Reviews (page 5 of 8)

Doesn't stand up all these years later.

Not my kind of music.

5/10 - it was fine nothing crazy.i thought it was funny how they introduced themselves in Spanish

These guys have done nothing to stand out to me at all

I think this is the 3rd time I've tried this album over the years. I always loved Been Caught Stealing, but never got into the other songs. With this listen I was really impressed by how well everything is mixed. Every element sounds fantastic. I liked the run from BCS to the end of the album a lot, actually. But as a whole, still not one of my favorites.

The album is alright, the musicians are great and this doesn't feel like an alternative rock album. Yet I didn't like the singer and how most of the songs felt like it didn't had a direction.

Started strong but last three songs.....wth? I never like Navarro. I always thought he was a pretentious git but I have a whole new appreciation for Eric Avery after listening to this.

Favorite Track: Been Caught Stealing

James Addiction was always hard for me to get into because I couldn't separate the antics from the music. I am familiar with their big singles but this is the first time I've listened to this album in its entirety. My feeling is that this is a perfectly fine record. I think there are 3-4 really good songs and the rest are not noteworthy good or bad. 3/5

A few absolutely great songs and then some not so great songs. Just an average record overall

While the first half is fairly par for the course of early Alt Rock, a surprisingly diverse memorial on the back half of this record makes it stand up amongst the rest. It's weird but in a touching way once you know the story behind it.

I quite liked this alternative rock album from the early 1999s. A bit grungy, but catchier and more varied. It became a bit directionless toward the end but overall it was a good listening experience. It's somewhere between 3 and 4 stars.

Not bad, it was a bit gritty in a good way. Decent music to drive around too

From head nodding to head banging.....

This is a certain vibe and I can vibe

Some interesting songs, very unique instrumentals, 3/5

I kinda liked this less edgy version of hard rock, but it didn’t stand out too much. Of Course really carries the album. Favorite Track: Of Course

Good guitar, as was the case with the last Jane's Addiction album I had. But I still don't like the vocals.

If I’d heard this as an impressionable teenager, I most likely would have built my latest identity around it, pretended I was hardcore or some shit, started hanging out with pseudo-bohemians wearing black and too much eyeliner, realized I was a poser when they started doing heroin and I learn I’m not about that life, then quietly move on to the next phase of my never-ending march towards self-discovery. Alas, I am not that teenager. So it gets a three and l’ll probably never listen to it again.

Similar to the previous Jane’s Addiction album I reviewed: - I didn’t recognise the biggest hit (or any of the tracks, in this case) - I was pleasantly surprised by the combination of hard alt-rockin’ and quirky, global musical influences. Seems like they address some pretty heavy topics too, to counteract the lighter stuff. On the flip side, none of the actual tunes were particularly memorable so I probably won’t listen again. Nonetheless, I can see this album has something going for it.

Patchy. There are some great bits and Been Caught Stealing takes me back to being in the rock club on a Saturday night. Good times. A lot of it meanders along a bit aimlessly though. And his voice gets a bit grating at times

Nice variety in this album can’t say I truly enjoyed it though.

Thinking 3 stars, 2-3 songs I would definitely save. I liked the experimentation floating around with different cultural styles of music

Woah it’s like the first half and second half were 2 completely different albums with the first being a collection of shorter, catchier songs (which I wasn’t the biggest fan of but they were alright), and the second half being much longer (up to 10 minutes). The first half was fine, not great in my opinion and I wasn’t a fan of the vocals, the guitar solos were the best parts and the slap bass on the second song was very nice but this album is much better on the second half, with its longer more progressively advancing songs which were much more complex and I found I preferred the vocals more on these ones for some reason, probably due to his shift in vocal style in a more softer tone. Three days and of course were my personal favourites, I feel these show what the band could really do when they had more time to include more ideas on the songs, then she did was pretty good as well. The last song not so much but doesn’t bring down the quality of the second half really, it was still pretty good. Overran I feel this doesn’t quite deserve a 4 just for the fact that half the album really lived up to that level for me with the first half not quite so much so I’ll give this the highest 3 I can give (6.5/10)

Le rock alternatif des 90s : jamais complètement nul, mais jamais renversant non plus.

Not bad, the singer's voice got annoying after a while though

Its a rough album with several great tracks that express an emotion through the lyrics and the sound, which are very interesting to listen to. But then there are songs that just fall very flat I would saying it is a very okay album not maybe a greatest.

I like the sound, but the problem is the whole album sounds the same. So go sick of it by the end.

Three days is great, the rest I didn’t enjoy that much

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I was prejudging this album based on Been Caught Stealing, which really is the weakest track on here. Three Days and Of Course are the standout tracks.

Solid album, very experimental, has a blend of styles, first half more energetic and the second half a bit slower, Perry's vocals I found a little grating. Will come back to it though

I am absolutely flabbergasted that this album is labled as metal. Like, did the person deciding on the genres even listen to this? This album is more closely related to britpop than it is to metal, which says a lot considering Jane's Addiction aren't even a British band. But besides the horrific genre labeling, it's a pretty solid album. Definitely a bit messy, but still all around a solid listen.

I didn't really get this one, what's special about it?

Not my cup of tea

Much more into the first half than the second.

I enjoyed dome of this, but a lot is a bit cacophonous for my tastes.

Alright. Wouldn't listen to again.

Musically most of the tracks are good, but I don’t find it enjoyable listening to Perry Farrell. His voice grinds me.

I can't tell if I really like this or if I'm just inclined toward it since it came out when I was in high school. But I am really enjoying this album. Obvious has real appeal, Been Caught Stealing has always been a favorite. Of Course is also really good.

Quirky with its melding of funk, punk and heavy metal in 1990. Perry Farrell's voice can be an acquired taste and the first 3 songs are samey, but you can hear how the band influenced 90s alt rock in their melding of genres and their delightful weirdness. Highlights: "Stop!" (high energy opener), "Obvious" (has a B-52's feel to it with the jerky rhythm and harmonies--no female vocals, though. It just feels like a song version of the phrase "reckless abandon".), "Been Caught Stealing" (the hit from this one...catchy shouting), "Classic Girl" (the shortest (just under 5 minutes) and best song of the last four. It doesn't overstay its welcome like the other 3) Notable: They try for epic on the second half of the album with 3 of the 4 songs over 6 minutes but fall a bit short (some interesting experimentation with Middle Eastern sounds even if it doesnt completely work)...

Jaunty and fun and a little grimy, like the gutterpunk art kid you knew in undergrad who turned out to be nice after all. Prominant bass riffs, and playful vocals.

Ritual de lo Habitual is like going to a magic show and thinking, 'Impressive, but I still want to know where the rabbit went!

Surprised I didn't hate this! Not the album with that annoying song Jane Says. Worth another listen at some point.

Grunge was coming, like Captain Trips, and to the nascent funk rock and metal bands gaining attention, the best course of action was to lay down on the lawn and cough yourself to death. sure, there were a few holdouts -- Primus carried on like genetic freaks, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers basically survived by jumping right before the elevator hit the ground -- but most people who specialized in That Sound were better off spending their last few days with their loved ones before going to their rooms and shuffling off. i hesitate to call Jane's Addiction a victim; rather, i consider them more a paranoid prepper, a modern day Joseph Smith Jr., frantically writing down their manifesto of dogma and prophecies before detonating their suicide vest during a no-knock raid. somehow, that manifesto made its way out of that gore-soaked basement, and you can find traces of its influence in other bands that were skeptical of the coming tide of mopey guys in flannel. hell, it might have even been a hit with a few of those guys -- i think Vedder might have brought a bit of that energy with him from the California coast. however, i think the work is most popular among the more presentable bands, like Spin Doctors or Blind Melon. maybe you can roll your eyes at the first half of the album, say that it's just your regular hard rock evangelizing that doesn't really go anywhere and sounds way too 1990 for its own good. the four tracks after feel like accidentally hitting a communion with God, probably even making you ask "wait, they're a... good band?" i would say yes. Jane's Addiction can be a good band when they wanna be. and you're not a poser for liking them. ok, well, maybe you're a little bit of a poser. get over yourself.

this is what bi-polar sounds like

decent

nice 80s rocker held back by the fact that its from 1990, fun listen

-I listened to this while shaving in the bath -the first song came on and I thought I was going to hate it. I was pleasantly surprised and eventually came to like it, for the most part -honestly kind of surprised it came out in 1990, some of the songs were very reminiscent of 2000s music. guess they were ahead of their time -Favorites are Ain’t No Right and Been Caught Stealing

Simply okay

Not really my kind of music but kept me interested, kinda like The Cure lite. Favourite song was Obvious

Been caught stealing made me feel like I was in a 2000s rom com montage

Macht Spaß, das zu hören.

Farrell’s voice is so screechy, I guess it works here but I really don’t like it. The album is good enough, I think Dave Navarro makes this album.

The music is great but I don’t like the singing.

I love the name but Perry's vocals have always annoyed me, Been Caught Stealing is an absolute tune though

Very enjoyable

Could barely stand to listen but the great violin playing got me through it.

Angsty early 90s alt-rock by a hugely impactful band, who I admittedly never cared much for. Perry's voice can be grating at times, but it's no doubt one of the most iconic singing voices in the rock genre, and it is on full display here. The band as a collective unit is solid. TIL the back half of the album is a tribute to Perry Farrell's deceased girlfriend Xiola Blue, who died of a heroin overdose in the 80s. It was also credited as helping to inspire Nirvana with 'Nevermind' and ushering in the Led Zeppelin revival.

I've heard this album before. I'm not much of a fan of Jane's Addiction, but there are some good songs on this album They have similarities to the Chili Peppers but they are always doing a lot more interesting things than the Peppers. Experimental and influential so they deserve an album on the list. My preference would be only one album, but I get why this and "Nothing's Shocking" are both on the list.

Couple of great 90s songs...found the rest just ok.

Goede muzikanten, maar de nummers pakken me niet. Wel origineel.

A mix, for me. Track 1 was great, and I thought I'd be writing a sort of "I like Jane's Addiction, who knew" style review. But then tracks 2 and 3 happened and I thought they were awful. Track 4: better. And a mixed bag after that; 6 and 7 were actually pretty great. It seemed to get more psychedelic as it went along. Overall, what struck me was that this sounds *exactly* like it should: a band from LA; post-GnR but pre-grunge, mates with the Chilis. Mix all that together and, yes, it should sound exactly like this. Music is funny like that. I would probably have liked this more in 1990; it's not very "me" these days, but I'll still listen to some tracks again. (However. The "godfather of alternative music"? No. He may have influenced some things to come, but equally the influences are plain to hear.) Overall: more interesting than I expected.

I have heard of this band. I do know some of their tracks. I know this first track. I never really dove into their albums though. So very interested in what I hear. Pretty good.

Been Caught Stealing is the fun, standout track on this album with signature percussion and a falsetto that launched ships. Listening to the other tracks, its really just more of the same. So, if you love Jane's Addiction sound then you'll love this album. It is somewhat of a one-trick pony to me, though.

This is great and it goes a little beyond grunge which is cool. Perry Ferrell’s voice is an attraction on its own. They pepper in some sounds from different genres and do a good job of letting it rip the whole time. It’s not my thing, but I can tell they’re doing their thing well.

nice enough

About half of the album is real good. The other half is ok. I like the guitar on this album. There first album is better.

Not a big fan of the lead singer’s voice but there’s a reason some of those songs are popular because they are solid but not solid lyrically

Okay. Normally I'm okay with Farrell's voice but it annoyed me on this album. The last half were just a bunch of obnoxiously long songs where he droned on and on about stuff that didn't make sense. Only really good song on here is "Benn Caught Stealing". Everything else just feels like Farrell is spasming out on the mic with the lyrics. Guitar was great though.

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would-usually after 3 songs Farrell's voice just gets on my nerves. instead this was a pleasant surprise. Stop is a great opening track. 3.5 stars-would have been a 4 but I really hate the cover art.

These guys are crazy. The distinct sound makes them great. I got to see them recently in concert but without Dave Navarro. They are the definition of dysfunctional.

Pretty good.

Frenetic high paced teenage American start. I’m too old for this nowadays & Perry’s voice is too high for me but must have been great live. What genre is this ? Punk funk metal ? 1990 was a watershed for music I like this quote : ‘They’re often credited as pioneers of the alternative rock movement that led into the 1990s — a bridge between 1980s post-punk and 1990s grunge/alt scenes.’ Lots of switches & breakdowns in the songs keeping it interesting. Side 2 starts with a 10 minute epic followed by an 8 minute track. It really is a proper LP the 2nd side is progressive, you wouldn’t guess it was the same band by the time it gets to ‘Of Course’. This is not my cup of tea, but I can hear that this is a beautifully crafted well thought out LP that deserves to be in this book

My music education continues, with yet another band I had heard of, but hadn’t actually listened to. After the first 4 songs, I was ready to rate it a two or even less, as those selections just weren’t my thing. But after that, I didn’t mind the rest of the album and really actually enjoyed some of those cuts. I probably won’t make an effort to listen to it again, but it comes out to be a 3.0 for me.

Op zich wel leuke rockmuziek. Zang is wat schreeuwerig maar de melodie en energie is goed. ***

I knew the singles on this one but enjoyed the second half of the album.

More to it than I expected when I saw who it was.

Tja. På papiret burde det være lige noget for mig. Men jeg finder det lidt for skabet, så det bliver bare irriterende gennem et helt album. I det mindste er der en ny sang til hunde playlisten.

Interesting punkish rock with varying influences

Loved some of the songs- Stop, been caught stealing, three days. Didn’t love his voice a ton.

3 Stars (8/15)

Nothing interresting, notable or remarkable about this. Instantly forgettable.

Jane's Addiction isn't bad, and they were better than most of what was in the radio in the '80s, but that's not necessarily saying a lot.

Can't believe I used to live this album so much as a mopey teenager, what miserable crap.

Classic album from my college days, anything college days always hits a sweet spot. The 2 biggest songs from the album are the only ones I knew, but that's good enough for me.

Not too bad... but not too good... typical 90s fare

Overrated. Not sure why this album went double platinum - it came across as a hot mess to me. I always say “a little Perry Farrell goes a long way”. I can only take him in small doses. +1 for Dave Navarro‘s guitar work which is always tasty.

Ooof, what a frustrating album. It was my first time listening to Jane's Addiction, but I'm pretty sure it will be also the last time. I enjoyed everything about the music except for vocal, and it was so bad, that it spoiled the whole experience. It's no surprise that my favourite song was 10 minutes track with minimal addition by vocalist. Very hard to properly rate it, but I would guess that the riffs and solos are too good to be rated low. 1/5 for vocal, 4/5 for the rest, as a result - very weak 3.

Have heard of this band but didn't know this is what they'd sound like. It was alright, but probably won't listen again.

I liked it. but nothing really stood out. gets a bonus point for the album cover.

Perfectly mid album. Some things I liked, some things I didn’t but it was a fun listen mostly.

90s rock in a nutshell. Hated his voice

I think the vocals are pretty annoying, but the music is jamming

Saved from 2 stars by the violin on 'Of course'

it’s decent. i thought id enjoy it a bit more

I didn’t have any opinion on the album until Three Days. I found some things okay, and a lot of instrumentals or lyrics strange. Three Days was a good song and so was the one after. Otherwise, I can’t say I liked the album. I can’t decide if it is good or bad. Mediocre describes it best. Would not want to listen to it again. Standouts: Three Days and Then She Did…

Really really fine. Borders on boring Light 5 to strong 5 Cover: 8/10 to 3/10 You had class from 3-4:15 and hung out with Trent

I thought I would like this more, but there were only a few good songs in my opinion. 3/5

I generally liked this album. I really liked his voice specifically. Some songs went on a bit, but I really enjoyed a few, namely Then She Did... and Been Caught Stealing. 3/5

No private session used for Spotify. I have a mixed view on Jane's Addiction, some good songs but a unsure about Farrell maybe because he is the inexplicably cool and overly confident kid on the playground who made fun of me for wearing the same shirt twice in one week. I like every aspect of this album except Perry's voice, it sometimes works but mostly not.

Man, this album really tanked after Been Caught Stealing. Before that, the album was fairly solid 90's alt rock. Then it got weird. Favourite songs: Been Caught Stealing, Stop! Least favourite songs: Three Days, Then She Did..., Of Course 3/5

Not familiar with this group.

I feel like I should like Jane's Addiction more than I actually do. The era, the genre, the style - all the boxes are ticked, but somehow I was just never that into them. It's not bad at all, Farrell & Navarro are undeniably a charismatic, talented duo. And yet, I struggle to raise enthusiasm above "that was OK". tldr : 3 stars - it's OK

I like Jane's Addiction every now and then, but honestly Perry Farrell's voice gets annoying after a whole album.

I liked Jane's Addiction okay back in the day. They're still fine. It's also more pop than rock, in my head, and I don't understand any descriptions of "metal" I've heard. It's very, very of that time, though.

Decent listen. Not for me but decent background music.

I feel like I end up saying this often but I think I liked this more than I anticipated. I especially enjoyed the songs from THPS that I haven't heard in 20 years.

While I think there are some unique features of this album that make it an interesting and even refreshing choice for this list, I wasn't super wowed. The songs that had more varied instrumentation were my favorites, but they got lost in the overall somewhat muddy sound.

oh cool, it's juana's adicción. time for some weird 90s rock. [52 minutes later] ...well that certainly was an album. was it good? hard to say. i only knew stop and been caught stealing going into this, which are some of their better songs, but JA never really spoke to me as much as some of the other 90s rock groups. those two tracks are definitely the high points of the album, though i will say i actually enjoyed the super-long-artsy-genre-exploration-type tracks on the back half of the album. then she did in particular sounds like an early 2010s era trail of dead song, which i can definitely vibe with. favorites: stop, been caught stealing, three days, then she did...

The hits are pretty darn good, a lot of the rest of it is weird (respectful) but not earth shattering

This band is STILL associated with Maroon 5 in my head for some reason. This was pretty good! Some of the songs were too long, but I did overall enjoy listening to it.

Who let this vocalist into the band?

They didn't sound like anyone else. Still don't. Alternative rock, but funky. The singing is flat and has the timbre of nails on a chalkboard. The music is good. The songs are too long. Favorite song: stop

I know that I'm meant to like Jane's Addiction but I've never really been on board. It was alright.

Three Days ist gut, der Rest nervig bis OK.

May have liked it more in the 90s. Recognizing the relationship e.g. To Mothers Milk by RHCP

Nice and solid. Grunge elements and early US punk elements coming together in a good way

First time listening to this band. First 5 rockier numbers i could take or leave. Track 6 onwards was a different kettle of fish. Wiki said these tracks were more proggier and boy were they right. Three Days and Then She Did were worth the admission price alone. Music right up my alleyway. Will have to research Jane’s Addiction to see if they continued in the prog vein when they reformed. Would have been a solid 4 star review but let down by the albums first side. 3.5/5 20/6/24

love some 90s alt rock. dont love farrell's voice. pretty good album though!

Quite unique band and album. Probably warrants a few more listens and possibly with time an extra star. Three days is an epic on its own. 3.5 stars

Meh Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5

"Been Caught Stealing" I have already known. I like the base lines, the guitar and drums on this album but in total it doesn´t click for me. Favourite: "Three Days"

This album is fine, but you see why they’re a one hit wonder

Not my cup of tea but not bad

This was a better Jane’s Addiction album, first half anyway. Been Caught Steaking is great of course.

close to a 2

Pretty cool stuff

This was pretty meh aside from the two singles.

I once saw Perry Ferrell at Burning Man. It's the right setting for him.

Throwback! 3.5/5

This is a three star album. Favourite track: Stop.

Loved! 3.5 Favs: it ain’t right, three days , then she did

Some good tracks, but overlong. Some lyrics quite obnoxious

Great late 80’s early 90’s rock album,

I'm not sure I NEEDED to listen to this before I die but it isn't bad.

A good way to spend the morning

Good one!

Classic 90's!

Not bad

Good to work out to. Enjoyed the very LA aesthetic.

it was alright, got better as it went on

it was kinda rockin

easy listening and short :)

Well this was another one of those albums that’s just kind of middle of the road. Back in the early 90’s when they were always on MTV I always wanted to get this album, and but never got around to it. I’m sure it was more enjoyable for its time, but it’s not really aging well either. All in all, the albums not bad, it just kind of moves along and does its own thing, but does nothing too noticeable either, so this album will just get a middle of the road rating which will be 3.

Couple good songs eventually redeemed by trying to keep LaLa going...

Its clear why this group and this album are considered groundbreakers in the alternative genre. This music is fun, heartbreaking, silly and morose all at any given moment and there are truly gifted, skilled musicians in this group and some interesting song writing ideas and thought provoking lyrics. And then there is Perry Farrell's voice. Sheesh. It reminds me of why I only put this on when I want to stroll down memory lane or listen to the instruments while hoping there is a vocal-less mix out there that will drop someday.

Unique and arguably game changing, Jane's Addiction are entertainers and innovators in rock, even though their sounds gets off trail for me sometimes. An interesting listen all in all.

What I wish the old Red Hot Chili Peppers sounded like. I would have loved this album back in high school.

Vond dit best wel dik

The very best

Three Days was really cool with the shifting tempo. Dispite the title, Of Course was quite unexpected. Very cool violin. I didn't really feel most of the rest of the album. They have some good energy though.

A cool enough album, and it doesn't sound like anything else I've heard from the late 80s or early 90s. Nothing really stood out to me though.

I like the alt rock/metal sounds that encapsulate a real 90s feel. However, the vocals are kind of miss for me. It's like a cross between a hair metal vocalist and a grunge vocalist and it doesn't mesh well with my ears.

Felt like a unique combo of punk rock and heavy metal. Something about the singing was off-putting to me. There was also some fun experimentalism to the instrumentation. I think there's plenty other rock that I would listen to before this.

Better than expected

Interesting but not for me.

What a cool album, with a very distinctive 90s’ sound. I still find it funny that I discovered Jane’s Addiction in my early teens, through Radio X on GTA: San Andreas. [0151/1001]

Just not as big of a fan of JA as a lot of people I know I guess? It's decent but that's it for me. 3.5

Was a good listen interesting stuff.

How can I not compare this to susie and the banshees that I just got? I think these bands and albums are similar. They are trying to be punk rock, of course one was a pioneer of the genre, and one comes 10 years later. This may just be my mood at this point in my life, but susies vocals are just so seductive and intriguing, these dudes are just whiny and annoying to me. I honestly just can’t stand this whiny, high pitched singing that these 90s bands were obsessed with!!! Please, cobain come and save rock!!! I hate rating an album poorly because I simply hate the singing, but if we swap out the vocal track on every song, this could conceivably rate highly. Sadly, I just don’t want to listen to this. 1 :( I like three days Then she did… is kinda beatly but with their own spin? Is side 2 way better??? Damn I guess I was a hater? Upon a relisten I like it more. This is not a 1. In no way. Either a 2 or a 3.

2.5 - This wasn't as good as Nothing's Shocking, but it was alright. A lot of the songs were just too long-winded to hit. Maybe if the tracks were shorter it'd be better. As it is, It's kinda boring and struggled to keep my attention the whole time.

Different

Sounded like 1992

When this band hits the mark, they really fucking hit it. Stop and Been Caught Stealing are awesome songs. I like the first part of the album but after 10 minutes of Three Days I'm tired of Jane and her addiction. I didn't especially like the rest of the album but they rawk out with a pretty unique sound for the first 5 songs.

I liked this more than I thought I would!

Hard funky rock with an emphasis on art-iness and psychedelia and a very different sounding vocalist/leader. Some very good progressive hard funk rock, but doesn’t sound like these guys are enjoying themselves as much as Chili Peppers or Guns n Roses from the same era and city.

Wouldn't be my first choice of artist, but I do like Jane's Addiction - this album however is not their best. Overall a good listen though, particularly in the second half.

I dont mind it

Interesante sonido, cambia la segunda parte del álbum.

This is not my favorite Janes record. As it stands, I kind of only like their hits, and I don't like this hit. So this one isn't as important to me. It's still competent, but it's not as raw and dreamy as I want.

A but dated

I can dig it

it’s obviously not musically empty but it felt a little bland at times. generally enjoyed my time with it. the stand out was Three Days

Enjoyably unpredictable

Nae bad

It's okay. Lead singer's voice kind of drives me nuts after a while.

Favorite tracks: Been Caught Stealing, Of Course, Classic Girl Rating: 3/5

I've been meaning to listen to this album from start to finish for a long time, so I'm happy this came up for me today. I bought Nothing's Shocking a long time ago after first hearing about the 1001 albums book, even though this album had two songs that I knew, opposed to the one song I knew on Nothing's Shocking. I thought this album was pretty good. "Stop" and "Been Caught Stealing" were easily my two favorite tracks. They both have great guitar playing, and are absolutely manic, in the most fun way possible. After all these years, I still don't know why there's the sound of a dog barking on "Been Caught Stealing," but it somehow manages to not be annoying. I found the songs in between "Stop" and "Been Caught Stealing" kind of boring; the parts of this album that are great are mostly great due to the guitar playing, but those three songs sound pretty run-of-the-mill, and they didn't add anything to the album. After "Been Caught Stealing," the album did get better, but the band never found the same footing that they established on "Stop" or "Been Caught Stealing." Even though this album was pretty middle of the road for me, I think Jane's Addiction were incredibly influential on popular music. When I think of the OG's of alternative rock, I think of Jane's Addition, The Pixies, and Sonic Youth. Their style influenced several rock artists, and that earns this album a spot on this list.

Love the opening energy of Stop. The forward drive of the guitars and drums is electrifying and so fun. Been caught stealing is another great track. Wasn’t loving Three Days but the bridge drums took it up a notch for me. Of Course: what?! A Klezmer song in 3/4?! Overall a 3* for me, not sure I’d revisit the album as a whole, but has some great tracks. A 4* is an album that is overall enjoyed and I would revisit even if not all tracks I loved.

Personally, I'm a much bigger fan of Navarro's later career, where he judges tattoos while having no skills in the art of tattooing himself. I have a lot of tattoos...can I be a judge on that show? For real though, dude's a killer guitarist, and tangentially, One Hot Minute is a better record with his presence. I like the structure of this album, mainly coming from the instrumentation in the back half. I wanted Farrell to stop yelling for a second and actually sing something, and we actually get that on side B. I understand it's this distinct vocal approach that put the band on the map, but something about it just gets grating after a few tracks. Glad it mellowed out a bit. I think this is where we get to hear the real Jane's Addiction, and it's better than the singles.

It’s frivolous fun fabricated from the Farrell-led foursome, but it’s fun nonetheless.

Three and a half stars, the fast stuff is great, but gets kinda melancholy in the back half

pretty massive riffs but i hate the degenerate attitude so much

3.5 stars

it was interesting enough

There's a definite shift in mood from the aggressive and disjointed "side 1" to more expansive, melodic and proggy on "side 2". I prefer side 2, especially since the vocals are more bearable. The single "Been Caught Stealing" is my least favourite song on the LP. I'm surprised these guys have two entries on 1001, but it went 2x Platinum in the US.

3,5. Hlustaði ekki í einum rykk. Sprettir inn á milli. Önnur umferð.

Not every song was a hit but a solid album.

Self indulgent egotism. Actually the worst janes addiction album. I know some Gen X types that think this is some sort of masterpiece. I guess you had to be there because I just don't see it. 6/10

3/5 better than expected with good use of experimental riffs making this more than just a straighforward 90s rock album.

“Been caught stealing” is a jam but the rest of the music is just ok. I may give this a second listen.

too long three days

First five songs are an ez 4, the last four are a bunch of drawn out boring 2s.

Very close to a 4 for me, but the album as a whole didn’t quite catch me the way I would have liked.

I've only listened to one other Jane's Addiction album, and my experience was very similar to this one—many of the tracks are interesting and nontraditional, and individually not in a noisy way. However, when played back to back in album format, it's an exhausting cacophony. I had to break my listening into two sessions. After listening to the second session, I realized that they added their own sort of break in there. I fell like this may almost deserve a four, but since it's not something that I would frequently put on, so it falls to a three.

This was solid but unspectacular to me. A few songs made me think "this is what Blink-182 would have been if they'd been born a decade earlier and listened to more hair metal."

It was pk

6.5/10 I was a huge Jane's Addiction fan when i was 19. But we'll get to Nothing's Shocking later, I would imagine. This is a band that is trying to take a big swing. Does it work? Mostly. While the first half of the album sticks mainly to what worked for them before, with strong, fast heavy songs designed for the mosh pit, the second half of the album definitely cribs from the more ambitious Led Zepplin songs. Long, many changes, pomposity, grandiousity, it's here at in Three Days and Then She Did. Those songs pretty much hit the mark they're aiming for. The drugs are working. Unfortunately the last two songs are limp and drained (Of Course and Classic Girl). The drugs fail them. This is an album that fail to cohere as a whole, and whose parts just don't quite all work. Steve Avery rules though. He caries and propels the last parts of Three Days on his very able back. No wonder this was the last thing of note JA ever did. In fact, I think Eric was a key part and when he left, the magic was gone.

Normal.

Pity 3 stars cos it's kinda alright but I can't really stand the vocals for long.

Was this all one song? Hard to tell.

Above average but they don't do anything that Pixies wasn't already doing better at the time

This is probably THE album for Jane's Addiction with their more recognizable hits of "Been Caught Stealing" and "Stop". I enjoyed some of the longer B-sides they put on here. It probably overstayed its welcome with me by 20 or so minutes but a fine album.

Enjoyable but feels pretty samey at times.

Normal.

I may just not be the mood for an album like this at the moment, but this album impressed me far less than their prior album. I feel a lot of songs almost hit the mark, but then either went on too long and made me lose interest, or felt more like I was being yelled at, in a weird, not yell-y way. Pros are there, such as the inclusion of pretty solid string sections, and a song like Been Caught Stealing is of course a banger, but this just feels like snippets of a better album, yet runs longer than that better album probably would. I sound overwhelmingly negative here, so I should specify that this is still an alright album, and will be getting a light three, but I am pretty disappointed. Again, though, could be that I'm just not in the mood for this style of music.

Meh, not really my thing. Didn't hate it though.

strongly reminded of rush, nothing that jumped out at me as amazing but a generally good record that i can see someone really loving. that someone may not be me but i still like it.

It's a good one. Funky punk without being RHCP annoying. It gets a bit jammy and noodly round the middle, which is dull. But it gives you Been Caught Stealing before that which is an all time banger.

Music that a friend of a friend is in to. Perry Farrell has grating vocals after a time.

This was not as challenging as I thought it might be, a pretty generic slice of early-90s hardish rock. Nothing jumped out but nothing jumped away either.

Unique voice, not a bad album although has some less exciting moments

Alt rock is definitely not my genre since I found this a bit tedious to get through.

Feel like i need to give this a 3 because i really enjoyed up to and including 'Been Caught Stealing'. It's a really strong first half to the record, full and life and energy, was having a great time. Then they decided to load all the longer songs onto the second half, which just drags the pace down incredibly. Not that these songs were especially bad or anything, but there's nothing I hate more than an uneven tracklist. A bit of shifting songs around and you'd have something really good here.

classic Jane's.

Ritual de lo Habitual (Spanish for "Ritual of the Habitual") is the second album by American rock band Jane's Addiction. This was the band's final album before their initial break-up the next year in 1991. This alternative rock album is considered one of the best from the band and is also certified double platinum in the US. It performed well critically and commercially, as well as inspired many other rock bands at time and the bands that followed. I enjoyed this album for the most part, but did not like some of the Spanish lyrics - just because I couldn't understand. Musically, it was a wonderful alt rock album.

Fine, nothing shocking, exactly what I expected it to be

When I first heard this album when it came out I thought it was fantastic. The groove of their metal/hard rock sound reminded me of the Chili Peppers and most of the songs were upbeat with a lot of energy and excitement. I'm not really a fan of Perry Farrell and his Porno For Pyros and solo projects and I can't say I would have listened to this again if it wasn't for this challenge, but the band had a pretty good run as their first two albums were solid and very listenable. Listening to Ritual De Lo Habitual now, wasn't as thrilling as the first time, but is something I might listen to again, for old times sake.

Genres: Alternative rock, alternative metal, hard rock, funk metal Formed: Los Angeles in 1985 Run time: 9 songs, 51 min, 39 sec The second studio album by Jane's Addiction. Here’s another group that are recognisable shortly after they startup. The most popular song is track 5, “Been Caught Stealing” with over 60M plays on Spotify. Next is track 1, “Stop” with over 31M plays.Apart from track 6, “Three Days” with over 4.5 M plays, everything else has 1-2M plays. I remember hearing track 1, “Stop” and track 5, “Been Caught Stealing” in the 90’s. The video for the latter, was played frequently on the “Power Hour” (later renamed “Raw Power”). It probably featured on MTV as well. It might be nostalgia, but I don’t think I’ll ever get bored with it. (I never got caught stealing, unlike some of the amateurs I hung around with as children!) Listen Again?: No but I’ll look for the best of… My Rating: ***

Absolutely hated the first few songs but then it started to click. Second half had some catchy tunes and kinda epic long songs

I wasn’t a fan of Nothing’s Shocking on the whole so this was a nice surprise. The production was a lot sharper and the music was just far more interesting stylistically, with some grunge and prog elements on different songs? I’m giving this a quite conservative 3 now but will definitely be revisiting (and hey, I might even give the debut another go based off this)

I wasn't too impressed with the first few songs, but starting with the ten minute plus 'Three Days' the album definitely grabbed my attention. When they're more focused on introspective and ambitious tracks, Jane's Addiction really comes into their own.

A lot of their music sounds the same and I have a hard time deciding whether I like it or not

i liked how the funk/psychedelic sound in this one. it was relatively fun and pretty solid for a hard rock number. loved the guitar from the solos to the riffs sprinkled throughout

So I apparently still don't know what to make of Jane's Addiction. On one hand, 'Been Caught Stealing' is a jam and a trip down memory lane to GTA San Andreas, and 'Three Days' is truly epic. On the other hand, stuff like 'Of Course' drags on way too long, and the intro to 'Ain't No Right' is mysterious to say the least. Cut down 10-12 minutes of unnecessary fillers/intros/outros, and this would have been a really strong record.

On this, their second album, I still have a hard time fully understanding Jane’s Addiction. Their sound is great and innovative and they are good songwriters (“Been Caught Stealing” and “Three Days” are the peak of this album) - there’s just something that never seems to get to me. Ritual De Lo Habitual starts of pretty strong but as we move into the conceptual b-side I quickly lose interest as both “Then She Did…” and “Of Course” drag on and on and on. There’s a lot I would like to love about Jane’s Addiction. But I end up just liking it instead.

It was fine, i wonder if there later albums are better. it feels like the start of something good but its not there yet

This sounds like music that would go in a tony hawk game, an extreme sports game, and/or a 3D Sonic game from the 2000s. Don't really have too much to say about this album/band. Sometimes the lead vocalist was annoying/grating to listen to, and other times he was fine. Instrumentation was pretty good, and a few songs had great bass lines. Another 3/5 for the books

The intro is classic. I love the strings in Of Course. At times, I was wishing that Perry Farrell had a richer voice with more rounded tones, and then I realized two things. The first thing was that I have been watching too much of the show The Voice, and the second thing was that if his voice was any different, it just wouldn’t be Jane’s Addiction.

I love Been Caught Stealing. All the other songs kinda blend into nothing I really remember

Yeah I mean it's nothing special

Honestly that’s better then I remember

Like the music, not into the vocals

Bland and unexciting, all songs sound kind of the same. Not great, but just meh

Cool but I stopped listening to it after a song that resembled me of metallica's four horseman because I had to lsiten to that, sorry

Never heard of these guys.... played first track... thought to myself, this is lively, not too bad, bit of a Beastie Boys flavour in there, then came track 2... and 3... and by then track 4 I was bored of the sound.. Will try the rest later me thinks. Finished the album, this Americana type of alternative rock never did appeal that much to me, but these guys seem quite capable of some complex chord arrangements which are all let down by strained yell vocals at times.

Never really listened to this band before, I like the album, quite a mix of nu punk influences.

There's some good stuff on here but nothing really awesome. Tons of cool guitar work, and this DEFINITELY sounds like a Jane's Addiction record.

Some great songs, but irritating after the first.

Il y a bcp de bons la dedans maks de la repetitiin aussi... 3.25

Didn’t blow me away.

Some songs are good and some guitar solo's are great, but now I know why I only knew Navarro from his time in RHCP

Some really nice parts, but nothing that really sticks

Compromised listen. Songs were cool, but a little long though.

Some nice guitar and drum work. Not a fan of the screaming/singing but that's Jane's Addiction for you.

It’s a unique sounds to some actually good songs that for me have permeate through the years and always feel fresh somehow. Dave Navarro’s guitar is awesome and Perry’s voice between haunting and snarky - a rather odd combination however they never seem to grip me for long - the album tapers towards the end even though it still remains interesting. I think to solve the deadlock the question is - would I ever pick this album on a whim? No so I guess i like it but not that much.

Sorta Rocky, sorta Funky. But mostly derailed by Perry Farrell just splatting his high, whiny, and almost entirely tuneless, little voice over the proceedings.

I've been meaning to listen to a Janes Addiction album for a while now, glad I finally did but I was kinda underwhelmed by this one. I'll probably give a different album a try at some point

lol this ended up being pretty fun, had a very specific 90s brattiness that shows its age, but is kinda charming for it

I have never listened to an entire Jane's Addiction album, only know them from the radio play they got. So the first half of this album was enjoyable, a few songs I knew and some similar songs. But the album had a second half which isn't great and is, in fact, quite boring. So it's fine in the aggregate.

Highlights: "Stop," "Been Caught Stealing" There's an incredible survey of genres here. You can hear the Madchester, but also dub and punk, and above all hair metal. Once again, actually not sure how much credit to give this, because I avoid hair metal in general. But the fact that this and Alice in Chains' "Facelift" came out on the *same day* owes something to someone. It hurts to say I may have to listen to Aerosmith for reference; that wasn't how I thought of Jane's Addiction before, but it is now. This album is painfully LA. It's not just raw punk meets psych and metal; they threw the whole bag of studio tricks at this album, without which it would be unbearable. Case in point, the complete inability of Perry to double-track normally or prefer the song's key over his go-to intervals, sounding like a carousing band of selves at karaoke. There's also a lot of brooding, artsy fluorishes (so help me, "Then She Did" pursues some Zappa-era George Duke ideas) that may do more harm than good. The lyrics can once in a while have real power to them, dramatic surprises -- never enduring for a whole song, but for moments in "Three Days," "And Then She Did," and "Classic Girl," like "I would have introduced you to my mom...she was unhappy like you" or the twist from "that's how we were" to "actually, that's how we are." It's also unable to separate good ideas from bad ones; the Lou Reed-y confessional, essayistic aspect draws out things that are just embarrassing, like the entirety of "Of Course." One of the most uneven albums I've ever heard; unforgettable peaks, dismal valleys.

This is quintessentially Jane's Addiction: loud unintelligible singer, washed out stereo guitars, and general loudness. * Obvious * Been caught stealing * Three days

Better than expected

A more interesting rock/metal album from the 80s/90s with a vocalist i didnt totally love. One that needs more than one listen but I feel there are are some decent songs under the noise.

The band really cooks, and the songs dealing with death are interesting. But Perry Farrell’s voice is going to be a dealbreaker for a lot of people.

Was ok, not something I would listen to again

Never heard of this and didn't really enjoy it to be honest. On paper I should have liked it as hard rock/metal, but here we are Saved tracks: Obvious, Then She Did..., Classic Girl

I loved this as a 19 year old - tortured my poor dad to listen to it on the drive to university. But listening now, the bulk of the album is pretty crappy raga type shit rock. The final 4 songs more than make up for it, as mad as they are

Classic

I liked the first half. The second half was a little slower going.

Idk why but I've always lumped Jane's Addiction in with Seattle grunge bands but they definitely have a sound all their own. Sometimes Perry Farrell's voice can be grating but there are certain songs where it just fits perfectly. Been Caught Stealing, Obvious, Three Days are a great stretch of songs on this album.

Jane says, the back end of the album is better than the front half

I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did okurrrrr

nothing's shocking

Didn't care for the first four songs, but enjoyed the ones that came after.

Nice record but not memorable: still pretty enjoyable.

Solid 90’s alternative rock music (accompanied by scratchy, whiny singing). Been Caught Stealing, Three Days, Then She Did, Of Course and Classic Girl are a good run of songs. Impressive electric guitar playing throughout the album.

Yeh just pretty solid

Tykkäsin tästä tosi paljon enemmän teininä. Perry Farrellin ääni on kiva ja saundit on kivat, espanja kuulostaa kivalta (enemmänkin saisi olla), mutta mä oon allerginen tolle funk-viballe mikä puskee tuolta alternativen lomasta. Exäni Stella kuunteli tätä paljon, siitä lisäpiste.

Прослушано! Неплохой альбом, есть драйв и неплохая музыка, можно переслушать.

Decent songs that are harmed by Perry Farrell's voice.

Never really been a big Jane's Addiction fan. Been Caught Stealing is a bop, but it's hit or miss for me when I hear it. Sometimes I skip the track and sometimes I let it play through. Ritual of the Usual indeed. Ferrell has a very unique vocal style, it works well for a niche alt rock band. Navarro's guitar is incredibly proficient here, but I've never liked overindulgent tracks that go on too long. It was alright. Let's stick with that. I feel neutral about this band and their music.

Streit

The Jane Addiction songs they play[ed] on the radio are fine, but did not give me high expectations for this album. I enjoyed the album more than I expected to.

Musically it sounds like they had a lot of fun here. The sound feels experimental at times, dipping slightly into a punk feel at times in the rhythm guitar, and even bringing in some metal sounding tones in the guitar solos. Yet it does stays true to being a rock album. It at least knows what its going for, and they did a pretty good job in sticking with that throughout, besides one, off the rails moment half way through I will address later. Lyrically it was trying too hard for me. It’s hard to take some of these rock albums seriously in hindsight. I’m sure at the time it was exciting to feel edgy and rebellious, but these days it feels immature, and not from an older-and-wiser point of view, but rather realizing how delusional this attitude was. We don’t have to prove anything. Just be yourself. Some highlights for me: The song Three Days, from its catchy, dark bass line through the ups and downs of its composition it worked the most for me. If they were trying to convince me with this album that they are in fact edgy and rebellious, this was probably the only track that would have me believing. In the end this is probably the only song I will come back for. Been Caught Stealing was the least interesting song on the album. Not what I was expecting going into it knowing it was the hit off the record. In my opinion it goes too far off track from the rest of the album as a whole. It’s just too poppy and flat compared to how dynamic and complex some of the other tracks are. Plus if you enjoy stealing you know… well… you are just a piece of shit. Despite its lows, this album did have more character than I anticipated going off of its dumb-ass album cover. It’s a decent rock album with a weak start, some bumps along the way, and yet manages to finish strong.

Jane’s Addiction has their own sound. Been Caught Stealing is a classic, and many of the album’s tracks are similar. Ain’t No Right is a unique jam.

It was an interesting listen. There wasn’t much melody in the vocals to latch on or remember, but the instrumentation I remember being really great. It’s refreshing to hear a band just drums, guitar, bass, and piano and how they can arrange different songs for a full album. I think my favorites were actually the longer tracks towards the end. The beginning felt like I was playing tony hawk in a good way. Definitely impressed by how well guitar drums and bass were so locked with their parts at all time. Cool listen, but wouldn’t listen again probably

So many fun sounds! There is a fullness to the sound that is almost relentless throughout most of the album. Fav song: Been Caught Stealing Great rhythm to toss song. Love the barking at the beginning. Three Days was a JOURNEY.

Three Days? Felt more like three weeks amirite. This album actually works best for me when Perry Farrell isn't singing. He's got a very unique voice, but maybe there's a good reason for that. The band is tight, and the arrangements are experimental and not what I'm used to hearing from 90s rock. I mean damn, we've got some fucking klezmer on Of Course! This is probably my favorite track on the album. I think I just am much better able equipped to accept the guy's voice when it's paired with a gorgeous, explosive violin. And Been Caught Stealing is just pure fun. This went from a 2 to a 3 over the course of writing this review.

I see some mention that Perry Farrell’s vocals not being appreciated. I don’t know why anyone would think such thoughts. Perry Ferrall’s voice fits quite well this Juana’s Addición album, particularly with the higher energy songs. The album starts off well, although I could do without the Raggae-ish opening to Ain’t No Right. Obvious is a let down. I was thinking similarly of Three Days at the beginning, but then it picks up steam and ends up being a positive. Been Caught Stealing and Stop are the highlights for me. This album was headed to fourstardom until the last two tracks where I feel a drop off. I’m not sold on the sitar sounding violin in Of Course and Perry’s voice struggles on the slower Classic Girl. I would definitely enjoy listening to this album again, but it’s likely to happen when an admirador(a) de Juana’s Addición puts it on.

Very likable and an interesting sound, just not entirely convinced about their abilities as songwriters. "Been Caught Stealing" is the exception that proves the rule.

3.5 stars. Dig the bangers but prefer Nothing Shocking as an album.
