I like it. Tracks like tonite, fading fast, lust to love, the town got me tapping toes and bopping my head. I love the pause in automatic. This album has a lotta drums i like it. I would rate it a 6. Love the vibes. Present karens would be bopping their heads to this. Ig it's prime white girl music. Fading fast had a sad tone to it which I liked. Overall a good album no complaints

Gotta be in contention for the most feminine album we’ve had so far This is a pretty fun one. Hadn’t really heard of them (though I’ve heard Heaven is a Place on Earth a million times and that’s the lead singer), but I think that very obvious feminine spin on what was previously an extremely male dominated industry is pretty cool. We Got the Beat is probably my pick on this one, just a catchy song. Vocals and instruments are more than passable I’m starting to realize I’m not super crazy about the 80s pop sound. There’s something that feels really shallow and unexciting if you didn’t grow up in that era. Nothing that this band does particularly wrong, but just more of a symptom of the years This is apparently the only album ever that reached #1 while being written and played by an all female band, so thats a pretty cool piece of history. Nothing personal about the album, but the genre is kinda tough for me to really enjoy

1 album wonders. Pretty solid girl-rock/pop. Problem is the "We got the beat" earworm i've dealt with since I listened to it last week.

Pleasantly surprised by this album! I only knew their hits, which are a bit too pop for my liking, but a lot of this album rocks!

A pretty good album, i liked Tonite and We Got The Beat the most.

Listened to this while on a short lil digestion walk and was actually pleasantly surprised with the quality of work on this album. It has a really nice vibe to it and the early 80's vibe is quite prevalent throughout the whole project. Although it may not be a technical masterpiece or a boundary-pushing album for it's time I still found it to be rather enjoyable. 68/100.

Su sonido no es destructivo como las bandas posteriores de la misma naturaleza lo fueron, pero sí existe esa energía que busca romper el molde. Es un buen álbum, ligero de escucha, como para dejarlo puesto mientras realizas actividades intelectuales o físicas intensas.

Okay, the elephant in the room... that unnecessary apostrophe. Makes me livid 🤬 Other than that, this is a decent album full of "bops", as young people seem to say. Not entirely sure what a "bop" is, but I think the word probably applies here. I believe the Go-Gos were big in America, but barely registered in the UK despite a big money push from their record company. We were all dressed in grey raincoats listening to Echo and the Bunnymen and Joy Division and reading Dostoyevsky at that point in time, so simple boppy tunes didn't break through our collective consciousness. Sounds good now though.

straight up forgot to rate this album and I just realised it. Omg its just more fucking 80's new wave. The singing is annoying and all the song spunds the same. Its just another 80's new wave album idk. Its very very close to a 2.

I didn't know what to expect here. Perhaps the proper way to word my previous sentence was that I had the wrong expectations going in. I expected a shallow-sounding pop but I was more than happy to find instrumental depth that mixes genres tastefully. The delivery is also pretty good and the runtime is practically perfect. Most of all, the album is consistent. Some songs do sound familiar and the lyrics are mostly one-dimensional but they serve the purpose of the record. I even found out that my two favorite songs aren't even the most famous ones. I liked "Tonite" and "Fading Fast".

This album was pretty fun. I don't know if it's the most important album of the 1980s to listen to - you can listen to the hits and have a good sense of this album - but it was a solid listen nonetheless. All the songs were pretty fun, nothing surprising, and nothing I'd cut. I will leave these comments, but also add that I read the Wikipedia entry for this album: this helped define the new-wave genre and demonstrated that punk and pop can go together (though i like this a lot more than the pop-punk of my youth ::shudder::). So historically, an important album. As someone who was born after this album came out, I just accepted the Go-gos as a "band of the 80s" rather than a band who helped shape what we think of as the music of the 80s. So that's cool!

I want to have a word with whoever thought "Skidmarks on my Heart" would be a good song title Fave track: Our Lips are Sealed

Second time for this one. Have to say I am impressed with the often menacing melodies embedded in the otherwise uber bubblegum poppiness of it all. I can see why they had their moment. But honestly, I think they’re better left in the crate. Someone could take some great samples from these songs. But listening to them all as a “work?” - Meh 3 Boolean: False

It is a pretty solid album with a an overall good consistency in the songs and it has an enjoyable vibe and for some had some nostalgic tones. I enjoyed it more than i expected to be fair it was a pleasant suprise.

day 2 i enjoyed the vibrancy of this album, which served as nice background noise while i went about my evening routine. not a bad listen, though its beginning (specifically, the first two songs) is a comparative weak point to the rest of the track list. ♡: "lust to love"

Pretty fun pop-rock sound. Listened to it twice through and it does start to get a bit grating after the second listen but it's catchy in parts and full of positive energy.

Nothing revelatory but enjoyable 80s pop, Lust to Love best song

I knew the songs on this album that everybody knows, but this is the first time I’ve ever listened to an entire album by the Go-Go’s. I thought it was fine. Inoffensive. Honestly, at times I forgot it was playing.

Exactly what you expect from a new wave album. Light and fun, but still inspired by that punk rock energy.

Btw, I didn't know Carlisle was in a band before her solo career. Now I can't unhear it. Overall I got the impression that the singles got waaaay more care than the rest of the record. I don't know, the record isn't bad, but it was a bit of a bore. Didn't like it all that much.

A decent album by an all female punk rock band. However it doesn't provide as much of a kick as other bands like blondie or the pretenders do.

A nice little slice of jangly, poppy new wave that was much better than I was envisaging when it came up. The layered female vocals pop up quite a lot more recently so I imagine they all reference this.

More creative of a band than I ever gave them credit for being. So much more than We Got The Beat and Our Lips are Sealed. Automatic is my jam!

Fun, iconic. Some bangers that will get stuck in your head.

We got the beat is the best song on here by far. I didn't dislike it, but it was so samey, and flip flopped between their punk roots and the poppy stuff kind of a lot. It was fine though.

This is totally acceptable music.

I love that a record as scrappy and fun as this was the second best selling album of 1982. But a good deal of it belongs firmly in 1982.

This was an easy listen. I won't come back to it but I had no trouble getting through it and even gave it a second listen. Didn't dramatically change any feelings I have about the Go Go's, or this flavor of harmless (almost to a fault) new wave/pop.

As I was listening to this I was thinking about how the go-go's are so firmly in their lane. Are they just in the lane or did the create the lane?

Kind of fun and poppy and I guess they are quite unimportant group, positive fun energy and attitude but not too many killer tunes.

Overall, this album does stand the test of time! Belinda Carlisle's vocals are raw, powerful, and uncontrolled but not in the bad way. I had a low level of anxiety while listening because I kept wondering, "Is her voice going to give out?" but, it added to the listening experience as it kept me intrigued and focused. The melodies are very catchy, the band was phenomenal, and supported Belinda exceedingly well. Now for the negatives: lyrically, the album is very surface level and when it tried to delve deeper, it was very trite and predictable, especially on "skid marks on my heart". One major issue I had while listening was the individuality of the songs or rather the lack of it. Every song was very sonically and generically similar, always living in this pop-rock world, steady drums, strumming electric guitar, talk-singing, growing pre-chorus that explodes into a catchy chorus. Don't get me wrong, it sounds good but I would've loved to see a wider range of sounds explored on this album especially considering how well this band could sound with a little more creativity. A track shout-out for me is "Automatic", its very different from the rest of the album, its a lot quieter and inward than the rest of the album. The guitar strumming is haunting and the pause at the end of the chorus is perfection!

Classic 80s sound

Fun girl-pop with some memorable hits. I prefer a band like the B-52's though, as they have a similar sound but the Go-Go's just lack a bit of the edge that makes the 52's so interesting.

A great pop-rock, new wave album that epitomizes the time in which it was produced, which also happens to be when I was a teen, so there is also a nostalgic element to it. My musical tastes have grown, or changed, as I’ve grown old, so I haven’t listened to the Go-Go’s for many years. Another fun listen! Sometimes the best part of this project is being reminded of things we once loved.

The drumming on this album is absolutely nuts. Instant classic that unfortunately not a lot of people are aware of outside of We Got the Beat, which imo is the worst song on here.

Too 80s pop for me

A couple really high highs among a sea of meh

super torn on this one. It’s kind of amateurish, with a lot of early days metaphor songs, weak rhymes, simple structures. I kind of want to give this a two like I would any other album that isn’t *bad* but needs more work or more polish. It’s also pretty catchy. The drums and bass are a lot of fun and there are some specific vocal flourishes that make me want to rate this a (low) four. It’s still more of a stepping stone to similar bands I like better but there are specific things about it I love. so it’s probably getting a three? But there are good arguments in either direction and a three feels like giving up.

I love how the band on this one doesn't take themselves seriously and are focused simply on having fun, it works well with the poppier side of new wave and punk that this album is drenched in. Probably favourite element of the album is the backing/harmony vocals are very well, not often for me the backing/harmony vocals are best element (I believe they're done specifically the best in the songs "Lust to Love" and This Town.") Highlight Song/s: "Lust to Love"

Really fun album, even if it's a bit bland. The energy is great and the songs are catchy. It's a good dose of power pop. Not to mention it's an all-girl album in an era where that was rare (and it unfortunately still is). Add in that this was the band's debut and it becomes even more impressive. Putting all those details together makes it a clear candidate for this list. Even so, I didn't really love it. It felt a little lacking in depth and substance, instead relying on its hooks to keep you engaged. As a result, there were a lot of songs on here that didn't really do a lot for me even though I liked them well enough. I enjoyed the listen without really thinking it was something much better than good. Overall: 2.9/5

Bitta fun but also a bit annoying

This is fun. Unchallenging fun.

Sleater Kinney in the 80s? OK, no, but this is closer than you might expect. If I had to guess when this was released, I'd guess the 90s before I guessed 1981. I suppose there's a through-line from the Ramones to this, as both are punchy and a bit fierce while also kind of being pop music at their heart. But this feels much closer to what punk music turned into. "Tonite" has a riff that's reminiscent of melodic hardcore; if you sped it up it would sound like a Bad Religion song. While it feels very ahead of its time, I do think it either needed more variety or bigger hooks to really succeed. The songs all short and fast verse-chorus-verse songs with no surprises. The group vocals are a nice touch, but the lyrics are nothing special. A really interesting album chronologically, but it doesn't quite come together for me.

Saw them in a small club in San Pedro ( I think) and was unimpressed. Except for being women, there was nothing that made them stand out musically from their peers. Typical peppy pop from that time and place.

This is good pop. I like good pop, probably more than most. But it's not a great album. I'm going to be a little generous in my rating because it was really refreshing to hear a girl group on fine form in amongst all the male driven serious stuff we get on this app.

A fine collection of New Wave, pop-rock tracks with a distinctly ’80s flair. There are a couple of standout tracks, presumably the singles, but nothing truly spectacular.

Pretty fun album, can definitely see the punk origins even if I wouldn't consider it punk.

I've never heard of these before, or any of their hits. I don't think they were anywhere near as big in the UK as in the US. There's some nice songs in here, but it's all very light and fluffy and forgettable though. It starts to feel quite samey by the end of it and I did find myself getting a bit bored, which isn't great at just 35 minutes. It's not wowing me, but it's also pretty accessible and easy listening. A thoroughly 3/5 album.

Candy pop. So fun. There are times when this music is appropriate and fun but couldn't listen to it often. Clever pop compositions, lyrics and fun vocals.

This was a pleasant surprise! I never would have listened to this album and while it feels a bit monochrome, it's much better than I expected. How Much More, You Can't Walk In Your Sleep, and Skidmarks On My Heart are quite catchy, but the stand out for me was Tonite. It's a bit more raw feeling than the other tracks, and that chorus! I can see myself coming back to this track.

I Got the Beat and especially Our Lips Are Sealed are so, so good. The rest of the album is good enough, but just didn’t grab me like those two tracks.

Um… no idea? That surprises me. Let’s see… Oh, I could have died without hearing this. But then I found out my husband did a talent show in junior high where he and his friends did something with We Got the Beat. He got to “play” the drummer. That’s worth 3 stars right there. And I gave ABBA 3 stars, so it’s only fair.

Post-punk 80’s pop that was a surprisingly good listen - better than I expected. Could probably listen to more of their catalog.

Bueno, para empezar, es un disco altamente pionero, donde el sonido juega el rol más importante en crear la atmósfera que el disco propone. Es un disco con melodías muy bailables y disfrutables. Se sienten confortables y no tienen una complejidad muy grande a la hora de escuchar; se sienten cotidianas. Pareciera que este álbum fue hecho para ser el soundtrack de una romcom o algo por el estilo. Percibo una vibra a The Cranberries y The Las, bandas posteriores cuyo sonido tiene una notoria influencia de esta banda. En general, el álbum se me hizo un poco lineal. No sentí una dinámica constante entre canciones y hay una estructura similar entre ellas. Sin embargo, en su totalidad, funciona muy bien a la hora de crear una atmósfera divertida y bailable. Voy a destacar, por sobre todas las cosas, el hecho de que este álbum sea pionero en liderar rankings globales con una banda pura y exclusivamente femenina. Con una industria dominada por el rol masculino, este álbum viene a romper con los estereotipos. Las letras tienen un guiño a las experiencias de jóvenes y adolescentes mujeres, situaciones que no se solían hablar en canciones, convirtiéndolas en un ícono en el mundo musical de la época. Realmente revolucionaron la música de la época en todo sentido. Personalmente, este álbum lo esperé con muchas expectativas, ya que quería escuchar un álbum pop de mujeres; sin embargo, se me hizo poco dinámico. En mi experiencia como oyente, funciona muy bien como música de fondo o para situaciones específicas. No me terminó de asombrar por completo, pero lo que significó este álbum en la cultura no lo puedo dejar de lado. Soy una persona a la cual el impacto de las cosas, el trasfondo y el significado le suman mucho a sus gustos. No puedo pasar por alto que este grupo de mujeres allanaron el camino hacia lo que hoy escuchamos como pop. Good pop-rock album. Clearly worth a listen. Energetic, enjoyable. I particularly liked "Automatic" (probably my favourite), "Our Lips are Sealed", "This Town", "We Got the Beat", or "Fading Fast". It's in the range between 3 and 4 stars.

Enjoyable punky new wave. Songwriting is tight but suffers from a rather thin production; I can hear the bass guitar fine and that kick drum is definitely there, but the version i'm listening to has like no low end in it's mix. "We Got the Beat" is a classic single, and I've used it as guitar and bass practice many times over. 7.5/10.

Kind of samey but it's a good sound so I don't mind all that much. We Got The Beat and Our Lips Are Sealed are the singles, I assume, and they're definitely the most focused tracks on the album.

Non troppo il mio stile di musica, da le vibes di country club/estate al lido nella casa dei nonni, sembra un gruppo degli anni Ottanta che cerca di fare musica anni 60. Le prime tre canzoni sono noiose, Lust to Love mi piace, quelle dopo sono orecchiabili ma non memorabili.

No conocía a la banda pero me terminó gustando el disco. Sobre todo al saber que fue la banda de los inicios de Belinda Carlise. Rock de los 80´s efectivo y pegadizo, con algo de proto punk rock. Lindo descubrimiento.

Don’t know if this is a UK vs US thing, but the Go Gos just never really caught on over here. I know Our Lips Are Sealed, but it’s the Fun Boy Three version that I heard first and for me it’s way better than the Go Gos shiny pop version. The rest of the album just washed over me. Bit samey tbh. Not bad, but not entirely sure what all the fuss is about. 3.

Pretty catchy album, though some of the songs felt like they ran for too long, even for a shorter runtime. Definitely very poppy but there’s some edge to it which I enjoyed. Our Lips are Sealed and We Got the Beat are classics so those were great listening to.

I really liked the album to start. A fun, fresh sound. I’m sure at the time it was even more unique. But as the album went on I found myself getting a little weary of the sound. A lot of the songs have a similar tempo, production style, and sound. Still think it’s pretty good, and deserves somewhere between 3 and 4.

Finally a girly band on this list. The GoGos are really fun and were a great start to my Saturday. Upbeat and breezy and starts with a straight up banger.

Starts out very energetic, peaks at we got the beat, but after that feels like it is losing the energy. In the end it is still enjoyable but feels a bit tired. Still a very much enjoyable record.

When Belinda Carlisle (and indeed Jane Wieldin) had late 80s mainstream success I was unaware of their status as US new wave stars in the Go Gos. The success of this album was almost entirely stateside though the Fun Boy three's hit single 'Our lips are sealed' (about Terry Hall's alleged affair with Jane Wiedlin) was by far the key track from this debut album. To my ears it's an all female self contained unit trying their best to emulate Blondie. An important act, usurped by the Bangles five years later but their solo members were to easily outstrip their initial influential work.

This album was in a similar style to several others we've heard so far, but this might be one example of a band that improved on the style of music produced from bands like the Ramones. I like the singer because she sings in tune, and I liked the vocal harmonies as well. The album had a unique amount of harmonic interest given the style, and there was a nice variety of chord progressions, which reminded me of Alvvays.

Another one where I'll be curious to hear your thoughts. Goes back to my youth, of course. I definitely liked (and still like) some of their songs. On this album, of 11 songs, I'd say I like maybe 4? The other 7 (or so) weren't terrible, but were kind of forgettable, and also, I think, sound a bit dated. Not in a terribly bad way, but enough that it fails the 'would I like to hear it again some time soon?' test. Speaking of which, I only listened to this album once (though I've heard it before); the 4 that I liked are the 2 hits, "Our Lips are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat," plus "This Town" and "How Much More." But, of the 4, the clear standout (to me) is "Our Lips are Sealed," which (not coincidentally - that it's the standout, I mean) was co-written by the great, and undersung 80s hero, Terry Hall, who was a leader of The Specials, and later Fun Boy Three, and The Colourfield (all worth checking out - especially The Specials -- and I hope he/they show/s up in the 1001 somewhere). Oh, yeah, I still need to rate this one. Another 3 stars for me, I guess. But those 4 songs are carrying most of the weight. (Might've been tempted to say 2.5, but 2 definitely feels a bit too harsh, for me.)

A striking, energetic and just plain fun debut. Probably too successful for its own good, considering how the desire for more hits ultimately curtailed the longevity of the band.

Suprisingly good and modern-sounding power pop from an era I usually detest. I was pretty sure I was gonna hate it, but I enjoyed it more than expected and ended up playing it twice. The "punk" and "new wave" influences are very discrete (kind of an afterthought, really), it's more radio pop than anything else, but the band is pretty efficient. The hooks are great ("Lust to Love" and "Automatic" slap hard), the energy is real, and the balance between cheerful and bleak hits the right spot for me. It didn't blow my mind, it doesn't really have much depth, but it was a nice way to start the day. Go girls ! 6/10

Didn’t like it at first: too simple, kind of poorly produced. But then I threw it on during a night with people, and it just clicked differently. Way more bouncy, good energy, actually works in that setting. I’d come back to it without a problem.

I think the Go-Go's are very underrated. Before streaming made every song instantly available, I made a four-CD collection of '80s pop. I excluded the giants (Prince, Michael, and Madonna). I later noticed that the only artist on all four discs was the Go-Go's. Few '80s pop acts had more than two or three hits, tops. Given the above, I was tempted to give this album four stars, but the deep cuts don't do much. They're not bad, but they're far from four-star material, and the two hits can't elevate the album as a whole to four stars.

This was much better than I expected. I must admit I judged it a little early on with the 80s arty-punky-women sound. But it was actually a lot of fun. Didn't give it a very focused listen so I'll try it again some day

This was an interesting and surprising album. The beat is great and it was a really fun album to listen to, and you can tell the girls are punkier than many "punk girls", however the new wave way of singing did disappoint me a bit. I understand it is the fashion at the time, but it gor tiring by the end of the album. As I had never heard about the band before, but heard about Belinda, this was weird. It was a good album overall, but does this belong to the list? 3/5

First time listening to Go-Gos album and was impressed. Of course the hits are well known but in general I love the guitar. Has a bit of surfiness to it and the rhythm section is tight. This might anger some diehard fans but while they are good singers, it kind of sounded samey to me after a while.

Couple of classics, but overall sounds like a first album from a band with potential, but who haven't worked it out yet.

Over all, this album is a lot of 80s pop and a lot of 80s rock mixed into a girl group. Pretty solid with fun, careless, and pretty lyrics in each song. Not too bad, but ended up a little bit repetitive by the end, especially by the last track, “Can’t Stop the World.” The cover very much fits the album, and is a really fun album to listen to. The guitars are heavily emphasized along with the vocals. Pretty good, but not my favorite! Still, not the worst at all! Best tracks: Tonite, We Got the Beat, and Our Lips Are Sealed. Some diversity in the songs, but can get into a similar rhythmic pattern. Not bad! 3.5/5

Pretty fun to start, but doesn't have enough variety for the whole album to really keep that excitement

It's a fine pop album. Styled on the heels of Fleetwood Nicks, a female lead with sharp bass lines is the name of the game. The Go Go's do it fairly well, with inoffensive vocals and musicals. It may have been groundbreaking in the day, but it's not super revolutionary in retrospect. It would be a fun album to have a carefree dance to. Not something I would seek out on the reg, but I would absolutely pull this album out for a lively party.

I'm a man. I love women. I strongly believe that if they were in charge we'd be so much better off. I can't say this album is objectively great. Very enjoyable mix of punk tinged pop and you can feel the empowered vibes. We Got the Beat is an all time classic but the rest of the album (which I first heard at maybe 8 years old) was very listenable but no real standouts. I mistakenly believed that Susanna Hoffs was part of this lineup. I always found her impossibly mesmerizing so was a little disappointed that I got my 80s girl band wires crossed. 3.9

My core memory of the go-go’s was riding around on scooters during a Miami Beach sunset and vibing to their music in my AirPods. This is a fun surf pop rock album. Is a lot of the popular stuff super redundant? Yes. But there’s some slappers too. The deep cuts are the highlight for me. Lust to Love and Automatic have a darker, more standard rock edge to them, and I really enjoy that blended with their style. Also shout out to the 1001 gods for finally giving me music that doesn’t make my ears bleed. Fav songs: Lust to Love, Automatic

I heard this record seriously like 5 times and I think it is a perfect 7/10. It has the perfect balance of iconography and also has a crazy good surf vibe. I see where alot of old school surf rock got its influences. Surf has never truly been an amazing genre in my eyes it always comes back to easy listening but I cant hate this at all and I am glad I did explore it.
