Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Did this guy have a supporting role in A Mighty Wind? For the past 38 mins. I've been feeling like I'm living in that movie and it isn't as funny as I remember it being.

Knap gespeeld

Iets te folky naar mijn smaak

Kind of boring

Best Song: I Have No Time. Quiet and contemplative. Worst Song: Casbah. This, along with the other just random guitar strumming songs, felt like they provided nothing to the overall album. Overall: A short, sleepy album that feels like it wants to desperately live up to visions of Bob Dylan. It doesn't, and if you subtract the large number of unimpressive acoustics songs from this already short album, there's really not much left over.

ganska lame

Dum de dum de tiddly dum dum. Might sound better with a band.

Ok, nothing really caught my ear but there was some talent there

Great string work, however not something I particularly enjoyed. 2/5

Nice but not memorable

Some well written songs that were unfortunately overshadowed by the similar instrumental backing throughout. Became very monotonous very quickly.

Blues rock in a hobby shop.

Hey now I felt like I was kicking a cab down a dirt road and such. It was okay decent background sound.

Vond het nogal traag, niks aparts

It’s alright

Bert Jansch? More like Bert Snoozefest! 4/10

- Cool guitar work - Gives the vibes of sitting on the porch at night during a late summer evening - Songs sound very similar to each other - Appreciate the music but not for me

It's one of those albums I would listen to without paying any conscious attention to it just because it's comfortable.

Good acoustic guitar but kind of drab overall

Album didn't do anything for me but I definitely see why it's on this list. The last song though, "Angie" i really liked.

Not much about this album really resonated with me. I've never been big into folk music and this just didn't have much to keep me interested. I guess it makes sense that it influenced some iconic songwriters from the 60's and 70's, but I don't feel like this has withstood the test of time in the way of the music it might have inspired.

Similar to the city of Bert’s birth, Glasgow; visited once, wouldn’t go out of my way to visit again.

Fine for what it is, but it's a no for me.

Inte särskilt spännande.

Labong.

Not only was this album boring but I also had to miss watching the Australian open to listen to it. Sure it has an unpolished feel to it but that doesn’t make it any more fun to listen to when I could just listen to nick drake or bob dylan who are far better folk singer-songwriters

gaaaahhhh... mid-60s folk. Noooooo

miss any flavor in this album; every song feels like it's the same and while the lyrics are far from bad, the album just feels monotone

Nothing great. Annoying. I made it through. I am rounding up because it is better than 1 but not really a 2.

Ah I'm sorry Bert but this did nothing for me. Sure it was lovely folk really I just didn't care at all.

It was alright. It got better later on, but I was really irritated at the beginning.

Boring and very pretentious. It smells of sandals and poor hygiene. Why is this on this list and why to people like it. There are so many good singer songwriters with folk songs on this list, why is room created for something that lacks creativity, urgence and a heart?

De man met de gitaar. Lekker rustig in de ochtend op het werk. Maar niet een album dat ik zelf nog eens snel zou opzetten. Zeker niet de pingel-liedjes met weinig zang. **

Gick in i ena örat och ut ur andra.

boffff

When the first track started, I turned to Sylvia (we were in the car listening together) and said, "Nice, this guy can play." Third song... "Starting to feel like a case of the sameses. Not hearing a lot of diversity in the songwriting." Midway through the album... "Think he'll kick it up a notch before the end?" Somewhere past the mid-point, dude got excited and kicked it up a notch. "I think I liked it better when he was stuck in neutral." Near the end... "If I were to walk into Molly McGuire's (nondescript local faux Irish bar/restaurant), I'd be glad to hear this guy playing. But to craft an album with your fingerpicking guitar and voice, you've got to write some really exceptional material to make it interesting." This was not my experience with Bert Jansch.

Bert gets a B for effort C for creativity D for delightful meh

Kind of mediocre, there are a lot of solo acoustic folk singer albums from this time period and I don’t know what is supposed to elevate this one.

2.5 not my style, but not bad.

Vikaa biisiä laskematta aika tusinakamaa. Pari kertaa pyöräytin läpi ja molemmilla kerroilla vasta viimeinen biisi sai vangittua mielenkiinnon.

Jotain hyvää, mut enimmäkseen meh

This is almost the complete opposite of what I’m looking for in a CD, but it’s not outright bad. I like virtuosic, ambitious, exciting, and rich sound. Jansch has kind of a weak, thin voice, with limited range, and while he’s a fine guitar player, he doesn’t do anything that noteworthy there either. Those are the only two instruments. The songs are pretty standard blues-folk, and I’d say he was influential on that style except that it’s crazy old, way older than any other part of rock music. It’s not the least bit exciting- most of the songs are played at a reasonably fast clip, but with no big moments, no real surprises- it’s at a slapped-out 4/10 the entire time, he never really turns it on. And the CD has no instrumental variety, no depth of sound. There’s a reason bass and drums are on damn near every rock CD- they work, every time, and removing them comes at a massive cost.

Strolling down the highway- perfectly fine song Smokey mountain - instrumental, pleasant to listen to Oh how your love is strong - nothing stand out so far I have no time- feel like he's coming for somebody👍 Couple more instrumentals Needle of death- pretty blunt which l think is effective here👍 Do you hear me now - snoozy protest song Ramblings gonna be the death of me - God knows this song rambles enough Alice's wonderland - Nice instrumental Runnin from home - like lyrics, quite sad👍 Courting blues - kinda creepy Casbah - another instrumental, quite twangy Dreams of love- another simplistic song, again unremarkable Angie- end with another instrumental This really didn't grab my attention at all. Pleasant to listen to but not much else 2/5

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Not really, felt like there was too much filler and very little soul in a such a short album Favourite song: Track 9 - Rambling’s Gonna Be the Death of Me

60s folk, acoustic vibe.

Thought I was going to like this more than I did, outside of the 2 songs I already heard I couldn't get into it that much.

Could not get into this one. Some of the guitar work was really good, but overall was very forgettable.

2/5 naaah

Objectively this is a great album, you can hear it in the guitar playing, the lyricism and there’s loads of atmosphere. Subjectively though, my attention wavered after the first few songs, and the record as a whole mostly came across as earnest and preachy which is a turn off for me.

very forgettable

So from the cover I'm expecting a singer-song writer, maybe folksy. And ... yup. Also sounds like a one person show. Which means the songs are going to have to be pretty compelling. For some reason the second song, Smokey River is reminding me of Led Zeppelin. Maybe the intro to Stairway to Heaven? Anyway, I like it. The most compelling story is Needle of Death, you can tell he knows the "troubled young life" in question. But even that story didn't really grab me. Overall it was fine I guess.

not a fan, shouldn't be on this list. There are many others that surpass what he is trying to achieve here including Dylan, Drake, Simon & Garfunkle, etc etc.

Folk 60s amb un interessant treball de guitarres que hauria d'influir a generacions venideres d'artistes i unes lletres que parlaven a una generació

It's fine but kind of unmemorable.

So quiet...

It's like listening to someone tuning a guitar for 45 minutes. I understand that Jansch was an inspiration for Mike Oldfield and others, but that doesn't come across on this album. Tedious twiddling.

Seriously, why is this on this list? I guess it would be good if someone were actually playing this around a campfire, but as an album this sounds pretty half-arsed. Maybe with a backing band and some proper production this might be good. Also, it may have been good and influential in the 60s, but it doesn't feel like it has any sort of staying power to keep it worth listening for modern audiences. I guess the most interesting tracks for me were the instrumental ones. Jansch actually plays quite well when he focuses more on the guitar and gives it some spotlight. I guess that makes it a 2.5 instead of a 2, but I'm still rounding down.

lidt fesen bob dylansk

Skotsk folk, singer/songwriter, fuld akustisk guitar

Didn't love it. Felt like it was the 'llewyn davis' soundtrack but worse. Great Value Bob Dylan.

Fluff, not really enjoyable

Bargain Bin Bob Dylan? Certainly looks like it in the photo....and yep, sounds like it too...Good. Bert Jansch is the kind of guy that, had Iris Law been alive in the 60s, she would have dated. 🌼 And by alive in the 60s, I mean in her infancy. And by dated, I mean nonced to within an inch of her life by.

It's fine. I have a soft spot in my heart for 60s folk, but this was just kind of okay. Not super impressive. I think it could have benefited from a couple of more upbeat tracks or maybe another instrument or two every once and a while, but it tends to blend together mostly.

Inoffensive folk guitar

2.5 stars

I've heard this album a few times in the past. Possibly over 10 years ago. Opinion is the same. It's very niche folk, instrumentals are better than the vocal tracks and the last track Angie is an outstanding bit of acoustic guitar work but not enough to carry the whole album.

Skilled musician, boring music.

A beautiful album I'll never revisit.

As Homer Simpson said, boring!

The debut album from Scottish folk musician Bert Jansch. The music was peaceful and a joy to listen to because it didn't sound so mainstream, but it's not my type of music. Fun fact: This album was recorded on a reel-to-reel tape recorder at engineer Bill Leader's house and then sold to Transatlantic Records for £100. The album then went on to sell 150,000 copies.

Decent

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would, its like soft acoustic folk music. Thought I was gonna hate it. Prob worth a 2.5

Not interesting

I never heard this one before. It’s good , but not top 1000 in my mind.

chulo ns

Paar nice Instrumentals

Stellenweise ziemlich Pog Akustik Guitar Parts Aber sonst etwas zu ruhig und zu viel Folk

boring

I started off thinking this was ok but it didn't really keep my attention. Got a bit bored after a few songs.

Eh was OK, nothing too exciting

Meh..... Maybe Bert was da shit back then but now he be just background filler. I give him two and a half Ernie's

I really didn't like the music -- it all sounded the same to me -- but I feel bad about it this time because I feel like he was really talented at playing the instruments.

vaya rollo...

First two tracks are quite strong, the rest are not great. 3/10

Overall not my style of music. A couple pretty instrumental guitar songs but not a fan of the rest.

Good backgroundy stuff, but not my thing

Just boring. Sure, it's folksy and unoffensive, lyrics are interesting... but 15 songs in 40 minutes of the same tones and finger picking. It just sounds the same. Blah.

It was folk. It was ok.

Old timey-sounding folk music. Kinda nice, also boring

It's possibly the world's most boring album. Just invite a random middle-aged man in your basement, have him strum an acoustic guitar, and have him periodically mumble for nearly 40 minutes, and ta-da!; that's this album in a nutshell. Favorite Track: "Smokey River".

Way too twangy for my taste.

This was bad

I dont like country im so sorry

Sounded like one very long boring song.

I can’t believe I liked this the first time around. What was I thinking?

A few times during this journey I've said, "Oh Wow! How have I never heard of this?!" Not this time. I said, "No wonder Ive never heard of this!"

He thinks he is Bob Dylan but he is not.

Just dull

This is fucking woeful Dull, boring, bad

Like going to an art gallery of 1001 paintings and one of them's just a detailed sketch in a frame

The cringe vinyl bro who picks up a guitar after listening to free wheelin’ Bob Dylan one time. This is an actual war crime to have this and Aftermath in a 3 day stretch. Yet another fucking snooze fest. Sure, he’s a good picker but god damn this is so lame. It makes me appreciate the Dylan’s, The Nick Drakes, The Neil Youngs so much more. I genuinely felt like this was one 30 minute song. The lyrics on paper seem deep but I feel empty, hopeless, bored and not moved. AND NOT EVEN IN A GOOD TIMMY WAY.

I do not have much to say The guitar playing it is nices some songs have some great finger picking needle is the highlight for sure it is cool that it was recorded at home but I have no idea what the point of it being here is. In the grand scheme of things, I will never relisten to this. not for me but I enjoyed it. I just can't give it higher than a 1 it is a 2/10 imo

British folk. Yay. How could my night possibly get any worse after rating Bob Dylan? God only knows. I am sorry, but there is nothing more boring in this world than folk music to me. I would rather watch paint dry, grass grow, or the sun move across the sky all day long. I would rather listen to ten babies crying. Anything. Literally anything else rather than listen to British or American folk.

Too many white-guy-with-a-guitar albums on here. It’s starting to sound like white noise.

There’s probably a literal hundred blues albums that have better guitar playing & it’s not like this guy is singing about anything new or with any distinction. That said, liked some of the instrumental tracks, but I’d never put them on before like Skip James.

I wonder if any singer/songwriters have ever been either of those things?

Not much character to these songs. Just finger picking on a guitar, one song not much different than the next. Not bad at what he does, if you throw a Banjo in the mix here it would improve greatly.

so dull I cant remember what it was.

Bestimmt gut, aber nö

I have no opinion. It wasn’t for me though.

Boring. That is all.

I don't like folk

Just nothing fun going on here. Sounds like a karaoke night with mediocre acoustic guitar.

Needle of Death

Boring (1.5*)

I didn’t like it

This is the typical pre Dylan folk album of the 50s and early 60s. There is no youthful energy. The instrumentation is bare and the production is not the best. There are some okay songs here but these types of albums put me to sleep. I did enjoy Bert’s guitar playing. It is more intricate than most folk singers and especially so on the second side of this album. Overall it was a forgetful album that did not impress me much.

I'm not going to rationalize my opinion on this. I just hate it. From the first note. It's terrible.

Che borsa

Noticed the fence needed a bit of fixing. Must have been the wind.

wayyy not my vibe

Folk singer out of the 60’s. Never heard of him, or his music.

Poor man’s Nick Cave.

Strange choice. Very obscure. Doesn’t date too badly. But still, should this actually be on a list in 2024

Not for me

Sorry I can't leave a review im currently in a thousand year slumber because of how boring this was

Not memorable. Basically a “find another dylan”

Even for a 60's folk muppet this guy is terribly boring.

Not my cup of tea

Singer / songwriter stuff. Not for me.

bit boring

I'm just so incredibly bored while listening to this...I'm not sure how else to say it

It was Willie Nelson without the panache - why is this here?

Blind album and artist. This was very generic and bland to me across the board that I could not stand it. My loss I guess if I don't feel the same as others but this is just how I feel. Not good.

I've never heard of him, he seems country and folky, though, plus it's 1965 so it'll be slow and painful, I hope not. First song, sadly I was right, it's guitar playing only and I sense the countryness in it. It was monotonous and kind of boring too. Bob Dylan vibes, only worse. Idk how to rate a bad song, it's like 3/10, this is not my genre and I don't know how to appreciate it. Second song, it's faster, I like that. He loves long intros I suppose. Ohh this was instrumental, I like non-lyrical songs, so this gets a higher rating, I'd say 6/10. It was too same and literally nothing changed. Third song, I'm getting the vibe, guitar is interesting, his vocals are soft and scratchy too, not bad. This one has something in it, it's more catchy and less uninteresting. This wass 6.8/10 a little better than the songs before. 4th song, he's vocaling a lot, which is not his exact vibe I think, but it doesn't sound horrible so. I think I heard a voice crack. This was annoyingly bad, old folk is just not me, though the more I listen to it more normal it becomes and listenable, but something I'd listen to on purpose. 2/10. 5th song, interlude I suppose, it was guitar playing, which is in a way satisfying, but idk if it is special and I don't see it. Anyway 6th song is also an interlude, but longer, it's not even sad nor upbeat it's just guitar playing yk. I don't find this fun sadly. No rating for this one. 7th song, now this one is melancholic. I do like that it's not totally bad, just not my type. It's just very classic and I Bert isn't even doing this for the views obviously, which makes it better, he's just enjoying himself (I think). However, I do rate the albums, depending on if I would listen to them again, so it's gonna be a little low, the overall rating. This song had a different vibe in a way, but still same basicness. 8th song, short one, it's upbeat. I heard Björk's like growl, and before that a voice crack. It's just too boring, it's objectively good for its times, but I can honestly say I hate this genre in this time. 9th song, I'm not looking at the lyrics because I don't think they're gonna be a masterpiece, plus it doesn't matter to me. It sounds same as the other songs, neutrally upbeat. 10th song, another interlude, nothing much or unique. Not even smth I would listen to when studying. Name is interesting tho, not sure why is it named that. 11th song, his voice is different, maybe softer a little. I'm again not impressed, it's expected though. Don't even know what to talk, since it's just not my cup of tea, it's kinda pointless me just saying how I do not like it in different forms... 12th song, his humming while saying "na-na", he has never done that here. He's humming at the end too, otherwise everything else sounded same. 13th song, mm different chords. Only guitar is playing. 14th song is an interlude too, it's short, but he's singing in it. It's noon and I'm gonna fall asleep. 15th song, I thought this was rolling stone's Angie original version. Apparently not, notes are very different and chaosy too. He isn't singing yet, and never he sang. I'm happy I'm done with it I must say. Well I want to give this 2 stars, but for example Bob Dylan got 2 stars because of the way he used flute, it was magical in a way, everything else was bad(but I'm getting into him slowly). Thoughh Dion was worse than this, so I'm stuck about how to rate this. I thought and it's a 1 star album still, not influential to my taste at all.

Pretty boring

Not to my taste.

Ugh. Depressing. Boring. Don't want to hear again.

Oh no, not at all my style...made me cringe slightly. LOL!

Einschläfernder Folk

It just isn’t good. Doesn’t even have a nice old timey vibe to it

Not for me but i get it.

Did not like it at all.

This is a fantastic effort, an absolute masterpiece in making 38 minutes feel like 3, horribly long hours.

The grandfather of all the bed wetters with acoustic guitars. Dull AF.

Bert en zijn irritante kampvuurmuziek kunnen me gestolen worden.

1001 albums to bore you to death

Not my cup of tea.

This is not for me. It's like listening to a drunk hobo in an alley while you have a hangover.

Too folksy for my liking, that slow drawn out drawl for singing is not my cup of tea. There were some good guitar riffs and solos but really nothing to wow me at all. Best: Veronica Worst: Casbah

Folk crap

Nah all guitar strummy and a bit country, really didn't like

Frozen pizza. Store brand cereal. Day old donuts. When I was a kid (with the six years I had under my belt in 1965), we would taunt one another on the playground by one upping our fathers- Oh yeah, well my dad drives a tractor. So what, my dad’s a firefighter. And on it went until it was some poor kid’s turn whose father’s job was nothing to brag about, at which point the ace in the hole was played: Well, my dad could beat up your dad! And for some reason, and from that point on, that ‘dad’ became the standard. No offense intended at all towards Bert Jansch, a fine folk singer/songwriter in and for his time, but Bob Dylan just rendered you obsolete (as well as a lot of others). Anything you hear on this LP you may hear much deeper and fuller on any of Dylan’s first several recordings. My Dylan can beat up your Jansch. With one hand tied behind his back. (And, if you’re so inclined, contemplate the variety of meanings that illustration offers in a Dylan-esque way.) How is this a review of Bert, then, with all this Dylan talk? See, that’s the point. In a world where Dylan never existed, I’d give Bert a couple of stars, maybe three. Jansch’s acoustic guitar picking merits at least a star on its own. But for this listener, Dylan casts such a large shadow over his peers, all I can do is just gently, respectfully give it a single star and excuse myself from the table.

Awful. Like a first year dorm kid playing for smokes.

‘The record includes Jansch's best-known tune - "Needle of Death", which was inspired by the death of his friend, folk singer Buck Polly.’ Another cheery choon.

Very minimal Don't like the voice, lyrics, or music

Come back Bob Dylan - all is forgiven. Tripe.

Dumb 1/5

Quite dated even for folk and its age compared to other folk of the time. The accent annoyed me, very American. Also lyrics seemed very bland it tried to be political but he didn't seem to have a voice enough to say anything of note. 1 - terrible, can't stand any of the songs.

Nah I’m good

Man this was terrible

Good grief!!

Bored me.

Good thing this was remastered in 2015. I can clearly hear that I probably won't ever listen to this again.

my first 1 🥳🥳🥳

not my vibe a bit samey wouldn’t listen again

Ended up feeling like I was soldiering through this one- I'm not a huge fan of British folk it seems, and first Scottish band I've been disappointed on!

Does what it says on the tin. 60s era folk singer. Could see this influencing fleet foxes
