interesting.
gillade!!!
Nice pop.
Overall fun listen! Maybe more like a 3.5 but we don’t have half ratings
Nothing too crazy, just a good album to rock out to. Skidmarks On My Heart is an excellent song title. Solid! Standouts: Our Lips Are Sealed • This Town • Skidmarks On My Heart
The drumming on this album is absolutely nuts. Instant classic that unfortunately not a lot of people are aware of outside of We Got the Beat, which imo is the worst song on here.
Too 80s pop for me
A couple really high highs among a sea of meh
super torn on this one. It’s kind of amateurish, with a lot of early days metaphor songs, weak rhymes, simple structures. I kind of want to give this a two like I would any other album that isn’t *bad* but needs more work or more polish. It’s also pretty catchy. The drums and bass are a lot of fun and there are some specific vocal flourishes that make me want to rate this a (low) four. It’s still more of a stepping stone to similar bands I like better but there are specific things about it I love. so it’s probably getting a three? But there are good arguments in either direction and a three feels like giving up.
One of the better New Wave records I listened so far. Fav tracks: Fading Fast, Our Lips Are Sealed & You Can't Walk in Your Sleep
really fun!
Нихуя Белинда где начинала, не знал
80’s Rock ⭐️Our Lips Are Sealed
Got some bangers.
positive energetic album, very 80s teen movie vibes
Good
It's catchy, but I don't really see myself coming back to it much.
Fun, exuberant, little punk, little pop, cool record.
Very fun. I love how the band on this one doesn't take themselves seriously and are focused simply on having fun, it works well with the poppier side of new wave and punk that this album is drenched in. Probably favourite element of the album is the backing/harmony vocals are very well, not often for me the backing/harmony vocals are best element (I believe they're done specifically the best in the songs "Lust to Love" and This Town.") Highlight Song/s: "Lust to Love"
It's aight but not particularly exciting
ovo mi nije uopće loše bilo, premda malo generično. kvalitetom jako dosljedno, sve su pjesme onako dobre. na trenutke mi dođe kao neka veselija inačice suzi i benšiza, možda podsjeća i na throwing muses. budući da sam kasnije, ohoho sati nakon što sam ga inicijalno preslušao, odlučio još malo slušat, dajem četvorku. valjda ću još slušat EDIT: kasnija slušanja narušila su mi dojam, ovo je čista trojka
Well first things first, they lose a point for the apostrophe. This was ok
cute! on the first listen the record felt quite flat but got more fun on the second [NEVER LISTENED BEFORE]
Girls singing pink
It's fine. Will revisit.
Favorite track(s): How Much More, Lust to Love
Really fun album, even if it's a bit bland. The energy is great and the songs are catchy. It's a good dose of power pop. Not to mention it's an all-girl album in an era where that was rare (and it unfortunately still is). Add in that this was the band's debut and it becomes even more impressive. Putting all those details together makes it a clear candidate for this list. Even so, I didn't really love it. It felt a little lacking in depth and substance, instead relying on its hooks to keep you engaged. As a result, there were a lot of songs on here that didn't really do a lot for me even though I liked them well enough. I enjoyed the listen without really thinking it was something much better than good. Overall: 2.9/5
Bitta fun but also a bit annoying
This is fun. Unchallenging fun.
Sleater Kinney in the 80s? OK, no, but this is closer than you might expect. If I had to guess when this was released, I'd guess the 90s before I guessed 1981. I suppose there's a through-line from the Ramones to this, as both are punchy and a bit fierce while also kind of being pop music at their heart. But this feels much closer to what punk music turned into. "Tonite" has a riff that's reminiscent of melodic hardcore; if you sped it up it would sound like a Bad Religion song. While it feels very ahead of its time, I do think it either needed more variety or bigger hooks to really succeed. The songs all short and fast verse-chorus-verse songs with no surprises. The group vocals are a nice touch, but the lyrics are nothing special. A really interesting album chronologically, but it doesn't quite come together for me.
Just fun, very eighties. Not mine.
The album cover is just gorgeous
As is typical of this era of New Wave, it's just a bit too tinny and sparse. Solid tunes on there though
Kinda fun, upbeat and catchy. Songs sound similar. Girl band!
Quite Blondie-esque, with a bit of Surfersound and a bit more punk-y.
*1981. *Starts off really strong with "Our Lips are Sealed." *We Got The Beat is the only other song I know. *This is fine in small doses, but it's just a lot of the same thing - very poppy girl group. *Fading Fast and Skidmarks on My Heart are some of the few exceptions - they had a little bit of grit to them, in a good way. RATING - 6/10
classic jr high record. more nostalgic for me than necessary - not an album I've carried with me over the years.
Brit pop girls
The Go-Go’s are a great pop 80s band, and the record has lots of energy. Not an album I’ll go back to often, but was enjoyable to start my day.
And a half. Enjoyed.
Enjoyed this. catchy and fun
Not what I was expecting. But good. Wouldn’t call it “punk”. High 3.
1981 - fronted by Belinda Carlisle, evolving to new wave pop by way of the punk scene. All-female band the Go-Go’s dropped this solid new wave punk freshman record with songs like Tonite among their more well known song along singles
Saw them in a small club in San Pedro ( I think) and was unimpressed. Except for being women, there was nothing that made them stand out musically from their peers. Typical peppy pop from that time and place.
its fine, idk i just dont rly like new wave music tbh
This is good pop. I like good pop, probably more than most. But it's not a great album. I'm going to be a little generous in my rating because it was really refreshing to hear a girl group on fine form in amongst all the male driven serious stuff we get on this app.
A fine collection of New Wave, pop-rock tracks with a distinctly ’80s flair. There are a couple of standout tracks, presumably the singles, but nothing truly spectacular.
Uhhhh unimpressive ??
very fun and sing along esk, nice drums and guitar is pretty groovy too, vocals are inherently high but not over ther top, pretty good listen :)
leuk!!ze kunnen goed zingen maar niet per se mijn stijl
Catchy, i like. Never heard before this but it was better than expected. Not really life changing or anything very special but I liked it and would definitely listen again. Would give this like 3,5/5.
Not my jam
Pretty fun album, can definitely see the punk origins even if I wouldn't consider it punk.
I've never heard of these before, or any of their hits. I don't think they were anywhere near as big in the UK as in the US. There's some nice songs in here, but it's all very light and fluffy and forgettable though. It starts to feel quite samey by the end of it and I did find myself getting a bit bored, which isn't great at just 35 minutes. It's not wowing me, but it's also pretty accessible and easy listening. A thoroughly 3/5 album.
Fun, light, pop album.
Candy pop. So fun. There are times when this music is appropriate and fun but couldn't listen to it often. Clever pop compositions, lyrics and fun vocals.
Definitely outside my comfort zone. Vocals weren’t my fav ever but it was solid rock/pop. I liked “Lust to Love” and “This Town”
This was a pleasant surprise! I never would have listened to this album and while it feels a bit monochrome, it's much better than I expected. How Much More, You Can't Walk In Your Sleep, and Skidmarks On My Heart are quite catchy, but the stand out for me was Tonite. It's a bit more raw feeling than the other tracks, and that chorus! I can see myself coming back to this track.
A fun listen with two massive hits: We Got The Beat, and Our Lips Are Sealed. Automatic is a track that surprised me with its more dramatic theme and associated rhythmic change. Top tracks: We Got The Beat, Our Lips Are Sealed, Automatic
Pretty good
Fun and upbeat album, some decent songs but nothing that sticks out and makes me want to repeat listen straight away
Just ok
i wanted to like it a lot more than i did but was just very unremarkable to me
Some classic hits and a few other good tracks.
Some great pop songs on here. Love the arrangements. Drums sound great. I feel like this is what I wanted from that Blondie album. Solid 3.5
oh i'm sure everyone's (except me scout and marlon) gonna give this a 2. godforbid the pop songs fucking Pop. could use some variety though. 80s fleetwood gets away with it because they have 3 vocalists (among other reasons). 3.4-4.2. this album probably would've meant a lot to me as a post studio 54 pre basquiat nyc young hoe™️.
Pretty funky, optimistic, and easy listening. But too shallow to be a real contender
