absolutely stunning and amazing 90s gazey grungey alt rock, this is imho one of the best albums ever put out
Siamese Dream is a masterpiece. I was a teenager in the 90s, and had limited funds back then, and the pumpkins weren't quite in my radar yet (I was a big STP fan). Listening to the whole album now (I knew all the hits) I wish I would have listened to this as an angsty teen. I would be a much bigger pumpkins fan now if I had. I can like this album, but I can't love it, because it doesn't have that connection to my past. I'm still giving it 5 stars, because it is fucking amazing.
5 stars -
Yeah this is some real nice far riffage
I love this
This album is marvelously produced, has so many layers, goes from quiet to soft , and is overall sonically rich. The pumpkin's songwriting is so melodic. Without a doubt the most gifted songwriting of the grunge era. Corgan's voice pairs perfectly with fuzz distorted guitars. Tasteful use of feedback. Guitar solos are well crafted, non-virtuoso, and designed for melody enhancement rather than showmanship. Mayonnaise still hits hard.
good album that doesn't sound like everything else coming out at the time. or really much else at all
A bunch of bangers. Really solid songs with a unique grungy sound.
It’s angsty and the layered guitars are only barely this side of sane - but SP always find beauty and melody. Billy Corgan’s voice is part android, part alien. What an album.
Fantastic album!
Un muy buen album!
A more polished version of their first album. Songs are strong and hold their value compared to today's style of music.
Have it.
feels like an early 90's Alt time capsule, classic
Holds up really well, another firm favourite of mine 🔥
Can never go wrong with this album... great instrumentals, and brings me back to some fun, transformative years....
Meh
Music that hugely influenced my musical taste, part x of n. When we get to 1993 and I'm soaking up all the music around me. My taste was quite eclectic and I listened to Rock, Dance, Rap, Electronic, it didn't matter. Grunge was big, but I never really got into Nirvana back then. The album that made me dive deep into the guitar sound of the early 90's was from the one band NOT from Seattle: Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dreams. This album, and especially the fantastic multi-layered bombastic track "Geek USA" drew me in. It was teenage angst, emotionally draining, music that ebbed and flowed and every note was amazing. Why this album, besides being one of the defining albums of the decade, was so influential to me, was because it made me listen more to the grunge of the era. Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden (who would release their best album a year later) and a whole, whole lot more. An album worth revisiting time and time again. A Masterpiece.
Timeless. One of the most influential albums ever. If you didn't love this album, go back and start the track Mayonnaise; close your eyes and FEEL that fucking song. It's a Masterpiece. 5/5
This album was legit great. I had heard most of the songs before and some a lot more than others, but this was the first listen as a whole album. The album is rich and complex from start to finish. Soothing and heavy at the same time. I want to listen to this again.
One of my favorites.
Every song is interesting in its own way, read that each track has lots and lots of different layers overdubbed. Great/catchy singles as well.
Love it
So, despite being a big fan of Mellon Collie era pumpkins, I’d never properly listened to this before. Which is a case of more fool me as this was absolutely brilliant. Corgan’s voice is never going to be the most accessible instrument but there’s something about the crunching guitars on this that off sets his sneer perfectly. About as great as early 90’s guitar rock gets and I find myself struggling to think of a reason not to award the full 5
5/5. Have heard a few songs on the album before but the deep tracks were great! Love Silverfuck, Geek USA, and Quiet! 90% or more of the songs were great so this record gets a 5 star rating from me!
amazing album 💥
Great album from these alternative rock icons...love the fuzz pedal sound on this album!
Best album!
10/10
Smash Pumpkins fused the high distortion of grunge with the fuzziness and business of shoegaze, and the grand arena sound of hard rock and glam metal. It often alternates between loud psychotic chaos and calm dreamy cheeriness. With 13 tracks (one being a short interlude), each track comes at 5 minutes average length! And yet there were no points where I felt I was getting bored. Personally, I find the complex song structures to reflect classical music with how it seems to be divided into parts that gradually and smoothly transition to each other yet sound nothing like. "Hummer" was the first example of this that stuck out to me. It's a very consistent record, with the transitions between songs being such as smoothly as the parts within them. Track listing is well chosen, with the powerful tracks (including 2 hits) at the front to pull in audiences and show their diversity and talents. Like Mellon Collie, we have this really long drawn out conclusion. Following the grand fuzziness of "Mayonnaise", we have the most melodious, emotional track "Spaceboy" that leads into the bombastic epic of "Silverfuck", before finally fizzling with two more tracks. I found myself enjoying every song. It's not as strong as Mellon Collie. I feel bad because I gave Mellon Collie 4 stars 18 months ago when the sound was very fresh to me. But as it grew on me, I realized Mellon Collie was a whole cinematic experience and most tracks left a huge impression on me. Maybe this'll do the same, cause I'm already loving it all. If I could go back in time, I would give Mellon Collie its 5 stars. And as such, I don't feel guilty in giving this less favorable (but still incredible record) the 5 stars.
Flawless album
Siamese CREAM
Really impressed by this one! I was only really familiar with '1979' so I was expecting more of the laid back alternative vibes, but I really enjoyed the grunge. 'Cherub Rock' was my fave but I also loved 'Disarm' and 'Geek U.S.A'.
While all the Alt-Rock fanboys gushed over Gish, Siamese Dream was the album that made Smashing Pumpkins superstars. Cherub Rock alone is still played on alternative stations and even Classic Rock stations. Today still shows up on playlists more than 30 years later. Overall, it's a blast of noise on top of singable tunes and loud punk-metal. A true classic fo the era.
Another album that was very formative to my listening in my teen years.
Perfect album! Great representation of ‘90s alt-rock. There’s a reason the Smashing Pumpkins are still so revered. The music is epic and the lyrics/vocals are haunting.
Incredible album. Loved it as a kid and love it even more now. So much of the early 90s alternative rock has the same compressed sound which makes it sound very 90s. The Smashing Pumpkins made denser, fuller-sounding music, and I never realized how different they were from their peers until I started listening to them again in the past few years. They don’t sound like a dated 90s band- this album holds up really well. And “Mayonaise” is my favorite Pumpkins song.
Now this is music! I enjoyed this album and will have to check out more smashing pumpkins
So many great songs on this album. Thoroughly enjoy this album all the way through time and time again. Definitely a classic.
Reviewing Mellon Collie right before Siamese Dream made me realize how badly I wish I could add half stars. Mellon Collie could've been a 3.5, I still really enjoy it. But Siamese Dream stands at a level of its own and is the definitive Smashing Pumpkins album. Everything I didn't like as much about the album that followed this one (too long, at times overindulgent, and great songs that just didn't flow well together), they had already perfected with this one. Cherub Rock is an amazing opening song- the drum roll at the start nails it, as if to say, "Ladies and gentlemen- the main attraction". And then breaks into a classic Smashing Pumpkins model- reverby hook, a few pounding drums, and the following barrage of distortion. "Today" requires no comment. Same winning formula. To me, a 5-star album from any genre or artist are the ones with enough hits to accelerate it to 4 stars, but tracks in between that drive it on cruise control to that 5th star. I haven't listened to Siamese Dream all in one sitting in a while, so there was a point after belting out the chorus in Disarm when I was halfway through Soma, wondering if the songs would be lighter and not punch as hard because that song starts softly. Was it just 4 stars because of Today, Disarm, and Cherub Rock? At that same moment- the guitars screeched into the heavy final minute of that song, directly into the MEGA drumming on Geek. Ultimately landing right into Mayonaise, my favorite track on the album. From the ethereal picking to the howling guitar effect I don't think I've heard in any other song outside of this. The 4-song stretch hit my criteria. I don't know how artists make perfect songs, but here as with all the greats- The Smashing Pumpkins take songs that may not independently be Top of the Pops, and mold them to match the theme and drive the direction of the album. Best moment- the quarter second pauses in Mayonaise in between the howling guitars that feel sonically like the equivalent of the moment in a roller coaster when you just start falling.
Every issue I had in melloncollie is nonexistent in this album. This album is a lot more consistent, as they found their style and stuck with it all the way through, and it really works. I don’t think there’s any song I dislike on this one. I was getting ready to say the first 3 tracks were so strong, then I saw the rest of the list, and realized it’s just the whole album that’s strong. Favorite songs: cherub rock, mayonnaise, rocket Can we get some MBV next?
cherub rock is such a good song. Billy Corgan has possibly my favorite guitar tone of all time. I love all the singles I've heard off this one, really rooting for it to be a 5. The lyrics on here are so 90s. vague, edgy, dark, and kinda gross.
Apparently Billy Corgan is problematic for some reason but don’t fucking tell me why cuz I don’t need this shut ruined for me. This one doesn’t have as clear of a highlight for me as Mellon Collie did with 1979 but every single song is great and I could listen to this one just about anytime. I honestly don’t know why I don’t listen to the Smashing Pumpkins more cuz the songwriting and guitar playing is as good as any 90s group. This album does a great job of having a good mix of sounds and moods from the really heavy parts to the lighter ones like Disarm and Soma. Even the songs themselves can have wild dynamic shifts like in Soma and t but everything still comes off as cohesive and sounding like a group that is totally in their bag. Also I agree with pat, the little half beat pauses with the feedback on mayonnaise go hard. 👍:mayonnaise, cherub rock, soma
The guitar in this album absolutely rips. Such a fire sound that you can’t really find anywhere else. Consistently good and, while I know this album came before, they really honed in on the sound from my favorite tracks on Mellon collie. Fuzzy guitars and softer vocals make even the heavier rock tracks seem calmer than they are. This album>>> Mellon collies for me. All the good with less bad. Best: mayonnaise, hummer, disarm, today MMM: THE KILLER IN ME IS THE KILLER IN YOUU I SEND MY SMILE OVER TO YOUUUU
An essential grunge album and the most important album of my freshman year of college. The skein of rich and unique sound on this! That wall of guitar sound so easily identifies the band.
Cherub Rock is a killer. Today is a landmark of a song. Hummer is actually kind of cool. Diasarm fucking kills it. The set-up into Silverfuck and then the execution was one of my favorites on the album. Luna kinda sucks and is a weak closer, but still this is a 5 for me.
I’ve been on a little of a run with the Pumpkins lately. This is a really great album that doesn’t fit into the grunge mold of the time even if it’s 90s guitar driven rock.
"Cherub Rock" is hard to beat as one of the best opening songs for an album. It could be argued that the order of play for an album, especially with years of hindsight, can inform on how an album's long-term popularity will fare. This album is a fair example of that, but more importantly it leaves an indelible mark that the Smashing Pumpkins should they maintain this particular sound, could form their own niche in the hard rock genre. History will tell us they did just that, as well as evolve into more indie/experimental, along with a dabble into the nu metal scene, but where this album shines is that it serves as the definitive Smashing Pumpkins album to bring their evolution back to earth. While the album contains hits like "Cherub Rock", "Today" and "Disarm" it also has tracks (like any good album should) that are best discovered off the air. "Hummer" is an example of that. All the grittiness of the album is capped with some of the band's more introspective sounds, introducing a particular beauty amidst the heavy distortion that ends in a jam session with melodic bass, accompanying a softer dare say lovely electric solo, that leads into "Rocket" picking up the distortion but not forgetting the solemnity of its previous track in spite of its higher energy, leading right into the angsty impact of "Disarm". Saving the reader from a track by track tour, what this album does well is, and what any album should do well, is offer a complete experience devoid of throwaway tracks. Listeners can in some cases, but mostly subconsciously detect where a band is sort of phoning it in, which is why a lot of a band's earlier work gets touted so highly when the love for the music has remained novel. If this album had any cons, it comes at the expense of being 99% an innocuous listen that parents or children can remain ignorant of in spite of some heavy feelings expressed lyrically. In the digital age, the visibility of what is being listened to is much more than "Track 11" on a dashboard or mobile device, and so while an album is a personal listening experience the honest truth is that moments for that are increasingly rare. Why does that matter? In truth it does not for listening on one's own, however part of what makes this album so great is that what would have been a perfect journey gets a slightly interrupting turn of subject matter that seems a bit out of place. While such deviation can snap a listener out of a rut, this review just does not find a way to justify that here. Does it make the album regrettable? Absolutely not as there are more heavy subject matter that could make this discussion, so that should not be the takeaway here.

Best.
This album was pretty awesome. In a vacuum Billy Corgan's voice doesn't blow me away, but it absolutely kills it in the greater context of their music. Loved the variety of this album as well as the production value, especially in the little melodic breakdowns towards the end of some songs.
Honestly sounded so good: I'm not completely sure why I left this album so long but I enjoyed the typical rocky guitar feel of this album. I would definitely listen to this whole album more and I hope that I see more Smashing Pumpkins on this list.
Woooow!
This is a great album. Drums really kick ass. Several radio hits and the entire album is well-recorded. A very enjoyable listen on a good system. 4.7/5
GOOOOOOOOD 9/10
great
If only for "Today" (instantly catchy), "Cherub Rock" (loud, heavy and menacing) and "Disarm" (one of the most heartfelt ballads ever penned this side of the nineties), *Siamese Dreams* deserves to be on this list. And the rest is great as well. Tortured and tender and terrific. Teenage angst at its finest, very different from Nirvana's version of it, but effective in its own right. The only issue with this LP is that Billy Corgan and co. could have used a little self-editing to reduce its length and make it even more striking. That sort of issue will have larger consequences on their next full-length release *Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness*, a double-CD/triple-LP extravaganza that will stretch the boundaries of what you can expect from double-albums, for better or for worse. Here, this is merely the case of a couple of songs being a little too long. Such admittedly minor flaws have an obvious point of origin. Billy Corgan is a great musician, and he was a talented songwriter during the nineties, but his Achilles' Heel is his overinflated ego, and this always has had consequences on the way his albums are constructed/designed/conceptualized (the last--and frankly ridiculous--example of this is that triple release he is currently going through...). Fortunately, the side-effects of Corgan's ego were not this *dire* on *Siamese Dreams*. Mostly because his songs were great at the time, no matter how long they were... Corgan also has a very distinctive, peculiar voice. I'm pretty fine with it, by the way, and if I understand how said voice can be grating for some ears, I still think it is one of the key ingredients that helped put the Smashing Pumpkins in the nineties 'alternative' map. So it's a good thing. As self-indulgent as the two albums I've quoted in this review are, The Smashing Pumpkins actually deserved to be noticed, thanks to the timeless rockers and ballads on those records. So it's no wonder both LPs appear on this list (and mine). Because they are inseperable "siamese" albums themselves, are they not? How unwittingly "meta" is that, huh? My grade for *Siamese Dreams*: 4.5/5, rounded up. Number of albums left to review: 590 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 196 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 92 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 122
One of my favourite albums from when I was a teenager, but one I hadn't listened to in a long time. It still holds up, pretty flawless album! One of the best albums of the grunge era and the 90s in general, in my opinion. It's a shame that Billy Corgan went off the rails and the band kind of self destructed after the first three albums. I would have preferred that he just start an average solo career rather than continuing on with the SP name.
One of the best examples of 90's alternative rock
Fantastic album. Super gritty, grungy, experimental. Smashing Pumpkins helped shape the sound of Alt Rock through their early releases, and this is one of the 2 iconic albums that really stands the test of time. I love the buildup to a fast-paced jam in select tracks on here, and they found a way to flow so nicely into the more subdued songs on the album. Fave tracks: Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm, Rocket, Mayonaise, Silverfuck
This is a perfect example of a grunge album. The balance struck here between the thick, crunchy guitar heavy tracks and the lighter, moody ones with full string accompaniment really hits the mark. Billy Corgan is not a great singer by any stretch of the imagination, but his vocal delivery on this album really evokes a sense of longing and nostalgia, making the emotional resonance that much stronger. The one thing I could find issue with here is that it could have been a track or two shorter, as the length does drag on a bit, but none of the songs really feel like filler, so it's only a minor complaint. I'll give this a strong 4.5, rounding up. Fav Tracks: Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm, Geek USA
Absolutely gorgeous album. Reminds me of my childhood.
Une fois de plus d’excellentes chansons, un son reconnaissable malgré de multiples influences, belle réussite
As close to a perfect album as you can get. Every song from start to finish is incredible. I can’t imagine the ego it must give to know you created such a masterpiece
I love the smashing pumpkins thanks to my mum.
As sweet as that cotton candy that my siblings and I ate in that carnival back then. As creamy as the pasta that we ate that weird but fun night where me and my family went the a park a long time ago. As enjoyable as the games and roleplays that my playmates and I used to create when we play in the streets. And as sad and longing as the nostalgia that incorporates all of these.
Goed album!
Even though this was only the Smashing Pumpkins' second album, it immediately rings as the band in their prime and at their best. Billy Corgan's signature, unmistakable vocals are on point here; they are full of grunge and that iconic agony that only he could bring to a song. Each song sounds so uniquely and cohesively like the Smashing Pumpkins, yet each one stands out as individual hard-hitters. The instrumentation here does such a good job of elevating that grunge sound. You have certain points where the music sounds pained and tortured, and those points are also balanced with some very beautiful background string orchestration. The Smashing Pumpkins' use of that symphonic sound in grunge music is such a dichotomy, but it really just works. All around, the production here is just top notch. The album seems to end on a more obviously morose and sad note, but the lyrics, vocals, and instrumentations are not compromised here; it works quite well as a way to bring things to a close. This band is one of the most iconic grunge/alternative rock acts of the 90s, and so many of their songs are timeless examples of those genres. In fact, this album itself contains a few of those. Even among the lesser known songs on the album, there really isn't a skip to be found here. This album demonstrates why the Smashing Pumpkins are kings among the grunge and alt rock genres. There is no question in my mind as to whether or not this album should be on here. Aside from that, I just really loved every minute of this album.
A great album, probably their best. Not a bad song on it.
I don't have a ton to say about this album, except that it's pretty brilliant. It's really a quintessential mood piece for its era, gorgeously arranged with some powerful songwriting. It's lyrically dark and painful and eloquent. But musically the band also strikes a wonderful balance between being blisteringly hard and elegantly lovely. I haven't really listened to SP for quite a while, but this album is a strong case for going back and listening to them all over again. One of the great albums of the 90s. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Today, Disarm, Cherub Rock, Spaceboy, Mayonaise, Rocket, Silverfuck, Spaceboy, Geek U.S.A., Luna, Sweet Sweet, Soma, Hummer
I'm stood up in my office giving this album a standing ovation. Wonderful album. Favorite track: Cherub Rock
Acho que até os trabalhos "ruins" do Smashing Pumpkins merecem 5 estrelas. Não é o caso desse, que mereceria umas 7 :-)
Absolute bangers, back to front. Some of my favorite guitar work ever. Life changing stuff. I love this album so much. Standouts: Cherub Rock, Today, Hummer, Soma, Geek U.S.A., Mayonaise, Silverfuck
I love the song Disarm, so on that basis alone I could probably justify giving this album an 5. But there is a lot of other great music on this even though I’d only ever listened to the hits before. Why I never delved into their deeper cuts I can’t explain, but I’m glad to have heard this now. Such a great example of 90s alternative.
Vrhunski album banda koji je bio na vrhuncu devedesetih.
Everyone knows the three biggest "hits" from each of the big 3 alternative rock albums from around this time (Nirvana's Nevermind, Pearl Jam's Ten and Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins). But I believe what makes each of these albums standout and have staying power are the deep cuts, some of which have renewed interest over the years. I'm looking at Nevermind's "Something In The Way" and of course Ten's "Black", which wanted to be a hit but Pearl Jam refused to release it as a single. And I'll make the argument that three deep cuts from Siamese Dream are in fact better than the three "hits" released from the album. Maybe "Soma", "Mayonaise", and "Spaceboy" don't have the anthemic feel you get from "Today" or "Cherub Rock". But I tend to revisit them more than any of the more popular tracks on Siamese Dream. The Pumpkins don't get the accolades Nirvana and Pearl Jam still receive, and obviously a lot of that comes from Billy Corgan rubbing people the wrong way with his surly personality. Those people include members of the Smashing Pumpkins. But who gives a shit. We should be less concerned about how the sausage is made. Stay out of the kitchen and just enjoy results.
Really good. Enjoyed this a lot
Simpelweg geniaal. Makkelijkste 5 sterren die ik hier weggeef
If aliens landed from the planet Qualtrar and asked to experience Earth music from the 1990s, this is the album I would choose to show them. I would give this six stars if I could.
Hazy high school memories. Joyous fun
A perfect sophomore effort following up those excellent debut. TSP is part of why the 1990’s had such an excellent alternative scene. Here we get dreamy guitars and fuzzy feedback laden riffs coupled with jazz bass and drums straight from a mushroom dream. Excellent!
Homer Simpson, smiling politely! Seriously though Billy Corgan is naff but this album sounds like what Nirvana could have been if they learned to play their instruments. Also the bells and strings are super sick.
Classic 90s album.
Flawless.
One of those bands I always liked what I heard, but never owned any of their stuff. There was a time, you know, when you had to pay 15.99 for a CD! And this is peak grunge - all the rock, a wall of sound, themes a bit deeper than gettin' drunk and gettin' laid.
In a dream we are connected. If reincarnation was possible and time was all wobbly, I'd live my life in such a way that I could come back as the guitar sound on this album. Seeing Billy, wearing a Superman t-shirt, asking for hands in the air at an early 90s Big Day Out and seeing a magnificent wave of love is one of the highlights of my music life. That Corgan Big Muff overdriven rhythm, that Iha twiddling, does it get any beefier or any better? I'm not sure that is actually possible. I come back to this album often, sometimes after many moons, and it always gets better. This is 5 stars at its finest. Even without mentioning any songs actually on this brilliant record.
Classic Album.
Classic
Slaps
This is one of my favourite albums of all time. The guitar tone on this especially Mayonaise is just pure heaven. Love it. I don’t think there’s any bad track on it. Pure 90s perfection. 5/5
Stile tipico del gruppo, senza essere troppo esasperato. Molto bella 'Hummer', un po' tutto l'album, non me lo aspettavo!
Best album from The Smashing Pumpkins
Just a glorious album; one of the first I ever owned although I didn't truly appreciate it until I was older. I was recently listening to Hum and a friend chastised me for not thinking they were shoegaze given their wall of sound motif. He then reminded me that the Pumpkins were also an offshoot of that shoe gaze wall of sound, and it's very noticeable re-listening to this album. Grunge meets shoegaze, but amazing. I love how they moved away from pure distortion into more melodic pulsing (not just fuzzy) guitar sounds. The opening 6 song sequence is awesome; their 4 singles show that energetic, up-tempo and melodic wall of alternative rock sound (Cherub Rock and Rocket) as well as depth in muscianship and lyrics (Today and Disarm). Quiet and Hummer are right up there with those 4. Things start to detour when you hit Soma, though it and others (Spaceboy, Luna, Silverfuck) continue to show their depth of sound and lyrical emotion and/or some prog rock complexity and skill. Still, Geek USA and Mayonaise (Silverfuck too) provide more pulsing and energetic rock if you want more of that (and why wouldn't you? It rocks). Again, just a glorious, classic album.
For some reason, I was thinking the double album with the album with more "hits" but I knew I liked this. It's kind of crazy to hear how fresh this still sounds 30 years later compared to how tired everything they've made in the past 20 years sounds...
Teenage favorite that still holds up
already know it so well
Smashing album by a smashing band.
Great album, Disarm is one of my favorite songs
Soma takes you on such a journey. Billy's voice always sounds creepy when he songs slowly, which is why that little break in the middle of Geek U.S.A. is so brilliant. The rest of the song is such a great thrash. Mayonnaise is surely the song that Courtney played before forming Hole. Silverfuck is just a monster. I'm going searching for live videos now.
One of my favorite bands of all time. An easy 5 star album.
This album it's a combination of alt rock, some grunge, acoustic and acoustic rock. It starts with a lot of energy like an alt rock album should be, then some punk starts to play and as the album goes on, the music is like a roller coaster, a lot of relaxing acoustic comes and then a hit of alt rock abusing in a good sense of the electric instruments.
Perfect
Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm, Soma, Mayonaise, Silverfuck, Luna. Yes I just basically named the whole album, it's that good.
I love this album. Brings me back to my younger adulthood.
Damn, after 20 years there still isn't really anything that sounds like Smashing Pumpkins. Great album front to back and one I need to add to my vinyl collection.
Holds up.
Quintessential Smashing Pumpkins, Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm and Rocket remain some of Pumpkins' best songs both musically and lyrically
Fruit Bats Eric D Johnson covered this in its entirety. One of the great albums of all time I think. Didn't really like anything they did after this.
The best thing the Pumpkins ever did and one of the best coming-of-age/teenage angst-fueled albums. After the soft opening chords of 'Cherub Rock' the next 60+ minutes are just a glorious smash in the face, full of sonic dynamics and depth.
Brilliant album
I already listen to these guys a fair bit, but still made some discoveries here. This is essential listening for rock fans, just a steady and consistent rock record that doesn't feel like it's nearly 30 years old. Also a great album to listen to on a late-night drive out of town with your best friends who, thankfully have the same taste in music as you do. Standard tracks are Cherub Rock, Hummer, Mayonaise, and Spaceboy.
Van heel kalme nummers tot nummers die naar metal neigen, met allen duidelijk de handtekening van SP. Zalig album
great album
Peak 90s
Best intro to an album ever? From that point, only gets better ...
One of the soundtracks to my school years and must be one of my most-listened to albums ever. And it still sounds phenomenal. Not a single weak track. Highlights: Soma, Mayonaise, Geek USA, and every single thing that Jimmy Chamberlin does.
Amazing, duh
Love it!
Kwaliteit
Great revisit of some 90s grungy rock, and a nice trip down memory lane.
love this one
Smashing!
I really REALLY liked this album. Wish I would’ve discovered this earlier in life. Can’t describe it, but it’s so good!
Another one of those bands I'd heard of but never really listened to. This is great, grungy and shoegazey but still a bit upbeat. A solid 4.5, rounding up
Such a great album. Contains some of my favorite pumpkins songs. Corgan is a wizard. 5/5
I mean... Its definitely a top 100 album of all time. Idk what to say. I'm dreamed out of my siamese mind rn. 9.9/10
Happy this is the first album I was familiar with brought me back to six flags if you're reading this a long time from now I hope you remember tonight tonight
J’avais lu que siamese dream etait le meilleur des pumpkins et cela se confirme des les premieres chansons. C,est un super album rock qui me fait comprendre le buzz auour de ce band sans les annees 90. 5
They were far away from the excellence of "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," but I'll rate it with five stars just because it's still a collection of memorable songs, and I made a mistake of giving just four stars to "Mellon Collie" when I received it on this list.
Still overwrought and deeply resonant.
All killer, no filler 😁
Superb. Didn't realise how many of the Smashing Pumpkins tracks I knew are from this album
This is the first of what will (hopefully) be great listenings; as this is coming from the guy who thought that 90s alternative was full of butt-rock, cheesy pop-punk, pretentiousness, and Nirvana. Fortunately, this, AIC, Primus, and RATM to an extent have shown me the light. I really enjoyed this album, which was higher than expected. I think that all tracks were strong, although I preferred the heavier tracks as a metalhead. I have noticed a common topic of Corgan (Frontman) singing about depression and dealing with it. Such lyrics include: \"I shall be free from the voices in my head\", and \"I'll betray myself\". Overall, I was really impressed by how all of this was pulled of despite increased conflict within the band, as each track had something unique about it. 9.5/10
Flawless
A 90’s alt rock masterpiece, get the vocals are not everyone’s taste. But personally I’m a fan and believe this is smashing pumpkins best album.
What an amazing record. I wish I had this on vinyl but I’m not that rich lol
Canciones buenas tiene casi todas: "Cherub Rock", "Quiet", "Today", "Rocket", "Disarm", "Soma", "Geek U.S.A.", "Mayonaise", "Spaceboy", "Silverfuck", "Sweet Sweet" y "Luna". Espectacular disco.
Their best album!
The one album that's in my personal library, and a pretty great album too. Cherub Rock kicks things of nicely, Today is so lovely, Disarm is well, disarming, and Mayonaise has always been a favourite.
Approached with some trepidation given my ambivalence for Melon Collie… I was surprisingly bowled over by Siamese Dreams. Tight, controlled, impactful and bold, this is as perfect an alt rock 90s album as you could wish for. Corgan brings his A game, the production is excellent and the album is an emotional experience without seeming histrionic and all the more powerful for that. 4.5 stars? But I’m in a generous mood so 5 it is.
are the pumpkins smashing as in the verb “to smash” or smashing as in the british adjective
Perfect, their best album
It's a classic!
Lovely stuff
Woh! Smashing Pumkins are legendary. Billy Corgan is an absolute MONSTER singer. You can pick his voice out from anywhere. Not the best album they have but still has some huge songs on this album and they never forget their true rock feel with heavy guitar and drums.
Just played the 'weaker' second half of the album and it's fantastic, every track a potential hit. Nirvana have the cool, the zeitgeist, the amazing live events, and the aura of tragic glamour - and the songs that defined a generation. But they never made an album as strong as this.
I was instantly transported back to the 90s when the intro to Cherub Rock kicked in. This is a classic and still sounds amazing.
Chuckie is back
Drumming is next level. Screams 90's, but screams it so well. That baroque style terraced dynamics marks this as an early-ish grunge winner. Disarm is such a great tune and Today with that cool riff makes this album a classic.
The guitar sounds on this record are incredible. The way Corgan uses fuzz is so well done and adds so much to their sound that it makes everything he did sound thinner by comparison. Beyond that, the songwriting is perfect. 10/10
Ok, I'll squeeze this up to five. This is probably a nostalgia thing because I discovered them after this record, but for as much as I am a fan of the Pumpkins, especially Mellon Collie, followed behind by Adore, this album never latched on with me. It should have though. Every time I listen, I like it more, and wonder why I don't play it more frequently. There is some truly great rock here. Amazing guitars, dynamics, songwriting. Many things that stand out in later Pumpkins songs feel like they really started here.
Awesome rock album
I love this album. So many good songs & sounds. Smashing Pumpkins sound like no one else. Rocket has always been my favorite pumpkins song, beginning of Hummer is amazing.
My favorite Pumpkins albums. This thing is truly legendary.
F it, love me some pumpkins
The best album of the 1990s.
5 This album brings me a tone of dream to memories that became raw by the way sometimes our actions decay in something less ideal and more true, but it still invites me to try and rediscover the dream, the emotions, the simple actions, what lasts and that's always a glimpse of what it is. The album reminds me people I like, and how "Soma" felt lovely and surprised me when I first listened to the song on the radio long years ago, driving home in a silent tired sleepy peaceful night.
A masterpiece. Beautiful, heartfelt music.
The first album I ever bought myself was not this one, but it was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. This is a great flashback.
веш машина звуцци врррррр
A classic, great melodies, 4.5 /5
This is just a great album through and through. The big hits (Today, Disarm) are great and the non-singles are just as good if not better. Mayonnaise is just amazing, but even better if you're in a brooding state of mind. Some of the songs might not quite be 5 star level, but the ones that are more than make up for it.
Amazing start to finish.
I had not heard the whole thing before, but I recognize a lot of the songs. I enjoyed it
This album is a solid grunge album I want to listen to it again
Just the kind of 90's I like to run into
Great album, flows really well, numerous great songs, "Today" probably my favourite. I would definitely add to my physical music collection.
Classic
Yup. It’s a great rock album.
This is an absolute monster of an album. “Today” is such a beautiful, tragic song. Peak Corgan sad boi brilliance. The whole thing is a solid listen all the way through, love it!
Great album.
Ein af mínum uppáhalds
Absolute classic 90s alt album. Lyrically deep and musically dense. I love how layered it is. You can really hear the MBV influence.
Awesome album I have listened to it before but would listen to it over and over. This is my kind of music so it was a good start to this journey!
5+, great sound, great memories, great album. Still play it from time to time
I always choose for Gish and had not listened to this album fo many years. Never expected at the time that the Pumpkins would become so big. I thought they would reach a status like The Pixies or Sonic Youth but they went stadium-style starting with this album, without making any concessions to their music. OK, the production is more radio-friendly than Gish. But that's a big plus: this is one of the best-produced albums ever, the guitars on this album sounded great and they still do! And the songs are great too - unlike the OK Computer album from a few days ago, there is no single weak song on it. The lyrics are mwah but at least they are not annoying like on The Downward Spiral, so fine.
That feeling of nineties nostalgia. Brilliant album from start to finish.
Good music from billy
Great album - I knew the big hits, the ones with music videos, but the stuff deeper into the album is great as well. Geek USA got my 10 year old headbanging.
Big fan! Especially love Cherub Rock
The alt rock album of the 90s. The musicianship on this album is incredible. I’m particularly a big fan of the lead guitar lines and Jimmy Chamberlin’s drumming. Furthermore, Billy Corgan has a gift for melody that cuts through the albums heaviest moments
Guitars are so sexy. But Billy is a little annoying.
Disarm is the song that made me discover Smashing Pumpkins. Love the fuzzy guitars
Great
A lot of TSP's songs sound very similar, so I typically don't realize just how many of them I really enjoy.
Gish was about to takeoff and was eclipsed by Nevermind and then Siamese Dream was released. The Pumpkins really took off with Infinite Sadness which was their most polished and seemed to give everything to everyone. The relevance of the Pumpkins lies in Gish and Siamese Dream, even Pisces Iscariot to an extent (Landslide cover rivals the original). Soft and suspenseful song opens turn to raucous distortion and loose chaos. Similar to Infinite Sadness, there is range and it's not all gnarled mayhem and anarchy on SD. While Billy Corgan seems like a monster, Sweet Sweet is beautiful; the intro to Mayonaise; beautiful, Soma; lovely even Rocket's song open calms with a wonderful distorted repeater riff. Musically, every song is evocative despite the lyrics. From the first track... the slow peppy build to furious excitement is incredible. However, if there's one thing that I dislike about this album it's the song Disarm. What a blugh downer song. It sounds like Eeyore wrote it. And then there's the lyric... I always thought the lyric was "cut that little child, SODOMY is such a part of you" uhhhh BUZZKILL - you can't put that word and 'child' in a song!! WTF? (... though today the lyrics read "...cut that little child, INSIDE OF ME and such a part of you"). I dunno, Billy Corgan has always seemed to be a tortured artist with a bullhorn that's never big enough. Regardless, I've got a lot of great memories tied to this album. It was on repeat for months when I moved out and was living downtown Richmond. I may have evolved some (not much) but to me, this album will always be relevant.
While, as others have pointed out, this album is less polished than melancholy, I find that to be a point in its favor. I like that’s it’s a little more raw, a little more rough around the edges. I love this album. I find Disarm to be hauntingly beautiful. All in all, this album is so quintessentially 90s and yet has so many levels it keeps me coming back.
Such a great album. Cherub rock is an incredible opener that sets the rest up perfectly
Bangin album
Today - First riff I ever played on guitar. The fuzzy harmonies of Cherub Rock's guitar.
Siamese Dream is a quintessential 90s album that stands the test of time.
JFC, I just listened to Smashing Pumpkins yesterday! This album is about 100 times better than that one. Somehow Corgan's voice works way better with these songs. They are harder hitting and are genuinely inspired. Especially, Cherub Rock which I love. But seriously, what kind of idiot thinks TWO smashing pumpkins alums need to be on a list of 1001 albums. They should have only included this one.
ES BUENÍSIMO se volvió uno de mis álbumes favoritos es un placer de escuchar
A wonderful album.
For me this album is their absolute high point - barely a step wrong in the entire album - brilliant stuff
Such a great album
Classic album. The Pumpkins arrive as grunge/alt-rock lords. Sludgy guitars, huge riffs, feline vocals and gigantic drums. Great stuff. Best Tracks: Cherub Rock, Geek U.S.A., Mayonaise
BAM!
Prachtig! Van A tot Z goed. Hier en daar een tikje pathetisch, maar ach, dat was ik in de tijd ook.
I'm excited for this one! I like what I know from Smashing Pumpkins and looking forward to hearing more. Cherub Rock is a great way to start an album. Loved this from start to finish.
mega top el album spaceboy y luna alv que rolones
Great album, love Smashing pumpkins
Dearie me, mass regret on not listening to this whole album before now. What a cracker- perfect mix of all instruments and vocal
Smash the Pumpkins, eh?
A beautiful masterpiece of alt-rock for the ages.
Holdt seg bedre enn fryktet
makes me want ice-creams :3
A classic!
I already knew this album. Its great. Cherub rock, Today are classics. Some new ones I never listened to: Rocket, Disarm, Soma, Geek U.S.A.
Reminds me of being 16(ish) - really great album
Absolutely brilliant.
Amazing album with so much great songs. Every song is about something that goes on in his mind , about struggles with his past and how because of these struggles he is still affected until today. this and some amazing work on the guitar makes this a classic 9.3/10
Already listened loads. Classic
I loved this band back in the day, and for some reason fell out with them until I went back a few years ago. I know a lot of people don't like Corgan, and there's good reason for that, but this album rocks. Best track: Today
12/28 Phenomenal album. This is the hard rock I'm looking for, smashing instrumentals across heavy lyrics, the artwork ties the knot. Standout Tracks: Cherub Rock, Hummer, Soma, Geek U.S.A., Silverfuck
4,5/5
false
Even though I hate billy Corgan's voice with passion, I can't give this album less than 4 stars. I really love the melody and the lyrics.
This actually holds up better than I thought it would. I'd probably go 4.5 if I could, but am rounding down.
This, to me, is the turning point from college rock into the 90's and its a welcome step up. Billy Corgan is obviously a terrible human, bur damn he is talented. The songs are big sweeping statements of intent and maybe this introduced me to the value of strings in rock. Disarm may be a top 10 song and the rest of the album still holds up very well. iys no Melon Collie but its still great.
The platonic ideal of a Pumpkins album. Careful cherubic harmonies veer wildly into grunge distortion, before moving again to a post-psych-rock guitar licks. The closest they got to perfection before Billy Corgan's ego took hold and things began to get a little heady. On a songwriting basis they would hit higher highs later on, but on an album level they would never produce anything as direct or consistent ever again.
I am a teen again. Nice, broadly.
Like em
Not the best album from The Smashing Pumpkins, but it’s still very good.
YAYYY THE SMASHING PUMPKINS, halt sehr cool und iconic, finde das ist deren bestes album
Awesome
Solid album
Another 4 for Smashing Pumpkins, great record, not quite blowing me away but easy to get lost in with lots of grungy angst and dark beauty
One of the classics of the 90s. What's interesting to me on a personal level is that while this is less grunge and borrows more from shoegaze and the like (which is right up my alley), I never went gaga over this album. It is great, but it's a 4, not a 5 for me.
4.5
Good music dragged down by the annoying voice of the singer
Not dissimilar to Mellon Collie in that, it's all largely "solid-to-good" and then there's a single track that absolute flies ("Disarm" here, "Tonight, Tonight" there). When they're at their peak, they're very VERY good indeed.
Iconic. Pity Corgan is a wanker.
I expected this to be a female artist based on the cover - nonetheless i’m enjoying it!
Greaaat 4/5
Grunge is such a good genre!
Huge guitar tones, hugely influential in its day, still not exactly my cup of tea. Still I like it more than a lot of the three stars I’ve given out.
Probably my favorite grunge era album, Billy Corgan is one of the few whinier vocalists I actually like. This album has more Crunch than the Cap'n and I'm here for it
Très bon album. Une sonorité riche et des thème abordé touchant. Très maîtriser. 8/10
First Songs I thought it would be an okay album but the long the album went the more I enjoyed it
Better than I expected, to be honest.
Punk/alt rock. Liked the guitar tones.
Fav song: Tonight
Cherub Rock is such an awesome opener.
listening to this on a rainy night changed my life
This album was literally fire fr fr
Iconic ‘90s album - Billy Corgan’s emotional vocals on topics of trauma and abuse
immaculate vibe for college reunion; have never listened to an album before and a real pleasant surprise
One of those bands that you're supposed to know but I can't say I'd ever actually listen to them that much. Enjoyed making their acquaintance and I certainly understand why it's received the status that it has, emblematic of the period
good stuff
Great album.
i just about like it as a whole, a lot of it blends together but it's really got some gems stuffed in there. Cherub Rock is a real trip, Disarm sneaks up on you. favorite might be Luna? soft 4
Quintessential 90s grunge album, really enjoyed it
Good
awesome
Fuzzzzz
I think I found a SP album I really like! It's fuzzy (still a bit whiny but love the big fuzz) (8.1) ★★★★
I haven't liked other Smashing Pumpkind albums, but this is incredible. 4.5 stars
Good album. Real cool classic 90s guitars and not too whiny unlike their double opus after this Mellon Badger And The Infinite Badgers. Highlights - Cherub Rock and Hummer. Still a bit too long though. I would cut one of the Siamese twins in half so the album was three quarters of its current length and rename the album Siamese Badger. The episode of Simpsons where the band feature in the Badgerpalooza festival with Homer still remains their best achievement followed by Cherub Rock appearing the 2007 rhythm game Badger Hero and then this.
Probably their best single album, though I still have a softer spot regarding the expansive Mellon Collie. High 4s
Muito bom!!!!
Today was the first Smashing Pumpkins song i remember hearing and remains one of my favourites. It manages to be both very guitar heavy and melodic at the same time. Disarm brings a more orchestral feel that foreshadows the epic Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness. I like how Soma continues the quiet reflection only for Geek USA to grab you and shake you awake once more.
I was surprised how much I love this—the superb guitar licks with driving bass and percussion, and the lyrics and rhythm solid and very grunge—but then Billy Corgan's nasal whine smashes that beautiful pumpkin. I can imagine this being the soundtrack to the old NBC Letterman show's tossing of objects from the top of a skyscraper, graceful and wonderful until it hits the pavement. That's what Corgan's voice does to the music and prevents this from being a 5 for me. Maybe Larry "Bud" Melman would have been better?
Love this album. Might just have multiple of the greatest riffs of all time (Mayonnaise! also Today, Cherub Rock and more). I love how dense the production is. Feels like being suffocated with textures, but everything sounds so rich and amazing that you don't even mind. The guitar tones are awesome and they really use some of the noisier sounds to their benefit, the way they make some room for the melody whenever each chorus hits. Geek USA is a crazy underrated song from here, I love the sharp drums and the transitions between the loud and quiet sections. I would say the album gets weaker after track 9, but picks up right with the last song Luna. What a closer, makes you feel like you're floating away into space.
loved it
Candy-coated buzzsaws. Hyper-melodic shoegaze ice cream. So overstimulating that you know the vision at the center is maniacal. As a teenager I didn’t realize how absolutely bonkers the guitars sound except that I could feel them in my bones. I remember a friend taking the CD out of his backpack in the tennis team locker room. What was this album with the cover that was decidedly un-macho? This was a rock band? I had a VHS tape I used to record the musical performances from SNL, since I didn’t have MTV, and I watched the performance of ‘Today’ over and over again to learn the guitar parts. Then my band played it in our church’s gym. I learned ‘Cherub Rock’ from an issue of Guitar World magazine; watched the ‘Disarm’ video at my best friends house; this album was everywhere, and deservedly so. Billy Corgan is the kind of guy you can never give notes to, because he’s already thought through every possible thing you could say to him and knows the answer already. For better and worse. The highs are supersonic, earth-shattering orange explosions. But the album does eventually wear you down and the lesser songs drag the runtime about 12 minutes longer than it needs to be.
Always thought I would enjoy the Smashing Pumpkins and indeed I did, albeit maybe just a tad grungy for me 🙂
I can't think what to say for this. Yep, I really enjoyed it. "Smashing."
Nice! Haven't listened to this album from start to finish in ages. I real treat to be able to go back and revisit this. I used to listen to the Pumpkins a lot in my youth. Time to queue up some more!
Feels like reminiscing on the past, but having hope for the future.
1979 is a great song, never got further into Smashing Pumpkins. WOW! Wish I did! Songs perfectly fit a 21 year olds day to day. loving Luna - cherub rock - today
What a great noise. You've got to like his whiny voice to enjoy it...
Loud, varied, unique voice. A great album for its time and it stands up pretty well.
Buenardo me re gusto, solo conocia un tema q era 1975 y este album me gusto es mas movidito
Moeilijk te kiezen tussen 4 en 5 sterren maar imma be very picky welke ik 5 sterren geef Fave: Cherub rock
😃
Это было охуенно!
Same as the last Smashing Pumpkins album I listened to. I always come in jaded but walk away having enjoyed it.
I like The Smashing Pumpkins, but I came later to their work so the first album I was really familiar with was Melancholy… This is great. I could happily listen to this again and again.
Muito interessante, rockzão brabo
3,5
A beautiful blend of grunge with shoegaze. I adore this album. 4.25/5.
Love it!
I love the band. I love the songs. I don’t love the ALBUM. This is a case where the sum of the parts is better than the whole thing. I love water, but that doesn’t mean I wanna drink from a firehose. Peel individual tracks off into digestible pieces and I really dig it. Keep bashing me with em repeatedly and I start to hate it. Overblown distortion and chorus effect, incessant nasal whining… only cool in small chunks. Fantastic fatigue is my summary of this album.
강하고, 말도 안되게 감성적이다. 놀랍다.
It's good. It's a guitar tone that I dream about. Billy Corgan is a dick, but that almost doesn't matter.
That's actually a pretty good album. I listened to it here for the first time, and it probably won't be the last. 4/5
Overall I liked it, definitely brought me back to my brief time with nirvana and foo fighters in college. With most alt rock albums I am picky about song length, and some tracks on here were excess of 6-9 minutes which is. Too long for me unless it does go places a la Won't Get Fooled Again. So if I could skip past the longer ones and stick to the 5 mins and under songs I think I'd enjoy it a lot more... Highlights: Today, Cherub Rock (a hell of an opener!), Spaceboy, Soma. Shoutout to Silverfuck for being just the most 90s song title I've seen in some time
Their second LP. Some really good stuff on this one.
Disarm is a masterpiece. Great angsty and raw record. Could have been ~15-20 minutes shorter and kept me wanting more. Sometimes Corgan's vocals can get grating, but I liked it so much I went back for a second listen.
A true classic alt rock album that managed to blend soft spacey atmosphere with harder sounds in many of the tracks, a very unique album experience Cherub rock, Disarm, mayonaise, Luna, geek USA, take your pick. Fantastic tracks throughout. One or two songs I could go without which is stopping me from giving this a 5
This album is heavier than I expected.. funny that most of the smashing pumpkins you hear played on the radio leans away from the heavier stuff. I feel like their sound is pretty unique to them. Enjoyed listening to this today.
objectively gas.
Pretty great album imo. Subtracting a star because it hit me in the nostalgia and unbottled some old memories that I had kept stuffed deep down.
