Reviews (page 2 of 8)

I’m pleasantly surprised to be at a 5. I gave “Psychocandy” a 3, which boiled down to 3 specific reasons. First, the wall of sound that was so prevalent there didn’t really add anything meaningful to the tracks or the enjoyment of those tracks. Secondly, the drums & vocals felt like they had no real presence or emotion, at least not to the degree I would’ve expected. Finally, the track order never found a natural progression, which led to a disconnected album experience. All of those reasons felt valid for “Psychocandy”, and I was hoping they’d fix these when this album popped up as today’s pick. They fixed them, alright. This is a much better album than Psychocandy, on account of all of those issues being fixed, & blending them with strong songwriting. The lyricism here is able to channel the melancholy mood established at the top of the album with “Darklands” on most of its tracks. It occasionally feels like a sort of shoegaze-y Springsteen, which is a big bit of praise in my book. It is pretty dark overall, but I’d say the focus on love tracks, some occasional grace in the lyrics, & a generally ‘peppy’ instrumental lean keeps the album from feeling too drab. My favorite one here is probably “April Skies”, just because I’m struck by the struggle between acknowledging an unhealthy love & the desire to maintain it. A lot of tracks in this genre just accept the unhealthy love & play around it, so to have a track treat it like the sort of ‘addiction’ it is & quitting it is a welcome change of pace. Ultimately, I just enjoyed everything here. It’s a consistently strong album, and while it might be a little one-note in its darker / depressed tones for some people, I think the album does a good job of making its modus operandi clear from the get-go, so I never minded it. The biggest knock I have against this album is some of the outros on its earliest tracks – it settles HARD into a “repeat one line a lot” structure, but it thankfully shakes that off after “Nine Million Rainy Days”. The biggest nitpick I have here is that the wall of sound on “Fall” is just a little overtuned; it would’ve been better if it naturally reached that peak by the end of the track. Regardless, I don’t think there’s a bad track here, and if my nitpicks / complaints boil down to personal taste, it’s probably a pretty good album. The higher rating on the site says as much. Hence, a 5, & I’m glad it's on the list.

love this album so much! don't love that it took me so long to get it but it's fine because i got april skies in april

J’aime beaucoup !

my new favorite old band

My first band did a cover of April Skies and I gave our perma offkey lead singer my double gatefold picture sleeve 7" of it to learn the lyrics. Never got it back. Still raging. Speaking of the singles, I sometimes wonder if the album would be even more perfect if they swapped out Down On Me, Fall and Cherry Came Too for the b-sides Kill Surf City, Everything Is Alright When You're Down and Happy Place? Maybe not, it might unbalance the feel of the thing and those songs made the first two singles feel like treasures of their own. Hence, my rage.

I really disliked their debut album, it was just too noisy. This is exactly what I thought was buried underneath all of that, and I loved it. Gloomy, moody, chill. 5/5

Great album. I never really listened to this band until I got their debut about 620 albums ago. Really dug that one, but I think I like this one more. 10 tracks at 36 minutes is in the Goldilocks zone for me. It's wild this is from 1987 because I listen to a lot of current music that's in the same vein. Listened through a few times. Great album.

What a one-two punch with Exodus this is! Totally different, from Jamaica to Scotland, but both showing the value of great songs brilliantly realised. JAMC are one of the fundamental pillars of the music I love, and this album is them at their finest. It barely lets up throughout, and manages to combine high level shimmer with noise, sludge, feedback and gothism. Why they aren't mentioned in the conversations of the true greats more is beyond me. Also, I saw this album performed live, when the band let us do some fundraising for charity at the gig, and it was outrageously well performed.

A foundational album. These are not songs, they are a blueprint for one of the most unique urban tribes from the 80s and 90s: the goths. Charming

Me encanta

Love it

This is my mfin JAM

2026.03.12

Shocking the group by giving this a 5. The whole album created an absolute vibe and I loved that it ended acoustically given the heavy filters in the guitars throughout the album. “April skies” was the highlight for me.

Loved it!!

This album is like the soundtrack to a coming of age movie. Really loved it.

Rating: 4.7/5 Short Review: They traded the wall of noise for naked melancholy and somehow got heavier. It is restrained, intimate, and quietly devastating. Every song feels like it is trying not to admit it still cares. Favorite Track: April Skies, because yearning should sound this clean and this wounded.

Love this album, so much I bought it again recently 🤩

so sweet to start the year with such beloved record 💗💗

I've must have listened to this album 5 times since it came up on rotation. Not high energy music (no workouts to this album), just beautiful songs and influential sounds.

Excellent album, not heard it recently- I think I might buy it today as it’s so good - one of the best albums from the 80s - reminds me of T Rex, but the gravel voice and manic guitars from the Reid brothers makes this album sensational 🎸

best record on the list

9,5/10 Highlights: Darklands Happy When It Rains Nine Million Rainy Days About You

9/10 Highlights Darklands Some Candy Talking

Full Disclosure: I love The Jesus and Mary Chain (this is their second album). This album brings back a flood of memories from high school, college, and MTV's alt program 120 minutes. Their signature sounds are mellow songs followed by songs with a wall of fuzz guitar. "Darklands", "Happy when it Rains", and "April Skies" are my favorites. For me, it's not my favorite album of theirs, but it's a great album and a good representation of the band. a perfect in-it's-time Alt Rock album of the late 80s. I will be curious what others think of them. my experience is either you love them, or you find them just "there". My favorite album of theirs is "Stoned and Dethroned" and my favorite song is "Just Like Honey".

Prior to this, I never heard of The Jesus and Mary Chain. I have to say this is one of the best albums I heard in a long time. This was right up my alley. It was top notch. I will probably download this entire album.

Awesome

I'm really struggling. I like this album more than Psychocandy, but can't deny that every song sounds the same (although I have a really sweet spot for April Skies and I'm Only Happy When it Rains). It would be a 4.5 but let's be generous today

First time listening to them. Pleasantly surprised by this album. Found out about them first when Death Cab sang about the JAMC in one of their songs and I looked them up. This is right up my alley and what I was hoping for when I started going through this list. 5/5

I thought this was really good. There are other albums I’ve rated lower that I liked more but I couldn’t say anything bad about this album.

ive not yet heard psychocandy (oops!), but its my understanding that this more commercially successful followup doesnt sound much like u would expect considering the pedigree. no longer in full shoegaze or noise pop mode, it settles for Merely being incredibly texturally involving , somewhat languid rock music. not sure how distinctive it is ultimately, or even how independently great the songs are, but i eat this stuff up, this was one of the best music stims ive had in ages...rainy, sleepy, soft as the pillow u hug in place of an actual person. i know everyone ultimately experiences composition Through timbre, but stuff like this makes me think that applies Even More to me than it does to most ppl lol, its just my flavor of autism. i know me liking this is probably not a guarantee ill like psychocandy, but fingers crossed! definitely filing this one in my memory

Yeah a lot of it sounds similar but I can't get enough

- I liked this one even more than I remembered! Jesus and Mary chain are always awesome, and this one is incredible.

Goth rock masterpiece.

wow, really loved this one. fuzzy, noisy, dark, and beautiful.

Noisy awesomeness.

nice and dreamy

I close my eyes and I am in a John Hughes movie and I love it.

Feels like I’m smoking a cigarette, walking through the city streets, staring down at oh my god that’s why they call it shoegaze.

There's something really hypnotic about this band to me, and I love it

Great album for anyone to ease their way into shoegaze. And you can hear the inspiration for so many other bands in the tracks, to the point where I thought I was hearing the other bands songs and not the JAMC song.

So many band I love directly owe much of their sound to this band and album. The mix of fuzz and noise with pop sensibilities is such a perfect combination and evokes such a warmth.

Good album sounds like it was made a decade after it was.

Pop art masterpiece

Really vibey, I liked it!

One of my favorite Jesus and the Mary Chain albums. I love every song. Easy 5 stars.

Loved this. I had always known this band exists, but never paid much attention to them. Great album. Will definitely listen again. 🤩🤩🤩

4.5 rounded up fire highlights: darklands, down on me, april skies (jan 15 2024)

A bit more accessible than Psychocandy and not quite as powerful - although still has Jim Reids gravelly voice and enough atmosphere to nudge a 5 for me.

JAMC play such a massive part in my music discovery. Psychocandy was a massive influence and in my top 10 important albums. This is equally as important. To me its a 5 star album just because of nostalgia. I played this non stop and i can still listen to it today and enjoy every single song

Indie 90's tranquilo oscuro.

Really good, easy to listen to 90s rock

pixies, evil twins, blonde redhead?

Do do do do do.

Yes yes yes kinda inaccessible and takes a few listens to unlock the majesty of this album! An absolute corker

This is a great way to channel montage moments even if you’re standing in your kitchen doing nothing!

Hell yeah I love the rain

The Jesus and Mary Chain was a band I overlooked in my youth. I was reintroduced, because of this list, with Psychocandy. Something clicked with that album, probably the heavy Lou Reed influence and I decided to take a deep dive into these guys. TJAMC are now one my favorite bands! This album is so refined compared to Psychocandy, but the different styles helps me appreciate these guys even more. Me and my wife will be seeing live in Detroit come October. Back to this album, I pretty much have most of this album downloaded and Happy When It Rains is right near the top of my favorites songs. These guys have a great sound, some wonderful lyrics that you could just put their entire library on and enjoy whatever you are doing. Beers on the porch in the summertime comes to mind! Not a bad song off the album and was really excited to see this on the list after a string of some mediocre albums. Looking forward to seeing live. 5

File this under bands I’ve heard of but didn’t know any of their music. Well that mistake has been rectified. This was great!

WTF älskar det här albumet!! Min mamma gillar gruppen sen innan men aldrig riktigt lyssnat.

listened on 07/08/25 whilst looking for jobs (3rd listen)

Love love love. A wonderfully weird mix of noise and melody, a precursor to shoegaze and dreampop, a front to back ethereal beautiful assault on the senses. Very much up my alley.

It took me a long time to fall in love with The Jesus and Mary Chain, and this album in particular. It's totally my era, but I don't recall knowing anyone who was in to the band back then. And I was listening to more prog rock style of music. So, no one to borrow the album from, so I didn't listen to it until I came across it via Spotify a ew years ago, And I love it. I don't know if I would have been open enough to it when I was 18 – it's the sort of thing I might have rejected as a teenager, because, frankly, teenagers know fuck all about what makes music great. I love the rock and roll style to this and have listened to it hundreds of times over the past few years. It's just got hooks to die for. One of my favourite albums.

I don't know what it is about TJAMC, but they make me happy. Always have

While I think I prefer the noisier sound of their first album, you can definitely tell that they have improved as song writers on this album. The songs are more complex and more atmospheric. This isn't my favorite album ever, but I will relisten to it at some point. 4.5

Just happened to get this on a rainy March morning. Fits the vibe just right.

I think I’ve heard of The Jesus And Mary Chain before but I’m not certain. I hope it’s not a bunch of nuns caterwauling because that would just be too much. I don’t think it is, but I’m really unsure if I’ve heard them before. Let’s listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: April Skies, Happy When It Rains I really am a sucker for vocalists who sound like they’re making no effort and don’t want to be there at all. This is exactly that, and it sounds delightful. This is 80’s alt, goth, something and it’s got all of the things you expect. Apathy is abound, yet the music is so tightly woven that they’re not fooling me. They cared about this and wanted it sounding great. And it does.

Great album.

Love this Album

Muito bom!!! Gostei bem mais do que esperava. Delicioso de ouvir!

Combine dark and light to create moody bliss - a dead simple but totally effective formula. A brooding reverby atmosphere pierced by bright melodic lead guitars playing simple major key melodies that soar over gloomy the distortion. Hit a big minor chord to kick off the bridge and release the tension back into a major by the end. The vocals seemingly straining their limits even in a pretty modest range make it somehow vulnerable and poignant. Contains one of only like 4 songs that get away with a 'do do do' chorus. A punk approach to loud stripped back musicianship combined with a pop melodic sensibility, an ear for richly layered guitar texture, unhurried songwriting and the patience to dwell in an atmospheric slow (maybe a bit too one-speed) zone make for a gem of gothy proto-shoegaze near perfection

Great album, not quite as good as Psychocandy but still great. No sure why they iliked to bang on about 'rain' so much.

Melodic romanticism with post-punk vibes? Now this is 80s music I can get behind!

this album is a nice foray into well-worn melancholy, like pulling out your box of old sweaters from the attic on that first crisp autumn morning. It's brooding and dismal at times, but earnest enough that I think it avoids overtly angsty melodrama. I'm a big fan of The Jesus and Mary Chain but hadn't listened to this album all the way through before, and I really enjoyed it! Favorite songs: Darklands, April Skies, Fall

Good stuff, love the guitar tone. April skies is a classic.

Just the perfect noise for my ears.

Great record! I love the mood it gets me in

My kind of alt rock. And it spurred me to listen to a bunch of other music from the era. Pure nostalgia bliss.

A great example of simple, no frills, amazing and influential stuff. So good.

Like the cure but sadder

Perfect droney guitar pop.

Beautiful melancholic shoe gaze. It's raw & emotional. This band reminds me that guitar is my favorite instrument & they're masters of their work. I adore JAMC, but I've never seen them live despite having the chance last year...I have a regretful feeling I'm never going to see them. Excellent album & band.

listened to this on a 4 hour bus ride. perfect road trip album. makes me wanna stare out of a window and ponder shit.

Rain: The Album. Mint.

Better than I expected, but not really my kind of thing. Happy when it rains is a cracking tune, and they get a wee extra 🌟 just for being Scottish! 4 🌟 => 5 🌟

Mellow, jangly guitars and nice vocals

perfect album

About You is *such* a good ending to this album. This is, IMHO, *way* better than Psychocandy. This one has aged like fine wine... It doesn't reveal all of its character on first listen, it's a very layered album that I don't feel like I've plumbed the depth of more than 20 years and dozens of listens after hearing it for the first time. So much goodness packed into 36 minutes! One of my top 5 albums of the 80s, easy 5/5.

Mesmerising sound, a bit monotonous but still a great album.

Very very good

It's difficult to rate records or bands that you already like. That being said this is a great record.

This album is really very very good! All the songs are excellent!

Already listened.

Meistarastykki

I might need to add this to my list of favorite bands. I have no idea why I never came across them before.

'Deep one perfect morning' seems a citation to Jesus wants me for a sunbeam, but they were published the same year, so who is citing who? Being Scottish, they certainly have a passion for rain and skies. The entire album is so good.

Me regustó

Better than Psychocandy and Automatic

idk yet

perfeito

I like this album. I already knew just like honey and love it. their sound is so cool and comforting and familiar. I like the noise and the feedback, it feels like main character music, i can see it in so many films. i like darklands, april skies. it just feels like you should be driving down pch at sunset with the windows down or at a party with your friends having drinks. I will definitely relisten and revisit. i want to give this a 5 so i will. :)

Love the JAMC! Distinctive sound, good lyrics, never gets old.

Great noise pop, love this genre, Psychocandy is better though and by a solid margin.

You know that scene in Killing Zoe where Eric Stoltz arrives in Paris the night before the heist and has a long night partying, eating pills and getting f'd up only to open his eyes and see his buddy being inappropriate with some other dude's rear end...? That's what this album sounds like.

Enjoyed, surprising 1988. Shoegaze.

Cant fault it

Love this album. Such good indie music.

Enfim um indie GOSTOSO

Indie 90's tranquilo oscuro

It’s good. Their guitar sound is second to none. Little monotonous.

A better record for sad sacks than the Smiths imo.

Really liked the title track and liked the rest enough to round up from 3.5.

Good but some of it kind of washed over me without making a big impact

Não conhecia, mas curti

4/5 Favorite Song: Happy When It Rains

Gloomy and full of melancholy. Honestly quite relaxing to listen to and to be introspective about your life.

Very good

Only song I ever heard before was April Skies, but the rest were pretty good too

Overall: 8/10 I wasn't a huge fan of the last Jesus and Mary Chain album I listened to, but a big issue with that one was the terrible production, which seems to be fixed on this album. It's atmospheric and very chill. Fav Song: Happy When It Rains

This was better than I expected

solid 90s

Really great shoe gaze album. I have Psychocandy, but had never heard this one all the way through. It was nice.

Love punk, some great songs in here. Doesn't transcend for me but very solid album.

As much as I enjoy The Jesus and Mary Chain, I believe that one of their albums is sufficient for this list. Their style remains consistent throughout their catalog and including two albums is redundant. "Psychocandy" is the better of the two. Skip this one and wait for it.

This took me by surprise. I didn't enjoy Psychocandy. Too much feedback. This was really fucking cool. Like movie star in a leather jacket, smoking cigarettes cool. Such a simple sound but that's the secret. Rock n roll should not be complicated.

very good but the expanded edition tracks are a waste of time

Nice to hear the tunes emerge from the noise, though it’s a clear step back from the bold vision of Psychocandy

I wish I'd have listened to this band when I first read about them in Record Mirror back in1985, but I probably wouldn't have given too much thought anyway - same with Cocteau Twins back then, it just wasn't a genre/style that I was that interested in. Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, and more synth was what I wanted back then. Appreciate this much more now - it was almost like discovering a new band a few years ago when I gave them more time.

Big fan of the shoegaze tone here - the atmosphere the album creates is really engaging and slightly dark, created by the instrumental work but also the haunting vocals. The only minor criticism I'd have is that the album does feel relatively one note, but that single note is really enjoyable and has made me want to listen to more of these guys. A solid 8/10 album for me.

Just a touch too young for TJAMC, but if I needed a soundtrack for my biopic (teenage years : stood moodily in a kitchen, drinking whisky, angry at the world for no real reason), this would be it.

#917. Pretty solid, I think. 4/5: good

Apparently time travel is real. Because I just spent 36 minutes being 17 years old again. My haircut was pretty stupid, but damn that was a sweet leather jacket. I think I may go do another 36.

Chill music

Love it very great i listened to these before but I must have had a headache or something

I’ve only really listened to this band in passing before. But I really enjoyed this album!

I really enjoyed this sort of gothic Pixies sound, although I appreciate that this pre-dated that band. This sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole as I thought the chorus of _Happy When It Rains_ really sounded like a Pixies song. That song was _Head On_ from _Trompe Le Monde_ which I subsequently found out is a cover of a JAMC song so now that whole piece all makes sense! So it seems like the Pixies might have been quite influenced by these and I'm glad they were because both of thise bands sound great!

I really like the album’s sound, especially the vocals. It’s not what I was listening to in 1987, but, gosh, I should’ve been. From this vantage point, I hear a bridge between the 80s music I loved *and* what followed. Good stuff!

Their second album and they’re still essentially playing the same song over and over and over again - this time with a drum machine! That being said, it is a pretty good song!

Loved itttt Was worried going in but honestly a great album!

Blast from the past. I found out that my girlfriend liked them. So we ended up listening to a couple of their albums yesterday

Tämähän oli ihan hyvää musaa! Kivaa Manchester-henkistä soundia. Onko tässä sitten jo vähän näytetty suuntaa sinnepäin?

My 2nd fave JAMC behind honeys dead.

The Good: This is the OG chain gang! The Bad: We are missing Joseph… or is that Josef? The Ugly: Trying to figure out why such luminary people would be spending time in the Darklands? I could have sworn that this was the second J&MC album I’ve listened to during this voyage… but it isn’t… As a matter of fact, I am still trying to figure out how frequently I have listened to this band in my life period… If you go by the sound of the album, the first thing that popped into my head was that I was listening to the soundtrack of a John Hughes movie. But then my head reminded me that there really weren’t any John Hughes movies which would use this kind of music in 1987… Which leads me to ponder whether John Hughes didn’t know what music to use after Pretty In Pink… Or, that J&MC are not trendsetters, instead they stole from bands such as Psychedelic Furs… Whatever may be the case… if you are in the mood for some downplayed ‘80s music, this is your poison. It is perfect for an afternoon of rain, or an evening during which you slowly start to drown yourself in a bottle of scotch… Also, shoegaze? WTF is shoegaze really? As this band has nothing to do with some of the shoegaze bands that I’ve had the displeasure of having to sit through on this journey… 4* because I can

I’ve heard the legend of the Jesus and Mary Chain (they were the loudest thing anyone had ever heard! Their gigs were literal riots!) but not a lot of their music. This was a lot more melodic than I was expecting - if someone had said they had tunes as well as feedback, I might have checked them out earlier.

Right up my street, probably the sort of music I'd try and write if I had a band.

I first discovered this band, going through my mom's old vinyls. She has their other album and I was intrigued by their unique sound; i do feel like this album is even better than the one I had already listened to.

Atmosphere is king Not goth, but not quite not goth A moody delight

Some great gloomy 80s alternative from a very Scottish band. I'm giving it four stars for April Skies alone, what an incredible track. Sometimes simpler is better, which a lot of this record exemplifies. I find Jim Reid's voice really soothing too

very fun instrumentals and indie rock sound

Scotland makes some awesome music. This was no exception and I enjoyed it all besides getting a bit bored the last couple of songs. It’s a quick listen yet its impact can be heard all over. I’ve enjoyed their music every time I’ve listened and think they’ve earned a deep dive into the rest of their stuff. Rating: 4.2

The wettest drum reverb you’ve ever heard. Followed by a barrage of distortion and a sneering attitude. It’s very up my street. Darklands is moody, melodic. I prefer their debut, but it’s a solid follow up. 4.0/5.0 Best Song: April Skies

Dark and cool. And 'cool' really is the correct term here. As in sunglasses and leather jacket cool. I wasn't that much into their previous album, as I felt the songwriting was just subpar and hidden behind all the fuzz and distortion. Here the songs are way better, so much so that the band doesn't feel the need to hide them anymore, while they retain some of the fuzzy sound that made them unique. Really good album and a fresh take on a genre that was getting kinda stale by the late 80's. Key tracks: Darklands Happy When It Rains April Skies

The Jesus and Mary Chain dim the lights and bring the volume down, clarifying that a cacophonous wall of sound was a cover-up for classic songwriting chops. Maybe everyone didn't know it yet and they needed Darklands to prove it to a wider audience of listeners, but it's a smart follow-up to Psychocandy. And yet, after all these years, maybe now we can admit that it's a little too tame? It's tough since I might not knock a more generally sedate band for this level of energy and noise, but I'll always prefer a more spice than this record offers, and with JAMC I know they can deliver it. I feel them holding back on this record in moments where I would've preferred them to let go into a darker, noisier darklands.

I equate this album to what it would feel like if I liked The Smiths. Likes: Darklands, Happy When It Rains, April Skies, On The Wall

Love the melodies, really enjoyable

Always great. You forget just how much of a 60s influence they have, but when the wash of feedback and squeal is toned down, like it is here, the songs really come into focus.

I like JAMC! don’t hate me!

Chilled Album. Liked the vibes.

I enjoyed Psychocandy when I listened to it last October, so I was looking forward to listening to Darklands today. For me, this is an even better album. Where Psychocandy was built around noise and attitude, Darklands feels more refined and melodic. The songwriting is stronger and more confident, with softer and more reflective lyrics sitting against that dark, slightly brooding guitar sound. It creates an interesting contrast. The tone feels tough and atmospheric, but the songs themselves are often sensitive and thoughtful. Happy When It Rains and Darklands are brilliant tracks, but the standout for me is April Skies. It has a fantastic melody and perfectly captures the mood of the album. If I had one criticism, it would be that musically some of the songs lean on very similar guitar sounds, so there are moments where they blur together slightly. Even so, the quality of the songwriting keeps it engaging throughout. Favourite song: April Skies Least favourite song: None. Every track deserves its place Album artwork: Cool cover that matches the moody feel of the record

i enjoyed this one. i favorited about half the songs but my absolute faves were nine million rainy days and fall. i wanted just the teensiest bit more of somethin from the other half of the tracks. very solid tho!

Cool dramatic 80s alt sound. I like this stuff personally.

Beautiful, melodic guitar driven post-punk fused with pop. Really stands the test of time and an album you can go back to again and again and hear new fresh things. Bubbling just under 5 stars for me, but an excellent 4 out of 5 stars.

This worked for me. Love that 80s echoey, driving sound. Happy When it Rains was a standout. High 4.

Very good '80s alternative rock. Lyrics and vocals really work well together.

Lots of piano and some very well organized pieces

Listening to this record, I can't believe I wasn't a huge fan in HS. TBH I only had passing familiarity with JMC, a few college radio singles here and there. Listening now, it's an excellent record and a clear influence on their immediate contemporaries and close followers, especially in shoegaze. Also notable, second band of Scots in a row, and this one is miles better than the last one

It’s a beautiful album that puts up a sonic front to hide their vulnerabilities. Really well done.

Awesome. Not quite as good as Psychohoney, but close. 7/10

I want to hear more from them, this was peak music to study math to

I've always been aware of The Jesus and Mary Chain through their singles on the radio, and I even saw them live once back in the 80s. But I've never listened to their albums until today. I absolutely loved Darklands. Brooding Scottish Goth-Pop! Perfect. Brothers Jim and William Reid literally invented shoegaze, for which we should be eternally grateful. I enjoyed it so much that I listened to some more of their albums afterwards. 'Honey's Dead' is fantastic. 4 stars for this one, not because it's not great but because I get more out of some of their other albums.

Like I wrote after hearing Physcocandy, they have great songs ruined by distortion, this is a million miles from that, was really surprised by how warm and uplifting this was, definitely adding this to my album list

JAMC cool.

I feel like this is a higher 3 than the last three albums I listened to (Raising Hell, Undertones and Autobahn), but I don't really want to give it a 4 either...I guess if I'm saying 3 is neutral, then I'm not neutral on this, so 4 it is. Does it matter? Are these the least interesting thoughts I could be punching into this thing? I feel like every social media nerd influencer that ever existed. I can only communicate my opinions on something through 5 numbers... I'm tired. Did I mention I'm tired? Woke up late this morning and almost missed driving my kid to the bus..

I actually loved this way more than I thought. Pretty chill for rock.

I love The Cure.

Stronger than the previous record of them I got here. Very heavily Joy Division and even Bowie-coded. Enjoyed a lot 4/5

It's simple and formulaic in some ways, especially with the drum machine, but at the same time it's got a great sound, very lush and dreamy. Overall a good listen.

Das war wirklich gut.

This was really cool. Kinda moody but still good energy. Which is a hard blend to achieve

highkey better than psychocandy

4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/the-jesus-and-mary-chain/darklands/ It's fine, but nothing mindblowing. Without the vacuum cleaner sound of Psychocandy, it's a bit more standard post-punk from the 80s.

Gosto do estilo dss guitarras, banda me agradou

Good album, although it does feel a bit samey at times. Dark and gloomy, a bit hypnotic, and very of its time. You can see where Bobby Gillespie took inspiration with Primal Scream.

I challenge you to name a better band from East Kilbride.

Teenage me would have loved this

3.7 faves: happy when it rains, april skies, some candy talking

This album sounds like a heavier, louder Smiths record. More accurately, it sounds like the Smiths discovered distortion pedals and chose to use them with aplomb. It's still a very hooky, accessible record with some very good songs on it underneath all the guitar distortion. Lyrics generally aren't too great, but the band is surprisingly musically solid for just having two members. All told, this is a good album that serves as my introduction to dream pop. Thankfully, it didn't forget the pop part of dream pop and made sure to have hooks beneath the reverb and detached vocals.

Early alt

90s indie to the core

I’ve been a fan of Psychocandy for a while now, but never explored the band much beyond that. This peels back most of the feedback and a good deal of noise (still plenty of fuzziness to be found) but holds their hazy, dreamy, poppy core. And there’s a lot of sweet melodies - vocal and guitar - and good songs to be found here.

Somewhere between The Cure and Pixies and my experience of this album is entirely coloured by hearing the others before this.

4.0 - Very Good

I think it’s objectively a 5 but I liked it a 4 amount

A real bummer because it doesn’t have the same nightmarish noise the other album on this list does. This is still good it just sorta blends in with the rest of new wave at the time.

Really enjoyed it - passed me by a little at the time - was familiar with April Skies, but that was about it - really good album

Very chill early 90s vibes

Got more into this than most other shoegaze I've listened to. Enjoyed it more as I listened too. 8ish

nothing super memorable, but i loved the vibe and overall it was pretty good.

Big fan of this album. Never heard of them before, but several songs that I loved and the overall sounds was great. Felt a little bit like late stage Dire Straits

Moody and catchy. I can fuck with this.

76/100. A solid alt rock record with some fantastic highs. It dials things down compared to their noisier debut, leaning into more melody and atmosphere. A dark, moody ride that mostly delivers.

I like The J and MC, but this wasn't my favorite. I prefer some of their other albums.

Still listen to this album frequently. Not my favorite J&M Chain album, but solid.

A very good album!! Def recommend

Great, already rated on my other account, 4 stars, could listen to on repeat all day.

very warm and quite sounding album

Good dark atmosphere

The generator has been blessing me recently. I've never listened to a full Jesus And Mary Chain album so this seems like a good place to start. Goth/shoegaze goodness. Favorite track: April Skies

Jesus this is good.

Enjoyed more than I expected to

Day 128 Second JAMC album off this list I’ve had and I definitely Preferred this one to psychocandy which I found too feedback heavy, some nice shoegaze here that I’ll return to. Highlights Happy when it rains April skies

8 / 10

This is the first shoegaze album I've enjoyed

I was not familiar with these guys. This was an interesting listen with some catchy hooks. It ages well as it does not just immediately scream the time period of its release. Will most likely revisit. 3.5/5

This was a nice end of week surprise. Always liked JAMC, and in my opinion they’ve always been underrated. But these lads deserve to be in the same conversation as similar leaning bands that get more attention like Joy Division, Psychedelic Furs and Echo and The Bunnymen. Shoegazer noise pop before it was cool. Very cool listen even 35+ years later.

This was good. Obviously the tones are distinctly 80’s, but felt like otherwise these songs could fit in a few alt rock eras. Nice surprise, rounding up.

I hadn’t really listened to these guesses but I liked it. A very nice surprise. Had that 80s vibe without being over the top 80s. 3.5 but I’ll round up because songs like April Skies and Happy When it Rains are too damn catchy.

This album was good. Just kind of exactly a spooky, indie rock album from the 90s. Kinda reminded me of if Twin Peaks was an album if that makes any sense at all

Honestly very good

Reminds me of the 90's, soft rock without being soft. Nice mix of acoustic and electric guitar, very melodic.

I've heard on them before, but never actually listened to anything of theirs. Which is a shame, because this album was really good, so good that I will probably end up moving towards a 5 star rating the more I listen to it!

These guys listened to a bit too much Cure, but honestly really good, for once a real good pull on this list. 7/10

4 out of 5. This is another band I've heard of but never heard their music, and I'm glad it's changed.

It was my first time hearing this band, and I was like, "Oh, another band from the UK," which almost made me uninterested in listening to them because of the previous UK band (post-Beatles) albums I’d heard on this list. But I was wrong.

Late 80s, post punk geniuses avoiding the sophomore slump to deliver the goods.

I was surprised at how many of these songs I knew even though I don't own this album. This has all the elements I love, dark, expressive and moody.

Album No. 0068 on my list. Interesting listen! I've heard of this album before, but never listened to it. I like its overall vibe, the shoegaze appeal, the drum-computer sound and the way both singers sing. My favorites were "Darklands", "Happy When It Rains", and "April Skies". Because of the overall sound, its 4/5 stars for me, although I have to say that it's a rather narrow decision. Might have been 3 stars only as well. 4/5 stars.

I don't usually listen to a lot of rock but this was a great listen!

I was a fan of this one, one of those bands that people have been telling me to listen to, only ever heard Psychocandy. I really enjoyed this one though. 7/10 Favorite Tracks: “Darklands” “Down on Me” “Cherry Came Too”

Me recordó a The smiths o The Cure. Buena vibra, cursi, fácil de escuchar.

Real good, love the shoegaze, I hadn’t heard this before but I can hear the foundation of their sound that they stretch out in later albums

Great album. One of my favs by the Jesus and Mary Chain.

Did not expect to like this album

First time hearing this and absolutely loved it. Moody, melodic, and beautifully atmospheric. A perfect blend of melancholy and pop sensibility—an excellent album.

Weird coincidence that this is my listen as there are multiple rain tracks and today was dreadfully rainy. Album was really good, loved the texture

A band always on the edge of my listening range. I was aware of them and they were popular in my circle but I never listened to them. Not sure why that was. Strong start with Darklands. As it drones on, I keep digging it. Shoegaze be damned, let me enjoy my morning mope. I'm going with **** here.

Solid jangle pop with some post punk influences with a sprinkle of shoegaze cool album to listen to while it's raining. Went away from their noisy debut to make an accessible pop album with interesting melodies with beautiful atmosphere. Lyrical content that touches some bases of longing, introspection, pessimism, romanticism that deliver a cerebral/ethereal response. Favorite tracks: Happy when it rains, Nineillion Rainy Days bleeding into April Skies, Fall and On the Wall Enjoyable experience 4/5

This is #day444 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… how about some fine Scottish noise pop? You bet. It totally slipped my mind that Bobby Gillespie played drums on their first album, which still awaits me down the road. Now, this record... what else to wish for when there are such gems as "Darklands," "Happy When It Rains," and "April Skies," to say the least. A great listen through and through. This is a 4 out of 5; sparing a 5 for Psychocandy. Looking forward to #day445.

Wow. Perfect for my today. Cloudy drizzly and lazy day. Begore today I knew the few songs that had radio play. Hearing this entire album today was perfect.

4/5 The sound to the overall thing ‘meshes’ a tad but it was listen 1 so I think that would change

I would vibe to this 3.5

Been put off exploring J&MC more after being disappointed by Psychocandy. This feels more poppy and fun though. The better album for me. Glad to listen.

Released in my birth year! Finally an album from 1987. I enjoyed this a lot, I was not familiar with Darklands and I only know Psychocandy, which I am not a massive fan of. This however feels a step up from that, there's some very good songs on here and the album is 36 minutes long. It had a gothy post-punky feel to it, that I really enjoyed. An excellent autumn record.

The album generator is stuck on UK albums this week which is kinda fun. I don’t think I’ve heard this Scottish group before. Seems their first album might not be my cup of tea, but this second one is off to a nice start! Feels like the perfect thing to listen to on a rainy morning like this. I’m adding this album to my library. 4/5

Really good first listen. I've always enjoyed listening to The Jesus And Mary Chain and could see this one growing on me a lot.

The album title an cover had me thinking that I was going to hate this shit but to my surprise, this album was a fun listen!

I like Jesus's and English indie music!!

Fín vinnutónlist, chill 80s

I really like this! Never heard it before today, but I could see myself listening to this regularly.

This was a pretty cool post punk and goth rock album for the ’80s. I remember their first album vaguely, but I do recall it being much hazier and drenched in feedback, almost bordering on shoegaze. This one feels a lot less chaotic in comparison, with more focus on atmosphere and melody. It’s definitely darker, with a more accessible sound overall. I think I probably still prefer their debut for its rawness, but this one is still good especially if you’re in the mood for something more toned down and moody.

The sound of Glasgow. God, what a great album.

*Darklands* [1987] One thing that kind of struck me listening to it this time isn't as much as that it sounds of his time, but it almost sounds like it was 2 years earlier. I kept hearing 1985 . I don't know if I caught that last time around. I don't know if I was thinking about what year it came out. I also kind of thought they resembled a little bit of the Psychedelic Furs, which is not really a knock, but just a notation. Still this was the kind of stuff I really ate up a lot back in the 80s . This sound actually really takes me back to what I really love to listen to with my friends back in high school so i might have some Gen X colored glasses on my rating. (8.85) ★★★★

I like this era of JAMC quite a bit, and think this is a fantastic album. They kind of take the 60's girl group aesthetic of the Ramones, but add this dreamy, surfy layer to it. I think this is the band's most consistent album, and there's a lot of highlights, including the title track, "Deep One Perfect Morning", "Happy When it Rains", and "April Skies". 4.5 stars.

Day618 - dark and moody just how i like it

Some really good alt rock a lot less noisy than their previous album but the dark atmosphere is really good here. 8/10 Favourite: Darklands Least Favourite: Cherry

me re gustó eee

That late 80s reverb-drenched sound isn't my favorites part of that decade, but these songs are good.

Surprisingly good. Never heard of them before. Added to playlist

"Down on Me" bijvoorbeeld vind ik best een leuk nummer, net als "Fall".

I had never heard of this band or this album but I liked it - seems ahead of its time in some way

Had not listened closely before - brooding rock that hits far more than it misses

Melodic and moody. Still a lot of interesting production ideas and textures, but not quite as adventurous or encompassing as ‘Psychocandy’. That being said, this represents some of the best of what the 80s pop sound could do for your rock and roll. It’s also well-written and kind of bleak, so obviously I dig it. I’d give this a 4.5 if I could.

Soft punk like Echo and the Bunnymen

Love this record and JAMC in general. Though I've heard this album dozens of times, I came to a realization on this latest listen: JAMC are kind of like Scotland's version of The Ramones. Similar attitude, vibe, effortless cool, musical vocabulary, delivery. JAMC slows those 60s pop melodies down while The Ramones speed them up. Just some food for though. 4/5

Knew the name but that’s about it. Another album that I’m glad I listened to…faith restored.

I may prefer Psychocandy or Automatic but this is still a pretty great album. Favorites: Happy When It Rains, April Skies Would I listen to it again: Yes

I loved it

Ach, herrlich.

This band rules.

Not bad at all. Shoegaze-core, a little noisy, all around pretty good.

I’ve listened to Psychocandy before. Is this one more upbeat or something? I have the loose thought that these guys are one of those bands where every song is kinda the same song (but it’s ok because it’s a good one). Did half the songs on this album have at least one element of Just Like Honey? Felt like it. Again, in a good way.

Beautiful and folky and rocky and good 80s/90s stuff

This album sets a powerful mood. It’s minimalistic, ambient, and ideal for rainy afternoons. I loved the stripped-back sound and its emotionally cold yet not hollow feel. However, it didn’t quite connect with my current mood. I can imagine revisiting it when I want to immerse myself in a quieter, darker mindset, but for now, it felt more like watching a storm than being in it.

## The Jesus and Mary Chain's *Darklands*: An In-Depth Review Released in 1987 as the follow-up to their landmark debut *Psychocandy*, **The Jesus and Mary Chain's *Darklands*** defied expectations by stripping away the chaotic feedback that defined their early sound. Instead, brothers Jim and William Reid crafted a brooding, melodic masterpiece that emphasized songwriting over noise. Reaching **#5 on the UK Albums Chart** , the album polarized fans but cemented the band's artistic evolution. Here’s a focused analysis: ### 🔍 1. **Lyrics: Vulnerability in the Shadows** *Darklands* trades *Psychocandy*'s youthful snarl for poetic despair and romantic fatalism. The Reids’ lyrics explore: - **Existential Dread**: The title track declares, *"As sure as life means nothing / And all things end in nothing"* , framing existence as a bleak pilgrimage. - **Twisted Romance**: Tracks like "About You" offer stark vulnerability (*"I’d break my back for you"* ), while "Cherry Came Too" juxtaposes love with violence (*"The trigger itch of the killer’s hand"* ). - **Gothic Imagery**: "Nine Million Rainy Days" merges apocalyptic weather with doomed devotion: *"All my time in Hell was spent with you"* . The writing is more exposed without feedback camouflage, revealing a **raw, literary depth** that influenced 1990s miserabilists like Morrissey and gothic rock. ### 🎸 2. **Music: From Noise to Minimalist Mastery** The album’s sonic shift was radical: - **Drum Machines Replaced Live Drums**: After Bobby Gillespie left to form Primal Scream, the Reids used a **Roland TR-707** . This created a mechanical backbone for tracks like "Happy When It Rains" and "April Skies," lending a cold, hypnotic pulse. - **Guitars: Clean, Not Caustic**: Feedback was largely abandoned for precise, ringing arpeggios ("Deep One Perfect Morning") and distorted-but-melodic riffs ("Down on Me"). The Velvet Underground’s influence is palpable in the minimalist grooves . - **Vocal Clarity**: Jim Reid’s deadpan baritone and William’s occasional leads (e.g., "Darklands") sit prominently in the mix, amplifying lyrical intimacy . Standouts like "April Skies" balance **motorik rhythms** with soaring choruses, while "Fall" offers a rare callback to *Psychocandy*’s noise. ### 🎛️ 3. **Production: Polished Yet Polarizing** Self-produced by William Reid with co-production from Bill Price (The Sex Pistols), the album’s studio approach sparked debate: - **Pros**: The crisp, reverb-light mix spotlighted the brothers’ songwriting. Subtle details—like the layered guitars on "On the Wall" or the haunting strings on the alternate "Darklands" —reveal meticulous craftsmanship. - **Cons**: Critics lambasted the **"cheesy ’80s drum machines"** , arguing they clashed with the organic guitar work. Others felt the cleaner sound sacrificed the band’s danger, calling it "lethargic" . Jim Reid later admitted the production was a deliberate risk: *"We didn’t want to make ‘Psychocandy II’... We held our nerve"* . ### ⚫ 4. **Themes: Alienation and Dark Romance** *Darklands* navigates: - **Isolation**: The title track’s narrator drifts through a desolate mental landscape, seeking meaning in a "world that keeps turning the screws" . - **Love as Curse**: Relationships are depicted as mutually destructive ("April Skies": *"I’m just your long-time curse"* ) or tragically fleeting ("About You"). - **Defiant Nihilism**: Tracks like "Happy When It Rains" weaponize apathy, masking despair with pop hooks. This **"minimalist miserablism"** resonated with outsiders, framing the Reids as existential poets in leather jackets. ### 📣 5. **Influence: Blueprint for Shoegaze and Beyond** Though less cited than *Psychocandy*, *Darklands*’ impact is profound: - **Shoegaze Prototype**: By merging drum machines with ethereal guitars, it preserved My Bloody Valentine’s textural experiments without obscuring melody . - **Career Longevity**: Proving the Reids could thrive beyond noise, it enabled their genre-hopping future (e.g., the electronic *Automatic*) . - **B-Sides as Art**: The era’s non-album singles (e.g., "Sidewalking") are now cult classics, showcasing the band’s freer creative side . ### ✔️ Pros & Cons at a Glance | **Pros** | **Cons** | |-----------------------------------|-----------------------------------| | **Songwriting maturity** - Hooks shine without feedback crutches | **Drum machine sound** - Dated, "John Hughes-esque" percussion | | **Lyrical depth** - Gothic romance and vulnerability | **Lacks *Psychocandy*’s innovation** - Feels like a "retreat" to some | | **Production risks** - Clean mix emphasizes vocal emotion | **Inconsistent energy** - Mid-tempo pacing drags on deeper cuts | | **Influence on alt-rock** - Paved way for shoegaze/dream pop | **Missed shoegaze potential** - "Buried" under restrained guitars | | **Expanded edition B-sides** - Essential tracks like "Sidewalking" | | ### 💎 Conclusion: A Divisive Masterpiece *Darklands* remains The Jesus and Mary Chain’s most polarizing work. Its departure from noise alienated fans craving *Psychocandy*’s chaos, yet its **emphasis on songcraft** revealed the Reids as timeless pop auteurs. The album’s fusion of mechanical rhythms, lyrical bleakness, and melodic clarity created a **proto-shoegaze landmark** that balanced accessibility with artistic rebellion. As Jim Reid noted, decades later, fans still flock to hear it live—*"job done"* . For those willing to wander its stark landscapes, *Darklands* is a testament to beauty born from restraint.

So good

dang, how have i never heard of these guys before. this is legit some pretty good proto-shoegaze and all that. I can see the influence that these guys had on a lot of music going forward.

Actually really digging this. It has a certain sound to it that I can't put my finger on, but sound familiar af. The vocals could be better no doubt but the instruments are very fuzzy and lush. Not my absolute favorite or anything but gonna put this one in the lower 4's.

This one was a pleasant surprise! I expected just another bland album that would leave me wondering why it’s on this list, but I have to admit I really enjoyed it. "Darklands" has a captivating sound that made me doze off into my weekend bliss. Definitely a solid listen that exceeded my expectations!
