Gefälliger Indie rock
Already heard April skies, assuming it will be more like that but idk Darklands sounds good so far with the self titled song I had heard some songs of psycho candy before and it sounds much different, a little less of that early shoegaze style
Telling you now. This is one of those albums where I gave it a four because overall it's very good, but doesn't make my all timers, but it's probably one of my personal favorites and my favorite from The Jesus and Mary Chain.
This is my kind of music. Not as great as Psychocandy, but still a very good alternative rock/shoegaze album from the second half of the 1980s.
The Jesus and Mary Chain is one of those groups where I've heard the band name, but hadn't listened to their music until now. They're a Scottish alternative rock band whose only consistent members are the songwriting brothers Jim and William Reid. They are considered progenitors of the shoegaze and noise pop subgenres, and after listening to Darklands, I can see why. This album boasts the jangly, distorted guitars, droning effects, drum machine, and the brothers' hazy vocal deliveries. All of these elements coalesce into a blissful noise that feels laid-back in its presentation. Pair that with some vaguely dreary lyrics, and the vibe is set. That does lead me to my main issue with this record - the lyrics are simply there, and don't offer much in the way of detail outside of setting the mood on a cold, rainy day. It certainly works in that lane, but it could have afforded to be a little deeper. Still, Darklands was an enjoyable record from the Jesus and Mary Chain. This album, and by extension the group, certainly holds up well in light of later acts to follow.
i really liked the earlier songs on this album
A solid album that really emphasizes melody and atmosphere. While their debut was chaotic and noisy, Darklands is much more restrained and focused, almost like a dark pop record wrapped in a foggy, rain-soaked mood. The vocals are cold and detached, but they suit the melancholic lyrics and slow pace perfectly. It’s an album filled with loneliness and quiet desperation, yet delivered through simple, beautiful melodies. A strong and stylish record with a unique atmosphere. 4/5
Really liked this one. Will check out more TJAMC. Simpsons: No
This band has popped up in my recommended a few times, though I've never bothered to check them out. I guess maybe it's the clunky name? By all accounts this is something I'd probably at least appreciate. The song titles and the album cover makes me think it's gonna be something pretty dark sounding. But in all honesty I don't really have many expectations heading into it. Darklands I like the guitar quite a bit, gives off a bleak and dreary sound. Very distinct vocals. Nice progression on the chorus. The general sound of this reflects the era quite well. Depressing lyrics. Good. 4/5 Deep One Perfect Morning Don't love the vocals, they sound a bit unclear and muddied. I really like the longer guitar passages. Solid chorus. Decent. 3.5/5 Happy When It Rains Sounds kinda nostalgic. Really like how the guitar elevates the chorus. Decently romantic. The atmosphere of the really fits with the lyrics. Genuinely sounds like one of those sudden satisfying mid-summer downpours that never seem to last long enough. Great. 4.5/5 Down on Me I can appreciate the faster tempo, but the sterile drum machine sort of lacks any sort of life to it. I like the reverby guitar. The layering in the final minute is really good. Sounds large and satisfying in conjunction with the guitar. Decent. 3.5/5 Nine Million Rainy Days Kinda don't like the vocals here, sounds a bit dead. Decent bassline. I like the distortion on the guitar. The additional vocals help make the track a bit more dynamic. The moodiness builds up into a really powerful ending, where the vocals work much better against the more lively and dynamic instrumental. Decent. 3.5/5 April Skies The main guitar has a sentimental sound to it. Awesome solo. Great chorus, the following guitar section is really satisfying and catchy. Again quite nostalgic sounding, they really seem to catchy that cathartic romantic sound which would fit right at home at the end of a coming of age movie. Great. 4.5/5 Fall The buildup is a bit slow, but when it finally hits it really hits hard. Great ending section, though the rest of the track isn't to memorable apart from a few moments where the guitar really shines. Fine. 3/5 Cherry Came Too Really like the way the vocals change to fit the tone of the instrumental. Decent solo, follows the general tone if the song well. Boring bassline. Fine. 3/5 On the Wall Feels a bit meandering. Uninteresting vocal melody, feels really repetitive. Don't mind the backing vocals. I like the distortion in the background. Bleak and moody. Fine. 3/5 About You Has a bit if a soothing quality to it. The two guitars play well off each other. I really like the lyrics here. I enjoy the non descript and unceremonious ending. Fits really well with the rest of the album. Decent. 3.5/5 Romantic and moody. Has all of the late 80's indie charm without any of the pretentiousness. The songs are easy to understand with this charming almost nostalgic sounding atmosphere which takes you back to a simpler time. I'm a sucker for the repetitive basslines and the loud and clear guitar riffs. The mood they manage to create with a fairly limited sound is both consistent and at times quite carthartic. I ended up really appreciating the catchy songwriting both instrumentally and lyrically, and while nothing mindblowing it really encapsulates the era it came from. And while it has its flaws, mainly stemming from lifeless drums and a few uninspired sections in some of the songs, it's a fun time when you're in the right mood for it. Could definitely see this growing even more for me, but for now it's something I'd return to once in a while. 3.5/5 rounded up to a 4/5.
Good but a bit ambient
I went into this not expecting much, alternative post punk is generally not my thing but I was very pleasantly surprised with this one. The first song is great and honestly one of the worse ones on the album. The next three are excellent, the second half is also quite good, I especially liked “Cherry Came Too” I think what makes this one better than this genre normally is for me is that the vocals are a lot more melodic and the record’s sound is a lot more fun than this genre usually feels.
I liked it, and would revisit it. Some fun post new wave noise pop.
Its like a quiet banger
This was really cool! I had listened to some of this band's songs on random playlists, but I had never really stopped to listen to them. It exceeded my expectations, very good. 4 stars.
All of my friends loved this when it came out, but I never listened to it. It was like a very 80s brain of a Velvets album, and I enjoyed it
A really good album, it was a relaxing listen. I liked Nine Million Rainy Days and On The Wall the most.
I really wonder if the drum machine is the main reason why The Jesus and Mary Chain didn't become better known. They were riding high on the praise from their debut album, "Psychocandy" when Bobby Gillespie left to form Primal Scream. Rather than replace him, the Reid brothers opted for the aforementioned drum machine and kept going as a duo. The result is a bit closer to New Order than My Bloody Valentine, but still sort of inbetween. It has a bleak seriousness that New Order more or less abandonded when they lost Ian Curtis and embraced Italian disco. And MBV always desperately needed just a little more pop in their style to be anything other than a band you listen to when you're in the mood only. "Darklands" didn't achieve the fame they deserved, despite some amazing songs. "Down on Me" is severely underrated in my opinion. With apologies to Bobby Gillespie, I kind of didn't notice he was gone here. The Reid Brothers alone managed to prove they were more than just another shoe gaze band.
How did I not listen to these guys back in the day? I really liked this album a lot. The song “Darklands” is going on some of my playlists. It’s a 4 1/2 star album for me, but I’ll lower it to 4 here.
Initially listened and was bored out of my gourd… guess i shouldn’t have listened to it at work. Listened again later and loved it especially nine million rainy days
Something about the sleepy distorted guitar tones with the delicate vocal delivery really works for me. This feels like proto shoegaze. The pieces don’t quite come together for me, but there’s lot of good material here.
literally 5 of these 10 songs mention rain or skies in some capacity. i know the UK is rainy, but this is ridiculous! they should've called this album wetlands! (pause for laughter) also the song darklands is just love vigilantes 2 jesus and mary chain? more like newer order! cherry came too? i sure hope she did! ...oh wait, that's exactly what they were going for here. hmm. anyway, thanks folks, i'll be here all week. remember to tip your waitstaff! favorites: darklands, happy when it rains, down on me, april skies
In contrast to their debut album 'Psychocandy', The Jesus and Mary Chain recorded a more pop-oriented sound on 'Darklands' by reducing the noise and heavy reverb. This album also marked a shift as they replaced their departed drummer with a drum machine and incorporated synthesizers alongside bass lines. The result is 'Darklands' showcases a greater variety in sound and style, with a stronger focus on intricate chord progressions. The tracks I enjoyed the most include 'Darklands', 'Happy When It Rains', and 'April Skies'. "Darklands' is a very good album. Makes me miss the 80s.
Sad but in a summery sort of way. Very enjoyable after a few days of slog. Some songs making it on to my big ass playlist
The Jesus and Mary chain are great. Every so often I wonder if their stuff is too simplistic, but it's just sooo good I remember that is a stupid thought. I think of them as like a rockier New Order. Love it. Psychocandy is better album, so this can only be 4/5.
I’ve listened to The Jesus and Mary Chain a bit, but it took me until this album to get the dark Beach Boys vibes they have, which I’m kind of into.
I didn't ever really get into The Jesus and Mary Chain until recently. Maybe not until starting this list, I don't quite remember. But they're definitely right up my alley. Dark and vibey, good lyrics, interesting music. What's not to like? I do like this album a bit better than Physchocandy which I found to be produced a little unevenly. This record is much better produced and recorded and is just better to listen to all around. You can really hear the influence this record had on indie bands to come in the 90s, even some of the grunge bands seem to have borrowed from this a bit. 4/5
The calm I needed this week
I’ve listened to this before, good album
Had this album at a 3, but after reading about their influence on other bands I had to bump it up to a 4.
This album was definitely a better experience than Psychocandy I got as a daily pick on this challenge. Off the bat I found myself already nodding along and enjoying the music so much more. Makes me wonder why the other album is even on this list, when this one is that much better. I went from dread to enjoyment.

Great alt rock album
Great album from a criminally underrated band.
nice melancholic indie stuff, good time
Vibey, I liked this
For an album titled 'Darklands' this was very happy and hopeful sounding to my ears. The kind of music you'd listen to while falling in love with someone.
Far less noisy than their debut and obviously pushing harder on the side of the softer and sweeter songs they had on Psychocandy. I was never a fan of those songs really (I'm not crazy about Just Like Honey either) but I guess moreso because their debut is split between such cool noisy songs and more mild and sweet songs, with this one being mostly mild songs with 0 distortion you'd think it would be a dud but... no! I think the focus on sweeter, janglier rock with the Reid's disintrested demeanor really works a lot better for me. I think too that these are dreamy songs that don't feel skeletal or boring in their writing so that helps too, it's good!
Good stuff. The band evolves from their first album while retaining what made that one interesting.
Super cool.
Not as good as Psychocandy, but still really good.
Loved this album I high school when 9 Million Rainy Days resonated a lot more than it does now. The metaphorical clouds have lifted and the Beach Boys grooves and melodies are much more resonant. The first five tracks left me with the same dreamy - but with a good beat - feeling I had almost 40 years ago. And NMRD is still a great jam. As is often the case with "albums" when they still made albums - I was curious for side two. It's been a minute since I've been down that road. So when you flip it over what's waiting for you - none other than April Skies. And the dream continues...at least for one more lap...there's something warm about the rain.
I realize I've never listened to this group before. I enjoyed it a whole lot
Sounded really nice. 4 stars
Probably their best album of work - good sounds
I missed this, too, at the time, but would have loved it. I wasn’t listening to college radio which I think was probably the only place to her Jesus and Mary Chain in 1987. They sound much like other indie rock I love, like the Cure and the Smiths. The 80s had some really prime alt rock.
fantastic
Thin and shadowy rock music, buzzing with feedback but also chiming with melody. Great atmosphere and great songs. For my money, this is the successful master release that follows the rough pre-alpha build that was Psychocandy. Best song: Happy When It Rains
One of my favorite albums of all time.
Like the soundtrack to a cool 80s movie
This is just good. Not much more to say about it. Doesn't overstay its welcome, doesn't try to wow you with unnecessary theatrics, just presents good music and gets outta there in 36 minutes. Perfect.
Actually very good, glad I finally checked it out!
First couple tracks, I was thinking, "I like the guitar vibe, but i wish the drums were hard and dark." in the third track the drums kicked in. Great sound. Still wish it was a bit more powerful. 4/5
Like this one
Really a pleasant album. I've never heard of these guys before, so I'm glad I found them. Some great starts to song, and a good sound throughout.
Love the name of the group and love the sound
Wow! Actually very good. A nice discovery.
Have not fully listened but is very good so far. Might rate 5/5 on full listen.
Molto simpatico!
Shoegazing, melancholy and melody are 3 things I like. Was already familiar with the hits.
Remember going to see these play live at the Royal Court (Liverpool) 1987. Short but sweet. Always found these to be the better of the 1980s dreamy guitar type bands. Highlights include Darklands, Deep one perfect morning and about you. 4 stars from me.
See my previous review about why I fell out with the Jesus and Mary chain. Turns out I really have forgiven them. I put this on thinking I would fall asleep to it. But instead, it just carried me along and energised me. Love The brooding Scottish rain-drenched ambiance.
I have never been a JAMC fan and I guess it’s just because I didn’t hear them enough. This album is great!
While familiar with the name of this band, I would not have been able to recall a song or their sound. I loved this!
Well constructed. Great rock & roll.
Sounds remarkably similar to early Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, which appears to be by coincidence, but who knows? Regardless, the power-pop, shoegaze rock is infectious. The wall of sound never becomes aggressive enough to drown the passion, the vocals are diverse and always welcome and the little guitar medleys are a delight. When the music hits its climactic convergence, the emotional punch is palpable. This is beautiful and simple at the same time. I can hear so many styles that appear to have influenced contemporary indie bands to pop bands. Perhaps the singleness is fooling me into thinking this isn’t incredible, or perhaps I just need subsequent listens, but this teeters on a 5.
4- Stars (10/15)
never heard of them, had no expectations, ended up really enjoying this album!
I enjoyed this album a lot. Great pop album, sort of a bit of the more poppier version of Echo & The Bunnymen
Good
yayyyy
Lyder vildt godt! Har aldrig hørt dem før, de gav mig store Joy Division vibes
3.75
Dark
Exceptional journey through the Reid’s minds
"Darklands" is the kind of album that takes all the shoegaze filth and turns it into something beautiful, yet profound. And yes, the vocalist's voice can be a bit annoying to me, but that can be overlooked when you look at the overall result of the album. I wish I could say I didn't like this album, but I'd be lying if I said that.
Good album.
Man, this guy really likes the rain
Somehow reducing the drums to a machine has made this even better. Lush, open distorted guitar, simple but catchy chord structures and beautiful harmonies. Drum machine just sits in the background like heartbeat.
I listened to this while I put together a miniature book nook and drank tea and just had a grand time.
Now THIS is more like it! Brooding, melodic, cathartic indie rock. A real surprise as I’d only heard Psychocandy prior to this and both albums are excellent! In many ways this is more accessible maybe than their debut album and proves there’s more to the Jesus and Mary Chain than just feedback and squalling, squealing, loud guitars. Bloody brilliant!
un cambio de sonido interesante.
nice mellow dark-mood album, doesnt change up much but it keeps the vibe and im biased
dark is right. moody. old dad indie guitar. jangle. cure like. a bit harsh. shoegazey. spectacular. this one is where we should all wish to float along the river of life. calm and freeing.
Not what I expected, very chill
Enjoyed
This opening track is great. And I didn’t not expect to like anything on here. Really looking forward to this now. Thanks his album is fantastic. It still feels fresh even though it’s 37 years old as of today (10/23/24).
Very good
Poppy
So many 90s bands came along and ripped this off. I've never heard of this album or this band, but I feel like I've heard a lot of these songs in various forms before. To see it came out in '87 was interesting.
good stuff. indie esque, doesn’t get too fast a tempo
Moody, catchy, just plain good.
Always liked the band from the odd singles, but I don’t think I’ve listened to an entire album. Really liked this and some of the content of the extended version was reminiscent of Nick Cave.
This was wild. Really very good. 4.5.
Smiths cure dark sad vibes Very good
An enjoyable listen, I wouldn't say I have strong thoughts but I found it pleasurable
It's just great to listen to
as my introduction to the jesus and mary chain, this album certainly did them justice. i absolutely love the sound, with no one song being overly complicated, yet still achieving a near-perfect shoegaze sound. the ability to compose songs that are not intricate as such, but still work beautifully on an album requires a lot of talent, and they managed it brilliantly. songs that stood out - darklands, cherry came to and on the wall. possibly there were some slower parts - nine million rainy days - but that hardly affected the overall excellence of the record.
For some bands the jangly guitars are just that much more janglier. This is one such band of that late 80s shoegaze alternative scene, miles better than the earlier review Psychocandy album, the noise and distortion has been pared back significantly and the jangle pop is starting to rise.
Had listened to this previously and it's definitely an album that gets better the more you listen to it. Happy when it rains and April skies are instant likes, but tracks like Nine Million Rainy Days and Fall in particular grow on you over time.
Less Psycho, more Candy: “Darklands” sees the Jesus and Mary Chain tidying themselves up a little, and dusting down the same three-chord rule books that inform their whole career. “Darklands” came two years on from Jim and William Reid’s debut record as “Jesus and Mary Chain”. Their twenty-minute live shows were becoming increasingly nihilistic and violent, drummer Bobby Gillespie had jumped ship, and the brothers Reid had split with manager Alan McGee. In response, they crafted an album with a much more palatable shape, full of instant hits like “April Skies” and “Happy When It Rains”. While I enjoy a lot of the songs on “Psychocandy”, I find the infamous “wall of distortion” production a little wilful at times. “Darklands” may be less incendiary or revolutionary, but it is more listenable, giving more room to the songwriting craft the boys had in them from the start and leading to their only UK top ten album. It’s difficult to say whether the Reids had cracked pop’s magical alchemy here, or just stuck in their lane riffing on classics. Case in point: the opening title track sets up exactly what the next forty minutes have in store, front-to-back, like a giant, wailing table of contents. Time after time across the rest of the album, we hear the same “Be My Baby” bass drum rhythm, the same crashing major chords, the same baritone quiver. Music enthusiasts may enjoy either deconstructing the songs or sniffily calling out the influences (“On the Wall” is very Velvet Underground… “Fall” is Iggy Pop reincarnate… “Nine Million Rainy Days” feels kind of Cure… “Darklands” is like a Phil Spector joint… etc, etc.) The influences are worn proudly on sleeves here, with the glorious highlight “Happy When It Rains” even reusing a riff from the band’s own repertoire (“Something’s Wrong”). This “JAMC comfort zone” is great news for fans of the band’s sound (like me) but won’t do much to win over their sceptics. Perhaps the biggest diversion comes at the very end, with “About You” stripping (almost) everything back to clean rhythm guitar and vocals. It’s an effective comedown to end with, leaving the haze, distortion, and glory days of Jesus and Mary Chain in the rear view mirror. Above all, “Darklands” is epic and ecstatic: credit song after credit song to the greatest films not yet made. They make me feel that if I had a car, I’d get in it; if it had a sunroof, I’d pull it down; if there were a sunset, I’d drive into it; if there were a speed limit, I’d ignore it… all the way to some new beginning. Cinema.
As far as alternative goes, very essential 80s album
Very good music
Better than expected
Rating: 8.5/10 Great album, they toned down the noise on this one while still being incredibly catchy and melodic.
I’m only familiar with one song by the Jesus and Mary Chain, “Head On,” but I really like that song, and I was really excited to see Darklands pop up for me to review today. If this album is anything like “Head On,” I think I’m going to have a good time with this one. I really wanted to fall in love with this album, but sadly, that didn’t happen. I thought Darklands was really good, but it’s the type of album where I’m much more likely to only revisit certain songs instead of the whole album. I did enjoy the overall sound of the album, which was really well defined by some great guitar parts. I loved the shimmery, echoey sound that was utilized, and I thought the drum machines did a great job of adding some darkness that contrasted with the bright guitar tones. This album reminded me of Echo & The Bunnymen’s Ocean Rain, in the sense that the sound was big, but everything about the album managed to feel really intimate. I enjoyed the songwriting, and the vocals did a great job of carrying the melancholy lyrics. “Happy When it Rains” was my favorite song on the album, but “Darklands” and “April Skies” were almost just as good. I also liked “Deep One Perfect Morning” and “Cherry Came Too.” Even though I didn’t fall in love with this album, I enjoyed it, and I thought it was objectively a really good and unique album. I’m looking forward to reviewing Psychocandy some day.
Friggin' cool album. Geggjað. Þægileg plata með vinnu. Hef lítið hlustað á TJAMC en mun henda því í róteringuna það er klárt.
The Jesus and Mary Chain voru frábær viðbót í indíið á sínum. Besta platan en Just like honey þó alltaf besta lagið og það sem heldur nafni þeirra á lofti.
4/5. Dark and brooding, a little too edgy sometimes but cannot deny the accessible, sometimes catchy, post punk songs. Hooks mixed with punk lyrics is an interesting choice and I think they found that nice balance. Don't think I'd listen to it on repeat but it is a good one to throw on now and then, when I'm feeling happily depressed. Best Song: Darklands, April Skies, Nine Million Rainy Days
While I like the abrasiveness of Psychocandy, it was nice hearing something that felt cleaner and more restrained, resulting in some nice pop songs. A strange counterpart to their debut, which in places here, feels like it falls heavily on the singles while a few other songs fade into the background. Nonetheless, this is indeed a pleasing listen.
I knew ahead of time that there's quite a shift between Psychocandy and this album, but boy, I was not expecting what I got. I actually listened to Psychocandy for the first time about a week prior to getting this, good luck of a kind I guess. The difference in genre is quite big. It might not have been historically seen as that different in terms of the label they put on the music, but in my eyes (and ears), it is a lot more common to hear music that sounds like this album rather than Psychocandy. Dinosuar Jr. is pretty much the closest I know of (so far) that incorporates noise similarly to this band, but they take it much further into the rock direction. Most bands do a worse job at this dream pop style, but at the end of the day, I don't see this album as groundbreaking. I did enjoy it quite a lot though, their strengths in simple pop composition still shine through in this album, and they fill the room created by stripping back the noise very well with good production and a clean drum machine. It's a little difficult to assign a rating for this one. Pretty much any other album in this genre I've listened to would get a three at best, but this album is the best of its kind I've heard by far, and I feel like it might break me into more dream pop stuff, so I'm choosing a four for this one. This band is overall really impressing to me in terms of how much they've stretched my appreciative ear, they've surprised me across both albums I've listened to from them so far.
I've never been a huge fan of The and Mary Chain and Psycho Candy is probably their classic and only "must hear" album, but I've always preferred that one over it. Even if it's less daring and its predecessor, at least it's more consistent.
I really liked it! Cool alt rock!
I liked it. Honestly, the most solid album I've heard by them
Pretty sure I caught these at Primavera one year, a lot feels familiar and took me back anyway. I thought I was only familiar with Pyschocandy but recognised quite a bit of this. Big fan of this sound: sort of dirty, dreamy indie. A clear influence on lots of bands from the 2010s, but despite racking my brains I cannot seem to put my finger on who. Definitely maybe Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Sunny Day in Glasgow, but I’m certain theres someone more obvious. Perhaps its because there’s a lot of Velvet Underground in this, and there’s a lot of VU in more bands than I’ll ever know. Either way, I like this. Will be back.
I thought jesus and Mary chain were shoegaze, so either I was wrong or I still don't know what shoegaze is. It was quite good though, reminded me of the cure a lot, must have been influential on a lot of bands to come. Once the album finished there weren't any tracks that stood out but it definitely warrants another listen, 3.5.
Did enjoy this, but after the first couple of songs, I thought I might enjoy it more than I did. Still good though.
pretty solid shoegaze album. fit the vibe for my day, which might've given it an extra star.
Easy listening
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what it is that I like about this record. It should be droning and whiny and repetitive. And it is all of those things, but good somehow. It shouldn’t work at all. But it’s genuinely great. 4/5
Cool record. I am not sure I like it as much as Psychocandy. The move to drum machines, and it feels a bit more post-punk than that hard reverby noise and shoegaze sound that I liked so much on Pyschocandy. Still a good record for sure.
Alt rock, jangle pop. A very clean and refined album, I really enjoyed the somber, melancholic attitude of this album. Strong themes of rain really makes me want to listen to it when it's pouring outside. Like a nice summer fall rain. Jangly guitars with plenty of fuzz and pretty monotone vocals make a very atmospheric soundscape, however the drum machine really holds this album back. Like it could be so raw but the drums make a touch TOO refined. I liked the sound of the album, which is good because they have one sound and really stick with it. I feel this is the kind of album that has a good setting or mood to listen to it in, otherwise it's just kind of good. The length helps this though, does not overstay its welcome. Overall a great listening experience, very relaxing, but it feels like its missing something. Would revisit in the right setting. 4/5
Pretty solid. I dug it from top to bottom. Nothing stuck out as particularly genius, but I can't really find anything negative to say about it either. It's just a good listen.
Great album. Better than the last JMC album we listened to. I think I have been sleeping on them a bit in my regular listening...will have to come back. 4.5/5
I love the driving energy of this album. It has a kind of innate coolness to it. The only thing is there's not tons of variation, and a bunch of the songs sound quite similar. It's a good listen though.
Excellente surprise.
I’m not sure why, but I enjoyed this a hell of a lot more than I did Psychocandy. I made the observation with my review of that album that although I like a lot of the music that Paychocandy inspired, for the album in and of itself, I was never a fan. Darklands may have changed my mind. And the baffling thing is, I really don’t think it’s that different. Darklands has maybe a fuller sound, and relies less heavily on the crushing distortion. I think the real difference is that they stopped overtly ripping off their influences in the Ramones and the Stooges, and instead focused their effort on incorporating them into much better songwriting. The only complaint I have is that Psychocandy has Just Like Honey, which is an all time classic Pop song, and Darklands just doesn’t have that standout track. If it did, it’s be an easy five stars. As it is, it’ll have to settle for a four, and the knowledge that I’m definitely gonna go back and give Psychocandy a second shot, based on my much I enjoyed this one
Pretty good - nice and loose guitars and raw emotion
As a kid who grew up and discovered alternative music in the 80’s this is one of the albums that’s like musical comfort food.
Excellent album. Original sound. Loved it
Good album. Easy to listen to. Loving the guitar.
Maybe closer to a 3 for me if I'm honest but rounding up to a 4 for the immaculate vibes
The thing about Jesus and Mary Chain is you kinda always know what you're going to get. This might be another one that is more notable due to its (sizable) influence rather than its inherent quality. A very enjoyable listen but nothing that is going to challenge you.
I'd previously only ever listened to Psychocandy once and only thought it was decent, so I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Some really good tracks on this and it makes me want to go back to their other music. Fav songs: Happy When it Rains, April Skies, Darklands
I wasn't sure if I would like this one going into it, but it was actually pretty nice. Absolutely gave 80s movie vibes.
Great album, great band! I enjoyed this one a lot, being super stoned right now probably aided in that because it might just be a little too slow otherwise. Still great though.
80s vibes
A good dose of Scottish alt rock! Lovely stuff.
Need a half star here (3.5). I’m not new to Jesus and Mary Chain but had never fully listened to this album. Definitely solid!
This might be the first album from this list that I liked without previously knowing that I already liked it. Sounds like the missing link between Leonard Cohen and Kevin Morby mixed with occasional early American rock and roll.
The first time I heard these guys was on The Crow soundtrack. Snakedriver. But other than that I don't think I've heard anything else from them. I'm enjoying it. It's got good energy. I'm leaning towards 4 stars here. Yeah this was a good album!
A significant act foretelling many later developments of the "rock" idiom taken in its largest sense, which is why it is still remembered today, I guess. Compared to debut *Psychocandy*, this one is more restrained and less noisy, obviously. Oddly enough, you don't really feel like the first album had a real drummer (Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie), and this one had a drum machine, ha ha. Those horrid eighties "gated drums" aesthetics are to be blamed here, that goes without saying. Apart from that, a cool LP, drawing as much from the Velvet Underground as it draws from the Beach Boys. The best of both worlds for me (and probably the *worst* of both worlds for some other listeners, lol). 4/5. Easy to listen to. Good background music. I liked it.
This is a more accessible, more pop-driven album by The Jesus and Mary Chain, following the band's classic, feedback-laden debut, Psychocandy. Although the band retains much of their sensibility on this album, the replacement of a live drummer with drum machines diminishes a certain texture from their sound. Additionally, I didn't particularly like the 3 tracks with William Reid on vocals, who really has a flat voice compared to his brother Jim. When the band gets it right though, they really get it right, creating a rainy day album for the ages. Jangly, dreamy and bittersweet, the songs lack the aggressive noisiness of the band's earlier work, making for a much more pleasant listen. The lyrics are typically gloomy for JMC, but they really work with the whole mood of the album. Although I personally tend to prefer Psychocandy, Darklands is in a lot of ways a more listenable and more successful album. It's probably the better album to start with if you're new to the band. Fave Songs: Happy When It Rains, April Skies, Fall, Deep One Perfect Morning, Cherry Came Too
Shoegaze isn't my favorite genre, but just like the best of The Smiths and The Cure, The Jesus and Mary Chain at their best strikes a certain mood pretty perfectly. This is their album I like most, and at 10 tracks in 36 minutes I appreciate that they could be moody without killing the pacing. Highlights - Happy When it Rains, Down on Me, April Skies, Fall
Pretty good
Jezus and Mary Chain, Joseph has gone douing some carpenter work I guess. Beautiful album, best are Happy When It Rains and the title song, 4 stars and not 5 because have to compare it to the brilliant noise of Psychocandy, their 1st and best album, and the once email address of a very dear one.
This is absolutely NOT what I thought The Jesus And Mary Chain sounded ilike. This will be interesting...I always enjoy being proven wrong. Plenty of heavy jangle. Like that the drums are right out front; cheers to the drummer. Oops - just read that they used drum machines on this. Still... I find the faster tunes much more enjoyable than the slower ones. Still, this is one of the better albums I've been introduced to so far in this 1001 project. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ __________________________________ 🎧 # of LPs reviewed: 21 🎧 # of LPs left to review: 980 🎧 # of LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 4 🎧 # of LPs I *might* include in my own list: 9 🎧 # of LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine: 5
Hele chille muziek!
3.5
Great album.
It was a nice combination of pop rock with a little more emphasis on the rock.
Wow I originally thought I was gonna hate this. I actually really enjoyed it. Super sad boi 80s indie. Some proto-shoegaze vibes in there as well. Reminds me a bit of The Smiths.
Great album
Wasn't looking forward to this due to the album art and shit name. But it's actually decent album
This is my second album from this band. I remember being kind of ambivalent about Psychocandy, but I definitely liked this. Again, their music has a super familiar quality to it even though I'm fairly certain I've never listened to them. During "Fall" I realized perhaps it's because a newer band I like, La Femme, sounds slightly like it, despite being a totally different genre. So maybe that's it. Anyway, I wasn't enamoured with this but I liked it enough that I'm going to make a point of listening to it again.
SOLID shoegaze album
It's great
Never really listened to J&MC but it's really good!
A Great Album!!
4/5 where is the shoegaze?
Darkland is an album that I often listen to, so this review may be biased. I think this is a brilliant example of Scottish noise pop. The album has a captivating and immersive quality, and some of the songs, such as April Skies and Happy When It Rains, are really outstanding. However, I do think that this album is not as good as Psychocandy, their debut album even though both sound very different. I prefer the live drums of Bobby Gillespie over the drum machine used here, and I also like the more abrasive and noisy sound of their first album. This album is still a great melodic album, but not their masterpiece. I give it 4 stars out of 5.
Classic 80's vibes. Feels like it could be the soundtrack to a John Hughes movie.
Didn’t expect to like this as much as I did. Listened to it twice because I wasn’t quite paying attention the first time. I’d say it was worth a second listen. I’d never heard of this band before but now I think I’ll need to check them out. Had a good time with this album. 7.5/10 Top 3: 1. About You 2. On the Wall 3. Happy When it Rains
The Jesus And Mary Chain fully embrace their romantic side on Darklands. And while it works (more than) great, I’m still left missing parts of the noisier approach of their debut.
not bad
78/100
The Ying to Psychocandy's Yang. Its very solid shoegaze
Chilling and reconforting vibe . Good album overall
Great pre-shoegaze album
Haud yer weesht an' get oan wae it
It’s funny the day before this I despised to put on a different Jesus and May Chain album. As I did that I was like I am sure tomorrow they will come up on my list. And lo and behold. Really solid record.
Really cool bad I haven't listened too in a while. You can tell they drew influence from the Velvet Underground, and I'm sure bands like U2 and Lush drew influence from them. Anyone else feel like some of these songs belong in a John Hughes soundtrack? Solid 4/5
velvet underground in the 80s I dig. 4.5/5
Felt like I was watching a Cameron Crowe movie the whole time. Also didn’t recognize a single song so that was fun! Really liked it!!
Had never listened to any of this before, but surprisingly really like it. Which is mildly concerning.
Sounds fresh 35 years later
Third Listen. Fantastic 4/5 1987 Standouts: Darklands, Happy When it Rains, April Skies, Deep One Perfect Morning 4/5
I'll admit, this was a lot more enjoyable than I expected. The Jesus And Mary Chain are one of those bands I never listened to, thinking they would be too dark or gothy, but actually I kind of like their sound. I probably won't buy all their albums, but I will listen to more. Intriguing.
soft grungy, shoegaze, solid listen
So while I think Just Like Honey is seminal, I think the rest of Psychocandy is pretty middling. This though I love. Doesn’t hit the heights of their biggest song but remains solid throughout
4.5
Not as dark as their reputation might suggest
Rock and roll but sadder.
That difficult "post-feedback" album
I'm not sure how I missed the boat on this band but I love it....great listen all the way through
Album 137 of 1001 The Jesus and Mary Chain - Darklands Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Track : Happy When it Rains Scottish Alternative Rock. Makes it worthwhile when I find something I enjoy which I was totally unaware of before. Enjoyable album. Low key rock. This is one I could see growing on someone. You can't be fully sure, upon a first listen, if this will be one of those that sticks around over the long run no more that you can tell if someone new you meet will be a lifelong friend. I suspect this is a favorite of many. Glad I got to listen.
Hmmm, I’ve always loved Automatic, but hearing this I realize that contained a lot of rehashing, and this album was first. So my Automatic love gets automatically transferred here.
What a second album. !
Nice mellow album
4/5
Este me gustó mucho
In an attempt to prove themselves to not be perceived as one trick ponies, The Jesus and Mary Chain opt for a more softer approach on the ironically titled Darklands and, while the material presented here is not as memorable or as defining as those on Psychocandy (any attempt to surpass that would be admirable but ultimately insurmountable), the Brothers Reid and their band largely succeed on the basis of doing something new. Favorites: Darklands, Deep One Perfect Morning, Down on Me, Nine Million Rainy Days, April Skies, Cherry Came Too, On the Wall.
I liked this album, good vibe. Best song: Darklands
Short and sweet. I worked in East Kilbride for many years and still own a flat up there. This band is probably just about the only good thing to ever come out of East Kilbride! The music is a lovely mish mash, with some parts sounding shoegazey, others like a Scottish version of the Velvet Underground. It's minimal in places, with little in the way of guitar solos or hook lines. The lyrics are suitably dark and depressing, with an undercurrent of humour "dead like a Christmas tree" springs to mind. I have to say that I actually prefer other work by this band and I was slightly missing the wall of noise I had been looking forward to when I saw the Jesus and Mary Chain come up. Difficult to award 5 stars, but definitely a 4.5.
Ooooh I had never listened to this band before and I don't know why (I always thought the name was dumb, maybe that's why?) But this was just what I wanted today. Will be coming back to this one and checking out more.
This might be my favourite brand of this shoegaze mumblecore fuzziness style.
Before listening to this, I knew this band only by name. I was pleasantly surprised - the songs on this album are really good. Nothing earth shattering, but real good songs from the rock-realm (with a pinch of pop mixed in here and there). 4/5
Nostalgiskt. Håller fortfarande men inte som Psychocandy. Borde varit en tiogradig skala men jag är ju snäll.
I've always known about Jesus and Mary Chain, and was familiar with a few songs, but never really sat down and listened to them. I definitely got into this one.
Quiet pleasant album to listen to while winding down on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Vocalist has a calming voice. Feels like an album to be highly regarded and recommended by purveyors of taste and played in cool record stores.
Very cool early shoegaze. Felt very punky and gave off some joy division vibes (mainly the singer). You can really hear the roots of shoegaze here with the very noisy moments and the layered yet shrouded vocals. Overall a great record and one that i probably wouldn't have found if not for this list 4.4/5
Origineel, en divers. Je hoort de invloed op anderen. Ga ik vaker luisteren.
More pop oriented and less noisy than the debut but still sounds like same band. Some might object to the higher degree of sheen and it certainly doesn't, to me have the impact and shock and awe effect of Psychocandy, but is it good album? Damn straight, 4 stars
Pretty good 80’s music. Not super essential, but enjoyable.
I know the opening track is supposed to be sad but it's way funnier to think that he's talking about The Lorax. That aside, I did really enjoy this album. It felt kind of Goth sounding in a way. I'm not sure if they really are but to my armature ears they are.
Ok. So, I didn't know that I am apparently emulating the Jesus and Mary Chain when I dink around and try to compose downtempo rock music for myself. No idea how these guys made their way into my consciousness. This is the first time I've listened to this song. I've known about this band, but never knowingly listened to them. And yet, here I am, listening to an album that sounds like the stuff I'm trying to make, feeling as familiar as if I've been listening to them for my entire life.
5/5 would listen while sleeping again
A great example of how you can use mood and noise and guitars and still remember that songs need tunes. Really good album m.
Nice soothing vibes, makes me remember of pink floyd and despache mode
Yes! Quintessential indierock. Superb noisy mix of catchy grooves and hook-lines and solid guitar work
Underrated gem, this album gives you moody but melodic songs with subdued indie charm long before it was ever a sought after commodity in music. Great listen.
Their debut album, Psycho Candy, was a brilliant display of proto-shoegaze if it ever existed. The follow-up, Darklands, cleans up the sound a bit so it loses the shoegaze-y edge, but still writes catchy songs for the modern alternative man. I think I prefer Psycho Candy between the two, but this is still worth checking out if you liked Psycho Candy.
This is type of good album that can be enjoyed in many different contexts and allow the listener to pick up on the layers of the music I enjoy a healthy dose of shoegaze to the earbagels 4/5
good
3.5 stars. Enjoyed this record. Felt like it started to emerge from the 80's and bring in some 90's alt rock influence. Standout is "April Skies."
OOH I might like the opening track. Its like a favourite song I forgot. ( I dont know htis band) Sounds like Rat Cat mixed with Joy Division. Compelling - I will listen again. Big moody presence <--->party ish vibes. [seems to be the range] P.s. I look it up - apparently I already love the song "just like honey" so maybe i knew this band, hence the familiar sound. and the energetic tracks do it for me ...
I actually listen to this more than Psychocandy.
Never heard about them before, but wow - but at least part of the album was great.
I knew they were Scottish from the first chords, although I hear echoes of Hoodoo Gurus and The Church (both great Australian bands).
Moody 80s alterna-rock. Before goth was goth.
The easy listening version of JAMC
“Is this still Jesus and Mary Chain? I like this.” pops in from the next room. Always nice when you and your cohabitant like the same music. “…this is so enjoyable”. I think the bass is really good throughout, grungy guitars, and lyrics and vocals really give an attitude. Life is hard but just keep kicking your way though it.
Good stuff. Esp like Happy When It Rains
enjoyable, haunting, jangling, echoy and driving. very alternative pop. easy to like.
Another band I think I've seen the name before but never listened to. Didn't know what to expect and really enjoyed it.
Slaps.
The band name is familiar, but I couldn't tell you any songs from The Jesus and Mary Chain. The music sounds like it would have been something I would have listened to when Darklands was produced. If you listen to the Cure, you might listen to this - a somber entry in Brittish alternative. I liked the album enough to listened to the extended edition. "April Skies" was my favorite track from the album.
I remember when we asked my long hairs form teacher at school in early 90s what his favourite band was and he said The Jesus & Mary Chain and while we had heard the name, we knew nothing of the music itself and kinda dismissed it as some hippy crap. It is a sound that would be much more prevalent a little later into the 90s. Maybe ahead of their time!? At points it reminds me of something by The Vaccines…. Stand out tracks for me.. Down On me & April Skies
If the beach boys stopped practicing and they showed up to the studio and the velvet underground left their equipment.
Pop drenched in distortion, to misquote someone else. I enjoyed this and would recommend to anyone.
I really love JAMC, and this is their 2nd best album. Its great, but I don’t take away much new from this record other than a different approach to very similar songs. But still, this Scottish goth rock approach to American ‘50’s doo-wop/pop groups is an amazing formula, brain-melting feedback or not.
I like it still. Now I realize how they were winding down the 80’s sound and sliding into 90’s grunge.
Dope
Great stuff, fuzzy, shoegazy with some pop aspects peppered in. I really enjoyed this. Listened to this one two times over in succession. It just sounds cool, simple as that. Will listen again! 4 stars
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
god that opening guitar riff sounds so cool do do do DO DO DOOOO album has a great vibe to it, like it's gloomy but rowdy and ready to kick ass at the same time. just fuzzy guitars and gothic muttering. not a lot to say really, album is mostly mood and texture but it's a great mood so i can't complain
this is a 3.5 rounded up, for some reason this album felt a lot longer than it was to me but it was in a neutral way. was a fine listen that i don’t have a lot to say about, first half was my favorite.
[George enters with a yellow flannel on] I just want to preface by saying I fucking love this kind of music. Whatever the hell this is called, I'm into it. I've listened to Psycho candy before and was told it was "essential listening", and while I actually do prefer Psycho Candy over this, it's still a really solid album. - Darklands was a great opener, upbeat but still slow. - Deep one perfect was OK - Happy when it rains was really good. It reminds me of a Billy Idol song. I too love it when it rains. (Relatable!!) - Down on me was good - Nine Million rainy days was very good - April Skies was REALLY good - Fall was - Cherry came too I love, its so sweet - On the wall was very good, another banger - About you was good Overall I really enjoyed it! There were only a few tracks I felt impartial to. I'm feeling a strong 4 to a light 5. Y'all know this is just my opinion right?
Every time one listens to TJ&MC, one wonders why one doesn't do so more often. The balance of sweetness and sonic fuzz makes for a deceptive softness – yes, dark and soft and sweet is quite an apt description of this record. There's a likably consistent mood and tone across the whole thing that easily transcends any sense of sameness.
I thought it was good, not particularly memorable though, in my opinion. Favourite: Fall
After reading some glowing reviews I was convinced that this was not going to be my thing. Really don't like the idea of a drum machine and someone called them ""miserable Glaswegians" so I thought ok, some more music that i really don't feel like listening to. Well! Right away I liked what I heard! I found the music to be soothing, floating lithely through the air like on a magic carpet. It became more intriguing with each new track, in other words, each new song contrasted with the previous but mostly retained the same soothing quality. Such a pleasant surprise. I will have to give it another listen and see if it will be a keeper.
This album is a very well produced. It’s a bit more pop like than their first album but there’s a maturity that really shines through. The songs are crisp and the beats are almost laconic in how they trudge forward. Overall a very good listen.
very solid.
This album fits perfectly in with the best of post-punk that was coming along in the late 80s...it's dark, it's a bit mopey, and in that musical sweet spot that draws in goths. Also, when comparing to other post-punk acts, this album was really very inoffensive and easy to listen to. These guys are far less gimmicky than other bands in this style. This album has a very cool atmosphere about it that I don't really have words for. Compared to other post punk acts, this band is not nearly as well known or celebrated, but they should be. I think I'd put this at a 3.5, so I will go ahead and round up.
Jangly guitars, driving bass and drums, whispery vocals - Jesus and Mary Chain are the 80s alt sound. Always enjoyed their sound and look. Really enjoyed this album and kept listening to other tracks from them all day.
nära en femma. stort pluspoäng för längden på albumet
J'aimais bien au début, puis après j'ai eu l'impression d'écouter la même chanson 10 fois. 3,5/5
When your first encounter with The Jesus and Mary Chain is filled with scraping metallic shrieking feedback all the way through, it's a little daunting to get back on that horse. But happy I did, since I really enjoyed this album. It has a nice 80s alternative sound with 60s influences. It was something I would be glad to revisit again.
Oh man, not these guys again... But wait, this doesn't sound the same as I remember them. This album was totally listenable...even pleasantly so...
Great album.
This album is a reaction to the reviews of the earlier Psychocandy. The wall of sound is gone, but the "style" is still there. Songs are a little more drawn out and the band explores the space - it doesn't sound empty at all. I don't like this album quite as much as Psychocandy or Automatic, but there are some killer tracks and it's still a great record.
I like the aesthetic a lot but nothing here stands out as a classic. If only it was just a little more... something. Anything. Louder, quieter, sadder, prouder.
Encore une belle découverte
encore un album écouté par mon subconscient cependant il m'a laissée de bonne humeur et pourtant j'étais dans un oui go
Happy When it Rains and Down on Me are both very good feel good songs. A very pleasant listening experience. The mellow rock is both calming and uplifting
Unlike a mole, I still like this one.
Nije psychocandy ali je super
An absolutely excellent sophomore outing and a rare one that follows an iconic debut. This album is a whole mood. Brooding and goth in all the right places. I loved it.
not my favourite but good .
3.75
This band and album went under my radar. So happy to finally get the privilege to listen to it. Amazing
Not a remarkable album but I did enjoy a few songs to warrant a 4z
Very nice album, good vocals, good lyrics, nice guitar tones. Listened to it twice on a walk and it was a great way to clear my head. Favourite tracks: Happy when it rains, about you
catchy and moody, the best combo. favorite tracks: darklands, happy when it rains, april skies
Unexpected but wonderful!
Needs to be included in the next season of Stranger Things, so Gen Z can all wet the bed about it and discuss the pronouns used by Jesus and Mary. They/them
Unexpectedly good, albeit a little boring sometimes.
Pretty good tbh. Reminds me of common garage bands now and wonder if they served as the foundation for modern music now.
Washy goodness - I love the sound, and each song blends into another to make up a great record from start to end. There are standout tracks, but this is an album to enjoy in it's entirety.
Great album. My favorite of theirs will always be Automatic. Really underrated band though.
I never really got into the Jesus and Mary Chain when I got into post-punk. They always just kind of passed me by, and I never got around to listening to much of them in the years since. Spinning this now, I can see the appeal of their jangley sound, but I think I missed the window to totally get on board with them. This is good, but I’d rather put on Depeche Mode or Slowdive or something. Gonna say C+
Nice listen. Great Scottish pop/alt/punk.
Warm and nostalgic sound, just like honey!
Niet zo memorabel album, maar wel goeie muziek
It's a vibe I could certainly settle down into. Fave: April Skies
Classic walk through the 80s musically.
I recently got 'Psychocandy', which had a stronger single (Just Like Honey), but overall 'Darklands' is a better and more accessible album as it's more poppy and the fuzzed-out guitars are toned down a bit.
Did it help that I listened to this on a wet, overcast day? Probably.
Good early alternative. Solid
Listened before? N I've heard of these guys before but never really listened to them. This one was pretty good! Reminds me of Echo and the Bunnymen a bit. I enjoyed it. Added to Library? Y Songs Added to Playlist: Happy When it Rains, April Skies
I only knew pyschocandy. This is a lot more mellow. Still a a good listen.
I really like The Jesus and Mary Chain. This is not my favorite album from them, but it's still a very good one.
on paper i should like this, i don't not like it, but don't know when I'd choose it, especially given it sounds a bit 80s now
I really dig it
I could listen to a lot of this.
Back in the 80s I enjoyed a lot of the new wave/alternative music, but I was never into it enough to delve deep into the different artists. As a result, I was never sure when I heard a song if it was Jesus and Mary Chain, The The, Psychedelic Furs, or any number of other faceless new bands. Giving this a good listen now though, I’m pretty impressed with this band. Really good stuff that I need to listen to again. 4 stars.
This album was nice. A chill vibe.
Was good, love the voice and the tone
Legalzinho Melhor música: april Skyes
I don’t know how I’d missed this!
Great guitar wall of sound. Reverb and atmosphere for days.
Really good
I enjoyed this so much more than I thought I would, and I feel I really slept on The Jesus and Mary Chain.
I thought to myself, NO MORE PUNK. And they listened, and I actually enjoyed this. I just... am done with punk.
