3.5/5
Grating, but in a good way? Seems like they were a bit of trailblazers for this particular kind of sound
Janes Addiction wasn’t grunge, but their sound was dirty in great ways. Dave Navarro shines on Ritual De Lo Habitual. Sounds like 1990 pot smelled.
Really good stuff.
3.9/5 2x some classics here
I have never been a Jane's Addiction fan, mostly because I don't like Perry's voice or his whole persona, and the lyrics never resonated, either. The music itself was, at one point, also not a style I was into. However, even though I was not historically a Navarro fan, I feel like this music does hold up better than I thought, and for the time it was released, I do find it pretty amazing. I wish the vocals were different, but that is a preference thing, and the popularity of a couple of these songs speak to how much influence this music has made.
It’s probably not a cool opinion, but it’s a good album. They’ve got an original sound, catchy songs and are able to keep you interested for the entire duration. A bit of a shitshow of a band, but that’s another story.
A pretty good album, I really liked Obvious, Three Days and ...Then She Did.
Gasssss
Speaking my truth: Jane’s Addiction rocks. Two great albums. That’s something. It’s also cool that Perry Farrell looks like Bruce Campbell in Escape from LA now. That makes Jane’s Addiction rock even more.
very good, not revolutionary ofc but very enjoyable
Great
Pretty rad! 4/5
I forgot I knew some of these songs, pretty nostalgic to listen to and so very 90s.
This album brings me back to freshman year of college. Played on repeat, I wore out the groove with the very crappy dorm stereo, the kind that didn't even have a counter-weight on the plastic tonearm.
Wow! Janes Addiction is on here Ive been through JA beforehand, but its been a long while. Love that we’re really in a 90s groove JA is like RHCP with a little less funk and little more punk. Gotta say, I love the explosive, way overdriven guitar. All over the place vocal melodies (sometimes rap, sometimes rock, sometimes metal). Love the stories behind this album - especially about the dog (Annie) fucking up the vocal tracks in the studio on Been Caught Stealing. Theres also a deep history with these guys having really unfortunate death happening around them at a young age. Crazy The front half of the album is really great. 4 stars there for sure. The second half heads too far off in a different direction for me to follow (everything after Been Caught Stealing). Then, Classic Girl really stitches it back together. Love the way the drums guide that song.
Great energy
This album was banned because of the cover. while tame by today's standards, the music on the inside is definitely not. Ritual de lo Habitual is such an edgy, loud, raw album it hits hard. Janes Addiction comes hard with an album that stands out in a sea of alternative music from this time period. 4/5
Jane's Addiction is a band I've heard a lot about, but had never listened to This was a good album. Loved the guitar. Only like 35 years late to the party 4 ⭐️
I mean - an absolute classic and journey through rock, punk, and fun.
Have never listened to this in one shot before -- and it's a heck of a lot better than I expected. Some of the heroin-laced instrumental breaks get a little tedious towards the end of the album, but all in all -- a solid four stars. Unexpected bangers: Three Days, Classic Girl
We have more influence on your children than you do.
Just over a year since Ritual De Lo Habitual was originally generated and the generator gives me another Jane’s Addiction album, Nothing’s Shocking. The whole time listening to Nothing’s Shocking I was remembering that I didn’t really enjoy Ritual De Lo Habitual all that much. I wasn’t really sure why because I was really enjoying everything I was hearing. I decided to have another listen of Ritual after finishing up with Nothing’s Shocking and I am surprised to find that I'm really enjoying it this time around. Jane’s Addiction seems to sit at a solid mid point of alternative music between metal and grunge. Plus there's a lot of interesting experimentation and bits of psychedelic music thrown in. I'm shocked that I didn't get on with this the first time around.
This was a pretty good one. I didn't expect to enjoy it that much. Maybe I had really bad preconceived notions about Jane's Addiction for some reason.
This album expands well beyond its hard rock/alt rock classification. Very layered, immersive production and creative instrumentation made this a fun listen.
Still a cool album. So unique for its time
Some pretty great jams. Been Caught Stealing is a classic that's hard to not smile to. And Three Days is an absolute banger.
3.5
I've liked a lot. Original. Surely influenced a lot of artists later.
Bom. Prefiro a segunda metade dele comparado a primeira. Poderia ser um pouco mais curto também. Salvei todas as músicas e não vejo a hora de pegar o outro álbum deles da lista. 4/5
I've never heard of these guys before but I really liked this album. I might check out more of their stuff
I'll save this one until I'm feeling more angry and rebellious
Will listen again!
Mostly love this!
Aggressively fun With tidbits of goofiness In grunge psych combo
I think that part of the fun of a band like Jane’s Addiction is the same as what I’d say for a band like The Beastie Boys: music aside, it sounds like the band are having loads of fun in the recording. This energy transfers into the listener, making it hard to not enjoy. Been Caught Stealing is such an absolute banger, and the rest of the album generally follows suit. Stop opens the album and sets the expectations very well.
Good.
I like this style, reminded me a lot of RHCP in the first half. A wild crazy punk funk sound. Could jam to it again
A little screamy, but quite developed, different songs, it grows on you
stop- 6 no ones leaving- 6 aint no right- 7 obvous- 7 been caught stealing- 8 or 9 three days- 8 then she did- 7 or 8 of course- 7 classic girl- 7
Stop and BCS are absolutely classics that sound so good to this day. The rest of the album is not quite as good but a lot of great stuff all over it.
It was exactly what I expected a Jane's Addiction album to sound like (having never listened to one before), but with a little more on top. It was cheesy as hell at times, of course, but it was fun.
first time hearing this album and I'm a bit bummed it took me this long. Every song so far (1-6) is rad. songs are great as well.
This is one I can't be very objective about, having listened to this album way too much in high school. I doubt I'd score it quite so high if I were new to it now, as there are a few skipable tracks on it, but I love the overall vibe and it's got a lot of strong content. It's still my favorite Jane's album.
Great album. Great songs. Love the music more than I love Perry’s unique voice though.
Better as an album than hearing an individual song on the radio.
Very much enjoyed. This is my genre.
Spoiler alert: they never say what Jane is addicted to
Didn't enjoy it as much as the debut, but was a very enjoyable listen. First half are just regular janes songs, but the second half is so much more emotional as a whole.
Jane's is one of those bands where each member is just so fucking good at what the do. A straight up classic.
3.9 - I liked the second half more than the first and some parts were really fucking cool
Been Caught Stealing is such a groove. The first half of the album is a bit middling for me, but from BCS onwards I'm more in. 3.7/5
This was one of the early rock albums I had growing up. I have a soft spot for it because of that. It's not an all time classic, but it was fun to spin it again today.
J’ai l’impression qu’on a déjà eu du Jane’s Addiction, mais si c’est le cas c’était pas aussi bon que ça
I like the sound of the album.
Good shit, good shit. Way better than Nothing's Shocking.
I had not listened to this album in its entirety in a very long time and it held up far better than I remembered. My favorites were "Stop", "Obvious", and "Been Caught Stealing". It gets a 4 for Casey Niccoli’s contributions even though perpetual asshole and narcissist Perry Farrel keeps trying to erase her from their history as well as steal royalties from his fellow band mates.
I really like "Been Caught Stealin'" so it was nice to hear the whole album - not as strong as I'd hoped, but not a bad listen.
Really enjoyed this one. There's a lot of interesting and good musicianship on this album.
4/5. This was a great album. It created a nice balance between heavy rock and progressive rock that scratched that perfect itch for me. I will say it may take another listen to get through the second half that does falter a bit. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece but it does showcase some great musicianship and songwriting. Enjoyed both Jane albums on this list, think I might have to dig some more of their discography later. Best Song: Been Caught Stealing, Stop!, Three Days
There's days when I love this album and there's days where I'm less than enthusiastic about it and it's all about Perry Farrell's vocals. Some days his voice just grates on my brain.
It's fine
3.5
The first half of *Ritual Lo Habitual* is good... If the second half followed suit, probably a moderate to sting 3½. But the second side is Sofa King good! I gonna slide this as an ultra high four (8.85) ★★★★
Fine alternative rock. I especially like some of the longer tracks, in particular "Three Days". 4 stars
Really good album. Flow is weird with all the longer spacier songs in the back. 4 stars.
Not that huge a fan of Perry Farrell’s vocals, it can have the effect of a long jet of skunk spray over a song but this is actually a pretty groovy rock album with constantly excellent guitar and really improves with the longer trippier, more drawn out songs towards the end.
I enjoyed this at the time. And I enjoy it now. Been caught stealing is a great single and the rest of the album holds up. 4 stars and yes a must listen.
Shoutout to Jane (no remover) and her addiction. Favourite Songs: Stop!, No One's Leaving, Been Caught Stealing, Then She Did... . Least Favourite Songs: Ain't No Right, Of Course.
Killer intro track diving straight into it. The track after it I personally couldn't vibe with it too well but every song after it is at minimum good. The last four songs on here really showcases Perry Farrell's artistry to a tee. The passion, the raw emotions delving into his grief, that solemnness, and everything in between. Top 3 Favorites: Been Caught Stealing, Three Days, and Then She Did... Only less than good song is No One's Leaving (calling bad would be a little too harsh imo) only because it heavily reminds me of RHCP and it brings my mood down a bit. 4.00/5
I had this album growing up. It's pretty good, but the strength is in the few singles that came from the album.
Best wel good
Sigh. I got the odd luck of seeing Perry’s last semi-coherent outing with Jane’s this summer (2024) and these songs resonate with me more than I thought they would given that I’m more familiar with the other albums. So pure in a weird, dirty way.
Bass is fire through this whole album
I liked it quite a bit. A few of the songs brought it down but overall very good
this has all the originality and creativity i was hoping for in skunk anansie. fresh and feeling
Better than I was expecting
Pretty rockin!
I think the power in this record is that it sounds like a band at its peak relationship with the songs. They know what they want to achieve but they aren't stale yet. And that has been captured live in the studio for the most part. I also like how odd Perry Farrell's voice is and how it has been processed. I like how it sounds like they've taken lots of different rock music as reference points and not so much blended them as hit the pulse button a couple of times. Lyrically it's more of a mixed bag. A classic 'girl' giving a 'MAN' a great idea is a bit of a clanger. But the one that always makes me chuckle is him being so chuffed at having a threesome he declares himself 'Erotic Jesus'.
Good album.
Fairly decent; I can imagine listening to this in the car on the way to seeing Terminator 2. If I lived in LA or something.
Pretty good
Ritual De Lo Habitual is the second studio album from Jane's Addiction, and the band's most commercially successful album. The album includes a few of the band biggest singles, like "Stop" and "Been Caught Stealing." Jane's Addiction combined metal guitars with punk sensibilities into a immersive, expansive sound. Perry Ferrell's brash confidence matches the raw energy of Dave Navarro's ripping guitars. This album is more produced - closer to pop singles - than their first album, and almost recreates the energy of that debut.
4.25
Ritual De Lo Habitual - Jane's Addiction (1990) Uma boa surpresa. Melhores músicas: Stop!, Ain't No Right, Been Caught Stealing, Three Days, Of Course. Piores músicas: N/A 3.5/5
# Playlist Track - Been caught stealing # Notes - First half of the album is VERY good! - Even the child voice announcing the opening is well executed leading up to a very interesting first track. - Last few tracks are okay-ish ballads, at best.
Listened Before? Y This is a quintessential 90's alternative album. Highly influential and well done. Big fan of this one. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Stop!
Still rocking, still original
Stop is probably the best song but lesser known than Been Caught Stealing.
Janes addiction Good band. And I like this album better than the other one we had. I love been Caught Stealing and Stop! The rest of the album is cool. I like some of the more psychedelics and experimental moments. I liked “And then she did”… cool piano and synths. Lost me a bit by “of course”. Maybe one too many long vibey songs towards the end of the album. 4
Pretty cool record, found myself losing interest periodically but kinda liked it. 3.5
Really cool. I liked how weird it got without straying too much.
I really loved this. The album felt connected to a lot of the post-rock from 10 years later in a way I was not expecting. The song "Three Days" could have been its own EP, not in a bad way. Unexpected 4.5
Some decent rock ! Maybe just the novelty of some really good rock for a change 4*
Really fun and a great representation of this era.
Dece
I had heard of Jane’s addiction but didn’t know any of their music. It had kind of a YES feel…but harder rock. I can see listening to this album again and thinking that it will definitely grow on me. It definitely gets a thumbs up.
Album 438 of 1001 Jane's Addiction - Ritual De Lo Habitual Rating : 3.75 / 5 Favorite Track : Been Caught Stealing I like some Jane's Addiction. This wouldn't be my favorite from them but still a good listen.
Thought this was good high energy music.
Good album - I like this. It's between prog, rock, alternative and metal -> cool.
The singles are the obvious stand outs, but the overall sound of the album, especially the later half, holds up.
Doesn't hit me as hard as the first album, but still very good. 3.5/5
This album really strengthened in the latter half. "Three Days" is probably my favorite track.
I would wear out the A-side of this album, if I had it, but the second half is lacking the energy that makes this group so good.
Great Album. A nice bridge between hairbands and alternative without giving up the guitar solos. Plenty of weirdness to make it edgy but still fun. Three Days is a massive ride iyw
This was a real surprise. I expected the usual metal junk, but this was anything but. Never heard of the band before, but this album is, I'm surprised to say that, quite remarkable.
Funky
This sort of felt like 2 separate albums put together, and honestly I really don’t like when bands do that. That being said, both parts of this album are really good. I definitely preferred the first half, but also appreciated the melancholy sounds of the latter half. This is probably a 3.5 for me, but I’m rounding up because I absolutely love “Been Caught Stealing.”
A classic.
The singer sounds like if the St. Anger snare was a person. Don't know how to describe it better. Just had "Hounds of Love" yesterday, so this is now the second album in a row that's divided into two parts - a safer first half, and an experimental/progressive second half with an overarching concept. Second half's the clear winner for me. One second you're listening to bland funk metal, then they suddenly throw a 10-minute long prog epic at you. Good shit.
Great psych alt metal that works better on repeated listens
The most annoying album I’ve given four stars to.
This is great.
My favorite red light/green light song kicks this one off. The hits are great and the rest is decent
It's pretty good. Good and loud - which really is distracting to me these days.... still has some 'bangers' as they say... 3.5
It was a pretty interesting listen for sure
If you spent any time around a college campus in the 90s, then you've probably heard this album. I liked it this time around more than I remembered. It was probably just a bit overplayed in my youth.
The sound of being both influenced and influential
fun fun
Very familiar with Jane's Addiction but somehow never gave this album a listen. I like it a lot.
I have not listened to this band before, but I have friends that are fans of them. I expected it to be a harder and heavier sound, but it was not. I enjoyed the differences between the songs, as it wasn't always the same.
Jane’s Addiction were certainly one of the major players in the emerging alt-rock scene of the early 1990s. Some observers consider Perry Farrell to be the Godfather of alternative rock.1 Others label the band as alt-metal or funk metal. Regardless of whatever subgenre one considers Jane’s this record is great rock music. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-ritual-de-lo-habitual?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
I had a small phase where I really liked JA around the release of Kettle Whistle (that live version of Jane Says is top notch) but when I finally got around to their 2 real albums I was a little over them and wasn't too into them. Going back to this one probably 20 years after finally checking it out has made me appreciate it a bit more. I still think Stop Is overrated but Three Days is epic. Been Caught Stealing will always be a fun song. A generous 4. I may not have ever truly loved the studio albums, but oddly enough this band got me into other stuff that I liked better. So that's something.
Definitely an evolution from "Nothing's Shocking". I appreciate what they did with this record, but it's definitely one you have to sit with, especially the latter half of the record being very morbid. Plays like a heftier Chili Peppers or more rabid, psychedelic Zeppelin. Favorite tracks: "Stop!", "Then She Did...", "Of Course"
4.5 Amazing band with one of the most iconic and distinct voices in rock music, one that you either love or hate (a lot like The Smashing Pumpkins in that regard). While I’ve always been a Jane’s Addiction fan and owned all their albums in high school (even the reunion album Strays which I’ll still defend to this day), I feel like they’re a band that has grown on me more with age. A large part of that likely has to do with the fact that I’ve now had the privilege of seeing the group live twice in Los Angeles, and man, let me tell you, do they still put on a kick-ass show. Perry Farrell still sounds as great as he does on the albums, and the band still goes as about as hard as I can imagine they did at their peak, even to the point of having strippers dance onstage with them (one of which is Farrell’s 49-year old wife who apparently has done so at every show since 1997). That all to say, go see this band live if you can. That also to say, seeing this band live is what helped elevate this album for me. While I’ve always loved Nothing’s Shocking, I didn’t used to “get” Ritual de lo Habitual outside of the hits Stop and Been Caught Stealing (which are two songs I still love to this day). And truth be told, I still don’t love the stretch of songs from No One’s Leaving to Obvious (although the echo thing on the latter is kind of cool), but I’ve finally come to realize it’s the back half of this album that really elevates it, the suite of Three Days to Classic Girl, four songs that thematically connect the death Perry Farrell’s girlfriend from drug overdose to the suicide of his own mother when he was young. It’s the most experimental the group has ever gotten, and it took me years to appreciate it, but sitting here now, it may very well be the band’s finest moment, with Three Days in particular quite possibly being my all-time favorite song by them. And I think seeing it live is what caused me to finally recognize that - it’s apparently a staple of the band’s live set (all ten minutes of it), and it’s easily been the highlight of the show both times I’ve seen it. I honestly think it’s bound to make a Jane’s fan out of anyone (though Ted Just Admit It… is amazing live as well). There aren’t a ton of ten-minute songs out there that I think I could listen to repeatedly, but Three Days is definitely one of them - and that’s not even to mention the other three songs that round out the album. While not quite as strong as Three Days (but hell, what is), I find them all to be so interestingly composed and unique that the ride to the end of this thing is an absolute blast. Classic Girl is a perfect track to close the album, though there’s something I found so incredibly powerful about the closing lyrics of Then She Did… “And will you say hello to my mom? Will you pay a visit to her? She was an artist, just as you were I'd have introduced you to her She would take me out on Sundays We'd go laughing through the garbage She repaired legs like a doctor On the kitchen chairs we sat on She was unhappy, just as you were Unhappy, just as you were Unhappy, just as you were Unhappy, just as you were” To summarize, Jane’s Addiction fucking rules. A part of me wants to pull the 5 on this, but I just can’t quite convince myself of it being that I don’t love three of the songs here (though they’re still pretty decent). That also happens to be roughly the same opinion I have of Nothing’s Shocking - spoilers if we have that in the future, but I find it to be a near-perfect album with two skips Standing in the Shower… Thinking and Idiots Rule. But who knows, given that my love of the band has just kept growing over the years, maybe these will both end up as 5s one day in my book.
Solid 90s vibe. Bizarre lyrics. Really great music though. Definitely a win.
Guitar driven energy, strong collection of sound
banger central
First half of the album is great fun, then the second half gets heavy in the subject matter.
There have been very few times where I have been thrown off by music. But when it does, I would consider it a welcome surprise. It shows that the album actually had something going for itself. I really wasn’t familiar with Jane's Addiction in any capacity before this, but through this first listen, I have become both confused and very intrigued. From beginning to end, this is an incredibly unique and out there album. And I kind of have a love-hate relationship with it. Initially I wasn’t impressed by this sound. But it definitely grew on me as I heard each song. The vocalist is what really threw me off the most. I had to use Google to see whether he was a girl or not. His voice is just so young and high, that I was shocked. But that energetic youthfulness of it made the album more enjoyable in some places. And the songwriting feels unconventional in all of the worst possible ways and best possible ways. The best song is Three Days, which is also the longest, because it allows them to flex their abilities the most. I’ve said many times before that longer songs, when done well, are always beneficial to an artist in realizing their vision the best. I don’t like every song, but there are moments that feel like TNT exploding in my head, and I can’t help but admire the willingness to experiment. Rating: 7/10
Bark bark bark!
8/10 - 4/5 Stellar bass. Very funky and creative lines. Overall, really clever album. It was really varied. I like these styles of voices more on straight up pop punk stuff, but it fit here. Great energy throughout, and cool pushing of boundaries.
Distilled essence of 90s. Good stuff though - I enjoyed this back then, and it still holds up.
This album is good, but it has never really clicked with me. I think Stop, Been Caught Stealing, and Three Days are Great, everything else is just good/ok. I don't know what it is, but it feels like something is missing from Nothing Shocking. If everything on this was as consistent as Been Caught Stealing, this would probably be one of my favorite albums. Still a good album though
Stop is fast-paced and super fun, ditto to Been Caught Stealing, and Three Days is very impressive and proggy. None of the other songs really stood out to me as particularly great or bad. Solid 4.
4/5
For me, the real beginning of the 90’s rock renaissance began with Jane’s Addiction, not Nirvana. Jane’s still feel fresh, raw, real, and very cool. The groove on Been Caught Stealing is blissful and very clearly inspired “ I Am One”, the first song on Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘Gish’ in 1991, another album that could be described as being fresh, raw, real, and still very cool. This album pointed the way forward in its time, and has aged really well. There was truly something special going on in Rock music between 1988 and 1991!
I must have had Jane's Addiction confused for another band or something, that was a lot of fun. Liked it even better than the songs I remember hearing on the radio. Almost a 5.
Good shit for sure. Catchy, energetic, fun. Love me some JA.
Good stuff! I already knew been caught stealing but I enjoyed this whole album.
Dosta dobro
I generally enjoy Jane's Addiction, but it is one of those bands where you have to get past the voice. The instrumentals in this one are great though. On second listen through, I got past the voice and upped my rating.
With the fury of the flame and the vision that spanned so many miles that it's hard to fathom, Jane's Addiction delivered their often sprawling yet wholly stimulating masterpiece that is ultimately defined by the epics placed towards the middle and end. A signpost that signaled the start and end of something special, Ritual de lo Habitual is filled to the brim with convincing passion and ambition that put the majority of their peers to shame. Sex, drugs and rock and roll is all the brain and body needs. Favorites: Stop, No One Leaving, Been Caught Stealing, Three Days, Then She Did..., Of Course.
I remember hearing "Been Caught Stealing" early on in my childhood quest to discover rock and roll. Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro were absolute rockstars in the 90's. I didn't know many of these songs; some were borderline "meh" but I love the energy, big-ass-basslines, and driving guitar work. The second half of the album has a real "jam band" feel, with 8- or 10-minute songs and plenty of solid musicianship. I get a lot of Iggy Pop and Bowie vibes throughout.
I remember buying this on cassette back when it came out. I had gotten the "First Amendment" cover. The first side are shorter hard rock songs unrelated to each other, and even with more songs than the other side, there was still a lot of space, which at the time I didn't think much of it. Opens up with "Stop," which is such a balls to the wall rocker. That sealed the deal for me about them. I played that first song over and over so many times. I always liked the start and stop of that one. "No One's Leaving" and "Ain't No Right" are almost as good. The bass works so well with Navarro in both of these. Looking at the first side, the weakest song for me was always "Obvious". I always felt this song was like "hey, there's a piano in the studio, let's mess around with it during the song." And the ending is so poorly done, like the band had no idea who was ending the song. If it sounded any worse, it'd sound like a bunch of drunks playing it. Then there's "the song." Their biggest hit. It's almost unlike any other song they have ever played, with the clapping and Farrell's scat-singing. It seems so difference from everything else, of course it becomes their first big hit. The songs on the other side are, of course, interconnected. "Of Course" is the weakest song for me on this side. The "la la" of Farrell just do not work. I feel that song has lyrics that are a bit more improvisational. I think of it similar to Jon Anderson's method of lyrics, a bit more sing-songy. I would say this is as good an album as they got to, and it hits pretty hard. It's just two of the songs are a bit clunky for me. They just bring it down from 5-stars to 4 for me. Top songs: "Stop!" "Then She Did..." "Been Caught Stealing."
The first 5 songs, nicely book-ended by the well known Stop and Been Caught Stealing are spastic and full of energy; they really rock. Even before it was a thing, grunge at it's finest. Or so I thought. But then whoa, the last four songs. Jane's Addiction showed they can really play. And the lyrics and music are so much darker or deeper - just a bit tortured. That is truly grunge at its finest. Three Days is a soaring epic, with lots of great Navarro guitar work but also great bass lines from Avery. 11 minutes and you wouldn't even know it. Of Course is a cool improvisation of the Klezmer style. Farrell showed he could really compose great songs. This album is a step up from their first album but I can't go all the way to 5 stars. But part of me felt like going there.
This is one of the most creative and adventurous bands in rock, certainly of their time. Jane's Addiction is funky and freewheeling in all the best ways, with a bohemian vibe straight out of Zeppelin. There are some powerful tracks here, among the most memorable of the 90s, as well as some solid deep cuts. Fave Songs: Been Caught Stealing, Three Days, Stop!, Then She Did..., Classic Girl
A lot of really good songs on here. You find yourself getting secretly pumped up as each song builds to a crescendo. Very inventive and unique sound, but some of the experiments are too far out there which takes this down a bit. Still a great album
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Been caught stealing
It should technically be a 3. But it's special to me. It's a 4 for me.
Juana’s Addiction
Highlight: Three Days
Never heard the entire album before, just played the cr out of "Been Caught Stealing" which is always been. fav. Surprisingly good all around. Def 90s but nothing wrong with that!
Two parts make this album: The first half is solid hard rock and the second half more progressive (musically as well as lyrically). I like the second one more! Recommendation for all music fans.
Really liked it! Of Course, Ain't no right, been caught stealing
Hyvä energia. Piti pari kertaa kuunnella eikä tarvinnu pettyy. Liian vähän tulee kuunneltua tätä orkkaa
Never really into it when younger.... but very listenable
I've bee sleeping on Jane's Addiction too long. Such cool sound. Vibrant and rebellious but interesting and pretty at times.
I had forgotten how good this album is. In my mind Nothing's Shocking was far and away their best, despite Ritual having the big hit, but this is some great stuff. Been Caught Stealing is popular for a reason, but the real showstopper here is Three Days. Wow....I love it. Janes was special because while the other alt rock, punk inspired bands of their era were rejecting the excesses of 70s classic rock and 80s metal, they fully embraced it. Great riffs, epic songs, guitar solos, a rock star lead singer, etc...alternative bands weren't supposed to have these things. I LOVED these guys back in the day, and it was nice being reminded why.
Never listened to these guys before. I thought they’d be like goth/metal, but they’re really more of a funk/alt band. Kinda remind me of a heavier Red Hot Chili Peppers. The lead singer’s voice is dope. Cool record.
I actually discovered Jane's Addiction on here with their first album, which I immediately regretted rating 3* as it grew into one of my favourite albums I've heard in a while. Their second is not as good admittedly, but still sounds pretty strong. Between the two album there's 10 or so unbelievable tracks. I can't not rate this a 4 to make up for Nothings Shocking.
Rough and ready, abrasive and slightly funky. Good stuff
Alternative before there was alternative! Great album and band that paved the way for future artists that didn’t want to follow the norm.
Welcome to the nineties! This is the alt rock music you’re going to hear throughout the decade! Incomprehensible lyrics, extended riffs, heavy-in-the-mix bass and some quiet/loud/quiet thrown in there. This is kind of fun, if a little of its time but the formulas all there and tracks like Been Caught Stealing are infectious and entertaining.
Awesome. Rating: 4.5
I was kind of surprised by this one, it says it was a metal album but it kind of feels more like a slightly heavier alternative album, especially with regards to some of the lyrics which is right up my street. Good listen, the second half of the album having the longer songs really was something else. Stand out songs: - Stop - Then She Did - Of Course
Rock alternativo, funk-metal. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Rock alternativo, funk-metal. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
I was all ready to rate this as average, Been Caught Stealing and some other tracks basically. And while yes, that is the obvious stand out, and the first 3 tracks are good if nothing special, Obvious first caught my ear, and then Three Days is a definite building banger. As is Then She Did, in a low key way. I love a long song that actually does something with the time. All of the second side is very good. Rated the earlier JA a 4 and I think I enjoyed this one a little more.
I’m a big Janes fan so I knew this would be a good one! Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: Stop
Day 114 I have this on CD somewhere; I also have Nothing's Shocking. For some reason this was the one I listened to the least, and I just recently realized how wrong I was: Ritual de lo Habitual is the more expansive and possibly the most accomplished of the two, but it is also the most difficult. While the first two tracks, Stop and No One's Leaving are classic Jane's Addiction, the reggae elements of Ain't No Right and Obvious really came out as a surprise. But things get really interesting by Three Days and Then She Did, two long psychedelic suits full of twists and turns, while Of Course results in a come down with violins. Definitely an album worth of your attention.
Brill. Nuff said.
Enjoyed this one.
Thought I would hate this but it’s actually pretty good
Very engaging lyrics and powerful, varied musical accompaniment.
Pretty solid album. I love the energy and unique sound.
I love Strays, this one less so but still good
I wasn't exactly looking forward to this one — I figured Perry Farrell would wear thin real quick. And granted, he's not my favorite vocalist, but I've got to hand it to the band. They have such a distinct sound — I can't think of any band they sound like or who sounds like them after all these years, and that's pretty impressive. The musical elements are tight and interesting, and Farrell's doubled vocal style — or whatever the hell is going on — is pretty formidable when everything's firing. Not all the songs were excellent, but the excellent ones are exceptional and distinctive. I enjoyed this less than a 4-star, but I've got to give it to the band for staking a claim on their own ground.
Pretty good rock
Above average classic 90s rock.
Fun, energetic hard rock
Great, I'll have to listen to this a bit more.
Starts as a solid hard rock riff fest but the second half is pure art.
Right off the bat im vibing Its one of those records that feels so 90’s but also i can feel its contemporary influence on recent punk bands. I love it. Its by no means a perfect 90s punk album but i really enjoy what it is. Vocals are sometimes a little shotty but overall theyre very good for the style they have. Im honestly surprised i haven’t listened to these guys earlier. Using the dog bark as a beat into been caught stealing was too good i love it. While the later songs are very long i really didn’t mind listening through the whole things, i enjoy that as the album went on it got slower. I really enjoy this album despite its flaws, i would rate it a 3.75/5 if possible, but leaning toward a 4. Would i buy this vinyl? Yeah probably.
This was actually pretty good, including the final parts of the album. While at first I kinda dreaded it, those final songs were just great. Maybe not a perfect album, but still a great one
Surprised at how much I liked it
this album rocks, it’s weird!
A fantastic follow-up to Nothing's Shocking. I do prefer Nothing's Shocking, but this has everything you could hope for in another record. Loud and energetic with its fun and slow moments. The first half consists of accessible fun songs that rock hard, culminating in their catchy classic hit "Been Caught Stealing." We then see a shift in the second half with slower, longer, and more melodically complex epics in memoriam of his deceased girlfriend, leading to a satisfying closer.
GTA San Andreas banger alert: Been Caught Stealing
4.5 stars. First half is a really good mix of high energy rock without feeling overly rowdy. Guitars have some great breakdowns best highlighted in "Three Days." Second half gets slower and more emotional due to subject (memoriam of singer's girlfriend). Standouts are "Been Caught Stealing" and "Stop"
This is pretty neat, has some very similar elements to One Hot Minute which makes a lot of sense. I do like it quite a bit better than that one
4/5
Lost the notes I had at first (user error). I like this album. It closes 10 times better than it opens. The band is at their best with the more artsy stuff. This is a great album, but Nothing’s Shocking is a 5…hope it’s on the list. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
I had totally forgot about “Three Days,” one of my favorites. Great album!
good
Definitivamente suena a los 90 y eso que fue lanzado apenas la década comenzaba a respirar.
good album
I've never really liked Jane's Addiction due to the almost screeching voice of the signer. Even then, I can't help but to enjoy Been Caught Stealing; the musical quality of it overpowers my distaste for the singer's voice. I'll have to give this one a four just because they're pretty damn good, although for myself this album is like a 1.7 maybe a 2.4 on a good day.
I normally abhor Jane's Addiction. Them and Perry Farrell's other band Porno for Pyros have always felt like the same music because he's so unique and overpowering as singer. Neither have piqued my interest over the years. I have Nothing's Shocking a low rating but this album just hit for me. I still dislike Been Caught Stealing but the rest of the songs are really good. I'll listen again.
Never been a fan. This is a really good album. Who knew? MattyB
Like slapping yourself in the face. In a good way.
Got caught by a handful of guitar solos which got me surprised Been Caught Stealing I think I've heard on GTA game, Guess it is GTA San Andreas. Did not expect a over 10 minute song
The singer's girlfriend died of heroin overdose, and his mother died by suicide when he was 4. The latter event connects him to the guitarist, whose mom was murdered when he was a teenager. Seeing all these as background, I expected this to be dark, and hoped that it's not exploitative. As a listen, I was a bit surprised at how interesting it was. And perhaps it's because such non-pompous and energizing flavor of hard rock is rare. It's quite fun, despite the generic-ness of it all.
good!
Id really give it a 4.5/5 so prob a 7.8 / 10
Very interesting album that definitely deserves many listens. The first part was interesting but after Been Caught Stealing the whole album got kicked up a notch and I enjoyed it better
I enjoyed it!
Really good album.
Hyvä groove, monipuolisia kappaleita ja siistejä riffejä. Hyvä kokonaisuus
Jane's Addiction is right in my musical wheel house, but I hadn't listened to the whole album, and now I'm glad that I have.
They've grown on me recently and I'm beginning to see difference in their tracks I didn't see before. Really enjoyed this.
Really enjoyed this album. Nothing's shocking has always been my favorite but this is just as great,
Started strong with punchy vocals and guitars! I feel like it wandered a little too much in the last two tracks. I think it would've bothered me less if it came back up in energy at the end. Instead, it felt like the album loses steam. The little interludes and use of found sound are dope though.
Once again, I am surprised by my reaction to this album. I have long-detested Perry Farrell's voice, almost as much as Anthony Kiedis' and y'all know that's a lot. So, in a rare instance of admitting I was wrong to @pretentious-ass, I liked this album. Like, a lot. I even liked the 10-minute song Three Days. I really dig the guitar riffs and simplicity of the sound. I think I have to admit this album into my rotation.
Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro must have a thing about nipples. Nipples feature on several Jane's Addiction album covers, and are ever-present when they are on stage. I used to think that Jane's Addiction was trying a little to hard to be shocking, right up there with Red Hot Chili Peppers. In spite of that, both RHCP and Jane's Addiction make awesome music. (And if you had to admit this into your rotation, Bethany, maybe there is room for RHCP too!) I do have to rank this album slightly below "Nothing's Shocking," though. I never wanted "Three Days" and "Then She Said..." to end, and "Been Caught Stealing" is a classic even if not technically their best work. But "Ain't No Right," "Obvious," and "Of Course" don't quite work for me. The first two have a bit too much going on at times, like the concurrent guitar and piano solos on "Obvious."
Such a great album. Jane's Addiction is one of those bands that all my friends were into so I never really dove deep. Really loved Three Days and Classic Girl is a great closer.
Odd album, alot of interesting things. Almost gave 3 but admired how out there some of the songs became.
Good stuff.
It's a little uneven (mostly on the back end), but this is a great album. "Been Caught Stealing" is an all-time great track and is worth three stars by itself. In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed four of the first five tracks (especially "Sorry!" and not including "Obvious"). Things get a little weird after that. "Three Days," "Then She Did" and "Of Course" are about 26 minutes combined, which is about half of the album. If I'm going to listen to a 7+ minute song regularly it's gotta be amazing, and they don't clear that bar. The closest to do so is "Of Course," which has a Jewish fiddle thing going on that I enjoy (reminds me a bit of Green Day's "Misery). And the lyrics about his older brother making him hit himself in the face is likely to get a chuckle from brothers everywhere. TLDR; there's a lot to like here, even if I don't necessarily want to listen to some of the tracks regularly.
Solid 90s rock. I've always loved Perry Farrell's voice.
Played this album a ton back in the day. It was great to revisit how great Jane's Addiction was.
This album have a lot of power
Not really related to anything, but I still remember the first time I heard Jane’s Addiction, hearing “Been Caught Stealing” on GTA: San Andreas’ rock station. I thought it was a Beastie Boys song, because Perry Ferrell just has a similar vocal tone to the Beasties. I thought the same thing when I heard “Killing in the Name” on the same setlist, heh. Anyway, their discography is the stuff of legends. Dave Navarro is the clear MVP, finding new ways to make his distinctive tone stand out throughout, while the rhythm section keeps up with him perfectly. I think the first third is the most basic, and it becomes more exciting as it goes along, but it’s all pretty good. B+

Rock-punk-tastic. 4 stars
First half is Chili Peppers but better than the Chili Peppers ever were. Second half is a 90s rock odyssey. I like.
Classic!
Een klassieker
Productietechnisch heb ik wel wat moeite met dit album, maar muziekaal gezien vind ik echt een boeiend album.
Stop and Been Caught Stealing are foundational listening to understand the musical landscape of rest of the 90s. While there are some good nuggets here and there, the rest of the album doesn't quite rise to the same level of greatness, let alone the energy or unbridled enthusiasm.
Better than I expected, quite a lot of fun!
Was surprised by this album, gonna listen again sometime
eerste helft: Wat alternatieve hardrock, leuke nummers Tweede helft: Wat meer experimenteel, langere nummers met goede opbouw, stukjes met viool, en grotendeels wat rustiger. Zeker van dit album genoten!
Stop - 9/10 No One Leaving - 8/10 Ain't No Right - 10/10 Obvious - 9/10 Been Caught Stealing - 7/10 Three Days - 9/10 Then She Did - 9/10 Of Course - 9/10 Classic Girl - 7/10
Liking this more than I'd expected - I feel like I always have the same reaction to JA which is: Perry's voice is tough in larger doses. But the music is damn cool, and while "Been Caught Stealing" can just be annoying it's much better for me in context of the album as a whole. The guitar playing is fantastic on the album, keeping things from sliding into any typical late 80s/early 90s metal (not that there's anything wrong with that). Different styles and tones from song to song keep it fresh. Really good and somewhat unique hard rock album that I like more now than when it was released and a marked improvement over their debut with more diversity and dynamics. Also: do yourself a favour and don't listen to this (or anything) out of a single crappy phone speaker - makes a huge difference. 7/10 4 stars.
They have a punk energy and attitude but the music is more dense and complex than that. Also, the guitar solos are so much more epic and dramatic than I might have expected for the punk-ish / alt-rock music. Some real stadium rock shit. The guitar reminds me of The Who at times. I love it. Some of the long songs near the end drag a little but overall I really like the album. Highlights: “Stop,” “Obvious,” “Three Days” (wow, what an epic long song!)
Solid rock album from a solid rock band. "Been Caught Stealing" is one of the best songs of the 1990's and I would bet influenced a lot of 90's rock (as it came out in 1990). The dog barking as a rhythm is very clever and fun and it's no surprise that it was a radio favorite. More diverse album than I remember, with "Three Days" being a weird down/midtempo track that very slowly builds and contrasts the format of tracks from the rest of the album.
Gran disco clásico!
Good
Slightly more accessible than Nothing's Shocking, but still a very engaging album.
Surprising back half to the album unlike the more straightforward rock tracks at the beginning. Both sides good in their own way. 4/5
It was pretty darn cool
Sick as fuck. Atleast while working out
The unmistakable sound of Perry Farrell - opens with a belter in Stop, then eases you back down until the midway point with that favourite of MTV Been Caught Stealing. Perry's voice is soothing and scathing in equal measure, and fits perfectly in either the hi octane songs, or lower tempo songs like Then She Did... Loved it
I surprisingly liked it. Great band and pretty good vocals
I enjoyed this album from start to finish. I don't know why I don't listen to more of their work, but it may have to do with the fact that I was really hip-hop focused from the beginning of the 90s through high school.
Took me back some. I hadn't listened to the entire album before, but solid throughout
Then She Did... is one of my favorite songs ever. The rest is good as well, but not as spectacular.
This definitely got more interesting on the second listen. I don't think it will be my last listen.
3.75
i reallllly liked this album. i want to give it 5 but I can't.
2 big hits, rest were meh.
A quality mix of punk, funk, hard rock, general silliness and heartfelt angst. Not as appealing to me in the second half when it lost energy and focused in on dead loved ones. Still much more than I was expecting, hard to pin down to a time or a genre, I’m glad this list brought it to my attention.
Great
I don't personally like Jane's Addiction, but I'll give them 4 stars for their influence on alternative music.
I like this. One of the eyebrow-raising things I've found with this exercise is that I like heavier rock more than I thought I did.
This album rules. I was familiar with the hits off this album and always loved them, and those still bump, but I didn’t know the other slower songs, which are sick and remind me older 70’s songs from the likes of Led Zeppelin and Rush. Surprise standout was the 8 minute Then She Did... which kicks off the 3 song finale of the album.
They remind me of a harsher version of the RHCP. A lot of really good bass lines and it's easy to see why Dave Narvarro could easily step in and play with them. He's an excellent guitarist. Don't love Perry Farrell's voice, but overall I liked this album. Previously I had only heard a few of the songs.
Pretty good stuff Best track: Classic Girl
Very cool, definitely flowed better than I'd expected (especially based in some of the other reviews here) but a very fun rock album not bogged down by a lot of the theatrics (aside from excellent use of dog barks) otherwise seen in late 80s rock
Mid-nineties alt-rock that thinks it's cleverer than it really is - and that's a shame because when it forgets about trying to be something it isn't the songs are great. Best Tracks: Stop; No One Leaving; Been Caught Stealing
I have love for this album. When I was getting into Janes Addiction in the mid 2000s I feel like the consensus was that this is their best album. I think it’s obviously Nothings Shocking. This one is weirdly more of its time than Nothings Shocking wave. Stop, Been Caught Stealing and Three Days are my favourites
I was happy to listen to this again after high school and college days. Holds up well, found myself liking the more dreamy/ethereal stuff like "Then she did", but "Been Caught Stealing" is still a fave. A few to forget otherwise would rate higher.
STOP and my 90s nostalgia go together like peas and carrots Jenny
I've tried really hard to get I to Nothing Shocking. I own it on vinyl but whenever I play it there's something that keeps me disengaged. The vocals are difficult the spreading guitar solos are not my style. I appreciate some of the songs but as an album it leaves me cold. Ritual De Lo Habitual has the same elements, but I find there's a higher degree of variety in the production and the songwriting. I like it better for that which also gives me hope for Nothing Shocking. I especially like the longer songs in the second half which really allow the band to stretch out. A very good album 4 🌟
Decent rock album. Pretty big, soaring songs. Still love Been Caught Stealing.
In 1990 Jane's Addiction were never on my radar. More James, Happy Mondays, Cocteau Twins, The Breeders, Public Enemy etc. As a first listen it was interesting there is a lot to take in.The album blends funk, psychedelic and prog rock into an alternative rock and metal sound and they pull it off quite well. Three Days is an epic song and I did prefer the second half of the album from their well known hit 'Been Caught Stealing'. The violin on "Of Course" is just genius.
Experimental and catchy
These aren't my preferred Jane's Addiction songs, but this is still a solid album. "No One's Leaving" is great, and "Classic Girl" is sweet!
This is much better than most of the Jane's Addiction that I knew.
I dig Jane's Addiction. I feel like they were a unique drop in a sea of homogenous rock.
Actually really liked that. It was 90s Alternative Rock and even some sounds that I would attribute to late 90s Pop-Punk, combined with 70s rock and made a great combination
Pretty good, I like this singer's voice. I didn't know Dave Navarro was a part of Jane's Addiction, that's cool! A 3.5 for me
I've never had a problem with Jane's Addiction, however nothing I've heard has ever made me want to listen any further. This was a really nice surprise. I liked this way more than I thought I would. I will 100% be spinning this again, great stuff.
Defining college radio fodder of my tender late adolescence. And actually pretty great. Got Caught Stealing is still pretty subversive and fun a t the same time which is a surprisingly rare combination.
So Perry Ferrell is super cool. He is just a rock star. I hear he's a control freak, but he makes awesome rock music. Been Caught Stealing was a song I listened to endlessly when I was younger. I failed to hear the full album until now though. They kind of scared me then. Stop is an excellent opening track. Really introduces the band and their sound. The music, while obviously influenced by 80s guitar rock, still stands the test of time. There's a Van Halen vibe, but the bass is on another level. Knowing now that Three Days and Then She Did are about Perry's deceased girlfriend is very grim. What a tragic life he had in the beginning!
My first real listen to Jane's Addiction, and they are a lot more funkier than I expected. Very good.
Very angsty 90s rock. Like most bands on this list, I'm familiar with the singles that got on the radio but otherwise don't know much else. Jane's Addiction seems to have two sides to them, with one being very fast/frantic instruments and aggressive vocals, and the other being very psychedelic and more thoughtful. Overall I liked the 2nd half more, I think Stop and Been Caught Stealin are always fun to listen to and the front half was still alright but it got too much with the frenetic energy. The slower tunes in the back end helped come down from that opening, I didn't like Of Course but the rest was mostly positive.
Very good funk rock album! Stop and Been Caught Stealing are great singles, but Three Days is a very good proggy gem that is a satisfying 10 minutes. And the synth in Then She Did... was very Faith No More esque. Super fun album.
ihan jepa rokkenrollit. GTA:SA nostalgiat iski. voisin kuunnella uudestaan.
Kova levy. Siistiä miten tyyli muuttuu tokalle puoliskolle. Three Days ja Then She Did parhaat. Been Caught Stealing ihan läppä rallatus.
Frantic energy, yet polished production. Slurred, yet passionate vocals. Guitar and vocals drenched in effects.
A good one to blow the cobwebs away.
Nice, I really enjoyed it, good for boring work - it's a booster
Really cool guitar, very interesting chord progressions. Songs were engaging and interesting. Pop -punky but a bit edgier
Really unqiue
vibrant, dynamic, stop-start, carrying hints of prog in the harmonies and the keyboards as well as flavours of Led Zep in the guitars and drums. an ambitious album, packed with ideas - most of which are well-executed
4/5 - Pretty rad
Solid, hadn't heard the whole album before. 90's rock
